FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A driver was injured Feb. 7 after a tree branch from a truck in front of him on Ga. 400 flew through his window.

The 31-year-old man said he was driving behind a dump style truck on the highway when the incident occurred.

Just past the exit for Peachtree Parkway, the man saw a large piece of the tree had flown from the truck and struck the man’s driver side windshield and window, which was open.

Go-kart driver arrested on Burruss Mill Road FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A man was arrested after he was caught riding his go-kart on Burruss Mill Road.

The 50-year-old driver failed to yield while getting on the road in front of a deputy who had to brake quickly to avoid hitting the vehicle.

The driver did not have a driver’s license, but when the deputy ran the man’s information, he found multiple suspensions on the man’s license.

The man was arrested for driving while his license was suspended.

The branch broke into several pieces, some of which struck the man.

The driver said he was able to get the tag information for the truck before pulling over. Deputies saw slight damage to the driver side window, and the man showed them several pieces of broken wood.

The man did not seek medical attention, but said he might later if his shoulder began hurting.

A customer behind the suspects reportedly was able to get the license plate number.

Man suspects burgler accessed online accounts FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A homeowner told authorities he suspects someone broke into his home, then got onto his computer to access his accounts.

The man said his email, PayPal and Coin Base accounts were compromised after his band discovered funds were withdrawn from his account without authorization.

He said the transactions happened after he closed the accounts on Jan. 29.

He said he thinks someone entered his home and used his computer because he saw his accounting software open to a page he does not use. Deputies found no signs of forced entry, and the homeowner found nothing else out of place.

Driver flees restaurant after using counterfeit bill Forklift battery removed while parked at worksite FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A customer attempted to use a counterfeit bill Feb. 10 at Zaxby’s off Keith Bridge Road before speeding away in his car.

An employee said she was working the drive-thru when a couple pulled up to pay. The employee took a $100 bill, but realized it was fraudulent. She confronted the customer who reportedly acted confused.

The couple then drove off quickly, leaving the bill and their food behind. They did manage to leave with one large drink.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A battery was removed from a forklift left overnight along Ga. 369 at the Hall and Forsyth counties bridge on Feb. 12.

The forklift was rented and had been used the day before. A worker said he came to the work site that day and saw the battery well was open and the battery was missing.

The worker said the thieves also attempted to take batteries from a water truck nearby, but were unable to remove it.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A man said he was taken for almost $60,000 recently after he fell for a scam on social media.

The 29-year-old man said he received a message on Instagram claiming he had won $60,000. The victim was told he would receive his money in a package from FedEx. Later, the scammer reported the FedEx truck transporting the money was involved in an accident and the package was damaged.

The scammer said the man needed to

send him money in the form of gift cards to cover restocking fees and damage costs.

The man told authorities that over the past month, he made nearly a dozen deposits from his bank account onto gift cards totaling nearly $60,000. He said each time he sent a gift card, the scammer said he would increase the man’s winnings up to $150,000 for his hassle.

The man said he also gave the scammer his bank account number, his phone number and address. He has yet to receive any of the money.

Deputies told the man to go to his bank to close his account.

Vehicle owner discovers fuel system was tainted FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A woman told authorities she suspects a former roommate put sugar in the gas tank of her vehicle after he moved out of a house off Stoney Point Road.

The 63-year-old vehicle owner said she was driving on Feb. 11 when the check engine light came on. She drove the truck to an auto center where technicians reported there was sugar in her fuel system.

The woman said she thinks a prior roommate possibly damaged her truck.

The 69-year-old roommate denied the accusation and noted that he had not been to her house since he moved out a month before.

Restaurant ransacked in overnight burglary FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The La Marina Mexican Grill off McGinnis Ferry Road was burglarized Feb. 9.

The owner said the restaurant closed at 10:30 p.m. the night before and no one returned until 10 a.m. the next day.

Entry into the building was made through a door from the patio where a hole was smashed in the glass.

Inside, behind the bar a cash drawer containing $604 was taken and change was scattered on the floor. A back office had also been ransacked, but nothing was taken.

There were cameras around the building, but they malfunctioned at the time of the incident.

County delays decision on gas station distance requirements

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Commissioners have hit a setback on whether to require a minimum distance between gas stations and neighborhoods.

Commissioners decided to set the topic aside for now after two motions for public hearings failed at a Feb. 26 meeting.

County staff had proposed a 25-foot buffer applied to all residential zonings, excluding a handful of zoning districts.

Most of the discussion revolved around whether existing gas stations would have to comply with the proposed standards, especially if they were to rebuild for any reason.

Tom Brown, director of Forsyth

County Department of Planning and Community Development, said part of the challenge in trying to decide if existing gas stations comply or not is the county has not written policy yet.

“Will it be based on the entire lot or gas canopy, or building, undisturbed area?” Brown said. “Most likely some existing gas stations would not comply and would fall into the non-conforming status. But we’re early on.”

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said another problem is that Forsyth County is considered a bedroom community, so many subdivisions were built prior to any nearby commercial establishments.

“They came in before our roads had been widened and the infrastructure,” Mills said. “Just like some of the gas stations in my district, which you all have,

too. Now we’re getting much higher quality gas stations coming in where you have a chance of those putting some of your unsavory ones out of business.”

While that would be a positive outcome, Mills said, the proposed buffer might stop that from occurring.

“Let the free market take care of itself,” Mills said. “Typically, you don’t have a gas station that doesn’t want to be in a busy corridor. I’ve sold a lot of real estate and have not had high demand for a service station that wanted to go in areas that are not high volume.”

Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson said she is worried about the busy corridors, including Ga. 20, Ga. 141 and Ga. 369.

“Some subdivisions have come in even in the last 10 years or so,” she said.

“Along some state roads, that might cause some issues. The way the growth has been, it’s coming in the form of residential.

Sometimes it was residential came first, sometimes it was the gas station.”

Commissioner Todd Levent said many residents have said they do not want a gas station within 250 feet of their backyard.

“There is light pollution and noise pollution — 250 feet is not a far distance,” he said. “That number is reasonable. We’re just trying to protect people who live in neighborhoods today from gas stations built tomorrow.”

Commissioner Dennis Brown said this is a big issue in his community of District 2.

“I’ve been beat up on it quite a bit on a lot of occasions,” Brown said.

Mental Health Committee discusses insurance resources

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — As mental health becomes more commonly discussed, companies are taking note, including insurance-giant Aetna.

Aetna Vice President Thomas Hunter-James and Senior Strategic Planner Aimee Prange provided insights on how communities are joining forces to address the issue at the Mental Health and Wellness Committee meeting Feb. 25.

“Behavioral health touches so much and affects us,” Hunter-James said. “It affects our customers, not just them but their community. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from. I really appreciate that’s finally getting attention.”

Prange, a licensed clinical social worker for nearly 25 years, praised the committee for its great work in coming together to tackle the mental illness struggles they see around them.

“There is so much stigma around mental health,” she said. “One in five Americans is diagnosed with mental illness in any given year. It’s likely either you, someone you know or love and care about is struggling with a mental illness. The challenge is you can’t see it a lot of times.”

Another challenge is that those suffering with mental illness can wait for up to 10 years to access treatment, she said.

“Imagine if you had a physical illness that you let fester for 10 years,” Prange said. “That’s significant.

Only 40 percent of individuals even seek treatment.

That’s way too low.”

There are many reasons why people do not get help, she said.

“Some of it is how mental illness is portrayed,” Prange said. “Some people feel ashamed to be associated with it. There is no difference with a mental illness than a physical illness. Why would we treat them any differently?”

There are other barriers, including monetary limits, not knowing where the services are offered or that they are offered at all.

“I talk to individuals all over the place and didn’t even know what was available in their own communities,” she said. “But they knew they were struggling.

There are great programs, not only through insurance or communities. But the system is flawed as well. It’s a Catch 22.”

In an effort to spread awareness around mental illness, Prange became a certified instructor for mental health first aid and now travels the country educating communities.

There are more than 10,000 instructors across the country who have completed an 8-hour instruction course designed for the community.

“The goal is to not only create awareness to reduce stigma, but to teach individuals about the signs and symptoms to let you know someone may be developing an illness,” Prange said. “Even if it doesn’t get as far as

an official diagnosis, it lets you know someone is having a hard time.”

Mental health first aid teaches how to be supportive and what to do if they witness symptoms.

“It doesn’t always have to be a crisis, but it’ll teach you what to do if it is,” she said. “It’ll teach you how to help someone and encourage individuals toward selfhelp or professional help.”

While the curriculum is broken down for age groups or types of issues, Prange said anything might help someone.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what somebody’s diagnosis is,” she said. “It’s more about how to help and support somebody.”

The next committee meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. on March 25 at United Way, 240 Elm Street in Cumming.

Who decides?

Johns Creek opposes state efforts to deregulate rules on home design

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council voted unanimously Feb. 25 to oppose a state bill which would prevent municipal and county governments from regulating residential building design.

A version of the bill has been proposed by both chambers of the Georgia General Assembly. House Bill 302 has passed the agriculture committee, while Senate Bill 172 awaits review by the government oversight committee.

The bills would prohibit local governments from adopting or enforcing ordinances or regulations relating to building designs, such as color, material, roof shape or window or door style, on one or two-family dwellings.

The bill includes a few exceptions, such as homes located within a historic district. It would also allow the regulation of home design through private covenants, such as home owners associations.

“This is a very dangerous precedent that they’re setting to home rule and to our ability to control the look and feel of our community,” Mayor Mike Bodker said.

Bodker said the bill, if enacted, could drastically change the aesthetics of neighborhoods, even allowing cinderblock homes.

“This is just the state taking rights away from individuals and the communities,” Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said. “And it’s being driven through lobbyists who want to be able to control the outcome.”

Councilman John Bradberry echoed Endres in saying that the bill was a violation of separation of powers.

“A lot of the same people that are complaining about the federal government usurping the rights and responsibilities of the states are the same people that are championing taking this responsibility and authority from the locals and taking it to the state level,” he said.

Several council members urged residents to contact their state representatives and ask them to vote against the bill.

in their particular areas of governance,” Councilman Steve Broadbent said. “It’s an important bill to fight.”

At a Feb. 24 Town Hall, Rep. Angelika Kausche said she had received emails from constituents both in favor of and against the bill. Kausche, a Democrat, represents District 50 which is entirely in Johns Creek.

“I have a lot of questions about this bill,” she said. “I’m very hesitant to say where I want to go with this, but unless my questions are being answered, I really don’t see how I could support this bill right now.”

Kausche said the bill was not about the state taking power from the cities, but a question of cities’ rights versus individual rights.

“It definitely would limit local control for city governments,” Kausche added.

“What it was intended to do is to give more control to individuals. For example, someone who wants to build their house and doesn’t want to have any restrictions.”

Rep. Chuck Martin, a Republican who represents Alpharetta and parts of west Johns Creek, said he was in no uncertain terms opposed to the bill.

“HB 302 seeks to preempt local zoning ordinances that have been adopted by local governments in House District 49 and around the state, ordinances that protect our neighborhood home values,” Martin said.

Martin serves on the House Rules Committee, which will decide if the bill makes it to the floor.

“I have vocally expressed that opposition in my questioning of the author of HB 302 in the House Rules Committee on Feb. 27 and will continue my opposition there, and as needed on the House Floor,” Martin said.

Alpharetta, Dunwoody and Forsyth County have also adopted resolutions opposing the bill. The Georgia Municipal Association, a group that lobbies on behalf of Georgia’s cities, also opposes the bill.

The Johns Creek Community Association, which represents the city’s HOAs, does not take positions on political issues. But the group did send an email to its members educating them on the bill, which they only do for contentious matters, President Marybeth Cooper said.

“It has great impact not just in Johns Creek, but I think across the board,” Cooper said. “In Johns Creek we, just like many areas in North Fulton, have a standard. There’s building codes.”

Current Johns Creek zoning ordinances require builders to use brick, stone or other approved materials on home exteriors, but some developers would prefer to use cheaper materials like vinyl, Cooper said.

“We believe this is critical to our membership because there are some areas, even within our membership, that are being developed,” she said. “We have a lot of active homebuilding going on in Johns Creek.”

Forsyth County hosts literacy initiative

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — On Tuesday, March 12, the Leap into Literacy with Peter Rabbit literacy initiative will be held at Cumming Elementary School in the Cafeteria at 5:30 p.m.

The Leap into Literacy initiative allows Forsyth County preschoolers to develop the early literacy skills required for success in kindergarten. At the event, there will be a special parent education program, preschool story time, a puppet show, book character visit and other literacy activities.

A story time of Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” will be followed up with a visit from Peter Rabbit to help children find joy and excitement in reading.

Forsyth County’s Director Amy Chang, a team of librarians, educators, volunteers and translators will lead activities during the event to show parents and caregivers how to practice the skills learned at Leap into Literacy at home.

Each participating child will receive a free book courtesy of Barnes & Noble at The Collection and Scholastic, as well as an activity kit created by the Leap into Literacy organizers.

Don’t forget the binoculars!

You may remember that one of my Christmas presents was a set of birdwatching binoculars.

Where are my expeditions taking me? Sometimes no farther than the back yard. I’m liking this birdwatching thing. In fact, the patch of woods at the back of our lot is about as convenient as it gets. It used to be grass.

But a while back I decided to do my part for wildlife and let it go natural — you know, creating habitat and all that.

Besides, I told myself, if I let it go natural, I won’t have to worry about cutting all that extra grass. That would mean more time for fishing or birdwatching or whatever else seems more enjoyable than yard work, which is just about everything. See how logical that is? Yes, logic is a wonderful thing.

Close-to-home birdwatching is fun, but there’s always something to be said

for “going somewhere,” whether for fishing or hiking or birdwatching or whatever. That may be why, the other day, I found myself planning a rambling excursion somewhere up in the mountains.

“I think I’ll go northwest,” I said, “and see what I can see.”

“You ought to take your binoculars!”

Wife of Mine replied. “There might be birds.”

“Good idea!” I replied, and so I set them on the table so I wouldn’t forget them, unless of course I forgot them, which is exactly what I did.

My day in the mountains was refreshing. Some days it’s nice just to wander, and this was definitely one of those days.

Eventually, about mid-afternoon, I decided to head home. But then there it was — a sign pointing to what is, for me, one of the most irresistible points of interest you’ll find — a dam.

Specifically, the sign pointed the way to the Carter’s Lake Lower Pool Reregulation Dam. That was a new one for me.

Curious, I followed the signs. What I found when I got there was a concrete dam of the classic sort — a massive, gray, vaguely brooding monolith that stretched across the Coosawattee River

— and thanks to all the rain we’ve had, the water was roaring through, too.

Standing on the top of the dam (yes, you can walk across it) and leaning on the railing and looking down at the resulting turbulence was mesmerizing in that funny kind of way that gives you goosebumps and makes your knees a little weak and causes your blood pressure to rise. Like a really good roller coaster, it

was kind of terrifying but also a heck of a lot of fun.

After a while, I turned to head back to the truck. That’s when I saw the sign.

It was a big ol’ sign, and it read “Hidden Pond Trail Songbird Management Area.”

And there was a trail…

Denmark High administrator brings experience to new school

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Assistant Principal Bob Carnaroli is no stranger to opening new high schools in Forsyth County, including Denmark High School last fall.

Denmark High marked Carnaroli’s third time helping start a new high school in the district.

He was the head counselor at North Forsyth High School when it opened and stayed for 13 years.

Then he was asked to open West Forsyth High School in 2007. While there, he worked with Denmark High’s Principal Heather Gordy, so she asked him to join her when she switched schools.

Transitioning to a new school with Gordy helped Carnaroli since they already know the other’s work style.

“It’s a challenge I enjoy, obviously,” he said. “I feel it lends to my skill set in building community, getting things organized and having a vision of what things should look like.”

Even though Denmark High has a 5-year plan, Carnaroli said the staff has to hit the ground running immediately.

As an added challenge, Carnaroli was working at both Denmark High and West Forsyth High until October, so he had to juggle both sets of responsibilities.

“We have to give our kids all the opportunities and courses they would have had if they stayed at their other schools,” he said. “It’s a big task, but if you’ve

done it before it helps because you’re in such a time crunch to pull it off.”

Carnaroli is responsible for handling the curriculum at Denmark, including the master schedule,

course registration, ESOL, special education, world language and counseling.

Over his career, Carnaroli’s duties have adapted depending on the school.

When North Forsyth High opened, there were fewer than 400 students enrolled. Then at West Forsyth High, it opened with around 1,000 students.

Last August, Denmark High opened a bit bigger, and will grow quicker than the other two schools did, he said. The school is expected to enroll 600 more students by the next school year, bringing them to about 2,000 students total in its second year open.

“People want to be here,” he said. “They like what’s going on and love the facility. Mrs. Gordy has done a great job hiring people here. She believes in relationships, and we all do. We want positive people in front of kids. Our community deserves that.”

Before Carnaroli become an assistant principal, he was a school counselor for 24 years.

“I try to find the good in people as much as I possibly can,” he said. “I like the challenge of an email, phone call or personal conversation with parents, students and staff about how I can help them get through things. I like to help folks regardless of the situation.”

He also enjoys attending student activities including sports games, competitions or concerts.

“I want to be all in,” he said. “I talk to many folks who a lot of times are just looking for information.

Sometimes it’s something deeper they’re struggling with. Anybody that’s working with people has counseling skills if you think about it.”

Songbirds, eh? I knew I should have brought those binoculars with me! Like my fly rod, they’re probably destined to become a regular item in my outdoor adventure bag. On that day, though, all I had was my eyes.

From the parking area, walk past the sign. The trail turns right and crosses a creek, climbs a little hill, and soon takes you to a loop. To your left is a longer bridge which crosses a wetland area; to your right, the trail follows a clearing, then turns left (look for a trail sign) and heads back toward the lake, eventually crossing another bridge over the same creek. Just beyond that bridge, look for a pathway turning left; it follows the edge of the wetlands and eventually enters a cleared area and the far end of the long bridge over the wetland. You can also follow the clearing back to your car.

Make sense? It will when you hike it.

One of the neatest things about the loop portion of this trail is that it takes you to a number of blinds built specifically with bird watching in mind. You’ll find these blinds at several points along the trail. They make it easy to observe the wetlands wildlife — especially if (yeah, yeah) you don’t leave your binoculars on the kitchen table.

But even without fancy optics, I saw birds — lots of birds — big ones, small ones, large flocks and small groups of two or three. Most were songbirds, but I saw a couple of hawks and some wading birds too. I expect there will be many more as the weather warms, and this is now on my list of places to revisit It should offer many opportunities for birdwatching of the first order — especially if I don’t leave the binoculars at home.

The Hidden Pond Trail Songbird Management Area is located at the Carters Lake Reregulation Dam Recreation Area. It is accessed via Highway 136 and Old Highway 411. The trailhead is located near the beginning of the parking area.

South Forsyth student receives national award for volunteerism

By AYNUR RAUF interns@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — South Forsyth High School Senior Anish Bikmal was selected Georgia’s high school honoree for the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Award, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Bikmal will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense paid trip in early May to Washington D.C., where he will join honorees from other states for four days of national recognition events.

Bikmal earned the honoree title in part through his help in creating the Motivate and Inspire Academy which also served as a non-profit fundraising organization. Bikmal’s academy donates all profits to charities like Food for Life Global, a network of food relief organizations and wellness services, and Share Your Care Charity, a community relief effort that provides affordable health care services to the needy, Earthquake Nepal and Syrian Refugee Crisis reliefs.

Realtor stresses choice in price points ZKTeco to bring as Forsyth County continues to grow $5 million, 40 jobs to Alpharetta

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County has a lot working in its favor in the real estate industry, according to Frank Norton, noted real estate expert in north Georgia.

Norton spoke at the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce Commercial Real Estate Roundtable Feb. 28 at ServPro. He said the county’s demographics play a large role in the local housing market, and that leaders need to be aware of the importance of things such as affordable housing.

Norton said the estimated population of Forsyth County in 2018 was 227,967. He compared it to Johns Creek which has been an official city for more than a decade and had an estimated population in 2018 of 202,957.

“Your population growth is so strong, that it is eclipsing almost any other county in the state,” Norton said.

“A fairly sizeable wedge is coming out of Forsyth County and going to Johns Creek. Visualize what that will look like in 2040. In 2040, we are projecting Forsyth County to be somewhere in the 275,000-300,000 people.”

One challenge facing Forsyth is the lack of affordable housing for low income families and residents.

“The county has changed,” he said.

“We need housing. I have been preaching for 20 years that the key to a good, strong community is having multiple price points of housing. You have to

have some low income, subsidized and rental, some not subsidized and some luxury, and single-family residences.”

The average family, with average credit who want to buy the average house, will not live in Forsyth County, Norton said.

“You’re importing that labor to run the county,” he said. “That will get compounded more over the next five years than the last 20 years.”

Forsyth County has been named as one of the fastest growing counties nationwide, Norton said.

Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced Feb. 20 that the company is moving its U.S. headquarters from Fairfield, New Jersey to Fulton County. The move is expected to bring 40 new jobs and invest over $5 million in relocation and expansion.

The new jobs will consist of inside sales, technical support, research and development, light assembly, quality control and logistics personnel.

1. Updates and Renovations There are many types of renovations, updates and upgrades you can do to a home to boost its value when putting it on the market. ters like flooding or mold, this negative history can weigh on your resale value.

4. “Middle-Aged” Homes New constructions and historic structures both tend to sell well — the former due to space and amenities, the later due to “charm factor” (especially if it’s restored and well maintained).

However, there’s a sort of “soft zone” for homes that are 30-50 years old — homes that have dated appearances or odd layouts that don’t fit well with modern living — that tend to sell for less than their comparable counterparts.

Choosing a shutter style Exterior Shutters can really make or break the exterior of your home and plays a vital role in the overall curb appeal.

One of the items to consider is the STYLE of shutter that will look good on your home and give that final touch to complete the picture.

Dupbel Millworks Inc. is set up to create unique custom styles while offering a variety of standard styles to choose from. Let’s discuss some of the standard styles most commonly used.

Board and Batten Shutters A shutter typically composed of three to five vertical boards that are connected using two or three horizontal battens. These shutters inspire a country or cottage look and have grown in popularity in the last few years. The latest trend is to have multiple narrow boards to create a cleaner, more sophisticated look. This style lends itself to adding additional interest by adding diagonal pieces or even strap hinges.

Paneled Shutters This traditional style consists of panels within a frame.

This shutter style’s popularity during the last number of decades has firmly entrenched it as the “traditional look.” Especially with the panels you can select a number of styles based on your preference. We can start off with a Flat panel, giving a very smooth and minimalistic look. Or you can do the very traditional Raised panel, providing a more three-dimensional appearance. Our Shaker Raised panels gives you even more depth while keeping it very classic and stylish.

The Mission style panel is another option, where it is incorporating design elements from the Board and Batten style, but with a much more sophisticated look.

The size and placement of the panels will typically follow the window design, but lately we’ve seen a lot of deviation from the traditional to jazz it up a little bit. We can incorporate a small panel in the center, make them single panels, or even 3 equal panels, all depending on the look the home owner wants to create.

Louvered Shutters.

Louvered styled shutters are the original “classic standard,” found on period buildings such as Antebellum, Colonial, Williamsburg, Georgian and Federal styled houses. Louvered shutters create an additional architectural element to enhance the house’s façade. Louvered shutters can also be the right choice for Contemporary styled buildings wishing to create a more traditional appearance. For a slightly more modern look you can make the slats wider to give a cleaner, less busy appearance.

Quartz or Granite. These are the absolute standards. Don’t consider anything but these options. Whether for style, aesthetics, function or durability; an updated kitchen must have granite or quartz. Stay away from complicated edges, like ogee, and keep is simple.

Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields gorgeous kitchens.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2018 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

The Total Kitchen. Bringing all of these elements together is what makes truly gorgeous kitchens and they don’t need to be ultra expensive; they just need to be well planned. The more time you spend on planning, the better the kitchen will turn out.

Forsyth Fire Department sponsors poster contest FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Fire Department invites all local third grade students to participate in the eighth annual Forsyth County Fire Safety Poster Contest to show their artistic talents and promote commitment to fire safety.

The contest is open to all third-grade students in Forsyth County public, private and homeschools. The posters should reflect one of the following themes: “Two Ways Out,” “Firefighter Are Our Friends,” and “Get Low and Go.” One winner and runner-up winner for each theme will be chosen. The three winners will earn a class pizza party with local firefighters. Both runner-up winners and main winners will have their artwork displayed in county building and receive a certificate of accomplishment from the Forsyth County Fire Chief.

All posters should be created on paper within the minimum dimensions of 8.5 by 11 inches and maximum dimensions of 18 by 24 inches.

Contest rules and entry forms can be found on the Fire Department page of the Forsyth County website at forsythco.com.

Cisco employees have recently began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to build homes.

Cisco forms partnership with Habitat for Humanity FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Cisco employees from North and South America have recently traveled to Georgia to help build homes as part of a new national partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Cisco provided the funding and volunteers from their Americas sales team to help construct the homes over 12 week-long builds.

“Our team thrives on opportunities like this one to be the light and make an impact in our communities,” Senior Vice President and Head of Cisco’s Americas Sales organization Jeff Sharritts said.

More than 300 Cisco employees volunteered alongside the families.

Over the course of construction, the volunteers participated in framing, hanging drywall, installing siding, painting and doing landscape work.

Forsyth County begins monthly siren tests FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Beginning in March, Forsyth County will be replacing the severe weather siren test tone with a warning tone for all monthly siren tests.

“The decision to begin conducting the siren tests with the warning tone

instead of the test tone was made to help avoid confusion and to help residents recognize what the alarm signifies should there be an actually tornado warning in the county,” EMA Director Chris Grimes said.

Forsyth County has 17 outdoor severe weather sirens located throughout the county to notify residents that severe weather is in the area.
