JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Waffle House on Jones Bridge Road and Shell Gas Station on State Bridge were robbed by armed men Feb. 21.

Around 2:30 a.m., police responded to an incident at Waffle House. An employee told police a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a black duffle bag walked into the restaurant.

He pulled a shiny silver gun from his bag and demanded the money from the cash register, the employee said. He told the other employee not to move and threatened them.

After taking the money, an estimated $300, he ran out the door and turned left, fleeing on foot.

The suspect was described as a white man in his mid-30s, with a slim build wearing a black mask and a green shirt.

$400 in Scotch missing after restaurant break-in JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to Stone’s Cuisine and Cocktails on Jan. 20 in response to a burglary that occurred overnight.

The manager called police after he saw the side door was damaged. Police saw scratches around the lock as if it had been pried open.

Inside, there were lights on that had been turned off at closing. A shelf behind the bar was damaged with about $200 in wine glasses scattered and smashed across the floor.

The cash drawer was open, but the manager said the cash was stored in a safe and nothing was stolen. Behind the bar, both computer points of sale terminals were damaged.

The burglar also rummaged through the office, but nothing appeared missing.

In liquor storage, about $400 in Scotch was missing.

The cameras and alarm system were not active because the restaurant was in the process of upgrading them.

The same night around 9:45 police responded a call from Shell. The cashier said the store was robbed by a white man, about 5’9” and 160 pounds, with a slim build wearing a black mask, green jacket and blue jeans.

The cashier said the robber took $750 in cash. Surveillance videos showed the suspect walked up in from behind the car wash and stood outside for a few minutes before coming inside.

He paced around the back of the store before the cashier approached him. The robber then pulled out a silver handgun and demanded money.

The cashier said the robber did not point the gun directly at him, and he put the gun back in the handbag while the cashier retrieved the money. The suspect left the way he came.

Wallets and keys stolen in series of car larcenies JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Several Hillbrooke subdivision residents reported items were stolen from their unlocked cars overnight between Feb. 18 and 19.

A Johns View Street resident said someone went through a BMW and a Kia parked in the driveway. From the BMW, a black and white Tommy Hilfiger wallet containing a driver’s license and several bank cards was stolen. The KIA was entered but nothing was missing.

Another Johns View Street neighbor said the keys to her Chevy Traverse were stolen from the vehicle.

A North Hillbrooke Trace neighbor said her wallet and purse were missing from the center console of her Honda.

The car was unlocked and parked in the driveway. The wallet contained $100 cash, a debit card and a credit card.

Thief removes gun from locked pickup JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man reported Feb. 24 that his gun was stolen from his GMC Sierra pickup truck.

The man told police he parked the truck in the driveway of his Chantenay Place home around 1 a.m. Around 9:30

that morning he saw the driver’s side window had been smashed.

A black 9 mm pistol, loaded magazine and several knives, the items worth $1,100 total, were missing from the vehicle. It appeared the thief used a rock to break the window.

The car was locked, but the alarm did not go off. The owner said the gun was in the driver’s door pocket and would have been visible from outside.

The knives were in the center console.

His wallet, with cash in it, was not taken.

The man told police he had only had the pistol about a week and only close friends knew about it. He told police of a possible suspect, a man he met through Facebook marketplace and sold a car speaker to the night before.

Wedding dress missing after county club event JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman called police Feb. 21 after she was unable to find her $2,000 wedding dress.

The woman told police that after her Feb. 16 wedding ceremony, she took the dress off at the venue, the Country Club of the South.

Later, she realized the dress was missing. She checked with her family and with country club staff who were unable to locate the dress.

Who decides?

Johns Creek opposes state efforts to deregulate rules on home design

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council voted unanimously Feb. 25 to oppose a state bill which would prevent municipal and county governments from regulating residential building design.

A version of the bill has been proposed by both chambers of the Georgia General Assembly. House Bill 302 has passed the agriculture committee, while Senate Bill 172 awaits review by the government oversight committee.

The bills would prohibit local governments from adopting or enforcing ordinances or regulations relating to building designs, such as color, material, roof shape or window or door style, on one or two-family dwellings.

The bill includes a few exceptions, such as homes located within a historic district. It would also allow the regulation of home design through private covenants, such as home owners associations.

“This is a very dangerous precedent that they’re setting to home rule and to our ability to control the look and feel of our community,” Mayor Mike Bodker said.

Bodker said the bill, if enacted, could

drastically change the aesthetics of neighborhoods, even allowing cinderblock homes.

“This is just the state taking rights away from individuals and the communities,” Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said. “And it’s being driven through lobbyists who want to be able to control the outcome.”

Councilman John Bradberry echoed Endres in saying that the bill was a violation of separation of powers.

“A lot of the same people that are complaining about the federal government usurping the rights and responsibilities of the states are the same people that are championing taking this responsibility and authority from the locals and taking it to the state level,” he said.

Several council members urged residents to contact their state representatives and ask them to vote against the bill.

municipalities and counties that want to control the look of residential products in their particular areas of governance,” Councilman Steve Broadbent said. “It’s an important bill to fight.”

At a Feb. 24 Town Hall, Rep. Angelika Kausche said she had received emails from constituents both in favor of and against the bill. Kausche, a Democrat, represents District 50 which is entirely in Johns Creek.

“I have a lot of questions about this bill,” she said. “I’m very hesitant to say where I want to go with this, but unless my questions are being answered, I really don’t see how I could support this bill right now.”

Kausche said the bill was not about the state taking power from the cities, but a question of cities’ rights versus individual rights.

“It definitely would limit local control for city governments,” Kausche added.

“What it was intended to do is to give more control to individuals. For example, someone who wants to build their house and doesn’t want to have any restrictions.”

Rep. Chuck Martin, a Republican who represents Alpharetta and parts of west Johns Creek, said he was in no uncertain terms opposed to the bill.

“HB 302 seeks to preempt local zoning ordinances that have been adopted by local governments in House District 49 and around the state, ordinances that protect our neighborhood home values,” Martin said.

Martin serves on the House Rules Committee, which will decide if the bill makes it to the floor.

“I have vocally expressed that opposition in my questioning of the author of HB 302 in the House Rules Committee on Feb. 27 and will continue my opposi-

tion there, and as needed on the House Floor,” Martin said.

State Sen. John Albers concurred.

“I have vocally expressed that opposition in my questioning of the author of HB 302 in the House Rules Committee on Feb. 27 and will continue my opposition there, and as needed on the House Floor,” Martin said. ‘“I applaud Johns Creek and the other cities which have also reached out,” Albers said. “I adamantly oppose Senate Bill 172. Local control is critical to protecting our citizens and communities.”

Alpharetta, Dunwoody and Forsyth County have also adopted resolutions opposing the bill. The Georgia Municipal Association, a group that lobbies on behalf of Georgia’s cities, also opposes the bill.

The Johns Creek Community Association, which represents the city’s HOAs, does not take positions on political issues. But the group did send an email to its members educating them on the bill, which they only do for contentious matters, President Marybeth Cooper said.

“It has great impact not just in Johns Creek, but I think across the board,” Cooper said. “In Johns Creek we, just like many areas in North Fulton, have a standard. There’s building codes.”

Current Johns Creek zoning ordinances require builders to use brick, stone or other approved materials on home exteriors, but some developers would prefer to use cheaper materials like vinyl, Cooper said.

“We believe this is critical to our membership because there are some areas, even within our membership, that are being developed,” she said. “We have a lot of active homebuilding going on in Johns Creek.”

State legislators address elections, medical billing at town hall

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Freshmen state legislators Sen. Zahra Karinshak and Rep. Angelika Kausche explained their stance on local issues and heard resident feedback at a town hall Feb. 24.

One topic that was top of mind for many attendees was election reform.

Asked about a bill that would make it easy for independent candidates to appear on the ballot, the Democratic representatives said they favored the idea, but that it would be a small part of fixing Georgia’s elections.

“As a veteran who fought for this country and the ability for us to be of and by and for the people, I am in favor of those as ideas and ideals,” Karinshak said.

The legislators also discussed the state’s plans for replacing election equipment. Both said they had questions about ballot marking machines, the kind of equipment favored by Republicans, such as how long they would last and what the operation costs would be.

A few days after the town hall, Feb. 26, Kausche voted against House Bill

316, which would make ballot marking machines the equipment of choice for the state.

The bill was opposed by Democrats who said hand-marked paper ballots are less expensive and preferred by cybersecurity experts. Despite their objections, the bill passed the House 101-72.

Kausche acknowledged the bill included other proposals she supported, like eliminating the exact match requirement for absentee ballots.

Another topic of discussion was state legislation that some say would take away city control. House Bill 302 and Senate Bill 172 would take away municipalities’ ability to regulate home designs.

Relatedly, House Bill 184 would give utilities greater freedom in deploying fifth-generation wireless equipment in public right of way, overriding revised ordinances put in place by Alpharetta and Johns Creek last year.

Kausche said she voted for the bill because she saw it as a compromise. It was endorsed by telecom companies and the Georgia Municipal Association.

When asked about stormwater, the elected officials said it was a city issue, but offered to help the city research its options.

Karinshak said she was optimistic something would get through the Senate but was unsure what would happen in the House.

“That is an issue that I think is majorly important, tied to the overall healthcare discussion,” Kausche said.

Another bill sponsored by Karinshak would require dyslexia screening for students in kindergarten through second

grade. Karinshak said she is dyslexic herself and knows the importance of early assistance.

Construction overview shows challenges, success in Fulton Schools Rising material costs, shrinking labor force test district’s budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com The escalating cost of building new schools and renovating older ones is challenging the Fulton County School System as it tackles more than $230 million in current and planned projects in the coming months.

School officials, however, note efficient scheduling and realistic metrics keep the district on budget and on schedule despite the external challenges.

During a School Board work session in February, district officials outlined recent accomplishments, upcoming summer projects and the challenges and priorities of the five-year Capital Program which ends in 2022.

“The Capital Projects team will execute 49 renovations this summer and four [ongoing] large projects contracted at over $231 million,” said Deputy Superintendent of Operations Patrick Burke. “This is a big year coming up.”

This summer 20 area schools are

slated for projects, including replacement of fire alarms and roofs, upgrades to security systems and general renovations to keep the schools fully functioning.

Last summer, projects were completed at 22 area schools. Those projects included moving Independence High School from Milton Center back to its original Roswell location and other smaller-scale projects, such as new playground equipment and media centers.

“Sometimes we do big, flashy projects that are really cool, and sometimes we do little projects that make all the difference [to students] and what we are most proud of,” said Barbara Colman, program manager for Jacobs Construction which oversees the district’s construction program.

The economic recovery has changed the landscape of construction, with greater demand for services competing with a diminished labor pool, and driving up costs.

Bill McCorkle, vice president with Evergreen Construction, told the board construction costs have been rising 5 to 6 percent since the economy came out of the recession in 2012.

He cited the examples of Johns Creek High School and Cambridge High school, similarly-designed schools built three years apart but at very different costs.

This summer 20 area schools are slated for projects, including replacement of fire alarms and roofs, upgrades to security systems and general renovations to keep the schools fully functioning. build in 2007; Cambridge came in at $43.3 million three years later at the peak of the recession in 2010. “[Cambridge represented] a 23 percent decrease in three years in a market that was deeply depressed…and remained that way for quite some time,” said McCorkle, whose firm specializes in school construction.

He noted the higher costs today reflect a correction in the industry, with costs returning to where the industry can maintain sustainability.

Margaret Rauber of Atlanta-based Winters Construction also briefed the board on the declining pool of qualified workers and its impact on construction.

“The manpower is absolutely a challenge for us in the region, and all major contractors are reporting staffing challenges,” Rauber said.

She noted the construction industry

has not returned to the staffing levels seen prior to the downturn when many left for other opportunities. Additionally, the average age of the skilled construction worker is in the mid-50s, so many are headed to retirement.

“We are all fighting over a stretched work force with fewer people [to choose] from,” Rauber said.

Fulton School Board member Katha Stuart said the school system recognizes the need for construction skills, pointing to the program in place in the Roswell area. A curriculum in Construction Technology is in place at the elementary school leading all the way to high school to provide a deep understanding of the industry and its opportunities.

Board member Julia Bernath also encouraged the construction companies to offer internships to students to get them interested in the industry.

Lawmakers close loophole on school bus law

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com A bill signed into law this month by Gov. Brian Kemp clarifies the rules of engagement between drivers and school buses when stopped to load and unload children.

Senate Bill 25 clears up the “unintended consequences” of House Bill 978 passed last year, which raised concerns about when drivers had to stop for school buses.

According to legal opinions, the old law in place could be interpreted to allow drivers to continue driving as long as they were on the opposite side of the roadway divided by only a turn lane.

The new legislation allows only drivers on the opposite side of a four-lane roadway to continue traveling only if the roadway is separated by a grass median, unpaved area, or physical barrier (concrete wall, guardrails, etc.). A center turn lane does not qualify as a median.

SB 25 was one of the first pieces of legislation tackled by lawmakers in the early days of the current Legislative Session and passed quickly and unanimously in both chambers.

Fulton County School officials praised the new law, which makes driver

expectations clear when approaching a stopped school bus.

“Fulton County Schools completely supports the new law’s clarification of when to stop for a school bus during the student loading and/or unloading process,” said Sam Ham, executive director of the district’s Transportation Department. “The [law] will allow school districts and the State DOE to better educate the motoring public when it is necessary to stop for the school bus, ultimately enhancing student safety.”

Lawmakers chose to keep in place the fine of $250 for violating the school bus stop law, passed under HB 978. Previously, the fine had been up to $1,000.

• On a four-lane or more roadway without a physical separation all traffic must stop.

• On a four-lane or more divided highway with a median separation, only drivers following the school bus must stop.

Orchestra to present special concert for hearing impaired

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2018-2019 season with “An Evening of French Music” on Saturday, March 16, at the Johns Creek United Methodist Church, 11180 Medlock Bridge Road.

The performance will be made accessible to patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing through an American Sign Language interpreter, written text translations and balloons to enhance vibrations.

There will also be a pre-concert presentation, translated into ASL, on stage at 6:15 p.m. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be conducted by orchestra founder and Music Director Wayne Baughman, and Nathan Frank, director of the Johns Creek Chorale.

Soloists will include Concertmaster Adelaide Federici and organist Jeremy Rush.

The concert will open with Edouard Lalo’s “Romance-Sérénade,” which will feature Federici on violin. The concert continues with Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess.”

The Johns Creek United Methodist Church’s Aeolian-Skinner Organ was salvaged from Trinity Church in New York after the 9/11 attacks. Located just blocks from the World Trade Center, it was thought dust from the tower’s

collapse had irreparably damaged the instrument. But the organ was restored and installed in Johns Creek in 2016.

“This remarkable instrument is an artistic treasure of Johns Creek, lovingly restored and relocated to our city from the area of devastation near Ground Zero in New York City,” Baughman said. “In the hands of organist Jeremy Rush, this powerful instrument will provide an unforgettable sonic and aural experience.”

The before-show presentation will include an up-close look at the organ, a review of its history, a discussion of how the instrument works, a live demonstration of the capabilities of the instrument and a Q&A session.

“Due to the very physical nature of this organ’s vibrations, we thought that this particular performance would be an excellent opportunity for us to reach out to people who are deaf or hard of hearing,” Orchestra Executive Director Linda Brill said. “We wanted to create an environment where people of all hearing abilities can experience the beauty of classical music.”

Johns Creek reconsiders storage facility zoning

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council voted unanimously Feb. 26 to allow a previously denied zoning petition to be resubmitted.

In February 2017, the council denied a petition to build a multistory storage facility at 11105 Jones Bridge Road, a lot currently zoned for office.

The city’s zoning ordinance requires that if a petition is denied, the owner must wait 12 months and demonstrate a significant difference from the earlier proposal before it can be resubmitted.

The new proposal differs from the original in size. While the original proposal was 55 feet, or three-stories, from street view, the new proposal is for 29-feet, or two stories. Staff reports state the primary concerns in the denial were the size of the facility and appearance from the street.

The council unanimously agreed to allow the petition to move forward, in line with the recommendation of the Community Development Department and Assistant City Attorney Ronald Bennett.

This petition will now move forward through the normal zoning procedure.

In other business, the council voted to use eminent domain to seize two parcels along Abbotts Bridge Road from the homeowner associations of Abbotts Bridge Place and The Communities at Wellington.

Bennett explained the covenants for these HOAs require approval of 67 percent of lots and 67 percent of first mortgage holders to voluntarily sell the land. Given this threshold, the attorney for the HOAs, with the support of the HOA boards, asked the city to use its power of eminent domain.

The council’s vote was 6-1, with Councilwoman Stephanie Endres opposed.

“There were other options we could have looked at and we didn’t,” she said.

“Basically, eminent domain concerns me when we use it out of expediency.”

The city will pay Abbotts Bridge Place, $10,759 for 123 square feet of right of way and 361 square feet of permanent easement and 6,926 square feet of temporary driveway easement.

From Wellington, the city will acquire 3,488 square feet of right of way and 5,597 square feet of permanent easement for $124,700, which includes compensation for entryway signs, landscaping and irrigation.

The land was acquired as part of the planned traffic project on Abbotts Bridge Road, or Ga. 120, from Parsons Road to Primrose Parkway. The project will include turn lane improvements, medians and the addition of an 8-to-10-foot sidewalk along both sides of the road.

Johns Creek libraries prepare for renovations

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Both libraries in Johns Creek will be closed for renovations for most of 2019, and architects have narrowed in on designs for the facilities.

Northeast Spruill Oaks Library, at 9560 Spruill Road, is scheduled to close April 15 and is expected to reopen in late fall. Dr. Robert. E. Fulton Ocee Library, at 5090 Abbotts Bridge Road, will close June 3, and is expected to reopen January 2020.

The renovations are part of a $275 million Fulton County bond referendum passed in 2008. Phase I of the library bond funded construction of eight new branches, including Alpharetta, East Roswell and Milton.

With a budget of $108 million, Phase II involves the renovation of 22 existing libraries. Accessibility, modernization and sustainability are the aims of all the renovations. Both Johns Creek locations are pursuing LEED Silver certification.

The renovations for Spruill

Oaks and Ocee will include repairs to exterior walls and the roofs; a refresh to paint and flooring; LED lighting; new furniture and updated technology, including self-checkout stations.

Both libraries are getting small study rooms for two to six patrons, a sale and storage area for the Friends of the Library groups, a café area in the lobby and a dedicated storytelling space in the children’s area.

Spruill Oaks renovations will include the creation of a dedicated senior area and restoration of the Spruill House monument.

At Ocee, the children’s area will be separated by a glass wall to reduce noise. The large circulation desk will be replaced by smaller pods so librarians will be less closed off from the patrons.

Both renovations will include reconfiguring the parking lots to improve flow, with directional arrows, stop bars, restriping and crosswalks.

There was a public input meeting for Northeast Spruill Oaks Library on Feb. 25 and for Ocee on Feb. 28.

Leadership Johns Creek fundraises for adaptive vehicle

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Leadership Johns Creek Class of 2019 is working to help people with injuries and disabilities drive safely.

Leadership Johns Creek is a program that fosters local leadership talent through workshops and a community service project.

This year’s class has partnered with Emory Johns Creek to purchase an adaptive vehicle to bring a training and assessment program to the city. With adequate funding, the project would help people with mild cognitive impairments, injuries and disabilities drive safely.

“There were several projects presented and ideas were tossed around,” said Kay Halbert, director of Rehabilitation Services at Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

“This project really inspired people, I think, because of the need.”

When public transportation is limited, the ability to drive is paramount to a person’s ability to work, live independently and stay connected to the community.

“They can take care of the basic activities of daily living,” Halbert said.

“But then they have a hard time reentering the community because that part was missing … If they’ve had a stroke, they’re often dependent on their friends or family members to go anywhere, to enjoy social life or even think about going back to work.”

Allison Tarpley, a Leadership Johns Creek participant, said the idea makes sense to her.

“I’ve really realized the importance of being independent and getting around,” she said. “Just getting to doctor’s appointment, drug store, grocery store, it’s life-changing.”

Realtor stresses choice in price points ZKTeco to bring as Forsyth County continues to grow $5 million, 40 jobs

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County has a lot working in its favor in the real estate industry, according to Frank Norton, noted real estate expert in north Georgia.

Norton spoke at the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce Commercial Real Estate Roundtable Feb. 28 at ServPro. He said the county’s demographics play a large role in the local housing market, and that leaders need to be aware of the importance of things such as affordable housing.

Norton said the estimated population of Forsyth County in 2018 was 227,967. He compared it to Johns Creek which has been an official city for more than a decade and had an estimated population in 2018 of 202,957.

“Your population growth is so strong, that it is eclipsing almost any other county in the state,” Norton said.

“A fairly sizeable wedge is coming out of Forsyth County and going to Johns Creek. Visualize what that will look like in 2040. In 2040, we are projecting Forsyth County to be somewhere in the 275,000-300,000 people.”

One challenge facing Forsyth is the lack of affordable housing for low income families and residents.

“The county has changed,” he said.

“We need housing. I have been preaching for 20 years that the key to a good, strong community is having multiple price points of housing. You have to have some low income, subsidized and

rental, some not subsidized and some luxury, and single-family residences.”

The average family, with average credit who want to buy the average house, will not live in Forsyth County, Norton said.

“You’re importing that labor to run the county,” he said. “That will get compounded more over the next five years than the last 20 years.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — ZKTeco, a global manufacturer of tag-tracking and biometric technology, will soon call Alpharetta home.

Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced Feb. 20 that the company is moving its U.S. headquarters from Fairfield, New Jersey to Fulton County. The move is expected to bring 40 new jobs and invest over $5 million in relocation and expansion.

The new jobs will consist of inside sales, technical support, research and development, light assembly, quality control and logistics personnel.

“I am pleased to welcome ZKTeco to Georgia,” Kemp said. “As global companies seek to expand in North America, they are finding that Georgia is an ideal location in terms of accessibility, costeffectiveness, access to skilled talent, and an excellent quality of life. I am confident that ZKTeco made the right decision to locate their U.S. headquarters in Alpharetta.”

The Alpharetta location will cover 5,000 square feet and will allow customers to physically interact with the technology.

Braves’ moneyball is actually making money Retain customers Unlike the Oakland A’s version of moneyball, the Atlanta Braves are actually making money. And judging from their recently released 2018 earnings, they are making a ton of it.

Geoff smith Mark Meltzer reAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com ported in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the Braves took in $442 million in revenue last year, up 14.5 percent from the $386 million they took in in 2017 — and up nearly 69 percent since their last season at Turner Field.

Liberty Media, the owner of the Braves, said the increase in revenues had largely to do with the Braves winning the National League East and earning some homefield playoff games.

That brought in revenue through more ticket-sales and increased profits from concessions.

But another profit source for the Braves has been the real estate it owns in the Battery. Due to increased occupancy rates in 2018, the team generated $38 million more in revenue from its real estate holdings.

While the 2018 numbers have not been released for all the other Major League Baseball teams, in 2017, the Braves ranked 8th in the league with its $336 million in revenue. The $442 million they made last year would have moved them up to 5th place on that list.

According to Forbes, the Braves are currently considered the 12th most valuable franchise in baseball at $1.625 billion. The Yankees top that list too, at $4 billion, followed by the Dodgers at $3 billion and the Cubs at $2.9 billion.

If you did not read Michael Lewis’ book “Moneyball,” it tells the story of how the A’s used an algorithm to hire players they determined would score runs. This resulted in them hiring and trading for less sought-after players, but winning more games. Coincidentally, the A’s ranked dead last in 2017 in revenue.

As fans, most of us are probably more concerned with what the Braves are doing to win another pennant and put the team in contention for the World Series. Well, if you base success off of payroll, the Braves current roster ranks 20th out of 30 teams in terms of money spent. Statistically speaking, they didn’t have any superstars last year. Freddie Freeman had the 7th highest batting average and Nick Markakis had the 6th most hits. As a team, they statistically were better than most, but not really in the front of the pack. They had the 5th highest batting average, but were 19th in home runs, 11th in on-base percentage, and perhaps the most important team hitting statistic, they were 10th in runs scored.

The pitchers did a little better. They had the 7th best earned run average, allowed the 3rd fewest home runs, and again, most importantly, allowed the 8th least amount of runs.

It’s hard to say that Liberty Media did a lot in the off-season to drastically improve the Braves. Although it does feel great to get Brian McCann. He always looked out of place in another team’s uniform. And they took a chance on 33-year old Josh Donaldson. He is a former American League MVP third basement, but has been plagued by injuries the last several years. It would have been nice to get a dominant pitcher, but the Braves are touting their young talent as potential gamechangers.

We have a team that will compete and we have a stadium and an atmosphere that makes going to a game an awesome experience. The Battery has grown so much and will continue to grow with an up and coming $200 million expansion. Getting to the game early and hitting the bars and restaurants is way more important than it was at Turner Field.

The only thing standing in the way of continued revenue growth could very well be the continuation of these record rainfalls. Otherwise, Let’s Go Braves!

Conveying a more realistic time (like 24 hours) not only sets the expectation with your customers that they can count on getting a call back in a day, it’s also achievable.

Over-promising and under-delivering leads to customer complaints, dissatisfaction, and potentially losing a customer. There are two easy solutions. Number 1, don’t make promises that you can’t deliver; and number 2, if your customer expects something you know you can’t deliver, manage their expectations.

You can spend a lot of time, effort and money trying to consistently meet the expectations your customers have.

Managing customer expectations will also improve customer satisfaction. Happy customers will do more business with you, and are also more likely to recommend your business to others; both of which will help you grow your small business.

Quartz or Granite. These are the absolute standards. Don’t consider anything but these options. Whether for style, aesthetics, function or durability; an updated kitchen must have granite or quartz. Stay away from complicated edges, like ogee, and keep is simple.

Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields gorgeous kitchens.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2018 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

The Total Kitchen. Bringing all of these elements together is what makes truly gorgeous kitchens and they don’t need to be ultra expensive; they just need to be well planned. The more time you spend on planning, the better the kitchen will turn out.

Choosing a shutter style Exterior Shutters can really make or break the exterior of your home and plays a vital role in the overall curb appeal.

One of the items to consider is the STYLE of shutter that will look good on your home and give that final touch to complete the picture.

Board and Batten Shutters A shutter typically composed of three to five vertical boards that are connected using two or three horizontal battens. These shutters inspire a country or cottage look and have grown in popularity in the last few years. The latest trend is to have multiple narrow boards to create a cleaner, more sophisticated look. This style lends itself to adding additional interest by adding diagonal pieces or even strap hinges.

Paneled Shutters This traditional style consists of panels within a frame.

This shutter style’s popularity during the last number of decades has firmly entrenched it as the “traditional look.” Especially with the panels you can select a number of styles based on your preference. We can start off with a Flat panel, giving a very smooth and minimalistic look. Or you can do the very traditional Raised panel, providing a more three-dimensional appearance. Our Shaker Raised panels gives you even more depth while keeping it very classic and stylish.

The Mission style panel is another option, where it is incorporating design elements from the Board and Batten style, but with a much more sophisticated look.

The size and placement of the panels will typically follow the window design, but lately we’ve seen a lot of deviation from the traditional to jazz it up a little bit. We can incorporate a small panel in the center, make them single panels, or even 3 equal panels, all depending on the look the home owner wants to create.

Louvered Shutters.

Louvered styled shutters are the original “classic standard,” found on period buildings such as Antebellum, Colonial, Williamsburg, Georgian and Federal styled houses. Louvered shutters create an additional architectural element to enhance the house’s façade. Louvered shutters can also be the right choice for Contemporary styled buildings wishing to create a more traditional appearance. For a slightly more modern look you can make the slats wider to give a cleaner, less busy appearance.

Emory Rehab Hospital in Atlanta has such an adaptive vehicle, but patients and rehab specialists must travel downtown for in-vehicle assessment and training. A new vehicle would make driving rehab more convenient for patients in Johns Creek and throughout the North Atlanta suburbs.

A new vehicle including all the needed equipment will cost about $41,500.

The fundraiser is already about halfway to its goal. The team hopes to purchase

the vehicle by the end of March and have it ready to go by May. “We have great leadership team that’s come together and we’re really passionate about this,” Tarpley said. “Every day funds keep rolling in. Businesses, friends, family, healthcare professionals, people are reaching out to assist us with this.”

Blessed Trinity swimmer finds stride in water

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — With more than 40 state team championship banners hanging in its gym, Blessed Trinity has proven to be one of Georgia’s top athletic programs over the past 20 years. But it was not until senior Dillon Downing stood atop the podium twice at the GHSA Swim and Dive State Championships Feb. 9 that the school captured its first boys swimming individual state title.

Downing raced his way to the title in 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle and set the fastest times of all classifications in both events. His time of 19.73 seconds in the 50-yard event was just 0.1 second behind the state record and was the 38th-quickest time nationally for high school swimmers, according to USA Swimming. Even more impressive, Downing has only been swimming full time for two years.

Downing swam during elementary school but said he did not enjoy it and quit. While running cross country with the Titans his freshman year, he decided to give swimming another try that winter.

“Dillon was a very good swimmer his freshman year, but in his sophomore year, he had some tremendous time drops and placed fourth at the state meet in the 50free and sixth in the 100-free,” BT swim coach Chuck Oliver said. “He beat many

swimmers who are training year round and were getting looks from colleges. To be swimming the times he was while only committed to swimming for a few months out of the year showed me how much upside potential he probably had.”

Oliver suggested a year-round regimen, and Downing took the dive, splitting his time with coach Andy Griffin at Swim Atlanta and Oliver with BT. “I was definitely weaker than I wanted to be going from cross-country, but the endurance aspect helped a lot,” Downing said. “I was able to put in laps and not feel so drained. And since, my start and turns have gotten much better.”

While his cross country days saw Downing competing over long distances, he was drawn to the sprint races of the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.

“I like how fast it is,” he said. “It focuses on strength. The other strokes require a lot of technique, and freestyle does as well, but it’s a lot of strength.”

The senior said he was surprised at how well he did at the 2019 state meet and was thankful for his coaches, Oliver and Griffin.

“They both said they love working with me and watching me progress,” Downing said. “Obviously the work they put in to help me get better paid off.”

Downing not only caught the eyes of his coaches and competitors, he impressed college recruiters. The new state champion accepted a scholarship offer from UGA where he will continue his swim and academic career.

Blessed Trinity senior Dillon Downing won state titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events at the Feb. 9 GHSA Swim and Dive State Championships. Downing began swimming full time just two years ago and is committed to the UGA swim program.

“Honestly, the whole process was a surprise for me since I only recently started to swim,” Downing said. “I didn’t expect to be recruited.”

Downing said he is excited for the opportunity to join the Bulldogs and believes he will be able to contribute to the sprint program as a freshman.

“I feel like UGA is getting a diamond in the rough as Dillon’s upside is just now beginning to scratch the surface,” Oliver said. “Dillon’s body is in great shape, and mentally he is hungry. I expect him to add strength in college as his body can handle it. I fully expect to see Dillon in the 2024 Olympics if not the 2020 Olympics.”

Downing has set high goals for himself at UGA, where he aims to set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle and earn a spot in the NCAA finals.

“I’m still fairly new, and I want to see how far I can go,” he said.

Community kicks off fundraiser for the Wall That Heals

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Leadership Johns Creek, the Chamber of Commerce and the local Veterans Association are teaming up to raise money for the arrival of the Wall that Heals.

A fundraising campaign kicks off March 8 at 10 a.m. at the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk in Newtown Park.

The Wall That Heals is a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans memorial in Washington. The chevron-shaped wall bears the names of 58,000 service members who died or were missing in action during the war.

Johns Creek hosted the wall in the spring of 2017, when more than 8,500 people visited. Last year, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund announced that Johns Creek will become the permanent home of the half-scale memorial.

The retired replica had been on the road for more than 10 years and toured more than 250 cities across America.

Johns Creek was chosen thanks to the support of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau and a donation from local residents and former City Councilwoman Cori and John Davenport.

The Wall That Heals will be installed at the Veterans Memorial Walk. The 4-acre walk features an entrance plaza, a gazebo, a ceremonial bell, a fountain and 10 black granite monuments, recognizing every U.S. conflict since World War I as well as women in service, Purple Heart recipients, prisoners of war and service members missing in action.

The Wall That Heals will be installed near the gazebo.

Community groups are raising money to fund the installation, lighting and landscaping around the wall. The City Council and convention bureau have already devoted $25,000 to this end.

The Veterans Memorial Walk is located in Newtown Park at 3150 Old Alabama Road.

Robert William Soré

Robert William Soré passed away February 25, 2019. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Soré and son Alister Soré.

He is preceded in death by his son Sinclair Soré.

Robert was born in Bronx, New York in 1957 to the late Ann and Edward Sore. Robert attended Manhattan College and earned a bachelor’s degree as a mechanical engineer. He worked as a product manager in marketing for Siemens and also had a long career with Mitsubishi Electric.

Robert was a consummate business man, he loved meeting new people, and traveling to different countries on business.

But more than that he was a wonderful, loving, nurturing family man. He enjoyed home improvement projects, new cars, model trains, and golfing with his son, Alister.

Robert is an accomplished golfer and was able to play the finest and most historic golf courses in the world. He and his wife, Cynthia, were married in 1990 on the 18th hole lawn of Pebble Beach. Robert and Cynthia raised The

Sensational Soré Twins, Alister and Sinclair, and lived in Long Grove, Illinois, Newtown, Connecticut and had relocated to Johns Creek, Georgia in 2013.

Robert leaves behind his brothers Edward, John and Gerard Sore and his sisters Linda Cebel and Marianne Fox, his step sisters, Fran Silverman and Marian Barth, his sister in law Carole Meehan, along with many other family members and treasured friends.

The family received friends on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 6:00 pm, and a memorial service followed at 7:00 pm in the McDonald and Son Funeral Home Chapel, in Cumming, Georgia.

In addition to flowers the family is accepting donations, in honor of Robert, to the Wounded Warrior Project.
