Amethyst ring missing from senior community

Wrong-way driver cited for multiple violations

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an incident in which a $300 ring was reported missing from Ivy Hall Senior Living.

A resident said she wore the ring and a pair of earrings out on April 8. When she returned, she took off the jewelry and latched them together, as she always does, and put them on a table.

She did not go out again April 11, after which time she noticed the earrings were clasped together but the ring was missing.

Employees of Ivy Hall searched the room and did not find the ring. The victim did not know of any unusual visitors during that time, but admitted she was asleep most of the time due to illness. She also said she kept her door unlocked.

The ring is 24-karat yellow gold, size 6, with a solitaire, pear-cut amethyst with a diamond chip affixed to the tip with no inscriptions or other identifying marks.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police were notified at 3:30 a.m. April 20 of a white truck driving on the wrong side of the road and making an illegal U-turn on Old Alabama Road.

An officer responded to the area and observed a white truck traveling west near Autrey Mill Nature Preserve. The Chevrolet had an expired tag and an outstanding warrant for the registered owner of the vehicle.

The officer observed the driver almost collide with another car while making a left turn onto Jones Bridge Road. The officer made a traffic stop.

The driver, identified as Ty Rosales, 29, Cumming, said he was heading home to Cumming, although he was headed south on Jones Bridge. Rosales said he had consumed two beers and consented to field sobriety evaluations.

The officer observed the smell of alcohol and signs of impairment. Rosales was charged with failure to maintain lane, expired tag and driving under the influence.

An officer was patrolling near Medlock Bridge Road and Wilson Road and observed a silver Honda Accord pass with only one working headline.

Following the car, the officer also observed the Honda fail to maintain its lane, and the officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver complied but nearly hit another motorist while stopping, the officer said.

The officer identified the driver as Feven Nebil, 24, Atlanta. Nebil admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages. The office observed the smell of alcohol and other indicators of possible intoxication.

Woman cited for theft from greeting card store ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a woman on April 15 after she was caught allegedly stealing $1,200 worth of greeting cards, jewelry and clothes from the Hallmark on North Point Parkway.

The woman entered the store at 6:30 p.m. and was seen taking merchandise and placing it in her purse and pants pockets. At one point, she was also seen taking a gift bag and filling it with several items. She left without paying.

Employees called police.

While the woman was walking through the parking lot, she spotted police and returned to the store. Police found her in possession of 71 missing items.

The woman, later identified as 52-year-old Angela Adams of Alpharetta, was arrested for felony shoplifting.

Council signs off on funding for gateway markers

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — After months of deliberation, the Johns Creek City Council finalized its plan for 2019 tourism product development.

In a 4-3 vote at its April 22 meeting, the council nixed plans for a Chattahoochee Greenway study and agreed to the Convention and Visitor Bureau board’s recommendation for gateway markers.

State law requires about 40 percent of funds collected from local hotel taxes go to tourism product development.

Since the beginning of the processes in November, the CVB’s primary recommendation has been gateway markers — two artistic monuments at the entrance to the city on State Bridge Road at the Chattahoochee River and at Kimball Bridge Road — based on advice received

from an outside consultant in 2018.

The CVB board proposed partnering with Urban Catalyst Lab, a nonprofit they worked with on the Johns Creek Tunnel, to gather community feedback and develop designs for gateway markers.

Some council members expressed apprehension about the gateway markers proposal, and in January, the convention bureau made an alternative suggestion to use funds to study the possibility of a Chattahoochee Greenway between Abbotts Bridge and McGinnis Ferry.

At its Feb. 11 meeting, the council reached consensus on allocating $74,000 for the greenway project and leaving the remaining $40,000 unallocated until questions were answered about the design process for the gateway markers.

However, April 22 the city revoked

funding for the Chattahoochee Greenway study and split the remaining funds between gateway markers and the Wall That Heals, a Vietnam memorial being erected in the Johns Creek Veteran’s Memorial Walk.

Councilman Lenny Zaprowski made the motion for $50,000, in addition to the $25,000 already allocated, to go to the Wall that Heals, and for the remaining funds, projected to be around $64,000, to go to gateway markers.

“It’s not that I’m not for the Greenway plan,” Zaprowski said. I am 100 percent for the Greenway plan, but I’m not for throwing $74,000 at another study. I’m sick of studies.”

Councilman Jay Lin agreed.

“Being someone from the construction world, cost-effectiveness and timely, tangible delivery, those are music in my ears,” he said.

Council members John Bradberry,

Chris Coughlin and Stephanie Endres voted against the motion, saying. they would rather see the money go to something that could benefit residents as well as tourists, like parks improvements.

Endres also said she could not support revoking money they had already assigned.

“I think the Greenway has many strategic covaries with our other goals, whether it be iHeartJC, intercity mobility or just increasing the health of our citizens,” Coughlin said. “I tried to be a good partner with the CVB, alas though I cannot come to support the gateway markers given the consensus support of the Greenway.”

In zoning matters, the council approved a rezoning petition to build a RaceTrac convenience store and gas station on State Bridge Road.

The vote was 6-1 with Endres opposed.

City seeks input on Medlock Bridge Road

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The city held a public input meeting April 23 to hear residents’ opinions on the interim intersection improvement project at Medlock Bridge Road and State Bridge Road.

Medlock, or Ga. 141, and State Bridge is the busiest intersection in Johns Creek, seeing 100,000 cars a day.

Making improvements to the intersection is one of the highest priority projects to be funded by the transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST. The Public Works Department has studied five potential long-term improvements for the intersection, and it remains to be decided which route the City Council wants to take.

“We are working through a number of long-term solutions – a 20-year solution,” Public Works Director Lynette Baker said. “Council has decided I take a proactive manner to do something in the interim. We

don’t want to do anything we’ll have to rip out to build the long-term solution.”

The interim or phase one project is to expand Medlock Bridge to six lanes north of the intersection, and to expand State Bridge to six lanes west to Johns Creek High School. The roads are already three lanes to the east and south.

For State Bridge Road, the plan is to add additional pavement from the inside of the road. For Medlock Bridge, the city is seeking input to decide whether to add new paving or to take a restriping approach.

The first alternative under consideration is having Medlock taper from three northbound lanes to two just north of the intersection. The third lane would become a striped off “gore” before the right turn lane turns into St Ives.

The second option is to have the rightmost northbound lane become a right turn only lane at the intersection with Grove Point Road and St Ives Country Club Parkway. Neither of these options require additional paving.

the Grove Point and St Ives intersection before tapering to two lanes just north of the neighborhood entrances.

Additional pavement would be needed to construct a turn lane into St Ives.

There was no overwhelming consensus from residents at the meeting. Attendees raised questions about Forsyth commuters and potential induced demand.

Today, Medlock Bridge Road is six lanes south of the intersection and State Bridge Road is six lanes to the east. North Medlock Bridge could be restriped to be six lanes, while West State Bridge would need additional paving.

In the long term, Public Works staff is encouraging the city to take an approach that would eliminate left turns at the Medlock and State Bridge intersection in order to have fewer traffic cycles and faster travel times.

The five alternatives presented to the city council in December are grade separation, Thru-U, continuous flow intersections, quadrants and a combination of the other solutions.

Grade separation would essentially be a bridge that would allow traffic on Medlock Bridge to pass over State Bridge Road, similar to Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

In a Thru-U design, also known as Median U-Turns or Michigan Lefts, travelers turning left move straight through the main intersection, make a U-turn at a smaller light and then take a right back at the main intersection.

In Continuous Flow Intersections, left-turning traffic crosses opposing traffic at a light before the intersection. At the main intersection, through traffic moves in center lanes while left-turning traffic moves in outside lanes, allowing cars going straight and turning left in both directions to move at the same time.

A quadrant design would redirect turning traffic onto Medlock Crossing Parkway and a new side road.

Panel addresses mental health issues, opioid crisis

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Mental health and substance abuse are growing concerns in North Fulton, but local nonprofits are taking on the issue.

United Way of Greater Atlanta, in collaboration with the North Fulton Mental Health Collaborative, held a summit on child wellbeing April 25 to address the issues.

The event brought together leaders from nonprofits, government, schools, faith groups, and physical and mental health groups to talk about addressing mental health and substance abuse in North Fulton County.

A recurring theme of the event was that mental illness and substance abuse are prevalent in North Fulton despite the area’s affluence.

“People look at North Fulton and say things must be great,” said Scott Ashur, United Way North Fulton Advisory Board chair. “It’s an affluent community. You don’t have homelessness, they say. But that’s from the outside looking in. I think all of us living here know there are problems.”

United Way of Greater Atlanta COO Timothy Pakenham agreed.

“Across the footprint there are mental health and substance abuse issues that does not discriminate on income level, does not discriminate on race and does not discriminate on place.”

The event began with speakers from United Way of Greater Atlanta who spoke about their efforts to improve child well being across the region. Next, other speakers from the community’s behavioral health leadership spoke about their efforts.

Speakers emphasized the growing rates of mental health problems among teens and children.

“We’re seeing [thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts] across the board in all our kids, but especially concerning is how it’s creeping down into our middle school and even elementary school students,” said Cathy Murphy, director of community relations for The Summit Counseling Center.

Then, a panel brought together Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis, Roswell Municipal Judge Brian Hansford, Fulton County Board of Education Member Katha Stuart, Path Light Georgia Founder Britt Parramore and Avanos Senior Vice President of Global Quality Mizanu Kebede.

Bob Ellis Fulton County Commissioner The panel talked about how lawmakers, courts, schools, faith organizations and medical providers can work together to address issues surrounding mental health.

“The thing about mental health is it’s such a wide issue,” Ellis said. “You’ve got teens, adults, vets. It spans all income groups. No one group is going to solve the problem, so it truly does take a collaborative effort, and a coordinated effort. Events like these help foster that collaboration.”

Events like this also help destigmatize mental illness, Ellis said, by showing

there are people who care and that there are resources to help those who are struggling.

For his part, Ellis pointed to the county’s efforts at training for law enforcement, drug take-back events, and lawsuits against pharmaceutical distributers who excessively pushed opioids.

Hansford spoke positively about courts moving from criminalization and to a treatment-focused approach for nonviolent drug offenders, but he said there was need for more coordination between small municipal courts and large county courts with more resources, to get at-risk individuals immediate help and reduce recidivism.

He also had advice for parents.

“I know we all want out kid to hit the home run and get the straight A’s and get the full ride to college, but that just isn’t realistic for every kid,” Hansford said. “It’s important we’re not putting that pressure on them because that’s what drives them to substance abuse and other problems.”

Understanding stormwater in Johns Creek In response to pressure from citizens, Johns Creek has launched a thorough assessment of the city’s stormwater system, but the City Council still faces a decision on how to tackle stormwater infrastructure on private property.

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — On a stormy day, rain coats the pavement like a second layer. On the sides of roads and in backyards, ditches become like streams.

In some areas, water rushes to the nearest storm drain; in others it stills, forming deeper and deeper puddles as the rain continues to fall.

We care about stormwater when we step in a puddle or when we’re worried about our car hydroplaning, but when the sun is shining, it usually isn’t on our minds.

That is unless you have attended a Johns Creek City Council meeting in the last year, where stormwater has become a regular topic of conversation.

A year of heavy rainfall, following a decade of rapid development, has exacerbated stormwater-related problems in the city.

When rain lands in a natural environment, it can percolate into the ground or gradually make its way to a large body of water.

But, when rain hits impervious surface, like roadways or roofs, the runoff travels at faster speeds, causing erosion and sometimes flooding, and mixes with toxins and litter, polluting rivers and lakes.

Stormwater infrastructure like catch basins, gutters, pipes, ditches and detention ponds can help control the impact of stormwater. But in Johns Creek, roughly 80 percent of the city’s stormwater management systems were built prior to implementation of today’s best management practices.

While commercial and residential development has rapidly increased the amount of impervious surface in the city, improvements to stormwater infrastructure has not kept pace.

“We are about 93 percent built out, and we built out over a very short period of about two and a half decades,” then Community Development Director Sharron Ebert said during an October work session.

“Along Medlock Bridge Road, there is a very high concentration of [impervious surface] because that’s where we have most of our commercial properties, both in shopping centers and office complexes,” Ebert said. “Our parking lots in particular for those two types of development are what is impacting to the most

Some residents of Johns Creek, especially along the Medlock Bridge corridor, are seeing the impact of this in their backyards.

Trees have fallen down because the soil around the roots has washed away.

Ditches have deepened and widened.

Yards flood during a heavy rain.

“I don’t think the city really cares or realizes that it’s their overall development policy and the fact that we don’t have any mitigation to keep stormwater from just rushing into the streams that has caused this,” said Larry Fitch, a 20-year resident of Medlock Bridge subdivision. “Because it certainly didn’t do it before there was development, even when there were heavy downfalls.”

Neighborhood homeowners’ associa-

tions also have to contend with the costs of maintaining their stormwater infrastructure. Medlock Bridge’s HOA, for example, is spending around $500,000 this year to remove silt from its detention pond.

This can especially present a challenge for neighborhoods where the HOA is managed by volunteers, as Creekside Crossing HOA President Grady Barnhill told the City Council during the public comment section of an April council meeting.

“When the stormwater comes surging through our streams, and goes flowing outside banks, when it’s disintegrating various devices and causing trees to fall over, that stormwater is not very much aware of whether it’s on city-owned property or private property,” Barnhill said.

“Year of Stormwater” Recognizing the growing public concern surrounding stormwater, the council adopted a 2019 budget that made stormwater a priority, a move Mayor Mike Bodker deemed the “Year of Stormwater.”

This commitment included adding a new position to city staff specifically to oversee stormwater, funding an assessment of the entire stormwater system and adding funds to the infrastructure maintenance accrual fund to begin repairs.

“Rather than just doing the cursory minimum, council decided that they wanted to have a real understanding of the condition and the maintenance needs of the stormwater system,” Interim Community Development Director Kimberly Greer said.

Ebert announced her retirement from the city in March. Assistant City Manager Greer is now overseeing the department, which is responsible for land development and stormwater management, until a permanent replacement is found.

The minimum level of inspection required by law, and the approach the city has historically used, is to inspect the parts of the structures and conveyances that can be seen from above ground, Greer said.

All of the public infrastructure must be inspected once every five years, as well as some privately owned stormwater infrastructure that has an easement with a city. That’s a small percentage of the overall stormwater system.

The assessment funded with the 2019 budget uses crawler cameras to get inside the pipe and inspect the entire system from the inside.

“We’re going to find more because you’re literally crawling through pipes now,” Greer said. “You’re getting into the nitty gritty, under the ground, the stuff we can’t see that may not have always been top of mind but is now.”

Contractors have already completed assessment of one of the six stormwater basin zones. The six zones are Caney Creek, Cauley Creek, Crooked Creek, Johns Creek, Level Creek and Long Indian Creek.

Long Indian Creek, the western side of the city, was the first to be assessed because of the relative age of its infrastructure.

Out of around 1,200 pieces of cityowned stormwater infrastructure, two structures and two conveyances were deemed heavily damaged. On private property, 10 structures and five conveyances were deemed heavily damaged.

In April, the City Council committed $650,000 to repairing the most damaged city-owned structures and clearing the areas with the most siltation. The council members voted to spend the money now rather than waiting to complete the system-wide inspection, calling it an act of “triage.”

“This will be the first-time major expenditures are spent on repair, so clearly there’s some catch up,” Bodker said.

In the long-term, the city wants to take a more proactive approach to maintain stormwater infrastructure, to develop a program similar to how it approaches neighborhood repaving.

With repaving, the city hired a consultant to analyze and score all the roads in Johns Creek based on crack-

ing, potholes and weathering. The roads were ranked by need, and repaving was scheduled over a four year cycle.

“Longer term, I want to get to every year we vacuum out a certain percentage of our pipes in a systematic way, so that we don’t get to the fully clogged pipe,” Greer said. “But that’s a process that needs to be informed with data, which makes that system assessment the vital first step.”

Extent of service Tied into conversations surrounding stormwater is a debate over extent of service. Johns Creek’s current policy, which has been in place since 2007, is that the city is only responsible for stormwater infrastructure in the public right of way or on other public property, like parks.

The city does have the right to access some of the privately owned storm water facilities for inspection and enforcement, but maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner.

Historically, Johns Creeks enforcement of stormwater ordinances on private property has been largely reactive, Greer said. The city responds when citizens call in a complaint, or if public works or community development workers notice an issue.

Of the 16,000 stormwater structures in the city, about 5,850 are city-owned.

Even if the city could repair all its stormwater overnight, it would only be a fraction of the maintenance needed.

Some residents are calling on the council to do more to help neighborhood HOAs and private property owners maintain their detention ponds, but that presents legal and financial challenges.

Proponents of expanding the service argue that the entire system is connected. Stormwater runoff doesn’t stop when it reaches a property line, something the city has acknowledged.

“It is one system,” Greer said at a recent council meeting. “The public parts impact the private parts and vice versa … If there is a blockage right before us, it impacts us. If the blockage is us, it is impacting what is downstream. The two play together.”

However, if the city were to step in now and subsidize an HOA cleaning a detention pond, it would present a legal liability under the gratuities clause of the Georgia Constitution, according to environmental attorney Darren Meadows.

The gratuities clause states that “the General Assembly shall not have the power to grant any donation or gratuity.”

Through legal precedence, this has been interpreted to include any municipality or county in Georgia giving any sort of gift where there is no substantial benefit to the public.

“Is the primary benefit to relieve the burden on that private enterprise, that private community, that private area or is it a benefit to the city as a whole?” Meadows said. “By and large, most of the ones that I encounter it’s ‘Please save us, the private land owners, from our own lack of budgeting and lack of maintenance.’”

“The taxes are being used to maintain the city system or the county system,” Meadows continued. “To use the tax money to maintain what’s within that private property is what brings up that gratuities question.”

Meadows said if a detention pond or other stormwater infrastructure was poorly maintained to the point it was flooding a road or park, that could be overwhelming enough public interest for the city to step in, but even then, the

city should seek compensation after the emergency has been addressed.

“If you want the city to be involved in resolving this issue then … pulling [the money] from current budgetary resources certainly raises the gratuities issue, because you have to be redirecting funds that would be going to some other presumably public benefit, ie. building another park, improving roads,” Meadows said.

Funding repairs For the city-owned infrastructure in Long Indian Creek basin alone, the cost to repair the mostly heavily damaged infrastructure and clear the conveyances with the most siltation is estimated to be $650,000.

The price only includes one of the city’s six basin zones and does not begin to address infrastructure with medium levels of damage.

Though city staff will not make official estimates until additional basin zones have been studied, the city is likely looking at a six- or even sevendigit number to repair all the damaged city-owned infrastructure.

Before the city considers expanding its extent of service, it must understand how to pay for repairs and maintenance.

City staff floated three ideas of what that might look like in a work session last October. The city could continue to fund repairs the way it has in the past, through the annual budget process.

It could issue general obligation bond, like it has for parks and traffic improvements. This approach is usually taken when a municipality needs to make major capital improvements in a relatively short amount of time. A bond would allow the city to expedite major repairs and pay them off over time.

The third option would be to create a stormwater utility fee, also known as a “rain tax,” a new tax that would generate revenue specifically for stormwater infrastructure maintenance. Property owners would be charged based on the type of property (commercial or residential), area covered by impervious surface and whether they implement certain stormwater management practices.

Roswell, Duluth and Norcross have some version of a stormwater utility fee.

“The rain tax is the direction that most local governments seem to be going,” Meadows said. “Their tax money coming in, they’ve got plenty of things to spend it on, whether it’s road improvements or other types of infrastructure.”

Ballet, orchestra team up to produce ‘Vivaldi in the Park’

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The North Atlanta Dance Theatre is teaming up with the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra to present a unique outdoor concert May 4 in Newtown Park.

The performance will feature the entirety of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” The four 10-minute movements all feature original choreography by Michael Garrison, the studio’s co-founder.

“These dancers have had to learn a large volume of choreography in a short time, to their credit they’re doing a beautiful job,” said Kitty Garrison, Michael’s wife, the other founder of the studio and the costume designer for the show.

The nearly 20 dancers in the show could not begin working on “Vivaldi” until after the studio recital in March.

Throw in prom, spring break and exams, and the producers knew they had a tight schedule.

“The biggest challenge is just trying to do things quickly but not jumping to the first thing you think of,” Michael said. “It’s finding the time for developing it, cleaning it.”

Still, the Garrisons were excited to take on Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” music many people find recognizable and accessible.

“Vivaldi is a favorite of a lot of people,” Michael said. “Lots of choreographers like to work with Vivaldi because of the structure and the texture of his music.”

In addition to Vivaldi, the show will also include Aram Khachaturian’s “Masquerade Walz,” which will feature elaborate, ballroom inspired costumes.

A professional dancer, Marillo Barbosa, and a student, Kai Shlomi, will present Astor Piazzolla’s “Oblivion,” a somber duet.

Erin Burt, a former student with North Atlanta Dance who now performs with the Sarasota Ballet, will present the ballet classic “The Dying Swan” to the piece titled “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saens.

“I always say bring the tissues for this one,” Kitty said.

Burt’s solo will keep the original choreography of the piece first performed in 1905 by Russian prima ballerina. Anna Pavlova.

Michael worked with Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra Maestro Wayne Baughman to select the music.

The idea for the collaborative concert originated with the company’s development director Stephanie Magaldi as a way to celebrate the ballet company’s 20th anniversary.

“It makes you wonder where the time goes,” Michael said. “We come to work, we look around and we pinch ourselves because we can’t believe we’ve made it to this level.”

The Garrisons said they hope the collaboration between the performing arts groups will make a statement about the strength and potential of arts in Johns Creek.

“I hope that the city of Johns Creek will embrace that and realize we’re just one of many things the city has to offer,” Kitty said.

In addition to the symphony and ballet, the Johns Creek Arts Center joined the collaboration by providing 250 handmade book markers for attendees. The bookmarks will be a mandala pattern for coloring to be given away along with a small box of crayons.

The concert will by May 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheatre in Newtown Park, at 3150 Old Alabama Road.

Free symphony concert to feature native soprano JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Ludwig Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra will present “A Spring Fling” on Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Johns Creek United Methodist Church.

The orchestra will be made up of 42 adult musicians with 30 of the best and brightest student musicians in the area.

The Ludwig Symphony Orchestra has been performing in north Atlanta for 20 years, with prize winners from around the world featured on a regular basis. The Beethoven Chamber Orchestra has been in existence for the past 15 years.

The May concert will be led by Maestro Ludwig, former music director of the New York City Symphony and resident conductor for American Ballet Theatre with Mikhail Baryshnikov at the Metropolitan Opera House.

‘Noises Off’ to play at Johns Creek High School

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek High School actors will give audiences a taste of the drama that goes on behind the scenes with their production of the farcical play “Noises Off” running May 9 through 11.

Each of the three acts of “Noises Off” contains a performance of a play within the play. Act I shows the hopelessly unprepared cast during the last rehearsal before opening night.

In Act II, the set spins around, so the audience sees what happens backstage during a performance. Act III concludes at a performance a few weeks later, as the relationships among the cast members deteriorates and the show is – sometimes literally – falling part.

“It’s every actor’s worst nightmare,” said senior Lexi Jones, who plays Brooke, a ditzy and inexperienced actress.

“It’s very fun play to do because I’m playing two characters and they’re very different … but it’s very challenging to learn the same lines with different blocking each time,” Jones said.

The show relies heavily on clever

blocking and sharp comedic timing, a challenge for any actor. The small group of Johns Creek students are pulling it off in the limited amount of time between the spring musical and the end of the school year.

Theatre director Debbie Prost said she has wanted to direct “Noises Off” since she stage-managed the show in college. For 15 years, she has been waiting for the right cast to pull it off.

“It’s an incredibly hard acting show, but this year I felt like I had the cast to do it,” Prost said.

Unlike the characters they’re playing, the cast of “Noises Off” is loving putting on the show.

“It’s definitely one for the books,” said senior Donald Mitchell who plays the stuttering and scatterbrained Garry. “This is my first full play since I’ve been here, and it’s great. I can’t wait to see what happens.”

Mitchel and Jones said audiences will love the show for its fast-paced fun.

“Come in and expect the unexpected,” Jones said. “It’s hilarious to watch.”

Shows will be May 9, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. with a matinee May 11 at 1 p.m.

River Trail Middle School to stage ‘Legally Blonde’

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Middle schoolers at River Trail Middle School will present “Legally Blonde The Musical Jr.” on April 30, May 3 and May 4.

Based on the popular film, “Legally Blonde” follows Valley girl Elle Woods who, after being dumped by her college boyfriend, follows him to Harvard Law. The colorful story of self-empowerment features large dance numbers and plenty of laughs.

River Trail’s production includes about 45 students in the cast and crew, with help from Northview High School students on set design and choreography.

The cast stars Sanjh Mahatme as Elle, Ben Smith as Warner, Ella Schuman as Vivienne, Jacob Ferrero as Emmet, Andrew Amelchenko as Callahan, Trina Thomas as Paulette and Alisa Adkins and Brooke. “[I love] being a part of ‘Legally Blonde’ because it gives me a chance to be me, sing my heart out and have fun,” sixth-grade cast member Eowynn Boyd said.

Governor speaks to Greater North Fulton Chamber

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp recounted the accomplishments of the 2019 legislative session to a packed house April 26 at the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Kemp largely focused on nonpartisan issues like raising the budget for teacher pay and school security, hurricane relief and fighting sex trafficking and gang violence.

However, he did mention two of the more controversial pieces of legislation passed during his first legislative session: Medicaid waivers and abortion restrictions.

“I signed, quite a while ago now, the Patients First Act, to craft a Georgia-centric healthcare system that will help lower insurance premiums, expand access to care and improve health outcomes for our families,” he said. “We passed the LIFE act to protect the innocent and the unborn.”

Given the audience, Kemp focused on the strength of the economy and importance of business development to the state.

“I want to thank you all for your strong support and being part of the Georgia economy and for what you do putting your efforts into your small business or the companies you’re working for,” Kemp said. “In my eyes, the folks that are members of the Chamber of Commerce and are involved in the operations and support of local chambers, that is literally where the rubber meets the road.”

Kemp said he will continue to focus on business development and take on adoption and foster care reform.

“As you can tell, we’ve accomplished a lot in our first 100 days of my term,” Kemp said. “I want you to know we are not resting on our laurels and we are

just getting started.”

After his speech, Kemp was fed questions. Asked about President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the state to attend a conference on the opioid crisis, Kemp commended the president for his work at the federal level and highlighted work being done by the state.

Asked about Amazon, Kemp said the state would not be chasing “HQ2,” or a new headquarters, but that he was confident Amazon will continue to grow its regional offices in Georgia.

On the subject of east-west connec-

tivity in North Fulton, Kemp said he was open to innovative, market-based solutions to transit.

“We have a great problem and a bad problem in the metro area with traffic,” Kemp said. “We’re growing so fast it’s hard to outbuild that growth when you look at road and bridge problems, so we’ve got to start thinking outside the box.”

Back then, there was a push from high-level officials in the North Fulton area to extend MARTA rail up to Windward Parkway. They even had a funding mechanism in place for the more than $5 billion project. The problem was that when it was brought up, the only people that rallied were those who opposed it. And I can tell you as someone who once covered local politics as a reporter, and as a casual observer over the last 20 years, the only time people tend to rally is when they are opposed to something. You never really see folks rally for something these days. I guess it’s easier to say no to something in

exchange for some magical solution than it is to stand up for something.

Four or five years ago, we had a way to extend rail and vocal voters, and then their elected officials said no.

I’m not exactly sure that this is the way this express lane idea went down, but from what it looks like, it seems that bus rapid transit is the “next best thing” to the rail-expansion idea.

The plan calls for two express lanes to be built in each direction between the North Springs MARTA station and McGinnis Ferry Road. Then for one express lane in each direction north from there to McFarland Parkway. The lanes would run mostly between the current north/south lanes with bus rapid transit stops at North Springs MARTA, Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, Old Milton Parkway and Windward Parkway.

I had State Sen. Brandon Beach on my radio podcast last week. He has chaired the Senate’s Transportation Committee for the last couple of years and was excited about bus rapid transit.

“This is going to be high-end. The buses will be nice – they’ll have wifi and it will be a very nice experience for the rider,” he said.

The benefit of bus rapid transit is that there isn’t as much of an up-front cost to get it running as there is with heavy rail. So if you cannot have heavy rail, it’s the next best thing.

Most people who I’ve talked to who have seen these plans, or heard about it, are thrilled that something is happening. But there are some vocal people who still want heavy rail and have no interest in seeing any more asphalt laid down. The problem is that it took years for discussion to finally brew up in North Fulton to the point where anyone with any significance would talk openly about

Choosing a shutter style Exterior Shutters can really make or break the exterior of your home and plays a vital role in the overall curb appeal.

One of the items to consider is the STYLE of shutter that will look good on your home and give that final touch to complete the picture.

Board and Batten Shutters A shutter typically composed of three to five vertical boards that are connected using two or three horizontal battens. These shutters inspire a country or cottage look and have grown in popularity in the last few years. The latest trend is to have multiple narrow boards to create a cleaner, more sophisticated look. This style lends itself to adding additional interest by adding diagonal pieces or even strap hinges.

Paneled Shutters This traditional style consists of panels within a frame.

This shutter style’s popularity during the last number of decades has firmly entrenched it as the “traditional look.” Especially with the panels you can select a number of styles based on your preference. We can start off with a Flat panel, giving a very smooth and minimalistic look. Or you can do the very traditional Raised panel, providing a more three-dimensional appearance. Our Shaker Raised panels gives you even more depth while keeping it very classic and stylish.

The Mission style panel is another option, where it is incorporating design elements from the Board and Batten style, but with a much more sophisticated look.

The size and placement of the panels will typically follow the window design, but lately we’ve seen a lot of deviation from the traditional to jazz it up a little bit. We can incorporate a small panel in the center, make them single panels, or even 3 equal panels, all depending on the look the home owner wants to create.

Louvered Shutters.

Louvered styled shutters are the original “classic standard,” found on period buildings such as Antebellum, Colonial, Williamsburg, Georgian and Federal styled houses. Louvered shutters create an additional architectural element to enhance the house’s façade. Louvered shutters can also be the right choice for Contemporary styled buildings wishing to create a more traditional appearance. For a slightly more modern look you can make the slats wider to give a cleaner, less busy appearance.

• Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth.

While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return.

NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The GHSA state baseball playoffs began April 24 with 11 local teams competing in the postseason.

Milton sweeps Rockdale Co. (11-1, 13-1) Milton advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a dominant sweep of Rockdale County April 24. The Eagles racked up 24 runs in the doubleheader while holding Rockdale to just five hits.

Milton’s bats were hot early with the Eagles driving in six runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1. The Eagles plated five more in the fourth inning and won the run-rule shortened game in five innings.

The Eagles offensive success continued in Game 2 with 15 hits and 13 runs.

Kristian Campbell and Curt McDonnell homered in Game 1, and Jack Rhodes hit a two-run shot in Game 2.

Josh Carrico had four total RBIs, Mitch Landon batted 3-5 with two RBIs and two walks, and Stephen Michaels was 3-6 with three RBIs in the series.

Dylan Matela threw a five-inning complete Game 1, allowing two hits and one earned run with 10 strikeouts. Tyler McLoughlin earned the win in Game 2, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and two walks.

Milton will host the winner of Norcross/Mill Creek in the second round slated to begin May 2.

Forsyth Central sweeps South Gwinnett (15-0, 8-1) Forsyth Central had no troubles dispatching South Gwinnett to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning of Game 1 and piled on the offense with 11 combined runs in the third and fourth. The game was called on the

run rule after the bottom of the fourth.

Central’s Game 1 offense was highlighted by a Jacob Ryan grand slam in the third inning. Ryan batted in seven runs in the opening game. He also got the start on the mound and pitched a four-inning complete game allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

Though Game 2 was more competitive, the Bulldogs still racked up eight runs while surrendering just three hits to take the series with an 8-1 win.

Mitchell Gross earned the Game 2 win, allowing two hits and no runs in six innings with 12 strikeouts. Will Robbins relieved Gross in the seventh, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in Game 2 with a five-run fourth inning behind five hits, including a three-run double from AJ Fiechter. With Gross dominating on the mound, Central added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth. South Gwinnett’s only run came on a home run in the seventh.

Central will go on the road in the second round to face Region 6 champions North Gwinnett.

North Forsyth sweeps Archer (4-1, 2-1) North Forsyth earned two extra-inning wins to sweep Archer April 24.

North’s Anthony DiMola won a pitcher’s battle in Game 1 with an impressive 10-inning performance allowing seven hits and one earned run.

The contest remained scoreless until the 10th inning when Miles Hartsfield hit a two-run double. Garrett Staton and BT upped its run total in Game 2 with 16 runs on 14 hits.

Abrams led the Titans, batting 3-3, including two doubles and a triple, with three RBIs and a walk. Chambers went 2-2 with an RBI, Ryan Davis batted 2-3

A late-game surge of runs made for an exciting Game 1 with Denmark plating four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and the game, 8-5.

Denmark took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but Northwest Whitfield tied in the bottom half with three hits, including an RBI single. Denmark responded with a five-hit rally in the seventh with Carson Russel hitting a two-out, two-run double.

Trevor Bryk and Nic Ferrer then stretched the lead to 8-4 with RBI singles.

Jack Kream relieved starter Dalton Hansard in the bottom the frame and got off to an inauspicious start with Northwest Whitfield’s leadoff batter hit-

ting a home run. However, Kream had a strikeout and forced two groundouts to end the potential comeback.

Hansard earned the Game 1 win, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.

While the first game of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth affair, Denmark took an early lead in Game 2 and racked up 12 hits to take the 11-2 win.

Matthew Cassandra batted 3-4 in Game 2 with two RBIs, a home run and a double, and Logan DeLong went 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Danes’ offense.

Starting pitcher Jack Whitlock earned the win, allowing three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

St. Francis sweeps Eagles Landing Christian Academy (9-0, 16-1) St. Francis made quick work of Eagles Landing Christian with a twogame sweep April 25 at home.

Knights’ starting pitcher Will Clark threw a perfect game in the run-rule shortened Game 1. Clark struck out five batters in five innings.

With Clark holding ELCA batters at bay, the Knights’ bats went to work.

Pinecrest Academy and First Presbyterian Day split doubleheader Pinecrest Academy and First Presbyterian Day split their April 25 doubleheader to force a decisive Game 3 on April 26.

FPD managed 10 hits in Game 1 but were held to four runs by Pinecrest’s Patrick O’Rourke who pitched a complete game.

The Paladins took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Jay Sorohan and added two more runs in the seventh with an O’Rourke RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Mason Carter.

Trailing 6-3, FPD had three hits in the bottom of the seventh with a run batted in, but a double play by Pinecrest ended the comeback threat.

After taking Game 1, Pinecrest and FPD put on an offensive showcase, combining for 29 runs and 27 hits. However, the Paladins came up short in the highscoring affair, 17-12.

FPD plated eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 14-4 lead.

Though the Paladins scored eight runs in the fifth through seventh inning, FPD’s lead proved insurmountable and forced a do-or-die Game 3.

Big South Beer Festival back for year two

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Beer lovers rejoice. The Big South Beer Festival and Competition returns May 11 at City Hall Plaza for another round of brews, food and live music. Big South, which runs from 4-8 p.m., will feature selections from over 30 breweries for attendees to sample with professional judges ranking brews in different categories and naming one brewery as Grand Champion.

The good time also benefits Children’s Charities, with all sponsorship proceeds to be donated to the nonprofit raising funds for an all-inclusive playground in Milton.

Event organizer Chuck Squires said he hopes this year’s event will be an even bigger success than the inaugural festival last spring.

“I think the first year was a great event, and I feel the attendees had a great experience,” Squires said. “We used the information and knowledge from year one to make this year’s event even better, and we are hoping people take away an even better experience.”

A unique aspect to Big South is the competition portion, where professional judges award winners for different beer

styles.

Beer Judge Certification Program judges held a tasting at Milton’s Olde Blind Dog, the host of Big South, on April 13. The winners of each of the 10 categories and a Grand Champion will be named at 6 p.m. during the May 11 event. Squires said announcing the winners at the midpoint of the festival allows attendees ample time to taste the award-winning brews.

This year’s event will also focus more on local breweries.

“Last year we had a lot of local breweries, but we also had a good amount of regional and national breweries,” Squires said. “We cut down on those this year because we had a lot more local breweries that wanted to take part.”

North Fulton and Forsyth County will be represented by Currahee Brewing Company, Gate City Brewing Company, Cherry Street Brewing, Six Bridges Brewing and last year’s Grand Champion Jekyll Brewing. Other Georgia breweries include Service Brewing, Etowah Meadery, Orpheus Brewing, Monday Night Brewing and Reformation Brewery.

Those who find a beer they like can use the Big South phone app or fill out an order sheet and pick up a pack and order of the brews at Olde Crabapple

On letting go

Christina and I traveled to Norman, Oklahoma last week, possibly for the second to last time.

We’ll be back in a couple of weeks for Ray appen Carl’s graduation.

Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com Amelia graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and when Carl graduates, we will have been attending the school for the better part of 10 years, although it feels longer. During that time, we have always tried to visit at least once a semester to participate, just for a few days in the life that our children live in that wonderful academic world.

We almost always sit in on as many classes as we can fit into our schedule, and both the kids — Amelia and Carl — have always been glad, I think, that we would have the interest in doing that. The professors too, I think, are usually a bit surprised, but after they figure out that there really is no hidden agenda, they almost always relax and, in the back of their minds, may even be somewhat flattered.

The visits to Norman and especially attending classes, always takes me back — way back — to that place in my mind that will forever store my time in school. It is a bittersweet place for me. I immediately miss it and want to go back.

And while I do love what I do now and where my life resides now, that time I don’t think I will ever let go completely.

It always startles me when I hear a parent bragging about how fast their kid went through school. Other than the expense, “why,” I always think to myself, “why would you see that as a good thing?” So, they can get into corporate faster and start their 25 years of doing something for the benefit of someone else instead of spending their time learning for themselves?

We’re going to miss OU. Christina and I used to spend as much time as we could in the soft, enabling silence of the OU library. We even had a hidden nook where we would go escape to and read while the kids were in class. We’d sit for hours in two stoic high-backed wooden reading chairs, each placed directly beneath two aging framed prints — one of Shakespeare and the other Cervantes. The nook felt like our own special personal space —private space — where only reading and silence were permitted.

Adjacent to our little hidden nook was my favorite — the great reading room with its 30-foot tall ceiling. The room itself is perhaps 150 feet long and paneled wall to wall in hardwoods.

Long narrow windows line the sides of the room and admit diffused light into vacuous space. Hand-crafted lamps

— cast-iron and possibly blown glass — hang from long, black, steel chains bolted into the towering ceiling above. A dark mahogany reading table stretches through the center room like a train in the distance. Long rows of plush leathercovered oak chairs crowd both sides of the table — sentries guarding a royal procession.

Nothing moves. The air is still and feels frozen as if in a tomb. The smell of old books and curiosity from a thousand students, and then thousands more, and the passage of time — decades upon decades — seems to permeate this space.

Three stories up — or was it four — we follow Carl through the archives — deep into the bowels of the library. These books that fill endless rows of steel shelves lie dormant as if in a deep slumber — fading red, dull orange, “earthy” toned covers, deep brown leather-bound books with cracks from age — obviously unused and unread in decades, perhaps longer. We walk slowly, taking care and slouching slightly to avoid hitting the piping running through the low ceilings.

We pass tens of thousands of books and bound periodicals as we follow him.

“Here in Oklahoma there is a law that says that the library can’t sell any of the old books or periodicals and that they must be burned instead if they want to get rid of them,” he tells us. We are alone up here. We pass no students.

Few pass these long, narrow corridors.

“We are in a vault — a time machine of knowledge and of history, “ I think to myself.

I’m glad we do not hurry.

At the end of a row, we turn a corner see a low seated narrow window emitting dull light onto the floor of the walkway, and dust particles ride the beams of light in random motion. Carl points to the small step stool off to the side, next to the window.

“This is my space,” he says, “where I can go. I sometimes sit up here for hours and read,” he shares with us.

“Does he know,“ I wonder. He will tell his children about these books, and this space someday.

Later, we walk past a non-descriptlooking three story building as we leave the library for what may be the last time. I remembered that Carl had shared with me a couple years ago that the building was one of Andrew Carnegie’s first charitable donations and that originally it was the OU library. Now it is where Carl takes many of his Letter’s classes — Latin, philosophy and history. As we walk past the building, I think that Carnegie would probably be pleased to see his donation is still helping bring knowledge to the world after almost a hundred years.

NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Twenty North Fulton and Forsyth County programs began their quest for state titles this week in the first round of the state playoffs.

Class 7A boys Milton 5, Grayson 0 — Hosting their first playoff game in three years, Milton scored three goals in the first half and shut out Grayson to move on to round two.

Gary Dinnall and Ryan Brinza scored goals and Michael Gagne netted a penalty kick to put the Eagles up by three at the half. Hunter Dinnall scored two goals in the second half to secure Milton’s win.

The Eagles will take on Region 7 No. 4 seed Norcross at home May 2.

Roswell 4, Lowndes 1 (OT) — Though Roswell needed overtime to down Lowndes, the Hornets netted three goals in the additional two periods to advance.

Max Wolverton netted a hat trick and CJ Ryan added a goal to power Roswell’s win over the Region 1 champs.

The Hornets are on the road in round two where they will face North Cobb.

Class 7A girls Milton 1, Archer 0 — Milton earned a dramatic win over Archer in the first round April 23 to punch its ticket to the second round.

The Eagles’ Catherine Watry scored with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, and Milton held on for the win.

Milton goes on the road next week against Parkview in a rematch of last year’s Class 7A state championship game.

Rockdale Co. 4, Forsyth Central 3 — Forsyth Central’s season ended April 23 with a 4-3 loss to Region 8 champions Rockdale County.

The Bulldogs compiled an 8-8-2 record this season and went 4-6 in Region 5-AAAAAAA play.

Roswell 5, Tift Co. 0 — Roswell earned a lopsided win in south Georgia to open its 2019 playoff run. The Hornets scored three goals in the first half and kept Tift off the scoreboard for their eighth shutout this season.

Evee Reeder led the offensive charge with two goals. Meghan Connelly, Mallie McKenzie and Taylor Oakley also found the back of the net.

The Hornets will be on the road again in the second round where they face Region 2 champions East Coweta.

Though Johns Creek averaged nearly four goals per game in the regular season, they failed to find the back of the net in regulation or overtime. However, the Gladiators secured the dramatic win with game-clinching save from Sierra Fowler in the shootout.

Harrison 2, Northview 0 — Though Northview ended a long absence from the playoffs April 25, the Titans were shut out by Region 6 champions Harrison.

Johns Creek High athletes sign to colleges JOHNS CREEK, Ga. —Johns Creek High School held a spring signing day ceremony April 17 for six student-athletes who will be playing their sport at the collegiate level.

Ethan Davey signed his letter of intent to swim for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Davey has been a competitive swimmer for 10 years, including all four years at Johns Creek High School.

Davey is a four-year letterman whose accomplishments include being a 2019 state runner-up in the 50 free, being a recipient of the Gladiator award and 2018 MVP. Ryan Harkin will be attending Johns Hopkins University on a Lacrosse scholarship. He has played lacrosse for 14 years, and for four as part of the JCHS team.

Harkin was a four-year varsity player, racking up over 130 career points and serving as team captain.

Chloe Kim will be playing soccer for Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. She has played soccer for 15 years.

But “no worries.” The surprised professor invited us to stay and participate — and we did for several hours.

The discussion was about David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech “This is Water,” which Carl discovered years ago and shared with me. I have watched the YouTube video of his speech many times and it is to this day, one of my more treasured possessions.

Near the end of the discussion, one of the students — the one who until that point had said not a single word the whole time — spoke.

“Wallace made two points,” he observed.
