SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.
The beginning of every new year is always a busy period for many within the UK wet leisure industry and this year has been no exception. An early start date for the industry’s only dedicated show, SPATEX, followed by some up and down weather combined with ongoing uncertainty surrounding Brexit has meant many businesses don’t know which way to turn. At least unlike last year, there isn’t any snow on the ground – well not in the South East anyway! In fact, the last couple of days have been glorious, so I hope it’s a sign of things to come. For a change, this year is one year in which the weather may not be the most important factor for our industry. So what is? Well, Brexit seems to be the biggest concern that is still lurking in the background – and that’s no real surprise given the way negotiations have progressed since the vote. The result – a complete lack of certainty for many businesses, something which is especially acute in an industry such as ours due to the reliance on a lot of imported equipment. A fact which became apparent following numerous conversations at SPATEX which was then echoed by the wider industry via the recently released results of the annual Wet Leisure Survey, organised by the BSPF and Golden Coast. Things are still up in the air as this edition of SPN goes to print and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s still the case when the next one comes around too! Having touched on the subjects of both SPATEX and the weather, unfortunately exaggerated forecasts took the shine off what was shaping up to be a great annual event at the Ricoh
Arena. The show still delivered, but unfortunately visitors, especially on the last day thought better of attempting to visit the Midlands-based venue despite snow never really falling there – well not in any great volume. SPN were pleased to be among well over 100 companies who exhibited at the annual three-day event which again saw a superb effort all round from both the organisers and exhibitors, resulting in a great looking and professional show that featured plenty of innovative products and we’ve a review of that later in this edition. Also held during SPATEX are the annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA – an evening which celebrates some of the best swimming pool, hot tub and swim spa projects from across our industry – and we’ve coverage on all the Gold Award winners from this year’s event along with a write up on the night itself.
Inside, we also explore what’s new in the onepiece and fibreglass pools market, a sector that’s enjoying continued success due to taking the hassle out of installations for both pool builders and owners alike, and still on the subject of convenience, we’ve an in depth look at the latest automatic pool cover systems too. Pool liners and systems – perfect for both new build and refurbishment projects – are also featured in this edition and if that wasn’t enough to keep you going over Easter, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams takes a look at the importance of individuals within successful teams. Following the UK’s largest outbreak of the water-borne parasitic disease Giardiasis at a swim school in York, the STA’s Robbie Phillips looks at the subject of dirty pools, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve also a Project Showcase on the beautiful, pure waterfed Nirvana Spa in Berkshire. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, eco, people and wellness news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So with this issue pretty much covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy this latest issue of SPN – I hope you have a great Easter!

EVAline LEDs Light Up Waltham Abbey’s Pool Hall Dutch lighting pioneer EVA Optic is gaining attention across the UK, following the implementation of its high-efficiency ambient lighting in the pool hall at the new multimillion-pound leisure centre project at Waltham Abbey in Essex. Project lead Pellikaan Construction specified EVA’s revolutionary LED lighting – available exclusively through Golden Coast in the UK. It helps to reduce energy costs and environmental impact, while delivering longterm reliability and meeting Sport England’s strict lighting rules. Electrical contractors Barrie Beard successfully secured the tender for electrical installation, which includes 26 EVAline LED lights for ambient lighting in the facility’s large pool hall. “Our original design for the pool was in the form of flood lighting – both direct and indirect,” recalled Barrie Beard Associate Director Darren Stokes. “This type of installation is widely used. However, in some installations it can negatively impact the finish of the wall and building by highlighting imperfections. “EVA’s understanding of wet leisure lighting meant they had a better solution. Direct linear lighting casts light to the pool
rather than walls, offering a much better finish all round.” Direct lighting also saves electrical contractors’ valuable time on site because of its ease of use. The system is quicker than other lighting schemes and therefore helps with general overall project times for creating prompt installations. EVALine LEDs are manufactured from materials suitable for use in a challenging environment like a pool hall, where heat, chlorine and humidity create issues. EVA’s
lightweight body components and fixing materials are manufactured from galvanised, duplexcoated or anodised metals. What’s more, units benefit from anti-overheating technology to ensure at least 50,000 hours of use. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
World Leisure Wins Braywick Park Pool Contract Leyland headquartered swimming pool provider World Leisure (UK) Ltd has been appointed by Wates Construction to build the water leisure facilities at a new £34m leisure centre in Maidenhead. Due to open spring 2020 and replacing Maidenhead’s Magnet Leisure Centre, the new Braywick Leisure Centre will include increased facilities and plans to use 70% less energy than its predecessor. World Leisure has been commissioned to build a ten-lane swimming pool – up from eight lanes at the Magnet – as well as larger training and splash pools. Further features will include a 200-station gym, a large sports hall, improved accessibility for disabled users and sports teams, and twice as much car parking as the Magnet Leisure Centre. World Leisure Managing Director Simon Smith said: “We are extremely pleased to have been appointed by Wates on this major contract, which in its

entirety will be the biggest single project we have delivered to date.” Alec Jackman, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction Southern Home Counties, commented: “This is an extremely important project for the people of Maidenhead and World Leisure brings a wealth of experience and expertise within the wet leisure industry. We’re pleased to welcome the team to our supply chain as construction continues apace on the creation of this new leisure centre for the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead.” Works at the Braywick Leisure Centre are being carried out by Wates on behalf of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead via Major Works - UK, part of Scape’s National Construction framework. The framework has been designed to deliver significant levels of local economic engagement as well as extensive community initiatives. World Leisure (UK) Ltd 01772 284883 www.worldleisureuk.co.uk

NEWS CAMPAIGN FOR WELSH POOL GIVEN COUNCIL BOOST Campaigners hoping to bring back an open air swimming pool in Abergavenny have been given landowner consent for fundraising activities from the local authority. Monmouthshire council agreed the consent but reiterated that it is not in a position to offer money for the pool project, estimated to cost around £7m. Abergavenny Lido Group was set up after more than 1,000 people signed a petition calling to bring back the popular outdoor pool which was originally built in 1938, but was closed by the local council in the early 1980s. The campaign started on social media, with dozens of people sharing memories and photos of the former pool which was open to the public in the summer months and used by schools through winter.
PEOPLE POWER PREVENTS POOL CLOSURES IN MORAY Swimming pools located within leisure centres in Lossiemouth and Keith, which were due to close under plans to plug a £14m funding gap, have been saved following the signing up of residents to a ‘use it or lose it’ campaign. The local council left the door open to the facilities being safeguarded if 300 locals signed up for a leisure loyalty scheme. The target would generate about £100,000 over the course of the year to make the pools more selfsustaining. Council leader Graham Leadbitter described the response from communities as “phenomenal”. It is now hoped that other leisure services could also be protected if the huge uptake in sign-ups continue, however opposition councillors branded the campaign as an ‘underhand tax’ to lever more money out of residents.

SCP’s ‘Showcase’ Event Proves Popular With The Trade
Through continued investment, SCP UK is able to provide the best possible service to its customer base and the most recent example of this investment is a fantastic new Trade Counter facility at its Gatwick distribution centre. This new area, along with an impressive Academy Training room plus a mezzanine floor located within the company’s large warehouse, recently played host to the SCP Showcase – a three-day event used by the company and numerous suppliers to highlight many of the products, and in particular new innovations, that will be available to the trade for the coming season. The event is geared specially to give trade customers time to get up close with products and then be able to discuss them one on one with a number of representatives from either SCP or from suppliers and manufacturers directly. With a wide range of products to view which included cover systems, hot tubs and spa accessories, on-site lining, water treatment and testing, sound systems, commercial equipment and saunas to name but a
few, there really was something for everyone. It’s a relaxed environment for all and clearly a popular concept as each day saw a busy stream of customers arrive at the venue and suppliers, without exception, all gave glowing reviews regarding both the numbers arriving and quality of visitors seen. Dash Ganeson, Managing Director at SCP UK commented that: “The showcase had been a resounding success and the positive feedback received over the three days, both from the attending trade customer base and vendors was extremely satisfying to hear.” He added: “Despite the current economic and political uncertainty due to Brexit, the pool and spa market remains fundamentally strong with order books already filling up for the upcoming season.” SCP UK 01293 546126 www.scpeurope.com
Industry Forecast 2019: Sunny With A Chance Of Brexit According to findings from the Wet Leisure Industry Survey released in January, the industry is planning on another strong year despite political and economic uncertainty. More than 86% of survey respondents expect to enjoy a 2019 falling somewhere between ‘OK’ and ‘Extremely Good’, something which organiser Golden Coast hopes rings true. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “Thanks to overwhelming support from the industry’s leading organisations, including BISHTA, BSPF and ISPE, and
key trade publications, the survey is now in its seventh year. “That length of time provides real insights into the industry’s trends and thinking. Year in, year out, we see evidence that businesses typically expect the year ahead to be much like the one that’s just finished. Last year’s outstanding weather certainly played a role in many companies’ successes.” While most respondents hold an optimistic view of the year ahead, the survey also highlighted the challenges they felt the future might hold. Respondents raised concerns
over meeting ever-increasing customer expectations, training and recruitment, and legislative updates, including Brexit. “Brexit certainly remains as the biggest question mark on the horizon,” said Jamie. “Nearly one in three respondents specifically mentioned it in their comments. However, whether you see it as a problem or an opportunity, no one can say exactly what its effect will be.” Results from the Wet Leisure Industry Survey along with previous year’s results can be viewed online now at www. wetleisure.com

NEWS RECOMMENDATIONS APPROVED FOR BINGHAM LEISURE CENTRE Recommendations for a new £20m leisure centre and commercial space in Bingham, Nottinghamshire have been approved by Rushcliffe Borough Council. Independent consultants have worked with the Local Authority to produce the plan having explored options to develop the site which will consist of a mix of commercial and leisure facilities. The plan is consistent with aspirations to develop the site as part of a key gateway between the current town centre and the growth of local housing developments. Proposals for a new swimming pool and other leisure facilities, plus serviced offices are now set to be reviewed as part of a report to the group.
NEW NORTH DEVON LEISURE CENTRE BACKED BY COUNCIL Councillors at North Devon Council have backed plans to provide a new leisure centre at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple. Council members approved a recommendation to proceed with the construction of a new swimming pool, sports hall and exercise studios next to an existing tennis centre. The council is still waiting to hear if their funding applications to Sport England and Coastal Communities Fund have both been successful. If this funding falls into place, the council hopes to start work on the project later this year. Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dick Jones, said: “A decision from Full Council is another positive step towards the delivery of a new pool and leisure facilities to replace our ageing leisure centre at Seven Brethren. The results of our funding applications are key and we have our fingers firmly crossed for some good news later this month.” A decision on funding is expected while SPN is at print.

Green Light For Derby’s New Pool It’s full steam ahead for Derby’s new pool at Moorways. Derby City Council gave the green light to build a much larger leisure water pool as part of the new complex last month. A capital budget of £42m has been approved to deliver and complete the whole project by late 2021. Designed with families and children in mind, the new plans include a number of thrills and spills that will serve the city for decades to come. It will now include a play structure, beach area, two flumes, a wave generating ‘wow’ ball, play structure, multi-slide
and a wave rider. Delivering the additional features is expected to make the complex more attractive to families. The experience will be more exciting and thrilling, providing fun for families and children up to age 15. Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member of Leisure, Culture and Tourism: said: “It’s a very exciting time for Derby.
This investment will provide the city with a fantastic complex that will serve residents and visitors for decades to come. Our decision to go ahead with a much larger leisure water pool with more fun features for families and children is delivering what Derby residents want.” The complex at Moorways will offer a 50m pool, learner pool, café, soft play, sauna, steam facilities, multi-use rooms, gym and studio. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in late 2021, with a new planning application submitted this summer and construction beginning later this year.

Hydro-Flux Aqua Products Celebrates After Receiving £20,000 Grant Partnership Sees Completion Of Much Anticipated Indoor School Pool On 30 January 2019, Thorpe House School in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire and Seriously FUN Swimming Schools celebrated the launch of Thorpe House’s newly covered and renovated 18 metre swimming pool with an official ceremony. Despite freezing temperatures and the threat of snow, the event was well attended. Guests included school governors, directors, staff and parents from both Thorpe House and Seriously FUN plus the senior Head Boy and a selection of the school’s elite swimmers. The star guest however was Olympic gold medal winner Adrian Moorhouse MBE. Adrian, who lives in Cookham and is a long time Seriously FUN customer, performed the ribbon cutting ceremony and talked about how the pool will benefit pupils at Thorpe House, Seriously FUN customers and the local community. Following a demonstration by some of the school’s swimming team coached by PE teacher and
qualified swimming instructor, Paul Britton, Adrian joined Year 11 pupil, Ellis for an interview about his swimming career. Seriously FUN approached Thorpe House in 2017 to fund the building of an enclosure to cover their existing outdoor school swimming pool. In the 1980s, there were an estimated 3,000 school swimming pools, those numbers have dwindled by one third, and are being lost at a rate of 10% a year, according to the Amateur Swimming Association. Jonathon Madden, Owner at Seriously FUN commented: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Thorpe House School to create this fantastic new swimming facility. The partnership provides ongoing income for the school by way of a long term hire agreement and secures the pool’s future at a time when many other schools are closing their swimming pools.” Seriously FUN 01753 364364 www.seriouslyfun.com
Launched in October 2017, Hydro-Flux Aqua Products Limited started life with one goal in mind: to manufacturer unique, innovative products that make life easier for swimming pool engineers and pool owners. With their first product, FlowBright – a swimming pool light that generates its own electricity, eliminating the need for a complex installation, additional equipment, and electrical costs – Hydro-Flux certainly had the ideas to make this goal a reality. However, they recognised that they might need some assistance in taking them to the next stage. Having looked at AD:VENTURE – a Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership – the company worked alongside a dedicated Business Advisor to put together detailed plans, forecasts and targets. Once complete, the organisation was assessed for its eligibility to access grant funding from the programme and secured just under £20,000. Using the funds to change a large warehouse into furnished offices, the business was able to purchase furniture, computers, printers, and the tooling equipment required to manufacture the product, making it a viable innovation to take to market. Director at Hydro-Flux, Michael Burnham, commented: “Without AD:VENTURE there is no way we could have put our idea into practice. Not only did we need some guidance and governance to make sure we were following the necessary processes, but we were also finding it difficult to raise the funds, as the equipment and tooling isn’t cheap. Securing the grant made all of the difference and we went from kitchen table to furnished offices almost overnight. It was great. Not only was the environment different but our mindset and the way that we approached the business changed.” FlowBright is now available to the UK trade via Fairlocks Pool Products and is one of a number of new and innovative products available from the distributor in 2019. STA Lead The Way With Pool Plant Operative Training
Heatstar’s Production Capability Grows Again To Meet Demand During late 2017 and early 2018 Heatstar re-organised their premises to release more space for the manufacture and production of their range of swimming pool environmental control systems. This also coincided with a 20% increase in its production workforce. These changes were all driven by Heatstar’s desire to improve customer service and better meet the demand for its products. Following another successful year, and having started 2019 as they mean to carry on, the company have announced an additional re-allocation of workspace to increase its production capabilities again to further maintain and improve its delivery lead times. Along with the additional factory space these new changes have also seen the development of a brand new purpose-built dedicated testing and appraisal facility for every Heatstar unit before it is delivered to the customer. Ensuring that Heatstar units operate at the peak of their capabilities is a constant thread running through all of the company’s manufacturing
and supply processes. They are manufactured from the highest quality materials and built exclusively in the UK by Heatstar trained staff in their own dedicated facility on the Isle of Wight in the south of England. On completion every unit then goes through a rigorous inspection and testing process to ensure each individual unit is operating to the correct level of performance standards before leaving the factory. On installation at the client’s location Heatstar offer a free commissioning system to ensure every unit is installed correctly. The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has defined a new employer-led professional standard for the role of a pool plant operative in the UK, as part of its primary objective to ‘define and facilitate professional development’. Leading the way is STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations, which is the only qualification that currently meets the new Pool Plant Operative Professional Standard, and to receive professional endorsement by CIMSPA, the sector’s single chartered professional body. Luke Griffiths MCIMSPA, Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at Safety Training Awards (STA’s Awarding Organisation), said he is delighted that the Level 3 qualification successfully meets the professional standard set by the industry. He said: “As an awarding organisation with a passion for professionalising training in this niche, but important sector of the leisure market, receiving professional endorsement from CIMSPA further highlights the high quality of the qualification, its relevance to a modern leisure industry and most importantly, how it serves to promote safe pool, spa and interactive water feature operations. “Furthermore, by being the only pool plant qualification currently to meet this new employerled professional standard shows our commitment to providing the highest quality training for pool plant operatives in the UK.” STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification, which launched in 2018 following a year’s development and consultation with industry groups, has been produced by the STA to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and relevant to the industry and all different pool types − from sports and leisure centres to hotels, spas, and interactive water features. Written with the whole industry in mind, it is more user-friendly, robust and has a technically advanced syllabus that importantly covers all aspects of running a pool, spa or interactive water feature plant. Poolworks Come To The Rescue With The Hyprolyser North Kent College swimming pool is open daily to the public and is also used for fire training and as a national sea training centre. Their facility had a 15-year-old dosing station to help keep the pool clean, but would regularly break down and spread granules everywhere. The college was after a more sustainable and reliable product that’s also simpler to use, so they approached Poolworks – a specialist pool company who help to improve the day-to-day running of commercial pools in the UK. After Poolworks consulted with the technical team at

Golden Coast, the Hyprolyser iSEC 90 electrochlorination system was recommended as an economic option. It allows for the on-site generation of a non-hazardous sodium hypochlorite solution using just salt, water and electricity. Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast said: “The Hyprolyser is incredibly efficient and an ideal way to improve indoor pool systems. It helps to prevent accidental spillages as it’s so easy to use: the operator just adds salt to the tank.” John Bennett, the Director of Poolworks said: “This was our first
Hyprolyser from Golden Coast, it was easy to set up and took less than 2 hours to install. “With daily pool use, it doesn’t require a complex operation with harmful chemicals. You simply add salt to the tank; the rest is done electronically. The team at North Kent College love how simple it is and no longer having the smell of chemicals in the plant room. “The support from Golden Coast has been excellent as always. Any problems were easily resolved, and I would be very happy to work with them again.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

SCP Appoints New Water Treatment Product Manager
Industry Survey Reveals Staff Training Concerns A shortage of staff skills was cited as a key issue for 2019 by trade members who anonymously took part in the recently published Wet Leisure Industry Survey. When asked about what challenges they anticipate over the coming year, 20% of comments from participants related to difficulties in finding staff with the right qualifications and knowledge. The struggle to find personnel with the appropriate training could in part be due to the poor availability of apprenticeships and courses, which has contributed to a lack of skill development within the wet leisure sector. As an industry specialist and distributor, Golden Coast is dedicated to closing the knowledge gap and provides regular engineer training days designed to expand skillsets and teach new techniques – expertise that can then be passed on to new trainees. “We work in a continually changing industry and training days are an investment in the future as they offer a lot of new product insight,” said Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast. Events such as water care days
cover a variety of topics, including demonstrations, installation guidance and technical support, all based on real-life scenarios. Customers can also benefit from factory visits to manufacturers such as Tylö, Speck and DEL, which offer a valuable opportunity to see firsthand how products are made. “By sharing Golden Coast’s experience and technical skills we can help our customers and their engineers to be confident in the products they work with,” concluded Jamie. A range of online resources are available from Golden Coast, including its YouTube channel which hosts a wealth of the ever-popular Andy’s Answers videos which covers a tremendous range of subjects. The Golden Coast website also contains sales and marketing tools which can be used when training new staff.

Historic Pools Women Makes a Splash As International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8 March, one of the team at Historic Pools of Britain was also being recognised. A panel of judges announced the selection of Gill Wright, founder of the heritage-focused organisation and Project Development Manager at Manchester’s Victoria Baths Trust, as one of The Planner’s Women of Influence for 2019. Each year The Planner – the official magazine of the Royal Town Planning Institute – names the most influential women in and around planning, as nominated by its readers. 2019 is the fifth consecutive year the list has been produced, but the first using a formal nomination and judging process.

This recognition highlights the amazing work of just one of the many women within a wide network who dedicate their time, expertise and passion to bringing the UK’s historic pools back to life.
Historic Pools of Britain was established in 2015 to give representation for the first time to all indoor and outdoor pools that were built pre-1945 (or later pools with historical significance), reflecting the fact that they play an important role in their communities, and also make a very significant contribution to Britain’s heritage. Across the country there are examples of civic architecture at its very best, including pools of the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Modern Movement periods. Available through SCP, ICO Tech is the latest product in the range of smart monitoring solutions from Ondilo and joins its ICO Pool and ICO Spa variants for the 2019 season. All three products share the same, core and convenient functionality, but the ICO Tech differs in that unlike its freefloating cousins, it is plumbed directly inline, connecting to the existing pipe network with a transparent analysis chamber. All of the ICO products provide 24/7 monitoring of water within a pool or spa which is then analysed and software then formulates recommendations which are available to view by pool owners or service companies via a smartphone app. Alerts are automated within the software and issues are even anticipated with relevant contacts notified just in time! Suitable for use in installations where water is treated with salt, bromine or chlorine, the ICO sensors provide measurements for pH, Redox/ORP, conductivity and water temperature. There are also estimations for salt levels and water hardness. Connected using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, each unit is plug and play with only the ICO Tech needing any physical fitting. The battery on each variant lasts four months and recharging is simple and done via a USB port using the supplied charger. Both owners and pool professionals will love the ICO, as each unit allows remote monitoring plus there’s a built-in ‘call my pro’ button for customers. For professionals, multiple sites are catered for meaning customer relationships can be managed perfectly. SCP UK 01293 546126 www.scpeurope.com
Pahlén Provides Any Pool With A Luxury Stainless Steel Finish Achieving a luxury look and feel for your pool is easier and more affordable than ever before thanks to the wide range of stainless steel fittings and features from Swedish manufacturer Pahlén. Exclusively available through Golden Coast, the products combine form with function, and offer impressive results, as Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained. “Pahlén designs are carefully considered. Their wide-mouth stainless steel skimmer is a game-changer. “Traditionally, they empty from above – meaning that owners must live with a skimmer lid and frame that detracts from the pool surround. But that’s the last thing you want when you’re investing in a pool, particularly an indoor installation, so Pahlén’s designers identified an elegant workaround that means you can empty the skimmer basket from the front… eliminating the issue completely.” In addition to the skimmer, other accessories include inlets, vac points and main drains. The Swedish manufacturer also offers three countercurrent units designed to boost the versatility of any pool

including this year’s new introduction – Jet Swim Motion. The ingenious counter-current system features a new flow technique to encourage more natural swimming. Engineered from acid-proof stainless steel (AISI 316L), Jet Motion features two oval nozzles, with the lower directed downwards for a more even distribution of the streams. With a motor power of 2.2 kW and a pump capacity of 46 m³/h, Jet Swim Motion helps owners focus on strength and conditioning. The easy-to-use units are started by simply pressing a button on the front. Its waterflow, jet streams and air mixture can be adjusted quickly and easily for greater flexibility. Units benefit from a modern, minimalist design. The Jet Swim Motion’s handle, for example, has been integrated into the front of the unit and is discretely placed. HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS
Happy Hot Dub Finds A New Home After featuring at two successful exhibitions – SPATEX 2018 in Coventry and Piscine Global 2018 in Lyon – Plastica felt it was time for someone else to reap the rewards of owning their Hot Dub creation. Plastica’s spa-in-a-car was conceived and built in less than eight weeks by technical engineer Jody Perkins using a convertible VW Beetle, and Jody had the added challenge of keeping the electric windows, roof and steering all functional. In fact, it was at both these trade shows that the new owners, Happy Hot Tubs saw the show stopping Hot Dub and could see its crowd-pulling potential for their showrooms and future county shows. This family-run business was established over the past 30
years by founder Simon Hallett. Currently being run by two generations of the family plus an experienced team, Happy Hot Tubs have six showrooms located on the South Coast and one in the Midlands. The successful spa business has plans to add two more opening in 2019. The Hot Dub, currently based in Fareham, will be touring upcoming county shows and working its magic at various Happy Hot Tub showrooms across the UK. Founder, Simon said: “We are delighted to be the new owners of the Hot Dub and are grateful to Plastica for handing over their prized possession. It’s a wonderful piece of engineering and design! We have plans to display it at our various show rooms, and even build a
dedicated website to document its progress.” So, the Hot Dub lives on, and Plastica are happy to see it go to a good home, to wow future hot tub customers for years to come! Happy Hot Tubs 02380 812769 www.happyhottubs.co.uk Plastica 01424 857857 www.plasticapools.net

AirO2: The Best Of Both Worlds Golden Coast’s latest addition to its Essentials range has been years in the making, but, according to the independent distributor, this game-changing inflatable cover system is well worth the wait for spa owners and the industry. Launched in January, the AirO2 is a ground-breaking inflatable cover engineered using a dual bladder, drop-stitch construction to support more than 227 kilograms. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “Because it uses the same construction approaches used in white water rafts and paddle boards, it offers the exceptional durability necessary to outlast traditional covers.” Available for new and existing spas, the air tight design and materials means that, uniquely, the AirO2 cannot absorb water. “For owners, this means that opening and closing the tub remains as easy on day one as it does one year on. “Better still, it maintains its insulation value throughout the life of the cover – reducing the amount of heat and water lost, and, in turn, reducing running costs for big savings.” The advantages of choosing AirO2 don’t end there, according to Golden Coast. “The AirO2’s designers have really considered the needs of installers during development. With its space-saving inflatability, it’s a cover that’s compact and easy-to-transport. With storage space at a premium, this level of portability allows the industry to work more efficiently. The AirO2 spa cover, which is part of the Essentials range of pool and hot tub accessories, features a contemporary fabric skin that is available in a choice of three colours – ensuring it’s both functional and stylish. US Halotherapy Firm Announces Relationship With Dröm UK Global Halotherapy Solutions (GHS), a prominent provider of salt therapy solutions, is pleased to announce a new and exciting working relationship with Dröm UK Ltd, a leading designer and installer of luxury, bespoke thermal wellbeing areas. According to SpaFinder and other industry experts, Halotherapy continues to be one of the Top 5 growing wellbeing trends. Whilst still in its early stages of growth in the UK, North America has seen a substantial rise over the last year of this well-established therapy that has been present in many European countries for some time. The prestigious Global Wellness Institute has recently created an initiative, led by GHS CEO Steve Spiro, with leading experts from all over the world, including Erin Lee, Managing Director of Dröm UK, to ensure there is one digital location to collect and share the vast amount of research and media coverage of the treatment. An Eco-friendly Hot Tub Water Treatment Solution Surespa Ltd, a company which specialises in innovative hot tub chemicals and accessories, has announced the launch of eco3spa – the newly developed product which the company says addresses the growing need for an easy to use, environmentally friendly and chlorine-free hot tub water treatment solution. eco3spa uses a 3-step system for the safe disinfection of water and has been developed to meet an increasing demand from users who find that traditional chlorine and bromine based sanitisers are complicated to use and can be hazardous to both health and the environment. The three main elements of eco3spa are all designed to work symbiotically to provide a complete water care solution: Hot Tub Cleaner; designed to ‘spring clean’ a tub’s plumbing system using no harsh acids or compounds and which can then be drained onto the garden. A Water Conditioner; enzyme based and uses naturally occurring Coconut fatty acids at its core to break down water contaminents whilst the hot tub is in use. Active Oxygen Based Water Sanitiser; highly effective at the naturally higher water temperatures of a hot tub in eradication of harmful bacteria. Surespa’s Managing Director, Anne Knight stated: “During the many years that we have been supplying the hot tub market we have become increasingly aware of the need for a water treatment product that does not rely on chlorine as its sanitiser. “Our natural hot tub treatment will give you better water quality with an environmentally friendly product and relying on the supplementary power of Active Oxygen disinfection to remove harmful bacteria.” Surespa also believe that new products need to incorporate minimal environmental impact and eco3spa has adopted this mantra with key components plus associated packaging being as environmentally friendly as possible. Give Your Customers A Year-round Glow Infrared (IR) saunas have hit the news following revelations that supermodel Elle McPherson credits them for giving her a year-round glow, alongside her daily routine of celery juice, fresh air, steam and dinner by 6pm. While IR saunas assist the body in shedding toxins, some users – like Elle – report that it enhances their ‘glow’ and encourages better sleeping. But according to Golden Coast, IR rooms are not just for former, current or would-be supermodels. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “We’ve seen infrared products grow in popularity in the US in recent years among health and wellbeing enthusiasts. RotoSpa’s New Hot Tub Model Already A Holiday Park Hit RotoSpa, the UK’s only manufacturer of spas, launched their holiday park specific spas – the Serenity and the Escape – in May 2018, and the Serenity Spa has already won a Best Buy Award for spas used within the Holiday Park sector. With its 2,000mm diameter and 740mm deep specs, the Serenity Spa is perfect for getting the family together whilst on holiday. Its smooth, full-depth seating and generous footwell ensures the most natural resting position, whilst also providing maximum relaxation. Its bench seating with specially considered hydrotherapy system allows the user to choose which spot they’d prefer. Other built-in features of the spa make the spa fully HSG282 compliant, with its in-line
tablet feeder, ozone unit for another form of sanitisation and its rapid drain system to name a few. RotoSpa were one of the first manufacturers to introduce the fully HSG282 compliant spa to the market. Spas are becoming an ever-growing trend as well as a need within the holiday park market, with ‘hot tubs’ being a number one online search when people are researching their holiday. However, it is important that if the spa is to be used in a commercial setting, that it complies with the HSG282 regulations, to ensure safety amongst customers and holiday owners a-like. The Serenity Spa is in holiday parks up and down the UK, and with more innovative products planned from RotoSpa, the company is set to see some exciting changes in 2019. One such product, RotoSpa’s Air Source Heat Pump, was introduced in early 2018 to its customers and the innovative alternative energy unit not only allows for the running of spas to be more environmentally friendly, but according to the company, slashes running costs by 75%! Lighting The Way To A Cleaner Future In China With the structure completed in 2016, the 530m high CTF Finance Centre in Guangzhou is one of China’s tallest buildings and amongst the top ten highest in the world. The ultra-high-rise landmark is part of a trio of supertall structures, with the IFC to the West of the city and the Canton Tower situated nearby. atg UV Technology was proud to have been selected to provide the UV systems currently being installed as part of the aquatics project being undertaken on the 94th floor in preparation for completion of the new Rosewood Hotel which will occupy the top 16 floors. The hotel is set to redefine premium luxury in one of China’s most vibrant and dynamic locations, offering 251 guestrooms, 355 residencies, restaurants, bars and an extensive spa and leisure facility with various pool experiences. Barr + Wray, one of the UK’s leading aquatics engineering consultants, had been appointed for the Engineering Consultancy, and subsequently contracted for the design and build for the thermal spa and pool equipment. materials in its construction. Glowing salt brick walls enclose a clean, open space while infusing a plethora of therapeutic benefits. In addition to storing heat and increasing efficiency, unrefined salt cleans the air, relieves skin problems, cleanses the respiratory system and emits negative ions, which elevates mood. A custom-built rail system is used to mount the salt bricks without adhesive or mortar, allowing for easy maintenance and dismantling. Unlike a typical sauna, the WelPod requires no preheating and remains warm at all times. This is possible because of the efficient building envelope, interior salt brick walls that act as a thermal mass, and the intelligent control system. The energyefficient design consumes considerably less power than a traditional sauna, swimming pool, or hot tub. The WelPod is available as a standalone structure that can be placed into any outdoor setting, or as an interior room that can be built into any floor plan.
Waterco continues to flex its muscles in the water treatment industry by expanding its product line along with its manufacturing force. Such is the demand for its commercial fibreglass filters, that an additional 120 new staff have been employed over the last 12 months in the company’s Malaysian fibreglass filter division, bringing the headcount at its manufacturing plant to a total of 500. This is mainly to cope with the manufacturing of commercial fibreglass filters, which have a high labour content. “Waterco is known around the world for pioneering reliable solutions for healthy, safe water environments – and the growth of the company’s sales to the commercial aquatic and water treatment markets around the world is a testament to the global acceptance of Waterco’s commercial filters,” said Tony Fisher, Division CEO Europe and North America. Known for being an environmentally sensitive manufacturer, Waterco’s latest initiative aims to reduce water, power and chemical consumption further in the aquaculture, swimming pool, spa and water filtration sectors. “Our globally respected brand has become synonymous with environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility – and we take that reputation very seriously,” explained Tony. “We recently took the additional step of implementing an Integrated Management System (IMS) that is based on the ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification, and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification – two of the world’s most recognisable certifications.” This new product-related environmental protection requires strict oversight in all phases of Waterco’s product life cycles – from conception, development, manufacture and use, to its end-of-life treatment. “Our intention in implementing the IMS is to make a positive, long-lasting difference for our employees, the environment and for future generations,” added Tony.

Waterco Enters Hot Water System Sector With SolarMate Acquisition Waterco has entered a new business sector with its recent acquisition of leading Malaysian solar water heating company, SolarMate Sdn Bhd. “SolarMate’s established brand name and excellent market reputation will facilitate our entry into the hot water system business and enable us to offer comprehensive and energyefficient water heating solutions to customers throughout Asia,” said Waterco CEO and Chairman, Soon Sinn Goh. The comprehensive water heating solution will comprise Waterco’s heat pumps and SolarMate’s solar hot water heating systems. “Heat pumps are more efficient in the high ambient temperatures and humidity of Asia’s sub-tropical climates. This coupling will, therefore, provide large residential and commercial projects with more energy and cost-efficient options for heating water,” explained Mr Goh.
Waterco plans to release this new coupling of water heating systems throughout the fastgrowing solar hot water market in Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Since the early 1980s, Waterco and SolarMate have both become market leaders, forging strong reputations for design innovation, quality and energy efficiency. SolarMate manufactures, supplies and services solar hot water heaters, solar panels and solar heating systems for customers throughout Asia, Australia and the Pacific regions. Innovation is apparent in the company’s hot water storage system, which boasts a flat
storage tank that enables it to fit flush against inclined roofs. Waterco designs and manufactures filtration, sanitisation and water heating solutions for residential, commercial and industrial applications in the swimming pool and spa, aquaculture and water purification sectors. Its extensive range reliably creates healthy and safe water for customers in over 40 countries. The company constantly explores ways to improve its product offerings. “Innovation is at the core of what we do. By acquiring SolarMate, we will be able to explore substituting the metal components in its water heating system with composite plastics to improve cost efficiency and durability,” said Mr Goh. POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
Events Make A Difference BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights the importance of industry events, education and networking initiatives that take place both in the UK and further afield
B
y the time that you are reading this article, the UK may well have left the EU, or it may still be possible that BREXIT has been delayed! Either way, the pool and hot tub industry pulled out all of the stops to ensure that 2019 got off to a great start with a superbly well-organised SPATEX show in Coventry. A huge thank you to everyone that exhibited and visited SPATEX 2019. Special thanks to Michele Bridle (undertaking her 20th show), Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer, Thaynara Castro, the onsite event team and my fellow SPATEX Directors (Howard Gosling, Tony Welsby and Ben Studdy) for their fantastic work. Thank you also to Ross Alcock and the rest of the ISPE team for another action-packed education programme. SPATEX is also fortunate to have the support of PWTAG and the STA amongst a number of well-respected partners. The annual Industry Gala Dinner provided the backdrop to the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE awards. My thanks to Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Claire Foss and Isabel Lock for their excellent organisation of this industry event. Further details of all of the award winners can be found on page 41. I would also like to thank the sponsors, whose details are found below. Many of the 2019 British Pool and Hot Tub Award winners will be shortlisted for the European Pool and Spa Awards 2019 being held at aquanale in Cologne. The shortlisted companies will be announced in a future issue
of SPN. Talking of shortlisted companies, my sincere apologies to the following BISHTA members that were previously shortlisted for the 2018 European Pool and Spa Awards, as they were inadvertently missed off a previous article: Barnsley Hot Tubs, Euphoria Lifestyle, North Spas, Hot Tub Suppliers, Hydropool Devon and H2O Cannings. SPATEX exists to provide an annual opportunity for the industry to get together to showcase what products and services are available. It is also an invaluable way of raising funds to promote the industry. More than £1.6m has been raised, and this provides support for organisations, such as the BSPF, PIP, SPATA, BISHTA and the ISPE. There is also a growing fund provided for the SPATEX Foundation – a project which has been created to provide funding support for various initiatives that are of benefit to the swimming pool and spa industry as a whole. There is a formal application that covers four main categories: Research, Education, Training and Sponsorship. The Foundation is overseen by the SPATEX Directors and welcomes applications, using the official form, throughout the year. If you would like more information, please email info@ spatex.co.uk The work with our colleagues from Europe and further afield continues to gather momentum. The representatives from EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations) meet regularly to discuss current topics, and this is the last year that Mille Örnmark (Sweden) will be hosting the meetings before handing over to Bert Granderath (Germany). Apart from the EUSA Awards, the 13 current members aim to

work together to influence Brussels regarding legislation. EUSA also works collaboratively to ensure that industry standards can be discussed, where applicable, to better understand what each country would like to see from the guidance as it develops across Europe (not just the EU countries). Also growing in importance is the World Alliance of Pool & Spa Associations (WAPSA). The focus remains on collecting data/ statistics, education opportunities and the topic of safety. It is hoped that the UK can contribute estimates for the size of the market and the number of pools built and hot tubs installed. The ISPE have much to offer the education subgroup, while the safety group are looking at how we can help to learn from each other to reduce the number of drownings around the world, although thankfully in the UK, these numbers are relatively very low (on average approximately six people drown each year in a swimming pool out of a total of 600 people who drown in other places such as rivers, lakes, etc.) However, everything that we can do to promote swimming safety awareness and safe supervision should be encouraged. Many training sessions are being run this year with the aim of increasing the Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and collectively, we can help to encourage lifelong learning. The courses are available from BISHTA, SPATA, ISPE and many individual companies, so look out for the various emails for more information. Please also see a feature on page 36, from SPATA Member, Leisure Energy about how you can ensure your projects are sustainable, and at the same time helping your clients to save money. Fun and socialising should also be a part of what we do in the industry, so if you fancy a trip to Brighton this year, then look no further than Will Dando’s President’s Weekend, which is being held by the sea from 13 – 15 September. Bookings can be made by contacting the office on 01264 356210 / 211 or email admin@bspf.org.uk

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
Save Energy, Cut Costs And Enhance Profitability With energy prices at an all-time high, in this issue, Neil Bland from new SPATA member Leisure Energy, discusses what facilities can do to reduce their costs and improve sustainability
A
s a nation, we have a diverse range of public leisure facilities that vary in age, management, size and condition but the one thing that they have in common is that they all use energy – and quite a lot of it too – especially those with swimming pools! Of the UK’s 5,000 public leisure centres, approximately 3,000 are 20 years old or more. As such, they are less energy efficient and emit significant carbon emissions due to their ageing heating and ventilation systems plus other associated plant. Energy is the second highest overhead for leisure centres. Today’s operators are dealing with an inflation-busting increase in utility costs as a result of the weaker pound, high global oil prices, higher delivery costs and increases to government environmental levies. Indeed, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy December 2018 report found that between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018 average industrial energy prices, including the CCL, rose in real terms by 24% for gas and by 10% for electricity. Couple this with increased staff costs and greater competition for the leisure pound, and you can see that it is all putting incredible pressure on the operator’s bottom line and can seriously threaten the viability of the sector. Leisure centres also produce a lot of carbon emissions and, if nothing else, we should be looking at ways to reduce these to protect our planet for future generations. The Carbon Trust reported in 2006 that if leisure centres were to reduce their energy consumption by 10%, this would result in a saving of more than £70m (£140m+ at today’s prices!). So how can operators reduce their carbon footprint and the impact of high energy costs? Here are a few suggestions: • Energy and carbon reduction need to be ‘driven’ and ‘owned’ by the MD/CEO of the organisation • Energy needs to be given the same priority as gym membership or swimming lesson income with monthly KPI reports to the board • Audit energy usage to know how much is spent and used • Look for the easy wins to reduce consumption – control and conserve • Talk to the landlord (the council in most cases) about plant replacement to help reduce carbon emissions and operational energy costs
36 April 2019 SPN 36_SPN_April_19_Leisure_Energy.indd 36
• Appoint an energy reduction company or an energy manager who can investigate energy conservation measures across the estate • Employ/use an energy procurement company to ensure the best possible price for energy • Train staff to be competent in reducing and monitoring usage. With so many emerging energy-saving technologies, it’s difficult for operators to be ahead of the game. Many choose to work with a specialist energy reduction company, who can monitor their energy usage and produce cost-effective and technologically advanced energy conservation solutions. Leisure Energy are industry experts in monitoring energy usage and producing cost-effective and technologically advanced energy conservation solutions bespoke for your sites with savings ranging from 20-50%. We also have considerable leisure management experience too and fully understand the sector. We provide a onestop service from the initial assessment of your energy performance to designing an energy-saving project. Once approval is given, Leisure Energy will project manage the installation under full CDM regulations
as Principal Designer and Contractor, finally training centre staff on completion. As capital investment is in short supply, Leisure Energy can provide a funding arrangement which enables the installation cost of new energy conservation measures to be spread over a fixed term period, and paid for from associated energy savings – there’s no need for any upfront payments. This allows for the operator/council to use their existing capital and energy revenue savings on customer-facing health and wellbeing initiatives. Additionally, Leisure Energy has a solution for energy procurement and can arrange competitive quotes for the leisure operator’s supplies based on a ‘risk managed basis’. This can guarantee budget certainty for up to three years in advance. Therefore, given the financial pressures that leisure operators are currently facing where it is difficult to increase revenue, it is still possible to reduce costs to enhance profitability. It really is the time to take energy reduction seriously and help save our planet in the process. Leisure Energy 07741 891711 www.leisure-energy.com

Annual Industry Awards Evening Provides A Night To Remember! People are still talking about the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the achievements of the many award-winners!
O
n Tuesday 29 January, the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards were held during the annual Industry Gala Dinner Evening at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry during SPATEX. The annual Gala Evening brings together the BISHTA and SPATA Awards in a joint event with the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards 2018. The Awards highlight the achievements of the respective members in the wet leisure industry, by showcasing the best examples of design, construction, installation and innovation. Year on year the presence of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is growing. Both BISHTA and SPATA have seen an increase in membership applications on the back of their publicity campaigns and with plans for a fresh new approach to the ‘Member Get Member’ promotion and ‘Members Plus’ initiative, there are even more great reasons to join the two associations. Another recent initiative is the ‘Buy by Brand’ route on the BISHTA website. BISHTA members have Hot Tub and Swim Spa brands which they sell, and many of these brands are ‘Full Members’ of BISHTA. Current full brand members are Artesian Spas, Caldera Spas, Catalina Spas, Clearwater Spas, Coast Spas, Dream Maker Spas, Elite Spas, Fantasy Spas, Hotspring Spas, Hydropool, Jacuzzi, Riviera Hot Tubs, RotoSpa, Spa Crest Europe, Terete Hot Tubs and Urban Cedar Hot Tubs. Consumers can now search through the Brand page and find the retailers that sell the brands they love. The annual Industry Gala Evening continues to provide not only the platform for the longest-established awards and networking event in the industry but also the UK’s most prestigious awards. The first SPATA awards were presented in 1978, and the first BISHTA awards were introduced
38 April 2019 SPN 38-39_SPN_April_19_Awards_Evening.indd 38
in 2008. The two award ceremonies were rebranded in 2015 into the current British Pool and Hot Tub Awards. Presenting the top awards on the night was special guest Charlie Matthews, from Wasps Rugby Football Club, based at the Ricoh Arena. Charlie’s towering presence as a 6ft 8in lock certainly provided a memorable set of images for the Award recipients! Welcomed by Toastmaster, Brian Sylvester, with Rob Malone comparing the British Pool and Hot Tub Award ceremony, the award winners were announced by Will Dando (BSPF President), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA Chairman) and Richard Carrington (SPATA Chairman) with help from this year’s award category sponsors. The event had a ‘Masquerade Ball’ theme and started with a drink’s reception, with the return of the ‘fun’ photo booth and a chance to have your photo taken by a professional photographer, with special guest Charlie Matthews both providing fantastic
mementoes of the evening. There followed a three-course dinner, awards presentations and then guests were entertained by a Queen Tribute band and then they were able to dance the night away until the early hours to the sounds provided by DJ James Penny. Open to everyone to attend; the Industry Gala Evening provides an exceptional opportunity for the whole industry to come together, offering a great social event for those exhibiting and/or visiting SPATEX. In business terms, it is a chance to network with industry peers both from home and overseas, where new contacts and business relationships can begin. Ultimately, the awards are an essential platform to showcase the best hot tubs, spas, swimming pools and wellness projects, raising the profile of the wet leisure industry (as a whole) at home and abroad, driving awareness for consumers and an exceptional opportunity to promote the awards far and wide. There is also the opportunity to be the UK representatives at the EUSA awards, with many of this year’s winners being shortlisted for the European Pool and Spa Awards 2019, to be held at aquanale in Cologne on Thursday 7 November. All the images of the award winners can also be viewed on the websites including the full gallery from the industry gala evening at www.bishta.co.uk and www.spata.co.uk. Online entry for the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards will open this summer and will close at the beginning of November 2019. Entry is open to members of BISHTA and SPATA, so if you have any queries about joining BISHTA/SPATA or entering the awards, please email admin@bishta.co.uk / admin@spata.co.uk or contact the office on 01264 356211/0. inners of the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards were revealed on 29 January at the annual wet leisure industry gala dinner evening, held during SPATEX at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Presenting the top awards on the night was special guest Charlie Matthews, from the Wasps Rugby Football Club who are based at the Ricoh Arena. Charlie’s towering presence as a 6ft 8in lock was a huge feature for the Award recipients!
The mission of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is to recognise the achievements of BISHTA and SPATA members, by showcasing the best examples of design, construction, installation and innovation. Entries are
received nationwide from members of each of the trade associations who together, set standards governing the installation, construction and operation of hot tubs, exercise spas, pools, spas, saunas and steam rooms. Along with establishing a Code of Ethics by which their members abide, the trade associations also give a voice to the industry both at home and abroad. With 30 award categories, the annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards reflects the variety of Residential Outdoor Pools Under £50,000 Mermaid Swimming Pools 01580 753031 www.mermaidpools.co.uk

Entering the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards also opens the door to Europe, as award-winning companies are eligible to be shortlisted for the European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations). Winning these awards shines a spotlight on the successful British companies, raising their profiles in the UK and across Europe. Chris Hayes (Managing Director of BISHTA and SPATA) commented: “The 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony showcased the fabulous quality of the members involved. These awards are an exceptional opportunity to celebrate the outstanding calibre of wet leisure businesses and the business people we have within the British Wet Leisure industry. It was a great

Many of the winners from this year’s awards will now have the chance to be shortlisted to compete in the European Pool and Spa Awards 2019, with the awards ceremony taking place at aquanale, in Cologne on Thursday 7 November 2019.” The awards evening takes place during
SPATEX, the UK’s largest dedicated Pool, Spa and Wellness Show; an event held annually in the Ericsson Exhibition Hall at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. SPATEX sees companies from across the UK and overseas exhibiting their products and services, plus it provides numerous opportunities to network with colleagues and plays host to a broad range of ‘must see’ workshops and seminars running throughout the duration of the show.

STA POOL PLANT – DIRTY POOLS
Dirty Pools Are A Danger To People’s Health Following the UK’s largest outbreak of the water-borne parasitic disease giardiasis at a swim school in York, Robbie Phillips, Pool Plant Consultant for STA, offers his expert advice on the topic and highlights the issues surrounding inadequate pool management, the risks to people’s health and why chlorination and filtration is so important
A
s evidenced in North Yorkshire, in addition to many more studies in the UK and US where outbreaks of giardiasis have occurred in swimming pools, the main factors are nearly always associated with filtration and both inadequate chlorination and monitoring of chlorine levels. Basically, inadequate pool management, dirty pools – operators not having the right systems and procedures in place to ensure the pool is cleaned and sterilised properly. This might be due to a combination of lack of knowledge, training or sheer ignorance – but this ignorance leads to dangerous situations. There is no excuse – ‘ignorance is no defence’. In my professional opinion, and having worked in the industry for more than 40 years (where I’ve seen the good and the bad) all pool plant operators (swimming pool owners) should be trained in: • Principles of healthy and hygienic pool water: The different types of pools, their users and uses. How to assist in maintaining healthy and hygienic pool water through bather hygiene and cleanliness in the pool environment. • Principles of water testing: The skills and knowledge to carry out regular water tests. Understand the variety of tests required, how to record the results and what actions to take for different results. • Principles of disinfection, pool chemistry and dosing in pool plant operations: Understanding of disinfection – both residual (primary) and non-residual (secondary). Pool chemistry such as breakpoint chlorination, the importance of pH in the disinfection process. The different chemicals used in pools and what role they play. The key principles in terms of dosing and dosing requirements of the different chemicals. • Principles of mechanical pool plant operations: The design considerations
and key features in the pool plant system. Circulation and working out maximum bather load, operational daily maximum bather load, circulation rate and turnover. Filtration features, the different parts of a filter and the importance of flocculation / coagulation. Backwashing requirements and the importance of dilution. Temperature recommendations for different pools and uses. • Swimming pool heating, ventilation and energy efficiency: The principles of heating and air circulation, the different systems to run an economic, energy efficient and effective pool plant. • Management practices and health and safety in pool plant operations: Management practices such as pool safety operating procedures (PSOPs) and training requirements. How to work safely with chemicals – risk assessments, control measures, personal protective equipment. Understanding of health & safety legislation / regulation operators should be aware of. Also, the maintenance procedures and timelines for effective operation of pool plant equipment. Ultimately, all of the information required to operate safe, hygienic and efficient pool facilities. Equally, if you are a swim school that is hiring a pool, we would also recommend basic pool plant training because it’s your reputation and business on the line. It is a fallacy to believe that the smaller the pool the less critical knowledge required. Busy swim schools based in small pools must be managed to the same national recommedations. Even if the pool plant and water quality is being managed by other parties you should always check basic critical parameters. Find out more about the training opportunities at www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk, including

details on the Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations which is the only qualification that currently meets CIMSPA’s new Pool Plant Operative Professional Standard, and to receive professional endorsement by the sector’s single chartered professional body. We all recognise that there is an inherent list of accepted risks involved with swimming pools, but as we keep saying, they can only be addressed by maintaining a well-managed plant and by ensuring correct procedures are followed by trained operators. After all, once the doors are opened to bathers, the pool owner and operator have a legal duty to provide a safe hygienic environment. And, if we take the swim school example in Yorkshire where 165 swimmers contracted giardiasis, we sadly only find out about the mis-management when something has gone wrong – after the event, when it is too late. WHAT IS GIARDIASIS?
Giardia are protozoan parasites that causes acute gastroenteritis, often which lasts up to two weeks; however, there are known cases that have lasted even longer. Chronic, long term infection with Giardia can also occur. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are single celled organisms (protozoans) that inhabit the human gut where they thrive and multiply. Part of their life cycle involves the formation of dormant eggs (known as Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts) and they have a protective shell which importantly are resistant to free chlorie (disinfectant). These oocysts are the mechanism for the transmission from one human host to another. The main symptoms are watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting, with flatulence and ‘eggy burps’. The net result is that any one suspected or confirmed as being infected should not swim until the infection has been eliminated.

irvana Spa – a multi-award winning pool and spa complex – is, quite simply, beautiful. Its facilities are beautiful, its architecture and interiors are beautiful, even its food is beautiful! However, behind the scenes and helping to keep Nirvana beautiful is the ‘beast’ – nine of them to be exact – in the form of Heatstar’s environmental control units. Sophisticated and advanced they may be but in terms of their power, efficiency and performance they are the big beasts of environmental control for commercial pool and spa complexes. Returning to the beautiful Nirvana Spa, this is one of only three spas in the UK with its own underground reservoir of pure water

feeding 16 individual water facilities such as a spa pool, relaxation pools, a fitness pool, a Celestial flotation pool and hot tubs with water clean and pure enough to drink. These fantastic water facilities have now been joined by the Colosseum Suite. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, this is a large circular pool situated within a round, two storey building which provides clients with two relaxation levels which overlook the central pool. Two of Heatstar’s climate control units (the Taurus HPXF 120 AS Super AR) have been installed behind the scenes. These ensure, in simple terms, that the ‘climate’ in the Colosseum Pool Suite is heated, circulated, dehumidified and constantly controlled at optimum levels

The units also ensure that the most energy efficient methods possible are also being utilised. Nirvana has been specifying Heatstar as their preferred supplier for all its environmental control needs for over ten years. Commenting on the relationship, Neil Phelps, Nirvana Spa’s Maintenance Director, said: “From the first unit supplied over ten years ago we have never looked back. Heatstar is our ‘go to’ company for all our air handling needs. Our decision is based on a good working relationship linked with consistently reliable, well-engineered products.”

SHOW REVIEW
SPATEX Delivers Despite Incorrect Weather Warnings
The water leisure industry from the UK and further afield converged on the UK’s Ricoh Arena for SPATEX at the end of January. Taking place for the sixth time at the Midlands venue, with plenty to see and do, the three-day Show looked set for a record year but exaggerated weather forecasts took the edge of a great looking event By Jon Wadeson
R
unning for the 23rd time, and known throughout Europe and further afield as the go-to Show for water leisure in the UK, SPATEX attracts all involved in the provision or operation of water leisure facilities. Installers, retailers, leisure operators, local authorities, hoteliers, architects and more – all know the value that the annual exhibition, complete with its comprehensive seminar programme offers, and as build up finished, the Show was brimming with an air of optimism and positivity. So it was a real shame that weather forecasts in the run up to the three-day event were increasingly predicting the worst possible weather for travelling to the Midlands showcase – particularly as it was exactly that – a prediction that largely never materialised, but one which did have an effect in the attendance of the show. After a switch in 2017, the three-day event runs midweek – inline with all the other major industry shows. With snow warnings putting the country on red alert, and with forecasts claiming conditions would worsen as the week progressed, it was no surprise that the Tuesday
of SPATEX was the busiest day. In fact, the Show’s organisers were rewarded for their efforts with a record opening day, with visitor numbers 5% up year on year. Over the duration of the event and despite the weather warnings, the Show recorded very respectable visitor numbers, which aligned very much with those of 2017. However, it’s not the quantity but the quality that is important and 2019 very much ticked the quality box. Both SPATEX with its new digital entrance graphics, along with the vast majority of exhibitors had pulled out the stops to make the Show as professional an event as possible. Plus the products on view combined with the free training resources that were available meant there was something for everyone who attended. As ever, the show provided a good platform to unveil new initiatives and products effectively to a large wet leisure audience, and the feedback was on the whole very positive. “This is our first year of exhibiting in our own right and it is definitely a Show we will be returning to in 2020,” said Melanie Killen of Recotherm.

125 top quality companies participated at SPATEX 2019, drawn from the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers. Thirty of those were making their Coventry debut and 28 spa related companies meant that despite there being more pools on display than ever before, the Show very much covered the wider wet leisure industry. “We have been in the industry for 17 years but this has been the first time that we have exhibited at SPATEX before. We used the Show as a platform to launch the Ikon spa and we have received a fantastic response,” said Anthony Schneikert of Spa Solutions. The strong presence of spa and hot tub related companies was a continuation from 2018 and their repeat attendance has well and truly put to bed the myth that SPATEX is only a swimming pool show. Of course, the type of visitors reflected the amount of hot tub and spa products present. “We had an excellent Show! Regardless of what the foot fall was after all the weather warnings not to travel, we consider that this year has been the most positive for us in respect of the
quality of consistent enquiries over the three days including a number of swimming pool installers that to date we have never supplied spas to,” said Darren Tillyer of GMT Spas International. In addition to the wide variety of exhibitors, SPATEX 2019 featured an impressive double seminar and Workshop programme which offered free education and training that is unmatched anywhere in the world. This is, in large, part thanks to the services of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), who each year stage three full days of highly informative workshops offering CPD points and certificates of attendance for all delegates. In Arena 1, all the traditional subjects were comprehensively covered. As with last year, Arena 2 hosted a parallel seminar programme which also covered a diverse number of subjects from a wide range of speakers. All the sessions across both Arenas were well-attended. The increasing thirst for knowledge and training from within the industry has helped to make the combination of the two varied programmes an

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS
Pool Lining Solutions For Fabulous Finishes
With liner pools still being the most popular type of swimming pool in the UK, there will always be a demand for a variety of lining solutions for both new build or refurbishment projects. For owners and installers, the good news is that the days of limited choice are well and truly in the past and an everexpanding offering of high quality and durable manufactured and on site options is providing more options than ever before, and in this issue, we take a closer look at what’s on offer By Andrea Hartshorne
A
fter a long summer last year, outdoor pool owners across the UK will be keeping their fingers crossed for a repeat performance or at the very least, a few months of being able to swim, relax and laze by the pool. But, after the disuse of the winter months, some owners will find that the spring sunshine reveals a pool that isn’t the pride and joy it once was. There are countless ways transform a swimming pool with a liner from an unsightly vision to welcoming oasis, but one of the simplest and most effective for both outdoor and indoor pools is the replacement of the liner. Each season, the quality and range of designs, colours, patterns and now textures that are available increases, meaning pool owners who wish to transform or renovate their pride and joy can do so quickly and at a relatively low cost. A superb solution for renovation projects and refurbishments, a pool lining whether produced in a factory or applied on site provides the capacity to give both new and used pools the chance to impress again. Regardless of size, style or aesthetic requirement, there’s sure to be a liner that ticks all the necessary boxes and we take a look at just some of the available options.
UK MANUFACTURED POOL LINERS FOR 43 YEARS
particular chosen pattern. Plastica Liners are produced at the UK’s largest swimming pool manufacturing facility. Their 10,000 sq.m. manufacturing plant is equipped with a state-of-the-art CAD system integrated with their computerised Plotter/ Cutters. They can also weld bespoke designs as well. The quality of their product is unrivalled, with a five year guarantee, their liners offer lasting beauty and durability. There are many benefits of choosing a Plastica liner. These include the fact that they are designed for use in all domestic pools with normal bathing loads and to be run at a maximum running temperature of 29°C. There is a five year pro-rata guarantee. The material is impregnated with algaecide and anti-oxidants and the patterned material has a protective lacquer coating. Tile bands are triple coated with lacquer to help prevent staining at the water line and liners come with an embossed serial number to identify liner measurements for future easy quotes when ordering a replacement liner and liner sample books are available on request. For those looking for a more durable liner, Plastica offer their Extreme Lining solution. Installed by their own fully trained fitters,
the Extreme Lining is perfect for complex shapes and designs, is stain, abrasion and scratch resistant and comes with a ten-year guarantee.
JEWEL-LIKE PEARL RANGE – A NEW TYPE OF LINER FROM AQUAFLEX Aquaflex is proud to provide the UK swimming pool industry with Alkorplan approved site lining teams to cover the ever growing commercial and domestic swimming pool market. Site lining is the perfect solution for non-uniform shaped pools and offers a cost effective solution compared to other finishes such as ceramic tiles. With an expanding range of 1.5 and 2.0mm site lining patterns, customers have a variety of choices ranging from natural and ceramic embossed designs to conventional standard patterns used widely in the commercial market. In 2018 Aquaflex quietly introduced a new type of patterned liner material. ‘Mosaic Wave’ was the first of the exciting new Pearl range of patterns and has proved to be so popular that they have expanded the range for 2019 to three glistening patterns. Plastica have been an established liner manufacturer since 1976 – no other UK liner producer has their wealth of experience. They individually tailor every liner to each customers’ dimensions – no matter what shape or size of pool. Available in 0.50mm, 0.75mm and other thicknesses, they have a huge range of liner patterns from the ever-popular Classic Marble and Mosaic liners, to the contemporary Delphos and Ibiza Blue patterns. They also offer a selection of different coloured beading, other than white, to complement the choice of liner. As standard, Plastica will select the colour that best matches the

A superb solution for renovation projects and refurbishments, a pool lining whether produced in a factory or applied on site provides the capacity to give both new and used pools the chance to impress again” Pearl range provides a gleaming shimmering effect, using specially formulated pearl effect pigments. These reflect the light in unpredictable ways, giving a sparkling character to the whole pool. The Pearl liners provide a timeless jewellike effect being the perfect answer for those seeking to add an element of drama and brilliance to their swimming pool environment. ‘Butterfly Blue’ and ‘Butterfly Grey’ complement ‘Mosaic Wave’ to bring the Pearl Range together as the most enticing new range of patterns for swimming pool liners to arrive for many years. Aquaflex also produces .750mm pretailored liners in their 22,000 square foot factory in Salisbury, Wiltshire where they have a strong reputation for complex designs and non-conventional steps and features. With a design team that has the skill and the experience to incorporate new, revolutionary designs, they strive to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with a pre-tailored liner. Whether a pool is a new build or a renovation, Aquaflex has the knowledge to find the perfect lining solution for any project.

CERTIKIN’S EMBOSSED LINERS OFFER NATURAL LOOKS AND FEEL New for April 2019 Certikin is introducing the new Embossed 30 thou bag liner material that is as beautiful as it is functional. Part of the Contemporary range, it gives the pool a look and feel of natural slate or pebble. Designed for both new build and refurbishment projects, as one of the UK’s leading liner suppliers, Certikin International has an ever-expanding portfolio of high quality, durable options. “Whist most of the traditional classics are still available, the introduction of vibrant colours, photographic printing, metallic and pearlescent finishes to spread light around the pool and engraved finishes that offer a natural stone look and ‘touch,’ mean that the finished look to a pool can be unique, classical, dramatic or plain and simple. This explosion in options is not only restricted to factory made liner component materials, as used to be the case, but has extended into commercial grade materials,” said Certikin Product Manager, Craig Williamson. As opposed to the traditional single ply 0.75mm vinyl used for factory made liners, site applied linings, such as Certikin’s Infinite range, use a 1.5mm – 2mm three
ply product. This is manufactured from two layers of high quality swimming pool grade vinyl which encapsulate a woven scrim, to offer prolonged strength and durability. This makes it ideal for heavy use commercial environments and also extra long lasting in a standard domestic environment. Certikin maximise the opportunities to pass on these benefits to installers and pool owners by sourcing pool vinyl for both factory made liners and the Infinite On-Site applied liner from three of the
CASE STUDY ALKORPLAN TOUCH – THE SOLUTION FOR COMPLEX POOL When it comes to complex designs and intricate detail, site lining with PVC might not be the immediate thought. However, with site lining increasing in popularity within commercial and domestic markets, more patterns are now available and the skills of the installers are developing to meet the highest standards. When H2O of Exeter contacted Aquaflex with an exciting opportunity to line a freeform pool which featured beach entry, steps and integrated benches, Aquaflex were confident their site lining service would offer the perfect finish. Using Alkorplan ‘Touch’ authentic reinforced PVC which meets anti-slip regulations, this pattern choice was perfect for the beach entry and complemented the idyllic location. H2O prepared the pool prior to Aquaflex’s arrival, which included pressure testing the pipework, converting the concrete type fittings to be suitable for a PVC membrane and addressing any imperfections. On Aquaflex’s arrival the team fixed

PVC coated steel profile underneath the coping stones. The metal profile allows the installation team to weld the reinforced PVC to its coating causing the liner to ‘hang’ in the same way a pre-tailored liner is installed. This offers a ‘seamless finish’ and is an alternative to beading and liner lock. The base and walls were then covered in felt to create a barrier between the PVC and the concrete substrate. The sloping walls, steps and benches were then installed with the team tailoring the material and fixing to the metal profile. Once these areas were complete Aquaflex installed the base and then covered all edges with liquid PVC to ensure a perfect finish. H2O 01392 413150 www.experienceh2o.co.uk

CASE STUDY CERAMIC TILE EFFECT LINING PERFECT FOR KENT POOL Plastica’s Extreme On site Lining teams have got off to a busy start again this year and recently completed this outdoor pool for North Kent-based M Clark Swimming Pools. The customer wanted a replacement liner that would give the pool a ‘lift’ and to complement the landscaping around the pool surround and garden. With this in
mind, Plastica’s Ceramic effect range of patterns – available in Grey, Black, Blue and Terracotta – became an obvious choice. The material is 2mm thick and once installed it is very difficult to differentiate between a lined and a traditional tiled pool. A Ceramic effect liner was chosen and Plastica installed and completed the job in just over three days. Both the end customer and Martin Clark were
delighted with the finished job. Plastica’s Extreme & Service Manager, Pat Devaney said: “We have found that once a customer has had an Extreme On site liner fitted – in any of our designs – they prefer it to a standard bag liner.” On site lining is ideal for pools with complex shapes and designs because the material is brought to site, then cut and welded directly for a perfect fit. Entry steps can also be built into a standard block and liner pool. Plastica also offer a non-slip liner for step treads, diving blocks and shallow areas, in light blue or white. This material is an ideal solution particularly for holiday parks and sports centres that may have a learner pool or facilities that needs good slip resistance. The One-piece Pools Package
Synonymous with luxury, precision-crafted and technologically cutting-edge products, NIVEKO pools are available to the UK trade through Certikin International
Improved production techniques combined with quality materials plus the huge benefit of being able to be installed in a matter of days rather than weeks means that for many, one-piece pools are the perfect solution for a hassle-free pool build experience. emand for one-piece pools in the UK has exploded over recent years and their popularity can be put down to a winning combination of factors. These include: greats looks, quick delivery, relatively straightforward installation, low ongoing maintenance costs, competitive pricing and some fantastic warranties. With plumbing, fittings and equipment in place and ready to go direct from the factory, they cause the minimum amount of fuss and disruption during installation – a factor that shouldn’t be under estimated. If time really is money, it’s no great surprise that both owners and installers are increasingly embracing them as a hassle-free and cost-effective option. Of course, peace of mind has also played its part with the majority of concerns from yesteryear having been addressed with improved durabilty and reliability backed up

with impressive warranties. There’s also now a huge range of finishing options too so in short, it’s difficult to see any downside to these one-piece wonders which can often last up to 50 years. Even access challenges are rarely an issue thanks to an array of creative delivery methods and options to split the pool and join it again on site. In short, one-piece pools provide an impressive and hard to ignore package of benefits versus other more traditional pool options and for many, it’s a package that’s just too tempting to ignore. Over recent years, a number of new brands have entered the UK market – some have failed to gain traction but others have been successful – and each hopes to enjoy some of the action within what appears to be a buoyant sector. With new entrants comes
more choice and in this issue, we discover what’s on offer in the one-piece pools sector.

NIVEKO POOL COMPLEMENTS HOME’S MINIMALIST STYLE
This modern home, in its picturesque setting in the north of Switzerland, is an oasis of peace and quiet for its owners – a young family – and is a place to relax from life’s day-to-day stress. Here, less is definitely more. The house and garden feature clean, straight lines, formed from an interesting combination of materials such as wood, glass, metal, stone and more. Outside, the timeless look is perfectly complemented and enhanced by a NIVEKO Evolution pool. The design of this overflow pool is characterised by the minimalist style of the pool edge. This creates the impression of a continuous surface between the water and the surroundings of the pool. The grey colour of the pool looks very natural combined with the stainless steel fittings, giving the water an amazing blue tint. The steps in the corner of the pool were also chosen for their simple lines, and the first step can be used as a place to relax. The

pool is also fitted with a slatted cover, which provides heat insulation as well as preventing the water from evaporating from the pool. Everything in this garden has its place,

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS Bosta UK have now broadened their range of one-piece pools even further to include a ceramic layering range which allows for longer life pool shells
Made in the UK – the Sunquest 36 is Sunquest Pools’ largest model and features a deep and shallow end
Pools combines over 20 years’ unparalleled customer service and in-depth pool industry knowledge with one of the highest quality products available on the market. The company’s standard model is the Hydro 624 – a 6 metre x 2.4 metre pool that was added to the Sunquest range in 2018. Designed to be installed with an integrated counter-current, this is an exercise pool that is easily installed indoors. The Hydro 624 can be produced in custom lengths thanks to CNC manufactured moulding and building to order means that Sunquest Pools can offer a broad range of configurations, colour and finish options. For example, the standard pool colour is light blue, but Sunquest can supply pools in virtually any RAL colour. Also, all pools come with a standard step arrangement but the company can manufacture therapy and training pools with steps removed, with hydrotherapy benches and with different step configurations. A unique model the company can provide is also the largest model they supply. The Sunquest 36 measures 11m by 4.3m and features a deep and shallow end plus integral corner entry steps for maximum swim space. The underwater light, return jets and skimmer are all built-in to the Sunquest 36. Also supplied in the package are the sand filter and circulation pump, pool cleaning equipment with test kit and thermometer. The Sunquest 36 can be designed and manufactured to include an integral roller pit for housing a slatted pool cover seamlessly, and this model has proven particularly popular amongst both trade and retail customers for over a decade. Short lead times are standard with all Sunquest pools, as well as competitive,

consistent price structures – both key benefits of choosing UK production over an import.
DEMAND LEADS TO AN EXPANDED RANGE FROM BOSTA UK 2017 was Bosta UK’s first year of offering fibreglass pools and with complete kit pricing which makes swimming pools more affordable, the company has seen a huge increase in demand for them over the last couple of years. Both pool installers and consumers were excited about the possibilities given to them using fibreglass and the manufacturing methods and product range continues to expand. In 2018 Bosta increased the range of pool shapes and sizes giving more choice to their customers. Available up to 10 metres in length, all come complete with built in steps, a superior finish and in metallic colours unavailable with liner pools. Bosta UK have now broadened their range of one-piece pools even further to include a ceramic layering range which allows for longer life pool shells. A 15 year construction and seven year anti-osmosis finish, alongside the polyurethane foam insulation as standard, ensures an exceptional quality pool with unrivalled retail prices. The pools also come with an integral steel support structure allowing for easier backfill and installation than their polypropylene pool counterparts.
The ceramic pools are available in varying sizes from 7.5 metres up to 8.4 metres with different built-in step designs. All Bosta UK pools can be supplied with a full filtration kit, including filtration, lighting and heating, and are inclusive of delivery. As well as the pool kit supplied, a number of Bosta’s customers have also looked to install a variety of upgrades including swimjets which can help turn a 5 metre pool into a full exercise pool at very little additional cost. Bosta have a range of upgrade options that their customers can offer to tailor make a package to suit every individual’s needs.
A SOLID FEEL WITH LEISURE POOLS’ COMPOSITE ARMOUR™ TECHNOLOGY Leisure Pools has never been satisfied with just building a good swimming pool. ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS Although traditional fibreglass pools provide the feature of flexibility, they also have the weakness of not feeling solid under foot as the pool shell is designed to flex. Leisure Pools, through its Composite Armour™ Step Technology™, has been able to reduce step and bench deflection providing a ‘solid’ foundation for entry and exit steps compared with normally constructed fibreglass pools. The Composite Armour™ Step Technology™ provides the customer with a feeling of a solid foundation whilst still maintaining the many benefits of structural flexibility in the design of the swimming pool shell. This patented technology is designed to significantly reinforce the composite swimming pool with a strategically integrated laminate that consists of a blend of DuPont™ Kevlar®, Carbon Fibre and Basalt Fibre. By using Composite Armour™ in the pool shell laminate, Leisure Pools have been able to achieve tremendous improvement in flexural and tensile strength compared with traditionally constructed fibreglass pools. In 2018, new options were added to the Leisure Pools range including The Paradise, a constant depth model with wide bench seat and entry steps and The Precision a highlevel flat bottom pool with splash decks. The complete range currently stands at 11 models – each with several sizes to suit a variety of needs – and all are available on a nationwide basis from Easy Pools.
NIVEKO – ONE-PIECE POOLS THAT MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE Synonymous with luxury, precision-crafted and technologically cutting-edge products, NIVEKO pools are available to the UK trade through Certikin International. The main advantage of the company’s products is that they combine the benefits
Easy Pools supply 11 models from the Leisure Pools range which includes the Reflection model with built-in housing for an automated pool cover
of one-piece pools and those of custommade ‘concrete’ options. These custom built monopools are not limited in terms of their shape, the type of pool technology (skimmer or overflow), size or design. Every pool is designed to suit each customer’s individual requirements and the main aim is to find the right combination of functionality, unique design and timeless technology. This ensures expectations are met both now and in the future. The pools are delivered directly in one piece from NIVEKO’s production facility. Built-in components such as jets, lights and counter-current are installed during the production process and are subjected to pressure tests. If the pool is too large to be transported in one piece, the pre-prepared pool parts are assembled by a team of professionals at the customer’s site in just two days.
With the current trend for pools featuring clean, rectangular lines, design elements now play an ever more important role. Therefore, the NIVEKO portfolio includes products such as unique step shapes – the minimalist ‘floating’ Apollo steps, where the steps are built directly into the pool wall, or the robust Milano steps, which can be moved across the width of the pool. Many customers are regularly showing an interest in pools with water filtration overflow technology. One crucial advantage of this technology is that it is now so advanced, it ensures that the surface of the pool is cleaned as effectively, evenly and quickly as possible. As a result of this trend, NIVEKO offer five types of overflow troughs, plus a combination of these based on a customer’s individual needs. Overflows with natural and Greek stone, or even with unusual artificial stone are all possible.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS
The Secret’s Out... Clever Cover-ups Are Key Pool Essentials Increasingly seen as an essential rather than a luxury, the introduction of a pool cover is an obvious and logical step to help owners save money and make pool ownership ‘greener’. Automatic covers go a step further by providing a stylish and labour saving solution with the additional benefit of built-in safety. With further innovations in the sector, there’s now more choice than ever and we take a closer look at what’s on offer in 2019 By Karen Witney
N
ot all cover-ups are the kind that conjure up shady characters whispering in dark corners (or in the House of Commons!). Some are positively welcome, particularly when it comes to pool cover-ups. Designed to make life easier for the pool owner or operator and at the same time improving water quality, is it any wonder that automatic pool covers are becoming de rigueur in both the commercial and domestic market. These covers are as varied as they are dependable with manufacturers constantly seeking ways to improve both in quality and operation. And, as you will see from the companies featured, that is no secret!
AL FRESCO POOLS UNIQUE COVERSEAL TECHNOLOGY Coverseal’s unique flexible cover stays tensioned at all times. Its design is based on the combination of an innovative material and the protection of a number of patents, allowing it to operate by simultaneously extending and sealing the membrane. The choice of material is a PVC membrane from the Serge Ferrari Precontraint range. Dimensionally stable and tear-resistant, the membrane can also withstand various forms
of potential damage, such as pollution and UV rays. Coverseal’s energy efficiency provides water that’s always warmer. Once the Coverseal cover is closed, it does not come into contact with the water in the pool and forms a cushion of air that envelops and protects the pool. It acts as a heat shield stretched above the pool, which is cooler (especially at night time, when the temperature difference is increased). Around the clock protection means that: • During daytime... Coverseal stops the water cooling down by preventing contact with the breeze • During night time... Coverseal stops the surface water cooling down in contact with colder air. The heat from solar energy stored during the day is retained, so you can take a dip in the evening or first thing in the morning • Anytime... Coverseal limits evaporation, providing a simple, environmentally friendly way to maintain the water level in the pool and control the various maintenance parameters and pH. Coverseal is equally at home over an indoor pool. According to the manufacturer, no Al-Fresco’s Coverseal automatic pool cover is wrinkle free due to its patented ability to operate by simultaneously extending and sealing the membrane

other flexible cover limits evaporation to the same degree as the Coverseal airtight cover – specially designed to keep the membrane properly tensioned and sealed, it is the ideal solution for indoor pools.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS 12m x 6m and comes with an in-roller motor. The Roldeck is ideal for domestic or commercial applications and both outdoor or indoor and is extremely versatile. Roldecks are the ultimate in heat insulation, evaporation control, durability and of course aesthetic appearance. Highly versatile, a Roldeck can be made to measure for almost any new or existing pool with the coiling mechanism installed above or below ground or in the pool itself. In the case of above-ground installation, the protective roller cover can be reinforced to create a bench seat. Roldeck’s standard PVC 50mm wide slats come in white, blue, cream, grey, solar and transparent (with a slight blue tint). The solar model, with a black base, collects heat from the sun and transfers it directly into the water, greatly reducing heating costs. The translucent slats provide customers with the ability to appreciate under water lighting whilst maintaining the benefits of having the pool fully covered. The polycarbonate 60mm wide slats are available in Solar, Crystal Clear or Aluminium-Looking and are proving extremely popular since they were introduced a couple of years ago. Roldeck can also supply foam filled slats (Proflex) in ivory, cream, grey and blue.

The company’s over-coping Dripool ‘H’ and CV systems use powerful hydraulic drives and incorporate blowers (if required) allowing Dripool to cover both new and existing freeform and level deck pools up to 30

metres long by 10 metres wide. One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements. In 2019 Dripool are offering what they feel to be the best trade incentives with the currently running Autosafe housing promotion. Understanding the difficulties and costs involved in finishing the cover chamber to ensure it remains both aesthetically pleasing and functional, the decision was made to include all the required brackets, plates and access trays needed to create a rigid platform, completely free of charge. This allows the area to be coped and paved in unison with the other three sides of the pool whilst ensuring the strength to jump and dive from atop the cover chamber.

DRIVE DOWN COSTS AND DRIVE UP FREE SOLAR ENERGY WITH COVREX® Available from Fairlocks Pool Products, the Covrex® Solar automatic swimming pool cover boasts new and improved technology to drive down associated costs of swimming pool ownership and drive up energy efficiencies. The new polycarbonate slats are extremely durable due to a special structure, have a top-class performance and come in a sleek design. Installing a Covrex® Solar on a newly built or existing pool leads to substantial savings in terms of heating costs, use of chemical products and maintenance. The thermal specifications of the Covrex® Solar covers increases the heat conductivity from the sun to the water, decreases the pool water evaporation, allows important heat savings and diminishes the use of chemicals. All in all, the Covrex® Solar guarantees a durable and economic heating solution for the pool. The Covrex® Solar+ is a polycarbonate slat with a Silver finish. Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer with remarkable characteristics which are very important for use with a pool. The Silver finishing touch is directly added during the extrusion process, which ensures that the Covrex® Solar+ slats won’t lose their colour over the years. The anti-algae structure of the slats directly integrated in the slat profile will make sure the cover stays clean for a longer period too. Its specific structure will prevent UV sun rays entering the hollow chambers, and hence reduce the speed of algae creation. A simple blast with a high-pressure jet hose will ensure any algae or dirt are washed away quickly and easily. The Silver finishing of the product also makes condensation inside the slats almost invisible. Contrary to traditional solar slats, the innovative structure of the Covrex® Solar slat reduces the visibility of condensation. The solar innovation ensure that pool owners are not spending additional costs on heating the pool when the sun’s rays can do it for them.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS POOLLOCK PROVIDES A SOLID AND SAFE BARRIER With over 30 years of experience, and installations in over 20 countries, PoolLock is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of automatic safety and slatted covers for swimming pools. The company’s unique hydraulic-drive system means there is no need for any electrical components near the pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required. Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, which means that the cover (and the pool) are actually used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water. In addition, all PoolLock covers reduce the amount of heat, water and chemicals lost through evaporation, therefore saving pool owners money on both electricity and chemical usage. In addition to the standard fabric options, PoolLock also offers HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of three when compared to standard fabrics for similar applications. HeatLock’s closedcell foam structure ensure that the company’s covers are not only the safest, but also the most energy-efficient available on the market. PoolLock Automatic Covers offer pool owners some of the safest, most convenient, most reliable and energy-efficient ways to cover a pool.
GOLDEN COAST ANNOUNCE AN EXCITING NEW ADDITION TO THE DEL RANGE The eagerly awaited DEL Contura slatted cover – successor to the popular Dune series – has been officially launched to the UK
PoolLocks new HeatLock thermofoam canvas material has advanced insulation properties and as this pool demonstrates, is aesthetically pleasing too
market. Available exclusively from national distributors Golden Coast, the versatile and durable cover is ideal for new build or pool refurbishment projects for pools up to 9m x 18m. Manufactured from aluminium and finished in metallic grey, the stylish bracket design offers exceptional resistance to impacts, scratches and UV light. Importantly, it supports the weight of the tube, avoiding excess load on the motor which can easily be uncoupled and removed without disturbing the tube itself. Covers are manufactured from either PVC or solar polycarbonate slats, which are available in a range of colours to match the environment. Tested to hold up to 100kg in weight, the cover can be locked at both ends using the Pushlock system to secure the pool completely. Featuring a powerful tubular motor, the Contura is available with electric or solarpowered options. It can be operated manually by a key switch button or remotely via a password-protected Wi-Key wireless control.
Announcing the launch, Luke Honnoraty, Technical Sales at Golden Coast said: “The Contura has already generated a huge amount of interest. It’s manufactured to the same high standard as all DEL products and is exactly what customers are looking for: straightforward installation, attractive design, the latest features and a safe pool environment, especially for small children.”

OASE ADD TO THEIR SLAT PORTFOLIO IN 2019 Automatic pool cover specialist OASE is emphasising its high-end and sustainable solutions for covering indoor and outdoor

swimming pools. The company highlights the fact that its covers are custom-made, economical and can reduce heating costs by a claimed 80%. OASE has invested heavily in research and development during its 51 years of existence and their covers are delivered worldwide to more than 30 countries and offers more than 20 different polycarbonate slats and more than 15 different PVC-slats. New for 2019 OASE announced a new triextrusion layer profile of 66.7mm width – the lumi-solar® slat. Equipped with an anti-algae hinge, the lumi-solar® slat offers superb UV resistance thanks to an additional layer of UV protection. The patent pending design of the new profile keeps light from the hinge and prevents algae. In addition, previous solar slats had to be made with a black underside, but the the lumi-solar® profiles are now transparent. Transparent solar slats provide a more efficient solar effect. Exposed to the sun, the air heats up in the hollow space within the slat profile. This heat then warms up the water underneath in the swimming
CASE STUDY MULTIPLE COVERS ARE THE SOLUTION FOR UNIQUE PROJECT Pools come in a variety of shapes and sizes but those of a unique shape or design, often require specific and tailor-made solutions. To cover the surface area on this very particular design of swimming pool, PoolLock supplied one automatic slatted cover and three automatic safety covers, including a customized V4XXL safety cover system spanning an 11m width. Thanks to its many years of experience designing and producing automatic covers, PoolLock is able to work with customers and architects to create tailored solutions to cover almost any kind of pool and this project, whilst somewhat of a challenge, proved to be no different.

There was an L-shaped part of the pool where the company installed two automatic safety covers that met in the middle of the pool (to cover the full L-shape). PoolLock used the automatic slatted cover on the internal part of the pool where skilled technicians were needed to provide two cut-outs to
accommodate the columns that protruded into the pool area. A discreet handrail was then installed below the water level as an additional safety feature. Finally, the last single automatic safety cover was used to cover the remaining indoor part of the pool. The final result provided total and secure coverage of the pool in what was a fairly distinctive challenge – one which PoolLock took happily and cleverly dealt with.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS pool – much like a greenhouse. The results of tests during last summer showed that the performance of heating up the water was an increase of 30-40%. With the use of transparent solar slats, owners can still enjoy the lights in the swimming pool too. The solar transparent slats give a more modern touch and add to the design of any pool. The lumi-solar® slat is currently available in two standard colours – Vived Aqua and Cristal Clear. To promote these new slats, customers will receive a quality bottle of Cava, whenever they buy or publicise the new OASE LumiSolar® slats.
Rollo Solar automatic pool cover from Lighthouse Pools provides housing designs that offer answers to most, if not all, in-pool cover housing designs
A HIGH QUALITY SOLUTION – ROLLO SOLAR FROM LIGHTHOUSE Available through Lighthouse, Rollo Solar is one of the highest quality slatted cover systems on the market today. Rollo Solar are experts in the field of slatted covers. The stainless steel brackets and accessory design and manufacture are second to none. With its own design tubular motor system installed within the roller shaft, specifically designed and built in house, it features slats that push the profile to a new level of excellence. Housing designs for any pool, above-ground or in-pool are available. Pit exit rollers, reduce damage to the top of the slats whilst they exit cave pits. Stainless steel frames are designed for easy access, whether the wall is tiled, brushed stainless finish or a clean coloured PVC. Rollo Solar offer answers to most, if not all, in-pool cover housing designs. Rollo Solar slats are truly some of the best on the market and their design features prove this. The thing that stands out is that the slat profile is curved, offering better roll dimensions and more secure storage on the roller shaft. This in turn allows for longer end sections to be achieved on the roll. The slat also has been modified along the back edge, a curved rib has been added into the slat’s design giving a fourth air chamber. Not only does this increase the
buoyancy of the slat but helps reduce the dirt and debris build up along this edge. By sealing off this edge, the top of the slat remains clean and algae is no longer trapped and able to grow. Finally thanks to state-of-the-art welding technology the end caps are given a crystal clear finish. Thus removing the need for ugly silicone plug joints.

The control box with user-friendly LCD screen has several programmable in- and outputs, ‘plug-and-play’ remote control, adjustable speed control and it can be connected to the pool control or house automation system. The ‘premium clean profile’ is a swimming pool cover profile combining all the advantages a customer could ask for. It is available in solar and aluminium look, hail resistant up to 40mm and its shape and design limit algae growth and calcification. As the profile has four air sealed chambers, it offers an increased safety (higher buoyancy) and better insulation. The premium clean profile meets the French safety standard NF P90-308.

OPINION
‘There Is No ‘I’ In Team’ – Well, Do You Know What, I Rather Think There Is ‘Good team player’, ‘Works well in a team’ – everyone’s CV is full of how important team work is in business these days but does it really work the way we think it does? Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explores the concept of teamwork
‘EVERYONE LINE UP AGAINST THE WALL…’ I was introduced to the concept of ‘team’ through playing sports at primary school. Football probably, but we might have played a non-lethal version of dodge-ball as well. The ideas of team hierarchy, entry qualifications and the blame culture were already being established. The teams were led by the boys who had the best skills in the task in question – they were good at kicking the ball – but may not have been so great at motivating or indeed managing their team. In picking their side, they simply chose their mates in descending order from ‘best mate’ down until the only two kids left were the two that no one wanted. Sometimes this was such a sticking point that the teacher had to allocate their red or green armband. Oh, the shame of it. Once the game was under way, it was pretty much every boy for themselves. No one passed the ball; there was no clear game plan but, if you made a mistake, then every other member of the team was very happy to point out your failings in the clearest possible language and bang went your chances for being picked next week. Oh, and ‘team’ was obviously a single-sex thing. Girls playing football? Duh.
TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE A good few years down the track and it seems that very few aspects of business generate as many inspirational sayings as the idea of teamwork but why is that? Like most things, there is a good and a bad side to how businesses and managers look at a team and the people within it. Sad to say, some of them confuse a team with a herd, or a flock. The motivational quotes they litter their memos with are like sheepdogs trying to keep the group together. ‘Get with the programme’ or perhaps even,
‘Shape up or ship out’. And definitely, ‘There is no ‘I’ in team’. But that’s just paying lip service to the idea of ‘team’ and missing out on the benefits it can bring for a business and the people who work in that business, the people who make up that team. Someone once told me that most businesses don’t actually want a team, they don’t want to go through the huge effort that building a strong, effective team requires. All they actually want is a bunch of people who can just about stand the thought of working together. Sadly, I think that is sometimes true.
#TEAMGC A couple of years ago we started posting tweets from SPATEX with the hashtag TeamGC and I thought, do you know what, we really are. It’s something we’re proud of and benefits not just our customers but ourselves as well. We are regularly giving out Long Service awards to our staff; people like working here. We don’t communicate internally by email; if you want to ask someone something, walk around to their desk and ask them. We share a team spirit; a much loved team member
They are all ‘I’s, people with their own unique skills and abilities. You need strong individuals to make a strong team and that, I think, is a point that is often missed” 84 April 2019 SPN 88_SPN_April_19_Opinion.indd 84
died of cancer a few years ago; we still have ‘Pink Friday’ to remember them. And we respect each other. Warehouse staff and technical support, sales team, finance and office management. We all have different skills and it’s the combination of those skills that makes us what we are. There are 33 ‘I’s in this team and that’s a good thing.
‘AND THEY’RE COMING OUT ONTO THE PITCH NOW…’ You can’t talk about ‘team’ for long before football and rugby, hockey and whatever else pitch up. Perhaps the sporting analogy is so strong because watching a team game brings all the principles of teamwork together and shows them in a dynamic and graphic way. You can see that people work together and support each other if any one member gets into trouble. You can see that they have a common goal that they all clearly understand and have agreed to work towards. You can see them communicate with each other and you can see the captain is on the pitch leading his or her team, not managing it. And you can see that they are all individuals. They are all ‘I’s, people with their own unique skills and abilities. You need strong individuals to make a strong team and that, I think, is a point that is often missed.
