As the school holidays draw to a close, so too does the summer season for our industry. Despite it not being a particularly great one weather wise, it’s still been an extremely busy period with many companies on the supply side struggling to keep up with the increased level of orders that the pandemic and lack of overseas travel has caused.
We’ve also an in depth look at the latest efficient and environmentally friendly heat pumps that are on the market – products that will definitely take the chill out of the water on the overcast days that we’re all so used to in the UK. Coming inside from the cold, dehumidification and ventilation is also featured as we take a closer look at some of the solutions that are able to provide a breath of fresh air to pool hall spaces across the land. One sector that has changed enormously over recent years is lighting and we take a look at a number of the latest products which are delivering some truly stunning results to wet leisure environments. The appeal of stainless steel is also focused on again as we look at pools, spas and accessories that are utilising the benefits of this timeless material that is also both remarkably flexible and durable too.
COVID-19 has certainly elevated the importance of many sectors in the minds of the British public and wet leisure, along with many other home or garden based products, has been thrust to the top of the pile, benefitting greatly from these extraordinary times. How long this momentum continues for remains to be seen. After all, at this stage, what next year brings is anybody’s guess. Regular overseas holidays still seem some way off and looking at news reports, resorts up and down the country have been packed with many families trying to make the most of what’s on offer in the UK.
If that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams touches on the subject of climate change and the connection to our industry, we’ve a piece which focuses on Plastica’s upgraded water treatment department, and the STA highlight the ever-present dangers of suction entrapment and hair entanglement.
I’m certain of one thing though, and that is that large parts of our industry are now looking forward to somewhat quieter times and a chance to draw breath, take stock and dare I say it, even relax a little after what has been a full on eighteen months or so for most of us that operate in the various wet leisure sectors.
So, with a wide mix of subjects covered, hopefully we’ve provided a bit of something for everyone in this latest issue of SPN. I hope you enjoy reading it and stay safe in the coming months.
With more people than ever owning or using pools and spas across the country, water-based hygiene – perhaps more so than ever – needs to be at the forefront of people’s minds, so it is appropriate that in this issue we have an in depth look at the
There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus the British entries shortlisted for the 2021 European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA are revealed. In addition, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad.

Delta Is At The Heart Of This Lockdown Pool No, not the Covid Delta variant, but the Calorex Delta! Built over the course of six months and completed last autumn by Huddersfield-based pool designer and builder, Concept Pools, this purpose-built pool hall in Sutton Coldfield was in construction during the first lockdown but completed in time for the second lockdown, proving a ‘godsend’ for keeping the owners and their family amused. Given the brief to build a pool and spa for family exercise and fun, Concept Pools installed a 14m x 5.5m x 1.4m level deck pool with a constant depth of 1.7m and added a 2.5m GRP tiled integrated spa pool. Taking full control of the whole indoor environment and pool water heating, is a Calorex Delta 4. Totally self-contained, the Delta removes moisture and recovers energy which is then re-used to heat the pool water and air. Typically, for every unit of power that a Calorex heat pump consumes, it will convert 2.4 times this amount to usable heat. Compared to traditional heating and ventilation methods, cost savings of over 50% are achievable while corresponding CO2 emissions can be dramatically reduced by as much as 70%. For the most part, the Concept Pools’ team managed to continue working throughout the two lockdowns but as a lot of pool contractors found,
commercial work inevitably dried up, whilst enquiries from the domestic sector rocketed, fuelled by a public intent on pursuing health and wellness in the safety of their own homes. Other featured Certikin equipment includes a tiled spa and a Roldeck white slatted automatic cover.

the exterior works have been completed and each fitness area has been kitted out with the latest equipment. In addition to a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities, on the wet leisure side, the Eastwood Centre features a 25 metre pool with 68-seat viewing gallery, a teaching pool with moveable floor and hoist, a steam room and sauna. For parents who are getting their children into swimming, a new ground level café provides a view of the teaching pool. During his time as a councillor, Ian Eastwood campaigned passionately for better sports facilities in Sheerwater, alongside Cllr David Bittleston, Lead Member of the Sheerwater Regeneration Project. In April 2018, members voted to release the funds for the construction of new community-use leisure centre and swimming pool, and two months after Mr Eastwood’s retirement in May 2019, work started on site. During a recent visit to the leisure centre, Mr Eastwood said he was “very impressed with the finer details” and praised the quality of the facilities, which meet the required standards for a range of competitive sports.

IN BRIEF ELEVATE ORGANISERS POSTPONE EVENT UNTIL 2022 Organisers of the annual Elevate show, which takes place at London’s ExCel venue, have announced that due to the delayed easing of the final stage of restrictions, their 2021 edition which was scheduled to take place in September, will now run on the 15 and 16 of June 2022. A recent communication from Elevate stated: “As event organisers, our role is to create a safe, successful and well thought-out event for the sectors we serve, and it is with this in mind we have decided to give the Physical Activity, Health and Performance Sectors time to regroup and recover fully before hosting the industry’s premier annual event again.”

NIVEKO Provides The Perfect Package For Its Partners Having established partners across Europe, NIVEKO pools are now available for purchase by customers in 18 countries. Each trusted partner goes into great detail advising clients on the options for their dream configuration, and subsequently install and commission the pool. In order to provide them with the best possible training and information about the products that they sell, the company’s partners are always invited to NIVEKO’s headquarters, located in the Czech Republic. There, they are given thorough training about the company itself, the wide range of products it offers, technical information, including a detailed description of the product, its properties, configuration options and installation method, and, last but not least, marketing support. The visit always includes an excursion to the company’s production premises, where partners can see for themselves the entire process of a pool being manufactured. There, they are given a demonstration of the company’s cutting-edge technologies and automated processes, and also
have the chance to see the great amount of human involvement that goes into each pool. However, NIVEKO’s support for its partners does not end there. Each receives a free marketing package to promote sales. Assisting in the first installation of a pool is a NIVEKO Sales Manager, who oversees the project to ensure everything runs smoothly. As a result, new partners gain trust and important experience for subsequent installations. In the event of any queries, the partner may contact a relevant NIVEKO Sales Manager and there is also a special technical support line to call too. Marketing support for partners is provided by allocated marketing managers, whom partners can contact for assistance with both on and offline promotions. It goes without saying that a broad range of direct marketing support is available, from catalogues through to samples of pool walls. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

IN BRIEF DERBYSHIRE LEISURE CENTRE GIVEN £1.5M TO BE GREENER £1.5m is being invested into a leisure centre in Derbyshire to help it become the ‘greenest’ of its type in the area. Eckington Swimming Pool & Fitness Centre is aiming to slash its carbon emissions by 66%. The project supports the council’s efforts to decarbonise energy sources in public buildings to achieve net zero by 2030. This includes the use of solar panel technology, replacing gas powered boilers with air source heat pumps and a new air handling system that will improve air quality and will increase the temperatures in the pool hall for customers in the building.
POOL RESTRICTIONS REMOVED AS PART OF PILOT SCHEME Pre-booking in Northern Ireland’s South Lakes Leisure Centre main pool in Craigavon is to be removed as part of a local pilot scheme, it has been revealed. Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council is also to reduce social distancing to one metre as part of the pilot scheme at the £35m centre. There had been complaints that people had been unable to book slots at the pool, but despite appearing fully booked, many swimmers didn’t turn up leaving empty lanes and irrate customers. The system had been introduced as the COVID-19 restrictions eased and the new leisure centre was able to open officially. In spite of the significant challenges posed by the pandemic, South Lakes Leisure Centre welcomed an average of 66,500 visitors during June and July alone. The council advised the changes, which came into effect in mid August, via a statement on social media.

Prestigious UK Water Fountain Specialist Specifies Waterco With rooftop views of London and Wembley Stadium, Canada Gardens is set to become one of the city’s most coveted residential precincts. Comprising of seven buildings and a podium garden, the development provides over 700 residential apartments as well as amenity space and ground floor uses. Part of the impressive masterplan is a series of landscaped outdoor areas, designed for residents to meet, relax, exercise and play. The project’s main building contractor was Dublin-based Sisk Group while the various water features were sub-contracted to UK-based Fountains Direct Ltd, one of the most successful companies of its type. Fountains Direct Managing Director Nick Roberts, who has specified Waterco for more than two decades, proposed five separate water features to complement the development’s architectural character. These included: • A water play feature and fountain – 33m3 volume of water • Two water feature cascade pools – 21m3 and 28m3 total water volume • Main fountain pools – 330m3 total water volume • A 7m cascading waterfall and pool – 4m3 total water volume • A children’s play pool – 7m3 total water volume.
“Waterco’s range is terrific and the quality consistently high, which complements the other equipment we use,” explained Nick. Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher commented that prestigious projects rely on high-quality filtration and circulation equipment to maintain public safety and a professional reputation. “Peace of mind is needed when reputable companies like Fountains Direct attach their name to landmark developments like Canada Gardens,” he explained. “Confidence in the supply, quality of the product and after sales service is reinforced with Waterco’s 30-year plus manufacturing history and base in the UK.”
A range of Waterco equipment was utilised across each, including sand filters, EcoPure Glass Media, MultiCyclones, Hydrostar pumps

Olympian And All Blacks Legend Back New Swimming Centre A new concept in community swimming will be launched in Lichfield when a former retail unit is transformed to house a 25-metre pool as part of a push to get the UK fit after the Covid pandemic. All Blacks rugby legend Zinzan Brooke and Team GB Olympics swimmer Abbie Wood have got behind plans to turn the empty store at Lichfield Retail Park, into Swim House, the first in a series of openings planned to take place nationwide. The plans, being shaped by community interest company Swim House Lichfield CIC, will see a former Carpetright premises become home to a three-lane pool for swimming lessons and leisure. Up to 13 new jobs are expected to be created with the opening of the centre, which will be used for a mix of formal swimming lessons, leisure classes and community uses.
The Swim House will boast a dry training facility, rehab pool, physio access and a café space. A baby pool, a viewing gallery and Covidsafe changing rooms are among the other features of the centre, which Swim House Leisure expect to be the first of dozens to be established across the UK. Abbie said: “It is exciting to see the Swim House concept taking shape. It appeals to me as Swim House offers a positive environment where young swimmers can learn so I was pleased to visit to see the plans are heading in the right direction. “A year of swimming has been disrupted due to Covid, with many young people missing the chance to learn. Hopefully, Swim House can get people back in the pool and enjoying swimming.”

Accu-Tab Goes Big In The Emerald Isle Ranking as the biggest project in Belfast City Council’s £105m multi-centred Leisure Transformation Programme, the Andersonstown Leisure Centre is an impressive facility by anyone’s standards. Eighteen months in construction, the £25m cutting edge project was created for maximum family fun and, as such, includes a 25m six lane pool with 50 spectator seats; a teaching pool; a water confidence pool for small children and toddlers plus a splash pool. The wow factor is supplied via three high speed water slides and if that wasn;t enough, there’s also an exhilarating indoor surf. Heavily used, high energy facilities like this naturally demand a premium quality, dependable and super robust water treatment system. The project’s contractor Heron Bros appointed Newtownabbey pool contractor, Oak Creative Water Engineering Ltd who, as long-standing customers of Certikin, installed nine heavy-duty TLX mild steel filters plus the Accu-Tab calcium hypochlorite system. Oak’s Linda Bell said: “We consider Accu-Tab to be perfect for a sizeable installation like this. It is very safe for staff, reduces maintenance and very reliable. The beauty of it is that it can cope with any bathing workload – from a small hospital hydrotherapy pool to a 50-metre Olympic pool. “Accu-Tab saves such a huge amount of staff time. The duty manager simply has to refill the chlorinator with the large 3-inch Accu-Tabs, which take about 10 minutes a day – a very clean procedure. It eliminates all hazards, blockages are non-existent and it is very economical! “Using Accu-Tab really is a no brainer and the water quality is superb!” Oak Creative Water Engineering Ltd 028 9085 4167 www.oak-pools.co.uk Certikin International (CertiChem Div) 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk
Latest Milestone At £73m Aquatics Hub Celebrated National contractor Wates Construction reached its latest significant milestone in the construction of the £73m Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick, with the laying of the first pool tiles. The occasion was marked with a ceremony held at the site in July, attended by the Minister for Sport and Tourism, Nigel Huddleston and the leader of Sandwell Council, MP and Councillor Rajbir Singh and other partners. The first tile was laid by Nigel Huddleston and Rajbir Singh, along with other dignitaries and two work experience students. With less than a year till handover, Wates is now focused on completing the interior of the state-of-the-art facility and finishing its three pools. This will see up to 190,000 tiles laid carefully to waterproof the 50m Olympic-sized pool, 25m diving pool and community swimming pool ready for use. Some 3,000m3 of concrete were used in the pools’ creation,
which had to be carefully poured to an accuracy of mere millimetres to comply with Olympic standards. Initially starting on site in September 2019, the project is being accelerated through SCAPE Construction, a direct award framework designed to drive collaboration, efficiency, time and cost savings. So far Wates has fully completed the external structure and roof of the site, which included installing 14 steel trusses, each spanning 75m and weighing around 30 tonnes. The team has also installed the 10m dive tower earlier in the year and recent work has included the completion of the building facades. Internally, high-level works within the pool hall have been ongoing, including lighting, fire alarm cabling and ventilation and heating duct work. Sandwell Aquatics Centre is a landmark development for the Midlands, featuring the only Olympicsized pool in the region and has been designed to create a lasting legacy for community health and wellbeing.
Finishing Touches At Pool Ensures A Healthy Future For Hadleigh A new swimming pool at Hadleigh in south Suffolk reached its final milestone in July, after it was officially opened following final finishing touches to the building. It’s part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council, and its partner Abbeycroft Leisure, to modernise swimming facilities at the council-owned centre. The project has also been supported with £200k provided by Hadleigh Town Council, and a Sports England grant of £150k. Built by local firm Rose Builders, the new wet leisure facilities include: • Brand new pool with five 25 metre lanes of Sport England competition standard with spectator seating • Improved disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail, and pool pod lift • Changing Places toilet and shower facility

• A new plant room and storage for swimming club and pool equipment • Sauna. The upgrades now complement the other modern spaces at the centre including the gym, and community and social rooms. Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said: “It’s very exciting to have now reached the final milestone of this community project in Hadleigh. There’s
always something special about seeing customers enjoying new facilities and having a splash after months of hard work by everyone involved.” Tracey Loynds, Development Director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “The new pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure is fantastic and a real testament to partnership working – we’re thrilled our customers have been able to enjoy these new facilities. The pool has been open since the Spring to avoid unnecessary disruption for members while finishing touches were put in place. This followed the easing of lockdown back in April and £182k funding from the Government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund to support the Covid-recovery of the council’s two leisure centres.

New Aquatic Apprenticeship Partnership Launched
The Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) and ICON Training (ICON) are delighted to announce a new unique collaboration to boost the provision of qualified swimming teachers in the UK. In April, the STA carried out an industry survey which revealed that nearly a half of all swim school owners in the UK have lost swimming teachers during the pandemic, and that this has impacted on how many children they can teach – with many stating the situation will become even worse when social distancing measures were relaxed. Fuse these statistics with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Swimming predicting that more than one million children could leave primary school in the next five years unable to swim the minimum standards

required as part of the national curriculum, and it presents a shocking picture. In response STA and ICON over the last three months have been planning a way to qualify up to 1,000 swimming teachers a year through the apprenticeship pathway for leading leisure operators in the UK. Both Dave Candler MCIMSPA, CEO of STA and Julian Leybourne FCIMSPA (Ch), Founder and Director at ICON have been
qualified swim teachers, former lifeguards, duty managers and senior operators, so fully understand how the leisure industry works and they share a passion to put something back into the sector they serve. Dave Candler said: “As a national governing body for swimming and an international charity dedicated to preserving human life by the teaching of swimming, lifesaving and survival techniques, STA is determined to tackle this serious shortfall to ensure learners of all ages and abilities have the chance to learn how to swim – a key life skill.” STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

AstralPool Strengthens Its Reputation As Pump Partner AstralPool has enhanced its line of pumps for residential swimming pools with its latest launches: Victoria Plus Silent (2017), Victoria Plus Silent VS (2020) and Verdon ES (2021). With these latest additions, the company offers pool and spa owners an increasingly wide range of hydraulic equipment that adapts to the needs of every user. Extensive knowledge of the category combined with end-to-end control of the product guarantees the delivery of reliable, rugged pumps, and makes AstralPool a trusted brand for professionals and who want the best for the heart of their pool. The company currently has three categories of pool pumps. The Victoria Plus Silent VS, the most comprehensive pump on the market, is a leader in the Variable Speed category. Combined with the filter, this extra-silent pump provides high-end filtration for crystal-clear water. It can also be connected to other equipment, can be integrated into a pool automation system and even features remote control. It is a pump designed to satisfy the most demanding customers. In the Single Speed Comfort category, the Victoria Plus Silent excels with its outstanding performance and high level of industry recognition. This category includes pumps that require little maintenance and are easy to use. All pumps in this line are efficient and have a wide range of flow rates that make them perfect for any size of pool, large or small. Finally, in the Single Speed Compact category, the Sena model is particularly outstanding. The pumps in this category are suitable for small- and medium-sized pools, take up little space and offer excellent intermediate hydraulic power. All AstralPool pumps are manufactured in compliance with the industry’s quality standards, and the company invests the maximum effort in continuous improvement to guarantee the highest quality.
Hanna’s Compact Controller Features 3-in-1 Digital Sensor The Hanna BL121 compact controller and chemical dosing system incorporates two proportional dosing pumps with a single digital 3-in-1 multiparameter sensor to test pH, ORP and °C simultaneously, accurately and reliably. All three readings are automatically logged and stored in the memory every 10 seconds, removing the need to test the pool water manually. If the pH or chlorine levels are not at the desired level, then the Hanna BL121 will automatically add exactly the right amount of chemical to return the pool water to the optimum levels. Designed to be simple and quick to install, the Hanna BL121 is supplied complete with all fittings required including pipe saddles, chemical injectors, wall mounting plate and 3-in-1 digital sensor. The silent peristaltic pumps feature user adjustable flow rates from 0.5 to 3.5L per hour with proportional chemical dosing which means the Hanna BL121 can be used for anything from a small two person hot tub up to a full sized domestic or hospitality pool. The Hanna BL121 utilises the world’s first digital 3-in-1 pH/ORP pool sensor for process applications and includes a temperature sensor and earth pin. The 3-in-1 digital sensor removes the need to fit several sensors making it easier to install, calibrate and maintain. As the signal is digitised within the probe there is no risk of electrical interference from other plant machinery such as circulation pumps causing erroneous readings. Additional features of the 3-in-1 digital pool sensor are a much longer operational life compared to standard sensors, much greater accuracy and stability of measurement results and the ability for the sensor condition and calibration status to be displayed. Certikin Offer Some Filtration Pearls Of Wisdom Manufactured from 100% pure glass, Certikin’s Glass Pearl Media offers a finer filtration than conventional and traditional filter media options. Glass Pearls are spherical, with no sharp edges whatsoever, making them completely safe to use. And if there’s ever a failure of the filter’s laterals and Glass Pearls flow into the swimming pool, they pose no risk of injury to swimmers or other pool users. They are suitable for both domestic and commercial swimming pool environments. Whereas other filter media may contain a variety of contaminants, Glass Pearls are chemically inert for superior purity. In fact, they

HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS NEWS
Quantum SPA – It’s Here And Available From Certikin First there was Quantum for pools, now Certikin International has added Quantum SPA to its portfolio which, like its forerunner, uses the same ceramic Nano Crystal technology, to give spas and hot tubs unparalleled crystal-clear water. As one of the most powerful sanitisers in the marketplace, Quantum SPA, manufactured by Elecro Engineering, has the power to sterilise sewage into drinking water without chemicals. Using the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) to eliminate microorganisms and contaminants in the spa water, the photocatalytic oxidation is a natural process and is used in advanced scientific industries such as hospitals and wherever ‘ultra-pure water’ is essential. Indeed, this technology was used to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. As the UV light strikes the nano crystals which are coated in a special titanium dioxide, the natural process of photocatalytic oxidation and production of hydroxyl radicals occurs. This oxidises and destroys any pollutant, whether biological or non-biological, close to the catalyst’s surface with the water vortexing through the chamber. The Quantum is the only unit in the pool and spa industry to encompass this technology at a costeffective level. Quantum SPA is super-safe and offers superior performance at reduced levels of power consumption. It works in conjunction with all pool and spa chemicals at reduced levels 0.5ppm (80-90% reduction of chemical use); electrolysis/ ionisers; saltwater chlorinators and in swimming ponds or natural pools. It can also be used independently – with an optional dosing version for use with liquid chlorine or hydrogen peroxide. All models are IP65 rated and can be installed outside. AUSTRALIAN POOL & SPA TRADE SHOW POSTPONED TO JUNE 2022 Due to the ongoing uncertainty and an increase in Covid infections across the country, the organisers of Australia’s SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show have decided to postpone this year’s planned event – due to take place at the end of August – and have announced the event will now be held in June 2022. “This is a difficult decision that unfortunately had to be made due to the ever-changing travel restrictions and new health advice,” said Lindsay McGrath, CEO of SPASA who own the event. Queensland authorities had advised SPLASH! could actually take place providing conditions did not worsen, however, with the situation fluid and lockdowns being extended and strengthened around the country, holding it on the original dates had too much uncertainty.

Certikin’s OC-1 Is A Piece Of Turkish Delight! There are beautiful pools and then there are really beautiful pools and this infinity edge pool, which overlooks the Yedi Burun (Seven Capes) coastline in southern Turkey, falls very much into the second category. When it was built, the T-shaped pool was fitted with a sand filter but its owner, Mr Cullen, was unsure about the water clarity and found the sand became ‘clogged’, possibly by pool chemicals and, in particular, flocculants. He decided it was time to take action and conducting some internet research to find a solution to the problem, discovered Certikin’s OC-1. “The technology that OC-1 uses made sense to me as it is not dissimilar in concept (though very different in size and role!) to that used in the sewage plant at our home in Kent,” explained Mr Cullen. “The installation of the OC-1 compatible laterals was very straight forward and, of course, refilling the filter with the OC-1 could not have been easier. I am delighted with how it has transformed the
functioning of my pool – its efficiency and the results the OC-1 filtration media achieves are outstanding.” Unlike traditional methods that use entrapment, OC-1 Filtration Media works through settlement which means that the debris settles within the cells of OC-1 throughout the entire bed, rather than being trapped on top of the media. This British manufactured product has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media such as sand and glass, with OC-1, it is possible to filter with a constant flow between backwashes. Also, due to the reduced head loss within the filter, it is feasible to use a smaller or variable speed pump/inverter and still maintain the same flow/turnover rate whilst at the same time significantly reducing energy costs. Water Park Visitors Party In Style Thanks To EVA Optic EVA Optic LED lights are giving swimming pools the wow factor thanks to spectacular colour ranges and music compatibility. In the Netherlands, Dutch manufacturer EVA Optic recently supplied over 200 lights to achieve a show-stopping effect in the Aquafun water park at the Den Bosch Sportiom complex. Within the facility’s fun pool area, dozens of EVA Optic A6 RGBW and A12 RGBW underwater lights were installed below the surface, while EVA Optic Hydra spotlights and Pendant lights were mounted to illuminate multiple areas. An easy-to-use DMX control panel allows the lighting to be pre-programmed and at the touch of a button all the lights – above and below the surface – change in time to music. “The attractions, the audio, the video images on the screen and the RGBW surface and underwater lighting all come together beautifully,” said Project Leader Leo Lorijn from contractor Betuwtech. “The RGBW lighting from EVA Optic is clear and promotes visibility, so supervisors can enjoy the bright
colours while maintaining proper supervision over the pool and its surroundings.” In the UK, EVA Optic lights are available exclusively through wet leisure distributor Golden Coast. “EVA Optic’s RGBW lighting is extremely versatile,” said Shaun Adams, Director at Golden Coast. “Connecting the lights to music means you can turn any pool into a great party area and create amazing effects.” All EVA Optic lights are made to international safety standards and are built to withstand the aggressive corrosion from airborne chloramines, as well as the punishing heat of the pool environment. This durability means EVA lights maintain their mechanical integrity and aesthetics in the long-term, ensuring minimal maintenance and downtime. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

Bringing this offering to both the UK with Therme Manchester, and now Canada with Therme Canada | Ontario Place, further progresses us in our journey of bringing wellbeing to all. “Through technology and engaging with the community, Therme Group and our partners will add a new architectural landmark to these cities, whilst boosting the wellbeing of the local community it serves.” Therme Canada | Ontario Place will create over 2,200 construction jobs, 800 full time permanent positions and bring upwards of 1.6 million visitors to Ontario Place every year – supporting the city and province’s tourism sectors and post-pandemic recovery. Therme’s investment is currently estimated to be $350m.
Laghetto Prepares To Take The Leap To The USA And Australia Laghetto, the Fluidra division for Italiandesigned high-end above-ground pools, finds itself in full swing in preparation to continue growing. It is working proactively to adapt one of its pool ranges to regulations in Australia and the United States. The aim is to be able to start marketing them there from next year. In this process of adaptation to continue on the path of stable growth, the company has completed the implementation of the ‘Lean’ management model that will drive production by cutting down superfluous costs. The adoption of this methodology is in line with the company’s goals of continuous and sustainable margin improvements. The method also makes it possible to improve worker safety conditions, boost productivity, and enhance product quality, a major step in modernising the company and fostering its competitiveness. Laghetto opened a new 2,500 sq metre warehouse in January to step up its response capacity to meet the strong rise in demand for its high-end aboveground pools. Thus, it continues to stride ahead in its growth process. Following a 19% sales rise in 2020, helped by the ‘stay at home’ effect created by the pandemic, signs for 2021 suggest another very good year for pools. Due to the exceptional demand again this year, the brand, which is one of world leaders in above-ground designer pools, saw the orders received in comparison with last year multiply, which has meant that – in line with what is happening in the whole sector – stock has run out until autumn.

Teamwork, Excellence And Industry Successes In this latest issue, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes touches on the importance of teamwork and the excellent results that can be achieved when knowledgeable and skilled individuals come together
A
s any sports fan will tell you, there are some individually highly talented people in a team, who can single-handedly do something magical to influence the result of a game, but generally speaking, matches are won with an outstanding team. This summer, the England Men’s Senior Football Team came close to winning the delayed Euro 2020 championships, but for penalties (again)! Whether or not you are a fan of football, or sport at all, in all of our respective businesses, we are trying to harness our own ‘players’ to work within a team ethos, to maximise the performance (customer service, product quality, etc.) and this can take a lot of hard work and reinforcement – just like practising at sport. At the time of drafting this piece, Team GB has just achieved some amazing success at the Olympics, and the next big sporting event taking place is the Paralympics, so it will be fascinating to look back and see how our team performs; hopefully, we have a successful medal haul (and lots of personal best performances). Just as a good team has a manager, they often have a coach to help the players. In business, it is still not that often that a company brings in a coach to assist in areas that may need improvement, so it is worth reaching out to see if there is someone that can (part-time) help you to improve your business. I am aware of BISHTA and SPATA members who have undertaken this challenge by bringing in a business coach/advisor and
found it very useful to improve their team’s performance. In terms of winning trophies, congratulations to all of the BISHTA and SPATA members who have previously won a British Pool and Hot Tub Award, as many of them have now been shortlisted for the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards for 2021. The nominees are included on the following pages and the 2021 winners will be announced at Piscina & Wellness in Barcelona on Monday 29 November. The delayed 2020 award winners are due to pick up their accolades at aquanale in Cologne on Thursday 28 October. Rigo Spa and Tanby Pools will collect their respective trophies as winning representatives from the UK, so congratulations again to these members. Entries are now being accepted for the 2022 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, and this event is another opportunity for members to showcase their talents. The awards in 2022 will also be a chance to celebrate three special anniversaries for the industry bodies that have been delayed due to the 2021 SPATEX show being virtual. SPATA’s 60th anniversary (including the first ten years as the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors), BISHTA’s 20th anniversary, and not being outdone, SPATEX will celebrate its 25th anniversary. For more details, please see page 31. Having identified that a team has to keep practising to win, it is so important to keep on learning, and there are many ways that this can be achieved to ensure that people stay up to date with new Regulations, Standards and other guidance. The ISPE offers its members various training opportunities, including the seminar programme at SPATEX. For the latest details about SPATEX, please see page 32.

BISHTA and SPATA continue to offer their respective courses. Richard Carrington recently ran an online heat pump course, and it proved a real eye-opener for the participants who provided some constructive feedback to fine-tune the course. Many of the courses are open to the whole industry, and there are discounts for BISHTA and SPATA members, so another reason to join these trade associations. Members will also benefit from the Information and Networking Days; please see SPN website for more details. Industry guidance evolves constantly and includes several BISHTA and SPATA member factsheets; SPATA has also revised some of its Supplements. PWTAG has updated its Code of Practice (which is free to download on their website). PWTAG has also added an update to its list of Technical Notes, which are also free to download from the website. Due to the industry collaboration at European level (through EUSA) and around the world with WAPSA, it is possible to benchmark with other National Pool and Spa Associations to compare services. It is also an opportunity to learn what might work well for our country. There has been a change of location and date for the next WAPSA meeting, which is now scheduled to take place on Monday 29 November at Piscina & Wellness, in Barcelona. Stay safe.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY Leading the way for the UK, the companies and projects within this feature are eligible to be shortlisted for the EUSA Awards as previous award winners of the British Pool & Hot Tub awards (hosted by SPATA and BISHTA).
BACKGROUND The primary purpose of EUSA is to support the development of a stronger and more prosperous business community throughout Europe by: • Lobbying on behalf of the industry on topics such as the development of European standards (thus highlighting safety). • Promoting the industry via the European Pool and Spa Awards (recognition from the industry for the quality of the work being entered from members across Europe). • The EUSA Awards are open to all National Associations that are EUSA Members to make entries from their respective member companies. Each entry submitted by a EUSA member must comply with the relevant European (and National Association) Standards, as applicable.
The BSPF is proud to recognise SPATA and BISHTA members shortlisted for the EUSA awards to be held at Piscina & Wellness Barcelona. We congratulate all of the shortlisted entries on their accomplishment in the competition so far” Judges for the EUSA Awards will assess the entries on their visual impact, innovation and aesthetic appeal. The identity of each entry is not revealed to the judges – this means that they can vote for any entry based on which ones they believe to be the best. The EUSA judges will aim to have a Gold, Silver and Bronze award winner in each category, subject to there being sufficient entries of suitable quality.
REPRESENTING THE UK On behalf of SPATA and BISHTA, the BSPF wishes the shortlisted entries from both trade associations the ‘best of luck’ in this year’s
competition. Chris Hayes, BSPF Managing Director, commented: “These European awards provide a fantastic opportunity for companies to raise their profile at home and abroad. The quality of shortlisted entries from the UK and across Europe in 2021 is exceptionally high, and the bar continues to rise year after year. The BSPF is proud to recognise SPATA and BISHTA members shortlisted for the EUSA awards to be held at Piscina & Wellness Barcelona. We congratulate all of the shortlisted entries on their accomplishment in the competition so far and look forward to finding out whether any UK companies will be amongst the eventual winners.”

Recognising Excellence And Commemorating Industry Milestones In this anniversary year for SPATA and BISHTA, the Gala Evening is an opportunity to bring the whole wet leisure industry together in celebration!
O
n Tuesday 1 February, during SPATEX 2022 in Coventry, the industry will come together in celebration. The night is open for everyone in the pool and hot tub industry to attend. Whether a SPATA, BISHTA and / or ISPE member (or none), and irrespective of whether attendees are exhibiting or visiting SPATEX, the BSPF warmly invites guests to attend the biggest industry social event of the year at this Oscar-esque style evening. The Industry Gala Evening includes the 2022 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony hosted by SPATA and BISHTA and the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards 2021, and what makes the evening even more special is that it’s an anniversary year for SPATA (60th) and BISHTA (20th), so plans are in place to make it a night to remember, with surprises in store. The black-tie event is jam-packed, and the entry price includes; a champagne reception, a sit-down meal, a chance to network with industry peers, fun entertainment, a photo booth, mementoes, raffle entry, and concludes with the evening’s resident DJ James Penny keeping guests dancing into the early hours. To register interest for seats to this event, please email: admin@bspf.org.uk It’s been a significant year for the industry, with many highs and lows. The surge in demand for wet leisure products brought many businesses financial success but also supply challenges. So, as we move ahead towards new horizons, it’s important to celebrate successes along the way. The British Pool & Hot Tub Awards play a crucial role in promoting the industry, but more importantly, to celebrate and raise the profile of the individual businesses that make the industry great! The British Pool & Hot Tub Awards were established to promote and celebrate SPATA and BISHTA members (nationwide and overseas), endorsing companies who strive for the best, working to the recognised industry standards and the Code of Ethics of the respective associations. These awards have been established to appeal to a broad crosssection of the consumer press, with coverage for award-winners gaining more and more momentum both locally and nationally, which has been evident from the mass of national press and media achieved through 2020/21.
SPATA/BISHTA Standards, awarded with Gold, Silver or Bronze awards (where applicable) with BISHTA also offering Merit awards (where applicable). Judges award entries on a transparent points-based system, making the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards a fair and highly regarded recognition of excellence for any company.
HIGHLIGHTS Recognising what’s new and exciting about the industry and moving with the times, SPATA and BISHTA work with their various committees to look at new opportunities to spotlight each year. Last year, BISHTA introduced the new ‘#everydaycation Hot Tub Happiness’ category. The new category was introduced to celebrate with lifestyle images of people enjoying time in their hot tub or exercise spa, tied in with the extremely successful national industry marketing campaign ‘everydaycation’ initiated by Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) in June 2020. SPATA is changing the criteria for its awards in 2022 to enable more members to show their compliance with industry standards and the Code of Ethics. Judges will recognise one overall best entrant in each award category, with Gold, Silver and Bronze standard awards given to entries achieving the criteria set out for reaching the required levels, based on technical and aesthetic appeal.
PUBLICITY Every winner receives press coverage with a
complimentary consumer release distributed to their local area, along with guaranteed coverage in the national trade press. Following the awards, winners receive promotion across various social media channels and online, in addition to potential coverage in related industry titles – sectors of which include selfbuilding, landscaping, holiday park, homes and gardens – making these awards a great opportunity for winning companies! Even when business is good and turnover is healthy, businesses should never stop marketing themselves, and this is where the strength of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards can help showcase a company and give it the spotlight it deserves. Plus, entering also opens the door to Europe, as award-winning companies are eligible to be shortlisted for the European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool & Spa Associations). Awards entry is now live; this is the chance for members to celebrate company successes with industry accolades in 2022. Visit the relevant association’s website now to see what’s new for 2022 and to enter online. Entries close on Friday 29 October 2021. SPATEX 2022 – It’s All Change At Coventry!
As SPATEX 2022 returns to being a much-anticipated live event, running from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 February 2022, its familiar Coventry home, fresh from a £10m refurbishment, is going to look different. With a new name, sports bar, conference centre and updated exhibition hall – expect a whole new SPATEX experience
O
ut with the old and in with the new! A smart, bright new logo announces that the Ricoh Arena, SPATEX’s home for the past eight years, has officially been renamed the Coventry Building Society Arena. It marks the beginning of a ten-year naming rights deal between venue owner Wasps Group and Coventry Building Society. The setting for Wasps Rugby, Wasps Netball and Coventry City Football Club, Coventry’s world-famous venue attracts over one-anda-half million visitors through its doors each year, and is preparing to welcome the Rugby League World Cup in October. Work is currently underway inside the venue. Familiar to SPATEX delegates – the Arena’s 6,000m2 exhibition hall is included in the major refit, and will feature new flooring, a partition wall and a new entrance for gates 27 and 28. The space will undergo a significant aesthetic overhaul, with the installation of a state-of-the-art digital and audio-visual technology system, to provide a flexible, modern and market-leading facility. The modernisation of the halls will seamlessly connect the space to the rest of the venue, providing access to up to 7,750 square metres of exhibition and conference space. A new state-of-the-art sports bar called ‘Anecdote’, located at the north entrance of the complex, will be immediately obvious upon arrival at SPATEX. It will serve ‘American-style food with a twist’, craft ales and cocktails and boast an array of TVs including wall-sized screens as well as interactive games such as table football. This, along with a new pavilion entrance on the south side of the venue, featuring the new Commonwealth Convention Centre lobby and dedicated art and gallery space, means that visitors to SPATEX will see a lot

of changes. Exhibition Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “The show’s Coventry home is ideal for SPATEX’s needs – it’s intimate and friendly with all the facilities of a top-notch venue and centrally located with excellent international and domestic transport links. We’re not the only ones to recognise its worth – along with it being the stage for some of the Commonwealth Games action in 2022, Coventry is also the current holder of the much-coveted title of UK City of Culture.”
RECORD SALES Over 90% of exhibition space is sold with some six months still to go! Michele advised: “We’ve received a fabulous response with exhibitors hungry to snap up space to showcase products that haven’t received full public exposure because of the lockdown. There seems to be huge pent-up demand and all the signs are that
SPATEX’s 25th live show will be one of the best yet. “SPATEX 2022 will have a very international flavour. We’ve signed exhibitors from all over the world, including Hungary, the USA, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany and we are looking forward to welcoming several new ones. With many of our regular exhibitors requesting larger stands, we’ve had the very welcome job of restructuring the floorplan to free up more space. “We are particularly looking forward to hosting a special SPATEX networking party on the evening of Wednesday 2 February – providing an opportunity for the industry to be together for the first time in two years.”
UPSKILLING A very popular feature of the show – ISPE are hard at work curating a live programme of workshops including aspects of the latest Health & Safety regulations affecting everyone in the pool trade, water testing and treatment, filtration, pumps, covers, liners, and much more. It’s not too late to participate and anyone who is interested in giving a generic 20-minute presentation should contact ISPE’s General Secretary, Ross Alcock – email ross@ispe.co.uk or call 01603 499959. STA POOL PLANT – ENTRAPMENT & ENTANGLEMENT
Suction Entrapment And Hair Entanglement In The Spotlight Again As we’ve seen in the news again over the summer, suction entrapment and hair entanglement can have serious repercussions on users if not properly risk assessed. In this issue, STA’s Robbie Phillips discusses the two main dangers
C
ommercial swimming pools, hydrotherapy pools, wading / paddling pools, interactive water features, whirl pools, hot tubs and spa baths all have one thing in common – water circulation systems. This means that water must leave the pool and then re-enter at another point following filtering and disinfection. This in turn means water being pulled under suction from the facility, creating two possible dangers:
Broken drain covers and grids are a potentially lethal problem
Unfortunately, human skin is able to form a perfect seal during suction entrapment
SUCTION ENTRAPMENT Bottom drains in swimming pools should be at least 2 metres apart and also have all openings of maximum 8mm in width or diameter (larger slots / holes make it easier for finger entrapment). There should be sufficient open water area. If one drain becomes blocked then the other can still divert a proportion of flow to prevent a vacuum being formed. Ideally these bottom drains should have raised large centres or other purpose designed grilles to prevent a bather sealing the entire drain with their body. Circulation systems can also have a pressure sensor enabling it to shut off immediately a vacuum is detected. The bottom drain suction risk can be seriously increased if water levels drop below the skimmer / scum trough overflow system as both are considered suction lines. This is with a single bottom drain. A single suction line is a high-risk system. If this occurs, and the surface draw off line is isolated to prevent air getting into the system, for example, then all suction water from the pool will be through the single bottom drain, increasing its suction and velocity. No pool should ever be run on bottom drain alone due to the danger of suction entrapment and / or possible hair entanglement on the bottom or side of the pool / spa tank. Flow meter and entrapment testing to enable you to risk assess this danger in your pool comprehensively can be accomplished using specific technical equipment. There are also simple methods to see if a vacuum forms on any suction outlet line, also a simple wig test entanglement. Suction entrapment occurs when a swimmer, usually a small child, is trapped by the suction forces created by the water flowing through
the outlet drain at the bottom of the pool or low wall suction (human skin is unfortunately able to form a perfect seal!). In some cases, swimmers have been trapped underwater until they drowned and in other cases, they have suffered serious injuries to various parts of their bodies including the bowel.
HAIR ENTANGLEMENT In spas, hot tubs and pools, the danger of hair entanglement is very real. When bathers swim too close to bottom drains or suction outlets of incorrect design with uncontrolled water flows, or place their heads underwater in a spa too close to these water outlets where a vortex (a circular motion) is formed, their hair may become entangled in the grilles / outlets. If a bather becomes trapped often the only way to free them is to cut the hair, it is surprising to note is that scissors do not work efficiently underwater, and often a knife is the only implement that will suffice. It has also been noted that any fitting with these design defects at a specific outlet fitting will potentially cause this entanglement – i.e., main circulating and / or booster pumps.
EXAMPLES OF POTENTIAL SOURCES OF ENTRAPMENT / ENTANGLEMENT • • • • •
Incorrect operation. Incorrect fittings. Poor design of drain outlets and covers. Insufficient number of drains. Creation of one line suction to main circulation or ancillary pumps.
Refurbishment of any pool or water-based facility should always risk assess new equipment to ensure no additional risks are introduced in relation to suction entrapment and hair entanglement” 34 August 2021 SPN 34_SPN_August_2021_STA.indd 34
• Vortex formed over fittings – anti-vortex fittings fitted. • All fittings made secure so they cannot be removed. • All one-line suctions eliminated, and overflow pipework valves locked to prevent the creation of one-line suctions. • Velocities through outlets not adhering to recommended rates. • Broken grids – a potentially lethal problem. It is therefore imperative that all involved in the design, manufacture and construction should work to produce a safe facility. It is essential that knowledgeable pool contractors and consultants are employed. The operator should also be fully trained and aware of the potential dangers, and continuously risk assesses the operation of critical valves, line velocities and fittings etc. Refurbishment of any pool or waterbased facility should always risk assess new equipment to ensure no additional risks are introduced in relation to suction entrapment and hair entanglement. It should be noted that facilities with balance tanks for deck level systems do not normally produce these risks as the water flows by gravity to a tank before direct suction to the pump(s). Booster pumps excluded. Robbie highlights the importance of professional pool plant training in preventing suction entrapment and entanglement tragedies. STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification, which is CIMSPA professionally endorsed covers this, and all that operators need to ensure safe, clear and hygienic water practices in pools, spas and interactive water features. COMPANY FOCUS
Flowing With Success – Plastica’s Water Treatment Department With an increase in water-based leisure activities, it’s not surprising that UK manufacturer and distributor Plastica has seen growth in their water treatment business. In this issue, we take a closer look at this success story
A
s Plastica approaches their 51st year of trading next March, one section of the East Sussex-based business that has gone from strength to strength and seen substantial growth recently has been their Water Treatment department. With the domestic side of the wet leisure industry coming into its own in 2020, orders for water treatment products flooded in to Plastica. As a result of this increased demand, more capacity was needed and last September, expansion into nearby 5,000 square foot premises provided more storage space and room for an automated filling and capping machine. Run by an experienced team of Water Treatment staff, the expansion enabled Plastica to keep production flowing throughout the winter pandemic lockdown while maintaining safe, social distancing protocols. It also allowed the streamlining of their production process to deal with a growing list of orders and the company’s knowledgeable team has brought their years of experience together to provide an efficient and timely service. Playing a crucial part in the success of the water treatment side of the business, the Purchasing Department travels worldwide to source the best quality checked and proven products for not only their Relax Spa and Pool ranges, but also for the own brand labelled products which are offered to qualifying trade customers. All of Plastica’s products are packaged in their dedicated plants, which are located either in or close by to the company’s main
premises. At Plastica, they have up to 90 people who offer a very comprehensive service to the swimming pool industry. A great deal of time and effort goes into the design of the labelling on Plastica’s water treatment products. Particularly the eyecatching Relax Spa range, which includes easy to follow instructions, useful dosing charts and quick reference pictograms. It’s a product range which makes an attractive addition to any spa showroom and the company have had great feedback from their dealers regarding it. Most of Plastica’s Water Treatment products are available to buy individually, but they

also come in handy kits too – which makes them ideal for the first-time spa, hot tub or swimming pool owner. With home-based leisure activities being much increased over the past 18 months, above-ground pools and hot tubs have seen a huge increase in enduser demand and Plastica has risen to the challenge by continuing to provide high quality and easy to use water treatment products. The company’s popular ‘Above Ground Splasher Kit’ had an upgrade in the 2021 Price List to include Algicide alongside 500g pH Plus & Minus and Stabilised Chlorine granules, measuring spoons, a Pool Care Guide and Test Strips. Also new for this year was the ‘Relax Essential Spa Kit’, a perfect up-sell for the spa trade to set up a newly purchased hot tub. This also includes 500g Stabilised Chlorine, pH Plus & Minus, No Foam and a 30g Energiser sachet, measuring spoons, a Spa Care Guide and Test Strips in one handy kit. With the need for top quality products at a recent high and looking set to continue for some time yet, being able to provide water treatment solutions, packaged here in the UK by an established and experienced business gives any company an edge, and Plastica have positioned themselves and their products to ride the wave of success both in the short term and well into the future. THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
Minimising The Levels Of Chlorine In Leisure Water Whether it’s through the use of chemicals or systems such as UV and Ozone, when it comes to the treatment of pool and spa water, there’s now a number of tried and tested low and no chlorine solutions on offer. With options often providing a much gentler wet leisure environment, it’s easy to see why they are increasingly popular and in this issue, we take a closer look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson
A
fter years of feedback from pool and spa owners and operators spanning both the domestic and commercial wet leisure environments, manufacturers within the industry have been put under increasing pressure to come up with safe, dependable and effective disinfection solutions that don’t rely solely on large doses of chlorine for sanitisation. As a result of this challenge, there is now a wide range of treatments available which do exactly that. Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been a popular option within both private owners and public operators and it provides a welcome answer for indoor pools to help with eradicating unwanted smells we all too often associate with pool water that’s been treated with the chemical. Of course, chlorine will always have its place in pool sanitation but reducing the levels or replacing it completely provides some great additional benefits and many pools across the UK have, or are in the process of adopting this approach. With numerous solutions and systems on offer, we take a look at just some of the options.
PURIQ – FAIRLOCKS’ 100% ECOFRIENDLY UV WATER PURIFIER The PURIQ Bright Series UV-C water purifier offers optimal technology for crystal-clear water without the need for multiple chemicals and is kinder for the user too. Using the latest technology, the lamp placed in the pool water emits a very powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. Using a UV light provides nonchemical disinfection, enabling effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, which can benefit both public and private pools. This results in optimal purification, reducing the need by 80% of chlorine and other chemical usage. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Not only is the system better for the pool and pool user, but the environment benefits too. There is a significantly reduced
number of toxic by-products produced by the UV purifier ensuring that the end response is a cleaner, safer environment for all. Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. The PURIQ UV-C water purifier contains intelligent electronics that signals an alert when it is time to replace the lamp, which ensures that the unit is always operating at peak efficiency and the water is clear. This way, the customer always has a perfectly working device they can rely on.
GAFFEY’S HYPROLYSER® COMBINES WATER, SALT AND ENERGY Manufactured in the UK by Gaffey, the popularity of Hyprolyser® on-site hypochlorite generators for disinfection in commercial pools has increased significantly over the past decade, mainly due to the inherent health, safety and economical benefits on offer. hypochlorite solution containing less than 1% chlorine, below the threshold for hazardous classification. The Hyprolyser® generates hypochlorite on demand, producing a stock of fresh chemical each day and eliminating the need for operators to handle frequent chemical deliveries and store hazardous chlorine chemicals on site. Due to the generated solution being much lower in caustic content than commercial hypochlorite products, chemical injection points do not scale-up, removing the need for injector cleaning by the operator. This benefit alone significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents and chemical contact and affords a big improvement in the reliability of disinfection and dosing system. British salt mines produce abundant supplies of some of the best quality salt in the world. Using salt as the raw ingredient for generating disinfectant offers some surprising environmental benefits too; for example, for operators using traditional packaged calcium hypochlorite products in drums, switching to bagged salt results in a 92% reduction in the use of plastic for the same quantity of chlorine produced, not to mention a similar reduction in energy and water involved in recycling it. The introduction of Hyprolyser® models for smaller commercial pools, such as the iSEC® and Compact models, has been a key driver in the growth of Gaffey. Prominent UK operators such as Thorpe Park Resort, Center Parcs, Royal Commonwealth Pool and Wiltshire Council were early adopters of the Hyprolyser® and, witnessing the benefits to their operations, have since installed multiple units in their facilities.
SALT & SWIM® 2.0 – HAYWARD’S NEW GENERATION SALT CHLORINATOR Available through SCP UK, Salt & Swim® 2.0 is a new generation salt chlorinator from Hayward and offers pool owners precise and user-friendly controls thanks to the product’s LED display. In addition, a transparent cell allows for visual checks on production and a

gas detector is included as standard. Salt & Swim® 2.0 gives a visual indicator and changes colour depending on the control selection made – in particular for chlorine production – regardless of whether a pool has an open or closed pool cover and will then adjust production accordingly. Available in options which cover a wide range of chlorine production (8, 16, 22, 33 g/h/cl), five levels of chlorine production are possible: 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%. A flow detector kit is available as an option and for peace of mind, the Salt & Swim® 2.0 comes compete with a 2-year warranty. It is joined for the 2020 season by two additional salt chlorinator products from Hayward – the AquaRite Flo and AquaRite Flo Advanced – the latter of which is fully featured and will allow the control of additional pool equipment. Both AquaRite models come with a wide range of chlorine production capabilities and each includes a 3-year warranty. These new additions mean that SCP now has a wide range of salt chlorinator products from leading brands including Davey, Hayward and Pentair.
HARNESSING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR SPARKLING CLEAR WATER A prime focus of scientific advances today is ceramic nano crystal technology, and it is this which is used in the Quantum to create one of the most powerful forms of sterilisation – photocatalytic oxidation. Manufactured by Elecro Engineering and available from Certikin International, Plastica and other leading distributors, Quantum eliminates contaminants leaving water fresh and clean. Easy to install, Quantum gives peace of mind as dangerous organisms such as cryptosporidium and adenoviruses are destroyed by the photocatalytic process ensuring pool users are kept safe. Several natural processes occur as the pool water passes through the unit with only pure water returning to the pool. As a result of the processes occurring inside the Quantum, including the production of hydroxyl radicals, the treated water is free of all oil-based substances such as sun creams and all organics including urea are totally removed resulting in sparkling water. Quantum also reduces the need for chemicals in the pool and helps eliminate the smell of chlorine. Once installed, this cost-effective solution requires no maintenance; it is equipped with an intelligent lamp life indicator so when the UV lamp which initiates the photocatalytic reaction needs to be replaced this is displayed. Quantum is compatible with both salt and sea water. The Quantum is just one of numerous solutions on offer from Certikin who also provide a

INTELLIGENT SANITISATION WITH WATERCO’S HYDROCHLOR MINERAL CHLORINATOR Waterco’s energy efficient Hydrochlor chlorinates the pool making it healthy, crystal clear, and ready to swim in year-round. A saltwater chlorinated pool in fact requires considerably less attention than a standard chlorinated pool. The main function of the Hydrochlor Mineral Chlorinator is to produce chlorine to sanitise the pool water. Pool water, which contains dissolved pool salt passes over the product’s chlorinator cell. This in turn splits the salt into its basic components, one being chlorine. The Hydrochlor Mineral Chlorinator includes an energy saving, intelligent power pack that makes it easy to keep a pool sanitised and healthy to swim in. Hydrochlor uses the latest Switch Mode Power Technology to increase energy efficiency by Waterco’s Hydrochlor is self cleaning and includes a built in timer equipped with battery backup

THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption. It draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output. Hydrochlor’s Power Pack intelligently recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. An alarm indicates when salt levels in the pool water are too high or too low. If the pool is running beyond the maximum recommended salt level, the chlorinator will limit its output to protect the chlorinator cell. Hydrochlor includes an in-built easy to use timer equipped with battery back up, which will maintain settings for up to 150 hours. The product’s new self-cleaning chlorinator cell features a serial parallel design that enhances chlorine production, whilst requiring less energy. The self-cleaning chlorinator cell has the added ability to reverse its polarity and automatically clean calcium build-up off its electrodes. If no water flow is detected in the chlorinator cell, Hydrochlor automatically switches off the chlorine production to protect the chlorinator cell, and activates the No Flow LED indicator.
CLEAN UP WITH GOLDEN COAST AND THE POWER OF OZONE When it comes to water treatment, Golden Coast offers a wide variety of disinfection products, including the Triogen O3S series. The wall-mounted ozone generators use an active form of oxygen gas that is much more powerful than chemicals such as chlorine. Triogen O3S dissolves ozone gas in water to oxidise ammonia and destroy chloramines, which are responsible for skin and eye irritation, while reducing Trihalomethane levels, resulting in significantly better water quality and improved air quality in the pool hall. “Ozone gas is an exceptional disinfectant against chlorine-resistant organisms, viruses, bacteria and organic matter,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “With Triogen O3S, it is possible to cut the amount
Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been a popular option within both private owners and public operators” of free chlorine residuals in half. For example a domestic pool might only run free chlorine levels of 0.7 ppm using ozone treatment, compared to 2 ppm using other disinfection methods.” The Trigen O3S system is designed for maximum bather and operator safety. The ozone gas is generated and injected under vacuum conditions created by a water-driven venturi to reduce the risk of a gas leak. “The generator is built for longterm reliability and features corona discharge modules designed for operation of ten or more years,” said Adam. “The units are compact so will take up minimal space in the plant room and are very simple to install.”
ELECRO SYSTEM PROVIDES THE ULTIMATE INTERNAL REFLECTION Available from Plastica, H.R.UV-C is one of the newest members to the Elecro family of sanitisers. Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C produces up to 95% reflectivity (if you compare this to stainless steel reactors only 20 to 28% reflection is typically achieved). The H.R.UV-C is 100% sea and saltwater compatible, unlike stainless steel units that suffer corrosion issues. The super reflective properties of the Elecro H.R.UV-C optimises the UV-C radiation and dramatically increases the performance. The inside surface casing is extremely repellent and therefore self-cleaning. Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally. The H.R.UV-C is compatible with and complements all traditional treatment methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C. The Spectrum Hybrid unit creates Hydroxyl Radicals, which are essentially a water molecule with a hydrogen atom removed, causing the molecule to be highly volatile and reactive. The exceptional mobility of the molecules that fill the reaction chamber leads to the destruction of pollutants in their path. Once the Hydroxyl Radical has reacted with the pollutant it converts back into water.

WATER TESTING
Easy, Quick And Accurate Testing Thanks to numerous recent innovations, the testing of water in pools and spas has now become more accurate, sophisticated and convenient than ever before. It’s a sector which doesn’t stand still for long and embraces the latest advances in technology. The result – numerous innovative products that have literally revolutionised the process. With water testing always a high priority, in this issue, we take a closer look at the available products By Andrea Hartshorne

lean, clear and safe water is an essential part of the wet leisure experience but the last thing owners and operators of pools and spas want to do is spend an excessive amount of time and energy testing and monitoring water. In a normal season, hot summer weather gets people going to pools, lidos, spas and splash parks. However, with many facilities closed on the commercial side over the last year, some of the slack has been taken up by first-time domestic purchasers who will be new to looking after pool and spa water. As a result, straightforward and accurate testing has become even more essential, not only for safety reasons, but also to ensure equipment is operating within the correct environment too. “Pools and spas need to be regularly tested to ensure that water is clean and safe for bathers, but it is also essential for reducing corrosion and maximising the lifespan of the pool,” commented Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. Of course, commercial facilities are reopening, therefore regardless of the setting, both users and owners need to be able to trust that the cooling waters that are being enjoyed are safe and in the best possible condition. Considerable money and time are spent developing and producing more efficient and user-friendly testing systems. That’s not surprising as for commercial operators in particular, where there is the possibility of infection, only the best procedures and latest products are good enough. Any down time or bad press should an infection occur could spell disaster to both revenue streams and reputation – a scenario to be avoided at all costs, particularly if the pool has only recently reopened! Whether it’s a newly purchased hot tub or an established Olympic-sized pool, wet leisure products are major investments for their owners and they need

to be kept in the best possible condition – especially in these times where cleanliness is of paramount importance and at the forefront of people’s minds. Therefore, having the correct products to test water conditions is essential and in this issue, we take a look at just some of the solutions.

ith a vast number of options currently available for a wide range of wet leisure settings, it’s no exaggeration to say that the latest lighting technologies have literally transformed the look of many of today’s wet leisure installations in both domestic and commercial environments, allowing them to be seen in their best possible light. Super efficient LED’s have become the accepted choice of professionals across a variety of projects and their use has meant that the plain yet functional white lights, with the occasional filter on show, have almost been consigned to the dustbin of history. Well, almost – their time is certainly running out and it’s easy to see why. LED is a far more sustainable lighting solution. They do not generate toxic waste, they have a longer service life and they consume significantly less energy to work resulting in a greatly reduced environmental impact. In addition, a mix of well thought out lighting can provide some stunning effects inside swimming pools, spas and more, enhancing certain features and a project’s aesthetics, plus they can also be used externally to soften walls and other finishes too. Whole areas can be improved with thoughtful and imaginative

or many pools and spas up and down the country, heat pumps have, for a number of years now, been accepted as an ideal solution to heat water efficiently, whilst extending what are normally short seasons here in the UK for outdoor installations. With models producing many times more energy than they consume, heat pumps effortlessly outperform many types of more conventional heating methods. With the days of fossil fuel fired boilers now numbered, what is already a popular choice for both owners and installers is surely only set to grow even more. With impressive energy and therefore cost savings to be made, the latest heat pump models have become increasingly sophisticated in their operation. Many designs now feature some form of inverter technology and a number of them can now also be controlled and monitored remotely via smart device apps too. As the technology improves, so too does their flexibility and ease of use, all of which further add to their appeal. With various brands, models and options available from a variety of sources, careful
research, planning and advice is a must, but there’s usually a perfect solution on offer for virtually any pool or spa configuration. With options galore from a variety of suppliers, in this issue, we take a closer look at what’s hot in the sector.

COST EFFECTIVE HEATING WITH ECO-V HEAT PUMPS FROM WATERCO Compared to gas and electric heaters, models within the Electroheat ECO-V pool heat pump range from Waterco use just a fraction of the energy to generate the same amount of heat; and unlike solar heating, there is no reliance on the sun as the latent heat in the air is used. For

HEAT PUMPS every 1kW of electricity consumed, Electroheat ECO-V can produce up to 8kW of heat. These inverter pool heat pumps utilise a variable speed compressor to regulate the pool water temperature automatically and independently. This inverter technology is similar to a car’s engine in that it slows down and speeds up as needed to hold a selected desired temperature or speed. The desired temperature will be reached more quickly and maintained more efficiently and the inverter technology provides a more precise water temperature without the fluctuations and power wastage of fixed speed systems. Inverter technology is significantly more energy efficient with energy savings of between 15 – 30% over fixed speed systems, and the speed control of the compressor and fan motor also means quieter operation for maximum convenience. Electroheat ECO-V inverter pool heat pumps feature automatic de-icing for situations where frost or ice may develop on the evaporator as part of normal operation. Available in both side mounted and top mounted fan versions and model sizes from 5kW to 25kW, whatever the installation there is a Waterco ECO-V heat pump to suit.

THE LATEST ZODIAC MODELS OFFER BOTH FORM AND FUNCTION The new Zodiac PX50 joins the team at Lighthouse along with the Z550iQ, both of which are raising the aesthetics bar for air source heat pumps. With clean, modern lines, the units will blend elegantly into any pool surroundings. Inverter technology is the key to these two different styles of machine, the traditional horizontal air-discharge of the PX50 and the vertical discharge of the Z550iQ ensures the correct power and design can be optimised to fit around almost any pool. The Z550iQ adds to this with new smartphone capability allowing users to
set temperatures and consult the different modes of operation remotely, resulting in an air source heat pump, which truly ticks all the boxes of today’s pool owner. As the Z550iQ only requires a 500mm air gap around its base, the unit is easily placed into tight corners where a conventional heat pump would struggle to perform, and its cold discharge air is blown skywards where the 5m clearance is usually not a problem. Add to this an inverter driven fan and compressor and users get a machine

that doesn’t wake the neighbours when it comes on in the evening. With the more traditional Zodiac PX50 range, the elegant design allows it to be placed into the garden and not look like the sharp-edged chunk of steel which this sector seems to be burdened with. Also fitted with an inverter driven fan and compressor, the unit is perfect for those looking to keep their tranquil environment intact. With models moving past the MD9 up to and including the MD11 and MD12, the PX50 gives even more options for air source heating, with all year capacity for larger pools in single and three phase models available from one heat pump.
The Calorex I-PAC and V-PAC inverter heat pump ranges from Certikin have been designed in the UK specifically for the British climate. They are eco-friendly, carry an impressive five year on site parts and labour warranty and are available exclusively in the UK from Certikin. These stylish-looking, compact heat pumps (the small footprint making them compliant with permitted development rights) are available in side or top outlet versions. The side outlet also has the added benefit of Wi-Fi capability for remote control. Inverter heat pump technology allows for efficient control of the pool temperature with the I-PAC/V-PAC only using the energy required. High efficiency with modulating step-less inverter compressor gives an average COP of 10.3 (I-PAC+), 9.7 (I-PAC) and 10.7 (V-PAC), which is twice as efficient as the traditional on/off models. Complying with the European F-Gas regulations, the heat pumps use the low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant R32. It requires less refrigerant volume per kW and is easier to recycle. The heat pumps are of a compact size with a small footprint and compliant with permitted development rights. The I-PAC is made from aluminium alloy and the V-PAC from ABS. The I-PAC side outlet models have Wi-Fi capability for remote control with the app available to download for both Android and iOS devices. Certikin also offer the affordable HPP range which is designed for heating small and medium sized outdoor pools and spas,

HEAT PUMPS producing up to five times the energy it consumes and is super easy to install. The low energy consumption, coupled with high heat production, makes the HPP pump an environmentally friendly way to heat swimming pool water. The five models (6,8,12,15 and 20kW) include a reverse cycle defrost, quiet operation and a three-year warranty.
VERTICAL GARDEN PAC INVERTECH MODEL FROM SCP IS A HOT CHOICE SCP UK offer a number of heat pump solutions and one of their popular lines is the InverTech series from the Garden Pac brand. Having joined this tried and tested range of inverter heat pumps last year, the Vertical Invertech Turbo has proven to be a hot introduction and a popular choice. It is available in three models, meaning pools with volumes of water from 35m3 to 95m3 are all covered. During standard use, each heat pump runs at the capacity needed to maintain heat levels and keep running costs as low as possible. However, as the name suggests, each Vertical Invertech Turbo model has a unique booster function meaning heating performance can be 20% higher than the label capacity. By pressing the ‘boost’ button, the heat pump can run at full capacity which allows for the quick heating of any pool. This is possible thanks to larger compressors and evaporators. With an average COP 10.6 at 50% capacity (Air 26°C / Water 26°C / Humidity 80%) and a maximum COP 15.5, double energy savings are provided. The Mitsubishi DC inverter compressor and Full Inverter Fan motor offers owners a six times quieter swimming environment when maintaining pool temperatures and with heating and cooling functionality, owners can heat up the pool water or cool it down during

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS FOR EVEN THE SMALLEST OF POOLS The new Plastica HeatSeeker® Inverter Heat Pump can consume less than 12% of the electricity of conventional electric pool heaters maintaining the same heating capacity. The new HeatSeeker® range of Inverter Heat Pumps produce a COP of an average five times for every one kW of electricity consumed, running with an air temperature of only 15°C. If the air temperature available increases, the efficiency can be over eight times the supply power. Plastica’s new range comes with new inverter technology that not only gives a low start-up current eliminating any power surge but also the variable fan speeds allow it to keep the pool water at an optimum temperature while maximising efficiency. Another benefit of this is a much quieter operating noise level than any previous
ranges, making conforming to environmental legislation no problem. Plastica’s comprehensive range of HeatSeeker® Inverter Heat Pumps will cover the full heating requirements of pools from 25m³ up to 85m³ of water volume and will work efficiently for the whole season. The company also added a new heat pump to their product range this year, which is ideal for the above-ground pool market. The aptly named AG Mini is the ideal choice for heating pools up to 20m³. Being plug and play, they are light and easy to install and feature an inline RCD breaker. The AG Mini is supplied with 1” connections and a conversion kit is available for 1.5”. Owners get up to 2.9 kW of Rated Heating Capacity for input power of only 0.59kW.

DEHUMIDIFICATION
Creating The Perfect Indoor Environment
Without effective dehumidification and ventilation, indoor pools can suffer from overly humid conditions which can lead to condensation, mould, corrosion and even potential structural damage. For pool users, there can also be an uncomfortable environment to contend with too. So getting the environment right is essential for owners and users alike and in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the solutions on offer By Jon Wadeson
C
reating and maintaining the perfect environment for indoor pools and spas is no easy task. It’s one thing ensuring the water is clean and heated to the desired operating temperature, but providing the correct atmosphere outside of the water is an entirely different challenge. Without providing effective dehumidification and ventilation, problems can arise for both users of the pool and the fabric of the building itself. One of the most obvious issues is condensation, something which if not dealt with will ultimately lead to damage of either the décor or even the structure of the building where the pool or spa are located. So it’s essential that an indoor environment should have a well-planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions for swimmers, bathers, spectators and just as importantly, one that also protects the building itself. It is a specialist area, but thankfully there’s plenty of advice and product choices available which will solve numerous operating challenges under the single heading of ‘environmental control’ and in doing so, save energy and therefore costs for owners and operators. With the wealth of expertise that’s available in the sector, designers and installers should find that choosing the most energy efficient way to manage indoor pool and spa environments whilst satisfying building control regulations isn’t as daunting a task as
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 57+59+60_SPN_Aug_21_Dehumidifiers.indd 57
they had feared. In fact, when compared to the not so distant past, creating the perfect operating conditions are now a breeze and in this issue, we look at just some of the solutions that are available.
HEATSTAR – TOTAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SOLUTIONS For 40 years Heatstar have pioneered the innovation, design and manufacture of modern, highly energy efficient, climate The Phoenix EC from Heatstar is a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system for indoor commercial and domestic swimming pools
control systems for swimming pools and spas. The company are aware that in an environmentally conscious industry such as ours, responsible pool installers and owners are always looking to utilise the most energy efficient ways to manage and control indoor wet leisure environments, with building control regulations laying down strict guidelines for energy efficiency to enforce this. Given present fuel costs it is essential that the environmental control system dehumidifying a pool hall environment, such as the Phoenix EC, must utilise methods of energy recovery to condense out excess humidity without unnecessarily throwing away warm air that could otherwise be utilised, thus saving owners and operators money. The Phoenix EC from Heatstar is a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system for indoor commercial and domestic swimming pools. It incorporates different, highly effective technologies to achieve what the company says are the highest energy efficiencies and the lowest operating costs of any similar systems. These technologies focus on three main areas: The fans used in the units, optimising heat recovery (‘free’ heat) and energy efficient dehumidification via a refrigeration heat pump system. Due to the typical pool hall condition of high temperature / high humidity, a heat pump dehumidifier can absorb a high proportion of latent energy from the pool hall converting vapour into water. energy is recycled and upgraded through the heat pump system and provides greater amounts of sensible heat energy back in to the swimming pool water or pool hall air. Efficiencies in excess of 380% are achievable albeit from the same source, meaning the Phoenix EC out performs many current alternative methods of energy recycling on the market today.
CALOREX’S DELTA TAKES CONTROL Designed and engineered in the UK, the Calorex Delta is a unique multi-functional single unit which features touch screen technology as standard. It is the ultimate environmental control system, designed to take full control of the whole indoor environment and pool water heating. A comprehensive range, there’s a Delta to suit pools of every size. The system is specifically designed to provide the environmental comfort and moisture-related structural protection necessary for a pool in the most efficient way. Totally self-contained, the Delta will remove moisture and recover energy which is then re-used to heat the pool water and air. By utilising this method of heat recovery, energy costs are kept to a minimum. Typically, for every unit of power that a Calorex heat pump consumes, it will convert 2.4 times this amount to usable heat. The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to traditional heating and ventilation methods, cost savings of over 50% are achievable while corresponding CO2 emissions can be dramatically reduced by as much as 70%. The Calorex Delta 14 and 16 benefit from ECA Scheme Approval meaning they are recognised as being able to provide low carbon and energy efficient environmental control. They are the only swimming pool heat pump heat recovery machines to be included in the Government Cash Back Scheme. Recotherm has recently developed their Aerum systems that provide fresh air dehumidification combined with air to air heat via Toshiba heat pumps
RECOTHERM PROVIDE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO INDOOR PROJECTS The use of air source heat pumps to heat the water in external pools is well established but many of these are not suitable for indoor pools and installers need to be aware of the pitfalls such as low operating ambient limits and instead go for high quality, performance systems for both air to water and air to air. Many of Recotherm’s domestic units are designed around heat pumps providing the low pressure, hot water (LPHW) and the company has also recently developed their Aerum systems that provide fresh air dehumidification combined with air to air heat via Toshiba heat pumps – ideal where additional LPHW plant is not needed or desired. With Aerum, all the features normally associated with the Recotherm Aeris range (high build quality, state-of-the-art controls, pleasant fresh air environment in the pool hall and technical backup) are still there, but with the added advantage that the unit is a standalone package and can provide a significant amount of cooling in the summer if this is required. Heat Pumps may be a necessity in future and they can be a benefit if owners want to reduce their impact on the environment, but they do operate at lower temperatures in a high temperature environment so heat exchangers and ductwork generally need to be
The DS series of dehumidifiers from Trotec feature highly efficient moisture control and heat recovery for all indoor pools and spas. They are now in stock and available from Fairlocks Pool Products. Made in Germany, the professional quality DS 30 and DS 60 models have been specifically developed for swimming pool hall dehumidification. Incorporated into the design of both dehumidifiers is a fibreglassreinforced, easy-to-clean plastic housing. Inside each unit, quiet running and powerful radial fans ensure high air circulation rates, while insulated compressors and polyestercoated heat exchanger surfaces provide protection against corrosion. Both wall-mounted units are easy to install, work fully automatically and can extract large amounts of moisture from the room air, even in air temperatures as low as 5°C. The energy absorbed during the process of dehumidification is turned into warmth and directly used for heating the room, which further increases the device’s efficiency. As an example, for every unit of electricity that the units consume they will give 2.5kW of heat back to the room. At just 202mm deep these dehumidifiers are some of the slimmest wall mounting dehumidifiers on the market and as such will not protrude far into a room. Features include the incorporation of a DC fan motor that helps to reduce running costs and keeps noise levels very low, working at a level of just 48dB, which is similar to the hum from a domestic refrigerator. As a heat pump compressor dehumidifier, all energy used in the drying process is sent back to the space thus delivering dry, warm air whilst keeping energy costs down. A unique glass finish means they look great, coming in a white casing with either a white or black glass front panel that incorporates the light touch LED. Installation is flexible with the option of continuous drainage from either the right or left hand side of the dehumidifier. An automatic hot gas defrost system allows use in spaces where heating is limited with continuous performance right down to 10°C for the smallest unit, and 15°C for the two larger models. For swimming pool applications, the refrigeration coils are specially coated to ensure a long service life. Like all Meaco products, all three models in the MeacoWall range come with a two-year parts and labour warranty. ...an indoor environment should have a well-planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions” A STYLISH FIRST – THE GARDEN AIR FULL INVERTER DEHUMIDIFIER Available from SCP UK, the Garden Air Full Inverter Dehumidifier is the first full inverter dehumidifier designed for use with rooms that feature a swimming pool, spa, swim spa or hot tub. Available in three sizes, this smart looking product features a digital touch control panel and a patented high class design which incorporates perfectly matched metal and aluminium. It is suitable for a range of environments and will help keep an indoor pool or spa area free from condensation, replacing cooler wet air with dryer warmer air. As it runs ten times quieter than a traditional dehumidifier, making it quieter than a fridge, it won’t interfere with bathers users who are seeking a calm and relaxing experience. Not only is the Garden Air Full Inverter Pool Dehumidifier one of the quietest products available, it is also one of the cheapest to
run. The power requirement is incredibly low, with the largest model needing less than 5amps, meaning it consumes just 50% of the power of a traditional dehumidifier. There are three size options available, with models capable of removing 2, 3 and 4 litres of water from the atmosphere per hour. The smallest will be suitable for any hot tub, spa and swim spa room as well as pools with a surface area up to 20m2. The second is suggested for pools up to 30m2 and the third is for pools with a surface area no bigger than 40m2. Floor and wall mounting options are available and each product comes with a twoyear parts warranty.

STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS
Choose Stainless Steel For Strength And Sustainability The appeal of stainless steel for pool construction goes much further than it being a material chosen for use solely in challenging environments. Trendsetters love its polished looks and the same applies for many pool accessories too. Strength and durability combined with timeless aesthetics – it’s a winning combination that ensures stainless steel solutions are always in demand and in this issue, we examine just some of the options By Karen Witney
T
he durability and longevity of stainless steel in spas, pools and ancillary products makes for a responsible choice, plus the material provides a luxury aesthetic option too. Stainless steel is recyclable so is ecologically sustainable as well as being eminently durable. It can also withstand challenging climate conditions meaning it is equally at home in both an outdoor or indoor environment. The wet leisure industry has implemented stainless steel in many functions from spas and hot tubs to pools and a good range of ancillary products such as gratings, drains, lighting, filters and more. The flexible nature of stainless steel has captured the imagination of many manufacturers, retailers and end users to become a popular option across the pool and spa market, so read on to find a selection of products that really are a ‘steel’!
CRAFTMANSHIP WITH CREATIVITY AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL SpaFlo Ltd has rapidly become one of the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer
This Spaflo stainless steel spa demonstrates the appeal of stainless steel

of luxury stainless steel vitality spas, hydro pools and luxury hot tubs. The company was founded by Richard Gowland in 2019, and with over 16 years of unprecedented experience in the swimming pool, spa and wellness industry, the knowledge has allowed them to create a range of products befitting of the luxury market. Based in Liverpool, SpaFlo offer a depth of knowledge in the design and innovation of stainless steel pool and spa products. They pride themselves on their exceptional craftsmanship, creativeness and attention to detail. Stainless steel offers numerous advantages over other materials. It has the longest lifespan of any material, has a smooth surface which is easy to clean, isn’t affected by frost or UV rays and looks sleek and timeless. As a standard, SpaFlo use 2.5mm thick 316L grade stainless sheets to fabricate with. These are available in either a matt or polished finish and textured slip resistant sheets are installed on step treads and floors of the pools and spas. A self-standing stainless steel box section frame is wrapped
around each pool and spa to ensure all products are structurally solid. SpaFlo have their own 3D design, project management and fabrication specialists with vast experience using stainless steel to create spas and pools. Each installation is designed and tailored to meet the bespoke needs of the client. The company can deliver in sections and complete the steel welding and polishing works on site where access is limited. Otherwise, all manufacture is completed in-house and a full wet test is completed before products leave the factory. A minimum of 20mm spray foam is applied to shells with an option to upgrade to rigid foam. SpaFlo are happy to design and consult on projects under the banner of the installing pool company with the aim of speeding up a pool contractor’s installation times while offering a unique and stunning product.
DESIGNED TO LOOK GOOD AND PERFORM EVEN BETTER! Plastica have years of experience manufacturing their own products, many of which are stainless steel based. This also gives them the advantage of offering a bespoke service. Handrails or ladders can be custom made to the client’s exact requirements. Plastica has focused on quality and safety with its 43mm 316 grade mirror polished stainless steel ladders. In 2019 they launched a range of 43mm stainless steel pool ladders. Designed and manufactured at their factory to conform with current EN regulations, they are installed with the double top tread close to the pool wall, reducing the risk of entrapment and include anti-slip treads. One of Plastica’s established products featuring stainless steel is the Domestic Slidelock Reel System. With the export market in mind, the T-model version has been developed making it easier and more costeffective to ship, due to reduced pack size. The reel comes complete with all the necessary straps and fittings with an instruction guide to ensure a quick and effortless installation of either a new or existing cover to its adjustable tubes. The

STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS T-Model system is available in two sizes: the small tube which extends from 3.05m to 4.57m (10’ to 15’) pool width and the larger version which extends from 4.88m to 6.4mm (16’ to 21’) pool width. In 2020 Plastica launched the Slidelock Max Telescopic Reel with an upgraded 138mm diameter anodised aluminium tubes, giving a coverage with the smaller option from 6m to 7m and the larger from 6 up to 8m width, meaning a maximum cover width of 7.7m can be used. Made from highly polished 48mm diameter 316 stainless steel tube, it is compatible with all of the company’s end stand options. Plastica also offer a stainless steel steering wheel. Commenting on the use of the material with the company’s reel systems, Plastica’s Managing Director advised: “…we choose to work with stainless steel for our reel systems to really maximise strength, longevity and ease of maintenance.”
FLOLUX QUALITY REFLECTED IN MIRROR FINISH A huge amount of thought goes into designing the ultimate luxury swimming pool. Yet, when it comes to selecting fittings such as eyeball returns, many builders default to a white plastic option. It might seem like a minor detail, but PVC fittings completely detract from the high-end and polished look of a finished build. Not only this, they break down and can discolour over time due to chemical and UV exposure. Flolux stainless steel fittings, on the other hand, have a mirror-finish that causes them to disappear into their surroundings in a way that truly enhances the pool or spa design. Made out of 316L marine-grade stainless steel, they’re highly durable and longer lasting than the PVC alternatives. Compare the two hand-in-hand and you can literally

Flolux fittings are ideal for use in new builds or as replacements for old fittings in concrete and fibreglass pools or spas. They are very easy to install as they come in pushfit and threaded systems, meaning they can be fitted retrospectively. Flolux have found that leading builders
around the world are offering stainless steel fittings as a contract variation for clients. Flolux is the go-to supplier in this space, with distributors in the Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and of course, here in the UK via Certikin and Fairlocks Pool Products. For high-quality pool design and construction that companies are proud to put their name to, it makes sense to finish with Flolux.

commercial pools. Certikin 1.7”/43mm ladders are supplied with stainless steel anti-slip treads as standard, as well as the new Certikin 1.7”/43mm pinch anchor. The pinch anchor design is based on the popular 1.5”/38mm model for a secure, sturdy installation on all types of pool surround. All 1.7”/43mm ladders are now manufactured in 316 grade stainless steel as standard and are suitable for concrete and liner pools.
ASTRALPOOL ADDS TO ITS STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCTS RANGE AstralPool has added to its range of embedded materials in high quality AISI 316-L stainless steel, ideal for the construction, refurbishment or upgrade of swimming pools. This material has many advantages. Not only does it deliver elegance to a pool’s overall finish, but its durability and resistance make it the perfect ally against high and low temperatures, as it does not warp. What’s more, it does not age due to

Hot Tubs come in many shapes and sizes, however unlike with SpaFlo’s unique creations, not all can be completely tailored to the needs of each client. So when the Liverpool-based firm

were approached by a discerning customer who was looking for something completely different, they were able to assist with a bespoke. Solution. The wow factor was essential, at least one massage cannon was required and a fully automatic cover was on the wish list too. The project underwent several modifications until a technical design was finalised with the client. SpaFlo manufactured this amazing stainless steel hot tub from 316L grade stainless steel utilising the world’s top manufacturers of jets, controls and equipment. The three pump, 28 massage jet hot tub incorporates a Roldeck automatic solar gain slatted cover and a swan neck massage cannon, all controlled via modern touchscreens and remotely via Wi-Fi. Additional structural consideration was given to the niche required for the main contractor to install a glass balustrade onto the hot tub all down one side. All external welds were carefully polished out and the hot tub was plumbed, wet tested and insulated in house. It was manufactured ahead of schedule so it could be craned onto its 9th floor penthouse balcony with other items being installed during the refurbishment of the circa £15m central London apartment.

STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS exposure to sunlight, it is easy to clean and its metallic tone provides more beautiful and top-quality finishes to a home’s pool area. Anyone sensitive to the environmental impact of the products they purchase can rest assured: stainless steel is environmentally friendly and totally recyclable. AstralPool has therefore added to its range with the launch of three solutions for enhancing a pool’s finish with stainless steel. LumiPlus FlexiNiche is AstralPool’s new LED projector solution that adapts to any type of new-build or existing pool, as it can be fitted in niches of 180 to 230mm in diameter by just adjusting the screws. Ideal for public, hotel and residential pools, and now available in a stainless steel version (all in stainless steel or with an ABS body and stainless steel embellisher). The High-Water Level Skimmer is another of the solutions available in stainless steel and its main feature is that it gives the visual effect of an overflow pool, as it enables the water line to be placed just below the coping stone (approximately +/-4 cm). The stainless steel embellishers round off this range of ABS pool accessories and enable existing pools originally built with ABS materials to be upgraded.
ASTRALPOOL OFFER ONE-PIECE OPTIONS In addition to offering smaller stainless steel components, AstralPool UK Ltd have supplied a number of complete stainless steel pools ranging from commercial applications to high-end developments. Due to their intrinsic link with the manufacturers through its parent company Fluidra, AstralPool are well placed to build on the existing technical expertise by introducing further R&D of the pools, an example being where different flooring finish options are being developed to provide customers with a variety of styles to choose from. This is based on direct customer feedback where the need for alternative flooring options was highlighted. A couple of years ago, AstralPool introduced new one-piece stainless steel pool options, which offer a degree of flexibility and functionality to cater for this niche market where users desire a high-end product but with the convenience of a one-piece solution. They offer a stunning luxurious finish with functional performance and can be provided with a range of optional extras such as turbine driven counter-current units, loungers and neck massagers. The company are committed to developing this niche sector and have a dedicated Business Development Manager working alongside a technical and project

team. With a remit to develop this area, AstraPool seeks to expand the awareness of the company’s offering to existing trade customers but also to create awareness amongst key architects, specifiers and spa consultants who may be involved at various stages within the design process in this niche market. Based on the fact that customers are continually looking for that exclusive ‘wow’ factor, AstralPool are confident that the demand will continue to grow as a pool with a polished stainless steel finish will certainly deliver this plus much more!
SCANDANAVIAN STYLE WITH GOLDEN COAST When it comes to pool fittings that are well built but also look great, stainless steel never goes out of style. It complements other materials effortlessly, whether it’s used alongside wood, tiles, concrete and more. Achieving a deluxe finish is easy, as leading wet leisure distributor Golden Coast offers a comprehensive range of stainless steel fixtures from the industry’s bestloved brands, such as renowned Swedish manufacturer Pahlén. Delivering form and function, Pahlén’s acid-proof stainless steel fittings are durable, attractive, and finished to the highest quality. The range includes inlets, vac points,
nozzles and skimmers. “The Pahlén wide-mouth skimmer has been designed with the look of the pool surround in mind,” said Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “In place of an unsightly skimmer lid, the basket can be accessed from the skimmer’s mouth, and it’s this kind of smart thinking that can help set a pool build apart.” Golden Coast also provides a range of Pahlén stainless-steel counter-current units, allowing owners to get the most out of their pool without compromising on aesthetic and performance. The Pahlén Jet Swim Motion unit is designed around a pair of oval nozzles, with the lower nozzle directed downwards for a more even distribution of streams within the water – helping users focus on strength and conditioning. Also available is the Pahlén Jet Swim 2000, which offers adjustable jet streams up to 71m3/h – making it exceptionally easy for users to make fitness gains.

OPINION
A Climate For Change “We are certainly a solar powered industry, but can you have too much of a good thing and should we be investing in a better future?” asks Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast
I
t’s been true for as long as I have worked in this industry that a good summer weather-wise means a good summer for business. We hope the summer is hot and dry and when that weather arrives we all hope that it lasts, we all wish it to get hotter and drier. Well, as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for, you might just get it. Last July was the world’s hottest month since records began 142 years ago. Some parts of the world have just enjoyed unusually good weather but in many places it has been rather more extreme. There have been heatwaves and wildfires all around the world, from California to Canada and from Greece to Turkey. Sicily recorded a high of 48.8°C, Europe’s hottest temperature on record. Glaciers and permafrost melt. Sea levels rise. Warmer air can carry more moisture and that has led to flooding across the UK and all around the globe. For a long time, scientists warning us of climate change had to point to figures on a chart or points on a graph. Now we can see the effects of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases as life-changing events that are happening across the world.
BUT I ALREADY RECYCLE! Like a lot of people, I think I already do my bit. I buy locally grown food and carry it home in a reusable carrier bag. I try and make fewer journeys but when I do go somewhere, I ride my bike or take my electric car. I buy energy efficient products to put in my wellinsulated home and when I am at work, I’m extolling the virtues of heat pumps and solar powered pool covers. And I’m starting to wonder if that’s enough. Earlier this year Sir David Attenborough said: “There is no going back. No matter what we do now, it’s too late to avoid climate change and the poorest, the most vulnerable, those with the least security, are now certain to suffer.” Many scientists believe that we can still slow down the rate of change and in some instances, even reverse it, but to achieve that there needs to be huge changes in the
oil and gas industry, in travel, transport and agriculture and I wonder if it was about time our industry did a bit more to play its part.
BUT WE ALREADY DO THAT Our industry is now full of products designed to save energy, save water and use less chemicals but in many ways we are shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. The inescapable truth is that many of our industry’s products are made from unrecyclable plastic created through the use of fossil fuels. Should we start to do something about that? Since 2008, houses have come with an energy efficiency rating, as do all domestic appliances but our products, our spas and saunas and pools, don’t. If they did, would people choose the most energy efficient? Would it encourage manufacturers to make more eco-friendly products? It’s worked in other industries. Perhaps it would work in ours.
INVEST IN THE FUTURE Whatever its effects in the long term, this

change in the climate has brought our industry a couple of very good seasons. Business has been good; in fact it’s been excellent. While we have all been busy making hay while the sun shines, we shouldn’t forget to invest in our businesses and plough some of those hard earned profits back into our companies, ensuring equipment, software and people are all up to scratch and firing on all cylinders.
INVESTING PAYS DIVIDENDS IN THE LONG RUN There are lots of examples of this from businesses big and small but my favourite example of just what can be achieved with the right investment isn’t about business. In the 1996 Olympics, Great Britain finished with a solitary gold in the rowing, won by Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave. The nation was despondent. Then Prime Minister, John Major, made a decision to fund Olympic sports properly and upped spending from £5m to £54m. That increase in funding continued and in 2021 elite sport received £345m. At the Tokyo Olympics, Team GB’s tally of wins increased to 65 medals, including 22 gold… I’m sure you get where I’m coming from. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
