With temperatures being firmly switched to the ‘brrrrrh!’ setting and the Met Office warning that a La Niña weather event is likely this winter, the warmer days of what was for many, a pretty hectic summer, feel like a distant memory now. For a lot of businesses, it seems the last 12 months have been good and I hope that continues into 2018. One thing that this colder weather also signals is that the industry is closing in on a well-earned break – I know that I am – along with the rest of the SPN team! With the long nights now upon us and with the majority of outdoor pools put away for another year, the industry shouldn’t overlook the fact that there are many other products available that don’t need to hibernate for the colder winter months. The Annual Wet Leisure Survey, conducted by Golden Coast in association with The British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF), has highlighted this fact and shown that saunas are a growing sector for the wet leisure industry. This annual initiative has also revealed other trends within the wet leisure sector and the results from it are freely available to all at SPATEX. If time allows, I encourage businesses to invest just a few minutes in completing the survey at wetleisure.com, so that each and every one of us can benefit from the facts, figures and statistics that it provides. Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams explains more at the end of this issue in his regular ‘Opinion’ piece. Still on the subject of saunas, they are just
Budget swim and party spas are also featured in this latest edition along with the many types of products that together, provide the filtration for pools and spas across the land. Inside, we also focus on the products and services that are repairing and renovating pools by ensuring any interruptions are kept to a minimum, and that pools are safe and look their best. We’ve a piece from the STA looking at what’s next for the commercial pool industry and we also celebrate a milestone achievement for Newcastle upon Tyne-based Devin Consulting. Of course, we’ve also got all the latest industry news from both here in the UK and further afield too, plus there’s content from the BSPF covering all their recent events including the SPATA and BISHTA AGMs, Past Presidents’ Weekend and more. So, that’s the round up complete for this, the last edition of 2017. With Christmas and the New Year firmly on the horizon, I’d like to thank all of you that have supported SPN throughout the last 12 months and in many cases, longer. I hope you all enjoy both the festivities that lay ahead, and of course, this latest edition of SPN! Have a great break and see you in the New Year!

Plans For Derby Swimming Pool Complex Unveiled Derby City Council has unveiled ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art swimming and leisure facility designed by international design practice FaulknerBrowns Architects. The facility, which is being project managed by Mace, is planned as a replacement swimming pool complex alongside the Moorways Athletic Stadium. The proposals include a ten-lane, 50 metre swimming pool; a leisure water area for families and a learner pool. Alongside these water spaces, there are a range of additional features including a gym, fitness studios, sauna, steam rooms, café and soft play area. The adaptable 50 metre pool contains two booms and two moving floors, affording the facility the flexibility to form three separate 25 metre swimming spaces or a wide variety of other arrangements. The chosen site neighbours Osmaston Park and the Rolls-Royce Aerospace Campus. It comprises undulating parkland with an area of protected woodland known as Elm Wood. The nature of the proposed activities within the building led the design team to devise a simple, modular design, featuring two differentiated volumes; a ‘wet’ box and a ‘dry’ box. The changes in level of the undulating landscape have been addressed by stacking
the boxes perpendicularly, creating a natural entrance in the ‘dry’ upper volume. Large glass openings at either end of each box, respond to the different characters of the setting. The elevational treatment of the volumes creates two simple steel box portals, the silver palate of materials reflecting and celebrating the city’s enduring links with the aerospace industry. Michael Hall, Partner at FaulknerBrowns Architects, said: “It is a great pleasure to be working with the Council again to integrate this 50m pool complex into its natural setting
at Moorways. The new facility has been designed to respect the sensitive site context whilst creating a strong and inviting visual presence which draws inspiration from the city’s proud engineering heritage.” FaulknerBrowns Architects 0191 268 3007 www.faulknerbrowns.co.uk
LSPC Launches Design Hub For Luxury Pool Projects London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC) has launched a Design Hub which makes it easier for professionals involved with luxury pool projects to access a wealth of information from a single source. Creating a luxury pool requires collaboration between the pool designer, architects, interior designers, innovative manufacturers, main contractors and the craftsmanship of the pool builder and trades. Obtaining high-quality information on design, installation and marketleading products is the starting point of a successful pool project and the Design Hub is the gateway to finding key information and potential partners quickly.

Currently there are 14 product sections and each is complemented with downloadable technical sheets, brochures and, in some instances, videos. The Design Hub also provides helpful articles, and promotes the Pool Workshop for architects. LSPC worked with Heatstar, Certikin, Ocea, Bowman, AstralPool, Cranbourne Stone,
Senlac Stone, Eva Optic, Twinscape, Berndorf Bäderbau, Pollet Pool Group, Suez, Staxil and Holland Aqua Sight and AQA to produce the Design Hub. LSPC’s Managing Director, Jamie Smith said: “We’re delighted with the support we received from these market leaders and would like to thank them for enabling us to create a comprehensive and informative resource. Designing and building a pool involves the imagination of the client, the expertise of the pool designers and many companies to provide highquality equipment and technical support. It’s a true collaboration which results in a pool that
delights the client.” Certikin’s Marketing Manager, Cath Saunders said: “The Design Hub is extremely informative and professionally put together; it will be a real asset to anyone working on a pool project. We are proud to be part of it.” Jamie Smith added: “We will continue to add more pool products from leading manufacturers and are also turning our attention to state-ofthe-art wellness products. We look forward to collaborating with manufacturers in this field.” LSPC 020 8605 1255 www.londonswimmingpools.com

NEWS £32M BRAYWICK LEISURE CENTRE PLANS SUBMITTED A new state-of-the-art leisure centre for Maidenhead has taken another step forward with the Royal Borough’s planning department validating a planning application for Braywick Leisure Centre. It contains full details of the proposed £32m facility which the council is building to provide residents with a community space to enjoy sport, art and cultural events for years to come. Pending planning permission, the centre is due to open to users by December 2019 and will replace the town’s ageing Magnet Leisure Centre. Main wet leisure features include a 10 lane 25m swimming pool, a larger training pool and splash area (almost twice the size of existing facilities) and a larger changing village. The proposed centre would use 75% less energy than the Magnet Leisure Centre, which will remain open until the new centre is completed.
Revolutionising Swimming Teacher Training GLL and STA have joined together in a new 3-year partnership that will see the charitable social enterprise (and now the UK’s largest operator of swimming pools), transform the way it delivers swimming teaching qualifications nationally. The programme has been designed to enhance training opportunities and provide a progressive new aquatics career pathway for GLL’s 1,450 swimming teachers and from January 2018, STA’s Level 2 swimming teaching qualifications will be embedded into GLL’s 141 swimming pools nationwide. Andrew Clark, GLL’s National Sport & Aquatics Manager said: “By creating our own national training framework that is powered by STA’s swimming teaching
qualifications, we will be able to open up new career pathways and grow a quality workforce that is work ready; thus ensuring staffing demands are met. As a social enterprise that works in local communities, the move also supports our ambition of providing affordable, accessible and exemplar training and employment opportunities for local people.” “We will be extending our internal tutor network that has relevant front-line teaching experience, to support our workforce, ensuring that good quality delivery is maintained throughout our facilities. Furthermore, with STA’s Level 2 qualifications being endorsed by CIMSPA, we know they are of the highest quality and meet our

needs as an employer,” added Andrew. Dave Candler, STA’s CEO said: “We are delighted to be partnering with GLL and excited to be supporting a programme that is set to positively change how they deliver swimming teacher qualifications. GLL have set the bar high, and we are very keen to support their ambition using our 80 years plus expertise of training great swimming teachers and tutors.”
WEBSITE GOES LIVE FOR HERITAGE POOLS ORGANISATION Over the last few months, Historic Pools Of Britain have been busy creating a new website and are thrilled advise it is now live. The site includes a comprehensive guide of all members, shares their stories, historical facts, restoration plans, images and more. Gill Wright, spokesperson for Historic Pools of Britain, says “It’s really timely that as we enter the third year of Historic Pools of Britain that through the support of our members we have managed to achieve this milestone. Having a website in place will further help unite members and seeing pools across the country standing together, some operating and some with plans in place, demonstrates the important case there is for securing the future of them all.”

Birmingham Pool Has Multiple Olympic Connections Birmingham’s newest swimming pool and leisure centre has been officially opened by Olympic hurdler turned TV personality, Colin Jackson – but the Olympic connection doesn’t stop there. In 2014, Birmingham City Council bought equipment from one of the Olympic training pools used during the 2012 London Games, spending approximately £200,000 for the tank, heating system and filters. This equipment is now back in use as part of the new Sparkhill Pool. Operated by Places for People Leisure on behalf of the council, the new facility includes a six-lane
25m pool with viewing areas, a learner pool, sauna and steam rooms, a fitness suite and other leisure facilities. The centre was designed by Roberts Limbrick Architects and built by Pellikaan Construction and is unique in its design and is sympathetic to the history of the old baths which used to sit on the same site but were closed after being deemed beyond economic repair in 2008. The £7.5m Sparkhill Pool is the latest of five projects either being built or rebuilt around the Midlands city following a major overhaul of council leisure services.

NEWS COVENTRY HAS HOPES FOR NEW OLYMPIC-SIZED POOL A planning application has been submitted for a new 50-metre swimming pool on the outskirts of Coventry. The plans detail that the new pool would be built at the Alan Higgs Centre on the site of a current indoor sports pitch, which would then be relocated elsewhere on the large Midlands site. Coventry’s existing Olympic sized swimming pool located at Fairfax Street is set to close after a council vote in 2014. If the application is successful, the new 50m pool is expected to open to the public in summer 2019.
LEADING EXHIBITIONS JOIN FORCES AT EXCEL LONDON Elevate, COPA Series and the Elite Sports Performance & Rehabilitation Expo will run alongside each other for the first time on 9 – 10 May 2018. This combination of events will comfortably form the largest gathering of sport, health, fitness and rehabilitation professionals in the UK – attracting an audience of over 8,000 purchasers, specifiers and potential partners. Exhibitors will receive the same experience of meeting relevant clients for their brand, whilst visitors enjoy an unrivalled range of innovative products, features, workshops and over 300 free-to-attend seminars. Each event will keep its own entrance, exhibition, content and features, but attendees will be able to access all areas with one badge. Max Quittenton, Elevate founder commented: “We are delighted. The audience for all three shows share closely connected expertise and it’s widely accepted that tackling physical inactivity requires exactly this type of cross-sector collaboration. The synergies between rehabilitation, sport, fitness and health are clear. By collocating we are firmly establishing the UK’s largest physical activity trade event.”

IoS Becomes A PWTAG Approved Training Organisation The Institute of Swimming (IoS) has become a Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Approved Training Organisation for their Swimming Pool Technical Operator training. PWTAG are an independent, membership organisation working on raising standards in the quality and treatment of swimming pool water. Their guidelines are widely viewed as best practice, with bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive considering them as the standard to be achieved in effectively managed swimming pools. PWTAG Director, Ralph Riley said: “This is a great achievement for the Institute of Swimming and PWTAG is delighted to welcome them in providing swimming pool technical operator training that meets with the PWTAG
standards. This will help to ensure safer pools and healthy swimming. “PWTAG approved training status ensures that if a swimming pool wishes to train their technical staff to meet PWTAG requirements, they can find a training provider and course that meets the PWTAG Code of Practice.” There have been successful prosecutions under health and safety legislation where PWTAG guidelines have not been followed. As well as safeguarding the public, using a PWTAG Approved Training Organisation protects your reputation and could be vital should you ever be held to account. Institute of Swimming Pool Plant Lead, Marie Hemsworth said: “We are proud to be
working with PWTAG to raise the standard of pool water treatment. It’s important for us and the sector that people can enjoy swimming, safe in the knowledge that the correct guidelines have been followed.” IoS 01509 640640 www.theiosonline.com

NIVEKO And Unipools More Than Make The Grade! The juxtaposition of a stunning NIVEKO monopool against the backdrop of this Grade II listed home in North West London makes for an arresting sight. The owner of this desirable London property called upon the services of Mill Hillbased pool retailer, Unipools, to create a “top of the range swimming pool” to provide a source of exercise, fun and relaxation for his young family. Surveying the site, Unipools’ Managing Director, Selwyn Mindel, recommended the eye-catching NIVEKO custom built monopool, to satisfy the owner’s requirement for a premium quality pool and help overcome the difficulties presented by the property’s restricted access. Supplied in the UK by Certikin International, the installation of the stunning Czech manufactured monopool, measuring 11m x 3.7m, was challenging but with it finally unloaded on the roadside, a crane was brought in to lift the pool into the property’s beautiful walled garden. A pre-prepared hole, on the site of an old swimming pool and tennis court, was waiting to receive the top-level skimmer pool with corner steps. Aside from featuring an array of Certikin equipment, the saltwater pool uses the ground-breaking Certikin OC-1 filter
media which has been proven to save around 20% in water and chemical products when compared to active glass filtration media. A state-of-the-art pool house and gym were constructed alongside the pool. “The NIVEKO pool has surpassed my family’s expectations,” said the delighted owner, Phillip Jones. “We love its simplicity and clean lines. We had a good idea of what we wanted our pool to look like, but it was not very specific, so we welcomed the advice and recommendations given by the experts at Unipools. Despite the complexity
Low Wood Bay Turns To Ceramique Internationale Tile specialist Ceramique Internationale has contributed to a £16m refurbishment project at the prestigious Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa in the Lake District. The project at the famous hotel, which enjoys stunning views across Lake Windermere, comprised the refurbishment and development of the hotel bedrooms, a new restaurant, a refurbished health club and gym plus the upgrading and creation of extensive indoor and outdoor wet leisure experiences along with relaxation areas for guests. These included an infinity pool, hot tubs and a new infrared sauna, an upgraded steam room, new express spa treatment rooms and more. Ceramique Internationale worked with hotel and leisure experts Curveline Design, of Bradford, on the renovation and modernisation of the health club’s
swimming pool. The design brief required all materials to reflect the location of the resort with wood effects playing a prominent role. With this in mind, Ceramique turned to Italian manufacturer Casalgrande Padana to source the perfect tiling solutions. Casalgrande’s Marte tile in Grigio Maggia 600x600mm tiles were selected for the pool surround, with a Bocciardato finish to provide anti-slip qualities. The surround was completed with the stunning woodeffect Newood Cream Outdoor Bullnose tile to edge the pool. The pool hall walls were finished with Casalgrande’s Tavolato 1200x200mm tile in Grano effect, creating a warm, welcoming feel to the facility. David Longbottom, Specification Sales Manager at Ceramique, said: “We have worked with Curveline for a number of years and they always bring something special to hotel and spa designs. The Low Wood Bay pool area is stunning, as is the rest of the resort, and we were delighted to be able to source the perfect tiles for the project.” Ceramique Internationale Ltd 0113 231 0218 www.tilesandmosaics.co.uk

Certikin’s 2018 Seminar Dates
Certikin International have announced that they have two Seminars planned for January 2018. With new products, coupled with enhancements to customer service and updates on industry regulations, the company have got lots talk to attendees about. It’s also an opportunity to air views and discuss how, with a new pool season ahead, Certikin can help pool businesses. The dates and venues are: • Tuesday 16 January at the Tortworth Court Hotel, Wotton-Under-Edge, GL12 8HH • Thursday 18 January at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Crawley, RH11 7SX The seminars promise to be as entertaining as they are informative as Certikin have invited British ski jumper, Eddie the Eagle to give all who attend, a motivational kick start to the New Year. Eddie caught the attention of the British public at the 1988 Olympic Games and it was his determination and stoicism, and arguably his lack of success, that made him so popular amongst audiences who came to regard him as a likeable underdog. £7m Redevelopment Gets Underway In Monmouthshire A £7.4m project to refurbish and extend Monmouth Leisure Centre in South Wales has started. Alliance Leisure is delivering the scheme for Monmouthshire County Council under the UK Leisure Framework. Opened in 2000, the centre is dated and in much need of renovation. The project, which is being funded by a combination of local project developments and borrowing, will future-proof the centre’s facilities while meeting demand in under-represented markets in the area such as health, wellbeing and children’s play. ISG has been appointed by Alliance Leisure as principle build contractor for the multi-phased scheme. Phase one includes the refurbishment of the centre to include a new gym, exercise facilities and changing areas, along with an extension for a play area and café. The second phase, scheduled to open in winter 2018, includes a new 25m, five lane swimming pool, a health suite comprising a sauna, steam room and spa bath, and multi-purpose room. Designed to Amateur Swimming Association standards, the pool will be suitable for local galas with enhanced viewing areas and better facilities for youngsters to learn to swim. Julia Goddard, Senior Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, says: “This project is the result of an established relationship
Golden Coast Set For Big Reveal At SPATEX Big plans are in store for those attending SPATEX 2018, according to Golden Coast, the UK’s biggest independent distributor of wet leisure products. As part of its showcase of its newest and most innovative products, the company has revealed that they will be launching a ‘big’ product at the show. Keeping details closely guarded, Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “We will be introducing the trade to something very big and very new, but that’s all I can say for now. You’ll have to come along to the show to find out more… “After an already incredible year we’re looking forward to seeing our customers and colleagues at SPATEX. “Each year, we travel the globe in search of the industry’s highest quality and most innovative products. They’ll make their official UK debut at SPATEX, so it’s important that they meet the highest standards and offer our customers the best returns. “To make the grade, products must be more than popular or profitable: they need to add real value to a project, while enhancing an owner’s wet leisure experience. “At SPATEX, we’ll be showcasing our most exciting new additions to date…” Alongside these, visitors to Golden Coast’s stand at SPATEX (B18 and B32) will also have a chance to find out more about the company’s most popular and profitable product lines.
with Monmouthshire County Council. We’ve been in discussions with Monmouthshire for some time, but it was the launch of the UK Leisure Framework earlier this year that allowed the council to proceed with the development in the most cost-effective way.” Cllr Bob Greenland, deputy leader of Monmouthshire County Council, says: “Gone are the days when public money can be ploughed into leisure, into what some would regard as non-essential services. Yet with health issues on the top of everyone’s agenda, leisure services play a pivotal role in improving public health. “This project will increase our exercise, swimming and fitness offer allowing us to engage with more of our community.”
New ‘Swimming Pool Water’ Book Launched PWTAG’s muchanticipated new book was launched at the end of November. The Drayton Manor Hotel in Tamworth was the venue for pool operators to be introduced to the third edition of Treatment and quality standards ‘Swimming Pool for pools and spas Water’. Over 150 delegates to an allday launch seminar heard seven expert speakers – from PWTAG itself and from its industry forum – talk about the importance of the new edition. And there was a lot to hear about. The new edition is one third longer than the 2009 version. That reflects the need to update and expand the guidance. With the help of PWTAG’s 11-strong membership council, and input from the 18 members of its industry forum, the book has been significantly strengthened. Work on the new edition started two years ago and has involved close scrutiny by PWTAG’s expert membership of what was published in 2009. That edition sold 10,000 copies, so PWTAG knew that a new SWIMMING POOL WATER

edition would be an important contribution to maintaining high standards in the pool industry. Input from PWTAG’s industry forum, a relatively new development, was important to the new book. Janice Calvert chaired the launch seminar, as she has PWTAG for the last four years. She said: “I’m proud to have managed the production of this new edition, and grateful to all our colleagues, whose help has been invaluable. PWTAG has a unique role in this largely and strangely unregulated industry. I am confident that we have produced strong guidance, which should serve the industry well in the years to come, alongside our constantly updated online guidance.” ‘Swimming Pool Water: treatment and quality standards for pools and spas’ is available to purchase for £65 from the PWTAG website.

POOL CAMPAIGNERS EFFORTS REWARDED IN LANCASHIRE The future of two swimming pools in north Lancashire looks bright – much to the delight of groups who campaigned to save them. Hornby pool closed last March while Carnforth pool was due to close on New Year’s Eve, after Lancaster City Council said it could no longer afford to keep the properties open. Campaigners have worked hard to secure the future of both pools by raising money, preparing business cases and setting up charitable companies to take the leisure buildings over – and their efforts seem to have paid off with the County Council agreeing in principle that ownership can be transferred to the volunteer-led community groups.

City Pool And Turkish Baths Visit Inspires Historic Pools Of Britain Historic Pools of Britain – the organisation set up to represent Britain’s bathing heritage – visited the Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths site at the end of September to see the plans to restore it to its former glory. The group, which is celebrating its second anniversary and has raised awareness of other historic pools across the country that require restoration, has kept a keen eye on the plans to reopen the City Pool and Turkish Baths. Gill Wright, founder of Historic Pools of Britain, said: “There is huge interest in the restoration of pools across the country and it was good to discover how the Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths
project is developing. “Over the past two years, we have seen the positive impact on the public when historic pools have been preserved and reopened, and I’m excited about that happening for the people of Newcastle.” The pool and baths will be given a new lease of life following a £5m refurbishment by Fusion Lifestyle, a sports and leisure management organisation and registered charity. Campaign group Re-open Newcastle Turkish Baths and City Pool played a fundamental role in raising awareness of the building’s situation and Fusion Lifestyle saw the opportunity to get on board and add the site to its UK portfolio. Cait Read, of Re-open Newcastle Turkish Baths and City Pool, said: “We were delighted to be able to host an event here in Newcastle for members of Historic Pools of Britain. “While we were campaigning for the City Pool and Turkish Baths to re-open, membership of Historic Pools provided invaluable support, inspiration and insights from other pool campaigns around the country, so we were thrilled to welcome the group here as the restoration of Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths is about to begin.”
Swimming Club Urges Support For New Pool Facility In Kent Plans to build a new pool and leisure centre on Princes Parade in Hythe, Kent have been praised by Hythe Aqua, the biggest swimming club in the district. An application has been submitted to Shepway District Council that includes a leisure centre consisting of a six-lane 25m competition pool, teaching pool, spectator seating for up to 100 people, three exercise studios and a fully-equipped 100-station gym to replace the existing pool. Hythe Aqua Club has been based in South Road since 1975 and has a growing membership of around 500, with the majority
under the age of 16. Apart from a large swim school for learners, club members compete in competitive swimming, synchronised swimming, water polo, masters and open water events. Chairman Jim Parris says members, past and present, are excited to see the unveiling of the long-awaited plans for the new pool, which is desperately needed to replace the ailing facility. The club is urging
members to lodge their support during the public consultation process, especially younger members as they will ultimately be the long-term users of the new centre. Previous efforts to build a new pool have been thwarted by local objectors over the past 15 years and Jim is critical of opponents of this latest scheme, who he feels are putting the future of his club in danger by their attempts to block the development. “If the objectors to the Princes Parade scheme stop this proposal I fear Hythe pool will be forced to close when the next big maintenance issue arises and our community club in its current form will cease to exist,” added Jim.

Partial Amputee Qualifies As Lifeguard To Progress Career A duty manager has overcome one of the biggest challenges of his career after qualifying as a pool lifeguard with the Royal Life Saving Society UK. That’s quite an achievement for a partial amputee. Michael Williams, who works at the GLL operated Park Sport Centre in Wheatley, Oxford, had his leg partially amputated when he was 20 months old following a birth defect in his left foot. The 26 year old has worked for GLL for three years and is keen to progress his career, but has been held back by his poor swimming skills. “I needed to qualify as a lifeguard in order to progress my career. As a duty manager at a dry side leisure centre, I’ve found it so difficult to move up the ladder without holding an NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) – it’s been a massive barrier for me for nearly three years,” he said. For the last two years, Williams has battled his physical impairment to being a pool lifeguard, which involved learning to swim all over again. “The whole process was very challenging because I could not swim very well at all. Learning to swim with just the one leg is tough; but learning to become a strong swimmer was even more difficult. I had plenty of injuries and became quite stressed at times, but
with a condition like mine all you can do is forget about it and not let it affect you,” added Michael. Williams was devastated when he failed the test the first time around, but with support from his colleagues, he was determined to pass at the re-assessment, and he did. The inspiring achievement means that Williams can now take the next step up the career ladder. RLSS 0300 323 0096 www.rlss.org.uk

NIVEKO nPooL Control Simplifies Pool Management Pool manufacturer NIVEKO exhibited at the recent aquanale international fair in Cologne and presented a fully functional overflow pool which included some unique design elements. One of the features was NIVEKO’s new ‘nPooL control’ intelligent technology, an innovative system which simplifies the management of a pool, regardless of its location, and which has been specially developed by the company for exclusive use on its own pools. The new intelligent nPooL control creates the optimum pool environment, helps to reduce the demands on maintenance and provides detailed knowledge of the extensive pool system. Due to easy control via a tablet or smartphone, by means of an iOS or Android app, the customer has a continuous online overview of the pool’s condition and all its functions. The intelligent nPooL control system offers a variety of standard functions such as controlling
most of the pool technology components and external equipment around the pool. The technology also provides another advantage in the form of a closer relationship with the pool supplier who will have a complete overview of the conditions of the pool and will take care of its regular maintenance and service. Remote access also means the pool supplier is also able to control the system directly from their own premises based on the individual requirements of the pool owner – a feature which is particularly useful for when the owner is away. BADU EasyFit – Making New Connections BADU’s EasyFit, the universally-compatible circulation pump has become even more of a game changer: a new connection kit means it is now a perfect replacement for the Hayward RSII. When it was launched just last year, the pump from Speck was impressive: allowing pool engineers a very costeffective alternative when the time came to replace pumps… with no need for new pipework. Rather than replacing like-for-like, EasyFit’s connection kits were
18 December 2017 SPN 18_SPN_Dec_17_Prod_News.indd 18
available for nine of the industry’s leading pumps, including StaRite. The new connector kit means that the benefits of EasyFit can now be extended to Hayward RSII owners. Jamie Adams, Managing Director of exclusive distributor Golden Coast explained: “While the EasyFit boasts a near identical flow rate to the RSII, its motor is just half the size. “As a result, it consumes 20% less power than the industry’s leading pumps – meaning that a pool’s
running costs are significantly reduced. “None of us look forward to the costs associated with replacing a major component like this. But EasyFit certainly softens the blow by giving customers a very cost-effective upgrade.” Built to the highest standards, the BADU EasyFit is maintenance free and corrosionresistant. It is suitable for pools from 35 to 200 m³. Jamie added: “It’s easy to see why more and more pool owners are choosing to replace with EasyFit.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

Exclusive To NIVEKO NIVEKO places a strong emphasis on the quality of the components and materials used during the manufacture its swimming pools and the company has always used Polystone®, a top-quality German material from the Röchling company, which represents the current technological leader in the sector. Thanks to a close working relationship with Röchling, during the development of a specially modified and new generation of the Polystone® material, NIVEKO has acquired an exclusivity guarantee, meaning this material is produced solely for the pool manufacturer within Europe, providing a further step forward in the quality of the company’s offering. The special improved formula ensures increased resistance to chemicals and UV radiation and customers will particularly appreciate the quality of the new material thanks to its extremely long service life and high resistance to the effects of chlorine. The material contains UV-stabilisers so that it does not age, and looks like a new after years of use. Customers will also appreciate the beautifully smooth surface finish which does not allow any dirt to settle. Polystone® is a fully coloured homogeneous material and NIVEKO offers it in six colour variants. Three shades of blue are complemented by sand, white and dark grey options. The most desirable colour in the European market is white, which guarantees a nebulous blue azure shade of water in the pool. The current trends in the pool market are marked by an increased demand for a darker grey Polystone® shade, and ever alert to market trends, NIVEKO responded by changing the original grey of the material to a new and exclusive darker grey colour. Pools that include the new material are easily identifiable, thanks to a visual reference on the protective film which incorporates a NIVEKO logo. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com
Competent Water Analysis With New ‘Green Chemistry’ A basic requirement for healthy bathing and swimming is modern water treatment. This has to be optimised not only in the interest of health, but also to retain the value of the facilities – poor water quality can prove very expensive. Of course, the results of any water treatment must be regularly inspected. This is where the Lovibond® water testing instruments and reagents come in to play. The facilities operator has access to analytical instruments and kits which accurately and easily measure and record the actual state of the water quality. In addition to this, it has now proven

possible to achieve what once seemed impossible – reagents that: are easy to dose, are safe, have a long and stable shelf-life, are extremely accurate, provide reproducible results and reagents that are environmentally friendly, therefore providing conservational and competent water analysis for the user through ‘Green Chemistry’. Whether you decide in favour of the classic pool tester, the innovative domestic electronic pool tester (Scuba II), or a Lovibond® photometer, you may rest assured since all the instruments can be used with the environmentally friendly Lovibond® tablet reagents whose benefits include:
• 100% free of boric acid • Exact reagent quantity • DIN EN ISO 7393-2 compliance • Optimal pH buffer system • Strict quality monitoring and assurance Lovibond Tintometer 01980 664800 www.lovibond.com

Delta Solution Chosen Again For Holmer Park Spa & Health Club After many years of sterling service by two Delta 12s, the directors of Hereford’s Holmer Park Spa & Club naturally turned to Calorex first for a replacement H&V environmental control unit. Holmer approached local Hereford pool and spa retailer, Three Counties Pools & Spas, to quote for the job. A long standing customer of Certikin, the company asked Certikin’s H&V Field Sales Manager, Graham Kneale to survey Holmer’s beautiful 300m2 swimming pool and two spas to make an accurate assessment of its technical needs. Graham recommended a Calorex Delta 16. “The super energy efficient machine offered a massive space saving compared to the two existing Delta units, thus freeing up space in a congested plant room. It also represented a lower capital cost for using one unit instead of two.” Three Counties’ Will Welch said: “Heating and ventilation is a vital ingredient of any successful indoor swimming pool installation and it can be a very technical, specialist area so it’s great to have the support of an expert like Graham Kneale. He provides an invaluable and unique service, if only to double check one’s own estimation of what is required.” Will added: “The size and specification of the multi-tasking Delta 16 fitted Holmer’s plant room and its pool hall requirements perfectly. We were more than happy to choose Calorex as we have great confidence in the brand.” Other fresh air system manufacturers were
asked to quote but they were almost double that of Calorex. In fact, the whole job was completed and installed for less than the cost of buying a competitor’s machine. On top of that, the Delta 16 (and 14) also comes with the added bonus of being the only environmental control unit in the marketplace to offer 20% enhanced capital allowances which meant that the overall project was a staggering £45k less than the nearest competitor’s quote.

Calibrate Measures Up To Parliamentary Review An energy company based in Northumberland that provides ‘hands off’ renewable solutions to UK businesses has been featured in this year’s Parliamentary Review of Energy. Calibrate Energy Engineering are immensely proud of achieving this recognition, and they now have big plans to help more businesses in the region and further afield. Based in Chatton, the company is a leading provider of ground source heat pump solutions. These intelligent heat pumps harness the natural energy resources surrounding a building and use them to deliver low-cost, reliable heating and hot water. Their award-winning technology is used successfully by many high-energy commercial users. The financial savings are impressive and immediate as for each kilowatt of

energy used to run the heat pump, 3 to 4 kilowatts of energy are produced. Shane and Susie McDonald founded Calibrate Energy Engineering having previously owned and operated a similar company in New Zealand. They have now focused their keen business eyes on the North East, where many businesses are set to benefit from the savings provided by their systems. Hall Garth Hotel & Country Club in Darlington is already reaping the rewards of using the company with a 400% return on investment after
having the cutting-edge system installed to provide hot water for a swimming pool, spa, as well as heating their rooms, pub and gym. Director, Susie McDonald, says: “We are incredibly proud to be featured in the recent Parliamentary Review of the UK’s energy situation. The review focuses on leading energy companies across the whole sector, from nuclear and fossil fuels to sustainable energy and electric car providers. As a featured sustainable energy company, we hope this will pave the way for us to help more businesses save money and maximise their energy use. The North East is a region traditionally associated with fossil fuel production, so it seems a fitting location for companies involved in providing environmentally sound energy.” Calibrate Energy Engineering 01668 21 55 44 www.calibrateltd.co.uk

New Dawn Choose Ingenious Genie Heating Solution When it comes to building magnificent swimming pools, Certikin customer, New Dawn Pools certainly know a thing or two. But, when it comes to water leisure, beauty is more than just about good looks – jump into the pool and what becomes important, is the temperature of the water and for that you need a responsive and efficient boiler like Certikin’s ingenious Genie. Gloucestershire based New Dawn Pools were given the brief to “build the biggest pool in the location for use all year round”. The resulting stunning new build pool was sited on the bank of the River Thames in Shiplake, near Henley. The beating heart of this 20m x 5m pool is tucked out of sight in the plant room and, strictly speaking, it has two hearts to cope with the sizeable pool. New Dawn’s Managing Director, Richard Adams said: “The Genie boiler was chosen for its fast heat up time as it is a condensing boiler it is very efficient to run all year round and, being so compact, it was very easy to install. It certainly looks the part on a
high end install such as this.” Suitable for indoor or outdoor use, the super-efficient Genie range delivers a staggering 94% efficiency compared to standard direct-fired pool heaters, which typically operate between 60 to 80%. Modulating output for accurate temperature control, the heater reduces its gas consumption as the boiler gets close to the required temperature and therefore maximises efficiency. The lightweight compact design unit is supplied ready-to-go with a 3-pin plug and is suitable for spas or pools, including those with salt chlorination. Available in 20kW, 36kW and 49 kW and supplied with Natural Gas, they also come with a propane conversion kit. Heatstar Expansion Creates Jobs And Increases Production Capacity Heatstar, the British owned manufacturer of swimming pool environmental control units, has enjoyed unprecedented success during 2017. In response to this increased demand for their renowned, high quality products, Heatstar has actioned two significant investments. Firstly, they have invested in a premises expansion enabling the offices and stores to be relocated. This has released more than 2,000 sq ft of space for increased production activities. Secondly, with a clear focus on maintaining quick delivery lead times for their products, the company has invested in a significant programme of job creation. The sustained growth which Heatstar has experienced has enabled them to make a 20% increase in the production workforce over the past year alone. In addition to their reputation for excellent customer service and maintaining their position as one of the market leaders in the areas of energy efficiency and cutting edge product design and innovation, Heatstar have enjoyed another factor helping to drive their success. Because their products are manufactured exclusively in the UK, the company has been able to avoid imposing the burden of excessive price increases which have been frequently attributed by other manufacturers to differences in currency rates. Hot Tub Industry Welcomes CPC’s Training Initiative
Saunas Provide Business Growth Opportunities
More and more companies in the UK are moving away from seasonal operation by diversifying into sauna and, according to Golden Coast, all signs point to this sector offering huge growth opportunities for the industry. Backed by the results of its own annual State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey, which has shown clear year-on-year expansion for sauna, Golden Coast sees this growing consumer interest as an indication that householders are prioritising home improvement and health. The trend for wet leisure businesses to diversify into each of the three main sectors – pool, spa and sauna – continues. But, although sauna remains the smaller sector overall, it is increasing by the fastest rate – with more than half the companies in the latest survey involved in selling and installing. Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast said: “For those already installing and supporting pools and spas, saunas are a natural fit as the knowledge, skills, facilities and customer bases you have can be easily adapted to the sale, installation and maintenance of saunas. Figures from Golden Coast and its sauna partner Tylö make interesting reading for any company considering entering the marketplace. Jamie explains: “Typically, the gross profit on a sauna is 40% and your customers will be paying between £5,000 and £40,000 for an installation. But, like we’ve seen with spas and pools, installing a sauna is accompanied by growth in add-on business through consumables, servicing, repairs and retrofit products. “But, more than that, it gives you an offering that sells all-year-long, unlike pools or spas which are very seasonal.” To support companies thinking about offering saunas to their customers, Golden Coast has produced a free of charge downloadable e-book, which offers practical advice on getting started and spells out the advantages. The training arm of Gloucestershire based Complete Pool Controls (CPC) has had a busy year with its new hot tub training course. Since February, CPC has been offering a oneday training course designed for hot tub professionals and personnel dealing with hot tubs as part of a holiday rental. The BISHTA accredited course, titled ‘Hot Tub and Swim Spa Water Hygiene Management’, has been well received by the industry with almost 200 people having successfully completed it. Attendees included sales staff and engineers from multinational and independent hot tub companies, to holiday park operators and private companies who are renting out a hot tub as part of a holiday let. The training arm of CPC is run by Martin Rigby. Commenting on the course, Martin said: “Soon after the launch at SPATEX it became apparent that the industry was ready to embrace a course which clarified issues such as commissioning hot tubs, water treatment routines and testing procedures. With the publication of HSG282 from the HSE earlier this year delegates were looking for concrete advice on how best to maintain a hot tub both in showrooms and tubs used as part of a holiday let. “It is a huge responsibility looking after a tub which is being used by the public and for many of the delegates the new guidelines and recommendations are a big shock but by the end of the course they are aware of exactly what is required to fulfil their health and safety obligations.” Courses are being held across the UK throughout 2018 with two already scheduled to take place on Tuesday 23 January and Tuesday 20 February. HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS NEWS
Make The Most Of The Holidays With A Wood-fired Hot Tub Sitting by the fireplace, gazing through the window as the snowflakes swirl down from above, slowly turning the landscape into a winter wonderland – this is the kind of scene that Christmas time so vividly evokes. In Sweden, rather than merely admire the snowy outdoors from afar, it is customary to head out and fire up a wood-burning hot tub in order to truly bask in the white surroundings. The sound of the logs crackling, the steam of the warm water, a smell reminiscent of childhood campfires – this unique experience can be shared with family and friends in the privacy of one’s own garden. When December comes around and Christmas season is officially in full swing, a Skargards hot tub serves as the perfect private oasis, providing a momentary escape from the holiday frenzy. It’s an opportunity
to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature in a warm, relaxing atmosphere. With a selection of three premium hot tub models to choose from, Skargards has strived to infuse the traditional wood-fired concept with innovative enhancements. While hallmarks like the wooden exterior and the wood stove have been preserved, new technologies, high-quality materials and elegant design have come together to confer modern qualities to the Skargards brand of wood-fired hot tubs. The result – customers can look forward to discovering an authentic Swedish experience and, in so doing, create new Christmas memories, no matter how cold the weather may get. Now a market leader in Europe, the Swedish company delivers its products to customer doorsteps in 12 countries including
Abacus Helps Create Wellness Experience
A natural spa in the city of Bath, Thermae Bath Spa, has recently created a wellness suite that offers a range of state-of-the-art spa facilities which include Roman and Georgian steam rooms, experience showers and a celestial relaxation room. Abacus was commissioned by DaleSauna to manufacture key components of the spa from its Elements range of products. The Spa’s new wellness suite references both the architectural and social history of Bath while showcasing the most recent technology available in spa design. Elements offers the ability to create bespoke features. Based on waterproof structural expanded polystyrene (EPS), the product enables great design capability along with being completely waterproof in high moisture environments. Within the Roman-inspired steam room, the traditional style seating, which included integral lighting, was supplied by Abacus from its Elements range before being clad in limestone. In the

Georgian steam room, Elements was used to form throne seats together with arched wall pieces to accommodate faux arch window sections. To help create the dreamlike environment of the celestial relaxation room, Abacus supplied five Elements relaxation loungers, complete with electric heat mats, ready to receive glass mosaic tiles. In addition, the column circumferences had to be perfectly-sized so the applied porcelain and glass mosaics would be seamless. The experience showers were also supplied by Abacus. These included four Abacus Temptation built-in overhead shower heads, two sets of six Emotion body jets and three chromotherapy Temptation shower heads that provide a combination of water and colour therapy.
Interest in swim spas continues to increase, according to the State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey 2016. With years of experience as the UK’s largest independent distributor to the wet leisure industry, Golden Coast has extensive knowledge of this sector of the industry and Managing Director Jamie Adams offers three great ideas to add value to any swim spa project. Golden Coast’s Essentials Range is packed with ideas and one of the range’s most popular lines is the Signature Spa Steps. “When we hear feedback from our customers on the Signature Spa Steps, it’s clear why they’re such a big seller,” said Jamie. “Owners love their understated looks, practical features and exceptionally high build quality.” Available in three colours options, the set features four highdensity, non-slip resin steps and dual handrails for added safety. The handrails also feature both towel bars and drink holders. Another popular item from the Essentials Range is the Cover Caddy swim spa conversion kit. “While installers love the Cover Caddy’s versatility, owners love its powerful gas spring that makes lifting and opening covers easier than you ever imagined,” said Jamie. Designed for use with a Cover Caddy and suitable for swim spas up to 1.4m high, the kit includes taller caddy legs and ‘U’ arms, together with stronger pistons to cope with the additional weight. To cover a swim spa, two Cover Caddys and two conversion kits are required. Lastly, there’s the Pool Blaster Catfish. Designed for use with swim spas, the battery-powered vacuum is powerful enough to suck up sand, leaves and other detritus with ease… but small enough to clean right into the corners. “Typically, cleaning is the real downside of owning a swim spa. But, thanks to this truly innovative cleaner, cleaning is quick and easy,” concluded Jamie.

SCP Europe Expands To The East During the recent Piscina & Wellness event in Barcelona, Sylvia Monfort, General Manager of SCP Europe, announced the acquisition of Croatia’s E-Grupa. Speaking about the deal, Sylvia Monfort said: “E-Grupa is a local distributor as well as a swimming pool constructor in Istria, a peninsula located in north-west Croatia on the border with Slovenia. An SCP customer for more than ten years, we have concluded a partnership agreement with this company. E-Grupa was like an official SCP representative in Croatia with territorial
protection. The goal was to accompany them and help them to develop, which has been done in a very nice way with a small team in place. We reached an agreement regarding the takeover of the company, signed on 12 October. The team, facilities and activity remain in place.” The new created company will be called SCP Adriatica and will serve the Croatian market as well as neighbouring markets to the east. Lado Lacen remains the Director of the new company, which will be a subsidiary of SCP Italy. The companies will have the opportunity to further cement and strengthen the relationship as the upcoming SCP Europe Showcase, the much anticipated event that takes place every two years, will be held from 28 to 30 November in Rovinj, a beautiful seaside resort in Istria, Croatia. The first evening of this Showcase will be a Croatian evening and for the last day, SCP Adriatica will invite many customers from the area Sylvia Monfort and other staff celebrate the acquisition to meet with the SCP teams and vendors during this private event.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
Collaboration And Education Help To Strengthen The Industry
BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of initiatives that are helping to strengthen the industry, thanks to the individuals that have played their part in another busy year and looks forward to 2018
A
busy year is ending very fast, and it seems to be even more hectic than usual, with actions likely to arise from a meeting at the aquanale exhibition, in Cologne. This meeting of the national pool and hot tubs associations is aiming to set up a worldwide alliance to promote the industry and learn from other associations. As the discussions continue, there will be further updates in SPN and other trade media. The world alliance should be discussing the vital topic of education, and this has been uppermost in the work programme for BISHTA and SPATA. There is a review of the annual conferences on the following pages. These conferences are likely to be renamed as Learning or Information Days to ensure that members realise the relevance to them and their business. One of the speakers at the SPATA conference was Philip Harris of Wright Hassall, talking about contractual terms and one of his colleagues, Ian Colville, has contributed an article on page 41 regarding copyright issues that may affect our industry. SPATA have also been holding a series of regional meetings at venues around the country. My gratitude goes to Calorex Heat Pumps (East), Cannings H20 (South West), Portrait Pools (North) and Pollet Pool Group (Thames Valley) for the use of their excellent facilities. There was also an online meeting via WebEx for the Midlands region, and the South East decided to hold their meeting at Hogs Back Brewery in Hampshire! My thanks to the Regional Chairs for their respective contributions to their meetings (Richard Carrington, Adam Clark, Steve Hallam, Ben Studdy, Claire Asher and Jamie Smith). Not to be outdone, BISHTA has been heavily involved in providing educational opportunities through Water Hygiene Management Courses and Electrical Awareness Workshops. Due to the demand for these courses, more dates are being added in the New Year, including a follow-up day for the electrical course for those people who have completed the two day course. I would like to thank SCP and the STA
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 37_SPN_Dec_17_CH.indd 37
for their involvement. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is crucial, as is the ongoing relationship with the ISPE, especially the workshops at SPATEX. The industry is aiming to develop a range of courses and SPATA has been working with some of our supplier members to make available some separate one-day courses to learn about heat pumps and liners. Other courses are being developed for sauna and steam, covers and ductwork. Please also look out for the start of some online training sessions (webinars) in the New Year, as this should be the most efficient way of getting information, without the inconvenience of travelling to a physical location. Not only is the industry providing education for its workforce, but it is also training other people (such as holiday park owners), and there are plans to educate the Environmental Health Officers (EHO’s). BISHTA and SPATEX shared a combined exhibition stand recently to inform and educate people about the responsibilities in HSG 282 and the suppliers that are attending SPATEX 2018. Standards are an essential part of education, and with SPATA having updated its Standards this year, BISHTA will be updating its Standards in light of the changes to HSG 282 and the soon to be finished European Standard on domestic spas and hot tubs (EN 17125). The fifth European Pool and Spa Awards event is being held at SPATEX 2018 on Tuesday 30 January. BISHTA and SPATA members who have been entered into the EUSA Awards 2017 will know whether they have won when they attend the Gala Evening in Coventry which also features the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA. Please do not forget to book your tickets for the Industry Gala Evening; it is open to everyone (whether or not you are BISHTA / SPATA members). The ticket price is £71.95 + VAT per person. At SPATEX, there will also be more details about incoming BSPF President Will Dando’s President’s Weekend being held in Brighton in September 2018. On pages 38 and 39,
there’s a piece on John Scott’s recent Past Presidents meal held in Lavenham, Suffolk. Please also look out for the article on page 40 from Martin Borley talking about his cancer issues and his desire to raise awareness of men’s health. Finally, my thanks go to the dedicated team that ensures the smooth running of the offices. To Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Karen Goddard and new teammates Claire Foss and Jayne Summerfield. The dedicated Chairs for the respective Boards, Committees and Councils are Alex Kemsley (BSPF and BISHTA), Richard Carrington (SPATA), Jamie Adams (PIP) and Howard Gosling (SPATEX). Also to Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. The many dedicated Committee members, including the Technical teams, have also worked tirelessly again this year, under the chairmanship of Peter Lang and Howard Gosling. SPATA is also very fortunate to have five inspectors to call upon (Peter Lang, Jim Gordon, Tim Bareham, Ian Betts and Steve Conway). Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and the SPATEX directors have been undertaking fantastic work to provide the industry with an annual platform to meet up and to generate much-needed funds for the industry which has now passed £1.5m. Have a great festive break, see you at SPATEX 2018! DIARY DATES 2017-18 6 December

Both days provided a range of handpicked training topics from industry specialists to offer specific and informative content tailored to the calibre of attendees who work on the frontline of the wet leisure industry. associations and their members. Not only were there a number of educational sessions, there was also a networking lunch at a local tavern too. This year’s conference attendees were asked for feedback about what they thought of the conference days and why they feel it is essential for members to attend? This is what they had to say: “Don’t be put off by the ‘AGM tag’ – this was a very small part of the SPATA conference day. The talks were generally both entertaining and informative. The one concerning the
consumer rights of end users was especially eye-opening and provided essential information for anyone dealing directly with the general public – i.e. existing and potential pool owners!” said Aquaflex’s Neil Dalziel. Commenting on the day, Dan Johnson of Cannings H20 said: “As ever, I found the BISHTA Conference and AGM both informative and well spirited; the BSPF team went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable while putting together an engaging list of guest speakers. From company operatives to distributors, the other

The venue was the medieval village of Lavenham, central to the East Anglian region of SPATA which regional group John chaired for many years. Many of the guests took advantage of the unexpected local calm, while hurricane Brian was battering other areas of the country, and toured and explored the impressively well-preserved village which boasts one of the largest collections of original green oak buildings in the country. attendees were well worth catching up with too!” “The SPATA annual conference was a stimulating day, which induced lively debate amongst attendees. Regrettably, only a limited number of members turned up although one member made an effort to travel all the way from Yorkshire, to keep up-to-date with the important matters raised. Keeping abreast of changes in standards and legislation is part of our responsibility as SPATA members, and if members fail in this respect, they may make expensive mistakes in the conduct of their projects. For me, the presentation on BS & EN standards and the most recent means of accessing this vast and vital information was the most engaging of the day, as no one can keep it all in their head! Guidance on control of the life-threatening combination of spa pools & legionella (HSG 282 & 179) was also thought-provoking and vital education for us members,” explained Michael Cormacey of Aqua Blue Designs, whilst Mike Robinson of Euphoria Lifestyle said: “Not having been able to make the BISHTA AGM / Conference for a few years, I was really glad I had attended again this year! It was a great day, full of relevant information and industry updates. Of particular interest to me was the

The meal was held in the 15th Century Swan Hotel and served in the vaulted ceilinged Wool Hall which was formerly one of four guild halls serving Lavenham. These Guilds were established for the benefit of local tradespeople during times of hardship, and in many respects, the guilds echoed the underlying principles behind the British Swimming Pool Federation. The evening was rounded off with outline plans for next year when Martin and Delyse Borley will be hosting the event.

Prostate Cancer – A Personal Story Every year in the UK, thousands of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. In this issue, Martin Borley of Tanby Pools – a former BSPF President – tells his story and encourages men across the industry to take a test for the disease
A
round 48,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK, and in December last year at the age of 53, I was one of them. I had the usual niggle at my age, of high blood pressure – a symptom of running a successful company, but I considered myself fit. I swam a mile every day and cycled 50 miles regularly, plus every year I cycle 300 miles in 3 days for the O2E (Ordinary to Extraordinary) Charity. I had no symptoms at all – many men do not! I have an MOT with the doctor every year – call me paranoid, but I like to know how naughty I can be and get away with it! I noticed my PSA test in June was above the normal parameter at 3.5 and pointed it out. Another test was booked for 6 months later at which time it was found to be 4.7. An MRI scan found “something” that needed further checks with a biopsy. This confirmed the scary news that I had prostate cancer in two places but thankfully contained within the prostate and at a Gleason level of 3.3 each. In the words of the consultant, “If I was to get cancer this is the one I would want”. Getting cancer is one thing, but getting it ‘there’ is a bit of a man, mind warp. Men don’t talk about their “bits” and as ridiculous as it sounds the thought of all the probing and inspecting was rather off putting. It’s like a punch in the gut and all sorts of emotions swirl around in your head when you hear these words, not least, how to tell the children. I didn’t want to read about it, it was too raw, so my wife Delyse researched it all and we were able to sit our son and daughter down together, with the diagnosis, the treatment options and the procedure I had chosen. I am one of the lucky ones – I caught it early! It’s simple really – if you deny you have it, or ignore it, you are not lucky. Around 12,000 men die in the UK every year (33 a day), many of these are preventable. I was offered three types of treatment.
Radical prostatectomy, external radiation or internal radiation called Brachytherapy, a relatively new treatment which involves firing radioactive titanium seeds directly into the cancer cells in the prostate. I choose the latter because of my early diagnosis and my cancer had not spread. The procedure was performed in April and I am recovering well. There have been some dark moments due to the medication post- surgery and tough times during the recovery period but with the support of family and brilliant members of the Tanby team, we are getting through it. Work was a worry. Do I tell clients? Do I tell architects that we work with or would they think I wouldn’t see the end of the project? I chose to share this with clients and design teams and the amount of support from every one of them had me feeling extremely humbled and appreciated. A year prior to this, I had been speaking with our son Vincent, about joining the business – with his skills picked up from five years of living and working in China, this would take our construction side of the business to a new level. He joined the business in January, which has been a great help as I obviously could not

attend meetings. Although completely new to the business, he has been able to liaise with both existing and new clients, who have been incredibly understanding about not getting an answer straight away. Deciding to be totally open about my illness, it is amazing how many of them have been personally touched by different forms of cancer. I have just had my three-month check-up and am pleased to say that my PSA levels have gone down and are all heading in the right direction. I get very tired but I am feeling good, although I am still unable to cycle any distance. My professor has said I am allowed to try short rides – “Try it and see, as you will soon know if you have done too much”. I have another check-up in three months and thereafter they are sixmonthly for the next five years, at which time I hope to get the all clear. I have to carry a card in my wallet advising that I have had radioactive treatment and that I could set off airport alarms – I am officially the Titanium man! My reason for this article is: • You don’t have to be over 70 to get prostate cancer. • You don’t necessarily get any symptoms – by the time you do it’s probably too late! • You don’t have to be unfit – professional sportsmen get it. • Men whose father or brother have had it, are 2.5 times more likely to develop the disease. • Only one in ten GP’s ask a patient about family history even though 91% know the risks. • One in eight men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime (one in four black men). Famous men who had prostate cancer include – Nelson Mandela, Laurence Olivier, Ben Stiller, Roger Moore, Robert de Niro, Musicians James Brown, Frank Zappa, Jonny Ramone (Ramones) and Phil Lesh (bass guitarist with Grateful Dead), so I’m in good company! Initially I did wonder whether to go public with this – professionally I thought it could have been terrible – it has not been. I owe it to all the men out there – friends, colleagues and the pool industry to let them know the dangers of ignorance and denial. A five-minute test could save your life – take control, take the test!

Don’t Assume Images Sourced On The Internet Are Free To Use Wright Hassall LLP’s Iain Colville, an experienced specialist in intellectual property rights and technology lawyer, takes a closer look at the use of images found online, copyright ownership and how to avoid trouble
I
t is a common misconception, among many businesses and individuals, that any image or photograph found on the internet is freely available and can be used or reproduced for their own use, either on their own website or in other promotional materials. Using a photograph from the internet without obtaining permission, could lead to the owner (or someone acting on their behalf) demanding compensation and a requirement to stop using it.
BUT I FOUND THE IMAGE USING AN IMAGE SEARCH. DOESN’T THAT MEAN IT’S FREE TO USE? Almost all images on the internet, sourced via an image search tool (such as Google Images or Bing Images) or otherwise, will belong to someone and will be protected by copyright. Generally speaking, you will infringe the copyright in that photograph if you use it without the explicit permission or consent of the copyright owner. Infringement means the owner is legally entitled to enforce their rights against you which may include compensation or an account of any profits you make from the use of the photograph. They are also likely to demand that you stop using the image and destroy any hard or soft copies of it.
of a town or landscape) will be greater than a stock photograph of an unremarkable scene. Similarly, the licence fee for reproducing the image multiple times on hard copy promotional materials will be much greater than the fee for the single use of a small or low resolution image on a website. The image owner is also likely to charge a premium for uncredited use or where an image has been used without obtaining permission in advance. In a recent case1, a loft conversion company (Artisan) used a competitor’s photographs (Absolute Lofts) on their own website, falsely suggesting that the conversions had been undertaken by Artisan. Although the usage-based royalty figure for the particular photographs was £300, Artisan was ordered to pay an additional £6,000 to reflect the seriousness of the case. In another case2, a nightclub, which used an exclusive photograph of a musical celebrity on their website and promotional posters and flyers, was ordered to pay a usage-based royalty fee of over £5,600. You risk ending up in court if you cannot agree terms with the image owner, with the added threat of being liable for their legal costs, thus substantially increasing the sums involved.
HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST ME? The court will assess a reasonable licence fee or royalty payment for the particular image and for the specific use to which it has been put. The licence fee for a photograph taken in exclusive circumstances (for example, a photograph of a celebrity in a private location) or where the photographer has had to invest time or money in order to take the photograph (for example, aerial photographs

HOW DO I KNOW THAT A PARTICULAR IMAGE IS SUBJECT TO COPYRIGHT? In the UK and many other countries, copyright arises automatically when a photograph is taken or an image is created. The © symbol does not have to be used with the image, although its use indicates that the owner is more likely to enforce their rights. Images from a royalty-free image catalogue or library may be used without paying a royalty or licence fee, subject to restrictions set out in the licence terms for each image. You can also search Google Images for images with particular licence terms (click on the ‘Tools’ button to access the ‘Usage Rights’ drop down). In each case check the detailed licence terms: some will permit commercial use and others non-commercial; some will only require you to credit the photographer; and others will specify if the image can be modified.
HOW CAN I AVOID TROUBLE? Only use those images for which you know you have permission from the image owner for their intended use. This means buying appropriate licences from the image owner or stock image library, or only using images from a royalty-free library. If the image is on a blog, or an amateur photographer’s website, the owner may well give permission providing they are credited. Otherwise they will state the terms on which their images may be used. If you are already using images which you have found online without obtaining permission, or if you are considering whether or not to use them, it would be advisable to replace them with images you know you can use. STA POOL PLANT – COMMERCIAL POOLS
What Next For The UK’s Commercial Pool Industry? In this edition, Robbie Phillips and Luke Griffiths give their thoughts on an evolving commercial swimming pool industry and what challenges lie ahead for those that operate within it
T
he commercial swimming pool industry has changed significantly over the last few years; mainly due to local authority budget cuts, increased demands from private swim schools vying for pool space hire and the rise in the number of interactive water features and spa leisure facilities being created. As a result, the pool landscape has changed with today’s pools coming in a variety of forms, shapes and sizes, and all having a diverse range of uses and users. All these factors are determining the future of pool and spa plant management and shaping the industry’s training needs. To round up the year, we spoke to Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Expert and Luke Griffiths, STA’s Technical Manager for Pool Plant about their thoughts on the changing industry and what’s next. Q. How Have You Seen The UK Swimming Pool Market Change In The Last 5 Years? A. Robbie: With the number of swimming pool closures over the last five years outweighing the number of openings in both the public and private sector, we have naturally seen a massive sea change in the demand for water time. At the same time, we’ve seen big growth in the private swim school market, so demand for water time is significantly outstripping supply. This has all served to drive up the price of hiring water time considerably. With pool hire being highly competitive, we are also seeing all sorts of different pools in all types of locations being hired for swimming lessons. Of concern, this desperate search for water time is causing some to use substandard pools and even domestic pools for swimming teaching with no controls integrating national recommendations. This is a growing problem, and it’s why awareness and training

The Little Swimming Company in Northumberland is one of a growing number of swim schools across the UK that are building their own pool facilities
that covers all types of water facilities is of even greater importance now. Q. How Is STA Dealing With The Changing Training Requirements Needed To Manage A New Modern And Diverse Pool Set? A. Luke: STA has spent the last year consulting with industry groups to develop a new Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification that is fit-for-purpose and relevant to the industry, and all pool types – from sports and leisure centres to hotels, spas, lidos and interactive water features. By working with and listening to STA tutors, pool operators, health professionals, regulators and professional groups involved in the health and safety management of swimming pools, we have created a new syllabus that is user-friendly, robust and technically advanced; and one that covers all elements of pool and spa operations in a thorough but learner-friendly way. Q. What Does The New Syllabus Cover? A. Luke: The units covered in the syllabus include principles of healthy and hygienic

Q. Does The Content Reflect The New National Occupational Standards? A. Luke: Yes, the new qualification follows PWTAG guidelines and the new National Occupational Standard SKA PPO1. Q. What Challenges Do You Think The Industry Faces Moving Forward? A. Robbie: Our new qualification will go some way in positively bringing about change and meeting the modern day needs of pool and spa plant facilities. However, as an industry we still must deal with an ageing pool stock, budget cuts and change attitudes to training to ensure our pools are fit for purpose. We know that pools are expensive to build and maintain so with water space at a premium (and we expect this to continue in the current financial climate) and hiring costs escalating, the next issue becomes the cost of swimming lessons, which are increasing. The net result then becomes one of affordability for parents or classes being oversubscribed with large numbers. On a positive, the demand for water time has seen a rise in the number of swim schools building their own high quality pools that are designed for primarily swimming teaching. We’ve seen some fantastic facilities being built, with pools being inserted into purpose-designed factory units. We are also seeing old disused buildings being brought back to life, and becoming a focal point for parents in the community. To hear more and to discuss how the swimming pool and spa industry is evolving, STA is organising its first dedicated Pool Plant conference at SPATEX 2018 on Tuesday 30 January 2018 – all delegates will also receive ½ CPD Point. Filtration For A Wet Leisure Nation Some of the most important products that lie at the centre of any modern and efficient water cleansing system are those associated with filtration. What was for a while a fairly uninspiring sector has seen a number of innovations over recent years and filtration products, in their many guises, are now viewed as essential for providing effective water management and cost savings. This issue, we showcase just some of the available filtration solutions By Jon Wadeson
M
ore often than not hidden away and for many years perceived as low tech when compared to other more fashionable equipment, filtration has seen a number of new innovations recently with technology playing its part and providing new and improved solutions for what is without doubt, a critical part of any pool and spa setup. As efficiency increases, the use of water and contamination decreases, so improvements in products that are connected to the filtration of water are always welcome across the wide range of operating environments. From the smallest spa or hot tub to the largest commercial swimming pool, there are innovative new filtration products on offer that are helping to improve water quality and in doing so, are providing a better environment to be enjoyed by all. In this issue, we explore some of the filtration solutions and the benefits they provide.
A FANTASTIC FILTERS RANGE FROM GOLDEN COAST If you think water filters are all created equally, then think again. That’s the message from Golden Coast, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of wet leisure products to the trade. The company’s comprehensive range of filters for commerical and domestic applications can save owners time, money and water. One such product, Waterco’s range of Micron Bobbin Filters, delivers superior water filtration. Featuring a unique fishtail lateral configuration, the ingenious design eliminates the ineffective ‘dead areas’ commonly associated with traditional stardesign filters. That’s not all – this highly efficient design requires as much as 30% less water to backwash. Furthermore, a dual function drain/large sand dump port allows for easy winterisation and sand changes, while a large clear access lid ensures quick and easy servicing and inspections.
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 47-50_SPN_Dec_17_Filtration.indd 47
Supplied complete with a side mount multiport and gauge, micron bobbins are available in 500, 600, 700, 750 and 900mm tank sizes with all tanks 700mm and upwards supplied with a 2” valve. Golden Coast offers an extensive range of filters from other leading manufacturers too and Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “Whether you’re specifying for a pool, a spa, or a hot tub – domestic or commercial – we are confident that we have the best filter for you, your business and your customer.”
PEARLS OF WISDOM FROM WATERCO Waterco extended its already impressive range of water, time and money saving products with a new generation of filter media – Waterco Glass Pearls. Manufactured from 100% virgin glass, Waterco’s Glass Pearl media offers much finer filtration than other alternatives and is therefore capable of providing outstanding water purity and clarity (filtration below 3 microns). They also require 20% less water for backwashing compared to sand. Whereas other filter media may contain different contaminants, Waterco’s Glass Pearl media is chemically inert for the ultimate water purity, and at only 0.6mm by 0.8mm in size, the narrow particle size of the Glass Pearls enables in-depth superior filtration. The spherical shape also results in low friction levels, also reducing the need to Manufactured from 100% virgin glass, Waterco’s Glass Pearl media offers much finer filtration than other alternatives

They are easy to install, enabling a rapid startup of the media filter, and the high purity means very little backwashing is required to cleanse the filter media prior to commissioning the filter. Waterco Glass Pearl media has already been used in a variety of different installations ranging from small domestic pools to large, high demand commercial settings and everything in between. The results have been equally impressive regardless of situation and case studies of installations already using Glass Pearl media can be seen on the Waterco website.
CERTIKIN’S OC-1 REVOLUTION GATHERS MOMENTUM Certikin’s British manufactured OC-1 filter media is tearing up the textbook on traditional methods of entrapment filtration. In contrast, OC-1 works through settlement and cleverly harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/ controllers to make massive energy savings. By replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1, it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system, filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. It is easy to convert an existing sand filter for use with OC-1 with a simple lateral modification and in addition, two new filters, specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 media have just been introduced for both domestic and commercial installations. OC-1 filters to international swimming pool standards and has a payback of typically

6-12 months. Some of the products other outstanding key benefits include: • Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass. • Reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash – reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating. There is no need to backwash on start up with new installations. • Lightweight – Can even be shipped inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install. • Less maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment. • Recyclable at end of product life. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “OC-1 is a change in mind set. Since the launch of OC-1, we have had superb
feedback and have new installations and the upgrading of existing sand filters every week. The advantages for the installers are beginning to be fully appreciated.” OC-1 filtration media is suitable for use on all pools and spas, be they domestic, commercial or hydrotherapy.

CASE STUDY LATEST TRANSFER NEWS: NO COAL, JUST OC-1 TO NEWCASTLE! When the Alan Shearer Activity Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne approached Whitewaters Ltd to replace an old hydrotherapy pool, the pool specialist, turned to Certikin and in particular, their trailblazing new filter media – OC-1. Founded by the retired footballer on the outskirts of Newcastle, the Centre is a specialist recreational, sensory and social centre for disabled people catering for a wide spectrum of need. Having seen better days, Whitewaters set about stripping out the old hydrotherapy pool, replacing it with a £500,000 state-of-the-art facility. Six months in design, the construction took a further six months to complete. Managing Director of Whitewaters, Mick Guthrie says: “The new hydrotherapy pool offers all the grandeur of a top quality spa, but it also plays a serious role in providing therapeutic benefits to disabled people of all ages.” Water quality is, of course, of vital importance and at the heart of this pool’s filtration system is the ground breaking OC-1 filter media for which Certikin is the world’s exclusive distributor. Unique in its methodology and performance, OC-1 works through settlement as opposed to entrapment, and harnesses the recent advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers.

Unlike other cleaning agents, Pleatco FilterWash™ comes in specific formulas – one for pools and one for spas, scientifically engineered for each environment. In addition to products, Plastica are also into their sixth year of providing the Pleatco catalogue quick reference guide to filter cartridges. SELF-CLEANING EFFICIENCY FOR RESIDENTIAL POOLS With the aim of delivering filtration as never seen before in the residential pool sector, AstralPool’s experts designed NanoFiber, an efficient and healthy filtration system for

pools of up to 90m3. The NanoFiber filter is self-cleaning thanks to a sophisticated network of nanofibres, which is able to filter particles of up to 5 microns, and it prevents the device from getting clogged up with dirt. As a result, there is a significant improvement in the quality of water once it has been filtered. NanoFiber has a unique filtration system. A central manifold sends the water flowing through the mechanism sideways. As the water is redirected, this not only results in the even distribution of dirt but also extends the filter’s service life. One of the device’s great advantages is that it is easy to clean. The shower starts to work in the backwashing position. In order to backwash the filter medium properly, the lever on top of the filter must be turned. This works manually or automatically depending on the NanoFiber range chosen. In both manual and automatic mode, turning the lever also makes the filter medium turn, which ensures it is thoroughly cleaned. Physico-chemical tests were conducted by an external laboratory (Poromoter) to analyse the effectiveness of NanoFiber’s filtration system. Following comparisons with other systems in the same category, the experts who conducted the tests stated that AstralPool’s mechanism filtered more evenly and thoroughly than other models, which prevents limescale. Apart from the fact that it was easy to use, clean and reliable, the laboratory also highlighted NanoFiber’s compact design and its sustainability.
EXCLUSIVE TO SCP – SUPERPOOL SAND FILTERS Whether it’s for commercial or domestic settings, SCP offer a wide range of filtration products from a number of well-known and reliable brands including Haywood, Pentair, Pleatco and Waterco. A relatively new addition to their extensive filtration line up is the new top and side mount sand filters from Superpool. These distinctive products have been well-received by the industry due to their durability, trustworthy performance and a non-corrosive gel coat fibreglass finished tank. The UV resistant material enables it to operate under prolonged sunlight for years of reliability. Available exclusively from SCP, the smooth finished white models are available in side and top mount valve options, with the side mount option incorporating a large 9 1/2” transparent lid with lid tool giving a clear view of the filter media during operation and backwashing. There are four sizes available ranging from diameters of 20” to 35” and the range accommodates flow rates of 10m3h to 32m3h. Each filter includes a 6 way multiport
valve, reliable and durable Gylcerine Pressure Gauge and air release valve. A hose clamp allowing the valve to rotate 360° for easier connection also features and for the larger 30” and 35” models, a large diameter threaded cover and a swivel stem also enables the rotation of the filter during installation. All variants across the range come with a ten-year warranty (residential) on the tank plus a one warranty on the valve. In addition, SCP also offers a filter and pump package on these Superpool models.
QUALITY PRODUCTS AND WATER SAVING SOLUTIONS FROM WATERCO The brand names Waterco and Lacron have become synonymous with quality, effective, efficient filtration, owing to the company’s well-established manufacturing capabilities, and the constant drive to bring innovation to the market. Waterco’s success has been driven by its pioneering fibreglass and plastic moulding techniques, as well as its efficient manufacturing processes, enabling the company to deliver high quality products at exceptional value. Boasting an impressive range of both commercial and domestic filtration, the company has sought in recent years to add to this range of products such as the money and water saving MultiCyclone prefilter, and now its larger equivalent for the commercial market, the MultiCyclone XL, capable of handling flow rates up to 90m³/hr, and invaluable tool in prolonging the life and efficacy of Available exclusively from SCP, the smooth finished white Superpool models are available in side and top mount valve options

They will filter out up to 80% of the incoming sediment from a swimming pool. The unit works together with a variety of filter types to polish the water. It allows the installation of finer filtration systems, such as cartridge filters with finer cartridges and the sand filters with finer filter media. Finer filtration systems can be installed without the burden of extra maintenance. The pool water ends up clearer with less up keep. New for next year, Waterco are bringing to the market a range of filters compliant with DIN standards in response to market feedback and the ever-competitive requirement to stay at the forefront of industry best practice standards and innovation.
NATARE MICROFLO VSFS PROVIDE FILTRATION BENEFITS AND MORE! Available through Wrightfield Pools, Natare MicroFlo vacuum sand filters (VSFs) remove particles half the size of particles removed by other systems. This means cleaner, clearer, and more satisfactory water quality. VSFs do not require coagulants, flocculants, or other expensive filter aids to produce excellent water quality and MicroFlo VSFs actually removes organic compounds from pool Waterco’s MultiCyclone XL is an invaluable tool in prolonging the life of traditional commercial filtration systems

water, including the precursors to chloramines and the combined chlorines that cause eye irritation and poor sanitation. Operating costs are reduced too, as a VSF uses atmospheric pressure to do the work. Because the pump is located after the media bed, the entire system operates at a high efficiency. Smaller pumps can be used and the configuration eliminates the wasteful high pressure environment of typical pressure filters. The benefits don’t stop there though. When it comes to installation, Natare preengineered systems can reduce construction time by over 80%. The entire filtration plant is designed and manufactured under controlled conditions and is shipped to the project site as a complete unit. VSFs are complete with all required pumps, valves, controls and media, certified to produce excellent water quality and economical operation. In addition, a Natare pool mechanical system featuring a VSF can reduce building space or footprint by over 75% when compared to typical pressure filters and pressure filtration mechanical plants. SWIM SPAS – ENTRY-LEVEL The Mardi Gras from Catalina Spas comes as standard with both Catalina’s Pro-Swim tether system and their Exercise Equipment pack
Party, Relax, Swim – The Choice Is Yours
For customers that want to both relax and occasionally exercise in water, entry-level swim spas ticks each box. Increasingly chosen as a replacement for a traditional small pool, these counter-current equipped products are often referred to as party spas and are aimed at budget conscious families rather than athletes that need a training aid for a serious workout. With prices starting at around £10,000, we take a look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson
A
s a product that offers all the benefits of both a small swimming pool and a hot tub in a single, affordable, easy to own package, it’s no real surprise that entry-level swim spas have fared well. As an all-in-one solution that’s aimed particularly at families that have to keep an eye on the budget, there’s a lot to like. They’re very versatile in that they provide a lot of scenarios for their owners – a pool for swimming and to work out in, an area for the kids to have fun and mess around in on a summer’s day plus a venue for a party plus a space to relax in too – and all of this without breaking the bank! As an introduction to counter-current swimming and the wider world of swim spas, they represent great value and this almost guarantees their continued success, so in this issue, we look closer at some of the models that are available as an entry point to the swim spa market.

A PREMIUM PARTY SWIM SPA FROM SCP SCP UK have been developing their swim spa range over a number of years with their long standing American manufacturers Garden Leisure and one of the newer additions to the range is their GLP 13’ Party swim spa. When launched last year, the 13ft model joined an already successful range of swim spas produced by Garden Leisure but the company said this new premium model was the biggest thing to hit the market in the last few years. It features a great swim system that is almost impossible to beat with its swim tether and exercise equipment as optional extras. Despite its size, it features bench seating all around the inside of the spa which can easily seat 10-12 people, making it (as its name would suggest) the perfect swim spa for entertaining friends and family. With the powerful 4kW heater, users can go from swimming temp to hot tub temp
in no time at all, owners and their guests won’t be kept waiting! The GLP 13’ Party swim spa is available in a choice of three cabinet colours: Espreso, Grey and Black. Joining it this year was the premium GLP1300 swim spa, meaning the SCP are now able to offer a wide choice of Garden Leisure models across a variety of price points. ACTIVE-PLUS EP-12 – THE STARTING POINT OF THE TIDALFIT RANGE
AN ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL WHICH SPORTS HIGH-END LOOKS
Artesian Spas released its first TidalFit swim spa model, the EP-14, back in 2008 and since then they have introduced a wide range of quality models to suit all swim spa needs and budgets. Their 12ft Active-Plus EP-12 joined the successful range in 2015, taking its place as the entry-level option in the four model EP swim spa series. The Active-Plus EP-12 offers a choice of two different adjustable swim jets, both providing a variable swim current perfect for light and strong swimmers alike. The exercise element of the TidalFit does not end there though as stationary resistant swim tether and/or rowing bars plus resistant cords are all available for the ultimate workout. Standard features include an advanced digital control system, a maintenance free Kingwood cabinet that is both beautiful and durable, an 18” grab rail for stability during a workout and a 3kW heater. For those with a bit more in the budget, the EP-12 is available with an optional hydrotherapy system which includes 28 Helix Jets, a 3hp 1-Spd pump and a BellagioFall water feature and for owners who want to turn it into more of a party spa, both multicolour LED and DynaBrite LED lighting is available plus there’s a choice of sound options too – a Bluetooth Music Experience Stereo or a bba™ Bluetooth Audio System. The EP-12 can be placed above-ground or semi in-ground and with its shell available in three colour options and cabinet in six, designing the perfect swim spa for any setting is easy.
Over recent years, the Wellis brand has gone from strength-to-strength and in 2016, the European manufacturer added swim spas to its expanding range following a major increase to the company’s manufacturing capacity. The Wellis swim spa range consists of a number of models but one of the most important features across the entire range is that all of their swim spas have a depth of 1.5m and a width of 2.3m. This consistent specification allows users of all their swim spas, regardless of the model chosen, to have the perfect swimming experience. In addition, all of Wellis’ swim spa models sport the EveRest premium design elements, taken from their successful hot tub model. This result in outstanding looks across the range of swim spas and superior comfort for all users. Their entry-level model is called the Danube. This 4m long exercise pool is available with a single river jet in the

WELLNESS With more than half a century of experience, Harvia knows exertly how to combine the relaxing elements of nature – wood, stone and water
An Investment Well Worth Making Once an experience to be enjoyed on holiday or by visiting a leisure club, spa or hotel, it seems that for many, the temptation to invest in sauna, steam and other wellness products for both commercial and increasingly domestic settings is now proving irresistible. Despite still being somewhat of a niche sector, it’s one that is growing and this issue we focus on the various options on offer that together make up the wellness offering By Andrea Hartshorne
W
e all want to feel well and at our best, both mentally and physically, as feeling 100% means we have a better chance of a positive mood and that we can achieve anything including tackling the day-to-day trials and trivialities. With current technologies, life just seems to get busier and more complicated. So, the opportunity to switch off and while away an hour or two using the wellness facilities provided by a health club, spa or home sauna appears to be the perfect remedy to modern life. And it seems more and more of us in the UK are embracing the options on offer – a fact supported by suppliers to the wellness sector. Golden Coast, through their annual State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey results, have seen a clear year-on-year expansion for saunas to the consumer market and Hygromatik have noticed changes to the sector too, with Andie Chessun, their National Sales Manager for UK & RoI commenting:

“Recently we have seen the rise of the ‘break up retreat’ in response to the growing trend of holidays following a divorce or period of stress. Similarly, the concept of the home spa is developing and making a significant change to how we view our bathrooms.” So with the UK public quite rightly appreciating and prioritising the importance of both mental and physical health, the trend for wellness solutions in both homes and spas looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.
ADVANCEMENTS IN STEAM WELLNESS FROM HYGROMATIK Spas, which were once considered an indulgence reserved for the elite, are fast becoming the ultimate way to relax and unwind. From quick sessions for the busy professional to weekend retreats, spas and the facilities they provide continue to evolve. With these advances in mind it comes as no surprise that in our digital age, technology remains one of the biggest trends in the
wellness industry. Increasingly sophisticated technology is being used to enhance, adapt and administer traditional treatments, with steam being an essential component. The increased automation and functionality offered by today’s steam generators ensures the delivery of the precise temperature and humidity required to soothe sore muscles and aid rejuvenation. And with a steam generator installed outside of the steam room, greater control to meet personal preferences inside the steam room is provided. Full colour touchscreen controls that are intuitive to operate and programme make it easier to add more steam, customise temperature and manage other variables for bespoke needs, such as controlling the aromas from the essence pump. In addition to providing precision, today’s state-of-the-art controls will adjust energy settings to match the available water quality, which in turn lowers maintenance

EXTRAORDINARY DESIGN CONCEPTS FROM KLAFS Products produced by KLAFS send a clear signal again and again – design, inventive talent and extraordinary concepts are the main reasons why the company has become an innovation driver within the sauna and spa industry. The latest outcome of this inventive talent is truly a revolution for the sauna market – their S1 sauna, the world’s first sauna to retract at the touch of a button – just like the zoom lens on a camera. The key highlight of this sauna is its minimal space requirements. In its fully retracted position the S1 is a mere 60cm deep, just like the average cupboard or wardrobe. Yet the S1 is a really stylish, high quality, beautifully designed sauna down to the last detail and with room for the whole family. The S1 is an extremely spectacular, but in the end, only the latest chapter of a longterm success story for the German-based company which was founded in 1928. Working with clients around the world, KLAFS endeavours to meet and exceed the rising expectations of a variety of customers. In order to meet growing demands and implement the many sauna and spa ideas of architects and builders as best as possible, KLAFS has constantly expanded its range of services. From the basic concept to the finetuning, from interior fittings to the completed operation, KLAFS specialists take care of many different customer requests. COMPANY PROFILE Over the last six years the firm has doubled in size and we looking to grow by another 50% in the next four years both in turnover and headcount.” Devin Consulting provides a unique combination of independence and engineering expertise in the specialist design areas of: • Swimming pool water treatment for excellent water quality • Movable floors and booms for flexibility of use • Swimming pool tanks whether for fast competition pools or high end • Water and air features for relaxation and fun • Thermal cabins for the complete spa experience • Decorative water features.
and be able to see what is going on below them. The new pool will be made out of a special high-grade acrylic material which will be joined together with invisible joints. Commenting on the project, Tom Devin said: “We don’t believe there is a pool like this anywhere else in the world.” In those early days back in 2000 the business started out as a swimming pool water treatment consultancy but quickly expanded. Within a year they had moved to new offices with three staff and had 21 projects on their books. The rapid development now sees Devin Consulting based in larger premises overlooking the River Tyne in Newcastle and employing 18 people across management, engineering and administration. They have designed hundreds of pools worldwide from Dublin, Dubai and Delhi to Azerbaijan and rubber-stamped their credentials by being brought in to provide the specialist design of the world-renowned Aquatic Centre for the London 2012 Olympics. The Centre has three major treatment plants serving the two 50m pools and the 25m diving pool. The significant water volumes from filter backwashing would normally go straight to waste but Devin designed a backwash water treatment system to recover the backwash water for reuse in toilet flushing throughout the venue – adding value and saving cost. As part of the legacy of the games the award-winning venue was opened to the local community. The two swimming pools, diving pool and other facilities have now been used by over two million people and the venue has also staged a series of major sporting events, the most recent being the London 2016 LEN European Aquatics Championships. Each year an estimated 65 million bathers benefit from Devin Consulting’s water treatment systems which have been designed
to provide safe and excellent water quality. The business may be best known for swimming pools and spas but since 2007 it has also designed, specified and overseen several water features. Developments include Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland with work on the Grand Cascade and several other interactive features. The latest project is a dry plaza fountain in Croydon with 50 dancing illuminated water jets. Alongside Managing Director Tom Devin with responsibility for Business Development, the management team at Devin Consulting includes Colin Dougall and Chris Graham for Operations. The business is quality assessed to ISO9001:2015 and all design engineers are BIM qualified. Quality systems control for all stages of a project includes design, site monitoring and independent sign-off of the commissioning. Speaking about the achievement and the remarkable growth of the company, Tom Devin said: “To reach our 500th project is a remarkable milestone and we are now looking forward to the next 500. “We have a strategic plan in place to ensure that our growth will continue.

REPAIRS & RENOVATION
Keeping Up Appearances Maintaining the looks of any kind of pool or spa requires some effort on the part of owners but as time goes by, often the only solution to ensure use is a complete makeover. Thankfully, specialist products and processes combined with expert knowledge mean that the downtime for any repair, refurbishment or renovation is often not as disruptive as it once was and we highlight some of the solutions By Jon Wadeson
T
o keep any pool looking at glorious best and in use requires varying degrees of ongoing maintenance. But whilst products that affect the performance of a pool are generally hidden away, a pool’s looks are in plain sight and there’s nothing more unappealing than one that looks like it’s clearly seen better days. Worse still is a pool which is obviously not 100% safe and requires repairs to tiling or other features. A pool that can’t be appreciated is a real shame, but more than that, it’s a waste and so too is the investment made in it. Arguably that’s not so much of a problem for a back garden pool which may only see a few days use during a warm summer, but for many other pool environments, there’s a need for use every day of the week and a pool which can’t be used causes disruption to schedules, creates a drop in revenues and can often ruin a hard-earned reputation too. Thankfully, there are numerous companies across the industry who offer tried and tested products and services to efficiently and costeffectively improve the aesthetics, function and often safety of pools, whilst minimising the downtime which will inevitably occur.

Certikin can also manufacture bespoke items from HDPE such as manhole covers, drain covers, inlet covers and steam diffusers. Certikin’s HDPE has proved a massive success story thanks to the company investing in the impressively named and sizeable Maxi-m5 2030 twin head, twin ATC precision CNC Router at Certikin’s HQ in Witney, Oxfordshire. This mega machine allows for a high manufacturing output and fantastic product versatility. Neil Garner, Certikin’s Production Manager said: “We have a range of 16 different tools to choose from and each tool is ingeniously and automatically selected by the machine’s computer, facilitating very complex machining. It’s this which makes it the best in the marketplace.”
PLASTICA’S EXTREME™ POOL LINING SOLUTION TRANSFORMS LEAKING POOLS On-site pool lining is an increasingly popular choice for pool repairs because it can be undertaken all year round and is not restricted by the weather. Plastica’s Extreme™ Pool Lining system has been used for on site lining for over 3,500 pools in the UK and abroad. Pat Devaney, the Extreme™ Manager at Plastica, said: “It’s the ideal solution for renovating leaking commercial and residential pools, as well as new builds. The benefit of this system is that, with no curing or drying time to wait for, the average domestic pool would be re-filling after 3 days.” The unique and flexible Extreme™ liner is

a 1.5mm reinforced non-slip PVC material. It’s perfect for even the most heavily used public pools and complex shaped private pools. The material is cut on site and the over-lapped edges are fused together using specialised hot-air welding equipment. Once tested, the seams are finished with liquid PVC. The material is secured around the perimeter of the pool floor and not bonded to the pool structure. This allows it to absorb any movement in a flexible or cracked shell and is ideal for leaking concrete and tiled pools. Pat added: “The liner will not crack, is unaffected by frost and ice, is easy to maintain and scratch resistant.” Plastica’s Extreme™ liners are guaranteed for pools for
10 years up to 32°C, as well as 5 years for hydrotherapy use up to 35°C. You don’t have to trade this remarkable durability for looks either as there is a wide choice of patterns and colours, as well as motifs and racing lanes available.

TIME TO HIT THE HOLIDAY PARK REFRESH BUTTON!
Offering sterling service for nigh on 40 years, Hoburne Devon Bay Holiday Park’s main 24m x 10m swimming pool and toddler’s paddling pool had long since seen better days and was in need of a thorough refurbishment and some TLC. Starting out in life as a tiled

pool, it had at some point in its long history been fibreglass-lined but was now leaking badly and in dire need of repair. Enter Torbay-based pool dealer,
RS Pools Ltd whose Managing Director, Robin Simpson, without hesitation recommended on-site lining and promptly made a call to Certikin. “Site lining was the only way to waterproof the pools fully and the holiday park’s brief was for a speedy and fussfree solution,” said Robin. Certikin’s on site lining team took just under two weeks to transform the tired, leaking pools into shining examples of what a holiday park pool should look like and that is inviting… come rain or shine! Robin added: “Certikin’s on site lining more than met mine and the park’s expectations. I have a very happy customer and, in turn, the park has many happy holiday-
makers.” Certikin’s on-site lining is suitable for all pools, whether old or new, domestic or commercial. It can accommodate complex shapes, steps, ledges, pits etc. Any pool fittings need to be liner fittings so if the pool is not an existing liner pool some conversion is required. If conversion is not possible, purpose made HDPE clamping plates may be used. Robust and durable, as a commercial grade material its longevity is a major advantage compared to thinner linings or paints. REPAIRS & RENOVATION Commercial & Specialised Diving has perfected the technique of pool refurbishment without the need to drain the pool
thing to do. When a swimming pool is full of water the concrete tank is stable. However, by draining it several things can happen that will de-stabilise the structural integrity of the tank and this can lead to further problems. In addition, a pool must be drained slowly and then re-filled which extends the down time of a pool refurbishment way beyond the timescales of the work involved. In the commercial pool environment this has the added knock on effect of loss of revenue and dissatisfied users for an extended period of time. To overcome this problem, Commercial & Specialised Diving has perfected the technique of pool refurbishment without the need to drain the pool. They carry out underwater refurbishment using teams of divers and will even carry out the work overnight if required – all of their specialist materials work and cure underwater. Divers are able to cut and replace damaged and broken tiles and the company carries out re-tiling to vast areas of blown tiles – they can even re-tile the whole swimming pool if needed! Tiles are re-grouted in the pool and divers are even able to replace expansions joints without the need to drain water from the pool. Using pneumatic tools to drill and fix replacement grilles, the team at Commercial & Specialised Diving are able to bring pools up to the latest health and safety standards – they are even able to core drill a pool to install cameras and lights or fixtures and fittings, again all without the need to drain the pool.
complicated shapes and unusual sizes. It’s a site lining system which is ideal for both commercial and residential pools – and comes into its own particularly on renovation and refurbishment sites. Alkorplan’s main selling point is its exceptional strength. The material which incorporates a polyester reinforced mesh is

either 1.5mm or 2mm thick which enables it to withstand intensive use and severe knocks from even the most enthusiastic swimmers. It also has a special formula that includes a UV stabilising treatment which can withstand exposure to all extremes of weather, retaining its properties year after year. Guaranteed for ten years, with a life expectancy nearer 15 to 20 years, Aquaflex’s Alkorplan pool lining system can be used on new or existing constructions including concrete, cement render, brick or block, steel or aluminium, timber or fibreglass builds. Alkorplan is ready for installation in any swimming pool irrespective of shape; rectangle, oval, kidney, circular, trapezoidal, completely irregular, with or without lined step etc. This year, Aquaflex introduced three new 2mm ‘Touch’ patterns to their growing site lining range with Vanity, Sublime and Prestige options. This now extends the Touch range to six available embossed patterns with the three new patterns joining the original Elegance, Authentic and Relax options. Extending Aquaflex's textured range even further, is the new Alkorplan Ceramics range of reinforced membranes. Four options are available in this Greek mythology inspired range, and each provides the appearance of ceramic mosaic tiles.

Using techniques gained from the North Sea commercial driving industries, Universal Pool Services (UPS) is able to solve the majority of pool repair problems by working underwater, eliminating the need to drain the pool. This has major advantages over conventional methods and offers significant benefits to pool and leisure centre managers. Cost savings in the order of 80% can be expected compared with the full costs of conventional working. This is especially welcome today with competitive tendering and continual water shortages. Work carried out in the pool by conventional methods involves the cost of draining, refilling and reheating the pool and adding fresh

REPAIRS & RENOVATION chemicals. Income is lost and customers inconvenienced while the pool is closed. UPS’s solution eliminates the need to close a pool and incur extra costs and lost resources. The only cost incurred is that for the work to be completed. All UPS repair and installation contracts are carried out overnight and their personnel ensure that the pool is clean, safe and ready for customer use at the start of the next day. There’s no disruption to the customer, no loss of water, and no loss of income. Working to very exacting standards underwater demands a high level of disciplined teamwork, professionalism and equipment. Universal Pool Services fulfils these rigorous requirements admirably. As well as being experienced tradesmen, all UPS underwater diving personnel are professional divers and registered with the Health and Safety Executive as required by law. The company also carries all the relevant insurances needed for working with both Local Authorities and the private sector. Where required, all UPS equipment and materials conform to the relevant British Standard. For replacement or refurbishment projects, the company can also supply a range of ultra-safe products which are available in high performance plastic and stainless steel. The range includes deck level gratings, step assemblies, inlet diffusers and bench seating.

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS
Automation Helps To Provide Perfect Water Quality Reliable, essential and increasingly high tech, dosing pumps and control systems are the unsung heroes in any water treatment system as they quietly go about the business of delivering regular and accurate amounts of chemicals into pool and spa water. Convenient and easy to use, the automation they provide has made the life of owners and operators that much simpler and we roundup what’s available By Karen Witney
T
hanks to advances in technology, automatic dosing and control systems have significantly jumped forward over recent years. The accuracy, reliability and convenience of dosing chemicals make these super systems a must in commercial pools and they offer many advantages in any domestic setting too. These super supervisors of the plant room cut down the time spent on the testing of pool and spa water and avoid overdosing, meaning users and operators can be secure in the knowledge that the water is without any nasties and is safe to swim in. There’s no more guess work and the result is inviting, crystal clear water. There are a number of cost effective and fail safe products that are truly water treatment supervisors that beaver away unobtrusively in the background to deliver top notch water quality and in addition to dosing, the more advanced control systems now offer owners and operators the option to operate key equipment such as pumps, lighting heat pumps and more. In many cases, these systems can be utilised remotely too, meaning anyone, including pool companies can monitor and adjust functions when necessary. Perhaps best of all, these reliable recruits don’t take tea breaks either! So all in all, there’s a quite lot to like about the latest in automation and dosing systems and the many advantages that they provide.
GOLDEN COAST OFFER AN EASIER APPROACH TO AUTOMATIC DOSING Ask any owner the downsides of running a pool and chances are that chemical level management appears high in their list. But, according to Golden Coast, it need not be this way. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “Automatic chemical dosing
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 69_70_72&74_SPN_Dec_2017_Dosing_Pumps.indd 69
can be a blessing for pool owners. It saves time on testing, avoids dosage mistakes and ensures water is always clean and clear. With so many benefits, it’s hardly surprising that we’re seeing such clear growth in demand for pool dosing systems. “But while it can be a great profit centre for pool companies, not all companies are equipped to deliver the dedicated, specialist knowledge or resources required to meet this growing need. The extra staff, knowledge and training it demands can appear more hassle than it’s worth – despite the potential profits. “That’s why we have two great ways of making automatic dosing that bit easier for you… and your customers.” Launched earlier this year, Golden Coast’s exclusive outsourcing service Crystal gives pool companies automatic dosing specialists… without increasing overheads (or causing headaches). Crystal’s team of experienced engineers are equipped to handle the whole process: from conducting a free on-site survey to specifying equipment and service requirements right through to delivering a planned maintenance schedule. Jamie adds: “We’ve designed Crystal to make things easier for you, as well as your customers. It really is the best of both worlds.” The company also custom control panels, and while many things that are custom may be viewed as luxury, it makes good economic and practical sense when you’re installing control panels for automatic dosing.
Golden Coast’s Crystal outsourcing service gives customers custom fit control with expert handling from on-site survey to planned maintenance schedules
“They’re a real game-changer,” said Jamie, explaining: “With off-the-shelf products, you often pay for functions that will never be used, while sacrificing ones you need. Choosing custom-built panels, you get exactly what’s needed and the options allow you to both monitor and control your dosing system.”

Featuring potentiostatic free chlorine, pH and temperature measurement along with automatic sample water regulation, the chloriDES® offers impressive accuracy and reliability without complexity for the user. With a simple, easy to use menu and on-screen graphical display of log data, optimising a pool’s disinfection system becomes a much simpler task. To make life easier for the installer a relay interface module is included as standard in the chloriDES® package, allowing connection of virtually any type and size of chemical dosing pump. Gaffey’s range of ChemiDOS™ motor and solenoid driven chemical dosing
pumps offer industrial build quality and are a robust solution for dosing calcium or sodium hypochlorite, acids and flocculants. Choosing the best type of dosing pump for the application along with the correct accessories, such as pressure relief/retention valves and pulsation dampers will ensure the life of the dosing pump is maximised and maintenance costs are kept low. Motor driven dosing pumps produce lower pulsation effects than solenoid pumps and are well suited for higher output volumes. They generally use larger bore suction and discharge valves, making them more suitable for the dosing of sediment laden media, such as calcium. The chemiDOS ‘Midi’ and ‘LB’ range are ideal for this purpose.
CONTROL EXPANSION FOR AQUATROL’S BECS TECHNOLOGY Innovation continues at BECS Technology. The latest developments at BECS have seen advancements that mean the BECSys range of controllers are no longer just chemical controllers. Starting with the BECSys5 and continuing with the BECSys7, BECSys controllers can now control all aspects of a swimming pool. The new control applications range from system flow rate, system pressures to balance tank levels. The BECSys5 and 7 are ideally engineered to resolve many of today’s hot topics,

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS
Aquatrol’s innovative BECSys range of controllers are engineered to do far more than chemical control alone
including safety and energy usage. One of the main safety concerns currently is the potential for entrapment, however the BECSys5 and 7 have the capability to employ a vacuum transducer, or a vacuum gauge to monitor either the filter influent pressure, or strainer/drain vacuum. For energy savings, the patented VFD control technology and total dynamic head monitoring combines with flow rate sensors and alternative set points to assure optimal and efficient circulation pump operation, thus reducing energy usage and maintaining optimal water quality. Indoor facilities can also benefit from combined chlorine level monitoring and UV intensity level control. The latest PWTAG guidelines have clear turbidity and TDS requirements. Using the BECSys5 and 7, turbidity can be monitored and PAC dosing and TDS levels controlled. This capability means that all requirements can be measured and controlled, and as a result a pool operator can be confident of the water quality in their swimming pool. For extra peace of mind, all the above functions can be monitored remotely using BECSys for Windows and the BECS NOW! app, which is available in Android and iOS formats.
ETATRON – SPECIALISTS IN CHEMICAL DOSING SYSTEMS THAT JUST WORK Practical things are simple, and everybody

Simplicity is the key word at Etatron. Its all about making life easier for customers and so their products are straightforward to build and simple to operate
wants something that “just works” and this applies everywhere in life, not just in chemical dosing. When something works it often works in a simple way, but when something breaks everything becomes complicated. Therefore, people naturally choose simplicity – and that’s why Etatron do everything they can to make things simple. Their products are straightforward to build and simple to operate, as nobody wants a product which is overly complicated. Some chemical dosing systems have technical aspects to them which often, just aren’t needed – and no one needs to pay for a product they don’t truly need! Take the Etatron DLX range of solenoid dosing pumps. They feature flow rates of up to 20 L/h and have a variety of control methods including 4-20 mA, water meter, pH, RX and CI regulation. When equipped with a PVDF head, they are a true work-horse of chemical dosing and exemplify Etatron’s “no bells and whistles” design philosophy. For smaller domestic pools and spas there are various options available including the ePool series of peristaltic pumps. Featuring built-in pH and RX control, these energy efficient pumps have a flow rate of 3 L/h. To assist in choosing the correct solution, Etatron GB have redeveloped and updated their website and with mobile users in mind, their product catalogue is available with a few thumb swipes with small-screen friendly
documentation and technical manuals. So whatever Etatron product is needed or used, all information is now available at a second’s notice from the palm of the hand. When it comes to customer service Etatron always aim to give technical support right there and then to the person on the other end of the phone. Likewise, they aim to quote rapidly (on the day or the next day) and accurately.
CERTIKIN OFFERS 5 STEP APPROACH TO AUTOMATIC DOSING Having one supplier to deal with every step of the way could improve efficiency and minimise potential on site nightmares, therefore Certikin’s CertiChem division offer a five step approach to automatic dosing. This consists of: managing and quantifying the enquiry, a site survey, specification and quotation, managing the instruction to proceed and lastly, on site support and Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM). “It isn’t unusual to receive an enquiry that contains minimal information,” said CertiChem’s Manager Vanessa Lloyd, adding: “Understanding why the client has chosen to invest in the equipment and what they hope to gain and overcome is invaluable in terms of kit selection. “What type of application is it, is there a preference for chemicals, why have these chemicals been selected, what are the training requirements for on site staff,

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS have risk assessments and method statements (RA MS) been considered?” Once these details have been established through quantifying the initial perhaps along with a site survey, the specification can be drawn up and quoted. The CertiDos range includes components right from injectors up to multi parameter controllers with remote connectivity functionality and the CertiChem team will happily quote full system packages. Once ordered, a single delivery containing everything required for the installation then occurs. There are points to consider from here on in which will help with managing the clients expectations and ensuring the job goes smoothly. If a site survey was performed, there may have been points raised that need to be addressed. As a minimum, CertiChem have a check list of actions which helps the customer and the end client prepare in time for installation day and good communication at this stage reduces the chance of a ‘failed visit’. Preventative Maintenance is crucial for continued satisfaction with the equipment and is another opportunity to make a sale. Once the client is happy with the support and the equipment they’ve received, the hope is that they will come back for their servicing and maintenance needs and CertiChem offer a variety of services to suit their customer’s requirements. “We realise that chemical dosing isn’t everyone’s area of expertise. In fact, we know some of our customers actively avoid it,” said Vaneesa, adding: “We hear horror stories of bad experiences and vows never to install a system again. But why shouldn’t any trade customer have access to another stream of revenue?”

OPINION
Facts, Figures And Statistics To Maximise Opportunities Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams explains the importance of the annual Wet Leisure Survey – an initiative the company carries out in association with the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) – and urges businesses to participate in it
“T
he annual Wet Leisure Survey is an excellent initiative for our industry to get a snap shot of what business owners are experiencing and to identify any trends that may be happening.” I didn’t say that. It was Chris Hayes of the BSPF, but I am sure you know that I agree with him and I’d like you to feel the same way too. When we started the survey back in 2011, I wasn’t sure how successful it would be. To be honest, I felt that I was working in a fragmented industry that was still dreaming of a busier, sunnier past and refusing to look to the future and move on. I don’t feel that way now. In no way am I suggesting the Survey has changed the industry but I do think that it has recorded how the industry has changed over the years and helped us all feel that we are not working in a vacuum. Managing a business can feel like a lonely task but people have told me that reading the Survey Results makes them feel that they are sharing the same challenges as other’s in a similar position. It helps them see their own business within a wider industry perspective and it helps them make the most of the opportunities that the industry has to offer. That all sounds like a good thing. So what is this Survey all about?
Q1. WHICH REGION OF THE UK DOES YOUR BUSINESS OPERATE FROM? Each year’s Survey has typically contained about 18 questions, most of them a simple tick-the-box multiple choice and usually the questions also give respondents the opportunity to leave their own comments as well. In the first half dozen questions, the
Survey asks people to describe their business. Where it’s based, how many employees and which sectors of the wet leisure industry does the business operate in. There are two reasons for this. If you are collecting data that you want to analyse and draw conclusions from – business trends or areas of growth – then it is good practice to know roughly what sort of people are giving you those answers. The first six questions also give an interesting picture of the sort of businesses that are operating in our industry, the shape of them if you will, and what trends are affecting them. For instance, over the six years of the Survey, there have been changes to the typical size of business – how many employees – and when you set those changes alongside other economic factors it’s possible to see how businesses have been affected by good summers and bad, periods of recession as well as growth. It’s important to remember that all Survey responses, whether they are on a paper form or online, are completely anonymous so no one can see how any individual business is doing.
Q7. ON THE FOLLOWING SCALE, HOW DID YOU FIND BUSINESS CONDITIONS THIS YEAR? Of course, this is the one that gets people’s attention. “How was it for you?” If you have a friend in the business, it’s the question you ask them when you meet up for a pint. Now imagine how interesting that question becomes when you get people from all over the country answering it. The Survey digs down into how good, or bad, a year has been. Have we refurbished

more old pools than built new ones? Are swim spas showing increased popularity? What about saunas? That sort of industry wide picture can help you decide where to focus your business efforts over the next year. And that’s what the Survey is all about. It’s about growing the industry so that everyone who works in it can profit.
USING MARKET INFORMATION TO GROW THE INDUSTRY Other industries have facts, figures and statistics that are available to all and they help people make better decisions and grow better businesses. We should be the same. But what does Golden Coast get out of it? Nothing apart from a stronger, bigger and more profitable industry for us to do business with. We have always believed that for us to succeed our customers have to be doing well and this is one of the ways that we try to help them.
YOU’VE CONVINCED ME. WHERE CAN I FIND A SURVEY FORM? At least I hope that’s what you are thinking right now. The BSPF will send you a Survey form through the post if you are a member. If you go to wetleisure.com then you can take the survey online there. You’ll find a link to the form on the home page. Golden Coast will be promoting the Survey to our contacts and customers and there will be links to the online Survey in Facebook ads and in our newsletter and there is a link to the Survey on the home page of goldenc.com And, thank you. The people who are most important to the success of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey are the ones who fill it out. The more people who respond to the survey, the more accurate and useful the results are. And that will do nothing but help all of us. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
