SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.
Awards. As one of a number of Judges for them, I’m pleased to report that there were several UK successes and we’ve coverage of all the winners in this issue. Also in this final issue of the year, we look at dosing pumps and control systems, products which are somewhat unglamorous and are often operating behind the scenes, but which play an essential part in any efficient water treatment system and help to make the lives of pool and spa owners a lot easier.

With temperatures having dropped over the last few weeks, and with wind, rain and in some places snow now making an appearance, the warmer days of what was a fantastic summer are already becoming a fading memory. The 2018 season will certainly be one which is remembered fondly by the industry though and I hope that this year’s successes continue into the New Year and through the 2019 season. Before then though, I suspect I’m not the only one looking forward to a well-earned break and a mince pie or two – I know my colleagues are! Since the last edition of SPN, yet another major global event has taken place. Thankfully, and for a change, this one didn’t include politics (well not in the traditional sense at least) and it’s not something you’ll have seen repeated daily on the evening news either. That event was, of course, the biennial Piscine Global Europe exhibition held in France. For those who have never attended what is now the world’s largest wet leisure show, it’s fair to say it can be a bit of an eye-opener. It’s an exhibition which attracts thousands of visitors from around the world to see hundreds of exhibitors and their products. People travel from far and wide to talk about services, trends and innovations. Many companies utilise the four-day show to unveil their latest pieces of pool and spa equipment for the coming season, while others use it as the stage to release important corporate announcements. Throughout this edition, we’ve a number of pieces of information that were gathered from an interesting week in France. Lyon’s Eurexpo also was the location for the presentation of the 2018 EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations)
At the other end of the product spectrum, we look at the wellness options, especially saunas and steam. It’s a sector which is often perceived as glamorous, and which is growing at an incredible rate thanks to becoming increasingly accessible to, and accepted by, the masses. Entry-level swim and party spas are also featured in this latest edition and there’s a separate feature on counter-current systems – products which are increasingly finding their way into many a small pool space. Of course, we’ve also got all the latest industry news from both here in the UK and further afield too plus the STA’s Luke Griffiths looks back on how pool and spa plant training has developed over the last 12 months and discusses what’s coming up in 2019. Finally, there’s also content from the BSPF including coverage of the recent SPATA and BISHTA Networking Days which incorporate each association’s AGM. With my roundup complete, I trust there’s something of interest for all of SPN’s readers and in the weeks ahead, hopefully there will be time to kick back, appreciate the festivities and of course, enjoy this latest edition. Have a great break and see you in 2019!

Winchester Sports And Leisure Park Plans Are Set To Go Ahead Architects and consultants have taken a major step forward in the delivery of a new Sport and Leisure Centre in Winchester. The new complex, that encompasses the existing athletics stadium and park, was recommended for approval by the Planning Committee at the end of October with formal approval expected soon after. Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Lisa Griffiths said: “This is absolutely fantastic news and I am really delighted that the project has been granted planning approval. This outcome reflects all of the effort and work that has gone into our thorough and inclusive engagement and resulting high-quality design.” Within the Centre, there will be a wide range of new facilities including a 50m swimming pool, as well as a teaching pool and splash area for beginners. It will also include an eight court multi-use sports hall, various studios, squash courts as well as a hydrotherapy suite with a pool that can be used to treat people with a wide range of disabilities and injuries. The building has been designed to provide a high level of sustainability and will be seen as a gateway into the historic City of Winchester. Work is expected to start on site
in spring 2019. Mike Lawless, Director of LA architects, said: “As the architects and lead consultant on this project, LA architects is delighted that the Winchester Sport & Leisure Centre has passed this key planning milestone. The journey from the start has been one of engagement and dialogue with the people of the Winchester District in the development of the design that will now move forward.”

Icing On The Cake For City Pool Workers An iconic Newcastle landmark is celebrating reaching the ripe old age of 90 – with a slice of cake and a facelift! Workers at Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths joined in the celebrations, taking a well-deserved break from restoring the building to its former glory, to blow out the 90 candles. The facility – which holds fond memories for many people – opened in November 1928. The building will be given a new lease of life following a £5m refurbishment by Fusion Lifestyle, a sports and leisure management organisation and registered charity. In preparation for the celebrations, Fusion trawled the archives and uncovered the original souvenir brochure dating back to 7 November 1928. The booklet commemorates the opening of the building along with the City Hall, with pictures and information about the original building. Anthony Cawley, Operations Director at
4 December 2018 SPN 4+10_SPN_Dec_18_News_General.indd 4
Fusion Lifestyle, said: “We thought it was only right to celebrate this important milestone with the workers who are bringing it back to life. “This building has been an important part of the city’s history for nearly a century and we’re cementing its future in Newcastle for years to come.” Even though the building is 90 years old, the history of baths on this site goes back even further, to when famous Newcastle son, John Dobson, built private baths in 1838 at a cost of £9,500. Fusion secured planning permission and listed building consent from Newcastle City Council in 2016 after spotting the historic venue thanks to the community campaign to save the building by the Re-open Newcastle Turkish Baths & City Pool Group. When the work is complete, the venue will feature a public pool and Turkish baths, fitness suites, exercise studios, a spa with treatment rooms and a café bistro.

NEWS DAWN OF A NEW ERA FOR NORTHAMPTONSHIRE POOL It was still dark outside as the first swimmers took to the new six-lane 25-metre swimming pool for an early morning swim at Brackley Leisure Centre on Monday 12 November. The new pool is part of a multi-million pound revamp which also includes a 13-metre x 7-metre learner pool and a 110 station Fitness Room. Cllr Karen Cooper, South Northamptonshire Council’s portfolio holder for wellbeing, said: “SNC promised Brackley a new pool and we have delivered it. It has been years in the making with a great deal of hard work by Council officers, Legacy Leisure and their contractors. But finally the town has the swimming pools it deserves. “The new pool is light, inviting, and a space that you want to spend time in. I hope it encourages more people than ever to take the plunge and adopt a new healthy lifestyle.”
A Landmark Leisure Building For Coventry A £36.7m water park is being built on the former Spire House site right in the city centre and will replace Coventry’s existing Grade II-listed 1966 central swimming pool, which will close once the new structure opens in 2019, during their year as City of Sport. Newcastle-based architects FaulknerBrowns have designed the circular building which will include a 25m swimming pool, 120 station fitness suite, climbing wall, squash courts, health suites, dance studio and a day spa. For the adventurous, there is a wave pool and nine slides including the Navigator – a waterpark version of a roller coaster which has both uphill and downhill drops. For the younger visitor there is a splash pad zone with features and slides, plus a lazy river. The city council was keen to ensure that the facility has easy access areas for people with mobility issues and is confident that this will be one
FIRST DESIGNS EMERGE FOR NEW READING POOL An important planning document which will help shape proposals to build a new community swimming pool at Palmer Park in Reading is set to go out to public consultation. The draft framework provides two options for the development of the new pool. The first is to join the new pool to the existing stadium building. The second focuses on the principle of re-using the existing building and attaching the new pool onto the front. Both options form part of the consultation process. Earlier this year Reading Borough Council began a procurement process to identify a single leisure provider to improve and operate all its indoor leisure facilities and the Palmer Park development forms a major part of the ongoing process.

of the most accessible water parks in the UK. “We have been able to put together a high profile design team with an international reputation,” said Councillor Kevin Maton, cabinet member for Business, Enterprise and Employment. “We were clear in the brief that we want a landmark building – appropriate for our city centre – not the usual type of design used out of town in other areas.” Surveyors Appleyard & Trew, project managers Hadron, and mechanical and engineering services firm Desco are all involved in the project. Structural engineering is provided by Engenuiti, while the specialist aquatic engineering for the pools, water features, rides and spa is being carried out by Devin Consulting. Tom Devin, Managing Director of Devin Consulting said: “This new state-of-the-art facility will be a massive draw and will attract people from the whole region in to the city centre. This waterpark has something for everyone and we’re delighted to have had the opportunity to apply our expertise.” Devin Consulting 0191 258 1653 www.devin-consulting.com
Show Your Support For The Wet Leisure Industry Survey The ISPE has become the latest organisation to join the groundswell of support for Golden Coast’s annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey, which includes leading authorities SPATA, BISHTA and the BSPF, as well as the sector’s key publications including SPN. Open to businesses across the sector, this year’s survey can be completed quickly, easily and anonymously now via www. wetleisure.com Since 2011, the survey has
created an opportunity for the industry to speak individually and collectively, as Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “When we first conceived the idea of an industry survey, our aim was simple. Other industries and markets have facts, figures and statistics that are available to all and they help people make better decisions and grow better businesses. We should be the same. “By taking a moment to take
part, you’re contributing to a huge pool of shared knowledge, which is freely available to everyone in the industry at wetleisure.com.” With results from every year available to view now, www.wetleisure.com offers opportunities to spot trends, as well as benchmark your business’ performance. Results from this year’s survey will be released – in the form of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey Report – at SPATEX and online.

The future of Barry Road swimming pool in Northampton, which has taught generations of local children to swim has been secured after a contractor to manage the facility has been selected by Northamptonshire County Council. Northamptonshire based swimming organisation Aqualight will run the pool on the grounds of Barry Primary School in a new ten-year contract. Barry Primary School has made the decision for the running and maintenance of the pool to be transferred to the county council. It was thought that uncertain costs of maintaining a pool presented too much financial risk to the budget of a single school. Since then, the council has been working hard with the school to keep the pool open and find a contractor to operate it on a long-term basis. The pool which dates back to 1903 and has been open for lessons and private hires for decades will see further investment to enhance facilities, adding to the significant maintenance improvements already made by the council.
STONE LEISURE CENTRE OFFICIALLY TOPPED OUT! The topping out ceremony for a new multi-million-pound leisure centre in Stone, Staffordshire, took place in early November. ‘Topping out’ traditionally refers to the installation of the final piece of the roof on a building and Patrick Farrington, the Leader of Stafford Borough Council, marked the occasion by laying the last shovel of ballast on the roof of the new Stone Leisure Centre. The new facility is part of an almost £10m leisure investment for the town and brings together a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, gym and fitness studios, all under one roof.

Operator Makes A Splash At National Awards A national swim and leisure operator has made a splash after taking home one of the industry’s most prestigious aquatic awards. Everyone Active has been named as Facility Operator of the Year at the 2018 Swim England National Awards. It is the eighth time that the sports and leisure operator has been given the title by Swim England (formerly known as the Amateur Swim Association) at the event that celebrates excellence in the aquatic industry and the work of exceptional organisations and individuals. 2018 has been incredibly successful for Everyone Active. Since the start of the year, it has added 12 swimming pools to its existing 97 aquatic sites after beginning new contracts with five local authority and Trust partners. These new acquisitions, combined with continued investment in wet-side facilities, means Everyone Active now helps more than 136,000 people to learn a life-saving skill every week as part of its acclaimed Learn to Swim Programme. It also works with 2,000 primary schools to deliver school swimming lessons to over 60,000 young people. As well as its efforts to engage more people in aquatic activity, Everyone Active was also acknowledged for the work it does to provide progression and development opportunities to its swim colleagues by giving them access to top-class training and esteemed qualifications.

County Durham Spa Wins Big For Wellness A leading North East spa has risen to the top at one of the industry’s top awards evenings. The Spa at Ramside, at County Durham’s Ramside Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa has been awarded first place in the Best for Wellness category at the prestigious Good Spa Guide Awards. The spa, which has a five bubble rating from the guide, beat competition including the Bath’s Thermae Bath Spa and Bulgari Spa at London’s Knightsbridge to secure the top award in its category. The first in the UK to become part of the Wellness for Cancer organisation, the spa offers an extensive range of treatments for people dealing with cancer and has been praised by Macmillan nurses. With multi-award winning facilities and five pools, including a hydrotherapy pool, bubble pool, 25-metre swimming pool, outdoor vitality pool and an infinity pool,
the spa also offers yoga classes as part of its mindfulness programme. With a new customer-focused concept recently launched, Devonbased Lighthouse has been travelling the country over the last few weeks with a display trailer in tow. Affectionately named the ‘burger van’, the trailer is fully kitted out with Zodiac equipment running on a sealed system. This allows Lighthouse’s John Whiteside and Dan Phillips to present the whole range of Zodiac products in a working environment to trade customers without them having to take time out of their busy days to travel to a seminar venue. “The trailer has been well received especially when we turn up with croissants and coffee,” explained Dan. “The customers really appreciate that we have turned the tables and are now visiting them with the technical seminar trailer, on a date and time that suits them. Being fully plumbed and operational it allows us to go through in depth, the technical aspects of the products and ensure that they have the knowledge to confidently sell Zodiac to their customers. “On top of this we have some great new products for 2019 including LED niche less lights, a new sand filter and the Z400 to mention a few.” With limited availability and dates for the van being snapped up quickly, members of the trade who want to see Dan or John should contact Lighthouse soon to book a slot and ensure they are at the front of the queue! Planning Approval For New Leisure Centre In Hackney
Hackney Council has received planning approval from the Local Planning Authority – pending second stage approval from the GLA – for a state-ofthe-art leisure centre next to Shoreditch Park, London. The leisure centre has been designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects and will replace the existing Britannia Leisure Centre, which will remain open until the new centre is complete. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio is responsible for the masterplan for the whole site, including the design of housing and a new school. The new leisure centre will include a six-lane, 25m main pool; training pool; leisure water plus other sports and fitness facilities including two tennis courts and two 5-a-side football pitches located on the roof of the building. The design proposal represents a considered approach to the horizontal layering of the required leisure facilities. Minimising the building’s overall footprint in this way has allowed for a new public square to be created on the northern edge of the site.
The principles of inclusivity and accessibility have played a significant role in the design strategy for the new centre. As a result the toilet and changing accommodation within the wet and dry changing areas has been designed to provide choice. Visitors are able to select the environment which best suits their needs, from individual wet and dry changing accommodation, with dedicated showers and toilets in the dry changing areas, to group changing facilities. Commenting on the new facilities, Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney, said: “The current leisure centre simply doesn’t deliver the standard of provision or access that Hackney’s diverse communities expect, need and deserve now and in the future. The new centre will be better in almost every way and preserves many of the family friendly elements we know that people value.” FaulknerBrowns Architects 0191 268 3007 www.faulknerbrowns.co.uk
West Country Pool Builder Celebrates 45 Year Anniversary Back in 1973, a fresh-faced 21-year-old Rob Bateman had just finished his electrical apprenticeship at R.A. Lister Company in Dursley. Armed with ambition, ideas and a desire to learn, he told his young wife Sue the words that would shape the course of their lives in a way that neither could have imagined at the time: “I know how I’m going to make my money – building swimming pools.” Fast forward 45 years and you’ll find Rio Pools – one of the UK’s leading swimming pool builders, with a reputation and reviews as gleaming as the water in their bespoke creations. The company is a thriving family business whose strong bonds and dedication attract a varied clientele of the rich and famous or customers who are keen to add a little Costa del Sol to their homes. To celebrate this anniversary, staff at the West Country company secretly produced a light-hearted YouTube video. The trip down memory lane is a look back at the 45 years of 11-hour labour intensive days, working weekends, and sheer grit and determination that turned a passing comment into a success story. With over 1,500 pools built over the years and coverage in major publications such as The Financial Times and The Telegraph, the business has blossomed from humble beginnings and now employs 19 people. Today, Rio is a close-knit, smoothly operating team, providing a service that people live, bringing the best of family, skills, and knowledge together in one final gleaming product. But behind it all lies one man’s ambition. Rob’s determination, dedication and most importantly, passion for great quality pools is what makes Rio the company it is today. Putting Improvements In The Spotlight With refurbishment continuing to dominate the domestic and commercial swimming pool markets, the best way to capitalise on this growing business is to draw a client’s attention to the ways they can update their pools to improve their experience, according to Golden Coast. The latest results of Golden Coast’s State of the Wet Leisure Survey, which can be viewed at wetleisure.com, highlight the importance of energy saving in both markets. The trend was identified by 68% of respondents… while just 60% were simply looking to improve or update their pool.

Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “That’s why it’s important to show your customers ways to make their experience that bit cheaper, easier and more enjoyable. A pool is a significant investment, which, as an owner, you want a good return on. “Without regular updates, pools can become tired. What’s more, they can be costlier and more timeconsuming for owners. “But it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead you can inspire them by keeping them aware of products which will save them time and money, as
well as the potential savings they can expect from incorporating them. Versatile pool pumps and replacement slats for covers are just two of numerous products that should be considered for an upgrade and to help customers discover products such as these, appreciate the benefits of upgrading, and the countless ways to do it, Golden Coast has created a glossy full-colour retrofit catalogue which can be customised to include a company’s logo and contact details – enabling business and their services to be seen in the best light. NEWS TRAFFORD MASTERPLAN MAY MEAN NEW POOLS A £47m leisure strategy that includes potential new swimming facilities within leisure centres at Altrincham and Stretford are being looked at by Trafford Council. However, the document states further ‘feasibility studies’ are needed first regarding the futures of a number of existing sites. The Stretford proposals include 25m and 18m pools as part of the wider Civic Quarter masterplan, whilst in Altrincham, proposals include building a new leisure complex including leisure pools.
NEW OUTPATIENT CLINIC SCHEME TO USE POOL FACILITIES Thousands of people will benefit from an innovative scheme, bringing together NHS physiotherapy clinics and a town’s leisure services, which is being launched by Sirona Care & Health. Outpatient clinics run by Sirona, a not-for-profit organisation which provides highquality community adult and children’s health and care, will operate from Thornbury Active Lifestyle Centre, which itself is run by charitable non-profit organisation Circadian Trust. This means people recovering from an injury, surgery or painful muscles and joints will be treated at a state-of-the-art lifestyle centre in the heart of the community rather than a traditional hospital setting. Where appropriate, therapists and individuals will have access to use the centre’s facilities which include a 25 metre main pool, 12 metre learner pool plus poolside and mobile hoists. Jenny Theed, Sirona’s Director of Nursing and Operations, said: “Working with the lifestyle centre is a natural fit as we know being active is linked with improved health and wellbeing.” Once an individual’s treatment is over, they can then choose to become a member of the centre or join one of the other lifestyle centres run by Circadian across South Gloucestershire.

Computer-generated Footage Highlights University’s New Pool A digital fly-through video showcasing the 25-metre swimming pool at the University of Warwick’s stunning new Sports and Wellness Hub has been released and is available on YouTube. The short film takes viewers on a journey through the centre and explores the world-class sport and fitness facilities that will be on offer, giving people the first sight of the cutting-edge hub. The Sport and Wellness Hub, which is being constructed by Wilmott Dixon, is part of a £49m investment in the new centre and associated sports and physical activity facilities at the University of Warwick. The investment will give the university one of the finest sports centres in the UK and will raise the bar for sports and fitness provision in Coventry and the surrounding area. The three-minute computergenerated footage presents the first opportunity to see what the completed Sports and Wellness Hub will look like when it opens in April 2019.
It begins with a bird’s-eye view showing the centre’s setting in the nearby woodland before walking through the open-plan interior. The 12 lane, 25-metre swimming pool is showcased alongside all of the Hub’s other impressive facilities. Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Director of Sport & Active Communities at the University of Warwick, said:
“The digital fly-through brings the entire project to life and is a unique opportunity for everyone to see how it will look when it opens in spring next year. “This will be one of the finest centres of its kind across the UK and we believe this short film shows that and displays the true scale of the Hub as well as highlighting the cutting-edge facilities we will have on offer.”
Braywick Leisure Centre Build Gets Underway The multi-million pound Braywick Leisure Centre build got underway recently and over the coming months, foundations for the building will be dug and drains and utility supplies installed. The new leisure centre, which will replace the aging Magnet Leisure Centre, will provide state-of-the-art sports facilities for residents including: a 10-lane, 25m swimming pool (up from eight lanes at the Magnet), a training pool,
a splash area and larger pool changing village plus numerous other sports facilities. The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead has appointed Wates as the construction partner to develop the site. Alec Jackman, Business Unit Director at Wates Construction, said: “Today marks the start of a very exciting time in the progress of this bold and ambitious leisure centre for Maidenhead. It is always extremely rewarding to be able
to commence construction by breaking ground and never more so than when a project is set to have a significant impact upon a local community; these facilities will be invaluable in supporting the health and wellbeing of the residents of the Royal Borough.” Braywick Leisure Centre was procured via Major Works – UK, part of the Scape National Construction framework which provides public sector organisations with the highest standards of customer satisfaction, local labour and local spend for public sector construction projects. Projects also operate with strict minimum standards of fair payment, waste diversion, community engagement, training and apprenticeships. The centre is due for completion in mid-2020 with the Magnet remaining open until the new centre is operational, meaning there will be no break in provision.

For more than three years, the Lincolnshire company has offered Tylö sauna and steam products, which are available from the manufacturer’s exclusive, certified distributor for the UK, Golden Coast. At East Coast Saunas’ new showroom in Holbeach, its wide selection of products from the Swedish manufacturer take pride of place, as Managing Director Andrea Sleight explained: “With its high quality and clean lines, Tylö is a brand that is very popular in the area. In fact, most people we meet in the showroom have already made up their mind on brand before they come to us. “What they don’t know yet, however, is the model which suits them best. That’s why it’s important that they have a chance to explore and experience a number of styles and configurations. After all, showing the ‘right’ one is all you need to seal the deal.” At the spacious showroom, several models
are on show – including two which can be used for wet testing. In addition, there are two of the manufacturer’s popular Harmony frameless glass-front units available to view. Andrea explained: “Our customers love the look of these models – particularly in Dark Aspen and Light Aspen – so we’ve made sure that they’re always in the line of vision of our two seating areas.” A recently installed Tylö display board, supplied by Golden Coast, increases the brand’s presence on the floor, while underlining its unrivalled quality. Andrea continued: “Our aim is to encourage people to feel comfortable enough to get up close with the units. This gives

MOLLIS Starts A Soft Revolution
It is widely understood that comfort only begins when we are sitting down. But because there are numerous forms of enjoying a steam or wellness experience, it means that sauna sessions can now easily last four or five times longer than usual. With this in mind, KLAFS has finally come up with a special textile solution for the sauna in the form of the MOLLIS – borrowed from the Latin adjective for ‘soft’ and ‘comfortable’. Available in various sizes, this series of bolsters and cushions are not only incredibly comfortable and beautiful, but have proven to be highly functional and durable too. For more than two years, KLAFS specialists have invested in the development of a textile series. The cushions are available in different muted and fresh colours depending on the sauna model and overall interior. Benefits include: • New room design and atmosphere possibilities • Extremely low heat capacity and therefore virtually no heat transfer to the skin • The inlays stay pleasantly dry and do not store moisture • Easy handling during use and cleaning • Long life and high hygienic safety at the same time. Available in brown, ivory, blue and light green, as well as in various sizes, MOLLIS products can be washed and disinfected, are allergy-friendly and completely recyclable. KLAFS GmbH & Co. A Compact Steam Generator Solution For Small Recesses HygroMatik has launched HeaterSlim, a steam generator that produces mineral-free and hygienic steam, designed for applications where space is limited. The compact dimensions and low weight of the HeaterSlim unit mean assembly is possible in nearly all recesses. It comes with an output of 6 or 10 kg/h, making it particularly suitable for domestic, private and commercial suite spas. As part of its intelligent design, the HeaterSlim unit uses an insulated stainless steel cylinder to reduce heat loss. The cylinder is also re-usable. HeaterSlim can be set up using the unit’s 230V or 400V
connections. Its easily removable heater elements offer two performance classes in one device size. The unit’s accessible components and simple to remove cylinder allow for fast and convenient cleaning and maintenance. The heater elements can also be taken out and cleaned with ease. When operated with fully demineralised water, the steam generator accumulates almost no deposits, keeping maintenance to a minimal. HeaterSlim guarantees process safety by using sensor electrodes to measure levels. Water is heated in the energyefficient insulated stainless steel
Start-Up Awards Success For Welsh Hot Tub Firm Business is bubbling up nicely for a leading hot tubs company with plans for international expansion after double awards success. UK Leisure Living scooped two prizes at the prestigious Wales Start-Up Awards recently. The St Asaph and Mochdre based firm received accolades for Retailer Start-Up of the Year and North Wales Start-Up of the Year. Managing Director Gareth Jones was “thrilled” to emerge victorious in such competitive categories and said the awards will act as a springboard for further growth in the next 12 months. UK Leisure Living has gone from strength to strength, opening a showroom at Gordale Garden Centre, Wirral, taking on new staff and garnering customers nationwide. Gareth said they are now exploring opportunities in Ireland and Western Europe, capitalising on a boom in the ‘staycation’ market and a burgeoning reputation as the region’s number one hot tub retailer. “We have big plans for the future but are still new to this industry and to retail, so to win such a prestigious award when there are so many brilliant companies in this sector is a big achievement,” said Gareth. “The whole team is thrilled because it shows we are moving in the right direction; all of our hard work is paying off as we push sales and build the business with one eye on the future.” Gareth’s driving ambition is to provide the ultimate outdoor leisure experience for in people’s homes, holiday parks and accommodation. “We are still in the early stages as a company but the idea of creating a complete onestop showroom, that covers all aspects of outdoor luxury and comfort is something that appeals to me,” he said. Master Spas Unveils New Products And Future Vision At Annual IDM With the introduction of completely redesigned control panels, the debut of four new swim spas and the announcement of a massive expansion, Master Spas reinforced to dealers from around the globe that there’s no shortage of innovation and zero intention of slowing down. The 2018 International Dealer Meeting (IDM), recently held in Phoenix, gave dealers an opportunity to see the new products up close, try out new features and hear about Master Spas’ commitment to the future. For 2019, Master Spas completely reimagined the spa control panels with the user in mind. The displays are larger, more vibrant and intuitive, utilising full-colour graphics and icons to create what they believe is a best-in-class user experience. “The new user experience was thoughtfully constructed to make operating a Master Spas hot tub or swim spa intuitive, so our customers can spend more time relaxing and less time trying to navigate the control panel,” said Kevin Richards, Master Spas VP of Sales and Marketing. The H2X Fitness Swim Spa lineup saw a major overhaul with the introduction of four new swim spas: the Therapool 13 and three Challenger models. While the Therapool 13 was designed to meet increasing customer demand for a
larger entry-level swim spa at an affordable price point, the H2X Challenger Series was designed to change the game entirely. The H2X Challenger Series features three swim spas and according to the company, is the first truly variable-speed jetted swim spa on the market. This new technology allows for a customisable user experience, and the control panel allows workouts to be preprogrammed with ease. In addition to the new products and features, Master Spas announced a sizable expansion to its manufacturing campus, adding 166,000 square feet to house swim spa production, as well as the R&D, engineering, marketing and executive teams. Update On The Merger Between Fluidra And Zodiac In July, Fluidra and Zodiac closed their merger and during the recent Piscine Global Europe Expo in Lyon, the company hosted a conference to update the trade press on the recent merger. The new combined company has kept the Fluidra name and remains listed on the Spanish stock exchange. It now has 5,500 employees, a portfolio of some of the most widely recognised brands in the industry and a presence in over 45 countries. Mergers on a local level in the different countries will be done gradually, making the maximum effort to transfer the benefits of the merger to each client. The new Fluidra is now adapting its organisation in the different markets and bringing its teams together, always aiming to offer the best possible service to its customers. In Italy, Spain and Portugal,

the teams are already working together under the same roof in Bedizzole, Polinyà and Trajouce, respectively. In Germany, the new combined organisation has started to act as one under the same management, but still operates as three different legal entities: Zodiac Pool Deutschland, Fluidra Deutschland and SET. In Australia and South Africa, companies work as a single structure and the respective mergers will take place as soon as all legal and business aspects allow them to be completed. In France, Fluidra Commercial France and Zodiac France will
remain as two separate entities in 2019 under the sole management of Stéphane Figueroa. Both Fluidra France and Zodiac France have been working together for several months to find the best way to offer added value to their customers. “The opportunities in the pool industry are very exciting,” said Eloi Planes, Executive Chairman of Fluidra. “Pool and wellness markets continue to show positive dynamics with room to grow for all of us. We are very confident to be able to translate the advantages of the new Fluidra to our customers. Bruce Brooks, CEO of Fluidra, also highlighted: “Innovation will play an important part of Fluidra’s new strategic plan. We have more than 100 new products in the pipeline and a portfolio of over 1,000 patents powered by a robust R&D programme, which adds value for both customers and end-users.”
Penetron Protection For Boutique Black Sea Hotel
Located in a small village of just over 6,000 inhabitants, the new Sea Club Hotel is part of a larger effort to develop tourism in Divnormorskoye, located on the Black Sea. The intimate boutique hotel is the first of its kind in the Russian village. The main building, resembling a 19th-century castle, offers ten luxury guest rooms and is surrounded by a dozen classic-styled cottages, as well as swimming pools, a sauna and tennis courts. The hotel beach also has a pier for boats and yachts. Penetron Admix was used to treat the concrete for the swimming pool, the hotel maintenance
building, and the below-grade structures of the cottages. Penebar SW waterstop strips were laid out to seal the construction joints, and Penetron topical material was applied to all exposed concrete surfaces to ensure a waterproof matrix. Penetron crystalline materials can be applied to both fresh and existing concrete structures – for protection, repair and renovation – to eliminate cracks, voids and fissures. Once applied to the surface of newly-poured and existing concrete structures, the active ingredients in the Penetron materials react with concrete minerals to form insoluble crystals. This treatment permanently seals the concrete against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction, providing long-lasting protection from deterioration. “The Sea Club Hotel infrastructure is confronted with the saltwater of the Black Sea on one side and the pressure of the freshwater in the main swimming pool on the other side,” said Larisa Motornaya, Director of Hydroprotection, the local Penetron distributor. “Penetron crystalline products are the best way to increase the resistance of the concrete to both the chloride penetration and keeping water out.”

NIVEKO Celebrate New Site With Grand Opening Days Earlier this year, pool manufacturer NIVEKO moved to a new production facility and to celebrate, the company planned an official grand opening event. However, as the firm has so many business partners and major pool component suppliers who they wished to invite, there was a need to split the celebrations across two dates to enable everyone to visit. The first part of the grand opening took place on Friday 14 September 2018, followed by the second on 5 October 2018. With 95% of its products exported to Western Europe markets, more than 50 business partners from ten European countries attended across the two dates. There were also representatives of Pollet Pool Group, a global player in the swimming pool industry, which became the owner of NIVEKO at the start 2018. After an introduction by NIVEKO CEO Šimon Janča, who welcomed the guests, a speech was given by Sofie Pollet, who stressed the common values upheld by both companies, such as hard and honest work leading to success, plus respect for the customer in the business relationship. She also mentioned the similarity between the two companies, which were both established as family firms. The grand opening
was also attended by the founder, Jacques Pollet, with his wife and representatives of the company’s management team. The ceremonial cutting of the ribbon was followed by a tour of the outdoor pool showroom – the NIVEKO Garden – which features four different types of working pools that demonstrate possible combinations plus various different designs for surroundings. The visitors then moved into the administrative building, where they were given a tour of the offices, the technical facilities, storage areas and, last but not least, the production hall, where various types of pool could be seen in varying stages of completion. The afternoon programme continued with discussions and talks with the business partners, who passed on their experiences of installing pools and who compared the differences in the pool markets across various different countries. The group dinner in the wine cellar accompanied by traditional cimbalom music was a pleasant end to a successful day. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

A Busy End To A Busy Year! In this final issue of 2018, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights recent initiatives involving BISHTA and SPATA plus thanks the various individuals that have contributed to the work of the associations during another busy year
H
aving attended the Hoseasons’ Owners’ Conference at the majestic Celtic Manor, in Newport (Gwent) and also the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation Show at the NEC in Birmingham during November, it’s is clear there is a thirst for information on hot tubs. Both occassions were great opportunities for BISHTA (and also SPATEX for the NEC event) to work together to promote the importance of getting correct advice for hot tubs being used in business settings and also for this sector to know about the relevance of SPATEX and the exhibitors they can meet in Coventry to discuss their needs! It is clear that many people wish to know how to look after their hot tubs in holiday parks and rental settings, but there are still many owners that are not familiar with HSG 282 and related materials such as the Legionnaires’ disease Code of Practice (L8). BISHTA will be rolling out specific guidance for holiday parks (in addition to the excellent water hygiene management courses) to ensure holiday operators are up to speed with what they need to do with their hot tubs. There is a growing amount of information available on hot tubs, including BISHTA Standards, which are being revised and also a new PWTAG publication (Hot Tubs for Business) being launched this month at their annual conference. There will also be the new European Standard on domestic spas, and hot tubs (EN 17125) which is due out imminently and this includes an Annex on advice for hot tubs used in rental settings (business settings). BISHTA also had a presence at the Piscine Global Europe Exhibition in France, with a joint Spa Conference involving our American colleagues from APSP and IHTA. The meeting was successful in bringing together national pool and spa associations

plus manufacturers to share ideas on data, settings regulations (guidance and standards) and the third session on workforce development. In a busy schedule at Lyon, the World Alliance of Pool & Spa Associations (WAPSA) held their second-ever meeting. This gathering heard updates on the progress to date regarding the subgroups looking at data, education and safety, with a promise of more collaborative working in the New Year. Lyon was also the scene for the 6th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards and congratulations to our UK and other European winners for their successes. It was fantastic to see BISHTA and SPATA members present to receive their awards and please see page 55 for more information on all of the winners. Anyone keen to feature in future EUSA Awards will need to enter the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (hosted by BISHTA and SPATA) that are held at SPATEX. Winners from the UK event can then be entered into the EUSA Awards. The forthcoming evening will be held on Tuesday 29 January 2019. Please contact the office on 01264 356210/211 to book your seats for the Industry Gala Evening. Attendance at the event is open to everyone (whether or not you are BISHTA / SPATA members). The price is £71.95 + VAT per person. Back in the UK, SPATA has been holding a series of regional meetings at venues around the country. My thanks go to the Regional Chairs for their respective contributions to their meetings (Richard Carrington, Adam Clark, Steve Hallam / Claire Asher, Ben Studdy and Jamie Smith) and also to the companies offering their respective venues for the meetings – Calorex Heat Pumps (East), Cannings H20 (South West), David Hallam (North & Midlands), Pollet Pool Group (Thames Valley) and SCP (South East). There was also an online meeting via
WebEx for those members that were unable to attend their regional meeting. The progress on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) continues, and SPATA members have been responsible for organising a liner course due to take place on Tuesday 11 December in Andover. The course will be tutored by Aquaflex, Certikin International and Plastica and my thanks are extended to Neil Dalziel, Brad Armstrong, Neil Stephenson, Craig Williamson and Will Dando for their respective contributions. The finishing touches are also being put to a Sauna & Steam course, and this has been put together by Shaun Adams at Golden Coast. The pilot course is planned for Tuesday 26 February 2019 in Barnstaple. It is hoped that a further course can also be run for heat pumps. Finally, this time of year is an opportunity for me to thank the dedicated team that ensures the smooth running of the work on behalf of members and exhibitors / visitors. To Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Karen Goddard, Claire Foss and Izzy Lock. To Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer, Thay Castro, Howard Gosling (Chairman and the other SPATEX Directors). To the other dedicated Chairs for the respective Boards, Committees and Councils: Will Dando (BSPF), Richard Carrington (SPATA), Jamie Adams (PIP) and Pete Grinnall (BISHTA) and Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. The many dedicated Committee members, including the Technical teams, have also worked tirelessly again this year, under the Chairmanship of Peter Lang and Howard Gosling. SPATA is also very fortunate to have five inspectors to call upon (Peter Lang, Jim Gordon, Tim Bareham, Ian Betts and Steve Conway). My thanks to you all. Have a great festive break. See you at SPATEX 2019.

The Season To Network, Educate And Share Views! In this edition, we take a closer look at the recent SPATA and BISHTA Networking Days which took place at the BSPF’s Offices in Andover
T
his autumn, SPATA and BISHTA’s annual conferences (including the AGMs) took place in Andover, and after having been renamed as Networking and Learning Days, they lived up to their billing! This change of name came about after the Trade Associations had asked members and committee members for feedback on how the days could be improved and what the members would like to see included in their respective day. As the statutory AGM element of the day can take as little as 15 - 20 minutes, the focus for the rest of the day is very much aimed at helping members with important information impacting the industry. Both days provided a range of handpicked training topics from industry specialists to offer specific and informative content tailored to the calibre of attendees working in the wet leisure industry. Plenty of time was built into the days for networking and sharing views and ideas; these included a networking lunch at a local Italian restaurant for all attendees and both days culminated in an open forum for members to share opinions and comments.

STA POOL PLANT – TRAINING
Moving Forward With Training
For the last issue of 2018, SPN spoke to Luke Griffiths, Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at STA’s awarding organisation’ Safety Training Awards, to look back on how pool and spa plant training has developed over the last 12 months and discuss what’s coming up in 2019
WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAIN INDUSTRY CHANGES OR DEVELOPMENTS? For us (Safety Training Awards) and our Pool Plant Tutors, the most significant development has been the introduction of a new Approved Training Centre (ATC) model. As an Awarding Organisation, this was a regulatory requirement but one that supports the centres and the learners, ensuring the quality of tutoring delivery and assessment is of the highest standard. This is significant for improving standards; as such it’s a really positive step forward for the pool plant industry.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS? Gaining CIMSPA Endorsement for the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations was a fantastic achievement. We spent over a year consulting with industry groups and developing resources prior to the launch of the qualification – we took the time to ensure the syllabus was relevant for the whole of the industry, and covered all aspects of running a pool, spa or interactive water feature plant. Gaining endorsement from CIMSPA served as testament to this.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE TO THE NEW POOL PLANT OPERATIONS QUALIFICATION? The response has been very positive. In fact, it’s been a record year in terms of the number of learners gaining Safety Training Awards pool plant qualifications, which is thanks to our expert Tutor network delivering excellent, content-rich courses and resources. In particular, following the CIMSPA Endorsement, Nuffield Health, one of the largest private operators of swimming
42 December 2018 SPN 42_SPN_Dec_18_STA.indd 42
pools, became an ATC and rolled out the qualification across their 130 sites. With Nuffield managing different sizes and shapes of pools and spas, it was very important for them that their operators had a technically advanced syllabus that covered all aspects of running a swimming pool and spa. Nuffield choosing our qualifications, again provided endorsement that the research and insight we had gathered during the development of the qualification was correct, and the syllabus created was what the industry wanted.
WHAT CONTINUES TO BE THE MAIN CAUSE OF CONCERN FOR POOL PLANT OPERATORS? There continues to be incidents reported in the media such as accidental mixing of chemicals and people becoming ill following contracting infections whilst swimming. Many of the incidents could have been prevented if organisations had trained their employees sufficiently. Training is an extremely important aspect in reducing such incidents. The consequences of these potentially catastrophic incidents massively outweigh the time and expenditure required to complete a professional qualification, and go a long way to preventing such incidents.
WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR 2019? The new CIMSPA Professional Standard for Pool Plant Operative is due out imminently. STA were part of the professional development committee with leisure operators and other awarding organisations who contributed towards its development. The professional standard will outline the role and scope of a Pool Plant Operative and the essential knowledge and skills
that are needed to meet the requirements of Practitioner membership with CIMSPA. Once the standard goes live, Safety Training Awards will submit supporting material to CIMSPA to demonstrate how our qualification meets the standard for it to become a CIMPSA Professional Standard Endorsed Qualification. There is also the potential for some very interesting new partnership courses to launch early in the new year, but I don’t want to say too much as I am hoping to launch these at SPATEX at the end of January. As well, we continue to develop and make improvements to ensure our qualifications are the best available, so all pool plant resources will be having another upgrade in the spring and new Pool Plant Tutor courses launched.
ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO SPATEX 2019? WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS? Very much so, SPATEX 2019 promises to be the biggest one yet with over 100 exhibitors and a schedule packed full of seminars and of course, STA’s Pool Plant Conference. At the conference, delegates can learn all about the latest developments from STA, and hear from industry experts’ Martyn Hardy and Robbie Phillips. Plus everyone who attends will receive ½ CPD point – go to the events section on the STA website for the details. Filtration Solutions For Pools And Spas Some of the most important products that lie at the heart of any efficient water cleansing system are those which are associated with filtration. With recent innovations leading to improved performance and a reduction in water use, filters and filter media are now the first place to start looking when it comes to combining effective water management and making significant cost savings. This issue, we take a closer look at the range of available filtration products that are on offer in this developing sector By Jon Wadeson
W
hen it comes to the filtration of water for pools and spas, there really is a wide range of options available for an equally wide range of operating environments. More often than not hidden away, and previously seen as somewhat low tech, at least when compared to other more glamorous products, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of recent innovations and improved solutions for what is without doubt, a critical part of any pool and spa setup. As a result of the advances made, some products have become more flexible, others are now more durable and some are reducing the amount of water that is used – and all lead to lower operating costs – so the developments are welcomed by all. With plenty of options already available, combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer, so this issue we highlight just some of the current crop of filtration options.
A GREAT CHOICE FOR YOUR NEXT FILTER INSTALLATION For new installations or replacements, the OC-1 Filter will be an obvious choice for many. Supplied complete with the lightweight OC-1 Filtration Media it is specially designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 and complement the amazing advantages that the filtration media provides. The OC-1 Filter range covers all applications from small domestic to the largest commercial installations. Unlike traditional methods that use entrapment, OC-1 Filtration Media works through settlement which means that the debris settles within the cells of OC-1 throughout the entire bed rather than being trapped on top of the media. The British manufactured filtration media has some exceptional benefits – by
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 45-48_SPN_Dec_18_Filtration.indd 45
replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1 it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. Key benefits of using OC-1 media include: • Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass • Reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash – reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating. • Less maintenance – last longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment • Independently tested by IFTS and conforms to EN16713-1 • Recyclable at the end of product life. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “OC-1 is a change in mind set. Since the launch of OC-1, we have had superb feedback and have new installations and the upgrading of existing sand filters every week. The advantages for the installers are beginning to be fully appreciated.” For new installations or replacements, the OC-1 Filter which is supplied with OC-1 Filtration Media will be an obvious choice for many

CASE STUDY WATERCO PRODUCTS SHINE AT NATURAL POOL IN OXFORDSHIRE Nestled in Oxfordshire is Hailey, a forest township surrounded by historic hamlets and scenic countryside. Locals Kate and Ben Brown operate Turley Farm Barns, which includes two holiday lets and a traditional Cotswold stone barn beautifully restored as an entertainment venue. Ben, who was introduced to the natural beauty of a chemical-free pool by his cousin, wanted to create a swimming environment that would enhance the picturesque landscape rather than detract from it. A natural swimming pool, or pond, as some call it, uses biofiltration to keep the water clean, clear and healthy, and as Mountain Pools Managing Director Tim Gunning advised, if it’s designed well, it has the ability to seamlessly blend into the garden landscape. Tim, in conjunction with the Natural Pools swimming pool company, designed and built a 250m3 rectangular pool with a large regeneration area. Assisting the filtration process is Waterco’s Exotuff 702 bead filter, 2 x Aquamite 1HP pumps and a MC16 MultiCyclone, a combination which Tony Fisher, Waterco Europe’s CEO, said is ideal for natural pools and ponds. “Exotuf is far superior mechanically and biologically to anything else on the market while the Aquamite pumps are ideal for recirculation systems used in conjunction with ponds and water features due to its compact design and high degree of energy efficiency,” he explained.
46 December 2018 SPN 45-48_SPN_Dec_18_Filtration.indd 46
Waterco’s award-winning MultiCyclone removes debris through the process of centrifugal filtration prior to reaching the Exotuf filter, which is considered a market leader due to its sturdy tank design as well as unique lateral arrangement and water distribution headers. “This ensures the best mechanical and biological filtration is achieved at all times,” added Tony.

FILTRATION With their SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System, Darlly Europe have invented a competitive and effective solution for HSG282 compliance for the majority of hot tubs
the spa is in a filter cycle or in actual use – satisfying the key demands of HSG282 compliance. The design also allows easy access for inspection, refill or replacement, while keeping it locked away out of sight of consumers using the spa.
GOLDEN COAST ASK: “IS IT TIME TO MAKE THE SWITCH?”
DARLLY EUROPE’S REVOLUTIONARY SANISTREAM DOSING SOLUTION The Health & Safety Executive’s recent publication ‘HSG282’, sets out specific and detailed guidelines for hot tubs installed in holiday let situations and places risk responsibility on holiday let owners and operators to ensure their installations are compliant. Section 76 of HSG282 deals with the specification of hot tubs installed in such a setting and prescribes that hot tubs must be “disinfected using bromine or chlorine through the use of an inline disinfectant feeder”. This ensures that the disinfectant is dosed continuously while the hot tub is in use or in a filter cycle, and avoids the peaks and troughs in disinfectant levels that would occur by hand dosing or the use of floating type dispensers. The great news is the team at Darlly Europe invented a competitive and effective solution for HSG282 compliance for the majority of hot tubs on sale in the UK with the launch earlier in the year of their revolutionary new SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System. SaniStream is an inline dosing dispenser which allows for the continuous dosing of chlorine and bromine tablets or granules. It is fully adjustable to allow for the regulation of sanitiser flow depending on the demands of the particular spa it is fitted in and it does not require the modification of any of the hot tub’s existing plumbing. SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System is designed to install in the void in the centre of an adapted Darlly filter cartridge, so that dosing is inline and continuous whenever

A hard-wearing commercial filter available exclusively from Golden Coast is changing the game for operators, after it was revealed that it’s not just a direct replacement for leading brands, it’s more cost and time efficient, too. GC Olympia filters are produced from lightweight polyester resin and fibreglass to create a robust bobbin-wound filter which is engineered for longevity. “While the GC Olympia range offers a perfect fit for new installations, it’s a proven performer in the price-competitive replacement market, where it delivers very real cost and time savings for your customers,” explained Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. “The key advantage of the GC Olympia is found in its plumbing configuration. We’ve designed it to ensure a ‘perfect match’ for the large proportion of existing filter tanks in the commercial sector. Because there’s no need for significant replumbing, making the switch couldn’t be easier. It keeps downtime to a minimum during refurbishment – which is crucial for commercial operators.” Available in diameters ranging from 1050 mm to 3000 mm, GC Olympia filters are rigorously pressure tested to 4.0 bar. Tanks, which work to a maximum temperature of 50°C, offer a working pressure of up to 2.5 bar as standard. However, 4.0 bar models are
available on request. Offering flow rates from 25.8 m³ (GCC1050-30M) to 282.8 m³ (GCC300040M), there’s a GC Olympia filter for every commercial need. Units offer easy access, thanks to a closure steering wheel and 400 mm top entry. Units are supplied, as standard, with a 1.0 m filter bed, an air/water drain port, a 75 mm sand dump port and a 1” ABS lateral system. A menu of options, including vinylester lining, nozzles and nozzle plates, sight glass and side hatches, allows operators to find the best fit.

WATERCO’S NEW RANGE OF DIN STANDARD MICRON COMMERCIAL FILTERS Waterco is one of only a few companies worldwide which manufactures large, high pressure-rated filters; a key point of difference being that Waterco uses the latest in fibreglass winding technology, which is employed in the manufacture of Micron range of fibreglass filters. The range of Micron fibreglass filters now has a new addition in the form of filters made to the specifications of the DIN 19605:2016-05 design standard. These filters offer all the quality and warranty assurances of the standard Waterco Micron range, along with features such as large services hatches to allow for ease of access, large sight glasses, and nozzle plate underdrain system to ensure uniform water flow both in filtration and backwash. Available in sizes 1200, 1400, 1600 and 1800, the DIN standard filters are a new addition to the Waterco Europe commercial range. Key benefits of Waterco’s fibreglass filters are: • They have a mechanical and chemical resistance superior to steel • Fibreglass tanks do not rust or corrode and are able to withstand damage from many types of water treatment chemicals • Fibreglass vessels weigh only one third the weight of steel vessels, while maintaining the same level of strength • Once installed, minimal maintenance or repairs are required.
Waterco’s range of Micron fibreglass filters now has a new addition in the form of filters made to the specifications of the DIN 19605:2016-05 design standard
Certikin Launches World’s First Purge Filter For Pools At this year’s Piscine Global Europe, Certikin was proud to launch the revolutionary Purge filter. A world’s first for swimming pools, the filter uses the established technology of their existing OC-1 open cell filter media to produce this innovative new up-flow design. The Purge filter offers all the benefits of OC-1 such as lower running costs, reduced water consumption and easy operation but with the added benefit of a compact ‘plug and play’ package. A single Purge can filter 4,000 litres / hour from an optional integrated 40W pump, but the system is fully modular and can be fitted to suit all requirements including multiple configurations for larger pools. A unique air purge ensures a comprehensive backwash can be completed with just 22 litres of water and for added peace of mind, a built in UV steriliser is available. Jon Maskell, Certikin International Business Manager said: “Following on from the success of OC-1 Filtration Media, we are delighted to be able to bring the Purge filter to the market. The eyecatching design with its unique air backwash system is affordable, simple to install and requires minimal maintenance making it ideal for domestic pools.” Key features of the Purge filter include: • Patented design • Unique air backwash uses just 22 litres of water • Low running costs • IFTS tested • Available with integral UV.
As a result of the advances made, some products have become more flexible, others are now more durable and some are reducing the amount of water that is used...” The company which boasts an impressive variety of both commercial and domestic filtration solutions, has sought in recent years to add to its range and products such as the money and water saving MultiCyclone prefilter, and now its larger equivalent for the commercial market, the MultiCyclone 70XL, capable of handling flow rates up to 90m³/hr, are invaluable tools in
prolonging the life and efficacy of traditional commercial filtration systems.

Relax, Swim Or Party – The Choice Is Yours For customers that want an all-in-one package for relaxation, occasional exercise and easy maintenance, entry-level swim spas tick all the boxes. Often preferred to a traditional small swimming pool, these counter-current equipped products are frequently referred to as party spas and are aimed at budget conscious families rather than customers who need a training aid for a serious workout. With prices starting at around £10,000, we take a look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson
A
s a single product that offers all the benefits of both a small swimming pool and a hot tub in an affordable and easy to own package, it’s no real surprise that entry-level swim spas have fared well in the UK. After all, for families who need to keep an eye on the budget, there’s a lot to like. Their versatility means owners have a pool for swimming in and at other times, an area for the kids to have fun and mess around in. One day it can be a venue to entertain guests and the next, a tranquil space to relax in alone – their flexible nature is hard to beat. As an introduction to counter-current swimming and the wider world of swim spas, entry-level options provide a package which represents great value for money and this has ensured their success. With a number of manufacturers providing budget-friendly models, we look closer at what’s available as an entry point to the swim spa market.

a range of great value swim spas which includes the Ares model. The most compact in their range of swimming spas, the Ares, is perfect for family fun and fitness, as well as low impact walking exercise. The Ares has 4 powerful pumps that can either be directed to the swim jets, diverted to the spa end, or adjusted half and half. Being 4.3 metres in length, there is still ample space for swimming and relaxing. The Ares is definitely not a basic product – it is a fully functioning, incredibly well specified swim spa that features a
Balboa control system and shell produced in Aristech acrylic. The only difference is its proportions. The Ares has been designed for families with young children. It’s been created to allow the kids to splash about at the jets end, whilst leaving plenty of space between the children and the adults relaxing in the spa end. The Ares is the perfect pool for youngsters to learn to swim in. With its compact dimensions, as well as being a swim spa, it delivers just like a hot tub and features one seat, two loungers plus multi-coloured LED lighting in the footwell and at the waterline. In short, it has everything for family enjoyment – it’s that special place to relax and a great place for swimming or for weightless exercising against the adjustable counter-currents. A PREMIUM PARTY SWIM SPA FROM SCP SCP UK have been developing their swim spa range over a number of years with their long standing American manufacturers Garden Leisure and one of the newer additions to the range is their GLP 13’ Party/Exercise swim spa. When launched, the 13ft model joined an already successful range of swim spas produced by Garden Leisure but the company said this new model was the biggest thing to hit the market in the last few years. It features a great swim system that is almost impossible to beat with its swim tether and exercise equipment as optional extras. Despite its size, it features bench seating all around the inside of the spa which can easily seat 10-12 people, making it (as its name would suggest) the perfect swim spa for entertaining friends and family. With the powerful 4kW heater, users can go from swimming temp to hot tub temp in no time

AN ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL WHICH SPORTS HIGH-END LOOKS Over recent years, the Wellis brand has gone from strength-to-strength and in 2016, the European manufacturer added swim spas to its expanding range following a major increase to the company’s manufacturing capacity. The Wellis swim spa range consists of a number of models but one of the most important features across the entire range is that all of their swim spas have a depth of 1.5m and a width of 2.3m. This consistent specification allows users of all their swim spas, regardless of the model chosen, to have the perfect swimming experience. In addition, all of Wellis’ swim spa models sport the EveRest premium design elements, taken from their successful hot tub model. COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS
Swimming Against The Stream When it comes to increasing the functionality of smaller pool spaces, counter-current systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. It’s a combination which has been a great success for swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Affordable and easy to install, they deliver a more complete experience and in this issue, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems By Andrea Hartshorne

hen space is at a premium or when budgets are somewhat tight, a large swimming pool will often be ruled out as an option. Smaller pools whilst fun, often just seem to lack that certain something – and in many cases it’s the ability to enjoy a proper, uninterrupted swimming session. For many pools and their owners, the solution is a counter-current system – a product which enhances the functionality of smaller pools, putting them more on a par with their bigger rivals and in some cases, actually surpasses their overall functionality. Once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited fun, swim for as long as a user likes and their introduction can often provide hydrotherapy options too. With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for not exercising in smaller pools or maximising their potential, and we take a closer look at some of the counter-current options that are available.
FLUVO SWIMS AGAINST THE TIDE OF COUNTER-CURRENT UNITS Looking to inject some extra excitement and fun into a swimming pool? Look no further than Certikin’s Fluvo range of hydrotherapy equipment which stands out as a beacon of excellence. Ultra-stylish, the Fluvo systems are built into the wall of the pool so only the attractive face plate is visible. The latest Fluvo model, the award winning Xanas counter-current unit, is state-of-theart, both aesthetically and in terms of its high performance. It is designed with the regular swimmer in mind, who is looking to add another dimension to his pool and wants fun and rewarding exercise. Suitable for liner, concrete and one-piece pools, the Xanas features an extra-flat design with a brushed stainless steel or ABS drop-shaped grill. It can be specified with pressure sensitive switches or rotary knobs with single or three phase options. The Fluvo X-Jet takes the power of the counter-current to another level for the serious swimmer and athlete. The wide area output flow creates a uniform current along the full width of the body, just like a wave

in the ocean, rather than being pointed at a single point, like the flow offered by some inferior counter-current units. Control is through touch sensitive buttons which operate the one or two pump units. Hydrotherapy builds stamina, mobility, tones muscles and can aid weight loss at the same time as delivering low impact resistance as the water acts as a cushion, absorbing any jerky movements. Furthermore, it improves blood circulation and soothes aching joints.
LIVE LIFE IN THE FASTLANE Available from Certikin, the Fastlane is the Rolls Royce of counter-current units and is designed for athletes and serious swimmers as well as lesser mortals wishing to get the most out of their swimming pool. What sets the Fastlane apart from other units is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a
wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering the fastest, smoothest swim current (a necessity for any serious swimmer) available in any swimming machine. Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, a Fastlane turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it comes with an optional 6 inch high visibility digital LED display. Children love it too because it’s plain fun! Its current is adjustable between 4.04 minutes and 1:14 per 100m pace. The Fastlane has two parts: a remotely located hydraulic power unit that powers the swim current and the swim unit that mounts to the pool. The current is controlled by a remote control. Simple hydraulics means that no electricity is required poolside. It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular; gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required

COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS minimum water depth is 35 inches. It’s particularly ideal for small swimming pools as it lets you swim for as long as you like without turning. Featuring a 5HP swim current generator, it is not only simple to use but also economical to run. There is now a Fastlane Fit@Home app which allows you to control the Fastlane using any smart device. It also acts as a smart display showing swim speed and duration.
CATCH THE WAVE WITH GOLDEN COAST’S COUNTER-CURRENT UNITS With interest in hydrotherapy and fitness on the rise, more and more customers are looking towards swimming as the solution for their wellbeing needs. According to Golden Coast, the key to making the most from this new growth is understanding the products and your customers so well that you can pinpoint the best products for their needs and when it comes to counter-current units, the company has options for the perfect solution. pool, he said: “We are also testing this model of exercise pool with a support strap rather than heavy bulky bracing, as this will be a time and cost-saving improvement to both our customers and end-users.” One of the Plastica members of staff, Jake – who is a previous club swimmer – volunteered to swim against the stream and test the performance of the X-Stream. Commenting on his experience, he said: “The X-Stream was good for a steady, consistent pace swim. Great for training if time is spent setting up the dual jets position to suit the individual. The through-the-wall unit would also be great for hydrotherapy use.” A full YouTube video of the test is available online. Plastica also plan to test the Aquajet 100, an over-the-wall unit, ideal for retrofitting. It’ll be great as a comparison to the X-Stream and to continue improving the company’s knowledge of the products which they sell.

Perfect for all ranges of training whether it’s for health, fitness or elite swimmers… Ocea partnered with HydroStar has quickly grown to be one of the most popular and high spec counter-current systems with a good mix of German engineering and UK based sales and service backup.
The X-Stream Counter-current is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit
NO MATTER THE REQUIREMENT, JETSTREAM HAS A SOLUTION Germany manufacturer uwe invented the counter-current system in 1967 and the creation of the company’s JetStream counter-current systems has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. By regulating the current, even small pools can become really exciting – and that goes for trained athletes as well. With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of needs. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA counter-current system. It was designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, right where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, the pressure-sensitive single-button PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75 m3/h to 225 m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA. For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, a popular choice is the EUROJET/DUNA compact system. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes, and the control panel – all the components are preassembled and it takes minimum effort to install, but gives maximum pleasure. In variants from 11 to 18 litres per second, all with a swivel nozzle, fully adjustable flow and an air bubble bath. In short: you get a lot for a little!
Once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited fun, swim for as long as a user likes and their introduction can often provide hydrotherapy options too” Even pool owners who do not have the option of retrofitting a counter-current system don’t have to be deprived of the pleasure thanks to the TREVI and TREVI LUX surfacemounted systems! Just fit them on the edge of the pool and plunge into fun.
PLASTICA X-STREAM COUNTERCURRENT UNITS Counter-current units are an affordable way to turn a small pool into an endless swim. Whether a customer is looking for gentle resistance training, aqua-aerobics or hydrotherapy, a counter-current is flexible enough to suit many needs. The X-Stream Counter-current is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit and is produced using a 316 stainless-steel niche and grab rail as standard. It features 2 ½” BSP/F treaded suction, is easy to install, plus gives a neater finish and is more powerful than over-the-wall alternatives. There are two options for the X-Stream.
The single kit comes with a Nardoself pump and produces 60m cubed per hour output. Alternatively, the X-Stream duo, which comes with two of the Espa wiper pumps, gives an impressive 100m cubed per hour output. Each X-Stream option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay between them. The X-Stream is especially suited to the range of wooden pools manufactured by Plastica. It uses pneumatic air on/off switches, which are accessible from the pool to keep any electrics away from the bather. It also features two water/air jets with directional nozzles for fine adjustment of the flow.

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS
A Very Good Dose Of Automatic Control As dosing pumps and control systems go quietly about their business of applying regular and accurate chemicals to pool and spa water, it’s easy to overlook the fact that they have become essential pieces of equipment that have made the lives of their owners infinitely easier. In fact, the latest innovations mean ensuring perfect leisure time water has never been so simple and this issue, we roundup the increasingly high tech options on offer By Karen Witney
A
utomation of water treatment is a growing trend that ensures pools are operating at optimum levels whilst at the same time making life easier for the owner or operator. There are a number of superb methods on the market for both domestic and commercial facilities. Modern times demand more and more technologically advanced products and systems in our day to day living and the industry has taken up the baton and introduced anything from entry-level domestic applications, to the heavy volume high-end, all singing all dancing automation systems that are now seen as a necessity in leisure facilities. These commercial systems also require training for those who operate the equipment, plus there is also the need for regular servicing by industry experts so ensuring the systems are well maintained and correctly managed. Golden Coast’s Managing Director, Jamie Adams, had this to say about their experience in of the sector: “Our support services have been steadily growing in popularity since they launched in 2017. The versatility of the range means we’ve been able to meet a wider variety of needs than ever before − we can recommend either a fully bespoke or off-the-shelf solution. Companies with limited experience of automated dosing have been able to add value to their offering, because of the on-site and off-site training we have available, or through our installation service.” So with a variety of companies offering a wide range of solutions and products, in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the available options.
TAKE CONTROL WITH GAFFEY’S GREAT FEATURES The chloriDES pH and free chlorine controller offers excellent build quality and great features for the operator. Gaffey’s chloriDES pH and free chlorine controller boasts great features and excellent build quality
its launch in the UK a few years ago, well over 100 systems have been installed and commissioned by a network of distributors across the UK in commercial pools, theme parks and school pools. The chloriDES controllers are available as standalone units or together as part of a package including the Gaffey electrolytic Hyprolyser that generates chlorine safely on site and on demand from the electrolysis of salt solution. The generated solution at 0.6% strength doesn’t gas off, is stable and doesn’t block injection fittings and dosed into process by robust Gaffey chemiDOS chemical dosing pumps which can be controlled via chloriDES controllers either on/off, pulse or 4-20mA control options. Never a company to rest on its laurels, Gaffey Technical Services will re-launch this system next year with a touch screen interface and the option of linking 1,2, 3 or 4 sample water cells to a single controller and with increased connectivity.

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS Alkalinity, but also control via automatically switching between acid and CO2 for pH control based upon user-defined set points. When the TA reaches the high set point, the BECSys controller will feed acid to control the pH until the TA drops to a low set point, at which time the BECSys controller will automatically switch over to CO2 for pH control. The BECSys Alkalinity Meter requires any BECSys7 or BECSys5 to have Gbit connectivity and can be retrofitted to existing BECSys7s and BECSys5’s as long as the Gbit connectivity card is retrofitted as well.
plant room and quietly doses PAC into the pool filtration system giving enhanced water treatment quality. Etatron’s Controllers are designed for use with dosing systems which require accurate and reliable regulation. They are designed to measure and control pH, Rx (Redox Potential) and Chlorine. In addition, the controllers can provide measurement of hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and chlorine dioxide. Two types of menus are provided: a basic mode allows the user to control only basic functions, while the expert mode allows access to the full set of functions. Highly flexible and able to be configured to measure any of the above parameters Etatron’s Controllers are perfect for a large range of industries including water treatment, leisure, chemical processing and food. Their controllers and dosing pumps are available as a part of a panel mounted system for ease of installation and use. The panel is designed to be connected to a sample line from a dosing system, from which the pH, ORP and chlorine levels can be determined which is then used by the attached controller or pump to regulate the dosing for the whole system.
GOLDEN COAST’S CRYSTAL-CLEAR SOLUTION TO AUTOMATIC DOSING
AQUATROL FOCUS ON WATER QUALITY We are all aware of the importance of monitoring Total Alkalinity (TA) within swimming pool and spa water – total alkalinity explained in its crudest form is the water’s ability to resist changes in pH levels. Continuing their focus on the enhancement of swimming pool water quality, BECs have now launched their new BECSys Alkalinity Meter – a product that determines the TA level by performing a patented, flowing water titration process. A precise amount of specially formulated reagent is injected into a mixing chamber and the TA is calculated based upon the ratio of flow rate and pH response.
The BECSys Alkalinity Meter from Aquatrol determines the TA level through a patented flowing water titration process
The reagent used has a negligible impact on the pool water chemistry and because it’s a titration process, the TA readings are unaffected by residual chlorine or saline levels within the pool water. The accuracy of the TA reading is +/- 5ppm, which is better than most test kits. The TA meter integrates with a BECSys7 or BECSYs5 not only to display the Total
More and more health clubs, spas and fitness facilities are discovering the benefits of outsourcing their dosing needs to automated systems… Should you be taking a leaf from their book? While automatic chemical dosing can be a blessing for those managing wet leisure facilities, not every company has the in-house knowledge or resources needed. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “There are crystal-clear benefits to automatic dosing systems. They allow companies to eliminate valuable staff time spent testing, avoid dosing mistakes and – above all else – ensure that water is clean, clear and hygienic. “But, it does require commitment from employers and facility managers to increase knowledge and understanding of the subject and ensure that staff are equipped with the appropriate training… and that can cost facilities time and money.” Golden Coast set out to find a simple solution to this problem. “We wanted to develop an easy-to-use service which would give facilities the opportunity to outsource any (and every) step of the process.” Designed to make life easier for those
CASE STUDY COTSWOLD POOL GAINS SUMMER CONFIDENCE With another busy season expected, the management team at The Lido at Chipping Norton were looking at ways to improve the water quality for its visitors on a day-to-day basis. After some initial discussions with the senior staff, CPC were tasked with submitting and installing a suitable dosing system to help perfect the popular Lido’s water quality on a day-to-day basis. It was proposed that to maintain this challenge that a new generation hth® Easiflo briquettes feeder would be installed. Once running the Lido’s staff have benefited from the new systems constant monitoring and response, taking away the need for regular hand dosing of chlorine. The hth® Easiflo feeder produces a calcium hypochlorite solution on demand from the automated control unit. The hth® Easiflo briquettes are placed inside the

hopper of the feeder. When the auto control indicates a need for chlorine, filtered pool water is directed onto the briquettes via the patented spray system. This produces a stable chlorine solution, which is then drawn into the pool circulation under vacuum created by the venturi. Commenting on the installation, one of The Lido’s management team said: “Overall a good experience, equipment is easy to understand, handle and maintain, and the processes have been easy to teach to our support staff too. It gives us much greater confidence in our pool water treatment and we have been able to keep our chemical levels on a more even keel through this very busy and hot summer.” Complete Pool Controls 01242 662700 www.cpc-chemicals.co.uk

The Zodiac pH and Chlor Expert really do take the worry out of chemical dosing and are perfect for domestic situations up to a maximum of 150m3, removing the need to handle chemicals around the poolside. The simple to operate control panel offers the end user an easy view backlit LCD screen interface which allows them to increase and decrease dosing levels as required. Of course, it is always important to understand that an auto-dosing system does need maintenance
Automation systems for swimming pools have continued to be a significant area of growth for the pool industry over the last five years. Pool owners want convenience, efficiency and easy management of their pool system, including the ability to monitor and maintain their pool water chemistry to provide safe, crystal clear water at all times, thus avoiding the necessity for constant maintenance. The Hayward control station is a complete automated system to help pool owners manage their pool dosing, however it will also manage pool heating, filtration and lighting. Automatic dosing systems have developed significantly over recent years and now for the traditional pricing of dosing systems, customers should expect to gain full automation of all systems. Why not control all aspects of the pool set up from an easy to use mobile app that allows owners to switch on a heat pump remotely, or turn it off to save on electricity costs when they are away from home. Owners can also reduce the filtration levels if the pool isn’t being used for a period of time. The Hayward control station is supplied complete with all the necessary dosing pumps, probes and probe holders to monitor pH levels and dose liquid chlorine. The

However, with this taken into account then the pH Expert will reliably dose liquid acids or alternatively alkali through a peristaltic pump into the pool return filtration line, ensuring that the water balance is kept stable. Use of the Redox based Chlor expert is just as simple with the concentration similarly adjusted on the front panel of the unit, also using a clear view backlit LCD screen. Sodium hypochlorite is then fed into the pool return filtration line by the peristaltic pump. Both units have a maximum dose rate of 1.5l/hr and are controlled by a configurable ‘OFA’ three-level over-feed alarm. All the necessary saddle clamps, sensors and feed pipes are supplied with both systems, making installation easy for any pool technician. These inexpensive, entry level chemical

GET THE RIGHT CHEMISTRY WITH THE CERTIDOS 5 STEP PROGRAMME As part of Certikin, one of the market leaders, CertiDos can offer a complete solution for all aspects of chemical dosing and water treatment. This is delivered through a 5-step programme which starts with the survey. This is crucial, with all the information collated to ensure the most effective solution can be advised on. Once these details have been established, the team can advise on the right kit to ensure the best operating strategy is implemented. CertiDos engineers will install and commission the system to ensure everything is operating correctly, and most importantly, spend time carrying out operator training so the system is operated and maintained as it should be. The final step is planned preventative maintenance which is an essential part of the smooth running of any chemical dosing system. The frequency of visits will depend on the facility, bather load and the site’s own maintenance schedule but as a general rule, the team recommend at least two service visits a year. “It is not unusual to receive an enquiry that contains minimal information,” said Certichem’s Manager Vanessa Lloyd. She added: “Understanding why the client has chosen to invest in the equipment and what they hope to gain and overcome is invaluable in terms of kit selection. What type of application is it, is there a preference for chemicals, why have these chemicals been selected, what are the training requirements for on site staff, have risk assessments and method statements been considered? Once these details have been established the specification can be drawn up and quoted. The CertiDos range includes components right from the injectors up to multi parameter controllers with remote connectivity functionality and the CertiChem team will happily quote full system packages.”
Certikin’s CertiDos 5 step automatic dosing offers a complete solution for all aspects of chemical and water treatment precision
Automation of water treatment is a growing trend that ensures pools are operating at optimum levels whilst at the same time making life easier for the owner or operator” PARTNERSHIP OFFERS TRIED & TESTED AUTO-DOSING Plastica and Gaffey have teamed up to provide the perfect combination of costeffective auto-dosing systems and chemicals. Chemical safety will be one of your highest priorities if you’re a commercial pool manager. New regulations (COSHH and HSG179) have meant many now choose to use automatic chemical feed equipment. The Pellet-Pro® is an automatic calcium hypochlorite tablet feeder by Gaffey. It has a proven track record with great versatility. A single Pellet-Pro system can provide a consistent chlorine solution for up to three separate pools. This makes the machine an economical and popular choice. The system is designed for use with Plastica’s HYPRO 70® tablets and other approved tablet products. They contain an anti-scale additive and are specially hardened for use in erosion feeders. By using the Pellet-Pro® system with HYPRO 70® chemicals, the pools will benefit from minimal interaction with both chemicals and equipment. Together, they offer unmatched performance and control. Pellet-Pro® has recently had an updated design and higher tablet capacity, meaning its versatility has been extended even further. HYPRO-70® Pellets are manufactured to strict quality controls, the 10 gram pellets contain additives to minimise scaling and sediment formation. Plastica’s marriage between the PelletPro system and the HYPRO 70 chemicals offers ideal performance and control

OPINION
Bigger Isn’t Always Better Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams provides some tales and observations following a short trip to the home of the Whopper
I
n 1957 Burger King’s founder, James McLamore, launched the Whopper after noticing that a rival restaurant was having success with a larger than normal burger. James thought that was probably down to its size, so the Whopper was born and christened, because ‘Whopper’ sounded like ‘something big’ and he thought that was a good thing. America certainly took the idea of size to heart; Burger King now claims 2.1 billion Whopper sales per year. That’s hard to believe. Until you watch Americans eat. I’ve recently returned from the International PSP Expo in Las Vegas and I’ve had plenty of opportunity to watch Americans eat. I have to confess that Vegas is probably the ‘Excess’ capital of America but it still came as a surprise to see a large sign outside one restaurant featuring pizza and pasta and meatballs that simply said ‘Forget Portion Control’. When Americans talk about ‘five a day’ I think they’re referring to meals!
IF YOU WANT MORE, YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK I’ve been back to the US pool show over 25 times now, starting in the 80’s when the US still lead the way in wet leisure and just a small handful of us Brits travelled over to seek out the latest innovations that we could take back to the UK. They call it an International show, which is akin to naming their annual baseball championships the World Series when it’s only for the US. In truth the show is very much an American affair. In contrast to the rest of America, the PSP Expo has slimmed down over the years. Gone are the two storey exhibition stands with top floors specifically to entertain VIP guests. Gone is the International Visitors Lounge, where you could tee up meetings with suppliers and have a discussion in private over a coffee and a bite to eat, all at no cost. Gone too are a lot of the suppliers.
LESS ISN’T MORE Many key manufacturers and international visitors no longer attend, the stands have become smaller and the old vibe is missing. Having said that, it’s always important to keep your finger on the pulse of the industry as something new and exciting can always pop up out of the blue. Back in the good ole’ days we found many great products here, from the Purex Tropic Isle gas heater to the WhisperFlo pool pump and the Ionic Purifier. If there’s one thing that Americans seem to excel at, it’s coming

If there’s one thing that Americans seem to excel at, it’s coming up with great names for things; for instance, the ‘Whopper’” up with great names for things; for instance, the ‘Whopper’. The PSP Expo website talks about ‘establishing impactful relationships’, but as I sat in the crowded concession nursing a $7 cup of coffee, I thought it was more about keeping in touch with good suppliers and old friends and making some new contacts. It’s a shame Britain doesn’t share a common language with the Americans…
THE BIG COUNTRY I suppose my overriding thought about America is that it’s big, a country that is large enough to contain some big people, big businesses and big ideas. The sheer scale of the country means that there will be a lot of good and bad, a lot of contradictions sitting next to each other. The image that sticks with me that sums that feeling up is one from our journey from LA to Vegas. We drove on Interstate 15 across the Mojave Desert. It’s hot and featureless and the horizon never seems to get any closer. About 50 miles outside Vegas we came to a stunning site. The Ivanpah Solar Power Facility looks sci-fi enough to feature in the opening shots of Blade Runner 2049. (In fact, it actually does.) There are three solar towers generating steam from the sun’s heat focused on them by 173,500 mirrors that are
set in concentric circles around the towers. It is beautiful. It’s clean and sustainable. It is incredible. As I watched it emerge out of the dessert I became aware of the traffic on the road in front of it. Eight litre Peterbilt trucks probably carrying nothing more than a handful of Amazon parcels. A car-share lane that was empty because no one was sharing their car. Cars and trucks alike with all the aerodynamics of a house brick. And that’s what it felt like. I can see the future from here, but it feels like I’m living in the past.
HAVE A NICE DAY, NOW So here I am, back home in Blighty. Christmas is coming and this year is soon due to end. I enjoyed my short trip across the pond and I’m sure that I’ll be visiting our American cousins again soon but in the mean time, I am very glad to be home again. Let me just leave you with this. I hope that you’ve enjoyed a good year. In fact, I hope it was a whopper. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
