With cold nights already kicking in well before the end of the working day, and with wind, rain, frost and in some places snow having already made an appearance, the warmer days of what was a record-setting summer have already become a distant memory. From the conversations I’ve had over the last couple of months, 2019 has for many businesses been a bit of an up and down year. That’s not to say it’s been a bad one, in fact far from it. But it hasn’t been a stand out year or one that will particularly last in the memory. It’s definitely been a busy one again though – in fact when every year seems to be busy regardless with time flying by at an often unbelievable rate so I suspect I’m not the only one looking forward to a well-earned break and a chance to relax and take stock over the Christmas break – I know my colleagues are! Then we can do it all over again come 2020! Since the last edition of SPN, a number of events have taken place both here in the UK and in Europe – Piscina & Wellness Barcelona, the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation show at the NEC and Cologne’s aquanale. Each provided a great chance for visitors from around the world to see dozens of exhibitors and their products or services covering all sectors of the wet leisure industry. In addition, these plus other smaller events also present training opportunities, offer information on trends, are a great place to network and provide venues for celebrating excellence within the industry by way of hosting various awards. For example, the German show was the venue for the presentation of the 2019 EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and
Also, we look at dosing pumps and control systems, products which are often operating behind the scenes, but which play an essential part in any efficient water treatment system and help to make the lives of pool and spa owners so much easier. Another product often hidden away is filtration and we’ve a feature which explores the latest innovations which have lead to improved product performance plus a reduction in water usage and costs. Of course, we’ve also got all the latest industry news from both here in the UK and further afield too plus a piece from the STA who have teamed up with SPATA to raise awareness of the importance of on site trained personnel and offer advice to holiday pool operators. We’ve a great Project Showcase on The Wave in Coventry – the UK’s newest indoor waterpark plus Jamie Adams takes a look at what exactly ‘free’ means. Finally, there’s also content from the BSPF including coverage of the recent SPATA and BISHTA Networking Days which incorporate each association’s AGM. With my round up complete, I trust there’s something of interest for all of SPN’s readers and in the weeks ahead, hopefully there will be time to chill out, appreciate the festivities and of course, enjoy this latest edition. Have a great Christmas break and see you in 2020!

Barnet Celebrates Launch Of Two Leisure Centres Designed By SBA This month, Saunders Boston Architects (SBA) is celebrating the official launches of two leisure centres in Barnet: New Barnet Leisure Centre and Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre. The Cambridge-based architecture practice, which specialises in leisure facility design, was appointed by Barnet London Borough Council to design the centres as part a commitment of over £44m to improve health and wellbeing in the local community. Together, the centres will provide the community with numerous sports and leisure facilities including a 25m regional short course pool, two 25m community pools plus learner pools. The centres have been designed to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle for all members of the community; utilising modern technology, the swimming facilities include a ‘Poolpod’ to provide mobility support and assistance for disabled users. SBA worked alongside GLL, a charitable social enterprise for all the community. Gillan Kelly, Partnership Manager at GLL, said: “Both ourselves and our customers are very pleased with the final outcome of the projects – a design that provides a considerably enhanced mix of provision for all users, enhanced revenue potential, superior integration with the community and a more efficient and effective operation.” The practice also worked alongside main contractor, Graham, to deliver the centres, as
part of a wider £150m partnership between the Barnet London Borough Council and Graham − a five-year strategic programme of capital works to enhance education, community, leisure and operational assets in Barnet. Nathan Swift, Director at SBA, said: “Celebrating the launch of not one, but two, Saunders Boston Architects’ designed leisure centres in Barnet is extremely rewarding; we are committed to designing inclusive buildings that positively impact communities, so it has been fantastic to support the Council’s commitment to the health and
wellbeing of the Barnet community through our design.” Saunders Boston Architects 01223 367733 www.saundersboston.co.uk
Certikin Futureproofs Its Status With Move To New Premises Certikin International, the country’s largest manufacturer and distributor of wet leisure equipment has agreed a pre-let for a new 125,000 sq. ft headquarters in Witney, Oxfordshire. Since 1990, Certikin’s headquarters and main distribution hub has been based in Witney, where over 8,000 product lines are held in stock. In addition to this site, the company has a state-of-the-art computer-controlled swimming pool liner and cover manufacturing plant in Leeds. However, it is in Witney where the majority of the stock and workforce is based. It was therefore considered crucial that the new headquarters remained in the vibrant market town. The impressive new headquarters will be located on Downs Road and is part of the 24-acre site currently being developed by Tungsten Properties. Certikin aims to move into the new building by the end of 2020. Neil Murray, Managing Director for Certikin, commented: “Having outgrown our existing premises, we knew we needed to
4 December 2019 SPN 4+10_SPN_December_19_News_General.indd 4
move to a bigger, better site but we were determined to stay in Witney with its excellent infrastructure and to cause the least possible disruption to our highly valued and experienced employees. As well as being an ideal location, Tungsten Park offers us the space and enhanced facilities that we need to suit all the complex needs of our growing business. This, along with the improved access provided by the new A40 junction, should improve our operational efficiency and secure Certikin’s future as well as that of our 130-strong workforce. This in turn translates to improved service levels for our customers as almost all our products will be under one roof with increased picking locations and more efficient order preparation. We will also benefit by bringing stock held in third party storage back into our main warehouse.” Certikin International 01993 882602 www.certikin.co.uk

Lifestyle Centre To Make Waves With Pool Refurbishment Project Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre is set to refurbish both of its swimming pools this December, following the successful renovation of its diving boards earlier this year. Essential maintenance work to reline the pools will last approximately a month, with the pools closed from 5 December 2019 until 2 January 2020. As part of the project, poolside areas will also be refreshed and redecorated in time for its reopening in the New Year. The refurbishment project is part of an ongoing commitment from Circadian Trust, the not-for-profit organisation who reinvests profits back into local
Active Lifestyle Centres. In recent years, the organisation has overseen major redevelopment projects in Bradley Stoke and Longwell Green, and an extensive pool refurbishment in Yate last year. Centre Manager, Martyn Hinam, said: “It’s a very exciting time for us at Kingswood and I am delighted that we are reinvesting in our swimming pools to extend their lifespan for years to come. We feel extremely privileged to have such loyal members and learn to swim customers who regularly use our pools to keep fit, have fun and learn new skills.” “We constantly strive to improve the experience of all our customers and are looking forward to reopening our newly improved pool facilities in January.” Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre is one of five lifestyle centres operated across South Gloucestershire by Circadian Trust.
Decked Out In Style With The Roldeck This impressive deck level concrete pool, brimming with Certikin equipment, is the workmanship of Sunderland pool dealer Whitewaters Ltd. The crowning glory of this beautiful pool is Certikin’s Roldeck automatic cover and, roll back the cover, there’s plenty of evidence of the company’s other market leading equipment too. Certikin equipment featured in the pool includes the Vision filter, Blue Lagoon domestic UV disinfection system, steel fittings and the Roldeck. Madeto-measure, it is the Rolls Royce of slatted covers in terms of heat insulation, evaporation control, durability and aesthetic appearance. It is manufactured in interlocking
sections similar to a Venetian blind. Fully automatic, the Roldeck comes with a touch pad switch and remote control for easy operation. The touch screen control also allows the control of the pool LED lights. An extensive range of slats is available. The Roldeck’s standard PVC slats come in white, blue, cream, grey, solar and transparent (with a slight blue tint). The solar model, with a black base, collects heat from the sun and transfers it directly into the water, greatly reducing
heating costs. The translucent slats allow under water lighting to shine through. Plus of course, there is the brand new Eclipse range which is available in solar blue, solar clear, solar aluminum look, lagoon and ocean. Whitewaters also installed a Calorex Variheat complete with touch screen control, to look after the heating and environmental control of the pool hall. It is an incredibly versatile environmental control unit that takes care of heating, humidity control, ventilation and energy recovery, which can be tailor-made to suit almost any plant room. NEWS PLANS SUBMITTED FOR NEW MORPETH LEISURE CENTRE Plans to provide Morpeth in Northumberland with a stateof-the-art £21m leisure centre and community services hub have taken a step closer to reality after a detailed proposal for the centre was submitted to Northumberland County Council’s planning service. In addition to various sports and fitness facilities, the leisure provision in the new centre is also set to include a six-lane swimming pool with spectator gallery, a learner pool and spa facilities. The funding for the centre would be financed by Northumberland County Council as part of an ambitious £65m countywide investment programme to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities and to enhance the customer experience. EVAline Lighting Range Outshines The Competition
The recently opened Egham Orbit leisure centre in Surrey is the latest UK facility to install the EVAline LED lighting range. Commissioned by Places for People – as part of the Runnymede Regeneration Partnership with Runnymede Borough Council – the multimillion pound building project for Egham was well underway when EVAline was recognised for the benefits it could bring, compared to the lights that had been earmarked for the main pool, splash zone and hydro pool areas. Having been used on several European installations, and some recent UK ones, EVAline was seen as the most reliable lighting choice in terms of cost and performance. EVAline LED lights are designed for extreme heat, chlorine and humidity, making them ideal for commercial pools as they can withstand the test of time. This durability means the units do not need to be replaced very often, reducing maintenance time and expense. EVAline lights were supplied by Golden Coast – the exclusive UK distributor for Dutch Manufacturer EVA Optic. The installation included 40 Aqua LED Modular lights in the main 25-metre pool hall, 39 EVAline
Downlights in the learner pool and splash zone, and 20 EVAline Downlights in the hydro pool area and surrounding walkways. “EVA Optic is renowned for its high-quality products and the EVAline lights installed at Egham were quite literally a shining example,” said Shaun Adams, Director of Golden Coast. “In these types of builds, indirect lighting is usually preferred, but EVAline’s state-of-the-art design emphasised direct lighting as the superior option. The units provide a constant ambient light level, meaning they use less energy, which contributes to a longer product lifespan. The LED lighting also provides a safer pool environment, as there is minimal glare or reflection on the pool’s surface, giving better visibility into the water.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
ADI Leak Detection Launches Detection And Cost Calculator Specialists ADI Leak Detection have announced that they now offers a free-swimming pool water leak detection and cost calculator on their website. Swimming pool owners can easily use the calculator by selecting currency, entering the cost of water per cubic metre, the shape of the pool, and the amount of water lost in centimetres each day. The readings thrown up are for water lost per minute, day, month, and even a year. Once pool owners have an idea of water loss from the pool, they can consider getting in touch with ADI
Leak Detection to take a look at a leak, if present, before it grows bigger and demands costly repairs. ADI Leak Detection is already a market leader in internal and external water leak detection services in the UK. The company employs PADI qualified Scuba Divers who are fully trained in all aspects of swimming pool leak detection. ADI relies on cutting edge technology and industry leading
processes to pinpoint the location of swimming pool leaks, no matter if the leak is in the pool itself or somewhere in the pool’s filtration system. The technology used by the engineers includes highly accurate pool water volume measuring devices, which are accurate to within 0.1mm – allowing the team to quickly and easily measure the exact volume of water being lost from a pool. This measuring device also allows ADI’s engineers to prove that a leak has been completely fixed, or indeed prove that there is not a leak. ADI Leak Detection 0800 731 3843 www.adileakdetection.co.uk

Heatstar Aftersales Efficiency Increases And Lead Times Decrease Heatstar is known for the excellence of its aftersales care – backed by their fleet of specialist service engineers which are based throughout the UK, they offer nationwide aftersales support for the company’s environmental control systems. 2019 saw Heatstar roll out its brand new field service management software. Named ‘call2field’, it provides the aftersales service department and their fleet of nationwide service engineers with access, via smart phones and tablet devices, to all the facilities of the new software, reducing both paperwork and response times. Preventative measures will also always keep the equipment working correctly and to that end Heatstar offer a range of planned maintenance agreements. The agreements ensure that equipment is properly maintained and serviced by fully qualified Heatstar engineers with an in-depth knowledge and experience of the products. This in turn offers complete peace of mind to the end user and demonstrates the after sales service and support offered by the installer in conjunction with Heatstar. Restoration Of Newcastle’s City Baths Going Swimmingly The highly-anticipated reopening of one of NE1’s most-loved buildings is just around the corner. Work to transform Newcastle’s City Baths is nearing completion and the £7.5m restoration by charity Fusion Lifestyle will see the Grade II building revitalised to combine modern facilities – including a 25m swimming pool, health and fitness suite and a spa with treatment rooms. Specialist works are also ongoing to bring the building’s much-loved Turkish baths back to life – and Newcastle will soon be home to one of only a few still in operation in England. Throughout the redevelopment, Fusion has worked with a group of specialist companies including leisure, design and build expert Createability to sensitively restore as many of the building’s original features as possible, while introducing modern architectural structures. Those looking for a workout with a difference will have access to striking two storey glass-fronted studios, as well as an impressive health and fitness suite, complete with the latest gym and training equipment. The City Baths will also offer a jam-packed calendar of more than 130 exercise classes per week including Fusion’s bespoke HIIT and functional training classes, INTENCITY and popular Les Mills classes. The current building opened to the public in 1928, with the history of baths on this site dating back even further, to when famous Newcastle son, John Dobson, built private baths in 1838 at a cost of £9,500.
Leyton Aims To Recover Up To 33% Of R&D Costs On Bespoke Projects Businesses in the pool and spa sector carrying out bespoke, innovative and challenging work on a daily basis could be eligible for financial rewards from government schemes according to funding specialists Leyton. However, many companies are not taking advantage of what has the potential to be one of the most lucrative funding streams for the industry. “If a business is undertaking technical challenges in their projects, a significant proportion of their development costs can be reclaimed. The scope for qualifying companies should not be underestimated and many businesses are unaware that the work
10 December 2019 SPN 4+10_SPN_December_19_News_General.indd 10
they do qualifies for the scheme,” explained Dr Peter Clark, Technical Consultant at Leyton. Additionally, if a company’s innovation can be attributed from one project and the same development is applied to other work, then it is also worth exploring the costs across the entirety of the work. Designed to reward financially innovative
businesses for carrying out technically challenging work, the Government is looking to inject an additional £2.8 billion into the R&D Tax Credit scheme over the next three years. Regardless of what happens with Brexit, businesses which successfully claim through the scheme can expect to recover between 25% and 33% of their R&D costs. In terms of the pool and spa construction market, no two projects are the same and the bespoke nature of the market aids a perfect fit for this scheme in particular. Waterco Filtration Solutions Feature At The Corniche
Luxuriously appointed and located on the Thames in the London borough of Lambeth, The Corniche provides residents with panoramic views over the city’s sprawling skyline. Designed by internationally acclaimed architectural practice Foster & Partners, the development includes extensive residents’ facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool and vitality spa built by Aqua Platinum Projects. Being a prestigious development, the pool and spa’s filtration equipment had to be of the highest quality and durable enough to withstand constant use and contact with chemicals. With residents paying a premium to live in luxury, the reputation of Aqua Platinum Projects was on the line, so it was critical that the system was reliable and durable. Knowing that the globally renowned water filtration specialists at Waterco had been supplying equipment for over 30 years meant that the team at Aqua Platinum Projects had full confidence in the supply, quality of product, and after-sales service from the manufacturer. “The heart of any swimming pool is the filtration and we insist on the best as that is what our clients expect,” said Aqua Platinum Projects Managing Director, Ryan Fronda. “That’s why we only use Waterco filtration and pumps.”
Working in conjunction with their preferred distributor, Paramount Products, Ryan’s team installed the following Waterco equipment in The Corniche’s pool and vitality spa: • 2 x SMDD1050 Micron Commercial Fibreglass sand filters • 2 x 5hp Hydrostar high-performance pumps • 2 x SMDD1050 Micron Commercial Fibreglass sand filters • 2 x 6hp Hydrostar high-performance pumps. “When we were asked to be involved in such a fantastic project, we were more than delighted,” said Waterco Europe CEO, Tony Fisher. “Appreciating how the pool and spa were such an important part of the development and having the opportunity to work with the talented team at Aqua Platinum Projects again, was a rewarding experience. The final product is breathtaking.”
Proposals Submitted For Family-oriented Waterpark Resort Great Wolf Resorts is proposing to build a new family resort near Chesterton in Oxfordshire. Great Wolf Lodge, which is owned, managed and developed by Great Wolf Resorts, is a leading brand of family resorts in the US that promotes a fully integrated experience anchored by an indoor waterpark, aimed at families with young children. North America’s largest owner, operator and developer of family-oriented indoor waterpark resorts, Great Wolf Lodge opened its first resort in Wisconsin Dells in 1997. In the UK, the Bicester area has been selected as the location for the first resort due to the community’s values, proximity to major urban centres, as well as links to the motorway network. For the company’s first UK site, awardwinning architects EPR will create an adapted design to reflect the nature of the site and its location in Oxfordshire. Great Wolf Resorts are also working with landscape architects BMD to create a high-quality, sustainable landscape scheme that is considerate to the site and the surrounding area. Following a consultation earlier this year, some updates were made to previous proposals to ensure that the company delivers the best result for the community. If the plans are approved, the project will bring £200m investment to the local economy and will support approximately 600 permanent jobs on site following completion.

BAM Secures Major Leisure Centre Scheme In Buckinghamshire Chiltern District Council has appointed BAM Construction as the preferred bidder to build its Chiltern Lifestyle Centre in Amersham. Approximately £36m is being spent on the new facilities which will open by the end of 2021. The scheme includes an eight-lane 25-metre swimming pool with viewing, a diving / teaching pool alongside a kids’ splash pad area, dry diving training facility and various other fitness and health facilities. The new leisure centre will replace Chiltern Pools which after 53 years of service, due to design and condition issues, had become uneconomical to operate.

BAM is currently finalising the contract with Chiltern District Council, and is presently operating under a preconstruction agreement. The project was procured competitively under the Southern Construction Framework. The current leisure facilities are over 50 years old and described by the local authority as being in urgent need of repair. The old buildings will be demolished and Amersham library has been temporarily re-located. BAM’s Construction Director Mick Kelly said: “These are important changes for local people and we fully appreciate the
need to go about our work considerately and respectfully. How we build has always been as important to BAM as what we build. We’ll bring our expertise in creating leisure sector developments to this scheme that will transform the facilities for people here.” Cllr Mike Stannard, Deputy Leader of Chiltern District Council; and Cabinet Member for Support Services, said: “After so many years of planning, it is fantastic that we are finally at the stage where work is starting on site. This is a major development and our priority is to ensure minimal impact on residents, pool users and staff while the work takes place.”

NEWS PLANNERS SIGN OFF DERBY’S NEW POOL DESIGNS Enhanced designs for the new swimming pool complex at Moorways in Derby have been signed off by local planners. Designs submitted during the summer were extended to include a water park. It now features two four storey flumes, England’s first wave generating wow ball and the first wave rider slide of its type. For added fun there will also be dual racer slides, a beach area and water playground with mini slides and water jets. Changes have also been made to the exterior which will now be clad in dual tone silver to gold metallic material that will shift in colour depending on the position of the sun. Claire Davenport, Director for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “Now we have planning permission for this exciting project, we can continue to move forward with the detailed designs.”
PITSEA POOL PLANS GET APPROVAL Plans to build a new swimming pool in Pitsea, Essex, have finally been approved. Basildon councillors gave the go-ahead for a 25-metre pool to be built as an extension to the existing Eversley Leisure Centre. Approximatey £2m will be spent on the project, which will primarily be used for casual swimming and family fun sessions. Funding for the Pitsea project was actually secured back in 2018 by the previous local administration, but it couldn’t press ahead unless support by residents was shown for it. A public consultation into the development found that around 80% said they would use a new pool at least once a week, with the majority of the remaining 20% saying they would use it on a monthly basis.

Great Yarmouth Gets Set For New Water And Leisure Complex
Great Yarmouth Borough Council is getting set to build a new Water and Leisure Complex in place of the town’s old Marina Centre. The once-in-ageneration investment will be a major year-round boost to the flagship resort whilst supporting community health and well-being. This exciting new destination attraction along the Golden Mile will benefit the seafront and whole borough for up to 40 years, acting as a catalyst for potential further investment and an important community hub for the promotion of both indoor and outdoor activity. The project team has worked with Sport England, Active Norfolk and consultants to ensure that the agreed facilities meet requirements for sports development, disabled access, and the future needs of the local area. They have also helped to develop a mix of facilities that are as sustainable and affordable as possible, in addition to reflecting the prime seafront location and the Council’s ambition to create a truly
year-round ‘anchor attraction’. Wet facilities at the new centre will include: • Six-lane 25m pool with full disabled access • Pool suitable for galas and competitions, with seating for 120 spectators • Confidence water area and learner pool with moveable floor • Leisure water with fun play features, two water flumes and a splash pad • Health suite with sauna, steam and spa. The Borough Council is committed to modernising and enhancing the health and fitness activities and opportunities available to all local residents, in addition to supporting the vital visitor economy. The total project cost for the new complex is expected to be approximately £25.9m. The old Marina Centre closed to the public on 31 October 2019. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2020, with the new complex open during summer 2021.
Work Underway At State-of-the-art Norfolk Leisure Centre The start of construction of the new state-of-the-art Sheringham Leisure Centre, in Norfolk, was marked with a ceremonious ground-breaking event on Tuesday 29 October. The new centre, which will replace the existing ‘Splash’ facility, was designed by Cambridge-based architecture practice, Saunders Boston Architects. The project will include a sixlane, 25-metre pool; a 13-metre learner pool with a moving floor to cater for different activities and user groups; a fitness suite; community spaces; multi-purpose studios; a spin studio; and a café. Following planning permission
being granted in late 2018, construction contractor, Metnor, has now started work on-site, with the new facility expected to be ready for use in the summer of 2021. Nathan Swift, Director at Saunders Boston Architects, said: “It’s always an exciting moment when building work begins on-site, especially when the end result will not only provide high quality fitness facilities, but a hub for the Artist’s impression of the new Sheringham leisure centre
local community to benefit from sports and leisure. “Our design for Sheringham Leisure Centre has had a community focus at its core from the outset; we’ve paid homage to the existing Splash facility through the barrel-vaulted roof and took conceptual inspiration throughout our design process from the local North Norfolk coast line.” The design incorporates a combination of water saving measures, air source heat pumps and solar hot water. Saunders Boston Architects worked alongside North Norfolk District Council, with funding from Sports England, to design a facility that is both economically and environmentally conscious.

Places Leisure Signs Long-term Partnership With RLSS UK Places Leisure has signed an exclusive three-year partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), to deliver an exceptional lifeguard qualification to support their blended lifeguarding approach across its portfolio of swimming pools. The operator, which runs 71 swimming pools across the UK and employs more than 2,000 lifeguards, has invested in technology in most of its pools to support lifeguards and help them provide a safer service. The new long-term partnership with the UK’s leading water safety will give Places Leisure staff access to the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), the sector’s most robust lifeguarding qualification and the most recognised lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland. Continually reviewed to meet the needs and demands of the leisure sector, the NPLQ combines lifeguard education with advances in technology to give lifeguards all the skills they need to reduce risks. “We are the pioneers of blended lifeguarding in the UK leisure sector. In an ever-changing world, we are always looking

at better and more effective ways to deliver a quality and safe service. For us, it is all about the use of technology alongside lifeguards to add an additional layer of safety,” said Andy Reid, Head of Safety at Places Leisure. The organisation will benefit from other RLSS UK qualifications, such as First Aid at Work and Automated External Defibrillator (AED), all of which are regulated and endorsed by CIMSPA, as well as ongoing guidance and support from the charity, which includes access to RLSS UK’s Operator Steering Group.
Jo Talbot, Director of Commercial Operations at RLSS UK, said: “It’s important to us that we support and work with operators to develop and evolve our training and qualification offering to meet industry changes and demands, especially with technology, to ensure the safety of the millions of customers who enjoy swimming.” RLSS UK 0300 323 0096 www.rlss.org.uk

ISPE Back-ToBasics/Revision Seminar Returns In February Lifeguards Celebrated At Stoke Mandeville Stadium Competition Five lifesavers working at facilities operated by the Birmingham Community Leisure Trust (BCLT) have won a national lifeguard competition, beating teams from all over the UK to win the title, Serco Leisure Lifeguarding Champions of the Year, in an event recently staged at the iconic Stoke Mandeville Stadium. Tim Reynolds, Jack Roper, Zoe Rhodes, Ryan Padbury and John Roper, who all work at leisure centres for BCLT in and around the city, formed the winning team, beating lifesaving squads from as far afield as Bangor in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. This annual event tests every element of a lifeguard’s skill set, but each year has a slightly different mix of tasks to be completed. In previous years, as well as the standard pool-based activities, teams
have had to deal with a mock high-risk incident, fitness tests, as well as CPR and theory-based assessments. This year’s event introduced a Wipeout Arena finale, where the three teams with the highest scores after all standard tasks had been completed had to race round the indoor inflatable course to be crowned overall champions. For the past two years, a team comprising lifeguards from five Bolton leisure centres has won the trophy, but with this year’s event attracting over 120 participants, the competition was expected to be tougher than ever. And so it proved, with just seven points separating three teams at the end of the contest. Stoke Mandeville Stadium’s team, entering for the first time ever, and the lifeguards from Serco Leisure’s West Lancashire centres were the other medallists.
The Institute held a very successful Back-to-Basics/ Revision Seminar at the start of 2019 and it hopes to repeat this towards the end of February next year at the Watermill Hotel, Bourne End, near Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. The seminar is free of charge to ISPE students and looks at the four exam subjects of Filtration, Construction, Chemicals and Heating. Each of the four ISPE tutors give a presentation outlining where marks may be won or lost, including examples of questions, and showing how best to answer them. There is ample opportunity to ask questions and those who have attended these events previously have often gone on to do very well in their ISPE exams. Light refreshments are provided and delegates earn four CPD points, too. To register your interest in this seminar, contact ISPE and as soon as a date is confirmed, interested parties will be notified. The seminar is open to all ISPE members and non-members, for a small charge of £25 or £30 respectively but is free of charge for ISPE students. For more details of the ISPE, including membership, the Home Study Course, ISPE Seminars and Workshops, ISPE-Endorsed Training as well as the ISPE CPD scheme, please see online or contact the ISPE office. Record Growth For Rookie Lifeguard Programme Following the announcement of a Strategic Partnership with Swim England, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has seen an unprecedented boost in take-up of their Rookie Lifeguard Instructor courses. The partnership was quick to focus on making it easy for leisure centres to get their existing swimming teachers qualified to teach the Rookie Lifeguard programme and in response, launched a new route to qualification starting from only £10! The response was an additional 500 instructors qualifying since March and in turn, this has made an extra 23,000+ awards available to young lifesavers making the Rookie Lifeguard programme now more accessible than ever! Clubs and Freedom Leisure, some of the UK’s best-known multi-site leisure operators, have been quick to snap up Rookie Lifeguard Instructors to meet a growing demand for the programme, with sites hosting Rookie Lifeguard taster sessions, right across June’s RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week campaign, throughout August’s #BeaRookieLifeguard campaign and beyond. The programme has been designed to be flexible, robust and crucially, good fun too.
Its format means it can be run as a standalone course by lifesaving clubs, leisure centres and swimming schools or as part of school swimming lessons. With three levels to achieve and stages within each level, it helps retain learner swimmers by providing a pathway to reach a higher level of swimming ability. Rookie Lifeguard is an excellent retention tool for leisure operators, encouraging young people to maintain and develop their swimming prowess, offering a fun and engaging way of learning and maintaining lifesaving skills, even training the next generation of lifeguards! FITT Launches FITT B-Active Rigid
Domestic Pools Get A Fun And Fitness Boost Endless Pools have released two products designed to transform the traditional domestic pool into a complete home gym – while was also adding great options for fun and relaxation. The Endless Pools Fastlane® Sport XP generates a current that can be used for swimming in place, adding resistance to aquatic exercise, or creating a ‘lazy river’ effect. A lower-cost adaptation of their existing Fastlane Pro, the Sport XP features a newly engineered current that’s smooth, airless, and perfectly paced for the recreational swimmer. The 30-year-old company also announced the Hydrostride™, an underwater treadmill that can be installed in almost any new or refurbished pool. With a comfortably wide belt and speeds up to 5.5 miles per hour, the Hydrostride delivers opportunities for low-impact cardiovascular exercise, crosstraining and recovery. Available exclusively through participating pool builders, the two products greatly expand the utility of traditional pools for all ages. “We’re committed to creating products that give people easier access to wellness options that they’ll look forward to,” said Darren Pearse, Endless Pools’ US-based General Manager. “Both new products can help people exercise, rehabilitate, and enjoy active family time, all from the convenience of their backyard pools.”
Feeding from its extensive knowledge in the production of water network pipe systems, the requests of the end users, and its distinctive talent for continuous innovation, FITT has produced FITT B-Active Rigid, a new rigid pipe that protects against handling shocks, adapts itself to ground movements and makes the installation of in-ground swimming pools much easier and safer. Produced with patent pending Shock Wave technology, which guarantees resistance to impacts, FITT B-Active Rigid is a 3-layer PVC-A pipe that meets the testing requirements of the EN ISO 1452 standard. In order to test the actual performance levels of the product, FITT’s R&D lab simulated situations that could occur during installation: the sample was subjected to impact test at low temperature (-10°C) and soon afterwards was pressure tested. The results show that even after a significant shock at low temperature, FITT B-Active Rigid can still guarantee effective performance. PVC-A is the innovative polymeric alloy that combines the resistance of PVC-U (polyvinyl chloride) and the ductility of CPE (chlorinated polyethylene), which prevents cracking. The 3-layer structure is made up of an outer layer that is shock resistant, an intermediate layer that prevents cracks and an inner chlorine resistant layer. In order to ensure a safe water system, FITT B-Active Rigid can be connected to FITT B-Active Flex and to other flexible hoses or rigid pipes. “FITT B-Active Rigid is our tangible answer to the needs of end users. It’s the result of the experience acquired in other sectors, combined with our drive to always challenge ourselves, looking for innovative and technologically advanced solutions. With FITT B-Active Rigid and FITT B-Active Flex we can now meet all the needs of installers,” said Alessandro Mezzalira CEO of FITT. FITT S.p.A. +39 0444 46 10 00 www.fitt.com

Going Without The Flow! Accurate flow measurement can offer multiple benefits in various types of pipework systems, but retrofitting conventional meters has the disadvantage of an interruption to supply during installation. Rather than being an in-line unit or requiring a borehole, the new U1000 V2 model from GF Piping Systems utilises ultrasound technology to achieve accurate, contactless data readings. The easily installed and compact metering devices are not only non-disruptive and cost effective, but also support digital interfaces. The information provided is valuable for billing and auditing as well as for process control purposes: including dosing of additives, batching, blending and safety. The U1000 V2 is therefore ideal for use in many settings including the swimming pools and spa industry. “Across many sectors, oversized

flow meters are still used frequently: requiring installation by specialists and the costly interruption of production for retrofitting,” commented Yannic Baeuchle, Product Manager for Automation at GF Piping Systems. “This not only causes unnecessary costs, but also increases demands on the workforce. Additionally, invasive sensors can encounter aggressive conditions and therefore often prove to be less durable. Fitted in as little as two minutes onto pipe diameters from 22-180mm, and positioned ‘without’ rather than within the flow, U1000 V2 meters eliminate contamination and ensure a long low maintenance life is guaranteed.” Emphasising the suitability of the
U1000 V2 to provide exact, contactless flow measurement across all sectors, Yannic added: “The flow measuring device integrates smoothly into complex systems, processes and can be combined with existing pipelines, fittings, valves and automation technology elements from GF Piping Systems.” GF Piping Systems 024 7653 5535 www.gfps.com

Swimstream B-Model Provides A Constant And Powerful Current With more than 20 years’ experience, the Swimstream brand has been producing powerful swimming machines (countercurrent systems) for the European market and they custom-make all their products to fit the projects or products of each of their clients. The power of motors used combined with the sheer size of water outlets and the carefully designed inner workings of the company’s swimming machines result in an even, wide and laminar swim current and the company’s products are suitable for a variety of environments, including salt water pools. Recently a Swimstream B-Model was added to the product range. This design has many applications. It could be incorporated in a pool wall, cast completely into a concrete structure, bolted against a stainless-steel pool or welded against PVC, PP and PE. In fact, this and all Swimstream products can be used with any type of pool finish, be it

liner, tiles, mosaic, ecoFINISH™ or something else. To match the design of the pool, the swimming machine is available in four colours. In addition, highgloss and satin stainless steel cover plates are also available. As with all of the company’s swimming machines, it generates an adjustable, powerful, wide, even and constant swim current. The propeller is capable of moving more than 1,000 m3 of water per hour which is more than many other ‘turbine’-like systems and almost fully incomparable to pump-based jet systems. As this model features a superior quality 48V underwater motor, a technical pit is not necessary and the Swimstream B-Model is an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The Selcoperm electrochlorination system from Grundfos is an on site sodium hypochlorite generator. It creates sodium hypochlorite on demand by electrolysis, to produce a safe-to-handle low concentration. The raw ingredients that are needed are salt made up into a brine solution and electricity. One benefit of choosing the Selcoperm system is that it is fully endorsed by TÜV meaning that the design has been thoroughly assessed and accredited, and the system is suitable for location in a safe area. Not many, if any, other manufacturers can claim this. The electrochlorination process generates a small amount of hydrogen, which is explosive at concentrations above 4% so must be dealt with, meaning a typical installation should be sited in a Zone l or Zone ll ATEX area – something which is not ideal or often possible for a swimming pool installation. However, Selcoperm’s Safety Concept and proven design double-contains any hydrogen in the system and safely dilutes and discharges it to a safe point outside. Thus, making the whole process very safe for the operator and removing any risk of explosion. Another reason to consider the Selcoperm is cost. The price to generate sodium hypochlorite considering the price of salt and electricity is at least half the price compared to the costs of commercial 14-15% sodium hypochlorite. Not only is there a huge potential cost savings on chemicals, the Selcoperm has a proven and tested safety concept, hypochlorite is also safe to handle and made up on demand – there’s no waste or degradation. Other systems from Grundfos include chlorine dioxide generators and controllers suitable for swimming pools and spas. Grundfos 01525 850000 www.grundfos.com

Certified by an independent test institute, a sensational peak performance of 91.7% was attested according to DIN EN 129751,2. The premium system, which directly pumps the pool water without any additional heat exchangers, can be easily mounted on flat roofs, pitched roofs and unshaded fences and walls. It is extremely resistant to salt and sea water plus chlorinated swimming pool water as well as to the UV radiation of the sun. In contrast to rubber-like competing
products, SOLAR-RIPP® is resistant to under-pressure issues and rodent bites so can therefore easily be laid on the ground. The large hose inner diameter reduces the pressure loss and eliminates a blockage even after years of use. The ribbed surface increases the heatabsorbing surface by three times and gaps between the individual solar tubes contribute to the resistance to wind and storms. Spa guests can visit for the day, an evening or a three-hour session if on a Center Parcs break. Katie Murphy, Business Manager at the Good Spa Guide said: “The Good Spa Guide would like to congratulate Aqua Sana Sherwood Forest for winning the Best Destination Spa category in the Good Spa Awards. The high number of public votes reflect not only the exceptionally high quality and high standard of facilities and customer service at Aqua Sana Sherwood Forest but also the public’s fondness for and appreciation of the spa, its facilities and its people.”
Aquavia Spa – a leading manufacturer of hot tubs and swim spas – has launched a brand new corporate identity. With more than 30 years of experience that guarantee the quality of its wide range of products, the company has decided to reinvent itself and start a new era. The new logo has been developed based on a design of simple and balanced lines, is easy to adapt and its aim is to gain visibility without losing the brand essence. The change of font to a sans-serif one and the new silver toned palette provide the necessary nuances of design, innovation and exclusivity. A decontextualisation that steps back from the obvious blue = water and approaches the potential target market. The idea of the new design arises from the premise of creating a unique and readable logo that defines the company’s mission and values. As for the imagotype, the circle symbolises perfection and eternity, as it has no beginning or end, and is used to represent the movement of the water. The circular shape projects a positive emotional message reinforcing the brand’s image and, in turn, it serves as the stamp of the firm. Aquavia Spa +34 973 533 795 www.aquaviaspa.com

Expansion Success For Home Grown Spa Brand
RotoSpa – the UK’s only spa pool manufacturer – has exceeded its dealer expansion plan in 2019 and is looking to build on this success in 2020. The experience and knowledge gained from 16 years immersed in the industry has proven invaluable to the Birmingham-based firm. “We know what works, there is a successful dealer model that we have identified and trialled and we have innovative expansion plans for 2020. There is a clear opportunity for dealers to partner with our company and share in the demand for UK made products,” said Director, Karl Rowntree. “RotoSpas are unique, we are often referred to as entry level spas, but we can’t be compared to other roto moulded manufacturers, the only comparison is the moulding process itself. Our spas are the most durable and portable on the UK market. We use industry-leading components on a par with the most expensive spa brands, with features such as remote

WiFi connectivity and heat sources that use up to 75% less energy! “The RotoSpa range offers choice for customers of all budgets and for those with challenging access to their location of relaxation. We offer a large UK based stock with industry leading delivery times; online stock lists and ordering allows you to conduct transactions when it suits your business. At the start of October, Rigo Spa – the Merseyside-based specialist designers, fabricators and installers of pools, vitality spas, saunas, steam rooms and all other types of thermal bathing rooms – announced that Director Tom Coan had gained sole ownership of both Rigo Spa Ltd and Rigo Construction Ltd. This is an exciting time for Tom and the Rigo Spa businesses with lots of new ventures, projects and products in the pipeline to be rolled out in the very near future. A truly defining time for Rigo, a number of new experienced team members, coupled with enhanced infrastructure changes and internal promotions have already been implemented to realise this new era. A major change is that after nine years of manufacturing tiled pools, spas and swim spas for the industry via Certikin (as the distributor), as of 1 January 2020, Rigo will be selling direct to the trade. This significant change has been a longstanding request from the pool and spa industry. The benefits to customers include: • Competitive costs through direct trading • Dedicated account managers based in the factory as one point of contact • Real time information. No time lost in waiting on a third party. This in turn allows you to be more efficient with your client(s) • Imagery and videos available anytime throughout manufacture to show the current status of any product(s) • Full technical support on products including an installation service for split shell joins and/or full installations if required. In addition, customers can now also have their own company logo on the technical drawings and on the manufactured product which strengthens brand awareness to clients plus Design and Technical Drawings inclusive of 3D models also provide manufacturing transparency for all involved. SplinterWorks’ Vertex Slide Is The Art Of Fall
Proving their slides are not just for summer, SplinterWorks’ latest work titled, Vertex, serves as a magnificent sculptural highlight all year round. The mirror-polished stainlesssteel sculpture, echoes its environment in the intriguing contorted reflections, making a poignant but gentle impact on the surroundings. In this case, reflecting the dazzling autumn colours on Lake Winnipesaukee in the New England region of the United States. Standing at 3.6m high, the designers positioned it right on the corner of the existing in-ground pool by the infinity edge, to keep as much deck space free as possible, and to capitalise on the best vantage point of the lake-side position. As with all SplinterWorks’ slides, the structure is internally water cooled to keep the handrail and sliding surface at a safe temperature during the summer months.
Micro jets lubricate the chute keeping the temperature down and the velocity up! Immediately after installation, the latest delighted client said of the Vertex: “This slide is totally awesome! When you buy something like this essentially online, you never know what you’re going to get. I must say, by any standard of promise versus performance, I’m blown away! It’s huge and is both art and science! Can’t wait to try it out today at our pool party!” The SplinterWorks collection of bespoke luxury indoor and outdoor water slides are available to commission. Each pool slide design is inspired by the individual setting and to resonate with each client’s style. Slides are produced in a variety of materials to suit climate, budget and surroundings. Adtrack Help Master Pools Guild To Rebrand The Master Pools Guild, a global network of luxury pool designers, has announced the launch of an exciting company rebrand in association with leading digital marketing agency, Adtrak. The new brand has been developed to bring the company up-to-date for a modern market, whilst also ensuring consistency across all brand elements and cementing the Guild’s standing as industry leaders. The project has been headed up by Nottingham-based marketing agency, Adtrak, and has involved a complete overhaul of the Guild’s brand, including its logo, colour scheme, font, tone of voice, social media icons and brand guidelines. Chris Robinson, Managing Director at Adtrak, said: “We knew that the Master Pools Guild could benefit from a rebrand. Not only would this refresh and re-energise their global identity, but it would also achieve a strong and recognisable brand which can be applied consistently across all their marketing channels. “The team at Adtrak have developed a brand which tells the MPG story in a much stronger, more unified way. We have introduced a new colour palette, which includes a distinctive bright orange intended to help the Guild stand out against the industry’s popular blue tones. We have also worked closely with the Master Pools Guild to create a clear and consistent tone of voice which reflects the company’s core values and vision for the future. “We’re thrilled with the finished result and have loved working on such an exciting project. We will continue to support the Guild following the launch of the new brand, ensuring it is applied effectively.” The extensive rebrand project, completed by A dtrak, was announced to Guild members at a week-long Master Pools event in Toronto, Canada. Adtrak attended the Toronto event and were on hand to launch the rebrand in partnership with the Guild. Adtrak 0115 959 8900 www.adtrak.co.uk

Fluidra Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Unprecedented Water Show Fluidra, a global leader in the pool and wellness equipment business, celebrated its 50th Anniversary with an unprecedented water show in the swimming pool at Club Natació Atlètic Barceloneta (CNAB) in Barcelona, an event attended by some 900 spectators. The show, which told the story of Fluidra’s trajectory over the past five decades, was designed and directed by prestigious artistic director Franc Aleu, winner of the most recent Catalan
Regional Government’s National Culture Award (Premis Nacionals de Cultura). The event also featured a performance by the Kallipolis Club artistic swimming team, which was directed by Anna Tarrés, former coach of the Spanish national team. The impressive light and musical show, a convergence of art and beauty with science and technology, also showcased Fluidra’s most advanced technological solutions,
including underwater LED lighting, dynamic water screens, multi-directional nozzles, parabolic and dancing fountains. The event was organised by Bea Strebl’s team at Fluidra, with Julián García and Héctor Cruz hosting the event at the CNAB. From humble beginnings to global wet leisure powerhouse – you can read more about the history of Fluidra over the last 50 years on the SPN website.
Holiday Pool Inspires Bespoke NIVEKO Pool Design The NIVEKO Overflow Advance is a pool with a difference. Rather than featuring a grille type system, NIVEKO has designed this model with a continuous slot around the pool edge into which the water overflows. This feature combines with fantastic finishes of glued stone produced from natural granite. This clean design means that the finishing materials are located under the water level, resulting in a clear line of the pool edge and an accentuated shape. This unique solution caught the eye of German resident Mr Neumann whose friend was having a pool installed. Commenting on his own experience, he said: “My wife and I enjoy swimming and it is our children’s hobby, too. We all feel that in the hustle and bustle of the modern world we should take care to get more exercise, during which we also actually relax. When we decided to reconstruct our garden and terrace, we had a pool installed at the same time. And so how did this happen? By coincidence, a good friend of ours was also choosing a pool at the time and it was quite by chance that we came across NIVEKO. I personally was particularly impressed with the technology and unique design – we care about
quality, which is clearly evident.” The chosen pool was a grey 15x5m NIVEKO Overflow Advance featuring individually designed steps in one corner. Explaining the choice, Mr Neumann said: “While we were on holiday in Greece the hotel swimming pool caught our eye and NIVEKO, as a manufacturer of custom pools, was the only firm able to put our idea into practice. Eventually everything was completed just how we wanted it and we couldn’t be happier with our pool.” NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Industry Events Round Out Another Busy Year With 2019 almost complete, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of industry events and thanks the individuals that have played their part in another busy year
T
he BSPF has been hard at work, not only in the UK but also in Europe and with colleagues around the world, with several events organised and attended over the past few months. These include the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA) meeting in Barcelona and the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) meeting in Gothenburg and also the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards held in Cologne. The 3rd WAPSA meeting was held as part of Piscina & Wellness, in Barcelona and there were updates on the progress to date regarding the subgroups looking at data (statistics), education, safety, and environmental impacts. The World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations will be sharing information within the group, and this should benefit every national pool and spa association when it is disseminated, to help improve the services offered by members. Cologne hosted the 7th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards and congratulations to our UK winners for their successes. It was fantastic to see BISHTA and SPATA members present to receive their awards, please see page 62 for more information on all of the winners. Anyone keen to enter future European Pool and Spa Awards will need to be a winner in the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (hosted by BISHTA and SPATA). The Awards are being announced on Tuesday 28 January at the Industry Gala Dinner held during SPATEX 2020. Please contact the office to book your seats for the Gala Evening. Attendance at the event is open to everyone (whether or not you are BISHTA / SPATA members). The price is £71.95 + VAT per person, and you can book tables of up to ten people. Back in the UK, there has been a BISHTA
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 33_SPN_December_19_CH.indd 33
presence at the Hoseasons’ Owners’ Conference in Brighton, at The Glamping Show at Stoneleigh Park and the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation Show at the NEC, Birmingham. These again provided great opportunities for BISHTA (and also for SPATEX at the NEC event) to work together to promote the importance of getting the correct advice for hot tubs being used in business settings and also for this sector to know more about the relevance of SPATEX and the exhibitors they can meet in Coventry to discuss their wet leisure needs! SPATA has also been busy attending the Futurescape exhibition at Sandown Park racecourse in Surrey and thanks are due to Falcon Pools for their support of this exhibition. Both BISHTA and SPATA have been holding their respective Information and Networking Days in Andover plus also in Doncaster this year, making the days available in both north and south locations to reduce the journey times for members to meet up. The range of quality of speakers was excellent, and for more about these days, please see pages 34 and 35. Please note the presentations are available in the members’ area of the website. There has also been a SPATA regional meeting held at Calorex. My thanks go to Steve Hallam and Richard Carrington for the use of their respective facilities. Progress is ongoing regarding Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and SPATA and its supplier members have been responsible for organising a sauna and steam course, and there are plans in the New Year to organise courses on heat pumps, liners and a new course on environmental control and ductwork. These courses will be tutored by a range of members (depending on the specific course), but a huge thank you to Aquaflex, AstralPool UK, Calorex (Dantherm), Certikin International, Golden Coast, Heatstar, and Plastica for their
respective contributions. Finally, this time of year gives me the chance to thank the dedicated team that ensures the smooth running of the work on behalf of members and exhibitors/visitors; Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Isabel Lock, Katy Warren and Debbie Thornton are all working hard in the Andover office on behalf of the BSPF, BISHTA, SPATA and PIP. I would also like to thank Karen Goddard who has recently left after nearly a decade (to spend more time with her husband) and also to Claire Foss who has also left to take on a new career challenge. The SPATEX team; Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and Thay Castro, Howard Gosling (SPATEX Chairman and to the other SPATEX Directors). To the other dedicated Chairs for the respective Boards, Committees and Councils: Will Dando (BSPF), Richard Carrington (SPATA), Dyfed Thompson-Smith, (PIP), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA) and Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. The many dedicated Committee members, including the Technical teams, have also worked tirelessly again this year, under the chairmanship of Peter Lang and Howard Gosling. SPATA is also very fortunate to have five inspectors to call upon (Peter Lang, Tim Bareham, Ian Betts, Steve Conway and Jim Gordon). My thanks to you all. Have a great festive break; see you at SPATEX 2020.

The BSPF President’s Weekend (aka the Pool & Hot Tub Industry Weekend) was held in the historic seafront resort of Brighton from 13-15 September. The event was hosted by Will Dando – BSPF President from 2018-2020 – and his wife, Trudy Hillman. The President’s Weekend is a social event, now held on a biennial basis, open to the whole industry to attend. It is an opportunity for the reigning BSPF President to provide a combined networking opportunity for business and pleasure and celebrates the President’s two years in office whilst bringing the industry closer together. The event was hosted at The Grand Hotel, Brighton – a historic Victorian luxury hotel built in 1864 and famed for hosting the various British party-political conferences – it is situated directly on the seafront and is well placed for enjoying the sights and pleasures of the coastal resort. Guests were welcomed on Friday evening, by Will and Trudy (with help from Sallie Leslie-Golding from the BSPF), starting with a private dining experience in the Regent Room at The Grand Hotel. The weekend’s events continued on Saturday morning with a tour of the Old Police Cells Museum, where guests had the chance to experience among other things a cell lock-in – chance to re-live what it would have been like when the Mods and Rockers were arrested after the notorious ‘Brighton Beach Brawl’ in 1964 with 40 people to a cell! There was also the opportunity to try on some of the police uniforms from years gone by – as you can imagine, it got a bit riotous, but only with lots of laughs and creating some great photo opportunities! After an afternoon of ‘R&R’ with time to enjoy the fantastic weather and the sights of Brighton, guests met up again in the evening at ‘The Cricketers’ in the famous Brighton Lanes. The pub dates back to 1547, making it the oldest one in Brighton and it is also famous for being immortalised by renowned author Graham Greene, in his book ‘Brighton Rock’. Guests enjoyed a lovely meal in fabulous surroundings while enjoying the vocal tones of local singer Natalie Pettit. The BSPF’s thanks go to everyone who supported Will’s President’s Weekend, and the association are very grateful for all of Will’s hard work and dedication during his time in office so far. Will passes over the presidency to Jamie Smith at the 2020 Industry Gala Awards Evening hosted by BISHTA and SPATA on 28 January and held during SPATEX 2020 (from 28-30 January). If you would like to see a taster of the weekend, you can view the President Weekend album on the BISHTA and SPATA websites. If you are interested in information regarding the various events held by the BSPF, BISHTA and SPATA, or to book seats for the Industry Gala Awards Evening, please contact the BSPF office.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
SPATEX 2020 Promises An Immersive Experience! With a raft of new product launches and the cream of the international wet leisure industry amassed within the Ricoh Arena’s Ericsson Hall, SPATEX 2020 promises to be spectacular. Here’s why you can’t afford not to go to Coventry in January!
T
here’s just under two months to go till the curtain rises on the UK Industry’s event of the year and Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “For me, this year’s fantastic build-up to SPATEX 2020 has been characterised by so many companies returning and requesting larger stands. For example, Aqua Warehouse, AstralPool, SCP, Spa Solutions, Dryden Aqua, Paramount Pools, Lighthouse, Ardex, Blue Whale Spas, Ocea, Passion Spas, The Mosaic Spa Company and Spa Parts Vortex have all requested more space.” This is coupled with a raft of new companies!
NEW! THE GREEN LIGHT This year’s SPATEX is promoting an awareness of the environment. SPATEX is leading the way – from supplying recycled PET environmentally friendly lanyards, compostable containers and cutlery, plus minimal food packaging to providing recycling bins in the exhibition hall. You will also see lots of new products promoting a low energy, low carbon footprint.
NEW ISPE WORKSHOPS SPATEX is well known for being the Industry’s greatest source of FREE knowledge with CPD points and certificates of attendance available to all attendees of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) seminars in Arena 1. This year, there are 22 different sessions running throughout the three days of the Show, of which 16 are new titles and six are promoting Green issues (highlighted in green on the website and in the show guide). For example: • Wednesday 29 January at 11.00 (Arena 1) – Energy Savings for your Pool • Wednesday 29 January at 13.30 (Arena 1) – Energy Savings via the use of Automatic Valves. Once again there will be a parallel seminar programme in Arena 2 with a host of diverse topics ranging from how to set up an e-commerce webshop on Tuesday to the special needs of animal hydrotherapy pools and spas on Wednesday.
THERE’S A PARTY AND YOU’RE INVITED! The ‘Green Theme’ extends to the now famous SPATEX networking party on the Wednesday evening in the Ricoh Arena’s Clubhouse Bar. It starts straight after the exhibition closes at 5pm and all

exhibitors and visitors are warmly invited. We will supply Green hats (of course!), drinks, nibbles and you supply the chat. This follows on from the ‘Oscars of the Industry’, the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony at the Industry Gala Evening hosted by BISHTA and SPATA on Tuesday evening in the Ricoh Arena’s Premier Lounge. For more details and to book your seats (tables of ten available), please contact Jan at the BSPF offices (seats must be purchased in advance, before 10 January 2020). Everyone from the Water Leisure Industry is invited to attend!
RENEWED INDUSTRY ENDORSEMENT Boasting a 24-year heritage, SPATEX 2020 is fortunate to count the Industry’s many esteemed associations amongst its media partners and call upon their expertise. PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) will be holding an all-day seminar on the Thursday of the Show. An impressive roll call of experts will give the latest water treatment advice that is essential for all designers, suppliers, operators and managers of all types of spas and pools, from the smallest to the largest municipal leisure complex. The STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) is holding a Pool Plant Conference on the Tuesday in Seminar Arena 2 from 10.30 to 12.05. This will include an update on safety training awards and pool plant qualifications.
HANDS ON DEMOS There’s nothing like someone showing you how it should be done! Leaks in pools and spas are the bane of a pool builder’s life – so there’s a Leak Detection Masterclass on Tuesday 28 January at 13.30 (Arena 1). Plus there’s a Pump Strip-down Masterclass on Wednesday 29 January at 12 (Arena 1).
NEW! A CASE IN POINT This year we have offered our exhibitors the opportunity to give a 30-minute talk in Arena 2 in which they present a company case study which demonstrates the efficiency of their products out in the field. This idea has been well received by companies such as Aquafinesse, Spa Solutions, Spa Parts Vortex and Dryden Aqua.

STA POOL PLANT – STANDARDS HOME & AWAY
STA And SPATA Join Together To Raise Awareness In this last issue of 2019, Robbie Phillips, STA’s Pool Plant Consultant and Chris Hayes, Managing Director of SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) look at the importance of on site trained personnel and offer advice to holiday pool operators
A
s we come to the end of the year, we are reflecting on what has been another busy 12 months and one where we’ve once again sadly seen several incidents involving unsafe swimming pools, both in the UK and abroad with holidaymakers. With this in mind and with a new year ahead, STA and SPATA have joined together, not only to raise awareness on the importance of on site trained personnel, but also to offer professional support to holiday pool operators and all those responsible for ensuring customer safety here in the UK and abroad. This network of support is vitally important, because in the cases we’ve seen reported in the press this year, which have been mainly caused by suction entrapment, from gas escapes (which have caused fatalities, sickness and psychological traumas) and from diseases caused by infectious agents in the water causing sickness and discomfort, can be prevented. Of note, the reported incidents seen have not only involved individuals supplying accommodation on a private-hire basis, but also popular family hotel complexes booked via large tour operators – proving the dangers and risks are universal.
THE 5 MOST COMMON CAUSES: • Lack of safe design and operation by the installer, operator and maintenance contractor • Lack of professional training provided to ensure safe competent staff and contractors • Insufficient risk and COSHH assessments in place • The mishandling and storage of chemicals • Staff not knowing what to do when something goes wrong.
THE SOLUTION: • Ensure all swimming pool sites (including pool plant areas) are safely designed to protect bathers and facilitate bather loads.
38 December 2019 SPN 38_SPN_December_19_STA.indd 38
• Plant room • Heating and air circulation.
Where chlorine gas escapes to the poolside or an area close to the pool plant room, this is due to mixing of chemicals or inappropriate maintenance by inexperienced and / or untrained persons – as illustrated here showing poor and potentially dangerous storage of chlorine based disinfectant
• Ensure staff, contractors, safety consultants and any other bodies involved in pool maintenance, refurbishment etc., are qualified to ensure the safety of all those in contact with the swimming pool and its environment, for all activities. The industry has guidance on pool design and operation (through BS EN 15288 parts 1 & 2). Anyone involved in the pool industry should be aware of these standards, and should be able to comply with them (and there are the same versions of these standards in other European countries). In March, Right Directions in collaboration with STA and Quest also launched a new Pool Water Management Quality Mark in line with industry best practice. This gives pool operators guidance on how to provide safe, clean and hygienic swimming pool water and how to manage the pool in a responsible, efficient and effective way. The key areas cover: • General management of health and safety • Workforce development • Bather hygiene • Cleaning and housekeeping • Monitoring water quality • Water treatment • Filtration
‘Ignorance is no excuse’ either because there are consultants and other experts that are aware of these standards and other industry guidance that can be called upon for help. They will undertake regular audits and provide risk assessments, so that appropriate action can be taken to minimise the chance of serious incidents occurring. For travel operators who will be working directly or indirectly with multiple holiday resorts all across the world in 2020, this ‘duty of care’ message is particularly pertinent - not only to protect the safety of their customers holidaying in foreign countries, but to protect their own business reputation too. Robbie is STA’s Pool Plant Consultant with over 40 years’ experience in the wet leisure industry. He is considered to be one of the country’s top pool plant experts and has managed many holiday site audits, and dealt with many similar cases as those mentioned here. COMPANY PROFILE
15 Years Of Inspiration At Cranbourne Stone Howard and Jo Standfield established Cranbourne Stone 15 years ago and in a short time have established themselves as specialists in swimming pool surrounds and landscapes with a reputation that precedes them. Here we talk to Jo, the company’s Sales Director about the business and how the industry has changed over the years
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH CRANBOURNE STONE? Howard had worked for his parents’ pool construction business since the age of 16 and I had been working in the swimming pool industry from the age of 18. Having started my career in the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA), I was the lead coordinator for pool builders as well as helping to set up the SPATEX show. Although Howard and I were an item at school, our work worlds collided and we decided to start our own company using our expertise in the pool industry. As a previous pool installer, Howard was frustrated with the lack of decent pool copings available to the market, so when we came across an old friend who was handmaking quality precast concrete coping stones, we saw an opportunity in the market. Using our contacts we marketed our new range of precast copings and the interest was instant. As they say, the rest is history.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE TO THE BUSINESS IN THE LAST 15 YEARS? We have made so many adjustments over the years, but have followed the trends and listened to our customers to ensure we are at the top of our game. One of the most significant changes was our decision to import natural stone from around the world. Another important change to the business was the investment in specialist machinery.
We have made so many adjustments over the years, but have followed the trends and listened to our customers to ensure we are at the top of our game” www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 41_SPN_Dec_19_Cranbourn.indd 41
Since installing our first CNC 5 axis saw 6 years ago, we now have a fully equipped factory to ensure all stone is tailor-made, of the highest standard and fits perfectly with any design.
WHAT VALUES AND WAYS OF WORKING HAVE MADE CRANBOURNE STONE ENJOY THE SUCCESS AND GROWTH THAT IT HAS OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS? Two years after establishing Cranbourne Stone, we had the 2007 recession, which wasn’t a great start for a new business. However, it taught us that you have to work at it, keep your head down and there would be a light at the end of the tunnel. We started from humble beginnings and with hard work, determination and a great team around us we can now look back at what we have created and feel very proud. The support from our customers has also always been phenomenal and we are truly thankful to them. We are proud to say that we are still serving the same customers 15 years on.
YOU SELL A RANGE OF HIGHQUALITY STONE – HAS THE STYLE OR TYPE OF STONE REQUESTED BY CUSTOMERS CHANGED IN THE LAST 15 YEARS? The trend for swimming pool surrounds has changed tenfold. Long gone is the desire
for white precast copings and 2x2 precast paving. End users want as much style in their gardens as they do in their homes. Garden design with the pool coping and matching hard landscaping is now where it is at – whether its natural stone or porcelain, there are so many options available. 2019 has seen a huge trend towards porcelain bonded overlip and the natural stone pencil round top and bottom profile, which works perfectly for those in search of more contemporary-looking pools.
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES CRANBOURNE STONE SO SUCCESSFUL AND STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD? Our knowledge of pool construction and the building industry. There are many stonemasons and merchants selling pool copings, however, they don’t have our knowledge of swimming pool construction. We can discuss projects with all those involved and understand the technicality of each individual project and its component elements. It saves a lot of time and hassle for both the pool installer and the end user if these complex details are organised at the beginning. I would also like to think that it’s our transparency. We are honest people and work alongside our customers, taking their opinions into account. We also understand the needs and urgency of the pool builder in their busiest periods and we do our utmost to keep up with these demands.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR CRANBOURNE STONE? We never stop looking for new products and new challenges, and with our fabulous team working with us, who knows – watch this space! Cranbourne Stone 01264 810813 www.cranbournestone.co.uk

youngest novice. The waterpark attractions include six adrenalin pumping waterslides, a 25m pool, The Reef splash zone, a lazy river and a wave pool that churns out more than 20 million litres of water per day. Specialists Ustigate and Vortex were commissioned to design an inclusive family waterpark attraction that would be accessible to all ages and abilities, and in particular those with physical challenges. An extension to this brief was to respond with a high octane, sensory overload scheme. The concept required bespoke design to fit inside the circular building and around the landing pool for ‘The Cyclone’ waterslide. Works began in 2016 and a design incorporating a wheelchair accessible Elevations™ system and Splashpad® uniquely configured to the waterpark space was approved in 2018. The lazy river was also enhanced with a Vortex Lazy No 8; a beautiful overhead product with rows of colourful swaying flatbed buckets that tilt and release stimulating splashes from above. The products are mainly made from high grade stainless steel and finished with a robust polyester powder coating, thus providing a solid and secure course to follow and a safe and tactile experience for water-players to enjoy. The choice of colours delivers an essence of the outdoors inside, utilising the colours green and brown to create stems from the ground up and grassy graphics on the panels to deliver pastures new. The majority of the products on the Elevations system have been selected from the Vortex Nature Collection, enabling The Wave to erupt with a bloom of tipping and interactive spinning flowers and leafy shapes with water effects of every shape, size and height. The overhead flora features are made from translucent Seeflow™ resulting in a cheerful outburst of yellow, orange and green shadows throughout the environment. The concept at The Wave is a sensational water meadow full of interactive and sensual elements to enlighten and enhance everyone’s experience through sight, sound and touch. On one side of the splash zone small children find comfort and fun in gentle ground sprays and on the other side of the splash zone the 6.29m tall Superwave guarantees every confident water-player the greatest splash of all. The design and build teams have fulfilled every inclusive promise in establishing the best leisure facilities inside one of the most accessible leisure centres in the UK. This remarkable achievement has proven that attention to detail in design leads to higher standards of inclusivity and accessibility that everyone can benefit from in their everyday lives. On 8 October 2019, The Wave was awarded a prestigious Leading Edge Award by the World Waterpark Association, thanks to its state of the art attractions and accessible design. Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport, said: “This is fantastic news for The Wave, for the city and for the people of Coventry. The Wave has already become award-winning before it has even opened its doors!”

Flying The Flag For British-made Products While a lot of products used in the wet leisure sector are produced abroad, there are numerous quality solutions that are made in the UK too – and in addition to helping the wider economy and providing jobs, there are a number of additional benefits to buying British-made goods. In this issue, we take a closer look at those benefits and some of the products within the wellness sector that are flying the flag for UK manufacturing By Jon Wadeson
A
s an industry, wet leisure on the whole tends to rely products which are often imported and that fact becomes even clearer when you focus in on certain sectors, including spas, hot tubs, saunas and steam, or the ‘Wellness’ sector as I like to call it. Now, that’s probably no real surprise given that the UK was relatively late to the whole wellness scene. Hot tubs for example originated in the USA so of course it follows that the sector is dominated by brands from there, or at least from north America, and of course, increasingly from China too. The same is true for many components that are used. Think saunas and it’s a similar story. Finland and the Nordic countries have been enjoying their use for centuries so again it follows that many brands are northern European. But dig a little deeper and you quickly find a number of British companies that have been and still are going about their business and enjoying successes as the wellness sector becomes ever more popular. We’ve all heard the ‘Buy British’ mantra – but why exactly? What are the benefits? Well there are many reasons to do so and the obvious one is that it helps to keep British people employed meaning that the economy benefits from money being paid to local people who then are likely to spend most of their income in Britain. There are ‘green’ reasons too. With local manufacturing there should be a much lower

Another reason is that British manufacturing genuinely is amongst the best in the world, resulting in quality Rotospa offer fast fulfilment products, time after of orders, UK based service teams and free UK factory time. The younger demographic however who may be unable to buy their first property due to financial constraints and forced to rent can consider purchasing a spa due to Rotospas portability, when they move, they can easily take the spa with them, it’s their forever spa. With fast fulfilment of orders, UK based service teams and free UK factory training to all partners, retailers can complement existing strong hot tub brands with complete confidence. The company understands that the sale of high-ticket items such as hot tubs is challenging enough without factoring in lead times in excess of 10 weeks. Rotospa’s lead time from point of order through to delivery is just 2 weeks allowing their partners to be reactive to demand. The company stands by its products and honours UK wide service and a warranty which again is reactive to the needs of customers. As the majority of GMT’s pools are bespoke, they are able to work with architects, designers and clients on a personal level enabling the company to make adjustments or changes if required with the minimum of fuss and with no language barriers to overcome or any foreign call centres to deal with. Lead times are shorter than buying from aboard as the company has shorter distances to travel when delivering the product and there are no hold ups at customs. Being UK-based also means that customers can easily visit the factory to discuss or inspect goods – no passport required! In the unlikely event that that there is a problem with a product, GMT can send someone out to assess any issue and remedy the matter in a timely fashion. The company
Birmingham-based E J Bowman have spent the last 100 years on perfecting heat transfer technology and their products can be found behind the scenes in the wellness sector, especially within commercial holiday parks. With hot tubs having become the ‘must have’ guest attraction, the use has created a number of challenges to park operators and they do have a downside during guest change over periods. Staff have only a few hours to drain, clean, refill and heat the tubs prior to new guests arriving. And after tiring hours travelling to their destination, the first thing guests want to do is jump into their luxurious hot tub! The problem is that most hot tubs use electric heaters that only heat water between 1°C and 2°C per hour. So even when prefilled with 30°C water, it could still take around four hours or more to have them ready for guests. An alternative solution comes from Bowman, who have developed a heat exchanger for hot tubs. It enables the tub to be heated from an external boiler, such as gas, LPG or hybrid air source. This compact, powerful unit can heat water by around 10°C per hour, enabling a 1,400 litre hot tub using preheated 25°C water to be heated and operational in about one hour. Using Birmingham-based E J Bowman have spent the last 100 years on perfecting heat transfer technology

Holiday parks are already discovering the benefits of Bowman heat exchangers, as in addition to reduced heat up times, energy costs can be significantly reduced – electricity being an extremely expensive form of heating. One customer, heating 24 hot tubs at their woodland lodges, claim savings of £12,000 per year by switching to Bowman units for their tubs!
THERMALEC COMBINE CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS Thermalec Products Ltd first came to life at the end of 1966 operating from a double ended mobile home in the garden of the founder Gerry Williams. The company moved to the West Country in 1978 and continued to grow from strength to strength building swimming pool heaters for the industry around the world. During the summer of 1999 Thermalec became part of the Meddings Group of Companies and the majority of staff transferred to the new site at Ivybridge, thus giving continuity of standards and service that the company are known for. The latest product to be manufactured in their Devon factory is an all new in-line heater suitable for spas and small pools. Built in the UK with the exacting standards expected from Thermalec®, this new range brings a cost-effective solution to heating requirements. Chlorogene T25 – a relatively new innovation having been introduced in 2018. The product offers the park and leisure operators a complete Chlorine Dioxide solution to biofilm removal and eradication of pathogens when draining hot tubs, spas and treating swimming pool balance tank environments; even the ‘cleanest’ environment has met with startling results when Chlorogene T25 is employed. Using Chlorogene T25 tablets as part of a regular maintenance and water management programme couldn’t be more simple. The easy to use tablet format allows you to add the correct dose of Chlorogene T25 to the filter compartment (chemical feeders removed). On contact the tablet starts working straight away, eradicating harmful pathogens, even cleaning in situ cartridge filters. Chlorogene T25 improves on-site water management, reduces the risk to business and offers a robust solution to biofilm removal; ideal for use prior to draining water.

British manufactured and supported with technical back up plus off the shelf spares and units, the product offers a great package of reliable operation, efficient and professional support with ex stock supply of equipment. Steam baths are a critical application, as customer experience will be very negatively affected in clubs, hotels or spas if the generators are not working effectively. Downtime must be kept to a minimum so the reliability of Vapac’s range, together with availability of stock and spares, takes a lot of the stress out of providing maintenance to these systems. Steam room manufacturers need to know that his support is available down the line, maintenance contractors demand it to allow them to offer the service promised, and the end user businesses need to have their system operating efficiently. It is therefore essential to have a supplier with consistency of supply and technical advice over the phone or on site, as part of a Humidity Solutions Ltd is the exclusive UK distributor for the British-manufactured steam humidifier from Vapac

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS
Controlled Water Management That Goes With The Flow Reliable, essential and increasingly high tech, dosing pumps and control systems are the unsung heroes in any water treatment system as they quietly go about the business of delivering regular and accurate amounts of chemicals into pool and spa water. Convenient and easy to use, the automation they provide has made the life of owners and operators that much simpler and we round up what’s available By Karen Witney
S
ystems that expertly control water treatment are a must in today’s commercial market and are also sought after in ever increasing numbers in the growing and demanding consumer market place too. So what are the benefits of automatic control? Well the biggest has to be safety. To have equipment installed in the plant room that recognises, reacts and then treats frequently changing bather loads and ensures that bathers are protected from horrors such as cryptosporidium or giardia is quite frankly priceless. Perfectly regulated pool water is a shield to any potential nasties and also ensures swimmers' skin and eyes are not irritated by spent chlorine or water that has an out of balance pH. In a nutshell the guesswork is taken out of water treatment allowing owners and operators to spend less time testing and guessing and enabling them to pass the responsibility over to the mechanical marvels that efficiently take control.

CERTIKIN’S CERTIDOS SYSTEM PACKAGES ARE COMPLETE SOLUTIONS As part of Certikin, one of the market leaders, CertiDos can offer a complete solutions for all aspects of chemical dosing. System packages are available which include the DomTrik, a budget domestic offering. The system monitors and controls pH via an inline pH probe and trickle feeds a manually calculated and inputted quantity of liquid sanitiser in the pool or spa over a 24-hour period. All components required are included as well as PPE and a basic water testing kit. It is estimated to take a pool engineer around an hour to install. It doesn’t stop there though. CertiDos can deliver heavy commercial solutions with an emphasis on health and safety and adherence to industry guidelines. Certainly, for this type of application, the CertiDos team views remote connectivity as a must. It doesn’t cost the earth and can provide valuable real time information and alarms to any web enabled device. Data is also logged, providing records that can go back three years and beyond.
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 51-54_SPN_Dec_2019_Dosing_Pumps.indd 53
Multiple pools and spas and even multiple sites can be linked to one account. The CertiDos team finds that when remote connectivity is explained to commercial operators, their eyes light up and the response is usually “I need this!”. It’s time for pool and spa professionals to take dosing seriously. To understand the equipment, how it works and how they should be interacting with it. At the very least, ask the CertiDos team about remote connectivity. Not only can it provide information which can help resolve issues, when it comes to submitting an invoice to an end client for a call out, it can also help pool engineers to highlight how the operator may have contributed to the issue so there is no retrospective debate regarding who is footing the bill!
GAFFEY’S VERSATILE WATER CONTROL FOR POOL APPLICATIONS Reliability and cutting-edge technology are essential requirements for any pool control system, and they are the hallmarks of the chloriDES® compact control system from Gaffey Technical Services. COMPLETE POOL CONTROLS OFFER AUTOMATIC CONTROL IN A HEARTBEAT The chemical treatment of any pool or spa water is best automated for both disinfectant and pH control and is essentially based around a predetermined set of values. Ideally any system should be able to optimise the treatment process, so that dealing quickly and efficiently with any variations in bathing load or activity is not a problem. Users, operators and owners of these facilities expect to have and swim in the highest possible quality water, to help deliver the best possible experience and minimise any risk of illnesses or infection and having a well-functioning system ensures this. In the hi-tech world that we are all now working in there is a growing need for the ability to remotely monitor dosing systems remotely from the comfort of an office, reception desk or centrally located headquarters and this can be achieved with the WDT CPR Touch system from CPC. Designed by Werner Dosiertechnik in Germany, many years of experience and knowledge have been put into this ‘top of the class’ system.
The CPR Touch has been developed especially for both commercial and residential pools and spas. Delivering consistent, robust performance, this measurement system guarantees reliable control of the necessary parameters to help deliver the best possible bathing conditions. Including a simple and intuitive 7” touch-screen graphical display, any operator will find monitoring and controlling the many parameters easy to understand and operate. The addition of clear user icons and the benefit of up to 1,000 days data logging (historical pool values and out of specification events) make this a great choice for any demanding pool environment.

Filtration Solutions For Installations Big And Small Some of the most important products that lie at the centre of any modern and efficient water cleansing system are those associated with filtration. What was for a while a fairly uninspiring sector has seen a number of innovations over recent years and filtration products, in their many guises, are now viewed as essential for providing effective water management and cost savings. This issue, we showcase just some of the available filtration solutions By Jon Wadeson

hen it comes to options for the filtration of water in pools and spas, there really is a wide range of choices available both in terms of filters and filter media. And I guess that shouldn’t come as any real surprise as the variety of environments that filtration has to operate in is vast. But whether it’s for a grand Olympic sized swimming pool or a modest two-seater hot tub, the need and importance is the same for both owners and users alike, albeit on somewhat different scales! Normally hidden away behind the scenes, and often viewed as somewhat low tech or uninspiring, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of recent innovations and improved solutions are now on offer for what is without doubt, a critical part of any pool and spa set up. As a result of the advances made, some products have become more user-friendly, others more flexible in their use, and some are flexing their green credentials by helping to reduce the amount of water used too. All of these factors lead directly or indirectly to lower operating costs – so the developments are very much welcomed. With plenty of options already available, combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer, so this issue we highlight just some of the latest filtration options.
TPF’S CERAMIFLO MEMBRANES PROVIDE ULTRAFILTRATION Danish company Liqtech have provided membrane filtration technology to a multitude of industries for many years and more recently they have pioneered a pool filtration system. Recognising the potential for microfiltration, Total Pool Filtration (TPF) established an agreement with Liqtech to develop the UK market under brand name Ceramiflo. A three-year period of research and development has allowed TPF to make some improvements to the operation and the maintenance of the Danish system and fully

automated membrane cleaning has been integrated into their package. Ceramiflo membranes have a 3mu pour size which consistently filters out 85% of all 2-3mu particulates. This is an extremely robust strategy in the removal of crypto sized particulates which are understood to be 4-6mu in size. The membranes are made of silicon carbide which is extremely durable and resistant to degradation. This compares very favourable against traditional filters which require costly media changes and refurbishments. There are currently two Ceramiflo systems installed in the UK and a six-membrane system is due to be installed in Trafford this autumn. The systems are entirely automatic and are monitored over the internet as part of the Ceramiflo service contract. Staff intervention is now simplified with no need to operate and backwash their filters. Ceramiflo is very compact so when old plant is due for replacement, they can often slot into the plant room with the original filters remaining. Furthermore, they are often installed seamlessly with no interruption or disruption to bathing. As a smart choice for pool operators there are some big gains to be had in terms of sustainability. Ceramiflo removes more dirt from the pool and that dirt is frequently removed from the membranes, leading to a drop in chlorine usage. Finally, since the membranes are cleaned mainly with air, backwash water usage is reduced by up to 60%.

INTRODUCING THE NORSUP SUPRA AND DUPLEX SAND FILTERS Trends in filtration differ from country to country which is why Norsup, the exclusive installer brand available through Bosta UK, looks at the best that Europe has available. Bosta look to offer the best possible solutions for sand and glass media filters with added service and maintenance features to benefit the installer. The Norsup Duplex side mount filter has taken inspiration from the large German pool market. Two-piece sand filters are the most popular type of filter in Germany as they offer the easiest maintenance for sand changes of any filter. Manufactured in high quality fibreglass reinforced polyester with Praher 6-way valve, Norsup offer a very strong and reliable filter, so strong in fact that Bosta offer a ten year warranty on the tank and five years on the multiport valve. From 18” to 26” diameter the Duplex filter can be used in all domestic pool installations. Secondly, Bosta have the Norsup Supra side mount filter. Discerning customers now look for exceptional design as well as reliability, and the Supra filter manages both. The fibreglass reinforced polyester tank has been given an additional weatherproof gelcoated finish to improve the look of the filter. The large 400mm service opening at the top is also a significant design feature. Strength and access are achieved with this unique lid that assists engineers when servicing the filter annually. These filters range from 20” up to 30” for all types of domestic pool. Both the Norsup Duplex and Supra sand filters are part of a coordinated plant room design that sets this range apart from ordinary pool equipment, heightening the exclusive look of any plant room.

FILTRATION Magnum Filters say that recently cartridge filtration for pools has become more common, with one of the main reasons being water conservation
MAGNUM CARTRIDGE FILTERS BENEFIT BOTH SPAS AND POOLS When it comes to choosing a filter, Peter Hogg, owner of Spaeuro which supplies the UK and European market with Magnum cartridge filters said: “Over the years I have heard many arguments for and against using cartridge filters for swimming pool filtration and which is the best filtering media to use in a cartridge. “Recently cartridge filtration for swimming pools has become more and more common especially in the USA and Australia. One of the main reasons is water conservation. Cartridges cannot be backwashed and have to be cleaned with a hose which takes far less water than the normal backwash.” A standard Magnum Filter cartridge, which uses Reemay fabric for its filtering media, has a nominal micron rating around 30 microns. However, after the cartridge has collected dirt and debris, a dirt cake forms on the outside of the fabric. This dirt cake can then become a further filtering mechanism which results in finer filtration.
It is conceivable that the micron rating can go down to as low as 3-5 microns. With the added advantage of having a large surface area you end up with a very efficient filter unit which maintains adequate flow that requires very little maintenance. However, there is an optimum surface area on any given size of cartridge where filtration is at its most efficient and it’s worth noting that some cartridge manufacturers push the boundaries and in doing so, have to add too many pleats, resulting in them being crammed together, so much so that the dirt and debris will not travel down the full depth of the pleat. This means that only a very small portion of the cartridge is filtering and premature blockage is inevitable. Something that’s never the case with Magnum’s products.
GOLDEN COAST AIM TO FILTER OUT THE COMPETITION For domestic pool filtration, owners need look no further than the Waterco Micron Bobbin Wound Filter range – available from wet
leisure supplier Golden Coast. Micron Bobbin Wound Filters feature a unique fishtail lateral configuration that eliminates the ineffective ‘dead areas’ commonly associated with traditional star designs. The system maximises hydraulic performance and water flow distribution through the filter bed, ultimately reducing the amount of water used during backwash by up to 30% – saving the customer time and money. An Australian company with a strong international presence, Waterco is known for its innovative approach, superior filtration products and high manufacturing standards. The filters are built using digitally operated machines that wind continuous strands of fibreglass into a seamless one-piece vessel, while strict quality control procedures monitor the structural integrity throughout production. “Micron Bobbin Wound Filters represent high quality and reliability,” said Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast. “The fact that each filter is built as one vessel means there are no welds that might corrode over time and cause operational issues. CASE STUDY OC-1 MAKES CAMBRIDGESHIRE POOL PICTURE PERFECT! When Cambridgeshire resident Gareth Gibbs decided on a new pool for family use, he turned to local pool builders Aqualeaf who completed the 9.5m x 4.5m x 1.4m deep liner pool in just seven weeks. Aqualeaf are loyal customers of Certikin and at the start of each project they turn to the UK’s number one supplier and manufacturer of wet leisure equipment with a shopping list of products. The pool features Certikin’s ground-breaking OC-1 filtration media. The British manufactured OC-1 media is tearing up the textbook on traditional methods of entrapment filtration. OC-1 works through settlement and cleverly harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers to make massive energy savings. Using OC-1 media also reduces the head loss in the filtration system as it has more than 20 times the capacity to retain debris. This means that the designed flow rate is maintained even when the filter becomes dirty. Maintenance costs are also reduced as less backwashing is required, wasting less heated and treated water. All this whilst maintaining filtration performance standards. Two filters, specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 media for both domestic and commercial installations, are now available. The Commercial version can be supplied complete with the OC-1 media already preloaded and allows quicker installation

WHEN THERE’S LIMITED SPACE, WATERCO HAS A SOLUTION! Sometimes plant rooms are just not designed with changing a large commercial filter in mind, but the fact remains that sometimes filters need replacing leaving the installer or specifier to figure out how to get large plant equipment through restricted access and narrow corridors or doors. Waterco have come up with the ideal solution to these kinds of problems – the Waterco Split-Tank filter. Designed for water treatment and commercial swimming pool facilities, the split-tank commercial filters are ideal for retrofitting where access or plant room space may be restricted. Delivered in two halves they can be easily assembled once in a plant room and are manufactured using the latest in gel coated fibreglass technology to give high quality finish and performance. Hydron Split-Tank filters features Waterco’s ‘fish bones’ lateral system, which improves water flow distribution through the filter bed. Conventional laterals are not suitable for larger size commercial filters. ‘Dead legs’ exist between the laterals, and the water flow is not optimised through the filter bed. Conversely, Waterco’s ‘fish bones’ lateral configuration eliminates any dead legs and provides an optimised flow throughout the lateral underdrain. Other benefits include: • Easy to ship and install • Virtually free of maintenance or repairs compared to steel alternatives • Suitable for both new and existing installations • Ten-year product warranty (five years full, five years pro rata)

SANISTREAM® TAKES THE MARKET BY STORM Since its launch at SPATEX 2019, Darlly Europe’s SaniStream® Direct Line Filtration system, the combined hot tub filtration and sanitisation system, has taken the market by storm. The system comprises an adjustable in-line bromine or chlorine feeder, the SpaPod®, which fits into a redesigned and exclusively adapted high quality Darlly filter to form a complete integrated hot tub filtration and disinfectant dosing solution in one. The SaniStream® system gives consumers the benefits of a highly effective adjustable sanitiser feeder which, unlike a floating dispenser, does not need to be removed from the spa when bathers are using it. However, the greatest impact made by the product has undoubtedly been in the holiday let sector. When the HSG282 regulations were introduced, thousands of spas already installed and in use out in the field in holiday parks, lodges, caravans and cottages became non-compliant overnight. This is because Section 76 of HSG282 stated that hot tubs used… as part of a business activity must be disinfected using bromine or chlorine through the use of an inline disinfectant feeder”. The SaniStream® system solves this problem by combining an inline disinfectant feeder with

FIBALON FROM FAIRLOCKS – A NEW KIND OF FILTER MEDIA Fibalon Pool Filter Media offers an optimised, innovative and patented filter media which consists of a combination of different polymer fibres with diverse surface structures and special fibre cross sections. A deliberately chosen spherical shape maximises the filter media surface area, and the interior of the fibre ball consists of a slightly denser core and a softer wrap. The balls nestle together from a consistent filter bed. Fibalon has a number of benefits including: • Ease of handling – 350g of Fibalon replaces the equivalent 25kg of filter sand • A high dirt capacity • A high selectivity of 8 microns
as part of the service contract. The hotel staff no longer have to carry out backwashes as the filters are cleaned automatically. Most of the cleaning of the filters is carried out by air so the filters have saved two thirds of the previous water consumption with no extra increase in TDS. “The Ceramiflo filtration system is a breath of fresh air compared to traditional systems. Its three main benefits for me are the water and energy saving it gives us which helps to reduce our carbon footprint, its reduction in labour hours that are normally required for backwashing and maintenance etc. and the water quality is second to none – crystal clear,” Steve Hinton, Leisure Manager at Alvaston Hall Hotel and Spa.
Normally hidden away behind the scenes, and often viewed as somewhat low tech or uninspiring, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of recent innovations” • Maintenance free and reuseable • Inhibits biofilm formation. There are three options of media type depending on the location and size of the pool or spa. Aimed at pool owners, Fibalon 3D offers a complete alternative to traditional sand filters, offers energy-savings and can be applied universally. Fibalon Rope is suitable for almost all common pool filters and utilises the innovative polymer fibre. However, handling and use is made even easier through the use of eight nets arranged like a convenient rope. Fibalon Compact is more suitable for hot
tubs, whirlpools and spas where the filtration requirement is less. The material is contained in an easy to insert mesh bag and it offers a longer, more sustainable life when compared to other, more traditional cartridge filters.

WANT TO UPGRADE YOUR FILTRATION AND DON’T HAVE THE ROOM? Ceramiflo offer a compact solution that can fit into any plant room Takes up just 1/3 of the floor space normally required by sand filters Fully automatic system provides superior quality pool water ALVASTON HALL HOTEL & SPA Space was very limited in their small plant room and the high rate filters needed to be replaced. Ceramiflo was selected as the perfect solution. “The ceramic filtration system is a breath of fresh air compared to traditional systems. Its 3 main benefits for me are the energy saving it gives us which helps to reduce our carbon footprint which is a big area of focus for Warner Leisure, its reduction in labour hours that are normally required with the backwashing and maintenance etc, and the water quality is second to none – crystal clear.” Steve Hinton Leisure Manager, Alvaston Hall

Each year, EUSA holds an awards event to celebrate the tremendous work of their Association members. The European Pool and Spa Awards are held annually at a different pool and spa exhibition across Europe, and the 2019 event is the seventh time the event has been held with aquanale in Cologne, Germany providing the venue on Thursday 7 November. In the 2019 competition, 186 pools from ten countries participated (Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK). Judges from eight countries awarded points for each project. The special thing about the EUSA Awards is it is a competition in which “the best of the best” are chosen, because usually, the national associations submit entries to EUSA shortlisted from their national award winners. EUSA President Mille Örnmark from the Swedish Swimming Federation Svenska Badbranschen (SBB) moderated the award ceremony, where 21 winners were announced in seven award categories to represent the spectrum of work undertaken by the members of each of the ten participating European National Pool and Spa Associations. EUSA represents approximately 2,500 companies from all areas of the supply chain, adding value to swimming pool and spa businesses. It represents artisans, wholesalers and manufacturers and the industry of the swimming pool and spa businesses across Europe. The EUSA Awards were judged by top industry professionals from across Europe. Judges assessed the entries on their visual impact, innovation and aesthetic appeal. The identity of each entry was not given to
the judges; this meant that judges could vote for any entry that they believed to be the best. The EUSA judges aimed to award a Gold, Silver and Bronze award winner in each category, subject to there being sufficient entries, of suitable quality.
REPRESENTING THE UK The BSPF congratulated all of this years award winners both at home and abroad. Chris Hayes, BSPF Managing Director commented: “The BSPF is proud to celebrate the success of the BISHTA and SPATA members who won awards in this year’s EUSA Awards. Competitions such as this, and the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, hosted by BISHTA and SPATA, give the British Water Leisure Industry a platform from which to amplify our message nationwide promoting the high standards and exceptional quality of work being produced by BISHTA and SPATA members across the UK.” Looking forward to 2020, the message is clear in providing water leisure companies across Europe with a reason to celebrate their achievements and the opportunity to promote pool and spa equipment as an exciting and inspiring lifestyle choice for consumers to spend their leisure time on.
The BSPF is proud to celebrate the success of the BISHTA and SPATA members who won awards in this year’s EUSA Awards”

OPINION
There’s No Such Thing As ‘Free’!
“It’s a free world, so please feel free to disagree with my opinion, you have freedom of speech after all, but I do think that we use the word ‘free’ rather more liberally than perhaps we should,” says Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast
I
f the phrase ‘The Free World’ resonates with you the way it does with me then, like me, you probably grew up during the 60s and 70s. The Free World was the propaganda riposte to the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. It was the opposite of communism, the antithesis of dictatorship. The Free World was the system that opposed state control. With the boundless enthusiasm of the time, the US government put a lot of effort into convincing us that The Free World was where we wanted to live. And they succeeded, perhaps a little too well. People took up the idea of freedom and ran with it. In almost exactly 100 years the idea of freedom went from the emancipation of the slaves to a summer of free love, to the band that gave us ‘All Right Now’ and Peter Fonda declaring that ‘We wanna be free! We wanna be free to do what we wanna do’. ‘Free’ had become one of the most powerful words on the planet and the marketing industry weren’t slow in noticing that.
‘FREE WITH EVERY…’ From the free gift in every pack to the wonderfully named BOGOF, the popularity of ‘free’ has been irresistible to, weirdly, people who are trying to sell you stuff. Of course, what they mean by ‘free’ isn’t actually the same as how you and I understand the word. It might mean that they have reduced their profit margin a little in the case of buy one, get one free. It might mean that the cost has been transferred to some other point in the transaction or, increasingly, it might mean that the seller is going to get something he regards as being more valuable from you than a few quid; they are getting your name, address and contact details. Sign up for a free offer and you’ve made someone’s marketing day. Once you’ve clicked the button and bought
– either one way or the other – that would be laughable if it wasn’t so divisive. The free press seem to have decided that the only way they can keep their shareholders and their owners happy is to abandon the search for the truth that made their freedoms so worth protecting in the first place. It isn’t a freedom when it’s abused.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
whatever it was that you wanted to buy you will be expecting…
…FREE DELIVERY Offering free delivery almost brought the UK’s biggest supermarkets to their knees because, obviously, delivery is not free, it is expensive. Most of them now offer a delivery pass on orders of a certain size and perhaps at restricted times but a lot of other online retailers still offer free delivery, and even free returns. One of the big costs entailed in that system is the carbon footprint of hundreds of thousands of brown cardboard boxes containing unwanted shopping being driven up and down our roads. That’s not my idea of ‘free’.
FREEDOM OF THE PRESS This used to be important, and it still is; just for different reasons. A free press was one of the cornerstones of the Free World; it was something we had that ‘they’ didn’t. It meant that journalists could report on the facts without fear of persecution, it meant that corruption could be uncovered and the truth be told. Phone tapping, celebrity stalking, private email publishing and a level of political bias
From the free gift in every pack to the wonderfully named BOGOF, the popularity of ‘free’ has been irresistible to, weirdly, people who are trying to sell you stuff” 72 December 2019 SPN 76_SPN_December_19_Opinion.indd 72
Social media, more that anything else, has amplified everyone’s voice. It has also amplified the outrage that people’s words and opinions can spark. ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,’ is a famous quote from the 1900s that was often used to describe the principle of freedom of speech. Does it describe how people think and behave today? No? Then perhaps, for many reasons, free speech is no longer the right that we often assume it is.
CALORIE FREE AND ALCOHOL FREE The thing I often wonder when I see that something has been taken out of a kilo of this or a litre of that is, what has been put in its place? ‘Calories replaced with sweeteners’, might be more accurate. ‘Alcohol replaced with...?’ (I have no idea.) The word ‘free’ means a lot of things these days, but seldom does it seem to mean what it says. Perhaps it’s enjoying freedom of speech or freedom of the price?
FREE CHLORINE? I felt that there should be some specific relevance to pools and spas in this article and this was the one that came to mind. The levels of free chlorine in either pool or spa water are now much easier to monitor and control with the advent of automatic dosing. That’s good to know, isn’t it? And if you want to know more, feel free to get in touch! Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
