After a long 12 months, (which actually, has at times, really flown by), we’ve finally made it to December and that means our last issue of what’s been another thoroughly challenging and trying year. And typically, just as some sense of business normality started to work its way back in with the return of industry exhibitions, shows and other regular pre-pandemic activities, Omicron decided to announce itself as this year’s potential Christmas Grinch, with government reacting instantly. Great. Of course, it’s far too early to say, but hopefully the appearance of this latest COVID-19 variant spells the real beginning of the end of this pandemic – and only time will tell – but talk about poor timing or what. Its appearance is a real party-pooper if ever there was one! Moving away from what I guess is just another dip in the rollercoaster ride that is the COVID-19 pandemic, and focusing on this issue, inside, you’ll find our annual look at dosing pumps and control systems, products which quietly go about their business behind the scenes as they play their own, crucial part in an efficient water treatment system, and by doing so, help to make the lives of pool and spa owners that little bit easier. Other products which are also nearly always hidden away from view are those that deal with the filtration of pool and spa water, and we’ve a feature which explores the latest innovations which are leading to improved performance and a reduction in the use of water usage and costs.
As if that wasn’t enough, we have a piece on manufacturer and distributor Plastica, a very useful Q&A from Chester-based GMT Spas International, plus a Project Showcase which focuses on the aquatic play side of Craigavon’s South Lake Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland. Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams reflects on a year of ups and downs whilst Luke Griffiths from the STA highlights why pH is the most important parameter in wet leisure water. As always, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So, with everything covered, that’s this issue’s round up complete – I trust there’s something of interest for all of SPN’s readers. After such a challenging year, and with last year’s Christmas effectively cancelled for many, hopefully there will be time for all to chill out, catch up with friends and family and to finally appreciate the seasonal festivities… whilst of course, enjoying this latest issue! Have a great Christmas break – we’ve all deserved it – and see you in 2022, which will hopefully be the year in which we see the end of the pandemic and a return to some kind of normality!

Certikin Is The Perfect Fit For Retirement Village Pool In Hampshire The engine room of this striking pool and fitness suite – designed and built by Warwickshire-based Buckingham Pools for a luxury retirement development in Romsey, Hampshire – proudly boasts the Certikin name. The health and wellness complex is built with versatility and functionality in mind to provide the residents with a relaxing facility in which to unwind. In constant use, the pool features a Fluvo Rondo counter-current unit supplied by Certikin. The unit comes with separate rotary buttons to provide the desired setting for air and water adjustment. Certikin also supplied the complete filtration system – two SLX filters and three Hydrostar circulation pumps providing a turnover of less than three hours to optimise the usability. Alongside the pumps, Certikin has also supplied three inverters to make them variable speed. Easy to install and programme, these inverters offer a potential cost saving payback of less than six months. The pool, measuring 12m x 6m, is meticulously finished with large-format, marble effect tiles. With the perfectly edged built-in step-entry, the interior finish completes an elegant look with the stylish surrounding décor and marble feature walls to contrast with the exposed walnut wood-effect floor tiles. The underwater lighting installations enhance the relaxing ambience to offer daylong activity, whether swimming or lounging.

Save Water At Your Leisure With Deer Technology
Saving water is a challenge for most businesses but when you run a leisure centre containing a 25-metre swimming pool, children’s pool, gyms and a sports hall with shower facilities, the challenge can seem mighty. For Stretford Sports Village, operated by Trafford Leisure Community Interest Company Ltd (Trafford Leisure), careful monitoring of water usage is vital to help keep membership fees and prices as low as possible. In addition, sustainability and environmental consciousness are additional goals today of course. Trafford Leisure needed to obtain regular, reliable data to fully understand their consumption patterns and cost. Unfortunately, the location of the water meter, deep inside a manhole on another business’ property which is frequently flooded, meant the water retailer was unable to fulfil this need with regular manual readings. To take control of the situation, Trafford Leisure turned to Deer Technology.
6 December 2021 SPN 6+9+11_SPN_December_2021_News_General.indd 6
The LimpetReader was developed to be installed quickly without interrupting the supply and with minimal ongoing costs. The product attaches to the faceplate of the existing meter and incorporates multiple miniature cameras that capture the entire meter register display at time intervals specified by the customer. The images are then automatically and securely sent to the Deer Technology’s server where the images are converted into a date and time stamped data value. Trafford Leisure is then able to import the data into the proprietary systems for analysis, allowing trends to be identified and inaccurate estimated bills to be disputed. As well as making sure billing is correct, regular readings can also help identify leaks with unexpected rises in consumption meaning costly leaks can be rectified quickly. Glass Pearls Media is manufactured from 100% pure glass and offers a finer filtration than conventional filter media. It has been evaluated by TUV SUD PSB and is suitable for both domestic and commercial swimming pools, aquaculture, water treatment and industrial applications. Whereas other filter media may contain a variety of contaminants, Glass Pearls are chemically inert for superior purity. In fact, Glass Pearls have been independently lab tested for leaching contaminants and found to be well within drinking water guidelines*.
SUPERIOR PURITY Their superior purity greatly reduces its initial backwashing requirements, prior to commissioning a filter, enabling a rapid start-up of media filters. SAFE TO USE Glass Pearls are safe to handle & safe to service. They are spherical and do not have sharp edges, making them safe to use. And if there’s ever a failure of the filter’s laterals and Glass Pearls flow into the swimming pool, they pose no risk of injury to swimmers.

It will take over the operation of the Phoenix Pool from 15 January 2022, replacing current operators Sentinel Leisure Trust, and will manage the new Marina Centre from its opening, expected to be in late July next year. Council leader Cllr Carl Smith said: “Freedom Leisure impressed us with its proven track record in over 100 sports and leisure complexes around the UK, and a supportive approach to running community facilities like the Phoenix. “The council is making a significant long-term investment in the new Marina Centre and we look forward to working with Freedom to make it a success for the whole borough.” Freedom Leisure Chief Executive Ivan Horsfall Turner said: “We are delighted and excited to be working in partnership with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, to both develop and improve the Phoenix Pool & Gym and to launch the new Marina Centre.”
Council Appoints Operator For Great Yarmouth’s Leisure Facilities
Great Yarmouth Borough Council has appointed Freedom Leisure to operate Great Yarmouth’s new £26m Marina Centre and its existing Phoenix Pool and Gym in Bradwell. Freedom Leisure is one of the largest not-forprofit leisure trusts in the UK managing accessible, value for money, community-led leisure and cultural venues nationwide. It runs over 100 centres across England and Wales with a vision of ‘improving lives through leisure’. Freedom Leisure will be contracted for a ten-
Premium Filtration For A First Class Fitness Destination David Lloyd Leisure (DLL) is a leading multinational sports, health, and leisure group, with 122 clubs. The company’s Southampton-based West End facility provides high-end, family-orientated amenities including a fully tiled 220m3 outdoor swimming pool and 9m3 therapeutic spa. Disinfection is critical in all wet leisure environments, but especially in commercial facilities of this nature with high bather loads. To ensure high quality pool and spa water for members, DLL West End asked Adam Tredwell at Tad Worx and Steve Martin at Paramount Pool Products to supply and install Waterco’s MultiCyclone filters and Glass Pearl filter media. This choice was determined after extensive market research confirmed this system not only produced crystal clear water, but also had Climate Care Certification credentials. Since the installation, DLL’s operational staff has seen noticeable benefits. “The Glass Pearls have made such a difference
to the clarity of the water,” said DLL General Manager Sarah Morgan. “Not only has this been recognised by our staff, but we have also received a number of comments from our swimming members on the superb clarity – they have never seen it as good!” To achieve the centre’s operational and environmental objectives, the following upgrades were made: “Not only is the clarity of the pool and spa water so much better but maintenance time has been reduced significantly by eliminating the need for lengthy backwashing times,” explained DLL plant room operative Andy Tucker. “This saves time and reduces the amount of water lost through the backwashing process. We really have seen an incredible difference.” Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu
Waterco Europe recently took part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The Kent-based team heroically munched their way through Lemon Drizzle Cake, Carrot Cake, Rocky Road and Blueberry Muffins and raised a magnificent £200.50 for this important cause. Every penny raised went to help people living with cancer, a disease that sadly affects 1 in 2 people in their lifetime.

IN BRIEF LISTING PROVIDES REPRIEVE FOR SWINDON’S OASIS LEISURE CENTRE The 45-metre swimming pool dome at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon has been listed at Grade II by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on Historic England’s advice. Opened in 1976, the Oasis Leisure Centre’s pool is the best and earliest example of the newly developed building type, which went on to gain huge popularity in the 1970s and ’80s, marking the cultural shift from swimming for fitness to swimming for fun. Most of the early examples of these buildings have now been lost to redevelopment. The Oasis Leisure Centre closed in November 2020, after GLL surrendered their lease of the building. Since its closure the building has sat in an idle limbo with a campaign group fighting hard to secure the iconic venue’s future.
QUEUES FORM FOR NORFOLK’S NEWEST LEISURE CENTRE POOL Members of the public braved a cold and rainy morning at the end of November to stand in a queue so they could be among the first to try the new facilities at north Norfolk’s newest leisure centre. The Reef in Sheringham opened its doors in a ‘soft launch’ event ahead of a grand opening planned for the new year. The new centre includes a 25m main pool, 13m learner pool and other fitness facilities. The pool has a ‘Poolpod’ so wheelchair users can easily get in and out, and the centre also has accessible, Changing Places bathrooms. The centre is being managed by Everyone’s Active, which also runs north Norfolk’s district councilowned sports and leisure centres in Fakenham and North Walsham.

Location For Second UK Wellbeing Destination Revealed By Therme Group At the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow recently, Therme Group, a global developer and operator of state-of-the-art wellbeing destinations, signed heads of terms with Peel L&P for the location of its second UK project. On a waterfront site in central Glasgow, the project will be constructed on the Peel L&P 21.5-acre site adjacent to the Riverside Museum, at the intersection of the Kelvin and Clyde rivers. Therme is aiming to submit a planning application for Therme Scotland to Glasgow City Council in 2022. Therme Scotland is expected to be around 320,000 sq ft in size and to cost around £100m to build. It will include a next-generation indoor water park, extensive thermal pools and spa, and a health and wellbeing centre. Additional elements of the project also include a vertical farm, which will enable sustainable and locally grown, nutrient-rich fresh produce. The inherent link between sustainability and wellbeing are at the heart of Therme, who work to enhance urban environments and deliver long term
population health benefits. At Therme Scotland, in addition to the vertical farm and botanical gardens, the group is looking at how it can introduce renewable heat sources and is considering both geothermal energy and water source heat pumps. The site is easily accessible to sustainable transport, being in close proximity to Partick interchange. Plans also include a bridge across the River Kelvin, linking the Riverside Museum to Therme Scotland and expanding access to the Glasgow waterfront. A second bridge will be built by Glasgow City Council over the River Clyde, between Govan and Partick which will enable access for all communities. Therme Scotland will be Therme’s second wellbeing destination in the UK after the Therme Manchester £250m plus project, also on a site owned by Peel L&P. Bosta’s Parent Company Buys Two UK Plastic Piping Experts MegaGroup has completed the take-over of two British plastic piping expert companies – Plimat and EPCO – with their offices and warehouses in Southampton and Leeds respectively. The takeover fits the ambition of the Group wanting to become a top-5 player in all their core-sectors in Northern Europe and the strategy of acquiring leading companies in the market to achieve that. With this take-over MegaGroup has significantly grown their position in the UK plastic pipe market. Bernard Verburg, CEO MegaGroup: “We continuously invest in new products, services and in knowledge. This has resulted in some encouraging growth results for MegaGroup over the past years. In order to accelerate our growth in the UK, we have partnered up with two leading wholesalers in plastic piping, Plimat and EPCO. Together with our local company Bosta UK Ltd, we
can really add value for all our customers, offering them a wider range of products and extended ordering options.” Plimat and EPCO will keep their own name and will service their customers in the same way their customers are used of them, from their local warehouses. Plimat UK was established in 2007 as an independent UK distributor of U-PVC and ABS plastic piping systems. An important part of its range consists of Plimat PVC-U fittings and ABS fittings produced by Plimat Portugal, which is also an important supplier to MegaGroup. Established in 1994 as a distributor of PVC and ABS piping solutions with a specialisation in larger size fittings and pipes, EPCO’s customers are mostly based in the middle and northern part of the UK. Sharron Davies Has A Vision For A New Generation Of Leisure Spaces
Olympian, Sharron Davies, has joined forces with Paragon Structures to bring affordable, accessible and sustainable sports and leisure facilities to communities across the UK to make a real difference to the nation’s mental and physical health. Passionate about health and fitness, the former Olympic swimmer said environmentally friendly and fit-forpurpose sports and recreation facilities are key to tackling the rising levels of obesity and inactivity in the UK. Becoming an ambassador and shareholder in Paragon, who are specialist providers of insulated tensioned membrane buildings, marks a turning point in Sharron’s career. “I love what I do, but I now want to be involved in something that has more impact and leaves a lasting legacy. And I can’t think of anything more important than helping to get people more active and healthy,” she said. Sharron advised she wants to work with local authorities, schools and sports clubs, colleges and universities to open their eyes to the benefits of modern buildings so they can more easily develop the multi-purpose facilities the UK so desperately needs. “It’s time to think differently about
how we build health and fitness spaces. Great facilities don’t have to take two years to construct and they don’t need to be so expensive. Modern tensioned membrane structures like those from Paragon are both beautiful and fantastic quality. We can significantly reduce the total build programme and they are up to 40% cheaper too. They’ve proved very successful in the US, Canada and Europe, so it’s time we benefitted from them here in the UK.” Paragon Structures 01225 618188 www.paragonstructures.com
RLSS UK Launches Bespoke Qualification For Swim Schools A new health and safety qualification for swim school owners and operators has been launched as the sector continues to experience unprecedented demand following the easing of lockdown restrictions. Developed by leading health and safety and swimming pool experts, the RLSS UK Swim School Health & Safety Award is designed to help swim school owners understand their legal duty regarding health and safety to ensure the safety of children, parents and employees as their business develops. The training is tailored specifically to the swim school environment and gives participants a thorough understanding of how to run a safe and successful swim school. The course shares the experiences of other swim school owners, best practices, and lessons learnt from previous health and safety issues in the sector. Crucially, it also includes basic pool plant knowledge, HR policies and procedures and highlights the implications of failing to have robust systems in place. Jo Talbot, RLSS UK Director, said: “Swim schools have never been so busy; health and safety must remain a priority for businesses as they service the extraordinary demand for swimming lessons. There are a lot of generic health and safety qualifications in circulation but, our new award has been developed in direct response to calls from swim schools and therefore is bespoke to their needs and responsibilities to give them peace of mind.” The flexible training is delivered online, over 18 hours, and in varied formats to suit the demands of a swim school. against a record number of entries to secure the accolade for her strength in overcoming personal difficulties while managing the challenges of the pandemic. High praise was also given to how Victoria supported the Puddle Ducks team’s mental wellbeing as well as how she organised local pool training
to create more work opportunities. Commenting on the award win, Victoria said: “Puddle Ducks is really special to me as it’s been a much-needed lifeline for not just myself but also the many families the Puddle Ducks team help every day. The past year has certainly come with its challenges but I’m so proud of the whole team for how we’ve been able to adapt and grow. ISPE Return To Live Seminars And The 2021 ISPE Awards
Heatstar Close Out 2021 With The Return Of Free Technical Training Seminars Over the years, Heatstar has gained a reputation for their knowledge and expertise in the field of swimming pool environmental control and they have a clear aim to pass that knowledge on to pool trade professionals through the utilisation of their free of charge technical training seminars. Since their introduction nearly five years ago, the company has seen nearly 500 delegates attend with interest in the course growing rapidly. After being placed on hold for nearly 18 months due to COVID19, Heatstar and AstralPool UK are undertaking several courses before the end of the year, with demand being so high that the first 5 dates were fully booked within 1 hour of being released. As a result, further dates have now been added. The seminars will again be hosted by David Hayles – Technical Manager of Heatstar and organised and assisted by Ron O’Sullivan of AstralPool UK. Each seminar runs for half a day – typically around 5 hours, and
include practical tuition, training materials, lunch and a Training Seminar Attendance Certificate, all free of charge. Training will take place in both Fareham and Doncaster to allow members of the UK pool trade to attend a course that is in a convenient location to them. The main purpose of the seminars is to assist engineers of the swimming pool trade in gaining the knowledge required to carry out the installation and maintenance of Heatstar systems. The seminar is also designed to develop both technical knowledge and practical application, along with a full and in-depth explanation of the technology behind the Heatstar equipment and to give a better understanding of the fundamentals of swimming pool heating and ventilation. Following a two-year break, the ISPE One-Day Seminars resumed in November with the 24th seminar taking place at the Cobham Hilton, a new venue for the Institute. Unfortunately ISPE President Philip Barlow, FISPE, was unable to be present so past-President Chris Carr, FISPE, stood in and introduced speakers throughout the day to the 50 ISPE members who were in attendance. Following a warm welcome back to a live event, Chris introduced Ian Betts, FISPE, who gave two presentations during the day based on concrete pools. Will Dando, FISPE looked at the options for lining swimming pools, and examined how to deal with problems that may occur with them. A presentation on ‘Closing down pools for the Winter’ was taken by Jimmy Lamb, FISPE and Howard Gosling, FISPE, along with the three previous speakers some intense discussions followed. This particular session highlighted one of the main reasons for the ISPE Seminars – an exchange of views, opinions and ideas based on personal experiences of those present. Howard Gosling then gave his own presentation looking at the latest COVID advice with regards to swimming pools. After a good lunch Chris introduced the 2021 ISPE Awards. Certificates were presented to the three newly qualified Technicians who were present. Chris Carr then turned to the Gartside Cup, awarded for the student who achieved the highest overall marks in their exams and congratulated Ed Hegarty, TnISPE (Cert.) from DG Pool & Leisure Ltd on his success. Dave Candler Named As One Of UK’s “Top 20 Dynamic CEOs Of 2021” Following on from receiving the coveted Outstanding Leadership Award at this year’s ukactive awards, STA’s CEO Dave Candler has now been named as one of the “Top 20 Dynamic CEOs of 2021” in the UK. Dave was first approached and nominated by The CEO publication (the curators of the Top 20 CEO listings here in the UK and USA) back in September, because of all of the work he had done to support the aquatics industry through the pandemic. This then led to Dave being interviewed by The CEO publication, where he features this month as one of “Top 20 Dynamic CEOs of 2021” in the UK, alongside CEOs selected

from 19 other types of business sectors – making Dave the only CEO on the list from the UK leisure sector. The CEO publication state their aims are to “showcase some of the most prominent CEOs in the world; CEOs that have not only transformed their lives, but also the
organisations they are leading and the lives of all those that surround them”. Commenting on the accolade, Dave said: “I was truly shocked when The CEO publication contacted me out of the blue and then invited me to be a part of this Top 20 feature. Leisure, let alone swimming, is rarely featured in business accolades of this type, so it is a great honour for me personally – and for the STA and swimming in general – to be recognised in this way.” STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

Triogen® AOP Clear Combines UV And Ozone Technologies For Use In Commercial Pools Scottish-based manufacturer triogen® joined the BIO-UV Group in 2019 and as a result of the merger, the group recently unveiled its new triogen®AOP Clear system for swimming pools and spas, with integrated technologies and mastered know-how. Featuring an innovative process which combines the disinfection and oxidation properties of Ozone, medium pressure ultraviolet light and hydroxyl radicals, triogen® AOP Clear is one of the most advanced water treatment solutions that are available for the rapid removal of organic and inorganic pollutants not removed by Ozone or UV alone. Commercial swimming pools benefit from its triple-action for hard to remove contaminants such as chloramines and other residuals commonly found in the pool water, keeping it cleaner and clearer than ever before. The triogen® AOP Clear is the result of 30 years of experience in water treatment which has now been updated for the 21st century with a new HMI and ‘Plug and Play’ features whilst the UV lamp located at the front of the unit helps to facilitate maintenance and operations in tight environments. AOP Clear is an ideal, single solution that removes the need for separate deozonation for a wide range of public and commercial swimming pool environments, including waterparks, leisure centres, destination spas, school and hotel pools plus many more. Whether Big Or Small, NIVEKO Have The Perfect Pool Solution
The aim of NIVEKO’s corporate philosophy is to accentuate the individuality of each and every customer and to offer a product that reflects his or her unique personality down to the finest detail. The range of pools available from NIVEKO mirrors this approach with two skimmer and five overflow options to choose from. This broad portfolio enables the firm to offer the maximum amount of flexibility and regardless of whether a small, medium or larger pool is required, the quality of the technologies used is always equally high. This extensive range is made possible by the fact that the firm’s pools are all manufactured on an individual basis. This means that the NIVEKO portfolio does not offer any standard dimensions or any pools with pre-set configurations. Everything, including the pool size, is fully configurable, meaning there is no limit to each customer’s dreams and ideas – which can be transformed into reality without the slightest compromise. The same is also true of the shape, where the current trend of rectangular lines continues to dominate. However, the customisable range of options for NIVEKO pools certainly doesn’t end there. There are six pool colours to choose from, eight different step types and many built-in pool parts too. One beautiful example of a smaller pool is the NIVEKO Evolution. This one blends in perfectly with the garden of the semi-detached house. As space was limited, the pool had to be customised literally with centimetre precision, although the sizing options meant that the greatest possible amount of free space was used. Complete with Apollo steps and NIVEKO Plus stainless steel built-ins, it is proof that even a small pool can make a big impression. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Acoustic Panels That Can Embrace The Extreme For sustainable ceiling solutions for wet leisure environments, Wrexham-based SKANDA Acoustics may have the answer. Recent tests by a Danish Technological Institute showed that their Troldtekt acoustic panels withstand moisture levels up to 98%, even when combined with high temperatures up to 40°C. This new round of stringent testing reinforces the fact that the panels are suitable for the most demanding of wet, warm and humid environments such as swimming pools, changing rooms and shower rooms. In these environments, it was found that the panels are dimensionally stable and retain their flatness. This means they do not warp over time, giving them a life span in excess of 50 years. The panels are inherently robust and durable because the combined strength of the cement coupled with the breathability of wood means the structure does not rot and acts as an antimicrobial surface resisting fungal growth and other microorganisms. For very humid environments where chlorine is also present, Troldtekt offers special colour matching structure screws in the highest corrosion protection category. This means it is now possible to have a complete C60 profile system in steel where both the profiles and screws are C5 rated. Founded on the Cradle-to-Cradle design concept, Troldtekt’s natural and inherently sustainable panels are available in a variety of different surfaces and colours and contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, DGNB and LEED ratings. In addition to their high sound absorption and tactile surface, they offer high durability and low-cost lifecycle performance. Available in various sizes and in four grades, from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.
The Divina from Piscine Laghetto® by AstralPool is the ultimate swimming pool from the Italianbased manufacturer. This above- or semi in-ground pool has many attractive features that set a new benchmark for contemporary and stylish swimming pools. Equipped with the exclusive filtration and water treatment system developed by Piscine Laghetto®, Divina includes a sunbathing area with cushions in Nautical Sky fabric for moments of absolute relaxation. The integrated equipment area is discreetly combined into the pool structure and is accessible under the sunbathing area. Divina is the epitomy of Italian design – the pool panels are made of synthetic rattan fibre handwoven on an aluminum frame and available in two colours, Laghetto® White or Grey, while the pool liner is offered in White or Beige. The sunbed in nautical Sky fabric, the ladder and the silver-coloured LED spotlight complete this design, giving it an elegant and modern
touch. In addition, it is possible to combine some lounge elements to create a lounge area with cushions and transform this space into a real living area surrounded by water! It is possible to complete the pool equipment using accessories including LED projectors, countercurrent swim system, water heating, and winter or summer covers. Divina is much easier to assemble than a traditional pool of similar size and installation is simple with no complex construction works being required. It is possible to choose between two solutions: installation on a concrete slab or assembling directly on the ground with a specific basement kit supplied. Available in four sizes, Divina is a versatile, durable and refined pool for moments of fun with family and friends or as a wellbeing area to relax in. AstralPool UK 01329 514000 www.astralpool.co.uk

Golden Coast Expands Sales Team As Hot Tub Craze Continues To help keep pace with increasing demand for its widely acclaimed tubhub range, Golden Coast has recruited a new addition to its sales team. fact that it’s a one-stop-shop for everything from steps and cover lifters to spa pillows, lighting, and of course, rubber ducks. My particular favourite is the inSPArations aromatherapy products. There are some really lovely fragrances available.” Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast added: “The sector has been really receptive to tubhub since we launched it earlier this year, as it gives the trade more opportunities to generate additional sales at the point of purchase. With the recent COP26 Climate Change Conference in the news, and with energy prices rising, efficiency is on everyone’s mind at the moment. So there has never been a better time to look at alternative sources of energy. Poole-based Park Leisure Solutions Ltd, the manufacturers of Climacube, have spent the last 20 years building and perfecting a range of water heating products specifically designed for the water leisure market. They promise savings of up to 80% power and 60% time in bringing a hot tub or spa from ambient to a useable 36°C temperature using patented thermodynamic technologies. Whilst this may seem like magic, the Climacube system uses a heat pump-like approach to take heat energy from the surrounding air, even in temperatures that seem positively chilly. Whilst this process does draw some power from a regular 13A power supply, it still manages to put 7kW of energy into the water for each 1kW of electricity used. A range of different Climacubes
have been developed to suit domestic hot tubs, spas and swim spas in holiday park environments. There’s even large scale units designed to heat whole holiday lodges. Each is designed to be either installed along with the spa, or can be retrofitted onto already installed units, and can work alongside or independently of any existing water heating. On top of this, UK hot tub brand Sunbeach Spas have partnered with Climacube to bring to market the Sunbeach HB1200 – a compact unit utilising all of Climacube’s energy saving technology, designed for domestic and holiday park spas up to 1,200 litre capacity. In the coming years, the market is likely to see changes in the permitted ways to provide heating. With the Sunbeach HB1200 being available from early 2022, saving energy, money and the planet could be one of the easiest New Year’s resolutions to keep! Portugal’s Most Successful Swimming Squad Relies On Waterco Products Sporting Clube de Portugal – otherwise known simply as Sporting – is home to one of Portugal’s most decorated football teams as well as the country’s most successful swimming squads. The squad swims at the Multidesportivo Sporting, a building near the José Alvalade Stadium. The centre includes two swimming pools, both built in 2003. In addition to the swimming squad, the pools are regularly used by the football players. With a leaking filter disrupting the centre’s plant room, and tight access presenting installation challenges, staff turned to Sporting sponsor and water quality water maintenance company, CIMAI, for specialist advice. “Because of a lack of access to their technical area, it was not possible to replace the filter with another regular one, so they approved our suggestion to replace the faulty filter with two Waterco Hydron Split SMDT 1600s,” explained CIMAI General Manager, Pedro Mesquita. “As soon as we presented the specific advantages of Waterco’s Split SMDT filters, they decided almost immediately.” “Waterco’s SMDT split tank filters provided the perfect solution,” added Waterco Europe’s Sales Director, Jo Ainsworth. “Ideal for retrofitting, they can be delivered in two parts and easily fit through a standard double doorway.” Waterco’s specially engineered tanks can then be assembled on site in the plant room. The two halves seal perfectly using a double O-ring and are held together by a flange using bolts and nuts. Built using the latest in gel coated fibreglass
technology, they are designed for water treatment and commercial swimming pool facilities. With both swimming pools used mainly by Sporting’s elite competitive teams, minimum downtime was critical as closing the facility would have meant interrupting training schedules. “Since we have been partners for many years, and because of the quality of work we continuously develop with them, they trusted our suggestion,” said Mesquita. “Of course, they also considered the reputation of Waterco and its products.” Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

The End To Yet Another Busy Year! In this final issue of 2021, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights recent initiatives involving BISHTA and SPATA and thanks the much-valued individuals who have contributed to the work of the associations and SPATEX
A
s we draw to the end of 2021, I wanted to reflect on another momentous year for our industry, including the challenges of supply chain pressures, but also to comment on the positive things that continue to return life to a greater degree of ‘normality’. It is important for everyone to work together to help ease some of the supply chain pressures for raw materials, shipping containers, transport staff, etc. Price increases have also been ongoing at a significant level and frequency, some of which has to be passed onto trade and / or end-user customers. The key message is to ensure that customer expectations are managed very carefully to avoid disappointment and frustration. Many signs of returning to normality are becoming apparent, with Jamie Smith recently hosting his President’s Weekend in Windsor and Eton (please see page 33 for more information). This autumn has also witnessed the return of trade shows in the UK (and pool and spa shows in Europe and beyond). Having recently attended the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation show at the NEC (as an exhibitor), it was striking just how many visitors wanted to be out talking to potential suppliers. The two-day show was over in a flash; from my perspective, it had been a good way of raising the importance of key Health & Safety messages about hot tubs being used appropriately in business settings (holiday parks and homes). When it comes to our own industry show,
SPATEX exhibitors recently attended an online meeting to catch up on the latest news regarding the newly re-named Coventry Building Society Arena (previously the Ricoh Arena). A tremendous amount of investment is going into the Arena for events such as the Commonwealth Games, which will benefit SPATEX exhibitors and visitors. We all look forward to seeing you for SPATEX 2022 from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 February, where SPATEX will celebrate 25 years of live shows. The 2022 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards winners will be announced on Tuesday 1 February at the annual Industry Gala Evening held at SPATEX. BISHTA will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, and SPATA will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. Please remember this event is open to the whole industry, so book your seats now by calling 01264 356210 (or 356211). Some of the British Pool & Hot Tub Award winners will also have found out if they have won a gold, silver or bronze award at the 2021 EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards, and the winners will be showcased in the next issue. Since the last SPN issue, both BISHTA and SPATA have held their respective Information Days online. The speakers provided some excellent topics, and you can read a followup from some of them in this issue of SPN (please see page 31). Finally, as we are at the end of another year, I would like to thank the dedicated team that provides support to our members and exhibitors/visitors; Jan Hardy, Sallie LeslieGolding, Isabel Lock (who has recently left the team), Caroline Cross, Debbie Thornton and Claire Maguire (who has recently joined the team). Find out more about Sallie’s work with the PIP Committee and the strategy for next year on page 32. All of these talented people

play a vital part in the Andover office on behalf of the BSPF, BISHTA, SPATA and PIP. SPATEX also benefits from the outstanding expertise brought by Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and Thay Castro, along with Howard Gosling (SPATEX Chairman) and the rest of the SPATEX Directors. To the other dedicated Chairs of the respective Boards, Committees, Councils, all of their applicable committee colleagues and our industry tutors, I am also hugely grateful, namely; Jamie Smith (BSPF), Richard Carrington (SPATA), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA), Dyfed Thompson-Smith (PIP), and to Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary (for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP). Both Richard and Pete will be stepping down as Chairs of SPATA and BISHTA, respectively, at the annual Industry Gala Evening on 1 February. Ben Studdy and Dorian Davies will be stepping into these roles. There are many dedicated members of the BISHTA and SPATA technical committees who have worked tirelessly again this year under the respective chairmanship of Howard Gosling and Peter Lang. SPATA is also very fortunate to have five inspectors to call upon (Peter Lang, Tim Bareham, Ian Betts, Dennis Freeman-Wright and Steve Conway) to help support members; my thanks to you all. Have a great festive break and please note our office will be closed from lunchtime on Friday 24 December 2021 and will reopen on Tuesday 4 January 2022; see you at the Coventry Building Society Arena for SPATEX 2022!

Annual Association Events Provide Insights, Feedback And Opinions Featuring a host of guest speakers, this year’s BISHTA And SPATA Annual Information And Networking Days provided an opportunity for association members to gain fresh insights plus share feedback and opinions!
T
he Information and Networking Days provide an invaluable opportunity to disseminate topical information with BISHTA and SPATA members, hear members’ feedback, and share opinions with industry peers. This year, it was planned to return to live events in Andover and Doncaster; however, following comments from members, the events were altered to be hosted online so that travel time wasn’t an issue. The online format allowed members to dip into sessions if their time was limited due to the current high workload many businesses are experiencing. The BISHTA event took place on Tuesday 19 October, with members and prospective members invited to the online WebEx platform. Chris Hayes, BISHTA’s Managing Director, hosted the day along with guest presenters, with the following being presented: • How Does BISHTA Promote Safety? – Chris Hayes: How BISHTA has been putting its strapline of ‘Promoting Safe Hot Tub Standards’ to work regarding the following: hot tub lifting, RoSPA concerns regarding drownings, and electrical issues. • Trading Standards – Adam Chambers and Laura Haydock: BISHTA’s working relationship with Hampshire County Council Trading Standards team, covering the help provided on revamping member factsheets on Consumer Rights, and a separate version on B2B contracts. • Training and Workforce Development – Pete Grinnall: The latest updates on the courses available to members and the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). • Water Testing in Business Settings – HSE – Duncan Smith and Margaret Wade: Working with the HSE, BISHTA has been liaising with its members to provide anonymous details of legionella testing in hot tubs in holiday parks and homes, with updates on the findings. • BISHTA Review – Chris Hayes: The value of BISHTA, plans for the future and the benefits of your BSPF membership. The SPATA event took place on Wednesday 20 October, with members and prospective members also invited to the online WebEx platform. Once again, Chris Hayes, SPATA’s Managing Director, hosted the day along with guest presenters, with the following being presented: • Workforce Development with ISPE and STA – Tim Bareham: SPATA is working with the ISPE and other bodies such as STA to drive up standards in workforce development.

• Workforce Development – Richard Carrington: Industry courses available and what’s in development. • SPATA Awards – Ben Studdy: The SPATA awards criteria and improvements to enable more members to show their compliance to industry standards and the Code of Ethics. • Trading Standards – Adam Chambers and Laura Haydock: SPATA’s working relationship with Hampshire County Council Trading Standards team and the help revamp member factsheets on Consumer Rights and a separate version on B2B contracts. • SPATA Review – Chris Hayes: The value of SPATA, plans for the future and the benefits of your BSPF membership. There were also topical presentations at both events to help members with business support and marketing. Firstly, from Mark Page (Business Coach at Action Coach), who has over 25 years of experience as a highly successful Director / Business Leader. Mark has a proven record of developing sales and strategies and managing numerous businesses, including acquisition, sale, organic growth and legacy planning. He now leverages this experience for the benefit of others. Mark shared insights into how getting business, work and life balance to the optimum level could provide rewards and the areas to focus on to start the process of levelling up. A presentation from Sallie Leslie-Golding (PR & Marketing Manager) followed this.
Sallie works closely with the Pool Industry Promotions Committee (PIP) to strategically plan initiatives for the water leisure industry (as a whole) and manages the PR and marketing for BISHTA and SPATA. Sallie gave an overview of the stories that have been ‘In the News’ that affect the industry; she gave examples of how the PIP Marketing Strategy, the Industry Views document, and the Crisis Management Plan come into play. She shared details of the new updates in the Members’ Hub to support PR and marketing and how working together is one of the biggest strengths of the trade associations. Both days ended with an open forum that gives members a chance to have their say on topics relevant to their businesses and the wider industry. BISHTA and SPATA would like to thank the presenters who shared their expertise during the events and Nsure for their sponsorship. But most importantly, would like to thank all of the attendees who took part, not only for supporting the events but also for sharing their questions and feedback! Members can view PDF presentations and webinar videos from each of the days in the online Members’ Hub. BISHTA 01264 356211 www.bishta.co.uk SPATA 01264 356210 www.spata.co.uk

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
A Strategy To Build Trust And Awareness With Consumers Working on behalf of the industry as a whole, the Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) committee aims to give the pool and hot tub industry greater visibility, as Sallie Leslie-Golding, PIP’s PR & Marketing Manager, explains
T
o promote the water leisure industry as a whole and encourage positive, impactful public relations, PIP was established in the mid-1990s with an emphasis on PR and marketing on behalf of the pool and hot tub industry. Today’s committee has representatives from the pool, wellness and hot tub sectors, providing a combination of experience to cover all parts of the industry. The PIP committee is chaired by Dyfed Thompson-Smith (AstralPool UK) and supported by the current committee members: Mark Ramsden (CPC), Jeremy Chalke (Spruce Pools), Neil Dalziel (Aquaflex), Phil Gordon (Jim Gordon Associates LLP), Jon Herbert (Rockingham Swimming Pools), Arun Sarna (Hot Tub Suppliers), John Hall (Jetform Swimming Pools) and Dorian Davies (Doric Marketing). I manage the PR and Marketing functions, with assistance from Chris Hayes (BSPF – Managing Director). While promoting the industry (as a whole) is PIP’s ultimate goal, there is great value in encouraging businesses to join BISHTA and SPATA too. Getting companies to join the trade associations helps raise the industry’s profile so that consumers can shop with confidence in the knowledge that trade association members are working to nationally recognised standards and a Code of Ethics. This, in turn, builds a stronger industry with a more effective voice, filtering out those companies who may be unethically trading and selling sub-standard products. The trade associations aim is to raise the profile of member companies to the forefront of consumers’ minds to provide trust and peace of mind. Typically, the committee meets 3 − 4 times per year, and on an annual basis, the PIP strategy is reviewed to set plans for the coming year. The work programme incorporates items such as traditional and digital PR (Trade and Consumer), media monitoring, contact with press and media, case studies, factsheets, the PIP marketing toolkit, exhibitions and events, website

development and performance, e-newsletters, social media, market research, advertising, partnerships and campaigns (such as #everydaycation). With funding coming from SPATEX (the UK’s only dedicated pool, spa and wellness show), licensing agreements such as with SPN and What Pool & Hot Tub magazines, plus contributions from BISHTA and SPATA members.
WHAT OBJECTIVES DOES PIP WANT TO ACHIEVE? • Every relevant household has an awareness of the benefits of wet leisure products. • Everyone likely to choose to buy a pool, hot tub, etc., is aware of the benefits of working with BISHTA and SPATA members. There is a range of long and short-term goals that PIP has set to achieve the above objectives, and they include: • Working with members to build and develop media interest stories: To gain consumer press/media coverage through the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (and EUSA awards), winners and case studies, and trade press coverage that builds the trade profiles and can encourage new membership prospects. These stories need to embrace messages that demonstrate the relevant purchasing decisions made by end-users. • Building specific consumer media relationships: Building on our press/media contacts list and refining them to have more one-to-one press/media relationships for those that influence end-users. • Achieving increased and broad digital
media coverage: To harness digital opportunities to widen our PR reach – developing our press/media contacts and press communication. • Online Presence Management = Growing our online profiles: Raising BISHTA and SPATA profiles through continued development of our websites, SEO, digital and social marketing with end-users. Growing our social media channels and increasing our website’s performance, including the ‘everydaycation’ campaign website. • Amplifying our Trade profile through participation at national events: Where possible, participate at national events or shows that fit with our target audiences. This could be via industry shows and events that attract our target audiences, e.g. home and garden design, landscaping, holiday parks, health and wellbeing. • Promoting the Wider Water Leisure Industry: Ensure that the PIP committee always has on its agenda to discuss ways to promote the water leisure industry (as a whole). Members of BISHTA and SPATA have access to a range of PIP PR and marketing resources, including the PIP Marketing Toolkit and a collection of webinars, available online 24-7 in the respective Members’ Hub. As a committee, PIP works to give the industry greater visibility. If you would like to share your feedback, suggestions and ideas to help PIP achieve its strategic goals, or if you would like to know how you can put actions into place to support the goals of PIP and drive consumer awareness, please email sallie@pool-industry-promotions.co.uk

A Weekend Of Celebration For The BSPF President And His Guests In this issue, we highlight the BSPF President’s Weekend (aka the Pool & Hot Tub Industry Weekend) hosted by Jamie Smith (President - 2020 – 2021) and his wife Caroline, which was held in the historic towns of Windsor and Eton from 17 – 19 September 2021
T
he President’s Weekend is a social event, held on a biennial basis, that is open to the whole industry to attend. It is an opportunity for the BSPF President to provide a combined networking opportunity for business and pleasure, to celebrate the President’s time in office (two years) and to bring the industry closer together. This year, the event was hosted at The Christopher Hotel, in the heart of Eton’s High Street, opposite the world-famous (and architecturally stunning) Eton School and a short walk from the River Thames and Windsor (including the Castle). Jamie and Caroline welcomed guests on Friday evening (with help from Jan Hardy and Chris Hayes from the BSPF) with dinner in the hotel’s restaurant. The weekend’s events continued on Saturday afternoon when guests met on the Windsor Promenade to embark on a boat trip along the Thames, seeing the magnificent views of Windsor, followed by some R&R which allowed those present to enjoy the sights and sounds of the town,
see the ‘changing of the guard’ at the castle plus enjoy the many shops dotted around the cobbled streets. After an enjoyable day, guests met up again in the evening for dinner at The Boatman, Windsor’s only Restaurant & Public House on the river, which is nestled below Windsor Castle and overlooking Eton Bridge. After dinner, everyone decided that the night was still young, so having been blessed with great weather, there was an impromptu stroll around Eton leading onto a nearby pub with entertainment. While in the pub, they were serenaded with a performance by the lead singer of a local band, which was quite a talking point for those there to witness it – a classic ‘you had to be there’ moment, making memories to share with a smile and a laugh. After a busy weekend of networking and socialising, a BSPF meeting was held to discuss important industry topics. Chaired by Chris Hayes (the BSPF’s Managing Director), attendees at the meeting reviewed the various agenda items, including a review of the
weekend itself, with the general consensus that the event in Eton and Windsor had been a great success and had provided an excellent opportunity to get together in person, given the restrictions over the past eighteen months. The BSPF thanks everyone who supported Jamie’s President’s Weekend and is very grateful for all of Jamie’s hard work and dedication during his time in office so far. Jamie passes over the presidency to Pete Grinnall at the 2022 Industry Gala Evening hosted by the BSPF on 1 February 2022 and held during SPATEX (1 – 3 February). To see further images of the weekend, please view the photo gallery on either the BISHTA or SPATA websites under the Trade tab and Networking. STA POOL PLANT – PH
Delving Deeper – Why pH Is The Most Important Parameter In follow-up to the water testing article in the October issue, Luke Griffiths, STA’s Pool Plant Qualification Development Manager, delves deeper into the importance of pH WHAT IS PH? pH is the power of hydrogen within the water. The pH scale refers to how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. pH zero is water containing no hydroxyl ions, so is most acidic. At the other extreme is pH 14, where the water contains no hydrogen ions and so is as alkaline as it is possible to be. Neutral water has a pH of 7. The pH scale is logarithmic. This means that reducing the pH by one unit means a ten-fold increase in the concentration of hydrogen ions. So, increasing the pH from 7 to 8 involves a ten times reduction in the concentration of hydrogen ions. So, although the difference between pH 7 and pH 8 might not sound much, it represents a very large difference in the chemical composition of the water. The Hydrogen Ion is acidic, whereas the Hydroxyl Ion is alkaline. Therefore, whether a solution is acid or alkali depends on the ratio of these two different ions. If water has equal quantities of these Ions then we get a neutral pH of 7. The level of pH is dependent on the concentration of these Ions in a solution or our pool and spa water. This pH reading therefore determines whether a substance is neutral, acid or alkali.
WHY MEASURE PH? • Bather comfort: pH hugely affects the comfort of bathers within the pool or spa, bearing in mind the pH of eye fluid is approximately 7.5 and fluctuations away from this pH can have a radical effect on the eye and therefore bather comfort. If the pH was to fall below 6, then the acidic solution has the potential to dissolve teeth. The skin also becomes very sensitive when the pH drifts above 8 and below 7. If the pH goes above 8 then there is a potential for the lipids on the skin to be broken down, leaving the hair follicles open to infection. • Maintenance: If the water becomes acidic (below a pH of 7) then corrosion can occur on plant room equipment, pool tank grout, tiles and screed which can be costly. At low pH, water can even dissolve copper/metal
pH has a critical role in ensuring the water in facilities does not become excessively corrosive or scale forming
pipe work and metal pump parts. When the pH starts to rise above 8 then the water can transform to scale forming where lime scale is likely to accumulate, and potentially cause blockages, especially in equipment such as heat exchangers. It is interesting to note that under corrosive conditions, calcium can be leached out of grout and appear as deposition. Sometimes this is misinterpreted as deposition, whereas it is the opposite. pH therefore has a critical role in ensuring the water in our facility does not become excessively corrosive or scale forming. • Flocculation: Most coagulants work best at pH 7.3-7.4. Altering the pH will change the distribution of electrical charges. The pH can also have a strong effect on the degree of hydrolysis of the coagulant, which will affect its performance. • Effectiveness of Chlorine: Free chlorine, which is measured via the undertaking of a DPD1 test, is broken down to the two forms of chlorine that co-exist − Hypochlorous Acid & Hypochlorite Ion. These two compounds are what make up our free chlorine; the Hypochlorous Acid is the very effective disinfectant, whereas the Hypochlorite Ion is the weak disinfectant. To break down and eliminate the threat of bacteria we want as much Hypochlorous Acid as possible. The percentage uptake of these two chemical compounds is dependable on the pH of the pool water. The graph above details the effect pH has on the percentage
...although the difference between pH 7 and pH 8 might not sound much, it represents a very large difference in the chemical composition of the water” www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 37_SPN_December_21_STA.indd 37
production of the Hypochlorous Acid and the Hypochlorite Ion. As the graph demonstrates, at a pH of 8.0 only 20% of the chlorine is in the effective form of Hypochlorous Acid. The closer the pH is to 7.0, the higher the production of the Hypochlorous Acid. Therefore, without managing pH our chlorine can become ineffective at killing bacteria and ensuring safe bathing water is provided.
WHAT PH DO WE WANT? For pools PWTAG recommend a pH value of between 7.0 and 7.4 to be the range when using chlorine-based disinfectants and ideally 7.0 to 7.2 for a better disinfectant effect. Spas and interactive water features should maintain pH values between 7.0 and 7.6 pH in spas and interactive water features can elevate due to aeration and agitation which can cause an increase in pH as CO2 escapes. All the above factors make it imperative to ensure that pH is managed and within parameters. This ensures bather comfort, effective flocculation, and maintenance, as well as chlorine efficiency to control bacteria within the pool. Plastica’s UK Manufacturing Goes From Strength To Strength As we approach the close of 2021, Plastica has continued to ride the wave of increased production and manufacturing that has been a huge part of the wet leisure industry over the last 18 months. In this issue, we take a closer look at some of their bestselling products
S
ince they were established in 1972, Sussex-based manufacturer Plastica have been producing competitively priced products for almost 50 years, and they are looking forward to celebrating this milestone next year. The company employs a large group of loyal staff with many years of experience and pride themselves in their commitment to manufacturing in the UK. In fact, over 80% of Plastica’s business is from their topquality British made products. One benefit of manufacturing in-house is that it helps to keep control over production and ensures the customer reaps the rewards of first-class products, the bestselling of which includes:
PUMPS A great example of this is the Argonaut and smaller counterpart the AG Pump. They have been a resounding success with all wet end components made in the UK and assembled in the Plastica factory. The mechanical seal made with AISI 316 stainless steel is suitable for a wide range of applications including chlorine, bromine, iodine and even sea water environments.
DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL LINERS The material used for Plastica’s liners is impregnated with algaecide and antioxidants giving a five-year pro-rata guarantee. Plus, their domestic liners also come with an embossed serial number for efficient quoting and production when ordering a replacement. A new range of four Mediterranean inspired liners, exclusive to Plastica will be available in 2022. Their Extreme reinforced on-site lining is ideal for new pools, refurbs on leaking concrete or tiled pools and is a durable solution for the commercial sector.
COMMERCIAL COVERS AND REELS From Olympic sized competition pools to challenging freeform fun pools, Plastica have the expertise to produce and install Commercial covers and reel systems across the country. Plastica’s commercial covers retain the heat, which is the most effective means of reducing an indoor swimming pool’s energy consumption. Fitting the right cover will see a reduction in energy bills of an average of 23% per annum (figures based on actual independent case studies), meaning payback can be achieved in as little as 12 months!
WOODEN POOL KITS Plastica’s range of quality wooden swimming pools are some of the most affordable on the market. They are made of natural high-grade wood that carries up to a ten-year warranty on the wooden structure, even if built in the ground. The Eco and Fun wooden pools are a step up from inflatable/metal-framed pools and provide a more aesthetically pleasing look to any outdoor space. Their flagship wooden pool is the Chelsea, with the largest option currently available measuring 5 x 10 metres. The new rectangular NAZCA range are built to last and make the most of available outdoor space. With simple lines, these highly adaptable pools are designed to give a quick build time.
WINTER DEBRIS COVERS The design and quality of Plastica’s Winter Debris Cover is the result of nearly five decades of the company’s experience in manufacturing covers. They are tailor-made for each customer’s pool, making it an excellent barrier against leaves and debris whilst allowing rainwater through. The covers are easy to fit, abrasion resistant, manufactured from the best quality material available, and proven to be very reliable and effective.
WATER TREATMENT No pool is complete without the right water treatment to maintain it. Within Plastica’s premises, they have a dedicated and expanding water treatment department. All chemicals are sourced by their very own Water Treatment Manager, who travels worldwide to find the best quality proven chemicals for their Relax range. This same quality product is available with own-brand labels too. The company’s in-house design team can create clear labelling, making an attractive and uniform addition to any showroom.
POOL SURROUND Plastica also offer a bespoke service on all their products. For example, handrails or ladders can be custom made to fit a client’s exact requirements. Plastica focus on the quality and safety with its 43mm 316 grade stainless steel ladders. The tube conforms to British Standards, as do the stainless-steel treads and double top tread. Everything is moulded in-house and supplied with their own custom designed treads and fixtures. Finally, it’s clear to see that Plastica takes control over the quality and what they produce to suit their trade customer’s needs. Manufacturing their own goods in-house is another additional benefit for customers, who can be assured of British standards being conformed to. Plastica 01424 857802 www.plasticapools.net

SPAS Q&A
The ‘Need To Knows’ When Choosing A Spa In this latest issue, Darren Tillyer, Managing Director at Chester- based GMT Spas International provides answers to a number of questions surrounding spas – their use, their benefits and what to look for when specifying one Q: What is a spa? A: A mineral spring considered to have
health-giving properties, or a bath containing hot aerated water. A GMT spa or hydrotherapy pool is a combination of both, air jets can be placed in a number of different combinations depending on the client’s requirements, massaging aching muscles or joints. Colour changing lights that help you to relax and eradicate stress. Bespoke loungers and seating combinations both tiled and stainless steel to encourage social contact.
Q: Is a spa or hydrotherapy pool beneficial to health? A: Yes, hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy or sometimes also called water cure, is a part of alternative medicine, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy that involves the use of water for pain relief and treatment. It gives emotional and psychological benefits, including a sense of calm, emotional relaxation and stress relief. Hydrotherapy is appropriate for all ages (from the youngest children to goldenagers) in treating back pain, slipped disk, issues of skeletal or muscular degeneration, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, migraines, posttrauma stress and more. The physical wellness benefits of spa pools are delivered in three ways: heat increases circulation by dilating blood vessels, buoyancy relieves joint stress by reducing your weight by 90%, and powerful jets soothe away tension with massage. All these elements work together to provide a variety of health benefits that ultimately allow you to lead more active and fulfilled lives. At GMT we install more jets as standard into each pool than any of our competitors and can custom design jet body stations which give differing jet pressure where it is needed. Particularly helpful if you have a specific health problem. With our bespoke designs, seat height, foot well depth and loungers can also be customised to a particular need. Q: Are all spas the same? A: Definitely not. You get what you see?
Well not always. Aesthetics are what you see but design is of paramount importance. At GMT, our in-house professionals create

Q: Where can I get one? A: GMT Spas International Ltd is uniquely
Q: What is a bespoke spa? A: It is whatever you want it to be. Size,
GMT have manufactured spas, hydrotherapy pools, swim spas and pools that have been installed in many locations both commercial and residential. We have produced pools of all shapes and sizes that because of existing building confines such as basements, stairwells or even roof tops and balconies have been made in many pieces. In these cases, our factory workmen attend site to join and tile the pool resulting in a product that has the integrity and looks exactly as a onepiece would. SAFETY EQUIPMENT
For When Safety Is The Number One Concern… With accidents in and around water always a concern, pool and spa safety remains a top priority. An enclosure or slatted cover will guarantee increased security, but there are numerous other solutions on the market that will either prevent unauthorised access or protect people once they are in the water. This issue, we look at a selection of products that feature safety as their key selling point and by doing so, are making wet leisure environments safer for all By Jon Wadeson
S
adly, hundreds of people drown in the UK every year and many more suffer injury, some life-changing, through non-fatal experiences. So it’s no surprise that safety in and around the UK’s swimming pools and spas is high on the agenda for both the industry and owners because by their very nature, these environments pose a number of hazards to their users, with drowning, being the most obvious one. Thankfully, fatalities within a wet leisure setting only make up a small percentage of the overall drowning figures. However, just one death within a pool or spa is one too many. These risks are ever-present in the commercial sector, but with so many more products now being found in homes across the country due to the pandemic, there’s the potential for the number of incidents to increase short term due to a lack of knowledge with so many new owners. Swimming pools and spas secured by a building, enclosure or raised moving floor can effectively eliminate the risks of unauthorised entry but there are occasions when they aren’t employed or aren’t always an option. Thankfully, though, there are plenty of other options to consider. An obvious choice is a slatted cover, but putting those aside, there are many other products that have been specifically designed with safety being their top priority and in this issue, we take a closer look at a selection of them.
Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, meaning that the cover (and the pool) are much more likely to be used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water and making them some of the safest covers on the market. In addition, all PoolLock covers will reduce the amount of heat, water and chemicals lost through evaporation, which means pool owners can save money on electricity and chemical usage. In addition to the standard fabric options, PoolLock also offers HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of three when compared to standard fabrics for similar applications. HeatLock’s closed-cell foam structure ensure that PoolLock covers are not only the safest, but also the most energy-efficient available on the market.
PoolLock Automatic Covers offer customers some of the safest, most convenient, most reliable and energy-efficient way to cover the pool. With over 30 years of experience, and installations in over 20 countries, PoolLock is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of automatic safety and slatted covers for swimming pools.
PLASTICA’S RANGE HELPS TO KEEP POOLS SAFE With over 48 years of experience in the pool trade, Plastica know only too well the importance of safety around the pool and offer a wide range of safety products to the trade. The PoolsaverTM Safety Cover has been designed by Plastica to offer a tough construction to cover a pool and keep children or animals from entering it while it is not in use. High-grade stainless ratchet straps help achieve almost effortless tension of the PoolsaverTM across the pool, ensuring this quality, yet low priced manual safety cover will safely support up to 100kg as per the latest French safety laws. Available in
POOLLOCK COVERS PROVIDE SOLID SAFETY BARRIERS Due to their many years of experience designing and producing both automatic and manual covers, PoolLock is able to work with domestic customers and architects to create tailored safety solutions to cover almost any kind of pool. If an automatic system is required, the company’s unique hydraulic-drive system means that the customer does not need any electrical components near the pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT five colours, owners can choose the colour that best suits a pool and its surroundings. Another common and safe way to keep a child from accessing a swimming pool is to install a mesh fence and Plastica’s Rollaway Fence is designed to protect children and animals from the dangers of pool water. The fencing is a safe and easy to install protection system which conforms to the French AFNOR Safety Standards. The strong, tightly-woven mesh is dark green and black in colour permitting the best transparency and therefore enhancing the look of a pool and surrounding areas. Thanks to rigidity and a lockable spring-loaded gate, unsupervised small children are unable to open or climb up this safety barrier. Lastly, Plastica offer the Immerstar Battery Powered Pool Alarm – a clever system that can detect a body falling into a swimming pool. The system has a sensor which sits in the water and analyses movement, distinguishing interference waves from those produced by a falling body. The system will emit a loud, 100dB siren, should a person or animal fall into the pool. The alarm is suitable for solid construction in- or above-ground pools, up to a maximum size of 12m x 5m and has a detection range of 7m.
UK MADE ENSURES QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY FOR AQUATRAC Aquatrac is the longest established and one of most widely respected safety cover manufacturers, and their covers boast several unique features. The company is British owned and their products are UK made with the majority of parts manufactured and assembled in the company’s factory in Essex – this guarantees product quality and availability. The Aquatrac high impact extruded UPVC tracking system is the only one of its kind, is available in a choice of colours and offers a far superior finish to the more commonly used aluminium tracks. In addition, it doesn’t suffer from corrosion or deterioration caused

by swimming pool chemicals and is covered by a ten-year fair play warranty. In addition to their standard range, Aquatrac are now able to offer a number of design variations mostly related to leading edge beams, pit finishes and track levels. These have been introduced to accommodate the multitude of tile finishes and freeboard details commonly required today. The Aquatrac cover itself is high gloss UV resistant PVC, encasing a high tensile polyester mesh which provides a safe insulating barrier to a pool. It is available in a wide choice of colours as standard and carries a seven-year warranty. The drive unit has been developed over 30 years and is one of the most reliable available. The low voltage unit is supplied via cable from the control panel in the plant room. There are no dangerous electrics near the pool and no hydraulic hoses filled with oil either. The drive unit is also covered for up to ten years by the fair play warranty. Lastly, Aquatrac’s pull cords are high tensile stainless steel stranded wire, far out performing standard rope used in other
covers. Pulley wheels, brackets and fixings are all stainless steel and corrosion free as you would expect too.
KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON POOLS AND THEIR USERS There is no substitution for lifeguards at a pool, but underwater cameras can be a valuable addition to help monitor underwater activity. The EVA Optic Eveye underwater camera, available from Golden Coast, offers a highdefinition 1080p picture with a 120-degree field of view. “The EVA Optic Eveye camera shows what is happening below the surface, helping to improve day-to-day pool safety by providing an extra point of supervision, especially at exit points of slides, rapids and lazy rivers,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “Having an underwater perspective can prove extremely helpful for instructors at diving and swimming clubs, as the footage can be used as a training tool for analysing technique and progress. Parents may also want to monitor their children’s swimming lessons, and the Eveye camera allows them to do just that.” Camera footage can be viewed using a Available from Golden Coast, the EVA Optic Eveye underwater camera can be a valuable addition to help monitor underwater activity

COVERSTAR – A COVER LEADER WHEN IT COMES TO POOL SAFETY Coverstar and Certikin have been in partnership for over 20 years. The system is based on strength – supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults. Rather than using industry standard vinyl for the cover, which is popular with other manufacturers, Coverstar use the far superior Ultra Guard III vinyl composite. The high level of UV resistance offered with the Ultra Guard III will reduce the level of colour fading considerably, compared to standard vinyl, plus it offers high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, rather than using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar use an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the life of the cover and improving the overall operation. In fact, independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors webbing sewn to the cover. The Coverstar heat sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create an attractive finish! Supplied with a low-profile leading-edge bar there’s also an option to conceal the bar underneath the pool surround. Various pit covering options include flat lid, heavy duty pit trays, plus composite decking. The sliders (traditionally the weakest part of any cover) are four times as strong as any

other slider used in the industry. Furthermore, the pulley diameter is 2”, providing five times the load bearing capacity of commonly used pulleys. Such is the manufacturer’s confidence in the cover’s mechanism, it comes with a 20-year limited warranty. The cover features an exclusive heavy-duty double row of stainless-steel ball bearing pulleys which have almost triple the load bearing capacity of single row pulleys used by competitors.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT whenever a child or pet runs into them. Protect-A-Child’s Quad-Bilt™ fibreglass composite posts are the only fence posts guaranteed unbreakable and guaranteed never to become bent or crooked. The result – the fence stays straight and attractive and you never have to worry about your fence posts becoming broken. Tough mesh and a marine-grade finishing border complete the fence itself. The colour of the composite fibreglass pool fence post is built in with coloured resins – not painted or simply coated like aluminium posts. So it can never scratch off, peel off, or flake off maintaining the look and high finish quality for years to come. It will act as a windbreak and a barrier to stop debris entering the pool too. Mesh pool fence safety is dependent upon the child’s inability to open or remove the fence. A patented Point-Lock Secure Latch is the most fool proof way to prevent children from unlatching the mesh pool fence sections and gaining access to the pool. They are lockable, adjustable for fence tension, easier to use, and safer than other latches.
DRIPOOL – PROVIDING 30 YEARS OF POOL SAFETY Dripool have been at the forefront of pool safety for over 30 years and remain the UK’s only designers and manufacturers of automatic safety covers, for all shapes and types of swimming pool. One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements. The patented winding extrusion and tensioned leading edge ‘super Cam’ ensures that no front beam is required, making the The AutoSafe safety cover is the latest addition to Dripool’s range of products and is an under coping system for rectangular pools

kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, wakeboarding and banana boats on the lake. Aquatic play specialists Ustigate, who supply the award-winning range of Vortex International products in the UK, were commissioned to maximise the thrills in the fun pool and responded with an exciting multi-level indoor aquatic adventure that is suitable for all ages and abilities to enjoy. Bursting with play value, there are 16 products at ground level and an eight-metre-high Elevations™ journey that runs for 32 metres with nine sturdy staircases, 11 platforms, 62 water features and two loop-the-loop waterslides. One end of the Elevations™ is an aquatic play paradise for Craigavon’s youngest water players, featuring staircases of no more than 2-3 steps at a time and platforms of varying heights, providing views at 1 metre, 1.8 metres and 2.4 metres. It is a journey that meanders up and around to platform four where little ones are rewarded with the offer of a ride. The entire journey from ground to slide is 0-2.4 metres and completely safe as each stairway and platform is encased with complementary panels. At the top of this area, little ones will find the waterslide; a bright red closed flume with three bends and a run-out that provides a safe landing point.

SWIM SPAS – ENTRY LEVEL
Relax, Exercise Or Party – The Choice Is Yours! For customers that want to both relax and occasionally exercise in water, entrylevel swim spas ticks each box. Increasingly chosen as a replacement for a traditional small pool, these counter-current equipped products are often referred to as party spas and are aimed at budget conscious families rather than athletes that need a training aid for a serious workout. With retail prices under £20,000, we take a look at what’s available By Jon Wadeson
A
s a single product that offers all the benefits of both a small swimming pool and a hot tub or spa in a relatively affordable and straightforward to own and maintain package, it’s not surprising that entry-level swim spas have fared well in the UK, particularly over the last two seasons. For families who need to provide some water based fun and entertainment whilst keeping an eye on the pennies, there’s clearly a lot to like. The versatility of the products found at the lower end of the swim spa price range mean that owners have an area where the kids can let off some steam, and at other times, there’s also the option of a dedicated pool for casual exercising in. When the kids have gone to bed, there’s a further option of a tranquil space in which to relax – a godsend in these increasingly trying times! As an introduction to counter-current swimming, entry-level options provide a package which has always represented nothing short of outstanding value for money and this, combined with their multi-use ability has ensured their popularity. With a number of manufacturers providing budget-friendly models, we look closer at what’s available at the entry point of the swim spa market.
that are unlike any others on the market, Sunbeach’s swim spas create a smooth, straight stream of counter-current with up to 2,000+ gallons per minute of flow, free of both turbulence and air bubbles to give a sublime swimming experience, no matter what the ability level of the user might be. With power, also comes control. Unlike swim spas with limited, physical control valves, the included inverter system allows for full electronic control of the jet speed ensuring that users will always be able to find a comfortable swim speed, no matter what their ability level. Finally, build. These share the same pedigree of design and construction as the company’s Oasis Spas range, including the full-foam, multi-density insulation system for superlative heat retention and energy saving. One popular choice has been Sunbeach’s OD-39 model. This 6-seater fully-featured budget swim spa is produced with a Silver White Marble Aristech acrylic shell and features the latest Gecko touch screen control panel, Gecko in.stream 2 audio system, plus Ozonator and double filtration system for ease of maintenance. Whether it’s relaxing after a hard day, splashing around with the kids or setting a new personal best, with options for every budget, Sunbeach Spas’ Ultimate Swim Experience has all the options covered.
THE PEDIGREE SHINES THROUGH ON SUNBEACH’S SWIM SPA RANGE Whether it’s a dedicated swim spa, or a combined swim and hot tub unit, fun, fitness and relaxation are within reach of more people than ever before. To meet the rise in demand, the water leisure industry has expanded enormously, bringing newer and more innovative models to market. And East Midlands-based Sunbeach Spas is flying ahead in that regard. The company’s Ultimate Swim Experience range features eight dedicated swim spas and combined units, each of which sets themselves ahead of the crowd with three key features: Firstly, power. PASSION’S ACTIVITY MODELS OFFER A UNIQUE BUT BUDGET FRIENDLY EXPERIENCE For the last three decades, Netherlandsbased Passion Spas has been engineering and manufacturing numerous spa and hot tub models and the company has perhaps one of the widest ranges of swim spas on the market. All of the company’s models represent great value for money so it’s no surprise that their entry-level products have always been popular and they have been keen always to offer new models that keep up with the latest technology and trends. One of the company’s newest series of swim spas is the Activity, and the range offers models with two different lengths and two depths, providing flexibility at a key price point. Whether the Activity 1, 1 Deep, 2 or 2 Deep is chosen, each model is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds. On one side there is all the comfort, pleasure and therapy benefits of a traditional spa or hot tub which is provided by 50 massage jets, whilst on the other side, the swim function is equipped with Passion Spas’ unique River Swim System™ and Current-lift Technology™. The River Swim system consists of two floor jets and five large swim jets, placed in a row to create a steady flow of water over the entire width of the swim spa. Users can control the intensity of the water stream and when doing so, the flow is equally divided over the

whole width of the current. Because of this unique technique, the water stream covers a wide area and is effectively positioned below the water surface, enabling users to swim with their head comfortably above water. If the intensity of the River Swim System is decreased, the Current-Lift Technology is automatically activated, enabling the swimmer to remain in the prone position.
ADL OFFERS QUALITY SWIM SPA OPTIONS FOR BUYERS ON A BUDGET Available from Aqua Design & Leisure (ADL), the award-winning Catalina Mardi Gras is the original space saving swim trainer and party spa. Built in the US and originally launched in the UK in 2012, the Mardi Gras is now considered to be one of the most popular swim/party spas in the world. The newest incarnation features all of Catalina’s classic design cues including their tiled waterline and swimlane. It comes with six relaxing crystal water fountains, 11 seats and a total of 28 hydrotherapy jets that are spread over all seating positions. So even when at full
capacity all 11 bathers can benefit from the Mardi Gras hydrotherapy massage. For exercise the Mardi Gras features two river swim jets powered by two pumps, giving the ideal counter-current for a relaxing swim. But that’s not all. The Mardi Gras also comes as standard with both Catalina’s Pro-Swim tether system and their Catalina Exercise equipment pack which includes rowing arms, bungies, straps and handles that allows the user to take part in several different forms of aquatic exercise. Standing at just over 1 metre tall and only requiring a 23amp power supply, the Mardi Gras is no more imposing and no more expensive to run than a standard hot tub, but offers much more functionality. Joining the Mardi Gras at the start of the year, and becoming the smallest swim spa within the ADL range, was the Solstice Leisure S-3900. With three seats and three river jets, this value for money addition gains a lot of interest from owners working within the tightest of budgets but who still want the maximum flexibility from their investment.

SWIM SPAS – ENTRY LEVEL DANUBE W-FLOW PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE WORKOUT OPTIONS Wellis have had great success with their swim spa range which has been enhanced regularly over recent years and their current entrylevel model – the Danube – has benefitted greatly from both design and technology improvements. The base model is now powered by an impressive W-Flow System where users can choose between six-speed levels from the slowest, most comfortable ‘floating’ setting, right up to the hardest exercise workout. Similar to a modern treadmill, users can predefine the swimming speeds one after another, so slower stages can be inserted between swimming sprints and custom workouts can be created. The width of the water flow within the W-Flow is only 50-60cm and the flow rate can be adjusted between 0.4-2.5 km/h. Inside the latest model, the appearance has been simplified, lines are much cleaner and more modern looking, plus the space has been optimised. Wellis have now included two massage seats which are located either side of the water flow system, meaning owners can use the Danube for professional swimming and to enjoy a relaxing massage too. Rear filter housings have also been placed at the end of the swimming area so that the active water area is more than 50cm wider than before. As with all models in the Wellis swim spa range, a more expensive Turbine option is also available and both Danube variants feature UV-C water sanitisers, LED lighting, Thermo cover and Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity plus an AquaSoul 4.1 sound system as standard, meaning owning, entertaining within or working out in either Danube is sure to be a lot easier and a lot more fun too.

WELLNESS
Relaxation For The Body And Soul
Once an experience to be enjoyed on holiday or by visiting a leisure club, spa or hotel, it seems that for many, the temptation to invest in saunas and steam plus other wet leisure wellness products for both commercial and increasingly domestic settings is now proving irresistible. Despite still being somewhat niche, it’s one that is growing and this issue we focus on the various options on offer that together make up the increasingly important wellness sector By Andrea Hartshorne
O
verall wellness encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing, so now, more than ever, it’s important to ensure that both sides are provided for with sauna and steam products able to offer that support. These products set the mind free to wander and unwind whilst the warmth permeates down to the body core to relax and soothe tired muscles and joints. Regardless of the type of wellness product your customers are looking to invest in, after the trying couple of years we’ve all endured, it's no surprise that interest continues to grow in these products, especially as more styles, varieties and materials become available. At this time of year – and with the colder weather well and truly with us – the thought of stepping into a warm and soothing sauna or steam room whilst the frost or snow glistens outside, is very appealing. And with advances in technology enabling smaller and more compact units to be developed, warming wellness is being made available to everyone, including those with a little less space. Although styles change and develop, all of these products are wonderfully flexible and can be tailored, personalised
and installed to achieve the perfection that today’s customers demand. The wellness and health side of our lives continues to grow in importance as we all aspire to improve ourselves and maintain a healthy glow! Whether there is the requirement for a single unit or a suite of wellness products, the variety and selection of units available means that every taste and every budget can be accommodated and this thriving side of the wet leisure industry will continue to grow both in homes and commercial settings and in this issue, we examine some of the current possibilities.
START A JOURNEY TO RECOVERY WITH A SUPERIOR WELLNESS SAUNA The appeal of saunas in general is that they cause reactions like those elicited by moderate exercise, such as sweating and an increased heart rate. An infrared sauna produces these results at lower temperatures than a regular sauna, which makes them accessible to people who can’t tolerate the heat of a conventional sauna. Not only does using a sauna make the user
feel good in themselves, there’s also many benefits associated with using one. Having access to a sauna has proven to impact a person’s health positively along with wellness, social connectivity and overall athletic performance. At Superior Wellness, a popular option is the Calor two-person sauna. Perfect for couples, it’s a compact solution that can be accommodated in a variety of locations, and one which won’t break the bank. As with all the infrared saunas in the Superior range, the Calor is built from carefully selected Hemlock wood which originates from Canada. The type of Hemlock used is ‘vertical grain’, as this can expand and contract without warping and cupping. Superior’s Hemlock timber is the best choice for a sauna – whether it would be for home or even commercial use. The larger, four-person Marisol sauna is great for any occasion and setting. Perfect for relaxation and unwinding after exercise or for hosting friends, this sauna will leave both owners and those in their company in awe. Fitness athlete, Ryan Terry, recently shared his journey about using his brand new Marisol Sauna to support his preparation for the 2021 Arnold Sports Festival UK, with Ryan’s physio explaining how an infrared sauna is a key part of an athlete’s recovery process due thanks to their ability to relax muscles and soothe aches/pains in both muscles and joints, as well as help with the increase in circulation, oxygen and blood flow around the body.

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS
Precision Control Of Water Quality And So Much More! Reliable, essential and increasingly high tech, dosing pumps and control systems are the unsung heroes in any water treatment system as they quietly go about the business of ensuring accurate amounts of chemicals are delivered to the water within swimming pools and spas. Convenient and easy to use, the automation they provide has made the life of owners and operators that much simpler and we roundup what’s available By Jon Wadeson
S
ystems that expertly control water treatment are a must in today’s commercial market and are also sought after in ever increasing numbers in the growing and demanding consumer market place too. So what are the benefits of automatic dosing and control systems? The biggest has to be safety. To have equipment installed room that recognises, reacts and then treats frequently changing bather loads and ensures that water users are protected from horrors such as cryptosporidium or giardia is quite frankly priceless. From a ‘nasties’ point of view, perfectly regulated pool water is the first line of defence in providing a safe and trouble free wet leisure experience for bathers and offers peace of mind to owners. It also ensures swimmers skin and eyes are not irritated by spent chlorine or water that has an out of balance pH. Any guesswork is removed out of water treatment process, allowing owners and operators to spend less time testing and guessing, leaving them to pass the responsibility over to the automatic mechanical marvels that efficiently take control. Some automated management can be extended beyond just water supervision and anything from maintenance to lighting, heating to even audio and entertainment systems can now be controlled. In many cases, remote operation is available through a smart phone, tablet or computer so that the pool or spa is primed and ready for action well before the user has even donned their swim gear. As you’ll see, today’s systems are uncomplicated and user-friendly meaning that the most technically unsavvy person can skilfully ensure perfect water management and beyond at the touch of a button or swipe of a screen.
VERDER – A PASSION FOR PUMPS AND DOSING SYSTEMS Verder Liquids manufactures pumps, mixers and systems which are distributed through 27 offices via a worldwide network of distributors, which ensures a local service and on-time deliveries.

DOSING PUMPS & CONTROL SYSTEMS ZODIAC’S PH AND CHLOR EXPERT FROM LIGHTHOUSE The Zodiac pH and Chlor Expert really do take the worry out of chemical dosing and are perfect for domestic situations up to a maximum of 150m3, removing the need to handle chemicals around the poolside. The very simple to operate control panel offers the end user an easy view backlit LCD screen interface which allows them to increase and decrease dosing levels as required. Of course, it is always important to understand that an auto-dosing system does need maintenance and probes need to be calibrated to ensure that levels correspond with the actual pool water. However, with this taken into account then the pH Expert will reliably dose liquid acids or alternatively alkali through a peristaltic pump into the pool return filtration line, ensuring that the water balance is kept stable. Use of the Redox based Chlor expert is just as simple with the concentration similarly adjusted on the front panel of the unit, also using a clear view backlit LCD screen. Sodium Hypochlorite is then fed into the pool return filtration line by the peristaltic pump. Both units have a maximum dose rate of 1.5l/hr and are controlled by a configurable ‘OFA’ three-level over-feed alarm. All the necessary saddle clamps, sensors and feed pipes are supplied with both systems, making installation easy for any pool technician. These entry level inexpensive chemical dosing units would enhance any pool owners plant room, whilst removing the day to day worry of handling chemicals.

Water Filtration For A Wet Leisure Nation Some of the most important products that lie at the centre of any modern and efficient water cleansing system are those associated with filtration. What was for a while a fairly uninspiring sector has seen a number of innovations over recent years and filtration products, in their many guises, are now viewed as essential for providing effective water management and cost savings. This issue, we showcase just some of the available filtration solutions By Jon Wadeson

hen it comes to filtration options for the water circulating in UK pools and spas, there really is a wide range of options available for an equally wide range of operating environments. Often found hiding behind the scenes, and previously regarded as somewhat low tech in their operation, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of recent innovations which have improved solutions for what is without doubt, a critical part of any wet leisure set up. As a result of the advances made, some products have become more flexible, others are now more durable and some are reducing the amount of water that is used. All of these help to lower operating costs, so naturally, the developments are welcomed by both the trade and even more so by the owners and operators of pools and spas. With numerous options already available, combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer, so this issue we highlight just some of the current crop of filtration options for installations across our increasingly wet leisure embracing nation.
TPF’S CERAMIFLO MEMBRANES PROVIDE ULTRAFILTRATION Danish company Liqtech have provided membrane filtration technology to a multitude of industries for many years and more recently they have pioneered a pool filtration system. Recognising the potential for microfiltration, Total Pool Filtration (TPF) established an agreement with Liqtech to develop the UK market under brand name Ceramiflo. A three-year period of research and development has allowed TPF to make some improvements to the operation and the maintenance of the Danish system and fully automated membrane cleaning has been integrated into their package. Ceramiflo membranes have a 3mu pour

removes more dirt from the pool and that dirt is frequently removed from the membranes, leading to a drop in chlorine usage. Finally, since the membranes are cleaned mainly with air, backwash water usage is reduced by up to 60%.

size which consistently filters out 85% of all 2-3mu particulates. This is an extremely robust strategy in the removal of crypto sized particulates which are understood to be 4-6mu in size. The membranes are made of silicon carbide which is extremely durable and resistant to degradation. This compares very favourable against traditional filters which require costly media changes and refurbishments. There are currently two Ceramiflo systems installed in the UK and a sixmembrane system is due to be installed in Trafford this autumn. The systems are entirely automatic and are monitored over the internet as part of the Ceramiflo service contract. Staff intervention is now simplified with no need to operate and backwash their filters. Ceramiflo is very compact so when old plant is due for replacement, they can often slot into the plant room with the original filters remaining. Furthermore, they are often installed seamlessly with no interruption or disruption to bathing. As a smart choice for pool operators there are some big gains to be had in terms of sustainability. Ceramiflo
Earlier this year, Evoqua Water Technologies introduced the Defender FP-Series regenerative media filtration (RMF) system which has been designed to deliver maximum performance for swim schools, health clubs and other small to medium size commercial aquatics venues. The next generation Defender® FP series targets smaller pools than the original Defender® line, bringing the same superior performance, quality and product support to a new segment of pool owners who are committed to providing their guests with exceptional water quality with the lowest operational costs. Owners of these smaller facilities can achieve significant operational savings as compared to conventional sand filtration, including up to 90% less water wasted in backwashing, 50% less energy consumption, and 30% less chemical usage – while achieving unparalleled water quality and clarity. In addition, the amount of space required for the Defender FP-Series filtration systems is approximately 75% less than the space required for conventional filtration systems. Designed with advanced modelling tools and Evoqua’s Defender FP-Series regenerative media filtration (RMF) system has been designed for small to medium size commercial aquatics venues

SANISTREAM™ – SETTING THE STANDARD IN HOMES AND HOLIDAY LET ALIKE Since prototypes of Darlly Europe’s SaniStream™ Direct Line Filtration system were first shown at SPATEX back in 2018, the revolutionary and innovative solution to hot tub disinfection has gone on to become an ubiquitous industry standard. The SaniStream™ Direct Line Filtration system comprises an adjustable in-line bromine or chlorine feeder called the SpaPod™. This fits into a redesigned and exclusively adapted high quality Darlly filter to form a complete integrated hot tub filtration and disinfectant dosing solution in one. The SaniStream™ Direct Line Filtration system gives consumers the benefits of a highly effective adjustable chlorine or bromine dosing feeder which, unlike a floating dispenser, does not need to be removed from the spa when bathers are using it. In fact, it is dosing disinfectant at precisely the time it’s needed most – when

people are actually in the hot tub. Similarly, again unlike a floating dispenser, the owner doesn’t need to remember to put it back in the spa after all the bathers have left. However, the greatest impact made by the product has undoubtedly been in the holiday let sector. When the infamous HSG282 regulations were introduced in early 2017, thousands of spas already installed and in use out in the field in holiday parks, lodges, caravans and cottages became non-compliant
For new filter installations, an OC-1 filter is a great choice. Available exclusively in the UK from Certikin, there are a range of filters on offer that come supplied complete with the lightweight media. The filters are specially designed to work in perfect harmony with the media and complement the advantages OC-1 Filtration Media provides. Unlike traditional methods that use entrapment, OC-1 Filtration Media works through settlement which means that the debris settles within the cells of OC-1 throughout the entire bed rather than being trapped on top of the media. This British manufactured solution has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media such as sand and glass with OC-1, it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system, filter with a constant flow and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard. As well as being popular across domestic installations, OC-1 Media also excels in the commercial sector. The Certikin SLX range of commercial filters are the workhorse of a commercial pool and with a wide range covering sizes from 1.05m through to 3.00m, and options for laterals and nozzles with various pressure ranges and accessories, any
POOL WELCOMES INNOVATIVE CERAMIFLO TECHNOLOGY
Total Pool Filtration have been actively installing and operating Ceramiflo for six years in the UK. The technology is tried and tested with six installed UK systems and over 70 systems worldwide. The 3-micron microfiltration system has been successfully retrofitted in some very restrictive plant rooms and generally without disruption to pool operation. The system can be stripped down and brought in through single access doorways if needed as they did at Pontardawe, Stretford Sports Village and here at Walsall Gala Pool. In all these cases, the old plant has been isolated and remains in-situ with the new microfiltration installed nearby. This can be done in many plant
68 December 2021 SPN 67-70_SPN_December_21_Filtration_Rev.indd 68
rooms because the footprint is so compact, being just 20% as compared to traditional sand filter footprints. When the old filters can remain, this means that the changeover is usually a seamless operation with the pool circulation being down for just a few hours whilst glued connections are allowed to cure. The straightforward installation means that there are no disruptive civils works required and the pool can remain open to public, so these factors have a very positive impact on the overall cost and feasibility of filter refurbishment works. Total Pool Filtration are gathering data at key sites to demonstrate savings in
operational costs and are seeing some very encouraging savings in water, chlorine consumption and in energy which of course is of massive importance during these times where reducing
carbon impact is paramount. Reports are available from Swim England upon request that demonstrate Ceramiflo performance at Stretford Sports Village under Trafford Leisure.

FILTRATION FOR RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL SETTINGS, WATERCO HAVE THE ANSWER Waterco produces a range of Micron fibreglasswound filter vessels available in both side and top mount versions suitable for both the residential and commercial swimming pool markets. Waterco’s fibreglass wound filters are available from 20” to 2.5m in diameter and are made using the latest available filament winding machine. This machine faultlessly winds continuous strands of high quality fibreglass filament under controlled tension, creating a seamless one-piece vessel with refined consistency and superior quality. Fibreglass winding further strengthens the filter vessel structure so it can withstand a working pressure of up to 10 bar. In addition, the company’s proprietary technology and advanced manufacturing capabilities have enabled it to incorporate sight glasses and large manholes into highpressure commercial filters. Waterco’s Micron vertical filters are either fitted with its patented ‘fish tail’ lateral system or for commercial applications the ‘fish bone’ lateral system. These systems provide uniform flow for both filtering and backwashing, ensuring maximum performance through the media bed. The conventional star lateral arrangement found in many filters are not as effective as

To overcome this, Waterco’s patented lateral configurations eliminates any ‘dead legs’ by improving water flow distribution through the filter bed… ensuring the highest standards in filtration and superior backwashing.
NEW FILTER REMOVES THE HEADACHES FOR HOLIDAY PARK HOT TUBS
A new, disposable hot tub filter has been developed by Spaeuro and Magnum Filters specifically aimed at the holiday park industry
70 December 2021 SPN 67-70_SPN_December_21_Filtration_Rev.indd 70
A new hot tub filter has been developed by Spaeuro and Magnum Filters specifically aimed at the holiday park industry. The innovation came about while exhibiting at the UK’s Holiday Park show in 2018 when, on countless occasions, park managers expressed their view that a major headache for park staff was cleaning the hot tub filters to comply with safety standards. The cost of labour, chemicals and lack of workspace were all highlighted, as was the concern about the reliability of the cleaning process. This got Peter Hogg of Magnum Filters and Jon Hicks from Spaeuro thinking. The result is a filter that doesn’t need to be cleaned, but can be disposed of after one week’s use. To achieve this, very inexpensive design was needed. A filter was designed that consisted of three parts. The bottom holder, that stays in the spa, a removable disposable cartridge filter, and where necessary, a top cap to seal off the cartridge. The design has been registered in all countries that Spaeuro and Magnum Filters intend to market it in. The idea was pitched to a large holiday park group with multiple locations who carried out a 12 month trial. Continuous
monitoring and water sampling proved the filter could achieve and exceed all the requirements, with no reduction in filtration performance. The filter has now been adopted at all of their sites. Conscious of the short lifespan of the product, the filter has been designed with minimal materials, thus reducing any environmental impact. The cartridge also compacts to a fraction of its original size for disposal. The filters are capable of accepting any ‘in-filter’ dosing dispenser, although a new bromide dispenser that fits into the plastic lid of the holder is being trialled.

OPINION
How Good A Year Was That? “2021, like every year, was ushered in with a host of predictions. In the Chinese calendar it was the year of the Ox forecasting good fortune and hard work. The UN designated 2021 as International Year of Peace and Trust and the UK media saw 2021 as the year that vaccines would save our summer, or Easter, or sports event… or Christmas, but how did it pan out?” asks Jamie Adams of Golden Coast in this last Opinion piece of the year
T
he thing that comes most immediately to mind when I think of the beginning of 2021 is a trump. Not the last few days of the Donald’s presidency, but Joe Wicks blasting off with his live mega trump at the start of his first online PT session of the year. It might have been a sign that the year may not go exactly as planned.
and wellness, it would be a reasonable expectation for a good percentage of that to filter down to our industry. Judging from what we hear as a distributor, it’s clear to see the industry has had a good year and it certainly looks like there are still some good times to come but it’s always worth considering squirreling away some of your hard-earned profits for that rainy day ahead.
A YEAR FULL OF SURPRISES The first COVID-19 vaccine had been granted regulatory approval on 2 December 2020 and by mid February 2021 over 17million people had been jabbed. People weren’t inoculated nor were they vaccinated. They queued up for their jab. They were jabbed. Perhaps the idea was to make it more popular. It seems to have worked. It has become the most successful mass jabbing in the country’s history and for many people, after the government’s rather shaky record on lockdowns and advice as to whether to wear a mask or not, that in itself has come as something of a surprise. Of course surprises come in two flavours: good and bad. We were promised that the jab would be our get-out-of-jail-free card but, although it has made a tremendous difference to hospital admissions and transmission rates, almost a year into the programme many of us are still wearing a mask and many are still working from home. The year hasn’t turned out like we thought it would.
IS IT WARM IN HERE? Climate change is running COVID a close second for ‘crisis of the year’. A common factor is that both have the potential to significantly impact everyone who lives on the planet. Another common factor is that nations are reacting to both challenges in very different ways and with differing levels of success. Greta Thunberg described COP26 as “Blah,
POOLS, SPAS AND WELLNESS blah, blah” but she also made the point that, “Many are asking what it’ll take for people in power to wake up. But let’s be clear − they’re already awake. They know exactly what they’re doing to maintain business as usual”. From our perspective at Golden Coast we have seen climate change and COVID accelerate a move towards many products our industry has been pushing for some time now such as heat pumps, energy efficient pool pumps, solar powered products and more efficient filtration. We have also been looking more closely at ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), which helps guide our policies on issues such as our carbon footprint, how we work with staff and interact within our local community plus how we put in place internal practices that lead to effective decision making. ESG will soon be standard practice for all businesses.
SAVE, SAVE, SPEND Although there are varying figures bandied about, the Financial Times reckoned that post lockdown, Britons were preparing to splash the cash and are on course to have amassed an extra £180bn in their bank accounts. That money comes from holidays not taken and people only commuting as far as the spare bedroom or kitchen table. With such low interest rates as we have experienced for some time now, equity release has seen a 30-40% increase this year and with a nation more in tune with home, health

The anticipation of getting together again at Coventry in February is a bit like a child waiting for Christmas morning. It just can’t come quickly enough. SPATEX promises to be a fantastic opportunity for the industry to spend a few quality days together exchanging news and views and generally enjoying the chance to relax amongst friends. It is also the time that we get to share the Wet Leisure Industry Survey Report with everyone in the industry. The astonishing thing is that we appear to have had a great year against a background of issues ranging from lockdowns and stock shortages to price increases and shipping delays, but that’s just from our own experience and from talking to our friends in the industry. The Wet Leisure Survey brings together facts and figures from all types of businesses and from all over the country. Now in its eleventh year, the survey shows us all how the industry as a whole has been fairing and where the best opportunities for future growth might be. If you haven’t taken the survey yet can I urge you to do so as the more responses we get the more accurate the picture is. There is a link to the survey on the home page of the Golden Coast website.
AND FINALLY… 2021 has been a voyage of discovery for us all and I think I would be right in saying that as 2021 draws to a close we’re all pretty tired and looking forward to a well-earned break so I hope the year has been good to you and can I wish you and yours compliments of the season.
