After 12 months of ups and downs, we’ve finally made it to December and that means our last issue of what’s been yet another roller coaster of a year. Casting my mind back to the start of 2022 and to the SPATEX event in Coventry in particular, the mood was pretty buoyant and there was actually plenty of optimism around. That’s not to say this year has been all doom and gloom – far from it –but it certainly hasn’t panned out as many expected and there’s definitely been plenty of unforeseen twists along the way.

Having recently attended the Piscine Global Europe exhibition in France – the world’s largest event for wet leisure – I’m pleased and somewhat relieved to say that despite the seemingly constant negatives portrayed on virtually every TV news channel or website, the mood from manufacturers and the industry as a whole was one of general positivity again. There are certainly a number of new products, either available now or coming out soon, which is never a bad thing – especially if they save time, money or ideally both. Some of them are included within this issue and I expect to see a lot more filtering through and making it onto our pages over the coming months too.

and inside we’ve a feature which explores the latest innovations which are leading to improved performance and a reduction in the usage of water and therefore costs.

Moving away from the plant room and looking at the more glamorous end of the product spectrum, in this seasonal issue we highlight some soothing sauna and steam products, wellness items which are perfect for both the mind and body, especially during these colder months. We’ve some great value for money entrylevel swim and party spas too, products that are proving to be popular with many families, especially during the trying times we’ve all experienced over the last three or so years.

Safety equipment also goes under the spotlight again as we take a closer look at a range of options which are marketed on the strength of reducing incidents and accidents, both in and around wet leisure products.

As if that wasn’t enough, we highlight all the winners from the 2022 EUSA Awards, plus we have a piece on enclosure manufacturer Alukov group and their recent investment, expansion and plans for the future. We also feature Artesian Spas UK who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year and look at the journey the company has had over that period plus some of the innovations they offer. Also, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams provides his opinion on our everchanging world whilst Luke Griffiths from the STA takes a look back over 2022 and also at the year ahead too.

As always, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our roundup of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here the UK and further afield.

So, with everything covered, that’s this issue’s content roundup complete – I hope there’s something of interest for each and every one of our readers, no matter what sector you are working within.

After such a challenging year, hopefully there will be time for all to chill out, spend some time with family and friends and of course, enjoy reading this latest issue!

So, with that in mind, and focusing on this issue, inside you’ll find our annual look at dosing pumps and control systems, automatic products which quietly go about their business behind the scenes as they play their own, crucial part in a safe and efficient water treatment system, and by doing so, help to make the lives of pool and spa owners that little bit easier.

Other products, which are also nearly always hidden away from view too, are those that deal with the filtration of water in pools and spas,

I hope you have a great festive break – after all, we’ve definitely all earned it this year! See you all in the New Year.

Whether you’re a distributor, manufacturer, management company or an engineer, if you work in the wet leisure sector it’s time to have your say.

The annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey – created and hosted by Golden Coast, and in association with organisations such as BSPF, ISPE, SPATA,

BISHTA and industry trade press – is available now for a limited time. For the past 12 years Golden Coast has gathered feedback from around the country to help build a picture of the challenges and opportunities being faced by those in the industry. Not only is the survey a tool to assess which products

have done well, but it also acts as an important gauge on what could be next for businesses over the following 12 months.

“2022 has been a challenging year economically, what with the energy crisis, plus the ongoing effects of the Ukraine war and Brexit,” said Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. “We don’t know what the future will hold, but the survey is an incredible tool for revealing trends in products and customer demand, and can be used in helping organisations to plan ahead. The more people that fill it out, the better understanding we gain of how the industry is faring. The input really is invaluable,

and the survey only takes a few minutes to complete.”

The Wet Leisure Industry Survey is completely anonymous, and responses are included in a free in-depth report packed with exclusive insights and statistics that companies can use when planning their strategy for 2023.

The 2022 Wet Leisure Industry Survey can be taken online or to request a paper version of the survey, call the number below. Once compiled, the survey report results will be available to view online and at SPATEX 2023.

CUMBRIAN TOWN EDGES CLOSER TO GETTING A MUCH CALLED FOR POOL

Plans linked to a new multimillion pound health hub for Millom in Cumbria have been revealed and they include a much called for swimming pool.

Mike Starkie, the Mayor of Copeland has welcomed progress with the project. He said: “We know that residents of Millom are hugely supportive of a new swimming pool and leisure hub for the town and everybody linked to this process has been working incredibly hard to move the vision forward.”

It is anticipated that the new leisure hub would be open to the community all year round, and would attract in the region of 260,000 visitors every year.

FUNDING SECURED FOR WELSH SWIMMING POOL

A successful bid for Welsh Government funding will see the swimming pool at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre and nearby skate park undergo refurbishment costing around £5.3m.

Following the announcement, the County Borough Council is working with international leisure facilities developer Alliance Leisure and business services company Red Start to redesign the pool and relocate the skate park closer to the centre.

“We understand and share people’s frustration about the delay in reopening the pool,” said Council Leader Cllr Geraint Thomas. “But the refurbishment – which must also meet Welsh Government’s decarbonisations targets –could not be paid for by the Council alone.

“Collectively, the redevelopment of the pool and changing rooms and brand new skate park will provide access to more modern facilities to help improve health and wellbeing, and will also attract new users,” he added.

NIVEKO Pools – Maximum Enjoyment With Minimal Environmental Impact

Private swimming pools are fast becoming an inseparable part of modern family life. That’s great news for manufacturers such as NIVEKO, but the company are always keen to ensure their products have a minimal environmental impact and actually add more than just fun and relaxation to the immediate location.

For example, swimming pools installed in built-up areas benefit their surroundings and the environment. The air temperature is rising as a result of global warming, and this is especially noticeable in cities during the summer. Every body of water, from which water vapour rises into the air, reduces the temperature and increases air humidity – an important part of any urban development. Private pools also have a positive impact on the surrounding vegetation, which subsequently retains water in the landscape.

The company’s production processes are set up to guarantee maximum use of the material, by combining state-of-the-art production equipment and a production plan perfectly designed down to the

finest detail. All excess material is collected and subsequently recycled by a specialist company. The high quality of the High-Tech polymer used to make NIVEKO pools means that reprocessing is easy and energy-efficient. The resulting product is known as regranulate, which is used in other branches of industry.

One indisputable advantage of NIVEKO pools is the option for passive wintering, meaning that the water can be left in the pool during the winter. It doesn’t need to be drained, so no water is wasted – the owner saves money and therefore helps to protect the environment. This eco-friendly solution is a great example of how smart ideas make it possible to reduce the impact that normal use of the pool has on nature. Owners can therefore enjoy their pool without worrying about the environment. NIVEKO

Costs Of New Newcastle Facility Increase Dramatically

Councillors have approved an additional £4m to meet the rising construction costs of a new leisure centre in Newcastle.

Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet were asked to approve an enhanced financial package after the costs of the centre in West Denton increased from £22.3m to £26m.

A progress report put the additional cost down to general inflation and extra facilities due to the council’s public consultation.

The swimming pool will be enlarged from six to eight lanes; it will have spectator seating for galas; sauna and steam rooms; the library will have an additional quiet area and the children’s play area will be enlarged.

Cabinet Member for a Vibrant City, Cllr Lesley Storey, who is responsible for leisure, said:

“We consulted widely with residents and partners and listened very carefully. As a result, we added in new features like a bigger swimming pool, spectator seating, sauna, and steam rooms.

“Coupled with inflation running at 10%, the costs of the project have gone up – like every other construction project in the country. However, we remain committed to building a leisure centre that people feel excited and proud about in the Outer West.”

The report also revealed the centre will not be open by summer 2024 as initially hoped. It’s now expected to be open by December 2024.

December 2024.

It is hoped further funding from the council, Sport England, and a contribution from GLL, who will run the leisure centre, will meet the new £26m bill.

COMPETITION POOL INCLUDED IN PLANS FOR KENT LEISURE CENTRE

Plans for a new leisure facility for Gravesend in Kent have been given the green light after a preferred scheme was chosen. The new Cascades leisure centre will be built to the highest environmental standards while providing regional standard sports facilities alongside fun activities for families.

Gravesham Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed that it would use a range of proven approaches, and will aim for a ‘Passivhaus’ approach to deliver a net-zeroready building, which would be built on the site of the current Cascades leisure centre in Gravesend.

Wet leisure facilities at the new centre are to include a leisure water area with slash pad and flumes, a 25m eight lane swimming pool capable of hosting regional swimming events, a 17m x 7m adjacent learner/teaching pool, a pool-side sauna/steam room plus spectator seating/ viewing area for the main pool.

POOL REOPENING PLAN AGREED BY SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL

A £400,000 programme of works to allow the main pool at The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre in Shrewsbury to reopen has been agreed by Shropshire Council.

The main pool was closed in July this year after routine inspections identified that corrosion had caused ceiling panels and ventilation units to become unsafe.

The works will see damaged and eroded pipes and ducting from the airflow management system removed from the roof space over the pool, and new ducting installed outside of the building and over the spectator area, where it is more easily accessible.

This will also be an opportunity to remove unused light fittings, walkways and ceiling panels from above the main pool area.

Ocea UK – In Pole Position

Ocea UK hosted their Annual Seminar at the impressive Williams F1 Conference Centre in October. The presentation was lead by Alan Thorne, Director of Ocea UK, and was followed by informative talks on their popular automatic pool cover systems by the Ocea UK Sales and Technical teams.

There were also special guest presentations from representatives from Binder on their topselling HydroStar counter-current system and Starline on their sleek one-piece pools – both had flown in especially to be there for the day. These presentations were well received by current dealers and industry professionals looking to expand product portfolios. All potential dealers are carefully selected by Ocea UK on an individual basis to ensure product exclusivity.

Attendees also got a sneak peak at Ocea UK’s new products that were officially launched at the seminar. Each has been given the new ‘Ocea UK Approved’ stamp and join the existing family of Ocea, Binder and Starline products. These new products were very well received and included a cordless pool cleaner, Aguapure salt chlorinator and Vertical X heat pump.

Commenting on the event, Nigel Brawn of Cornwall Pools said: “It was a very informative day and I was very impressed with the venue and how well everything had been organised. It was great to learn about the new products first hand, it was helpful to find out the advantages these products have over others available on the market and I am excited to add these to our product offering.”

After lunch guests explored the incredible venue with a tour of the Williams F1 Museum, which houses the largest private collection of Formula 1 cars in the world. This was followed by guests heading up to the Esports Lounge where they had the opportunity to race against their colleagues on F1 Simulators.

Growing Energy Crisis Puts More Than 100 Pools Under Threat

Swim England has warned more than 100 pools are under threat of closure or a reduction in services in the next six months due to the sector’s growing energy crisis.

The dire forecast comes as new figures from ukactive predict that without Government intervention, large numbers of public sector leisure facilities are unlikely to make it through to next spring.

A consultation with national public leisure operators asked ukactive members to risk assess the current threat to their facilities and the findings revealed that 40% of council areas are at risk of losing their swimming pools and leisure centres.

Three quarters of council areas are also classified as ‘unsecure’, meaning there is risk of the closure of leisure centres and/or reduced services before 31 March 2024.

Industry leaders are calling for immediate support to avoid significant closures – support that cannot wait until the outcome of the Energy Bill Relief Scheme review from the Department for

Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which will not be implemented until April 2023.

Jane Nickerson, Swim England Chief Executive, said it would be an ‘absolute tragedy’ if the situation was allowed to deteriorate further.

She added: “Pools and leisure centres are vital parts of the community, improving the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.

“They help reduce pressure on the NHS and social care system, saving more than £350m a year –as well as being a place where people of all ages can learn a skill that could one day save their life.

“However, they are particularly vulnerable to the rising energy prices as we are seeing now with increased closures and service reductions.

“Our fear is that more than 100 pools are under threat in the next six months.”

National Charity Launches New Lifesaving Award

The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has launched its brandnew National Lifesaving Academy (NLA).The NLA programme is designed to provide skills for life and includes beach, pool and open water elements. It is the first programme of its kind for the UK and Ireland that recognises prior learning for vocational lifeguard courses, officially acknowledging the skill development and growth of young lifesavers as well as addressing the national shortage of lifeguards.

In 2011 the charity marked a historical moment as it launched a Survive & Save programme to give young people the opportunity to learn vital lifesaving skills. Over a decade later, the charity has adapted the programme, developing elements further to ensure those who take the award have the latest skills and knowledge around lifesaving and to recognise the valuable contribution that lifesavers make in society.

The brand new National

Lifesaving Academy will be run by clubs and leisure centres across the UK and Ireland and RLSS UK aims to ensure that it is an award which is accessible to everyone.

Lee Heard, Charity Director at RLSS UK said: “We have worked closely with lifesaving instructors, clubs, and commercial leisure partners to design a flexible programme that can be delivered to more lifesavers and as a result, allow more people to enjoy water safely.

“We knew that we wanted to make the award more accessible to young people from all backgrounds and households, and this is why we have ensured that the price of the award remains affordable. We also wanted the skills obtained in the award to be formally recognised to allow career progression within the leisure industry.”

New ‘Ocea UK Approved’ Products Introduced

Ocea UK are proud to introduce their new Ocea UK Approved launch of handpicked premium products to their range which were officially unveiled at their Annual Seminar which was held at the impressive Williams F1 Conference Centre, Wantage back in October.

The new products were very well received, and Director of Ocea UK, Alan Thorne said: “After spending a lot of time researching products we feel would be right for the UK market we have sourced a unique collection of products that have so many advantages over those already available on the market. We have to think about the climate in this country, advances in technology and the increasing cost of energy that everyone is very much conscious of right now. We are so confident in these products that we have given them our seal of approval and made them ‘Ocea UK Approved’.”

Included in this range is the Vertical X Heat pump, which is suitable for use in all seasons, provides up to three times more energy saving than other models and displays real time power consumption.

There is also a new pool cleaner which has patented i-Mapping technology – the six in built sensors and intelligent software send it on a straight cleaning path and it is completely cordless!

Another new products is the Aguapure salt chlorinator system where salt is contained within the unit in the plant room, resulting in no salt taste in the pool water or annoying chlorine smells. Easy maintenance and set up means owners can produce healthy crystal-clear pool water without traditional dosing methods.

Discover SCP’s Extensive Catalogue Of Spare Parts

Maintaining or repairing everyday objects extends the life of products, thus promoting the circular economy. By giving a second life to broken items, consumers limit the amount of waste produced and help preserve the planet’s resources.

For several years SCP has been providing after-sales service for partner brands and has thus developed an expertise but also a large stock of spare parts.

Always seeking to offer value-added services to its customers and in order to respond to an increasingly eco-responsible demand but also to accelerate this movement, SCP has created in the centre of Europe, a warehouse entirely dedicated to spare parts with manufacturer’s parts but also replacement parts.

The Lyon-based warehouse contains more than 180,000 items in stock for the biggest brands in the pool and spa world. Brands such as Hayward, Pentair, AstralPool, Maytronics and Polaris are featured for swimming pools, whilst Wellis, Beachcomber, Balboa and Gecko are present for spas and hot tubs.

To help pool and spa professionals find repair and replacement solutions, SCP has developed a catalogue featuring hundreds of pages of items, with all the exploded views of the products and their dimensions.

This is available online to facilitate searches by keyword, supplier product code, product type by category etc.

SCP’s warehouse in Lyon is committed to preparing and dispatching orders within the day, with express delivery in 24 hours or economy delivery in 2/3 days.

Finally, the company’s Pool360 application, currently being deployed throughout Europe, allows the trade to order these parts in just two clicks.

UK-based Origin Aqua chose Piscine Global Europe to launch its market leading, chemical free, Mineral+Biome® filtration system into the European market. This modular, automated pool filtration system, which uses 50% less energy and generates 50% less wastewater than traditional filtration systems, can be fitted to virtually any new build or existing swimming pool, and according to the company, renders the use of chlorine or other disinfection chemicals obsolete.

Origin Aqua has spent three years developing the Mineral+Biome®, which, in addition to operating without chemicals or aquatic plants, includes innovative features such as IoT touchscreen automation, air assisted auto-backwash, flow/pressure sensing and a modular fully recyclable onepiece filter housing.

Notably, in June 2022, Origin Aqua published ground-breaking scientific

research in Nature Magazine (the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journal), which unequivocally proves its filter technology destroys common pathogens found in pools, such as e-coli, Pseudomas and Enterococci via the process of ‘biological predation’ and key nutrient starvation.

Origin Aqua CEO, Andrew Cox, said: “Our leading scientific research proves that the beneficial bacteria in our filter sanitise water to safe levels without the need for disinfection chemicals. This cutting-edge research runs contrary to the perceived wisdom of the

swimming pool industry, which continues to predominantly use environmentally damaging chlorine. Increasingly pool customers are rightly asking for alternative solutions which provide sustainable, chemical free bathing water, whilst lowering the environmental and financial cost of pool ownership.”

While the product is initially aimed at the top 20% of swimming pool consumers, the payback on its technology can be as low as five years for indoor pools and seven years for outdoor pools.

The Skimmer Unik from AstralPool is an innovative skimmer designed to integrate so harmoniously into a pool that owners will almost forget it’s there!

Designed in ABS under European quality standards and featuring a 5-year warranty, this new skimmer fits seamlessly into any type of pool. It was developed by AstralPool to offer pool owners greater flexibility in the selection of colours for the housing, covers and decorative faceplates.

The top cover comes in four colours (white, beige, grey and anthracite) and up to five colours to customise the skimmer mouth (plus there’s also a stainless steel finish). This means for a pool with a dark stone exterior and a light pool shell, the owner can choose different colours for the top cover and

Introducing The Velocity Performance Control System

New for 2023 is the addition of a performance control system for HeatForm’s Velocity countercurrent swimming machine. The system is designed to offer swimmers the ability to use the Velocity as a training tool with the ability to set full routines of interval swimming.

The system gives each user the option to programme their own training plan or several training plans with different periods of intensity. The first option is to start with a warm up, bringing the machine to the desired speed slowly and allowing users time to settle into the pool. Then there are three further swim speed options allowing the adjustment of time interval and speed, a sprint or an endurance pace can simply be set to alternate allowing full flexibility. These options then can be set into a repeat mode for the desired number of sets, allowing the user full flexibility in their training regime.

The Velocity Performance Control System is fully backward compatible and can be installed onto all machines that have already left the factory. It is an optional extra upgrade to the standard system and allows external screens to be added into the pool hall to display the data on a visible wall so the swimmer can see at a glance where they are up to and the speeds they are achieving.

Not only does the system offer swim speed and timing, but optional extras such as pool hall lighting and water temperature can be seen and adjusted from the touch screen too!

the embellisher resulting in unprecedented looks.

If the idea is for the skimmer to blend even more seamlessly into its surroundings, this new skimmer is the perfect solution.

The design makes it possible to remove the top part of the cover and insert a tile or slab of the same material as the surround. This creates a more unified and elegant aesthetic for the entire pool.

Discretion is another prominent feature of this product, which is achieved with the exclusive curved shape of the weir.

This intermediate solution between a float and a traditional weir reduces the annoying flapping noise that is so characteristic of traditional skimmers, bringing unparalleled tranquility to the bathing experience.

Finally, convenient cleaning and maintenance is another unique feature of this new skimmer.

The tank for impurities has been enlarged meaning less frequent cleaning. In addition, access to the filter is simplified to avoid the need to touch the cold water and make it easier to check the water level. AstralPool

Manufactured at the company’s Ozone Centre of Excellence in the UK, the new system offers simple, safe and easy to operate technology. Recognised as a highly effective water treatment solution, compact and modular, the triogen® O3Clear system can be used in many sectors, including residential and semi commercial pools and spas, aquariums, recreational ponds, water jets and fountains, and is the latest triogen® system to offer easy installation and instant operation.

Ozone’s powerful oxidising properties make it one of the most effective natural technologies to disinfect water, eliminating bacteria, viruses and organic contaminants to provide purer, clearer water. Ozone treatment leaves no chemical residues behind, making it compatible with any type of pool and control room.

The launch provides ozone water treatment in a simple and easy to use package. Its ‘Plug and Play’ feature ensures that all that’s needed is to connect the pipework, provide a power supply and it’s ready to use – a real breakthrough compared to existing ozone generators!

GC Hub Puts Pool Owners In Control

Keeping on top of a number of pool systems, such as lighting, filtration, heating, and water treatment, can often be inefficient and end up costing more time and money than needed.

In answer to this issue, Golden Coast created the GC Hub Control Panel, an innovative solution – created in-house at the Golden Coast HQ in Devon – that lets customers easily operate equipment from a single control point.

The Golden Coast team is continuously working on GC Hub to develop new innovations to meet ever-changing customer demands and technological requirements.

“A key idea behind GC Hub is that it’s an easily scalable product,” said Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “Whether it’s domestic customers using it for pool management, or it’s in commercial operations with multiple pools, we can build a control panel to match.

“The customer and our team sit down to get a good understanding of the equipment that needs to be controlled and figure the exact specifications needed. The engineers are then able to build a unique GC Hub that is made bespoke to requirements. Company’s branding can even be added to the front panel for a unit that’s customised inside and out.”

Even when designed and installed, the customer benefits from a future-proof control panel that can be upgraded thanks to the system’s modular nature.

“We wanted something that works in the way each individual customer wants to work,” said Adam. “Some people prefer touch screens, some prefer buttons, some prefer remote control and all can be easily accommodated into our designs. And of course, the GC team are always on hand to offer peace of mind through ongoing friendly, expert technical support.”

Hot Spring® Spas – the world’s number-one-selling hot tub brand – is celebrating 45 years of industryleading quality and innovation.

Since 1977, when Jeff and Jon Watkins built the first Hot Spring spa in a garage in North San Diego County, the brand has served those who want the most out of life.

With more than one and a half million hot tubs sold, Hot Spring Spas earned its place as an industry leader by focusing on what hot tub owners care about most – legendary massage, easy water care, leading energy efficiency, and unmatched customer care.

From the very beginning, innovation was ingrained in the very DNA of Hot Spring Spas. In 1984, the company developed its patented Moto-Massage® moving jet that’s unique in the industry. In 2019, the FreshWater® Salt System made water care easier than ever, allowing Hot Spring

spa owners to spend less time maintaining their spa and more time enjoying it.

The brand continues to lead the way with its comprehensive Energy Smart® system, a combination of innovations that includes unique insulation solutions, proprietary heaters, and custom-fitted covers that work together to keep spa water hot and energy costs low.

Vijaikrishna ‘VJ’ Teenarsipur, President of Watkins Wellness®, manufacturer of Hot Spring Spas, looks forward to a bright future for the brand. “Design, innovation, and quality have been at the root of our brand philosophy since day one. We are always trying to improve and do more to delight our customers while honouring our unique legacy,” he said.

Catalina Spas™ Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary In The UK

2022 has been a milestone year for Wiltshire-based Catalina Spas Ltd which was formed in 1997 by Stephen Crabb. Prior to this Stephen worked in the spa and swimming pool industry on projects throughout the UK and Europe, including the production of the UK’s first vacuumed formed spa. During this time, he had seen a significant increase in demand for spa ownership and the many benefits offered, however, there was limited choice and most were either very basic or expensive!

Seeing an opportunity, he sourced a manufacturer to build spas to a high standard for the British market and continue to evolve the design, performance and features on offer. In 1996, an agreement was signed with a family run operation in the USA and the following year, Catalina Spas Ltd was formed.

The very first of the ‘new’ spas was designed, built and then air freighted to the UK. It was unique and incorporated many standard features that are seen in today’s spas.

Twenty five years later, Catalina is a firmly established family business, and with the help of a great support team, they still supply some of the most innovative spas and swim spas to the UK and world leisure market. In addition to this, they also provide bespoke projects and are proud to supply spas to Sunseeker™ luxury yachts.

In 2022, Catalina Spas Ltd expanded into manufacturing and invested in its own facility to produce an all-new range of spas and swim spas as well as manufacture EZ Cover™ automated spa and swim spa covers and InAir™ air purification and heat recovery systems. Catalina

The New SpaNet SV Series Cold Climate Heat Pump

With rising electricity prices, increasing renewable energy regulations and the wish to heat spas faster and at a greatly reduced cost, heat pumps for spa pools have never been more important. However, heat pumps for them that excel in cold climates have been unavailable. That’s now changed with the introduction of new SpaNet SV Series Cold Climate heat pump.

SpaNet’s innovative Cold Climate Technology provides exceptional performance in cold climates allowing efficient operation in sub-zero temperatures down to -25°C.

Dual Electronic Expansion Valves (2 x EEV) and custom cold climate compressors ensure optimal delivery and adjustment of refrigerant flow to maximise COP in low ambient temperatures. This technology enables the product to outperform other heat pumps across all ambient temperature ranges and deliver a

stunning COP value of over 2.0 at -15°C (5°F) ambient temp / 38°C (100°F) water temp.

The Cold Climate heat pumps feature a modern enclosure design, built of custom blended plastic engineered for increased UV resistance and to withstand extreme sub-zero temperatures.

SV Series Powersmart heat pumps are the first heat pumps to offer true integration to a spa pool. There is no separate keypad on the heat pump for adjusting settings,

rather they feature a dedicated interface for seamless integration to a SV Series spa controller allowing all temperature settings and mode adjustments to be conveniently controlled via the spa side keypad. The heat pump and spa control have been designed to work in synergy. With solid state diagnostics and real time heat pump monitoring the SV series control system correctly looks after every need of the heat pump ensuring long term reliability whilst delivering absolute minimum operating costs.

Ideal for installation with spas, swim spas and plunge pools, Dualcore construction allows owners to heat or cool a spa depending on the season.

Holiday Parks Can Save All Round With New PLS Autofill & Drain System

Leading water leisure industry manufacturer and supplier Park Leisure Solutions Ltd are achieving huge savings for holiday park owners and operators with installations of the new PLS Autofill & Drain System for their hot tubs and spas. Currently on changeover days most park owners and operators rely on a manual method to drain, fill and monitor water in their hot tubs or spas, which can be time consuming and extremely costly.

The new system is very simple to use and can be fitted from new or retro fitted to any hot tub or spa. Once installed, on changeover days simply switch on the PLS Autofill & Drain System. This will begin the drain process, once the water is fully drained the system will pause, allowing for general cleaning and filter inspection to be carried out, ensuring the hot tub or spa and filter is 100% sanitised.

On completion, reactivate the cycle which will automatically refills to the correct water levels. It will then restart the hot tub and start the water heating process, ready for chemical testing and use. In addition, when in use, the system will continue to monitor and adjust to the correct water levels – saving man hours on changeover days, water level monitoring and taking the guesswork out of maintenance. This in turn leads to more efficient and effective chemical dosing, and further saving time and money plus providing a safer environment for customers.

The new PLS Autofill & Drain System, coupled with the company’s award winning offers park owners and operators the complete solution for spa operation and maintenance, ensuring the most cost effective way to fill, heat, drain and maintain their spas and hot tubs. Park

FROG® Hot Tub Cartridges Are Now Recyclable

King Technology, makers of FROG sanitising products for residential hot tubs, is partnering with TerraCycle®, a global recycler known for ‘recycling the unrecyclable’.

“We’re very excited about this programme,” Jackie Rieck, Director of Marketing for King Technology stated. “It’s the first of its kind in the industry and we hope it will lead the way to more sustainability in our industry.”

FROG hot tub cartridges are prefilled, which makes hot tub water care easy. People don’t have to measure anything, they simply open the package and insert the cartridges into their hot tub system according to package directions. In addition to ease of use, prefilled cartridges keep potentially hazardous contents away from contact with people.

However, because the hot tub industry’s sanitising products come in plastic containers or pouches that contain chlorine or bromine, they are typically not accepted through local recycling services.

But a partnership with TerraCycle makes recycling easy. Retailers can sign up to participate in the FROG Recycle programme. When they do, they put a dedicated Recycle box, TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box™, in their store. Their customers put empty FROG hot tub cartridges into the box. This increases store traffic for retailers who participate in the programme while enhancing customers’

experience with an exciting new recycling programme.

When the recycle box is full, it’s shipped to TerraCycle who operate dozens of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in 21 countries and handle hundreds of different waste streams. When the empty cartridges are received at TerraCycle’s MRF’s, they’re processed into usable raw material and transformed into common, useful products.

The FROG Recycle programme launched at the International Pool | Spa | Deck Expo at Las Vegas in November, where hot tub store owners responded enthusiastically.

Inflatable Hot Tub Brand Goes Into Administration

Cheshire-based the Clever-Company – who sold inflatable hot tubs, accessories and chemicals under the brand of CleverSpa – have gone into administration. Joint administrators advises that following a period of increased sales for hot tubs during the pandemic, the company had experienced a softening of demand over recent months. Rising energy costs were also a huge factor that impacted the company.

These factors, combined with recent investment in the CleverCompany’s cost base, led to the business experiencing considerable pressure on cash flow, and the directors of the firm agreed that it was in the best interests of the company’s creditors for it to be placed into administration at the end of October.

Products from the brand were sold from the company’s website (which has now ceased to function) and were stocked in a range of well known high street retailers including B&Q, Homebase and the Range. The business said it had a 30-year history in manufacturing and distribution within the sector and promised great innovation, thoughtful design and a commitment to delivering a great value range of products.

The company is now being managed by Howard Smith and Richard Harrison of Interpath Advisory, who were appointed joint administrators.

Sadly, 25 staff members have been made redundant, with nine remaining to support the administration.

Administrators are now looking for a buyer for the business and its assets.

Waterco Products Provides Superior Water Quality Down Under

Aquatics Down Under Swim School is a popular facility in New South Wales but after the state government’s planning authority approved a multi-million-dollar expansion of North Rocks Shopping Centre, it meant the school’s existing 45-year-old pool swimming pool had to be re-built in a different location within the complex.

The new design needed to accommodate up to 1,500 people comfortably and the goal was to create a community asset and expand aquatic services beyond learn-to-swim classes.

When TradeMark Pools constructed the new pool for Aquatics Down Under, Director Mark Holland chose a range of Waterco products to provide swimmers with healthy water and comfortable pool temperatures year-round.

Capable of filtering below 3 microns, Glass Pearl filter media was used to deliver outstanding water clarity. Its spherical, smooth shape significantly reduces backwash time, resukting in valuable water and chemical savings.

As a commercial installation, two of Waterco’s multi-award-winning MultiCyclone 70XL centrifugal filters were chosen to prefilter up to 80% of the incoming dirt load prior to it reaching the main filter. This increases the filter media’s lifespan whilst reducing backwash frequency and water use.

Waterco’s Micron Side Mount Media Filters were also installed which feature ‘Fish tail’ hydraulically balanced laterals that improve its filtration and backwashing hydraulic efficiency. Once installed, there is virtually no maintenance or repairs required.

Purpose-built for commercial pools, Waterco’s Hydrostar pumps were chosen too, along with the company’s Electroheat PRO which is designed to heat up to 250,000 litres and is Waterco’s latest advancement in commercial size swimming pool heating.

“Waterco’s filtration and heating innovations are renowned for their durability and reliability, ensuring businesses like Aquatics Down Under Swim School continue to provide essential services to the community,” said Waterco Australia Sales Representative John Xagoraris.

A few years after the completion of a residential building designed by the famous Russian architecture firm Tsimailo Lyashenko and Partners, the architects of Blockstudio – led by the two siblings Natalia and Ivan Trofimov – have put their stamp on a nearby pavilion, commissioned by the same owner and dedicated to housing a swimming pool area with other wellness facilities.

The style of the two buildings is very similar – the house is a geometric space where the elevations are an interplay of opaque and transparent glass and a flat white roof . The new, detached addition takes its pure aesthetics to the extreme, with large full-height windows, punctuated by thin chrome-plated steel pillars supporting a white ceiling.

Here, an area of about 95 m2 contains a narrow, 18 metre long stainless steel pool, in which users can take in scenes from the garden. Surrounding it are several functional areas, dedicated to the sauna, shower, changing room and toilets, and a floor made entirely of Lapitec’s Bianco Assoluto with a Lithos finish, which, thanks to its high friction coefficient, provides maximum underfoot safety after exiting the pool or

shower. The latter is also made of sintered stone. Flush with the floor, it features a few thin cuts that allow water drainage and gives a glimpse of Lapitec’s composition.

The whiteness of the material, the result of a mixture of 100% natural minerals, free of crystalline silica, inks or petroleum derivatives, defines the project and together with the project’s geometry, creates a precise continuity between horizontal and vertical planes, where Blockstudio wanted to enhance the relationship between the interior and outside of the building.

With another year ending shortly, it is a time to reflect on the vital work that has been done on behalf of the industry. The qualifications and courses that have been provided via SPATA and BISHTA tutors, for which I am very grateful for their commitment, which has been outstanding. A liner course was recently held at Certikin, and thanks are due to Chris Green and Craig Williamson for hosting the day; Craig, along with Brad Armstrong (Aquaflex) and Will Dando (Plastica), also team tutored the day for 15 candidates. A heat pump course was held online, which was tutored by Richard Carrington. Environmental control and ductwork courses have been run by AstralPool UK and Heatstar (through Ron O’Sullivan and David Hayles). It is still hoped to organise a fast-track Pool Plant Operations (PPO) course with the STA for experienced staff in the pool industry, but this will be subject to demand. The crucial discussions with ISPE colleagues about pool technician, engineer and designer qualifications continue.

BISHTA has provided a range of courses on water hygiene management through Howard Gosling (Pool and Spa Advice), David Ramsden (CPC), Chris Brady (SpaTech Training), Martin Rigby (Aqua Warehouse Group) and Iain Jardine (Solway Water Management). Julian Mills has recently joined the team and will aim to deliver courses in the New Year. Dangerous Goods (Howard Gosling), Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs (with NICEIC tutors), Safe Hot Tub Handling, and the

An extra service can now be offered to members by Adtrak (themselves, a new BISHTA and SPATA member); for more details about the digital services available, please see page 32.

The industry has been represented at various shows this year. BISHTA and SPATEX were at the Holiday Park and Resort Innovation Show at the NEC. Promoting the importance of maintaining hot tubs in business settings, according to HSG 282. With Piscine Global Europe back for the first time since 2018 (in Lyon, France), this was also the setting for WAPSA’s sixth annual meeting, which was an opportunity to share market information and to learn from other associations. The Lyon show also hosted the 10th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards. For the first time, SPATA and BISHTA members were unsuccessful in winning any of the 2022 awards, but congratulations to all of the members that were shortlisted (and for details of who the winners were this year, please see from page 42).

When it comes to our own industry show, SPATEX exhibitors recently attended an online meeting to catch up on the latest news regarding the Coventry Building Society Arena. We look forward to seeing you for SPATEX 2023 from Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February.

This time of year, judging for the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is underway, so SPATA and BISHTA members will be waiting to hear how they have got on when the winners are announced at the Industry Gala Evening, always held at SPATEX on the first evening, so this year it is Tuesday 31 January 2023. Please remember that attendance at the event is open to the whole industry, so book your seats now by calling 01264 356210 (or 356211).

At this time of year, it seems particularly appropriate to thank the dedicated team that supports our members and exhibitors/visitors; Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Claire Maguire, Debbie Thornton (and Caroline Cross, who left the team earlier this year). All of these talented people play a vital part in the Andover office on behalf of the BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP. SPATEX also benefits from the outstanding expertise of Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer and Thay Castro, along with Howard Gosling (SPATEX Chairman) and the rest of the SPATEX Directors. To the other dedicated Chairs of the respective Boards, Committees and Councils and all of their applicable committee colleagues, I am also hugely grateful, namely; Pete Grinnall (BSPF), Ben Studdy (SPATA), Dorian Davies (BISHTA), Dyfed Thompson-Smith (PIP), and to Patrick Thorpe for his role as Company Secretary (for BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP). There are also many dedicated members of the SPATA and BISHTA technical committees who have worked tirelessly again this year under the respective chairmanship of Howard Gosling and Peter Lang. SPATA is also very fortunate to have Peter Lang and Ian Betts undertaking inspections (with Steve Conway, Alan Jackson, and Nigel Fallow also trained) to help support members; my thanks to you all.

Have a great festive break, and please note that our office will be closed from lunchtime on Friday 23 December 2022 and reopens on Tuesday 3 January 2023; see you at the Coventry Building Society Arena for SPATEX 2023!

A Strategic Partnership For Marketing

This year, SPATA and BISHTA have formed a new strategic partnership with UK design, brand and digital marketing agency, Adtrak. The exclusive collaboration means Adtrak is the preferred choice for digital products and marketing services to the members of both associations.

Adtrak’s reputation for digital success and its experience working with an elite group of global commercial and domestic pool designers resulted in a recommendation from an existing SPATA member. The partnership will allow Adtrak to provide SPATA and BISHTA members with market-leading web design and digital marketing advice, aiming to deliver lead generation and profitable results.

Adtrak is a results-driven design, marketing and brand agency providing digital transformation for their clients with a team of ambitious marketers and strategic creatives serving the whole of the UK. They work in partnership with their clients to build brands, grow businesses and deliver a profitable return.

Three fundamental values guide Adtrak: • Simplicity − Why make things complicated?

MORE ABOUT ADTRAK

Adtrak is an award-winning agency celebrating 25 years in web design, marketing and branding. Going from strength to strength, the company recently celebrated winning the ‘Supplier & Service Provider’ award at the Pro Landscaper Business Awards 2022.

Listed as one of The Drum’s top UK digital agencies in 2021, the full-service agency provides web design, branding, SEO, PPC, photography / videography, online marketing, telecoms, social media and more.

Their strategies are clear, straightforward and simply designed to perform.

• Visibility − Full disclosure. You can see what they are doing, why they are doing it and how well it’s working at all times.

• Performance − They let their results speak for themselves when generating more business from your website and marketing.

From e-commerce and paid marketing integrations for transactional websites, to social media campaigns to improve brand awareness, Adtrak’s specialists can implement solutions that will serve websites, customers and businesses most effectively. They also prioritise the services that save their clients time otherwise spent on manual tasks, such as tracking calls and automated reporting. It’s all about the customers’ journey and generating more leads to result in more highquality sales, which is always good news!

As more and more business takes place online, SPATA and BISHTA feel it is fundamental for their members to have access to the best tools available to grow their online presence. A business’s online presence can be defined by how easy it is to find when searching for relevant keywords online or how many virtual ‘touchpoints’ a customer can interact with when wanting to find out more about a brand, products and services. If a company has an excellent online presence, it will be more visible on the internet and social media, making it far more ‘discoverable’ to potential new clients.

SPATA and BISHTA can see enormous potential for their members to have access to a straight-talking transparent company, such as Adtrak, to grow their online presence, whether they decide to focus just on their website or cherry-pick from the myriad of services Adtrak can offer their business.

Excitingly, for the first time, the Adtrak

team will be exhibiting at SPATEX in 2023 (stand B3), where they will be on hand to talk about how they can help businesses grow their offering online and thrive in the ever-changing digital landscape. They will be promoting their tailored packages, which working alongside SPATA and BISHTA, can offer an extensive range of benefits to businesses working in the wet leisure industry and other associated industries.

Visitors will be able to discuss their digital business development challenges with the Adtrak team and, nearby on stand A1, speak with the SPATA and BISHTA team about the benefits of trade association membership and how these can work together to launch a new starter or grow an existing business to the next level.

PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL MARKETING SUPPORT FOR MEMBERS

Adtrak has already been providing support for the associations, including webinars for members on ‘Embracing Digital’ and newsletter articles with insights into websites and marketing. All SPATA and BISHTA members are also eligible for a free website audit and business review from Adtrak, evaluating their websites not only for the content, but also for the technical performance. They look forward to working with the Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) committee to help grow further industry awareness with consumers and to meeting more people from the industry face-to-face when they exhibit at SPATEX in early 2023.

Chris Hayes (Managing Director of SPATA and BISHTA) said: “Both trade associations have built a world-renowned reputation for setting exceptional standards for the combined pool and hot tub industries. SPATA and BISHTA always aim to provide members with the resources to grow their businesses and offer their customers exceptional service. Adding Adtrak to our extensive members’ benefits offering will allow members to take their businesses to the next level and grow their market share even further.” Adtrak

Changing Times

In this end of year issue, Luke Griffiths, STA’s Pool Plant Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) looks back on 2022 and ahead to 2023

2022 has been a challenging year as the sector recovers from the global pandemic. The industry faced further challenges from the chlorine shortage, chemical incidents, recruitment challenges and now the rising fuel costs are hitting the sector more than most because of the energy intensive requirements of operating swimming pools and leisure facilities.

These continue to be very challenging times, and ukactive recently reported that 40% of council areas are at risk of leisure centre and swimming pool closures and restrictions before April without immediate government support. Without doubt, these are worrying statistics

Taking on board what we learned through COVID; influencing government decisions in crisis times can be extremely difficult and a long-drawn out process, which is why as a national governing body for swimming, we adopted a two-pronged approach in 2022 – to continue to strongly support industry lobbying efforts for energy support, plus also to look at ways we can use our resources and expertise to provide real tangible support, and effect positive change in the here and now.

STAND UP FOR SWIMMING

One of these tangible campaigns was STAnd Up for Swimming, which was designed to help bridge the post-pandemic swimming teaching skills gap this year. Through the campaign we have donated tens of thousands of our own charity funds to provide free swimming teaching training across the UK. The campaign has brought more than 800 new swimming teachers to the industry – swimming teachers who will go on to teach many hundreds, thousands of learners a key life skill during the course of their career.

STAMP OUT VAT

On 22 November, we also launched a new campaign called ‘STAmp Out VAT’ on the teaching of swimming, lifesaving skills and drowning prevention VAT Zero-Rated or VAT exempt, which would help private swim schools in the UK, who like leisure centres

are also struggling during this economic crisis and trying to keep lessons affordable for customers.

The launch of STAmp Out VAT followed an industry survey we carried out in October, where 86% of private swim schools stated they are concerned about rising energy costs − the threat to their business and the knock-on effects.

One swim school in Cornwall quoted in the survey that electricity is set to increase from £6,500pa to £32,000pa. Another said scrapping VAT would give us a long-term strategy, while many agreed that learning essential life skills shouldn’t be taxable. Many also said that due to the overriding cost of paying VAT, with pool hire rates increasing, it’s not financially viable to continue unless something changes, quick.

We believe, that removing a ‘consumption tax’ on swimming lessons – lessons that teach an essential key life skill and that could potentially save someone’s life – would not only yield significant benefits for the millions of people wanting to learn how to swim, it would also secure the future of swim school businesses who are reliant on hiring pools and create employment opportunities.

Without this support, the knock-on effect for pool operators as well, who rely on the income from hiring pools to swim schools is also a concern.

ENERGY EDUCATION

The issue of energy has also fast-tracked the industry to look at the way they are operating pools this year, and question how they can be run more sustainably and cost-effectively. In my role at STA this has also been a key focus for our pool plant operations team. How we can educate and work with like-minded partners to support pool operators and swim schools through this transitional period and into the future.

STA’s main contribution to this is through our qualifications and in particular the CIMSPA Professionally Endorsed STA Level 3 Pool Plant Operations qualification, which covers everything operators need to ensure safe, clear and hygienic water practices are adhered to in pools, spas and interactive

water features. It also contains an energy efficiency unit which is incredibly relevant in the current climate.

During 2022, we have also provided information to support operators through our SPN articles where we have covered some of the hot topics mentioned above; with the last two articles focusing on how pools can tackle the chlorine shortage and energy efficient lighting. As well as at STA’s annual Pool Plant Conference in Leicester where our speakers covered:

• Electrochlorination: On-site hypochlorite generation in commercial swimming pools

• Water Testing & Turbidity

• Energy, Cost and Carbon footprint savings in Leisure Centres

• Chemical Safety

• Bacterial risk considerations for facilities generating aerosols.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2023

Understandably, the theme for SPATEX 2023 is energy efficiency and STA’s pool plant team are just finalising its line-up of speakers for the annual seminar on Tuesday 31 January. We will also be exhibiting and you can come and meet the team on stand A17.

STA will also continue the energy efficiency theme into 2023 with February’s SPN article already pencilled to provide top energy efficiency tips. In light of the energy crisis, we feel this is going to be a beneficial theme to readers.

I think we can all agree that 2023 is not going to be easy, and we are all going to take some hits, but if we continue to move forward through education and innovation, we will hopefully come through 2023 stronger.

STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

SEE STA AT SPATEX 2023

As well as hosting seminars and exhibiting, we will also be kicking off our ‘Swim to the Beat’ campaign in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation. STA are inviting all swim schools, clubs and leisure facilities – everyone involved in aquatics – to swim to the beat in February and host a month of fundraising fun. On the Wednesday, Aqua Warehouse will be providing a swim spa for an STA team to do a relay swim to launch the campaign. Please come and cheer the team on. Visit the STA website to register.

Alukov Group Reaches New Heights In Sales And Production Capacity

Over the past few years, a period of frantic growth has taken place for the Alukov group with all four manufacturing plants of the specialist manufacturer having benefitted from recent financial investment. Each site has been improved to increase production capacity with a view to shortening production times to satisfy customer needs for quick delivery of their pool and patio enclosures worldwide.

Following the investment in facilities, Alukov group now boasts four fully modernised manufacturing plants – two in the Czech Republic where the brand has its headquarters, plus further sites in both Slovakia and Hungary. All of them have received major improvements with not only the footprint of each of the production facilities growing, but also new technologies that include a lot of automation and digitalisation being implemented, leading to lowered energy consumption and improved business processes.

GROUP TURNOVER EXCEEDS €60M IN 2021

For the global pool industry, the last few years have been notable for a period of rapid demand and expansion, and it seems that for Alukov the growth is still ongoing. The group was able to increase turnover by 30% in two consecutive years and projecting another 25% increase for 2022.

Alukov was founded in 1995 in the Czech Republic and products supplied to the local market made up the majority of sales for

many years. Today the Czech market makes up about 20% of group turnover as the whole company focuses on export. The main markets are now Germany, Austria, Sweden, France, USA, Belgium and the UK. In each of these countries, the group has established strong partnerships with local companies which have proved to be beneficial for all parties. Thanks to good sales results, the group increased production capacity and developed new products, attracting even more businesses to start working with the Alukov group within their local markets.

OVER €11M INVESTED

The group heavily invested in all aspects of its business. New production halls and warehouses were built in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary and the plants now span over 110,000m². The biggest investments were in the new administrative centre, social facilities for employees, company and employee parking for 300 cars, new machinery and technical equipment for new production facilities, plus solar power facilities for the Orel (Czech Republic) and Batonyterenie (Hungary) production plants. Also, plenty of smaller but very important investments were made that will benefit the Alukov group in the longer term. Namely the implementation of an ERP system plus supporting software for delivery, a new physical product showroom along with a digital twin, and more efficient energy management solutions.

Overall, Alukov has been focusing on

digitalisation and automation for the past few years. Business processes, manufacturing, technology and logistics – all of these key areas have been improved by IT solutions. These enhancements, as well as the products, which are tailor-made for each customer, were also developed and implemented on a bespoke basis to meet the Alukov group’s individual needs precisely. This has resulted in significant improvements in the automation of business processes, the field of control, and ultimately, in user-friendliness for the employees and end customers.

With almost 30 years of experience within the sector plus an in-house development centre which constantly turns out new innovations both now combined with the company’s latest investment in manufacturing and processes, Alukov clearly is aware of its past, present and future as one of the market leaders for pool enclosures and roofing technologies – a position which it has further solidified over recent years.

Artesian Spas UK Celebrate Their 20th Anniversary

October marked a very special month for Artesian Spas UK as the company celebrated 20 years of success in the hot tub industry.

To mark such a fantastic milestone and to celebrate their achievements, the Artesian team along with a selection of their dealers, visited the Artesian Spas headquarters in Las Vegas, USA.

The trip was an incredible opportunity for dealers to visit the factory in America, expand their knowledge of Artesian even further, network with likeminded dealers and celebrate their incredible efforts over the last few years.

With an outstanding commitment towards technological innovation, energy efficiency, performance, quality and customer care, Artesian Spas has grown into one of the most recognised names within the hot tub industry.

ARTESIAN SPAS’ EUROPEAN HISTORY

It all began back in 1998 when Rob Stirland embarked on a journey into the wet leisure industry setting up a small hot tub showroom in Doncaster. Spotting a gap in the market for a high-end product, it was in 2002 that Rob chose Artesian Spas after a visit to their factory in the USA… and with that decision, Artesian Spas UK was born.

Rob initially set up a retail and distribution centre in a small unit where his current business was based. However after rapid growth, Artesian moved in 2006 to a purpose-built showroom and distribution centre allowing for further expansion in the years to come.

In 2009, Rob’s daughter, Victoria along with husband Simon and business partner Gareth, became the new Directors of Artesian Spas allowing Rob to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Artesian Spas UK have continued to expand year-on-year and are now distributing their products into Europe.

During its 20-year history, Artesian Spas UK has proudly remained focused on product integrity, quality and customer service, with a commitment to building a strong dealer network to provide customers

with the knowledge and power to make an educated purchase.

Artesian Spas UK, still to this day remains, a family-owned operation with its headquarters in Doncaster and retailers throughout the UK and Western Europe.

Victoria Wrigglesworth, Managing Director of the company said: “Artesian Spas has gained world-wide recognition by being at the forefront of the industry with their unique handcrafted artistry, performance, innovation and remarkable quality. We’re extremely proud to distribute without doubt, one of the industry’s leading hot tub brands and we continue to be committed to providing the industry with the best of the best. We are excited for the future with many innovations to come over the next year in both Europe and the USA.”

ARTESIAN SPAS USA

Artesian Spas has an enviable reputation amongst the world’s leading manufacturers of hot tubs, providing customers with the highest level of quality, innovation, energy-efficiency, and customer support. Artesian Spas are manufactured by May Manufacturing, which started manufacturing at their original factory in Victorville, California, before moving to their current location in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2005. Since the move, highlights, key innovations and milestones have included:

• In 2006, Artesian welcomed their dealer network to their new manufacturing facilities. This year saw their expansion grow into over 45 countries worldwide.

• In 2007, Artesian made a breakthrough in innovation as they launched their brand-new Platinum Elite line with the patented DirectFlow® Technology.

• 2009 was a huge year for manufacturing as Artesian introduced the South Seas Spas line as well as their very first TidalFit Exercise Pool, which made a big splash in the hot tub industry.

Artesian Spas UK,

• The Garden Spas line soon followed in 2010 as Artesian added another four spas to their growing product line.

• Following the huge success of their newly remodelled South Seas Spas range, which was launched in 2012, Artesian Spas took another step in developing their next unique spa design and launched the newly remodelled Island Class.

• After making waves with their first TidalFit swim spa, Artesian expanded the line with four new models including the first 16ft TidalFit Exercise Pool with Hydraulic Propulsion in 2014.

• 2016 saw the redesign of the top of the range Platinum Elite Class which included even more innovation, quality craftsmanship and highend upgrades.

• In 2017 Artesian Spas released their patented TidalFit DTL Dual Temp, an L-shaped dual-temperature swim spa that meets the needs of both swimmers and hot tub lovers.

• In 2019 Artesian Spas revealed its latest hot tub line, the Artesian Elite, at the PSP Expo in Las Vegas. Previously known as the Platinum Elite spa, the newly remodelled line is home to some incredible new features such as the 24” AllegroFall, Bellagio Waterfalls and a curved design with a raised back.

• As with many in the wet leisure sector, Artesian Spas saw phenomenal growth in 2020 and 2021 in terms of sales due to more people spending time at home and investing money on transforming gardens and outside spaces. With this came an expansion into a 34,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility to maximise the efficiency of their Distribution Department, as well as occupying their 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility close by. In North Las Vegas, Artesian Spas continue to grow year on year thanks to its strong network of dealers around the globe.

PRODUCT INNOVATION & ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Product innovation has always been at the heart of creating each Artesian Spas model. Each spa is carefully considered, from the initial design (with each variation being hand-crafted) to the relaxing unique features of each spa line. Artesian’s designers have the unique ability to produce exciting innovations that add value to the user’s experience. Two of these such innovations were the creation of the patented Helix Jet system and the unique DirectFlow technology only found on the Artesian Elite line, both of which are discussed in more detail further on.

In addition to these features, Artesian spas have high-density insulation, energy-efficient circulation

pumps, luxurious ambient enhancing water features and optional UV/ Ozone based sanitisation systems, so it is easy to see why Artesian are at the forefront of the industry when it comes to high quality and product innovation.

PATENTED HELIX JETS

Innovative jetting makes use of the timeless concept of the helix, a three-dimensional, double-spiral form to provide an unrivalled deep tissue massage. This patented jet, aptly named the Helix, has been designed to provide a truly remarkable hydromassage exclusive to Artesian Spas. The Helix jets really come into their own when customers are buying from a hydrotherapy point of view.

DIRECTFLOW™ TECHNOLOGY

This innovative patented system allows each person to create a customisable and unique experience, targeting their own individual areas of tension. DirectFlow™ makes use of highly energy efficient, long-lasting pumps and motors, linked directly to each individual hydrotherapy zone. A DirectFlow™ personal control panel consists of an on/off switch, as well as an air control for the jets and a Variable Flow Control™ (VFC) which is an integral part of the DirectFlow™ system. This patented valve gives users the ultimate in personalised control over the spa hydrotherapy environment. It also can result in one of the most energy efficient spas on the market today.

MOVING FORWARD

Looking to the future, Artesian are very excited following their recent purchase by Monomoy Capital Partners. Purchased in 2021 at the height of the hot tub boom, all focus was on increasing manufacturing capacity. However, Monomoy’s increased investment in all areas will no doubt result in further improvements in many areas within the brand going forward. This coupled with the increased investment that Artesian Spas UK are making in Europe means that all at the company are looking forward to the next 20 years as much as they have enjoyed the first 20 years in the wet leisure industry!

AWARDS

2022 European Pool and Spa Award Winners Announced

Hosted by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA), the annual European Pool and Spa Awards celebrate the most outstanding domestic pools, spas and hot tubs in the wet leisure industry, with award winners from across Europe competing for the highest accolades.

The 2022 event was the tenth European Awards hosted by EUSA. The organisation’s President, Bert Granderath, presented the awards at the recently held Piscine Global Europe event in Lyon, France, on Tuesday 15 November. This year, there are winners from France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Turkey and Belgium.

SPATA and BISHTA submit shortlisted entries from the winners of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. These submissions alone provided each company with some exceptional PR opportunities, including receiving coverage in SPN, as shortlisted UK entries within

a dedicated feature. While there were no winners from the UK entries this year; these companies should be enormously proud of their achievements as British award winners, and EUSA European award nominees. These are outstanding accomplishments and an endorsement to celebrate, which can provide much stronger positioning against competitors, more credibility, and increased turnover opportunities – as many SPATA and BISHTA award winners over the years have experienced.

BACKGROUND

The primary purpose of EUSA is to support the development of a stronger and more prosperous pool, spa and hot tub industry throughout Europe by: • Lobbying on behalf of the industry on topics such as the development of European standards (thus highlighting safety) and also with European regulations and directives.

Party, Exercise Or Relax With

As a single product offering the combined benefits of both a small swimming pool and a hot tub or spa in a relatively affordable and straightforward to own and maintain package, it’s not surprising that entry-level swim spas have fared well in the UK, particularly over recent seasons.

For families who want to provide some water based fun and entertainment but within a budget, there’s clearly a lot to like. The versatility of the products found at the lower end of the swim spa price range mean that owners have an area where the kids can let off some steam, and at other times, there’s also the option of a dedicated pool for some moderate exercise. When the kids aren’t around, there’s a further option of a tranquil space in which to relax – a godsend in these increasingly trying times!

As an introduction to counter-current swimming, entry-level options provide a package which has always represented nothing short of outstanding value for money – something which should further add to their allure in these price conscious times – and this, combined with their multi-use ability has ensured their popularity.

With a number of manufacturers providing budget-friendly swim spa options, we take a closer look at some of the available models.

ACTIVEPLUS EP-12 – THE STARTING POINT OF THE TIDALFIT RANGE

Artesian Spas released its first TidalFit swim

spa model, the EP-14, back in 2008. Since then, they have introduced a wide range of quality models to suit all swim spa needs and budgets, built to the same world-class standards in quality that Artesian are famous for. The full range of TidalFit Exercise Pools are at the forefront of swim spa designs.

Their Special Edition 12ft Active EP-12 joined the successful range in 2015, taking its place as the entry-level option in the seven model swim spa series. The Active EP-12 offers two powerful, adjustable swim jets, providing a variable swim current perfect for the whole family to enjoy. Standard features include a stationary resistant swim tether for a more challenging swim, the ultimate hydro-massage with 24 Helix Jets to relax your muscles and unwind after your workout, an advanced digital control system, a maintenance free Grandwood cabinet that is both beautiful and durable and an 18” grab rail for stability during a workout.

The exercise element of the TidalFit does not end there though, as rowing bars and resistant cords are available as an optional upgrade for the ultimate workout.

Since its launch, the EP-12 has proven extremely popular and is ideal for families looking for an alternative to a pool and for anyone who wants to improve their fitness in the privacy of their own garden.

The Special Edition Active EP-12 is available with an optional Bluetooth Stereo and additional multi-coloured lighting for

owners who want to turn their swim spa into more of a party spa.

QUALITY ON A BUDGET – SWIM SPA OPTIONS FROM ADL

Available from Aqua Design & Leisure (ADL), the award-winning Catalina Mardi Gras is the original space saving swim trainer and party spa. Built in the US and originally launched in the UK in 2012, the Mardi Gras is now considered to be one of the most popular swim/party spas in the world. The newest incarnation features all of Catalina’s classic design cues including their tiled waterline and swimlane. It comes with six relaxing crystal water fountains, 11 seats and a total of 28 hydrotherapy jets that are spread over all seating positions. So even when at full capacity all 11 bathers can benefit from the Mardi Gras hydrotherapy massage.

For exercise the Mardi Gras features two river swim jets powered by two pumps, giving the ideal counter-current for a relaxing swim.

But that’s not all. The Mardi Gras also comes as standard with both Catalina’s Pro-Swim tether system and their Catalina Exercise equipment pack which includes rowing arms, bungies, straps and handles that allows the user to take part in several different forms of aquatic exercise.

Standing at just over 1 metre tall and only requiring a 23amp power supply, the Mardi Gras is no more imposing and no more expensive to run than a standard hot tub, but offers much more functionality.

Value For Money Swim Spas For customers that want to both relax and occasionally exercise in water, entrylevel swim spas ticks each box. Increasingly chosen as a replacement for a traditional small pool, these counter-current equipped products are often referred to as party spas and are aimed at budget conscious families rather than athletes that need a training aid for a serious workout. SWIM SPAS – ENTRY LEVEL

Joining the Mardi Gras at the start of last year, and becoming the smallest swim spa within the ADL range, was the Solstice Leisure SL-13. With three seats and three river jets, this value for money addition gains a lot of interest from owners working within the tightest of budgets but who still want the maximum flexibility from their investment.

SUPERIOR’S TWO SWIM SPA BRANDS TICK ALL THE ENTRYLEVEL BOXES

Superior Wellness offer a range of different swim spa solutions to suit varying needs and budgets and their two brands for the sector –Platinum Spas and Thermals Spas – deliver some fantastic entry-level options.

At 4.5 metres in length, one of the most compact in their range of swim spas is the Platinum Spas Eros. The perfect pool for youngsters to learn to swim in, this model is ideal for family fun and fitness, as well as low impact walking exercise.

With its compact dimensions, as well as being a swim spa, it delivers just like a hot tub. It has everything for family enjoyment; that special place to relax and a great place for swimming or for weightless exercising against the adjustable counter-currents.

It includes powerful jets, water features and LED lights.  Using 3 x 3HP pumps in the swim section the jet pressure is powerful and therefore the hydrotherapy is exceptional.

This great value swim spa is built with a high quality Superior Aristech Acrylic finish and the Ozone water clarifying system.

With the latest innovations and technology, the Eros is designed to a very high specification and full of features to create a stunning swimming pool. Cutting-edge pump and heating technology ensures that the Eros is also economical to run.

Thermals Spas swim spas are also an ideal choice for anybody who wants more than a conventional hot tub. Available in three sizes, the smallest in the range – the Classico – also measures 4.5 metres in length.

Like its stable mate, the Thermals Spas Classico has all the benefits of modern hot tubs with the unique advantages of an endless swimming pool experience. With full foam installation surrounding the shell – combined with the custom fit shell covers - an effective insulation barrier is formed which keeping the heat in and the cold out.

PASSION’S ACTIVITY MODELS – FOUR UNIQUE AND VALUE FOR MONEY MODELS

For the last three decades, Netherlands-based Passion Spas has been engineering and manufacturing numerous spa and hot tub models and the company has perhaps one of the

widest ranges of swim spas on the market.

All of the company’s models represent great value for money so it’s no surprise that their entry-level products have always been popular and they have been keen always to offer new models that keep up with the latest technology and trends.

One of the company’s newest series of swim spas is the Activity, and the range offers models with two different lengths and two depths, providing flexibility at a key price point. Whether the Activity 1, 1 Deep, 2 or 2 Deep is chosen, each model is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds. On one side there is all the comfort, pleasure and therapy benefits of a traditional spa or hot tub which is provided by 50 massage jets, whilst on the other side, the swim function is equipped with Passion Spas’ unique River Swim System™ and Current-lift Technology™.

The River Swim system consists of two floor jets and five large swim jets, placed in a row to create a steady flow of water over the entire width of the swim spa. Users can control the intensity of the water stream and when doing so, the flow is equally divided over the whole width of the current. Because of this unique technique, the water stream covers a wide area and is effectively positioned below the water surface, enabling users to swim with their head comfortably above water.

If the intensity of the River Swim System is decreased, the Current-Lift Technology is automatically activated, enabling the swimmer to remain in the prone position.

PEDIGREE SHINES THROUGH ON SUNBEACH’S SWIM SPA RANGE

Whether it’s a dedicated swim spa, or a combined swim and hot tub unit, fun, fitness and relaxation are within reach of more people than ever before.

To meet the rise in demand, the water leisure industry has expanded enormously, bringing newer and more innovative models to market.

And East Midlands-based Sunbeach Spas is flying ahead in that regard.

The company’s Ultimate Swim Experience range features eight dedicated swim spas and combined units, each of which sets themselves ahead of the crowd with three key features.

48 December 2021 SPN www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk
Available from Superior Wellness, the Platinum Spas Eros (below) and Thermal Spas Classico (above) are both 4.5 metre long entry-level options Passion Spas’ Activity 2 Deep is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds

Firstly, power. With up to 4 turbo jets that are unlike any others on the market, Sunbeach’s swim spas create a smooth, straight stream of counter-current with up to 2,000+ gallons per minute of flow, free of both turbulence and air bubbles to give a sublime swimming experience, no matter what the ability level of the user might be.

With power, also comes control. Unlike swim spas with limited, physical control valves, the included inverter system allows for full electronic control of the jet speed ensuring that users will always be able to find a comfortable swim speed, no matter what their ability level.

Finally, build. These share the same pedigree of design and construction as the company’s Oasis Spas range, including the full-foam, multi-density insulation system for superlative heat retention and energy saving.

One popular choice has been Sunbeach’s OD-39 model. This 6-seater fully-featured budget swim spa is produced with a Silver White Marble Aristech acrylic shell and features the latest Gecko touch screen control panel, Gecko in.stream 2 audio system, plus Ozonator and double filtration system for ease of maintenance.

Whether it’s relaxing after a hard day, splashing around with the kids or setting a new personal best, with options for every budget, Sunbeach Spas’ Ultimate Swim Experience has all the options covered.

DANUBE W-FLOW PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE WORKOUT OPTIONS

Wellis have had great success with their swim spa range which has been enhanced regularly over recent years and their current entrylevel model – the Danube – has benefitted greatly from both design and technology improvements.

The base model is now powered by an impressive W-Flow System where users can choose between six-speed levels from the slowest, most comfortable ‘floating’ setting, right up to the hardest exercise workout.

Similar to a modern treadmill, users can predefine the swimming speeds one after another, so slower stages can be inserted between swimming sprints and custom workouts can be created.

The width of the water flow within the W-Flow is only 50-60cm and the flow rate can be adjusted between 0.4-2.5 km/h.

Inside the latest model, the appearance has been simplified, lines are much cleaner and more modern looking, plus the space has been optimised. Wellis have now included two massage seats which are located either side of the water flow system, meaning owners can use the Danube for professional swimming and to enjoy a relaxing massage too. Rear filter housings have also been placed at the end of the swimming area so that the active water area is more than 50cm wider than before.

As with all models in the Wellis swim spa range, a more expensive Turbine option is also

available and both Danube variants feature UV-C water sanitisers, LED lighting, Thermo cover and Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity plus an AquaSoul 4.1 sound system as standard, meaning owning, entertaining within or working out in either Danube is sure to be a lot easier and a lot more fun too.

Danube models and more are available through Wellis and also SCP UK for the British market.

Taking Control Is The Key To Perfect Water Quality

Perfectly clear and safe pool and spa water is the holy grail for both owners and operators. After all, safety should always come top of any list concerning water leisure. Convenience comes in second though and for both commercial operators and increasingly, domestic owners too, it’s reassuring to know that there are products and systems that expertly and conveniently control water treatment automatically, and in doing so, remove any guesswork.

Commercial facilities have enjoyed the comfort of automation for many years but as technology advances and enhanced products become available, domestic owners have now got behind these solutions due to the many benefits they provide.

Automatic management can be extended beyond water supervision and maintenance to lighting, heating and even music to suit any mood. In many cases, remote operation can be controlled through a modern mobile phone, tablet or computer too, so that the pool or spa is primed and ready for use well before the user has even donned any swimming gear. As you’ll see, today’s systems are uncomplicated and user-friendly meaning that the most technically unskilled person can ensure perfect water management.

ZODIAC’S PH AND CHLOR EXPERT

FROM LIGHTHOUSE

The Zodiac pH and Chlor Expert really do take the worry out of chemical dosing and are perfect for domestic situations up to a maximum of 150m³, removing the need to handle chemicals around the poolside.

The very simple to operate control panel offers the end user an easy view backlit LCD screen interface which allows them to increase and decrease dosing levels as required. Of course, it is always important to understand that an auto-dosing system does need maintenance and probes need to be calibrated to ensure that levels correspond with the actual pool water. However, with this taken into account then the pH Expert will reliably dose liquid acids or alternatively alkali through a peristaltic pump into the pool

return filtration line, ensuring that the water balance is kept stable.

Use of the Redox based Chlor expert is just as simple with the concentration similarly adjusted on the front panel of the unit, also using a clear view backlit LCD screen.

Sodium hypochlorite is then fed into the pool return filtration line by the peristaltic pump.

Both units have a maximum dose rate of 1.5l/hr and are controlled by a configurable ‘OFA’ three-level over-feed alarm. All the necessary saddle clamps, sensors and feed pipes are supplied with both systems, making installation easy for any pool technician.

These entry level inexpensive chemical dosing units would enhance any pool owners plant room, whilst removing the day to day worry of handling chemicals.

CONTROLLERS FOR POOLS, HOT TUBS AND MORE FROM HANNA

Offering precise automatic control of pH and chlorine the Hanna BL-122 pool controller is, according to the company, fast becoming the number one choice for pool chemical control in Europe. An automatic pool, hot tub or swim spa chemical controller frees up owners from the monotonous task of manually checking and dosing their pools and provides much better accuracy and control

than manual testing. The Hanna controllers include unique 3-in-1 digital sensors and built-in high precision peristaltic dosing pumps which offer proportional control of chemicals.

In addition, the Hanna controllers log and store pool readings making them ideal for compliance with HSG 282 and are therefore very popular with anyone providing the use of a pool or hot tub with their holiday let. This allows previous readings to be reviewed on screen or downloaded to a USB memory stick for safe keeping or choose an internet version and review readings from anywhere in the world via the web.

For salt water pools, Hanna have recently introduced a pH only version of their controller which will monitor and automatically adjust the pH to ensure optimum levels for both bathers and chlorine efficiency.

Hanna pool controllers are supplied complete with everything needed to install and connect to a pool or hot tub and even include chemical tubing, pipe clamp saddles, chemical injectors and chlorine and pH chemical dosing pumps.

Offering a complete range of automatic

50 December 2022 SPN www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk
As increasingly high tech dosing pumps and control systems quietly go about the business of applying the correct amounts of chemicals to leisure water, it’s sometimes easy to forget the role these reliable products play in making the lives of owners and operators so much easier. In fact, as you’ll see, the latest innovations mean ensuring the management of safe water plus other connected equipment has never been as simple or more convenient!

dosing and control system products, SCP UK provides the power to manage water with solutions from various brands including Avady.

The Avady Physico PH CLM Panel is ideal for pH and chlorine control in public pools for indoor or outdoor use of up to 1,500m3. It is equipped with a probe compatible with up to 80ppm of stabiliser and accurately measures pH and chorine on a measurement scale of 0 - 14 pH and 0 - 5 ppm chlorine. The panel is pre-assembled and easily attaches to the wall. It has an option to be operated remotely as it is pre-installed to receive AvadyConnect via a dedicated web interface, allowing the control and coordination of water treatment equipment settings.

Avady’s Turboxy Duo pH regulates pH and chlorine in domestic pools up to 150m3 and public pools up to 90m3. It simultaneously regulates the pH and chlorine ppm and adjusts dosing depending on pH and chemical requirements.

Safety is ensured with the Turboxy Duo with a volumetric alarm preventing the chemical container running dry and as with the Physico PH CLM Panel, the Duo can be operated remotely through the use of AvadyConnect via an optional kit.

Lastly, the multipurpose Avady S20 pH or RX dosing pump doses and regulates pH or chlorine by Redox. Used alone the pump doses the product constantly. Coupled to a pH or chlorine regulator it automatically doses the pH or chlorine. The system is electromagnetic and requires little maintenance and is easy to use. It’s also equipped with a noise reduction system.

PROACTIVE PROTECTION WITH GC POOLCOP

Ensuring water treatment is continually correct can be stressful and highly time-

consuming, and only increases in complexity the more systems are installed in the pool.

GC PoolCop from Golden Coast is the remedy owners need. This state-of-the-art system attaches to auxiliary equipment in the plant room to monitor every aspect remotely, from temperature, lighting and water levels, to filter status, dosing and disinfection. It sends pool data to a central web interface and can all be kept under control at the touch of a button.

This all-in-one pool management and chemical dosing solution accurately measures pH and ORP and adjusts accordingly to ensure the pool always has clean, clear water.

The system is available in two models: GC PoolCop Genesis – suitable for any pool type, and GC PoolCop Evolution – ideal for domestic pools thanks to its unique automatic backwash function.

“When designing GC PoolCop the idea was to take the headache out of everyday maintenance and upkeep and let users focus on simply enjoying the pool,” explained Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “You can easily track chemical levels and get an accurate chlorine reading so you can be assured that the water has been dosed correctly and the pool is safe to use.

“And by making more efficient use of the chemicals and energy usage, it allows for better streamlining of costs and reducing the environmental impact and water waste.”

When a fault is found, or something requires attention in the plant room, GC PoolCop sends alerts to owners or pool management companies, allowing them to act quickly to stop any wasted resources and minimise downtime. This offers peace of mind to owners and allows pool companies to offer proactive maintenance contracts which stop unnecessary callouts.

Whichever version is chosen, GC PoolCop provides reliable monitoring on the status of your pool around the clock and delivers efficient, effective water treatment.

CENTURIO POOL – AN ALL-ENCOMPASSING MULTIPARAMETER CONTROLLER

Manufactured by EMEC, and supplied by Certikin, the innovative CENTURIO POOL swimming pool and spa controller can simultaneously manage up to ten channels to read multiple parameters such as pH, free chlorine, combined chlorine, total chlorine, conductivity and ORP.

Most operators concentrate on monitoring and manually testing their free chlorine and pH levels. However, engaging with other areas of water quality could have a positive impact on energy and water savings. Take Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) as an example. With a CENTURIO POOL you can have a conductivity probe so that TDS can be continually tested and displayed alongside free chlorine and pH. The deterioration of water quality against TDS data could allow an operator to implement an operational dilution programme at the lowest possible cost. This is just one example of how interacting with water quality data can assist operators with better managing utility costs. CENTURIO POOL can be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, GSM or ethernet and remotely controlled via ERMES, the online control system designed by EMEC.

ERMES records data, logs and graphs which could be invaluable with spotting trends and patterns.

ERMES can be logged into remotely via any webenabled device. All chemical controller parameters can

Putting The Focus Squarely On Safety

Safety measures for the UK’s swimming pools and spas are high on the agenda for both industry and owners alike.

After all, by their very nature, they are a potential hazard which if not taken seriously, can lead to serious injuries or worse.

Thankfully, fatalities within a wet leisure setting are pretty rare, but they do still happen. Just one death is one too many, given there are products available to avoid these sad scenarios.

Of course, risks are ever-present in the commercial sector, but with so many more products now being found in homes across the country, there’s the potential for the number of incidents to increase due to a lack of awareness with many new owners.

Pools secured by a building, enclosure, raised moving floor or slatted pool covers can effectively eliminate the risks of unauthorised entry but there are occasions when they either aren’t used or aren’t even an option. Plus what about the safety of swimmers once they have already entered the water? Thankfully, when it comes to bather safety, there are solutions too.

So what other options are available? In this issue, we take a closer look.

The AutoSafe safety cover is the latest addition to Dripool’s range of products and is an under coping system for rectangular pools

DRIPOOL PROVIDING 35 YEARS OF POOL SAFETY

Dripool have been at the forefront of pool safety for over 35 years and remain the UK’s only designers and manufacturers of automatic safety covers, for all types of swimming pool.

One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements.

The patented winding extrusion and tensioned leading edge ‘super Cam’ ensures that no front beam is required, making the Driglide the only automatic swimming pool cover that completely disappears from the pool when uncovered.

The AutoSafe is the latest addition to Dripool’s range of products and is an under coping system that is predominantly designed

to ensure safety, debris control and heat retention on new build, rectangular pools.

Whilst the AutoSafe incorporates the same unique winding technology and exacting standards as the company’s Driglide system, it has been cleverly simplified for the more budget conscious customer. The current Autosafe promotion provides free of charge brackets and plates to allow a rigid platform over the cover housing for coping and paving.

Once installed, both of these systems are easily operated via a discreet control panel simply by turning a key and pressing a button.

PLASTICA – A RANGE OF SOLUTIONS TO KEEP POOLS SAFE

Plastica know only too well the importance of safety around the pool and offer a wide range of safety products to the trade. The Poolsaver™ Safety Cover has been designed by Plastica to offer a tough construction to cover a pool and keep children or animals from entering it while it is not in use. Highgrade stainless ratchet straps help achieve almost effortless tension of the Poolsaver™ across the pool, ensuring this quality, yet low priced manual safety cover will safely support up to 100kg as per the latest French safety laws. Available in five colours, owners can choose the colour that best suits a pool and its surroundings.

Another common and safe way to keep a child from accessing a swimming pool is to install a mesh fence and Plastica’s Rollaway Fence is designed to protect children and animals from the dangers of pool water.

The fencing is a safe and easy to install protection system which conforms to the French AFNOR Safety Standards. The strong, tightly-woven mesh is dark green and black in colour permitting the best transparency and therefore enhancing the look of a pool and surrounding areas. Thanks to rigidity and a lockable spring-loaded gate, unsupervised small children are unable to open or climb up this safety barrier.

Lastly, Plastica offer the Immerstar

With accidents in and around water always a concern, pool and spa safety will always be the highest of priorities. Enclosures and slatted covers will guarantee increased security, but there are numerous other solutions on the market that are designed to either prevent unsupervised access or protect bathers once they are in the water. This issue, we look at a selection of products that feature safety as their key selling point

Battery Powered Pool Alarm – a clever system that can detect a body falling into a swimming pool. The system has a sensor which sits in the water and analyses movement, distinguishing interference waves from those produced by a falling body. The system will emit a loud, 100dB siren, should a person or animal fall into the pool. The alarm is suitable for solid construction in- or above-ground pools, up to a maximum size of 12m x 5m and has a detection range of 7m.

COVERSTAR AND WALU – LEADING SOLUTIONS FOR POOL SAFETY

Coverstar and Certikin have been in partnership for over 20 years. The system is based on strength – supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults.

Rather than using industry standard vinyl for the cover, which is popular with other manufacturers, Coverstar use the far superior Ultra Guard III vinyl composite.

The high level of UV resistance offered with the Ultra Guard III will reduce the level of colour fading considerably, compared to standard vinyl, plus it offers high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, rather than using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar use an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the life of the cover and improving the overall operation. In fact, independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors webbing sewn to the cover. The Coverstar heat sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create an attractive finish!

Catering for smaller budgets, Certikin also supplies the Walu safety cover. Manufactured to the stringent French NF P90-308 safety standard, it comfortably holds the required test weight of 100kg (approx.15.5 stone). In addition, the Walu offers solar and heat retention benefits and acts as a first-class winter cover.

The best-selling Walu Evolution is suitable for all pool shapes up to 11m x 5m and the lower profile Walu Starlight for rectangular pools up to 11m by 5m. The most unique feature of

the Walu is its modular design. Unlike other safety covers, where the whole system needs to be replaced if it is damaged, all individual parts on the Walu cover are replaceable. The cover’s panels and anodised aluminium tubes can easily be exchanged on site for new pieces, restoring the cover to its original standard.

A COMBINATION OF COMFORT AND SAFETY FROM FAIRLOCKS!

Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, the CovLock+ is a safety cover that combines comfort and safety. As it’s automated, handling it is so simple. It allows quick opening and closing at the turn of a key and can be adapted to all types of pools thanks to its different models. Matching surrounding is made easier too thanks a wide range of colour choices.

CovLock+ is completely waterproof around the whole perimeter, so the pool will stay clean in both summer and winter. It also prevents heat loss and stops evaporation. CovLock+ is completely automatic and is fully complaint to the French safety standard NF P90-308 and includes four types of rail options to adapt to all pool types.

For a completely different type of safety cover, the CovDeck allows for fast and effortless manoeuvring both with, or without a

motor. It easily slides along rails fixed to the ground thanks to the unique wheel design. With its solid aluminium frame, the decking guarantees a long life and safety since it complies with standard NF P 90-308, CovDeck totally revolutionises the practice of pool covers.

This 100% safe rolling deck easily slides over a pool, spa or swim spa and combines design with practicality. As a ‘2 in 1’ product, guests will watch in amazement as the pool is transformed into a real treat in under two minutes! This innovative cover product wins over more customers every year by building upon a reputation as a must have for pool and spa owners who just love the resolutely elegant and clever design of this decking, as it makes life easier and provides more space.

Several configurations are available, dependent on the dimensions of the pool or spa.

THE ALL-SEEING EVEYE FROM GOLDEN COAST

Eveye underwater cameras offer highdefinition 1080p footage with a 120-degree field of view for clear and comprehensive under-the-surface coverage.

The cameras can be installed at depths up to 10m at a maximum water temperature of 35°C. They have an IP68 rating that ensures complete protection against dust and water.

“Even the most vigilant lifeguard can’t always know what’s happening below the surface, and that’s where the Eveye comes in. By providing an extra point of supervision, especially at exit points of slides, rapids and lazy rivers, it helps to improve day-to-day pool safety,” explained Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast.

“The additional perspective is also useful for instructors at diving and swimming clubs. By analysing the athlete’s technique from different angles and at different stages, they can use it as a training tool for finding points to improve and charting progress. And in a similar vein, it also allows parents to monitor their children’s swimming lessons.”

Camera footage can be sent to a media carrier – anything from a mobile phone to a screen – and can be viewed using a TVI recorder or shown and recorded on a TVI recorder with a hard disk. When the TVI is

set up with a hard disk, snapshots can be captured from the footage to create stills for review or to keep moments as a photograph.

LIGHTHOUSE ADD COVERSEAL SAFETY COVERS TO THEIR RANGE

The patented CoverSeal cover comprises a unique mechanism that allows the fabric to be cleanly unrolled onto the pool whilst locking it in place in an extra-flat, extremely discreet, parallel guide rail system.

In a change from the norm, the cover housing is driven down the length of the area to be covered, unrolling the high-quality fabric as it goes. This means freeform pools and pools with large surround areas incorporating spas can easily be catered for. With a maximum width of 11m and length of 26m, even the most difficult of open spaces should now be able to be covered and secured.

The fabric was developed by the Serge Ferrari brand, a world leader in this market, and offers high UV resistance, extreme climatic conditions performance and exacting standards, including AFNOR NF P90-308.

With three styles of unit available, the cover is suited to all sectors of the pool market.

The battery solar powered ‘Automatic’ model is the top of the range, combining technology, aesthetics and respect for the environment. Activated by a wired or wireless control unit (in sight of the pool), it provides optimum convenience and allows you to uncover or make the pool safe in less than a minute. This cover is chosen by demanding customers who refuse to compromise between aesthetics and performance.

The ‘Semi-Automatic’ features a control unit equipped with a rechargeable battery pack which will last for approximately 25 opening/closing cycles. Making the pool safe or opening it up to enjoy it is effortless and takes less than a minute.

The ‘Manual’ model is the ideal solution for pool owners who wish to make the most of all the advantages of a CoverSeal on a tighter budget. It’s operated by a single-person courtesy of a ratchet system.

ENDING ENTRAPMENT – A SILENT KILLER IN POOLS AND SPAS

Pool entrapment most commonly occurs when a bather comes into close contact with a single main drain in a pool or spa and is pulled onto it by the suction of the pump. It is usually children, who do not have the

Buckingham Pools were involved from concept to conception with this beautiful swimming pool at a country house in the heart of Warwickshire. The residential 10m x 5.5m x 1.30m deep outdoor pool resides in an expansive verdant landscape, creating an elegant statement.

Adorning the pool is a Certikin-supplied Coverstar safety cover – a seamlessly integrated cover system, which is super-easy to operate and provides maximum safety without compromising the pool’s appearance. The multi-use built-in bench area incorporating non-slip entry steps makes for a well-equipped pool for serious swimming and entertainment.

The Coverstar system uses the top quality Ultra Guard III vinyl composite, rather than the industry-standard vinyl, popular with other manufacturers. The

high level of UV resistance offered by Ultra Guard III considerably reduces the level of colour fading compared to standard vinyl, plus it has high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, instead of using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar uses an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the cover’s life and improving the overall quality operation. Independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors’ webbing sewn to the cover. The heat-sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create a beautiful finish – an important feature given Buckingham Pools’ attention to detail.

strength of an adult and are therefore unable to break free from this suction, that are the victims.

Sadly, incidents of entrapment are far more common than one might imagine, and multiple owners and operators around the world have experienced the horror of dealing with such tragedies.

Thankfully, in the UK, new pools should be built to comply with BSEN 15288 and SPATA standards, and have two drains fitted, which are arranged so that there is no risk of pool users becoming trapped. If a bather becomes trapped on one drain, the second drain takes over, releasing the pressure on the first and freeing the bather.

However, the fact that these types of tragedies still occur is even sadder when you realise that there is a simple solution that has been in use in both domestic and commercial installations for years, including at pools owned by some of the world’s leading hotel chains. This solution involves far less work than fitting a second drain too.

Vac-Alert, from MSI Ltd, is a non-electrical, self-monitoring and low-maintenance safety system that responds in milliseconds to an increase in pump suction created by an obstruction being held by suction on the main drain. Once triggered, the Vac-Alert’s spring-loaded piston reacts quickly, opening to atmosphere and releasing life-threatening system suction to free a trapped bather.

Once installed, the Vac-Alert system requires only periodic maintenance, and affords operators and owners peace of mind in knowing that pool and spa users can enjoy the water without the fear of injury or even worse from entrapment.

THE FIRST LINE OF ‘DE-FENCE’ FOR OUTDOOR POOLS

Safety fencing around pools will certainly reduce the risk of disasters, and potentially fatalities, happening. As sole UK distributor of Protect-A-Child Pool Safety Fences, Poolfence UK help their customers reduce this risk.

As a stand alone physical barrier, the product has a great number of qualities that make it something to consider installing. To begin with it is aesthetically pleasing and can be removed quickly when not required.

In addition, the product is made from high quality materials and the fibreglass posts are guaranteed against breakage.

Pool fence posts must endure ongoing forces of fence tension as well as shock whenever a child or pet runs into them.

Protect-A-Child’s Quad-Bilt™ fiberglass composite posts are the only fence posts guaranteed unbreakable and guaranteed never to become bent or crooked. The result – the fence stays straight and attractive and you never have to worry about your fence posts becoming broken.

Tough mesh and a marine-grade finishing border complete the fence itself.

The colour of the composite fibreglass pool fence post is built in with coloured resins –not painted or simply coated like aluminium posts. So it can never scratch off, peel off, or flake off maintaining the look and high finish quality for years to come. It will act as a windbreak and a barrier to stop debris entering the pool too.

Mesh pool fence safety is dependent upon the child’s inability to open or remove the fence. A patented Point-Lock Secure Latch is the most fool proof way to prevent

children from unlatching the mesh pool fence sections and gaining access to the pool. They are lockable, adjustable for fence tension, easier to use, and safer than other latches.

Wellness – Invest In Something Special

Overall wellness encompasses both the physical and mental wellbeing so it’s important to ensure that both sides are provided for. Putting hot tubs to one side, there are a number of products that that offer this support including saunas, steam options and a number of other temperature based solutions. Heat options are still the preferred choice though and its no surprise why. As the warmth permeates down to the body core to relax and soothe tired muscles and joints, the mind is free to wander and unwind.

Regardless of the type of wellness product customers are looking to invest in to enhance their homes, leisure centres or spa facilities, interest continues to grow as more styles, varieties and materials become available.

Now that the colder weather is with us, the thought of unwinding in a warm and soothing sauna or other wellness product, whilst the frost or snow glistens outside, is very appealing. With advances in technology enabling smaller and more compact units to be developed this genuinely makes products accessible to everyone, including those with a little less space. Wellness options are continuing to tempt homeowners and commercial businesses and this market looks set to carry on growing.

After another challenging year, the wellness and health side of our lives is still at the forefront of our thoughts and this will continue to grow in importance as the drive to improve our physical and mental wellbeing continues.

PROVIDING A HOME SAUNA EXPERIENCE

Gone are the days when to use a sauna it involved a trip to a leisure club or booking a spa day – a sauna experience can now be enjoyed at home. With a continued upward trend on wellness, there has been a demand for saunas in the home, particularly since 2020 when time and money has been spent on transforming homes and gardens.

A sauna is a great choice for someone looking to relax both the body and mind.

Users can feel the gentle heat as they walk in, that instantly takes them away from any daily stresses. It’s a feeling and experience that’s hard to truly describe and match.

A sauna is also very beneficial for all individuals suffering from allergies or mental and physical health problems. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind at the end of the day.

Superior Wellness have a range of different sizes of infrared saunas to choose from for the best home sauna experience. A popular option is the Calor two-person sauna. Perfect for couples, it’s a compact solution that can be accommodated in a variety of locations, and one which won’t break the bank.

As with all the infrared saunas in the Superior range, the Calor is built from carefully selected Hemlock wood which originates from Canada. The type of Hemlock used is ‘vertical grain’, as this can expand and contract without warping and cupping.

Superior’s Hemlock timber is the best choice for a sauna – whether it would be for

home or even commercial use.

Their best-selling model is the larger, fourperson Marisol sauna – a great choice for any occasion and setting. Perfect for relaxation and unwinding after exercise or for hosting friends, this sauna will leave both owners and those in their company in awe.

THERMAL WELLBEING – AN INVESTMENT IN THE MIND AND BODY

Dröm UK have found that thermal bathing has increased in popularity over the years and with the recent pandemic making everyone far more aware of their health than ever before, the demand for saunas, steam rooms and other thermal wellbeing rooms in both residential and commercial premises has grown.

To keep up with this demand, the sector has developed and evolved with new innovative designs and products. The emerging availability of CNC manufacturing has radicalised bench design for the private consumer, as well as for commercial

projects. As a result, Dröm UK have found that their sauna clients are requesting more ergonomic, curvaceous benches to make their wellbeing space more bespoke and to add a higher level of comfort.

New advances in paint technology now make it possible to have a sauna with a more unique colour scheme, and this opens up more exciting new design possibilities in a market where designs have previously been dominated by the standard use of unfinished timber.

Salt bricks and salt machines are a cost effective way to bring further wellbeing into a space and they are becoming increasingly popular as the health benefits provided are a great return on investment.

Dröm UK have also developed the use of the Solfeggio sound frequencies and chromotherapy into both saunas and steam rooms, and have a working sound sauna on display in their showroom. Combined with aromatherapy this provides a new level of relaxation or reinvigoration to the bather helping with mindfulness, meditation and chakra alignment, and with these holistic therapies there has never been a better time to invest in the mind and body.

WHY TYLÖ STEAM IS HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM

Golden Coast has partnered with Tylö for over 40 years to provide customers with a wide choice of steam rooms and saunas of exceptional quality and innovative design.

For example, Panacea steam rooms incorporate innovative chromotherapy to deliver the ultimate spa experience, combining light, sound and colour to enhance the customer’s enjoyment.

“With the Panacea, users can add a touch of luxury to their homes,” explained Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast. “By adding a steam generator and an Elite or Pure control panel you get an easy-to-use set up that envelopes the user in soothing steam

at the touch of a button – ideal after workouts or just releasing tension after a long day.”

Available in two sizes, the Vista steam shower is typical of Tylö’s trademark modern Scandinavian aesthetic. With a rain shower head housed in a sleek matte black enclosure and smoky grey glass walls, it provides an understated yet bold look.

Vista units can be personalised with accessories, stools and RGB colour lights in the back wall. There is even a fragrance compartment for creating a relaxing aromatherapy experience.

Tylö’s popular Harmony range caters to the customer’s personal choices, with Tylö crafting a beautiful creation to the specified requirements and style. Everything from the shape, wood finish, heaters and accessories, making every Harmony sauna completely bespoke.

“Saunas and steam rooms are great for improving health, relieving stress and helping with workout recovery,” said Erik Söderlund,

Technical Sales at Golden Coast. “They are popular year-round, and as they are installed indoors you never have to worry about installations being weather dependent. From a commercial point of view, Tylö products make profitable additions to any showroom, and we work with local distributors around the UK to support them in their business growth.”

FOR SAUNA ENTHUSIASTS, SCP HAVE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR OPTIONS

For anyone requiring traditional or infrared heat therapy solutions for either indoor or outdoor settings, SCP UK have expanded their sauna offering in recent years.

For inside, and new for 2022, the ‘Onni’ range has been added to SCP’s Sentiotec sauna lineup. Onni means ‘happiness’ in Finnish and the brand are sure that after spending some time in an Onni cabin, users will feel a sense of happiness and joy.

There are three Onni saunas to choose from. The largest is a traditional Onni cabin which comes complete with a 6kW heater, control unit, stones and accessory box. The other two models – Onni Small and Onni Mini – infrared options. All options look great with their stylish black aluminium frame.

When it comes to outside, they offer a range of barrel options from Almost Heaven Saunas. The US brand has been at the forefront of setting the standard for quality barrel saunas for over 40 years. The company uses only the finest materials to create the best, most authentic sauna experience for true sauna lovers. THE WORLD’S FIRST SPACE-SAVING SAUNA FOR APARTMENT LIVING

For those wanting to incorporate home wellness into their daily routine but are short on space, KLAFS UK (part of Guncast) are currently marketing the S1 Sauna; the world’s first retractable sauna. No longer reserved for mega-mansions with expansive wellness suites, the S1 Sauna is only 60cm deep when retracted, the same size as an average wardrobe.

The versatile product can be installed in any room of the house – from bathrooms to living rooms – fitting seamlessly into small spaces. At the touch of a button, the S1 Sauna extends to a depth of 1.6m with the eMove technology ensuring synchronous and gentle movement. The stylish cabin is available in four different widths and can be personalised with several different finishes and fittings.

Gilles Darmon, Director of KLAFS UK commented: “We are proud to be the world’s first and unique supplier of a retractable sauna, providing a space-saving home wellness solution for those in smaller urban apartments or houses. Sauna use has typically been associated with high-end hotels, gyms and super mansions, but our S1 Sauna now makes home wellness much more accessible to buyers who may not have the space usually required for larger, traditional cabins.”

Established in Germany in 1928, KLAFS

is widely regarded as a world-leader in wellbeing facilities thanks to their innovative take on traditional saunas. They offer almost 20 different sauna designs, each made to measure and entirely customisable, alongside a comprehensive catalogue of other specialist spa facilities, including steam baths, caldariums, mud baths, hammams, tepidariums, ice lounges, ice fountains and snow cabins.

NEW FOR 2023: HARVIA SPECTRUM

INFRARED SAUNA

Certikin is proud to announce an exciting New Year addition to its wellness range – the

Harvia Spectrum infrared sauna.

Sharing all the health benefits of a traditional sauna – lowering the risk of heart and vascular disease, aiding deep muscle relaxation, releasing endorphins and improving sleep – the infrared sauna is becoming increasingly popular, thanks to its convenience and ease of use. Simply switch on the power and the panels will warm up and be ready for use almost immediately. And, due to the dry nature of infrared, users can read a book or listen to an audio device without damage.

SAVE ON SAUNA RUNNING COSTS WITH TOPLINE TECH

Recognised for the quality of its work, the agility of its solutions and its technical expertise, Topline Pools and Wellness is one of the UK’s most trusted and highly regarded manufacturers of bespoke saunas and steam rooms providing unmatched designs and solutions for a wide range of hotels, leisure centres, holiday parks and homes across the country. But its commitment to providing the highest-quality experience doesn’t stop there.

With the huge rises in energy costs, Topline’s Smart Sauna Controller is the ideal solution helping companies invest in their energy efficiency and ease some of these cost pressures. On average, a sauna uses 18kW of energy to maintain the room ready for use. Assuming a cost of 40p per kW/h, during a 16-hour opening period this equates to £42,000 over 12 months. With a Topline Smart Sauna Controller, a room can be maintained at a ‘ready state’ of 60°C. Pressing a button on entry, the heater can be turned up to full power (85°C) for a fixed period (programmable by the operator). Limiting full heat to periods when the room is

occupied, a Topline Smart Sauna Controller could deliver up to 20% energy savings –that’s £10,500 over a 12-month period!

If you’re looking to optimise energy efficiency and maintenance costs further, Carel’s energy saving steam generators are the most reliable unit on the market. As official UK stockist of Carel wellness and spa steam generators, accessories and spares, Topline offers its customers the most competitive prices anywhere, with all spares in stock and next day delivery available as standard. And all this backed by Topline’s enviable after sales service, which includes technical advice and maintenance support to keep your product performing at its peak.

STEAM GENERATION AND FROM HUMIDITY SOLUTIONS

At Humidity Solutions they offer

different products that can provide both humidification, and if required, dehumidification for any customer’s spa and sauna.

Their primary product for creating humidification for a wellness environment is the Vapac VS18D steam generator unit. This unit is easy to install and can provide a steam room or spa with up to 18 kg/hr of steam. It is controlled by a built in temperature sensor and controller within the unit that comes pre-configured for ultimate ease of use when installing the unit. Not only are these units easy to install, they are simple and inexpensive to maintain as a result of their readily available disposable steam cylinder which can be specified for your specific water quality at your site to prolong the lifespan of the unit. Humidity Solutions keep a large stock of these units and their spares so they cannot be beaten on lead times. Following any order, they can get a unit or spare parts to customers within two days.

Whether investing in a domestic or commercial steam room, reliability and efficiency are key when choosing a steam generator, and Vapac’s VS range has been the go-to steam generator for the steam bath sector for many years and offers outstanding reliability and versatility. The British manufactured Vapac range is supplied exclusively in the UK by Humidity Solutions, a company with an established reputation in the market.

That Work

With a wide variety of environments that filter products have to operate within, it should come as no surprise that there is a vast list of options to choose from for providing clear water in swimming pool and spa settings – and that’s without even touching on various types of filtration media that are available too!

Filters – whether working hard for the largest of commercial swimming pools that are used on a daily basis or for a small domestic pool which only gets unveiled on the warmest of days – help to ensure water quality is the best it can possibly be, regardless of the size of installation or demand for its use.

Often viewed as low tech and normally hidden away behind the scenes, there’s no doubt filters of any type, along with any filtration media they may use, form a crucial role within the safe operation and enjoyment of pools and spas.

Thanks to improved designs, a number of products have become more user-friendly, others are more flexible in their use, and some are adding green credentials to their list of benefits by helping to reduce the amount of water needed for efficient operation. These factors, either alone or combined, normally lead to lower operating costs, so the developments are very much welcomed by owners and operators alike, especially in these times of high energy costs and inflation.

It can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer though. So largely outing media aside and concentrating on filters and systems themselves, in this issue we highlight just some of the latest options that are available.

ESTABLISHED OR NEW – SCP HAS FILTER PRODUCTS FOR EVERY NEED SCP UK supply a wide range of filter solutions from many leading brands within

the sector including Hayward, Lacron, Pentair and Waterco. They also have a UK exclusive in the supply of SuperPool products.

One solution which has stood the test of time is the Triton Neo range from Pentair. With a reputation built over 40 years of simplicity, performance, clarity and reliability, the Triton Neo remains a favourite choice for pool owners around the globe.

The Triton Neo is not just quick to fit but easy to maintain too. Routine cleaning and backwashing are quick and safe. A ‘swingaway’ diffuser makes for easy access when servicing, deep cleaning or with wintering.

Outstanding water clarity is ensured by a 360-degree diffuser which evenly spreads the water across a perfectly flat filtering bed. Below the sand, lateral tubes further filter out particles larger than 40 microns.

With the option of ClearPro – a patented technology by Pentair – there’s also the

option to reach a very fine level of filtration, four times better than with a conventional sand filter.

With its unique, seamless moulded shell of glass reinforced resin, the Triton Neo’s outer shell is immune from corrosion and products within the range are justifiably known as some of the toughest pool filters on the market.

With top or side mount valve configurations available, there’s a models for every application.

New for 2022, SCP UK introduced the SuperPool TC side mount filters. Available in a range of sizes, these products are a laminated filter manufactured with polyester resin and fibreglass. Equipped with collectors of 1” diameter and diffuser of highly resistant PVC and PP plastic, they are fitted with pressure gauge, manual air and water purge valves and a side-mount 6-way multiport valve with filter, backwash, rinse, recirculate, waste and closed options.

Behind The Scenes
Some of the most important products that lie at the heart of any efficient water cleansing system are those which are associated with filtration. With recent innovations leading to improved performance and a reduction in water use, filters are one of the first places to start looking at when it comes to combining effective water management and making significant cost savings. This issue, we take a closer look at some of the filters that are on offer

EVOQUA’S DEFENDER® FP-SERIES –IDEAL FOR SMALLER COMMERCIAL POOL INSTALLATIONS

Last year, Evoqua Water Technologies introduced the Defender® FP-Series regenerative media filtration (RMF) system which has been designed to deliver maximum performance for swim schools, health clubs and other small to medium size commercial aquatics venues.

The filters were developed by Neptune Benson, a leading provider of RMF technology who have over 60 years of experience serving the commercial aquatics market.

This next generation Defender® FP series targets smaller pools than the original Defender® line, bringing the same superior performance, quality and product support to a new segment of pool owners who are committed to providing their guests with exceptional water quality with the lowest operational costs.

Owners of these smaller facilities can achieve significant operational savings as compared to conventional sand filtration, including up to 90% less water wasted in backwashing, 50% less energy consumption, and 30% less chemical usage – while achieving unparalleled water quality and clarity. In addition, the amount of space required

for the Defender® FP-Series filtration systems is approximately 75% less than the space required for conventional filtration systems. Designed with advanced modelling tools and validated through extensive laboratory and field testing, the FP-Series filter is suitable for applications requiring flow rates between 107-300 gallons per minute (2468 m3/hr) of filtration. The FP-Series also incorporates their latest cleaning technology called the PowerBump™ system which greatly reduces maintenance and increases reliability.

Defender® Regenerative Media Filters utilise an intuitive HMI graphic interface for controlling and monitoring all of its operations. The all new controller features a high resolution animated graphic display (HMI), advanced communication, data logging and remote monitoring capabilities.

ACHIEVE FILTRATION HARMONY WITH AN OC-1 FILTER SOLUTION FROM CERTIKIN

For new filter installations, an OC-1 filter is the obvious choice. Available exclusively

in the UK from Certikin there is a range of filters available that come supplied complete with the lightweight OC-1 media. The filters are specially designed to work in perfect harmony with it and complement the amazing advantages this unique media provides.

As well as being popular across domestic installations, OC-1 Media also excels in the commercial sector. The Certikin SLX range of commercial filters are the workhorse of a commercial pool and with a wide range covering sizes from 1.05m through to 3.00m, and options for laterals and nozzles with various pressure ranges and accessories, any pool can be catered for. The standard SLX lateral version comes at 2.5 bar rating with commercial laser cut 50mm laterals making them robust for the commercial environment and all backed up with a ten-year warranty.

Potential savings in running costs come from the ability to reduce pump speeds and reduce backwashing. Add to that the advantage for new installations of the filter arriving with the media already installed and you can see that OC-1 is the obvious choice for the commercial application.

For those that prefer sand or glass media, the Vision range of domestic bobbin wound filters from Certikin are some of the most reliable and popular on the market. Using the latest in fibreglass winding technology, they are available in top and side mount versions, the latter of which comes with the patented 10” lid, making servicing quick and easy. Backed up by an impressive ten-year full tank warranty, the unique design also features a see-through valve mounting ring for top mount models that allows a clear view of filtration and backwashing during operation.

DURABLE CARTRIDGE AND SAND SOLUTIONS FROM ZODIAC

Through UK distributor Lighthouse, the Zodiac brand offers various filtration options including eco-friendly and ultra-efficient cartridge filters, plus simple and durable sand (or glass) filters.

Zodiac MS Filters are easy-to-maintain, hard wearing and durable filters with a bright blue exterior which is easy to keep clean.

The fibreglass-reinforced laminated polyester tank body carries a ten year warranty and can be used with both sand or glass filter media.

Zodiac’s ‘Crystal Clear’ glass filter media offers finer filtration and is easy to maintain.

The MS range starts at 475mm diameter with a flow rate of 8m3/hr and steps up through the 530mm, 650mm, 800mm up to the 950mm tank which is capable of handling up to 30m3/hr. All have a maximum working pressure of 2.5 bar.

They use an industry standard domestic multiport valve: 6-way side mount valve (filtration, backwash, rinse, drain, circulation, closed) and come with a pressure gauge which is fitted to the top cover using a T-shape adaptor threaded into the lid, which allows for an air release vent to be incorporated.

WATERCO MICRON SMDD, SPDD AND MD FILTERS NOW 4 BAR AS STANDARD

In recent decades, Waterco Micron commercial media filters have become a go-to for filtration system designers worldwide.

From swimming pools to desalination plants, from fish farms to sewage treatment – the combination of high quality and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, highly cost-effective lifetime servicing costs, minimal downtime and continued investment in research and development has earned Waterco their well-deserved place at the top of the list of many a consultant’s equipment specification list.

Waterco offer Micron filters in a range of maximum operating pressure ratings: 2.5 bar; 4 bar; 6 bar; and 8 bar models have been available for some time, the range has more recently been extended to 10 bar, opening up a whole new range of opportunities within more specialist water treatment applications.

Swimming pool filtration systems typically operate at the lower end of this scale, with 2.5 bar being more than the adequate maximum for most. Waterco has observed a shift in the design requirements of consultants operating at the premium end of the market. A filter should of course be able to withstand being over-pressurised for a short period. However, rarely taken into account is the detrimental effect this can have on a freshly manufactured GRP filter. Fibreglass resins can take many weeks (dependent on atmospheric conditions) to harden to their maximum strength and stress the filter shells so soon after manufacture

can cause micro-fissures to fracture the shell almost imperceptibly, and could ultimately shorten the service life of the filter.

As a result of this shift in the industry, Waterco has decided to lead the way by offering all Micron SMDD (lateral underdrains), SPDD (nozzle plate underdrains), and MD (horizontal) filters in 4 bar as standard. This upgrade is being offered without any connected price increase as a demonstration of Waterco’s ongoing commitment to leading the market in premium quality water filtration equipment.

WATERCO FILTRATION PROVIDES CRYSTAL CLEAR POOL WATER CASE STUDY

Locals Kate and Ben Brown operate Turley Farm Barns, with holiday lets and a traditional Cotswold stone barn beautifully restored as an entertainment venue.

Ben was introduced to the natural beauty of a chemicalfree pool by his cousin and chose to have a 250m3 rectangular pool designed and built for the site. A large regeneration area where impurities are absorbed by specialist plants was included where nutrients and harmful bacteria are destroyed by natural water organisms.

Assisting greatly with the filtration process are a Waterco

Exotuff 702 bead filter, 2 x Aquamite 1hp pumps and a MC16 MultiCyclone – a combination ideal for natural pools and ponds.

“The Exotuf is far superior mechanically and biologically to anything else on the market while the Aquamite pumps are ideal for recirculation systems used in conjunction with ponds and water features due to its compact design and high degree of energy efficiency,” explained Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher.

Waterco’s award-winning MultiCyclone removes debris through the process of centrifugal filtration prior to reaching the Exotuf filter, which is considered a market leader due to its sturdy tank design as well as unique

lateral arrangement and water distribution headers.

“This ensures the best

mechanical and biological filtration is achieved at all times,” added Tony.

ENHANCEMENTS

MAKE ASTRALPOOL’S VIC FILTERS A POPULAR COMMERCIAL CHOICE

Available from AstralPool UK, Vic bobbin wound filters are the company’s most popular option for commercial projects.

Featuring a new and innovative screw-top lid with quick-locking mechanism for easy access. The lid closes directly onto the filter body, eliminating the need for intermediary parts such as neck collars, rings etc. and offers straightforward access to the interior as well as saving time when opening the filter lid. Other characteristics and enhancements include:

• The incorporation of the air purge into the top filter lid itself, ensuring total air elimination from the filter.

• Newly designed, larger and more resistant ABS collector arms.

• Quicker water drainage and air relief due to larger diameter purges (Ø 1”).

• An increase in the distance between the top of the sand bed and diffuser head to ensure better water distribution during the filtration stage and to avoid sand spilling into the overflow during the washing stage.

• A filter bed height 1m.

Assembly is quick too, due to a lack of screws combined with innovative threaded flange connections. With this bolt-free system, the risk of occasional seepage through screw holes has been avoided as well as the accompanying weakening of the area. Similarly, oxidisation problems are eliminated due to the absence of metallic parts and assembly is simplified and thus much quicker.

Thanks to the increased diameter of the collector arms, the elimination of intermediary joints and longer screw threads injected into the tubes, AstralPool have

managed to achieve less load loss. Each filter is the same size as the corresponding collector arm, thus eliminating the need for intermediary joints.

Available in RAL 9002 (grey), Vic filters are backed by fantastic aftersales and technical support from AstralPool UK who will effectively manage and correctly diagnose correct spares replacements where necessary.

EXCLUSIVITY THAT’S BUILT TO LAST – THE NORSUP SUPRA FILTER

In 2018 Bosta UK launched their exclusive Norsup range of pool equipment, designed solely for swimming pool installers and showroom retailers. The Norsup brand stands for quality, reliable equipment at competitive prices and extended warranty periods too. Since its introduction, the range has continued to develop and within it, the Norsup Supra can be found – a bespoke designed sand filter that has been developed specifically with the installer/user in mind. An oversized inspection lid has been used to allow very easy maintenance of the Supra filter and facilitates sand changes out without any difficulty.

The company worked hard to produce a filter that offers guaranteed performance too. Made of sturdy fibreglass-reinforced polyester, these units have a Praher 6-way valve included and have been tested at pressures far exceeding their competitors is

why they are able to offer an extremely high working pressure of up to 3.75 bar, meaning installers and owners can feel safe in the knowledge that these UV-resistant filters are built to last. To back this up, they are offered with a ten year warranty on the tank and an incredible five year valve warranty.

The company have ensured that the filter looks impressive too with a high quality gel coated finish in metallic grey which also matches their Norsup pump and heat pump to give a modern finish to any plant room. Bosta also recommend using grey PVC pipe to give a professional looking finish to any plant room design.

For exceptional performance, warranty back-up service and promotion materials, the Norsup filter range is likely to be high on the list of choices for all installers and pool showroom retailers.

“You Are Caller Number… 24 In The Queue.”

Ican remember when ‘customer service’ was the watchword of every successful business.

Business gurus and heads of industry drilled into us all that we should put the customer first and, if we did that, all would be well.

Back in the day you found the number, picked up the phone, dialled the number and within less than a minute you were talking to someone who’s job it was to help you; and that was a job they could actually do.

Then one day you dialled the number and you were told that Blogs and Co, or whoever, were currently experiencing a very high level of calls and perhaps if you were to send them an email or visit their website then that might be better for all concerned. The next time you rang you were told that your call was important to them. Which was nice to know.

The last time you rang you were put on hold and played a long list of sales messages that left you nostalgic for the old days of a looped version of Greensleeves. You are still on that call. You are still… number 24 in the queue.

into a state of meltdown if profits dip. Which is fine, but I actually haven’t noticed my pension pot getting any bigger.

But I’m sure all that money is being looked after by someone with my best interests at heart. I’d ring them up to check but… you know.

MEANWHILE, ACROSS THE POND

HAS THAT PIQUED YOUR INTEREST?

For a very long time we have lived in an economy where money was cheap; low interest rates and low mortgage rates. That is starting to look like it is no longer the case. Combine that with bigger bills for energy and just about everything else and things start to look challenging for individuals and for businesses.

Q8 WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WERE THE THINGS THAT HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR BUSINESS THIS YEAR?

For the last 12 years this has been a question in the Wet Leisure Industry Survey. Back in the ‘good old days’ it was always a fight between the weather and the Internet as to which of those two demons had the biggest effect. Last year COVID won by a clear margin.

What will we see this year? Energy costs? The cost of living? Ukraine? Lettuce? It’s hard to predict.

THIS IS CAUSED BY?

(YOU MAY TICK MORE THAN ONE BOX)

Spiralling energy costs and increases in the cost of living have been influenced by the global events that we have all witnessed, but I also think a lot of companies have seen an opportunity to cut costs and increase profits.

Being profitable and profiteering used to be seen as very different things but I think the lines have become blurred now. And who are we told is to blame? If you believe the media, we are. Our pension fund managers apparently insist that profits increase every year. The markets, or so we are told, will go

Chief Twit Elon Musk finally gets into the birds nest and, like a cuckoo, rearranges the board. Spaceships, electric cars and now Twitter; it seems reminiscent of someone buying all the toys he couldn’t have as a child.

America’s other wunderkind, Zuckerberg, has lost US$71bln this year. The Metaverse looks like being virtually a good idea rather than actually a good idea.

It will be impossible to know unless you, and everyone else, take the survey. There are just 20 questions and it generally takes less than ten minutes, but there are lots of comment boxes and if you want to leave a lot of comments – and its great when people do – you can spend as long as you want.

There are lots of good reasons why you should take part in the Industry Survey, but this quote from a couple of years ago sums it up pretty well. “We think the survey is a great idea and use the printed report to help guide our marketing strategy, as it does seem to have a finger on the pulse of the industry. There are links to the survey on goldenc.com and wetleisure.com as well as on emails in your inbox and updates on social media. You can respond on line or by a paper form.

No telephone option is available though. If you would like to talk to us about that, you are caller number… 24 in the queue.
