SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.
In this issue, we feature a full preview of the annual trade show and take a closer look at what visitors can expect to find when they arrive at this year’s event. It’s shaping up to be one of the best ever and with a milestone anniversary to celebrate, I have a feeling that its one not to be missed. SPN will have a stand at SPATEX so we hope to see many of our readers there.

There’s no doubt that 2016 will go down in history as a monumental year for many reasons. There’s also no doubt that it was another good and extremely busy year for the majority of the trade too, but what could the next 12 months hold for our industry? Well if the start of this year is anything to go by, it seems like yet another busy year as from my experience, the last three weeks have been nothing short of manic across the board!
Also in this issue, we put the spotlight on a number of other key topics for the new season. After recording another successful year, we take a closer look at a number of innovations and new models in the hot tub sector, plus we take a look at various options for water sanitisation using different technologies. We’ve dedicated a feature specifically to the various UV systems that are available too. Still in the plant room, we take a closer look at products that are providing powerful circulation with our pool and spa pumps feature and then venture out into the pool to look at ten products that will take the effort out of pool cleaning in 2017.
With the festive break now a distant memory and the New Year now in full swing, it’s now time to look forward and as an industry start focusing on what lies ahead.
Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams examines the effect on businesses of online ordering, free deliveries and returns while there’s expert advice for swim schools and other organisations from STA’s Robbie Philips who are considering having their own pool built.
And in the UK, the first major event of any year is the SPATEX exhibition which is returning to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena 31 January to 2 February.
There’s also useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA including a look at the many benefits membership offers to businesses plus a look at the work of PIP.
For anyone looking for new products, services, some inspiration or perhaps to improve their knowledge and understanding, SPATEX is the place to be. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the event helps to keep the trade up to speed with the latest technologies and trends and is a must attend for any successful business. The three day show also offers a unique opportunity to network with a wide range of colleagues from all corners of the industry and personally, I’ve often found it provides a useful insight into the year ahead.
Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with this issue of SPN covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading it, here’s to another successful year and I hope to see you at SPATEX!

Sundance Pools’ ‘Jetswim’ Features In Assassin’s Creed Movie Aylesbury-based fibreglass pool specialists Sundance Pools UK Ltd have revealed that their Jetswim 4 metre pool was used in the filming of the just-released movie Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender. Assassin’s Creed is an action adventure film based on the popular video game franchise of the same name and the Jetswim appears in the film as an ethereal ‘recovery pool’ in a laboratory. The Sundance Pools team delivered the 4 metre one-piece pool to the worldfamous 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire back in November 2015. They then worked closely with the film production company’s art directors, special effects and construction teams and remained on site during three days of filming to monitor pool temperature and water balance. Manufactured in a custom grey colour with a bespoke filtration system, the above-ground spec pool was installed onto a platform built by the Assassin’s Creed construction team. The special effects team fitted bespoke lighting to the pool bottom and a stainless-steel border. Company Director, Ed West said: “Our time working with Pinewood was a fantastic experience and unlike any project we have encountered before. Collaborating so closely with a film production company, timeframes
were extremely precise and everything had to run like absolute clockwork, from delivery and collection timings to water temperature and chemical balances within the water. Filming days are long and studio time is extremely precious, so we were available and on-hand to deal with all aspects of installation and pool maintenance 24/7.”
Having had its 15 minutes of fame, the custom grey Jetswim 4 metre pool is now back in the possession of Sundance Pools and is for sale. Sundance Pools 01296 715071 www.sundancepools.co.uk

NEWS CONSTRUCTION FIRM KIER SET FOR £20M CHELMSFORD PROJECT Chelmsford City Council in Essex has signed a preconstruction agreement with Kier for the £20m redevelopment of its ice rink and leisure centre. Under the agreement, the council plans to have a 25m swimming pool and other facilities built which integrate with the existing Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre facilities. A planning application for the new leisure complex has also been submitted and will be considered by Chelmsford City Council’s Planning Committee in March. If approved, construction of the new facility is planned to start in July 2017, with the opening scheduled for the end of 2018.
ABERDEENSHIRE LEISURE CENTRE PLANS APPROVED Work on an £8.5m leisure facility in Banchory could begin in the summer after Aberdeenshire Council granted planning permission for the development. The centre will consist of a six-lane swimming pool suitable for competitions, training pool, three-court sports hall, fitness suite and other facilities. The local authority is putting £7.8m into the facility, with the remaining £700,000 being raised by Banchory Sports Village Trust. Chair of the council’s education, learning and leisure committee, councillor Alison Evison, said: “The granting of planning permission is a major step forward for what is a very exciting project that will give a real boost to sports groups in Banchory and the surrounding area.” Keith Mair, Chairman of Banchory Sports Village Trust added: “So far we’ve raised £670,000 and that wouldn’t have happened without the fantastic effort from all the clubs who have been strong supporters of what we’re doing.” Work on the new centre is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

£13m Dual Purpose Leisure Arena Opens Its Doors State-of-the-art leisure facilities and civic offices are combined under one roof at the new £13m Rushcliffe Arena at West Bridgford, Nottingham. Two hundred of Rushcliffe Borough Council’s staff have moved to first floor offices at the Arena which replaces the leisure provision at Rushcliffe Leisure Centre and the previous Rushcliffe Arena before its redevelopment. Operated by Parkwood Leisure, the new leisure facilities include a six lane, 25-metre main pool and a learner pool with family beach. Glen Hall, Parkwood Leisure’s Operations Director, said: “Rushcliffe Arena is a fantastic building equipped with superb leisure and
recreation facilities. I have no doubt that it will prove extremely popular with the local community – the initial response has been brilliant.” Cllr Neil Clarke, Leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: “This is a momentous time. Not only have we enhanced sports provision in the borough, but we’re also reducing our on-going running costs, making more efficient use of tax payers’ money. Our new, purpose-built facility works for a modern council and also meets the needs of the community.” Plans were originally approved in May 2014 with work to rebuild Rushcliffe Arena beginning in September 2015. The council has started the process of selling its former offices, an eightstorey, landmark building overlooking the River Trent.

Dangerous Goods Training For 2017 At a recent Water Hygiene Training Day, one of the attendees who was a service engineer for a wellrespected company said he had recently taken a ton of HTH in his transit van down to a public swimming pool. He did not realise that he could have lost his driving licence for that, been fined heavily and so could his employer as the driver did not hold a licence to transport under ADR (Accord europeen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route). With the latest law coming into effect back in July 2015, it should be apparent that anybody involved in unloading, storage, handling and transportation of Dangerous Goods needs to be trained. For those in need of Dangerous Goods knowledge, Howard Gosling is organising a number of training days around the country advising attendees how to keep within the law. The course will also include information on the Global Harmonisation System and the fact that the names of some chemicals are changing. Every company present at these courses will be provided with a CD/memory stick enabling them to pass on information to other people in their organisation and attendees will receive a Certificate of Training.
BISHTA and SPATA Members can claim mutual trading as one of the benefits of their membership and there is a special dispensation for those with businesses, provided they are purchasing their chemicals from a fellow member. Members of ISPE should be able to do the same but all members need training. Previous attendees have found great benefit in attending courses which have, in many cases, saved them money and in some instances, attendees have learned how to avoid the need to employ an ADR driver and still comply with the law. Typical commercial Dangerous Goods courses start from approximately £300, however the Dangerous Pool and Spa Chemical course will cost £165 + VAT for the first person and £145 + VAT for subsequent attendees from the same company. Prices include coffee, buffet lunch and a certificate. You can register your interest in Dangerous Goods Training by sending name, contact phone number and location to: howard@ poolandspaadvice.co.uk Pool & Spa Advice 01935 389069 www.poolandspaadvice.co.uk

And when it comes to providing this perfect pool formula, it seems NIVEKO appear to tick all the boxes. This stunning 10m x 2.5m Top Level Skimmer pool from NIVEKO certainly ensured one happy customer when it was installed in the garden of a private residence in the UK last year. The delighted client, Mr Randall said: “As soon as I’d decided to get myself a pool

at home, I contacted at least five firms and eventually opted for HTP Inc Ltd, as their range and services appealed to me. They considered what I wanted, which was for the pool to be used for sports as well as simply for pleasure. The NIVEKO pool was the obvious choice, as it had so many advantages over a conventional pool: a clean, smooth and durable surface, the option to go for any shape and, thanks to the thermal insulation which minimises heat loss, is also cheaper to run. “I designed my NIVEKO pool exactly how I wanted it, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I
recommend NIVEKO and HTP to anyone considering buying a swimming pool.”

£14m Investment For Warwickshire Leisure Centres Plans to redevelop St Nicholas Park and Newbold Comyn Leisure Centres in Warwick have now begun on site following the green light by Warwick District councillors late last year. A £14m investment by the Council is being used to fund much-needed improvements and upgrades to two centres in Leamington Spa and Warwick, with a second phase of upgrades to follow for Kenilworth. Councillor Michael Coker, Portfolio Holder for Culture at Warwick District Council commented: “I am delighted that work will now commence, allowing our residents to enjoy the brand new, state-of-the-art facilities by the end of this year. “Proposed designs for the new facilities are the result of detailed design work, with input from architects, Sport England and council
officers, and reflect the outcome of public consultation undertaken in January and February this year.” The centre at Newbold Comyn will see its swimming pool refurbished alongside the addition of wet changing rooms for the pool and shower area. Plans also include a new 100-station gym, improved disabled facilities and a brand new extension for other leisure activities. Running alongside the Newbold Comyn redevelopment, St Nicholas Park leisure centre is also being extended to house new facilities. The swimming pool changing rooms will be completely replaced and new changing rooms will serve the gym and studios alongside various refurbishments to the swimming pool. Building contractor Speller Metcalfe, who

No Coal, Just OC-1 to Newcastle!
When the Alan Shearer Activity Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne approached Whitewaters Ltd to replace an old hydrotherapy pool, the pool specialist, turned to Certikin and in particular, their trailblazing new filter media – OC-1. Founded by the retired footballer on the outskirts of Newcastle, the Centre is a specialist recreational, sensory
and social centre for disabled people catering for a wide spectrum of need. It is the only short break centre in the North East with its own on-site activity centre, set within acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Having seen better days, Whitewaters set about stripping out the old hydrotherapy pool, replacing it with a £500,000 state-of-the-art facility.
Centre member, three-year-old Jessica Robertson cut the ribbon with ex-footballer Alan Shearer, and couldn’t wait to be the first person to try out the new pool
14 February 2017 SPN 12&14_SPN_Feb_17_News_General.indd 14
Six months in design, the construction took a further six months to complete. Twice the size of the original hydrotherapy pool, it offers a mix of fun and relaxation with interactive mood lighting, water and music features plus an array of water features that include a Certikin water cannon, a fluvo air pad and a fluvo swimjet. Managing Director of Whitewaters, Mick Guthrie says: “The new hydrotherapy pool offers all the grandeur of a top quality spa, but it also plays a serious role in providing therapeutic benefits to disabled
people of all ages.” Water quality is, of course, of vital importance and at the heart of this pool’s filtration system is the ground breaking OC-1 filter media for which Certikin is the world’s exclusive distributor. Unique in its methodology and performance, OC-1 works through settlement as opposed to entrapment, and harnesses the recent advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers. Mick reported: “The pool has been running for over a month now and the water clarity is crystal clear. Being extremely lightweight, OC-1 is so much easier than any other filter media to handle and work with. Although it’s early days, I am highly impressed with OC-1 and its distinct benefits.” Whitewaters Ltd 0191 5512048 www.whitewaters.co.uk

British-made Remains Focus For Plastica’s 45th Anniversary 2017 is Plastica’s 45th year of trading as a UK manufacturer and distributor in the swimming pool industry. British-made pool liners, a range of covers and stainless steel reel systems remain their core business. This year, the company will also be adding UK-made swimming pool pumps to its manufacturing operations. The company, one of Britain’s leading independent providers of swimming pools and accessories, manufacturers from a 13,000 square metre factory. Located on a six acre site in St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex, it is home to more than 70 staff that focus on producing products of the highest quality and providing exceptional customer service. Products are created using an impressive combination of state-of-theart factory equipment and skilled staff crafting handmade parts. Their manufacturing facility produces wooden pools, a range of solar, heat retention and debris covers, reels, pool liners, Relax branded water treatments plus stainless steel and plastic items, such as ladders and pipework. The company has continuously evolved since its inception in 1972 by boyhood friends and co-founders, Edward Campbell-Salmon and Peter Adlington. The initial business manufactured winter debris covers from a rundown workroom in London. After three years they moved to larger premises in Hastings, East Sussex. Their entrepreneurial skills soon grew the business into producing heat retaining covers in 1974 after the oil crisis and pool liners during the hot summer of 1976. This was soon followed by solar covers and reel systems. Edward commented: “We have manufactured and installed well over 1,350 commercial cover and reel systems from Olympic sized competition pools to
freeform fun pools. Our customers benefit from our products having unique specification advantages as standard. This is real added value for our clients. For example, on our commercial pool covers we provide hemmed edges, double welded seams down the length of pool covers (not the width), reinforced leading edges and stainless steel reels. All resulting in less stress on the covers to prevent fraying, delamination and tearing, as well as a reduction in general wear and tear and ease of maintenance.” In 1988 they launched the Extreme™ Pool Lining System – where a reinforced 1.5mm thick material is fitted on site, making it ideal for new pools or the refurbishment of leaking concrete and tiled pools. A few years later, in 1996, they introduced Relax, a brand of water treatment goods which remain one of the market leaders (and which are also available as ‘own brand’). The business moved again in 2001, to its current premises in St Leonards-onSea, due to the need for more production space. In January 2017, Plastica acquired from the Balboa Water Group the tried and tested Argonaut and A.G. Pump range – products which were being produced in the USA and Europe. Following the acquisition, all moulding and assembly will be repatriated to the UK manufacturing plant in East Sussex as soon as possible – great news for British manufacturing. The products are purchased in over 20 countries with swimming pool and other industries, increasing worldwide sales for Plastica. The business believes in continuous investment, and over the years, has invested heavily in its manufacturing technology and IT infrastructure. After 45 years, Plastica remains very motivated and is looking forward to working with customers in 2017 and beyond. Plastica 01424 857802 www.plasticapools.net

NEWS UNCLEAR FUTURE FOR FORFAR SWIMMING POOL The future of Forfar’s Swimming Pool and Lochside Leisure Centre is still uncertain following the opening of the new Forfar Community Campus. Both facilities will shut at the start of February with the new Campus opening for business later in the month. A spokesman for Angus Council said: “When any of our properties become surplus to service requirements, we will look at alternative council use of the buildings, marketing them for sale, exploring Community Asset Transfer opportunities or site re-development opportunities.” The Forfar Swimming Pool also know as the Forfar Baths opened in 1910. The baths were gifted to the town by philanthropist and benefactor Andrew Carnegie from Fife, who at one stage, was the second-richest man in the world. The Baths have undergone a number of re-developments over the years, with the relocation of the changing rooms, the creation of a children’s pool, a steam room and sauna and more recently, a new gym.
FAVERSHAM POOL SET FOR £200K REFURBISHMENT Faversham swimming pool in Kent is about to undergo its first major refurbishment in 20 years. Work to replace the deteriorating showers, toilets and changing area will begin this month and is expected to be completed by the end of March. The news came as a relief for thousands of local residents after fears that if money was not found for the building work, the facility would be at risk of closing. With the help of a £150,000 grant from Swale Borough Council and the pool’s own reserves, they have been able to commission the refurbishment project that will cost around £200,000.

PWE Deliver Energy Cost Savings And A Reduced Carbon Footprint Pure World Energy (PWE), specialists in energy management, has provided an on site clean energy solution at Woughton Leisure Centre, the largest multi-sport site in Milton Keynes. The installation of a single C65 Capstone micro turbine® combined heat and power (CHP) unit will deliver guaranteed savings of up to £210,000 for the company over the next 15 years and reduce the facility’s carbon footprint. Woughton Leisure Centre’s operator 1Life Management Solutions appointed PWE as its
preferred energy partner, working in partnership with Milton Keynes District Council. PWE initially carried out a detailed site analysis to identify immediate savings for consumption and carbon emissions. Having recently benefitted from a £1.5m investment, this community-focused leisure centre which includes a 20 metre swimming pool, is already achieving immediate savings in energy costs and carbon emissions, without any financial outlay or additional resource. Investment in the new low maintenance energy system, owned and operated by PWE, will see the reduction of up to 130 metric tonnes of CO2 and generate up to 370,000 kWh of electricity and 680,000 kWh of heat per annum. The new CHP unit that replaced the old defective boiler, is also saving the centre additional repair or replacement costs. Pure World Energy 0844 848 0550 www.pureworldenergy.com

Specialist Consultancy Aims To Assist Wet Leisure SMEs After a number of years working as the Marketing Director for a Scottish pool builder, Nigel Taylor has set up a business development and management consultancy with a view to providing support and assistance to companies wishing to expand, develop and/or diversify their business. Nigel Taylor BDMC Ltd will primarily focus on: • Providing existing business reviews and current market analysis • Identification of area/s of potential growth • Developing business plans and implementing growth strategies. This is a unique business within a relatively specialised UK market, which has been based on the universal premise that businesses are unlikely to want to fail, and that growth/development of these companies tend to be limited by business owners being too close to the business. In most cases the business owners find it difficult to step back from the day to day running of the business and as a result are unable to take a wider view of both the business, its place in the market and opportunities for stability and growth.Nigel Taylor BDMC Ltd is well placed to serve this market as Nigel has been involved in the UK’s sport, leisure and construction industries for 26 years and has over 9 years experience within the wholesale and distribution industry. “The advantage of employing my services are, firstly my previous successes, the wide ranging experience gained and my professional approach, and secondly, from a cost effective point of view. Employing the services of a reputable specialist consultant with a very clear focus on business development, who has the ability and advantage of being both committed to the success of, but yet still being independent, would be far less costly and far more efficient than employing (and having to train, develop and guide) additional staff.” Nigel Taylor BDMC Ltd 07949 034288 www.nigeltaylor-bdmc.co.uk

Dripool Prices Held… Due to BREXIT! According to Dripool Ltd, their automatic covers are hardly exposed to the falling pound, unlike a large percentage of the rest of the market. This means both their UK and oversees customers benefit from even greater value for money! Over the last 30 years, as UK based dedicated designers and manufacturers of automatic covers, Dripool have developed a supply chain of local, independent and high tech companies, enabling them to refine their design and manufacturing techniques in line with state-of-the-art levels of technology. This has ensured all systems meet Dripool’s exacting standards of quality and reliability. One example of this is the introduction of laser profiling, which has removed design constraints and allows Dripool to create shapes that were previously, totally uneconomical. Another significant area of enhancement is the use of micro controllers. These devices facilitate the use of one programmable control board for all current and future designs and can be retrofitted to provide continued support for systems installed within the last 30 years. In summary, regardless of your thoughts on BREXIT, the good news is ‘buying the best of British’ has never made more sense and with a safety cover to suit any shape and type of pool and with even greater reliability plus value for money, Dripool are expecting 2017 to be a very busy year! How Clear Is Your Swimming Pool?
Crystal clear pool water is essential for both the safety of and appeal to the bather but how should it be measured? The traditional way is deciding whether the bottom of the pool can be seen at the ‘deep’ end. However,
22 February 2017 SPN 22-25_SPN_Feb_17_Prod_News.indd 22
is this sufficient? Measuring the turbidity of the water would be a more suitable and traceable way of making sure you comply with the PWTAG recommendations of 0.5NTU (Nephlometric Turbidity Units). The compact infrared Lovibond® TB 210 IR Turbidity meter offers a convenient, handheld and easy way of measuring turbidity to ensure you comply
to these recommendations and offer a safe swimming environment. The unit measures the scattered light at an angle of 90°, as stipulated in EN ISO 7027 and will provide 600 tests without battery change. Lovibond Tintometer 01980 664800 www.lovibondwater.com

A Crystal Clear Solution From Golden Coast
OC-1 Range Expands With New Filter Options Two new filters now complement the OC-1 filtration media that is taking the industry by storm. Introduced last year, OC-1 is stealing a march on traditional media with its outstanding benefits now eclipsing the likes of sand, gravel and glass. The two new filters have been specifically designed to work in perfect harmony with OC-1 media for both domestic and commercial installations. For new installations the OC-1 Filters are the obvious choice. The commercial version can be supplied complete with the OC-1 media already preloaded and allows quicker installation and avoids having to load sand or glass into the tanks on site. The domestic version comes ready for the media to be installed and is easy to ship and quick to install. The OC-1 Filter range covers all applications from small domestic to the largest commercial installations. OC-1 media really excels in the commercial sector. Potential savings in running costs come from the ability to
reduce pump speeds and from reduced backwashing. Add to that the advantage for new installations of the filter arriving with the media already installed and you can see that OC-1 is the obvious choice for the commercial application. OC-1 filtration media is suitable for use on all pools and spas, be they domestic, commercial or hydrotherapy. It is easy to convert an existing sand filter for use with OC-1 with a simple lateral modification and take advantage of its benefits over traditional media such as sand or glass. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “Since the launch of OC-1 we have had great feedback on the product and have good results with upgrading of existing sand filters and new installations going in every week. The growing popularity of the media is really starting to show.” Certikin International 01993 777200 www.oc-1filtrationmedia.com
Automatic chemical dosing can be a blessing for pool owners and a great profit centre for pool companies, but not all companies can deliver the dedicated, specialist knowledge or resources required. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “The appeals of automatic dosing for owners are crystal clear: saving time on testing, avoiding dosage mistakes and ensuring clean, clear water. However, the extra staff, knowledge and training required to meet this growing need can often seem more hassle than it’s worth – despite the potential profits. “There’s been a clear growth in demand for automatic pool dosing systems, but it’s not always been the easiest opportunity for the industry to respond to. And that’s why we developed Crystal.” Crystal provides a simple solution which allows pool companies to offer automatic dosing… without increasing overheads or causing headaches. Crystal’s team of experienced engineers are equipped to handle the whole process: from conducting a free on-site survey to specifying equipment and service requirements right through to delivering a planned maintenance schedule. Jamie concluded: “Crystal has been designed to make it easier for you and for your customers. It really is the best of both worlds.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

From a choice of sturdy brooms, rakes and scoops to a large selection of vacuum heads, the Magnor® range covers most daily pool cleaning requirements. Attention to detail is a hallmark of the range. Magnor® vacuum heads are well balanced and weighted to ensure that they sit solidly on the pool floor in operation. On most vacuum head models, the wheels are adjustable, helping the pool professional to cope with varying operating conditions. wall thickness to ensure sturdiness when being dragged through water. Magnor® brooms, rakes, skimmers and vacuum heads are also compatible with most poles available on the market. So, purchasing a Magnor® accessory does not necessarily mean buying a new pole as well – although doing so gives the user the unrivalled robustness and sturdiness of a heavy duty Magnor® pole. Although the brand’s pool maintenance equipment is robust and durable, accidents do happen. For that reason, Magnor® spare parts and consumables are available, such as vacuum head wheels and side brushes, leaf skimmer nets, handle brackets, leaf rake bags, skimmer socks and refill reagents for the test kits. This policy ensures that Magnor® equipment gives its user the longest possible service life and best value for money.

Energy Efficiency A Priority For Award Winning Pool A luxury outdoor residential swimming pool, which is efficiently heated by a Calorex heat pump, recently landed Falcon Pools with an industry award. The Surrey-based company’s brief was to create a natural looking swimming pool that would blend in well with the traditional surroundings of the client’s property. The owner also wanted the pool to be as energy efficient as possible. With this in mind, Falcon Pools specified a Pro-Pac 22X single phase heat pump from Calorex. Designed and manufactured in the UK under ISO9001 compliance, the highly innovative Pro-Pac heat pumps are specifically designed for swimming pool heating and are capable of providing a pool with up to five units of absorbed heat for every one unit paid for. “We opted for the Calorex Pro-Pac as the customer required to use the pool from April to September, and this model allows the water to heat up to required swimming temperatures,” explained Lee Woodhams of Falcon Pools. Pro-Pac X heat pumps are ideal for outdoor pool heating or pools with a semi-

permanent enclosure to extend the useable period of a normal outdoor pool, when temperatures are above 5°C. Whereas Pro-Pac Y pumps are suited to heating indoor or outdoor pools all year round and can operate in temperatures as low as -15°C. “In the summer, the heat pump will work at a coefficient of performance (COP) of about 5:1, which means that heat goes into the pool at one fifth of the price of standard rate electricity. Typically, electricity is 12.5p/kWh so heat goes into the pool at 2.5p/kWh,” explained Graham Kneale, H&V Field Sales Manager at Certikin, Calorex’s UK distributor, adding: “In winter, Calorex heat pumps fall to a COP of about 3:1, making the heat into the pool at about 4.2p/kWh – still lower than heating with gas.” Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk Falcon Pools 01932 353040 www.falconpools.co.uk This award-winning pool by Falcon Pools is heated by a Calorex Pro-Pac heat pump

Marquis Grants 700th Wish With An ATV Swim Spa At approximately 18 months old, Chase Fekete was diagnosed with Mowat Wilson Syndrome, which affects his ability to learn and speak as well as impair physical functions. Chase didn’t walk until he was two and a half years old and even now doesn’t have a lot of strength in his legs making it difficult to walk. There is one place where Chase can play with his brother, Jake, without all of the restrictions from his illness – his very own Marquis Aquatic Training Vessel (ATV) swim spa. Chase’s wish marks the 700th wish Marquis has helped to grant through its partnership with Make-A-Wish. “Marquis is making a difference in Chase’s life by helping to grant his spa wish,” said Cheryl Unger, Director of Program Services of
Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York. “This will help Chase and his family enjoy hours and hours of quality time together at home.” “It’s incredibly rewarding that through our hot tubs and swim spas, we are able to add some happiness and improve the well-being of so many children with life-threatening medical conditions,” said John Schrenk, President of Marquis. The ATV-17 Sport is a relatively new addition to the Marquis product line and has been a very popular wish request in the last few years. The ATV swim spa allows children to be mobile and interact at eye level with their families.

Hot Tubs Play Their Part In Domestic Holidays Booking Surge Hoseasons have offered holidays and lodges with hot tubs for a number of years now and it seems their inclusion has helped the domestic holidays specialist see a surge in bookings at the start of the year. The operator saw impressive year-onyear increases with its hot tub lodges ahead by 19%. Hoseasons said it believed consumer concerns over currency fluctuations and the economic impact of BREXIT, combined with the addition of more high-quality lodges with hot tubs as contributing to the impressive rise in bookings. Managing Director Simon Altham said customers were “determined” to have a holiday to look forward to during what could prove to be a difficult year. “Everybody knows that 2017 is shaping up to be a year of uncertainty, but the clear trend for us has been people moving early to guarantee
their getaway and take advantage of some great value deals,” he said. “Hoseason’s new year promotions combined with its commitment to innovation was also a strong factor to the operator’s sales surge, Altham added. “We’ve invested heavily in technology, infrastructure and people over the last 12 months to ensure that we’re able to offer our customers a hassle-free, quick and easy booking experience across all devices, through our contact centre or through one of our high street partners.” From luxury lodges nestled deep in forest glades, to cliff top log cabins with sweeping sea views, the company offers over 2,800 hot tubs in diverse destinations around the UK. Booking a hot tub holiday couldn’t be simpler thanks to a dedicated hot tub website which also includes the top rated destinations as voted for by holidaymakers.

Ultralift? Ultra Good! Golden Coast Introduce New Cover Lifter Golden Coast has announced that it will launch the market’s strongest and most versatile cover lifter at SPATEX 2017. Ultralift, which is available exclusively through Golden Coast’s Essentials Collection of hot tub and spa accessories, is a cover lifter with (virtually) universal appeal. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “When it comes to cover lifters, Ultralift is exactly what the market has been waiting for… “It’s built to an exceptionally high specification and has been intelligently Deckmounted UltraLift
designed for maximum versatility. Whatever a tub’s size, shape or brand – Ultralift offers virtually all a perfect fit. Freestanding? Built-in? In-ground? “With Ultralift, you just need a single cover lifter to meet your customer’s exact needs. This is possible because of its comprehensive mounting options. While the Standard Mount option lets you adjust open cover height to your preference, there’s an Under Mount option that slides under your tub prior to filling – so no need to drill holes in the deck, patio or hot tub surround. “If your customer is looking for easy opening and closing, there’s a Hydraulic Mount option which incorporates gas springs. As well as making access easier, it ensures tub owners find the correct closing position much faster – reducing heat loss from the tub and saving them money.” Further versatility is possible thanks to two conversion kits for Standard Mount options – allowing
for hydraulic lift assist or under mount conversion. Ultralift’s ease of installation also impressed Golden Coast. Jamie explained: “Fitting a cover lifter should be easy, but, in reality, it can throw up some challenges. That’s why we were so impressed by Ultralift’s ease of installation. You can assemble it in less than an hour with just three tools. A drill, screwdriver and an adjustable spanner and you’re there.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
The Coverstar – Not Just For Pools
This beautiful swim spa, installed by Falcon Pools for a well-known television broadcaster, features Certikin’s star of all covers and shows just how functional, versatile and stylish the product is. “With a brief to install a cover for the swim spa that is robust enough to withstand boisterous children and pets, my thoughts turned to one cover … the Coverstar,” said Falcon Pools’ Terry Woodhams. “We have installed numerous Coverstars in the past so have the greatest confidence in them as a safety cover. The product is second to none in terms of quality and their installation is straight-forward and we know that we can always rely on Certikin for advice and guidance should any be required.” Unlike other safety cover suppliers who use an industry standard vinyl, Coverstar use a superior vinyl composite in a range of colours. Whereas most safety cover suppliers use sewn webbing, (which often proves to be the weak area), Coverstar have invented and patented the heat sealed process, which prolongs the life of the cover and improves the overall operation. This is colour matched to the actual Coverstar fabric to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish. Manager of the Automatic Covers division, Jo Catterall said: “The Coverstar safety cover can be made for pools, in-ground spas and hot tubs of most shapes and sizes – please call or email the Automatic Covers team at Certikin for a quote.” Certikin has a large team of factory-trained

engineers to carry out installations, repair work and servicing. They can also make preinstallation site visits to ensure the site is suitable, however, for those wishing to use their own engineers, Certikin can offer some initial training onsite. Kenneth Jacuzzi Dies At Age 75
Ken Jacuzzi, who was the inspiration for the development of the first in-home hydrotherapy pump by his father, Candido Jacuzzi passed away at the start of the year. Candido and his brothers founded what later became Jacuzzi Group Worldwide, due to Ken’s childhood illness in the 1950s. Bob Rowan, CEO of Jacuzzi Group Worldwide said: “It is with great sadness that we have learned of Ken’s passing. He lived his life with grace and great dignity, and was an honourable humanitarian. He was the inspiration of not only the Jacuzzi® Brand, but an entire industry. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife and extended family.” At the age of two, Ken Jacuzzi contracted juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, leaving him bound to a wheelchair for most of his life. Told that young Ken would not live to see his third birthday, his mother encouraged her inventor husband Candido to develop a portable hydrotherapy pump to provide painrelieving hydrotherapy treatments at home. That hydrotherapy pump led to what is known as the Jacuzzi® Brand today.

Happy New Year! BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks back at events at the end of 2016 and highlights a number of key events planned for the first months of the year
W
ith SPATEX 2017 celebrating the 21st anniversary, the event at the Ricoh Arena is again a sellout! It promises to deliver a fantastic showcase for our industry's products and services plus a range of entertainment is on offer for the exhibitors and visitors, with the Industry Gala Dinner hosting the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards on the Tuesday evening and the SPATEX exhibitors party on the Wednesday night! With over 100 exhibitors at the show, the excellent ISPE workshops and a second seminar area offering other important topics from organisations such as PWTAG, education continues to be at the forefront of what SPATEX can provide attendees. Ross Alcock at the ISPE deserves praise for his organisation of the ISPE workshops and thanks are also due to the many other show partners. As mentioned above, during SPATEX, there will be a chance to celebrate the achievements of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, being won by BISHTA and SPATA members this year. All members of the pool, spa and hot tub industry are welcome to attend this event, so come along and celebrate the Award winners (including the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards) and an evening of entertainment, plus there will be the chance to meet British Paralympic Swimmer Ellie Simmonds OBE as she presents our top awards and takes a photocall (thanks to Mark Ramsden at CPC). A huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. Winners of these awards are eligible to be entered into the 2017 European Pool and Spa Awards, and I am delighted to announce that these Awards will be presented at SPATEX 2018. EUSA’s European Pool and Spa Awards for 2016, will be announced at
Forum Piscine in Bologna, Italy this month and details of the winners will be appearing in a future issue of SPN. The role of BISHTA and SPATA is to support the members with information and advice and to assist in the event of any disputes. On pages 36 and 37, there is an article outlining some of the services provided to members. I would like to thank all of the members who kindly provided their feedback in this article, which helps us to give a members perspective on our offering. For prospective members, I hope the article gives you a flavour of the type of support available by joining BISHTA and/or SPATA helping to strengthen the voice of the industry at home and abroad. The revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication is nearing completion, and this document is to be referred to as ‘HSG 282’. The official title of the publication is ‘The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa pool systems’. Once the document is finalised, further news about the impact of the guidance will be made available to the industry. It is crucial that the industry has provided feedback on this important subject and some members have been debating the pros and cons of the advice stated in the 2006 version of ‘Management of Spa Pools’ and the advice that needs to be contained within HSG 282”Having lobbied hard to update the publication, BISHTA and SPATA will expect members to know what is said in the new document and to alert their customers of the guidance contained within it. With changes to the SPATA Standards, a 2017 version will be available shortly for those members that have attended the training sessions (either face to face or online). Additional dates will be provided, subject to a demand for members to learn more about the changes, created by new and revised British and European standards.
Requests for the Electrical Awareness Workshops continues to increase, with the fourth course recently run; there are now 40 people that have benefitted from the information regarding the safe installation of hot tubs. Two more courses are planned to be run, and these are being held in Norfolk and Birmingham on 22 – 23 February and 1 – 2 March respectively. To check for availability and/or to go on a waiting list for the autumn courses, please contact the BISHTA office. On to other matters, and a number of the BSPF (and SPATA) Past Presidents attended Tony Welsby’s Past Presidents Meal, which was held in the beautiful historic City of Chester. The venue was the fabulous Chester Grosvenor hotel and the 23 guests were met by Tony and partner Carole Darbyshire. The meal, provided by Simon Radley, the hotel’s renowned Michelin Star chef, was a great success and well received by all of the guests. I hope that 2017 proves a successful year for you, below you will find some of the key calendar dates to note in the first few months of this year. Safeguarding Your Money
Member Support And Service
Networking Opportunities
The Importance Of Training
Most businesses will at some point have a client that withholds payment from them, and to avoid the issue escalating, it is reassuring to have a free service available called the ‘Stakeholder Account’. This service can be used to help your client pay any monies into a ring-fenced escrow account, that as the business owner, you know will be paid to you when you have completed the agreed work as per the signed document with your client. “I knew about the Stakeholder account, and when there was an issue in a project we were involved with, we agreed with the main contractor a final balance, and this sum was deposited by the main contractor with SPATA. We agreed the work that we were willing to undertake to resolve the issues. The signed agreement was then used as the basis for the work to be completed and the money to be paid to us via SPATA.” Andy Phillips, Cheshire Wellness
Hearing talks from guest speakers and meeting members to share experiences are just two of the reasons that members choose to attend the Annual General Conferences, or the Regional Meetings / Seminars held during the year. “We are a long established SPATA (and BISHTA) member, and I am passionate about learning and sharing ideas amongst companies in the industry to benefit us all. Where possible, I look to attend the annual conference and have also hosted a number of Regional meetings at our offices in Exeter, as networking is vital to learn and improve what we offer our customers.” Brad Cannings, Cannings and H20

Being part of a trade association such as BISHTA and SPATA can help support members when they come up against difficult circumstances or incidents. Being able to pick up the phone and speak to someone who knows the industry and can offer knowledgeable advice and assistance is a lifeline, and it’s only when you come up against a difficult situation that you realise just how valuable this support can be. “My showroom was targeted by an organised gang of thieves which lead to the loss of over £50,000 worth of stock. The police were involved, and I also contacted BISHTA for support and advice. BISHTA’s fast actions helped generate local mass press and media coverage for the incident. ITV Meridian News visited me on site the next day to film a TV interview which aired on ITV Meridian News and online that very evening. Within days a vigilant member of the public helped assist the police and three out of the four stolen hot tubs were recovered by the police. Without hesitation, I would recommend BISHTA membership to anyone in the industry.” Mike Robinson, Euphoria Lifestyle
Having knowledgeable staff is a vital part of the work undertaken by employers, and the Trade Associations play their part by signposting members to training offers, such as water hygiene management, dangerous goods transportation and the electrical awareness workshops, at reduced rates. “Our company takes training very seriously, and that is why we have attended both the BISHTA Hot Tub Site Surveyor course and also the Electrical Awareness Workshop. Three staff have benefitted from learning in these courses and in terms of electrical awareness, following the course, we were able to identify an issue that had been caused by the customer’s qualified electrician that needed to be rectified!” Yan Koob, Aquafinesse and Castle Hot Tubs

Marketing And Affiliation
Hosting annual awards, as part of the Industry Gala Dinner at SPATEX, provides an excellent opportunity to recognise and reward the work of association members. “Becoming a BISHTA member enables access to a network of support from the BISHTA team as well as BISHTA members. I believe access to such support has been fundamental in the development of my business. BISHTA does not just represent hot tub and swim spa companies. It represents the individuals within these companies with industry specific knowledge in specialist fields. Through BISHTA I have gained invaluable advice from highly experienced and knowledgeable people regarding hot tub legislation, water treatment, logistics and marketing. I get the opportunity to meet these ‘gurus’ at events like the BISHTA Awards. Last year, North Spas picked up a Gold, Silver and a Bronze Award at the BISHTA Awards. The Awards offer the opportunity for your small, local business to gain national recognition with the possibility of international recognition too from the EUSA – The European Union of Swimming Pool & Spa Associations.” David Mason, North Spas
PIP works hard to provide marketing and promotional opportunities for the industry and with a dedicated Marketing & PR Manager in Sallie Golding, all members can benefit from a steady flow of press releases, factsheets and other information that can be shared with consumers and the media. The PIP committee make sure that there are opportunities available that all members can get involved with to help maximise publicity from their association. “There is no doubt that one of the best ways to win customer confidence in your pool contracting company is to have been Award Winners at the annual British Pool and Hot Tub Awards. Each year we have received Awards, Sallie, has worked tirelessly to get our pools featured in both local and national publications. In 2012 and 2016 when we won the Dick Millward Trophy for Pool Contractor Of The Year, we have enjoyed magnificent publicity which has generated the highest quality sales leads which have turned into even more prestigious contracts.” Tim Bareham, Cresta Leisure

Dispute Resolution
Staying Informed – British Standards Online (BSOL)
Members can find a range of opportunities to save money such as 20% off the full purchase price for (most) British Standards. Other providers such as Wright Hassell Solicitors will provide some initial free legal advice for members, and dedicated insurance is also available from Nsure. “Thanks to the long-standing relationship that Nsure has with the BSPF (including a 10% discount), Tanby Pools continues to use the Poolsure insurance package for its business. We also have PI insurance through Nsure. As a large contractor, my company needs to make sure that our insurance package is thorough and that no important items are missed, to give me peace of mind. And that is why I choose Nsure.” Martin Borley, Tanby Pools
Even the most dedicated businesses will, from time to time, have to deal with a dissatisfied customer. Usually, this is not an issue, and everything can be resolved amicably. However, having a Trade Association to assist you, can sometimes be very helpful in more challenging circumstances. “As BISHTA members, we are aware of our responsibilities not only to work to Industry standards but also to uphold the Code of Ethics, which we pride ourselves on achieving. When a recent dispute arose, with the client of one of our dealers, BISHTA was able to help us by acting as an intermediary between the customer, ourselves and the manufacturer. The situation was further complicated after our dealer decided to place his company into liquidation. BISHTA liaised with the relevant parties and this helped to reduce the likelihood of any further concerns being raised by anyone involved in the dispute. It was good to have BISHTA’s support to call upon in this instance and the customer now has their spa working again.” Kevin Rickards Sanger, Elite Spas
Both BISHTA and SPATA are fortunate to have access to some of the leading experts in their respective fields, and members can tap into this knowledge, often at no cost. “Once again, SPATA were able to use their industry contacts to help me overcome a problematic main contractor in regards to the wiring regulations for a swimming pool shell. Using their knowledge, a satisfactory result was achieved with all of the paperwork available to back up our points. Having the weight of my trade association behind me was a great comfort in the dispute. Without their help and assistance, I would have struggled to have got my point across to the relevant parties.” Richard Troman, Buckingham Pools
The Trade Associations are committed to providing regular updates to members on industry – relevant topics, including pages in SPN (and other wet leisure publications). There is also a weekly newsletter emailed to members that gives bite-sized chunks of information. “As part of our SPATA membership we now have instant access to 25 of the Industry’s most relevant British Standards through BSOL Standards Online. These are available anywhere via the internet and are always current and the savings in both cost and time to our company are proving invaluable. This is a real step forward for SPATA in their ongoing role in developing professional standards within our Industry. The cost of purchasing the British Standards can be significant with individual documents often costing more than £100 which is why we are delighted to have access to these standards through SPATA for less than the price of buying one standard!” Steve Hallam, David Hallam Ltd
With thanks to our BISHTA and SPATA members for their positive feedback in this article. Being a trade association member stands as a badge of endorsement that can help to bring many advantages, recognising businesses that uphold Industry standards and who are willing to abide by a Code of Ethics. Members are also able to demonstrate their willingness to contribute financially to these industry bodies to enable the wet leisure voice to be heard by government and other key decision makers at home and abroad.

WHAT DOES PIP WANT TO ACHIEVE? That every relevant household has an awareness of the benefits of wet leisure products. Everyone likely to choose to buy a pool, hot tub, etc is aware of the benefits of working with BISHTA and SPATA members. There is a range of goals that PIP has set itself to achieve and they include: Deciding on the balance between traditional versus digital media 1a Working with members to build and develop media interest stories Gaining consumer press/media coverage through the British Pool & Hot Tub awards (and EUSA Awards) winners

and case studies as well as trade press coverage that can be used to build trade profiles and encourage new membership. These stories need to embrace messages that demonstrate the relevant purchasing decisions made by end users. Building specific consumer media relationships Building on our press/media contacts list and refining them with an aim to have more one-to-one press/media relationships, for those that influence end users. Achieving increased and wider digital media coverage Harnessing digital opportunities to widen our PR reach – Developing our press/media contacts and press/media communication. Online Presence Management = Growing our online profiles Raising the profiles of BISHTA and SPATA online through continued development of our websites, SEO, digital and social marketing with end users. Amplifying our Trade profile through national and local events Creating our ‘own’ activity to promote the trade profiles on a national level with a resource for members to run local level activity. the PR and Marketing function above can help to promote the features and benefits of membership and maximising trade publicity, wherever possible.
PIP’S STRATEGY The committee typically meet on a quarterly basis, as well as holding a focused strategy meeting in November each year to discuss plans for the year ahead. Meeting formats are initiated by quarterly reports compiled by Sallie Golding, who has the responsibility to see the committee’s actions through to fruition. Sallie commented: “The PIP committee provide a valuable resource to help me in my task to meet the strategy set out above. The committee offers a wealth of experience, making the perfect sounding board to check the legitimacy of my ideas and plans. However, there are also times throughout the year that I turn to the wider membership of BISHTA and SPATA to tap into the ground level knowledge and expertise of our members. We have a great group of people out there who are as passionate as I am about promoting our industry and it makes me very proud to be part of it!” As a committee, PIP works to give the industry greater visibility. If you would like to share your feedback, suggestions, and ideas to help PIP achieve its strategic goals, or if you would like to know how you can put actions into place to support the goals of PIP and drive consumer awareness, please email sallie@bspf.org.uk or call her on 01264 356210/1.

STA POOL PLANT – SWIM SCHOOL POOLS
Having Your Own Swim School Pool With the reduced availability of pool facilities proving to be a challenge for a number of swim schools across the UK, Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Expert offers his advice to owners and organisations who are looking at the option of having their own swimming pool built
O
ver the last 10 years, there has been a significant change in the delivery of learn to swim programmes. With the demise of Local Authority provision, we’ve seen a boom in the private swim school market; however with a decreasing stock of swimming pool facilities, water space is at a premium for this growing market and so it follows that more and more swim school owners, who are reliant on hiring pools, are attracted to building or owning their own swimming pool. Here at the STA we’ve seen this firsthand, with many of our private swim school customers seeking advice on how they can build their own pools – we predict it will also be a hot topic for conversation at this year’s SPATEX too.
SO WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER WHEN BUILDING YOUR OWN POOL? First and foremost, swim schools have to make sure the pools are fit-for-purpose and safe for their learners. When we hire, generally the pool owner has the responsibility for ensuring safe hygienic conditions and all the services. With your own pool, you have sole responsibility for all aspects of management and expenditure. This immediately questions the hiring of domestic pools and the inherent risks in terms of pool safe conditions, contracts, legal etc. Therefore, you have to weigh up the

advantages and disadvantages of this responsibility and financial commitment. Many swim schools, as per the case study example in this feature from The Little Swimming Company, cite that the advantages are: • Guaranteed safe hygienic water – when hiring facilities, we hear so many cases of swim schools turning up at a pool and not knowing if the caretaker has properly tested / treated the water, and there is nobody on site to ask. Having your own pool gives you the control to make sure its safe for your own protection and business reputation. • Warm water and atmosphere – many public pools find it difficult to alter the temperature for different swimming activities, as they have to cater for so many different age groups who require different water temperatures. Therefore, by having your own pool (and by having the right training) you can regulate the temperature of the water based on your own cliental and optimising energy consumption. • Guaranteed lessons without cancellations – this is a big issue for swim schools; they have no control over forced pool closures or hirers cancellation, which affects income and reputation. Having your own pool means you are not beholden to the problems of other facilities. • Quality building and plant – the control and quality of existing facilities can vary vastly, especially with ageing pool stock. By designing your own brand new facility, you can specify the build in line with the latest standards. • Opportunities to sell water space – as previously mentioned water space is at a premium and there is high demand. Having your own pool to hire creates new income opportunities. • It also allows a prime secondary spend outlet. However, for any swim school embarking on this journey, it is critical they set out a realistic business and financial plan.
WHAT ARE THE KEY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS? • Size of pool and building • Provision of a safe environment
• Types of customers – age ranges and abilities – this will impact on the pool size / depth / design • Facilities required i.e. plant room, changing rooms, viewing area, café, vending, gym, etc. • Size of pool(s) will define size of services to building – gas, electric, water, sewage, including discharge consent, wood burning, solar, heat pumps • Costs – design, building, materials, architect, professional trades, services, maintenance, rates, rent, insurance all need to be factored into the budget.
WHAT TYPE OF BUILDING? • New build - with a new build you can design a facility to your own specification and budget. However, consider services to site as this could increase the budget considerably. • Existing building – we’ve seen pools built in the middle of business parks within factory units and in residential areas in old pubs / hotels / churches. With this route, the pool and ancillary spaces have to be fitted in. Assessing existing services is again critical. • Another possibility could be taking over a redundant pool facility. • All the existing buildings require serious structural survey for all aspects of the site, how energy efficient is it? • Modern buildings will have inherent energy efficient features such as insulation imposed on the build by local authorities. Planning permission and / or change of ‘business’ use will also need to be carefully researched.
LOCATION • Consider the catchment area and the demographics, where will your swimmers come from? • Ages – investigate your target age range because this will impact on pool size • Accessibility / Parking sufficient and convenient without charge if possible. Will business neighbours object? • Local geology – groundwater etc. especially

STA POOL PLANT – SWIM SCHOOL POOLS for new build. • Covenants for new build or existing (e.g. churches)
POOL BUILD COSTS – BASIC AND QUICK OVERVIEW The following is for example only, it emphasises the critical need for expert advice both locally and pool construction.
IN OR ABOVE-GROUND POOL? • Existing units with pre stressed concrete and other structural issues would generally lead to an above ground pool being specified, i.e. constructed on a suitable surface • Normal ground conditions for new build or existing would need to be in place for any in ground pool; if not then there can be significant costs
TILES OR LINED? • Nearly all tiled pools are in ground - costs high • Liner pools can be in or above ground - costs relatively low – they have a predicted life • Liner and flexible membrane – quality of lining is essential – temperature dictates the grade • Pre coated panels – popular and resilient • Fibre glass issues over recoating - new technology is good • Stainless steel high quality, potentially high cost
ENERGY CONSERVATION AND ENERGY SELECTION • • • • • •
Begins at design stage Pool covers Inverters Solar Ground source heat pumps Insulation - new units and buildings have to conform to specific insulation parameters
HEATING AND VENTILATION • Requires control of moist air conditions
• Remove moisture • Efficient control of relative water and air heating • Energy efficiency • Substantial plant • Effective service supply • Insulation
THE POOL AND ITS CIRCULATION • Provide clean warm hygienic and safe water • Disinfection system - automatic recommended • pH control • Effective pool water distribution • Effective surface water control • Effective hygienic filtration • Preferably medium rate sand at present
POOL PLANT 10 X 5 METRES (BASIC EXAMPLE) – GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS • Skimmer system or deck level surface water removal • Constant depth for above ground • Variable depth for in ground new build • Excellent hydraulics • Cope with constant periods of use with set numbers • Automatic chemical controls • Appropriate heating and ventilation • Pool covers • Acceptable sizing for pool surround and ancillary areas – plant, changes, access etc. • Consideration for possible expansion
SUMMARY – BUILD QUALITY AND CONTENT • Providing safe building and pool access for all able and non-able customers – internally and externally • Managing pool water treatment to PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) recommendations and other statutory regulations - disinfection, Ph control, UV light system
• Applying green energy techniques as pool buildings, even on small scale are big energy users • Designing adequate changing and showering areas - tiled and waterproof membrane. • Building a pool plant room to safe standards. • Ensuring all surfaces of wetted areas designed to prevent leakage • Having adequate services. • Adding facilities for secondary spend, i.e. café • Specifying fittings and fixtures to provide suitable lifespan
COMPARISON EXAMPLE COSTS FOR BUILD (FOR GUIDANCE ONLY): Costing example based on a mean of £800.00/m² • Existing unit – 462m² x £800 = £369,600 • New build* – 462m² x £2,000 = £924,600
*Service supply to site will vary according to geography, location etc. The information here is based on my personal experience as a pool consultant and former swim school owner, and is by no means definitive. In all respects, as each build will differ, it is essential you seek expert advice on all the matters covered, including legal, planning, accounting, building and pool construction – this will also involve employing the services of an architect, pool plant specialist and experienced tradespeople. STA will be exhibiting at SPATEX 2017 on Stand H9. For further information on any aspect of pool and spa plant management training please visit STA Website. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

In addition to the many exhibitors and products that will be on display, SPATEX will again be playing host to two seminar arenas, with free to attend workshops taking place in each throughout the three day event. All workshops hosted by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) are completely new and attendees to them will be awarded with a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point on a Certificate of Attendance – a valuable record of the courses that have been attended.

HAVEN SAUNAS SHOWCASE E-SERIES ELECTRIC SAUNA Haven Saunas will be showcasing their ultra durable E-Series electric sauna heaters at SPATEX. The E-Series heaters represent a significant advancement in sauna heater technology. The heaters boast a unique patented tray system which acts as a barrier between the electrical elements and water. This function provides the bather the freedom to pour liberal amounts of water onto the rocks without fear of damage to the heater. Even the smallest Haven Saunas electric heater can evaporate up to 5 litres of water in 15 seconds. The patented tray is also designed to enable ease of cleaning and maintenance and can be removed and reattached. Energy efficiency and faster heating capabilities were key considerations in the design of the E-Series. The tray vent system allows hot air to heat the rocks quickly while the heater’s unique convection chambers maximises air intake and accelerates hot air production. Available in 9, 12 and 15 kW, the E-Series are suitable for cabin sizes 7m2 up to 30m2. In addition to the E-Series electric sauna heaters, the Haven Saunas team will also be presenting their range of high quality sauna accessories. See them on stand H7

SPA CREST EUROPE RETURN TO SPATEX WITH NEW MODELS FOR 2017 Spa Crest Europe will be returning to SPATEX and with new models being introduced in 2017, including six-seater Queen S100 and the Tuff Spas TT350 model – the world’s first and only round spa with a hard top cover – there will be plenty to discuss on the stand. As well as boasting an impressive specification, the Queen S100 is priced to target the important sub £6,000 sector
of the market, yet still returns attractive dealer margins, especially important to those retailers who sell a lot of their product on finance packages. With the addition of the new TT350, dealers will be able to add a unique product to their line that no other company can offer. The TT350 was a popular seller in its previous guise without the hard cover, so with the addition of the ‘Tuff Top’, expectations are that it will be a very big seller over the coming months. To learn more about any of the new products from the Spa Crest Europe stable, and to talk about dealership opportunities available in selected areas of the UK, visit the Spa Crest Europe stand. SUNTRAP AIM TO RAISE THE BAR AT SPATEX THANKS TO NEW MODELS Suntrap Systems return to SPATEX having recently added two new models to their current range of pool lifts and hoists – the Spa Ultra and the Spa Elite. Both fully automatic lifts, they are intended for use with a hot tub or spa pool and can raise over a wall up to 172 cm high. These lifts complement the models of pool hoists that Suntrap Systems offer in championing access for all. Suntrap Systems are proud to be displaying the Spa Ultra as well as their Power EZ and Portable Pro lifts on their stand. The Power EZ lift is a popular, budget priced manual lift which is battery assisted for user comfort. Supplied with all fittings, this lift will always require a helper to operate it but is simple to use and easy to maintain. Ideal for multiple locations as it is easy to carry by one person. The Portable Pro pool lift is exceptional as it requires no poolside installation and yet has a lifting capacity of 28.5 stones (181 kg). This lift is wheeled to where required and because it is fully automatic, a user can retain their independence and operate it themselves.

2017 Hot Tubs – The New Season
The new look Utopia Series from Caldera, with its super hightech cabinet and unique elegant shell design, sets itself apart from many other hot tubs
Over recent years, hot tubs have been a real success story in the UK and for many manufacturers and retailers, 2016 was another great year. But with a number of potential pressures facing the market, staying one step ahead of the competition in 2017 will be the key to ensuring continued success. ith uncertainty surrounding BREXIT resulting in currency falls combined with expectations that the general public would cut back on spending, just a few months a go, the hot tub sector was one of a number of industries that was fearing the worst from a projected belt tightening by UK consumers. However, as with many recent predictions, things have panned out as expected and despite less than favourable circumstances, it seems there is no stopping a market that has continued to go from strength-to-strength over recent years. Of course, we are only weeks into a new year so 2017 may indeed prove to be challenging but with confident consumers still spending in the sector, combined with new models and innovations for the season ahead, the signs are looking good already and it looks possible that the hot tub market could be chalking up another successful year. With a number of brands enhancing existing models as well as adding new ranges to their offering, competition between companies could be tougher than ever this

PROJECT SHOWCASE
Award Winning ‘Forest Pool’ Brecon National Park, Wales
T
his stunning, secluded natural pool, located in the heart of a forest in the Brecon National Park in Wales, has scooped a major International Award for its designers, Poolscape Ltd. The ‘Forest Pool’ has won a BIOTOP International Natural Pool Award for the best Natural Pool design, beating off entries from around Europe. The pool was designed and built by Herefordshire based Poolscape Ltd and was created for two artists, who have a home in Brecon National Park. The client’s brief was to create a magical natural pool within an old disused quarry, in the middle of the forest. The clients, who wish to remain anonymous to ensure their privacy, wanted a natural spring water swimming pool that blended seamlessly with the surrounding Welsh Countryside. The pool’s remote location five miles into the forest, meant the

construction was extremely challenging for Poolscape’s team, who had to transport all materials on dumper trucks, via a muddy, single-width forest track, which was unsuitable for lorries. The Natural Pool is 144 m² in size and divided into a 40 m² regeneration zone and a 104 m² swimming area and it is 2.4 metres deep at its deepest point. The pool is chemical free, and is naturally cleansed using plants and BIOTOP’s patented filtration system. The pool was constructed using as many sustainable materials as possible, including BIOTOP’s recycled corner units, which avoid the need for large volumes of concrete. The Stone used was collected from the old quarry and the Larch for the timber deck was sourced locally. Once complete, the Forest Pool was filled using natural Spring water from the many local streams on the private estate. A team of international architects and landscape designers were

on the judging panel for the International Pool Awards, including UK Landscape Designer Hannah Genders. The international jury agreed that the project showed “high quality in the implementation” and possessed “excellent quality of craftsmanship”. Commenting on the project, Poolscape’s Managing Director, Peter Miles said: “This was an unusual project due to its remote location and its limited access, plus the famous Welsh ‘weather’ didn’t help us at all during the build! But all the hard work has really paid off. We have exceeded our client’s expectations and created a magical place where by night they can swim under the stars, or by day they can relax and soak up the incredible views. The most important thing is that our clients are delighted, but for us to also receive this Natural Pool Award, is a great honour and a real bonus for all our team.” Poolscape Ltd 07974 390452 www.poolscape.co.uk

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS
Bacteria Barriers: Sanitation For Today’s Pools And Spas Whether in a domestic or commercial setting, providing a clean and safe experience is a must for any pool or spa owner. When it comes to water treatment, there’s no denying that traditional methods are still popular, effective and proven, but with an ever-increasing range of alternative products and systems on offer, is there such a thing as the best solution? This issue we examine what’s available By Karen Witney

hat to use? That is the question. Should your customers opt for the tried and tested traditional methods of water sanitisation or discover the benefits of some of the more recent incomers that are now proving their worth. Destroying waterborne germs that cause illness in bathers is the reason for swimming pool sanitation. This can be achieved by adding chemicals or by an increasing number of other methods. Common sanitising chemicals include the traditional chlorinebased treatments, chlorine which is generated from salt in saltwater pools, bromine-based sanitisers, copper and silver ions, ozone gas systems and more. Sometimes it’s the water at the point of supply that is the issue but each time a bather steps into the pool or hot tub they are introducing a myriad of nasties that need to be swiftly dealt with. Even showering before bathing does not totally eliminate contaminates and effective sanitisation is the only way to be sure the water is safe and pleasant for swimmers. With a lot of options on offer, we look at what’s available for the coming season.
LO-CHLOR STARVER® X – A SOLUTION TO PHOSPHATES Launched in 2016 Lo-Chlor Starver® X has become ‘the’ phosphate remover of choice across Europe. The product efficiently reduces high levels of phosphates before switching back to using the original Lo-Chlor Starver® as the ongoing preventative maintenance treatment. This highly concentrated formulation is uniquely formulated and removes higher levels of phosphate than that of any other product. Starver® X’s features and benefits include: • Removes up to 6ppm of phosphates • Natural composition of unique polymers and rare earth compounds • Enhances water clarity within 24 hours • Increases the efficiency of all sanitisers
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 67-70_SPN_Feb_17_Water_Treatment.indd 67
• No need to vacuum (does not settle in the pool) • Compatible with all pool treatments and equipment. Starver® X was originally formulated for use in the domestic pool market. Its unique properties are now proven in removing phosphate in natural swimming pools, aquaria, ponds, fountains and the commercial pool market. By reducing phosphates and eliminating algae this reduces the demand for chlorine as a sanitiser, therefore pools can operate over a season with much lower levels of chlorine consumption. Manufactured in the UK by Total Water Products, Lo-Chlor Chemicals are the global Get the X-factor of efficient phosphate removal with Lo-Chlor StarverX from Total Water Products
leaders in phosphate removal and control. Starver® products are sold in over 50 countries worldwide. Total Water Products can also eliminate and prevent unwanted calcium scale with their Lo-Chlor No More Scale product which is a phosphate free formulation designed to reduce and soften scale formation on both pool interiors and salt chlorinator cells. With over 60% of the UK having hard water, many pools suffer from unwanted scale deposits on both pool surfaces and equipment. Over time this will have a detrimental effect on the pool fabric and the efficiency of salt chlorinators, heaters and filters and with the product being phosphate free, No More Scale isn’t adding unwanted phosphate to the water.
O-CARE WEEKLY SPA CARE… MORE THAN JUST A PRODUCT IN A BOX O-Care is a great water maintenance product which has taken the UK by storm since its launch at the Hot Tub Living Expo in 2015. O-Care is a water conditioner which makes water maintenance safe, soft and simple. “Once a week the product is added to the water and although we advise customers to check the pH and chlorine or bromine levels we know from experience that some never do and still have great water quality,” commented Roel Fassbender, the company’s CEO. O-Care puts focus on adding value for both

the retailer and end-user. The O-Care water maintenance app and the O-Care Retailer Sales Concept are great examples of this focus. The app (O-Care Aqua Tool) helps users to self diagnose and fix their issue with a step by step format. The app is free and available from the AppStore and Google Play for Android devices. Roel continued: “We help our retailers where needed and because I’ve been a hot tub retailer for 11 years, I know exactly which challenges are faced on a daily basis. With this experience we created a concept that has proved itself with retailers in 11 countries.” The O-Care Retailer Sales Concept secures regular repeat business especially when the retailer sets up the auto-dispatch program. O-Care is active on social media sharing many facts to followers. Besides sharing information and knowledge O-Care also helps with the worldwide water crisis. Two dollars of every box of O-Care that is sold goes to Water.org which is an organisation co-founded by the actor Matt Damon. Water. org aspires to get clean water and sanitation to over two billion people worldwide who are currently without. “I know we can only make a small contribution, but I believe that we need to help where we can,” said Roel.
A SOUND INVESTMENT – TRIOGEN OZONE SYSTEMS FROM GOLDEN COAST When operating a pool, water hygiene isn’t just desirable: it’s incredibly important. While traditional chlorination is effective, pool users are sensitive to its smell and taste, as well as its irritating effect on eyes and skin. For those looking for an alternative, think ozone. Technological advances in recent years mean that this

type of treatment does more than simply reduce chlorination or improve water quality: it's hundreds of times more effective than traditional chemical treatments. Golden Coast, the UK’s largest independent supplier of wet leisure products, stocks an exclusive range of Triogen ozone water treatment products: all designed to ensure pool users enjoy the best experience possible. Systems are supplied with degassers and all components needed for installation. No extra consumables are required as ozone gas is generated on site. Systems operate under a vacuum to avoid the risk of any leakage. The Triogen TOGB2 compact ozone generator is a perfect example of the quality of the Triogen range. Designed to deliver long-life efficiency, it’s built to last for 10 to 15 years – without needing any replacement of parts. It features a ceramic Corona discharge unit that reduces build-up of nitric acid.
ABSOLUTE STERILISATION FROM ELECRO Elecro Engineering have launched an innovative device for sanitising pool water using UV activated Nano Crystals. The photocatalytic reaction taking place is the most powerful steriliser available, while the unit also splits water molecules creating highly mobile hydroxyl radicals. The photocatalytic reaction and hydroxyl radicals eliminate harmful waterborne organisms, bacteria and pathogens, and is the only technology that is able to break down organic matter such as urea, biofilm and suntan oils. The ceramic crystal catalyst of the Quantum system is the same technology used globally by waste water authorities to convert sewage into potable water. Unlike UV treatment alone, which alters the DNA of pollutants to prevent reproduction, the Quantum actually kills bacteria, viruses and microorganisms. The process is likened to the catalytic converter fitted to the exhaust system of cars, whereby the heat of the engine activates a platinum catalyst and converts poisonous waste from combustion gases into water and carbon dioxide molecules. Both the Quantum and car exhaust catalytic reactors are extraordinarily powerful and fast acting. The TOGB2 compact ozone generator is a perfect example of the quality of the Triogen range that Golden Coast supply
Innovation in water treatment – Elecro’s Quantum and Nano Crystals
The advantage of the reaction being contained within Quantum’s ceramic catalyst chamber is that no by-products are released into the pool. This is important for the safety of swimmers against alternative treatments such as ozone – which lingers on the water surface and is essentially a gas that has been linked to severe respiratory conditions. Case studies on the Quantum have highlighted an average 74% saving in chemical consumption. Balanced with the Quantum costing no more to run than a light bulb, and the only consumable parts to consider are UV lamps, this proves to be a wise investment. The ceramic catalyst is several times harder than glass and will never be consumed by the reaction, expected to long outlive the three year manufacturer’s warranty. Recent consumer testimonials have all reported a visible improvement in water clarity when using the Quantum, often described as ‘sparkling water’.
SALT WATER CHLORINATION WITH HYDROCHLOR FROM WATERCO Designed and manufactured in Australia Hydrochlor will automatically maintain the chlorine level of the pool and eliminate problems associated with periods of very high or low chlorine levels. Fewer fluctuations in chlorine levels mean fewer fluctuations in pH levels adding up to more stable, balanced water. Consistently maintained sanitiser levels in the pool water will prevent the growth of all common algae. A salt-water chlorinated pool requires much less attention than a chlorine pool and also provides a more comfortable swimming environment. Salt water feels better on the skin and is less irritating than standard chlorinated water. Through the process of electrolysis, a

saline solution passes over an electrolytic cell. The saline solution is then separated into two components: chlorine and sodium. The chlorine is instantaneously transformed into Hypochlorous acid; this is the chlorine form that kills algae and other harmful organisms in the water. The chlorine and sodium then re-bond and become natural salt again, the process continues as long as the electrolytic cell is functioning correctly. A chlorine generator’s main function is to produce chlorine for the pool. This keeps a residual of chlorine in the pool that prevents algae from growing Waterco have been manufacturing salt chlorinators for 25 years and as a result of this vast experience the Hydrochlor comes

ADVANCED OXIDATION WITH DA-GEN – THE DRYDEN AQUA GENERATOR Good pool water quality depends on four key factors – circulation, filtration with a continuous flocculation, disinfection and pH control and finally dilution with fresh water. Circulation is the key to guarantee optimal water flow throughout the entire pool by
ensuring appropriate circulation and turnover. Best filtration results are achieved with DAISY (Dryden Aqua Integrated System). With optimal filtration and flocculation using AFM® and APF, eliminates the food source for bacteria and reduces the surface area on which they can grow. The result – DAISY requires a minimal amount of oxidants to disinfect the small quantity of pathogens remaining. The most effective oxidising agents are so-called ‘free radicals’. These highly reactive oxygen radicals (OH- and O-) oxidise organic substances and don’t form any harmful disinfection by-products (DBP’s). The disinfection with OH radicals is called advanced oxidation. Free radicals are
HYPROLYSER® RESOLVE SCHOOL’S POOL PROBLEMS In February 2016, Upper Wharfedale School in North Yorkshire was having significant problems with their swimming pool. The plant equipment was failing on a regular basis resulting in the pool being frequently closed. They were on the verge of losing regular lettings clients and struggling to deliver the full PE curriculum to students in the area. The school budget could not accommodate the purchase of new plant equipment, so difficult decisions had to be made about the pool’s future. Pool Tech Services of Bolton were recommended to them by an existing customer and Managing Director Danny Grant was on site hours after a phone call asking for help. He immediately identified the problems and recommended a solution. Within a month, all the plant and dosing equipment had been changed to modern, safe systems on an affordable lease contract.
The changes included replacing hazardous chemicals with a Hyprolyser® Compact electrochlorination system and CO2 gas for pH correction. Manufactured by Gaffey, the Hyprolyser system was chosen due to its safety advantages and simplicity of operation, generating a non-hazardous hypochlorite solution, on site, using salt, water and electrical energy. Lucy Wade, the Business Manager at Upper Wharfedale School said: “Since the installation of the new equipment the swimming pool has never been closed for maintenance. The equipment is reliable and efficient giving the benefit of fixed running costs,” and added: “Danny and the team at Pool Tech Services are always on hand to help with any issues and we are extremely grateful for their help, because without them, the swimming pool might have closed.” Gaffey Technical Services 01254 350180 www.gaffey.co.uk Pool Tech Services 01204 410903 www.pooltechservices.co.uk

Therefore a residual oxidant is needed to guarantee disinfection in the pool. The most suitable oxidant for this task is a small amount of chlorine. The DA-GEN produces both free radicals and chlorine. With a properly sized DAISY it is possible to maintain a domestic pool with free chlorine residuals as low as 0.1 mg / l of free chlorine to ensure effective disinfection. The process of salt electrolysis splits sodium chloride (salt) molecules converting them into sodium hypochlorite (chlorine). It is known that high levels of chloride in the water can cause corrosion even to 316L grade stainless steel. Most salt electrolysis systems available require high salt levels to operate that will ultimately lead to corrosion. The DA-GEN uses very low levels of magnesium chloride as opposed to sodium chloride (salt). It also works on a process of splitting a higher proportion of water molecules than magnesium chloride molecules and releasing the free radicals (OH- and O-). The DA-GEN used in-conjunction with DAISY is known as the DAISY+ and offers pool owners one of the most advanced pool water treatment systems available plus very low running costs.
A PURE SAND FRIENDLY ADVANCE IN WATER TREATMENT The E-Clear system from Pure Friendly is an advanced oxygen and Mineral Fresh Water technology which provides pure and healthy water with high levels of oxygen for swimming pools, hydrotherapy

pools and more. The system is also EPA rated as 100% ecologically and environmentally friendly. Patented 100% chlorine free, salt free, toxic free, bacteria free water purification and sterilisation technology exceeds the effects of boiling water and results in the total elimination of all algae, bacteria and a host of viruses including cryptosporidium whilst still providing the required oxidation to qualify as a stand-alone 100% toxic-free fresh water sanitiser system. Pure Friendly technology is the only proven system which has been available for over ten years which does not require chlorine, bromine or salt and unlike chlorine and salt chlorination does not produce carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) or trihalomethanes such as chloroform or bromoform. Since the mid 1970s when DBPs were first discovered in chlorinated tap water, the EPA has stepped in to restrict levels of these chemicals, some of which, like trihalomethanes, have been linked to cancer, miscarriages, reproductive problems, and other diseases. Chlorine reacts with organic matter – such as leaves and dirt, as well as sweat, oils, lotions, saliva and urine that people introduce to form dozens of so-called disinfection by-products, or DBPs, which can be toxic and can’t be biologically degraded in the water. With Pure Friendly the pool water is soft and non-corrosive extending the life on the pool lining, pool surround, pipes, filters and pump bringing huge savings in life cycle expenses.
With Pure Friendly oxygenation customers can rest assured that the swimming pool water is healthy, crystal clear, kind on the environment and fit to drink. Homeowners can also reduce their water bill by backwashing precious water directly to the garden lawn and plant life. SPN

UV SYSTEMS
UV – A Shining Light In Water Treatment When it comes to the effective treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, UV Systems are now an established choice, particularly in commercial settings. Their success is no real surprise when you consider UV’s many benefits, but their big selling point is a large reduction in the use of chlorine as a sanitiser. As more pools make the switch to UV, more products have come to market and this issue, we take a look at the current ultra violet options By Jon Wadeson
T
he benefits of using UV for water treatment have been known for a long time, however its mainstream use has really only happened over the last couple of decades. Now accepted as one of the most effective choices for water treatment, UV systems have come along way over recent years but manufacturers are far from finished when it comes to product developments and are still improving the systems that are on offer. UV systems work by utilising radiation from UV lamps to inactivate the cells of undesirable organisms contained within pool or spa water by altering the DNA of these harmful bacteria, micro organisms and pathogens. The result – cleaner and safer sanitised pool and spa water and a reduced need for chemical treatment. With a number of products available to the UK market, this issue we focus on just some of the leading lights within the UV sector.

LESS IS MORE – THE WORLD’S MOST COMPACT UV SYSTEM With lower running costs, an ultra slim installation foot print and reduced operating power, atg UV Technology’s next generation UV System, nicknamed The Wafer, has proved that less is considerably more. With over 200 aquatic facilities choosing to install a Wafer (WF) system since its launch, the range has taken the market by storm. It is ‘The UV equivalent of the smart phone’ said Simon Whittingham, Managing Director at FT Leisure.
For design consultants, the WF design offers an ultra-compact, lightweight solution that can be installed both horizontally and vertically. At around 30% smaller than systems currently on the market, together with single sided access and significantly reduced maintenance space, the WF series easily fits into even the tightest of swimming pool plant rooms. As an inline system, the WF range installs directly into the pipe, reducing the need for additional pipework and support structures. With an ultra slim design, comes a significant reduction in weight without compromising on design features. Features include TwistlokTM ‘plug and play’ lamps and quick release quartz, making the WF range one of the easiest UV systems on the market to install. With its hydraulically optimised design for increased performance at lower operating powers, standardised spares and automatic variable power matching UV performance to pool opening times and water quality data, the WF range is one of the most economic and cost efficient systems on the market, providing increased performance at a reduced cost. UV is proven to protect against chlorine resistant bacteria, such as Cryptosporidium, and break down problem chloramines which are the cause of itchy skin, red burning eyes and often overpowering chemical smell. With a correctly sized WF system, the result is bright sparkling water, fresh clean air and a safe bathing environment. Due to its success, the WF (Wafer) range has now been extended with a further five models, treating flows from 1m3/hr to 700 m3/hr.

goals, Golden Coast stocks an expansive range of advanced Triogen water treatment products. Triogen’s UV range, exclusive to Golden Coast, works in tandem with traditional sanitising treatments to: reduce the amount of chemicals needed, combat waterborne bacteria and viruses, and lower chlorine levels. Reducing chlorine consumption does more than make sound commercial sense: it reduces the risk of eye and skin irritation for swimmers, along with the unpleasant chlorine odour associated with swimming pools. Triogen’s popular UV systems have been built to last and benefit from specially-tuned broad-spectrum mercury lamps. The user-friendly and low maintenance UVARAY 45-1000 UV system, for example, is particularly effective at killing Cryptosporidium Parvum and Giardua Lamblia: the highly infectious microorganisms which are virtually chlorine resistant. Domestic pool owners and small hotels can benefit from the energy-efficient TR2 low-power UV system. As well as boasting an impressive 12,000-hour lamp life, it has a robust UV-inhibited, corrosion-proof polymeric reactor body for longevity.
THE NEW VGE PRO UV-C RANGE FROM CERTIKIN New for 2017, Certikin are offering the VGE Pro range of light commercial UV systems to provide healthy, clear and safe water. choosing one of the VGE Pro units, you are choosing guaranteed quality for a fair price. Each unit is equipped with: • a 316L Stainless Steel reactor • a UV-C timer • transparent parts to monitor UV-C light. The VGE Pro UV-C Purifiers are also fitted with unique Smart Pin Technology (SPT). This innovative system is a reliable way to integrate the UV-C lamp(s) to the reactor in a safe, efficient and smart way. The SPT makes it possible to replace the lamp safely whilst the system remains filled with water. If the lamp is mistakenly left on during the replacement, it will switch off automatically as soon as it’s removed from the socket. Due to the seal between the lamp socket and lamp, the system can be used in situations where IPx4 is required. The high quality ceramic is an excellent electrical insulator and is resistant to corrosion. A visual observation of the operation of the lamp is no problem through various transparent parts.
SWIMLINE UVEO TREATS POOL WATER WITH UP TO 60% LESS POWER CONSUMPTION Hanovia’s SwimLine Ultraviolet Energy Optimised (UVEO) system delivers a guaranteed, consistent UV dose with maximum efficiency for swimming pool operators. running costs for 24/7 applications such as swimming pools without compromising on biosecurity or chloramine control. A prime benefit is that treatment is performed with just a single UV lamp, eliminating the need to install a bigger system with multiple lamps. This saves on upfront capital costs and lifetime spares costs. The system also utilises an electronic ballast with ‘stepless’ power control, automatically adjusting power continuously to match pool operating conditions. The SwimLine UVEO is optimised specifically for pool bio-safety and ensures chlorine-resistant organisms, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, are controlled with the optimum UV dose and the product is compliant with both local country standards and the emerging US Model Aquatic Health Code requirements. The optimised medium pressure UV lamp continues to provide the excellent chloramine reduction for which Hanovia’s traditional pool products are renowned. This ensures effective control of these unpleasant by-products of chlorine dosing which are responsible for the typical ‘chlorine smell’, red, stinging eyes and skin irritations. Controlling chloramines also delivers high quality pool water, reduced corrosion of metal structures and a healthier environment for bathers. The system comes with Hanovia’s patented ‘UVGuard’, which allows safe checking of the UV sensor (performance monitoring instrument) using a unique ‘eyelid shutter’ design, which protects the operator from exposure to UV light. The SwimLine UVEO comes in a range of sizes and treatment capacities to meet typical pool sizes.
TOPLINE’S LOW PRESSURE SOLUTIONS FOR TODAY’S UV GENERATION When discussing water treatment options and alternatives to more traditional solutions, UV is often suggested. However, it’s important

UV SYSTEMS
As water features, wave machines, flumes and splash pads raise the fun factor in swimming pools, traditional methods of disinfecting water with chlorine, cause problems for operators and customers alike. Higher water temperatures and increased turbulence in leisure pools require increased dosages of chlorine, leading to pool users complaining of burning eyes, red or itchy skin and an overpowering chlorine smell throughout the facility. In some extreme cases the fabric of the building has been attacked through corrosive condensation. Centre Parcs demand the very best in water quality for their aquatic facilities and have utilised atg UV Technology for many years. Working with Neuman Aqua, a leading designer and builder to the aquatics industry, atg UV were selected to provide 14 x Wafer (WF) UV systems to the £11m Subtropical Swimming Paradise project at Longleat forest in Wiltshire, which is due for completion mid-2017. At around a third of the size of comparative UV systems, and with significantly reduced maintenance space, the WF series is easy to install or retrofit into the tightest of plant rooms without compromising on performance. Currently being installed into 14 areas of the new development, these state-of-the-art UV systems are
to be clear that UV generation is not an alternative to chlorine. With 5 years of experience in the manufacturing of low pressure UV, Topline Electronics, of Hailsham in the UK, are very well placed to explain the overall benefits of UV, but are quick to point out that UV is not a replacement for chlorine. In terms of minimising chlorine use UV can reduce the amount of free chlorine that is measured in a pool by up to 50%, but since UV has no residual effect outside the UV chamber the pool requires an additional residual disinfectant to minimise cross infection between bathers. Photo-oxidisation through UV generation reduces the amount of dilution required to remove unwanted combined chlorine compounds from the pool and will also inactivate the micro-organisms that chlorine cannot easily remove, such as Cryptosporidium. A typical pool can reduce the free chlorine residual from 1.5 ppm to

around 0.8 ppm, resulting in an increased user experience, both in the pool and the pool surround atmosphere. The benefits of the Topline Low Pressure UV, when compared to a medium pressure UV system, are much lower energy consumption and reduced spares requirements. A 7 kW medium pressure system will typically use around £6,000 of electricity per year. A Topline low pressure unit will use only £500 of electricity in a year, and requires only a lamp and quartz sleeve change each year, minimising the spares requirements many UV units require. The Topline ultra violet treatment system offers a unique full flow design to eliminate dead spots and areas of poor flow within the chamber, and can be configured to treat any size of system and is used widely for all types of swimming pools, spas, hydrotherapy pools, interactive play Topline Electronic’s low pressure UV systems have reduced energy consumption and are suitable for all types of pools

In April 2016, the two organisations began unification negotiations with the goal of creating a unified entity to work as one for the industry. The APSP and NSPF Boards met in person several times throughout 2016 and hired a professional services firm to perform due diligence analysis, facilitate strategic discussions with both boards, and conduct qualitative research with Board members and key volunteer leaders. APSP Board Chairman Jack Manilla and NSPF Board President G. Bruce Dunn stated: “Both
Boards have been diligent, transparent, and tireless in their respective efforts to create a path forward. From the beginning of this process, the goal was to create more swimmers, more swimming pools and more hot tubs that will allow users to gain from the health benefits of swimming activity, aquatic immersion, and hydrotherapy. Although the outcome is not of one unified organisation, both APSP and NSPF recognise and embrace that this is the time to create accelerated change through enhanced collaborative efforts.” NSPF will continue to focus on encouraging healthy living through education and research while APSP’s focus will remain on protecting the industry through government relations and standards. Both organisations will continue to offer high quality aquatic education central to the success of the industry.

OPINION
It Says ‘Free Delivery’ – I Wonder Who Pays For That? “Free delivery and free returns allow people to shop now, and decide later that they really don’t like any of the 6 pairs of shoes, 3 jumpers, a toaster and a Peppa Pig Party Time Race Game that they bought at their leisure and now plan to return at the expense of the retailer. What is that going to cost us?” asks Jamie Adams, Golden Coast’s Managing Director
T
he first secure retail transaction over the internet took place in 1994 and by the following year Amazon.com and eBay were there to take your money; if you had enough patience to cope with your 56k, dialup connection. That first online purchase is believed to be ‘Ten Summoner’s Tales’ by Sting and it went for $12.48 plus shipping. Of course, that was over 20 years ago and it makes sense that e-commerce, on-line retail, call it what you will, has changed enormously but were all of those changes well thought out decisions or have we just been following trends and jumping on bandwagons? There certainly appears to be enough incentive to get involved. In the late 90s the vast majority of people who ordered or shopped online were men in their early 30s who were interested in technology. You know, geeks. Now it is just about everybody. From your grandchildren to your grandparents, the entire country is clicking away and adding to their basket. In the UK, online sales are growing at about 15% year on year. In fact, online retail expenditure in the UK is forecast to reach £62.7bn in 2020. That’s an awful lot of money and businesses will try whatever they can to win a bigger slice of it. The best price. The best choice. The best website. Free delivery.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ‘PLUS SHIPPING’? There are some advantages to the idea of buying stuff online. From the customer’s point of view, they can order whenever they want; the shop is always open. They are possibly offered a bigger choice; the shop isn’t going to run out of shelfspace. They can compare any number of businesses selling the same product and they can get the ‘best price’. From the seller’s point of view, they can avoid the overheads of having ‘bricks and mortar’ shops and showrooms and so they can win business by offering a lower price
88 February 2017 SPN 42_SPN_Feb_17_Opinion.indd 88
and attracting customers from a wide area. Of course, the problem comes once the deal is done and the purchase made. The person who bought it is in Penge and the thing they just bought is in a warehouse in Macclesfield. ‘That’s fine’, says the seller. ‘We offer free delivery’. And their margin, which was slim in the first place, gets shaved a bit more. Offering free delivery was a good trick for the first few to do it. They stand out from the crowd and attract more customers and, after all, they are in a ‘high volume – low margin’ game. But what happens when everyone is doing it? It stops being an advantage and becomes a burden on the business. Because that delivery isn’t ‘free’. Somehow it’s got to get paid for.
‘JUST SLING IT ON THE VAN’ – OR NOT The first option is to make the cost of delivery as low as possible. Chuck it in a box and throw it in a courier’s van. The problem there is that the quality of the delivery is part of the quality of customer service that the company offers. The likes of Tesco and Argos are moving customers towards ‘click and collect’ – in fact Tesco has just announced cutting 1,000 jobs from it’s distribution centres – but that isn’t an option for everyone. Amazon seems to be planning on building a fleet of drones. At Golden Coast we are a bit more traditional and have our own fleet of delivery vehicles
and qualified drivers. Because yes, this affects my business. Whether an order is made by phone or fax or from our webshop, everything that we sell has to be delivered. The way we see it is that the quality of the delivery is a part of the service that we offer and we take pride in the fact that our drivers are often singled out for praise from our customers. Another option is to win back that delivery cost from somewhere else. Customer service is often the first area to get the chop. We’ve all dealt with e-commerce sites that offer no way to contact the business – either to complain or enquire – other than by email or labyrinthine automated phone systems that often leave you no option other than simply to hang up. There is money to be saved there.
SO WHAT WILL THE FUTURE DELIVER? Free delivery has turned out to be a poisoned chalice. Unsurprisingly, customers and consumers want it but the cost is crippling many businesses. Worse than that, it’s changing customer behaviour. People are ordering online on the off chance that they might want the product and then sending it straight back. Retailers faced a 40% surge in returns on Black Friday sale items and when it gets to gifts, it’s even worse. Over £250m worth of unwanted gifts will have been returned this Christmas. That’s an awful lot of packages travelling from one end of the country to the other for no real reason. That has a financial impact and an environmental one. It may well be true to say that the customer is king, but even kings have to realise that everything has a cost. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
