Also in this issue, we put the spotlight on a number of other key items for the new season. After recording another successful year, we take a closer look at a number of innovations and new models in the hot tub sector, plus we take a look at various options for water sanitisation using different technologies bar UV, as that has its own dedicated feature which covers some of the various systems that are available. Still in the plant room, we take a closer look at products that are keeping the water moving in pools and spas with our pumps feature and then showcase ten products that will take the effort out of cleaning in 2018. In Jamie Adams’ Opinion piece, he highlights why reflecting on the past helps to shape the future plus there’s information on testing for phosphates and sulphates – the lesser known paramaters – from the experts at Lovibond Tintometer. The STA’s Luke Griffiths also explores ways in which commercial pool operators can promoting safe, healthy and hygienic practices and if that wasn’t enough, there’s also useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA including a look at the many benefits membership offers to businesses plus a look at the work of PIP. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, people, product and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. NIVEKO Pool Completes Stunning Dorset Home This impressive residence in Dorset, built in a typical style for the county, is the home of the Turner family. With extensive grounds which are complemented by stunning and far-reaching views, the peace and quiet of the countryside surrounding the house is ideal for active relaxation. The young family had a number of ideas for how best to enjoy their leisure time but top of the list was a new swimming pool. Enter Wiltshire-based Rock Pools and Spas who were the team responsible for adding this striking one-piece swimming pool to the Turner’s garden. “We heard about NIVEKO pools from Martin Pelling from Rock Pools and Spas, which is a partner of Certikin International, the official supplier of NIVEKO pools in Great Britain. We had our own idea of the sort of pool we wanted to get. Swimming is an active way of relaxing for us and our children love splashing around in the water… so we opted for a NIVEKO Skimmer Top Level pool, which certainly lived up to our expectations. We

chose a grey colour, which looks very natural and gives the pool a modern look. Martin was amazing, all the time from our initial talks until the pool was finally installed, explaining everything to us and immediately dealing with any problems that cropped up. We love our pool, it was a great investment.”

Ceramique Internationale Adds Finishing Touches to Prestigious Golf Resort’s Spa Tile specialist Ceramique Internationale has contributed to a new £2.4m refurbishment project, adding the finishing touches to Merseyside’s prestigious Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa. Set in almost 200 acres of parkland, the refurbishment programme at the golf resort and country club was completed in July, with improved golf facilities, a new look restaurant and bar, a renovationof the resort’s 62 bedrooms, and the creation of 14 extra luxury loft suites. The new renovation also incorporates the refurbishment of the spa, which includes three new treatment rooms, and an extension to the current health

facilities – with an expanded swimming pool area plus the introduction of a Himalayan salt sauna, laconium, steam room, ice fountain and thermal showers. Ceramique Internationale worked alongside CS Hotels, the owner’s management team, and with hotel and leisure interior design experts Curveline Design on the resort’s renovation, specifying tiles from two of Europe’s finest manufacturers – Italian company Casalgrande Padana and Spanish mosaic expert Vidrepur – to be used in the health club and the new loft suites. Casalgrande’s

Dragon Black tile was selected for the pool surround and on the floors of the wider spa area, with both spaces taking advantage of the tile’s grip finish, which provides anti-slip qualities. The Italian manufacturer’s large-format Loft Nero 600x600mm tile was also chosen for the bathroom floors of the resort’s new suites, accompanied by Vidrepur’s Aura Black tile, to create a feature

wall within the shower area. David Longbottom, Specification Sales Manager at Ceramique Internationale, said: “Our long-term working partnership with Curveline means we’ve had the opportunity to work on some of the countries finest resorts and hotels, and Formby Hall is the latest one. We recognised that a project of this stature required the highest quality tiles so we used our contacts at some of Europe’s finest manufacturers to source them, and the whole team is overjoyed with the finished look.” Ceramique Internationale Ltd 0113 231 0218 www.tilesandmosaics.co.uk

COTSWOLD POOL ADDS ACCESS EQUIPMENT People with disabilities in Cirencester now have better access to the swimming pool at Cotswold Leisure Centre thanks to the installation of new equipment. The equipment, worth £12,000, consists of a powered transfer hoist, an adjustable changing bed, a chair to transport swimmers to the poolside, and a pool hoist to lift users in and out of the water. Funding for the equipment was provided by a grant from Cirencester SCOPE (a small independent charity affiliated to the National SCOPE organisation), financial support from Cotswold District Council (CDC) and fund raising efforts from the local community. Cllr Stephen Hirst, cabinet member for Health and Leisure at CDC, attended a ceremony to celebrate the launch of the equipment and said: “This new equipment is a game changer, and I hope that this will encourage a big increase in take-up from those who previously felt excluded.”

London School Looks North For Pool Tiling Needs Cheshire-based Tiling & Pool Projects (UK) Ltd were working in the capital recently after being approached by the Facilities Manager at The Lady Eleanor Holles School, a prestigious private education establishment in Hampton, west London. The school needed a reliable company to tile its 25m swimming pool and pool surround floors. After meeting on site and discussing the available options, the company then provided references and tile samples so that the client could be sure they were dealing with a professional company. Soon after that the decision was made and a date set for the pool to be drained and work started. The firm from the northwest completed the works in the time scale allowed and upon completion the client was extremely pleased with the finished result. “We were confident when we chose Tiling & Pool Projects to carry out

the works due to the excellent references we had back from previous customers who had used them for similar projects. The team of men who carried out the works were fantastic from start to finish and any problems that did occur were dealt with and fixed quickly,” said Mr Lowe the Facilities Manager. Tony Crank, Managing Director of Tiling & Pool Projects said: “The contract had a few problems during the works, but this can be expected when dealing with swimming pool repairs/ refurbishments. The client and his staff were fantastic and

nothing was too much trouble during the contract with regard to quick decisions. “We work all over the UK and carry out projects that include full re-tiles, repairs, re-grouting to areas using cement based and epoxy materials, expansion joints and sika products. “We have carried out works for many local authorities, schools, hotels, health clubs and private clients.” Tiling & Pool Projects (UK) Ltd 0161 969 0660 www.tilingandpoolprojects.co.uk

A Monopool That’s Worth Czech-ing Out! This beautiful pool, installed by North London pool specialist, Unipools, showcases the beauty of NIVEKO products – Monopools made in the Czech Republic and supplied in the UK by Certikin International. Having installed the outdoor pool at this property in Hertfordshire some ten years ago, the owner of the property called in Unipools to install an indoor one. As a keen athlete who swims daily, the owner wanted a lap pool that he could use throughout the year. The stunning 2m by 19m level deck pool, called the ‘Overflow Multi’ is a customised pool with no limits in dimensions, it was the cornerstone of a new gym/pool complex which took just under a year to complete. The steel-blue Monopool was brought over to England in seven insulated pieces with all the inlet and outlet fittings. They were then welded together by the NIVEKO engineers, who also plumbed and fitted the in-roller motor cover shaft on site. It was supplied with an insulated

buffer tank and fully automatic technology modular unit for the NIVEKO filtration set. Managing Director of Unipools, Selwyn Mindel said: “This was a challenging project but I am very impressed with how easy the NIVEKO is to install and how well thought-out the design process is. The pools have a beautiful sleek design and the superior finish and quality is what sets it apart from other one-piece pools.” Controlling the temperature of the water and the pool hall is a Calorex Variheat fresh air unit. 43-YEAR-OLD LANCASHIRE POOL TO CLOSE A Lancashire pool that has been running for over 40 years will close despite a lastditch bid to save it. Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive board agreed to close the facility at Shadsworth Leisure Centre in Blackburn as it was costing more than £100,000 a year to operate. The pool which first opened in 1974, is the first pool to close in the borough for seven years. More than £25m has been invested by the council into Darwen Leisure Centre, which opened in 2010, and Blackburn College’s ‘more modern’ leisure facilities, which opened in March 2015. The borough is also home to Daisyfield Pools. The council said that it has over-budgeted in recent years, having a higher number of pools in the borough than both the national and north west average. A last minute proposal to save the facility was raised during the council’s executive board meeting, however it was rejected as it suggested diverting funds from the council’s transport funding.

HS Sports Launches Sister Brand APG Leisure HS Sports, a world leader in the supply of sports industry equipment, recently launched a subsidiary brand – APG Leisure – to focus solely on supplying commercial aquatic equipment. The new Cheshire based business was born as a direct result of industry demand and is already making an impact. The wealth of experience contained within HS Sports provides the springboard from which APG Leisure will make a splash in the aquatics industry. APG Leisure supplies commercial aquatic equipment such as starting blocks, lane ropes, lifeguard chairs and similar items, to leisure, sports and swimming clubs and organisations. A less extensive range of equipment was previously sold by HS Sports but as demand increased, the need for a dedicated team of experts became apparent and APG was launched. APG Leisure has made two senior appointments to help spearhead the company’s strategy for growth during 2018. Chris Austin has been appointed as Group Sales Manager and Scott Burge as

Sales Manager. Both bring with them a wealth of experience in the sports and leisure industry. Paul Smith, founder of APG Leisure said: “Since my father and his partner established HS Sports over 30 years ago, the primary focus of the business has always been on providing an excellent standard of customer service. The launch of APG Leisure means that we now offer the market a dedicated team of professionals, able to offer tailored solutions to clients in need of commercial aquatic equipment. “Chris and Scott are doing excellent jobs and I’m pleased to say that APG Leisure is already supplying clients around the UK with world leading equipment, as well as preparing to launch some innovative new equipment that will further differentiate the company from the rest of the market.” APG Leisure 01260 543969 www.apgleisure.co.uk

CLEVELAND POOLS DEALT BLOW BY HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND

Exciting Future Secured For Jacob’s Wells Baths

A campaign to save the oldest surviving open-air swimming pools in the UK has been dealt a massive blow after a £4.1m funding application was rejected by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Cleveland Pools Trust has been running a campaign to save the riverside pools on the eastern edge of Bath for the last 13 years. Opened in 1817, the Pools are the oldest surviving openair public swimming pools in the UK and date back to the Regency period. The trust are now awaiting details on the decision to help it understand the reasons behind the rejection.

The future of the Grade II listed and much-cherished Jacob’s Wells Baths has been secured in a deal proposed between Bristol City Council and registered charity Fusion Lifestyle. Fusion has ambitious repair and redevelopment plans for the property, with the intended restoration of public swimming at the site complemented by the creation of new health and wellbeing facilities. Fusion and the City Council will now work together with the aim of completing the lease by April 2018. On entering into the lease, Fusion will aim to undertake essential repairs whilst carrying out surveys and developing their designs for the

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 9+11+17_SPN_Feb_18_News_General.indd 11

major redevelopment works. Tim Mills, Fusion’s Director of Business Development said: “We are absolutely delighted that the City Council has decided to support the community asset transfer of the Jacob’s Wells Baths site to Fusion. We recognise that our restoration and redevelopment plans are ambitious and will be challenging to bring to fruition. It has been over 40 years since the public were able to swim at Jacob’s Wells Baths, but we are really excited by the opportunity to breathe new life into a much cherished local building.” Councillor Asher Craig, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I am

delighted we’ve got a clear way ahead for Jacob’s Wells Baths and can proceed to offer the lease to Fusion Lifestyle. “The plans I have seen for the building set out a strong community focused offer that I am sure will benefit the residents and those from further afield. Throughout this process we were keen to hear from organisations that put community first and it was Fusion’s overall vision as well as a strong and financial viable business plan that impressed us most.”

£10m Horwich Leisure Centre Opens In Bolton

The new Horwich Leisure Centre is now open. The £10m development includes various keep fit facilities along with a 25 metre six lane swimming pool and a separate teaching pool. The new building has taken just over a year to construct and it is part of a wider investment in Horwich including a new primary school and 3G pitch. The centre has been jointly funded by Bolton Council and Bolton Community Leisure Trust (BCLT), who will also manage the facility. Work was officially completed on Friday 24 November 2017 with the formal handover of the keys to the council. Cabinet member for sport, Cllr John Byrne, said: “This is a fantastic new, modern leisure centre. I am delighted that our residents in Horwich and the surrounding area have all these wonderful facilities. We would invite everyone to take the opportunity to come and look around the centre – and use it. It will provide first-class facilities and encourage people to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle. It is an exciting day for Horwich.” The modern facilities will encourage more people to take up sports and leisure and help build better links with schools and clubs which will promote healthier habits and reduce anti-social behaviour. The main contractor for the project was Willmott Dixon Construction, the architect was Faulkner Brown and engineers were William Dyers. F T Leisure was responsible for the design, supply and installation of the water treatment and filtration systems for the two pools and the Oxford Dipper Hoist disabled access system. This was also the first Myrtha Pool Tank installation for F T Leisure. F T Leisure 0161 494 5785 www.ftleisure.co.uk

Certikin Equipment Breathes Life Into Portishead Lido Opened in 1962, Portishead Lido has afforded many families a great day out but after suffering major water loss, its operators – the Portishead Pool Community Trust – were forced to embark on an emergency refurbishment operation. Cracks in the base of the pool tank and the pipework from ground movement were an issue despite them being patched up a number of times. It was always the plan to do a major refurbishment when sufficient funds were available but that had to be brought forward when it was discovered the lido was leaking. Using the combined talents of DG Pool’s Glyn Lucas in commercial filtration and mechanical services and Carl Porter’s knowledge of pool construction, the Trust embarked on upgrading the Lido. Carl set about the design of the pool to ensure that skimmers, sumps and inlets adhered to industry flow rates and velocities. He supervised the installation of a new liner on top of the pool’s old ceramic tiles. To complement the modernisation of the pool tank, the plant room was also refurbished. The sand filters were installed in 1962 so they were replaced with three new filters from Certikin. The pumps were old and they struggled to cope with the required flow rates, especially on busy days. The filtration plant was broken up and removed by DG Pools and replaced with the new plant. All pipework, suction/return fittings and UV lights were supplied by Certikin. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “We always work closely with our customers on big filtration systems to make sure that we comply with all the current relative standards, we always double check the calculations for the flows through inlets grilles, velocities in pipework and filtration rates.” Andy Thatcher of the Portishead Lido Community Trust said: “The job came in on time and on budget and the Trust and pool users are absolutely delighted with the outcome.” Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

Pool Refurbishment Utilises An Innovative Solution

Faced with a difficult task of replacing the light fittings and repainting the ceiling above the pool of a leisure centre within very short timescales, Wigan Council recently approached Floating Pontoon Solutions to understand if they could offer a solution to assist with the refurbishment using their modular pontoon systems. Due to budget constraints it was not an option to empty the pool nor have a complete scaffold system built over the pool, and using their experience of similar scenarios, Floating Pontoon Solutions provided a large 12m x 4m floating pontoon spanning the

12 February 2018 SPN 6+12+14_SPN_Feb_18_News_General.indd 12

whole width of the pool, complete with a 10m wide tower scaffold that could be adjusted depending on the contours of the ceiling. This allowed the electricians and decorators to carry out the work on all the areas as the pontoon was floated down the pool as the work was completed. Additionally, the installation of the system was completed within a day, which also helped as the whole project had to be accomplished in as little as 4 weeks. This modular pontoon system is proving to be a very effective way of undertaking

this type of work in swimming pools, and has also commonly been used for ductwork inspections. Talking about the project, Lee Garner of Floating Pontoon Solutions said: “Due to budget cuts on their leisure facilities, many local authorities are unable to carry out maintenance work on their pools using traditional methods, so they are now looking at other innovative solutions to address this which the pontoon system is doing at a fraction of the cost.” Floating Pontoon Solutions 01253 724747 www.floatingpontoonsolutions.co.uk

Midlands Family Over The Moon With Pool Update Within weeks of moving into their new home, one Midlands family was keen to really make it their own… starting with its existing, dated pool. With young children, safety was top priority, as was fun. But, they didn’t want to compromise on aesthetics. So, the couple turned to James Chapman of JB Elite Services for advice. The update included a new Spectravision Moonlight 700 White that brings light and movement into the pool. The units, which have an ultraflat finish, offer 16 modes of pleasantly transitioning natural

colours. JB Elite also created a focal point for the pool: an LED-backlit waterfall structure. Timbercladded and tiled, the unit also cleverly houses the pool’s DEL Moon automatic slatted cover. The French manufacturer’s cover solutions, available in the UK exclusively through Golden Coast, are best-known for their sleek looks… but that wasn’t why James recommended it. “When it comes to safety, DEL truly excels. Its covers are built to the highest French safety standards. And when it comes to installation, it’s the easiest on

World Leisure Completes Hydrotherapy Pool For Palmerston School Leyland-based World Leisure has completed a hydrotherapy pool and sensory play area for Palmerston School in Liverpool. The new facilities were installed under contract to Kier Construction as part of the school’s relocation into a brand new £7m building in the city’s Aigburth area. Palmerston provides high quality education for pupils aged 11-19 who have severe or profound learning difficulties. The hydrotherapy pool will be used for exercise and stimulation for pupils in a specialised facility, where the water and surrounding air temperatures are significantly warmer than in a regular swimming pool. World Leisure Managing Director Simon Smith said: “The main benefit of hydrotherapy over other physiotherapy is that the warm water, high air temperature and relief of bodyweight combine to alleviate pain relief. For a lot of disabled people, who can frequently live with pain all the time, their first session in a hydrotherapy pool can be their first experience of being pain free. “With calipers, pain and gravity effectively taken away, users can move in ways that they cannot on land. Exercise becomes easier and new movements discovered,

which can be transferred into everyday life.” At Palmerston, World Leisure installed a fully welded stainless steel level deck hydrotherapy pool, with a soft splash play area to the side of the pool incorporating Aquaspritz and Aquapip interactive play equipment from Empex Watertoys®. Head teacher Alison Wheeler said: “We believe all our pupils can achieve if they are provided with a learning environment that meets their needs, and the new hydrotherapy and sensory play areas will very much contribute to this. “For our pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, the environment serves to satisfy their physical, medical and sensory needs. This relief enables pupils to communicate and engage with activities on a variety of levels and in a variety of ways.” World Leisure 01772 284883 www.worldleisurepools.com

the market to install, thanks to our factory training and support from Golden Coast. “And, as if that wasn’t enough, the cover is fully insulated. Because of this, it is very effective at retaining chemicals and heat, while preventing evaporation… Even an advanced automatic cover system like this can practically pay for itself on those savings alone…” said James. Hearing of JB Elite’s renovation, Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “Our team has worked closely with James’ to ensure that this couple got everything they wanted from their pool – including some bits they may not have realised they wanted. “James has created a pool that is perfect for family life – it’s fun, safe and lowmaintenance. What’s more, it’s energy efficient, too!

Manchester Pool Makes Top 10 Sexiest Pools In The World List! A beautiful pool built by Certikin’s Cheshire-based customer, Swimlife UK Ltd, recently hit the headlines on the Daily Mail Online website when it made the top ten sexiest pools in the world shortlist for 2018. The awe-inspiring infinity spa-pool, stuffed full of Certikin equipment, is sited on the top of the King Street Townhouse hotel in Manchester. It boasts floor to ceiling windows offering hotel residents uninterrupted views of the city’s skyline including the clock tower and spires of the Town Hall. The Daily Mail Online website said: “When you think of where hotel swimming pools with jaw-dropping views might be, Manchester in the gritty north of England might not spring to mind. But be prepared to have your mind blown, because the city’s King Street Townhouse hotel is in the running for the accolade of ‘Best Pool with a View’ by Mr & Mrs Smith, the travel club for lovers of extremely ship-shape hotels.” Other pools in the running include a stunning pool in an 18th-century Tuscan villa, an infinity pool in the Maldives and a Sri Lankan hotel pool. NEWS SUFFOLK POOL GETS £3.4M NATIONAL LOTTERY GRANT Ipswich’s Broomhill Pool got the best-possible Christmas present – a £3.4m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund! The grant should mean that people will once again be able to enjoy the outdoor swimming pool during the summer of 2020 – 18 years after its last public opening – in water which will be heated for the first time in 80 years. Constructed in 1938, the Grade II listed art-deco building has been closed for 15 years but will be given a new lease of life as an open air swimming pool and fitness centre. Phase one of the renovation will mean the new health and fitness centre could open towards the end of 2019 – but the swimming pool is expected to open for the 2020 summer season. Whilst the pool’s water will be heated, it will not be as warm as water found in an indoor pool. The facilities will be available to hardy swimmers throughout the year but the swimming season is expected to run from April to October. The National Lotterysupported project, run by fitness and leisure charity Fusion Lifestyle, will restore both the pool, diving boards and a replica clock tower in the art-deco style of the original buildings.

ABERDEEN POOL PLANS STILL NOT FINALISED Ambitious renovation works approved for a Scottish swimming pool a year ago have still to be finalised despite two other local pools closing last year. Last December, council body Sport Aberdeen announced the work on the Northfield pool facility in Aberdeen, but 12 months later, the organisation said there were still “key decisions” to be taken on the pool – although specifics were not given.

A Pool That Stays In The Black! Veering away from traditional blue, the owner of this stunning 7.32m x 3.66m hopper pool wanted something a little bit different, so he embraced the dark side and chose the stunning Elegance vinyl liner from the Certikin Touch range. The range is designed to offer the appearance and texture of natural stone. By combining high quality, thicker than standard (2.0mm as opposed to 1.5mm) vinyl with the latest manufacturing technique of embossing and engraving, the design offers both aesthetic beauty and a very pleasing touch. It’s also highly functional as the Elegance design has an anti-slip option which complies with Cat C of the required DIN standard. Like all vinyls in the Touch range, the Elegance is protected by the Alkorplan 3000 multi-layer lacquering system for durability and longevity. The pool’s owner, Philip Orford said: “I’m incredibly pleased with the liner as it has a very high-quality look and feel. Being able to quickly heat the pool to 32°C is important to me. Thanks to the benefits of the heavy-duty Elegance vinyl, I am able to do that quickly and safely. The contractors were efficient and friendly and did an excellent job. Despite the price differential, I would highly recommend this superior grade liner over and above the standard.” Complementing the eye-catching liner, is

Certikin’s Optimus range of metallic grey and black flow fittings. Designed specifically for dark coloured liner and concrete pools, the Optimus plastic skimmer extension throat, wall inlet, vacuum point and main drain (with anti-vortex grille) give the pool an uninterrupted feel. Philip added: “The black fittings work very well and give the pool a high-end finish. We are absolutely delighted with the whole project. It has surpassed our expectations and given us a summer of fun and we look forward to many more.” Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

World Leisure Provides Pool For Special Educational Needs School Leyland-based World Leisure has provided a hydrotherapy pool for a £15m special educational needs school in Benfleet, Essex. The pool was installed at the new Glenwood School and delivered by construction and infrastructure company, Morgan Sindall. The specially-designed education facility includes state-of-the-art facilities to support 210 children and young adults aged 3-19 years, with severe and multiple learning difficulties. The hydrotherapy pool is one of a number of specialist facilities to help meet the young people’s needs, including different types of sensory rooms, an in-floor trampoline room and an immersive room. All of these will help promote levels of engagement, autonomy, body awareness, sequencing, postural control, organisation of the senses, self-regulation and the confidence needed to access community spaces. The hydrotherapy pool will facilitate the implementation of young people’s physical support programmes in a specialist environment. It also provides an opportunity for young children to gain water confidence and to learn behaviours that increase their ability to access community resources safely. World Leisure Managing Director Simon Smith

says: “The main benefit of hydrotherapy is the combination of warm water, high air temperature and relief of body weight, which results in optimum conditions for the delivery of individualised physiotherapy programmes. For children with significant physical disabilities, this resource may be the only place where they can move independently. “This area can also help encourage social interaction, allowing young people to participate in some small group activities.” Glenwood School head teacher Judith Salter says: “Glenwood School always tries to provide the very best they can for all learners. We are looking forward to using this specialist area, which is fully accessible for all.” World Leisure 01772 284883 www.worldleisurepools.com

Industry Gives Green Light To STA’s New Pool Plant Qualification In December, STA launched a new Pool Plant Operations qualification, which will provide the industry with a more userfriendly, robust and technically advanced syllabus. Covering all aspects of running a modern pool, spa or interactive water feature plant, the content also follows PWTAG guidelines and the new National Occupational Standard SKA PPO1. STA has spent the last year consulting with industry groups to develop the new Level 3 Pool Plant Operations qualification to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and relevant to the industry and all different pool types – from sports and leisure centres to hotels, spas, lidos and interactive water features. Luke Griffiths MCIMSPA, STA’s Technical Manager for Pool Plant explains: “Today’s

commercial swimming pools come in a variety of forms, shapes and sizes, with all having a diverse range of uses and users, and we wanted the qualification’s new syllabus to reflect this. By working with and listening to STA tutors, pool operators, health professionals, regulators and professional groups involved in the health and safety management of swimming pools, we have created all-encompassing content and learning outcomes.” The units covered in the syllabus include principles of healthy and hygienic pool water; principles of water testing; principles of disinfection, pool chemistry and dosing in pool plant operations; principles of mechanical pool plant operations; swimming pool heating, ventilation and

energy efficiency; management practices and health and safety in pool plant operations. Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Tutor adds: “Ultimately our aim is to make sure pool plant operators are appropriately trained and qualified to manage hygienically safe facilities. Having consulted with the industry we have gained valuable insight and feedback, and we are confident that the new qualification covers all elements of modern pool and spa operations in a practical, learner-friendly way.” STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

Easy Remote Energy Monitoring And Management With Updated LYNX System

Certikin Hopes To Move Pool Owners In 2018 New for 2018, Certikin is proud to announce that it is supplying the innovative Tieleman moving floor system that has proved such a huge success in pools across Northern Europe. Approved and guaranteed to European standards, the custom-built moveable floor is multi-functional – it can be submerged to any depth and can even feature a slope. Water hydraulic driven, the floor is raised at an operating speed up to 0.5 m/min and can be adjusted to any height at 1cm intervals. Operation is simple with each moving floor system coming with a touchscreen control panel plus there’s an optional digital depth display available too. When fully raised to the surface, the pool is out of sight, producing a secure barrier and allowing the deck space to be used for other activities. In the raised position,

the floor reduces heat loss and evaporation leading to savings for pool owners. Suitable for both commercial and domestic use, dividing walls can also be used to create two separate operating areas. Walk in steps can also be integrated into the floors making access for a wide range of potential users a possibility. The floors have minimal moving parts to reduce maintenance and featuring 316L stainless steel components. A wide range of materials can be used to finished the floor – from stone and ceramic tiles through to stainless steel and polymer. Suitable for skimmer and over flow pools, Certikin offers a full service from design through to installation. Certikin International 01993 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

Owners who are frequently away from their swimming pools should take a fresh look at Heatstar’s remote operational and energy monitoring system for their pool environmental control units – the LYNX energy management system. The LYNX system has recently been changed and updated to ensure the system remains at the cutting edge of remote control and monitoring technology. The star at the centre of this technology is a state-of-the-art touch screen interface enabling users to access and interact directly with their Heatstar system from a clear single screen display. Based on a pioneering intuitive interface, the full colour touch screen display gives users finger tip access to all control and monitoring functions. It also has the ability for users to alter temperature and humidity levels plus adjust set points to suit both application and other requirements. The screen layouts and controls have been specifically designed with the user in mind resulting in clear and and easy to use interface. The high-resolution colour touch display has been designed so that the user is never more than four touches away from the information they need. The home screen uses a clear dynamic colour scheme to denote the correct function of the Heatstar unit, allowing the user to see with ease whether the system is cooling, heating, or dehumidifying. Meanwhile, smart alarms serve to notify the user in the event of any service requirements. Status and information screens are just a touch away allowing the user to see every function of the Heatstar system, including set points, fan speeds and current operating mode. The LYNX Energy Management System from Heatstar has the ability to deliver user specific web pages to a PC or mobile device running internet browser software. This enables the user to access and monitor their Heatstar system over the internet from the other side of the world or the other side of the building. The new system can be seen at SPATEX 2018 on Heatstar’s stand – E58. Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com

Underwater Treadmill Includes Unique Gait Analysis System The Aqua Inspire gait analysis system is the first system to be incorporated in an underwater treadmill where sensor mats underneath the treadmill belt measure force and pressure whilst patients are exercising on the treadmill. The system will scan and capture accurate force, pressure and spatialtemporal parameters meaning a therapist can easily compare left and right sides with symmetry tables and use gait cycle tables to provide insights into stride length, time, velocity and more. As gait issues can be indicative of underlying health problems, identifying and addressing abnormalities and asymmetries is of the utmost importance. Gait information can be displayed in a variety of ways including graphs, pressure profiles, tables or charts to enable therapists to identify and assess asymmetries, abnormalities or treatment effectiveness. Images of three regions of the foot can

be displayed for detailed analysis of how the foot is functioning during gait. The system provides easy comparison of pre and post treatment conditions.

Offering the ultimate in aquatic therapy, Swimming Pool Fitness recently installed this unique treadmill solution in a stainless steel hydrotherapy pool with a moving pool floor. The technologically advanced product, controlled by a touch screen, included an electronic incline and was integrated into the floor which can then be lowered to the required depth depending the condition being treated or desired exercise regime. A Crystal Clear Solution To Automatic Dosing More and more pool owners are discovering the benefits of outsourcing their dosing needs to automated systems but while automatic chemical dosing can be a blessing for pool owners and a great profit centre for the industry, not every company can deliver the specialist knowledge or resources required. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “For owners, there are crystal-clear benefits to automatic dosing systems. It removes a lot of effort attached to pool ownership, such as avoiding chemical dosing mistakes, eliminating time spent testing and – above all else – ensuring your water is clean and clear. “But, while we’ve seen this market grow, it’s not been the easiest opportunity for our industry to respond to. For many in the trade, any potential profits are seemingly outweighed by the commitment companies must make. “As well as increasing your

22 February 2018 SPN 20+22+25_SPN_Feb_18_Prod+Eco_News.indd 22

knowledge on the subject, any company serious about automatic dosing must take on additional staff and ensure training needs are met.” Golden Coast set out to find a simple solution to this problem. “We wanted to provide an easy-to-use service which would allow every pool company to offer chemical dosing – without increasing overheads or creating a lot of extra work,” explained Jamie. At SPATEX 2017, the company revealed a solution – Crystal. Designed to make life easier for pool companies and their customers, the thirdparty automatic dosing service equips trade businesses for every possibility. Through Crystal, pool companies can outsource every step of the automatic chemical dosing process to Crystal’s team of experienced engineers. These professionals possess the knowledge, skills and training necessary to do everything from conducting a free site survey to specifying equipment and service

requirements, right through to delivering a planned maintenance schedule.

A Natural Remedy For Hay Fever Sufferers Whilst the majority of people can enjoy the warmer days of spring to their fullest, for pollen allergy sufferers, it’s a time of year which can often be a nightmare. KLAFS have highlighted that there is a completely natural way to relieve the discomfort though – through the regular use of a sauna. After all, using a sauna improves the blood supply to the mucous membranes and regular use is also a good workout for the immune system. The targeted, repeated application of a strong heat and cold stimulus trains the ability of all blood vessels in the skin and mucous membranes to contract and reopen quickly. The soothing sauna warmth also alleviates the symptoms of allergic asthma, because it relieves the cramped muscles in the deep branches of the bronchial tubes. However, especially for pollen allergy sufferers, sauna visits should not only take place during the cold season. The positive effects of regular sauna sessions are particularly easy to bring into a home with the Zoom Sauna S1 from KLAFS. In addition, the S1

filter – similar to the pollen filter in the car – cleans the outside air from annoying pollen. Sufferers from pollen allergy can now also take a deep breath in the sauna. As one of the leading manufacturers in the sauna market, the company also offers numerous other attractive design possibilities for every room situation and every requirement. Microsalt SaltProX is especially recommended as a supplement for pollen allergy sufferers. With this battery-operated,

Catalina Brand To Benefit As LPI Purchases Premium Leisure

Aqua Design & Leisure, whose range includes the Catalina Spas brand in the UK, have announced that LPI (the parent company of Catalina in the USA), has recently acquired Florida based Premium Leisure spas and swim spas. The plan is to keep the 90,000 sq ft production facility in place in Florida and relocate the Catalina swim spa production division there. Premium Leisure spa production will be relocated to an existing 320,000 sq ft Tennessee facility. This move will increase efficiency and will see an almost immediate opportunity to expand production for both spa and swim spa ranges. The move will make the newly equipped

Florida plant the world’s largest dedicated swim spas manufacturing facility. The skilled Catalina production teams have agreed to relocate to Florida to help with the seamless transition and to ensure that the quality – which Catalina swim spas are famous for – is retained. This acquisition will almost immediately solve the capacity limitations which LPI has experienced since acquiring Catalina Spas in late 2016. Stephen Crabb, Managing Director of Aqua Design & Leisure says 2017 saw a record number of orders for Catalina swim spas that unfortunately resulted in longer than planned production times. This move will allow LPI to produce more units to meet the growing demand for Catalina swim spas and spas with the advantage of further room to expand. Aqua Design & Leisure are currently building their UK stock levels for the year ready for immediate delivery and with the new facility, any non-stocked model orders should see a production time of nearer to six weeks. Marquis Adds New UK Account Executive

Hot tub manufacturer Marquis® have expanded by adding Dan Johnson as their new Account Executive for the UK. Dan is an award-winning sales person with almost 20 years of experience and will cover the whole of the country. “One of the biggest challenges in hiring for this position is the long learning curve of products, programs and dealer relationships. With Dan, his experience at Golden Coast and in retail, and his relationships with almost half of our Marquis UK Dealers, we negate those challenges which can prove to be very impactful for everyone,” said Steve Hasenmueller, Marquis’ Director of Global Sales. “We are very pleased and excited to welcome Dan and his young family to the Marquis family.” Dan’s strength lies in his years of experience working in warehouse spa distribution and as a retail sales person. His experience on both sides of the spa business gives him a wealth of industry knowledge and involvement. In addition, his familiarity with Marquis’ product and dealer base encourage valuable relationships from the start. “I’m ecstatic to be heading up the Marquis hot tub dealer network; having worked with Marquis years ago, I know they are a truly great company. For me, it feels like a homecoming,” said Dan. “The role itself will be varied and challenging, yet at the same time a supremely rewarding task.” From his home in the South West of England and out on the road, Dan will be the primary point of contact for UK dealers and fully resourced to help and support them with any enquiry.

Darlly Europe Announce Revolutionary SaniStream Dosing System Solution The Health & Safety Executive’s recent publication ‘HSG282’, sets out specific and detailed guidelines for hot tubs installed in holiday let situations and places risk responsibility on holiday let owners and operators to ensure their installations are compliant. Section 76 of HSG282 deals with the specification of hot tubs installed in such a setting and prescribes that hot tubs must be “disinfected using bromine or chlorine through the use of an inline disinfectant feeder”. This ensures that the disinfectant is dosed continuously while the hot tub is in use or in a filter cycle, and avoids the peaks and troughs in disinfectant levels that would occur by hand dosing or the use of floating type dispensers. The great news is the team at Darlly Europe have invented a competitive and effective solution for HSG282 compliance for the majority of hot tubs on sale in the UK with the launch of their

revolutionary new SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System. SaniStream is an inline dosing dispenser which allows for the continuous dosing of chlorine and bromine tablets or granules. It is fully adjustable to allow for the regulation of sanitiser flow depending on the demands of the particular spa it is fitted in and it does not require the modification of any of the hot tub’s existing plumbing. SaniStream Direct Line Filtration System is designed to install in the void in the centre of an adapted Darlly filter cartridge, so that dosing is inline and continuous whenever the spa is in a filter cycle or in actual use – satisfying the key demands of HSG282 compliance. The design also allows easy access for inspection, refill or replacement, while keeping it locked away out of sight of consumers using the spa. Darlly Europe 01952 580500 www.darllyeurope.com

SWIMTAG Strengthens Foothold In Norway SWIMTAG has completed its 13th installation in Norway through its Nordic distribution partner, SWIMTAG Nordic AS. The most recent install at the Gamlingen Pool in Stravenger on the West Coast of Norway is already attracting a significant number of users every month and helping the operator to deliver an enhanced user experience. Speaking about SWIMTAG, Rasmus Gjesdal, General Manager at Stavanger Svømmestadion, Gamlingen, said: “We introduced SWIMTAG as a new offer in August 2017. After three months of use, we already have 450 users, of which, several participate in our local challenge and competitions. The system is easy to use (we offer SWIMTAG as self-service) and feedback from our users is exclusively positive.” The first install in Norway

took place in 2014 and since then there has been a steady increase in interest from various operators. Eirik Aksnes, SWIMTAG’s Nordic distribution partner, said: “In Norway, swimming is largely viewed more as a holistic pastime than a serious fitness solution but this is starting to change with more operators beginning to see the value regular pool based activity can have on a community’s health and wellbeing.” Most operators in Norway offer SWIMTAG free of charge to pool users, viewing it as an opportunity to add value rather than drive revenue. Eirik, added: “SWIMTAG is now installed in more than 200 pools worldwide and there is overwhelming evidence to prove that the system is most successful when this approach is taken. Some operators still insist on passing on the charge to the swimmer but this always results in lower engagement. The financial value in SWIMTAG results from the increase in swimmer retention and the positive influence this has on income rather than the increase in revenue generated from a point of sale approach.”

Futuristic Swimming Complex Rejuvenates Neglected Area Of Hong Kong Hong Kong’s futuristic Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, designed by Farrells, has won an American Architecture Prize in the Recreational Architecture category. Completed last year, the pool complex includes a 50-metre outdoor pool, an outdoor leisure pool, indoor and outdoor massage baths, a 50-metre indoor pool, and an indoor training pool. It also incorporates an outdoor garden sheltered beneath the tip of the building’s characteristic roof. Built on a derelict lot beside Victoria Harbour, the pool has helped rejuvenate a forgotten corner of an otherwise vibrant Kennedy Town, a historic district not far from Hong Kong’s city centre. “We have been working in Kennedy Town now for nearly a decade,” commented Stefan Krummeck, a director at Farrells. “This is one of the most exciting and characterful districts in Hong Kong, and we sought to contribute to that by designing this pool as a new community hub with a dynamic architectural form.” The building owes its distinctive shape to the unique triangular site. Inspired by a shell, the building addresses the main road and tram entrance to Kennedy Town, serving as an icon for the community.

©Farrells

IN BRIEF

The form of the sweeping zinc roof responds to the building’s context. The orientation of the outdoor pool maximises views of Victoria Harbour and the outlying islands, while shielding swimmers from the noise and pollution of the main bus and tram routes to the east. Key criteria for the selection of materials for the facade and roof were light weight, ability to span the pool hall, transparency and performance against solar gain. Laminated glass with a high performance PVB layer was chosen for window walls while insulated PTFE membrane was used for the roof skylight, flooding the indoor pool hall with pleasant, diffused natural light. Operable windows allow for natural ventilation of indoor spaces, reducing reliance on air conditioning.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Happy New Year! BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights industry best practice, new collaborations and changes that lay ahead for the hot tub sector

W

hat an action-packed start to the year there promises to be at SPATEX 2018, with top quality exhibitors throughout the Ricoh Arena, plus an excellent education programme (coordinated by the ISPE, with additional input from other esteemed organisations such as the STA, Swim England and PWTAG). Ross Alcock at the ISPE has again organised a tremendous workshop programme. There are also fantastic events taking place such as the Industry Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening and also the SPATEX party on Wednesday evening. The Industry Gala Evening will not only feature the 2018 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards, but EUSA is hosting the 2017 European Pool and Spa Awards on the same evening. These awards are the 5th annual event to celebrate the work of the 14 national pool and spa associations that are members of the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations. Our colleagues from across Europe are due to attend this event, and I look forward to welcoming them to the UK. Winners of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards are eligible to be entered into the 2018 European Pool and Spa Awards, to be held at Piscine Global in Lyon, in November 2018. The national pool and spa associations in Europe continue to seek closer co-operation, and this is being extended to colleagues

from other places around the world. At the aquanale exhibition in Cologne (last November), there was a World Pool & Hot Tub Summit, and the result of a number of countries discussing ideas is the formation of a World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA). It is hoped to work on a series of actions to strengthen the voice of our industry across the world, so I look forward to the next meeting which is being proposed to be held at Piscine Global in Lyon later this year. The European standard for domestic spas and hot tubs (EN 17125) has now been signed off and will soon be placed into the committee system ready for publication from September 2018 onwards. This work has been possible due to the close collaboration of a number of funding countries and other partners providing additional experts to ensure the standard could be developed. It has been an honour to be the Convenor (Chairman) for this group, and I would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all of the experts (especially those representing the UK – Patrick Thorpe, Howard Gosling, Jatinder Sidhu, Mike McCague and Nathan Coelho). I would also like to express my gratitude to Juliane Jung from DIN who expertly guided us all through the standardisation process. Back to UK news now, and as the implications of ‘HSG 282’ (‘The control of Legionella and other infectious agents in spa pool systems’) continue to be understood by holiday park businesses, BISHTA continues to work hard with the hot tub industry to ensure they know what their responsibilities are regarding HSG 282. Information is available in the water hygiene management courses and also additional training for the holiday park sector is being rolled out this year. With all of the changes happening to

spas and hot tubs, now is also the time to update the BISHTA Standards and a 2018 version will be available shortly. The BISHTA Standards will reflect the significant changes arising from EN 17125 and HSG 282, but will also see an update to the guidance created by changes in other documents. One of the changes will be to the document regarding electrical requirements for hot tubs, as there is a growing call by electrical experts for outdoor hot tubs to be earthed via an earth rod (electrode). More news is awaited from the updates to the Electrical Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) when the 18th edition is available this summer. Requests for the Electrical Awareness Workshops run by BISHTA continue to increase, with seven courses now completed and more planned this year. To check for availability and/or to go on a waiting list, please contact the BISHTA office on 01264 356211 or email admin@bishta.co.uk Both BISHTA and SPATA aim to support their respective members with information and advice, on pages 36 and 37, there is a feature on some of the services provided to members. Networking Opportunities

“As their strapline logo highlights, BISHTA’s principal focus is to ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’ providing consumers with a clear route to buy with confidence from BISHTA members. At Goodwins Hot Tubs we aim high, and we were recently awarded top dealer for the 5th year running for Elite Spas. We ensure we have excellent procedures in place for installing hot tubs and developing our workforce. Having attended the Electrical Course offered by BISHTA, this year, we have learned some great new information and will be further improving the procedures that we use. The course opened our eyes to some important safety messages, and we will be following these in future!” Dan Goodwin – Goodwins Hot Tubs (BISHTA)

“In 1984, I joined my father Edgar L Monks to work alongside him at Elm Leisure Ltd. Having the guidance of a wise teacher can often lead you to think you know all there is to know. However, I have learnt there is still (and always will be) a lot more to learn as the industry changes. As a SPATA member, it gives me the confidence to feel that I have a ‘hotline’ to Jim Gordon and Peter Lang (SPATA Technical Advisors) for their superb advice when it comes to a technical question or general advice. Elm Leisure Ltd has been a proud member since January 1974, and as a whole, the SPATA package (including conversations with Chris Hayes) and help from the ‘ladies in the office’ (who are always happy to help) is invaluable. For me, this makes SPATA worth its weight in GOLD for the support and advice.” Benjamin H Monks – Elm Leisure (SPATA)

“Keeping abreast of changes in standards and legislation is part of our responsibility as SPATA members, and if companies involved in the wet leisure industry fail in this respect, they may make expensive mistakes in the conduct of their projects. For me, keeping up with BS & EN standards along with the SPATA Standards is crucial, and the most recent means of accessing this vast & vital information online has helped to ensure that this material is readily on hand whenever it is needed. When things go wrong as they do from time to time, then the risk of litigation is always there, so prevention is better than cure. This is where SPATA through the standards and updates along with other initiatives, do their utmost to keep us members and our customers safe.” Michael Cormacey – Aqua Blue Designs (SPATA)

“Being a long-standing SPATA member has provided our company with many benefits over the years, allowing us to offer the assurance and peace of mind our customers require. SPATA membership brings an added level of professionalism ensuring a definite advantage when competing against Non– SPATA members. The SPATA Standards detail a clear working framework supported by technical inspectors, who help ensure those standards are maintained and having attended a recent Regional Meeting, I was very reassured by the quality of the information provided to continue to keep me updated on what is going on in the industry.” Mike Kinge – Harlequin Swimming Pools (SPATA)

“Having been informed by my client that he wanted to pay me via the main contractor, I replied that my preference was to safeguard the money for both him and for me by placing the funds into a client account via SPATA’s Stakeholder service. Once the client had seen the paperwork, we both signed the document and the client made payments to SPATA. I am delighted to say the project is now finished and the client is very happy with the end result and I have been paid via SPATA, so that makes me happy too!” David Ashmore – Planscapes Leisure (SPATA)

“As a SPATA member, I have first-hand experience of the qualified leads SPATA can provide. An example is a customer who contacted me, having spoken to the SPATA team. They explained what SPATA was about and provided her with the contact numbers of SPATA members in her area to ring, New Dawn Pools, being one of them. After a bit of negotiation, we got the order for this pool, and the client said she was so impressed that she would give my details to her friend who was also interested in an outdoor pool. This duly happened and I managed to secure that order too. This second client then passed on my details to her friend, who also wanted a pool. The chain reaction started and is still going on. So from one phone call a couple of years ago to SPATA, I have installed five pools, two renovations and have gained about ten service contracts. All in all about £360,000 worth of orders! Well done SPATA.” Richard Adams – New Dawn Pools (SPATA)

“Last May, we were hit by a devastating blow to our business when we had £28,000 worth of stock stolen. We contacted BISHTA as non-members, and Sallie Leslie-Golding (BISHTA & SPATA PR & Marketing Manager) quickly prepared a press release and emailed it out to our local press and media which led to substantial local coverage. Following the theft, we decided to relocate our showroom and realised that it was integral to join BISHTA. We are now back on track, bigger, better, stronger and BISHTA members! We needed help promoting our relaunch event, so again we asked BISHTA for support. Our relaunch went exceptionally well, and we thank BISHTA for all their help and support, the benefits of BISHTA membership are undoubtedly worthwhile”. Liam Shelley − All Weather Leisure (BISHTA)

“Being a member of BISHTA gives you access to many features and benefits, one of these is being able to enter the Annual awards. Complete Spas always enter the awards, and throughout the year we look for installs that we feel have that ‘special something’ that will catch the eye of the judges. I feel that winning an award gives not only potential customers the confidence in the company that they are handing their hard earned money over to, but also gives all the employees a big buzz and satisfaction in a job well done. The industry gala awards evening is also a great event with the chance to catch up with fellow members and let your hair down (well most of us). If members are unsure whether to enter, then just don’t think ‘we have better installs’ just do it. You never know, and you will have fun doing it.” Peter Grinnall – Complete Spas (BISHTA)

“When required, Wright Hassall has given Buckingham Swimming Pools Limited correct and helpful advice. Legal advice during projects is of the utmost importance, both dealing with clients, or more specifically with the majority of main contractors. Small companies also need protection, and therefore helpful legal advice is welcome. Wright Hassall understands that advice must always be succinct and commercially exact. Costs for small companies are paramount. The advice which Wright Hassall has provided to Buckingham Swimming Pools Limited has ranged from giving guidance before subcontract orders to providing necessary and essential recommendations on adjudication matters. During my career as a qualified Quantity Surveyor, I have had experience of working with main contractors, professional quantity surveyors and Government bodies on some of the most significant civil engineering and building projects in the country. I, therefore, can recognise the help and advice that Wright Hassall has given to Buckingham Swimming Pools Limited over many years.” Chris Johnson – Buckingham Swimming Pools (SPATA)

“I regularly use the members’ area of the SPATA website for staying abreast of industry best practice and keeping up to date with developments and events. Resources that I find very useful are the member’s factsheets. It is evident that they are produced by a team of people with vast knowledge in their field. The advice is provided in plain and easy to understand language to support the industry. Recently the SPATA Standards have been made available online too; it’s great to know that going forward I am only an internet connection away from double-checking a relevant standard via the Member’s Area or a BS Standard via SPATA’s BSOL subscription. I no longer have to wait until I return to the office to answer that all-important question.” Jon Herbert – Rockingham Swimming Pools (SPATA)

With thanks to our BISHTA and SPATA members for their feedback in this article. Being a trade association member stands as a badge of endorsement that can help to bring many advantages, recognising businesses that uphold Industry standards and who are willing to abide by a Code of Ethics. Members are also able to play their part in helping these industry bodies to be the voice of the wet leisure industry with government officials and other key decision-makers at home and abroad.

Reflections From The BSPF President In this article, Alex Kemsley looks back on his two years in office as the BSPF President

A

lot has happened in the past two years, both for me and also for the industry and it has been my pleasure to be the BSPF President during this time. It seems so long ago that I hosted my President’s Weekend at Brooklands, in Surrey. The event was a big success, as it was a chance to meet up with people from all parts of the industry in a relaxed atmosphere, in such an inspiring combination of historical and modern engineering at this iconic venue. During my time in office, I have come to appreciate the amount of work ‘behind the scenes’ that is undertaken by each of the five companies within the BSPF family. Each one focusses on a particular area of the industry to help support and grow it, both at home and abroad. This can best be illustrated by the completion of the first European standards for domestic pools (EN 16582 and EN 16713) which was coordinated by SPATA as the UK representatives on behalf of BSI. Recently, the final drafting of EN 17125 (domestic spas and hot tubs) has been coordinated by BISHTA (with useful help from SPATA). Collectively, this has meant a large number of standards have been written to ensure there are some minimum standards across Europe (and these will hopefully be strengthened over time). Juggling my commitments with the role of BSPF President and BISHTA Chairman has not always been easy and increasing the tenure from one year to two years is a bigger commitment, but one I readily agreed to, as it allows more time to see things through, with help from the BSPF office. One of the big highlights has been seeing

competitors, colleagues and friends at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, as this is always a great platform to showcase the best of BISHTA and SPATA, providing the industry with invaluable PR for the start of the year. Being one of the hosts of these awards has been a great honour, and I would like to thank Richard Carrington for sharing this duty with me. As BSPF President, my role has been to oversee the work of the staff in Andover, and this has allowed me to pass on some of my knowledge to help the team take direction and fine tune what they do on behalf of the members. Some of this work involves the BSPF office liaising with colleagues throughout Europe, as part of our commitment to EUSA and now also with other colleagues from further afield, as part of the World Alliance of Pool & Spa Associations (WAPSA). At home, BISHTA has been very important to me, as I have been Chairman for four years. My most satisfying achievement has been to see the formulation of the water hygiene common syllabus that has developed and with a number of tutors running this course, it is great to know that many industry personnel are receiving information that will help them appreciate the importance of promoting safe spa water. As BSPF’s Immediate Past President, I now look forward to being invited onto the

SPATEX Board and will be keen to offer my thoughts on ways of further enhancing the services provided through the industry show during my initial two-year tenure. With the growth afforded by SPATEX now being in Coventry, this has allowed for greater profits for the industry to be distributed to a variety of industry bodies, such as the ISPE, BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and also to PIP. It is PIP’s role to raise the profile of the industry to reach out to consumers to increase their awareness and interest in our products. Away from my role with the BSPF, life is also hectic with Simon Dickson (my business partner) at Compass Pools and Waterstream, as we have recently moved and expanded our premises in West Sussex. On a personal level, I am enjoying parenthood with my fiancée Nicole Tingley and our gorgeous son, Oliver, so as you can see there is very little time for anything else at the moment! My time as BSPF President is now done, so I wish my successor Will Dando ‘good luck’ in his two-year stint as President. I hope to remain involved with BISHTA’s Committee and at some point, I would be keen to serve on SPATA’s National Council, as I feel it is very important to give something back to the industry and having experienced being on each of the other companies, I hope that I have something to offer, if members wish to give me the opportunity.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Working Together To Build Consumer Trust And Awareness If you are in the business of Wet Leisure, you will be pleased to know that there is a task force working for the benefit of your industry!

P

ool (and Spa) Industry Promotions (PIP) is a committee of professionals with the shared purpose to ensure that there is the adequate promotion of the wet leisure industry, both within the trade and also most importantly, to the wider consumer audience. PIP is currently chaired by Jamie Adams (Golden Coast) and supported by the current committee members: Mark Ramsden (CPC), Jeremy Chalke (Spruce Pools), Neil Dalziel (Aquaflex), Alex Kemsley (Waterstream), Phil Gordon (SPC), Jon Herbert (Rockingham Swimming Pools) and Arun Sarna (Hot Tub Suppliers). The work is coordinated by Sallie Leslie-Golding (PIP’s PR & Marketing Manager), with assistance from Chris Hayes (BSPF’s Managing Director).

WHAT DOES PIP WANT TO ACHIEVE? Every relevant household has an awareness of the benefits of wet leisure products and PIP try hard to ensure everyone likely to choose to buy a pool, hot tub, etc. is aware of the benefits of working with BISHTA and SPATA members. There is a range of goals that PIP has set itself to achieve and they include: 1. Deciding on the balance between traditional versus digital media 1a. Working with members to build and develop media interest stories: Gaining consumer press/media coverage through the

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 39_SPN_Feb_18_PIP.indd 39

British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (and EUSA Awards) winners and case studies as well as trade press coverage that can be used to build trade profiles and encourage new membership. 1b. Building specific consumer media relationships: Building on PIP’s press/media contacts list and refining them with an aim to have more one-to-one press/media relationships, for those that influence end users. 1c. Achieving increased and broader digital media coverage: Harnessing digital opportunities to widen PR reach – developing PIP’s press/media contacts and press communication. 1d. Online Presence Management = Growing online profiles: Raising the profiles of BISHTA and SPATA online through continued development of each organisation’s website, SEO, digital and social marketing with end users. 1e. Amplifying the Trade’s profile through national and local events: Creating activity to promote the trade profiles on a national level with a resource for members to run local level activities. Providing newsworthy stories nationally and locally. Providing consumer interaction for driving web traffic, the opportunity to gain a database and share leads with members. 2. Encouraging new members: As a by-product of the consumer focus, the PR and Marketing function above can help to promote the features and benefits of

membership and maximising trade publicity, wherever possible.

PIP’S STRATEGY The committee typically meets on a quarterly basis, as well as holding a focused strategy meeting in November each year to discuss plans for the year ahead. Meeting formats are initiated by quarterly reports compiled by Sallie Leslie-Golding, who has the responsibility to see the committee’s actions through to fruition. Sallie commented: “The PIP committee provide a valuable resource to help me in my task to meet the strategy set out above. STA POOL PLANT – BEST PRACTICE

Promoting Safe, Healthy And Hygienic Practices In this edition, Luke Griffiths MCIMSPA, STA’s Technical Manager for Pool Plant takes a look at how commercial pool facilities can ensure best practice despite being faced with the pressures of ever-present budget restrictions

T

he Local Government Association (LGA) recently reported that in the ten years to 2020, councils will have seen a £16bn reduction in core government funding, leaving budgets severely squeezed and in a lot of cases it’s at the expense of investing in leisure facilities. Figures from Sport England also show 58% of sports halls and 60% of swimming pools were more than 20 years old in 2015 – and of these nearly a quarter had not been refurbished in 20 years. This has also led to perpetuating concerns within the industry that the people employed to maintain and operate these swimming pools are not upholding their pool plant qualifications, or receiving any professional training at all due to the budget restrictions. For STA this is a major concern and first and foremost we would argue that with the threat of bacteria such as legionella and cryptosporidium, professionally qualified and trained staff has to be the first and most important step in preventing the spread of such diseases around wet leisure facilities. We all recognise that there is an inherent list of accepted risks involved with swimming pools, including a high risk of infection, but they can only be addressed by maintaining a well-managed plant and by ensuring correct procedures are followed by trained operators. After all, once the doors are opened to bathers, senior management have a legal duty to provide a safe hygienic environment. However, another key area for STA in 2018, which costs very little in practice and can save money, is for pool operators to proactively promote safe, healthy and hygienic practices to their bathers. Aside from the mechanics of pool plant management, this is an important chapter within our new Pool Plant Operations qualification.

pools. To promote healthy, hygienic swimming access to the pool from the changing rooms should be through the toilet area and then the pre-swim shower area. Allowing bathers to shower after using the toilet; where possible shower cubicles and soap (potentially) should be provided so users can thoroughly wash to reduce contaminants getting into the pool further. Foot traffic is another design consideration; through routes should be planned to minimise repetitive circulation of users and to minimise the chances of contamination brought in on foot, pushchairs, etc. depositing on surfaces or reaching the pools. Convenient nappy changing facilities should be provided within the changing area and should be accessible for male and female users. They should be clean, nappy disposal bins should be provided and emptied regularly.

Swimming should be a healthy, enjoyable experience but in addition to poor design, a lack of hygiene practices can result in dangerous pollution in the pools and changing areas. The health benefits of swimming should not be outweighed by the risks from pollution. Pollution from bathers can never be stopped completely – however, prevention is better than cure. By following simple design recommendations and implementing reasonable pre-swim procedures the quality of the water and air can be significantly improved.

PRE-SWIM / EXCLUSIONS POLICY A pre-swim policy or exclusions policy stating when people should not swim may be difficult to enforce but it is important in highlighting to users when it is not safe for them to swim. It is more a case of bather education than enforcement. The policy

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 19/01/2018 23:09

STA POOL PLANT – BEST PRACTICE should contain guidance on when not to swim and what pre-swim hygiene routine to follow before entering the pool. The policy should be understood by all tiers of staff and promoted to users. Below are some examples of what should be included in the policy: Do not: • Swim if you have diarrhoea or have suffered a diarrhoeal illness within the last 48 hours • Swim if you have been diagnosed with cryptosporidiosis until 14 days after diarrhoea has stopped • Swim if you are currently suffering with a contagious infection • Swim if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol • Urinate in the pool. Please ensure: • You use the toilet before swimming • You shower thoroughly before swimming with soap (including babies and children) • Babies, children still using nappies and incontinent adults should wear an appropriate swimming nappy and tight fitted swimming pants.

SWIMMING NAPPIES Operators should promote the use of swimming nappies by making them available from the facility, this could be as saleable item or provided free of charge. STA recommends that babies, children still using nappies and incontinent adults should wear a disposable or reusable swim nappy underneath an additional neoprene coated or equivalent over nappy cover with close fitting leg and waist ribs. The disposable swim nappy and neoprene or equivalent nappy cover should be the correct size to limit the possibility of leaks of faecal matter. Guidance on nappy requirements should be communicated to bathers through notices and posters. Swim nappies should be available from the site. Sites have options to provide these as resale items, possibly at cost price or even free of charge. When you consider the potential costs of closure and/ or outbreak it’s a relatively small price to pay.

Trials with school children showed that pre-swim showering removes significant amounts of dirt and bacteria that otherwise end up in the pool

to swim and pre-swim hygiene is in the form of a poster. Posters can be done in house or can be purchased from STA, CIMSPA or PWTAG. Take drowning as an example of a risk associated with swimming pools. Most pools have appropriately qualified lifeguards as a method of drowning prevention and posters and signage advising swimmers of pool do’s and don’ts. Promoting bather hygiene should be just as prevalent. The posters should follow the users journey to the swimming pool from the reception, changing room entrance, toilets, showers and a final reminder before access to the pool. Bather hygiene promotion is less visible in the UK. Some pools in Europe have shower supervisors who ensure swimmers shower and are wearing a swim cap before using the pool. Promoting bather hygiene can be a taboo subject in some swimming pools with certain management and staff fearing offending customers or putting them off by asking them to use the toilet and shower thoroughly with soap before using the pool.

OVERSHOES

COMMUNICATION

Facilities may want to consider prohibiting outdoor footwear in changing areas or providing overshoes to reduce the amount of contamination walked through changing rooms and subsequently walked onto the poolside and into the pools. This practice not only prevents some pollution getting into the pools but also ensures the changing rooms stay cleaner for longer saving on staff time cleaning and cost of chemicals and equipment. Although there is the added expense of the overshoes if these are provided, it can be minimal and offset by the savings on cleaning chemicals and staff time.

The policy should be communicated to all staff and staff should understand the importance of pre-swim hygiene. Staff should be empowered to advise users of the preswim practices and the reasons for them. There should be an emphasis on raising awareness of pre-swim hygiene with children using the swimming pools, whether from schools or parents taking children swimming. This can be in the form of letters, flyers, emails, etc. to re-enforce the policy. Teaching children about pre-swim hygiene and getting them into good habits from an early age will hopefully stay with them through to adulthood.

POSTERS Perhaps the simplest method of communicating the importance of when not

PWTAG RESEARCH PWTAG conducted some trials to see if

there were benefits from pre-swim hygiene. Schoolchildren swam after a shower or footbath or neither. Controlled showers at different stages of the process measured the amount of dirt, sweat and microbial debris. The results were clear. • Pre-swim showering does remove significant amounts of dirt and bacteria that otherwise end up in the pool. Up to two-thirds of the sweat products, and one third of the bacteria, are removed • Even without soaping, showering removes much of the pollution • A shower removes five times as much pollution as a footbath. In summary, while the industry fights budget costs there is still more we can do. Appropriate bather hygiene will not only make using the facilities a more pleasurable experience for the users in terms of improving the quality of the water and air, but can save the facility money too. The facility can save on utility costs; less water required for backwashing, resulting in less energy required to heat the water, less pool chemical usage. As well as these factors it reduces the risk of a faecal incident in the pool which can lead to pool closures, outbreaks, a loss in revenue or even legal fees from resulting outbreaks. To hear more, STA is organising its first dedicated Pool Plant conference at SPATEX 2018 on 30 January 2018 – all delegates will receive ½ CPD Point. REWARDING LOYALTY

Zodiac’s Premium Scheme is a Tropical Success In this edition, we take a look at the Zodiac Premium programme – a loyalty scheme operated in the UK for Zodiac by Plymouth-based distribution company Lighthouse

Z

odiac Premium is recognised as arguably the number one loyalty scheme for swimming pool retailers and installers in Europe, if not the world. Renowned for their high-end products and innovation, Zodiac recognise the value in ensuring all dedicated retailers are rewarded for their hard work through a loyalty scheme like no other. Since the scheme was launched in 2011, it has grown to host over 300 members in mainland Europe. Of these, 17 are based in the UK.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? The Zodiac Premium scheme is open to all swimming pool retailers/installers who meet the financial pre-requisites set out by the scheme and show a loyalty and dedication to the products and brand sold through Lighthouse.

HOW DO PREMIUM DEALERS BENEFIT? A Premium dealer, featured on the Zodiac website, will benefit from a great variety of interesting dealer-only offers available solely through Lighthouse including special discount offers and increased sales support. Perhaps most importantly though, for every Zodiac item purchased through the Premium Scheme, members are credited with points into their online Premium account. The accumulated points, which have no cash value, can then be exchanged for a huge range of gifts and products supplied direct to their door. Unlike many well-known high-street reward schemes, the online accounts are simple to set up and easy to navigate. From paddleboards to iPads, the list of gifts is as diverse as it is long, ensuring there is something for everyone. On the ground, all Premium dealers are supplied with a full retail display kit which includes 2 x 1 metre specialised Zodiac display stands, merchandising goods and full access to Zodiac’s Dealer-Pro website. Alex Howells of Giles Leisure in Lewes has found the scheme to be a great way to boost business whilst passing benefits on to the company’s staff and said: “The Premium scheme offered by Zodiac has really incentivised staff to promote the Zodiac range of products. It was also a lot of fun choosing what to ‘spend’ our points on this

year. We’re looking forward to exceeding our points tally next year.”

THE STAR PRIZE Without doubt, the highlight of the points scheme is the impressive, bi-annual Zodiac Premium Trip, an incentive which is open to all dealers who accumulate sufficient points over a two-year period. Previous trips have taken place in such far flung exotic locations as Miami and Costa Rica. 2017’s destination, nestled away in the beautiful Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, was the 5-star Sublime Samana resort. This was the first year that UK participants took part on the trip and they weren’t disappointed. Indeed, a recent independent Telegraph travel review gave the resort an impressive 9/10 rating and Zodiac went all out to ensure that all its guests were treated to the very best it could offer. From zip-lines through local rainforests, to dining in exclusive beachside restaurants, the trip was expertly co-ordinated with an impressive number of activities and experiences on offer for the group to enjoy. To assist the group’s enjoyment of the break further, an English speaking tour guide was on hand all week to translate and ensure everyone was catered for. However, after a few rum punches it would be fair to say that the Brits were able to demonstrate some admirable ‘Franglais’ and ‘Spanglish’ and equally entertaining moves in the Batacha and Meregue dance class. Not all of the trip was quite so action packed, however, and there was a sufficient amount of time just to lie back and relax on the private beach, switch off from work and soak up the atmosphere. After all, what else

Dealers from around the world enjoying their Zodiac Premium trip in The Dominican Republic

are palm tree-laden beaches for other than to mooch about and take enviable selfies on? Speaking at the end of last year, Craig Trusson of Home Counties Pools & Hot tubs in Horsham provided positive feedback on his experiences of the scheme so far and his thoughts on his first international Zodiac trip: “Zodiac’s Premium scheme serves to provide us with a collection of exclusive and quality driven products enabling us to command a more beneficial sales margin return and the opportunity to participate in their rewards point scheme. We were delighted to have accumulated sufficient points this year to have been invited to join Zodiac’s European Dealer get-together in the Dominican Republic… An event, which served to provide an excellent opportunity to mix and network with pool and spa business owners from throughout Europe, whilst enjoying five star hospitality and some well-earned rest in the most beautiful of settings.” Every year eligible Premium dealers are allowed to cast a vote on where the next trip will take place – so to be in for a chance to take part, contact Lighthouse to get on board! TESTING FOR PHOSPHATES & SULPHATES

The Lesser Known Parameters In this edition, the testing experts at Lovibond Tintometer look at phosphates and Sulphates and explain the importance of testing for both

T

he UK has been quite strict on water purity for over 120 years and continues to set new standards in the market. Throughout this history, products have evolved to address new guidelines, legislation and best practice in the industry. For most pools, testing the parameters to achieve ‘Balanced Water’ (pH; total alkalinity; calcium hardness; total dissolved solids; and temperature) along with disinfectant levels constitute the most common tests. Now and again things do change in the industry which renders additional tests more important both for the commercial pool maintenance manager and the domestic pool tester. Early last year, a new EC Directive 80/778/EEC on the contents of lead in drinking water was introduced, encouraging water utility companies to add phosphates to water to inhibit resultant corrosion. The addition of phosphate to a potable water supply can significantly reduce lead and copper levels – helping us to meet these EU directives on drinking water standards.

BUT THERE HAS TO BE A ‘BUT’ The increase of phosphate levels in the UK water system spells bad news for pool owners. The immediate effect of this new Directive has already being noticed in swimming pools with increased outbreaks of algae – phosphates are, basically, fertilisers and increased levels: • Encourage algal growth • Affect pool appearance • Impact pool performance. Increased algae require an increased chlorine dosage which incurs increased costs, so testing for phosphate is becoming more and more important. Since additional phosphates in pool water have an effect on both the pool appearance and performance, it is essential that the levels are controlled and kept very low. Measuring phosphate levels can be carried out easily using phosphate tablets and then reading the results either on a comparator system or a photometer.

NOW FOR THE NEXT ‘BUT’ Care has to be taken, however, as a number of tablets used for other tests such as DPD

The increase of phosphate levels in the UK water system spells bad news for pool owners with increased outbreaks of algae already being noticed

WHAT IS THE SOURCE?

No1 also contain phosphates. Using a tube that has been used for chlorine testing, therefore, can result in a false positive reading, as the tablets pick up the residual phosphate that has adhered to the tube. So when testing for phosphates, follow these easy steps: • Always use a set of tubes specific for the test • Rinse tubes immediately after use with deionised water (some tap water contains phosphates) and drain dry • Occasionally rinse tubes with a weak acid (vinegar) to remove deposits

WHAT DO YOU DO IF PHOSPHATES ARE PRESENT? The easiest way is to follow the well-known saying ‘The Solution to Pollution is Dilution’ but, obviously, this does depend on there being no or little phosphate in the source water. There are also numerous phosphate removers available and these can be sourced from most pool chemical suppliers.

THE HUNGRY SULPHATES Increased sulphates in swimming pool water can eat away at grouting, thin layering, rendering, tiles and concrete. Utilising Sulphate-based chemicals increases this risk. Pool owners may initially notice a thin layer of white suspension in the pool – caused by distressed grout surfaces. The British Standard BS 5385 Part 4 ‘Code of Practice for Ceramic Tiling and Mosaics in Specific Conditions’ states that the sulphate

concentration should not exceed 300 ppm and, where this level cannot be achieved, alternative impermeable grouting materials should be used. The new PWTAG Swimming Pool Water guide recommends that sulphates are measured within the TDS figure at a level no higher than 360mg/l. However, please be aware that there are other factors that could give a high TDS reading so, if there is concern, specific Sulphate testing should be carried out – see below.

Sulphates do occur naturally in some source water. The build-up of sulphates, however, is normally the result of using some of the common pool chemicals such as aluminium sulphate (coagulant) and sodium bisulphate (to reduce pH).

A DANGEROUS CONSUMER One of the issues with sulphates is that a) they are not part of the Balanced Water analysis and b) more importantly, might be consuming the pool’s grout even if the Balanced Water results are correct. This may be the case even if the concentrations are actually below the recommendations. What makes this consumer even more dangerous is that the effects are not always immediately noticeable as any initial reactions will typically fill up pores and cracks. Regular testing, therefore, is the only way to avoid sulphate attacks. Testing can be carried out with a dual-tube Turbidity test, mini testers or via photometry. Again, according to PWTAG, tests should be done weekly at first. Once you are satisfied that the levels are stable, every month or so should suffice.

REDUCING SULPHATES When high sulphate is recorded, it is essential that the level is reduced as quickly as possible. Again, ‘The Solution to Pollution is Dilution’ so adding fresh water helps but this source water should first be tested for sulphate to confirm levels. Also consideration should be taken in the chemicals being used, if these are adding to the problem and if changes need to be made. Whichever the Lesser Known Parameter, keeping them checked and ‘in check’ is the only way to safeguard a pool and the investment in it. SHOW PREVIEW information as well as a new hospitality and visitor welcome area. Existing customers and new visitors are sure of a warm welcome and the opportunity to ‘get to grips’ with two of Heatstar’s new flagship climate control units – the new look ANDROMEDA EC, Heatstar’s perfect solution for residential pool dehumidification and the PHOENIX MP which enhances the heat recovery from expelled pool room air to over 95% offering highly effective climate control with minimal energy use. Both of these units will also be demonstrating Heatstar’s remote operational and energy monitoring system – the LYNX Energy Management System. The LYNX system has recently been changed and updated to ensure the system remains at the cutting edge of remote control and monitoring technology. This enables its users to access and monitor their Heatstar system over the internet from the other side of the world or the other side of the building. See them on stand E58

JOINT DEHUMIDIFICATION EXPERTISE WITH HUMIDITY SOLUTIONS AND HIDROS Humidity Solutions are excited to be exhibiting at SPATEX 2018 and are joined by their partners, HIdROS, specialists in the manufacture of refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers. This brings together the superb HIdROS equipment and the exceptional application knowledge held within Humidity Solutions. Water evaporation from swimming pools, leisure centres and spas can equate to hundreds of litres every hour. This evaporated water must be removed from the pool air or else the humidity levels will rapidly rise, resulting in heavy condensation which may lead to unpleasant air quality, deterioration of the décor and possibly even structural damage. The total range of HIdROS products includes standard dehumidifiers with capacities from 25 to 3,000 l/24h. In addition to this, Humidity Solutions and HIdROS can offer a wide range of tailor made machines to meet any customer requirement. Expertise, quality, flexibility and enthusiasm are the other essential elements brought by both companies

TRANSFORM YOUR POOL INTO A LIVING SPACE WITH LIFT’O Now available in the UK, Lift’O’s movable floors can be fitted on all types of pools – concrete, polyester shells, wood, panels and liners. They can be used in existing as well as future pools, as long as there are two right angles and a straight base. Most sloped bases are also possible. Lying at the bottom of a pool, the movable floor allows owners to transform their pool into a patio by simply pressing a button. Pool depth reduction is minimal as the thickness of Lift’O floor is only 15cm compared to 30 to 50cm for traditional floors and the surface can be finished with a material that matches the pool surround. Once the movable floor is in its raised position, access to the pool is impossible. To prevent loss or theft of the control unit, the device is attached to the wall, out of reach of children. To help you fully enjoy your new living area, the floor was designed to withstand a load

FIND WATER TESTING EXPERTISE ON THE LOVIBOND® STAND A New Year wouldn’t be the same without planning a visit to SPATEX and 2018 is no exception. This year, the Lovibond® Team is taking a relaxed approach to the event – not in our attitude, of course – but on their stand. So visitors should drop by for an informal chat about all things related to water testing: from taking the sample, through accurate analysis, to reporting the results. Perhaps a visitor can find a testing-related question finally to confound Lovibond’s Colin Day, FISPE. The most challenging questions will be entered for a prize and answers will be published post the event. The company will also be promoting their new Green Chemistry line of reagents. It has now proven possible to achieve what once seemed impossible: reagents that are easy to dose, that are safe, that have a long and stable shelf-life, that are extremely accurate, that provide reproducible results and that are environmentally friendly – endorsing competent and conservational water analysis, 100% free of boric acid. As experts in water analysis, the Lovibond® team is also presenting ‘An Overview of Water Testing through the Years’ on 31 January in the ISPE Workshop in Arena 1. See them on stand E16

The stand will include a functional Evolution overflow pool, whose minimalist overflow edge gives the impression of a continuous undisturbed area between the water level and the pool

F8 stone and porcelain items, such as natural stone and porcelain pool copings, deck level grilles, air grilles, inspection covers, lighting channels, seating and matching paving. The company is proud of a recent collaboration with John Scott of Aqualia, where Stoneworld successfully designed and created an innovative new deck level grille system for a fabulous pool and spa project. It enabled the required gradient to be created in the central section of the three part Moleanus limestone coping and grille by precision carving the vertical sides of the central part, allowing the three parts to slot easily together, vastly simplifying the laying process for the installers. Stoneworld believe this is the way forward and they invite visitors to come and discuss this innovation or any project needs. See them on stand F16

POOL CLEANERS

Keeping It Clean In 2018 Innovative manual and in particular robotic cleaners have ensured that the monotonous but essential task of cleaning the surfaces within a wide variety of swimming pools is thankfully no longer the chore it once was. And as each year passes, the introduction of new and updated models ensure it’s a job that is becoming even easier to perform. With a new year ahead, we look at 10 models to keep pools clean in 2018 By Andrea Hartshorne POOL BLASTER MAX FROM GOLDEN COAST Where lower budget cleaners are necessary, Golden Coast has a wide range of options available through Watertech,

including its Pool Blaster range of cleaners. With its high-flow pump and industryleading suction, the cordless Pool Blaster Max gives owners the extra power they need for reliable deep cleaning. It’s been designed to tackle the largest messes with ease and is equipped with a high-capacity filter bag that holds more dirt and debris than others in its class… and it’s easy to empty, too. The Pool Blaster Max with 240V adapter is equipped with Smart Charger technology and takes just four hours to recharge. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

PENTAIR BLUEREBEL™ FROM SCP UK The BlueRebel™ Suction-side in-ground pool cleaner packs amazing performance into a compact, easy-to-use package whch users can just set and forget. Its pre-programmed steering and two-wheel configuration allows the BlueRebel™ to turn on a dime and access hard-to-reach sand and debris. Its efficient design provides excellent mobility and cleaning even at low flow rates, making it a great choice for use with variable speed pumps. Exceptional turbine design allows dirt and debris to pass easily through the unit and it excels on all surfaces. It performs on all angles too, including 90° walls, right up to the water line. Its efficiency is also formidable, providing suction cleaning from 6 m³/h. SCP UK 01293 813215 www.scpeurope.com

THE ‘BIG YELLOW ONE’ FROM FAIRLOCKS Fairlocks, have been selling one of the most reliable and functional swimming pool vacuum heads for decades. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is their philosophy with this particular product, and the demand for it, which they affectionately call the ‘Big Yellow One’ has been high for many years. The streamlined shape facilitates fast and effective cleaning whilst the centrally mounted 19” brush enables the vac-head to collect even the solid debris that would normally be left behind by less capable systems. The clever design and centralised weight over the brushes makes it perfectly practical for use in any pool finish from concrete tiled to liner. For ease of installation there is the option of 1½ or 2’ hose fittings. Fairlocks Pool Products 01865 988346 www.fairlocks.co.uk

HAYWARD TIGERSHARK QC FROM BOSTA UK In 2017, Bosta UK extended its pool cleaner range to include the Tigershark QC model. As with the standard Tigershark model, the efficient cleaning pattern that is followed covers the entire pool – including the floor and walls, all the way to the tile line and with a 17 metre cable, it’s suitable for almost all domestic pools. Where the QC model differs from the standard Tigershark is it offers a faster clean cycle which ensures a pool is cleaned in just 1 hour 30 minutes. Both models are easy to use with no installation and no attachments required and there’s also a choice of foam rollers or PVC brushes depending on the finish of the pool. HOT TUBS

2018 Hot Tubs – The New Season With demand across both domestic and increasingly commercial markets showing no signs of slowing down, manufacturers and distributors are keen to ensure the New Year brings new opportunities. Expect new brands, new models, more innovative technology, great warranties and keen pricing to all play a role in ensuring continued success in the year ahead and we roundup the latest from this buoyant sector By Jon Wadeson

t seems there’s no stopping the hot tub market in the UK as consumers continue to embrace them with open arms as part of a wider lifestyle choice. The signs are that the next 12 months could be equally as strong for the industry too! With a number of brands enhancing existing models as well as adding new ranges to their offering, plus some new brands vying for business in 2018, competition between companies will be as tough as ever this year and this issue, we take a closer look at what’s on offer for the season ahead.

SPA CREST EUROPE INTRODUCES NEW TUFF SPAS MODELS FOR 2018 2018 sees the introduction of two new models to the Tuff Spas range from Spa Crest Europe, the exclusive importers and distributors in the UK. Tuff Spas, manufactured in Arizona, USA, are the world’s largest producer of roto-moulded hot tubs and pioneers of the technology. The two new models are ‘Platinum’ versions of the existing popular TT450 and TT650 units; the 450 being a seven person all-seater model and the 650 seating five people in a lounger layout, and both units being 1.96m x 1.96m (77” x 77”) square.

The Platinum models feature more than double the jet-count of their standard specification counterparts, with an additional 4hp therapy pump in each to power them, delivering full body therapy focusing on all muscle trigger points. Platinum hot tubs also include up-rated filtration and heaters, as well as the normally optional multi-coloured ‘Stack Stone’ side panel decoration, to give the hot tub cladding a drystone wall type effect. As with all Tuff Spas products brought in by Spa Crest Europe, the models also feature their unique Tuff Top integral hard cover and cover lifter (which doubles as a handy shelf or table when the spa is in use), exclusive removable Blue sTUFF insulation for easier maintenance access, solid bottom to keep rodents out and heat in, large side access panels for easy access to all plumbing, varied depth seating to cater for all heights and sizes, LED multicoloured lighting system, and uniquely in the market, a lifetime warranty on the hot tub’s shell and structure.

AQUA WAREHOUSE GROUP WELCOME THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOT TUBS Maax Spas Corporation have been producing spas since 1969 and are the third largest manufacturer of hot tubs in the world and the largest in the US. With its five established brands, Maax were very comfortable, if not conservative in their thinking. However things changed in January 2017 when Maax Corp were bought by the American Bath Group who had a different vision for the future and they instantly looked at the need for keeping five brands and 105 different models. Drastically reducing the model range, minimising the components used and standardising the production line made more sense than existing arrangements. So the decision was made to take the best from four of their existing brands, including L.A. Spas and Maax Spas, and to merge them into one, creating the super brand – American Whirlpool. The new line-up includes 24 2018 sees the launch of the American Whirlpool brand which features 24 popular models including this, the 890

best selling models which are built by craftsman using quality parts, innovative processes, and which are backed by an industry leading warranty. The new American Whirlpool range utilises current ‘Dr. Designed’ hydrotherapy seating, steel frame construction and innovative Northern Exposure insulation system combined with improved visual appeal, ergonomic controls and proprietary topside controls. With new cascade jets, redesigned textured pillows, illuminated coasters with the brand icon, branded footwell, stainless steel branding on the filter housing and the new status icon on the cabinet, American Whirlpool is set to make a major splash in the UK market. UK distributor Aqua Warehouse Group, see this change as a win win scenario. “The American Whirlpool brand is massive and the introduction has many positives for us and especially for our main brand Vita Spas,” said Managing Director, Richard Hart. “The factory was always slow with PR and Marketing, which is understandable with five different brands. Well now with only two brands to focus on, it’s easier and we are already seeing the benefits.”

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS

Treating Water For Optimum Results Providing a clean and safe water experience is a must for any pool or spa owner, and whilst traditional methods of water treatment are still routinely used, newer technologies have gained in popularity. UV is a great example, but looking beyond it, there’s also numerous other products and systems available which tick all the necessary water treatment boxes. With options suitable for a variety of settings, we highlight just some of the alternatives By Karen Witney

very pool owner and operator desires healthy clear water that looks great and is pleasant to bathe in. When you consider that each swimmer adds many thousands of microorganisms to the water that already contains a good supply of its own, effective water treatment is essential and has to be present constantly. There are many methods of water treatments available today and whilst those tried and tested still have a strong placement in the field, consumers are becoming more accepting of less well-known systems. One thing that is guaranteed in the introduction of these excellent bacteria barriers is that bathers can wave goodbye to red eyes, itchy skin and other nasty side effects of poorly treated pool and spa water.

exceptionally clear water without adding any sanitising chemicals as it combines the powerful natural clarifying properties of the product’s own unique mineral blend with an exceptionally fine filtration system. Overall, the system combines three unique components for a healthy, balanced and environmentally friendly mineral-enriched swimming pool. These are:

MAGNAPOOL™ – AN EXCLUSIVE FROM LIGHTHOUSE Magnesium is one of the essential minerals required for our bodies to function properly. It is found in seawater as well as the human body and all living tissues. In particular, we know that magnesium is beneficial for soothing pain, caring for the skin or easing muscular problems and the relaxing virtues of magnesiumenriched baths have been recognised for many years. MagnaPool™ from Zodiac is an exclusive magnesium-based water treatment system for swimming pools. The selfcontained system is easy to use and provides

Zodiac’s MagnaPool™ system from Lighthouse provides natural purification properties in all pools

• Zodiac Patented MagnaPool™ minerals – which dissolve in the pool water. • Zodiac Crystal Clear – glass crystals filter medium which provides ultra-fine filtration. • Zodiac Hydroxinator – an exclusive water treatment unit that purifies water automatically by hydroxination. The MagnaPool™ system provides effective and stable disinfection. When the swimming pool water is treated manually, the concentration of chlorine varies between each addition. This generates fluctuations that can adversely affect treatment effectiveness and bathing comfort. With MagnaPool™, the natural purifying properties generated by the Hydroxinator act gently and constantly, without the saw-tooth effect. The result – continuously disinfected and healthy water that is perfectly balanced. Lighthouse’s Daniel Philips said: “Having launched in Europe in 2015, there continues to be a great buzz from MagnaPool™ retailers who are seeing the benefits, both commercially and their customers’ experiences from this unique water treatment system. The positive feedback and results from in-house tests, gives Lighthouse the confidence that it will soon become the number one choice for pool owners looking to replace manufactured chemicals with a natural, therapeutic bathing experience.”

RAPIDLY EXPANDING O-CARE REDUCES CHEMICAL CONSUMPTION Since O-Care launched their spa cleaning products in the UK in late 2015, the company has been taking the market by storm. O-Care removes and prevents biofilm whilst constantly cleaning the spa meaning less chemicals are needed. Using O-Care can reduce the amount of chlorine or bromine used by up to

78% therefore it’s safe and it helps protects the main components in a spa or hot tub. Made from a mixture of high quality minerals, it makes the water more natural, is odourless and leaves the skin of the spa user in a soft condition. It also negates the need to shower after bathing, which is important when using chemical water treatments alone. The company started back in 2009 as a small brand in the Netherlands but that changed when the decision was made to introduce their products to different international markets. An effective water maintenance product in conjunction with creative marketing and a smart sales concept has helped O-Care rapidly expand. Even-though the O-Care concept is being adapted and integrated in many different countries Roel Fassbender, the CEO of O-Care Spa Water Care, believes that growth needs to be sustainable and not a goal in itself. To support the brand name, O-Care provides free tools for both retailers and consumers such as a water maintenance app, animations and training programmes to name just a few. “We focus on both the retailer and the consumer in every aspect,” said Roel. “Customer loyalty is key and with the various O-Care tools we aim to help our retailers excel at that.”

GAFFEY HYPROLYSER CREATES A LOW HAZARD PLANT ROOM With the recent introduction of Hyprolyser iSEC® electrochlorination systems for smaller commercial pools, Gaffey are now able to promote the benefits of a ‘low hazard plant room’ to all types of commercial swimming pools. Whilst great water quality and efficient chlorination are prerequisites for any pool operator, these requirements are only part of the picture when considering an equipment upgrade or new-build pool. In smaller commercial/ hotel pools where technical staff are often in shorter supply, choosing a disinfection system which eliminates the need for the handling and storage of hazardous chemicals is an attractive proposition, in addition to a significant reduction The Hyprolyser iSEC® from Gaffey is the solution for smaller commercial pools to ensure low hazard plant rooms

in COSHH management tasks. Andrew Gaffey, Technical Director, commented: “We know that the majority of chemical spillages or chlorine gas incidents occurring in pool facilities happen when hazardous chemicals are being transferred, prepared into solution, or when the cleaning or maintenance of chemical injection points is undertaken. If these tasks and hazards can be avoided altogether then the chances of accidents and injuries occurring through operator error are greatly reduced.” Hyprolyser® iSEC models produce a dilute sodium hypochlorite solution, safely generated on-site using only salt, water and electrical energy. The hypochlorite solution produced contains less than 1% active chlorine, below the threshold for classification as a dangerous substance. As this solution can be produced freshly on demand every day, there is no need for large quantities of chlorine to be stored on site. The added benefit of on-site production means that the generated solution is always fresh and does not degrade in storage like commercially produced sodium hypochlorite. Manufactured by Gaffey at their factory in Lancashire, Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems are now available in capacities from 30g/h to 8.5kg/h of chlorine. Well proven in delivering a safe and economical alternative to commercial chlorine chemicals, they are used in swimming pools around the world.

LO-CHLOR’S PHOSPHATE PROTECTION PROGRAMME REDUCES RUNNING COSTS! Phosphate is the major food source for algae growth in swimming pools and whilst chlorine and algaecides kill or prevent algae, they do not remove unwanted phosphate from the water. As algae dies it releases phosphate and unless it is removed, it remains as a food

source for new algae growth. The Lo-Chlor Phosphate Protection Programme is key to keeping pools algae free, maintaining maximum water quality and allowing other chemicals to work at their most effective level. Expertise in this area has ensured that the Lo-Chlor Starver® range of products are the phosphate removers of choice across Europe. Lo-Chlor Starver® X is a curative product for high phosphate levels and should be used when the level of phosphate is 2,000ppb or above. This unique concentrated product is the initial shock treatment for pools. Each 1 litre dose will remove up to 6,000ppb per 50,000 litres of water. Once shocked lower phosphate levels can be effectively managed using Lo-Chlor Starver®. Lo-Chlor Starver® is a preventative product and should be used on an ongoing basis to keep the phosphate level as close to zero as possible. This patented product is designed for weekly use once the level is below 2,000ppb. Current market conditions indicate rising prices of chlorine sanitisers, linked with shortening of supply. By removing phosphate and eliminating algae the demand for chlorine as a sanitiser is reduced, therefore, lowering chorine consumption and reducing costs. Manufactured in the UK Lo-Chlor Chemicals are a global leader in phosphate removal and control. The Starver® range

is sold in over 50 countries for use in the domestic pool market and the product’s unique properties are now proven in removing phosphate in natural swimming pools, aquaria, ponds, fountains, and the commercial pool market.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF WATER TREATMENT FROM CERTIKIN Certikin say that the Prozone Eco Master® is the next generation in pool and spa water treatment. The Eco Master® combines state-of-the-art, germicidal UV with Ozone and Advanced Oxidation Processing to deliver the most powerful non-chemical, non-chlorine, non-mineral oxidation and purification available for pools. It achieves clean and healthy water and at the same time reduces the need for harsh chemicals. The Eco Master®’s patented hybrid technology is light years ahead of traditional UV or Ozone and works by creating eco-friendly Ozone and Hydroxyl radicals inside the product. Water then enters the unit and a static mixer combines all three in a scrambled flow . The water is irradiated by Germicidal UV-C, converting O3 to Hydroxyl Radicals and Peroxides through Advanced Oxidation Processing. These then destroy any contaminants, adding ORP and residual sanitation to the water. The resultant treated water is as clean as pure drinking water and healthy too with no harmful by-products. Featuring an all in one design for

EDINBURGH POOL ENJOYS BENEFITS OF HYPROLYSER

The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, Scotland includes a three pool system and behind the scenes sits a Hyprolyser 1100 electrochlorination system from Gaffey. The water quality in the pool regularly receives comments from both customers and competitors alike but it was the time the system saved over the pool’s previous equipment which really impressed Paul Whiteside, Pool Water & RCP Technical Manager who gave a glowing reference to Gaffey by saying: “The system is a pool plant operator’s dream as it requires virtually no input other than adding salt and performing a weekly test to ensure the system is working at its optimum, compare this to the three hours of cleaning in full

boiler suit and respirator every week from our previous system. The health and safety benefits of the Hyprolyser system are obvious and the operational cost of running the system are as you predicted and are slightly less than our old system but come without the manhours and maintenance of the previous system.” The chlorine solution produced by a Hyprolyser® electrochlorination system is below the 1% hazardous threshold, eliminating the regular auditing and management tasks that COSHH regulations would otherwise demand. Due to the low caustic and mineral content of the generated solution, injection point cleaning and descaling tasks are completely eliminated.

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS water using UV activated Nano Crystals. The photocatalytic reaction taking place is the most powerful steriliser available, while the unit also splits water molecules creating highly mobile hydroxyl radicals. The photocatalytic reaction and hydroxyl radicals eliminate harmful waterborne organisms, bacteria and pathogens, and is the only technology that is able to break down organic matter such as urea, biofilm and suntan oils. The ceramic crystal catalyst of the Quantum system is the same technology used globally by waste water authorities to convert sewage into potable water. Unlike UV treatment alone, which alters the DNA of pollutants to prevent reproduction, the Quantum actually kills bacteria, viruses and microorganisms. The process is likened to the catalytic converter fitted to the exhaust system of cars, whereby the heat of the engine activates a platinum catalyst and converts poisonous waste from combustion gases into water and carbon dioxide molecules. Both the Quantum and car exhaust catalytic reactors are extraordinarily powerful and fast acting. The advanitage of the reaction being contained within Quantum’s ceramic catalyst chamber is that no by-products are released into the pool. This is important for the safety of swimmers against alternative treatments such as ozone – which lingers on the water surface and is essentially a gas that has been linked to severe respiratory conditions. Case studies on the Quantum have highlighted an average 74% saving in chemical consumption. Balanced with the Quantum costing no more to run than a light bulb, and the only consumable parts to consider are UV lamps, this proves to be a wise investment. The ceramic catalyst is several times harder than glass and will never be consumed by the reaction, expected to long outlive the three year manufacturer’s warranty. Recent consumer testimonials have all reported a visible improvement in water clarity when using the Quantum, often described as ‘sparkling water’.

TRIOGEN® – A GLOBAL BRAND FOR OVER 30 YEARS Suez Purification & Disinfection Systems have been designing, manufacturing and supplying globally UV, Ozone and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) equipment for over 30 years from their factory in Scotland under the brand name triogen®. The Ozone offering in the wet leisure

and particularly swimming pool market has been developed and refined over this period to generate and inject Ozone safely under vacuum to ensure the process is intrinsically safe. Ozone is recognised in the new Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) publication ‘Swimming Pool Water’ as complementary to chlorination. Ozone is a gaseous molecule under ambient conditions and is used as a disinfectant, oxidant and flocculant in pool waters providing excellent water quality, bather protection and comfort plus it enhances air quality which helps to ensure the longevity of construction and building fabric materials. Ozone is a secondary disinfectant to the chlorine based biocide which is normally used. It is particularly effective against the chlorine resistant Cryptosporidium and Giardia microorganisms. It oxidises chloramines and trihalomethanes (THMs) improving pool water and building air quality, safety and comfort. Less well known is the ability of ozone to aid flocculation of colloidal particles, improving filter performance and hence pool water quality. The pool water can truly be described as crystal clear. The above benefits also contribute to allowing the pool to be operated at a lower than usual free chlorine level, reducing chemical costs. Ozone can be applied to either the full

UV SYSTEMS

Ultra Effective Ultra Violet

When it comes to the effective treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, UV Systems are now an established choice, particularly in commercial settings. Their success is no real surprise when you consider UV’s many benefits, but their big selling point is a large reduction in the use of chlorine as a sanitiser. As more pools make the switch to UV, there’s plenty of product choices to consider and we take a look at the options By Jon Wadeson

T

he benefits of using UV for water treatment have been known for a long time, however its mainstream use has really only happened over the last couple of decades. The systems work by utilising radiation from UV lamps to inactivate the cells of undesirable organisms contained within swimming pool or spa water by altering the DNA of these harmful bacteria, micro organisms and pathogens. The result is cleaner water and a greatly reduced need for chemical treatment. Combined chlorine levels are also greatly reduced meaning a healthier setting for swimmers and the environment that surrounds the pool too. The effectiveness of UV systems combined with straight-forward operation has meant that UV has been widely accepted as one of the most effective choices for water treatment. Further improvements have been made over recent years but manufacturers are far from finished when it comes to product developments and many are still improving the functionality of the systems that are on offer. With an increasing number of solutions available targeting a wide section of the UK’s wet leisure sector, in this issue we focus on just some of the ultra effective products that are cleansing water with the power of UV.

ATG’S ‘WAFER’ UV SOLUTION OFFERS AN ULTRA-COMPACT FOOTPRINT After recent events in the UK drinking water industry surrounding chlorine resistant bacteria outbreaks, in particular the dangerous waterborne parasite Cryptosporidium, public awareness on water quality and its relation to safety has never been higher. The rise of the luxury swimming pool market and the growth in private leisure centres has seen the demand on operators to provide high quality water and bathing environments become a major priority. One solution to this challenge for operators

is atg UV Technology’s WF range. Known as the ‘Wafer’ due to its ultra-compact footprint, is the most compact UV system available in the aquatics market today. At around a third of the size of comparative UV systems, with significantly reduced maintenance space and improved performance, it offers easy to install and retrofit solutions that will fit the tightest of plant rooms. As an inline system, the WF range installs directly into the pipe, reducing the need for additional pipework or support structures and is one of the easiest UV systems on the market to install. With an ultra slim design, comes a significant reduction in weight without compromising on design. Features include TwistlokTM ‘plug and play’ lamps and quick release quartz. Whist the WF range is designed to be the most compact system on the market, its hydraulically optimised design and leading polychromatic lamp technology will also make it one of the most efficient and best performing. As a minimum, the WF range will provide a 99.9% reduction of chlorine resistant microorganisms, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

PURIQ PROVIDES CLEAN, CLEAR AND SAFE SWIMMING POOL WATER The development and increased use of UV within swimming pool maintenance has changed the way the water within pools can be managed. UV SYSTEMS exactly 253.7 nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. This results in optimal purification, so the use of chlorine and other chemicals can be reduced by up to 80%! The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation whilst also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. The PURIQ UV-C water purifier contains intelligent electronics that alert owners when it’s time to replace the lamp. This ensures that the unit is always operating at peak efficiency, owners always have a perfectly working device which they can rely on and their water is kept crystal clear. The system is easy to install and can be supplied quickly and easily to all types of swimming pool customers. In short, the PURIQ UV-C system provides a safe, eco-friendly answer to reduce the number of chemicals and chlorine that are used in more traditional methods of water sanitisation – what more could owners need from a swimming pool water treatment system?

AN EFFECTIVE DOMESTIC SOLUTION – CERTIKIN’S UV CLARIFIER RANGE Introduced in 2015, Certikin’s CUV clarifier range for domestic use consists of six models. Each has been designed to optimise flow

rates and improve energy efficiency, with the sole focus to deliver optimum performance at all times to clarify swimming pool water. They come with high output UV bulbs powered by energy efficient ballast, all housed within a watertight, robust housing that is fused with thermal overload protection. Made from HDPE for its highly reflective properties, each unit is fully UV stabilised and a tough outer casing has translucent ends that glow when the UV is operational. Models in the CUV range are fully compatible with salt water chlorine generators, allowing for a lower level of chlorine to be used whilst still enjoying completely safe swimming pool water. The models in the range cover pools between 15,000 (15m3) and 110,000 (110m3) litres and for larger pools or higher flow situations, multiple units can be used together. Every CUV is simple to install and is supplied with pre-fitted stainless steel mounting brackets that allows fixing of the unit horizontally or vertically. All units are supplied with 1.5” male threaded unions and flexible hose connectors (metric fittings cable supplied upon request). Over time, the effectiveness of UV bulbs

diminishes therefore they will need to be replaced periodically. CUV bulbs will last for 9,000 hours or two years (assuming that the pool filtration system is operational for 24 hours a day for 6 months of the year).

HANOVIA SWIMLINE UVEO PROMISES REDUCED RUNNING COSTS Available in a range of sizes, Hanovia’s SwimLine Ultraviolet Energy Optimised (UVEO) system delivers a guaranteed, consistent UV dose with maximum efficiency for swimming pool operators. Designed using Hanovia’s 90 years of experience in UV treatment, the SwimLine UVEO takes advantage of an optimised hydraulic design to provide up to 60% improvement in the treatment capacity over conventional UV systems. This means reduced running costs for 24/7 applications such as swimming pools without compromising on biosecurity or chloramine control. A prime benefit is that treatment is performed with just a single UV lamp, eliminating the need to install a bigger system with multiple lamps. This saves on upfront capital costs and lifetime spares costs. The system also utilises an electronic

HANOVIA UV SYSTEMS KEEP SPRING WATER PURE

Nirvana Spa in Berkshire is one of the UK’s most prestigious spa facilities, frequented by elite athletes and celebrities. The facility has a reputation for using crystal clear natural mineral water drawn from the same pristine source 700 feet beneath the spa. To maintain the purity of the water within each of its nine pools, the spa is using the latest UV disinfection systems from Hanovia Ltd. The broad range of pools includes Roman and surf rooms, a plunge pool, fitness pool, outside pool and hydrotherapy pool. Each has a specifically-sized Hanovia UV system installed to treat the water, ensuring the high level of quality and disinfection required. “UV disinfection systems allow us to run the chlorine at the right levels and there is no way we would be able to achieve the level of water purity without them. As the water temperature is kept at a constant 35°C, which is higher than in leisure pools, there is an increased risk of infection from microorganisms such as bacteria and moulds which thrive in warm water,” commented Neil Phelps, Nirvana’s Maintenance Manager. Each Hanovia UV system installed at Nirvana Spa consists of a stainless steel chamber containing a medium pressure UV lamp housed in a special quartz sleeve to protect it from the pool water. The chambers are carefully designed by Hanovia engineers using advanced flow calculation methods. This ensures maximum performance by making sure all the water flowing through the chambers receives the correct UV dose.

UV SYSTEMS lamp(s) is wiped along with the thimble(s). The control panel is manufactured as a minimum IP 54, polyester coated mild steel in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 QMS and is CE approved. The medium pressure lamps can be driven by an energy efficient electronic power supply to allow variable power adjustment to the lamp providing precise dose control, minimising power use and extending lamp life. A BMS Ethernet option is also available. The installation from new or retrofitting of a triogen UV CF unit will improve water quality, bather comfort, safety plus reduce chemical usage. In addition it will improve air quality for bathers and spectators alike and ensure longevity of the building fabric.

ballast with ‘stepless’ power control, automatically adjusting power to continuously match pool operating conditions. The SwimLine UVEO is optimised specifically for pool bio-safety and ensures chlorine-resistant organisms, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, are controlled with the optimum UV dose and the product is compliant with both local country standards and the emerging US Model Aquatic Health Code requirements. The optimised medium pressure UV lamp continues to provide the excellent chloramine reduction for which Hanovia’s traditional pool products are renowned. Controlling chloramines delivers high quality pool water, reduced corrosion of metal structures and a healthier environment for bathers. The system comes with Hanovia’s patented ‘UVGuard’, which allows safe checking of the UV sensor (performance monitoring instrument) using a unique ‘eyelid shutter’ design, which protects the operator from exposure to UV light.

dose of 60mJ/cm2 at a water quality (UV Transmission) of a minimum of 94%. The UV lamp technology is medium pressure which provides a continuum of spectral output ensuring both disinfection and chloramine control. The alternative UV technology, which is low pressure, only provides disinfection. There are two main components of a triogen UV CF system, the vessel or reaction chamber and the control panel. The UV vessel, which is termed ‘cross flow’, is manufactured from corrosion resistant electropolished 316L stainless steel or titanium. In addition to the lamp and thimble (sleeve) the vessel should include a complete wiper mechanism, UV sensor, temperature sensor, vent and drain. Ideally the wiper should be automatic but an optional CF-LT has a manual wiper. The UV sensor, which measures the output of the

New Triogen service kits from Golden Coast are helping contractors keep UV units performing their best: year in, year out. A choice of one and two-year service kits, containing commonly replaced components, is now available through Golden Coast. The two-year kit, for example, comprises: a replacement quartz lamp, quartz tube ‘O’ ring and filter mat. Jamie Adams, Golden Coast’s Managing Director explained: “Triogen’s UV units are built to a high specification. They’re robust, resistant against corrosion and come with an 18-month lamp life. “And their performance is exceptional, as is their value for money. That’s why they make such a good investment for owners. “That’s why it’s important to adopt a proactive maintenance approach. It ensures your customers benefit from on-going, costeffective UV disinfection while adding to your profits.”

The triogen UV CF range from Suez is a medium pressure solution which provides both disinfection and chloramine control

POOL & SPA PUMPS

Prime Products To Keep The Water Moving Found at the heart of every plant room, pool and spa pumps keep the water moving and are an essential component in any efficient system. These powerful products have improved over recent years and the latest variable speed options have for many, become the pump of choice for many applications. With the choices now wider than ever, in this issue we highlight some of the best models that are available By Andrea Hartshorne

T

he pool and spa pumps that are available to today’s market offer virtually maintenance-free operation but that fact glosses over the important role that they play in the plant room. These hard-working background systems are essential pieces of kit on any domestic and commercial pool or spa operation and recent technological advances mean that the systems continue to improve and become more energy-efficient. Whether used by a domestic pool, destination spa or leisure centre, these unassuming products are impossible to operate without and as they quietly go about the business of circulating water and play a large role in a pool or spa working to their best ability. With models on offer for a range of budgets and applications, we take a closer look at some of the products available this year.

Drip-proof electric motor, IP 54 protection, class F; Possibility of connecting the pump by means of Ø50 or Ø63mm socket unions. The Kripsol pumps are suitable for a variety of swimming pool water types, including salt water and offer peace of mind when it comes to keeping water flowing freely through the pool system. The improvements in these pumps including speed, engineering and materials have improved so much over the past 5-10 years and energy efficiency is key. The pumps, once installed, are quiet, with optimised hydraulics, easy installation, hard-wearing high tolerance materials, and a low energy consumption. For over 25 years, the pumps and the engineering behind the pumps, have been tested, innovated and developed to ensure efficiencies and hard-wearing technologies are the key to development.

A NEW GENERATION OF PUMPS FROM HERBORNER At last year’s aquanale trade fair in Germany, pump manufacturer Herborner Pumpentechnik introduced their new generation of pumps to the public for the first time. The combination of an energy-efficient motor and smooth-coated pump hydraulics, the built-in frequency converter and the maximum impeller diameter demonstrate the complete efficiency of the new generation of pumps, which use a speed controller to regulate the available power of the motor within a typical working range. For the operator, this new series means lower life cycle costs thanks to the best possible energy efficiency and quality. As a result, this innovation creates a resource-

saving product that reduces CO2 emissions in the long term. That makes the herborner.max one of the most sustainable products in the pump industry. In addition to the new generation of pumps, the company introduced its new pump selection software, PAHN AI, at the trade fair. This web-based software now allows simpler, intelligent pump selection through the company’s redesigned website. The new herborner.max pumps are tailored to the specific application in each case. The herborner.Fmax can be used flexibly as a block pump, which makes it ideal for the complex world of plant engineering. The herborner.Xmax is ideal for use as a circulating pump, with its built-in hair and fibre filter. The portfolio is rounded out by the inline block pump, herborner.Dmax, which can be installed directly in pipelines. And of course the WATERblue-B is also available in the ‘maximised’ design, as WATERblue-Bmax.

OPINION

Mirror. Signal. Manoeuvre. “I think that, for businesses, individuals or indeed our entire industry, it’s important to know where we have been in order to plan where we are going,” says Jamie Adams, Managing Diretor at Golden Coast

W

hen John Dawes contacted me at the end of last year, you really could have knocked me down with a feather. Not only was he talking about a recent article he’d read about the Wet Leisure Survey, which I’d published on LinkedIn, but here was a man who is a part of the very fabric of the industry, offering me a record of his life’s work. An archive of eight boxes containing 100 kilos of books, articles, technical papers and data sheets. And it made me think just how important the history of our industry should be to all of us.

A POSTCARD FROM BRIGHTON It’s SPATEX time of year again and this will be the fourth year at the Ricoh Arena and it already feels like that is the natural venue for the show to be held. The idea of having a wet leisure industry show in, say, Brighton seems frankly a little strange. But it was really only yesterday when we would all pack our buckets and spades and head off to the seaside. And yet, things have changed. The industry wanted a better venue that offered easier access and set up for exhibitors and visitors. They wanted that venue to be in a more central location and falling exhibitor numbers made it pretty clear just how much they wanted that. The industry voted with its feet. There was something else as well. Our industry was changing and it no longer really suited Brighton. We were moving away from kiss-me-quick hats and rainbow striped lilos. Coventry was the future and the future was glossier, more technologically advanced and more environmentally aware. You know, in the way that futures are meant to be.

So when you stand in the middle of the Ericsson Exhibition Hall this year, take a moment to think back and then you too can feel pleased with how far we have come.

A PIE CHART FROM BARNSTAPLE Of course it’s all very well having a ‘feeling’ about how much our industry has changed and in what ways, but some of us like hard facts. Some of us like data! This will be the seventh year of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey and, as usual, the report and analysis will be published and made freely available to everyone who attends SPATEX. (It’s also available to download from goldenc.com or view online at wetleisure. com) The report runs to about four thousand words and has plenty of graphs, charts and tables. The purpose behind it, and the reason we get the full support of the BSPF in promoting it every year, is to inform business owners in our industry of market trends and to give them the knowledge that they need to make better business planning decisions. It’s also starting to become a detailed history of the wet leisure industry here in the UK. The differences between one year and the next may be relatively minor but when you look back over several years it is clear to see how our industry has developed and grown.

A CLEAR INDICATOR It’s only by looking back, and having archives and memories and surveys to look back on, that proper trends can be identified. As one famous statistician once said, ‘One data point doesn’t make a trend’. But there are trends that can be clearly seen and they show us, they signal, where

our industry is headed. We will become more environmentally aware and we will offer our customers ways to use less energy and produce less pollution. We will take away our customers need to maintain their own pools by offering service contracts or by installing automated control systems and we will use social media to advertise all this. These, and other trends that we can now clearly see, would have sounded like science fiction if they had been talked about in Brighton all those years ago but the thing about change is that, in business, it is the only constant.

MOVING FORWARD… We’ve just entered a new year and, hard Brexit, soft Brexit or what Brexit, the UK is soon going to have a new place in the world’s trade structure. The future is full of possibilities and the future is full of uncertainty but it’s a future I have a lot of confidence in. If you look at just how many innovative new products have been brought to market in recent years. If you look at how we have embraced the changes in people’s attitudes to health and wellbeing and responded to them. If you look at just how far we have moved with the times. If you look at all that, you are looking at an industry that we can all be proud, and confident, to be a part of. And John’s 100 kilos of books? That archive is being catalogued by Golden Coast and we hope to be able to host much of it on wetleisure.com so that it becomes a resource we all share.
