Despite what’s been at best, a very mediocre start to the year weather wise, it seems there’s no let up in interest for the products and services our Industry provides. From speaking with friends and colleagues spanning the full spectrum of wet leisure, all seem to be flat out. Looking back 12 months, it was the same story although last year the early weather was good but summer never really got going, so fingers crossed that this year the best is still to come!

One thing that is clearly different 12 months on is the build up to the big ‘in or out’ decision of the EU Referendum – it actually now seems impossible to avoid – and it is, in my opinion, having an effect on business. Uncertainty is never good and when coupled with the negativity from both sides, well, let’s just say I’ll be glad when votes are counted and the result announced.

At the moment, it seems too close to call, with polls changing from one week to the next. Whether the UK’s in or out of the EU, change happens and for me, it’s more often than not for the better and should therefore be embraced. After 23 June, one thing that is for sure is that the world will keep on turning regardless of the result and a successful business will always innovate and adapt to survive and ultimately prosper.

In this issue, we feature swim spas – a great example of how things do change.

After all it wasn’t that long ago that as a sector they didn’t even exist, but it seems there’s no stopping their rise in popularity now and manufacturers are reporting impressive growth figures. We also look at the budget end of the hot tub and spa market, products which are aimed at those that are new to idea of ownership and that fall below the £5,000 mark. On the pools side, we also take a look at what are arguably the rivals to both hot tubs and swim spas – above-ground and wooden pools. We also examine the lighting options that are enhancing features both in and around pools, features such as magnificent tiles and mosaics, which are also covered in this issue. With the season now underway, thoughts are also turning to what is always a busy exhibitions schedule and we roundup what’s on and where in the months ahead.

Having already touched on the subject above, in this edition, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his opinion on the Brexit question, the EU and our ties with the global economy, while David Walker, RoSPA’s Leisure Safety Manager and Jon Glenn, Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA give an update on the UK’s Drowning Prevention Strategy.

There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus information from the STA concerning water balance – get it wrong and it can cause serious damage not only financially, but to a company’s reputation too!

New Leisure Facilities For Hammersmith School Latymer Upper School is an independent, co-educational day school taking children from the age of 7 years old through to 18 years.

Located in Hammersmith, the school was established in 1624 and has occupied its present site since 1890. In 1950, the A4 Great West Road was constructed bisecting the school. Linked by a private underpass, the north site became primarily for teaching whilst the south provided open space for sport and recreation. An indoor sports centre was opened in 1980 and helped the school establish a reputation as one of London's finest sports schools.

In September 2013, the Sports Centre Campaign was launched to raise money to upgrade the facilities and after several months of intense fundraising through a wide range of activities, the campaign raised £4.5m.

The new, recently opened Sports Centre is housed in a stunning glass fronted building

and has a swimming pool with an adjustable floor, a large sports hall, fitness suite and three studios.

F T Leisure provided the pool’s water treatment and filtration systems and the moveable floor system for the 25-metre, 6-lane pool. The moveable floor will allow a sub-aqua diving club for disabled people to use the facilities as well as providing

optimum training conditions for the school’s competitive athletes.

The main contractor for the project was Jerram Falkus Construction working together with architects FaulknerBrowns.

New Spa For Larkfield Leisure Centre Luxury spa facilities have been launched at Larkfield Leisure Centre in Kent following a £400,000 upgrade.

Operated by Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust on behalf of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Larkfield’s health suite has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment to bring the latest in spa and wellbeing experiences to the popular centre in Aylesford.

The health suite was launched in 1986 with its last major refurbishment taking place a decade ago. The redevelopment involved stripping the health suite back to its shell and redesigning the space to provide a wider range of facilities. These include a sauna with a capacity for ten people, a steam room with seating for eight and spa bath that can accommodate eight people at one time. An ice feature and new showers complete the offering.

A new air handling system ensures a comfortable temperature for users, while new flooring, wall tiles and lighting create the ideal environment for relaxation and rejuvenation. The facility also includes a hoist allowing those with limited mobility to access the spa bath.

The project was funded by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council and Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust, who invested £340,000 and £60,000 respectively in the scheme.

Cabinet member for communities Maria Heslop officially opened the spa along with Chairman of the Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust, Alan Nicholl, who said: “We are very excited to have the new spa facilities up and running at Larkfield. People are leading increasingly busy lives and these facilities provide an opportunity for relaxation and de-stressing. Our mental health is as important as our physical health and the new spa allows us to cater for both, offering holistic health and wellbeing for local people.”

NEWS WATER BABIES NAMED FRANCHISOR OF THE YEAR FINALIST Water Babies, one of the UK’s leading baby and toddler swim school, has been named as a finalist in the Franchisor of the Year category of the British Franchise Association Awards 2016. This category is the most coveted accolade of the awards, representing a passion and commitment to ethical franchising alongside the provision of exceptional support for franchisees.

Having won silver in 2013, this is the fourth consecutive year that Water Babies has been named a finalist and the company is hoping that 2016 will be the year it is crowned the outright winner at the awards evening in June.

There are seven finalists in this category and judges will be considering evidence of a strong infrastructure, support for the network, engagement with franchisees in strategic planning and open disclosure of management information.

NEW WATER PARK ON COURSE FOR JULY OPENING Scarborough Council has confirmed that the town’s new £14m North Bay waterpark is on-course to open in July.

The alpine themed Alpamare Scarborough waterpark will feature four water rides, offering up to 2,500 rides per hour on four-person floats, two-person tubes, racing mats and body slides.

In addition, the water park will host an indoor wave pool, outdoor family pool, outdoor infinity pool and other facilities.

A luxury spa with steam, sauna and treatment facilities will also be present.

Swiss-based Alpamare expects to attract up to half a million visitors annually to the new facility. The company currently operates four attractions in Europe, with the Scarborough development similar to one located in Switzerland.

Located in an area known as The Sands, the park forms part of a wider redevelopment being undertaken by developer Benchmark Properties.

50 Years Of Manufacturing Excellence Being in your 50th year as a manufacturer is in itself a major achievement but when that manufacturing base has been solely in electric swimming pool and spa heaters, with all the competition from overseas, it’s a milestone.

From its humble beginnings in 1966, in the back garden of its then founders Gerry Williams and Frank Udy, Thermalec Pool & Spa Products has been a stalwart of the industry, producing a range of electric heaters to suit all sizes of pools and spas.

NEWS FUTURE OF COLCHESTER OUTDOOR POOL AT RISK The future of a popular outdoor swimming pool in Essex is in doubt over rising cost fears.

Brightlingsea Pool in Colchester was due to be ready for the season ahead at the end of June, but the opening has been delayed with major repair and improvement works needed to bring the facility up to scratch.

An investigation took place after the pool started leaking water last year and essential works are likely to cost approaching £40,000.

The pool is run by Tendring District Council with a contribution from Brightlingsea Town Council and last summer the facility was subsidised to the tune of £65,000 – £55,000 coming from the district council, with an extra £10,000 coming from the town council.

In 2015 each pool visitor was heavily subsidised by council tax payers by around £7.60, with customers paying £3.80. None of the other local sports facilities were subsidised by more than £1.90 per visit.

With costs rising, the district council is now set to discuss the future of the pool.

SWIMTIME SHORTLISTED IN FRANCHISOR OF THE YEAR AWARDS Manchester-based Swimtime has been shortlisted for the Innovation category at the prestigious 2016 bfa HSBC Franchisor Of The Year Awards.

Established in 1997 by qualified swimming teacher Linda Price and her husband Barry Price, Swimtime offers swimming lessons in over 200 pools across the UK. It has 26 franchises nationwide and teaches over 18,500 swimming lessons a week.

Swimtime was nominated in the Innovation category following the implementation of a number of processes and brand guidelines. They aim to maximise franchisee growth and profitability, as well as improving compliance and consistency across the business.

Newcastle City Pool And Turkish Bath’s New Look Revealed Fusion Lifestyle, the charity behind the redevelopment of Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths has officially unveiled how the proposed £5m development will look once the refurbishment is complete.

A series of new CGIs of the site were officially launched at an event to mark the start of a six week public consultation. The visuals are part of a new public exhibition in the customer service area of Newcastle Civic Centre, which will run until 17 June 2016.

The exhibition includes information on the plans and the CGIs of the proposed development. The public are encouraged to give their feedback via forms at the exhibition and online.

The new images show how the charity will restore the heritage site in a sympathetic way, bringing the historic Grade II building back into use by creating a unique health and well-being destination for the people of Newcastle.

The City Pool and Turkish Baths building closed in 2013 and has been standing empty ever since.

The regeneration of the facility has been widely welcomed and it is expected to reopen to the public in spring 2018.

Peter Kay, Chief Executive of Fusion Lifestyle, said: “We’re delighted to launch the start of our public consultation process. We’re pleased with the plans for the development and these new CGIs show how we’ve worked with the structure of this iconic building to create something the public will be proud of.”

Plans for the site include restoration of the

Turkish Baths, the creation of a new health and fitness facility, improved access for disabled people and a new café/bistro. It is expected the regeneration work will begin later this year.

In recent years Fusion has managed projects delivering more than £150m investment into the refurbishment and redevelopment of leisure facilities across the UK. This project marks their first in the North East of England.

New Oldham Leisure Centre Opens Oldham’s new £15m leisure centre is now fully open. The brand new centre in Middleton Road replaces the old leisure centre on Lord Street and has a range of facilities including a 25-metre, eight-lane competition pool with spectator gallery, a separate learning pool, wet changing village and a sauna and steam room.

FT Leisure was responsible for the water treatment and filtration work for the two pools and worked alongside the main contractor, Willmott Dixon, GT Architects and structural engineers, Ramboll. All work is to specifications aimed at attracting some major county competitions to the venue. It also acts as a physical bridge, linking Oldham College to Oldham Sixth Form College.

Ensure Your Pool Operational Procedures Are Up-to-date Many leisure centres and clubs with aquatic facilities do not have full, up-to-date operating procedures in place. The emphasis in recent years has often been placed on the operators to ensure their NOPs, EAPs, risk assessments and staff training are in keeping with latest industry guidelines. Often, NOPs, EAPs and procedures are in place from original installation and have not been updated since to current guidelines or training given for correct operation.

If the Ooperator does not take action to put in place correct operational plans; undertake appropriate risk assessments; ensure designated staff are correctly trained; and emergency procedures are in place, then they

may face negligence suits, temporary closure of facilities or long term reputational damage should any incidents occur that are considered to have been preventable had the correct guidelines been in place.

A high volume of children use swimming pools, (who are the vulnerable users for the most part) making it essential to adhere to water safety, chemical, operational, lifeguard requirements, maximum bather volumes, operational procedures and Health & Safety guidelines, in order to prevent avoidable accidents and deaths in and around pools.

Having worked with a range of private and public pools, BRIO Group found that almost 80% of NOPs and EAPs fell far short of the current standard required. Some places in fact had no documentation at all and staff were not trained on how to operate the pool correctly. Even simple procedures such as water testing were incorrectly taken or recorded

and there was a lack of knowledge on how to treat the water should readings be outside recommended parameters.

BRIO Group recommends that to prevent incidents and avoid risks that all operational procedures are checked, in place and up to date. As a lead awarding body for swimming teaching in the UK, STA believes that there can often be confusion and a lack of understanding with regards to what regulations, legislation or recommendations swimming teachers should and should not follow.

In response, STA launched a free Swimming Teaching Code of Practice in April, an initiative which has been designed to support and clarify every aspect of what their 9,000+ members need to know when teaching swimming – from safeguarding, qualification competencies, teaching in the water, teaching ratios, lifesaving cover, pool temperature and lots more.

Kayle Burgham, STA’s Technical Manager for Aquatics said they were extremely proud to have launched the Code of Practice and commented: “As an organisation committed to supporting our members, we want to ensure that our swimming teachers are delivering high quality swimming lessons and that they are insured and protected when doing so.

“This document creates clarity and un-shades the grey areas surrounding the legislation requirements for members qualified to teach STA’s Level 2 Baby and Pre-school, Disability and Award and Certificate Swimming Teaching qualifications,” confirmed Kayle.

Uniquely, the 56-page document, which is colour coded by chapter and by teaching qualification, brings together all the current policies and procedures that teachers should already be implementing, into one user-friendly reference guide. The only new changes are updates to the baby swimming policy in line with STA’s ongoing partnership with Birthlight.

NEWS STA LAUNCH FREE NEW SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAMME STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) has launched a free new teaching programme for schools to help providers meet national curriculum standards while ensuring learners are water confident.

The School Swimming programme, which features eight achievement awards, aims to improve the quality and standard of school swimming lessons, and uniquely incorporates key lifesaving and water safety skills at every stage of the programme.

It has been created by STA as a standalone, bespoke programme so that it does not impact upon or conflict with what learners achieve in their private swim lessons outside of school. For transparency, there are however, clear links to the STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme, Scottish Swimming levels as well as the National Curriculum key stage requirements.

Claire Brisbourne, STA’s Operations Director said it not only meets national curriculum requirements in relation to strokes and distances, it will also uniquely ensure that children are water confident by introducing key lifesaving and water safety skills at every stage of the programme.

EVERYONE ACTIVE SECURES SOUTHWARK CONTRACT Everyone Active has beaten off stiff competition from a number of rival operators to land an initial seven-year contract as Southwark Council’s Sports and Leisure services partner.

The win marks a significant blow for rival operator Fusion Lifestyle, which had held the contract since 2000. Everyone Active were selected following a ‘blind’ procurement process, in which the council chose a new provider based on what individual services could be provided.

The contract comprises eight leisure centres in Southwark, including the new £20m Castle Centre. Fusion will hand over to Everyone Active towards the end of June, with existing staff transferring to the new provider.

Olympic Centre Benefits From Ceramiflo Pool Filtration Although new to the UK market, Ceramiflo filtration systems (manufactured by Provital of Denmark) have been successfully used in many pools across Scandinavia and further afield, including at the Ankerskogen Svømmehal Olympic Centre in Norway – the largest public leisure centre in the country.

Completed back in 2013, the primary reason that Ceramiflo was selected as the filtration system for the construction of the six-pool Olympic Swimming Centre was the low consumption of water and energy compared to traditional solutions. The fully automated backwash uses 80% less water than traditional backwashing and does not require a backwash holding tank.

In addition, the plantroom footprint required for Ceramiflo is more than 30% less than for sand filters, providing a significant saving on construction costs, and maximising revenue generating floor space.

The Ceramiflo system installed had 44 ceramic membranes in total, providing a capacity in excess of 1,300 cubic metres of water per hour. Serving six pools, including 50 and 25 metre Olympic pools and two therapy pools, the modular system provides operational flexibility, whilst the option to monitor online remotely saves on operation and maintenance staffing costs.

“We believe this project demonstrates a willingness in the industry to move toward the

more environmentally friendly solutions. The Provital system will save a lot of water, energy and chemicals and more importantly the water quality is better and due to the reduced need for chlorine the environment for the users and staff is better. Using less water is also an important environmental argument which is very important for us,” said Jonny Mörch, CEO of ENWA ABC Tech. after the project was completed.

UK’s Second Oldest Outdoor Pool Reopens Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool reopened in May following a £750,000 refurbishment and investment in new facilities.

The works, which included new changing facilities, meeting rooms, an office and housing for the pool’s pump and heating machinery represent Phase One of redevelopment works at the 147 year old public swimming pool.

Originally built in 1869, the heated pool is used annually by more than 20,000 people and run by a small group of volunteers and trustees. The pool, which is closely linked to the local community, is fed by natural spring water from an on site well, which has been revealed and covered with a glass top as part of the works, allowing visitors to see the source of the water.

The further planned works (which is hoped will be completed during the 2016/2017 winter season should an additional £160,000 of funding be sourced) will include solar panels, disabled access ramps and pool covers.

Mike Cutts, Chairman of Cirencester Open Air Pool commented: “The initial work was made possible through the hard work of our volunteers and the generosity of several local organisations. We are lucky that one particularly supportive local donor provided a

significant percentage of the funds needed, allowing the project to go ahead. The new changing rooms and facilities were a much needed change to the pool. Our old facilities were becoming harder and more expensive to maintain and the work we have undertaken will ensure another 100 years of use and pleasure for both local residents and visitors to Cirencester.”

NEWS NEW £650,000 POOL OPENS IN DERBY A new swimming pool, which aims to fill a gap left behind by the closure of the city’s Moorways Pool earlier this year, has opened for business.

The new, privately-owned pool at Stenson Marina is aimed specifically at providing swimming lessons for both adults and children.

The new facility is the result of a campaign by an experienced swimming instructor to have her own premises. Sarah Bates, who runs Sarah Bates School of Swimming has more than 25 years’ experience and more than two years ago, set about securing investment for the pool from a number of local partners. £650,000 was raised to build the state-of-the-art 20 metre pool which features sensory lighting and a solar power heat exchange system, with work beginning late last year.

HOPES OF ‘COMPETITION STANDARD’ POOL FOR INVERURIE SCHOOL A new £54m secondary school in Scotland could include a ‘competition standard’ pool.

Initial proposals for Inverurie Community Campus have been unveiled and have already sparked talk of locals being keen to raise the extra cash needed to turn the planned six-lane pool into an eight-lane one.

Local councillor Bryan Stuart, said: “What we have got on the cards is a six-lane pool, a training pool plus a hydrotherapy pool.

“There is a lot of interest and pool users would be very keen to see the pool made eight-lane, which is competition standard but there is very substantial cost involved with that, basically we’d have to find community funding for the difference.

We’d have to find the money ourselves.”

Work on the project is not due to start until 2018, but Aberdeenshire Council is seeking feedback on its proposals for the school.

Plans Submitted For Coventry Waterpark New artist’s impressions of how the city centre’s state of the art waterpark will look have been released.

The release follows the application for planning permission submitted by FaulknerBrowns Architects on behalf of Coventry City Council.

The circular building – on the site of Christchurch House and Spire House in New Union Street – has been designed to reflect the city’s ribbon weaving past.

The new waterpark is expected to cost £37m and will include a 25m pool, a wave pool, six flume rides, a lazy river, toddlers’ splash area, spa and sauna.

It is understood that Water Technology Inc. (WTI), who specialise in water park development, are providing specialist advice on the design of the pools and indoor features.

Councillor Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader, said: “The new images of the waterpark look fantastic and it’s clear that it will be a great addition to our city’s changing skyline. I’m sure local people and visitors will enjoy the excitement that our new water park will offer.

“The submission of planning permission is the next step and I look forward to watching the development as it progresses.”

Work is set to start later this year with the city centre waterpark expected to open in 2018.

OC-1 Filter Media Launches To Great Acclaim Since Certikin announced its worldwide exclusive distributorship of the ground breaking OC-1 in January, the filter media has acquired a growing fan base and is now being used and tested in over 40 countries worldwide.

Unlike traditional methods that use entrapment, OC-1 works through settlement and harnesses advances in pump technology and variable speed pumps/controllers.

The new British manufactured filtration media has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1, it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller.

Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “Since the launch of OC-1 we have had great feedback on the product and have good results with new installations going in every week. OC-1 is a change in mindset from using traditional media as the speed of water through the bed is critical. This is true for both domestic and commercial applications and we have found that getting the speed right produces fabulous results. The Institut de la Filtration et des

Techniques Séparatives (IFTS) has recently conducted some independent tests on the filter media and as the remarkable results reveal below, OC-1 passed with flying colours!

The benchmark for any filtration media in Europe is EN16713-1, which is the European Standard for Filtration System. Three key tests are part of this standard and these are: Turbidity Reduction Efficiency Test: The European standard states that a minimum reduction in turbidity of 50% must be achieved in this test.

OC-1 achieved an amazing 93.7% after 20 cycles.

Retention Capacity Test: This test is designed to measure the amount of test dust retained by the filter media by adding particulate at regular intervals until the turbidity rises or the differential pressure rises by more than 0.7 bar.

Traditional filtration media tends to last around three and a half hours but after an impressive nine hours IFTS had to stop

the test on OC-1 as they ran out of time.

Within this time neither the turbidity nor the pressure had risen and OC-1 retained 96.1% of the particulate added to the test system.

Therefore the retention capabilities of OC-1 far exceeded that of the EN16713-1 test procedure making it one of the top performing media at this test.

Particulate Retention Efficiency and Retention Capacity Test: The aim of this test is to define the size of particulates that the media can remove after one pass and also identify the amount of dust needed to be added to the filter for the capacity test whereby the differential reaches 0.7 bar.

On a single pass, the filtration efficiency and retention of OC-1 was an average of 81% of 10 micron particulates, 90% of 14 micron and 99% of 20 micron. It also retained 10-11% of 1 micron particles per pass. Contaminant was constantly added for a period of eight hours and during this time a total of 154 grams of test dust was added, the differential pressure of the OC-1 did not rise. The defining limit of the retention capacity test was not reached and therefore OC-1 exceeded the capabilities of the lab to test it to EN16713-1. OC-1 is the only filter media IFTS has ever tested that could beat the test itself!

Having algae problems that re-occur after the spring opening of a swimming pool can be a headache for pool service companies and end users alike.

For pool companies, it can be a thorn in the side leading to unpaid invoices, unnecessary repeat visits and a lack of customer confidence in the business.

This can be easily resolved by using the correct products not just at the spring open up, but every time an algae bloom occurs. “People tend to forget that chlorine and algaecides only kill and control algae, they do not remove phosphate,” said Paul Grunhut, Director at Lo-Chlor Chemicals Limited. “It is this killing phase that releases the phosphate back into the water and whilst the pool may be crystal clear, there is an underlying problem still in water – phosphate.”

This not only saves the end user money but enhances their bathing experience.”

RLSS UK Launches Critically Acclaimed Pool Extraction Board For Faster Rescues The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) has launched the new and improved Pool Extraction Board (PXB) for simpler and more efficient swimming pool rescues.

Developed by a team of engineers, researchers and designers, the new board has been rigorously tested in both shallow and deep pools to ensure it meets stringent safety standards. The design of the PXB is simple but versatile. It is fitted with head blocks used in ambulances and hospitals to ensure head and neck stabilisation during rescue making the PXB suitable for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury. It can also be used in place of an assisted lift and accommodate

heavier or pregnant casualties, reducing the manual handling risk of injury to a lifeguard or supporting staff.

The PXB has received critical acclaim from industry and aquatic experts for its revolutionary role in lifeguarding.

IQL UK, RLSS UK’s trading subsidiary and leader in lifeguarding and pool safety training, is currently training its National Trainer Assessors throughout the country in the use of the PXB with the majority expected to be qualified by 1 June 2016.

Carbon Negative Pool Receives Industry Accolade An indoor swimming pool featuring a Calorex environmental control unit has been praised for its energy efficiency credentials, after scooping a top industry award.

Located on the edge of Northumberland National Park, the pool, which is part of a carbon negative residential property, took Gold in the sustainability category at the 2016 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards.

The Calorex Variheat III, was specified for the project to control the operation of the heat source and combine it with a highly efficient heat pump dehumidifier to provide air and water heating, humidity control, ventilation and energy recovery.

Mick Guthrie of Sunderland-based pool company Whitewaters, who installed the pool and specified the Calorex Variheat commented: “This scheme proves that properly utilising the very best in renewable technology can allow a pool, which is so

often seen as an environmental no-no, to be collaboratively integrated into a significantly carbon negative development.

“We selected the Calorex unit based on our long term relationship and the performance and reliability of the Calorex product.”

The pool has a three-tiered heating system designed to optimise the various heat generating systems available on the site. Firstly, the pool water is used as a heat store for the 12kW solar thermal heat system installed on the plant room roof. Secondly, when the solar thermal system is insufficient, the pool system draws heat from a buffer tank under the plant room floor, which has an immersion heater powered by a 10kW wind turbine. Thirdly, the pool system also has the capability of drawing heat from a 3.8kW ground source heat pump, one of five installed on the site.

New Shower Technology To Halve Water Bills

On 1 January this year, the first tier of compulsory minimum energy efficiency requirements for ventilation units became a legal requirement, with more stringent criteria coming into effect from 1 January 2018.

Working Together For A Stronger And Safer Industry With a busy summer ahead, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks at some of the work that is taking place to raise standards and ensure a stronger and safer wet leisure sector

A

s we move towards the summer, the popularity of recreation in water (especially outdoors) grows and with this, the risks to safety increase too. As you will read in the RoSPA and ASA article on pages 36 and 37, on average, more than 400 people drown in the UK each year and 60 of these deaths are while ‘swimming’ (mostly in outdoor locations such as rivers and lakes) and that the number of deaths in either commercial or domestic swimming pools is significantly lower (typically between three – six people).

As an industry response to this article, there continues to be education and information to promote safety (especially for home pools), including the importance of adult supervision.

During June (18 – 26), it is Drowning Prevention Week and many wet leisure organisations are working to promote awareness of the number of accidental drownings that happen every year in the UK. In this issue, there is more information about swimming safety and Drowning Prevention Week from the perspective of RoSPA and the ASA on pages 36 and 37.

The new European standard for domestic swimming pools (EN 16582) is now available and it recommends the installation of safety signage and a safety device to assist in reducing drowning incidents. These devices typically include ‘safety’ covers, fences, enclosures, and in some instances, pool alarms may also be installed as an extra layer of protection. This voluntary self-regulation (through standards) on safety has been the fundamental principle of why SPATA and many other Pool & Spa Associations across Europe have invested time and money to develop the domestic swimming pool standards, so that they are fit for purpose. The standards are not a Law, but they are considered the relevant guidance that pool professionals are expected to follow and failure to do so, without a suitable alternative, will be an issue if a problem arises.

shocking, they should not detract from the fact that our industry provides people with an activity that has unrivalled opportunities to get fit, have fun, lead a more stress-free lifestyle and promotes their wellness through the use of the many wet leisure products that are available. While we must be vigilant about safety, we also must help to ensure that the growing demand for our products is met with high-quality performance, impressive customer service and a desire to keep on improving.

One very important way that our industry continues to demonstrate quality is through showcasing the annual winners from the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards. Some of the winners will also be shortlisted to represent the UK in Europe, at the 2016 EUSA European Pool & Spa Awards to be presented at Forum Piscine, Bologna in February 2017. The list of companies shortlisted are expected to be named in the next issue of SPN, so good luck to all of our entries at this year’s EUSA Awards.

One other important piece of news on European standards is the ongoing development of the domestic spa and hot tub standards and following the recent meeting held in Helsinki, Finland, the progress made is likely to lead to the draft being prepared by the end of this year. If this deadline is met, then there will be public consultation at some point from April 2017 onwards after the standard gets translated into French and German (as the working language is in English).

This work involves a huge range of experts from across Europe and the UK benefits from the very close relationship that exists between BISHTA and North America, through its existing links with APSP / IHTA. These links are set to grow even stronger, as other topics of mutual interest are debated and common goals shared between the trade associations to improve the information and education available to the hot tub industry, in the first instance.

Talking of education and information, a range of topics will be shared with BISHTA and SPATA members, at their respective annual

conferences, so please pencil the relevant date(s) into your diary. For BISHTA, it is Tuesday 4 October and for SPATA, it is Thursday 13 October. Full details of the programme for both days will be shared via the weekly e-newsletters and the venue will be in Andover.

T

he National Water Safety Forum’s (NWSF’s) new UK Drowning Prevention Strategy aims to halve water-related fatalities by 2026.

There are still more accidental drowning fatalities annually than fire deaths in the home or cycling deaths on the road. About 400 people accidently drown in the UK each year, the equivalent of one person dying every 20 hours. The number of people drowning while ‘swimming’ is about 60 people per year (mainly in open water) and of this total swimming figure, on average between 3 – 6 people drown in swimming pools, but there is a desire from the multi-agency NWSF for everyone to play their part in reducing the incidence of drowning.

The Forum’s new strategy document was created in response to the World Health Organisation’s report on global drowning which recommended that every nation should have a drowning prevention strategy.

The National Water Safety Forum (which has a number of swimming-related members including the BSPF) says lives have been saved due to existing initiatives but more can be done to reduce fatalities further.

To help achieve this, the Forum plans to address the following targets: • To give every child the opportunity to learn to swim and receive water safety education at primary school and, where required, at Key Stage 3;

• To give every community with water risks a community level risk assessment and water safety plan; • To work to increase awareness of everyday risks in, on and around water; • To ensure all recreational activity organisations have a clear strategic risk assessment and plans that address key risks; • To understand water-related self-harm better.

DROWNING STATISTICS Men are the most ‘at risk’ group, accounting for eight in ten of all UK accidental drownings.

Male fatalities rise markedly from mid to late teens, peaking in the 20 – 29 year-old age group. Among women, those aged 50 – 59 are the most frequent casualties.

England has the highest number of accidental drownings (73%). Wales has 10%, Scotland 14% and Northern Ireland 3%.

However, relative to population, Wales and Scotland carry a disproportionate burden.

Over half of fatal incidents (52%) occur in four of 14 specific UK regions – South East England, South West England, Wales and Scotland.

Two in every three fatalities happen at inland waters such as canals, rivers, lakes, quarries and reservoirs.

In almost half of fatal incidents the person concerned had no intention of entering the water – they were taking part in activities like walking.

The emphasis of the strategy is to act as a call to action so organisations and individuals are being asked to sign up to, and shape, its vision, aims and principles and use the targets to guide their contributions. of the location or premises and lack of use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment.

Understanding the behaviour of individuals surrounding a drowning will help in the design of relevant behavioural change messages, the strategy reasons.

Behaviour traits that increase the risk of drowning or being involved in a waterassociated accident include: • Underestimating risks; • Lack of knowledge of the risks; • Lack of competence; • Ill-informed thrill seeking; • Lack of parental supervision of children.

work is being undertaken to achieve this. The following initiatives are a couple of examples of the types of activity that are being offered to improve water education and water confidence, to make a difference in reducing the likelihood of drowning while swimming.

SCHOOL SWIMMING AND SWIM SAFE

The ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) is committed to ensuring every child learns how to swim and knows how to be safe in and around water.

This year marks 125 years since schools started teaching swimming, and it continues to be included in the national curriculum today.

Since 2012 the national governing body for swimming, the ASA, has surveyed primary schools to establish attainment levels.

Whilst there has been some movement on the statistics, they have generally stayed around the 50% mark, with the most recent figures revealing that only 52% of seven to 11-year olds are able to swim the minimum requirement of at least 25 metres unaided.

In 2014 the ASA launched its School Swimming Charter to support primary schools to deliver high quality swimming lessons. By providing resources and advice – including how to access the PE and Sports Premium – the ASA wants to help schools to breakdown current barriers to swimming provision.

This is an ambition shared by the government, which included the commitment to ensuring that all children leave primary school able to swim in their recent sports strategy, Sporting Future.

Jon Glenn, Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA, said: “Swimming is a brilliant activity that once learned, can be enjoyed forever. It is also a great way for children to stay healthy, opens the door to a vast number of other fun, water-based sports and, most importantly, can help to prevent drownings. This is why we were pleased to see school swimming referenced so strongly in the government’s recent sports strategy.

“With only half of primary school children able to swim, it is imperative that we all work together – government, schools and providers of school swimming – to make a significant impact in the way that school swimming is delivered.”

At the end of April over 160 primary schools across the country joined the ASA in

celebrating the 125th anniversary of school swimming and raising awareness of the importance of learning to swim. During the day schools held swimming galas, water safety sessions and 1890-styled school swimming lessons as part of the Big School Swim.

Glenn said: “Swimming has been taught in schools since 1890 and while the methods may have changed, the message that every child should have the opportunity to learn how to swim and know how to be safe in and around water, remains as strong as ever.

“Schools play an incredibly important role in teaching our children how to swim. For many children, swimming at school will be their only opportunity to learn this vital lifesaving skill, which is why it was great that so many schools joined us in celebrating school swimming with the Big School Swim.”

But it is not just in the confines of swimming pools that children need to know how to keep themselves safe in water.

Swim Safe is a free, open water initiative developed by the ASA in partnership with the RNLI. Founded in 2013, the annual programme has grown from a single location in Bude, to 14 locations across England and Wales.

Open to young people aged between seven and 14-years old who are already able to swim, the 45 minute sessions teach children the differences between swimming in a pool and in the sea or lake.

Delivered by ASA accredited swimming teachers and RNLI lifeguards, the sessions are a mix of land-based safety lessons and in-water tuition. At the end of the sessions, all children are presented with a t-shirt and information on beach and swimming safety.

Since Swim Safe began, the main aim of the initiative has stayed the same: to provide children with the opportunity to experience swimming and water safety in an open water

environment.

The pilot programme was held at Bude Sea Pool and attracted 2,315 young people. It ran six days a week for five weeks during the summer holiday and attracted people from as far afield as Derbyshire.

The main reasons parents gave for signing their children up to a Swim Safe session were ‘to ensure my child is aware of water safety and understands the dangers of the sea’ and ‘to ensure my child is safe when at the beach’.

As a result of this success, in 2014 Swim Safe was rolled out to four locations, and last year it grew to seven. In 2015 Swim Safe For Schools was also introduced, allowing schools to take advantage of the sessions. This proved very successful with over 1,700 pupils taking part during the final weeks of the summer term and helped to ensure the Swim Safe safety messages are spread as widely as possible.

In three years, Swim Safe has helped over 11,600 young people to experience safe outdoor swimming. The 2016 campaign gets under way in July and aims to double that number, helping, even more, young people to stay safe in the water.

Is Your Business Protected?

Specialist insurance brokers Nsure highlight the latest developments on Cyber Insurance and the use of Dash Cams for businesses within the UK wet leisure sector

T

he 50/50 claim settlement is probably one of the most frustrating aspects of insurance.

You know that the other driver is lying or if you are ‘being kind’ – mistaken in their recollection of the accident – but without an independent witness, you are decreed partly to blame.

But now you can have an independent witness in the form of a Dash Cam (dashboard camera) to provide video evidence if you are involved in an accident.

The film footage can help establish your innocence, which in turn can protect your no claims bonus or fleet discount, assist with the recovery of your excess and help avoid increased insurance premiums.

Insurers view the cameras positively, as whether the footage helps to defend a claim or establishes their driver was at fault, either way, it is beneficial if it avoids arguments and legal action. If claims are dealt with more efficiently, it reduces their costs. They also feel that cameras encourage drivers to drive more carefully if they know their actions are recorded, resulting in safer driving and a lower risk.

Some insurers offer discounts of up to 10% off their premiums, so with Dash Cams starting from £175, those with just one or two vehicles should look at the value of Dash Cams over the longer term, although fleet operators may see an immediate return.

Anything that helps to improve the claims experience will be reflected in reducing, or at least maintaining, lower insurance costs and some insurers will also have risk management funds to contribute towards the cost of the cameras. There are also wider benefits to consider; safer driving is associated with improved fuel economy and reduced wear and tear on vehicles.

little risk, most companies have a reliance on computers and the internet for storing customer information, communication (email and telephones), online banking or marketing (websites). Larger firms may have computerised stock control and those involved in retail may use and store credit card information. If so, the terms of the mercantile agreement are onerous and fines can be imposed if data security is breached.

Supplying Electricity To Hot Tubs And Spas With the popularity of hot tubs and spas on the increase in the UK, NICEIC, the UK’s leading voluntary regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry, look at the design considerations for the electrical supply to them

T

he increasing use of hot tubs and spas, in both indoor and outdoor locations, has brought with it an increase in the number of questions posed about the safety requirements for the associated electrical installations.

The questions raised result from the need to know what particular requirements of BS 7671 should be applied to a given situation, and as the installation of hot tubs are not treated as special locations, the general requirements of BS 7671 apply; and it will be for the designer of the electrical installation to take due account of the increased risks associated with the installation of such equipment. For example, in addition to the general requirements, should the requirements set out in Section 701 (Rooms containing a bath or shower), Section 702 (Swimming pools and other basins) or both apply? This article addresses such questions.

INCREASED RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK As with rooms containing a bath or shower, the indoor hot tub introduces an increased risk of electric shock due to the reduction in body resistance, particularly contact resistance, due to immersion, or partial immersion, in water.

For hot tubs and spas located outdoors, the risk of electric shock is further increased because contact with the general mass of Earth is likely. The reason for this is that under earth fault conditions, touch1 voltages are increased due to persons being in contact with ‘true’ Earth – the ground.

INDOOR HOT TUBS AND SPAS Where a hot tub or spa is placed in a location containing a bath or shower, the requirements of Section 701 have to be met. However,

SPAS IN SHELTERS AND ENCLOSURES Where the hot tub, spa or swim spa is housed in a purpose-made shelter (not a gazebo type shelter) or enclosure, the location will be subject to similar electrical safety considerations as a bathroom, and the most appropriate requirements to apply are likely to be those of Section 701.

Where the hot tub, spa or swim spa is an ‘open-air’ type, the location falls within the scope of Regulation 702.11 (basins of swimming pools, fountains and paddling pools, and their surrounds). The requirements of Section 702 should, therefore, be applied in full for this type of installation.

OTHER HOT TUB AND SPA TYPES Where a hot tub or spa does not fit into either of the categories previously described, the electrical installation designer must use engineering judgement in applying the relevant requirements. Electrical equipment should be suitable for the particular external

Get The Balance Right Robbie Phillips and Richard Lamburn, STA’s Technical Pool Plant Team, look at water balance – get it wrong and it can cause serious damage not only financially, but to a company’s reputation too!

W

ater balance is a concept that can aid the management of pool water quality. It is based on a calculation derived from the measurements of pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, temperature and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).

A relatively simple formula has been developed by the industry over a number of years where the water can be deemed: • Balanced – no tendency to lay down scale or be aggressively corrosive.

• Corrosive – will be aggressive and corrode and/or erode metals, concrete, screed, grout etc.

• Scale forming – will tend to lay down scale and outside recommended parameters can block pipes, cause rough edges and affect other plant parts.

So if we study these particular facets of water balance, we can begin to realise the adverse effects that the whole or parts of the water treatment system can have on a pool facility if not managed correctly – they can be radically costly to repair and can cause potential injury situations.

METHODS Indexes are calculations that determine how far away the current conditions are from an ideal pool water quality condition. There are two methods commonly used: Langelier and Palin tests.

Whichever method is used there will be a numerical indication of the water balance condition for any facility – pools, spas etc.

When the Index is negative, the water is corrosive. When the Index is positive, the water is scale forming.

The Palintest Water Balance Index is a simplified version of the Langelier Saturation Index and has been created with the aim of making it applicable and easy for use in pools.

Water Balance equations and rules are useful for understanding the different interactions in your pool, but are not to be used for control alone.

PARAMETERS TESTED • Total dissolved solids (TDS) are the sum of the weight of soluble material in water. This can build up due to various reasons. Mains water, for example, can sometimes have a TDS of several hundred mg/l. Disinfectants and other pool chemicals will inevitably produce significant TDS levels, of chloride and sulphates in particular. TDS should not be allowed to rise more than 1,000 mg/l above source mains water, with an absolute maximum of 3,000 mg/l.

• pH – how acidic / alkali the water is.

• Total alkalinity – measure of the alkaline content of water.

• Calcium hardness – measure of calcium salts in water.

TEMPERATURE If the Langelier index is positive, the water is scale forming. A zero result indicates the water is in perfect balance, such that lime scale is just on the point of forming. The ideal operating range is + 0.1 to + 0.4. This indicates that the water is very slightly scale forming. This is desirable, because this will lead to a slight coating of lime scale being formed which will help protect pipe work from corrosion and erosion.

In a recent real case, we saw a pool that had neglected to take and analyse water balance test results over a number of years causing continual corrosion (as pictured here). This resulted in tile grouting being corroded and tiles being broken exposing sharp tile edges.

The position became intolerable and it was decided to close the pool; the following impact was experienced: • Closure for eight weeks • Loss of income and custom • Capital works costs of over £100,000

The EU: Are We ‘In’ Or Are We ‘Out’?

“With months of campaigning behind us and only days until the referendum, it’s impossible to avoid talking about Brexit but surely the EU is just one of the things that ties our industry to the global economy,” says Jamie Adams, Goldens Coast’s Managing Director

T

he media is full of comment and opinion about Brexit and, unfortunately to my mind, that is mostly what it appears to be; just comment and opinion.

Even now at this late stage, facts seem to be sadly lacking and the opinions that are voiced seem to fall into two simple categories, ‘doomed if we do’ and ‘doomed if we don’t’.

It feels as if my friends on Facebook are just as well informed – or not – as the business editor of a national daily so I think that people will vote on emotional grounds and not after analysing and considering those elusive facts, and that’s no way to make a business decision.

Whichever way it goes, the choice to stay or leave is going to have an impact on business. It looks as if we’ll just have to wait and find out what that impact will be.

THE COMMON MARKET IS JUST A CORNER OF THE GLOBAL VILLAGE We joined the EEC, as it was then, 43 years ago and we’ve been rather half-hearted members ever since.

It’s almost as if, as a nation, we agree with that old Groucho Marx comment that, ‘I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member’. But whatever Britain’s commitment to Europe, real or perceived, we do a lot of business with them.

Just from Golden Coast’s point of view, I can quickly put together a list of innovative products that come from across the Channel. The BADU EasyFIt pump comes from Germany. DEL covers from France, Duratech heat pumps from Belgium. Our EVA Optic LED range comes from the Netherlands, Etatron dosing pumps from Italy. And the list goes on.

But we source products from around

the world. Tariffs, trade agreements and exchange rates affect all those deals. One of the things about being an island nation is that you tend to do a lot of business with overseas partners.

And it’s not just foreign trade that affects the British wet leisure industry.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD Global warming and concerns about a worldwide energy crisis have driven interest and demand for energy saving products in our industry in a way that would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. Heat pumps and LED lighting have gone from being a niche to being the norm.

The sad fact that the world is a much more troubled place is affecting how we spend our leisure time. One survey shows that 30% of travellers consider the threat of terrorism as the most important factor when deciding where to go on holiday. Can it be long before significant numbers of people decide to simply stay here and treat themselves to a pool, sauna or spa installed in the safety of their own home?

property demand in the UK far outstrips supply. That pushes house prices up and it makes it harder to move.

It’s yet another driver for people to improve their properties and en-suite saunas and steam rooms, indoor pools and a hot tub in the garden are sure to be on that list of home improvements.

But are we still in recession? Opinion about that seems to be as divided as opinion about the referendum. One thing seems clear though, the rich are getting richer and that has an impact too. In last year’s Wet Leisure Survey, one respondent said, ‘It’s impossible to ignore the affect that banker’s bonuses have on keeping the pool building industry in the south east buoyant’.

SO WHAT’S THE FORECAST? I wish I could tell the future, but I can’t and I think it’s safe to assume that no one else can either.

What muddies the waters for those who try to make predictions is the sheer complexity and inter-connectedness of the modern world. The old idea of the butterfly that flaps its wings in one part of the world and causes a hurricane in another has become true. But it has manifested itself in the worlds of economics and politics.

I think our industry is brighter and better than it ever has been before. I think we are riding the wave of a massive increase in interest on health and wellbeing. I think we are embracing new technologies and new ideas.

All of those things are good and I will add one other.

As I write this, the sky is blue, the sun is shining and the day is warm and dry. I hope when you read this, whether we are about to stay in Europe or about to leave, the weather is exactly the same. That would be part of my ideal forecast.

There’s No Stopping Swim Spas Whether it’s a value for money party spa or a high end training aid for an athlete, in the UK, it seems swim spas have now been widely accepted as an alternative to the more traditional choices of an above-ground or smaller one-piece pool.

With new brands entering the market in 2016 and new models on offer from manufacturers keen to secure their piece of the market, it seems there’s no stopping the swim spa success story and we take a closer look By Jon Wadeson

s a product that offers all the benefits of both swimming pools and hot tubs, wrapped up conveniently in a single, easy to own package, it’s no real surprise that swim spas have been a big hit with end users and their popularity continues to grow.

Confirming the sector’s popularity, Paul Thomas, Spa Product Manager at SCP UK said: “Swim spa sales have been growing year on year for the last decade but in the last 12 months, swim spa sales growth is outstripping anything else in the hot tub and spa category. Enquiries are up and dealers brave enough to put a display model on show are reaping the rewards.”

With success comes competition, and in the quest for their own piece of the market,

hot tub brands that didn’t have swim spa options have added them and the result is the widest ever choice of models.

One of the relative latecomers to the swim spas party was the Marquis brand, but they had kept a close eye on developments within the sector. “The original decision to innovate with robust polymers rather than the typical melted acrylic found in other brands, and to now offer a new 518cm length/135cm depth unit with Whitewater4 propulsion, have powered strong consumer interest and Aquatic Training Vessel sales over the past year,” stated Jim Johnston, VP Marketing at Marquis Corp. “It has been an excellent year!” he concluded.

Balanced Water Keeps The Shine!

It is vital that pool owners and operators understand the necessity to ensure pool water is correctly cared for to ensure the tiling is not damaged by a build up of scale and the grouting damaged by acidic low pH. Unbalanced pH will cause the calcium carbonate to leach out of the pool water and form discoloured patches on the tiles. Regular pool maintenance and correct balancing of the water will prevent scale build up and improve water.

• Total alkalinity level should fall between 80 and 120 ppm. This level should be adjusted prior to adjustment of pH.

Pool water should be tested to ensure pH levels remain between 7.2 and 7.6. This can be adjusted by using a pH balancer.

Calcium hardness levels should be maintained at between 200 and 235 ppm. Higher levels increase the risk of scaling. Reduce by adding fresh (soft) water or a scale inhibitor.

Daily testing will ensure the levels remain manageable.

Removing areas of waterline scale build up can be accomplished by scrubbing with a pool brush and the use of a tile cleaner that is compatible with pool chemicals.

Stunning Steel Lining A ‘Non-negotiable Must-have’

H

ornbeams is a magnificent multimillion pound new build private residence situated in North London.

The five bedroom house has many impressive features including this stunning basement swimming pool complex which recently won a silver award in the ‘Residential Indoor Pools Up To £200,000’ category at the 2016 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, held during SPATEX in Coventry.

Commissioned in April 2015, the 19 metre x 4 metre pool was designed and built by Sunderland based Whitewaters for the prestigious private development and features a unique stainless steel lining system from Aquinox.

Mick Guthrie of Whitewaters explained: “This was a high

specification development and the client had very set ideas about how the finishes should look throughout the property. Having recently swum in a commercial stainless steel pool, that standard of finish was a non-negotiable must-have. This presented quite a problem, as the pool walls formed part of the foundations for the house, and therefore had to be constructed from reinforced concrete.

We therefore designed and created a watertight concrete pool basin which was then lined with stainless steel panels to give the aesthetic qualities that the client desired.

Shows Roundup We look at what’s on and where over the coming months AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST POOL AND SPA TRADE SHOW HAS A NEW HOME After a decade at Jupiters, this year Australia’s SPLASH! Pool and Spa Trade Show will move across the road and be held in a bigger, single hall at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) which has 30% more floorspace than the previous show at Jupiters, which was the biggest ever Australian swimming pool and spa show.

In April, the Show officially sold out of exhibition space, boding well for what the organisers expect to be the biggest and best SPLASH! ever.

Being held on 17 and 18 August, the organisers are expecting 2,500 visitors to this year’s event.

“The benefits to exhibitors include all being in one hall, with easier access and higher ceilings. For visitors it will also mean they can visit all the companies in one place and we are able to build meeting places on the show floor,” said Simon Cooper, Managing Director for organisers Interpoint Events.

A NEW NAME AND MUCH MORE

A new name isn’t the only change for October’s Hot Tub Living Expo.

Returning to the NEC, the show will run over two full days on 24 and 25 October.

In addition, organisers are introducing an Exclusive VIP Preview Evening on Sunday 23 October for a selection of carefully picked companies and individuals. The Preview Evening will allow VIPs to spend quality time with exhibitors and to view the latest products and services before anyone else.

Water Safety USA Announces 2016’s Messaging Recently established Water Safety USA, a consortium of 13 national governmental and non-governmental organisations, has announced the group’s primary safety message for 2016; ‘Water Safety: it’s learning to swim and so much more’.

Each organisation will take time to focus its swim season messaging to assert that everyone should learn swimming and basic water safety skills before they are unexpectedly in the water. Water Safety USA also offers many online resources provided by the organisations which provide help on why and how a person should learn to swim.

“Warm weather is on the way, which means many families will be heading to beaches, pools, lakes and waterparks.

The many organisations that make up Water Safety USA want to make sure the adults are prepared and inform them on how beneficial swim lessons can be,” said Thomas M. Lachocki, Ph.D., a Water Safety USA representative

from the National Swimming Pool Foundation. “The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported in 2015 that every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. It breaks my heart because drowning is preventable with proper lessons and following simple safety tips.”

Water Safety USA has come together to promote learning to swim to the public and to educate through safety tips for each outlet of aquatic fun. Messages and tips on safety at pools and waterparks, natural bodies of water, and the home environment can all be found on the organisation’s website at www.watersafetyusa.org.

Drowning is the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for all ages in the United States, which is why Water Safety USA highly encourages people of all ages to participate in formal swim lessons.

IN BRIEF EVOQUA ACQUIRES NEPTUNE BENSON US Based Evoqua Water Technologies announced recently that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Neptune Benson, a leading manufacturer of high-quality water filtration and disinfection products for the recreational, industrial, and municipal water markets. Neptune Benson’s filtration and ultraviolet disinfection products can be found in more than 20,000 installations worldwide, covering 45 countries.

The transaction is expected to close this spring and is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

“We are excited to welcome the Neptune Benson team to the Evoqua Water Technologies family,” said Ron Keating, Evoqua Chief Executive Officer.

APSP & NSPF Boards Agree to Unify In the US, the boards of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) met in April and agreed in principle to merge the two organisations. Both boards believe that the merge will better support the present and future needs of the aquatics industry.

Rich Garbee, APSP Chairman of the Board, and G. Bruce Dunn, NSPF Chairman of the Board, jointly stated: “The aquatics industry has seen dramatic changes over the past ten years. APSP and NSPF each have a distinguished history of service to our industry. We are excited to build a vision where we can achieve even more together.”

A process is underway to plan and implement this merger of equals.

Sauna Showroom Grand Opening A Success A grey and soggy weekend at the end of April seemed like the perfect time to promote the warmth and wellness of Almost Heaven’s US-made saunas as the company hosted a Grand Opening for their 2,500 square foot showroom. What’s New Online With online sources providing more information than ever before, we highlight new or updated websites and companies that have started within the industry

One of the UK’s leading wellness suppliers recently launched their new website. Offering sauna and steam products to the domestic and commercial markets, the Aqualine Saunas website offers a wide range of wellness products from Harvia, Luxwel and SaunaMed along with a number of associated accessories. Aimed at the end user, the site provides plenty of information for the end user, explaining the benefits and differences between the products and provides a useful buyers guide. For the products offered, it goes into detail on each but very handily, allows visitors to compare products against each other. Completing the wellness offering, hot tubs are also available via a sister website.

In addition to their new Pleatco PoolMate® mobile app, Pleatco have launched a new content rich website. From the home page of the modern site, visitors are given four simple options – Pool, Spa, Community and Support – with videos for each describing the contents of that section. Once selected, each section contains a lot of information, which is easily navigated as it is essentially a single, scrollable page of content but divided up nicely by sections. It’s a site that’s been designed to be explored and video content features prominently throughout it. The previously mentioned PoolMate® mobile app can be downloaded from within the Community section.

With the introduction of their new branding, chemical specialist Lo-Chlor have also released a slick new website which contains a lot more information than its predecessor. The easy to navigate site essentially breaks down into three main sections – pool chemicals, hot tub chemicals and problem solving. If you know which product you are looking for, the new site displays clear information on each of the products within the Lo-Chlor range. If you navigate via the ‘problems’ section, it offers product solutions for a number of water issues along with suggestions for products to prevent the issues from happening in the first place. There’s also useful background information on each problem too.

Pentair Pool Europe have launched their new website and in addition to a much cleaner feel and more animation, the big difference is the way in which product information is organised and offered. When accessing the new, responsive site via the ‘Pool Professional’ option, visitors have access to a wealth of information on each of the company’s many products. Each has numerous download options for product literature and images. New products are neatly separated as are the company’s more eco-friendly pool products. Tools include calculators and videos along with a digital edition of the current Pentair Product Catalogue. A warranty section is also accessible.
