For an industry that is still somewhat reliant on good weather, or at least often that is the perception, the last couple of months have not been good news. Twelve months ago it was a similar story. However as was the case last year, businesses on the whole are still very busy and it seems there’s no let up in interest for the latest products and services our industry provides. And that’s great news as at this stage last year, we were building up to the referendum and despite the uncertainty the vote has brought, almost a year on, businesses do not seem to have been affected negatively by the outcome. In fact some businesses are even reporting a significant uplift in sales but on the whole, so far it really does appear to have been a case of keep calm and carry on! Going back to the weather, thankfully, the sun is now making a long overdue effort and there is even talk that we are in for a scorcher of a summer. Fingers crossed it turns out to be true as great summer weather this year really would be the icing on the cake for our industry. Concentrating on this edition, we explore what’s new in the above-ground pools market, a sector that’s coming under pressure from other wet leisure options but one that is so important at providing back
Tiling and mosaics also have the spotlight on them this issue plus we’ve a feature on hot tubs and their use in non domestic settings, in particular in holiday parks, lodges and cottage rentals. Tying in with this, there’s some very useful information from the BSPF on HSG282 and still on the subject of hot tubs, there’s a piece about the domestic electrical supplies to them. With hopefully warmer weather ahead and with June featuring a number of water safety events, throughout this edition, there’s numerous pieces of information about safety to consider too. Trade events, both in the UK and around the world, are also looked at in this issue as we roundup what’s on and where over the coming months. As if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams takes a light-hearted look at the recent surge in fake news while the STA have the second part of a look at the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium. There’s also useful further information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we’ve also got our roundup of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So with this issue covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading this issue of SPN and let’s hope the predictions of a scorcher of a summer are not yet more fake news!

World Leisure Completes £1.5m Refurbishment Of Ribby Hall’s Facilities Leyland-based World Leisure has completed a £1.5m overhaul of the wet leisure facilities at Ribby Hall Village Holiday Park in Wrea Green, Lancashire. Opened in 1997, the park’s pool is well known for its water slides and was given a refurbishment eight years ago, but bosses at the attraction decided the time was right for a complete revamp. One of the highlights in the revitalised pool area is a new 48m interactive play slide. As guests and members come down the slide, they can play an interactive touchpad game, with scores recorded once the ride is complete. Results can then be uploaded to social media platforms, with the top three scores displayed in the pool area. World Leisure also refurbished the splash pool and added an interactive aqua deck play structure, with tipping buckets and integral slides. A themed GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) toddlers’ pool links into the splash
Mark Leech, Senior Manager of Ribby Hall Village, said: “It is important as a business to continually invest and improve the facilities we offer to our customers. We believe the new interactive slide and new splash pool features will be real talking points that will bring family visitors back again and again. “The project was a challenging one, because the pool forms the centre of the building and, as a result, new access ways had to be created for members and guests, so they could continue to use the other facilities while works were in progress. “World Leisure has been excellent in really fast-tracking the installation with zero compromise on quality – with work that would normally take between 6 and 12 months completed within 12 weeks.” pool, with a slide and steps to open the pools up to all ages. A new sauna, steam room and feature showers, with all new filtration and controls were also installed by the company.

Hippo Bring A Splash To Exmouth Leisure Centre Hippo have recently worked in partnership with Alliance Leisure to install a range of interactive splash toys at Exmouth Leisure Centre. The bright and vibrant play features have been designed to increase water confidence in toddlers and young children of all abilities. Features include a colourful under the sea themed toddler slide with port hole mirrors. Toddlers can race up the steps at either side of the slide to see who can reach the top to slide into the pool first! Four aquatic themed play panels are mounted onto the pool wall at water level. They feature a selection of underwater visuals as well as mirrors, which children will enjoy peering at to watch their reflection. Two extra large interactive play panels infill the two central handrails leading down the steps into the pool. The panels

will encourage toddlers and less water confident children to enter the water. Each two-sided panel features a colourful underwater design with a series of moving sea characters, games and mirrors which provide tactile, visual and auditory stimulation. Alliance Leisure provides a unique solution to Local Authorities and Trusts wishing to develop quality leisure facilities with or without the need for capital expenditure. Alliance’s Business Development Manager, Julia Goddard commented: “The play feature installation aims to enhance the appeal to children and encourage more families to visit the centre
regularly, therefore boosting visitor numbers and revenue. The team at Hippo have been a pleasure to work with. Hippo has worked hard to ensure the design of the play area accommodates Exmouth Leisure Centre’s specific needs. The play features have been specially designed so that they can be installed around the pool, ensuring that
activities and classes within the pool are still able to take place. We will look forward to working with Hippo on more water play projects in the future.” Alliance Leisure 01278 444944 www.allianceleisure.co.uk Hippo Leisure 01752 771740 www.hippoleisure.com

NEWS OLYMPIC MEDALLIST OPENS £3M POOL COMPLEX Welsh Olympic medallist Jazz Carlin has opened a new £3m development at a Haven holiday park – Hafan y Môr in Pwllhel, Gwynedd. The swimmer was on hand to open Splash Away Bay officially, which is located at a former Butlins site. To celebrate the launch, Jazz, who won two silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, cut a ribbon to declare the pool open. A host of dignitaries as well as local schoolchildren also attended the official opening. The £3m investment has given the existing area a full revamp, with the additions of a new lane swimming pool and a toddler zone, along with updates to the existing wave pool, flumes and lazy river. Haven has invested £3m over the winter to redevelop the wet leisure complex fully and the improvements are part of a £5.5m reinvestment in the north Wales holiday park for 2017.
DEVELOPMENT COULD FUND £8M NORFOLK POOL North Norfolk’s biggest swimming and sports centre could be demolished and rebuilt as part of an ambitious project to improve leisure provision in the area. A new hotel and retail development could be built in Sheringham to fund a new state-of-the-art swimming pool in the town. North Norfolk District Council recently revealed this was the preferred option for replacing the ageing Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre, which opened in 1988, but it hadn’t ruled out refurbishing the existing facilities either. The local authority revealed the £8m project could be paid for through a combination of Sport England funding and long term loans plus income from additional development on neighbouring land.

Waterco At The Forefront Of Commercial Pool Filtration Solutions
Whether it is filtering the Leicester General Hospital’s hydrotherapy pool, a desalinisation system on a cruise ship or keeping the seal population at Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary happy and healthy, Waterco’s pool filtration solutions have long been the preferred choice for commercial operations that demand superior water quality. “Waterco Europe has been synonymous with superior water filtration solutions in the UK and Europe for more than 30 years. Not only do we stock up to 100 commercial filters at any one time – the only commercial manufacturer in the country to do so – but our research and development team is constantly setting new benchmarks in filter durability, versatility and reliability,” said Tony Fisher, Waterco Europe CEO. While known throughout the international pool, spa and water treatment industries for its superior strength and reliability, Waterco’s Micron Commercial Fibreglass Filters now boast two models that take high-pressure pool filtration to a whole new level. The Deep Bed SMD and SMDD models offer enhanced customisation options and the SPDD range incorporates a patented nozzle plate system which promotes uniform water flow when filtering and backwashing. “These filters are manufactured to the highest quality and enable Waterco to offer the commercial swimming pool industry a competitive range of filters, which in turn complements Waterco’s ever-popular Lacron range of LCX and LCP models,” Tony explained. Waterco Europe’s new Micron Deep Bed SMD and SMDD commercial sand filters consist of a fibreglass inner shell that is reinforced with

polyester resin and then over wound with fibreglass filament. They’re available in 2.5 Bar, 4 Bar, 6 Bar, 8 Bar and 10 Bar working pressures in sizes ranging from 1050 (42”) to 2500 (98”). Designed specifically for filter bed depths of 1-metre (SMD) and 1.2-metres (SMDD), Waterco’s new commercial range provides enhanced in-depth filtration and increased dirt capacity, resulting in crystal clear, sparkling clean pool water. The SMD comes with the benefits of quick connect unions while the SMDD’s includes 8 bolt flange bulkheads. Both models are available with both metric and imperial connections. Both models are available with either the patented nozzle plate filter or Waterco’s famous ‘fish tail’ lateral arrangement. Waterco Europe 01795 521 733 www.waterco.eu
Poolview Plus+ A Winner At Elevate Innovation Awards The hotly contested Elevate Innovation Award winners were announced recently on the first day of the UK’s largest cross sector event focused on tackling physical inactivity. The inaugural awards were judged by a specialist panel made up of 20 expert industry professionals and influential fitness bloggers. The judges had the unenviable task of identifying the best products and services designed to get the nation moving, linking to key themes for Elevate – inclusivity, performance, health and wellbeing and business. The five awards categories were assessed by an interactive judging process, with the expert panel walking the floor on the
first day of the show and scoring entries against a set criteria. Plaques were awarded to each of the winners during an evening drinks reception. Amongst the winners were swimming pool safety company Poolview Limited, with their Poolview Plus+ product receiving the prize for Best Facility Innovation. The product is the result of the company’s collaboration with SwimEye™ to produce the world’s first proactive and reactive computer vision system for the detection of possible drowning incidents in swimming pools. TEMPORARY POOL GIVEN GREEN LIGHT IN ANDOVER Plans to plug a two-year gap in swimming facilities in Andover are underway after councillors gave the go-ahead on proposals for a temporary pool. The pool is expected to be in place and running before September which wil mean the town will have been without a public swimming facility for five months. This follows the closure of Andover Leisure Centre’s pool at the beginning of April. The 25-metre pool is expected to remain until a new pool at Andover Leisure Centre is up and running.

Upgraded Outdoor Pool Facilities For Campsie Glen Holiday Park Campsie Glen Holiday Park in Fintry, Stirlingshire, part of the Wood Leisure partnership, has had its outdoor heated swimming pool facilities ugraded. The £80,000 development was launched in April and incorporates a new enclosure, installation of changing rooms and toilets, floor resurfacing and adding a brand new baby pool heated to 30°C for its younger customers. Bruce Thomson, Operations Manager at Wood Leisure, commented: “We are committed to investing in our parks and facilities to deliver value to the families from Scotland and beyond. This significant investment supports our long-term growth and development plans while benefiting our customers, wider community and Scottish economy.” The new Endless Summer enclosure in Moss Green is an aluminium and acrylic structure that offers both safety by taking away the danger of broken glass, and functionality by sheltering the pool area from cold drafts and making it more weatherproof. The new baby pool is 2.5m x 4m and 600mm deep. The pool was supplied and installed by South
Lanarkshire’s Eagle Leisure, a reputable specialist in wet leisure services with 27 years of experience. Both swimming pools run on energy efficient air-source heating system contributing to the environment-conserving focus of the park. In 2015 the park successfully installed a biomass district heating system, the first community owned biomass district heating system for park homes in the UK. It supplies 26 residential homes and bar/bistro with heating and hot water and has cut down carbon emissions by 112 tonnes a year. The announcement of the upgraded swimming pool on Campsie Glen Facebook page has produced an astonishing effect. Just in four days the post reached over 9,000 people, received hundreds of reactions, shares and comments filled with excitement. Victoria Baths held an historic swim in its Gala pool on 14 May, the first in 24 years, in a one off event that has shown the huge appetite there is across the nation for one of the country’s leading heritage restoration projects. Gill Wright, Project Development Manager for Victoria Baths, said: “This was the most wonderful day Victoria Baths has known since its closure in 1993. We knew it would be a special event, but seeing the pool filled with people joyfully experiencing the opportunity to swim in this stunning setting, even though it was just for one day, it surpassed our expectations. “From the moment that the tickets went on sale, the interest has been phenomenal with the historic public swim becoming the hot topic on everyone’s lips. What’s been clear throughout is the love there is for this building and the shared passion there is for securing its future, and being able to use Victoria Baths for swimming.” It was an occasion that enabled people to relive memories and, for those whose visit to the Grade II* Baths was for the first time, to

Wet Leisure Survey Goes Digital What are the most important industry trends? How do your competitors advertise? What is the biggest growth area in the market? How does the industry expect business conditions to be next year? The answers to all these questions, and many more, can be found on new website wetleisure.com, the industry’s only market intelligence launched by Golden Coast, one of the UK’s leading distributors. This online portal is home to the results of the company’s annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey, which was launched in 2011, with support from the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF). The 2016 survey, which is
10 June 2017 SPN 10_SPN_June_17_News_General.indd 10
available now to view on the site alongside previous years’ results, offers full analysis and identifies key trends. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams added: “With six years of data and analysis in one location, we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for those working in our industry to get a feel for how the industry and its customers are changing.” He continued: “For example, the outdoor above-ground pool has always been a tried-andtested entry level staple. But, in our 2016 survey, for the first time, we’re seeing the number of new installations decline. At the same time, we’re seeing growth in the numbers of new swim spas.
“With this in mind, as an industry, should we be doing more to seize this opportunity by promoting and informing potential customers about smaller, smarter designs?” Jamie added: “As the new home for the survey, www. wetleisure.com provides valuable market intelligence at the click of a button. This means that our industry has the information available to make decisions that will strengthen its future. “It’s just one of the ways we support our customers, as well
as the wider industry: By arming them with the knowledge to spot opportunities, we equip them to respond to buying trends – allowing them to plan more successfully for the future.” Wet Leisure Industry Survey 01271 378100 www.wetleisure.com

Leyland-based World Leisure has appointed Andy Littler to the new role of Wellness Manager to launch a specialised wellbeing, steam and sauna division, operating throughout the UK. World Leisure provides a complete range of design, technical and installation services for the water leisure industry. Wellbeing, steam and sauna solutions have always been included in the company’s portfolio, but ever increasing demand has led to the launch of the new specialised division. Andy Littler has worked in the water leisure industry since 1997, when he attended the LIW (Leisure Industry Week) Show on the advice of a friend and said: “Even though I had only originally attended as a visitor, I ended up stepping in to build a show sauna with some borrowed tools from other tradesmen on site who were building other stands and displays, as the person commissioned to build the stand had walked off site due to a family emergency. “Based on that, I was offered my first industry job by the stand owner and became their preferred fitter. Shortly after, I formed my own company Eight Services, working for clients including Helo UK,
Jarvis Hotels and Village Hotels, for the wellness and gym areas. “As a fully qualified joiner, I have been a site agent and contracts manager on a wide variety of jobs. I am also a qualified IT Technician and have experience in Audio Visual, which also comes in useful occasionally in the wellness arena.” The new World Leisure Wellness division will work throughout the UK installing high quality climate-controlled environments and treatments rooms, including fully automatic rasul and serail mud treatments, Japanese salt steam rooms, Turkish hammams, and ice baths, for skin, respiratory and immune system health. Alpha’s Chaleur Lounge Wins Red Dot Award For Design After several days of judging, in which thousands of products from all over the world were assessed, the Chaleur Lounge from Alpha Industries emerged as one of a handful of entries to receive a much coveted Red Dot Award for Product Design 2017. With the Chaleur Lounge, the expert committee, which is made up of around 40 independent judges, found that the company had created an outstanding design, and recognised it with the internationally sought after seal of quality. With the Chaleur Lounge, the task was to provide the total feeling of wellness and comfort into a limited space. Most infrared saunas require a straight siting position. On the drawing board, Alpha Industries experimented

to generate the maximum level of comfort to the experience. The main challenge to overcome was – how to incorporate in a lounger a fullspectrum infrared heater which followed and supported the anatomy of the human body? The research resulted in a registered patent. The full-spectrum infrared heater in an S-shape was born, which seamlessly follows the body’s anatomy. The next step was to control and adjust the intensity of the four infrared heaters. With the newly developed Alpha Adaptive Smart Control (AASC) unit, each can be set separately from 0 to 100% power. Therapy, lighting, temperature, intensity, music, fan rate and heart rate meter are all controlled by the AASC or via an App for smart devices. The Chaleur Lounge’s interior is finished in Cracked Old Oak plywood and exterior in Oak MDF. The ergonomically shaped lounger is produced with Red Cedar slats with leather padding around the special S-curve full-spectrum infrared heaters. Tests carried out by the University of Alberta have revealed surprisingly high urine levels in public pools and tubs. The recent study examined the extent to which people are urinating in public pools and hot tubs. Tracking an 830 kilolitre pool over a three-week period, it was discovered that 75 litres (the volume of a typical rubbish bin) of urine had passed into the water. Hot tubs fared no better – with levels even higher levels than the pools tested. One was found to be three times as bad as the worst pool. With 19% of adults admitting to urinating while swimming, proper chemical dosing is the only way to neutralise this and ensure that water is kept clean and hygienic. Automatic chemical dosing helps owners and managers do this effectively. While interest in this area is growing, some installers find it a challenge. Golden Coast has made it simpler with its new Crystal service. It’s a one-stop outsourcing solution for pool companies who don’t have in-house automatic dosing experts. Providing a truly comprehensive service – from survey and to recommendations right through to installation and maintenance – Crystal is an ideal way for pool companies to provide this much-requested service without having to expand their team or undergo extra training. Golden Coast’s Managing Director, Jamie Adams, said: “It can be a little shocking when you see the figures from this study, but with proper dosing and disinfection it shouldn’t be a problem for swimmers. “There’s been more demand for automatic dosing in recent years, and it’s understandable – having something that can stay on top of this problem for you is always going to be desirable to customers, and it makes for a great profit centre for companies. That’s why we created Crystal.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

New Heatstar Phoenix MP Offers Outstanding Levels Of Heat Recovery Pool installers can recommend the new Phoenix MP unit to their clients with absolute confidence. Why? Because the new Phoenix MP substantially exceeds UK Building Regulations legal requirements for pool heat recovery systems and because the Phoenix MP (Multi-Pass) system enhances the heat saved from expelled pool room air to over 95%.
The Phoenix MP is able to outperform alternative equipment formats because it combines two different technologies to achieve unrivalled heat recovery performance. The expelled warm room air is first passed through the dehumidifying heat pump to enable ‘active’ heat extraction and then through a large ‘Multi-
Pass’ twin heat recuperator arrangement, where remaining heat within the air is passively conducted via a series of adjoining plates directly to the incoming colder fresh air. The combined effect of utilising both the active heat extraction by the dehumidifying heat pump and the passive heat recovery of the recuperators can enhance the heat saved from the expelled air to over 95% dry and over 160% if also including allowance for latent recovery. To enhance heat recovery efficiency further, the Phoenix MP features two plate heat recuperators utilised in sequence. After the expelled room air is passed through and exits the first recuperator, it is then passed through a second separate recuperator where yet more heat is transferred to the incoming outside fresh air. This Multi-Pass arrangement can enhance heat recovery efficiency up to 95%. Each Phoenix MP unit is tailored to the precise individual requirements of the application, obviating the need to under or over size performance aspects or tolerate inappropriate equipment
room layout. Dehumidification rates, air flows and heating duties are all selected individually to give a completely balanced, highly effective system, operating at ideal efficiency. Therefore, whether the pool room is a large conservatory or a small basement, the Phoenix MP will always be the perfect uncompromised approach. The unit can be configured so that the position of the control panel, pipes, air-duct spigots and maintenance access can also all be orientated during manufacture to accommodate the ideal equipment room layout. Even special weatherproof models are available for external positioning. Ideal for all newly designed indoor swimming pools where a higher level of demand is anticipated, the Phoenix MP provides effective humidity control, active heat recovery, full rate fresh air and both air and pool water heating – all from a single easily installed unit. might not sound like a lot, but imagine a business that is spending £10,000 on heating a year, that’s £1,500 that could be used for so much more. “As a business, we know all about wanting to find ways to save money but this one seems like one of the easiest.” HydroChem has been one of the leading water treatment companies in the north for almost three decades, working with both business and residential clients on a range of services including chemical cleaning, disinfection, cooling tower systems management and risk assessment of Legionella and other bacterial issues. Catalina’s Exclusive HeatFlow™ Technology Energy Harvesting System Catalina Spas is already recognised as one of the spa industry’s leaders in providing unsurpassed energy efficiency and now their exclusive patent pending HeatFlow™ Technology makes their hot tubs even better! Catalina is the only manufacturer with an exclusive water manifold system that creates heat utilising friction which is created naturally when the water passes through the specially designed spa plumbing components. Their Friction Manifold creates up to 2°C every hour when the spa is in use or the spa pumps are operating on high speed. The water temperature in an uncovered hot tub can drop by 1°C every 20 minutes. Every time the spa is used, valuable energy is potentially, needlessly wasted because the heater will automatically begin heating the water back to the preprogrammed temperature. A spa could be wasting as much as 3 kWh to reach a preset temperature each time it is used! For a spa without the HeatFlow™ Technology, which is used six times a week, the wasted energy might cost as much as 80 kWh per month, or £10 based on the national average of 12p per kWh. So with HeatFlow™ Technology capturing and recycling the natural energy as it passes
26 June 2017 SPN 26_SPN_June_17_Hot_Tub_News.indd 26
through the spa during normal everyday use, it’s clear that Catalina spas are manufactured to optimise both energy and economic conservation. Owners can now relax in a HeatFlow™ equipped spa and when they get out, it is the exact same temperature as it was when they entered it – without the spa heater always having to operate. The Technology is designed to save unnecessary wear on spa components while saving a significant number of kWh per month. So owners can now enjoy a Catalina spa, without spending too much every time they use it! Aqua Design & Leisure 01980 611555 www.aquadesignandleisure.com
Setting Standards For The Hot Tub Industry BISHTA is delighted to announce that the European standard being developed for Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs is now available for public consultation! The number of the standard is EN 17125. The European standard is important, as the hot tub industry is setting the requirements it expects to be followed by companies working in the industry. Although not a Law, the standard will be expected to be followed in the countries in the European Union. The influence of European standards is likely to remain in the UK, even when BREXIT negotiations are completed. In terms of comments on the European standard, The British Standards Institution (BSI) have stated that they require any comments to be received by Monday 3 July in order to collate them in time for their deadline to send the comments by Thursday 3 August back to the relevant European Committee. A copy of the draft standard can be viewed online after a search for BS EN 17125 at https:// standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com Please note that when visiting the link, you will be prompted to log-in or to register with BSI. BISHTA members can submit their comments to the BISHTA office, rather than to the BSI if they prefer. The committee overseeing the development of this draft standard is from the Centre for European Norms (CEN), and it is Technical Committee (TC) 402 that has responsibility for the standard, particularly their Working Group (WG) 4 (or CEN TC 402 WG4, for short). BISHTA has been chairing this group since the outset and is very proud to have played its part in getting partners together to undertake this important work. The standard has been possible to draft due to a number of funding partners collaborating, and BISHTA is very grateful to these partners and also to the German Standards Body (DIN) for taking on the secretariat of the project to develop the standard. Golden Coast director Dominic Adams explained: “They really have all bases covered. While ‘standard mount’ lets you adjust the open cover height to your preference, the ‘undermount’ option lets you avoid drilling holes into the hot tub surround. There’s also a ‘hydraulic mount’ option available. It’s gas-spring-assisted for effortless opening and closing.” Designed with installers in mind, the new range allows for more efficient and trouble-free working. Dominic explained: “We were impressed by how quick and easy it was to fit. Its patented sliding mounting brackets, for example, make it virtually impossible to make a mistake. Installation
takes less than an hour and all you need is a drill, screwdriver and adjustable spanner.” Visionlift is another new addition to the Essentials Collection. Its unique design allows tub users uninterrupted 360-degree views without having a cover in the way. “It’s the perfect choice for tubs in scenic surroundings, such as holiday lets, where you want users to be able to take it all in,” added Dominic. Capacity Increased As Spaeuro Exceeds Targets Despite the uncertainty of Brexit. it’s been a great 12 months for Spaeuro who smashed through their 2016 target by producing over 5,000 spa covers. The company’s growth means they are now operating out of a 14,000sqft building and have invested in machinery which mirrors the cutting and sealing process of Core Covers, their US partners. A CNC profiler is linked to the CAD designer’s computer back at Core, and cuts any profile to match the vinyl skin produced at the Core factory. Staff at Spaeuro simply load the polystyrene blanks on the profile cutter and activate the cutting cycle, which eliminates any errors. A second machine, a 3.5m Heat Sealer, seals the protective wrap that encapsulates the polystyrene insulating inserts. Pre-set time and heat cycles ensure a high quality and consistent seal every time. With the new facilities, production capacity has increased dramatically, giving Spaeuro the capacity to produce up to 650 covers a month. The extra space and new machinery has been instrumental in keeping to the 4-5 week lead times promised to customers. Of the deliveries, 99.5% are on time due to Spaeuro’s operating procedures. Every order received is processed within one hour and Core Covers produce the ‘skin’ within 2 weeks. They are then airfreighted out of San Diego on a weekly basis which adds to the cost, but ensures short lead times. In the meantime the insulating inserts are cut and sealed, ready to be fitted to the skins when they arrive at Spaeuro. A new polyester fabric developed by Core is also available and was launched at Piscine Lyon last year. The new material is proving to be very popular with the large spa manufacturers in the USA and Spaeuro now supplies two European manufacturers with all their covers from the polyester. It looks good, is more modern than vinyl and performs really well in all environments. Polyester is the material of the future! Spaeuro 01443 437915 www.spaeuro.co.uk

First Phase Of Poland’s Largest Amusement Park Opens With Indoor Aqua Park Phase one of a new entertainment facility, Park of Poland, was completed recently with the opening of a huge indoor aqua park named ‘Waterworld’. Eventually, the overall facility will grow into the largest amusement park in not only Poland but all of Central and Eastern Europe. The first phase on its own is impressive enough, however. A giant all-glass enclosure wraps around the aqua park, which will cover 20 hectares (49 acres) and feature more than a dozen of Polin Waterparks’ signature waterslides. All waterslides have unique design and ride configuration specially designed for this amazing waterpark. A glass-panelled domed roof can slide open or closed to create a palm-tree-filled paradise no matter what the weather. The new park is being developed by Dutch company Global City Holdings from Rotterdam, in cooperation with strategic German partner Wund
Unternehmensgruppe based in Friedrichshafen, which will be responsible for managing the waterpark. Wund Unternehmensgruppe has significant experience with similar operations and currently operates four large water parks in Germany. Its best-known facility is Therme Erding, Europe’s largest indoor swimming pool with a removable roof. Global City Holdings is making the Park of Poland project one of its highest priorities and expects the facility to create a new industry in Poland and employ 1,100 people. Polin Waterparks is proud to be the waterpark supplier of Waterworld’s entertainment offerings. More than 15 different signature waterslides will fill the facility, in addition to a tropical pool and large spa and wellness centre. With a budget of €180m, the Park of Poland is being designed to appeal to clients of all ages and the park, which is located near the city of Mszczonów, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Warsaw, will be open all year. In its first year, the facility is expected to attract one million guests. Polin Waterparks +90 262 656 6467 www.polin.com.tr
Water Safety USA Announces 2017 Messaging Water Safety USA, a consortium of 14 national governmental and non-governmental organisations, announces the 2017 water safety message: “Designate a water watcher – supervision could save a life”. The alliance of water safety organisations agrees that designating a water watcher when in, on, or around water can help prevent tragedy, especially during the summer months. All parents and guardians can benefit by designating a water watcher who takes on the role of ensuring that all children and adolescents swimming or playing in, on, or around water are continually supervised, even if they know how to swim. “Designating a single person, who is without distractions, is much more likely to ensure safety,” said Tina Dessart, the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash Programme Director. An appropriate water watcher is someone who: • is 16 years old or older (adults preferred) • is alert and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs • has the skills, knowledge and ability to recognise and rescue someone in distress OR can immediately alert a capable adult nearby • knows CPR or can alert someone nearby who knows CPR
• has a working phone to dial 9-1-1 • has a floating and/or reaching object that can be used in a rescue. The public should be aware that a water watcher is not a substitute for a lifeguard. Adults should choose a lifeguard-protected area, but always designate a water watcher, as drowning can even happen in the presence of lifeguards. In many cases, drowning happens quickly and quietly. Most fatal drownings happen when there is poor or absent supervision. Water Safety USA +1 619 807 7777 www.watersafetyusa.org

Certikin Staff Czech Out Impressive NIVEKO Factory Certikin’s newly appointed Sales Manager for Portable Spas, Enclosures & One Piece Pools, David Steptoe and Sales Director, Richard Way recently paid a visit to the impressive NIVEKO one-piece pool factory in the Czech Republic. They were welcomed by NIVEKO’s CEO, Simon Janca and Export Manager, Martin Machala. The trip consisted of technical, sales and marketing training on the company’s vast range of one-piece pools, (Left to right) Martin Machala, Richard Way, Simon Janca and David Steptoe at the NIVEKO factory
including the Whisper, designed to be the only virtually silent overflow one-piece pool on the market. David said: “I was very impressed with how easy the pools are to install and how well thought out the design process is. They have a beautiful sleek design. The product’s superior finish and quality was really apparent when we were shown the manufacturing process, which uses sheets of Polystone made in Germany specifically for NIVEKO pools which are heat welded together to form the pool walls and floor. Every pool is pre-plumbed and all fittings and pipework are pressure tested before leaving the factory. The pools can be built in sections too which means that they can be delivered to sites with restricted access. Delivery can be within just six weeks from date of order.” David added: “The visit was very beneficial
STA Sign Partnership With Chinese Association STA has signed a partnership agreement with the newly-formed China International Swimming Teachers’ Association (CISTA), which has been set up with the support of the Government to educate and promote professional standards of swimming through training and development across the People’s Republic of China. As a result of the government ending its one-child policy in 2015 – and the subsequent baby boom – demand for baby and children’s swimming lessons is growing significantly in China. Consequently, new facilities and new swim schools are being built all over the country to cope with demand, leading to an influx of new training opportunities for swimming teachers and lifeguards. To facilitate this development, CISTA has been created to take the lead on promoting standards in China. Through its partnership with STA, CISTA will follow UK standards in terms of delivering recognised qualifications for swimming teachers, lifeguards, first aiders and pool plant management. Anita Sharma, CDO at CISTA said: “We are absolutely delighted and extremely excited to have signed a partnership agreement with STA UK. Their support and expertise will greatly help us achieve our

aim of providing quality international training for the people of China.” “We want to provide world class training facilities and ensure that resources are available for the renewal of qualifications and ongoing professional development – we want CISTA to be an organisation which everyone involved in swimming provision can turn to at any time for advice or help,” added Anita. To achieve this mission at this significant time in China’s swimming history, CISTA will be offering the full spectrum of STA’s qualifications. All courses will be delivered by ‘locally’ trained STA tutors and supported with bi-lingual resource manuals. CISTA will also offer bespoke consultancy services for new swim school start-ups and for existing businesses who want to boost or improve their aquatic programmes. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
Developing Standards And Education For Continued Industry Success
S
o much has been happening this year, the time is certainly flying by! In terms of European standards, there are proposed revisions to some of the standards for domestic pool construction and installation (the EN 16582 series) and also to the domestic pool water filtration, circulation and treatment standards (the EN 16713 series). The comments will be discussed at the relevant SPATA Technical Committee and will also be shared with BSI colleagues before the next meeting of the relevant CEN Technical Committee (TC 402) planned for Helsinki on 5 September. The domestic spa and hot tub standard (EN 17125) is now available for public consultation (called a ‘CEN Public Enquiry’), and the industry has until 3 August to make any comments known to BISHTA and/or the BSI. The next meeting of the Working Group that is developing this standard (TC 402 WG4) is planned for 12 – 14 September in Berlin. After the EN 17125 standard is finished, this is due to be the last of the planned standards being undertaken by TC 402 for the next couple of years. However, there is plenty to keep the industry ‘on its toes’ regarding European standards as there are commercial (public) pool standards to be revised for swimming pool equipment (the EN 13451 series) and the design and operation of (commercial) swimming pools (the EN 15288 series). Still, on a European theme, some of the British Pool & Hot Tub award winners will be shortlisted to represent the UK at the 2017 EUSA European Pool & Spa Awards. These awards are to be presented at SPATEX 2018, as part of the Industry Gala Dinner featuring the British Pool & Hot Tub awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards. The list of companies shortlisted is expected to be named
After a busy start to the year, there’s no let up for the Industry’s associations and BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks at what the next few months hold in the next issue of SPN, so good luck to all of our entries at this year’s EUSA Awards. Talking of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, the 2018 edition will be opening soon for BISHTA and SPATA members to enter (forms will be available online). Please make sure that you enter to give your company a great chance of a promotional opportunity. On to other matters, and the value of education and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) continues to be of significant importance. The ISPE have been working with SPATA and the wider industry to get more courses for the swimming pool trade and BISHTA has been playing its part with a number of courses. I am delighted to report that Certikin International have recently held the first of the heat pump courses and a group of liner manufacturers representing Aquaflex, Certikin International and Plastica are currently developing an industry course to provide information on liners that should be available in the autumn / winter. With the summer now upon us, it is time for our industry to play its part in promoting Swimming Awareness and Drowning Prevention. Many wet leisure organisations are working to promote awareness of the number of accidental drownings that happen every year in the UK. In this issue, there is more information about swimming safety and Drowning Prevention Week from the parents of a little boy who drowned in the family pool. From this tragic incident has come hope with the formation of a charity to honour Jack Rowe (called Jack-Rabbit), please read it to see how you may be able to help. I hope that you also enjoy the articles from Geoff Cronshaw (The IET) and Michael

It is great to have the input from these industry partners. There is also an article summarising the changes in HSG 282 that is worth reading if you are involved in hot tubs in holiday lodges (business settings). Finally, BISHTA and SPATA members will also benefit from their respective annual conferences, so please pencil the relevant date(s) into your diary that are planned this autumn. For BISHTA, it is Wednesday 4 October, and for SPATA, it is Thursday 5 October. Full details of the programme for both days will be shared via the weekly e-newsletters, and the venue will again be in Andover. It is hoped to have an update on the progress of the joint work with APSP, not only in terms of hot tub qualifications, but also other ways of working together (not just between Europe and North America, but further around the world). Domestic Electrical Supplies To Hot Tubs As Chief Electrical Engineer and Secretary of JPEL 64, the National Wiring Regulations Committee, Geoff Cronshaw looks at electrical supplies to hot tubs and considers the requirements of Part P of the Building Regulations for domestic electrical work carried out in England
I
n this article, which originally appeared in The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) magazine ‘Wiring Matters’, Geoff Cronshaw takes a brief look at the requirements for electrical supplies to hot tubs in England under Part P of the Building Regulations for domestic electrical work. (Contact information on the requirements of the Building Regulations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are provided at the end of this article.)
route cables where they are not likely to be disturbed or damaged, for example, around the edge of the plot and at sufficient depth. Buried cable routes should be identified by local route markers and recorded on drawings. Cables should be buried at least 500 mm below the lowest local ground level, and a route marker tape laid along the cable route about 150 mm below the surface (NOTE: BS EN 61386-24 is the standard for underground conduits).
certificated by: • a member of a competent person selfcertification scheme; or • (before work begins) an installer who is not a registered competent person may appoint a registered third party certifier to inspect and test the work; or • (before work begins) the work must be notified to the local authority, which will then be responsible for inspecting and testing it for electrical safety.
GENERAL
ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS TO AN EXISTING INSTALLATION
The building control body will determine the extent of inspection and testing needed for it to be established that the work is safe, based on the type of work and competence of the installer. This may affect the fee payable to building control. Where notifiable work is certificated by an installer who is member of a competent person self-certification scheme, the installer or the installer’s registration body must give a copy of the Building Regulations compliance certificate to the occupier and the certificate or a copy of the information on the certificate to the building control body. Where certification is by a registered third party (subject to inspection and testing being satisfactory), the third party certifier should then issue a condition report to the person ordering the work. The registration body of the third party certifier must give a copy of the Building Regulations compliance certificate to the occupier and the certificate or a copy of the information on the certificate to the building control body. Where an installer is not a registered competent person and has not appointed a registered third party certifier (before work begins), the installer must notify a building control body. All work, whether it is notifiable or nonnotifiable, should be designed, installed, inspected, tested and certified in accordance with BS 7671.
All electrical work should comply with BS 7671. There are no specific requirements for electrical installations associated with hot tubs in BS 7671. However, where a hot tub is located outdoors in the open air, for example, a garden, IET Guidance Note 7 Special Locations recommends that the requirements of Section 702 (swimming pools and other basins) should be applied. The requirements for swimming pools are given in Section 702 of BS 7671:2008+A3:2015. IET Guidance Note 7 also sets out the risks. Persons involved in the design of the electrical installation for a hot tub should consult the product standard BS EN 60335-2-60: Specification for Safety of household and similar appliances: Particular requirements for whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas.
SUPPLY The supply to the hot tub should be protected by a 30 mA RCD. The cable must also be suitably protected along its route. Regulation 522.8.10 sets out the requirements for buried cables. Cables should be protected against foreseeable damage, either by armouring or by suitable enclosure. Unprotected cables should not be buried directly in the ground, nor should they be clipped to wooden fences, etc., as such an arrangement may provide inadequate support and protection. Problems arise when ground levels are either lowered so that cables have insufficient cover, or raised so that cables that were not intended to be buried and are not suitable for burial become buried. Such problems can arise during the course of a project, and the intended ground level should be formally ascertained before the cables are installed. It must be remembered that the layout of a garden can be changed totally within a few seasons and great care must be taken to
38 June 2017 SPN 38_SPN_June_17_BSPF.indd 38
Where work is being carried out to an existing installation, Regulation 132.16 requires that the rating and condition of existing equipment, including that of the distributor, should be adequate for the additional load and that the existing earthing and bonding arrangements are also adequate.
INSPECTION, TESTING AND CERTIFICATION Inspection and testing must be performed to confirm the adequacy of the relevant parts of the existing installation that will support the changed requirements, the upgrading of the existing installation necessary to support the addition or alteration, and the addition or alteration itself. The requirements for initial verification are contained in Part 6 of BS 7671 and further information on the requirements for inspection and testing is given in Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing. Compliance with BS 7671 must be verified for every addition or alteration. Requirements for certification and reporting in respect of electrical installations are also given in Part 6. An Electrical Installation Certificate must be provided to the person ordering the work and should give the details of the extent of the installation covered by the certificate, together with a record of the inspection and the results of the testing.
PART P OF THE BUILDING REGULATIONS Anyone carrying out domestic electrical installation work in England must carry it out in line with Part P of the Building Regulations. Where work is notifiable (new circuits, the replacement of a consumer unit, and any addition or alteration to an existing circuit in a special location) it must be
PLEASE NOTE: This article is only a brief overview of the topic. For more information please refer to BS 7671:2008+A3:2015 and the manufacturer of the hot tub. HSG 282 – A Summary In this edition of SPN, we take a look at the latest Health & Safety Guidance (HSG) 282: The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems
T
his introduction to HSG 282 is an attempt to summarise the new online only advice from the Heath & Safety Executive (HSE) which was designed to supersede the old Management of Spa Pools publication from 2006. (Please note that some errors that occurred in the first version in January 2017 have been corrected, so please make ensure that you are using the current version which is marked 05/17 on page 62.) Although HSG 282 supersedes the former Management of Spa Pools book, certain items such as Guidance on the taking of water samples have been omitted, so do not throw away your old Management of Spa Pools publication yet. Readers of this article are recommended to read HSG 282 in full, and the relevant web link is included towards the end of this article. As HSG 282 provides key information about the requirements and expectations of those people responsible for managing spa pools (including those involved in supplying the spa pool systems), it is vital for dutyholders (those managing spa pools) and everyone connected to the supply of goods and services for commercial spas (typically found in leisure centres or hotels) and the domestic-type spa pools (hot tubs) used as part of a business activity. It is important to ensure that the right type of spa or hot tub is used in the correct setting. HSG 282 should be read in conjunction with other advice on Legionnaires’ disease, covered in HSG 274 and L8, the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) on Legionnaires’ disease, both of which are freely available on the internet. The importance of having competent people involved in managing the spa pool is highlighted and the use of a risk assessment, supported by an effective Pool Safety Operating Procedure (PSOP) comprising a Normal Operating Plan (NOP) and an Emergency Action Plan (EAP). The NOP sets out the way the system operates on a daily basis (including a schematic diagram of the spa / hot tub), while the EAP clearly sets out what steps to take in the event of an emergency. Advice is given that the Risk Assessment must be written where there are five or more employees. The careful reading of HSG 282 is required to determine which sections relate to commercial spas and which sections refer to ‘business use’ of domestic hot tubs. The ‘business use’ of hot tubs is growing in

Health and Safety Executive
The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems Spa-pool systems are a recognised source of diseases caused by infectious agents including the organism that causes legionnaires’ disease, primarily Legionella pneumophila. There have been a number of outbreaks linked to spa pools in leisure centres, hotels, holiday homes, on cruise ships and on display. This guidance is primarily for those who manage or operate spa-pool systems and explains how to manage and control the risks from legionella and other infectious agents. It will also help service suppliers, designers, manufacturers, importers, suppliers and installers of spa-pool systems meet their legal responsibilities. HSG282 Published 2017
As well as guidance on operating and maintaining commercial-type systems, there is specific advice on domestic-type spa pools or hot tubs used as part of a business activity, for example in holiday park rental units, hotel bedrooms with a dedicated spa and systems on display or at exhibitions. The guide includes advice on effective ways to safely manage and control spa-pool systems through:
design, commissioning, operation and maintenance; testing and monitoring spa-pool water quality; quality and frequency of inspections.

importance with the boom in holiday parks offering hot tubs as part of the package. The important element is that the hot tub is used exclusively by a single family (or group) during any single letting period. HSG 282 makes it clear that the owners of a holiday park site do have a legal duty imposed on them, so it is these private owners of Lodges who will need to follow any guidance issued by the site owner. The HSW Act does not apply to domestic or privately owned spas where there is no financial gain and so is outside the scope of HSG 282. Commercial-type spa pools are typically designed for higher bather loads than business use of a hot tub, and they typically have a deck-level overflow, greater number of bathers, a separate filter and continuous chemical dosing system with automatic control, and a balance tank and plantroom. In terms of a hot tub used for ‘business
activity’, it is possible that the usage will be very light, with a couple of people using the hot tub for less than an hour per day, but of course the next group of users may be a larger party who stay in the hot tub all evening (despite advice limiting the use of the hot tub to a shorter period) hence the guidance for using some form of inline sanitiser to maintain the residual levels of chlorine or bromine. The Guidance states that the water should be replaced in a hot tub used for business activity each week, or after each group of users. HSE specifies the importance of having at least twice daily water testing for chlorine/ bromine and pH and monthly microbiological testing of water (including quarterly for Legionella). Table 3 (on page 45 of the Guidance) gives the chemical parameters and actions required when the sps (spa-pool system) is outside the typical pH range of 7.0 to 7.6, or when the chlorine is outside the typical range of 3 - 5 mg/l for chlorine, or 4 - 6 mg/l for bromine. There is also advice when the combined chlorine is >1 mg/ or when the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is greater than 1,000 mg/l higher than the incoming fill water. The various microbiological tests to be carried out are outlined, and Table 4 (on page 49 of the Guidance) sets out the appropriate actions to take, subject to the microbiological results found. Readers of this article are advised to download a free copy of HSG 282 and to read the Guidance in full (and not to rely on this summary alone) via www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ books/hsg282.htm Please remember that the HSE may from time to time update the Guidance, so please make sure you check their website regularly for any newer versions. Please also note that PWTAG has indicated an intention to produce more detailed advice for hot tubs in early in 2018.
The careful reading of HSG 282 is required to determine which sections relate to commercial spas and which sections refer to ‘business use’ of domestic hot tubs. The ‘business use’ of hot tubs is growing in importance with the boom in holiday parks offering hot tubs as part of the package” SPN June 2017 39 28/05/2017 17:56

Providing Our Children With The Skills To Survive And Enjoy Water Safely! Following a tragic accident in which their son, threeyear old Jack died, parents Nigel and Olivia Rowe decided to set-up the Jack-Rabbit Foundation, a charity aimed at promoting water safety awareness and a survival technique for infants in the UK. In Nigel’s own words, this is their story
L
ife for so many of us can be very ordinary, wonderfully ordinary of course. We were that family in the summer of 2014. But on the 9 July, everything changed. On his third birthday, our son Jack walked off, slipped into a swimming pool and drowned. Without Jack, our ordinary lives changed. For his sister, two brothers and for us his parents. What had started, that morning as a simple working Wednesday – with a late start, birthday presents and time together before we carried on a normal day – ended in rupture and desolation in the screaming silence of Southampton hospital. In the weeks that followed, we were introspective. Why did we leave him with someone else, how could this happen and what do we do now… too late. Olivia however, remembered a story of infants and toddlers learning a water survival technique which now came rushing back to her. In that moment she became single minded WATER SAFETY AWARENESS EVENTS Learn To Swim Week 10 – 16 June Based on the STA’s charitable objective, ‘The preservation of human life by the teaching of swimming, lifesaving and survival techniques’, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of being able to swim and the enjoyment it can bring. www.sta.co.uk/events/learn-to-swim-week Drowning Prevention Week 16 – 26 June By spreading water safety advice far and wide, Drowning Prevention Week aims to teach people how to stay safe near water. The campaign encourages schools, clubs, leisure centres and communities to promote water safety through events, lessons, games and activities in a bid to make people more aware of the dangers of water. www.rlss.org.uk/water-safety/drowningprevention-week

that this survival technique, commonplace in the US, but not taught anywhere here, should be brought to the UK, and the awareness of water safety for infants be raised to a higher level. Jack had been nick-named by his sister, Ella, ‘Jack-Rabbit’ and so together we setup the Jack-Rabbit Foundation with the aim of dealing with both of these items by starting and then spreading the teaching of this technique across the country. With the primary directives of the charity easily set, we did two things. First, to set the charity vehicle up within the rules and regulations of the PRISM Fund, an established and recognised charity organisation and second, to support the name with an identifiable logo. The logo was designed as part of a St Francis School (where Ella and Jack went to nursery/ school) competition with the winning entry from one of the pupils. We have been very fortunate in the support from the school, friends, family and beyond. In the nearly three years since we started, albeit slowly at first, we have raised a good sum of money with multiple events from bike rides and dinners, to school kite flying, individual sponsored events to one property industry group (the Industrial Agents Society) adopting Jack-Rabbit as their 2016 charity. That has allowed Olivia and friend local swim coach Jo Borthwick, to go to Orlando, Florida to attend a course at South West Aquatics and train as teachers in the technique. February is a short month but long enough for two mothers to be away, physically and emotionally in a new world. In our lives that had seemingly turned so dark, Olivia and I have been very fortunate, and in September 2015 we were blessed with the birth of our son Zander. A miracle if ever there was one. So Zander, then 17 months old, travelled with Olivia as did Jo’s children, 5 year old Tom and 3 year old Lily – each being offered the chance to become ‘guinea pigs’ in their learning. In those four weeks, something special happened. Not least the learning of the
extraordinary teachings of proprietor Joy McGinty and her daughter Maureen, but rather the discovery for Olivia, Jo and all of us. A Eureka moment, if you forgive the pun, because, making all this happen had been Olivia’s drive with Jo’s swim teaching expertise. But for both of them, there has been a revelation of the special closeness of being in a pool with these many, very young children (aged 6 months to 5 years), the bond that the danger of water brings, from trust, discipline, care and endeavour. Ten minutes per child per week day morning for four weeks does this, and for Olivia, the realisation is that this is to be her vocation, her future and her fulfillment. Zander, Tom and Lily can save their own lives now if the worst happens and so many more young lives will now have that same chance. A return to the UK on the 4 March was immediately followed by the start of their first course at the Help for Hero’s pool at Tedworth House just two days later. More pools and more courses are planned with the Foundation looking to support more opportunities across the UK. The vision going forward is to build a facility similar to the Orlando training centre here in the South West to offer both courses and training. We are looking for sponsors and donations to help us achieve our goal. If you’d like further information, please go to our website at www. thejackrabbitfoundation.com where you can find out more about the Foundation.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
Running Out Of Time For Payment In an industry where maintaining good cash flow is essential, Michael Hiscock, a Partner and member of the Construction and Engineering Team at commercial law firm Wright Hassall, takes a look at payment schedules and a potential issue for the unwary
I
n an industry where being paid late or receiving a lower amount than expected may mean the difference between surviving or not, it is sensible commercial practice to agree in advance when you are going to be paid. That will allow resource planning, job budgeting and happy staff. If you undertake major commercial work for a non-residential client, and your job lasts 45 days or more, then the law gives you a right to claim interim payments. So for example if you take on a job to build a swimming pool and leisure facilities for a hotel or sports club, then you may be asked to agree a payment plan – a schedule of dates defining when you are permitted to apply for payment. All sounds good so far. You have transparency of payment structures which allows you to implement a financial management plan and incorporate it into next year’s business plan. Two other useful legal rules also help you maintain cash flow from your client. First if you formally apply for interim payment in documents which show how much and why, and your client does not serve a counter notice justifying a lower payment, then your application could be the sum due. Secondly, on an interim basis, the courts are on the side of the payee – so you can argue about the real cost at the end of the job, but interim instalments must be honoured (so the payer can’t cover up his admin error by proving actual cost).
However the Court of Appeal has confirmed that there is a trap for the unwary in this structure. The legal requirements for the payment clauses in this type of contract are that it contains an ‘adequate mechanism for payment’ – namely a contractual system for assessing when payments become due, how much is due and when that sum is finally payable. Without this adequate mechanism for payment, the law inserts a compulsory set of terms, creating a 24 day payment cycle. The JCT suite of contracts complies with this by allowing a choice of rolling monthly payments or milestone payments. The problem comes when clients want more certainty.
In an industry where being paid late or receiving a lower amount than expected may mean the difference between surviving or not, it is sensible commercial practice to agree in advance when you are going to be paid”
Mansell (now Balfour Beatty Regional) signed a JCT Design and Build 2011 contract with Grove Developments for a £120m job to design and construct a hotel and services apartments near the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London. It was a fully negotiated contract under which the parties selected the JCT stage payment option, agreed and inserted 23 interim payment dates running up to the date of anticipated practical completion. The job ran late, Balfour Beatty issued interim application 24, Grove refused to pay, and a dispute arose. The court said that there was no contractual right for Balfour Beatty to claim that money. The payment clause was adequate and so complied with the Act. There was no justification to imply a term to give extra monthly interims, the contract was clear and understandable without the need for any other interpretation. Balfour Beatty had to provide the finance for the rest of the job themselves, up to actual practical completion, and then claim the rest of their money in the final account process. The court commented that Balfour Beatty had been unwise and could have negotiated a protective position and had to wait for its money until the end. In other words – if two parties reach a commercial deal with specific payment terms, the courts are reluctant to change the bargain even if it is a bad bargain. So what are the practical implications? Don’t use payment schedules, but if you want to do so, either add lots of extra interim payment dates just in case, or add a sentence that confirms both parties agreement that in the absence of any available dates, the parties agree that the interim payment structure continues onto a rolling weekly / fortnightly / monthly system (to suit your job). Also bear in mind the ‘battle of the forms’ – a legal test to decide whose contract applies. So if you submit a quote using your terms, but then you receive what looks like an acceptance giving you a start date, but contains a set of terms and conditions issued by your client, then unless you object to those and/or issue your terms again, then the last document on the table creates the contract. TURBIDITY
The Clarity Of Pool Water Cloudy swimming pool water is caused by tiny suspended particles within it. Known as turbidity, it can be an issue for both public and domestic pools alike and this issue, experts from pool water testing company Lovibond Tintometer highlight the importance of measuring it
N
o one would disagree that cloudy pool water is undesired. It can have a serious detrimental effect on swimmer safety. It also makes lane markings and items on the pool bottom difficult to see. Impairing the visibility of the pool floor is particularly dangerous if a bather gets into difficulties. According to the National Water Safety Forum, on average, around 400 people tragically drown around the UK every year. Obviously, these numbers include accidents in rivers, lakes and the sea, but there is a significant risk of potential drowning in pools especially for children not yet competent in swimming skills. A struggling swimmer can quickly go under water. It is essential that the lifeguard on duty is able to take appropriate, immediate action. Every second counts for successful rescue, intervention and resuscitation. Cloudy or hazy water is caused by suspended particles that are usually invisible to the naked eye. These impurities are introduced from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, air debris, dirt, pollen, algae, cosmetics and microbial organisms. Unsurprisingly, some of the main contributors to these impurities are bathers
Cloudiness is caused by a rise in turbidity of the pool water. To ensure that the pool is safe, this turbidity must be measured on a regular basis”
and source water. Cloudiness is caused by a rise in turbidity of the pool water. To ensure that the pool is safe, this turbidity must be measured on a regular basis. This is particularly true in the case of public pools although even domestic pool owners should be aware of the potential consequences. In the UK, there are no formal standards for water quality in the swimming pool industry. However, the widely acknowledged PWTAG guidelines suggest the turbidity of pool water should be no greater than 0.5 NTU (Nephlometric Turbidity Units). How many of us, however, really take this seriously? PWTAG also recommends that Turbidity should be measured using a nephelometer, more commonly referred to as a turbidimeter. A turbidimeter is an electronic device which uses the principle that light passing through a substance is reflected or scattered by particulate matter suspended in the substance. Unlike electronic photometers which are commonly used to measure disinfection and pH levels, Turbidity meters simply measure the optical properties of the pool water and do not require any additional reagents. As the image on this page shows, it is difficult for the human eye to distinguish NTU levels below 20, so an electronic device is essential to measure accurately to the PWTAG recommendation. Yet how many pool operators still use the guideline ‘if you can see the bottom of the pool, everything is OK’? And is this really sufficient? Monitoring the turbidity of the pool water is not only essential for bather safety but can also indicate other problems within the pool water chemistry such as inadequate chlorine or, incorrect pH levels. It can also indicate a
change in filtration performance. So why does the turbidity of a pool increase? Poor pool water chemistry – if the chlorine or pH levels are incorrect, the quality of the water will decrease rapidly and cause the turbidity to increase. Furthermore, poor water balance or an increase in levels of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and phosphate can affect the cloudiness of the pool. By strictly following best practice for Balanced Water (Langelier Index) and reacting quickly and accordingly, the risk of too turbid water can be greatly reduced, though levels should still be measured. Increased levels in turbidity can also provide an indication of background levels of cryptosporidium though further specific microbiological analysis should be carried out. Filtration problems – today, there are numerous types of various filtration media available including traditional sand, glass and plastic based products all of which claim to reduce the water turbidity. Regulated pump running times and regular filter maintenance will increase effectiveness. However, how do we know they work if the turbidity levels are not being monitored? An increase in turbidity can indicate filter problems including dirty filters, a poor back washing regime or problems with flow rates and sizing. Regular monitoring of turbidity is, therefore, essential: for bather safety; assurance that you are meeting the current guidelines; as an aid to identify problems with water quality before they become too severe; to ensure the filtration set is correct and running efficiently. Lovibond Tintometer 01980 664800 www.lovibond.com “Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality.” Source: Wikipedia

STA POOL PLANT – PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA BACTERIUM: PART TWO
The Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Bacterium In the last issue of SPN, Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Expert, shared his knowledge on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a growing problem for pool operators. Here, in the second part of the feature, he discusses prevention methods for this harmful and prolific bacterium
I
n recent years, pool operators across the UK have been experiencing Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) outbreaks at their facilities, in record numbers. Prevention is important, as it is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that is responsible for both acute and chronic infections. To prevent the uncontrolled growth of (P. aeruginosa), the following practices are recommended for pool plant operators: 1. Collect water samples from the pools and spas etc., monthly and have these analysed by an accredited laboratory (test for the recommended suite of bacteria). On an annual basis, take water samples and swabs from inside the filters, balance tanks, overflow channels, skimmers etc, for bacteriological water analysis. Act on the results if necessary. 2. Simple tests for Pseudomonas are available and can be done by the knowledgeable pool manager to supplement lab tests. 3. Pressure test the pool recirculation systems to make sure there are no suction side breaks in the lines which may be allowing dirt to enter the closed systems. 4. Institute rigorous poolside and shower area maintenance procedures. The purpose of cleaning decks is two–fold. Oil, grease, dirt, bacteria and organic debris must be removed through sweeping, rinsing, power washing, and scrubbing with an all purpose cleaner, detergent, or degreaser which is compatible with chlorinated pool water. But more importantly, decks
5.

must be disinfected to prevent bacterial growth, including P. aeruginosa, and the formation of a slippery biofilm layer. The best, and least expensive way to disinfect a pool deck, is to spray a 20 to 1 solution of water and sodium hypochlorite on the deck, and rinse with a high-pressure nozzle and hose. For clean–up of blood or bodily fluids, and to preventing transmission of blood borne pathogens, the surfaces, or any contaminated surface, should be cleaned with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite diluted to between 1:10 and 1:100 with water. This is equivalent to disinfecting with a 1:20 solution of 10–12% sodium hypochlorite (liquid pool chlorine). Clean and disinfect the decks on a nightly or at least twice weekly basis, depending on the level of facility use, and, immediately after any contamination with blood or bodily fluids. Attempt to keep patrons in street shoes off the poolside and where possible poolside/changing wet areas. Ensure both filters and balance tanks are inspected, particularly for biofilm contamination (yearly for pools and bi-annually for spas). Ensure appropriate treatment if required. Spa balance tanks should be subject to periodic rigorous physical and chemical cleansing (see STA PPO Manual). Require that infants and young children who are not yet toilet trained wear tight fitting rubber (neoprene) pants over swim diapers (double nappy system as recommended by STA) while in the pool. Aerosols on an inflatable are a possible source of infection
Institute rigorous poolside and shower area maintenance procedures to avoid problems such as contaminated gratings
44 June 2017 SPN 44_SPN_June_17_STA.indd 44
Also, ensure that adequate nappy change provisions are present and maintained at a high level of hygiene. 10. Shock spas daily and pools at least weekly where required, and/or per risk assessment or as needed if combined available chlorine levels exceed recommended levels. 11. Any shock dosing requires robust risk assessments and controls by competent persons. These assessments and controls apply to all staff and contractors involved. 12. Do not remove high levels of chlorine from the water with sodium thiosulphate, dilution is the best way from a freshwater source. Wherever possible let chlorine levels return to normal gradually after the breakpoint has been achieved. 13. Dilute the water regularly to control for TDS build up. This dilution will also control combined chlorine levels. If repeated high levels of Pseudomonas are found in the pool or other facilities, the following procedures should be followed: 1. Rinse pool circulation pipes, balance tanks and all circulation ancillary equipment with high levels of free chlorine, then where practical drain the spa, small pool etc. completely. It may be necessary to clean all practical sections physically. 2. If necessary, remove the sand or other filter media from the filter tanks, and either dispose of the media safely and hygienically or chemically cleanse the media. 3. Read the material safety data sheets (MSDS) before beginning work. And finally, all treatment and inspections should be carried out using robust risk assessments and controls, and be to recommended UK standards. For further information on the points discussed in both Pseudomonas aeruginosa articles, and for further advice on pool and spa plant training, call the STA, email them at sta@sta.co.uk or visit their website. A Pool With A View And The Midas Touch
Salcombe Estuary, Devon
N
ewton Abbot pool specialists, Westcountry Leisure, struck gold at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards 2017 with this magnificent pool in Devon. Built on the side of a cliff overlooking a bay in the Salcombe estuary, the pool is fully loaded with equipment from Certikin. The client, a keen swimmer, wanted a pool for all year round use with a deep swimming lane plus a shallow end for his children. The large linear pool had to sit within the confines of the area to the back of the house and embrace its mature and natural surroundings. Using a terrace where a large ornamental pond was sited, the pool is an impressive 22m x 5m and complements the surrounding architectural features. The pool required planning permission as it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the house is Grade II listed. The owners were keen to ensure the project did not have any detrimental impact on the existing building. Westcountry Leisure put together drawings and a specification to satisfy the local authority, which duly granted permission. Once the pool area had been excavated to the required depths, a structural engineer inspected it and, due to failure of the compaction

tests, further excavation was required. Managing Director of Westcountry Leisure, Mark Gilpin said: “Our initial survey was based upon a surface inspection of the site and even though we carried out two trial holes before commencement, the extra works didn’t become apparent until the majority of the dig had been carried out. It was certainly a challenging job and not one for those with a fear of heights!” Access to the site was completely restricted on three sides with only a small, single vehicular access possible between the trees. To improve access, Westcountry removed the existing retaining wall between the upper and lower terrace to enable the shuttered concrete pool to be constructed. The existing York stone terrace was carefully removed prior to excavation for recycling, to help the pool blend in. The stones, some of which weighed over 500kg each, were cleaned, sorted, re-cut and re-laid as coping stones, pit lids for the automatic cover chamber and cappings for a new stone-faced retaining wall constructed on top of and flush with the pool wall. The inside of the pool is lined with 1200mm x 600mm slate-

Hidden in a chamber when not in use, the cover features a Scuba drive in-roller motor and digital control. Westcountry cast a channel/safety ledge the length of each of the pool’s sides and for extra safety, there is an automated locking device at the far end of the pool, which holds the cover firmly in position. A pool plant room was created out of an existing summerhouse, to blend in with its surroundings, and includes Triton 36 inch side mount (32m3/hr) filter and Viron eVo variable speed pump. An oil fired boiler is used for mid-winter back-up to support two Calorex Propac heat pumps, operable from the owner’s mobile phone. Certikin also supplied an Autopilot digital salt chlorinator with pH control to maintain a free chlorine residual of 1ppm which was also used along with Anti-vortex main drains and six stainless steel eyeball inlets. In all, the project took 24 weeks to complete but the owners were delighted with the result which according to Westcountry’s Mark Gilpen “was the most technically challenging project we have undertaken”.

INTELLIGENT HEATING – THE INVERTER-PLUS HP FROM FAIRLOCKS POOL PRODUCTS A good way of expressing the difference between a Fairlocks Aqua-Inverter heat pump and other heat pumps is by using the vehicle analogy – do you want a top of the range Lexus that drives smoothly, cost effectively and efficiently or are you stuck in a time warp where the gas guzzling, bulky and dated 4x4 still has a place? The Inverter-plus HP from Fairlocks is the world’s first Full-inverter™ swimming pool heat pump. It features step less inverter powered by a Full-inverter™ compressor and a Full-inverter™ fan motor, which adjusts the compressor and fan speed. It matches the pool water heating needs intelligently with continuous and optimal efficiency. The Inverterplus HP adjusts the heating capacity from 25% to 100% automatically according to pool demand, but most of the time, it only runs at middle and low speed for maximum efficiency. When Fairlocks Inverter-plus runs at middle and low speeds to maintain the pool temperature, the compressor and fan run super quietly. Its average COP is 7.0 at Air 15°C/ Water 26°C/ Humidity 70% and 11.0 at Air 26°C/ Water 26°C/ Humidity 80% The range consists of four models covering 13kW – 36kW with all models operating

HOT TUBS IN A BUSINESS SETTING
Hot Tub Solutions For Holidays And More In-ground spas have been a familiar sight in a wide variety of leisure sector settings for a long time, but over recent years, it’s their hot tub cousins that have now become the latest must-have pieces of kit. From holiday park lodges to hotels and sports clubs and more – what was once often perceived as a novelty is now increasingly an essential and expected item for guests and members alike and we take a closer look at the options for various business settings By Jon Wadeson
N
o longer to be found only in domestic settings, hot tubs are now being found in a variety of other locations. Owners of sports clubs and leisure facilities have added them to their facilities for the active whilst proprietors of holiday lodges and cottage rentals have seen them as great additions to enhance a holiday experience and provide a place for couples and families to relax. UK based lodges, cottages and holiday parks in particular have embraced hot tubs over recent years and after Wi-Fi, hot tubs are the most requested item from customers researching holidays destinations of this type online. A great example of their popularity was highlighted recently by holiday specialist Hoseasons – one of the biggest operators in the UK sector. As a company, they have championed the use of hot tubs and as a result of their inclusion in many of their holidays, they saw a 19% year-on-year increase in lodges featuring hot tubs. Research also suggests that with the introduction of a hot tub, premiums of up to 40% can be added to the overall price of a holiday. And in addition to this premium, occupancy rates improve too. With statistics like these, it is no surprise that hot tubs have performed well in the sector and be adopted by increasing numbers every year. A number of considerations have to be taken into account when it comes to maintaining models in business settings though. Their operation should be in accordance with Health & Safety Guidance (HSG) 282: The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems – something which there is more information about on page 39 of this edition of SPN. Operating costs and durability also have to be conserved too. Thankfully, manufacturers have been quick to produce a number of models and technologies specifically for a sector where a hot tub needs to be particularly robust, easy to maintain and cost effective to operate. With a variety of solutions on offer, in this issue, we take a closer look at just some that are used in the sector.

BE IN CONTROL WITH HOT TUB SUPPLIERS’ DURABLE TMC MODELS Hot Tub Suppliers have launched a new range of hot tubs for the 2017 / 2018 season which is dedicated to the commercial market where the demand for durability, efficiency and control is imperative. Designed by Zen Spas, each model in the Total Management Control (TMC) range are constructed from a strong stainless steel frame with a triple insulation cabinet and a robust ABS base. The multi-layered acrylic shell is stylishly surrounded with LED features enhancing the customers’ experience. Each model features dual controls panels, the top (customer) panel limits the user to access to the lights and jets whilst the second control (management) panel boasts the full range of controls and is securely concealed within the hot tub cabinet behind a lockable panel. Adding a further dimension to hot tub control, TMC models are fitted with a Wi-Fi adapter which enables control of the hot tub via a mobile phone or other smart device. The Wi-Fi, control panels and spa system are all designed by the world renowned Balboa Water Group. On-site chemical and system training is provided by Hot Tub Suppliers and this is backed up with a portfolio of support videos
which are freely accessible 24/7 from the video gallery section on the company’s website (www.hottubsuppliers.com) meaning help and advice is always on offer. Further information on the TMC range is available via the Hot Tub Suppliers website with the seven seater Imperium and eight seater Orbis models both featured. More models will be added to the range in 2018. Based in Leicester, Hot Tub Suppliers are a multiple award winning hot tub company with a reputation built on product, support and service. The company are also BISHTA (British & Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) affiliated and are a Balboa Approved dealer.
BOWMAN EC80 – HOT TUB HEATING THAT’S FASTER AND CHEAPER The launch of the Bowman’s ultra-compact EC 80 unit at SPATEX earlier in the year has provided hot tub installers with a powerful alternative heating option. No longer do they need to rely on electric heaters to get their tubs up to temperature. Use of the EC 80 means that they can now utilise gas or renewable energy boilers and hot tubs can be heated from cold in just a few hours, compared to up to 24 hours, as is the case with many electric heaters. Heating the water in a hot tub in this way will also significantly lower heating costs, so there are dual benefits on offer.
TMC models from Hot Tub Suppliers feature dual controls panels – a top panel for customers (inset) management concealed within the hot tub cabinet.

The use Bowman’s EC 80 means that hot tubs can now utilise gas or renewable energy boilers and be heated from cold in just a few hours
At the UK trade show, Bowman illustrated how the EC 80 can be used for both single and multi-tub installations – the latter being of significant interest to the many holiday park and leisure destination operators, for whom offering hot tubs for their visitors has become a vital part of the venue’s attraction. At just 368 mm overall – including the end covers – this incredibly compact heat exchanger can handle heat loads of up to 25 kW/h, making it the perfect solution for hot tubs, spa pools and small domestic swimming pools. Available with a choice of titanium, stainless steel or cupro-nickel tube cores, it features solvent weld connectors, for easy installation into pool pipe work, plus an integral 7mm thermostat pocket. And, as an additional benefit, all titanium models come with a 10 year guarantee on all titanium in contact with water and as part of Bowman’s EC range, the exchangers also benefit from the new ‘Universal Fit’ end covers innovation which has been specifically developed to simplify installation and eliminate waste material.
A DURABLE ALL IN ONE SOLUTION FROM TUFF SPAS More and more holiday self-catering accommodation, such as cottages and lodges, now install and promote hot tubs to add value to their offer. As well as ensuring the hot tub is installed, operated and maintained within the requirements of the HSE code of practice (HSG282), the choice of product is also key in ensuring that the experience is fun, rewarding, and hassle free for both consumer and owner/operator alike. With Tuff Top, Tuff Spas say that owner/operators need never buy another cover. The cover itself converts into a shelf/bar which will support over 500kg! It’s fully insulated and gasket sealed for maximum efficiency, and a patented channel flow design prevents water from pooling on top of the cover. A Tuff Top is easily opened and closed by one person, and for ultimate in peace of mind, has a lifetime warranty, as does the shell. Within the construction, Tuff Spas unique Blue sTUFF insulation is made from thermally bonded recycled denim and offers excellent heat retention and sound absorption, for minimal running costs and customer comfort. The construction method means the shell and structure is incredibly durable. However, even in the event the material sustains damage, it can be repaired easily and invisibly using a heat gun, something which would be a serious, expensive and major repair on an acrylic spa.

ABOVE-GROUND POOLS
Above-ground Options To Provide Garden Fun
Plastica’s wooden pools are made of high grade, treated redwood timber chosen by experts in the UK and there is a ten year warranty on the pool wall
Despite tough competition from other wet leisure products, there’s still a lot of demand for above-ground pools in the UK. Available in a range of materials, the idea behind these entry-level solutions is cost effectiveness combined with straightforward installation that can often be achieved by a competent DIYer. The choice on offer has never been wider and this issue, we take a look at a sector that’s surely set to shine again this summer By Andrea Hartshorne

he thought of being able to splash about on a hot day to cool off or swim for exercise is all about being able to enjoy a relaxing dip in your own pool, without any restrictions on time or availability. An in-ground pool is usually first choice but often budget constraints or lack of space prevent this from being a realistic option. Many potential customers would be surprised by the versatility and the good looks that above-ground pools can provide to an outdoor leisure area. From small and round, to oblong or kidney, the variations of size and finish can satisfy almost any budget and bring as much pleasure as a more expensive in-ground pool. Often, these type of pools can also be a spur of the moment purchase when the

weather improves and retailers who offer a range of above-ground options can also look forward to increased sales of chemicals and accessories too. Easy to install and produced to a high quality, above-ground pools are still doing well despite increased competition from alternatives, their resilience being largely due to more variations and accessories being added to existing options. With the lure of fun-filled hours or lazy and relaxing days spent around a back garden pool a genuine possibility, the idea of an above-ground pool is still very appealing and at a lower price than an in-ground pool, there’s nothing to stop that dream from becoming a reality for many across the UK. With plenty of options available, we take a look at this year’s above-ground options.
IASO RANGE FROM SWIMMING POOL ZONE Designed for a garden or terrace, the IASO range of high quality detachable pools are very easy to assemble and dismantle with the only tool required being an Allen key. As one of the best options in their class, the interlocking anodised aluminium structure together with the highly durable PVC liners results in a pool that is designed for repeated use year after year and can be easily stored during the winter months. The compact design of the pools facilitates easy delivery with all items passing through standard doors or gateways. With a comprehensive range of models including circular forms in 3m, 4m and 6m diameters and rectangular forms from 4.5m in

AWARD WINNING WOODEN POOL A CUT ABOVE THE REST
A Gold award winning pool at last year’s British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, this installation of the Certikin wooden pool by Salisbury pool retailer, Spruce Pools, illustrates why the above-ground pool is a winner on aesthetics, quality materials and clever design to maintain its position as one of the market leaders. The owner of this pool originally requested that Spruce Pools install an in-ground swimming pool. However, the property is surrounded by two rivers, running either side of it, with a water table only 80cm down, ruling out the chance of installing an in-ground pool. The Certikin wooden above-ground pool provided the perfect solution. Managing Director of Spruce Pools, Jeremy Chalke said: “The installation went very smoothly, we took delivery on Monday lunchtime and the customer was swimming by Friday evening, even though the water temperature was only 20°C. “The customer was absolutely delighted with the end result and uses the pool from April through to October. This is the third wooden pool that we have installed and each has been so successful that we intend promoting this product heavily in the future.”

Jeremy added: “Leaving aside the fact that it is a stylish and superb quality pool, we like the wooden pool because it is Certikin. That means we know it’s solid and of sound construction; we have the assurance that we can easily get spares and we can access the whole raft of service and technical back-up that Certikin offers.” Spruce Pools 01722 323895 www.sprucepools.co.uk

ABOVE-GROUND POOLS One of three Gardipool models from SCP, the Quartoo is also available with overflow
by a stainless steel threaded bar and has been further developed for rectangular shape pools of distinction. The rectangular Quartoo model (which is also available with overflow) and the Rectoo, which features a rectangular shape at one end, are self-supporting structures with galvanised metal supports, which are fixed into a reinforced concrete floor. This allows the structure to be semi in-ground, in-ground or above-ground. An octagonal version, the Octoo, completes this exclusive range of wooden pools. Both the standard GardiPool Quartoo and Rectoo consist of a wooden frame (45mm) in treated, grade 4 red pinewood and wooden coping in an exotic hardwood. Wooden external stairs are also in treated red pinewood whilst the internal stairs and all structural hardware fittings are in stainless steel. There are corresponding wooden finishing profiles for the galvanised metal supports (IPE120).Others features of these

With new installations of traditional above-ground pools under pressure from alternatives, there’s an opportunity for wet leisure companies to help existing owners update their pool this summer, according to Golden Coast. Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “In the most recent ‘State of the Wet Leisure Industry’ survey, we’re seeing increasing interest in customers looking to add value to their pools. “For example, if your customer is looking to build fitness, BADU Jet counter-current units unlock the pleasure of a full-length pool… without the need for extra space, hassle or expense.” Ideal for endless swimming, BADU Jet Perla over-the-wall units, available exclusively through Golden Coast, also create opportunities for underwater massage and aquatic fun. Compact and streamlined, they feature a 2.3 kW pump that jets water through a directional nozzle at a rate of 40m3/hr. Units are resistant to UV, scratches and stains and are supplied with LED lighting (crisp white or vibrant multicolour) as standard. For customers looking to transform an above-ground pool quickly and, more importantly, without breaking the bank Golden Coast say it’s worth looking at lighting options. The GAME colour changing wall light is a Golden Coast exclusive and offers 16 colour modes, as well as four colourchanging modes that instantly transform the look and feel of a pool. Supplied with an advanced remote, the four-inch LED light emits 25 lumens and is 25% brighter than its predecessor. Jamie said: “It’s easily the most versatile and easy-to-use LED pool light on the market. Installation is virtually effortless as it attaches to steel and soft-sided pools without tools or wiring.”

ABOVE-GROUND POOLS the first Laghetto pool is a pool that made history. And since then, there have been a number of pivotal moments for the company. In 1982 a Classic is designed, a rectangular pool with white top border and blue walls that has become an icon in the above-ground pool market. Thanks to the extraordinary performance and extreme flexibility of the Laghetto Classic, it still remains in production 35 years on. The ’90s saw the birth of the seminal Bluespring patent, an infinity pool for in and above-ground installations. In 2007, the continuous research to find the perfect solution to make an aboveground pool that rivals, for elegance and functionality, in-ground pools leads to the design of the revolutionary Dolcevita model. A pool where technology and Italian beauty create a special product, tailored modular and customisable. Latest models are the Dolcevita Yacht and Dolcevita Resort, the Resort being an overflow pool. In 2014 Laghetto celebrated 40 years with the launch of the colourful POP! TILING & MOSAICS
Tremendous Tiling Makes For Superb Finishes Helping to create stunning looking pools, Luxury Pools and Mosaics are the only UK company offering their bespoke mosaic ranges
The options that exist today to complete stunning looking pools and other wet leisure facilities has never been greater and thanks to the introduction of new tiling textures and finishes, creating an exclusive bespoke look has never been easier. It seems there is no end to the creative possibilities that can now be achieved and we take a closer look at what’s on offer to add style and individuality to projects across the country By Karen Witney
S
pecifying plant for a pool or spa installation or refurbishment is vitally important for the continued smooth operation of the system, but this is, in the main, hidden from vision. When it comes to the finishing, aesthetics are of equal importance and owners are understandably particular in making the right choice. In today’s market, the available choices and options for tiling and mosaics are almost endless – size, shape, colour – all come into play and can be used to accent or complement the pool or spa setting. Advancements in tile technology are being used to add both style and practicality to swimming pool and spa projects too, as Cameron Fraser, Director at specialist tile and mosaic company Ceramique Internationale Ltd explained: “When it comes to pools, spas and leisure centres, tiles play a key role not only practically but also in terms of creating the right look and feel and, as technology
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 65-68_SPN_June_17_Tiling_&_Mosaics.indd 65
has progressed, leisure facilities no longer have to settle for utilitarian products. Advancements have led to porcelain tiles perfectly replicating natural stone and this comes with a number of advantages. These include being easier to clean and maintain, while also complying with European anti-slip standards.” Cameron continued: “Of course, every project is different, and presents a different set of demands and challenges. But, with new technology changing the printing and production processes for tiles, there is really no restriction on spa and swimming pool designers to create fit-for-purpose wet leisure areas that are stunning and stylish as well.” So whether it’s a pool indoors or out, small or large, domestic or commercial, a tiled finish can provide impressive results and are a durable and long-lasting choice. So this issue, we taker a closer look at some of the names within the market.
UP TO THE MINUTE WITH THE MOSAIC COMPANY Picking out the trends from the selections made by The Mosaic Company’s clients is an important part of the company’s planning when it comes to sourcing new pool mosaic products to add to their portfolio. Classic combinations of blues and whites continue to perform well, but increasingly they find that more creative freedom is being exercised by the end user. A trend for more up market products has become apparent and increasingly mosaics with lustre glazes are being selected, along with choices in larger formats. The current popularity of monochrome in architectural design is also influencing selection, with choices in greys, blacks and whites all growing. Progress in production technology has also brought digitally printed glass mosaics into the portfolio of what is available to the swimming pool builder, further widening the horizons

There is also a growing interest in using larger format porcelain tiles in pool linings. Manufacturers are producing an ever-growing selection of suitable products, with oversized formats and digital surface decoration to the fore. Natural looking tiles are popular too, as are tiles with metallic glazes which can produce stunning effects if used sensitively. Providing the highest quality standards and continuity of supply remains the principal philosophy of The Mosaic Company and a vastly experienced and dedicated team that delivers an exceptional level of service ensures that this is achieved.

When it comes to pools, spas and leisure centres, tiles play a key role not only practically but also in terms of creating the right look and feel” includes swimming pool and spa mosaics and tiles, porcelain, glass and stone tiles, as well as bespoke creations and heritage collections. The company’s ZEN collection is a unique, elegant range of mosaic tiles inspired by natural stone, marble and wood – a much desired look that has not been available to the pool and spa industry before and was very difficult to achieve in private bathrooms. The products offer a matt texture in a range of tranquil colours which evoke relaxation in every inch. All of the new mosaics draw inspiration from the simple beauty of nature while also providing the tiled space with a perfect fusion of nuances, reflections and textures. The warmth of wood and the subtle veining of stone come together to form a collection, which not only soothes the senses, but also benefits from all the practical qualities and the longevity of recycled glass. All ZEN products are compatible with the JointPoint® technology offered by Designworks Tiles – an advanced system where silicone points are used to join individual mosaics together into panels (the points are on the reverse of the panel or sheet). Designed to ensure that the sheets are laid uniformly, up to 92% of the surface is left free for the application of adhesive, which results in better adhesion and superior grip. JointPoint® is very easy to work with and install – the sheets are flexible and controllable. Architects and designers can use it anywhere – from pools and spas to bathrooms and wet-rooms.
AQUA STONE POOL FINISHES PROVIDE VERSATILITY Aqua Stone Pool Finishes specialise in providing decorative finishes to swimming pool interiors and surrounds for both new builds and refurbishments, indoor and outdoor pools. In addition to offering their PebbleTec® and PebbleSheen® coatings, the company also provides traditional mosaic tile and stone finishes. Their mosaic tiles offer a traditional, durable, versatile and aesthetically pleasing finish to any pool. Aqua Stone have over 30 years’ experience of mosaic tiling and waterproof rendering and screeding. The company are pleased to be able to assist with a selection of tiles through chosen suppliers and can offer brochures and samples to assist with colour selection. Aqua Stone are happy to work with the client’s own design ideas and tiles or are equally as happy to recommend a solution to achieving the perfect pool finish. Standard and bespoke motifs are also available. The finish to a pool and its surrounding area, including spa, sauna, wet, changing and steam rooms is, aesthetically, the most important aspect. This is where moods and ambiences are created using different materials, textures and colours. As a specialist firm, Aqua Stone are experts in their field, working with architects, designers, pool builders and, most importantly, the client.

SHOWS ROUNDUP
Shows Roundup We look at what’s on and where over the coming months NEW EVENTS PARTNERS WITH LIW New Events, organisers of the UK Pool & Spa Expo and the Hot Tub Living Expo, have joined forces with Leisure Industry Week (LIW) this year to deliver the UK’s largest leisure industry trade show at Birmingham’s NEC. In 2016, LIW attracted 7,000 attendees and this year’s event is expected to be a key meeting place for decision makers, buyers and influencers from across the leisure industry. It brings together thousands of like-minded professionals to shape the future and growth of the sector. This is supported by a wealth of seminars, workshops and demonstrations and more than 200 exhibitors. By joining the two events, the organisers are confident of a winning formula which will deliver new and existing contacts to the pool and spa sector in particular. Organisers hope that the mix of visitors will give companies the opportunity to widen their network of contacts and meet new distributors and users. The event attracts visitors who are owners or operators of Hotels, Leisure Centres, Country Clubs, Local Authorities, Health Clubs, Spas, Rehabilitation Centres, Sports Clubs, Schools, Colleges and more. With the combination of the two events this year, New Events will be working closely with the LIW team to attract dealers, retailers, installers, architects and property developers that have an interest in water related products, services and accessories. Taking place 12 – 13 September in Hall 1 of the NEC, LIW will feature six tailored sector specific educational streams designed to bring in decision makers from all aspects of the leisure industry. With free entry, a new layout and focus for this year, plus great

facilities that include the new Resorts World and unlimited parking, the organisers of the event are expecting to attract nearer to 9,000 delegates in 2017.
AN EVENT DEFINED BY GROWTH – PISCINA & WELLNESS BARCELONA Piscina & Wellness Barcelona is preparing its next edition, which will take place in from 17 to 20 October 2017 and there’s a good outlook for growth in line with the revival in demand in the Spanish market. Organisers expect to bring together more than 310 exhibitors at the show and for it to be some 10% larger in terms of space and visitors than the previous edition. Spain is Europe’s second-ranked country and fourth in the world in terms of the number of swimming pools (1.16 million). It is an attractive market with business opportunities for refurbishment, maintenance and equipment. This is evidenced by the fact that 60% of the show’s exhibitors and 40% of the visitors are international. Piscina & Wellness Barcelona is one of the shows that defines the sector’s trade fair calendar internationally, and brings together leading brands of manufacturers and distributors, as well as buyers, suppliers and opinion-formers from more than 120 countries. With a special focus on wellness and spa and water installations as booming sectors in 2017, organisers expect that the show’s international appeal will be enhanced even further. At the show it will also be possible to see the main trends driving the market, based on innovative and eco-efficient technologies

solutions that enhance sustainability and the user’s experience. Piscina & Wellness Barcelona also provides an important platform for knowledge of the industry by means of its technical seminars. This year, the show will hold seminars and conferences focusing on wellness and public swimming pools and will host the III Waterpark Symposium for water parks, as well as ASOFAP training sessions. Demonstration spaces, where visitors can see exhibitors products in action will also be present along with an Innovation Zone explaining the main innovations presented by the exhibitors.
NUMEROUS PRESTIGIOUS NAMES ALREADY ON BOARD FOR AQUANALE Held from 7 - 10 November in Cologne, aquanale is seeing higher registration numbers in comparison to the same point in the run-up to the previous edition. Not only are registration numbers higher, but also more exhibition space has already been reserved at the International Trade Fair for Sauna, Pool and Ambience. In total, around 320 companies from more than 25 countries are expected to exhibit at the German event in 2017. Traditionally, aquanale is co-located with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities. The coordination of the two events ensures that both the private and public swimming pool sectors are represented in Cologne prominently and, above all, internationally. In addition to the wide range of exhibitors,

a supporting programme of events helps complete the aquanale offering with the highlight being the 7th International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum. The attractiveness of aquanale for the international swimming pool and wellness industry is underlined by the number of confirmed registrations from prestigious companies from both Germany and abroad. An important contact for national and international trade visitors is the conceptual sponsor for aquanale, the bsw (Bundesverband Schwimmbad und Wellness/ Federal Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness), which, as in previous years, will provide a networking platform for the industry sectors. Stimulating content will be provided by the seventh International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum, which this year will be even more internationally oriented and will cover the industry’s most important topics for today and tomorrow. The furnishing and equipment of swimming pools, saunas and spas will also be put under the spotlight. The forum for swimming pool construction (PlanerForum BÄDERBAU) has also been expanded and internationalised. The compact programme has been precisely tailored and edited to meet the needs and demands of public swimming pool operators, architects and decision makers in municipal authorities.
SPATEX 2018 MOVES INTO A NEW ERA With the ringing endorsement and support of its many friends in the water leisure industry, SPATEX celebrated its 21st year earlier in the year and is now all grown up! And with the rebooking of stand space up 36% when compared to the same time last year, the early indications are that next year’s Show
will be another huge success. A very happy SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “Such strong sales reflect the quality of this year’s Show and the confidence the industry has in us repeating that performance next year. And with strong visitor numbers again this year, there could be no better launch pad for the 2018 Show.” Looking forward to next year, Michele added: “Each year we like to set the bar that little bit higher so work has already started to make the 2018 Show even more vibrant and relevant across all aspects. “The highly successful ISPE Workshop programme which is such a cornerstone of the Exhibition will of course be revised and updated. We know that our visitors really value the knowledge that the workshops impart and in 2018 we are looking to introduce many more esteemed speakers and some hands-on practical demonstrations – Mega-Demos as we are billing them!” A new show also means a brand new website and the 2018 offering is simple to navigate, informative, interactive and features new graphics, many of which are from this year’s BISHTA & SPATA award winning entries. With social media playing a big part in SPATEX’s communication offering to both exhibitors and visitors, Instagram has also been added to the exhibition’s social media mix – a move which will allow the showcasing of some of the best imagery in the industry. SPATEX returns to the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday 30 January to Thursday 1 February 2018.

OPINION
Corbyn And May Can At Least Agree On Their Love Of Pools And Spas “When Jerrard Corbyn and Tabatha May were debating what their favourite luxury item would be, they both put a pool or hot tub near the top of their list. You’ll be amazed at what Tom Farron had to say about saunas!” In this edition, Jamie Adams takes a light-hearted look at fake news FAKE NEWS. THE WORLD SEEMS ABSOLUTELY FULL OF IT From the outright lie to a slight distortion of the truth, no matter where you get your news from, be it the papers, the television or your social media newsfeed, it seems that half the things that you read or hear ‘ain’t necessarily so’. The question is, does it do us any harm or is it all just a bit of fun?
CELEBRITY TOPLESS PICS! CORRIE STAR CAUGHT IN HIS TRUNKS! Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead and the motivation behind it is usually financial or political gain. So the purpose that drives fake news isn’t a fun one. No one rings in to Have I Got News for You or The News Quiz and complains that they have been deceived or misinformed. Satire and parody have long been a part of the comic tradition and we all accept that and take it in the spirit in which it was written. But fake news tries to disguise itself as real news. It’s fair to say that quite a lot of it is absolutely laughable and so it’s easy to dismiss the idea of manipulation and just write all of it off as a joke.
EUROCRATS PASS REGULATIONS ON HOW WET POOL WATER CAN BE But the jokes aren’t always that funny. In 1994, the EU began laying down quality standards for fruit, as they do for everything from electrical goods to pharmaceuticals. When they came to the banana they decided that Grade 1 bananas must be ‘free from bruises’, ‘free from any foreign smell’ and, crucially, ‘free from malformation or abnormal curvature’. Over 20 years later, thanks to the reporting style of certain sections of the media, ‘Brussels bonkers ban on bendy bananas’ was a distorted news story that was still playing in our heads as we went to the ballots in the referendum.
Sun published a series of articles about an actual astronomer, Sir John Herschel, and the completely made-up story of the bizarre creatures he had observed living on the moon. After a month the paper admitted that this particular scientific story had been invented and no one particularly minded. They had taken it as a bit of fun.
It’s probably in the political arena that fake news has the biggest impact and it’s on the internet and on social media in particular that fake news is mostly generated and then spread. And it’s on that media and on that subject where it does the most damage too, but I think we’ve probably had our fill of politics for a little while so let’s leave that there.
SPENDING TOO LONG IN A HOT TUB MAY CAUSE ‘DAMP HAIR SYNDROME’
BABY ALLIGATOR CAUGHT BY DARLLY FILTER
Of course, the problem comes when we begin to doubt every piece of new research or scientific fact. When we doubt climate change. When we doubt the need to reduce energy consumption. The more fake news that we are exposed to, the more we begin to doubt everything. And when we doubt everything we simply throw in the towel and say, ‘Well, there’s nothing that I can do about any of that’. And let’s not be in two minds about it. Fake news is all the rage.
SWEDISH SAUNA FOUND ON MOON!
LUIS SUÁREZ TAKES DIVE IN NEIGHBOUR’S POOL
In 1988 The Sunday Sport famously ‘found’ a WW2 bomber on the moon. As a front-page it was a bit of fun and sold papers, but it wasn’t original. In fact, they were about 150 years behind the times. In 1835 The New York
During the US presidential election, fake news stories saw more sharing on Facebook than legitimate ones. Analysts suggest that this was because the fake news stories were more exciting. (But that might just be fake news.)
