A lot has changed for both the UK as a country and for the wet leisure industry operating within its borders since our last June issue was published. However, somewhat sadly, one thing has definitely remained the same over the last 12 months – and that one thing is uncertainty – and it unfortunately covers a number of important areas both for our sector and further afield. As this year ticked round, there was a lot of optimism around. COVID finally seemed be on the retreat, the industry had, after a somewhat shaky start, largely prospered throughout most of it and SPATEX and all who attended it were upbeat. In short, I personally had a good feeling. Certainty? Well no. Few things in life are certain, but it really seemed as though things were moving in the right direction. However, things can and do change, and this year has been the perfect example of how quickly events can take a turn, and a lot of them recently appear to be for the worse. I’ll not list all the issues that businesses and many across the UK are having to contend with as everyone knows what they are, plus there’s now actually quite a long list and quite honestly, they are rather depressing! But I will just say the energy crisis does really concern me, and I know many others in the industry and beyond. So, parking those thoughts and concentrating on this latest issue, we’ve a number of features that are topical given the times we are in. Inside, we take an in depth look at the various options for heating swimming pool water, with a focus on solutions which aren’t heat pump or environmental systems based – solutions which will definitely take the chill out of the water in a variety of settings.
With face-to-face trade events, both in the UK and around the world, now taking place again, we round up what’s on and where over the next 12 months or so. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve a number of shorter pieces this issue too. Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams takes a look at the changing world of work while Robbie Philips at the STA highlights the ‘need to knows’ of lone working in wet leisure environments. Superior Wellness have coverage regarding the latest facilities at their Chesterfield-based headquarters and some newer names to the UK market are showcased as pool manufacturer Albixon and chemical business hth® fall under the spotlight. Lastly, we’ve a write up covering the interesting topics presented at the online international conference held by PWTAG. Work Starts On Two Energy Efficient Leisure Developments In Yorkshire Thanks to a multi-million-pound investment by Harrogate Borough Council, Alliance Leisure has begun work on the delivery of two extensive leisure developments that will transform leisure provision for the communities of Harrogate and Knaresborough whilst also supporting the Council’s Net Zero Carbon ambitions. In Harrogate, The Hydro will benefit from an extension and refurbishment of existing facilities to include a fitness suite, a new sauna and steam suite, plus an overhaul of the existing pool and leisure facilities. The diving structure will also be replaced so it can continue to support and nurture young talent in the way that it has done for Olympians, such as Jack Laugher MBE and Oliver Dingley. Energy efficient, air source heat pumps will replace the existing gas boilers and 250 solar panels are already in the process of being installed along with new energy monitoring and control systems. The project will be carried out in phases with the refurbished pool hall and changing village re-opening in January 2023. In Knaresborough, a new-build leisure and wellness centre will provide a six-lane 25 metre pool, activity pool with flume, sauna and steam room, fitness suite and other facilities.
The centre will be built to a BREEAM standard of ‘excellent’ and will incorporate high efficiency building materials, air source heat pumps and solar panels to reduce the carbon footprint. Work starts on Knaresborough on 26 April
and is due to be completed by July 2023. Both projects will be delivered by Alliance Leisure, working with ISG Construction and GT3 architects through the UK Leisure Framework which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure.
Ocea UK Are Making A Splash With A New Look And Website For over 20 years, Ocea UK have been one of the market leaders in automatic pool covers, but they are evolving. IN BRIEF INGLETON SWIMMING POOL JOINS HPB Historic Pools of Britain are delighted to announce their newest member pool, Ingleton Swimming Pool in Carnforth. Nestled in the beautiful surroundings of the village of Ingleton, with the River Doe and Ingleton Waterfalls Trail close by, this pool is a community star. Opened in 1933 thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, who included striking miners, it’s been serving local people ever since and in summer is a popular attraction for visitors. Chair of Historic Pools of Britain, Amanda Harwood, commented: “We are thrilled to see Ingleton Swimming Pool taking its place on the now famous Historic Pools of Britain map. This thriving community lido is a great example to others around the country who want to see their communities benefit from the wellbeing that they can generate.”
CHLORINE SHORTAGE CAUSES PUBLIC POOL ISSUES ACROSS THE UK A shortage of chlorine within the UK has forced a number of commercial swimming pools to close or reduce their availability to swimmers, with operators blaming a combination of factors including logistics and shipping issues, driver shortages, a production fall in China, a fire at a US chemical plant, COVID, Brexit and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Chris Hayes, Managing Director of SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) recently advised that some pool chemical companies were experiencing supply chain difficulties but the issues should be short-term. PWTAG (The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) confirmed there was a national shortage of calcium hypochlorite resulting in the closures and prices being driven up more than 50%.

Plan For Enhanced Swimming Experience In Bedfordshire Takes Its Next Step Ambitious plans to build a new £25m community and leisure centre at Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire are taking their next step. Regarding the provision of wet leisure specifically, the proposals for the new facility include an eight-lane 25 metre community swimming pool, which is more than double the size of the pool at the existing Houghton Regis Leisure Centre. There will be a dedicated learner pool with a movable floor to raise or lower the depth for swimming lessons and other activities and a separate splash pool. This is all part of an enhanced swimming experience. A formal agreement with nearby Houstone School will mean the local community can tap into the exceptional modern sports facilities being built there too. Councillor Tracey Stock, Executive Member
for Health and Wellbeing and Communities, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to build a fantastic new leisure and community facility for Houghton Regis. The much bigger, new centre will transform the leisure provision by offering superior facilities for residents. When you combine the new leisure centre with what is available at the school, it offers a comprehensive package of the very latest sports and leisure facilities. The plan will now be subject to a planning consultation and will be considered by the Development Management Committee in July this year. Subject to planning approval, construction would start in winter 2022 and be complete in summer 2024. The existing Houghton Regis Leisure Centre would remain open throughout the works.

IN BRIEF PLANS MOVE FORWARD FOR NEW DEVON COMMUNITY FACILITY A state-of-the-art new leisure centre is set for Sherford in Devon, with plans progressing and work expected to start before the end of the year. This new community facility will include an indoor 25-metre, four-lane heated swimming pool plus various other sports and fitness amenities. The leisure centre marks a major investment in the creation of high quality facilities at Sherford, and will be led by the Sherford Consortium, the developers responsible for this awardwinning new town. Plymouth City Council has secured £400,000 in developer contributions towards the project and additional funding will also be provided by Plymstock and District Swimming Pool Association, contributing £182,000 to fund enhancements to the pool area that will ensure it is accessible to all.
BOGNOR REGIS SWIMMING POOL SET TO CLOSE The Arena Sports Centre in Bognor Regis could be forced to close its swimming pool ‘for the foreseeable future’ despite short-term plans to have it operating in late summer following heating issues. Closing the swimming pool was a last resort for staff at the centre, and management made clear they explored all possible avenues before deciding on the closure. £100k had been invested in the pool in the last two years but further work was required for repairs to the pool and the building. United Learning, the trust responsible for operating the pool, said it is not in a position to ‘re-invest in the pool’, however it was also made clear that the swimming pool could re-open at some point in the future, albeit with the assistance of a third party.

Therme Group Unveils Updated Design For Manchester Wellbeing Resort
Therme Group, a global developer and operator of state-of-the-art wellbeing destinations, has unveiled updated plans for Therme Manchester, the UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort at TraffordCity. Therme Group is working in partnership with Peel L&P to deliver the project, at a cost of over £250m and builds upon many exciting elements in the existing planning consent. In addition to a ‘next generation’ waterpark, thermal bathing and a wellbeing spa, these include immersive digital art, an on site urban farm and botanical gardens. This combination of features highlights Therme’s aim to be far more than just a waterpark and spa, but to create an integrated experience to benefit physical and mental health. The updated plans adopt the very latest technology to make the development even more sustainable and deliver additional exciting features for visitors. They involve a greater integration of biophilic design elements, including double-curved
roofs, which reduce the amount of steel required, increasing the sustainability of the development. New guest attractions include an all-season urban beach and the world’s first living waterslides to incorporate a 3D-printed superstructure housing thousands of plants. Innovative ‘welltech’ experiences will be available, such as a snow room, multi-sensory showers and oxygen rooms, and a visitor and education centre will welcome school and community groups for events on sustainability, food and nature. The resort will have a major net gain in biodiversity with a 10,000 sq m wellbeing garden, a next-generation hydroponic vertical farm, more than 1,500 trees and roof-top beehives, producing honey for use in restaurants and wellbeing treatments. Therme is aiming to submit a revised planning application in the summer. Construction of the development is scheduled to begin in 2023, with a build time of around two years.
Another Triumph For EVAline Lighting The new Eastwood Leisure Centre in Sheerwater, Woking is one of the latest builds to benefit from innovative EVAline lighting. The facility opened to the public in autumn 2021, hosting a number of impressive facilities for the community, including a 25-metre swimming pool. Contractor Barrie Beard was responsible for the electrical design, supply and installation at Eastwood, and when it came to choosing the lighting for pool, there was a clear choice in mind. Darren Stokes, Associate Director at Barrie Beard explained: “Ever since we first installed EVAline direct LED lighting at a leisure centre a few years ago, it has been our go-to product. These lights deliver exceptional performance and quality.” Unlike indirect lighting, EVAline LED lights are fitted around the perimeter of the pool shining directly over the water. This ensures minimal glare on the surface of the water and provides lifeguards with better visibility into the pool.
As an additional safety measure, Eastwood Leisure Centre uses anti-drowning technology in the form of underwater cameras. EVAline delivers greater light penetration into the water which enables the cameras to capture clearer pictures with less shadowing for more effective pool monitoring. At the leisure centre, Barrie Beard mounted twelve 120W EVAline modular lights and six 30W EVAline modular lights around the pool and upper viewing balcony within the 583m3 pool hall. These lights use only 2100 Watts at just 3.34W/ m², with a total load of 1.05 W/m²/100 Lux. For this particular installation, industry guidelines state that light levels must be an average of 300 Lux, with an illumination uniformity value of 0.7 or higher. Despite its lower wattage, EVAline lighting at Eastwood provided powerful illumination and delivered an average Lux of 333 plus a uniformity of 0.84. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

Mapei Features At Carbon Neutral Leisure Centre A full Mapei system has formed part of the new Braywick Leisure Centre – a £33m state-of-the-art facility designed by Plymouth-based BRL Architects. The new iconic Centre in Maidenhead replaces the Magnet Leisure Centre; it combines recreational, leisure and cultural facilities on a larger footprint, whilst using 70% less energy. The project was delivered by Wates Construction who worked closely with engineering consultants, Hoare Lea, to meet the sustainability targets. Under its striking sweeping roof, the centre features a 400m2 internal covered top lit ‘street’, from which all areas are accessed. Wet leisure facilities include a ten lane pool and trainer pool – each with spectator seating. Mapei products were used from early design stage to completion, in the installation of floor and wall coverings, for concrete repairs, new construction, tanking, waterproofing and structural reinforcement. The Mapei specification included Eporip solvent-free epoxy adhesive for construction joints, bonding of screeds and localised concrete repair. Within pool areas, changing villages and corridors, products used included Mapei Topcem fast drying hydraulic binder, Planitop Fast 330 quick-setting, fibre-reinforced mortar, Mapelastic Smart highly flexible, cementitious waterproof membrane, Mapetex Sel non-woven, macro-holed polypropylene reinforcing fabric, Keraflex Maxi S1 deformable cementitious adhesive and Keraquick S1 quick-setting, deformable cementitious adhesive. Mapei Ultracolor Plus anti-efflorescence, quick-setting and drying polymer-modified grout – featuring water-repellent DropEffect® and mould-resistant BioBlock® – was used for all tiled areas, along with Mapesil AC pure mould-resistant acetic silicone sealant for all movement joints. Other products specified included Mapemortar HB R3 high build, shrinkage compensated repair mortar. Charity Football Match Gets Backing From Wet Leisure Companies On Sunday 8 May 2022, a charity football match took place between Sophie’s Allstars and Portsmouth FC Legends, with the final score being 2-1 to the Allstars. The winning team were representing Sophie’s Legacy (www.sophieslegacy.co.uk) – a cancer research charity for children. Sophie turned 9 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and at the age of 10 sadly passed away surrounded by her family at home. Sophie wanted the following things changed and this will be her legacy in memory of a remarkable young girl who touched so many lives: • Play specialists 7 days a week in hospitals • Improvements to food for children in hospital • For parents to be fed when staying with their child • For GPs, nurses and health professionals to be trained in childhood cancer • To increase the funds (currently 3%) in childhood cancer research. Sophie loved going to football with her dad, a lifelong Pompey fan and season pass holder for 34 years. It was, therefore, fitting to have the charity football match. The event was sponsored by the luxury pool and wellness brand Aqua Platinum Pools who also supplied the kits and trophy, and

was attended by 3,500 spectators. All money raised was donated to the charity. New Poolpods Installed At Wiltshire Swimming Pools Wiltshire Council is installing Poolpods across its leisure centres, making swimming pools more accessible for disabled customers and anyone who may struggle to access swimming independently. Poolpods have already been installed at The Vale in Pewsey, Marlborough Leisure Centre and Devizes Leisure Centre, with further installations due at Five Rivers Health & Wellbeing Centre, Olympiad Leisure Centre, Trowbridge Sports Centre and The Activity Zone in Malmesbury by March 2023. They will also be installed at the new Melksham Community Campus, which is due

to open later this year. Poopods provide dignified and independent access for swimmers who find it hard to get in or out of the swimming pool, such as wheelchair users, older adults, pregnant women and those with limited mobility. Unlike a traditional pool hoist, the user can independently control the operation, using a specially designed wristband, without the need for a pool attendant’s intervention. IN BRIEF FLUIDRA DIVESTS 100% OF ITS OWNERSHIP IN TOGAMA Effective 11 May 2022, Fluidra completed the divestment of 100% of its ownership in Togama SAU to US-based Ten Oaks Group. Togama, based in Vila-Real, Castellón in Spain, is a manufacturer and distributor of ceramic and vitreous products for swimming pool lining, wellness and interior and exterior decoration. Togama’s activities were considered non-core to the pool business, and its divestment will have a very marginal impact on the group’s financial statements. To ensure Fluidra’s supply requirements, a supply agreement is in place for a minimum 2-year duration and no business disruptions are anticipated. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Ten Oaks Group is a family office with a successful global track record dedicated exclusively to investing in corporate divestitures. Fluidra believe that they will provide a great home for Togama, giving it the opportunity to develop its products further and enter new markets.
LATHAM GROUP PROVIDES UPDATE ON TEXAS FACILITY FIRE At the end of April, Latham Group, Inc. announced that its fibreglass facility in Odessa, Texas was affected by a fire. No employees were present at the time of the incident, and no one was injured. The Odessa location is solely dedicated to manufacturing in-ground fibreglass pools. The fire primarily impacted the facility’s production area. Existing inventory in the facility was largely unaffected. Production at, and pool deliveries from, the Odessa facility were paused as Latham worked alongside local authorities to investigate the situation and assess the extent of the damage whilst opportunities to redeploy assets and resources to its other US fibreglass manufacturing facilities were being explored.

At Fuorisalone in Milan, architect Michele Perlini exhibited his My Secret design, a wellness module in the form of an architectural element devoted to calm and contemplation. A tribute to the Japanese culture of wellbeing, My Secret created an impression through its simple architecture. Enclosed by sliding shoji walls and a large, panoramic glass facade, which draws the eye to a more intimate interior. The inside follows a typically oriental layout and employs surfaces in natural materials, soothing diffused lighting and pared-back decorative elements, for a pure and uncontaminated effect, with visual voids designed to encourage contemplation and spiritual elevation. The module is spread over three functional sections: a sleeping area, dominated by a large futon, a Finnish sauna, and a sensorial shower area with chromotherapy. This last area features Lapitec sintered stone, a next-generation
Made in Italy material, covered by 25 patents and created from a mixture of 100% natural minerals, compacted without the addition of glues or resins. Available in large, full-body slabs, for architecture and interiors, it offers ultra-resistant characteristics – even in wet or particularly humid environments – thanks to its completely nonporous surface. First Of Its Kind Pop-up Swimming Pool Arrives In Republic Of Ireland Fingal has become the inaugural host for Ireland’s first ever popup swimming pool, with the Swim Ireland initiative set to bring swimming to communities right across the country. In partnership with Fingal County Council and Sport Ireland, Swim Ireland wanted to improve the opportunity and experience for all level of swimmers to access somewhere local, so found an innovative solution by bringing the first of its kind pop-up pool to communities. Every 12-weeks the pool will move to new locations on its journey around Ireland, with an ambitious target of providing 750 swimming experiences a week. Holding 45,000 litres of water, the 12m by 3.4m structure will remain in the small coastal town of Donabate until midJuly before setting off to its next destination. The pool itself is sheltered from the elements in a hard sided marquee, and there is a ramp and a hoist meaning the pool can cater for all types of swimmers. It makes it the ideal place to learn to swim, hone skills or just remember how great it feels to block out the world and dip your head in the water. Launching the pool in Donabate, Minister for Sport Jack Chambers said: “This is about bringing a pool into the heart of a community and integrating it with our education system. We boast some 6,000km of coastline in Ireland, so it’s important we deliver water safety lessons to as many people as possible – this new and innovative pilot will help us achieve that, along with encouraging active participation for all groups in the community.”

Safety And Standards Are Still High Industry Priorities In this latest issue, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes provides an update on topics being addressed by working groups within the pool and spa industry, with key subjects including standards and safety

s June focused on Drowning Prevention Week here in the UK, although there are very few deaths in pools and hot tubs, we are still aware of the need to promote safety, and we welcome a contribution from our colleagues at the National Water Safety Forum. The forum brings a number of bodies together in cooperation with an interest in water safety, including a campaign called #RespectTheWater. Please see the article on page 33 for more details about the important work of the National Water Safety Forum. Carrying on the collaborative working theme, BISHTA and SPATA have been liaising with the Home Office, and a recent webinar presentation was hosted online regarding the vital topic of ‘Selling Chemicals Responsibly’. There was a beneficial exchange between law enforcement officers and our industry to identify how we can work even more effectively at reducing the chances of chemicals falling into the wrong hands. The recent presentation has been added to the BISHTA and SPATA websites (in the Members’ Hub). It is planned to have a follow-up article on this subject in SPN later this year. Apart from the webinar mentioned above, the industry has also benefited from sessions at SPATEX, an ISPE seminar and
also a SPATA webinar on the draft domestic outdoor pool standard prEN 17645 ‘Environmental performance efficiency – Performance evaluation, methodology, and classification of the use of pools and their equipment’. With the standard expected to be published in September, awareness sessions have been provided by Will Dando (who has been the UK expert on behalf of SPATA and BSI at this European working group). Further training is anticipated for installers as the industry starts to get used to the proposed new way of working regarding industry energy labelling. You can read more about Will’s work on page 35. Other training opportunities via SPATA already in the diary include a Sauna & Steam course on Tuesday 25 October, and a Heat Pump course on Wednesday 9 November. Being planned for later this year, there is also due to be a Liner course and some Environmental Control & Ductwork courses. BISHTA continue to benefit from tutors offering courses in Water Hygiene Management, Dangerous Goods, Electrical (run by NICEIC) and CHTT courses. SPATA members need to be aware of an update to the Standards with the third amendment to the 2017 standards recently released and available on the SPATA website in the Members’ Hub. There is more on this subject on page 34. It is also hoped to have opportunities to work with Buckinghamshire and Surrey County Councils’ Trading Standards teams, who have taken on the role of

Primary Authority Partner to BISHTA and SPATA. Following the original, successful partnership with Hampshire County Council Trading Standards, a change was needed when Hampshire reviewed the resource they had available to offer to our industry (and others) and realised they could not provide everyone with the same high quality of service. So, we now look forward to working with our new Authorities to provide consumer rights knowledge, to help the industry. While each trade association organises a number of meetings each year, one recent BISHTA get-together was particularly memorable, as it was held in the Forest of Dean, courtesy of Ryan Birchnall and Forest Holidays to discuss hot tubs in business settings. The meeting was a hybrid format, with most attendees in Gloucestershire, with some attending online. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the existing member factsheets on holiday parks and homes; it was also to provide BISHTA with feedback on HSG 282. With this guidance now over five years old, there has been time for many views to be formed about what needs updating or amending. It is hoped to have another meeting later this year, potentially in a Forest Holidays’ venue in Yorkshire. It will soon be time for BISHTA and SPATA to reveal to members the categories and entry criteria for the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards 2023. Members are encouraged to arrange photos of their projects over the summer in readiness for entering the awards later this year. Finally, it is great to have an article from Jamie Smith reflecting on his time as BSPF President on the following page. BSPF President’s Reflections As Jamie Smith, the British Swimming Pool Federation’s President, comes to the end of his twoyear period in office, we asked him to reflect on his time whilst having the important role

he BSPF was formed in 1999, and members include BISHTA, SPATA, SPATEX, PIP, and the STA. The President chairs the BSPF board meetings made up of representatives from the above membership and is a figurehead with a multifaceted role, including activities such as the annual Industry Gala Evening, the President’s Weekend, the BSPF AGM and attending committee meetings involving the BSPF membership. Before Jamie handed over his chain of office at the annual Industry Gala Evening and Awards held during SPATEX in Coventry this year, we interviewed him about his time in office.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU AND HOW YOU MANAGED THE CHALLENGES OF BALANCING THE PRESIDENCY WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE AND WORK ROLE RUNNING THE LONDON SWIMMING POOL COMPANY? It was an exceptional period in which to carry the mantle of President! I certainly could not have foreseen that we would not be able to see BSPF members in person for nearly two years, but we all learned to work around the COVID-19 pandemic. Not having held an honorary presidential role in the past, I really didn’t know what to expect when I accepted the invitation to be BSPF President, but I am glad to say that the role is far from onerous. The BSPF office provides a lot of support with everything from information to organising events such as the President’s Weekend. I had to make time for various BSPF activities, but these didn’t impinge on my business’s day-to-day running.
WHAT DID YOU SET OUT TO ACHIEVE WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT, AND HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED THEM? I was pleased to have the opportunity to represent an industry that I have worked in for more than 20 years and feel passionate about. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my predecessor and wave the flag for the industry at national and international meetings, and I was excited at the prospect

of playing a pivotal role in the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards night at the annual Industry Gala Evening. Of course, it wasn’t possible to be at meetings in person, but that did not prevent me from taking part in key events online. For example, I attended a virtual meeting of WAPSA (World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations). It was fascinating to hear about our industry counterparts’ pool and spa experiences, issues, and opinions in countries like the USA, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, and Europe.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS AS PRESIDENT? Apart from working more closely with the BSPF team, there were two major highlights. One was the 2021 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards ceremony, which moved online for the first time due to the pandemic. My task involved pre-filming at our office; the film crew were excellent and made the whole process such an enjoyable experience. Watching the Awards Ceremony on the night made me proud to be part of this event and the BSPF for pulling off such a professional online event. It’s great that we were still able to reward outstanding work, despite not being able to host a live event. The second highlight was the President’s Weekend – this was a complete joy. By that time, we were able to come together in person and my wife Caroline and I were able to host this event in the historic town of Windsor. It was an excellent opportunity to network with industry friends, colleagues and peers, sightsee and enjoy downtime in great company and beautiful surroundings.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT?
Being President throughout the COVID pandemic, which started a month after I took up the Presidency. Without the lockdown, we would have had more face to face interactions and been able to travel for international meetings. For example, I would have attended European pool shows during that period, but it was impossible. Many of us transitioned to online meetings without too much angst and kept connected that way!

The chain of office was passed over from Jamie Smith to Pete Grinnall as the incoming BSPF President in a presentation at the recent annual Industry Gala Evening in February 2022. Pete was BISHTA’s Chairman from 2018 to 2021; he also sits on the association’s Technical Committee and is BISHTA’s representative on discussions relating to the wiring regulations on behalf of the industry. He has worked in the electrical industry for all of his working life and is the joint owner of Complete Spas. New Safety Initiative Launched By NWSF With Drowning Prevention Day taking place on 25 July, the NWSF has teamed up with a leading London creative agency to launch a new safety initiative to reduce accidental drowning fatalities
T
he National Water Safety Forum (NWSF) has appointed krow, part of The MISSION Group, to oversee the strategy, creative ideation and activation of its ‘Respect the Water’ initiative. Tragically, on average, around 400 people drown in the UK every year; because of this, one of NWSF’s principal aims is to reduce accidental drowning fatalities in the UK by 50% by 2026. Current drowning figures show a clear gender divide, with men accounting for the vast majority of those who die. With men accounting for over 80% of UK fatalities, the campaign is primarily aimed at them, but the safety advice is just as relevant for anyone who finds themselves in difficulty in open water, both at the coast or inland. John Quarrey, CEO of krow Group, said: “We’re thrilled about being appointed by the NWSF, and excited about working with the team to create new, disruptive ways of speaking to our audience to help save lives.” David Walker, Head of Road and Leisure at RoSPA, said: “We are incredibly excited to work with krow Group on what will be an important new phase for RTW and drowning prevention in the UK.” The Respect the Water campaign (RTW) was first established by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). It has grown into a national brand for water safety and drowning prevention campaigns through the NWSF, bringing together all strands of water safety across the UK in a bid to help reduce the number of accidental drownings. Gareth Morrison, Head of Water Safety for RNLI, said: “The RTW campaign aims to highlight the potential dangers of water, and encourage people to reconsider their actions and adopt safer behaviour, including what to do in an emergency. Working together with water safety organisations across the country
ahead of this year’s Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July, the awareness campaign runs throughout the year with a specific focus on the summer months during which the majority of UK fatalities sadly occur.” RTW is a galvanising campaign for the water safety sector with four key messages: • What to do if you/others get into difficulty • Show people both at the coast or inland how this affects their community • How to enjoy the water safely • How to reduce the likelihood of tragedy. We know from the research, nobody plans to have an accident in the water. Water safety organisations can shout louder together about RTW and how to avoid danger without demonising the water. Most campaigns fail when they expect a rationally engaged audience. Facts matter, but they need real stories to support them and show the emotional realities of accidental drownings and the devastating ripple effect on families.
WHAT DOES THE DATA SAY? • It’s too important to guess. Data-driven education is key for this campaign. • In 2016: 283 accidental drownings

• In 2020: 254 accidental drownings • In 2026: 141 accidental drownings would mean a 50% reduction. Over the next five years, the RTW campaign aims to help reduce annual accidental drownings by at least 113 lives. On average, over the past three years, eight people drowned every year as a result of entering the water because someone else was in difficulty. In 2020, 41 people drowned. That’s an increase of 500%. Plans for the campaign include education resources for schools and a cold water calendar to educate the public about when UK waters are at their coldest – especially for spring months when the weather gets warmer, but both coastal and inland waters lag behind in temperature. The campaign will be accessible and diverse to reach communities who have traditionally missed out on water safety information, plus there will be a toolkit available for supporting organisations. We need to change behaviour to save lives. Remember that sharing simple ways to stay safe could make a difference: • If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, float to increase your chances of survival. • If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard on the coast or Fire Service inland.
FLOAT TO LIVE • Fight your instinct to thrash around. • Lean back, and extend your arms and legs. • If you need to, gently move them around to help you float. • Float until you can control your breathing. • Only then, call for help, swim to safety or continue floating until help arrives.
COLD WATER Cold water shock is triggered in water temperatures lower than 15ºC. The average temperature of UK and Irish waters is 12ºC. So even in the summer, the water temperature is cold enough to cause cold water shock, which can steal the air from your lungs and leave you helpless in seconds. SPATA Publish New Standards Update The regularly updated SPATA Standards keep abreast of developments in building / installing swimming pools and spa pools and Amendment 3:2022 is the latest revision to these important industry standards. In this issue we take a closer look at the guidance which helps to ensure pools and spa pools are built to British and European Standards
S
PATA (and its forerunner, the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) has set the standards in the pool industry for more than sixty years. These standards are renowned throughout the world. As part of the SPATA membership package, contractors are provided with a comprehensive set of standards (and supplements) to provide guidance on pool construction standards expected by industry experts with British and European standards at their core. The 2017 version of the Standards has recently been updated with Amendment 3:2022. The changes are straightforward to find, as the black font used for the standard has been updated with green font for changes between 2017 and 2020 and with purple font used for changes from now onwards. SPATA has recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, from its formation in 1961, when six companies made a small but significant contribution to the future of the UK Pool industry to set up the ‘Association of Swimming Pool Contractors’. In these early days, it was recognised that industry standards would need continual review and updating. Several specialist sub-committees were set up to carry this out, which are in place to this day, served on by various industry experts. By the beginning of the 1970s, the Association’s reputation was established, and it was regularly consulted by government departments and others on matters of safety, trade practice etc. The membership reflected the wider spread of industry interests, and it was decided to recognise this in 1971 by changing the
Association’s name to the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA). Jumping forward to the present day, there has been an immense amount of work carried out by the trade association and many changes over the years. SPATA continues its work in those formative years and has embraced the industry’s changes and consumer demands to grow its many facets. Today the role of the Trade Association is to work with companies involved in building swimming pools and spa pools so that they are working to British and European Standards. Members are expected to work to SPATA Standards and abide by a Code of Ethics set out by SPATA, helping the pool industry firmly establish the high quality of work companies working to these industry recognised Standards. All new members of SPATA receive a hard copy of the standards, and any updates and supplements are made available to all members in digital format via the online Members’ Hub, which provides access to the standards, supplements and a host of helpful information and online resources, easily accessible for members and viewable on any digital device with internet access. Copies of the Standards (including Supplements) will also be made available to architects and other allied professionals for £495 per copy (Plus P&P), but pool installers and those companies that work predominantly within the wet leisure industry are expected to be SPATA Members, to benefit from the wealth of knowledge contained from within the publication. The Standards continue to evolve, with new legislation or regulations being considered, with SPATA’s Technical Committee leading the revisions on the Standards at their regular meetings, to check for any amendments or additions that need to be considered. An Energy Efficiency Standard For Domestic Outdoor Pools Is Coming Soon! In this issue, Will Dando, Plastica’s Technical Manager, and the UK expert on behalf of SPATA and the BSI, gives an overview of the work he has been involved with over the past four years with colleagues from across Europe to produce a new environmental efficiency standard for domestic outdoor swimming pools
W
ith energy prices rising, it is very timely for our industry to demonstrate how the topic of efficiency is vital, especially as a new European standard is due out as early as September 2022. It is called ‘Domestic swimming pools – Environmental performance efficiency – Performance evaluation, methodology, and classification of the use of outdoor pools and their equipment’. The rationale for the standard to be developed is based on: • Addressing the environmental performance of domestic swimming pools • Improving the efficiency of the products on the market and encouraging the development of energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly products • Promoting good practice in sustainability. As outdoor pools are less regulated than indoor pools, this standard is seen as an essential piece of work to encourage energy efficiency across the industry. This standard is applicable to outdoor pools, as defined in the domestic pool standard series EN 16582, intended to be permanently installed. The standard only covers the operational phase of the basin; it does not include all of the other product life cycle stages, e.g., extraction of resources, raw material acquisition, production, distribution, use and end-of-life processing. The pool industry is keen to show that selfregulation can be as effective as anything imposed by governments, and this standard will be a practical way of showing this. The standard has been developed by a Technical Committee (CEN TC 402), and it is in their Working Group 5 (WG5) that this collaborative work has been undertaken. The starting point was an experimental French standard that has been revised and updated with the help of experts from many European countries, especially those with national pool and spa associations like SPATA (and BISHTA). Having started with meetings in France, the impact of COVID meant that the rest of the meetings were held online to finish off

the work. The fact that there was a French standard to begin with, was very helpful and meant the discussions could quickly focus on what was already very good and what needed to be revised. While the final vote on the standard is going through, it has been essential to inform the industry that this standard is due to be published imminently, as it impacts equipment manufacturers (and their suppliers) and it also impacts pool installers. So far, free training has been provided in February (at SPATEX), in March (at an ISPE seminar), and in April (at a SPATA webinar). Some bespoke, paid-for industry training is being planned in the summer as more tools become available to help companies assess the environmental performance of their products and their pools. Here are some key points to look out for when the standard is published: • It is due to have 79 pages • six sections • four annexes The six sections are going to be: • Scope • Normative references • Terms and definitions • Design and evaluation • Environmental performance efficiency • Consumer information The evaluations are based on the following main areas: • Basin structure • Cover • Heating systems • Filtration pump • Hydraulic connections • Water treatment system • Lighting system
The four Annexes are: • Method for the evaluation of the energy performance of pumps • Complementary information related to calculation of flow velocity in hydraulic connection • Evaluation table of water treatment system • Communication of environmental performance efficiency (Evaluation of the pool as a whole entity) The aim is that there will be pictograms to show the pool’s energy performance visually in different areas, namely the equipped pool, the cover, and the heater. The experts who have been working on the standard are looking to produce some easy-to-use calculators that will reduce the amount of work on the industry in calculating the energy performance ratings.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? Once the standard is published, while it is not the law in the UK, the industry will be expected to use it; otherwise, companies may get left behind as others take advantage of showing their business or end-user customers the energy rating of their pools/equipment. From SPATA’s perspective, this standard will be added to the British Standards Online (BSOL) package available to members. There are 25 standards in the custom package, and the current cost is just £90 +VAT. Lone Working – Need To Knows “Lone workers are those who work by themselves without close or direct supervision.” Did you know, all employers have a legal responsibility to manage any health and safety risks before people can work alone? Here, Robbie Phillips, STA Pool Plant Tutor and Brand Ambassador, discusses how this applies to swimming pool plant rooms and wet leisure environments
S
wimming pools, spas and interactive play features all come in all different shapes and sizes. These facilities all have different designs, staffing structures and levels, but they all have one thing in common – they should all be the subject of robust risk assessments and controls to protect staff from unnecessary injury. The facilities we are talking about for the context of this article include: swimming pools, hydrotherapy pools, school pools, water parks, interactive play features and spa baths. In all cases, the risk involved in lone working should be minimised and included in the Normal Operating Procedures (NOP) and the Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and below are some key recommendations.
• Working alone in a pool. • Assessment of work activities, which might present a risk such as changing hazardous chemical containers. Also consider those working in pool areas alone, where they may be at risk from drowning – e.g., caretaker, non-swimmers working near pools.
COMMON POOL PLANT SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS
LEGAL REQUIREMENT
• Working in balance tanks, plant rooms, ducts and voids should never be done by a ‘lone worker’ due to the substantial risk. These areas are subject to ‘Confined Space Regulations’. • Egress routes in the event of power failure, emergencies etc. • Channels of communication in an emergency, traceability of staff, reporting and recording procedures.
Operating procedures must reduce risks and prevent the risks involved in their obligation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 for the health, safety and welfare at work of their staff.
Depending on the individual circumstances identified following risk assessment, a Line Manager will discuss providing the ‘lone worker’ with appropriate training and safety devices such as two-way radios, mobile phones, fall devices and panic alarms.
RELEVANT QUESTIONS Have your staff been… • Trained in appropriate strategies for the prevention of injury? • Briefed about local procedures for the area where they work including the pool, pool plant and associated buildings? • Issued with appropriate safety rescue equipment? • Made aware of the procedures for maintaining such equipment? Are your staff aware of the need to keep contact with colleagues, and do they know how to obtain support and advice Do your staff… • Appreciate their responsibilities for their own safety? • Understand the provisions for staff support by the employers and the mechanisms to access such support? A more detailed risk assessment may be specific to a particular instance of lone working e.g.: • Working with chemicals in the plant room.

THE RISK ASSESSMENT SHOULD CONSIDER: • Identification of the lone working individuals or groups exposed to risk. • Assessment of working conditions e.g., hazardous conditions such as dangerous steps, unhygienic conditions, poor lighting, hazardous chemicals, deep water, gas escapes, etc. • Assessment of particular work activities which might present a risk to lone workers e.g., delivery and dosing hazardous chemicals, changing chemical containers. • Assessment of necessary equipment and the capacity of the lone worker to manage any risky situations. • Evaluation of physical capability to carry out lone working e.g., pregnancy, disability, inexperience. • Estimate and assess emergency equipment that may be required. • Likelihood of incident occurring and having an impact on individuals and resources. • Severity of impact in terms of cost to the people, environment, assets, reputation and security.
• Confidence that the necessary control measures are in place. • What action needs to be taken to ensure that improvements are made.
TECHNOLOGY – LONE WORKING DEVICES Lone working systems and devices, where applicable, must only be used for their intended purpose; to improve the safety of lone workers. To use them for other purposes will compromise the integrity of the system and may deter lone workers from using it.
CONCLUSION In conclusion working in pool plant rooms can be a high-risk operation due to the hazardous chemicals, high voltage electricity etc. The release of toxic gases, as we’ve seen reported in the press recently, is a real risk that must be taken into consideration e.g., chlorine and or carbon dioxide gas. It is recommended: • Any work undertaken in the plant room should be conducted in the presence of another competent staff member. • All staff working in these areas should be suitably qualified and competent in the said plant room and in relation to the specific activity. • All tasks should be time-tabled to avoid lone working in the plant room(s). • Another member of suitably qualified staff should be available in the building, who can be summoned to the area in the event of an emergency. • Appropriate gas alarms should be installed and suitably situated to raise the alarm. CAN YOU TELL US THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF YOUR CAREER AT ALBIXON? I started at ALBIXON in the IT field. The turning point in my career came with my move from IT Manager to the position of Technical and Production Director, where I was able to significantly rollout the restructuring of the entire production. At that time, a large number of unfinished projects were completed and this immediately began to be reflected in the productivity of manufacturing and subsequently in the company’s results. It brings back many good memories, because at that time the
foundation stones were laid, which today help us in our further growth. In January 2019, an offer came to the position of CEO, which I accepted with humility and determination.
WHICH PRODUCTS DO YOU MANUFACTURE IN HOŘOVICE? In Hořovice we manufacture swimming pools, enclosures and technological shafts and walls. We also operate our own powder paint shop with a decoral production line.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HOŘOVICE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALBIXON? It was a gradual development that led us to Hořovice. ALBIXON was established 15km from Hořovice and gradually all of our existing areas became small. PWTAG VIRTUAL CONFERENCE
A Tale of Two Pools… And Much More Too! The latest online international conference held by PWTAG was bookended by two topically challenging papers – one from the UK, one from the Netherlands – and with much of great interest in between
H
eld at the end of March, PWTAG’s virtual conference – The Future For Pools – had over 80 delegates drawn from across the wet leisure industry plus a long list of experts who presented throughout the day. After a welcome and introduction from Chairman Janice Calvert, the sessions opened with Tom Devin, a PWTAG director with over 20 years’ experience designing pools. He spoke about a lengthy paper, just published on the PWTAG website, dealing in detail with how pools can target net zero carbon. There are principles: electricity use for circulation and water treatment, water use, heat recovery, auditing – and then implementation: designers, contractors, operators etc, all involved. Central to all this was marrying power requirements to good water treatment. There’s a lot to the detail, but it was interesting that well-established PWTAG guidelines are comfortably part of a carbon-sensitive operation. There’s a long way to go though – a survey suggests that 80% of UK pools are using more power than they should – and this is down to valves, pipework, pumps and hydraulics. Talking of ambitions for the future, towards the end of the day, Maarten Keuten from Delft Technical University introduced his own project – a groundbreaking pool opening later this year in Nunspeet, a small town in the Netherlands. It has two unique features. Firstly, it’s all-electric – no fossil fuels at all – with a photovoltaic roof and lots of heat pumps; and the various heating and cooling functions are inter-related. Then there’s the no-disinfectant Clear Pool Concept. The hydraulics of the pool maintain two distinct layers (rather than the conventional mixing). Barriers ensure that the top 50cm have a 30-minute turnover and the rest 90 minutes. The water is then subjected to pre-filtration, biological filtration (activated carbon with bugs),
ultrafiltration and UV. There should be no chemical treatment; monitoring will be through online ATP. Having touched on the future of filtration, a paper from PWTAG’s Steve Carder dealt with Total Pool Chemicals’ experience installing 3-micron ceramic membrane filters. He advised they’re virtually indestructible, clean themselves automatically, don’t hang on to dirt as long as sand (and thus reduce chlorine use) and are more economical of power and water. During the conference, James Amburgey from North Carolina University issued a Crypto challenge. He said pools are routinely failing, both in terms of disinfection and filtration. But significant improvements are possible. He has developed a so-called Excel model, which shows how changes can result in better removal of Crypto cysts. Sand depth is vital: 0.6m doubles the efficacy of a 37m/h filter and moves a 25m/h one up to 99.7% removal. And even a good filter (90% cyst removal) can achieve 99.9% if boosted by UV. You need to look at his paper but the conclusion is that regulations should reflect the realities better. Acanthamoeba is chlorine-resistant, and can give contact lens wearers keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). Bathers should ideally remove them, or wear goggles. Lastly, there was the Drs Lee: John on the new PWTAG domestic hot tub book and Susanne on adapting water safety plans to include conservation issues. New Showroom And Studio Provide Key Facilities For Superior Wellness With a new showroom just launched and a new marketing studio about to be completed, SPN paid a visit to Superior Wellness, the rapidly growing distributor, to take a closer look atthe company’s latest facilities

n March, Superior Wellness were delighted to announce the launch of their brand new hot tub showroom, located opposite the Chesterfield-based business’ headquarters in Broombank Park. The company, currently the world’s fastest growing hot tub manufacturer, moved into its new headquarters 12 months prior and in April 2021, the renovation of the new 10,000 sq. ft showroom space began. Set across two floors and with a retail sales office located at one end of the building, the new purpose built facility is one of the largest hot tub showrooms in the UK and offers a one-stop-shop for customers. It features a wide range of hot tubs, a swim spa, a testing area and much more. In fact there are over 20 hot tubs (although there’s space for up to 40) on display plus a swim spa and six of the tubs, with varying layouts and sizes, being readily available to test before purchase. The layout and concept offers an immersive experience for customers, showcasing the many benefits of water wellness. Two changing rooms with shower facilities for customers to access before and after testing the products are also available. Shortly after the showroom launch, the company’s new marketing studio was completed – a project that was developed to take Superior’s content to a whole new level. The large, bespoke space quickly became a second home to the marketing team as they started the lengthy process of taking marketing shots of each individual product that the company supplies. The new marketing studio includes several innovative features, all designed to improve the quality of the produced content. The lighting can be controlled through an app which allows all or each individual light to be dimmed and altered depending on the project. This means that Superior’s marketing team can now create stunning low light videos of the lighting features each hot tub has to offer. The app also allows for colour temperatures to be changed at the swipe of a button. Together, the new facilities have combined to provide the next step in the journey for this rapidly expanding company. Thankfully, as more than just a retail space, the launch of the new showroom has also meant more training opportunities can be offered to
both the company’s internal team and their growing partner network. In fact Super Wellness have already hosted several training sessions for their partners covering a range of topics and best practice demonstrations. Training was provided by the company’s specialist tech team who each provided insight into areas such as acrylic repairs, electrical requirements and much more. At the start of May, the company were thrilled to host the Chesterfield Champions meeting for Destination Chesterfield with a theme of health and wellbeing. Later in the month, Imogen Clark, the British 50m Breaststroke record holder, visited the Chesterfield showroom to try out the Helios Swim Spa from Platinum Spas to see if and how she may be able to incorporate a swim spa into her training routine. These days, they can be regularly seen in sports clubs and leisure facilities plus of course many types of holiday destinations. Holiday parks, lodges, cottages – they’ve all been quick to add them to provide a touch of the exotic to a UK-based holiday. Before the pandemic, they were increasingly popping up at music festivals and other outdoor events too! The UK’s holiday sector in particular has embraced hot tubs over recent years and according to research, they are one of the most requested items from customers researching holidays of this type online. Research also suggests that with the introduction of a hot tub, impressive premiums can be added to the overall price of a holiday and occupancy rates greatly improve too. So with statistics like these, it is no surprise that hot tubs have performed so well in the sector. A number of considerations have to be taken into account when it comes to maintaining models in these settings though. Their operation should be in accordance with the latest Health & Safety Guidance – HSG282: The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems – something which the hot tubs showcased within this feature all meet. Operating methods, costs and durability also have to be considered too but thankfully, manufacturers have been quick

hen it comes to the heating of water in swimming pools and spas in the UK, there really is a wide set of options available to suit an equally varied number of installation types and environments. Whilst environmental systems and heat pumps provide some of the latest sophisticated technologies to meet the needs of many owners, gas boilers, electric options, passive solutions and even solar power all play their part in the heating mix, and in doing so, offer flexibility for the many settings in which pools and spas can be found. And with energy prices escalating at a frightening rate, efficiency is more crucial than ever before. So whether it’s for a large, frequently used swimming pool, a busy winter spa or for a garden splasher that’s used for only a short spell during the summer months, in this issue we take a closer look at some of the non heat pump options that are warming up the waters of pools and spas up and down the UK.

Both heaters offer 3kW-18kW power ratings and are equipped with an integral thermostat (0°C - 45°C) and overheating cut out. For extra safety and peace of mind, Pahlén electric heaters are fitted with a flow or pressure switch to protect the element from damage. evelopments and advances in design and technology mean that lifts and access systems for swimming pools, spas and hot tubs are no different than other sectors within the wet leisure industry and disability access products are continually evolving with improvements to both the lifting units themselves and the various accessories that accompany them. New and improved materials and technologies have allowed product designers to improve what’s on offer and provide equipment for the ever-changing market of access. Whether the enhancements are needed due to advances in medical procedures, to accommodate increases in clients’ weight or to provide dignity and reassurance to people wanting simply to enjoy wet leisure facilities, there are companies dedicated to improving the lives of everyone who wishes to experience the relaxing and buoyant waters of swimming pools or the therapeutic and invigorating environment found in spas and hot tubs – and we take a closer look at the market in 2022.

Events Roundup With numerous exhibitions having been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic in the last two years, and with a small degree of uncertainty still hanging over both the events industry and international travel, in this issue we take a closer look at what’s on and where over the coming months both in the UK and further afield By Jon Wadeson

he COVID-19 pandemic badly affected a number of businesses around the world and none more so than those operating within the exhibitions and events sectors. With light finally appearing at the end of the pandemic tunnel at the start of 2022, firm plans are in place for many postponed events to finally go ahead. Of course, there is still some uncertainty surrounding what is a constantly evolving situation surrounding COVID, but most organisers and venues are now looking forward to the long-awaited resumption of ‘business as usual’ for their particular event. In this issue, we round up some of the key events that have relevance for the wet leisure industry taking place both here in the UK and further afield over the coming months.
AUSTRALIA’S SPLASH! SHOW RETURNS WITH A BUSY SCHEDULE With day-to-day normality finally returning to Australia, the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show will take place from Wednesday 22 to Thursday 23 June at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event is the largest pool and spa trade show in the southern hemisphere, attracting over 2,000 visitors from more than 27 countries and close to 200 exhibitors under one roof. SPLASH! has secured more than 5,000 square metres of exhibition space and as

always, a number of well-known brands will be in attendance, showcasing their latest products, innovations and services. Despite the exhibition itself running over just two days, the event provides visitors with the opportunity to attend additional days of conferences and training, network with industry peers at the National Awards, and see the best of the best within the industry. The Australian Swim Schools Association are running their annual Conference in conjunction with the show. Run across three days and featuring 19 sessions and six networking events, this year’s Conference has pulled out all the stops. The multi-day event will be jam-packed with speakers to inspire and expand the knowledge of attendees. There’s also a brand new Golf Day, a Swim School tour, Australian Swim Schools National Awards of Excellence dinner, iClassPro Customer Workshop & Social Event, as well as the annual Vorgee Welcome Drinks. The Commercial Pool Technician Program (CPT) delivers the required Aquatic Industry Qualifications to compliantly manage public and commercial swimming pool and spas in Australia. CPT is a new training programme that contains nationally accredited units of competency to ensure that participants are provided with up-to-date skills and knowledge and standards to manage public and commercial pool operations.
IAKS will also be hosting an event at SPLASH! It will address important issues around commercial aquatic operations and design. Speakers will be drawn from key sectors of the industry to address staffing, safety, and sustainability.
INTERBAD GATHERS MOMENTUM WITH NEW TOPICS AND PARTNERS interbad will be the meeting point for the swimming pool, sauna and spa industry for the 29th time from 25 to 28 October 2022. Together with the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry, Messe Stuttgart will offer the industry an ideal platform with a combination of a trade fair, a Congress and an attractive accompanying programme. “After the forced break due to the corona pandemic, we all are really eager to meet one another at the next interbad in Stuttgart,” said Christian Mankel, Managing Director of the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry. He added: “There’s a lot going on at present in the swimming pool and wellness industry. The potential in the areas of digitalisation, energy efficiency and climate protection, that was shown during the Innovation Days in the previous year, has developed very quickly and will also form the focal points of our Congress this year. The industry’s propensity to invest and the demand for technical discussions, networking, the live experience of technical developments and innovations for swimming pools, saunas and wellness are extremely high.” “interbad is a success story which keeps abreast of the times with its topics and will also provide this year future-oriented momentum for the forthcoming challenges,” said Claudia Döttinger, Vice President of Messe Stuttgart. The Project Team is currently starting to allocate floor space in the halls and search for topics for inclusion in the first-class accompanying programme of interbad. Another integral part of interbad is the Congress for Pool and Bath Technology, which will again be held in the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart. The International Sauna Association (ISA) will welcome its members to the Congress for the first time during interbad too.

The World Of Work
From the Great Resignation to hybrid working and nationwide labour and skill shortages, the world of work is seeing a lot of changes. It just isn’t the same old nine-to-five anymore as Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast explains
T
he how, why and where of work has changed more since the pandemic than at almost any time in my entire working life. Turn the clocks back a couple of years and the hot topic concerning the work place was that elusive work-life balance. Labour and leisure were seen as separate; one was a necessary evil in order that you may enjoy the other. It was the inheritance of the forties way of working – 50 weeks in the factory followed by a fortnight in Brighton. Even before the pandemic, people were muttering about job satisfaction; about choosing a career where they felt they made a real difference. A year after COVID hit, surveys showed that a third of workers in the UK were planning on quitting their jobs, either for something new or a new life outside work and the term ‘Great Resignation’ was coined. Out of a staff of 32, one person left Golden Coast for something new. It seems that working here isn’t too bad.
CLOCKING ON I like to make an early start. I’ve been out of the saddle recently due to a mixed bag of foul weather and an unpleasant brush with COVID but generally I like to cycle to work and that gets me in good and early. (I won’t say quite when but I like to kick off the day with a fresh coffee and Yesterday’s Quiz with Greg James.) While BBC Sounds mutters away, I like to make sure my office door is open; a little thing, but an important one.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE There are more job vacancies than unemployed in the UK for the first time since records began. This affects the entire economy but bites more in some areas than others. There is a skills shortage crisis in building and construction and for the last two years the Wet Leisure Industry Survey has noted that difficulty in finding skilled staff is one of the biggest challenges businesses face. Did a lack of skilled people act as a break on the growth in pool construction that staycations rather then vacations brought about? It would certainly have made doing that work harder.

to find new ways of keeping in touch with our customers. We now have two sets of offices equipped for Zoom and Team meetings and I confess that I’ve been pleased at just how efficient and effective those meetings are. The amount of motorway miles that we have saved and the amount of doughnuts we haven’t eaten doesn’t bear thinking about but to my mind, nothing can ever replace a good old analogue face to face get together.
SHARED GOALS. SHARED REWARDS I doubt my working day is much different to many other managers in the industry but as with any business of a certain size there is an ongoing necessity to get together with people to discuss a multitude of issues from the performance of our business and finances to suppliers and Human Resources. Wherever someone works in the business we always make it clear that his or her input and ideas are valued. That we know they make a difference, one that leads to business growth and they are rewarded for that. Fostering that team spirit is probably one of the most important things myself and other managers do.

In the past, most managers worked their way up from the shop floor. The trend nowadays seems to be that they get a qualification in management and then find an industry to work in. I don’t know how true that is in our industry but I do know that by the time I came to be Managing Director at Golden Coast, there weren’t many jobs in the business that I hadn’t tried my hand at. That breadth of experience helps me relate to every member of our team. Whether it’s chatting with the drivers and getting feedback on everything from their favourite customer or tea and cake stop, to their opinion on how well business is going or just observing the various elements of the business in action, I do like to maintain a finger on the pulse of Golden Coast.
JOB SATISFACTION I am lucky to work in an industry that I enjoy being a part of. I think what we provide for our customers – health, wellbeing and fun in the shape of pools, spas and saunas – benefits those people in lots of ways. We play our part in making the industry reduce its carbon footprint and we run a business that is enjoyable and satisfying to work in.
