SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.
leisure facilities in north Wales, it seems to me that there’s a lot right here in the UK that we often overlook and the scenario above is perhaps an increasing possibility.
With that being the case, it’s all the more important to be informed of the latest developments within the industry. So with the focus back on this latest edition of SPN, inside we’ve a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche sector which offers flexible and bespoke solutions for both domestic and commercial markets alike – along with a Project Showcase which perfectly demonstrates their advantages. High-end hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands.

With recent news headlines in the UK and around the world consisting of pretty much daily reports of what can only be described as doom and gloom, it’s all too easy to switch off or even overlook stories that could affect our Industry in the not too distant future. For me, one such story came courtesy of the ONS (Office for National Statistics) which reported recently that overseas visitors to the UK this year were at record levels. A surge in tourist numbers during the spring plus high levels across summer has meant an annual rate of growth at 8% – and this was despite terror attacks in Manchester and London. It is of course largely as a result of the weaker pound which in turn has meant fewer Brits travelling overseas. Another story was that the locals of many traditional holiday destinations are now starting to protest at what they see as an invasion of tourists which are affecting their day to day lives. With more people arriving and less people leaving, combined with this overseas unrest it got me thinking. In the short term, is the UK going to be seen in a different light in terms of a holiday destination? If so, our industry could be about to reap the benefits of increased investment in the holiday and leisure sector. Of course, time will tell but having just holidayed in the UK myself, and enjoyed a hot tub, pool and a host of other fantastic
We’ve also an in depth look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the swimming pool season whilst simultaneously reducing the maintenance and costs of pool ownership. Safety flooring is also covered in this issue and we take a closer look at the available under-foot options and provide information on making wet leisure environments a safer place for all. Exhibitions get a look-in too as we preview Piscina & Wellness Barcelona, Cologne’s aquanale and a relatively new show – Holiday Park & Resort Innovation at the NEC. As if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his opinion on pros and cons of new technologies, whilst the STA dispel some of the myths around skin irritation and water quality. We’ve also a piece on canine hydrotherapy so you can’t say we don’t cover a wide range of topics! There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our roundup of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here the UK and further afield. So with everything covered, hopefully we’ve provided something for everyone in this latest issue. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Chalcroft Completes New Facility For Searles Leisure Resort Situated on the Norfolk coast at Hunstanton, Searles Leisure Resort has been offering family breaks for more than 80 years. To cater for the unpredictable British weather, the resort boasts both indoor and outdoor pools and for the challenge of upgrading its facilities ahead of the busiest period of the year – the school holidays – it selected specialist construction contractor Chalcroft Building Services. Ensuring poolside fun even in poor weather, Chalcroft worked collaboratively with Searles to design and build a new indoor interactive splash pool with dual slides, as well as the provision of a new reception, activity areas and a viewing space for parents. The scope of works also covered refurbishment to the popular outdoor pool, which included a new external surround for safety and enhanced landscaping for aesthetics with the new facilities representing an investment in excess of £1m. Rob Copeman, Operations Manager at Chalcroft Building Services explained: “As the holiday season was looming, there could be no compromise on timescales and from the point of re-design, we had only 18 weeks in which to complete the project. As we’re well-versed in live-site and deadline-driven

construction, we were confidently able to meet Searles’ important schedule and the facility was opened to eager holidaymakers on time – a gratifying moment for us all.” Resort Director Paul Searle added: “Guests choose Searles not only for our beautiful location, but the huge amount of amenities we can offer to keep families amused, active and happy. Wet weather activities are crucial to fulfilling this promise which is why we chose to invest in upgrading our indoor splash pool – and having it ready
for the holiday season was non-negotiable. Chalcroft impressed us with their pedigree of working collaboratively with clients to design and build bespoke facilities within tight timescales, and holidaymakers who join us in 2018 and beyond will not be disappointed with the results.” Chalcroft 01553 776543 www.chalcroft.co.uk
Pool Rental Partnership Boosts Child Swimming Lessons And Pool Servicing Business It’s no secret that private pools are often under-utilised, for example, because children grow up and no longer use the family pool or busy family members only take an occasional dip. Such scenarios leave pools unused for many hours per week, but this could become a thing of the past. Two leading businesses – London Swimming Pool Company (LSPC) and Sports Generation – have combined their expertise to market Pool Rental to a wider audience. Pool Rental enables pool owners to rent their pool for private swimming lessons for children whilst

simultaneously benefitting from enhanced servicing of their pool and the potential to earn a significant annual income. Programmes are flexible, allowing pool owners to rent their pools for as many or few hours as desired. Sports Generation is a high calibre swimming coaching company founded in 2012 to
deliver superior quality shared private swimming lessons to babies, toddlers and children. LSPC designs, builds and services luxury pools, spas and wellness facilities in London and the Homes Counties, identical geographical territories as the Sports Generation venues. Both parties will invite pool owners to join the Pool Rental programme, giving them the opportunity to increase the number of pools offering swimming classes to children and babies. LSPC will help to widen the number of pools in Sport Generation’s pool
portfolio by offering Servicing clients the opportunity to get involved and benefit from renting their pools. Chris Walker, Head of Servicing at LSPC said: “Our service engineers will conduct surveys on pools as they come into the programme, and if required will undertake any remedial work needed to bring the pools up to the standard required for swimming lessons. Subsequently, we will provide regular servicing of the pools.” LSPC 020 8605 1255 www.londonswimmingpools.com

NEWS £35M DERBY SWIMMING POOL PLANS REVEALED Plans and artist impressions for how a new £35m Derby swimming pool complex will look have been revealed for the first time. Members of the public are now being given the opportunity to comment on the initial designs which include a 50 metre ten-lane swimming pool, a training pool and family-friendly wet play area. The main pool contains two booms and two moving floors, meaning the space can be easily adapted as required – ideal for managing the demands for clubs, teaching groups and casual swimmers. With seating for in excess of 400 spectators and timing equipment, the pool will also be capable of hosting regional competitions.
LIVERPOOL POOL PLANS STILL POSSIBLE DESPITE FAILED GAMES BID A plan to create a stunning outdoor swimming pool in Liverpool’s city docks could still go ahead, despite the city missing out on hosting the Commonwealth Games. As part of the city’s bid to host the 2022 Games, plans were put forward to create a 5,000-seat swimming arena near the city’s famous Albert Dock. If the games bid had been successful, the venue would have hosted the swimming events and post games, the spectator stands would be removed and the pool would open to the public as a lido. Mayor Joe Anderson said the failed games bid does not mean that the plans for the pool would not go ahead and the new public facility could still be built in the docks, however discussions have also been held that could see it created at an alternative location, south of the city at the Festival Gardens site near Otterspool.

Architects Appointed For University Sports Facility The University of Portsmouth has selected the team that will design its new state-ofthe-art indoor sports centre. FaulknerBrowns Architects, an awardwinning firm who won Sports and Leisure Architect of the Year’ at the 2017 Architect of the Year Awards, were selected following an internationally competitive procurement process. They will lead the team who will deliver the £50m new sports facilities that form part of the University’s Estate Master Plan. The building, to be situated on the University’s campus in Ravelin Park, will combine an eight-lane swimming pool, a fitness suite, sports hall, climbing wall and squash courts. It will provide firstclass sports facilities for training, recreation and competition, and designs will also consider other requirements such as its use for social occasions, exhibitions and events. The architects have challenging sustainability targets including minimising the building’s carbon footprint. The finished building will be flexible and adaptable to cater for a range of activities and to future-proof the building for years to come. University Vice Chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said that the aim is to have a building that both the University and the wider city community can feel proud of: “Our University sports

facilities have a critical role to play in the wellbeing, academic standing and quality of lifestyle for students and staff alike. This also offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with our community, which is why it is our intention to make a number of our new facilities, such as the swimming pool, open to schools and community groups.” The University will submit the planning application early next year and the first shovels will break the ground later in 2018. Former Soap Star Joins In Support Of City Pool Plans A former Emmerdale actress has joined supporters of the redevelopment of Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths. Charlie Hardwick, who played Val Pollard in the hit TV show, visited the historic building recently to celebrate the venue’s refurbishment. Charlie, from Wallsend in North Tyneside, was a regular at the city-centre Turkish Baths until they were closed in 2013. It was welcome news to her that the pool and baths will be given a new lease of life following a £5m refurbishment by leisure charity Fusion Lifestyle. She said: “I’m so thrilled that the Turkish Baths are being saved. “I remember the pool from swimming here as a child. When there were swimming
galas on the noise was so deafening, with hundreds and hundreds of kids screaming their mates on. “I didn’t know the Turkish Baths downstairs existed until later on, when I was introduced by the writer and poet Julia Darling. “We would meet here on a Tuesday and we would cook up plans. In a completely relaxed state where there was no stress – everything seemed possible when we were talking in the Turkish Baths.” Charlie also supported the community-led campaign group, Re-open Newcastle Turkish Baths, which sought to save the venue back in 2013. The campaign caught the eye of charity Fusion Lifestyle,
which runs over 90 facilities across the UK and successfully applied for planning permission to reinstate a public pool, Turkish Baths and other facilities last year. Anthony Cawley, operations director at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The City Pool is genuinely loved by the community and everyone is interested in the progress of the redevelopment. “I find it fascinating to listen to all the memories from visitors and those interested in the scheme – and Charlie is one of those people.”

NEWS REVAMPED SCOTTISH LIDO ATTRACTS RECORD NUMBERS One of Scotland’s last remaining open air swimming pools has attracted a record number of visitors after undergoing a major refurbishment. The Cumnock Lido in Ayrshire features a 25m long pool and for increased efficiency, the depth was reduced from 2.9m to 1.5m in the deep end and from 1.1m to 0.8m in the shallow end. The refurbished lido opened in mid-June and is the only heated freshwater pool north of the border. The population of the town is only around 2,000 yet the new facility welcomed almost 5,000 visitors in August alone. Last year, the pool enjoyed a record year, with 6,000 visiting across the whole five-month season.
PLANS UNVEILED FOR NEW IVYBRIDGE POOL Plans for a multi-million pound investment at Ivybridge Leisure Centre have been announced by Fusion Lifestyle and South Hams District Council and they showcase a much anticipated new six-lane swimming pool with a state-ofthe-art retractable roof. The plans, announced in partnership with South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council, marks the start of a three-year programme of proposed works to improve and modernise leisure facilities significantly in the area. The two local authorities put forward £8m of funding, after agreeing a 25-year contract with Fusion last year. The funds will enable Fusion Lifestyle to start the improvement programme and will be paid back over the course of the contract. As well as Ivybridge, sites including Meadowlands Leisure Centre in Tavistock, Dartmouth Leisure Centre, Quayside Leisure Centre in Kingsbridge and Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton are all set to see significant improvements too.

Ceramique Internationale Supplies Tiles To New Yorkshire Spa
Tile specialist Ceramique Internationale has completed a prestigious spa project, using its experience in tile design to add the finishing touches to Rudding Park’s new £9.5m spa. Continuing a partnership which spans more than ten years, Ceramique Internationale was selected to provide Rudding Park with new tiles for its pool and changing room areas, workingclosely with contacts at some of Europe’s finest tile manufacturers to provide the highest quality products. After more than a decade of planning and closely overseen by owners Simon and Judi Mackaness, the spa adds to the resort’s already sizable list of luxurious amenities, and incorporates an indoor swimming pool, which utilises natural filtered spring waters from Rudding Park’s 300-acre grounds, a Juniper Log Sauna, a Rasul, extensive Mind and Sense Zones, beauty facilities as well as an aweinspiring Roof Top Spa. The Roof Top Spa is the home to an infinity hydrotherapy infinity pool and a panoramic sauna, which both overlook Rudding Park’s landscaped gardens. The Roof Top Spa also includes two steam rooms, an ice fountain, a snail shower experience and a first-of-a-kind Rooftop Spa Garden. Working to a design brief, Ceramique Internationale’s Specification Sales Manager, David Longbottom, liaised with Italian manufacturer Casalgrande Padana to put forward a selection of tiles, with Rudding Park choosing the Amazzonia in Dragon Grey, to provide striking detail along the edge of the indoor pool. Some of the Amazzonia pieces were made specially in the UK in order to blend with
the pool’s bespoke drainage system. For the inside and surrounds of the hydrotherapy infinity pool and the indoor pool Ceramique Internationale worked with Italian manufacturer, Ragno, to specify its Landscape tile in Sabbia (beige). The tiles used on the pool surround feature a Bocciardato anti-slip surface to enhance the safety of guests, while those used within the pool tanks had a Natural surface to create an overall seamless finish. For the resort’s changing and treatment areas, Casalgrande Padana’s Marte range, in tones of beige and grey, was used extensively – the Marte Grigio Egeo and Botticino tiles on the walls and the Grigio Maggia and Grigio Egeo on the floors. Cameron Fraser, Director of Ceramique Internationale, said: “The Rudding Park Spa is destined to be one of the finest in the country and truly recaptures Harrogate’s spa heritage so we are more than delighted to have been able to play a part in its creation.” Ceramique Internationale Ltd 0113 231 0218 www.tilesandmosaics.co.uk

participant said: “We have found that the pool side of our business has diminished hugely over the last eight years. This started to take effect during the recession and has never recovered. We used to sell a huge amount of packaged in-ground pools (outdoor) where we financed the whole build through personal loans with our finance houses. This market has all but disappeared.” Jamie continued: “With the market moving in this direction, it’s crucial that pool companies are communicating the benefits of breathing life into existing pools. Our glossy, full-colour retrofit catalogue has been designed to help you do just that. “It spells out the advantages of upgrading and tells customers about the many ways they can improve their pool experience: from automatic dosing to automatic covers.”
A new edition of PWTAG’s authoritative book, ‘Swimming Pool Water’, is due to be published next month plus there’s a launch event scheduled too! The first edition of Swimming Pool Water sold 9,000 copies and was an authoritative, reassuring companion for all whose work involves designing, operating or scrutinising swimming pools. 2009s second edition sold a further 10,000 copies. Its guidance has been codified in PWTAG’s online Code of practice and PWTAG’s Poolmark accreditation scheme draws on both. So why a third edition? Well it’s not because a lot of the basics have changed in eight years. Core and essential principles are re-stated in the new edition, along with the necessary updating and broadening of scope to include swimming ponds as well as spas, hydrotherapy and other pools. This edition also attempts to incorporate the latest innovations within the industry. For the first time, it also includes direct input from the pool industry via PWTAG’s Industry Forum and has been partfunded by sponsors, Nuffield Health and Prominent Fluid Controls. Throughout this latest edition, the text has been reviewed, revised and added to. The ‘Management and training’ section has required new detail, to bring it in line with current pressures and responsibilities whilst ‘Filtration’ reflects the introduction of new methods. ‘Disinfection’ is still central, and new material on UV reflects its overtaking of ozone as the chosen form of secondary disinfection. The book is some 80 pages longer than the previous edition, and at £65 its price has gone up proportionately. To be among the first to get a copy, a launch conference is taking place on Wednesday 22 November at Drayton Manor in Staffordshire and attendees will have the opportunity to hear key speakers discuss its significance. The delegate price of £135 includes a free copy of the book.

Will Refurbishment Transform Your Business? With technology constantly evolving, shouldn’t your customers’ pools be doing the same, too? Customers are always keen to hear about how they can make their pools more energy efficient, eco-friendlier, lower-maintenance, or simply more fun. With everything from counter-current units to covers, LED lighting and automatic dosing — there’s always something to improve your customers’ pool experience. And not telling your customers about it could be costing you. The 2016 State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey found that refurbishment and renovation are consistently a stronger market than new builds. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “We’ve passed the initial heyday of pool building in the 70s and 80s. Back then, holidays abroad were rarer – making pool ownership attractive. And the boom has passed for subterranean pools as councils have become less and less likely to grant permits for excavating basements.” The latest survey results indicate that even entry-level packaged above-ground kits are in decline, too. Bude Holiday Resort Gets Poolside Waterball Hippo Leisure has refreshed the outdoor poolside at Bude Holiday Resort (Peter Bull Resorts) by installing an Interactive Waterball play feature in time for the summer. The colourful Waterball encourages children of all ages and abilities to use the pool and increase their water confidence. Toddlers enjoy the fun provided by a variety of low-level features. Fill n’spill buckets are filled via water jets on the Waterball. Children have fun tipping the buckets to spill water back into the pool. Interactive handwheels allow children to control the flow of water to the Waterball jets. Finally, themed cannon jets create a gentle flow of water into the pool. The Waterball’s four-armed Interactive Mast provides high-level surprise and anticipatory play to entertain older children. Children are sprayed by a waterwheel, showered by a shark shower, splashed by a tipping bucket and
squirted by a pipe falls arm feature. Kevin Prynne, Sport and Leisure Manager for Peter Bull Resort comments: ”Myself and the company Directors are very happy with the outstanding work that has been done by Hippo. The team who installed the Waterball were fantastic to work with. The Waterball has revived the outdoor pool area and is inspiring more families to use the pool. Installing the Waterball will hopefully help to encourage repeat visits to the Resort. Peter Bull Resorts is looking to buy more holidays parks in the future and will be happy for Hippo to work with them with regards to incorporating interactive water play at these parks.” Hippo Leisure 01752 771740 www.hippoleisure.com
Historic Thames Lido To Open In October The Thames Lido Restaurant and Spa is set to open at the site of the historical Kings Meadow baths in Reading this October. First opened to the public in 1902 as the Ladies Swimming Baths, the site is believed to be the oldest surviving outdoor municipal pool from the Edwardian period. The team from Lido Bristol were given the opportunity in 2013 to redevelop the site and restore the pool to residents of Reading after being abandoned for 43 years. The Thames Lido is an urban oasis for al fresco swimming, dining and socialising with the restored 25-metre swimming pool surrounded by a restaurant, tapas bar and Scandinavian-style spa. A short walking distance from central Reading, the site has a unique position overlooking the River Thames within one of the area’s largest green spaces. The 120-cover restaurant sits along the northern edge of the building, nestled between

the pool and the Thames. The kitchen will reflect the authentic Lido style that has been developed by Executive Chef Freddy Bird who has worked at the award-winning kitchens of the Bristol Lido since its launch in 2008. The pool will be open all year, 7 days a week from 6am to 10pm. Heated to a temperature of around 22-25°C, the pool will be flanked by a poolside relaxation area and bar with its own hot tub. The bar area is open to the public between 8am to 11pm, serving a tapas menu from midday and sweet offerings in the afternoon. There is also an 80-seat function room on the first floor overlooking the river. The spa facilities available at the Lido are focused on quality of service and centred on relaxation, indulgence and a healthy love of the outdoors. There will be a menu of bespoke massage treatments, alongside two poolside saunas.

NEWS PETITION CALLS FOR REBUILDING OF POPULAR ABERGAVENNY POOL A bid to rebuild the open air swimming pool in Bailey Park in Abergavenny, is gathering momentum, with more than 500 people having signed a petition and a campaigning group being set up, which will have monthly meetings. The petition, led by social media group Abergavenny Voice, is calling on Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) to consult with residents about bringing back the pool in Bailey Park. Campaigner Craig Titchener said the group plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign and apply for a heritage lottery grant and he estimates they will need to raise millions to bring the pool back to Abergavenny, but insists it is possible. Used in the summer months only, the pool was originally built in 1938 but was closed in the early 1980s by Monmouth Borough Council.
CENTER PARCS LAUNCHES PRESCHOOLERS SWIMMING PROGRAMME Last year STA created a bespoke baby and pre-school swimming programme for Center Parcs, called STAnley’s Swim Pups, and following its successful pilot, it is now being rolled out nationwide across all five Center Parcs villages. The STA programme allows young guests to participate in a structured swimming programme while on their short break. Led by trained STA Baby & Pre-school trained teachers, children are taught key water skills through play and a series of fun games that celebrate other aspects of Center Parcs. They learn essential swimming and movement skills and are rewarded with a STAnley Swim Pups certificate as a memento at the end. All of the bite sized activities are fun to do as a family and serve to build a child’s confidence in the water.

Waterco Supplies Community Funded Restoration Project When the Saltdean Lido near Brighton reopened to the public in June 2017, hundreds turned out to celebrate – many of whom had spent the past few years campaigning and fundraising in its honour. But most wouldn’t have been aware of the complications behind the scenes in getting the facility ready. Led by Aqua Platinum Projects and its preferred distributor, Paramount Pool Products, the professionals were faced with a pool that was beyond repair and the original, fabricated metal filters were totally corroded. In order to meet the latest specifications relating to commercial pool filtration, Paramount Pool Products turned to the brand they knew would provide a solution for the lido’s high volume of water and bather load – Waterco.
“When we were asked to be involved in this fantastic project, we were more than delighted,” said Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher. “Knowing how important Saltdean Lido was to the local community and the broader region meant a lot, and we were excited to be part of its transformation.” Taking just a few weeks to install the entire system, Waterco’s sophisticated filtration solutions include five SMD1800 Micron commercial sand filters and four 7hp BH5000 cast iron pumps for the main pool, and one SMD1800 Micron commercial sand filter and two Hydrostar 6hp pumps for the children’s splash pool. “Also installed were two 3hp Hydrostar pumps for the children’s water features,” added Tony. “Hydrostar pumps are high performance, corrosion resistant, thermoplastic pumps that are purpose built for commercial swimming pools, aquatic facilities and water parks.” Providing further filtration support is Waterco’s Ecopure glass media, which is manufactured from recycled glass and is considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional sand media. Awareness Campaign Highlights Deadly Legionella Hotspots Around The UK A Legionella Awareness Day campaign has uncovered that over 1,300 cases of legionella have been reported in the UK since 2014, listing Greater London, Greater Manchester and Nottinghamshire as three of the areas most affected. In the run up to Legionella Awareness Day, held by national water treatment company HydroChem UK, the company submitted 317 Freedom of Information requests to councils across the UK. In Greater London 163 cases have been reported over the last three years while in Greater Manchester 61 were reported and 44 in Nottinghamshire. Reports of the bacteria, which is most dangerous to children and older people during the
warmer months, have increased by 35% this year alone. The symptoms of the disease include high fevers, muscle aches, tiredness and headaches. Head of the campaign and Legionella Consultant at HydroChem UK, Paul Abbott is keen to make people aware and encourage them to stay safe against the potentially fatal disease. He said: “In the day-to-day we are constantly working with schools, businesses, care homes and hospitality and leisure facilities to make sure they are all preventing fatal levels of the
bacteria and looking after their water systems. “The campaign however was to make the general public aware and also give them the confidence to be able to ask their child’s school, their mother’s care home or even their own local gym if they are compliant. It would really surprise you how many well established places don’t have a process in place to take care of their water systems.” The awareness day was joined by a number of both national and international organisations, including The NLCE UK, The Water Management Society, Tenant Referencing UK, and the New Mexico Department of Health. To find out more about Legionella Awareness Day, visit the website www.legionellaawarenessday.co.uk or follow the conversation using #LAD2017 on Twitter.

Certikin Gets A Techie Refresh!
Following a summer reorganisation Certikin’s Technical team, with its unique bank of expertise and advice, is back stronger than ever before! From pools to spas and H&V to water treatment, it’s an invaluable resource which is free and accessible to all its customers. After the summer reboot, the 25-member Technical team is now altogether under ‘one roof’, indeed in one room, at Certikin’s Oxfordshire HQ in Witney. This consolidation is a natural progression, following on from the Certikin North Technical team moving down from Leeds to Witney last spring. Bruce Coppuck, Executive Sales Manager explained: “Always looking to stay ahead of the game, we felt that bringing all the technical teams together would increase the department’s efficiency and the sharing of expertise. The challenge was to do it without demolishing any walls and within the constraints of our existing building. “The solution lay with good design and planning and the introduction of new, modern desks, chairs and monitor arms that allow more people to sit in the same area without compromising
comfort or efficiency. The members of each division, such as Pools and H&V, are all now sitting in close proximity to one another. It works fantastically because often a customer’s technical query is two-pronged, involving more than one area of expertise. In addition, to 25 technical specialists we have two extra ‘hot desks’ for our Area Sales Executives (Reps) to sit at when they are in the office. It’s a win, win situation for the customer!” Jo Catterall, H&V and Auto Sales Manager, commented: “Although there are now physically more people in the Technical Office, the space feels much bigger. Not only has it enhanced communication and understanding between the departments, it has also been a boost for team spirit and camaraderie. We are all experts in our own field but we feel like one team now. And, there’s nothing like working in a newly painted, freshly carpeted office complete with new furniture, to lift the spirits on a drab autumn day.” Certikin International 01933 778855 www.certikin.co.uk

Martin Wears Moustache For Movember Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in December last year, 53 year old Martin Borley of Tanby Pools will be wearing his moustache for Movember and hopes many across the industry will too. Martin considers himself as extremely fortunate as it was spotted early and said: “I am one of the lucky ones – I caught it early! It’s simple really – if you deny you have it, or ignore it, you are not lucky. Around 12,000 men die in the UK every year (33 a day), many of these are preventable.” His advice is don’t be afraid to talk about it – confront prostate cancer together and said: “Initially I did wonder whether to go public with this – professionally I thought it could have been terrible – it has not been. I owe it to all the men out there – friends, colleagues and the pool industry to let them know the dangers of ignorance and denial.” If you would like more information about prostate cancer, please visit www.prostatecanceruk.org and if you would like to show your support a small donation of £5 gets you a ‘Man of Men’, the man-shaped pin-badge which has graced the lapel of almost every football manager and Sky Sports pundit in recent years. The same ‘Man of Men’ logo appears in the squad number on all EFL players’ shirts. With your help we can stop Prostate Cancer being a killer. Martin will explain more about his experience in the next edition of SPN.

New Type Of Flexible Poolside Grid For A High-level Look With its flexible 723 Design poolside grid, emco Bau has provided a unique way of covering pool overflow channels. This innovation consists of a rigid PVC cassette serving to hold tiles for moistureexposed barefoot areas with a thickness of at least 7mm. The product, which is suited for straight edged pool configurations, enables the covering of overflow channels with the tile material used on the pool surround, producing a seamless and visually appealing look. The PVC cassette is prefabricated at the factory so that together with the tiles its dimensions are pre-coordinated to suit site-specific frame conditions. At the same time the grid design guarantees water drainage while complying with standard bar spacing. The German manufacturer supplies the PVC cassette plus spare accessories and detailed plans together with laying and bonding instructions. With the new tile grid, the manufacturer is responding to the rising demand for aesthetically appealing high-level solutions, particularly within the domestic pool sector. The visible deck-level arrangement is formed by three rows of tiles running along the pool edge and mostly covering the PVC cassette under it and the overflow channel. With a current preference for tiles in dark or muted colours, the PVC cassette is available in deep black as standard but a white option is also available. The PVC cassette consists of grid bars to of high-grade PVC set at right angles tile the pool edge to guarantee optimum the bonding on site. The spacing between both individual profiles was selected to ensure water drainage and high load-bearing capacity. Individual adaptation of the tile grid to site-specific frame conditions is also possible. The PVC cassette is suitable for overflow channels with a width of between 150 and 300mm. The overall height, including tiles, may be between about 22 and 42mm, a while the individual elements achieve maximum length of 500mm.

Controlling Humidity And Evaporation In Commercial Pools Controlling the humidity and evaporation of a million litres of pool water 24/7 is just one of the tasks facing the new Heatstar Taurus EC – an environmental control system exclusively designed and manufactured for use in large municipal swimming pools and water leisure centres. A typical commercial leisure centre swimming pool can contain up to a million litres of water normally heated to around 28 or 29°C. The water evaporation levels from the surface of this type of pool can equate to hundreds of litres every single hour. This evaporated water must be removed from the pool hall air or else the humidity levels will rapidly rise resulting in heavy condensation occurring on the pool hall structure. This leads to rapid deterioration of the décor and eventually possible structural failure. This is just one of the tasks that the Heatstar Taurus EC is designed to deal with.
Heatstar Taurus EC units offer humidity control, energy recovery, fresh air, variable rate ventilation, mechanical cooling and renewable energy heating solutions. The specialist dedicated design of the Taurus EC overcomes all the traditional problems associated with operation in aggressive, corrosive and comparatively humid environments. The Taurus EC systems feature the latest energy saving approaches and are purpose designed for UK Building Regulation legal compliance. They can be specified with a range of technologies including EC digital fans, active energy recycling via a dehumidifying heat pump, passive recovery via heat recuperators, integral aerothermal heat pump and comfort cooling provision. The position of the control panel, pipes, air duct spigots and maintenance access can all be orientated during
manufacture to accommodate the ideal equipment room layout. For retrofit and refurbishment applications, the Taurus EC units can be custom-made, as necessary, to accommodate existing services and plant room space restrictions. Special ‘weatherproof’ models are also available for external positioning.
With its specialist design the Taurus EC has the capacity to deal with the very largest leisure centre or an Olympic size swimming pool complex. Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com
An Eco Pool That Integrates With Its Natural Surroundings Surrounded by the rolling Shropshire Hills, the Baron at Bucknell near Ludlow is a traditional free house country inn and is considered one of the region’s finest. When Michael Caffyn-Parsons from Inspired By Water happened to stay at the Baron at Bucknell, he struck up a casual conversation with co-owner Phil Wright. “He asked me what we did and I ended up showing him our brochures and website on swimming ponds, something he had not previously heard of,” Michael recalled. “As it turns out he was considering a swimming pool as he had permission to build some luxury garden rooms.” As the region surrounding the Baron at Bucknell is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Phil and his wife Debra liked the idea that guests could swim in a natural system that seamlessly integrated with the rustic landscape. Working with colleague Tim Gunning, a natural swimming pool engineer who has managed the
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 25&26_SPN_Oct_17_News_Eco.indd 25
construction of over 100 natural swimming ponds in the UK and Europe, Michael recommended a range of Waterco’s filtration and sanitation products for the Wright’s proposed new outdoor pool. “Equipment includes an Exotuff 30” Waterco Bead Filter, which is far superior mechanically and biologically to anything else on the market, and Aquamite 1.25 pumps which are also used to draw water through the reparation area pipework,” he explained. “The system also includes a MultiCyclone MC 16, which we have fitted with our own automated valve so it can be flushed out by remote control.” The MultiCyclone is a key feature of the system as
it helps remove debris through the process of centrifugal filtration prior to reaching the filter. Furthermore, the addition of the automated valve on the waste ensures that the sediment bowl is cleaned regularly with minimal effort. “The Aquamite pump is ideal for recirculation systems used in conjunction with ponds and water features due to its compact design and energy efficiency,” added Michael. “The range of Exotuff bead filters are the market leaders within this field due to the sturdy tank design along with the unique lateral arrangement and water distribution headers. This ensures the best mechanical and biological filtration is achieved at all times.” Officially opened on the 19 May 2017, the 10m x 5m x 2m swimming pool looks like a natural oasis, where guests swim in pristine water filtered by plants, microorganisms, and Waterco’s superior sanitation products. Grayfox And Heatstar Help Pool And Spa Facility Rise From The Ashes Set in grounds of 320 acres, the Kenwick Park Estate near Louth in the Lincolnshire Wolds is a magnificent leisure and lifestyle complex. At its heart is a 34 bedroom Country House Hotel with its own pool and spa facility. Within the last few months a new stateof-the-art pool and spa facility has opened to replace the original pool hall which was devastated by a fire. The opportunity to extend and enhance this luxurious pool and spa as a design and build project was won by Grayfox Swimming Pools. Working within a larger design team Grayfox had input into all key aspects of the entire facility and the result of the £5m refurbishment is one of the most striking and impressive pool and spa facilities in the UK. Grayfox appointed and collaborated with Heatstar with whom they have a long 20 year history as they consider their Advanced Swimming Pool Climate Control Systems to be the best on the market. Nigel Gray of Grayfox Swimming Pools explained that the plant room presented a big challenge for the team. “We had to be very exact and creative in the plant room area as the requirement was to fit filtration and climate control systems for three wet leisure facilities within a space that was originally designed just for one.” The Grayfox team rose to the challenge and
solved the problem with a steel framed structure to create a mezzanine level in the plant room to hold the Taurus unit along with many other parts. Then the units had to be craned in over the building before the roof was installed and dropped into the plant room space. Absolute accuracy was needed in this operation as the units had to drop in with just a 25mm clearance. The operation was helped enormously by the fact that Heatstar environmental control units are designed to offer a modular construction – this enabled them to be installed in four pieces. The Heatstar unit chosen to handle all the
Kenwick Park pool and spa environmental control requirements was a Heatstar Taurus HPXF 180 Super. In addition to the modular construction and the overall quality of Heatstar units Grayfox identified several other advantages. Nigel Gray commented that “Heatstar units are easy to understand by the client, superbly energy efficient, value for money and they look good!” Grayfox Swimming Pools 01427 788682 www.grayfoxswimmingpools.co.uk Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com
Heliotherm – The Air Source Heat Pump For All Seasons According to Earth Save Products (ESP), swimming pool designers and installers can sometimes struggle to utilise air source heat pump (ASHP) technology to heat pools and the pool environment, but the company believes it has the perfect solution. Their range of Heliotherm units reliably achieve flow temperatures of 62°C at their normal setting with no significant reduction in efficiency. This allows pool designers to use flow temperatures of 55°C+ enabling all year round heating without any issues. These German designed ASHPs are manufactured in Austria and perfected to work in extreme weather conditions – more severe than could ever be experienced in the UK – and still achieve industry leading performances. ESP advise that they’re the only unit that can be directly fed from PV (photovoltaic) and will always use this energy first before drawing from the grid.

They can be monitored remotely by the manufacturer and constantly ‘tweaked’ to optimise performance. These units were originally designed for space heating and hot water production for domestic and commercial buildings but their scope and performance makes them ideally suited for the swimming pool market. ESP believe this is the first real ASHP which can satisfy the demands of an all year round pool. Heliotherm heat pumps range from 4kW-110kW, but if designed in a modular configuration an unlimited kW output range can be achieved. Operating at 62°C with no ‘wear and tear’ or reliability issues, they are desig ned to work at high temperatures with minimal stress and no over-gassing. ESP say their Heliotherm heat pumps achieve what no other ASHP can
because of their revolutionary patented technology. Therefore, if you have a client requesting ASHP to heat their pool and pool environment, you can now choose one of the most reliable and economical solutions available. Earth Save Products 01865 598158 www.earthsaveproducts.com

New Headquarters For Cornish Hot Tubs Cornish Hot Tubs are a local family run business who have over recent years grown the business to become one of the leading hot tub suppliers in the south west. John Roberts initially started selling hot tubs in 1999 following his difficulty in selecting a hot tub which was suitable for his wife who required hydrotherapy. As sales grew John was soon joined by his son Tim and in 2001 they formed Cornish Hot Tubs. From humble beginnings, the company has expanded to become the largest L.A. Spas dealer in the UK and John and Tim together lead the hugely experienced Sales and Service Teams. The business provides a professional, high quality service and has many happy customers from all over Cornwall and Devon and following their growth, are now in the process of opening a purpose built Headquarters for the successful hot tub business. With a grand opening scheduled for October, the company are in the final stages of completing what will be an almost 4,000sq ft indoor facility located in Indian Queens that will include admin, service, distribution and according to the company, the largest selection of hot tubs in Cornwall. Ultralift Keeps Your Investment Covered When you’ve spent a lot of money on a high-end hot tub, you want to make sure that your investment is protected. Fortunately, with years as a leading independent supplier to the industry, Golden Coast has learned a thing or two about looking after spas and hot tubs. Keeping the tub covered and protected is great, but without a lifter, opening and closing must be done manually – which can be timeconsuming and challenging. For installers, specifying and fitting cover lifters can be equally as time-consuming and challenging… or it was until Golden Coast added an exclusive cover lifter which can work with any type of spa. The Ultralift range of cover lifters is built to an exceptionally high specification across the board, and its intelligent design maximises its versatility, while minimising time and effort during installation. Suitable for all major brands, Ultralift offers a perfect fit for freestanding, in-ground, or built-in tubs. What’s more, it can even be installed without drilling holes into the deck or hot tub surround. The cover’s unique pivot design makes using your cover a breeze and the handle allows you to open and close from either side of the spa. And because it can be opened/closed that bit quicker, heat loss is minimised for a more energy-efficient spa. The ground-breaking range includes Visionlift. Its powerful hydraulics and clever design mean that the cover drops alongside the
Darlly’s New Design ‘Brush and Flush’ Cyclone Filter Cleaner The redesigned Cyclone Filter Cleaner from Darlly has been modified to accommodate a cleaning fluid chamber, a new uni-body that eradicates leaks and has longer brushes to clean deeper in to the pleats. Regular use of the new Cyclone allows filter cleaning in less time and it prolongs the life of the filter cartridge by restoring the treated filter cartridge to its previous condition. The new Cyclone Filter Cleaner is a groundbreaking pool and spa filter cartridge cleaning device which has been ergonomically designed by Darlly. Precision engineered and built to last using the highest quality materials together with top quality bristles, this trigger-controlled unit will reduce filter cleaning time and ensure a much cleaner filter, removing a lot more dirt, debris and grease than traditional cleaning devices. The bristles of the brushes have been designed to be tough yet sympathetic to the filtration media. This is the first device on the market that uses brushes combined with high-power water jets and a cleaning fluid chamber which ensures the ‘Brush and Flush’ action not only makes for effortless yet intensive filter cleaning, deep into the cartridge pleats, but also is better for the environment because less water is used! KLAFS Provides Tennis Star With “Perfect Conclusion To The Day” Whether in a hotel or a world-famous tennis complex where he competes professionally, Tommy Haas has rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy the “perfect conclusion to the day” – a thorough session in the sauna. “The sauna is simply optimal to regenerate and mentally calm down after a long, demanding day spent training or competing,” said the 1.9m tennis ace. He also knows how important the topic of regeneration is for professional athletes in particular. Haas is convinced that “anyone who demands a lot from his body also has to give something back at every opportunity”. And so he increasingly harboured the desire to have his own sauna at home as well. Since he particularly liked the traditional Finnish sauna culture with more natural experience, he opted for a garden sauna. After consulting extensively with the experts at KLAFS, Haas finally opted for the most recent garden sauna model from one of the market leaders. The ‘Torni’ – with its clear, modern design – is a real eye-catcher in anyone’s garden. From a technical perspective, the popular tennis star was also convinced by
his choice, thanks to its sophisticated and weatherproof timber-frame construction with strong thermal insulation for low energy loss. Two extras in particular are noticeable in Haas’s new garden sauna. The panorama window, which stretches across almost the entire width of the cabin and through which he can enjoy the amazing view of the Bavarian countryside leading up to the Alps, and the unique and patented Sanarium concept. “This makes it possible for me to enjoy five different sauna types in my new garden, as the mood strikes. It’s ingenious!” he said. KLAFS GmbH & Co. KG +49 (0)791 501-0 www.klafs.de

Minimalist Design Of NIVEKO Pool Delights Swedish Client With a range of quality pools that can be customised to suit a wide variety of needs, it’s no surprise that NIVEKO swimming pools are being regularly installed right across Europe and are delighting even the most discerning of customers. And this recent installation of a 10.35m x 3.60m NIVEKO Overflow Evolution pool is no exception. Set into the decking area of this stunning southern Swedish home, the owner, Mr Bergman, was extremely pleased with his decision to choose a NIVEKO pool and commented: “I own a house with an amazing garden, of which I am deservedly very proud. It had always been a great dream and wish of mine to have an overflow pool in the garden. I was looking for a minimalist design that would fit in with the style of the house and garden and I found the NIVEKO Evolution pool,

GERMAN STATE INVESTS IN PUBLIC POOL FACILITIES In an effort to revive their public swimming pools, the German Swimming Federation (DSV), recently announced that the federal state of Hessen will be launching a pool investment and modernisation programme in 2019. The initial investment will be €50m but it is expected that scheme will grow as further projects apply for funding in 2018. According to Federation Vice President Wolfgang Hein, the number of children who learn to swim is decreasing in Germany. For this reason, funds should be used for ‘functional’ pools, rather than ones intended for leisure. Hein believes that having pools in closer proximity to schools will also increase the likelihood of school-age children learning to swim. With German swimmers largely absent from the international podium in recent years, a rebuild from the bottom-up should only do the nation good.

which offered everything I needed. I’m very happy with the finished pool, and whenever visitors come, they’re always delighted and have lots of questions about the type of overflow it has. “I am proud to recommend NIVEKO pools and Söderro Gard, the firm that installed the pool.” Finished in White Polystone and featuring a builtin counter-current jet and slatted cover, the design of NIVEKO’s Overflow Evolution pool produces a clean and consistent area between the water level and the pool surroundings with the unique solution being further emphasised by the minimalist design of the pool edge.
Germany’s Menerga Invests In Trainees In August, sixteen trainees and apprentices began their professional qualifications at ventilation specialists Menerga GmbH. As a result, the company, with in excess of 400 staff, now employs a total of 37 trainees and apprentices. “The topic of professional qualification enjoys high priority at Menerga. For years, we have placed great importance on providing good starter employees with basic and ongoing training, and to retain these trainees and apprentices in our company when they have completed their qualification. The training team consists of a total of six training supervisors: three colleagues from the Human Resources Department, and one supervisor who has been permanently assigned to what we call the ‘Trainee Lab’, said Stefanie Bekes, Director of Human Resources. “When making our selection among candidates for trainees and apprentices, we mainly take a close look at their aptitudes and knowledge, and not primarily at their school grades. As a result, we have
trainees with many and various kinds of schoolleaving diplomas, ranging from German lower secondary schools to high schools preparing for university matriculation – and likewise including those who have failed to achieve diplomas. Our aim is to support and encourage these young people and to give them a chance, even though they may not have immediately started off on the best path.” The 16 new trainees, whose ages range from 16 to 27, are broken down into eight different qualification professions in administration and production. Menerga included a total of three new qualification professions in its portfolio. For example, beginning this year Menerga will for the first time be training female Industrial Business Management Assistants for Dialog Marketing – as well as Industrial Mechanics and Construction Mechanics – the latter two attracting no fewer than two young women for these jobs this year. They excelled against their male competitors and have decided to work in professional environments usually dominated by men.

Piscine Laghetto And Belgian Start-up Join The Fluidra Family Fluidra has acquired 80% Blue by Riiot of the Belgian start-up Riiot Labs, the creator of an innovative piece of technology for testing pool water that sends the results to any mobile device. This operation has built on the relationship that started a few months ago with a distribution agreement for France, Spain and Italy, and that in the short-term has been marked by the success of this smart device, marketed as Blue by Riiot by Fluidra. The floating tester connects via Bluetooth or Sigfox to an owner’s mobile telephone or other mobile device to give information about the state of the pool water (temperature, salinity, pH level, redox potential and

conductivity), which can also be synchronised with the pool dealer’s IT system. Blue by Riiot has been recognised at the Foire de Paris and the Global Piscine trade fair in Lyon, and at the beginning of the year it won a CES Innovation Award in the Smart Home category. This acquisition came about just a few days after the announcement of the purchase of the Italian firm of designer above-ground pools, Piscine Laghetto. Piscine Laghetto produces pools as a decorative feature in any environment, whether that be gardens, terraces, rooftops or indoor spaces, and it has a good choice of pools for small spaces. The pools are designed to make even the dreams of the most exacting architects come true and are quick and easy to assemble. With an HQ is in northern Italy (Cremona), Piscine Laghetto has a turnover of €7m from business concentrated in Italy and France. Fluidra’s idea behind these acquisitions is to provide users with a wider range of products focused on high quality, design and innovation, as well as concentrating on the Internet of Pools so that pool owners and dealers alike are connected to their pools.
SPASA Australia Announces Acquisition Of SPLASH! Brand The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia (SPASA, has announced the acquisition of the SPLASH! brand from The Intermedia Group (TIG) and Interpoint Events (IE). The move follows a recent strategic alliance with Australia’s Pool+Spa magazine, and forms the next step in SPASA’s plan to create a more integrated and unified communication platform for the Australian pool and spa industry. The acquisition of the brand includes both SPLASH! magazine and the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show, and took effect immediately. “Our vision has always been a united industry working together across Australia to help promote and support our members. It is without doubt that SPLASH! hold the largest and most attended industry exhibition in the country along with their successful magazine publication. We completed an extensive due diligence process and I would like to thank Lindsay and the Board Members of SPASA Australia, for the professionalism and time they

have invested in looking after the interests of members and bringing this acquisition to reality,” said Lynley Papineau, Chairman of SPASA Australia. “The opportunity was made possible due to the merger of SPASA QLD, SA and NSW/ACT and combining the assets of the entities. There are exciting times ahead and we are looking forward to working with TIG and IE to build on the success that they have created in the SPLASH! brand.” Over the past 20 years, SPLASH! developed to become the premier expo, magazine and digital platform for the Australasian recreational water trade. The magazine and trade show will operate exactly as before in a seamless transition of ownership. Key staff will remain in place and the magazine will retain editorial independence. Additionally, TIG and IE will continue to oversee the publication of the magazine and the organisation of the show under a consultancy agreement, ensuring the same standards continue to apply to both entities.
Fluidra Completes €4m Pools Installation For Asian Games Fluidra, the listed Spanish multinational group devoted to the pool and wellness sector, is completing the works for the installation of the four swimming pools that will be used for the aquatic disciplines of the 2018 Asian Games, a competition to be held in August of next year in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The project, valued at 56.4 trillion rupiah (about 4m Euros), covers the four swimming pools that will host the activities related to competitions such as swimming, synchronised swimming, water polo and diving as well as the installation of a warm-up pool for the athletes. Three of these swimming pools have been built with galvanised SkyPool metal panels instead of concrete. In this project, Fluidra uses various technological solutions for the hydraulic, filtration and disinfection systems, with UV disinfection, automatic metering equipment and automatic control and regulation all included. All of the swimming pools, except for the warm-up pool, are waterproofed with a PVC liner. Furthermore, for the main competition pool, Fluidra will install a mobile bulkhead that will allow different activities to be carried out simultaneously. Other important elements that will be included are the equipment and materials for the water polo and diving competitions, as well as the timing system. Sports competitions will take place in both Jakarta and Palembang – which is in the south of the island of Sumatra. Preparations for the 2018 Asian Games have been made significantly easier for Fluidra due to the company having an office in Jakarta for the last five years. Xavier Pavon, the General Manager of Fluidra Asia, stated that: “The Asian Games is the most important sporting event on the continent after the Olympic Games. That’s why this is a very prestigious project.”

Working Together To Improve The Industry F
ollowing the fantastic achievements of the British athletes at the recent World Swimming Championships in Hungary, this has given the industry a great boost and a new set of fantastic ambassadors to work with and support. The 11 medals (5 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze) left the Brits in second place overall. The results from the World Para Swimming Championships are not known at the time of writing this article, but are being held in Mexico City from 30 September to 7 October, so hopefully there will be more good news to come from this event. Athletes at World Championships will quite rightly be competing against each other, but they will also talk about the friendships that they develop with their fellow competitors. The pool and hot tub industry around the world has the chance to get together later this year in Cologne, during Aquanale and the focus of attention will be on how to work together to improve the industry across the world. It is hoped that there will be representatives from many nations converging on Cologne to plan the formation of a truly international forum for the whole industry. The annual conferences for BISHTA and SPATA are on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 October, respectively. For BISHTA’s annual conference, there will be a follow up presentation from Hampshire Trading Standards’ on knowing your rights as a trader and what consumers are legally entitled to expect from you. There will also be sessions on workforce qualifications, and updates on HSG 282 and the latest news on the European standard (EN 17125). There will also be an election for a new Chairman, as Alex Kemsley will be stepping aside, having undertaken the role since 2014. SPATA’s
With another summer season now behind us, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks at a number of events that are taking place over the coming months annual conference also offers a session from Hampshire Trading Standards on the Consumer Rights Act and there will be a wealth of information in the other sessions on updated standards and guidance. Both BISHTA and SPATA members are also members of the BSPF and this AGM is due to be held on Tuesday 29 November in Andover. Feedback on the BSPF will be sought at both the BISHTA and SPATA annual conferences to present at the BSPF AGM and the next President will be Will Dando. Nominations have been sought for a new Vice President and the successful person will take on the role at the Industry Gala Evening being held at SPATEX. SPATA will be holding some seminars at various locations (including online) between late October and early December to update members on various topics of interest. Please look out for copies of SPATA News sent out electronically on a Friday, or contact the office if you need more information. The plan is to hold events in five of the six regions and the sixth region will have an online meeting (available to members from other areas as well). Following the success at the 2016 awards, the excitement is building as we wait to learn who will be the winners of the European Pool and Spa Awards for 2017. The shortlisted UK companies are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be amongst the award recipients, and the awards presentation event is being held at SPATEX in January 2018. POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
SPATA Inspectors Helping To Raise Standards In The Industry In this edition, we take a closer look at SPATA Standards along with the team of inspectors that provide SPATA members with support and guidance
S
PATA is very fortunate to be able to call upon a small team of dedicated inspectors who support members by checking pools for compliance with SPATA Standards and other relevant Regulations, Standards and Guidance. Peter Lang is SPATA’s main Advisor and Inspector. He has been in the industry since September 1974 and has held key roles with SPATA and the BSPF. In January 2000, the Centre for Dispute Resolution in London accredited him as a Mediator, and in a different capacity, he has also acted as a Joint Single Expert Witness and as Expert Witness in a number of court cases. The other inspectors that have been working on behalf of SPATA are Tim Bareham, Jim Gordon, Ian Betts and Steve Conway (who along with Peter have a combined experience of over 200 years in the industry)! The Association was formed over 55 years ago (as the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors), and SPATA was then formed a decade later (to include other types of members). From the start, it was deemed necessary to have Standards. Not only ethical Standards but technical standards as well, so the SPATA Standards were born. It was considered that SPATA Standards would not only set a good quality, minimum standard but also allow members to compete commercially at that Standard (or higher) and therefore be able to justify their standing as a good installer/builder of swimming pools. It has always been implicit that the Standards are not there to be a rigid code, or a complete ‘How to Build a Pool’, nor are they meant to stifle innovation. They are ‘living Standards’ that are there to be upgraded as other legislation, technology and innovation changes. The founders of the Association had also envisaged a programme of member
inspections, ideally on an annual basis and that concept has been in existence, in various forms ever since. Over the years, the inspection programme has been improved and expanded to the point that currently every Installer Member has been proactively inspected in the last four years (if they have built pools in this period). It is hoped to have every current Installer Member inspected at least once every three years (and ideally more often to meet the aspiration of annual inspections). It is also a condition of entry into SPATA that companies applying for membership are inspected as part of the application process. When carrying out the inspection, the Inspector judges what he sees against the Standards and not necessarily his own interpretation of them. For example, he may use a 5-hour turnover for a domestic pool, but a pool turnover conforms to the Standards if it is less than 8 hours. From a technical viewpoint, there are some basic mistakes which need to be avoided, especially as they break the ‘law of the land’ and that all pool companies should take notice of, and there are other minor changes which could be made which would improve the general appearance of the pool or installation. This article looks at items picked up on some SPATA inspections and also from the inspectors visiting the site of other pool projects undertaken by non-SPATA members. They are covered under the headings of ‘Pool’, ‘Plantroom’ and ‘Paperwork’.
POOL
MAINS WATER CONNECTION When any form of topping-up device is connected to the mains water supply, the connection should be via an air gap. This is clearly laid down in the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. The air gap
ensures that the pool water should not be able, under any circumstances, to re-enter the mains water supply. Apart from header tanks (which are a common method to comply with this Regulation), other options include solenoid valves and float switches, where a header tank may be impractical.
SKIMMERS The number of skimmers is determined by the volumetric flow of the system and should equate to, or be better than, 70% of that flow. Often, where the number theoretically required is a fraction, then the lower figure is selected. This may be acceptable in an indoor pool, but in an outdoor pool with greater wind-blown debris, then the higher number may be more appropriate. Alternatively, increasing the size of the skimmer connection pipe does increase its capacity (see manufacturer’s notes).
IN-SITU POOL STEPS The most awkward operation for the very young and very old when using the steps to enter the pool is the top step from the coping down to the first tread. By making this tread double width (or greater) than the other treads below, this allows a more stable platform and should also ensure that the gap between the back of the tread and the wall is 8mm or less (to avoid any entrapment risk). On standing on this double tread and preparing to go backwards (facing away from the pool water – the safest way) the chance of losing balance is virtually nil. If it does happen, the bather is more likely to fall backwards into the water than if they are on the copings where the fall could be in any direction.
FLOOR OUTLETS It is worth remembering that the floor

The problems of a small plant room – too many 90° elbows
outlets should be coupled together in equal branches into one single pipe, which then returns to the plant room. The branches and the single pipe should be of the same diameter that will allow the full flow of the filter pump so that if one outlet is covered the full flow on the other will prevent any suction on the covered outlet. In the commercial pool, this requirement can pose a problem in that the size of the pipes required can be quite large, expensive and cumbersome to install. The requirement is that if a body covers one outlet, there should be no suction to trap it onto that outlet. Therefore by adding an extra one or perhaps two outlets to the first two the full flow of the pump is covered by two or three pipes not a single pipe. Consequently, by careful calculation, the pipe diameters can be reduced. Further protection is achieved by proper spacing of the two outlets, the distance between them in commercial pools should be least 2m, (see BS EN 15288) while for domestic pools, the European standard (BS EN 16582) states that “the distance between the nearest points of the perimeters of the devices shall be as large as possible with respect to the size of the pool and the design of suction outlets, but with a minimum of 1m to ensure the appropriate level of safety from Flue obstructed by the tree

Mixing pipework is not advisable
entrapment”. However, in narrow and hopper profiles in the domestic market, this spacing is sometimes difficult to achieve. This is where a safety grille on top of each outlet increases the safety margin. If the outlets are positioned in shallow water, and correctly spaced, where bathers can walk, it is worth considering using stainless steel grilles to cover them, rather than a safety cover as the safety cover may be a hazard for the toes, etc. It is also worth remembering that SPATA Standards allow for the use of low suctions in certain cases with the proviso that the characteristics of the outlet meet the same requirements as the floor outlets in every respect.
PLANT ROOMS
The layout of the plant room should favour the end user, the person who is going to do the regular maintenance. Pump coarse strainers, backwash handles, and pressure gauges should be readily available and able to be read easily. Control switches should be near the appropriate equipment. Chemical feeders, tanks, etc. should also be easy to fill, to prevent spillage. A good installation is easily spoilt by the use of a felt tip pen to label pipes and
valves, this sometimes even happens in commercial installations. There are many labelling machines available, which are not costly, and some suppliers provide them together with flow direction tape, and all good installers will ensure that the finish in the plant room matches the rest of the pool project.
PIPEWORK It is a requirement that all pipework should be adequately supported and that support should come from clipping and not from the equipment installed. It is amazing how good a well clipped system appears in contrast to one that is all over the place! The use of 45 degree elbows can change the direction and position of the pipes in complicated situations and give a better flow than 90 degree bends.
FILTER PUMP SUCTION MANIFOLD The standard of the pool hydraulics will be improved if the manifold is sized to take into account the size and number of pipes being combined. For example (in general terms) three 1½” pipes should be combined into a 2” manifold. Equally, most pump manufacturers recommend that there should be a straight pipe of at least ten pipe diameters from the manifold into the pump Drop pipe should be vertical

Getting better – more organised pipework
and that it should be the same size as the pump inlet orifice. Because of the size and position of the manifold, it should be well supported, in case it is inadvertently used by others for standing on!
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS All electrical connections and controls must be installed according to BS 7671 (the 3rd amendment is the current version of the Wiring Regulations, although the 18th edition is currently being finalised for next year). Requirements for Electrical Installations: The requirements obviously include Special Locations 702, but some expectations from SPATA include reference to other sections, such as Protection against overload in the ‘Switchgear’ section covering the connection of pump motors. On the other hand there is no specific requirement in the Wiring Regulations regarding spray protection in plant rooms; however SPATA considers that there is a risk due to the pressurised circulation system and the SPATA Standards reflect this need for such protection. While the vast majority of installations seen by inspectors do conform to the above, there can sometimes be issues related to the use of domestic surface mounted boxes and switches. All of these, as well as those containing RCDs, MCBs, time switches, etc. must be enclosed in a hermetically sealed box/container preferably to IP55 rating, as there is a risk of water being sprayed in the plant room. Since January 2017, it has been a requirement to have a non-flammable consumer unit and/or switch gear installed in habitable areas. Therefore metal boxes in indoor plant rooms connected to the property are relevant, whereas a suitable fire risk assessment undertaken by a qualified/experienced person that is skilled electrically, might choose to consider a different type of box to put in a plant room shed for an outdoor pool, where it is sited a long way away from any buildings, etc.
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 49-51_SPN_Oct_17_BSPF_Inspectors.indd 41
Difficult to access the pumps, obstructed by the pipework
From a technical viewpoint, there are some basic mistakes which need to be avoided, especially as they break the ‘law of the land’ and that all pool companies should take notice of, and there are other minor changes which could be made which would improve the general appearance of the pool or installation” FILTER AND POOL CLEANER PUMP CONNECTION A pump, which is hard wired to the main supply via a contactor and control panel, should only be removed from the system by a qualified electrical engineer. If the pump has to be removed to repair or store it, a pool fitter should not perform this task. However, by making the connection using an appropriate plug and socket, a pool fitter can carry out the work.
PAPERWORK
A good pool and plantroom is finished off with an equally good level of administration and paperwork. The initial quote should be clear and easily understood by the client (be wary of using an estimate instead of a quote, as clients will not expect any large changes in price). SPATA is aware of at least one nonSPATA member using estimates in lieu of quotes and then justifying large hikes in the price by stating his price was only an estimate! If you are successful in winning the project, other administration and paperwork is very important to ensure a smooth passage to a completed project and a happy client. The specification should be clear enough and in plain language for the client to see exactly what they are getting for their money. Communication through the project can be aided with written updates confirming verbal exchanges and small pads (that are three part, no carbon required) are an ideal way to flag up any major comments between the parties to avoid any future misunderstanding.
These pads are available free of charge to SPATA members. At the end of the project, the availability of at least one site specific O & M manual is required so that clients have suitable information to pass onto their client for how to use and look after the pool. They may well have chosen to have a maintenance agreement with you and this will need to be suitably worded. The relevant warranties should be provided and the all-important handover certificate (two copies signed) will acknowledge that the client has accepted you have finished (subject to any agreed snagging items, if any).
CONCLUSION
With the effort put into the inspection process by the member and the inspector, this helps to continue raising standards. These type of ‘behind the scenes’ improvements outlined above, should provide not only a good-looking pool but also one that is easy to maintain as well. What is also important to remember is that not only can SPATA call upon these five inspectors, but also the other members of the Technical Committee, including Howard Gosling, Richard Carrington, Bob Judd, Will Dando, Patrick Thorpe and John Scott. All together the Technical Committee are on hand to help members and the SPATA office team deal with enquires from the trade, as well as being a resource of referral for consumers who need pointing in the right direction.

STA POOL PLANT – WATER RELATED SKIN IRRITATIONS
Skin Irritations And Water Quality – Separating Facts From Fiction At STA’s recent National Conference, Robbie Phillips discussed the topical issue of water-related skin irritations to dispel some of the myths surrounding skin complaints encountered by swimming teachers and bathers. Here Robbie, STA’s lead pool plant tutor, explains the issue
S
ocial media is a popular forum for swimming teachers to debate and positively share all manner of subjects. Within these forums, however, we’ve also seen an increasing amount of swimming teachers talk about skin irritations relating to water quality, and asking fellow colleagues what the causes and best remedies are. The responses are always very encouraging, but sometimes not always accurate, hence the reason for this article – to separate facts from fiction.
BASIC CAUSES OF SKIN IRRITATIONS IN POOL WATER FACT – skin conditions which can be initiated and irritated by chlorinated / brominated water usually stem from poor pool maintenance. They can be caused by:
CHEMICAL POLLUTION IN THE POOL • Wrong pH – too high it affects skin pore excretions and if it’s too low can be aggressive to the skin • Low free chlorine levels – this allows infectious pathogens (bugs) to thrive • High free chlorine levels – they need to be very high, however, it may affect those with sensitive skin • High combined chlorine (used chlorine) levels – if high, this can cause irritation of the respiratory tract, possible skin irritation etc. Other chemicals commonly used in pools which can cause irritation are aluminium (flocculants), sulphates (pH control and flocculent chemicals), and bromine based chemicals (sometimes used in large leisure pools and spas which if uncontrolled can cause ‘Bromine Itch!’). Also, if uncontrolled total dissolved solids – chemical by-products e.g. cosmetics, oils, body excretions etc. Our recommendations: • Ideally use an automatically controlled
sites are inadequate cleaning procedures (pool and changing rooms), the state of the balance tank, a poor filtration system, the condition of the pool plant room and an incorrect water overflow system. Contaminated bathers and their towels i.e. lack of hygiene / showering controls are also a major contributing factor.
SOLUTIONS
chemical dosing system with accepted testing regimes • Use free chlorine, which is the best proven disinfectant approved by STA and PWTAG • If using a manual system, then apply stringent testing and monitoring controls.
BIOLOGICAL POLLUTION Common examples of infection resulting from biological pollution are Pseudomonas, conjunctivitis, Otitis externa – ‘swimmers ear’, foot infections and viral infections. However, all of these are not easily transmitted in well maintained, disinfected and treated pools. They most often occur as a result of poorly maintained facilities. If bacteriological analysis of pool water is not performed on a regular basis, a pool operator will probably be unaware of the contamination problem until bathers start complaining of infection – pool rash or dermatitis. Those most likely to experience problems are bathers who spend lengthy amounts of time soaking in a spa, staff members (potentially by default swimming teachers) who wear wet bathing suits throughout their work shift, or patrons who swim regularly for extended periods of time.
VISIBLE INDICATORS Other clear visible indictors of contaminated

• Good housekeeping across all areas of the pool and changing rooms • Regular water testing • Regular microbiological testing by an approved laboratory • Education – make staff aware of basic pool plant principles, water testing, pH levels etc. • Enforce strict hygiene controls to bathers and staff • For teachers – ensure all swimming aids are thoroughly cleaned using dilute chlorinated water and not left in moist bags. The health and safety of the pool is the responsibility of the pool operator and you would expect suitably trained pool plant operator(s) to be managing the pool. But, for swim schools who hire these pools, it is imperative they don’t just trust that the pool is being fully maintained. Instead we advise swim school owners / teachers to learn basic pool plant principles and ask questions about: • Disinfectant and pH levels • Removal of slime or biofilm layers • Testing procedures etc. Finally, coming back to the most contentious question posted on social media about what solutions there are to ease skin irritations – our professional advice is do not use any creams before teaching as these can contribute to chemical pollution. Creams can also feed microorganisms and in most cases can build up scum. CANINE HYDROTHERAPY
Keeping Man’s Best Friend Safe and Fit Pools and aquatic treadmills are increasingly used in the rehabilitation of animals, and its reassuring to know that as with those used by humans, there are strict standards that are followed in their operation – something that the experts from Lovibond Tintometer found out on a recent visit
H
ydrotherapy for humans has long been established as an essential part of the healing process. More recently, it is also becoming increasingly used in the recovery process of a variety of animals including horses, cats and of course man’s best friend, our dogs. Its popularity has grown so much that SPATEX 2017 even included a seminar covering the subject and the annual event has plans to do so again in the future. As with humans, hydrotherapy provides an excellent form of exercise – working all of the muscles without stress or shock to the joints, tendons and bones which can weaken the limb further, particularly after injury or surgery. One minute on an aquatic treadmill equates to a one mile walk on land. Canine hydrotherapy is typically used as an alternative to weight-bearing exercise and medication. It can speed recovery or slow the progression of degenerative conditions. It is also used as a fitness regime prior to an operation or on puppies too young for surgery. Obese dogs can also build fitness and lose weight as a result of exercise in a hydrotherapy pool without putting excessive weight on their joints. Unsurprisingly, our best friends’ hydrotherapy centres are strictly regulated. Institutions such as the Canine Hydrotherapy Association (CHA) which currently has in excess of 120 practices registered across the UK along with the National Association of Registered Canine Hydrotherapists (NARCH) set out stringent guidelines on how their members should run their centres with Accredited Qualification Programs,

continuous assessment and inspections. Obviously, many of the regulations involve the use of credited aquatic treadmills and qualifications on the handling of animals. However, pool water management and accurate water analysis are also very much a key part of the process. Visiting the Top Dog Hydrotherapy centre near Amesbury, we learnt in detail how much emphasis was put on making sure the hydrotherapy pool water and aquatic treadmill water were clean and safe. The centre is a CHA member and provides sessions for up to ten dogs a day. A board is meticulously kept with the dog’s name, age, breed, sex, time of therapy and symptoms. The temperature of the water is also always recorded and normally kept between 30 – 31°C. Although the dogs are always showered before, and after, each session, the water is always tested a minimum of twice daily, but often it can be more. If the owner suspects any form of contamination, they should not swim. The regular tests are for: • Chlorine (Free and Total) / Bromine Free • Chloramines • Alkalinity • Calcium Hardness • pH • Temperature. In addition, monthly microbiological testing should be carried out. As with public pools, a log book is accurately filled out including the number of dogs and people who have used the facilities, dates and times of backwash and any corrective action taken. The Top Dog log sheet also provides details on the recommended levels of each parameter. Log sheets are stored for inspection by customers and any potential audits. All CHA and NARCH members are required to keep this detail of record to qualify for membership. Once a year as a minimum, an independent and qualified pool water engineer from the CHA also visits to check
the water quality and bacteria tests of their members. Both organisations offer comprehensive guidelines and example log sheets on their websites. There are also extensive training courses on accurate water testing across the country with applicable certification. Naturally dogs are not able to tell us if they feel the water is clean, safe and beneficial to their well-being and neither can humans, as water can appear clean but may contain toxins and irritant chemicals. As with public baths, one of the main reasons for such accurate water testing is to ensure that the level of chemicals used for sanitisation is regulated to minimise any opportunity to have an adverse effect on the dogs, their owners and the hydrotherapists themselves. It’s comforting to know that man’s best friends are in such good, regulated hands.

CASE STUDY THE TILED SPA WITH STAR QUALITY! Thanks to the hard work of Lifestyle Pools & Leisure, a bespoke Certikin tiled spa has taken centre stage in this beautiful garden in Creaton, Northamptonshire. Given the brief to install a spa to enhance and do justice to the garden, the Northamptonshire-based pool dealers chose a bespoke Certikin domestic tiled skimmer spa (3m x 2m). “It wasn’t the easiest of installations,” said Lifestyle’s Managing Director David Clark. “There were problems siting the spa, which was some 60m from the nearest access. A vine covered steel arch had to be removed to allow a small telehandler to take the spa as close as possible. A 1.5m high wall meant we could only drop the spa within 3m of the excavated site. We had 12mm threads welded to 150mm castors

to replace six of the adjustable feet which made it possible to move the spa over two trestles above the final position. A large gantry, complete with block and tackle, was erected over the spa to allow removal of the trestles and the lowering of the spa onto the prepared base.” With a family of children, safety was naturally an issue. A Certikin Coverstar was chosen for its outstanding safety qualities and for the aesthetic appearance of its flat/covered leading edge. David added: “After plumbing and service pipework, the backfilling of the spa was completed to allow for the construction of the Coverstar housing and fitting of the track. Following the cover fit, the stonework was completed to the spa surrounds and the

CLEARWATER SPAS – QUALITY THAT’S REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT Supplied by Aqua Design & Leisure (ADL), the range of models from Clearwater Spas includes some of the most unique, advanced spa designs in the world. With help from aerospace engineers they have totally reengineered the hot tub for the modern age, using the most modern materials, theories and manufacturing processes. All with the aim of making the most efficient, ergonomic and eco-friendly spas possible. Sitting at the top-end of their offering are their Resort and Beachcraft Series. Both come loaded with standard features, offer an excellent hydrotherapy experience and promise hassle-free maintenance, but the main thing that makes a Clearwater so unique is its structure, which can be broken down
into four main components. Clearwater Spas’ shells have beauty, strength and eco-friendly qualities. Formed of three layers plus expanded steel support in heavy traffic areas they are, according to ADL, the strongest shell system in the industry. Clearwater Spas PVC pillar supports stand the test of time. They will never rot, mold, rust or breakdown which can happen with other manufacturers that use wooden or steel frames. Clearwater Spas weather-resistant, RTB (Reflective Thermal Barrier) insulated Durafloor™ system insulates and protects from the outdoor elements. It is siliconesealed and bonded to the hot tub cabinet for a solid foundation. It lifts components off of the cold ground, protects from moisture,

SAFETY FLOORING
Safety Flooring That’s Far From Boring Visualisation of pool with Designwork’s Belgravia Lasa recified structured porcelain floor tiles 1200 x 600mm with barefoot wet (TRRL55 wet) rating of 46
For the spaces that surround swimming pools and spas, there’s literally no room for any slip-ups when it comes to safety, especially if you are a commercial operator. With flooring materials assessed for how slippery they are when wet and under foot, there’s extra pressure to ensure floors provide a safe level of grip regardless of the conditions. Thankfully, there’s a wide choice of materials available to suit any application and budget. In this issue, we examine the options that are enhancing safety in wet leisure environments By Andrea Hartshorne
S
afety, quite rightly, is the number one priority in wet leisure environments. But good looks are also a high priority too, after all a lot of money will have been invested into a project so owners don’t want to compromise on aesthetics if at all possible. Thankfully, when it comes to safety flooring for wet leisure areas, minimising the dangers of slippery floors doesn’t mean minimising the style options because there’s actually a huge selection of flooring materials and colours on offer. From specially treated slip resistant tiles to the more contemporary granular rubber flooring, there’s a solution for every need and we take a closer look at just some of the under-foot safety products that are on the market.
RUBAROC – A LEADING FORCE IN SAFETY SURFACES Rubaroc are one of the country’s leading experts in installing slip-resistant, porous, impact absorbent surfaces around swimming pools and have been trading successfully in the UK for over 20 years.
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 59-61_SPN_Oct_17_Safety_Flooring.indd 59
Their Rubaroc Wet Pour is a swimming pool surround surface suited to all types of residential, commercial and Local Authority swimming pools. Not only does it work effectively – it looks great as well with a choice of colours to suit any pool. Rubaroc Wet Pour is made from hard wearing rubber granular chips which are mixed with a binding agent. This creates a seamless, porous and flexible finish, which is both impact absorbent and slip-resistant whether the floor is wet or dry. This combination of features makes it ideally suited to pool surfacing on indoor and outdoor pools. Rubaroc use a range of different binders for different requirements including two part binders for use in high traffic areas and remarkably, the product stretches to accommodate most substrate cracks caused by ground movement. Rubaroc rubber safety surfacing also expands and contracts with temperature changes.
The product is mixed on site and troweled by craftsmen to a uniform thickness over a new or existing surface to create a beautiful, seamless finish. It can be applied to angular surfaces, like coping around a pool or stair faces and special rubber safety surfacing materials are skillfully used for custom logos and designs . The company don’t compromise on quality, always use the best materials and are wellknown in the industry for their reliability and outstanding after sales service.

SAFETY FLOORING ECOTILE LIFESTYLE SOLVES A SLIPPERY PROBLEM Whether you’re responsible for a huge leisure park or a hot tub at home the safety of the flooring is a prime concern. Many traditional surfaces used around swimming pools and in changing rooms can be very slippery in wet conditions and accidents often occur. This is the problem that Ecotile Lifestyle solves. Their wet area and swimming pool surround flooring is manufactured from UV stabilised polypropylene. It is moulded into 380mm x 380mm (7 per m2) tiles that can be interlocked together to create a durable floor. All of their tiles are quick and easy to install and are available in a range of eyepleasing colours should you wish to create zones, walkways or patterns. The tiles are designed with an open grid surface that allows water to drain through so pools of runoff water do not collect and pose a risk of slipping. An additional safety feature is the material itself – polypropylene provides a comfortable yet grippy anti-slip surface with an R10 rating. As all of their swimming pool flooring is UV stabilised, it is non staining and will not fade in colour over time. Their attractive yet functional interlocking tiles will ensure everyone can enjoy themselves without risk of slipping or falling on hard concrete or ceramic tiles. The practical interlocking tile system means installation is simple and long-term maintenance is minimal. Polypropylene is a tough material but if you do need to replace a tile it only takes a couple of minutes. You can also alter the layout easily. So relax and enjoy the swimming pool safe in the knowledge that Ecotile Lifestyle is ventilating the substrate, absorbing noise and keeping users safe and comfortable.
STYLE, SUBSTANCE AND SAFETY FROM DESIGNWORKS Pool surroundings have to work hard. Tiles used for flooring around wet areas have to complement the colours and textures within the pool itself, look good in their own
The stylish Ecotile Lifestyle solution guarantees safe relaxation
right, withstand wear and tear, and most importantly, they need to have slip resistant qualities. Not that long ago there was very little choice and there certainly wasn’t much style on offer. Now pools and spas don’t all have to look the same. Safe can be stylish too. Advances in tile technology are driving the pace and so it is possible to have slip resistant porcelain tiles and planks that look convincingly like wood, marble, limestone or cement, and more besides. Mosaics, once only for inside pools and definitely a no-no pool-side are now available with slip resistance finishes, opening up the range of colours on offer, to match, complement or contrast with other shades and textures. Edging pieces, grips and drainage grilles can all be slip-resistant too. All these and more are on offer from the Designworks Tiles pool and spa ranges: their no-frills Dorset Woolliscroft range meets the need for safety floor tiles and fittings in a range of colours and finishes for schools and leisure centres. At the luxury end they offer seamless style with trend-led inside/outside large formats, beautiful and robust 20mm thick porcelains, chic faux marble tiles and timber-style planks. And if they don’t stock
it, they can make it. Their bespoke service includes in-house engineering grilles and slot systems to match surround tiles in the same material. They also take safety seriously. At Designworks Tiles their technical advisors test all their products in-house by using the pendulum method – it’s the Health and Safety Executive’s preferred method of testing, because it is portable and can be used to test in the conditions that slip accidents happen.
A VERSATILE RUBBER SOLUTION FROM SWIMTECH SwimTech can provide versatile, anti-slip, impact resistant rubber flooring, with a wide range of primary colours enabling it to blend into any environment. Special requirements regarding a specific colour or mixed combinations are also possible, as are specialised finishes incorporating personalised logos, bespoke designs, lettering and figures. The company have built a long-standing reputation for quality rubber flooring and the product they use is made of rubber granules bonded with a urethane resin to a depth of

about 6mm. The flooring is impact resistant and whether indoors or outdoors, provides an anti-slip surface, thus eliminating accidents caused by wet or slippery tiled or slab surfaces. The product adheres to most surfaces including concrete, wood, fibreglass, glazed tiles and metal and can be ready in 24 hours. It will cover existing cracks or surface blemishes and being rubber, it acts as its own expansion join regardless of temperature, for outdoor and indoor applications. What’s more the rubber product only requires minimal regular cleaning and maintenance – water, combined with a stiff nylon brush/broom, wet and dry vacuum cleaner or power hose (up to a pressure of 1,500 psi) are most suitable. Heavily used commercial or semi commercial pools can be easily cleaned with soap and water or normal solvents. SwimTech aim to deliver on all fronts to ensure customer satisfaction and provide a personal and professional service.

This sandswept sandstone has warm buff tones similar to York sandstone and its slip resistant surface makes it perfect for landscaping and pool surrounds. Through Golden Coast, a range of natural textured stone for regular sized pools is available, alongside made-to-measure offerings for bespoke pools. It is even possible to have steps leading into the water crafted in the same material. Customers can choose from a wide-ranging range of natural looks and hues, including: smooth simulated white stone, textured sandstone, natural riven sandstone, fossil pearl limestone, graphite grey limestone or grey flamed granite.

Managing Slip Risk In Wet Areas – Ensuring You Don’t Slip Up! LEISURE EXPERT PANEL BEST PRACTICE GUIDE TO MANAGING SLIP RISK
IN WET AREAS
This guide has been developed to help leisure premises to prevent slips in wet areas. The information in this guide has been derived from research undertaken by members of the LEP Slips Working Group formed of representatives from Leisure Business, Insurance Liability, Environmental Health, Claims Defensibility and Slip Management Specialists.
Introduction
Slips are the largest cause of accidents in both public areas and workplaces and this issue is particularly relevant to the leisure industry with many foreseeably wet environments due to management.
According to Christian Harris, Commercial Director at Bonasystems, a failure to understand and quantify slip risk has resulted in a rise in accidents but as we highlight, there’s plenty of resources available to ensure safer wet leisure environments for all
A
ssessing and dealing with slip risk in wet areas is frequently at the top of managers’ minds when it comes to safety in the leisure industry. It’s no surprise that slips remain the largest cause of accidents what with various wet environments to manage, from changing rooms to poolsides to entrances. Earlier this year the Leisure Expert Panel (LEP) launched a ‘Best Practice Guide to Managing Slip Risk in Wet Areas’. The Guide was developed specifically to help the leisure industry prevent slips in wet areas. Derived from research undertaken by members of the LEP Slips Working Group, including Bonasystems, the Guide explains how to understand your slip risk in wet environments. Focusing on each of the factors that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identify as contributors to slip potential, the Guide provides practical advice on mitigating this risk. A copy of the Guide can be downloaded as a PDF free of charge from www.leisureexpertpanel.co.uk “The best starting point for managing risk in wet areas begins with a Pendulum Test,” advised Christian Harris, Commercial Director at Bonasystems. He added: “It’s a relatively straightforward test to carry out, plus it measures the slip potential of floors in both dry and wet conditions by assessing the friction offered by a floor surface when a foot comes into contact with it. “Importantly passing the Pendulum Test is the ideal way to prove to authorities, insurance providers and lawyers that you have provided a safe floor environment, and can be used for claims defensibility should you be taken to court.”
Recommended by the HSE, the Pendulum Test is the only test used in enforcement and prosecution. So how does it work? A Pendulum Test is operated by a swinging arm that sweeps over a floor area. At the end of the arm is a rubber slider, which strikes and passes along the floor over a predetermined distance. If the arm is released without touching the floor, it swings from horizontal to horizontal (no friction). Once it strikes the floor, friction decelerates the arm and therefore it swings less far. The Pendulum Test Value (PTV) is then derived. To find out more about Pendulum Testing and PTVs, visit the UK Slip Resistance Group website at www.ukslipresistance.org.uk The LEP Best Practice Guide also points out that if you have a correctly specified slip-resistant floor, you have a good chance of being able to maintain its slip resistance. If you have a floor with poor inherent slip resistance, it is much more difficult to keep it consistently and sustainably slip resistant. Flooring can be easily controlled at the design and specification stage. A slip resistant floor does not necessarily cost any more than a floor without suitable slip
Focusing on each of the factors that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identify as contributors to slip potential, the Guide provides practical advice on mitigating this risk” 62 October 2017 SPN 62_SPN_Oct_17_Safety_Flooring.indd 62
Slip accidents consistently account for around 1 in 3 non-fatal major injuries and for over 1 in 5 over 3-day injuries in UK workplaces. Around 35,000 workplace injuries occur per year following a slip accident alone (that’s around 1 accident at work every 15 minutes). 30%+ of accidents that happen to members of the public are slips. Further, slips cause around 33% of public liability claims both by volume and value. Almost all these accidents occur when floor surfaces are wet and/or contaminated.
In the leisure industry, it is foreseeable that some environments will be wet all or most of the time either through routine use, spillages or cleaning. Such areas include: • Swimming pool areas • Spa areas including steam and sauna rooms • Showers • Washrooms • Changing rooms (even if there is no pool, changing rooms should be considered ’wet’ areas due to the presence of showers and washrooms) • Guest bathrooms in hotels Equally, floors in these environments become contaminated from the depositing of body fats, shampoos, oils, talc, etc.; Ineffective cleaning can also lead to build-up of contamination (either by not removing contaminants or by leaving chemical residue behind). The combination of water and contamination in these foreseeably wet environments presents a significant safety challenge for the sector. This guide will explain how to understand your slip risk in the above foreseeably wet environments focussing on each of the factors that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identify as contributors to slip potential. The guide will offer advice on practical methods to mitigate this risk.

resistance. On existing floors with poor inherent slip resistance, the options are generally limited to replacement or treatment. It’s also important to note that leisure premises rarely have level floor surfaces. Typically, on a poolside surround or in showers, for example, there is a 2° slope to allow water to fall to a drain. A higher PTV is required on sloping surfaces to achieve the same level of friction and safety. The Guide stipulates that floors should be periodically inspected to make sure that PTV levels are maintained. It is not enough to say a floor is slip resistant, and a floor will need to be maintained to offer long term slip resistance. The frequency for this monitoring will vary according to individual sites. Additionally, floors will wear over time – so be vigilant. Environment, footwear and behaviour can contribute to the likelihood of a slip occurring. Running, pushing or pulling for instance increase the requirement for traction. Wet environments present their own unique challenges too – a poolside floor will always be wet whereas a changing room floor is always likely to get wet. Christian Harris also recommended that: “Managing contamination through effective cleaning is one of the best control measures available to reduce slip risk in wet environments. We’ve recently undertaken a study which showed that of approximately 400 floors Pendulum Tested in foreseeably wet environments in the leisure industry, only 20% achieved low slip potential as found in wet conditions. “But, when cleaned effectively, 75% achieved low slip potential in wet conditions. Effective cleaning therefore achieved a 100x reduction in slip risk on average – from an average wet PTV 28.9 (1 in 10,000 risk) to an average wet PTV 37.7 (less than 1 in 1,000,000 risk). When executed correctly cleanliness has a significant reduction in slip risk.” Bonasystems 01442 927100 www.bonasystems.com

Products That Go Over The Top To Extend The Pool Season Providing all year round swimming, regardless of the unpredictable UK weather, a swimming pool enclosure reduces both maintenance and running costs for both commercial and domestic pool owners plus it builds in safety too. There’s no doubt that having an enclosure is an investment, but having one means owners can maximise the full potential of their swimming pool. chill is in the air and leaves are falling and this can mean only one thing for many owners of outdoor swimming pools. Regrettably, it’s time to prepare to close down what has been a focal point for fun during the summer – the swimming pool. Of course, there is a way of extending the fun times and many pool companies will no doubt be pointing out the many advantages of adding a pool enclosure, and these great add-ons come in a whole spectrum of shapes, sizes and price points. They are extremely versatile and can be fully fixed to the floor or wall and be telescopic, allowing a completely open air pool when weather permits or be neatly closed up protecting swimmers from the elements when necessary. Whatever the choice, the fact is that an enclosure is an effective way of lengthening the pool season and at the same time cuts back on maintenance time as the enclosure is a barrier to debris. As always, safety is of course of vital importance

too and an enclosure when closed prevents the pool being accessed by children and pets without adult supervision. Another bonus is that heating and chemical costs are also reduced due to this efficient cover up. So with a multitude of benefits on offer, we take a closer look at some of the products that are literally going over the top to maxmise the use whilst minimising the maintenance of outdoor swimming pools.

ARCH ENCLOSURES – SWIM IN COMFORT ANY TIME OF YEAR The products available from Arch Enclosures are designed for homes, schools, clubs and holiday villages and customers can choose from timber or aluminium, fixed, fully telescopic, low level or super flat options. Although Arch full height enclosures start from 5m wide they are known for their larger enclosures – up to 23m wide and any length in aluminium and 40m+ in timber.
Installed at a holiday park, this commercial enclosure from Arch demonstrates the versatile advantages of covering a public pool
To accommodate these larger widths they have five different structural arch designs. It is not a case of “one size fits all”. They have been structurally designed taking into account wind and snow loadings and weather conditions that the UK is likely to experience. The size of the profile used is governed by the width required and the calculations for each individual enclosure are provided for building regulation approvals. Rails provide stability and smooth operation, however this is not enough to prevent an enclosure being blown off of them in a high wind. For telescopic enclosures, Arch Enclosures can link several mobile vaults together thus reducing the number of vaults and the
number of ground rails. This is important as each mobile vault telescopes into the next. Therefore with many moving vaults the height and width of the enclosure is reduced. The more vaults the lower the head height. Arch also offer a wide range of gluelaminate timber frame pool enclosures. Successfully deployed for many years in the construction industry as well as in highly aggressive environments – such a salt storage warehouses, bridges and virtually all public swimming pools – this material combines aesthetic appeal, sturdiness and durability. Widths of up to 40m are available as are special bespoke designs. One of Arch’s larger installations covering 1,200m² is at Port de Plaisance, Yelloh! Village campsite at
CASE STUDY THE NEW AQBOX BOXES CLEVER! Difficult access prompted Pembrokeshirebased Pegasus Pools to consider installing its first AQBox enclosure for this pool owner in Milford Haven. Impressed by the enclosure’s ease and speed of installation, Pegasus is now recommending the product to other customers looking for an affordable and simple solution to covering their pool. “Looking to extend the swimming season, the owner was keen to cover his pool but the property’s narrow access precluded the installation of a conventional enclosure,” said Pegasus Managing Director Steve Bamford. “I then thought about the AQBox which, as its name suggests, arrives in a box. We dismantled it prior to delivery and carried it in pieces round to the back garden.” Manufactured by leading enclosure specialists, Aquacomet and supplied by Certikin International, the attractive AQBox enclosure comes in a low and standard height offering three different lengths for

each and two different glazes. The eye-catching enclosure offers a high specification, which includes a patented child safe locking system, 6mm double wall polycarbonate or 3mm SAN solid, UV protected on both sides. The enclosure parts are made of rounded anodized aluminium alloy with clear or thermo glazing. The low level enclosure comes with removable front and back walls, both delivered in one piece, with side mounted sliding doors whilst the standard enclosures feature a front wall, including a French door in the middle and a removable end wall. Steve added: “The owner was delighted with it and he is intending to use it all year round. The property is surrounded by trees so the enclosure is ideal for keeping leaf debris out.”

…there is a way of extending the fun times and many pool companies will no doubt be pointing out the many advantages of adding a pool enclosure, and these great add-ons come in a whole spectrum of shapes, sizes and price points” Telescopic with curved ends , the Olympic enclosure from Alukov is attractive and functional
Benodet Harbour in France. On ‘Rotunda Models’ the end fans open and is a decorative feature in itself. It can be a solution where a rectangular structure would not suit.
ALUKOV’S WIDE RANGE OFFERS A SOLUTION FOR ALL Alukov have a wide range of models from low, high, lean-to and free standing, all are bespoke and offer high manufacturing quality, innovations and modern design. As with other enclosure solutions, a model from the Alukov range will save the pool owner time and money particularly in the long run, as the hours spent maintaining the pool and the area directly surrounding it will be significantly reduced. The Alukov savings continues with heating costs too. The polycarbonate used for glazing provides for the free and environmentally-friendly capturing of heat resulting from solar radiation plus retention of heat from the pool leading to reduction in cost of water heating and prevention of thermal loss. In addition to the advantages mentioned, an Alukov enclosure’s polycarbonate panels protect users from damaging and harmful UV radiation. The panels are extremely sturdy and come with a 15 year warranty. One of the largest models in the company’s line-up is the exclusive Olympic™ which is one of eight high enclosure models in the company’s range. With its eye catching design and the option to have a dome at either end of the structure, the Olympic™ gives the user multiple usage options. Spacious enough to walk around, each dome can open up to 90° with the main structure having the facility to slide open too. Like all enclosures within the range, the Olympic™ comes with the option of an electric remote control motor to open and close the enclosure. In addition, and as with other models in the Alukov enclosure range,

all sections can be retracted left or right, the smallest within the largest and vice-a-versa. With the frame construction available in six finishes and with the polycarbonate available in three colours, the Olympic™ has the flexibility to suit a wide variety of applications and environments.
CERTIKIN’S ENCLOSURE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS Certikin offer an extensive range of pool and spa enclosures, thanks to its partnership with leading enclosure designer and manufacturer, Aquacomet. They offer a variety of options in full height and low level models. The range includes the ORION, a stunning full height model from Aquacomet that offers telescopic opening and closing without railings through the use of an extremely strong yet visually light-appearing structure. The structure of the ORION models provide the opportunity to open and close the enclosure remotely. The low-voltage frictiondrive motor unit is mounted on the largest part of the enclosure. The battery is hidden inside the arch, does not require care and is
charged by a solar power panel mounted on top of the enclosure. The Endless Summer range of high quality, custom-made enclosures includes fixed models (with opening side windows) and various telescopic options. Every possible permutation is catered for including low level, high level, lean to, fixed and sliding options. The metal of the Endless Summer structure can be ordered in white (RAL 9010) or moss green (RAL 6005), which are the standard design colours. Wood pattern or other RAL coded surface treatments are available as other options. The roof surface of the Endless Summer enclosure is made of double wall polycarbonate while the side doors and wall endings are made of transparent polycarbonate sheet. The enclosures are suitable for many applications (both commercial and domestic) and not just swimming pools and spas – indeed they can offer an outside ‘living’ room for any use. The easy to handle sliding doors can be locked so that the enclosure is not accessible to children. Certikin offers a free site survey. Installation is optional to give full peace of mind, or supply only and guidance provided should it be preferred.

ENCLOSURES TELESCOPIC OPTIONS Telescopic Pool Enclosures have been marketing retractable enclosures in the UK since 1991 when they were first imported from Europe. Before then the company had been constructing large span buildings such as conservatories, orangeries, glass extensions and swimming pool enclosures in timber, aluminium and UPVC so it has gained a great deal of experience in construction in this market as well as with planning and building regulations. Their product range is extensive and features exclusive products from brands ROLAL, AZENCO and more. The enclosures the company supplies can be fixed or retractable, are made to measure and can be single or double glazed. Commercially, whether fixed or retractable, the company offer far more insulated buildings than many competitors. This is an advantage, particularly with schools, as some local authorities decline plastic swimming pool enclosures due to their cost to maintain a suitable environment all year round, and plastic products do not offer as much insulation and heating costs can often be excessive during colder periods if pools are used all year round. Other products available from Telescopic Pool Enclosures include enclosures for for spas and hot tubs, retractable garden rooms, retractable buildings for restaurants, hotels and other concerns who seek a quick economical extension to cover a patio area, outside eating area or reception area. With a wealth of experience within the sector, the Wiltshire based company have also been able not only to replace older pool buildings but also refurbish some as a more economical option.
THE SUMMIT OF SUCCESS Summit Leisure are one of the UK’s leading suppliers and installers of telescopic and static swimming pool enclosures with many hundreds of buildings under their belt throughout the UK, supplying and installing buildings in both the domestic

and commercial sectors. The secret of their success, according to Managing Director Graham Kelsey, is a combination of demonstrably one of the best products on the market plus a unique and incredibly diligent approach to customer service. The Summit Leisure Algarve Aqua telescopic building has an exclusive trackless design, which means that Summit Leisure can install their enclosures without the need for any unsightly and potentially hazardous tracks or rails being fixed to the pool surround. This is a hugely important feature as pool owners often invest significant sums of money in their pool decks and don’t want them marred by anything which detracts aesthetically. Instead, the superior integral strength of the enclosure and the Algarve’s unique patented guiding system allows the enclosure to run straight and true every time. This feature also allows the enclosure to be opened up at any point. Not only that, but the quality of the design, materials and
production means that they can manufacture buildings up to an incredible 21m wide. The use of toughened safety glass, as opposed to polycarbonate, is another significant feature which buyers of Summit Leisure’s enclosures find especially beneficial. A pool building manufactured in toughened safety glass is much more resilient to bad weather, does not mist, distort, or scratch, and is safer to use on a moving structure. Finally, and for the ultimate in luxury, any of Summit’s telescopic enclosures can be motorised to give completely automatic operation when both opening and closing the enclosure, at the touch of a button by wireless remote control.

ENJOY YOUR SWIMMING POOL ALL YEAR ROUND WITH A RETRACTABLE ENCLOSURE Owning an outdoor swimming pool is one of the most rewarding investments you can make. Swimming on a warm summery day when the weather is mild and dry is very refreshing and energising. What a way to start or finish your day... But as soon as autumn arrives and days get cooler and wetter, the thought of dipping into your pool is suddenly less appealing. ALUKOV offers a solution where you can benefit of having an outdoor pool and enjoy hot summer days, and have the very same pool enclosed and protected from bad, cold weather. The answer is retractable swimming pool enclosure. The gliding system allows you to slide the whole structure off the swimming pool with ease and change an outdoor pool into indoor. This way you have the best of both worlds. There are many additional benefits of having enclosed swimming pool. The structure stops debris, grass, leaves, pine
needles, insects etc. falling into the pool therefore less maintenance, less chemicals, no waste of heat energy stored in the water from the sun or heater, security, prevention of accidental falls and most importantly extended swimming season. Having ALUKOV enclosure means you may swim when you want. ALUKOV has very wide choice of styles, shapes and heights to choose from. The most popular is full height enclosure where you can stand up in. If you prefer an enclosure which will not obstruct the views we can offer you a low version (you can still swim underneath). Enjoy a swim all year round by adding a telescopic swimming pool enclosure to your outdoor swimming pool. Whether you’ve yet to have your pool built or you’ve owned one for long time, swimming pool enclosure can easily be added.
Do you have a patio area but never use due the unpredictable British weather? Do not be limited by wind and rain, enjoy the maximum benefits of sliding patio enclosure CORSO™. This unique enclosure is fully retractable. The lean-to aluminium structure works on two rails – one is mounted on the house and one on the ground. Thanks to those rails you can slide each section (roof included) in both directions. Only this way you can enjoy your patio in sunny days as well as when it rains. There are endless uses of the patio enclosure – you can create a play room, covered outdoor dining area or simply storage space. Every structure is bespoke.

aquanale always draws the crowds and organisers expect the 2017 show to be no different
It’s Show Season! With the domestic and international show season just weeks away, we take a brief look at Piscina & Wellness Barcelona, the NEC’s Holiday Park & Resort Innovation 2017 and Cologne’s aquanale exhibitions By Jon Wadeson MORE OF EVERYTHING AT PISCINA & WELLNESS BARCELONA 2017 Piscina & Wellness Barcelona continues to grow thanks to its commitment to innovation and international business, while reflecting the upturn in a sector which has consolidated the recovery that began in 2015. At its next edition on 17-20 October at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition centre, the show expects to host a total of 315 direct exhibitors from 25 countries in a net exhibition space of over 14,000m2, representing a 10% increase in the number of stands and a 15% increase in space compared to the previous show two years ago. Organised by Fira de Barcelona in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Pool Sector Professionals (ASOFAP), Piscina & Wellness Barcelona will present an overview of pool products for residential and public use, as well as installations, equipment and accessories for the wellness and spa sector, an area that is booming. More than ever before, the show is putting an emphasis on innovation and will present the latest

products, technologies and eco-efficient solutions that improve the sustainability, control, automation, maintenance and user experience of swimming pools and other wellness products. Eloi Planes, the President of the show’s organising committee and CEO of Fluidra,
defines this edition as ‘key’ to consolidating the upward growth trend and said: “We are committed to promoting innovation and access to emerging markets, but also to the business side. We’re working to make the show a great network for contacts and a driving force for opportunities and Piscina & Wellness Barcelona has always been a great venue for networking

knowledge so that firms and visitors alike can get the most out of their participation in Piscina & Wellness Barcelona.” Market leading brands such as Fluidra, Espa, Diasa Industrial, Hayward, Kripsol, Renolit, Zodiac, SCP, Dantherm and Inbeca have already confirmed their participation in the show, which will occupy two entire halls of the Gran Via venue. At the same time, the show is growing internationally, one of its major hallmarks, with 61% of exhibitors coming from abroad. After Spain, the country with the most businesses exhibiting at the show is China, followed by France, the USA, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The four-day event is taking advantage of its strong international character to attract industry professionals from all over the world. Another big attraction is the growth in demand for products and services for public swimming pools and recreational water parks, as well as for the wellness and spa sector that is helping to drive the tourist industry in many countries. Piscina & Wellness Barcelona also represents an important barometer for identifying opportunities and trends, as well as for sharing experiences and information
Following an excellent response in 2015, the Wellness Spa Experience will be repeated this year in Barcelona
and gaining an appreciation of the innovation driving the sector. That is why this year the demonstration areas are being expanded to showcase the actual use of the products and services being exhibited by participating firms. As explained by the show’s Director, Ángel Celorrio: “We are strengthening the areas that provide added value, extending product promotion beyond the stands and paying particular attention to facilitating professional networking.”
THE INNOVATION ZONE Located in Hall 2 and covering over 550m2 – The Innovation Zone will be the space where exhibitors will showcase a selection of their latest products, including those that have won prizes in the Best Product category of the event’s own Awards. Also on show will be the latest technological applications for residential, public and wellness pools, particularly those related to the Internet of Things and to the automation of maintenance and control of aquatic facilities. The show’s President and CEO of Fluidra, Eloi Planes, insists that the sector is committed to “creating global solutions that incorporate products with a high added value which focus strongly on improving the user experience of pools; this means making them convenient,
easier to maintain and more closely connected to wellbeing, at all times keeping sustainability in mind as the number one priority around which everything else revolves”. With this in mind, the area will demonstrate how the leading new products are geared towards achieving a lower environmental impact and reducing water and energy consumption so users can appreciate the financial savings they offer in pool maintenance, offsetting the cost of installing these innovations. Eloi Planes points towards another future trend: “The automation of processes, especially with smart systems to control the maintenance of pools and aquatic facilities thanks to the Internet of Things and its connection to mobile devices.” To explain these trends and introduce new products, along with case studies and practical applications of some of the solutions being exhibited at the show, there will be a Speakers’ Corner, where company experts will give talks. There will also be a programme of presentations and round tables to address issues relating to improving energy efficiency, safety, and pool renovation and maintenance. Additionally, an international exhibition will feature innovative architectural projects related to aquatic facilities, presented by the International Association for Sports and
HOLIDAY PARK SHOW ENCOMPASSES A GROWTH SECTOR FOR WET LEISURE COMPANIES
Taking place on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 November at Birmingham’s NEC, the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation show is a relatively new offering on the events calendar. Started in 2015 by The Prysm Group, now the biggest independent events’ organiser in the UK, the show aims to provide everything under one roof for the UK holiday park and leisure resort sector – and that of course includes the provision of various wet leisure facilities.

Leisure Facilities (IAKS Spain), as well as the prize-winning projects and installations from the Piscina & Wellness Awards 2017, from the new Wellness Spa Experience Awards, and from the first Student Architectural Competition being organised by the show.
DEMO AREAS AND WELLNESS SPA EXPERIENCE There are also two interesting new spaces being introduced this year: the Demo Pool, a fibreglass pool for holding technical trials on products and testing out different construction systems; and Demo Surf, a pool with a continuous artificial wave for surfing that may be of interest to water parks and tourist establishments. In addition, following an excellent response in 2015, the Wellness Spa Experience will be repeated. This comprises a wellness centre (that will be double the size of the previous event) where visitors can see the technical systems necessary for its operation, put queries to experts, and discover the latest trends in design, equipment and technology and the services and treatments available. The show will also be the venue for the Wellness Spa Experience professional seminars in which over 30 speakers will take part. There will be conferences, round tables and talks
or any of the other major European events, wet leisure companies have been quick to support the event, particularly with the continuing struggles of what was once LIW (now called BP: Fitness Trade Show). Of course, the offering is much smaller than a dedicated wet leisure show but for companies running a holiday park or operating within the wider resort and leisure sector, there’s a reasonable mix of suppliers that are exhibiting at the two-day event. When it comes to pools, Bosta UK (stand 2790) will be introducing a new range of one-piece fibreglass pools designed for the holiday park market. Accompanying them are offerings from other pool companies

OTHER CONFERENCES AND TRAINING Piscina & Wellness Barcelona will also be hosting various conferences and seminars, notably the III Aquatic Leisure Symposium, which will address safety regulations and the efficient and sustainable management of recreational facilities in water parks, hotels and campsites, as well as the new trends in aquatic-related leisure and the importance of the customer experience. For its part, ASOFAP will organise training courses for residential swimming pool installers and point-of-sale professionals. There will also be seminars and conferences on public swimming pools which, along with the wellness sector, is the sector with the biggest growth at this year’s show. For more information on the seminars and conferences plus the latest exhibitor listings, visit the exhibition website at www.piscinawellness.com
including Portrait Pools & Enclosures and World Of Leisure. Suntrap Systems (stand 2581) will be in attendance, showcasing their lifts and hoists which provide easier access to facilities for disabled people and Hippo Leisure (stand 2690) will promote both their indoor and outdoor interactive water play equipment which creates high visual impact and is easy to install and maintain. For those looking at hot tubs and the wider wellness market, which has performed particularly well over recent years, Urban Cedar (stand 2152) will display a range of award winning cedar hot tubs designed specifically for the holiday home industry.
AQUANALE OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME In a few weeks from now, aquanale 2017 will open its doors again. From 7 to 10 November 2017, over 300 exhibitors from more than 25 countries will showcase their new products and innovations at the German show which is co-located with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities. When the swimming pool facilities section of aquanale and FSB were co-located, one of the world’s biggest marketplaces in the industry was formed. Halls 6 and 7 of the Koelnmesse venue, which are clearly organised into six exciting theme worlds, are dedicated to domestic and public swimming pool facilities and the sauna, spa and wellness sectors. A supporting programme of trade events rounds off aquanale and provides crucial impetus for the industry, in particular with the 7th International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum. Aquanale is known for attracting exhibitors that produce quality products, and UK based companies including Certikin International, Golden Coast, Waterco Europe and SUEZ Purification & Disinfection Systems Ltd
Other industry names include BISHTA, Jacuzzi Spa & Bath Ltd and Aqua Warehouse whilst Anapos will exhibit the range of thermal spa equipment. Over 3,500 attendees are expected at the two-day show and entry to the show is free of charge with tickets available online. The event will feature in excess of 300 exhibitors plus over 150 seminars, however as mentioned, only a small percentage of those companies and along with the content will be wet leisure related. This of course could well grow in the run up to the event so for the latest exhibitor information, it is well worth visiting the show’s website at www.holidayparkshow.co.uk

are just a few of the companies that will be flying the flag in Cologne. In addition, there will also be a number of brands present that although not based in the UK, are well-known in our market such as Alukov with their pool enclosures, Covrex and their automatic slatted covers plus NIVEKO who will be presenting a fully-functional overflow pool with some unique design features.
THE INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING POOL AND WELLNESS FORUM The Forum will once again act as a link between the issues and debates in the private and public swimming pool sectors, bringing together relevant content for both sectors. This year, the programme’s focus during the four days of the trade fair will be on apprenticeships and continuing professional development, employee training, standardisation and health & safety, buildoperate-transfer models and thermal baths as a tool for developing tourism, as well as architecture and design. The award-winning projects that received the IOC/IPC/IAKS Architecture Prizes 2017 in the Pools, Spas and Wellness Facilities category will be presented for the first time at the forum.
ASSOCIATIONS AND AWARDS The International Academy for Swimming Pool, Sports and Leisure Facilities, is hosting a meeting in the afternoon of 9 November 2017 on swimming pool renovations. It will present examples of best practice and the state-of-the-art in technology. The international reach of aquanale and the 7th International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum is constantly expanding, as its cooperation with leading US associations, clubs and organisations impressively demonstrates. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) will give an in-depth overview of the US swimming pool market on 9 November 2017. This will be followed by the presentation of the EUSA Awards to the prize winners in recent years by European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) President Andreas Petridis. A special highlight will be presented by the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF)/Genesis 3, one of the leading US authorities on the design, planning and construction of private swimming pools. The presentation will focus on exciting design trends, new pool shapes and attractive garden planning. It will be followed by a podium discussion where high-

profile industry players from around the world will address a range of issues. Issues in the private swimming pool sector are also on the international forum’s agenda, and not just in relation to EN 16582 and EN 16713. The requirements of the first European standards for domestic swimming pools will be outlined and clarified. The forum will also provide guidance for day-to-day work in the industry by tackling issues relevant to a range of target audiences, such as strengthening communications competence for all visitor groups. The topics addressed at the forum are chosen by the German Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness (bsw) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS). At a joint special event, the European Waterpark Association and Koelnmesse GmbH will present fascinating examples demonstrating how public pools and sauna facilities can be transformed into real experience destinations for visitors by employing innovative materials. It will provide operators with ideas for redesigning their leisure spaces that take environmental and sustainability aspects into account, but also pay attention to emotional factors, such as the experience for the senses and experience orientation. You can find an overview of the complete programme for the 7th International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum along with further information on the exhibition at www.aquanale.de

OPINION
I Used To Think ‘Tomorrow’s World’ Was One Of The Best Programmes On Telly… Are all advances in technology ‘good’? Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams looks at the impact of new technologies and how they can have their downsides as well as ups
F
or 38 years, starting in 1965, Raymond Baxter, James Burke and a host of others presented us with the latest marvels in modern technology along with a simple, unshakeable belief. Even though the show was usually broadcast live and so was plagued with demonstrations going wrong and prototypes failing to perform, Tomorrow’s World always promised us a future that technology was going to make better. In many cases the show offered the British public its first chance to see key technologies that subsequently became commonplace. The home computer and the touchscreen were introduced to us in 1967. ATM cash machines in 1969. A digital watch in ’72 and a mobile phone in ’79. At the end of each series, the Prince of Wales gave an award for the best invention. Imagine that. The show was cancelled in 2003. There was certainly no shortage of inventions and technological breakthroughs 14 years ago but perhaps one thing that had happened was we had seen that the world of tomorrow had it’s down side as well as its ups. The ATM was well on the way to replacing entire branches of banks and all the staff that had worked there. The digital watch that had fallen out of vogue was slowly making a come back as an ironic fashion statement and we were all addicted to our Nokia 3310’s. As for the home computer, Windows XP was already running our lives.
TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY Harold Wilson had kicked off the whole ball game in the 60s by declaring that a new Britain would need to be ‘forged in the white heat of technology’ and by the millennium it had been. It just didn’t look exactly as we had been expecting. So, where is this history lesson taking us? I think the point is that you can only examine the impact of new technology by going back in time a little. It is safe to say that most people today would be praising the virtues of LED’s and electric cars for instance, but are all advances in technology ‘good’? Of those two, LEDs light up my world. Not only do they save on energy costs but the possibilities with light are endless,

transforming a pool into a cool pool and the water into a canvas. And if you look at one LED it is a good and glorious thing. But in many parts of the world, legislation is now in place to ban ‘legacy lighting’ and replace it with more sustainable options such as LEDs. Now, a few billion LEDs look rather different to just the one. There are already concerns about open cast mining for the rare earth that is needed in manufacture and, when these units end up on the rubbish heap which, no matter how long lasting they are, they eventually will, there are concerns about those materials leaching out into the environment. Hopefully the benefits will outweigh any problems but, in all honesty, time will tell.
BUT HOW WILL WE PROFIT FROM IT? Most new technology is, at least in part, designed to be a new way of making money. The biggest exception to this is also the most influential invention in our lifetimes. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and then made his idea freely available to everyone with no patent, no royalties due. It could have made him the richest man on Earth. So, thank you, Tim for the internet. That’s brilliant, but… Data held on us by companies and countries has destroyed the idea of privacy, at least changed it out of all recognition. The dark web is your opportunity to buy everything from stolen credit card details to fake passports or an abducted supermodel. The echo chamber of social media has gone
a long way to spreading the word of the altright and the average person in the UK now spends more time online than sleeping. As a result, over a third of web users in the UK have undertaken a deliberate ‘digital detox’ to try and wean themselves off their addiction to Tim’s generous gift.
“TOMORROW, TOMORROW, I LOVE YA, TOMORROW...” In our industry, it’s difficult to see the negative in any of the technological advance made over the years. We’ve developed new and more efficient ways of heating pool water with heat pumps and no longer have to rely on the finite resource of fossil fuels. Water treatment has come on in leaps and bounds (yep, that’s a plug for FROG), UV water treatment means we can use less chemicals and more efficient pumps use less energy. These are all good things, aren’t they? And I wonder what the future will bring? I think our industry is on a wave of technological change and that we have all seen the benefits of environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. What innovations that will lead to, I just don’t know. But I am looking forward to finding out what tomorrow’s world has in store. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
