With the nights drawing in at what seems like a shockingly quick pace, the end of what has been (for the most part) a rather hectic and uncertain year is now on the horizon. As a result of COVID, the reaction to it, plus a number of other factors, various challenges still remain though and, of course, just to add to the current challenging times, inflation and supply chain issues are becoming more obvious and applicable to an ever-widening range of items as the weeks go by. As an industry that’s been pretty blessed by being busy and largely insulated from the worst of the pandemic to date, most have witnessed their effects throughout the year, so it’s not really come as any great surprise. It’s certainly not come out of the blue. How or if this affects the wet leisure industry going forward though still remains to be seen, but it’s clear that both prices and delivery times are travelling on the same path with product availability going in the opposite direction. With half term approaching and with the first few chilly mornings and nights making an appearance, it feels the season finally has some closure and businesses now often use these weeks and months to reflect on another challenging year. With the summer behind us, autumn has traditionally heralded the start of show season too, which in turn would normally mean new product launches and a chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed. That of course was the normal routine before COVID-19, but (and I say this with my fingers and more genuinely crossed) that routine and
Talking of sectors, we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers flexible and bespoke solutions for both domestic and commercial markets alike. High-end hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands. We’ve also an in depth look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the garden swimming season whilst simultaneously reducing the maintenance and costs of pool ownership. Counter-current systems also return as we look at the latest products which are powering smaller pools and putting them on a par with their larger counterparts. As if that wasn’t enough, and having touched on it already, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his thoughts on the supply chain issues, whilst the STA having sealed a new partnership ask Colin Day from Lovibond® Tintometer to answer some questions on water testing. We’ve also a piece form Sunbeach Spas which covers their plans for a smoother running business model, plus a piece from Swim England which warns of potential pool closures in the commercial sector. An impressive technically-advanced residential pool project is also highlighted too. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with everything covered, hopefully we’ve provided something for everyone in this latest issue. I hope you enjoy reading it.

New Surrey Leisure Centre Gets The Green Light Spelthorne Borough Council’s Planning Committee has approved plans to build a new Leisure Centre in the Borough. The state-of-the-art facility will be located in Knowle Green in Staines-upon-Thames and in addition to a comprehensive range of sports facilities and amenities, will benefit from a 25m, eight lane swimming pool with micro filtration technology and spectator seating, a 20m x 10m learner pool and a splash pad plus sauna and steam rooms. As well as being a modern design with all the latest facilities one would expect, the new leisure centre will also be extremely energy efficient as the first centre in the UK to be built to the ultra-low energy ‘Passivhaus’ standard. The Council expects the new centre to use 60-70% less energy than a typical modern leisure centre – a major step in helping the Council achieve its aim of becoming carbon neutral in the coming years. Chair of Spelthorne Borough Council’s Community Wellbeing Committee, Cllr Sandra Dunn, said: “I am very excited that this important project has been given approval to proceed to the next stage.
“Feedback from residents has heavily influenced the location, design and facilities and we have worked hard to ensure the new building meets the Gold standard for environmental credentials. “This is going to be a fantastic hub for
all the community, offering a great range of sports facilities and activities for everyone to enjoy. I am sure it will make a huge difference in encouraging residents to maintain healthy lifestyles. I look forward to seeing the plans take shape.” Building work is due to start in early 2022, with facilities planned to open in 2024. The current centre will be demolished once the new facility has been built.
Certikin Moves Lock, Stock And Barrel To New HQ By Xmas Certikin has occupied its current offices and warehouses in the thriving Oxfordshire market town of Witney for 31 years, during which time it has expanded its footprint several times. However, the building no longer meets the requirements of a burgeoning business. Determined to retain the experienced and loyal workforce together with its central location, Certikin secured a 125,000 sq. ft. site just two miles down the road and the construction of the purpose-built warehouse and office development began in the Autumn of 2019. The new premises will house the UK’s largest stock of water leisure equipment, comprising over 9,500 product lines for both domestic and commercial pools for new build and retro-fit markets as well as wellness, spas, saunas and aquatics. Such is the speed of the construction of Certikin’s new Headquarters that practical completion has been achieved and the fit out programme has started in earnest. A gradual transference of business is planned to start next month, with the new Tungsten Park site fully operational in December 2021. The new site in Witney is in addition to the company’s state-of-

the-art, computer-controlled swimming pool liner plant in Leeds, manufacturing tailor-made pool liners and covers as well as a range of EPS steps and spa covers. The impressive new HQ is located on Witney’s Downs Road and is part of a 24-acre site located just 500 metres from a new junction on the A40. It allows easy access to Oxford and Cheltenham and, in turn, the main arterial routes of the A34, M40 and M5 motorways. Neil Murray, Managing Director for Certikin commented: “As well as being an ideal location, Tungsten Park offers us the space and enhanced facilities that we need to suit the complex needs of our growing business. This, combined with the dedication of our loyal 130-strong workforce, will improve our operational efficiency and secure Certikin’s future.” Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

IN BRIEF PWTAG COUNTS THE COST OF RECOVERY The last 18 months have been tough on pools. The cost of having them closed and then reopening them safely – twice – has been immense. Running public pools is expensive anyway, and keeping them ticking over with no revenue has cost millions. So where does PWTAG stand and what does the future hold for the organisation? Keeping pools safe has required a lot of work. HSE, Swim England etc have played their part of course. Their funding is secure. As reported in SPN previously, PWTAG has been key providing a series of technical notes on COVID (updated as necessary), an international online conference, plus collaborating on vital research. Meanwhile its core work continued: the free code of practice has been updated and the Poolmark scheme is expanding, linked with important work on training standards. Throughout the pandemic, PWTAG has fielded queries from all sides – councils, operators, swimmers and more. All this was fuelled by the voluntary efforts of its experts and funded, just about, by sales of its books and a few subscriptions from various membership sources. There’s been no government funding – but they’re working on it!
ELEVATE TO RETURN TO EXCEL IN 2022 Following suspension due to the pandemic, the Elevate trade event will return to ExCel London in 2022 for its 5th edition. Elevate has quickly become a must attend event for thousands of public and private sector decision makers, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals and sport scientists. In 2022 visitors will benefit from free high-quality CPD content and meet with hundreds of leading suppliers across six dedicated exhibition sectors.

KLAFS Announces Acquisition Of Luxury Pool Supplier Guncast KLAFS, one of the world-leaders in the design and installation of sauna and spa facilities, has announced its acquisition of Guncast, one of the UK’s most prestigious swimming pool suppliers. Born from a partnership which began in 2016, when Guncast was chosen as a supplier of KLAFS products to the UK market, the relationship has since evolved to a marriage of the two leading wellness companies, now offering UK clients the comprehensive spa package under one roof. Speaking about the move, Stefan Schöllhammer, CEO of KLAFS said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Guncast into the KLAFS family. Since 2016, when we first partnered with Guncast as a supplier, we have enjoyed tremendous growth in the UK, and this partnership will help us to expand even more rapidly. In particular, we are seeing more and more clients wanting the complete spa experience, incorporating a pool, sauna and other treatment rooms. With Guncast under the KLAFS umbrella, we will be able to provide this comprehensive package in-house, streamlining the process for clients and ensuring an exceptional final design.” Jack Harding, CEO of Guncast commented:
“This deal weds together two brands that share the same philosophy and DNA, delivering projects driven by luxury and quality. After five years as a KLAFS partner, this next step feels like a natural progression. We look forward to sharing our continuing success and growth together for many more decades.” KLAFS and Guncast deliver wellness facilities across luxury hotels, private residences, commercial spas and high-end residential developments. Coinciding with this announcement, Guncast is launching a new office and showroom in Cheshire in October, extending their luxury wellness brand and services across the UK. Puddle Ducks Make A Splash With Official Launch Of Flagship Pool Local child and baby swim school, Puddle Ducks was excited to officially launch its flagship pool in Barons Quay, Northwich last month, and celebrated with a welcome event for everyone involved in the creation of the pool – the first in a high-street retail unit. The state-of-the-art pool, which began construction before the pandemic, is now open for Puddle Ducks’ customers to enjoy. Everyone who was instrumental in the project was invited to the launch, to celebrate the monumental effort that has gone into helping founders, Jo Stone and Tracy Townend’s dream come true.
The ribbon was cut by Town Mayor, Sam Naylor, who was also kind enough to say a few words, complimenting how Puddle Ducks have re-envisioned the retail space of Barons. Jo Stone commented: “It is amazing that we have been able to create such a wonderful facility in Northwich for children and families to enjoy and use for learning. But of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without the many people who worked tirelessly to plan, design, build and execute the project. “It was mine and Tracy’s dream when launching Puddle Ducks in Northwich 20 years ago to have a pool of our own, and the feeling of pride now that it has all come together is truly indescribable. Our daughters were our inspiration, and it was wonderful to have all of our daughters at the launch event – one of whom is working at the pool as a teacher and another as a pool operator! “As a franchise brand with 33 offices across the UK, we plan to help all our franchisees establish their own pool facilities in their local areas, as they are so valuable to the community and truly help children to develop and learn.”

IN BRIEF AWARD-WINNING PRODUCT FEATURES IN CENTRAL LONDON PARK Ustigate Waterplay were delighted that the award winning Vortex Astra No.3 featuring Twirltec™ made its way to the UK in 2021 and the product made its debut in a new aquatic play area at Kensington Memorial Park. Ustigate Waterplay initially installed a Spwlashpad® at Kensington Memorial Park in 2007. Due to its popularity The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea raised funds for a new theme and product mix complete with the Vortex Safeswap™ Anchor System. Kensington Memorial Park can now be seen with a new variety of play options and a nature theme. The Council will also have the ability to exchange products in the future without the need to break the ground due to the installation of Vortex’s Safeswap™ Anchor System.
PLANNING PERMISSION GRANTED FOR SWIMMING FACILITIES IN WARWICKSHIRE Plans for a multi-millionpound upgrade of Abbey Fields Swimming Pool in Kenilworth have been given the green light. Following approval by Warwick District Council’s Planning Committee, work is set to start early next year to create a brand-new facility. This will include the addition of a second indoor pool with an adjoining sun terrace. The designs for the new pool follow consultation with leading specialists and advice from Swim England and will have a moveable floor allowing the water depth to be altered in a matter of minutes to meet the needs of young children, parents and babies or aqua aerobics sessions. There will also be direct pool access via a hoist from a ‘Changing Place’ facility for the disabled, the first of its kind in the District.

LPW Pools – The Perfect Product For Water Technics It is no surprise that over the last 18 months there has been a surge in demand for swimming pools. Warmer weather – at least in 2020 – and not being able to travel abroad has seen the industry as a whole boom! And this has most definitely been the case for installer Water Technics, with 2020 being their busiest year to date. The company’s most popular products have without doubt been LPW one-piece pools, supplied to them by Fairlocks Pool Products which are available in sizes from 6 metres x 3.6 metres up to 12 metres x 4.6 metres. The company have found that navigating through rural areas and small villages may dictate the size of pool or if a one-piece pool is the right choice of pool at all. Access is the number one factor when considering a pool of this nature, so site visits and route checks must be carried out prior to ordering. That said, the ease of installation for this type of swimming pool makes it an ideal addition to any
home, either inside or out. If coordinated correctly, swimming could be achieved within a few weeks. In a perfect scenario, excavation can be achieved in 1-3 days and a reinforced concrete base is added and allowed to set. This allows for the plant room installation to take place concurrently. There are several customizable options prior to order completion. These include stainless steel fittings, RGB lights, and counter-current systems – perfect for smaller sized pools. If timings are adhered to and trades are effectively communicating, the installation process is fast and effective giving the best service and product to the customer in the most efficient amount of time. The result is a stunning and stylish pool. Water Technics 0800 246 5879 www.watertechnics.co.uk
Edinburgh Leisure Making Aquatic Activity More Accessible Funding from Swim England has enabled Edinburgh Leisure’s Royal Commonwealth Pool to install a ‘Poolpod’, a submersible lift, creating inclusive swimming environments for people with long-term health conditions, disabilities and rehabilitation needs. The London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT) provided a £750,000 grant in 2020 to allow Swim England and its partners, the Activity Alliance, Community Leisure UK and GLL – to enhance swimming provisions at selected venues across the UK. The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh is the only Scottish recipient, out of 20 sites across the UK, to receive the funding. With one in five people in our population disabled or living with a long-term health condition, ‘the Poolpod’ gives dignified and independent access to the water for swimmers. Lynne Bauba, Manager at Edinburgh Leisure explained: “The Poolpod was installed just before the lockdown in March
2020, and with the reduced capacity in our pool when we reopened due to the pandemic, we haven’t been able to shout about the Poolpod until now. “However, regular customers with long-term health conditions, disabilities and rehabilitation needs, have been delighted with this new facility.” Edinburgh Leisure boasts 18 swimming pools across the city, including their stunning Victorian swimming baths and pools within secondary schools. They offer a variety of pool-based activities to suit all abilities and while the Royal Commonwealth Pool is the only one to boast a Poolpod, most of them have hoists, which the leisure attendants are trained on, to assist people less able to access the pools. This exciting initiative from The London Marathon Charitable Trust is making swimming pools across the UK more accessible and ensuring a more inclusive customer experience for all.

Leisure Centre Pool Features Stress-free Lighting From EVA Optic Places Leisure Camberley has recently opened to the public offering a variety of facilities and activities for the local community in Surrey Heath. Completed on time despite the pandemic, the £22m centre’s wet leisure facilities include a 25-metre 6-lane pool, learner pool with adjustable floor and children’s splash pad. Project builders Pellikaan Construction selected EVA Optic’s EVAline lighting for the pool hall, having previously used the lighting system within leisure centres around the UK with great success. Unlike indirect lighting, EVA Optic direct lighting is fitted overhead shining down over the water, producing minimal glare and surface reflection. This allows greater visibility into the water and provides a safer environment for bathers. Twelve 120W EVAline lights and 12 60W EVAline lights were installed around the pool hall. Industry guidelines state that light levels must be minimum 300 Lux, with an illumination uniformity value of 0.7 or higher. Despite its lower
wattage, EVAline lighting at Camberley provided powerful illumination and delivered an average Lux of 495 as well as a uniformity of 0.81. Electrical contractor Eleciserve was responsible for the full design and installation of the electrical package. James Perry Contract Manager at Eleciserve explained: “EVAline lighting is extremely impressive. It is very high quality and well made. Not only are the lights easy to install, but they are also very easy to maintain, as the fittings don’t have batteries. This makes life much easier for those running the facility. “EVAline lights also blend in really well with the surroundings. You almost don’t notice them when you walk around the pool, which is important because it means there isn’t any strong glare.” EVA Optic direct lighting is supplied in the UK through leading wet leisure distributor Golden Coast. Have Your Say In The Wet Leisure Industry Survey 2021
Golden Coast has once again launched its much-anticipated annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey and is inviting all those working in the sector to share insight into the challenges and achievements faced throughout the past year. Completed anonymously, the survey gathers opinions and feedback from businesses around the UK. Responses are collated into a detailed report that highlights trends and statistics to help companies make informed business decisions. Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast explained: “The survey is an invaluable tool that companies can use to see how the sector is performing, and how this might impact their business next year. We encourage anyone working in wet leisure to get involved, and to share the survey as widely as possible. “The domestic market fared well in 2020
10 October 2021 SPN 4+7+9+10_SPN_October_2021_News_General.indd 10
as customers invested heavily in pools and spas, given how much time they were spending at home. But it remains to be seen how sales compared in 2021. Stakeholders in the commercial sector may have seen a continuing rise in demand for products and services this year since some leisure centres, hotels and spas were revamping and updating their facilities in preparation for reopening. When government restrictions
eased in early summer there was a boom in staycations, and we want to know how all of this affected the sector. “Additionally, challenges regarding Brexit, logistics and supply may have impacted many businesses, so it will be helpful to see how they have coped with this, and what their plans are for the year ahead.” The Wet Leisure Industry Survey 2021 can be taken online or a paper version can be requested. It does not contain compulsory questions, and only takes a few minutes to complete. The survey report will be available to view online and at SPATEX 2022. EMEC Appoints Vanessa Lloyd As Leisure Manager For The UK
STA’s CEO Honoured With Outstanding Leader Award At this year’s 2021 UKActive awards, STA’s CEO Dave Candler was honoured to receive the coveted Outstanding Leadership Award, which is a special award, voted for by the industry. Dave was appointed CEO in 2016 and along with his senior management team has transformed STA. In recognition of this, STA won ‘Supplier of the Year’ at the 2019 UKActive awards, but then everything changed when the country was forced into lockdown because of the pandemic. As a not-for-profit charity, STA wholly relies on income from its membership, qualifications, and award sales, so when COVID-19 hit in March 2020 and pools closed, it goes without saying that this was a very worrying time for the organisation. For Dave and his team, business survival had to be STA’s priority, but then as the weeks passed and
the reality of the pandemic truly hit home, it soon became clear that STA’s members and swim-schools were wholly reliant on the organisation too to lead and guide them through these unprecedented circumstances. “Swimming has been one of the most impacted sports (Sport England: 2021) during the pandemic, so, it’s fair to say that it has been one hell of a rollercoaster journey, and we are by no means out of the woods yet, but STA is proud of the route it took in prioritising the needs of all those involved in delivering grassroots swimming. If there are any positives to come out of the pandemic, it’s how we’ve all come together as an STA family to support each other – long may this continue,” said Dave. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk
The team at EMEC have supported the UK wet leisure industry with the supply of chemical dosing equipment, technical expertise, and on site services for over 25 years. Keen to further strengthen this offering, the Lincolnshirebased company have recently welcomed a new member to the team. Vanessa Lloyd joined in July having worked in the industry for the previous ten years. “My main focus during my time in the industry has been water treatment having found this area to be fulfilling to work in. Working alongside EMEC whilst holding a position with a distributor, I was already aware of their professionalism and quality of product,” said Vanessa. Explaining her remit, she continued: “Chemical dosing is challenging to get right and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into my role which is solely focused on helping customers manage the whole process from selecting equipment, on budget and fit for purpose, right through to installation and after sales services. “In my experience of supplying this equipment, the challenge is selecting products which meet the operators’ expectations as well as industry guidance and ensuring that it is installed and operated in a safe and correct manner. “What’s clear is that supplying equipment doesn’t start and end with delivery and installation, that’s just one part of the overall challenge. We know that operators are most satisfied when equipment is specified and installed with their expectations, requirements and ability level in mind and when it’s serviced and maintained in line with recommendations. “I’m here to build on that and help provide customers a quality service wherever I can.” EMEC Pumps 01529 300567 www.emecpumps.com

Certikin’s iSAVER – An Efficient Upgrade For Single-phase Pumps The Certikin iSAVER Inverter is a low-cost solution designed to reduce the running costs of pool circulation pumps and improve the efficiency of swimming pool filtration by as much as a 60%. Pumps in swimming pools invariably run at higher flow rates than necessary, and the iSAVER Inverter enables owners to control both pump flow rates, and pump run times. Allowing the pump to run at a slower speed reduces power consumption to reduce electricity running costs. Reducing the pump speed often does not significantly affect the filtration rate of the pool due to the corresponding reduction of
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 15+17_SPN_October_2021_Prod+Eco_News.indd 15
pressure and resistance within the filter. Featuring a high contrast display panel, the iSAVER Inverter also includes a timer to control the pool circulation pump. The pump can be programmed to run at different speeds for each time programme. The unit works with virtually all single-phase pool circulation pumps and two sizes are available: • For circulation pumps up to 1hp (output power up to
1.1kW from inverter) • For circulation pumps up to 2HP (output power up to 2.2kW from inverter) With a reduction in running speeds, owners will also benefit from a quieter running pump, plus see a longer life span for the motor and other pool equipment. Amazon Launchpad Success For SolarisKit Start-up A Dundee company that launched a pioneering thermal collector flat pack kit following support from Royal Bank of Scotland’s Climate Entrepreneur Accelerator has been accepted onto Amazon Launchpad, enabling the product to be offered globally. SolarisKit was established in 2019 by mechanical engineer Dr Faisal Ghani to harness solar energy in an affordable, practical way to heat water. Its S400 flat-packable solar thermal collector is one of the easiest and cheapest solar thermal collectors to install in the world – and can be used to heat above-ground pools during the summer months, or provide hot water to camping and glamping sites. With a footprint of 540mm x 540mm per collector, the space saving solution means owners can enjoy an uncluttered garden. The product is compatible with all pool sizes, as solar collectors can be joined together to add more heat to a pool. Available to buy direct or on Amazon, SolarisKit has pledged to plant 25 trees globally for every kit sold, through a partnership with Eden Reforestation Project. With ambitious plans to sell up to 160 S200 thermal collectors per week, SolarisKit is set to contribute to the planting of 4,000 trees, offsetting roughly 40,000 kilogrammes of carbon per year. Amazon Launchpad is an exclusive, invitation-only programme designed specifically for innovative and unique brands to accelerate their growth on the platform. SolarisKit earned its place in the scheme thanks to founder Dr Ghani’s experience in the Royal Bank of Scotland Climate Entrepreneur Accelerator. SolarisKit Ltd 07470 493134 www.solariskit.com
New Piranha Clip® – The Ultimate Grip For Domestic Pool Covers The new Piranha Clip® from Plastica is a unique and ingenious way of connecting a standard webbing strap to an averaged sized domestic pool cover. The Piranha Clip® can be placed into position firmly but temporarily while being adjusted across the cover end to ensure perfect alignment. Once in position, the locking wings will click permanently into place. These clips replace the short strap and buckle assemblies and require no holes to be made in the cover. General feedback of this unassuming yet effective new product has been positive from various test sites. Simply put it’s a
‘well-designed’ and ‘time saving’ new fixing that owners of this type of pool cover can simply ‘fit and forget’. If placed at regular intervals to spread the load it will pull the cover with ease. The fully patented design has been manufactured to take a full 150 Newton load per fixing. The Piranha Clip® will be available this October – contact Plastica or an existing account manager to arrange a visit and see or be sent a sample. Plastica 01424 857857 www.plasticapools.net
SwamCam System Provides Advanced Pool Safety The SwamCam system is a brand-new innovation in pool security. SwamCam streamlines several technologies to create a customised and richly featured camera alarm system for the pool environment. It uses AI detection and alerts users to human activity at the pool area before they even enter the water. The team behind SwamCam consists of senior engineers that have many years of experience at technology giants such as Motorola, which has enabled the company to make the SwamCam system the most advanced of its kind. Some of the distinct features in comparison to other pool alarms are that the SwamCam alerts users to a potential drowning before a
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 15+17_SPN_October_2021_Prod+Eco_News.indd 17
person enters the water. Other systems only alert users after a child has already fallen into the water. Another essential feature is that SwamCam sounds an alert in three different locations: outside the home from the camera’s speaker, inside the home from the wireless alarm and remotely from the app. The goal was to cover every possible area to provide the best chance of an immediate response. A backup system has also been integrated to sound an alert from the camera and wireless alarm in case the Wi-Fi signal goes down.
Additionally, SwamCam has a fully integrated app that allows for a myriad of rich and interactive features such as automatic re-arm option in case owners forget to set it, two-way audio, live video, a speed-dial button to call for emergency services and a suite of highly customisable settings. Though fully usable and efficient out of the box, SwamCam also includes the option of premium features for additional fees. SwamCam +1 888 679 2622 www.theswamcam.com

HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS NEWS
Professional Cyclists Put Hot Tubs To The Test A trio of professional Spanish cyclists were recently interviewed by Europe’s largest hot tub distributor Superior Wellness, and each praised the use of hot tubs after exercise. Ultra-cycling champion Ziortza Villa, semi-professional cyclist Adrian Garcia and ex professional cyclist Alvaro Robredo visited the Reyman Electrobombas showroom in Gordexola, Spain to put hot tubs to the test. The session was led by Ziortza who is a physiotherapist by profession. She understands that muscle recovery and optimal muscle maintenance is vital to get riders back on the bike to compete. The balance between body and mind is fundamental for wellbeing and hydrotherapy provides this – so combining cycling and hot tubs makes perfect sense. The three cyclists took a dip in a Platinum Spas Arizona which has 43 jets and provides massage options for the entire body. Ziortza talked about the benefits of a hydrotherapy massage and she said: “The key parts of the body to work on are the feet and legs as they are exposed to muscular overload. The hot tub really helps to relieve and strengthen the muscle tone
and will also prevent overloads and injuries.” Adrian added: “Massage is not only necessary for competition but also essential if you want to perform on a daily basis and avoid injuries. Being in the warm water was the perfect muscle recovery therapy. I felt recharged and renewed.” After seven seasons in professional cycling Alvaro knows the importance of recovery and how massage can aid this. “When you first start in sport you don’t realise the benefits that hydrotherapy can bring. You then realise you should have started much earlier. There are differences with the manual massage, there is physical friction because it squeezes you and you suffer a little bit and I think that with water you get a more relaxing point.” Superior Wellness 01246 559071 www.superiorwellness.co.uk

IN BRIEF WAHC 2021 MOVES TO VIRTUAL PLATFORM The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) Board of Directors has made the unanimous decision to hold the 2021 World Aquatic Health Conference (WAHC) in a virtual format only, in the interest of public health and safety. WAHC 2021 will now be presented as an entirely virtual event from 7-9 December. Speaking in September, PHTA President and CEO Sabeena Hickman, CAE said: “Earlier this month, PHTA surveyed registered and potential attendees and speakers to understand attendee sentiment regarding WAHC. “The results of these surveys showed that the audience’s risk tolerance was rapidly diminishing for an in-person event. So, due to the continued spread of COVID-19 and the danger of the Delta variant, we felt it was in the best interest of our speakers, attendees and sponsors to move to a virtual format once again.” All current registrations will automatically transfer to the virtual event, which will offer 36 on-demand educational sessions that attendees can view at their own pace. All sessions will be available for 30 days after the event, giving attendees time to earn the maximum amount of CEUs.

NIVEKO Expansion Increases Efficiency And ‘Green’ Credentials NIVEKO specialises in high-quality custom-made swimming pools and at the beginning of the year, the company completed its new production hall. Covering an area of 2,550m2, the new building is situated in the immediate vicinity of its existing complex in the Czech Republic and will be fully equipped and adapted in line with the increase in production capacity. The company built it in response to the current market situation, which has seen demand for private pools soar to unprecedented levels. NIVEKO met this challenge head on and took the necessary steps to meet that demand. The new hall features cutting-edge technology to increase the proportion of automated production: two cranes, automatic CNC machine tools and a fully automatic rack storage
system – the first of its kind in the country – which is able to meet the requirements of the just-intime system. The development has enabled NIVEKO to increase its production capacity by 50%, becoming more flexible provides the firm with an even stronger base. It goes without saying that the company has introduced efficient procedures to make the process of producing pools smoother than ever. Like the original building, the new hall also provides the company’s fully trained employees with an outstanding clean working environment and facilities. Residual material left over from production is always recycled, from small offcuts to bigger pieces – not a bit is wasted. Owing to its quality, High-Tech
polymer is absolutely ideal for subsequent processing. The firm’s modern production processes guarantee that generated waste is not a burden on the environment. In fact, it is further processed in various branches of industry for a wide range of products. NIVEKO looks further than the nearest horizon and strives to make the world a better place. The ‘green’ aspect, social awareness and respect for the environment are the basic building blocks on which NIVEKO is based. Its broad range of activities in this regard are clear evidence of the direction the firm is taking and what its priorities are. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Full Steam Ahead For Our Still Busy Industry With face-to-face opportunities returning, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes provides an update on a number of initiatives taking place
H
aving commented in the last issue of SPN about the excellent performance of Team GB at the Olympics, the Paralympics GB athletes (including from Northern Ireland) continued their remarkable achievements with another second place in the medals table at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. The industry will be awarding our own gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2022 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (hosted by SPATA and BISHTA), so members are encouraged to enter and have a chance to be recognised for their hard work. The winners will be announced in Coventry on Tuesday 1 February. The deadline for entry is at the end of October, so please go online now. For details of the evening, see the following page and please remember, attendance at the event is open to the whole industry! This time of year sees many industry events, including the annual Information and Networking Days for both BISHTA and SPATA. Although it had been hoped to have these events taking place at venues in Andover and Doncaster, with members so busy, a decision was taken to hold them online, so that members could attend them without having to travel (or they can still choose to watch the presentations at a later date on-demand)! A really exciting mix of industry and external speakers was assembled for these days. BISHTA members will
have heard updates on various aspects of how BISHTA promotes hot tub safety. From working with the HSE, where BISHTA members (and the wider industry) have been providing details of microbiological tests in business settings, to identify if there are any issues and whether the HSG 282 guidance needs adapting in any way. Our friends from Trading Standards will have provided updates on some member factsheets they have been revising. Sallie Leslie-Golding will have detailed the latest news on how BISHTA and the industry have been in the news over the past year, and how several BISHTA (and SPATA) members have taken advantage of guidance from business advisors such as Mark Page, who will have spoken on matters relating to supporting your business – he also has an article in this issue on page 29. There will have also been updates from BISHTA and details of the preparations for the AGM. At SPATA’s Information and Networking Days, members will have received updates on workforce development, including qualifications where work continues with the ISPE and the STA to develop opportunities for members (and the wider industry). There were also sessions on Trading Standards, Business Support, and the industry in the news session, plus details of the changes to the SPATA Awards, which will offer more opportunities of acknowledgement for members’ workmanship. Finally, there was also the chance for SPATA members to hear what their trade association has been working on and have their say on matters relating to the AGM. With BISHTA and SPATA also being

members of the BSPF, the three respective AGMs for these companies will be held on Thursday 4 November in Andover. By the time of the next issue of SPN, we will know who has won the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards for 2021, being held at Piscina & Wellness in Barcelona on Monday 29 November, so good luck to all of the entries (but especially those from the UK!). Spain will have also hosted the WAPSA meeting in Barcelona on Monday, 29 November, so this will be an action-packed day for all national pool and spa associations. There will be plenty of opportunities to understand how different countries organise their associations, so it is hoped to find sources of interest that can translate to our industry to share with BISHTA and SPATA members (and the wider industry, where applicable). Also in this issue, there’s a piece from Wright Hassall on suspending and terminating contracts correctly (see page 30), an article from our friends at Nsure on their PoolSure and SpaSure insurance packages (see page 31), plus an update from the SPATEX team (see page 32). Enjoy the remaining part of this year, and I look forward to seeing you in Coventry at SPATEX 2022!

Are You Just Too Busy? In this issue, business coach Mark Page shares tips for owners to overcome business challenges and strive for excellent results
M
ark Page recently shared his knowledge with BISHTA and SPATA members as a guest presenter at their annual Information & Networking Days. Throughout his career, Mark has helped teams and individuals accomplish their business goals and reach their potential. His analytical mind and ability to get people talking candidly about their challenges help Mark see the ‘big picture’, which often eludes business owners. Before becoming a coach, Mark worked for a large corporation and built up a reputation as a trouble-shooter. “Whenever a department or team was in trouble, I’d be sent to work out what was going wrong and why. Sometimes it was people in the wrong role or lacking training/motivation. Other times, the processes or performance metrics were the barrier. The point is this: there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for overcoming business challenges. Each scenario must be taken on its own merit and given care and respect.” This combination of business experience and the ability to tailor his approach to each client and situation has ensured that Mark has been in constant demand since becoming a business coach. He has helped business owners overcome their challenges and build the business they want by working with hundreds of clients. In the current climate, many businesses are working flat out with the feeling they are doing brilliantly with an extended order book several weeks, if not months ahead. However, when they look at the cash in the bank, it’s a different story. Simply put, they may be busy, but the model needs to change to create more money in less time. Many good businesses have hit a virtual ‘glass ceiling’, struggling to break through for one reason or another. Could this be you? Do you suffer from the three most common frustrations in business? • Money – the business doesn’t generate the sales, profits and cash flow the business owners desire or believe possible. • Team – challenges recruiting the right people; the team doesn’t perform to the level the business owner desires. • Time – the owner works too many hours in the business; therefore, missing out
on time with family and friends and developing interests outside of the company, and the business doesn’t work without the owners. You went into business in the first place to give you and your family a better life. The reality is, you’re working long hours and possibly not earning enough money to justify the extra responsibility and pressure you’re under. Perhaps you don’t spend enough time with your friends and family? Maybe when you do, you’re still thinking about work? Possibly you’re wondering if there is a better way? The answer to this is simple – there is a better way. Wealth is not just money, but also time and health. There is no point in having money with no time to enjoy it, or the business has robbed you of your health. Likewise, time and health with insufficient funds to enjoy is also not an ideal outcome either. Wealth is money, time and health.
WHAT IS IN IT FOR THE BUSINESS OWNER? • You will have clarity and focus on what’s essential… and your levels of focus will be sky high! • Find the most cost-effective sales appeal

for your products and services to set your business head and shoulders above the competition. • You’ll stop selling on price and learn to sell on value. • Your business and personal financials will dramatically improve. • You’ll receive a step-by-step marketing plan that significantly increases new customers, revenues and profits. • You’ll gain an advantage over your competition to help grow your business. • Your leadership skills and abilities will rapidly develop. • Your team will be inspired and outperform your expectations. • Get the team to a stage where your business will perform for profit so that you can take time out for hobbies and holidays. • You will feel challenged, stretched and most importantly, happier because of your achievement levels. • You will get a hotline to someone who helps you stay focused, answers pressing questions, and can help you grow your business. Suspension And Termination – A Means To An End Or An End To Your Means? In this issue, Paul Slinger, a Partner within the Construction & Engineering Team at Wright Hassall, looks at a number of differences companies can expect when working with main contractors on various swimming pool and spa projects
C
ontractors will often threaten to suspend or terminate their contract when they are not happy that the other party is complying with their side of the bargain, often because they believe they are not being paid fairly or appropriately. However, the law might take a different view on whether or not the other side is behaving properly and, even if they are not behaving properly, whether their behaviour is in fact so bad that it should allow the innocent party to terminate the contract.
SUSPENSION Suspension is often carried out without taking advice. Typically the aggrieved party says “until you do x, y and z (normally pay me at least a certain amount of money), I am not returning to site”. The thought process is typically “I don’t want to keep losing money by staying on site and working if you are not going to pay for it”. However, the law does not recognise a right to suspend unless it is contained in the contract. Many suspensions are, therefore, a breach of contract. By suspending services, you might not, therefore, improve your position by forcing the other party to do what you want, rather you might expose yourself to substantial liabilities by delaying/disrupting the whole project and facing additional costs from the other party, including ultimately the excess costs of a replacement contractor to complete your works if the stalemate persists. Construction contracts only tend to include a single specific right to suspend services in
the event of non-payment of an interim sum. However, any such non-payment must be of a sum that has legally become due through the proper observance of the payment mechanisms in the contract. Payment mechanisms vary significantly, so it is always worth getting advice on whether or not the sum has legally fallen overdue and whether or not the other party has a valid reason for not making payment. A suspension will also usually require giving at least seven days’ notice of the intention to suspend to allow the paying party to make amends. If your construction contract does not contain such a right, then unless you are dealing with a residential occupier, it is highly likely that it will be implied into your contract in any event by the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, as amended. In summary, suspension can be effective but make sure that you have a right to do so first. In non-payment scenarios, it is wise to take action sooner rather than later because suspension will have less leverage at the end of the project. Your cash flow might already have taken a severe dent that could be challenging to recover.
TERMINATION Termination is the ‘nuclear option’, so parties do tend to consider their position more carefully. Termination is a high-stakes game because if the other party has done something so fundamentally wrong that you can lawfully terminate, you are likely to be entitled to most of what you want, plus the

cherry on top of your lost profits that you would have made if you had seen the contract through. If you are wrong, however, you are unlikely to get much, if anything. The other side is likely to be entitled to substantial losses that it will almost inevitably incur in getting somebody else in to finish your work. Again, the first place to look is the contract. Does it explain in what circumstances you can terminate, and is it clear that any of those events have, in fact, arisen? If so, are there any formal requirements that the innocent party must comply with before terminating? There are often clauses about how termination notices must be sent and even getting something wrong can turn a valid termination circumstance into a breach of contract nightmare. If the contract does not appear to give you a right to terminate, then there could be a common law right to do so. This arises where the other party’s breach of contract is fundamental, such that it ‘goes to the root’ of the contract. A breach of contract that does not go that far only entitles the wronged party to damages, not to terminate. It is always worth obtaining advice before considering terminating and exploring other options to see if the parties can be re-aligned when they are falling out, and these should also be explored. Poolsure and Spasure – Specialist Insurance For The Wet Leisure Industry With many years experience of the wet leisure industry, Phil Bristow from specialist brokers Nsure, highlights the importance of choosing the correct insurer for peace of mind business cover
S
ometimes you can’t win. Obviously, the customer is always right, but it is slightly difficult to hear “bl***y insurers never pay out” when the very same client received over £1m for a fire claim some years before! That said, some insurers only have themselves to blame for their reputation, seemingly doing everything they can to avoid paying claims, although, in our experience, most insurers are fair, most of the time. But even with decent insurers, you need to play by the rules. To use football as an analogy, arranging insurance could be likened to defending in the penalty area, where it’s best not to give the referee a reason to give a penalty. So, when you arrange insurance, make sure you do it properly and do not give the insurer a reason to refuse to pay a claim. The first thing is to get the basics right and be sure your insurer is clear about your business activities. A number of insurers are not keen on wet leisure risks, and if, as we have seen in the past, a pool installer tries to ‘get round’ this by saying they are ‘builders’ either online or via a broker, they should not be surprised if there are problems if a claim occurs. Building pools is unlikely to be specifically excluded on a policy, but there may well be issues if you did not tell the insurer that you do. By contrast, Nsure, with many years’ experience of the wet leisure industry, has seen the sort of claims that occur in the industry and the issues that can arise. Our Poolsure and Spasure policies have been established to avoid potential problems using an insurer with an understanding
and acceptance of the risks and practices involved in the industry. They will still need to know broadly what you do, but they will not be surprised that you dig holes, may use heat or undertake sub aqua work. As the names suggest, Poolsure is designed for those predominantly involved in pools and Spasure for hot tubs and spas. SPATA and BISHTA members benefit from discounted premiums, and both policies offer a range of wet leisure industry specific extensions, including legionella, theft and damage cover for in-ground pools and displays or stock in the open, wet testing and sub aqua work. Insurance can be notorious for the ‘fine print’, and another essential distinction of the Poolsure and Spasure policies relates to checking a subcontractor’s insurance cover. You will be required to check that they have public liability cover, but only to a limit of £1m, whereas many insurers require subcontractors to have the same level of cover as your own policy. That could be £5m or more, and many subcontractors, particularly small firms, do not have the necessary level of cover. Arranging a policy correctly with the right cover is obviously important, but so is having a broker on your side if a claim occurs. As already mentioned, we have the experience of most eventualities that are likely to happen
The first thing is to get the basics right and be sure your insurer is clear about your business activities. in the wet leisure industry and provide expert guidance during the claims process. Nsure’s customers can also benefit from our expertise in professional Indemnity insurance to dovetail with the Poolsure and Spasure covers. The design and construct professional indemnity insurance market is very restrictive for wet leisure risks at present, but Nsure have access to insurers offering competitive premiums as well as a collateral warranty checking facility. Collateral warranties can impose very onerous conditions that go beyond the scope of the insurance cover available, and it is vital such conditions are identified before you commit to the terms of a contract. Professional indemnity is another area where the fine print can be extremely important, particularly when to notify circumstances that could give rise to a claim, where late notification can lead to a claim being declined and again, Nsure have the experience and expertise of dealing with complex professional indemnity claims. Nsure have also prepared a number of factsheets on insurance related to wet leisure, which can be found on the SPATA and BISHTA websites, in the Members Hub, and a range of factsheets on general insurance topics including flood, business interruption and write off claims that can be found at www.nsureinsurance.co.uk/factsheets There is always something that may look cheaper but using the football analogy again: give away penalties, and your business is likely to suffer. Using experts with specialist industry policies is the best way of defending your business. Nsure Chartered Insurance Brokers 01903 608114 www.nsureinsurance.co.uk

STA POOL PLANT – WATER TESTING
Why Do We Need To Test Our Water? In this article Colin Day from Lovibond® Tintometer – who have recently partnered with STA – answers some common questions on water testing
E
veryone would agree that water is a vital component in any pool and having good water quality is essential. To achieve the desired quality requires both testing and knowledge surrounding water chemistry and the testing processes involved.
WHY DO WE NEED TO TEST OUR WATER? As we all know, water has to be treated to keep it safe. How can we treat the water and know what to add if we do not know the levels? Therefore, water must be tested regularly to ensure: • There is sufficient treatment • The water is safe and comfortable for bathers • Plant and equipment is well maintained • Compliance to guidelines and operation procedures.
WHAT SHOULD WE BE USING TO CARRY OUT THE TESTING? A professional test kit must be used. This can be either a coloured glass-based comparator system or photometer. To ensure readings are correct, the equipment must be spotlessly clean and the correct reagents used. Operators must also follow the instructions and keep photometers calibrated.
WHICH IS BEST FOR ME – A COMPARATOR OR PHOTOMETER? Both systems are acceptable and the final selection is down to end user preference. Photometers will give more precise readings (i.e., down to 0.1mg/l for chlorine) but can drift out of calibration. Glass comparators have fixed colours so cannot go wrong, but they are not suitable for all users (please note that the colours on plastic-based discs will fade over time).
HOW OFTEN DOES A PHOTOMETER NEED CALIBRATING? All photometers should be checked regularly against known standards. With most professional systems, reference kits are available which enable users to check units easily and quickly on site. For continued accurate operation, it is recommended that photometers are factory checked every year.
WHAT PARAMETERS SHOULD WE BE TESTING AND HOW REGULARLY? There are numerous parameters that can be measured in pool water but the five most important are (assuming chlorine-based disinfection): • Chlorine (free and total) – Test frequently throughout the day in accordance with risk assessment and operating procedures (work out combined chlorine) • pH – Must always be tested the same time as chlorine - doing one without the other is pointless • Total Alkalinity – Measure weekly • Calcium Hardness – Measure weekly • TDS – Measure weekly or more often if issues.
WHY SHOULD FREE CHLORINE AND PH ALWAYS BE MEASURED TOGETHER? Not only is pH important for bather comfort and to ensure that the water is not scale forming or corrosive, but it also affects the efficiency of the chlorine. As pH rises, the amount of free chlorine that is available as hypochlorous acid decreases. If levels increase above 7.8 the chlorine efficiency declines so much that pools should consider closing even if free chlorine readings are within range. Therefore, they should always be tested together.
WHAT IS TDS? TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It is the sum of the weight of the soluble compounds in the water. Normal potable drinking water contains around 600mg/l, brackish water 3000mg/l and seawater typically 35000mg/l. In a pool TDS can rise with the addition of chemicals and contamination introduced by bathers. High levels of TDS will impair the performance of the disinfectant and other treatment. As it is ‘dissolved’, TDS cannot be removed by filtration, so can only be controlled by dilution. Ideal TDS is no more than 1000mg/l above the incoming level.
WHAT IS TURBIDITY AND IS IT IMPORTANT IN SWIMMING POOL WATER? Quite simply it is a measurement of the cloudiness of water. High turbidity means the
Not only is pH important for bather comfort and to ensure that the water is not scale forming or corrosive, but it also affects the efficiency of the chlorine” 34 October 2021 SPN 34_SPN_October_21_STA.indd 34
water is cloudy and low turbidity means it will be clear. Turbidity is normally measured in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). In the UK the maximum value allowed at a consumer drinking water outlet is 4NTU and is normally around 0.5NTU. Is it important in pool water? PWTAG say yes and that levels should be no more than 0.5NTU, so the same level as drinking water. Poor turbidity can: • Make the water dangerous, especially if you cannot see the bottom of the pool • Indicate poor water chemistry • Indicate poor circulation or filtration • Prevent underwater cameras functioning correctly. Finally, testing should always be carried out correctly, as you are only measuring very small quantities. Here are some tips on good practice when it comes to water testing to help ensure your results are accurate and correct: • Follow manufacturer’s instructions • Use the correct tablets • Allow reaction time if specified • Keep equipment clean and dry • Wash and dry hands prior to testing • Never handle the tablets • Check and calibrate photometers regularly • Ensure those testing are trained and understand its importance • Carry out testing as quickly as possible after taking the sample • Check sample tubes and discard any dirty or scratched vials. STA offer a regulated four-hour Swimming Pool Water Testing qualification, which is perfect for those responsible for carrying out routine pool water tests. Many lifeguards or pool hirers for example must test pool water as part of their job role, and this qualification gives them the basic information and skills necessary to test swimming pool and spa water competently, whilst providing a basic understanding of the outcomes of those tests. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk STA is pleased to announce a new partnership which will see Lovibond® Tintometer pool water testing equipment and reagents added to the STA Swim-Shop with a 10% discount off list price for STA members. INDUSTRY FOCUS
Swim England Report Warns Of Pool Closures A concerning new report from Swim England warns almost 2,000 pools could be lost forever by the end of the decade unless the Government and local authorities ‘act now’ to replace or refurbish ageing facilities
S
wim England has warned in its new ‘A Decade of Decline: The Future of Swimming Pools in England’ report that there will be a huge reduction in the amount of water space available by 2030, which could threaten the future of aquatic sports in some areas and leave millions shut out of the activities they love. The looming shortage is based on pools which were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s and are coming to the end of their lifespan – while not enough new facilities are being built to replace them. While the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the issue, it is not a direct cause for the dire prediction. However, the report states that ‘if we continue on the current trend, the number of available pools in England will fall by 40% by the end of the decade – down from the current 4,336 to around 2,468’. Swim England is now backing calls for the Government to commit to investing £1 billion into public leisure facilities to help refurbish existing pools – as well as building the new ones needed in the future. Part of this funding should be used so communities can apply for grants to get design and feasibility studies completed – the costs of which can currently be a barrier to pools being built. The recognised national governing body is also calling on local authorities short of water space to include the provision of new pools in any Levelling Up Funding application they make. Jane Nickerson, Swim England Chief Executive, said: “As we reflect on the amazing achievements of our swimmers, divers, artistic swimmers and para-swimmers this summer in Tokyo, it was heartening to hear so many reflect on the important role their local pool played in their sporting journey. “Swimming pools are naturally essential to the future of all our aquatic sports if we are to nurture the next Adam Peaty, Tom Daley, Anna Hopkin or Maisie Summers-Newton. “However, they are so much more than that.”
A Decade of Decline: The Future of Swimming Pools in England Report 2021
A WORRYING REPORT Showing the value of pools, the report highlighted that every £1 spent on community sport and physical activity generates nearly £4 for the English economy and society. It also says that weekly swimming saves the NHS and social care system more than £357m each year. In addition, the reports states that swimming supports: • Physical wellbeing – with swimmers reporting feeling 12 years younger than non-swimmers • Mental wellbeing – 1.4 million adults feel swimming has significantly reduced their anxiety or depression • Individual development – with women and girls reporting that swimming more than doubled their levels of self confidence • Social and community development – swimmers have been found to be more socially connected and to have more friends than non-swimmers • Volunteering – swimmers are 26.1% more likely to volunteer. Jane continued: “Pools are hubs of the local community, helping people of all ages to lead healthier, happier lives and saving the NHS hundreds of millions of pounds each year. “They are also the places where millions

learn a skill that could one day save their life – or someone else’s. “Without adequate investment into the new pools this country needs, we are forecasting a huge decline in the available water space by the end of the decade, threatening the future of our sports, leaving millions shut out of the activities they love and widening health inequities. “The time to act is now.” The report highlights that almost a quarter (23%) of local authorities in England have a deficit of at least one average-sized swimming pool. Swim England is also asking local authorities to conduct an analysis of its pool stock to understand if it has the right pools in the right place to meet the needs of the community. The governing body has a dedicated facilities team, which provides expert guidance on new and refurbished pool designs and facility management. Jane added: “This is a very worrying report which could impact on millions of people across the country. “We hope the Government and local authorities will take note and work with us to prevent these concerning predictions from becoming a reality.” A Decade of Decline: The Future of Swimming Pools in England is available to download as a PDF direct from the Swim England website. COMPANY FOCUS
Sunbeach Spas Go From Strength To Strength With a new collaboration providing extended reach around the UK and an innovative app that streamlines all stages of the sales process, Sunbeach Spas have a vision that is sure to please both customers and dealers alike
M
ansfield’s Sunbeach Spas recently confirmed a collaboration with SpaCare UK to expand their distribution network significantly, with the Scunthorpe-based company serving as Sunbeach’s first external distribution centre. It’s no coincidence that this announcement comes with the creation of SpaCare’s brand new showroom, which at 5,000 sq. ft., is one of the largest of its type in the UK. The showroom features over 40 hot tubs on display and a private wet test room for the ultimate hot tub shopping experience. With plans for a further distribution centre in the south of the country already in the works, Sunbeach Spas, who are also the exclusive UK distributor of the best-selling Oasis Spas brand, are going from strength to strength with their award-winning spas and service receiving plaudits from their peers. Speaking about the move, company director Wayne Green said: “We’re growing massively, both as a company and a brand. Rather than simply expand here in Mansfield, we felt it more sensible to space ourselves out; to keep stock and skilled staff at key points around the country to give our dealers a more localised experience. With [SpaCare UK’s] Craig’s passion and vision, this was one of our easier decisions this year!” One of the more interesting outcomes of this collaboration has been the development of a mobile CMS web app, available exclusively to Sunbeach Spas and Oasis Spas dealerships. The app, which has been designed to function on any platform from smartphones to desktop PCs, is set to become the beating heart of the Sunbeach dealership system, and will be a significant shift in how many dealers might be used to operating. It has been built from scratch entirely to serve the needs of spa dealerships and permits suppliers, dealers, sales teams, engineers and customers alike to access information about each spa through its entire life cycle in the sleekest, most stressfree way possible. Wayne explained: “Everything you need to know about each hot tub is available from the app. Need to order a spa for a customer? Your sales team can check live stock and place the order right there on their phones. Waiting for new stock to come in? The app tracks the progress of the shipment, showing you just where it is in the process, and when you can expect it to be available. Or maybe your
38 October 2021 SPN 38_SPN_October+2021_Sunbeach_Spas.indd 38
customer is expecting a delivery – the app tracks on a map where the delivery team are in the UK. It’s complete transparency and simplicity.” The premise is simple enough – for every process, every transaction and for everything relating to every spa a dealer sells, everything needed will be available at their fingertips via the app. The system is built on the idea of ‘live data’ – whether it be warehouse stock levels or the spa’s location – everything is kept totally up-to-date across all dealerships. Alongside supply chain and order management, the system boasts a wide range of features including built in text messaging to contact customers and confirm deliveries; information and checklists for the installation or service teams, along with the ability to report missing items or other issues; tracking of the spa’s service history and any warranty-related issues; and a dashboard to show important metrics on sales and other reporting tools. The end customer too will be able to use a version of the app to view guides and manuals specific to their own spa, receive reminders and arrange services, and to order consumables safe in the knowledge that they are compatible with their hot tub. And this is just the start – with more
functionality for the app already in the pipeline, Sunbeach Spas and SpaCare UK are really embracing how the technology carried with us everyday can be leveraged to simplify and streamline their dealership’s workload. In order to extend the company’s reach yet further, they have put together a Demonstration Trailer – a branded, walk-in trailer containing one each of the Sunbeach and Oasis spa ranges – designed to showcase the best of each brand in a mobile form. Wayne elaborated: “The trailer means that, if you’re a showroom manager who’s considering joining the Sunbeach family or just to see what our brands are all about, there’s no need to take staff away from your showroom or even close up for the day – we can come to you.” Both Sunbeach Spas and SpaCare UK are actively recruiting new dealerships. HIGH-END HOT TUBS
Hot Tubs That Provide A Premium Experience There’s no stopping hot tubs and as with many lifestyle products, that applies to the premium end of the market too. Promising a setting which will provide users with the ultimate hot tub for relaxation, recuperation and more, the luxury end of the market is a key and lucrative sector for both manufacturers and retailers. Featuring models retailing over the key £10,000 mark and which boast the sector’s latest innovations and technology, in this issue we look at some of the high-end hot tubs which are tempting buyers this year By Jon Wadeson
T
he premium end of the hot tub sector has always been a tough battleground for both retailers and manufacturers, especially with so many cheaper models and brands on the market. However the last year and a half or so has been somewhat different. Continuing uncertainty throughout 2021 due to the pandemic, combined with some decent, albeit not amazing weather, plus mainstream media coverage and supply issues… add it all up and it meant the demand for hot tubs across all price ranges, has still been high. For the more affluent in the UK, money saved from not going on luxury summer holidays has often meant some form of retail therapy has been hard to resist. For numerous others where budget still is a factor, it seems that they have come round to the idea that now is the time to enjoy the finer things in life from the comfort of their own home, and hot tubs are increasingly falling into that ‘finer things’ category. Range-topping hot tub models are a chance to fully showcase a brand’s design capabilities, imagination, quality and much more to potential customers. In short, they’re a brand’s flag-bearers – which makes them important for reputations as they will have a bearing on a customers’ perception of cheaper models within ranges too. After all, not everyone will commit to the ultimate tub experience, especially if they are new to the experience, so impressions, rightly or wrongly, count. With budgets often well into fivefigure territory for these models, any customer looking to invest in this sector quite rightly demands the latest features and innovations combined with a sense of style and of course exclusivity. After all, bragging rights and social media pictures are likely to follow! So with a lot to live up to, and with premium products very much still in demand, we take a look at just some of the luxury models that are available.

his spectacular residential pool demonstrates the prodigious talent of Wearside-based pool contractor, Whitewaters, in creating spectacular, technically-advanced swimming pools and the lengths it goes to, to achieve the desired result. Designed for some serious swimming, Certikin takes a bow in being the supplier of the project’s filtration, environmental control and auto chemical dosing system. This is no ordinary pool. Complex, both in build and operation, this 25m x 5m residential training pool is fitted with a sophisticated lap pacer system. Whitewaters’ Managing Director, Mick Guthrie, explained: “The client is an avid swimmer and required a number of competition-style features. Our challenge was to incorporate these

features without compromising the general aesthetics of this high specification property. I am satisfied we achieved it and we certainly have a very happy customer. The project displays excellence in both aesthetic design and technical complexity and we welcomed the part that Certikin’s products and technical expertise played in it.” As Theodore Roosevelt once said: “Nothing worth having comes easy” and so this pool proved. What should have been a nine month build, turned into 18 months due to difficult site conditions and the delays wrought by COVID-19. Every detail of the project was meticulously researched and executed. A single storey contemporary hilltop home, a large-scale extension was added to form the pool hall which, when you enter, you are bowled over by its striking 35m feature wall adorned with 3m slabs of Corten-effect porcelain. Porcelain is also used in the pool’s contrasting black lane markers and turning crosses. Bespoke stainless-steel channels are recessed into the pool’s lane markers to carry LED light strips which allow pace, stroke and tempo to be set at the poolside via a smartphone app. This permanent built-in solution was designed and installed by the Whitewaters team using technology sourced from the US. The starter blocks are another bespoke feature, again manufactured from stainless steel inset with porcelain to match the pool surround. Less obvious, but nonetheless integral to the pool’s performance, is its environmental control system, and for this, Whitewaters turned to Certikin to supply a Calorex Delta 12. full control of the pool’s indoor environment and pool water heating. At the opposite end of the hall, Whitewaters constructed a small leisure pool featuring an inset sunken spa complete with bench seats, massage jets, a lounger with twin air strips and a shallow children’s play area. Elsewhere in the pool hall is a hot yoga room, with large floor-toceiling frameless glass panels, lined with Abodo Vulcan timber with benches to match, concealed LED strip lights, and a 24kW exposed stone feature stove. Fundamental to the overall beauty of both pools is Certikin’s automatic dosing system which provides a reliable source of pristine clear water combined with minimum maintenance. Mick added: “We used two Certidos WCP dosing systems, one for each pool. We use these on the majority of our high-end projects as we know it will do everything we need at a reasonable cost but, and more importantly, in the event of there ever being a problem we know we can always rely on Certikin and its excellent service record to sort it out. It’s called buying peace of mind.” Certikin’s exclusive Vision bobbin wound domestic filters are bestsellers in their sector so it’s no surprise that this plantroom features three. The filter offers unrivalled features such as a large 10-inch wide clear lid making sand changes quicker and easier and a dual dump port arrangement means a small outer cap can be removed for drainage and a larger secondary cap assists with the removal of the media. The Top Mount Vision is the only one of its kind to feature a clear valve mounting ring, allowing full view of the filter in operation whilst the pump is running.

SHOW PREVIEWS
Show Season Returns! With the domestic and international show season resuming after closures due to the pandemic, in this issue, we have show previews for three industry related exhibitions – aquanale in Cologne, Piscina & Wellness Barcelona and the Holiday Park & Resort Innovation show at Birmingham’s NEC By Jon Wadeson
AQUANALE 2021: ALL SET FOR THE RE-START Taking place from 26 to 29 October, aquanale, the International Trade Fair is returning to Cologne and is all set to go. As in previous years, aquanale will be co-located with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities. As one of the leading international trade fairs for the industry, it will play a key role in successfully relaunching the market, and is a must for anyone wanting to achieve success in the pool, sauna, wellness and ambience sectors. Only in Cologne do all industry players get a comprehensive overview of what’s new: the latest technologies, product innovations, process optimisations and visionary planning. The #B-Safe4Business hygiene concept and the new 3-G concept, CH3CK, which requires all attendees to be fully vaccinated, or have recovered from an infection within the last six months (but at least 28 days ago), or test negative for COVID, will ensure that all participants are completely safe. Attendees can find useful information and assistance for planning their travel to Cologne on the aquanale website. Around 180 companies from 25 countries will be exhibiting at aquanale, which this year will cover approximately 24,000 sqm in Halls 7 and 8 of the Cologne trade fair grounds. Fifty eight per cent of the exhibitors are from abroad. The strongest international presences come from France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Turkey, the Czech Republic, UK, Austria and Switzerland. The exhibiting companies will be showcasing every aspect of the latest products and designs for modern, sustainable

and innovative construction of pools and spa and wellness facilities. A trade fair is the ideal communication platform to give all market players an excellent and comprehensive overview of new technologies, smart concepts and product innovations. It’s also the only context in which it’s possible to have discussions and dialogue that are intensive enough to ultimately generate business and new leads. This is reflected in the strong presence of market-leading companies, which take vital inspiration from aquanale. Companies that will be represented at the event in Cologne include Fluidra, Riviera Pool, Speck Pumpen, Grando, Hugo Lahme, WDT, Fluvo Schmalenberger, Chemoform, Dinotec, Pentair, Hayward, Bünger & Frese, Maytronics, B&B Pool Systeme, Niveko, Alukov, Whirlcare Industries, Diamant Unionpool, Passion, Whitewater, BeWell Canada and Superior Wellness. All aspects of the public and private pool, wellness, sauna and spa sectors are now comprehensively represented at aquanale, on one platform and in six, clearly defined themed worlds. This is where German and international trade fair visitors from specialised pool construction companies, local authorities, water parks, architects and planning offices, hotels, day spas, gyms, sanitary, heating and air-conditioning companies as well as premium private visitors can convince themselves of the comprehensive and innovative spectrum of products, conveniently and with short walking distances. In addition, this year’s specialised event programme is guaranteed to provide international trade visitors and experts with added value and an edge in industry
knowledge once more. The connection between the private and public pool segments is to be the International Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum once again, which will take place for the ninth time in Cologne. On all four days of the trade fair the bsw (Association of Swimming Pools & Wellness e.V.) as aquanale’s conceptual partner will offer an informative and topical specialised programme in collaboration with IAKS (the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities). The programme is aimed at the target group of public pool operators but will also address technical and trending topics for pool construction companies, hoteliers, planners and architects. The diverse topics range from ‘Sustainability and digitalisation: innovation for public pools’ and ‘Examples of best practice from the IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Prizes 2021’ to ‘Development of healthier and more sustainable pools’ and ‘Pandemic plan / re-opening public swimming pools safely’. The BDS (German Federal Association of Swimming Pool Professionals) will also be represented once again in the ‘Training/ Advanced Training/Continuing Professional Development’ section of the programme. In Hall 8, the European Waterpark Association (EWA) – the quality association for European leisure pools and thermal baths – will be presenting its EWA Village in collaboration with Koelnmesse GmbH, and showcasing the strengths of its member companies. Among those present will be Aquarena, Roigk, Beco Beermann Plettenberg, Klafs, Lutz-Jesco and other supporting members of the EWA. The focus this year is on dialogue with and among industry members, with the primary aim of discussing relevant issues for operators of leisure pools, water parks and public pools, and advancing ground-breaking concepts. The award ceremony for the winners of the EUSA AWARDS 2020 will also be held at aquanale 2021 to celebrate the best looking private outdoor and indoor pools, hot tubs, spas and pools with enclosures and covers. The awards have been presented every year since 2013 by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) in cooperation with the bsw (German Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness) and other European swimming pool associations. The award ceremony, which will be hosted by Bert Granderath, President of

Organised by Fira de Barcelona, these two trade shows have joined forces to provide greater added value to their offer on a platform providing a service to both the construction and swimming pool and wellness industries. Both events will be held in a hybrid format, with a face-to-face fair complemented by a virtual one, in an initiative that demonstrates Fira de Barcelona’s desire to help reactivate the economy. With this joint event, BBConstrumat and Piscina & Wellness Barcelona will be able to increase the number of business opportunities that can be established at the shows by reaching a wider potential professional audience, ranging from constructors and installers to managers of hotels, sports facilities, campsites and water parks, as well as architects, interior designers, landscapers and engineers. This year Piscina & Wellness Barcelona is launching a unique innovation programme with which it aims to revitalise and reveal new market solutions from the perspective and experience of the demand sectors and users of aquatic facilities. Thus, the trade fair will create spaces for communication, recognition and training open to professionals and companies where innovation will be addressed as a response to the uses of swimming pools linked to wellness, health and the community. Also new for 2021 is ‘The Outdoor Living Concept’, which will include a specific area for exhibitor companies who in turn will provide materials, products and services for the recreation of an outdoor living space, activity and demonstration areas and a seminar and conference room.

An Effective Addition To Garden-based Pools
Providing all year round swimming, regardless of the unpredictable UK weather, pool enclosures reduce both maintenance and running costs for both commercial and domestic owners, plus they offer built-in safety too. There’s no doubt that choosing an enclosure is an investment, but having one means owners can maximise the full potential of their swimming pool. From the big to the small and to suit any size and shape of pool, we take a look at the options that are available to provide under cover swimming across the UK By Jon Wadeson
I
f ever there was a right time to invest in an enclosure for a garden-based swimming pool, then the last 18 months have to have been just about perfect. With this year being even more so. With staycations becoming the increasingly normal and sensible thing to do, at least in the short term, pool owners in both residential and commercial sectors are opting for effective cover-ups that mean swimming and pool-based outdoor leisure time can continue way past the normal seasonal shut down. Instead of flying off to exotic locations, families are still looking to relax closer to home and where better to do this than around their own pool or at their holiday park facility. There is a wide selection of fabulous enclosures that come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit the majority of site requirements and the most particular of customers too. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the glazed cover-up solutions that are available.

Their enclosures are manufactured to any length, width or height
and they offer a full choice of 180 colours to suit every requirement. An EasyGlide pool building can raise the water temperature of a covered pool by up to 12°C. The Swimex Galaxy fixed pool enclosures are great value for money and can be designed to be attached to a house or building, either at the end or on the side of the enclosure, allowing owners and users to walk straight into an all-weather pool area. They have been designed so that all the side walls can be lifted from the floor to a height of 2.1 metres allowing access to the pool from any point at both sides, giving the feeling of an outdoor pool but with a translucent roof above. Inside there is a minimum 2m walking height along the sides approx. 0.5m in from the sides.
FROM ASSEMBLY TO INSTALLATION – ALUKOV PROVIDES THE TOTAL SERVICE As UK weather is not always favourable, and over the last 18 or so months and with the pandemic meaning many pool owners are reluctant to travel, the aim of any enclosure is to extend the swimming season plus

This means that not only is the installation itself incredibly fast – half a day to one day, depending on size – it is also very clean. Alukov UK is based in Surrey and covers the whole of the country. As an extension of the factory in the Czech Republic, customers are talking directly to enclosure experts. Alukov are known as innovators within the sector and are constantly developing their products. Providing new shapes and models, using the best possible materials, employing fantastic craftsmen and providing a great, customer orientated approach are all part of the Alukov experience.

CASE STUDY: AQUACOMET’S THE SOLUTION FOR DEVON POOL OWNER For this Tiverton pool owner, who was looking to get the most out of the family’s new swimming pool, installing an Aquacomet enclosure from Certikin, with all its flexible options, was a no-brainer. Somerset based pool builders, Purepools were given the brief to create a good family-sized indoor pool at a farm overlooking the stunning Lowman valley. Located on the hillside, it affords breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside but the downside is its exposure to the elements. Installing an enclosure to maximise the pool’s use was a decision made at the outset. Manager of Purepools, Stewart Skinner said: “The site is subject to strong winds so swimming without some sort of enclosure would, on most days, be unpleasant. I had no hesitation in recommending Certikin’s Aquacomet enclosures as I have fitted them in the past using their team of installers and it has been a very straightforward process. They look good, are robust and are highly versatile. “For this site, I chose a lean-to telescopic enclosure which opens from the middle. The garage was converted to make a changing room which the pool adjoins.” Delighted with the result, the owner says: “My two teenage boys enjoy hours of fun in the pool and it is a good focus for family entertaining. Thanks to the enclosure, the pool season is greatly extended and we could, if we want, swim all year.”

Swimming Pool Enclosure Benefits
• A pool enclosure can be a highly worthwhile investment to extend the season; keeping it covered and warm well into the winter and keeping out leaves and snow. • The polycarbonate material used for most enclosures also helps to protect swimmers from harmful UV rays in the height of summer, as well as sheltering from any unwanted insects and wildlife. • An enclosure decreases the amount of chemicals that are required to look after the water. • Additionally, cost savings can be made with the addition of a pool enclosure; they shelter the water meaning less water evaporation and with a reduction in heat loss, owners will see utility bills are reduced. • Many of the models come with secure locking systems, making it almost impossible for children to be in the pool unattended. Slips and falls can also be reduced by keeping the surrounding ground covered from ice and rain. • Great for extending the home and creating an additional living space.

EXTENDING OUTDOORS LEISURE – AN ALL-EMBRACING RANGE The team behind Salisbury-based Extending Outdoors Leisure have been installing retractable swimming pool enclosures for more than 25 years. The company design, supply and fit made to measure swimming pool enclosures anywhere in the UK. Alternatively, they offer standard and supply only pool enclosures as well as a DIY option enabling end users and owners to save on installation costs. The company offer two brands meaning the product range is extensive with exclusive products from Polish company Aluna and French brand Azenco. The buildings can be fixed or retractable are made to measure and can be single or double glazed. Commercially they offer far more insulated buildings whether fixed or retractable than others. This is particularly true of schools as some local authorities decline plastic swimming pool enclosures due to their cost to maintain a suitable environment all year as those products do not offer much heat insulation and costs may be excessive to heat in the colder periods if used all year. Up to a ten-year warranty is offered on the build and installation, plus there is a 15-year warranty on the glazing. There are other products available for spas and hot tubs, retractable garden rooms, retractable buildings for restaurant, hotel and other concerns who seek a quick economical extension to cover a patio area, outside eating area, reception area etc. There is also the option to not only replace Certikin’s Endless Summer Enclosure is fixed along its length allowing all windows and wall sections to slide up into its roof

Certikin have a huge range of enclosures, which are suitable for any pool size or shape and will fit into most environments due to the colour options and styles that are on offer. Everything is supplied in a box together with an assembly manual making them a fast and cost-effective way

The rigid and durable structure offers elegant and graceful aesthetics while still retaining key safety and protective features. Each enclosure comes equipped with a double wall polycarbonate roof, while the side doors and wall endings of the pool enclosure are constructed from solid, transparent polycarbonate panels. For those who desire the least intrusive pool enclosure possible, the Horizontal enclosure combines an ultra-low telescopic design with durable construction. COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS
Swimming On The Spot Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane from Certikin generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow
When it comes to increasing the functionality of smaller pool spaces, countercurrent systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind the success of swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Affordable and easy to install, they deliver a more complete experience and in this issue, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems By Jon Wadeson
P
ools of all shapes and sizes have become a popular and welcome addition to many homes during the pandemic, but there’s a number of reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity. Perhaps there is a restriction on space or budget. There may also be aesthetic reasons why a large pool just won’t work within a certain setting. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only suitable option but whilst they can be a lot of fun, they can also just seem to lack that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ – and often, it’s the ability to enjoy a good old-fashioned and proper uninterrupted swim. For the owners of many pools, the solution is a counter-current system – a product which enhances the usability of smaller installations, adds some much-needed wow factor and somewhat levels the playing field against their much bigger rivals. In a number of ways, it could easily be argued that they actually surpass them. Once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited pool fun, swim for as long as a user likes, plus their introduction can often provide hydrotherapy options too. With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for not exercising in smaller pools or maximising their full potential, and we take a closer look at some of the counter-current options that are available.
ENJOY LIFE IN THE FASTLANE WITH CERTIKIN Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, Certikin have counter-current options to suit all levels of swimming needs.

The Fastlane Pro from Endless Pools sits at the top end of the Certikin range and is a product which effectively turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it is also possible to add Fit@Home which lets the customer control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device, meaning that you can programme and repeat advanced, multispeed ‘interval’ workouts. What sets this counter-current apart is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering a fast, smooth swim current up to a 1:14/100m pace (a necessity for any serious swimmer). It’s suitable for almost any pool – free Fit@Home lets customers control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device
form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets users swim for as long as they like without turning. Certikin also supplies its own branded entry-level counter-current system – an affordable option designed for small private pools. It is equipped with a 3hp pump to create an adjustable counter-stream of water. The directional inlet allows a 15° inclination in any direction and also features an adjustable air/water mixer for a relaxing bubble massage effect.
GOLDEN COAST HELP SWIMMERS TRAIN HARDER As a leading wet leisure distributor, Golden Coast offers one of the widest ranges of counter-current units on the market today. For those looking to up their training, they provide athlete-level systems like EVAstream, from Dutch manufacturer EVA Optic – a counter-current unit that delivers a powerful jet of water to swim against to help build strength and conditioning. “EVAstream was designed to challenge swimming ability,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “It can be used to improve swimming technique and really enhances a physical fitness regime.” Compact yet powerful, EVAstream has a flow rate of 8.5 m/s (> 30 km/h) and has the option of using pre-programmed training modes – providing a challenging workout even for professional swimmers. The flow of water can be adjusted between 10% and 100%, so EVAstream can also

be used for lower-level activity such as rehabilitation, or just to aid relaxation when unwinding in the pool. EVAstream is extremely energy efficient and fits to a standard 16A 230V connection, with a consumption of just 2.2kW. It has been extensively tested to ensure it meets the most stringent safety standards, including DIN EN16582-1/2/3, EN16713-2, EN13451-1/3. EVAstream is available as a recessed model for new pool builds, or as a surface-mounted model for retrofitting onto existing pools. Golden Coast also offers the BADUJET Turbo Pro, which produces a soft, even flow of water for a more natural swimming experience. For more professional workouts, the stream of water can be regulated up to 350m3/hr at 1.8-4.1 m/sec, but even with the higher output and performance, remains extremely quiet. The Turbo Pro is available in two different designs, and as there is no drive shaft or shaft seal, wear is very low.

a counter-current system don’t have to be deprived of the pleasure thanks to the TREVI and TREVI LUX surface-mounted systems! Just fit them on the edge of the pool and plunge into fun. With a range that is constantly being enhanced, a wide selection of UWE’s countercurrent products are available through experienced specialists Jetstream UK who also carry spares to support the systems (including legacy units back to the 1970s) and distributor SCP.
German manufacturer UWE invented the counter-current system in 1967 and the creation of the company’s JetStream countercurrent systems has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. By regulating the current, even small pools can become really exciting – and that goes for trained athletes as well. With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of needs. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA counter-current system. BINDER’S TURBINE COUNTERIt was designed with ambitious athletes CURRENT SYSTEMS FROM OCEA in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT Ocea UK exclusively supply the increasingly technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful popular range of turbine counter-current flow just below the water’s surface – right at systems from German manufacturer Binder. chest and shoulder height, right where an The built-in Hydrostar option offers a athlete needs resistance. Depending on the unique 24V turbine-driven fully submerged version, the pressure-sensitive single-button counter flow system which brings a natural PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75 m3/h to 225 m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA. For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, popular choices are the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes, and the control panel – all the components are preassembled and it takes minimum effort to install, but gives maximum pleasure. CASE STUDY FASTLANE IS PERFECT SOLUTION FOR ENERGETIC FAMILY’S POOL When space is limited, the Fastlane from Certikin could be a solution. That was the answer provided by West Midlands Swimming Pools when an energetic family contacted them for a swimming solution,

as Kay Cunningham from the Staffordshire based company explained: “We were approached by a family who were looking at installing a pool largely for exercise and sports purposes. They had previously tried out an Endless Pool and although they found the counter-current unit exactly what they wanted, they felt the off-the-shelf pool was too shallow for their purposes and didn’t have quite the finish they were looking for. The solution was to design a bespoke pool for them with the addition of a Fastlane counter current unit.” An existing building, which was being used
as a home office, lent itself perfectly to accommodate a 5m x 2.5m Faslaneequipped pool with a constant depth of 1.6m and adequate deck space. The Fastlane unit from Certikin is the Rolls Royce of counter-current units and is designed for athletes and serious swimmers as well as lesser mortals wishing to get the most out of their swimming pool. Having the benefit of remote control, the speed can be altered, with an optional LED display allowing monitoring of swimmers’ progress and speeds. After completion, Kay said: “The customer was absolutely delighted with how the pool fits into the space and highly rates the Fastlane’s performance.” Swimming Pools Midlands 01543 677476 www.westmids-pools.co.uk

COUNTER-CURRENT SYSTEMS swimming experience to any home pool. The patented technology has already received numerous prestigious awards, including a Golden Wave Award, a German Brand Award and a Plus X Award. As opposed to conventional counter flow systems, HydroStar generates a wide water flow which carries the body in the water similar to a natural river current, without splashing. Unlike pump-operated swim systems, there is no concentrated jet that causes unpleasant concentrated strain on the head or shoulders. The wide and regular overand undercurrent of the HydroStar engulfs the entire body. Hydrostar has a range of turbines that offer a flow capacity for all swimmers. Six standard performance levels are on offer with flow rates ranging from 160 to 550m3 per hour plus for particularly ambitious swimmers, there are two special sizes with flow rates of 600 and 1200m3/h. Flow velocities are fully adjustable between 1 – 3.2 m/s. As the units are turbine driven, a maintenance free, all-in-one flush fitting kit is offered which are available for all types of pool construction from concrete tiled, liner to panel or fibreglass construction. For existing pools, there’s the modernlooking EasyStar hanging system. Available in grey and white and, just like the permanently integrated version, the retrofit system is offered with the six standard performance levels and has all the benefits of a fullyfledged HydroStar system. Ocea partnership with Binder has grown over recent years leading to it becoming one of the most popular high spec countercurrent systems available. With a good mix of German engineering combined with UK based sales and service backup, the HydroStar and EasyStar products are perfect for all ranges of training whether it’s for health, fitness or elite swimmers.
THROUGH- AND OVER-THE-WALL UNITS FROM PLASTICA The X-Stream counter-current unit, made with a stainless-steel niche and grab rail, is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit. It’s easy to install, gives a neater finish and is more powerful than overthe-wall alternatives. There are two options for the X-Stream. The single kit comes with a Nardoself pump and produces 60m3/h output. Alternatively, the X-Stream duo, which comes with two of the Espa wiper pumps and gives an impressive 100m3/h output. Each X-Stream kit option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The

A counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited pool fun, swim for as long as a user likes, plus their introduction can often provide hydrotherapy options too” duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay between them. The X-Stream is especially suited for the range of wooden pools manufactured by Plastica. It uses pneumatic on/off switches, accessible from the pool to keep any electrics away from the bather and also features directional nozzles for fine adjustment of the flow. Perfect for a small size pool where space is limited, Plastica also sell the Counter-current Jet with white LED Light Kit which is ideal for fitness training, underwater massage and endless no-lap swimming. The Jet can be used as a single or double jet system with one or two pumps. The counter-current face plate is fitted with a white LED light, along with the On/Off light switch for ease of access while in the water. The unit is made
from a durable ABS structure, and is suitable for installation in concrete and liner pools. If an over-the-wall unit is needed, new to Plastica’s BADU® Jet range this year is the Stella, which has two swivelling nozzles. This model comes with White or RGB LED colour changing ambient lighting for night exercise or an atmospheric and relaxing swim. It joins the existing Perla or Riva units and all three can be used as a simple retro-fit in any swimming pool.

OPINION
‘No Need To Panic As Stocks Run Low’ In this latest issue, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams asks: “What has happened to the global supply chain and how is it affecting our industry?”
W
hen you read the headline to this article the word that sticks out is ‘panic’ and like Clive Dunn warbling ‘Don’t panic Mr Mainwaring’ in ‘Dad’s Army’, the very thing it exhorts you to do is to panic. The mere thought of a shortage of something sends people into a scarcity mindset where they stampede towards the biggest pile of – for instance, loo rolls – and start buying, whether they need them or not. For example, on 23 September the country was in a fairly normal state for these times with the newspaper front covers predominantly concerned with Boris and his desire to avoid another lockdown over the winter. On 24 September The Sun’s front cover had a picture of a petrol pump nozzle and the headline, ‘WE’RE RUNNING ON EMPTY’ simply because half a dozen BP forecourts in Wales were closed due to a delivery issue. We all know what happened next.
into the supply chain. For now, they are stuck in the wrong place. Another container ship that became stuck in the wrong place was the Ever Given, one of the world’s largest container vessels that managed to run aground in the Suez canal blocking the shortcut for ships sailing from Asia to Europe. That one incident disrupted the 12% of global trade that normally passes through the canal each day.
THE LOGIC OF LOGISTICS
AND SOMETIMES THE CRISIS IS REAL The fuel crisis was driven by a lack of drivers rather than a lack of fuel and some people blame Brexit for a shortage of HGV drivers, but the story is more complicated than that. The pandemic shut down all HGV training and so there were no new drivers to step into the cabs. The average age of a long distance lorry driver is 55 and many of them took early retirement. The pandemic also affected the DVLA in Swansea where there are thousands – yes, thousands – of new HGV licenses waiting to be sent out. We started to notice the strain on the courier companies that Golden Coast use back in May and even though we enlarged our delivery fleet, next day delivery became something that we couldn’t always offer.
THE ICE WE SKATE ON IS GETTING PRETTY THIN The supply chain is about manufacture as much as delivery. Towards the back end of 2020, spa steps began to be difficult to source and the reason turned out to be climate change. In February a freak weather event buried
Texas in an ice storm and caused a handful of chemical plants to shut down including several polymer plants. A shortage of polymer soon triggered a global plastic shortage. No plastic; no spa steps. Fortunately, we had increased our warehouse space and built up stock levels to help cover peaks and troughs in supply and demand but it is startling how a single event in a foreign country can have such an impact.
ALL AT SEA Ninety per cent of the world’s goods travel by container ship. Two years ago a container cost about $4,000. Today the price is closer to $18,000 – that’s if you can find one – although we do know where quite a lot of them are. Moored off the western seaboard of the United States are hundreds of container ships waiting to get into port. Labour shortages caused by COVID are keeping them out at sea, unable to dock and unload. Those containers can’t be emptied and put back
The global economy and its hugely complicated interwoven supply chain looked to be robust and reliable and we had made a habit of embracing ‘just in time’ delivery” 72 October 2021 SPN 76_SPN_October_2021_Opinion.indd 72
Moving stuff from A to B has become more complicated in order to shave costs and increase margins. Globalisation means that production of essential parts and products has been centralised in just a few manufacturing bases. All our eggs are in the one basket and it very often isn’t even our basket. The vast majority of semiconductor chips, which go in everything from saunas and spas to cars and computers, are made in China or Taiwan. A shortage of these chips has led auto manufacturers to cut production across the globe and, as wet leisure products become more and more technically advanced, it is certain to impact our industry too.
SUPPLY AND DEMAND The global economy and its hugely complicated interwoven supply chain looked to be robust and reliable and we had made a habit of embracing ‘just in time’ delivery. We thought we were looking at a calm and majestic swan gliding serenely across the water; we didn’t see the little legs paddling frantically below the surface. Things are bound to settle down but it might also be foolish to think we will go back to exactly how we were. For now it’s sensible to think ahead about what you might need and place your order in good time. You might think of increasing your stock levels so you have a bit of a cushion to protect yourself from shortages. You should build a bit of extra time into any installation or construction schedule; if you discover you don’t need it then that’s even better. And just keep on reminding yourself, whatever you do, don’t panic! Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
