On that theme, inside this latest issue of SPN, we take a look at the returning Piscine Global Europe in Lyon – a show which was, prior to COVID, the most important wet leisure event for all sectors across the industry and one which will be pulling out all the stops to pick up from where it left off in 2018.

Talking of sectors, we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers stunning bespoke and durable solutions for both high-end domestic and commercial markets alike.

As I drove down the motorway recently, looking at the trees across the surrounding countryside whose leaves are now turning an autumnal mix of golds, browns and reds, it struck me just how rapidly our record summer has moved on. My central heating system, which has lay dormant for months now, has also kicked back in! It’s seems crazy just how quickly time flies and how many changes have taken place around the world since last year’s October issue.

Sadly, the bearing those changes have had on our lives have not been welcomed as most of the developments have been of a negative nature.

For example, twelve months ago, I spoke about supply chain issues and the challenges of inflation. A year on, and I doubt anyone could have predicted quite how bad things would be, particularly when it comes to rising prices. Certainly nobody had the current situation in Ukraine unfolding, and in doing so, adding massively to existing challenges across the board.

How the wet leisure industry responds to these challenging and changing times remains to be seen, but it’s clear that tougher times appear to lay ahead for all, regardless of sector, at least in the short term. Which is a real shame as it felt that COVID had really taken a back seat and a sense of normality – if there ever was such a thing – was resuming.

So, with the summer sadly behind us, autumn has most definitely arrived. And that has traditionally heralded the start of show season too, which in turn usually means new product launches and a chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed. I suspect

Continuing on the subject of high-end, hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands.

We’ve also an in depth look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing costs and minimising the effort involved in pool ownership. Heatstar Replace Old Heat Recovery System Using A Bespoke Approach

Located in the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, West Wight Sports & Community Centre, with its main and learner pools, has long been an integral part of the local community.

At the end of last year, a decision was made by the centre to replace the existing environmental control system, a Heatstar Taurus 120 that was installed over 20 years ago. Although the old Taurus system was still working, it was relying solely on fresh air exchange with no method of heat recovery and the ongoing running costs and maintenance had become a cost burden to the centre.

The replacement unit chosen for the wet leisure facilities was a Heatstar Phoenix E 12000 Super+ – a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system that offers dual heat recovery methods for expelled pool room air. It represents the optimum and uncompromised environmental control solution for the highest specification indoor swimming pools and encompasses all the available energy saving technologies such as EC fans, a high efficiency plate recuperator and dehumidifying heat pump to be fully compliant with the latest building control regulations.

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has been warned ‘crucial’ swimming pools could be forced to close in the coming months if they don’t receive financial help to cover soaring energy costs.

Swim England Chief Executive Jane Nickerson has written to Ms Truss after she won the vote to be the next Conservative leader and replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

In her letter, Jane stated the ‘urgent situation’ has put pools and leisure centres under ‘real threat’ on the back of a challenging time for the sector following the coronavirus pandemic.

Jane wrote: “Swimming pools are crucial to the health and wellbeing of the nation but urgently need government support to survive

£13.1M SHROPSHIRE POOL GETS APPROVAL

Plans for a new multi-million pound swimming pool and fitness centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire whichhave been formally approved. The new centre will be built on the site of the old pool at Whitchurch has been closed since March 2020. The new facility will feature a six-lane, 25m pool with a movable floor, a fitness suite, function rooms and café.

The project had initially been expected to cost between £7m and £8m, but had risen to more than £13m – partly due to inflation and increased construction costs.

It is hoped that the building work will start in 2024 and be finished the following year.

Chlorine Gas Prevention Through Detection

Chlorine is an element commonly used to treat swimming pool water. In the small doses required to treat the water, it is generally harmless to bathers, keeping bacteria and microorganisms in check.

However, thoughts of taking a dip in a local pool have been altered for many, with news of chlorine gas clouds, evacuations and pool closures affecting a number of facilities. Several closures have been reported across the UK, most notably the London Aquatic Centre where 200 people were evacuated and 29 people were hospitalised. More recently, there was an incident at a Yorkshire hotel where 16 staff were taken ill with two hospitalised.

The dangers of chlorine gas leaks at pools are well documented – from the importance of safe storage and handling of chemicals, common causes of chlorine gas leaks and what to do in the event of a leak.

As with all dangers, prevention is better than cure.

Leaks are preventable and one easy way to detect and therefore control a potential leak is with a chlorine gas detector. For a relatively low cost pool owners and operators can enjoy peace of mind and exceed their Duty of Care responsibilities to employees and bathers alike.

The initial hazard comes from the plant room and installing an early warning system with sensors

placed in key locations is vital to early detection. Smart chlorine gas detectors not only raise the alarm when chlorine gas is detected at dangerously high levels, but have a range of settings that will alert owners and operators to the smallest leaks. Providing the location of a leak, along with the strength of the chlorine gas, allows pool managers to investigate the issue causing the leak, resolve it and prevent a more serious pool evacuation and closure.

PWTAG CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS NOW AVAILABLE TO VIEW FREE

The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG ) have announced that the recorded presentations from their conference, held in March 2022, are now available to watch free of chagrge on the organisation’s website.

The second virtual PWTAG conference looked at the future of a post-pandemic environment as well as sharing learnings from the previous 12 months and hosted a variety of speakers from across Europe and the US.

PWTAG will soon be announcing the date and theme for the 2023 conference. Keep your eyes peeled for their ‘save the date’ later this year.

SITE CHOSEN FOR NEW SCOTTISH WELLBEING HUB

Clackmannanshire Councillors have decided that a new Wellbeing Hub for the region will be located at The Pavilion in Alloa. The decision was taken at a recent council meeting and marks a significant step forward in the project’s development.

The Council has committed to invest in a state-of-the-art facility, including a swimming pool. The development is being informed at every stage by the views of the community and stakeholder groups.

Officers, architects and specialist project managers have gone through a detailed process in pulling together essential information to make the decision on the most appropriate site.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Graham Lindsay said: “The Wellbeing Hub is such an exciting project that I know everyone will want to get behind it. It is so important that we no longer look back, but look forward with innovation and real ambition for Clackmannanshire.”

The Wellbeing Hub will be part of a wider network connecting facilities and providers of sport, physical activity and wellbeing programmes across Clackmannanshire.

Waterco’s MultiCyclone A Key Feature At Eco Pool Installation

Surrounded by the rolling Shropshire Hills, the Baron at Bucknell near Ludlow is a traditional free house country inn. When Michael Caffyn-Parsons from Inspired By Water happened to stay there, he struck up a casual conversation with co-owner Phil Wright.

“He asked me what we did and I ended up showing him our brochures and website on swimming ponds, something he had not previously heard of,” Michael recalled.

“As it turns out he was considering a swimming pool as he had permission to build some luxury garden rooms.”

As the region surrounding the Baron at Bucknell is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Phil and his wife Debra liked the idea that guests could swim in a natural system that seamlessly integrated with the rustic landscape.

Working with colleague Tim Gunning, a natural swimming pool engineer, Michael recommended a range of Waterco’s filtration and sanitation products for the Wright’s proposed new outdoor pool.

“Equipment includes an Exotuff 30” Waterco Bead Filter, which is far superior mechanically and biologically to anything else on the market, and

Aquamite 1.25 pumps which are also used to draw water through the reparation area pipework,” he explained.

“The system also includes a MultiCyclone MC 16, which we have fitted with our own automated valve so it can be flushed out by remote control.”

The MultiCyclone is a key feature of the system as it helps remove debris through the process of centrifugal filtration prior to reaching the filter. Furthermore, the addition of the automated valve on the waste ensures that the sediment bowl is cleaned regularly with minimal effort.

The 10m x 5m x 2m swimming pool looks like a natural oasis, where guests swim in pristine water filtered by plants, microorganisms, and Waterco’s superior sanitation products.

Contracts Signed For New Swimming

Facilities In Warwickshire

Contracts have now been exchanged, making way for the creation of two brand-new multi-million pound swimming pools in Kenilworth, Warwickshire

A background of inflation, archaeological investigation and supply chain issues in the construction industry have caused unforeseen delays to the Abbey Fields project, but now following an extended period of re-costing, Warwick District Council has reached an agreement with AR Demolition Ltd to demolish the current facilities and with Kier to construct the new pools and adjoining amenities.

Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture, Councillor Liam Bartlett commented: “Whilst we regret the delay in starting work, it was crucial that we did not compromise on the quality or value for

money to council taxpayers for these new facilities.

I am therefore delighted to report that contracts are now signed, allowing us to provide the district’s residents with two wonderful swimming pools at Abbey Fields, with additional year-round pool space, sun-terrace and café, which is in keeping with its beautiful backdrop.

“It is my intention to offer local taxpayers as much transparency as possible over the revised project costs and will be providing a Council Committee with a comprehensive report at the earliest opportunity.”

The next stage of work will see demolition contractors on site, installing fencing and hoarding. There will also be further archaeological investigations. These investigations will be running at the same time as the demolition.

Jimmy Lamb, FISPE Announced As New ISPE Vice-President

It was recently confirmed that Jimmy Lamb, FISPE has been elected as the ISPE Vice-President, and will take over as ISPE President in October from current ISPE President Philip Barlow, FISPE.

Jimmy follows in his father’s (John Lamb) footsteps and is the first person to follow a family member as Vice-President (and ultimately President) of the Institute. John was ISPE President from 1990-1992.

Jimmy is the Commercial Manager of Pollet Pool Group UK, and is well known to many in the pool industry, having given numerous presentations at both ISPE Seminars and ISPE Workshops at SPATEX and provided other training around the

pool and spa industry. Jimmy is also a regular contributor to the ISPE Magazine with technical articles and advice.

His inauguration as the new ISPE President will take place during the 126th ISPE One-Day Seminar which is being held in Weybridge, Surrey on Tuesday 18 October. In addition to having a range of seminars covering the broad subject of Heating, the day will also play host to the 2022 ISPE Awards, where trophies will be awarded to some of the those who submitted outstanding ISPE exam papers earlier in the year.

The ISPE Filtration Workshop Announced

This will take place on Tuesday 8 November at Plastipack’s premises courtesy of Peter Adlington, FISPE. The ISPE Filtration Workshop is extremely popular and is for a maximum of 16 delegates.

The workshop is run by ISPE Fellows, Chris Carr and Philip Barlow assisted by Kim Mumford, MISPE, and gives basic training and guidance to new recruits and/or service personnel with limited experience of swimming pool filtration and servicing. There is a mixture of activity during the day, from classroomstyle PowerPoint presentations (such as pipework sizing and installation, sizing a pump and filter for both domestic and

commercial pools, and installation and servicing tips) to hands-on activities where delegates have tuition in stripping down and re-building a pump and filter, and have a go at making a pipework test piece. There is a short multiplechoice exam at the end of the day and certificates are sent out along with copies of all the presentations, shortly after the

event. Refreshments are provided during the day which starts at around 9am and concludes by about 4pm. Detailed typical programmes will be sent on request. PoolLab 2.0 Photometer – Three Measuring Chambers, Wi-Fi And More!

Germany’s Water-i.d. GmbH, which has successfully produced and distributed the PoolLab 1.0 since 2017, have announced a successor model, the PoolLab 2.0, which will be available from around February 2023.

With this upgraded version, Water-i.d. wants to set new standards and is once again using the latest technology and other innovations.

For example, the PoolLab 2.0 will have not just one but three parallel measuring chambers, so that up to three water values can be measured simultaneously. As with the PoolLab 1.0, the permanently installed triple cuvette can also be exchanged in the PoolLab 2.0 and results obtained after only two keystrokes.

The new model can measure 24 pool water values (versus 13 in the 1.0), including hardness, copper, phosphate and much more in addition to chlorine, active oxygen, pH, alkalinity and cyanuric acid.

In addition to the Bluetooth connection to the free LabCOM app/ software/cloud from the previous generation, the PoolLab 2.0 will also have a Wi-Fi connection in order to be able to communicate instantly with the LabCOM cloud without the need to connect to a smartphone first. The difference is that the MC12 contains fewer cyclones, resulting in the unit being able to operate at lower flow rates while still being able to remove sediment from the pool water.

T&A Announce Acquisition Of Covrex And Walter Piscine Brands

Technics & Applications (T&A), a major player in the pool cover market, is continuing its growth momentum and recently announced it had acquired the Covrex and Walter Piscine brands, both of which are available in the UK through Fairlocks Pool Products.

Walter Piscine and Covrex, formerly part of the familyowned company TSPH (The Swimming Pool Hub), will strengthen the European presence of T&A and expand its product range.

Covrex, the manufacturer of automatic pool covers, has built up a solid reputation since 2004 thanks to its flagship product: the insulating foam filled slat, patented and marketed under the name Covrex Classic.

Founded in 1992 by Lucien Walter, Alsacebased Walter Piscine manufactuers a wide range of swimming pool covers (movable decks, bar safety covers, winter covers, etc.) and these products will help to expand the T&A range.

T&A has established a leading position in the swimming pool cover market thanks to its

Providing A Voice And More For Our Industry

What a contrasting year it continues to be, from the hugely positive news from another great summer of sporting success (congratulations to all of the participants and medal winners) through to the number of serious challenges facing our industry (and wider society) from issues such as hosepipe bans, energy price rises and economic uncertainty.

Whatever the challenges, it is important to have a voice with the relevant bodies or groups, and there has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes from the various committees and chairs, and the Andover team to have the views of our industry represented. Examples include working with The Tile Association (TTA) on updating their tiling in swimming pools guidance and helping to revise the swimming pool-related materials for The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers (CIPHE).

An initial meeting has also been held with Water UK and relevant water companies to address some issues that have arisen from the introduction of hosepipe bans that have brought hot tubs into the scope of the ban. The ban prohibits filling or topping up using a hosepipe or fixed plumbing such as an auto top-up. BISHTA’s concern is that hot tubs are not currently in the scope of the Water Industry Code of Practice. This has understandably caused some confusion for

hot tub owners and retailers as they try to get to grips with which water companies are including hot tubs in their ban and which are not. Southern Water and South East Water are following the guidance in the water industry’s Code of Practice and NOT including hot tubs in their hosepipe ban. The other four water companies have included them in their respective hosepipe bans (South West Water, Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Welsh Water). Discussions continue on how to ensure consistency while dealing with the lack of available water due to very low rainfall, while the water companies continue to tackle the various leaks from the ageing infrastructure. Updates are being posted on the BISHTA and SPATA websites, so look out for this news.

It is still hoped to organise a fasttrack Pool Plant Operations (PPO) course with the STA, for experienced staff in the pool industry, but this will be subject to demand. BISHTA will continue to offer a range of courses on Water Hygiene Management, Dangerous Goods, and more Safe Hot Tub Handling courses. Qualifications for Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs (with NICEIC) and the Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) are also expected to be delivered before Christmas (and certainly before Easter).

On Monday 14 November, Global Piscine Europe will be the venue for WAPSA’s sixth annual meeting, and this will be an opportunity to learn from other associations about how they represent their members.

Addressing The Issues Of Heat Pump Installations

This article aims to convey issues that are likely to become ever more critical for heat pump installers and suppliers as the UK reduces its fossil fuel emissions; part of its plans to create a carbon-neutral society.

It is widely recognised that electricity provided by renewable technology is, in part, a means of meeting this objective. This is achieved by replacing fossil fuel boilers with electrically driven equipment such as heat pumps and replacing petrol/diesel/LPG powered vehicles with electrically driven alternatives.

Clearly, this will increase demand on the electricity network, which the Energy Networks Association (ENA) need to address, and requires changes to local authority planning regulations to recognise the changing way homes are heated.

This article defines heat pumps as electrically driven appliances that contain a refrigeration circuit using a compressor. They may be used for air/water heating/ cooling and dehumidification. Both air source and ground source heat pumps are covered under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) detailed later in this article, but please note that ground source heat pumps and dehumidifiers are not in the scope of the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), which is also explained in more detail in this article.

WHAT LEGISLATION IS APPLICABLE FOR HEAT PUMPS?

There are at least four relevant areas of legislation to review. The first piece of legislation is The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (No. 2) (England) Order, more commonly known as the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), which allows Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to determine if domestic pools in back gardens are permitted development, or whether they require planning permission. Within the GPDO, domestic outdoor swimming pools have been given permitted development under Class E (which typically has included fossil fuel heat sources for the pool), so long as they meet the various stipulations (such as not being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, etc.). In the GPDO, the use of a heat pump is included under Class G, but as the LPA may not be aware that the swimming pool is to have a heat pump fitted, although the pool itself may not require planning permission, it is very likely that the heat pump should.

In relation to heat pumps, the GPDO (Class G) requires some key factors to be in place for permitted development, including:

• Only one heat pump (or other renewable heat source) has permitted development within the boundary of a dwelling.

• The heat pump size to be used must not exceed 0.6m3 in volume.

• The heat pump has to be installed at least 1m from the boundary of a neighbouring dwelling (but in reality, after a noise calculation is undertaken, this may have to be many metres from the boundary, where there are habitable spaces). Typically, habitable spaces are in the home, but they may include outside seating areas in the garden. When the heat pump is installed in a space facing the highway in front of a property, it must be at ground level.

Heat pumps that provide heating and cooling are excluded from permitted development, so they will always require planning permission.

Several properties are excluded from permitted development, including listed buildings and historical monuments, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, etc. It is worth checking with the LPA to ensure there will be no issues during a project if there is any doubt about permitted development.

As the GPDO references the MCS, this ordinarily requires heat pumps to be installed by MCS-3005 accredited installers and the product to be MCS-007 approved. SPATA has successfully received written confirmation from the MCS that swimming pool heat pump installations fall outside the scope of MCS, and so installers do not have to be MCS-3005 accredited. However, SPATA would strongly urge installers to attend the swimming pool heat pump course run for the benefit of the industry, to learn about the relevant information provided by the MCS to avoid planning issues. SPATA remains in dialogue with the MCS about the most appropriate requirements for the heat pumps themselves, as SPATA is not aware of any swimming pool heat pump that is MCS-007 accredited.

The second piece of legislation relates to the heat pump being installed in compliance with the Energy Networks Association (ENA) requirements, which is for the customer to action under the Distribution Code (or D Code). For each pool project installing a heat pump, there must be an ENA form completed, with details of the location and type of heat pump. If the heat pump is on the ENA list, it is a much simpler process, but where it is not, then the installer needs to work with the heat pump manufacturer to provide the relevant information to complete the form.

Therefore, it follows that there is a growing need for manufacturers of heat pumps and installers to prove that their products meet the relevant British standards for flicker and harmonics testing and that installers fully understand how electrical supplies should be assessed prior to installing new equipment. The flicker and harmonics testing help to ensure there are no quality issues

for consumers, such as flickering lights or adverse effects on power transmission and power generating equipment.

The third piece of legislation relates to flammable refrigerant gases covered under the F-Gas Regulations, as most heat pumps currently (and dehumidifiers will in future) contain flammable gases, which would place them in the scope of this Regulation. This legislation requires a risk assessment to be carried out for heat pumps and dehumidifiers installed within a building, which would include a plant room.

The fourth piece of legislation relates to the storage and transportation of Dangerous Goods, as equipment with flammable F-gases is covered under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations (CDG) 2009. Industry training courses are available on Dangerous Goods, so make sure your staff are suitably trained, to avoid possible fines.

WHAT DO MANUFACTURERS AND/ OR IMPORTERS NEED TO DO?

Manufacturers and/or importers need to:

• Make available product testing data results to support the relevant BS EN standards they comply with depending on the heat pump size, which for harmonics is BS EN 61000-32 or -312 and for flicker, it is 61000-33 or -311. Additionally, manufacturers need to provide the power requirements, including starting amps of their equipment.

• Make available their sound power data (not sound pressure) in order for installers to perform the noise calculation test required by MCS-020 (covered later in this article).

• Seek to have their products included on the ENA list, as this aids the installers in completing the ENA form mentioned above.

• Where applicable, manufacturers liaise with their distributors to ensure they have all the relevant information to pass to their trade customers installing the heat pumps.

• Ensure they comply with the UK F-Gas quota legislation that has replaced the EU version post-BREXIT

WHAT DO INSTALLERS NEED TO DO?

Installers need to be aware of:

• The GPDO and MCS requirements outlined above

• Know how to undertake (or who to ask) a noise calculation in accordance with the GPDO requirements

• They will need to be familiar with completing the ENA form

• F-Gas regulations regarding the use of global warming refrigerants

• Dangerous Goods transportation and storage requirements as most modern heat pumps contain flammable substances

• Ideally, they will have attended (or are being booked onto) the heat pump course mentioned.

We continue our dialogue with MCS about their installer and product standards with a view to giving feedback on any changes to the GPDO.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?

As previously mentioned in this article, SPATA can offer a heat pump course and to ensure it can go ahead, despite the uncertainties of COVID, it is a 4-hour online module. The cost is only £25+VAT for SPATA members and £35+VAT for all other attendees.

It covers the basics of heat pumps and how they work, whether planning permission is required, the requirements of the heat pump, and what installers are required to do. A worked example of how to undertake a noise calculation to MCS 020 is provided. Common mistakes when installing heat pumps are covered to try and minimise these types of incidents happening in the future.

To assess the knowledge gained on the course, an open book test has to be successfully completed with a pass mark of at least 80%. The course provides four CPD points for attendees.

Playing A Part In Selling Chemicals Responsibly

SPATA and BISHTA have been working with colleagues from the police, seconded to the Home Office, who have been helping associations in various industries to raise awareness of the need to be vigilant when selling chemicals, especially to end-users, to minimise threats from terrorists. This article gives some hints and tips about what key messages have been learned for the pool and hot tub industry, and it promotes the need to be aware of potential issues to keep the threat of terrorism as low as possible.

SELLING CHEMICALS

When selling chemicals, do you always consider if any offences have been committed under the Poisons Act 1972?

Have you ever asked yourself these three questions?

• Is this product you are selling a regulated or reportable substance?

• If so, do you view this sale as suspicious?

• Do you know how to report suspicious activity?

The swimming pool, spa and hot tub sectors have a vital role in this process. The industry provides access to chemicals for owners of these products across the UK, both on the high street and online, and some of these chemicals will fall within the Poisons Act legislation as explosive precursors, and as such, they can be synthesised into homemade explosive devices.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

With this knowledge, it is more likely that we can already recognise when the products selected don’t quite match what is typically purchased, or we understand when product combinations and quantities seem unusual. You already engage with customers to understand their needs and ensure that the products and chemicals are safe and suitable. This is the perfect opportunity to explore the products further with the customer. It need not be more than your usual sales interaction, but unconsciously you are gaining the information to process if the transaction details make sense.

If you sell any ‘regulated’ chemical, which most likely would be Sulphuric Acid or Hydrogen Peroxide, there are additional legal obligations on top of the suspicious transaction reporting that must be undertaken before any sale:

• To assist you with selling chemicals responsibly, the Home Office has launched a video to raise awareness. This will be very useful to show staff as part of their training, to make them aware of what is legally required and will have more clues as to what to look out for.

• If staff believe they have some suspicious activity to report, this can now be completed directly online.

• Whilst new launches are currently under wraps, the Certikin stand will incorporate many of the company’s extensive portfolio of tried and tested energy saving products, such as the iSAVER Inverter − a low-cost solution designed to reduce the running costs of pool circulation pumps and improve the efficiency of filtration by as much as 60%. Shining A Light On Energy Efficiency In The Pool Hall

In this issue, Ruth Prophet, a duty officer at the University of Stirling Sport, STA pool plant tutor and STA brand ambassador looks at pool hall lighting efficiency and explains the measures taken at the facility to reduce costs and CO2 emissions

Upgrading the lighting on the poolside at the University of Stirling Sport (UoSS) had been right at the top of my wish list from the first day I started working there. For me, the need to have better lighting wasn’t just an additional extra but an essential to our operations.

Lighting impacts everything we do. Not only is it a key factor to the health and safety of swimmers, allowing lifeguards to have a clear view of the full pool tank; but as a performance sports facility for elite athletes, we often have a need to utilise underwater cameras for athlete assessment purposes and so the need to have sufficient lighting below the surface of the water was an added factor.

The energy usage and cost implications involved with lighting a pool hall is huge. For our facility, the swimming pool is open from 06:00 until 22:00 and so the lighting could be burning for up to 16 hours per day.

Historically, swimming pools use more energy per m² than any other building type (up to 5 times as much as an office building). With the current financial climate, and the ever-rising cost of electricity and gas, the amount of energy being consumed will be

a critical consideration for many businesses for the financial viability of running a swimming pool. While we can look to reduce our energy and electricity usage through control measures, by switching equipment and lighting off when we don’t need them, this will have limited impact within our business needs.

One of our only other options then, was to upgrade what we already had with more energy efficient options and, in the case of lighting, opt for lighting solutions with better colour performance.

At UoSS we opted to replace the existing lamps with new bright white LEDs. Not only did we replace and upgrade the ones that were already in place, but we also increased our capacity by completing major electrical works allowing us to double the number of lamps we had. Previously we only had lighting down one side of the swimming pool, but after completion of the project we had lighting running down both sides.

With the previous lighting at UoSS, we projected that we would produce 292 tonnes of CO2 over the next five years. With energy prices being what they were at the start of 2022 we

expected this to cost in the region of £81,000.

With the lighting upgrade having taken place, we have now calculated that over the next 5 years our CO2 emissions will decrease to 122 tonnes (a saving of nearly 170 tonnes when compared to the previous lighting). We also estimate that the cost of running the new lights will reduce to just £33,700 which is a significant cost saving.

As well as the running costs and emissions being greatly reduced, it is also prudent to take into consideration the cost of ongoing maintenance. The older bulbs required regular replacements and, in my experience, were prone to faults that we frequently had electricians out to fix and get back online. We had factored this in with our cost projections and estimated this would cost around £2,800 in replacement bulbs and maintenance over the next five years.

Taking all things into account, after the initial install of the lights and the upfront costs involved, the payback period was calculated to be 92 months, around 7.5 years. This was prior to the recent fluctuation in energy costs and so we may see a shift in these numbers over the next months and years.

The next stage of our plans is to fit a series of mirrors and reflectors (secondary reflector system), which will increase the luminosity and effectiveness of our new lights – and allow us to show off our world class facilities in the best possible light!

A New Captain At The Certikin Tiller

With a steady pair of hands, Neil Stephenson has settled in well in his first three months at the Certikin helm. Neil, who has been with the company for over 23 years, is dedicated to ensuring that customers continue to receive the highest level of service, technical back-up, and an unparalleled range of premier quality products, befitting of the UK’s water leisure market leader.

Q. How did you become involved with Certikin?

A. After graduating from University, I worked in DIY store management but decided a life in retail wasn’t compatible with a young family. My then wife worked at Certikin and she put in a good word for me with the team, including Patrick Thorpe and Neil Murray, and before I knew it…

Q. How did your career progress at Certikin?

A. I joined in 1999 and have held positions in stock control, health and safety, service management and the purchasing department at the Witney HQ. In 2002, I joined Certikin’s Executive team and was made General Manager of what was to become Certikin North – this meant a relocation to the Leeds area. At the time, Certikin had purchased the assets of Aire Bank Covers and I was tasked with introducing linings and growing the overall division. I managed Certikin North until 2017 when I was appointed Certikin’s Product Development Manager, overseeing new product initiatives and compliance, marketing and liaising with the BSPF.

Q. Biggest career achievement to date?

A. Naturally, being appointed Certikin’s Managing Director is my biggest achievement, something I am extremely proud of and an opportunity I am honoured

to have been given. Previous to this I would say the time managing Certikin North – I gained valuable experience in running and developing a small but successful satellite business with the help of a fantastic team.

Q. How does your new role compare with your previous at Certikin?

A. The biggest difference is the volume and variety of work and being involved, one way or another, in every aspect of the business on a day-to-day basis. It’s exhilarating, fascinating, challenging, eye-opening and extremely satisfying, all at the same time.

Q. How has Certikin’s new HQ benefited/ transformed operations?

A. There are numerous ways in which our new premises have vastly improved and simplified our everyday operation to meet the needs of our growing business. We had seriously outgrown our old premises and the new building has afforded us the ability to greatly enhance our customer service. We can store, handle and despatch more products more efficiently; our production spaces are less congested; we now boast attractive meeting/training rooms – the list is endless. I am delighted to say that the new premises have had a really cohesive and positive impact within the team. We are in the best shape possible to go forward and mark the company’s 60th anniversary next year.

Q. Will your appointment usher in any new practices or policies?

A. There will be, and there already have been, changes – but these are related to my own way of running a business and to responding to external and market forces, as opposed to any fundamental changes to what Certikin represents or provides as a business.

Q. What’s next for Certikin and what challenges are on the horizon?

A. The focus is on continual improvement at all levels and, of course, this will take time.

There are multiple challenges at present, faced by everyone. The current challenge is to steer a steady course within what is a very turbulent environment for businesses and consumers: dealing with supply chain issues and cost variations; resource limitations (including labour); economic variances and uncertainty as well as the fallout from Brexit which is still having a big impact on all of us.

Despite this, however, it seems completely logical that the overall demand for water leisure, in all its forms, will remain a constant – so, if we are all resolved in dealing with the many challenges, the opportunities will outweigh these challenges.

Q. Trends you think will happen?

A. I think the adoption of newer technologies will become more prominent in our industry – not only within the products themselves to aid in running and maintaining pools and spas, but in the way they are produced. Linked with this will be the need, and responsibility that we all face, to continue to adapt to, accommodate and support, the needs of the environment, including the management of water as a resource.

No Job Too Big OrSmall For Plastica’s Commercial Covers

Over the years Plastica has built a reputation for delivering quality, well-made products – none less so than their commercial covers and reel systems. Sandford Parks Lido can lay testament to that, with Plastica’s involvement with the successful outdoor pool spanning 20 or more years.

In that time, the company have replaced the three main swimming pool covers at least three or four times, and that’s not because of any failing on Plastica’s part – the conditions the covers endure at this site are extreme to say the least! A popular outdoor pool, well used and frequented by many swimmers from March through to October, mean that the cover and reel system is put through its paces daily seven months of the year.

Originally opened in 1935, Sandford Parks Lido is a Grade II Listed heated outdoor swimming pool. The facility consists of a 50 x 27 metre main pool, a children’s pool, and paddling pool. The main pool is heated to 26°C and children’s pool to 30°C.

The site was re-surveyed in 2017 when

they drained the pools and undertook a minor refurbishment. Back in February this year, Plastica made three new 5mm polyolefin closed cell foam Supercovers (available in blue or grey) of approximately 50 x 8.9 metres. Fitted with a commercial leading edge, reinforcing reel end and wind wires, each cover takes about a day and a half to make and takes up a large portion of the company’s shop floor. The reels on site are three slatted bench reels with gearboxes that Plastica made and installed over 20 years ago.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, Hackney’s new Britannia Leisure Centre is a state-of-the-art leisure centre built by main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction for the London Borough of Hackney.

Run on behalf of the Council by leisure operator GLL, this stunning and award-winning facility opened its doors to the public last year and received over 10,000 visitors in its first week of opening!

Set over four storeys, it has a wide range of sporting and leisure facilities, and when it comes to wet leisure options, the centre really does have plenty. It features an impressive six-lane 25m main pool

Piscine Global Europe, the leading global event in the pool and wellness sector, will be back in Lyon for a faceto-face event from 15 to 18 November this year. It will finally provide an opportunity for professionals in the sector to gather, exchange views and boost their business, but also – at long last – to meet up in a social setting.

Organised in partnership with the French Federation for Pool and Spa Professionals (FFP), Piscine Global Europe is now more than ever a strategic international event for the wet leisure sector as a whole and the event will see several hundred exhibitors and brands return to Lyon’s Eurexpo venue.

Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on the Tuesday and the three winning products or services will be showcased in a specific area of the exhibition.

• The Pool Design Awards – With an Awards ceremony taking place on the Thursday, these Awards shine a spotlight on architects and their pool projects, whether for private pools, public pools or as a renovation project.

• The Jobs and Training Campus – Piscine Global Europe is joining forces with the FPP to organise a first for 2022. This area will bring together initial and continuing training organisations that will be on hand to answer questions from employers, employees, jobseekers, adults making a career change, and young people in education.

Reducing the environmental impact of public and private pools will be a big theme at the show. Optimisation of water and energy consumption, waste management, a novel approach to water treatment, the challenges of pool renovation and maintenance... no matter the specific subject, sustainable development is a key topic of discussion in the sector. Pool professionals are aware of this and are taking action to reduce the environmental impact of private and public pools, whether through technologies or new approaches and practices.

and lower consumption, and the commitment of professionals in the sector, have enabled real progress to be made in terms of energy consumption, water treatment and waste management In pool water treatment, 80% of the process is mechanical (filtration) and 20% involves products used to eliminate bacteria and keep the water clean. Although filtration systems consume 6.5 times less energy than 40 years ago, it must also be noted that alternatives to the use of these chemicals are becoming more widespread. Thus, treatment by salt chlorination, ozone or UV are gaining popularity amongst both professionals and private pool owners.

Water consumption has also dropped sharply in France: -45% in 25 years. This number is explained by a combination of two factors: • Innovation leading to the use of more effective filtration techniques in particular, reducing the quantity of new water used • The reduced volumes of water in smaller swimming pools.

Energy consumption of pools has also significantly decreased, whether for heating, filtration or lighting, which now consumes 40 times less energy than 40 years ago.

Regarding management of waste from pools and pool equipment, 60% is recycled, 30% is eliminated or energy is recovered from it, and 10% is re-used. The FPP is currently working on setting up waste management solutions, in connection with renowned eco-organisations in the context of the application of the wider responsibility of manufacturers for products and materials in the construction or building sector (REP PCMB).

CHANGES IN DEMAND – THE CHALLENGE OF RENOVATION

Advances in techniques, energy optimisation, a change of aesthetic criteria, a new garden layout... these are all reasons to renovate a pool from an ageing installation to a modern pool that meets current challenges. Renovation provides an opportunity to benefit from the latest progress not only in terms of heating, water quality and energy savings, but also materials and design.

Regarding public pools, often built in the 1960s/1970s, concerns involving energy renovation and harmonisation with current standards are just as important.

CHANGES IN DEMAND – THE CHALLENGE OF RECYCLING MATERIALS

Recycling or re-use solutions are already available for pool materials. However, for certain elements such as PVC liners (which must be replaced every 10-15 years), or shells made of polyester and other plastics, there are at present no suitable recovery or recycling solutions. The FPP is currently looking into how these can be set up, in connection with eco-organisations.

CHANGES IN DEMAND –AUTOMATION

Pool automation contributes to saving energy. You can, for example, manage the pool heat pump so it only runs when necessary, depending on the water temperature. The same is true for optimisation of filtration systems, and management of pool covers, water treatment or lighting.

CHANGES IN DEMAND – NEW SKILLS

The demand from the wider public in terms of more sustainable and automated pools with higher performance requires development of skills amongst the teams of professionals involved in these various aspects. Training in natural water treatments, pool and home automation, or the wider responsibility of manufacturers for buildings and recycling, is now offered at initial or adult training centres in the form of modules, enabling professionals to meet the demands and challenges of the market.

Given the brief to construct a ‘budget-friendly, low maintenance pool, with an enclosure to extend the swimming season’, Hayling Island-based Simplex Pools turned to Certikin.

When it comes to increasing the overall functionality of swimming pool spaces, especially within smaller pools, counter-current systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind the success of swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Affordable and easy to install, in this issue, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems

There’s various reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity.

Perhaps space is an issue or a budget is restricted. Maybe there are aesthetic reasons why a large pool just won’t work. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only viable option but whilst fun, they often just seem to lack that certain something –and often, it’s the ability to enjoy a proper, uninterrupted swim. The answer to this problem for many pools and their owners is a counter-current system and they’re use and incorporation in pools, particularly those of a smaller nature, is becoming more widespread. That’s no real surprise given they are a product which enhances the usability of smaller pools and add some much-needed wow factor. Their installation puts them more on a par with their larger format rivals and in certain circumstances, you could even argue they surpass them.

Of course, their use isn’t restricted to just smaller pools, but that is clearly where they are best deployed and really come into their own.

Regardless of pool size, once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to have unlimited fun, swim for as long as a user likes plus their introduction can often provide some additional hydrotherapy options too. With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for

German manufacturer UWE invented the counter-current system in 1967 and their creation has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. By regulating the current, even small pools can become really exciting –and that goes for trained athletes as well.

With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of swimming needs and abilities. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA

Fit@Home

counter-current system.

It was designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, right where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, the pressure-sensitive single-button PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75 m3/h to 225 m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA.

For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, popular choices are the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes and the control panel – all the components are preassembled and it takes minimum effort to install, but gives maximum pleasure. In variants from 11 to 18 litres per second, all with a swivel nozzle, fully adjustable flow, plus an air bubble bath.

Each X-Stream Duo kit option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay between them and it uses pneumatic On/Off switches, accessible from the pool to keep

any electrics away from the bather.

Perfect for a small size pool where space is limited, Plastica also sell the countercurrent jet with white LED light kit which is ideal for fitness training, underwater massage and endless no-lap swimming. The Jet can be used as a single or double jet system with one or two pumps. Welcome To The Metaverse

– It’s The Next Big Thing

It’s been on the news, it’s been in the papers and Mark Zuckerberg has renamed his empire after it. The Metaverse is the hot new thing that will change the way we live and work. Again.

If you do Facebook advertising, you’ll see that you are now doing Meta for Business. You might also have noticed that other than the logo, nothing much seems to have changed but Facebook are claiming that they will change from a social media business to a Metaverse one within five years.

Computer geeks and business analysts love predicting the future because it makes them sound very wise and they can never be caught out as, once we are all actually living in that future, no one can ever remember what their predictions were.

For instance, The Wall Street Journal says that Metaverse spending will total $5 trillion in 2030. That’s trillions of dollars spent in a virtual place that even its biggest supporters agree doesn’t really exist yet.

ARTIFICIAL REALITY

We are increasingly being told to put our faith in technology, in the digital space, in a technocentric world that most of us don’t really understand and the Metaverse is being touted as that next big tech revolution.

It will be a virtual world built of augmented reality and accessed via VR headsets, but surely we spend more than enough time on screen already. I thought the idea was that we should try and cut down.

Don’t get me wrong. I think new technologies can be marvellous. Netflix and Strava have changed my life for the better, but I don’t want to work in a virtual office or spend time with virtual friends.

I could play Tour de France 2022 on Xbox but it wouldn’t be half as much fun as cycling to work in the rain.

VIRTUAL INTELLIGENCE

The pandemic certainly has changed the way we work though.

We have two Teams suites at Golden Coast and we have online meetings with customers

on a regular basis, even though we no longer have to. I still believe that face-to-face meetings are best but we have been able to cut our mileage down significantly and it’s hard not to appreciate something that lets you spend less time on the motorway.

Will a virtual reality version of Zoom or Teams be significantly better than what we have now? Will it encourage us to spend more time communicating and working like that?

I don’t think so, but that is the way the tech industry is trying to take us.

REAL LIFE

The pleasure that people get from their pools, spas and saunas is a visceral, tactile and sensual one. It’s about the feeling of moving through water, being massaged by the spa jets or feeling the heat of the sauna warming your bones.

None of that could be further from a digital experience if it tried but we are now offering a ‘virtual sauna’ that people can explore online.

A SORROWFUL EXPERIENCE

Queen Elizabeth’s passing was a sad occasion and it was easy to feel the depth of feeling that spread through the country. What was perhaps more surprising was the number of people who took part in the funeral ceremonies.

The Queen’s funeral drew audiences of up to 28 million in the UK and as many as 4 billion people watched worldwide. However, an astounding one million people attended the public funeral procession in London. The Queen spent four days lying in state as mourners slowly passed her coffin after standing in what was, at its longest, a ten mile queue that took up to 24 hours to move from beginning to end.

These were real people wanting to share real feelings.

It was for the Coronation of Elizabeth II that television really came into its own with many homes buying a set just so they could watch. The end of her reign coincided with what may prove to be the beginnings of a new way for people to communicate, to socialise and to gather but it’s flesh and blood feelings that matter, and that will never change.

In a traditional swim spa, the user has to switch the pumps on and off manually for finding the proper water-flow which fits their fitness level. The W-flow system swim spas will be equipped with brand new swim software. Combining this and the new W-flow system the new swim spas become a professional training appliance.
