When it comes to the weather in the UK, we all know that at best, it can be fairly unpredictable, but the last couple of months have been somewhat of a rollercoaster period. It has resulted in the Met Office announcing provisional figures for September in the UK being the joint warmest on record, sunnier than average but also, wetter than average. And the start of October has been a similar story of extremely mild and even pleasant weather, especially for the time of year. So its been far from all bad news. Even better news was that the last of the hosepipe bans were lifted, plus the unusual periods of decent warm weather helped to make up for a poor start to the season and have even extended it a little. In short, autumn seems to have been delayed, perhaps only by a small amount, but the last couple of months certainly seem to have assisted our industry which has enjoyed a busy period. Energy prices have been falling too, a huge help to our industry, but as with the weather, this too now seems to be an unpredictable factor for both owners and operators. As the weather turns, which it will do sooner rather than later, energy costs and the efficient operation of all wet leisure products become even more crucial. To assist with this change and the need to seek out the best ways to operate efficiently, the cooler months of the year also traditionally herald the start of show season. This normally means new product launches plus the chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed. I suspect this year, new products and the sharing of information on how to run pools, spas and more as efficiently as possible will be the highest priority for many. On the theme of events, inside this latest issue,

When it comes to sectors, we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers design and build flexibility which results in some stunning and durable solutions for both high-end domestic and commercial markets alike. Continuing on the subject of high-end, hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models costing in excess of £10,000 from a variety of brands. We’ve also take a closer look at the latest enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing costs and minimising the effort involved in outdoor pool ownership. Counter-current systems also makes a return as we take an in-depth look at the latest products which provide pools, particularly those with a smaller footprint, with a powerful option to produce a more complete swimming pool experience. Products that are manufactured in the UK also make a return and in a separate piece, we take a closer look at how Plastica have invested in new machinery and production technology. As if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Adam Clark shares his thoughts on the threat that is facing public swimming pools across the country. Schlüter-Systems Adds Warmth At New Somerset Spa Tile and stone experts, Schlüter-Systems, were involved recently in the renovation and restoration of The Newt Hotel & Spa – a stunning country estate surrounded by beautiful gardens, nestled within the heart of Somerset. The project consisted of three different areas: Hadspen House, The Farmyard and Barton Spa. The spa was designed from scratch to serve as an enticing draw for guests to relax, whilst the other locations were renovated, giving the estate a new lease of life. Schlüter took on the most significant role for the creation of certain elements of the newly built spa facilities which adjoined Hadspen House. Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD, a tile backerboard, helped construct multiple focal points within the spa area, including the vanity units in the male and female changing rooms. The portico around one of the doors in the main spa was a particularly eye-catching element which added character to the space. The durability of the tile backerboard allowed for 20mm Carrara Marble to be easily fixed over for a beautiful and luxurious finish. Heating elements were also provided with the help of Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO, the electric undertile heating system. Featuring a studded uncoupling membrane into which heating cables are clipped and securely held in place, it guarantees an even and consistent heating experience which is imperative for a commercial area such as this one. The system was used on benches and seats which were then clad with Carrara Marble, meaning that there was a uniform look with the desired comfort element provided alongside it – resulting in the

perfect spa experience for guests to enjoy. The DUO variant of DITRAHEAT has the added functionality of impact-sound reduction and enabling faster heating of floor and wall coverings due to the special thermal barrier fleece laminated on the underside. Certikin Announces Major Sponsorship Deal With New Charity Partner – Level Water Certikin has teamed up with Level Water (www. levelwater.org), a swimming charity which supports young people with disabilities to access one to one swimming opportunities and start their Learn 2 Swim journey. Level Water’s mission is to secure time and training in a leisure centre/pool coupled with the provision of Level 2 swimming teachers for 1:1 lessons for children with disabilities. Once the facility is on-board, they use their database and Level Water’s contacts within the local community to make them aware these specialised lessons are now available. The time in the water is given free of charge and the cost of the lesson is split between the parents and Level Water,

depending on individual circumstances. Fundraising is used to support the cost of these lessons. Certikin Marketing Manager, Chris Green, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Level Water to help change the lives of young people who typically wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience the huge health and safety benefit, not to mention the joy of learning to swim.” Certikin has already kick started its fundraising campaign via in-house staff activities. which will enable Level Water to provide 250 lessons. IN BRIEF FUTURE OF WARWICKSHIRE POOL PROJECT NOW IN DOUBT The discovery of medieval remains on a construction site has generated a significant increase in the predicted cost and duration for a swimming pool project in Warwickshire. The discovery at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth means that local officials will be presented with a report in November that will ask them to decide whether to proceed with the project or not. If the decision is taken not to proceed then Warwick District Council will have to consider the matter further in subsequent meetings. However, as per the Council’s latest public update, it is considered that any other site would cost even more than the Abbey Fields proposals at the higher current estimate and would take almost one and a half years longer to open to the public. As well as additional cost and time, the proposal to consider an alternative site would carry a higher risk in a number of factors than continuing at Abbey Fields.

POOL WHICH CLOSED DUE TO ENERGY HIGH COSTS TO REOPEN A public swimming pool which was forced to close almost a year ago due to rising energy costs is set to reopen this month. Rye Sports Centre in East Sussex shut its 25m pool in November 2022 but staff kept the pool maintained during the closure. Freedom Leisure, which runs the centre on behalf of Rother District Council, previously advised its annual energy bill had increased from £8m to £20m nationwide, leading to the closure of the facility. Freedom Leisure CEO Ivan Horsfall-Turner said energy prices remain high, however, they were “not as high as they were last winter”.

Project To Reintroduce Swim Facilities In Merthyr Tydfil Nears Completion Thanks to a £6m investment secured by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, works are underway to reintroduce swimming facilities in the Welsh town this autumn after structural damage closed the pool in 2019. Works are being carried out by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, alongside modular pool provider Myrtha Pools. Once complete, the re-commissioned facilities will provide residents with a 25m, six-lane main pool, a dedicated teaching pool plus a new splash pool designed to inspire water confidence for toddlers. The changing facilities will also be updated. Jane Sellwood, CEO of Wellbeing Merthyr which manages the centre said: “Commissioning and conducting works through Alliance Leisure and the UK Leisure Framework has been a good decision. Using the UK Leisure Framework ensures we have access to the best expertise and price at all levels of the supply chain and having Alliance leisure act as a single point of contact has made communications and delivery super simple. So far, all works are on time and on budget.” In addition to re-commissioning the pools, the council is investing in decarbonisation measures which include replacing gas fuelled boilers with more efficient air source heat pumps. This is predicted to cut carbon emissions by 61%. Gillian Dunster, Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, said: “These works will not only give the people of Merthyr Tydfil access to a

IN BRIEF OLYMPIAN OFFICIALLY OPENS RAINHAM LEISURE CENTRE Becky Adlington OBE cut the ribbon to declare the brandnew Rainham Leisure Centre in Essex officially open at a special ceremony recently. Managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Havering Council, the centre celebrated completion of the centre and the opening of its ‘wet side facilities’ – which include an impressive 25m, six-lane swimming pool – by hosting a second family fun weekend, offering free swimming for everyone. ReCreation, founded and owned by Olympians Becky Adlington OBE and Steve Parry MBE, developed the new leisure centre on behalf of Havering Council and Everyone Active. Local school, Rainham Village Primary School, were the first to experience the new swimming pool, as its students enjoyed the first swim. The winner of a creative mural competition with the school was also announced, with one lucky student unveiling their winning mural on the poolside wall, alongside Becky Adlington.

PLANS DROPPED FOR SOMERSET POOL A feasibility study has revealed that plans for a new swimming pool in Minehead appear to be dead in the water after it showed the project was unlikely to be commercially viable. The Somerset town has been without a publicly-operated swimming pool since the local council approved the closure of its Aquasplash facility in 2008. Somerset West and Taunton Council set aside land at the beginning of last year for a potential new pool, and a feasibility study was commissioned. However newly formed authority Somerset Council has confirmed that the pool project is “not being pursued” since the study, undertaken by Glastonburybased APS Pool Contracting Ltd, did not conclude that it would definitely be able to pay for itself.

BAYROL Realigns Its Distribution In The UK Lighthouse has been appointed as a new distributor for the BAYROL product range in the UK, working alongside existing distribution partner Golden Coast to facilitate a smooth transitional period. A New Project Collaboration For Devin At Scottish Leisure Facility

Iconic Stonehaven Lido Gets Mapei Waterproofing Treatment A Mapei Polyurea waterproofing system has been used to restore the historic Stonehaven Open Air Pool in Aberdeenshire. Applied by Anderson Specialist Contracting, the project forms part of renovation works carried out by Aberdeenshire Council. A polyurea waterproofing membrane with excellent chemical resistance, exceptional flexibility and tear strength, Mapei Purtop 1000 N is designed to waterproof structures above and below ground, including roofs, podiums, pools and storage tanks. Mapei was pleased to support Fairhurst Engineers as they explored specification options to establish the right product fit for such a prestigious project. Opened in 1934, Stonehaven Open Air Pool is the UK’s only art deco Olympic-sized heated sea water lido. Threat of closure in the 1990s prompted the founding of a community group – The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool – that works in close partnership with Aberdeenshire Council. Although regularly maintained and repaired, the lido’s multi-layered concrete and paint surface was in

need of renovation. With its extensive expertise in pool waterproofing, Mapei was first approached in 2015 and recommended its Mapelastic Smart system overlaid with a finish. Last summer, Mapei was asked for further advice, as the client was now seeking a seamless solution. With an in depth understanding of previous works carried out – and after discussions with the engineers, and careful consideration of the pool’s age, exposed location and position – Mapei recommended specification of Purtop 1000 N – a two-component pure polyurea membrane which forms a completely waterproof coating, with high chemical resistance, exceptional flexibility and tear strength. Mapei’s proposal covered all aspects of the pool refurbishment, from repairs of the defective concrete using products from the Mapei concrete repair range, through to the Purtop 1000 N system build-up required for the lido.

New Designs Unveiled For Therme Canada Ontario Place

Therme Canada has released its newly evolved design for the West Island of Ontario Place, which delivers its year-round familyfriendly destination attraction alongside four more acres of public parkland. It comes at the same time as Therme Manchester in the UK has received planning approval for its new designs. Both updates followed consultations with the public in Toronto and Manchester. The Therme Canada Ontario Place update features new areas designed with input from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and also incorporating feedback from public meetings, community engagement and City of Toronto planning staff. When complete, the Ontario Place public parkland will become the largest public gathering space on Toronto’s western waterfront. Providing Benefits For Members And The Wider Industry In what has been a hard to predict year for the industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reveals some of the essential work being undertaken behind the scenes by the industry’s associations and highlights courses, awards and more in the months ahead

n the last issue of SPN, I mentioned that there were two water companies with hosepipe bans. I am delighted to say that all of the bans have now been lifted, and the recent bouts of rain are helping to replenish some key reservoirs. We continue dialogue with the water companies in relation to Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) about their interpretation of some critical issues related to the sale of hot tubs and their first fill with water, clarifying if maintenance contracts permit the use of water to top up hot tubs and the threshold needed for medical exemptions for using hot tubs (and pools) for therapeutic use. News is awaited about the updated Water Industry Code of Practice for managing water during times of drought. SPATA and BISHTA have represented the pool and hot tub industry, discussing areas of concern with Water UK, UKWIR and the water companies to try and ensure businesses are not unduly impacted. Moving on to the subject of personnel, following the recent adoption of the Equity (or Equality), Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy by the BSPF, there are plans for this policy to be discussed and adopted by BISHTA, SPATA, PIP and SPATEX over the coming months. Following an initial meeting, a Task Group was formed to raise EDI awareness. Plant Operations (PPO) course with the STA for experienced staff in the pool industry on Tuesday 7 November, subject to demand. The annual Information and Networking Days (and AGMs) for BISHTA and SPATA were held on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September, respectively. Following these annual events, all of the presentations and recordings are made available to SPATA and BISHTA members in the online Members’ Hubs. The BSPF AGM is scheduled for Thursday, 19 October. Why Have An Equity, Diversity And Inclusion Policy? In this issue, the BSPF shares views on why it has implemented an EDI policy, the numerous benefits of one , and how it will be communicated in the news

he BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation) is working with BISHTA, SPATA, PIP and SPATEX to fulfil its role to ‘Promote Pools, Hot Tubs and Allied Wet Leisure’. Through the BSPF (and its members), having a unified voice, where applicable, for the wet leisure industry allows better dialogue with the government and other relevant organisations that impact our industry. It is then possible to ensure an effective communication system is in place to update the industry on upcoming issues. But just as crucially, the BSPF invites communication with its members (listed above), and in the cases of BISHTA and SPATA, also with their members to help to improve and develop the industry through open dialogue with member companies through the work of the committees. One such recent development is the introduction of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policy, a strategic framework for organisations to adopt within their workplace or community to ensure fairness and inclusivity and that it is representative of all individuals regardless of their backgrounds. There are many important reasons for having an EDI policy: • Promoting Fairness And Equality: An EDI policy aims to eliminate discrimination, bias and inequality within an organisation or community. It ensures everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, or other characteristics. • Attracting And Retaining Talent: Organisations prioritising equity, diversity, and inclusion tend to attract a more diverse talent pool. People from various backgrounds are more likely to join and remain with organisations that value their unique perspectives and contributions. • Enhancing Innovation And Creativity: Diverse teams bring a wide range of experiences, viewpoints and problemsolving approaches. This diversity of thought can lead to more innovative and creative solutions, fostering a dynamic and forward-thinking work environment. • Improving Decision-Making: Inclusive environments encourage open dialogue and collaboration, leading to better decisionmaking. The BSPF has now adopted their EDI policy as an organisation with support and feedback from the staff team in Andover: Jan Hardy, Claire Maguire, Jenna Patterson and Debbie Thornton. The policy has been shared with members of BISHTA and SPATA for their own use via the online Members’ Hub, with other related documents to follow as they become available, and to grow the Working Group and plan future meetings to progress with the work on EDI. The policy will also be shared with PIP and SPATEX for their support. Guidance For Companies On The Fair Treatment Of Vulnerable Customers Most of us have preconceptions of vulnerable consumers being the elderly, or people with disabilities – at higher risk of being misled or ripped off. The actual definition is much broader, so how can businesses in the wet leisure industry support this group? Philip LeShirley from Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards guides us through this challenging subject

e all know that old age and ill health can be indicators of vulnerability. If consumers have any additional needs, long-term disability, impairment, illness or age-related conditions, they will be considered vulnerable. Capability is another key indicator – consumers with English as a second language or additional educational needs can also be vulnerable. Not all vulnerabilities are easy to spot though. Bereavement, redundancy, loss of income, divorce or a relationship breakdown can make someone vulnerable, at least for the short term. We call this ‘situational vulnerability’, and the COVID pandemic created many situational vulnerabilities amongst consumers. A lack of support network can also lead to vulnerability. Consumers can also become vulnerable when choosing between complex offers or alternatives or making decisions based on imperfect or unclear information. This market context vulnerability may arise in some of the following situations: • buying a pool/hot tub • assessing how much utility bills will rise when buying a pool or hot tub • calculating maintenance costs of pools/ hot tubs.

WHAT BUSINESSES IN THE WET LEISURE INDUSTRY CAN DO The point of sale is the main risk area for consumers. You should: • Provide information in the most straightforward, most precise possible way. Vulnerability should be considered at all stages of terms and conditions, website and marketing claims development. • Talk to the consumer. Finding the right communication channel for consumers with differing needs is key − consumers with mental health problems may prefer electronic communication, and older consumers may prefer a letter. • Adapt accordingly. It may be apparent that a consumer is blind or does not speak fluent English, so additional support will be required. A consumer may be elderly

and alone – in which case you should offer to involve a family member or friend in pre-sales discussions. You could provide more time for the consumer to cancel a contract (or offer a cancellation period even if not required to). • Implement a vulnerable consumer’s policy. The best solution for the customer should be reached. If someone confirms that they have mental health issues and want to purchase a hot tub, what processes do you go through? Don’t forget that your products can benefit consumers with mental health issues (most of us have experienced these at some stage). Speak to the customer, make an assessment, and ask if they want more time or additional support.

Optimising Pool Water Filtration For Improved Energy Efficiency In this latest issue, Andrew Gaffey, STA Pool Plant Tutor looks at the subject of filtration and how swimming pool operators in mainland Europe are benefitting from more optimised solutions than those often used in the UK

and filters have been used in public swimming pools for over 100 years, and the basic principles of this mature technology are well-proven and understood in the water treatment industry. Some voices in the pool industry say that it’s old technology and that there are more modern methods that can be used, but these often come with higher complexity. Every method has some downsides. On the face of it, sand filtration technology would appear to have developed little over this time, perhaps apart from the obvious modern materials used for media and vessel construction. However, if we look at the practices of some of our European neighbours, particularly Germany and Austria, it becomes apparent that the UK market has been trailing behind for some time. For many UK pool operators, gaining a deep understanding of filtration engineering may not be at the top of their priority list. Filter installation or refurbishment work is often won on cost, rather than performance and long-term durability of the system. There are numerous technologies that are being deployed apace to save energy and carbon emissions in swimming pools, yet sand filtration seems to have been largely overlooked; not many energy efficiency auditors are filtration specialists. So, how could those mysterious-looking domes in your plant room hold the key to highly efficient pool water treatment? Over the past 20 years or so a lot of research has been done on sand/media filter performance, particularly since the advent of Cryptosporidium incidents in pools, and this research has informed the pool industry that there is indeed a range of filter design features and optimisations that can be used to make sand media filtration much more effective and efficient than it once was. If pool filters are undersized and running at higher than ideal filtration velocity, the basic

efficiency of the filtration system will be quite poor. Higher velocity also means there will be less contact time inside the filter headspace for flocculants to work, which prevents fine particles and colloids (most of the pollution in the pool) from being effectively removed. In turn, this leads to much more chlorine being required to oxidise the remaining pollution and organic substances in the pool, also resulting in higher chloramine and trichloramine levels and a lot more bather irritation. This excessive use of caustic chlorine also impacts pH correction and water balance, requiring more acid/CO2 dosing to keep the pH in the ideal range. With this situation, chemical deliveries will be large and frequent, meaning more unnecessary carbon emissions. The traditional way of alleviating the effects of this problem is either by dumping more pool water and increasing pool hall fresh air changes, or by relying heavily on UV treatment to reduce chloramines (whilst also consuming even more chlorine). Whichever way you want to cut it, this style of water treatment regime is very energy-intensive and wasteful. Prevention would be better than a cure! In German and Austrian public pools, filtration plant installers must use filter vessels that are constructed to comply with the DIN 19605 standard. This standard offers a filter design that is hydraulically efficient, both for filtration and backwashing, and for air-scouring prior to backwashing. The larger space provided in the top of the

filter (freeboard area) allows the correct time and conditions for flocculation to occur, permits fast backwashing speeds, and helps keep the filter bed level. The connecting pipework is generally one or two sizes larger than we typically use in the UK, allowing lower flow velocities and better energy efficiency. The pool operator must also operate the filtration and disinfection plant to a high standard, in compliance with DIN 19643. It is interesting to note that this standard requires, for commissioning tests, that the filter is capable of being backwashed at full speed with the top hatch removed, demonstrating that the backwash drain pipe allows water to run freely under gravity without any restriction on the backwash flow. This is a key feature in ensuring the filter media is thoroughly cleaned. There are also numerous other requirements that must be met to prove the hydraulic efficiency and hygienic operation of the pool. With the correct vessel design and installation techniques, sand filters can be highly efficient, simple to operate and maintain, and last for decades. The initial installation cost may be higher, but the treatment efficiency and energy benefits will be permanent. Harnessing Technology To Keep Our Public Swimming Pools Afloat With many facilities in the public sector having an increasingly tough time, in this issue, we place the focus on commercial pool operators and highlight the challenges they are facing, ways in which they can harness technology to secure a more sustainable future plus hear from experts involved with the sector

he new £63m funding package, unveiled in this year’s Spring Budget, was widely welcomed by UK sporting bodies, swimming organisations and private sector firms, which face the major challenge of keeping the nation’s pools afloat. Recent analysis has shown that nearly 400 swimming pools have been lost across England since 2010, with the pandemic and rising energy costs contributing to even more recent closures. Furthermore, based on current pool build trends, the number of available pools could decrease by more than 40% – almost 2,000 pools – by the end of the decade, according to Swim England, the national body for swimming, in its 2021 report ‘A Decade of Decline’. But with the growing popularity of modern methods of construction (MMC) to build or retrofit pools coupled with new pool technologies, local authorities are being offered a vital operational lifeline. Add in a resurgence in swimming’s popularity post-COVID, and the outlook needn’t look entirely gloomy.

SECURING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE The new financial measures to ‘leisure-up’ the UK pool stock were a welcome support to many leisure operators – however the key aim will now be to make facilities more energy efficient and attractive to users, both to ensure their survival and play a part in wider carbon reduction ambitions. The £63m being managed by Sport England,

will allow local authorities to apply for funding for leisure centres with pools that face immediate cost pressures, including operational and maintenance costs as well as energy bills. Jane Nickerson, Swim England’s Chief Executive, said the fund would help facilities become more environmentally sustainable and was an important recognition of the incredibly challenging situation currently facing swimming pools and their value to local communities. “It will undoubtedly make a difference for a number of vulnerable pools as they battle with increased energy costs. Pool owners and operators are committed to reducing carbon emissions and there have been many positive examples from across the country,” she said.

Technology and more efficient ways of working will be a key factor in the fight to keep the UK’s leisure centres afloat as well as making them more sustainable, viable and future proofed. An example of this in action is the ground-breaking leisure facility in Spelthorne, which is on track to be one of the first wet and dry Passivhaus certified leisure centres in the world. Designed by sports and leisure experts GT3 Architects and Passivhaus designers Gale & Snowden, with national contractor Willmott Dixon appointed to deliver the project, Myrtha Pools is responsible for the pool, leisure and wellness elements. (MMC), a Myrtha pool has a 45% smaller carbon footprint than traditional methods of construction – which use tile and concrete – and offers cost savings of up to 20%. It was therefore a solid choice for the pioneering project, which is set to deliver energy and cost savings of up to 60% over the building’s lifecycle, and showcases the impact sustainable technology can have as well as how leisure centres can actively support a local authority’s net zero targets. The team will be closely monitoring the lessons learnt as well as the data generated by the facility, with a view to providing documentation around what is needed to create Passive and healthy buildings within the leisure industry.

UTILISING TECHNOLOGY TO MAXIMISE ASSETS Richard Lamburn, Head of Facilities at Swim England, said: “Swim England does a lot of work in advocating the need for swimming pools and we always aim to evidence the data, such as the increasing cost of gas and electricity, and demonstrate how technologies can reduce energy consumption costs and carbon. “We’ve been at the forefront of looking at different technology such as heat pumps, ceramic microfiltration, and considering the steel versus concrete argument. As a result, this year we submitted data about such technologies to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), in partnership with Sport England. “We were therefore delighted when the

bank of evidence we collated and shared with DCMS directly helped to secure the recent £63m government funding, as we showcased the impact that active investment could have on reducing carbon and energy consumption, rather than just supporting costs. “This should hopefully give operators some breathing room and allow them to look at new ways of maximising their assets to get more people through the door.” Swim England’s ‘A Decade of Decline’ report found that 48% of pools are more than 30 years old. With the resurgence in swimming’s popularity post-COVID, leisure centres are fighting to hold new swimmer’s interest – and spending. Kate said: “There are some real innovations within the leisure sector and now is the time to capitalise on this new technology for the benefit of both operators and end users. “The profile of a pool is hugely important as they need to be flexible in order to accommodate a varying programme of needs. For example, old traditional concrete pools often have a slope gradient, which gives a limited space of shallow water – but learn to swim classes are probably the biggest income generator for pools. Lacron – 50 Years And Counting! With a heritage that traces back for over half a century, filter brand Lacron has been a tried, tested and trusted product within both the UK wet leisure industry and further afield too. Here, we take a closer look at the founding of this iconic filtration brand and its fifty-year journey to the present day

n 1969 Tony Carr was asked by his then fellow director (David Stevens) if he could arrange to have a swimming pool built at their home in Rodmersham near Sittingbourne in Kent. Tony always had an enquiring mind so he decided to research where the equipment for swimming pools were made, as at the time, a private swimming pool in the UK was quite a rarity. In his quest, Tony discovered that almost all the equipment (particularly the filters and alike) were being imported from the USA. Through his research Tony came across a company called Norcal based near Croydon who were one of the main importers and distributers of swimming pool equipment. Tony set up a meeting with the Managing Director of Norcal – a Mr Bill Trusson – and during that first meeting they discovered that they had both lived in London as youngsters and from that moment a real friendship was born. Over a few glasses of whiskey, Bill explained to Tony that the biggest problem at that time was the shipping cost and the delays in receiving filters from America. At the time it seemed that if the domestic market in the USA was very busy then exports to Europe suffered, plus the fact

that the filters being very bulky, they cost a small fortune to ship across the pond, especially if it was by air freight! Tony collected all the equipment from Norcal required for the swimming pool which he project managed and at the same time, he investigated the possibility to manufacture filter vessels in the UK. The swimming pool was completed and Tony had learned a considerable knowledge of how the pool should be constructed and the importance of the hydraulics and filtration system. Tony also researched and found a local fibreglass manufacturing company based on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, and arranged for them to make some prototype filters. The first batch were manufactured in a lovely shade of dark brown with a flat clear polycarbonate lid which was secured by 8 threaded studs. These early filters were often referred to by the pool trade as ‘Chocolate Drops’. In order to increase sales other colours were introduced which

were initially marketed as exclusive lines to certain customers of Norcal who had now become the UK distributor for the product. But what of the name I hear you ask… not long after those first few prototypes appeared, Bill and Tony had another meeting and after another couple of glasses of whiskey they settled on reversing the Norcal name and Lacron was born! Those early Lacron ‘Chocolate Drop’ filters (due to the expansion arising from operating pressures) often developed leaks from the studs and lid area, so Tony and his son Chris regularly spent weekends travelling around England repairing any faulty units as a means to give full customer support. To improve product reliability, manufacturing was taken in house at a small industrial unit near Sittingbourne and a new injection moulded and threaded lid was developed. This proved to be a vast improvement over the leaky flat lids of the early prototypes. Soon after the new Lacron lid was introduced, tooling was made for an injection moulded lateral system which was also very well received by customers. In 1972, as the sales of Lacron filters grew at pace, a new Kent-based home was acquired for both the manufacturing, storage and offices for the company – the ‘Oast House’ on London Road in Teynham. The following year, Lacron filters were exhibited at a swimming pool trade show in Paris and from that show, sales of Lacron filters flourished all around Europe and beyond.

Sadly, Tony Carr contracted cancer in the late 1970s and passed away in 1979. However, Tony’s wife; Tricia, who had been the Company Secretary of Lacron since its inception took over the reins as Managing Director and the company continued growing. Not long after, Tony and Tricia’s son Chris joined the company having completed his apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and assisted in the development of new products and stream-lining production. In 1980 Lacron’s UK distributor Norcal, had a massive fire which more or less destroyed their entire warehouse and stock. Not long after the fire Bill Trusson was diagnosed with cancer and he also sadly passed away. Despite enormous difficulties the company Norcal re-formed in a new premises near Gatwick with Bill’s son – Bob Trusson partnering up with David Mathers. Between them and with support from a few suppliers they expanded their customer base in the UK to be one of the most successful pool equipment distributors. Through the 1980s the Lacron range increased in size where larger commercial deep bed filters were introduced as well as smaller ‘top mount’ valve versions which offered a more compact layout for the plantroom. Additionally, product improvements were made along the way, notably the injection moulded and threaded bulk-head fittings, air bleed caps. As time went by Lacron filters were not only used for swimming pool applications but also for irrigation systems, fish farming, animal pools in zoos, horse rehabilitation tanks and many others. In fact, at one time, water from the Nile in Egypt was filtered by Lacron filters in order to increase the production of crops grown there. Such successes led to the banana plantations of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands being almost exclusively irrigated by Lacron filters using reservoir water. By the late 1980s Lacron filters were not only well known throughout Europe in their new blue and white livery, but they were also supplied to the Middle East and as far as Japan and Australia, namely Weir Engineering. Because of the freight costs of shipping directly to Australia, Lacron began shipping filters in kit form ready for assembly in Malaysia, which ultimately became the start of a long-term cooperation with Waterco

who ultimately acquired Weir Engineering in Australia. The Lacron filter parts once assembled were then shipped across to Australia and as time went on, Waterco became the major supplier to the Australian market. During the 1990s Lacron Technical Director Chris Carr designed and developed new commercial filter product ranges and due to their size, a much larger factory was built adjacent to the Oast House premises which was completed in 1999. The same site is still in use today after nearly 25 years by the new owner of Lacron – Waterco. In 2003 Lacron entered a new partnership with Waterco whose head office

is in Sydney, Australia. The new partnership gave Lacron a whole host of new products to greatly enhance the very popular filter range. Today, although there is still a pump assembly line in operation at the Sittingbourne works, the vast majority of products are manufactured in the Far East and shipped to Sittingbourne in the UK which is now a distribution hub. Plastica Continues To Invest In Future Business For more than 50 years, Plastica has continued to ride the wave of an expanding UK wet leisure industry and in this issue, we take a closer look at how they are investing in machinery and production technology, to better serve the need of their wide range of clients around the country, and further afield

lastica hit their half century last year trading as an independent swimming pool manufacturer. In that time the company has seen many changes and has learnt to adapt and grow according to the financial climate they find themselves in. In the last couple of years, there was a boom in above-ground wooden pools and water treatment due to lockdown. This year, Plastica has seen an increase in commercial enquiries as swimming pool facilities look for energy saving products to see them through the global energy crisis. With the potential for market conditions and demand to change from one year to the next, flexibility has been key to the company’s success. It helps that the company has a broad selection of swimming pool products manufactured in-house. In fact over 80% of their business is from their top-quality products, made in their factory based near the South Coast. Plastica employs a large group of loyal staff with years of experience and pride themselves in their commitment to manufacturing in the UK. One benefit of manufacturing in-house is it keeps the cost lower, ensuring the customer reaps the rewards of a first-class competitively priced product, that is made in Britain and complies with ISO 9001 certified standards, set by the British Assessment Bureau. Investments have been made in various departments this year, with upgraded machinery and tools to help make the production process more efficient. In the engineering department, a Mandrel Bender was purchased which means they can offer longer handrails and ladders. It is also quicker to change tooling to achieve both tight and large radii respectively. It only took the team a single day to

complete their training. Dan, Plastica’s Engineering Supervisor said: “The new machine is more user-friendly. It comes with CAD/CAM software that lets us pre-test a bending program which aids quoting and ultimately, we cut down on waste material. It is also quicker to change tooling reducing lead times and batch sizes which leads to less stock holding freeing up valuable space.” Plastica manufacture as much as possible in-house. They pride themselves in their ability to offer bespoke sizes for ladders, hand and grab, safety and support rails to give their customers a vast array of options. Available in 304 grade and 316 stainless steel. Their custom stainless steel ladders and handrails are suitable for both domestic and commercial installation with optional cross bracing available for extra strength. With the increase in commercial business, a new Welding Bench has also been installed. This has been essential in the production of Plastica’s large modular bench systems, which have been developed to break down into smaller sections, for ease of handling and despatch to be re-assembled on site. Jody, Plastica’s resident tech-wiz and engineer said: “With the development of the new commercial bench system, it was an essential piece of equipment to ensure each individual section was 100% compatible with its adjoining section. Maintaining precise angles and straight linear runs throughout. Coupled with the skill and experience in the production department, the resulting

final product speaks for itself.” During the execution of welded constructions, a very large part of the time, is taken in the preparation of the material for the welding process. The Welding Bench enables the most precise positioning of the components of the structure in the shortest possible time to achieve optimal profitability of the production process. An area of the business that not many people know Plastica manufacture in-house is ABS pipe and fittings. A new Extruder was installed last month, consisting of a vacuum bath, a haul-off, a new saw and tilt table. The start-up time is now faster, with quicker die/pin changes and the whole system is generally more energy efficient. Mark, the Mouldings Manager estimated a 20% increase in production so far. CASE STUDY CANNES HOTEL GETS THE 5 STAR SPA TREATMENT One of GMT Spas most recent bespoke projects incorporated many of the challenges they commonly overcome for their customers, as well as some new ones. The location for the spa was a rooftop of an 8-storey hotel in the heart of Cannes in France. The size of spa was approximately 7m x 4m, this meant the spa would have to be made in two sections, suitable for transport, joining and craning onto the rooftop. The customer’s design included 3 acrylic windows to make the most of the unobstructed views of the Cannes waterfront

and the Mediterranean Sea. These windows also act as in infinity edge, giving a seamless connection with the surrounding views, by displacing the water into a built-in channel that also functions as the balance tank for the spa. The channel is hidden below the surrounding decking to further

reduce the impact of the spa. The project features a roller cover that is hidden under a bench in the spa when not in use. As the spa was made sectionally, the cover and one of the windows had to be installed once it was in position and designing these features to make this possible was an important part of the design and manufacture process. The final stage was finishing the joining and tiling to the same high standard as the work carried out in GMT’s factory, allowing the customer to incorporate it with the surrounding landscaping of the rooftop.

n outdoor pool of any size is an investment, more often than not a sizeable one, so not being able to use it year-round means its full potential isn’t being realised. ools of all shapes, sizes and types have become a popular and welcome addition to many homes over the last few years, but there’s a number of reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity. Perhaps there’s a restriction on space or budget. Maybe there’s aesthetic reasons why a large pool isn’t wanted or just won’t work. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only suitable option, but whilst they can be a lot of fun, they can also just seem to lack that certain something – and often, it’s the ability to enjoy a proper, uninterrupted swim – a fact, which sadly, is rather ironic. Thankfully, the answer to this problem for a number of pools and their owners is a counter-current system, and they’re use and incorporation into pools of a smaller nature, is quickly gaining traction with both the trade and consumers. Of course, their use isn’t restricted to size, but pools with a small footprint is clearly where they are best utilised and they really come into their own with the addition of one of these units. Once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible to swim for as long as a user likes, plus their introduction often provides some additional hydrotherapy options along with some wow factor to impress the kids and guests alike! It is available to either retrofit to an existing pool or has the option to be hidden away behind a bespoke panel system. Whether swimming to compete, for pleasure or to just to stay fit, Velocity’s easily adjustable flow rates enable everyone to jump in and lose themselves swimming against the current. wide and deep, providing users with the full body feeling of swimming in a river current which results in a more natural experience. At its heart, Velocity is powered by a 4kW 5hp inverter driven motor. The hydraulically driven propeller is capable of moving water at up to 1,000m3/h, enabling even the sportiest of swimmers a full sprint work out. The Velocity can reach swim speeds of 58s/100m but its variable speed drive means that users can tailor the swim to suit any workout and swim ability. The speed is fully adjustable via either the main control box or included ip68 waterproof remote control and comes with ten pre-programmed levels which can be also be adjusted within 2% increments to create the exact level of flow desired. The main drive system also has an in-built LED display

showing the flow rate at any given time, to assist with a consistent training programme. With the domestic and international show season just around the corner, we preview two important European industry exhibitions taking place this autumn – aquanale in Cologne, Germany and Spain’s Piscina & Wellness Barcelona – both of which are likely to set the tone for the 2024 season! 20 YEARS OF AQUANALE: ALL THE SIGNS POINT TO SUCCESS With days rather than weeks now left to go before the start of aquanale, all the signs point to it being a success. The international event is primed to bring the who’s who of the industry together in a single location once again. As one of the world’s leading industry events, it is a must-attend for everyone wanting to make a splash in the pool, sauna, wellness and ambience sectors. This is one of only a few places where all market partners get a comprehensive overview of what’s new: the latest technologies, product innovations, process optimisations and visionary planning. aquanale will take place in Cologne from 24 to 27 October 2023 in co-location with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities. The event has been held since 2003 and takes place every two years. Its conceptual sponsor is the German Federal Association for Swimming Pools and Wellness (bsw/Bundesverband Schwimmbad und Wellness e.V.). Around 280 companies from 31 countries will exhibit in an area which will extend over approximately 28,000m2 in Halls 7 and 8 of the Cologne trade fair grounds this year. Around 50% of the exhibitors are based abroad. The largest contingents from outside Germany come from France, Belgium, Italy and Poland. aquanale will present a

full range of topics relating to the latest products and designs for modern, sustainable and innovative swimming pool and wellness facilities. A trade fair is the ideal communication platform to give all market players an excellent and comprehensive overview of new technologies, smart concepts and product innovations. It also facilitates in-depth discussions that generate new leads and establish business relationships. This is reflected in the strong presence of market-leading companies, which take vital inspiration from aquanale. All aspects of the public and private pool, wellness, sauna and spa segments are represented at aquanale in six, clearly defined theme worlds. The congress will cover subjects of interest to the public pool operators target group as well as many technical and topical matters relevant to swimming pool construction companies, planning agencies and firms of architects. The BDS will contribute to the programme with sessions on ‘Further education and training for swimming pool supervisors, lifeguards and pool attendants’ and ‘Modernisation of the profession’. In Hall 8, the European Waterpark Association (EWA) will be presenting a special exhibition on the topic of sustainability entitled ‘Green Waterparks’. The focus will be on innovations that can reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of public pools. In addition, the quality association for European leisure pools and spas will highlight the outstanding performance of its member companies. The good results in the first half of the year mean that the Spanish swimming pool industry is expected to grow by 3% in 2023, according to ASOFAP’s Sector Barometer. This percentage indicates a normalisation of turnover after the exceptional boost in demand experienced during the pandemic. The innovative efforts of the sector, in its commitment to more sustainable, efficient and customised solutions and technologies, focused on optimising the use of water and energy and improving the quality of life of users, will be reflected in the new products that will be showcased at the event. The most innovative and disruptive items can be seen in the Innovation Zone, a space that will be set up by the show and in which exhibitors will be able to highlight their best solutions. Energy savings and the reduction of water consumption, the impact of digitalisation and connectivity on pool maintenance, the importance of architectural design and the creation of healthy, leisure and wellness experiences are all trendsetting. No Diving. No Running. No Bombing. “Public swimming pools are under threat. Should we protect them? Can we protect them?” asks Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast

hose of you who know me will know that I am into fitness. Specifically, I’m a Crossfitter. Keeping up with the Crossfit program means that I go swimming once a week. As I’m one of more than 66 million people in the UK who don’t have access to their own private swimming pool, I swim in a public pool on a weekly basis. And I love it. We have a rich heritage of public swimming baths and it’s one that needs protecting for the good of people’s health, for the benefit of the community and yes, for the good of our industry.

DOGGY PADDLE The first public swimming baths date back to the 17th century but the bathing boom came in during the 1850s. If you picture life in Victorian England your imagination is almost bound to dredge up a few images of bathing beauties in modest swimming costumes and dandies in stripy shorts twirling their moustaches. The baths were a response to concerns about public health and hygiene and they gave people a safe place to learn to swim as well as to exercise and keep clean.

BUTTERFLY The Victorians recognised the fact that swimming was an activity that had benefits for everyone. Those muscle-bound strongmen in their knitted leotards certainly spent hours swimming lengths in the pool. Actually learning to swim became more and more important as the Victorians took to the rivers, canals and beaches in their droves. Public swimming pools served as social hubs bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and swimming was an activity that families could do together. Mental health was perhaps not the hot topic it is

today but the Victorians knew that municipal swimming pools offered a retreat from the daily stresses of life and contributed to improved mental wellbeing.

BREASTSTROKE All the health benefits that swimming can bring remain the same. The benefits of municipal pools haven’t changed, yet the public swimming pool in this country is an endangered species. England has lost almost 400 public swimming pools since 2010. Each closure has its own specific reasons but essentially it all comes down to money. As pools get older, they become more expensive to maintain. Maintenance budgets have been cut over the years and now what needs to be done, can’t afford to be done. Many public swimming pools operate at a loss, relying on subsidies from local governments to stay afloat and local government budgets are under pressure. The rise of private gyms and leisure centres with swimming pools has created competition for public facilities. All these things are made worse by the energy crisis.

BACKSTROKE There is still hope for public pools and swimming baths. In June this year the government launched an initiative called the Swimming Pool Support Fund. The fund provides a total of £60m to local authorities in England to support public leisure facilities with swimming pools. Phase 1 consists of £20m available to facilities with swimming pools where increased costs are leaving them vulnerable to closure. Basically, it’s money to keep them afloat in the short term. The second phase comes in the form of grants from a £40m pot for capital

investment to improve the energy efficiency of public pools in the medium to long term. The second phase of the Swimming Pool Support Fund opened in August to applications from local authorities.

SIDESTROKE Our industry has been looking to be more eco-friendly for many years but the energy crisis has focused everyone’s attention on spiralling energy costs and how to minimise their impact. Technology that was originally designed for private pools can work just as well in public ones. Heat pumps, automation systems and energy efficient pumps that are specified for new builds can often be retro fitted to make an existing pool more efficient. We have exactly the knowledge, products and technology that these public pools and baths are looking for.

FRONT CRAWL Public swimming pools and swimming baths have been an essential part of British culture for generations. Their historical significance highlights their importance in promoting health and wellbeing. They have been around for a long time because they work, they make a difference to public health and community spirit. The future of public swimming pools and swimming baths in the UK depends on grant funding, community engagement, and a commitment to their preservation. It also depends on lowering their energy costs, on making the pools more attractive and more efficient. If we get that right these cultural gems can continue to thrive, providing safe, accessible and enjoyable spaces for generations to come.
