market research & design analysis

market place

product info medical marijuana

competition

audience

market place

One common method of using or taking medical marijuana is ingestion. Eating cannabis raw will not deliver the full therapeutic benefits; The active components must first be extracted into fats, oils or alcohol before ingesting. Medical marijuana is commonly extracted into cannabutter or cannabis infused oil, which is then used to make edible medical marijuana products such as pot cookies brownies as well as savory dishes.

the competition among medical marijuana edibles is very slim. only about 3 companies have the full market share of the available marijuana clinics in southern california. the common denominator amoung them is that they all have terrible packaging, if any at all.

the audience is made up of perscribed patients with the need to relief symptoms caused by AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Glaucoma, Epilepsy, Migrains, Insomnia, Cancer, Anxiety, Alzheimers, Krones Disease, and Lou Gehrig’s Disease. These patients prefer to ingest edible canibus as opposed to smoking.patients that take edible canibus are of all ages and social groups.

the market place of the particular type of product are not open to the public as the use of medical canibus is only alowed by perscription. they are refered to as medical marijuana dispenseries, and they are basically pharmacys that cary marijuana along with non-smokables such as edibles, oils, butters, and body creams.

although the audience should have some type of complication that requires a prescription for medical marijuana, many southern california residents find they require a medical card so that they can have the peace of mind they are purchasing marijuana legally. these excess “patients” do make up the majority in the market share so I need to design with them in mind as well.

product analysis product failure

solution

the product falls short in its packaging. no matter what the form of delivery the edible is, it could be a lollipop, brownie, chocolate, drink, tincture, etc, they all have terrible packaging. brands in the edible community do exhist but they all seem to be produced in a personal kitchen or home. none of the packaging feel sustainable or professional, let alone a branded product line.

produce a product line of medical marijuana edibles with a cohesive design esthetic and eye catching packaging. the products included will be a chocolate bar, lollipop, tincture, and elixer. a display case or box also needs to be designed to present the new line of products in stores.

other than the packaging design, the overall perception of medical marijuna needs to change. there are many patients out there that opt out of using medical marijuana due to the stigma it carries. so my intentions in the design is to take pot out of the pot head’s posession and put it back into the hands of the patient. due to the poor stigma of medical marijuana the demographic of continuous buyers tend to be pot heads. I feel that if a legitimate product line of “edibles were created that patients with real pain problems would utilize edible marijuana instead of pain killers.

pg.7

example these are examples of pharmaceutical pain killers the top is an over the counter and the bottom is perscription.

design research / analysis adjectives

analysis

safe calming sterile sustainable approachable

since the product is a medication I would like to make the product feel safe and calming as well as clean. the edible packaging available now doesnt feel clean or sterile, I want the customer to feel like their medications haven’t been tampered with. the product must also be percieved as approachable, many patients in dire need of these products such as cancer patients stear away from canibus usage out of fear cancer could be worsened by smoking it. Although canibus has been proved to significantlly slow down and weakens the growth of cancer cells, but nonetheless smoking can be out of the question for some patients so a smokeless alternative should have approachable packaging as to not offend of turn off patients.

adjectives safe calming sterile sustainable approachable

additional descriptors apothecary victorian

the design inspiration came from classic apothecary design. the apothecary style is very pleasing to the eye, its approachable and very cool in my opinion. I felt it was a good route to follow if I wanted the product to feel approachable to someone weary of medicinal marijuana but also look apealing to the main market share of “pot heads. to compliment the apothercay dated design i felt it was appropriate to use a very minimal color pallet. along with unprocessed papers for the box and paper used in the packaging.

cannabis indica cannabis sativa cannabis ruderalis cannabis ruderalis is a species of the cannabis family. c. indica and c. sativa are more known of by the culture as they are the plants that produce the most tetrahydracannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana. I ended up choosing ruderalis because it had a medicinal feel yet it was true to the products nomenclature.

package ideas structural design research. I wanted a box that feels structurally sound. I didn’t want it to be a peel apart and throw away type of wrapper. I would like the audience to ponder keeping the package instead of throwing it away. using esko I explored structural packaging possibilities.

chocolate bar the chocolate bar was molded and boxed out of the same materials as the lollipop. the product was formed with MDF as a base to shape the chocolate bar but instead of using polyester resin cast / silicon mold method, I used thermo-forming. thermoforming is much quicker and cost effective way to produce a high quality plastic molds. for environmental reasons the use of a biodigradeable cellulose base thermoforming plastic would be used for mass production. Since it was only available in comercial order size, I opted for PETG which is inexpensive and picks up great amount of detail.

point of purchase display the apothecary box was designed to use for shipping the first order to a medical marijuana distributer, while providing the dual purpous of a point of purchase display as well. the styling of the box was meant to solidify the apothecary design asthetics in the packaging. the apothecary box reassures the correct time and setting I was going for in the package design, while also feeling like old medicine.

pg.53

I chose to use brass finished clamps, hinges, and screws for the box. the box was cut with project lumber, shellacked, oiled and waxed to its finish. another brass elbow was put into the box cover to give it a support to stay open. the last touch on the box was an infographic chart used as a potency guide mounted inside the roof of the box. when the box is open a customer can easily check the potency of the chart while selecting a beverage, chocolate bar or lollipop.
