Notes

After several years of a larger-than-life Darley award ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, this year we make a return to the “simple life.” Don't get me wrong, walking the red carpet and actually being on the famous Dolby stage is fantastic and a memory I will always cherish. However, with the loss of the Sheikh Mansoor Festival as the sponsor, there is not the money to do such a lavish event. And while we will miss the glamour, I think there are a number of individuals who are happy to switch back to a simpler event. This will no doubt be a more intimate ceremony with the focus squarely on the U.S. One of the criticisms of recent years was that the focus was less on the U.S. nominees and more of a focus on the international awards. Those critics should be pleased at the change of venue to Houston, Texas. This issue features one horse being inducted into the Arabian Jockey Club's Racing Hall of Fame. K A Czubuthan was a tough, sound runner who has stood the test of time. He was not a world-beater, but he won more than his fair share over his racing career. He was a solid stallion and even though he passed away several years ago, he is still well-known, well-respected and well-liked. Deb Mihaloff is one of two women being inducted into the Tent of Honor, and we acknowledge her with a brief history of her time in the Arabian racing industry. Deb, along with her husband Alan, has been a force in Arabian racing since its early stages. She is as passionate about the breed as anyone you will ﬁnd and has enjoyed considerable success through many years of hard work. The other Tent of Honor inductee, Denise Gault, will be proﬁled in the next issue. Finally, we welcome Tobi Lopez Taylor on board as a columnist. Her focus will be on some of the historical breeders and horses that have shaped (and are still shaping) the industry today. Tobi is a wonderful writer, knowledgeable horsewoman, and well-versed on the Arabian breed. She is a welcome addition to the magazine, and I hope you enjoy her column.

An Interview with

Deborah Mihaloﬀ

Please tell us a little bit about your history with Arabians. My love and passion came about because my grandmother bred Arabians when I was a child. I remember going to the Michigan State Fair to watch her show her horses. I was given my first horse, a Quarter Horse/Arabian cross named Smokey, at age 17. I bought my first mare with my mother – Neils Creek Rakla, who at the time was in foal to *Asadd++, eventually producing the filly MHF Rafame. That was the start of my breeding program. Eventually I moved from show ring to racing, and we (myself and my husband Alan Kirshner) were brought into the sport by Alec and Louise Courtelis. We went into a partnership on Darley Champion Flaming Tron Ku, and saw the great Wiking when he was initially sold in Poland. Since you started in the sport, Cre Run Farm has become a household name in Arabian racing for many years. Tell us a little bit about the farm. The farm was established in 1986, but over the years has evolved into more than just an Arabian horse farm. Through Cre Run Enterprises, we have established Cre Run Farm, Cre Run Training Center and Equine Lifestyles Arabian Racing Partnerships. The 180 acre facility includes over 60 acres of pastures, a complete reproductive facility and a race training facility with a 5/8 mile track for starting young stock. We stand a variety of stallions and have an outstanding herd of broodmares. What can you tell us about your overall successes? With our overall ownership record, we have won over $2.5 million. As a breeder, our horses (which include Royal

Atheena's bonus and horses bred in partnerships) have earned almost $3.8 million. We are extremely proud of this success. What stallions have impacted the breed for you both in the past and currently? MHF Eclipse, Sam Tiki, Wiking and Monarch AH have been most influential for me in the past. Then Nivour De Cardonne and Dahess are two stallion I have bred to as foundation lines. Crownn Royal, DA Adios, (who sadly died last year) and Our Machine are impactful currently. I know the gene pools are very strong for these three stallions. I am also breeding to other stallions like Madjani, No Risk AL Maury, Hilal Al Zaman, Sadeem and Maymoun Monlau. We have frozen semen available on a variety of stallions who are listed on our website. What has been your proudest accomplishment as a breeder? I’m very proud that our horses have done well both in flat racing and endurance. I feel like my horses have left a good legacy. I always say that you do not own Arabian horses. You are their caretakers, and it has been my honor and privilege to care for so many of them. In turn, we’ve been able to share great moments with family and friends. In the next issue we will profile Denise Gault, who is also being inducted into the Tent of Honor.

e are already over half way through our racing season, and everyone is starting to worry whether they will get all their horses raced before it ends! With 598 horses racing and rather limited numbers and types of races, it is very difficult to find the right race for many horses, both at the top and the bottom ends of the handicap, the best distance or restricted to fillies and everything between.

Nevertheless, January saw some very good racing with interesting results. Dubai’s Meydan the Group 1 Maktoum Challenge Round 1 run over 1600m (8f) was won in a very close finish by the five-year-old filly Wadeeaa (Mahabb – Gaira by Akbar), who was having her first win in UAE since coming from France where she started her racing career. Second by half a length was AF Al Sajanjle (AF Al Buraq – Caline Du Loup by Manganate) owned and bred by Mr Khalid Al Naboodah, who was just ahead of Goshawke (Thoroughbred – Sand Witchh by Burning Sand), whilst fourth was Mawahib (Abu Alemarat – Fraynce by Dormane). These last three returned to the fray in Meydan later in the month for Round 2 of the Maktoum Challenge this time over 2200m (11f), which resulted in a change in the order. Goshawke just managed to keep in front of Mawahib whilst AF Al Sajanjle had to be happy with third. Wadeeaa did not run. Both Goshawke and Mawahib have strong American connections. Thanks to embryo transfer, Goshawke was one of four foals born to Sand Witchh in 2014; three have been winners in UAE.

Their sire Thoroughbred, whose career was a very successful racehorse winning 11 of his 34 races, is by TC Tomtyr, a top class horse in the 90’s, and out of French-bred Vanessa Du Loup. Goshawke’s dam Sand Witchh won 10 of 11 races and is proving an excellent broodmare.

Mawahib The mare Mawahib, has raced consistently in the best company, mainly with colts, and is almost always in the money. She traces in tail male line to Wiking through great grandsire Way To Go, whilst in tail female line her grandam is Fryga (Wielki Raz – Filga by Gokart) an outstanding and proliﬁc mare in all ways. Note that Wadeeaa also has American claims through Mahabb (Tahar De Candelon – Joyzell by JAF Orphatyn), who was very speedy. Mahabb stands at stud in France and has sired 10 winners of races here this season.

He won this race last year and placed in the other two legs, so we will see how they pan out in February and March. In January, there were three important races in Abu Dhabi. The first was the 2200 (11f) Prep race for The President’s Cup, where the Omani raider Jaser (Akim De Décor – Membola by Barkas) just managed to hang on from Abu Alabyad (Akbar – Ortie by Djouran) and Ajjaj (Tahar De Candelon – Shumoos by Djouras Tu). The last race day of January gave us the Al Ruwais, a Group 3 over 1200m (6f) worth Dh 300,000 ($81,521). It RB Lam Tara was an exciting race of 9 runners, of which five were bred in USA, but it was the contest between the four-year-old RB Money To Burn and the older horses that was eagerly awaited. As expected, Money To Burn went quickly Moving to Al Ain, we had Round 1 of the Al Ain into the lead and set a strong pace with ES Ajeeb Marathon series, a 3200m (16f) race worth 110,000 outside her and not far away Wadeeaa set to ($29,891). Round 2 will be run over 4100m and challenge. There was a fine battle in the last 400m Round 3 over 5100m. Such long races bring out with RB Money To Burn hanging on to win from some specialist horses. Round 1 was won by Hareer Wadeeaa by a short head and ES Ajeeb 1.25 lengths Al Reef, giving him three wins in succession so far behind in third. This is the third straight win for the this season. He is by Bibi de Carrere out of Valdora, Majd Al Arab daughter who can only get better a full sister to Falina De Fabries (ex Valina Des with more maturity. This race was followed by Abu Fabries) who stood in USA and proved a very useful Dhabi Equestrian Club Gold Cup 1600m (8f) a sire. prestige race worth Dh125,000 ($33,967) won by AF Al Hazer (AF Al Buraq – Kerouane by Tidjani) who seems to have come back to form. His last four wins were in 2013/14. Second place went to 10-year-old Sharaf Al Reef (Bibi De Carrere – Nomarchie by Djelfor) and third Mukaram (TH Richie – Elmalak Elwaheed).

Second place went to Shamikh Al Wathba, another son of Bibi De Carrere out of Mizzna who is a daughter of the outstanding Unchainedd Melody.

February brings one of the highlight meetings of our season with HH The President’s Cup’s, which has having its 27th running. A Group 1 race, it is run over 2200m (11f) and has a purse of Dh2,500,000 ($679,000). A full field of 16 went to post with several strong contenders including Goshawke, Jaser and Al Shamoos, winner of The Jewel Crown here last November and specially brought over from France for the occasion. She runs in the colours of HE Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Last year’s winner Al Zahir was also in the field hoping to become the fourth horse to win this race twice, but so far this season he has raced well below previous form. Nevertheless with blinkers on for the first time, jockey Jim Crowley sent him to the front early on, and he was never going to be beaten. Al Shamoos was always handy, but it was a big ask for the lightly-raced filly who had not run

since her win here in November. She ﬁnished 2.25 lengths behind, followed by Darius Du Paon (No Risk Al Maury x Saﬁra du Paon), Goshawke and Rmmas (Mahabb x Shamyl) in that order. Al Zahir is owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, bred in France by Xaviere Cauape and trained in Dubai by Al Rashid Al Rayhi. Sheikh Hamdan does not have many Arabians in training in UAE, but he is a huge supporter of Arabian racing around the world, so it is very good to see his colours in front at the winning post. It is also good to see a traditional French pedigree do well. Al Zahir is by Madjani, who won this race in 2005 and 2006, and out of Petite Class who was by Barour De Cardonne from the family of Saponnaire. The evening also included the Listed Arabian Triple Crown Round 1, run over 1600m (8f), restricted to four year olds. The race for Leading Owner continues, and Mr Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda is well in the lead with 31 winners so far, whilst HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is on 19, and the nearest rival Al Ajban Stables is on 9. There are only 9 owners with more than 2 winners! The race for Leading Trainer is slightly tighter with Ernst Ortel, who trains for Mr Al Nabooda, on 30 winners and Eric Lemartinel, trainer at Al Asayl for HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on 24. The countdown is now for the last of big races, principally the Dubai Kahalyla Classic held on World Cup night. Texas Six Shooter & Texas Yellow Rose

A clean sweep for Rosebrook Farm February 2, 2019 was a huge night for the combination of owner/breeder Rosebrook Farm, trainer Jerenesto Torrez and jockey Ernesto ValdezJiminez. They took the ﬁrst two stakes races of 2019, the $20,000 Texas Yellow Rose (L) and the $20,000 Texas Six Shooter (G3) at Sam Houston Race Park, with Dance With Me BW and RB Texas Hold Em, respectively.

First up came Dance With Me BW (Grilla x Shall We Dance BW, by Line Dancer), the heavy favorite,

who went gate to wire and crushed the field winning by 25 ½ lengths in a time of 1:34.88 for the seven furlongs. Uptown Sweet Caroline finished second with WMA Hope in third. They were followed across the line by Texas Style CS, RB Blastfromthepast and Dahnia CS. The first start of the year for the four-year-old filly was also her first stakes win and brought her lifetime record to 2/6(3-2-0)1-0, $27,600.

In the second stakes race of the evening, RB Texas Hold Em (T M Fred Texas x R B Sand Storm, by Burning Sand) settled towards the back of the pack, made a four-wide move to the front and drove to the finish line, finishing 2 ¼ lengths in front of Big Ben AA and Madjestic. Pacesetter Uptown Cruisedirector was fourth, followed by RB Super Duty, Fleet De Sand, Little Sammie SV, and WMA Silver Sand. The final time for the seven furlongs was 1:34.07. The four-year-old colt now has a record of 2/9(4-1-3)2-1, $43,100. He finished last year with a win in the Texas Lone Star Juvenile at Lone Star. This win was his first start of the year.

Longtime owner Mike Economopoulos reminisces about his star

K A CZUBUTHAN HALL OF FAME STALLION K A CZUBUTHAN finished second to many of the elite horses during his seven year racing career, including Monarch AH, Top Flyte, Charlie Valentine+/, Samsheik, and TC Tomtyr (three different times). His greatest second was in the 1990 Armand Hammer Classic when he traded leads in the stretch with NF Proof+/ and finished a close second in a field of fourteen great runners that included Sam Tiki+, Flash Magic, Tikisflaming Jet+/ and Magna Terra Smoky. Every time I watch the video I feel certain that he will hold the lead just a little bit longer. The back story to that race is that Czubuthan coliced five days earlier, and right up to the last minute we thought we would have to scratch him. Though not 100%, he seemed well enough to run; he seemed like he knew the importance of the race, so we gave him his shot. We told Chad Murphy, the jockey, not to push him, just let him run his race. He ran his heart out. We congratulated the winner and tried again. Although Czubuthan is by my first stallion, the *Orzel son, Brusally Orzelost, I was not his breeder. A client of mine leased his dam but was told that she

could not conceive. We tried anyway, got her in foal, and she produced the handsome chestnut colt that we called "Legs." From Arkansas, Czubuthan went to Florida and eventually went into race training. He had two surgeries, first for colic and then for a hernia, over the next year. Both times the doctors said they were "career ending". As a four-year-old, he had his first start in Kentucky. In his second race he hurt himself pretty badly in the gate. Although he finished second, he spent 11 months recovering from his severe injuries. You might say that he encountered several obstacles in his early days. Over a seven year career, his race record was 64(25-16-3)5-10. His best season was as a nine-year-old when he never ran out of the money, 14 (8-4-2). Eight of those races were stakes races. For a long time he held the U.S. track record for a mile and a sixteenth. Legs could go long; he could go short; he could run wire to wire; or he could come off the pace. He ran honest as the day is long. At ten, he blew a tendon, and we retired him to stand at stud. Over the years, he sired some pretty decent race horses, some very good endurance horses and even a dressage champion. The State Stud of Poland imported his semen where he produced several stakes winners. His get, like Czubuthan, are tough as nails. Czubuthan was somewhat of a miracle to even have been born. His dam, Chambray (old lines Pure Polish) was sold to a client of mine, Dan Drewry as an unbreedable mare not able to conceive. We tried anyhow breeding

K A CZUBUTHAN will be inducted to the Arabian Racing Hall of Fame this year, to be presented at the Darley Awards Ceremony in late March. KA CZUBUTHAN’s race record was 64 (25-16-3) 5-10 $109,152. His 57 progeny have run 800 starts, and 39 were winners (32%), and 7 stakes winners (6%). As a broodmare sire, he had 17 producing daughters, with 21 starters of which 13 were winners (62%). Among his best runners were the stakes winners AF GUENIVERE, AF ARABELLA, MW BONNIE Z, MW SCARLET LADY, MW WARRIOR, and MW LADY Z. His best producing daughter was Smokey Rose (1998 out of Sammora, by *SAMBOR), with 5 foals, all to race, and all winners, including SMOKE HOUSE a two time stakes winner, 3 time placed Darley Champion.

her many times to our stallion Brusally Orzelost, a Pure Polish *Orzel son and many times Top 10 race sire. Finally she caught and produced Czubuthan, who was sold with his dam directly after foaling (to Susan Thrasher if Florida who was enamoured by his pedigree). I don't think Czubuthan would have been successful if he had been trained by anyone other than Darley Award winning trainer Robert Knight. He had a special connection to the horse and figured out how to condition him, which was by getting him fit (and I mean fit, fit) then jogging him or swimming him between races. One year in California, his basic training was to swim only. Jockeys had a hard time jogging him as he

developed a little trick to throw riders. As they tried to keep him down to a jog, they had to keep drawing up the reins as be bowed his powerful neck. When they got a little high on him he would ﬂip that neck and throw the jockey. That’s what happened before the Armand Hammer. After he threw Bubba Lewis, he ran back to the barn, and it the excitement that caused him to tie up and colic. We were going to scratch him, but he came out of it and "told" us he wanted to run. I think that seeing him ﬁnishing in second in that race, the way he competed and the other great horses he beat was my proudest moment in racing. The thing that I admired most about Czubuthan (in addition to being such a strong physical

specimen) was his toughness. Despite being told he would "never race again" three times in his life, he managed to run seven years. On the backside, he had the respect of all the other trainers. He was always an “independent” horse and passed his personality down to his babies. It was an honor to be around him. Lastly, I would like to give a special shout out to trainer Robert Knight was an ornery, hard-to-get-alongwith trainer (except maybe for me and Michelle Morgan). He was a great horseman who most people have forgotten. And I would like to acknowledge Czubuthan's breeder, Dan Drewry, who truly believed that Chambray would produce an exceptional horse, despite all the odds of her even conceiving.
