From the Editors I love a new trail, and the best trail for me has always involved a horse. This past year has been a challenge for health and happiness all around the world, and new trails and even old ones have been closed. In this first issue of the Arabian Bloodstock Companion (ABC), we focus on the rebound of many of our favorite equestrian activities such as racing, showing and endurance, which are reopening for spectators, many with limits and qualifications for attendees. In the U.S., Churchill Downs allowed up to 60% capacity in special areas, contractual seating, licenses, memberships and annual tickets to their May Kentucky Derby. In Britain,12,000 people, masked and with negative COVID tests, were admitted to each of the five days of the June Royal Ascot races with the loyal attendance of patron, Queen Elizabeth on the final day. The prestigious 3-day Masters of Chantilly for Show Jumping, located at the 300-year-old Château des Princes de Condé just outside of Paris at Chantilly, France, is being held with ticketed spectators in July. Many world-wide endurance competitions are going ahead with plans in place for protection and social distancing, with the addition of viewing competitions by broadcast. The FEI Endurance World Championships 2021 were broadcast live on-site from the Parco Naturale Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, one of the oldest and largest nature parks in Tuscany, Italy. In this issue, the Arabian Bloodstock Companion will highlight the female line of our athletic Arabians. We look at the continuing reach of two top race-bred mares, Wibwilcca and Fryga, and their progeny that have flourished under the guidance of their breeders and owners. We also celebrate the 2021 Darley Champions as well as the 2021 AJC Racing Hall of Fame and Racing Tent of Honor Awards and don’t miss updated U.S. stakes and racing statistics and international Group 1 race results and statistics. Meet Champion endurance riders, Heather and Jeremy Reynolds with some tips on training horses for distance and how to get started in the sport that offers miles of fun with your horse. Past Arabian Jockey Club President Kathy Smoke shares news on a few of her race-bred horses that in retirement have excelled in other disciplines. Having collected many awards and honors over the years, Georgia-based JAG Arabians talks about what makes a well-rounded partnership between the horse and a young equestrian, and where to begin. Don’t forget to check our A List Reference Guide to be directed to the best contacts for farms, breeders and owners. As with the annual Stallion Guide, the Arabian Bloodstock Companion is published in hard copy and available online in digital format for quick viewing no matter where you are. Stay safe and see you on the rail.

THE WONDROUS WIBWILCCA: 2017 RACING HALL OF FAME MARE
By Tobi Lopez Taylor To judge her only by the exploits of her sire and dam, it isn’t immediately apparent that Wibwilcca (pronounced vi-vil-ka) would be destined for greatness, both on the racetrack and as a broodmare, culminating in her being named a Racing Hall of Fame Mare. Her sire, Wilkolak (*El Paso x Wadera, by Doktryner), won three of his 24 starts in Poland and sired only three foals there before he was purchased by Lasma East at age 12 and imported to the U.S. in 1988, a time when the market for Arabian show horses was collapsing. Wilkolak sired 18 foals in this country. Few of his offspring had show or performance records, and Wibwilcca was the sole racehorse among his get. Wilkolak was exported to China for stud duty in 1993. Wibwilcca’s dam, Wibracja (Elef x Wieza, by Doktryner), born in 1979, was foaled in Poland at Kurozweki Stud. While there, she produced one colt, who was gelded and sold to Italy. The Lasma Syndicate imported her in 1984, and she was purchased for $450,000 at the 1985 Polish Ovation Sale in Scottsdale, Ariz. In the sale catalog, she was described, rather underwhelmingly, as “a nice mare, a typical show mare with nice movement, good formation, size and long neck.” After her importation, she became a halter champion and produced 10 foals. Aside from Wibwilcca, her only other notable offspring was Whazi+/, a gelding by El Ghazi, who racked up six National titles, including U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior to Ride, 14–17. Wibracja also produced a full brother to Wibwilcca—Wibwilk—a gelding with no show or race record. Wilga (Ofir x Jaskolka II), Wibwilcca’s great-granddam in the tail-female line, is the matriarch of a successful female family that has produced Polish Derby winner *Wosk and Racing Hall of Fame inductee *Wiking. Wilga’s descendants include the Polish sire Comet, several Tevis Cup winners and numerous Darley winners and Racing Hall of Fame horses. 4
Wibwilcca’s paternal grandsire, *El Paso, was a passable racehorse, finishing on the board in 12 of 19 starts, and winning three races. (His son *Europejczyk, who had much more racing ability than *El Paso, won the Polish Derby and Criterium Stakes.) However, as breed historian John Schiewe has pointed out, *El Paso had more success as a broodmare sire of racehorses than he had as a sire. To cite just one instance, his daughter EW Rema produced six race winners, including the stakes-winning Hall of Fame Mare HT Sarah. We have to go back a bit farther in Wibwilcca’s pedigree to find horses that demonstrated exceptional racing ability. *El Paso’s sire, Czort, for example, was a son of the stakes-winning broodmare Forta, whose 18 runners were all winners, including two Polish Derby winners. Czort himself was a two-time winner of the Criterium whose offspring won the Criterium three times, the Polish Oaks three times, and the Polish Derby five times. *El Paso’s dam, Ellora, a daughter of Witraz, produced his full brother, Elfur, a Polish Derby winner with eight other stakes wins. Ellora was a full sister to *Elzunia, the granddam of *Etiw, whose get include the notable racing sire SW
and Ariel. *Elef ’s dam, *Elizaa, was by the important racing sire *Pietuszok, whose offspring include Orla, Polish Triple Crown winner; her full brother, *Orzel++, U.S. National Champion Racehorse and Hall of Fame inductee; and *Wosk, winner of the Polish Derby. Like *El Paso, *Elizaa was also out of Ellora, whose contributions have been discussed previously.
Wibracja (*Elef x Wieza) , the dam of Wibwilcca, sold for $450,000 at age six in the 1985 Polish Ovation Sale in Scottsdale, Az. Wibwilcca was by far her most successful offspring. Photo by Sparagowski.
Dawid (whose son, Magna Terra Smoky, was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame). Another full sister to Ellora, Celina, was a race winner and dam of the stakes winner Chazar, who sired Polish Oaks winner Elodia. Wibwilcca’s paternal granddam, the race winner Wadera, was by Doktryner, a stallion not particularly known for transmitting racing ability, although his unraced son Ferrum (out of the above-mentioned Forta) did sire the Polish Oaks winner Cerkaria. Another son of Doktryner, Arbor, won two stakes in Poland and was exported to France to stand at stud. Wadera was out of Werbena, who won the Polish Oaks. Werbena’s sire, Wojski, also counted among his get the stakes-winning mare Fanfara, dam of the stakes winners Flet and Fanfaron; the Oaks winner Fregata; and Falset, winner of the Criterium. On the distaff side of her pedigree, Wibwilcca’s maternal grandsire, *Elef, ran for four seasons and won nine of 39 starts, including two stakes wins. One of his sons, Traf, won the Polish Derby, and then was imported to the U.S., where he won the Armand Hammer Classic Stakes. *Elef ’s sire, the race-winning Almifar, was out of the influential broodmare Arfa (a full sister to *Bask++ and Bandola), whose seven foals to race (by six different sires) were all winners. Among them were two Polish Oaks winners, *Abhazja and Harfa, and the stakes winners *Arwistawa
Both of Wibwilcca’s granddams were by Doktryner. Her maternal granddam, Wieza, was out of Wieszczka, a winner of two races. Geyran, Wieszczka’s sire, was a son of the famous Kaszmir, known as the “Man O’ War of Poland” for his stellar race record of 17 wins and one second in 18 starts. Wieszczka’s dam, Wilga, is among the most influential broodmares in Polish breeding. From her descended the legendary Polish sire Comet, several Tevis Cup winners, and numerous Darley award winners and Racing Hall of Fame inductees. As will be recounted below, the numerous victories that have already accrued to Wilga’s damline— that of Gazella II (born in 1914)—are steadily being added to by Wibwilcca and her progeny. Wibwilcca’s journey to racing greatness began when well-known racing breeders Dan and Claudia Spears, owners of Diamond Crest Arabians in Willis, Texas, purchased this bay filly as a yearling from her breeder, Teisan Auto Company Ltd. Wibwilcca made her racing debut in 1998 at age four. She ran 14 races that season, winning three and placing third in the Texas Oaks. The following year, she improved a great deal. She won five of her 10 starts, including four stakes wins, and earned a total of $39,750. That clinched the Darley Champion Older Mare title for her in 1999. In 2000, she was in the money in five of her 10 starts, adding another stakes win to her credit. The next year, she hit the board in nine of her 11 starts. In 2002, her fifth year on the track, she ended her career on a high note, winning the Texas-Bred Fillies Stakes. She compiled an enviable race record of 46(12-125)6-6 and earnings of $105,775 and went on to her next career—broodmare. Her first six foals were bred by the Spears. Wibwilcca’s first foal, Vibvilcca, a chestnut filly by Virgule Al Maury (Kesberoy x Valse Du Cassou), arrived in 2003. Stakes-placed Vibvilcca ran for three years, with four wins in 28 starts and earnings of $42,508. She had has had no foals to date. Wibwilcca was bred back to Virgule Al Maury for her 2004 foal, a bay filly named DC Willful Spirit, 55
who became her dam’s first stakes winner when she ran off with the Texas Yellow Rose Stakes in 2008. DC Willful Spirit spent two years on the track, and earned $52,610, with a record of 15(5-4-0)2-2. As of this writing she has produced six foals, including a race winner, Highh Spirits, by Burning Sand. Other offspring of hers have been exported to Qatar. In 2005, Wibwilcca was bred to Patriot Missle+/ (Wiking x Toppers Starlight), producing DC West Wing, a stakes-placed grey colt who won two of 19 starts and finished second in the Cassels Bruczest Stakes. Two years later, Wibwilcca produced DC Well Done, a chestnut filly by Dinamite Dare (Calin de Louve x Noorr), who started twice, finishing fourth both times. She had a brief career as an endurance mount, with one 50-mile completion to her credit. DC Well Done has had more success as a broodmare. Her first foal, the chestnut filly Rich Sin (x TH Ritchie), won two of five starts in the U.S., including the Texas Oaks. In 2019, Rich Sin was exported to the UAE. Another foal out of DC Well Done, a chestnut colt named AA Rich Mother, won the Emirates Breeders VIP Stakes. Wibwilcca’s next foal, the 2008 bay filly DC Willeys
Song, was by Doran SBFAR. Racing for four seasons, DC Willeys Song compiled a record of eight wins, six seconds, and five thirds from 26 starts. The winner of four stakes races, including the Buzz Brauninger Arabian Distaff Handicap (G1) and the H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies’ IFAHR Cup, DC Willeys Song was, like her mother, named Darley Champion Older Mare. She retired with earnings of $124,255. She has produced the filly Uptown Lady Arabella (x Burning Sand), a stakes-placed winner of two races, and Arabella’s full brother, Uptown Ringoffire, born in 2018, who has yet to race. In 2010, Dan Spears, co-owner of Diamond Crest Arabians, passed away at age 61. There was a gap of four years between the birth of DC Willeys Song and Wibwilcca’s next foal, the grey colt Uptown Dannys Boy, who was named for Spears. The colt, by Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz x Du Smaragda), became his dam’s third stakes winner with his victory in the Jerry Partin Memorial Cobra Sprint, and won a total of six of his 11 starts. In 2016, he was exported to the UAE. In 2013, three years after the death of her husband, Claudia Spears sold a group of horses, including the 19-year-old Wibwilcca, to newcomers Jon and Krista Henningsgard of Waller, Tx. As Jon told Arabian Finish Line in 2018, having the opportunity to buy

Al Maury). He ran for two seasons, winning three races and hitting the board in all of his starts, earning a total of $28,450.
Now in the ownership of the Henningsgards, Wibwilcca was again bred to Burning Sand, producing a 2014 grey filly named Uptown Sandy Girl. Currently in her fifth season of racing, Uptown Sandy Girl is by far Wibwilcca’s most successful offspring. She has won 15 of her 28 starts, 12 of them stakes. Her three Grade I stakes wins include the Buzz Brauninger Arabian Distaff Handicap (twice) and the H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Sprint Cup. Her earnings as of this writing are $287,890. For the Henningsgards, one of the highlights of Uptown Sandy Girl’s career came in 2017, when she won the Texas Lone Star Juvenile Stakes the same night that Wibwilcca was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame. Appropriately, Claudia Spears was there to be a part of the celebration. After winning Darley awards as a 3-year-old, 4-year-old and older mare (twice), Uptown Sandy Girl was presented with U.S. Arabian racing’s highest honor—she was named 2020 Darley Horse of the Year, and she isn’t finished yet.
Wibwilcca’s final foal, the 2017 bay filly Uptown Fancy Pants, by Madjani (Tidjani x Salama), is unraced as of this writing.
In 2015, Wibwilcca produced Uptown WTF, a bay gelding by No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy x Nectarine
Wibwilcca, now 27, is living out her days with the Henningsgards. The Arabian Jockey Club rules state that, to be eligible for induction into the Racing Hall of Fame, a mare “will have had to race for three years with at least three stakes wins, and foaled at least three stakes winners.” Clearly, Wibwilcca is more than deserving of joining this elite group. Not only was she highly successful on the racetrack, but she also has demonstrated that she could produce high-quality foals, including a Darley Horse of the Year, from a variety of different sires and bloodlines. Tobi Lopez Taylor is a former columnist for Arabian Finish Line, an award-winning writer and editor, and the author of two books on the horses and breeding program of Ed Tweed’s Brusally Ranch. She is currently completing a book about *Naborr and his legacy. 7
Fryga
One Mighty Little Mare By Pamela Burton 4-2-3, including three stakes races and $51,143 in earnings. In 1995, she won 4 out of 7 starts, including the coveted Gladys Brown Edwards Cup (Gr.1) and was awarded 1995 Darley Champion Older Mare. She was retired from racing with an overall record of 8/72(20-16-14)11-19, and $247,704 in lifetime earnings. In 1999, she was inducted into the AJC Racing Hall of Fame. And here the future of this tough little mare gets hung in the balance. Due to gross negligence, the 123 horses in the Burger’s care, including our heroine Fryga, were seized by the State of Florida and consigned to auction. There was undoubtedly more The little Polish race mare tasted early success, winning races and gaining awards, but through no fault of her own, she and 122 stablemates were slated to be sold at public auction. Fryga was foaled on 21 March 1987, at the Florida farm of Betsy and John Burger from the pure Polish match of Wielki Raz and the imported *Filga. Fryga, considered small in stature, was large in attitude, seeming to channel the racing attributes of her Polish grandsire, Gokart (Partner x Gomora, by Comet) bred by Janow Podlaski State Stud. Gokart won 3 of his 15 races and was 1982 Swedish National Champion Stallion before he was imported into the U.S. in 1983.

Directed towards racing in 1990 as a 3-year-old, Fryga’s fast turn of foot put her quickly on the boards with a 3-3-2 record for her first 10 races, taking home $34,741 for the year. Being much the best filly that year, she won the Darley Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Award at the 1991 Darleys.
trauma for the horses in this process than we will know, but the future fate of this game race mare eventually came to the attention of Arabian breeders and owners, Dianne Waldron, Xavier Moreau and Willie Linahan. The three formed a partnership to rescue her from the Sherriff ’s sale.
She raced like she loved the wind.
“I purchased Fryga because of her excellent race record,” said Waldron. ”I started my breeding plan by choosing breeding mares with solid race records,
As a 4-year-old, she had 15 starts with a record of 8
In 2003, Fryga delivered one of her most well-known colts by Dormane. Fryvolous was a handsome, well-mannered bay and seemed to know when he had won. As a 3-year-old racing in the U.S., Fryvolous placed in 3 of his 6 starts. In 2007, he was a stand-out, winning 6 of his 8 starts, including two G1 races, quite the best record for the year, assuring the Darley Champion 4-Year-Old Colt award and the award for Darley Horse of the Year. Fryvolous arrived in the United Arab Emirates by February 2008 and had his first win by December after coming second to Mizzna in a November outing. He won the next 6 of 7 races, the sixth race being his highest prize money race, beating some of the best Arabians colts of that year in the March 2009, $250,000 Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr. 1). These were his best racing years, and he never again achieved the easy money, but he was raced until 2014. Above and next page. then breeding winners to winners. This has worked, and now, we have many good mares that are homebreds. My plan was to send Fryga to breed to the top stallions in the world.” Waldron subsequently bought out the other partners. Installed in France, Fryga is credited with nine foals from 1998 through 2008. Her foals and the foals of her offspring have established Fryga as a true Blue Hen, a mare that has proven her worth from generation to generation. And here we look at some of her more important racing progeny. 2000 Frynch (by Dormane) - The first foal Fryga produced was the chestnut filly Frynch, by Dormane. Frynch raced in the U.S. from 2003 through 2006 with her most successful year in 2004 when she won 5 out of 11 starts and $186,255 in prize money. All totaled, she had a race record of 28(8-5-5) including 4 stakes races, topping her dam’s earnings at $249,756. “Frynch was one of my most successful mares,” said Waldron. ”I still own her, and she is in France at le Haras du Grand Courgeon.” 2002 Fynge Benefit (Dormane). This stallion raced from 2005-2009 with earnings of $161,939 and a win in the Drinkers of the Wind Derby (Gr. 1).
2004 Frysk Me Now (by Dormane) This grey stallion raced in the U.S. from 2007 to 2010 with a record of 32(7-6-3)0-6 and earnings of $91,641. He was exported to the UAE in 2011 where he raced until 2013. 2008 Frynzy (by Dormane) She was a race winner in the U.S. and producer of RB Grynade (by Burning Sand) racing in the UAE from 2017 to 2021, and RB Blyng (by Majd Al Arab) multiple Graded-placed winner in the U.S., exported to the UAE. Meanwhile The mare Frynch has had a most extensive influence in the Arabian horse world, producing at least 20 babies from 2007 to 2015. She was exported to Qatar in 2015, but later was repurchased by Waldron who brought her back to France where she is until this day. Frynch has had babies every year and now reproduces via embryo transfer with two babies expected for 2012. Her most notable foals to date are: 2007 Rich Frynchman (by TH Richie). Grade 1 winner in U.S., exported to France. 2009 Wycked (by Burning Sand). This chestnut mare was a Grade 3 stakes winner in the U.S. from 2012 to 2013, Darley Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, exported to the UAE. 2009 Rich Frynd. (by TH Richie). Full sister to Group1 winner Rich Frynchman. This chestnut mare did not race much, but has delivered successful babies onto the racing scene, including: 9
2014 RB Hot Date (Burning Sand x Rich Frynd) exported to the UAE in 2019 after earning $36,630 from 2017 to 2019 in the U.S. and was 2017 Darley Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. 2016 RB Rich Lyke Me (Majd Al Arab x Rich Frynd ) This grey stallion was a multiple Group winner racing from 2019 to 2021 in the U.S. with 16 starts and 7 firsts, earning $133,040. He was named Darley Champion 3- and 4-Year-Old Colt. 2011 RB Frynch Broad (by Madjani). Grade 2 stakes winner raced from 2014 to 2016 in the U.S. with 19 starts, giving her 5 firsts and earnings $64,098. The chestnut mare was awarded Darley Champion 4-Year-Old Filly based on wins in the Delaware Park Oaks and Texas Oaks; exported to UAE. She is also starting to produce quality racehorses as well. 2016 RB Frynchh Dude (Baseq Al Khalediah x RB Frynch Broad). The 5-year-old RB Frynchh Dude is showing talent now in his UAE race career with a G1 win over Brraq on 28 January 2021 and a G2 win on 17 December 2020 over Amwaj, both at Meydan. Earnings through 2020 are $120,988. 2017 RB Lara (Munjiz x RB Frynch Broad). This filly is a multiple race winner and Group 3-placed against colts in the Texas Six Shooter (Gr. 3). She was also a 2020 Darley Champion nominee. 10
“Just Try It” - Passion key in breeding and racing Dianne Waldron explains: “I was always horse crazy in a family that was not into horses. There was an old grey mare in our Florida neighborhood, nothing much to look at really. I really wanted her, and finally my Dad said if they would take $25 for her, I could have her. Well, they did, and it made me happy. After I had seen two Arabian Stallions in a local parade, I fell in love with Arabians, and I eventually bred my old mare to each of them. Waldron remembers: “Years later when I was married, I had gotten a Quarter Horse to ride and started in endurance in my Western saddle. I loved it and saw that I needed an Arabian to be serious about competing. “In 1979 I got an Arabian.” Dianne traded a horse she had for a Bezatal daughter that was big and tough enough to ride in endurance, and she changed her saddle. Endurance was gaining importance, and she and husband Bill had fun and met many wonderful connections while riding together. “Just try it” is a good description of how Dianne has developed her racing success. Timing is everything. In 1983, when parimutuel racing came to Florida, she was ready to try her hand at it. Bill was a farrier and not allowed to get a trainer’s
license at the time, so Dianne got hers. “We just took the horses we had out back and raced them,” said Dianne with a smile. “The Bezatal endurance mare, Ei Talquahjamasna (Hannah), was the only mare we had. She won her first out against all boys at Ocala. At Tampa, I raced her in an open race against the best stakes colts in the country, and she got third. The next week, we ran again, and she beat all of them!” There is nothing like the thrill of winning and breeding Arabians was the next step. Breeding winners to winners, Waldron’s RB (Rosebrook Farms) brand has proved a successful venture and a legacy that keeps on giving.
Fryga was recognized with three Darley Awards and received the 1999 ARC Racing Hall of Fame Award. Her progeny has also won a total of eight Darley Champion Awards and her daughter Frynch will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021. Total monies from the top earners in the Fryga dynasty is estimated at least $785,000 with international earnings estimated but not verified.
RB French Dude ((Baseq Al Khalediah x RB Frynch Broad) is now a Group 1 winner in the UAE.
How to Read a Race Record
In the U.S., race records for Arabians are commonly written as follows: 1/6(1-2-3)1-2, $99,999. These numbers mean, left to right: 1 - the number of years the horse raced 6 - the total number of starts 1 - the total number of first place finishes 2 - the total number of second place finishes 3 - the total number of third place finishes 1 - the total number of stakes wins 2 - the total number of stakes places (second or third place finishes) $99,999 - total earnings

Determined to be a Jockey By Pamela Burton Determination is a good quality in a jockey, and Kirsten Swan can claim a large portion of it. “I’ve been working with horses my whole life,” she said. Swan has been immersed in the horse world since she was born. If she were a horse, one would say she had a racing pedigree. “My parents are jockeys,” said the slight lady with the sweet smile. “I’ve been running around the racetrack since I was five years old. My dad is Scott Spieth, and he still race rides. My mom, Rhonda Spieth, retired a few years ago.” Swan grew up on horses, showing saddle seat on Arabians, barrel racing and following her parents to the track. “I started galloping at a farm down the road from us when I was 15. The next year I started galloping at Thistledown Race Track near Cleveland, Ohio. At 17, I got my jockey’s license across the border at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia, because in Ohio you can’t get a jockeys license until you are 18. “Throughout all of this, I still went to school. I actually got high school credits for galloping horses. My junior and senior years, I would go gallop from 6:00 am until 10:00 am, then drive back to school by 11:00 am for my two classes, then head back for races at Thistledown and Mountaineer at night. I would do it all over again the next day. I ended up graduating a semester early in my senior year so I could go ride at Penn National for the winter season. “When I came to Delaware and saw they had Arabians racing, I knew I would get along with them. They are such a smart breed even when they are ‘corky.’ My first racing Arabian was Spin 12
Doctor for Kathy Smoke. He is such cool horse. “I’ve always wanted to train and ride my own horses,” continued Swan. “I feel that I am an average jockey so why not ride my own horse when I have the chance? Not very many states allow a trainer to be jockey and owner. Luckily for me, Delaware and Ohio are states that do allow it.” At 30, Swan admits that this is a tough life, but she does not shy away from the struggle. Her training barn now includes four thoroughbreds and the Arabian Colors in Motion, and she gallops horses for some of the other trainers. Trainer Lynn Ashby has worked with Swan for many years. In a 2016 interview, Ashby said of her, “That girl can do it all. She is amazing. She rides, she flies with the horses. She will make an excellent trainer.” “Sometimes you think you can do it all by yourself but you can’t,” said Swan. “It really does take a team.” Kirsten has not stopped with racing. She also takes her horses to “fun” shows and has taught Colors In Motion to jump. Through June 2021, Kirsten has competitively ridden Arabians for nine years. Her mounts have started 272 times with 40 wins, 38 seconds and 44 thirds for a top 3 finish percentage of 45%. Her horses have earned $606,959, and she has ridden the likes of Darley Champions Our Princess, Thess Is Awesome, Colors In Motion and Quick And Rich. She herself won the Darley award for Outstanding Jockey in 2014. Left to right: Kathy Smoke, Jeremey Castro and Kirsten Swan. Photo by Paul Smoke.

The Arabian: True Versatility “Arabian Horses - The Ideal Partner for Young Equestrians”
by Jessica Gilker and Megan Gilker Thomas

There is an Arabian horse for every discipline, experience level and age. Young equestrians are vital as they are the next generation of horse owners, sponsors, horse trainers, mentors, and coaches. J.A.G. Arabian Sport Horses’ owner and breeder, Kathy Gilker, got her first horse at nine years old. Her family supported her love even though they were not horse people. During Kathy’s 40 years with Arabian Horses, she has bred and developed Arabians and Half-Arabians with the goal of producing versatile, athletic perfor14
mance and family horses. Thanks to her breeding program Kathy’s twin daughters, Megan and Jessica, had the opportunity to grow up and enjoy Arabian Horses and with Kathy’s support, achieved success in many disciplines with their Arabian Horses. Finding your Arabian Horse Arabians are the perfect fit for young riders with their average height usually between 14.2h and 15.2h. Experience and temperament are important factors to consider in the selection of your Arabian Horse. A senior horse with a long career, no matter the discipline, may require some joint maintenance, but can be a safe, confidence builder for a youth rider. Pony Club recommends that a horse and rider’s age should equal at least 20 years old, but even adult amateurs find a teenage or senior horse is a great match if the horse is still happy in its work. Leasing a horse is a wonderful option prior to the long term commitment of purchasing as it allows youth riders and their parents to experience a higher level of responsibility and learn to properly care for a horse. Creating a Connection In building one’s partnership with an Arabian Horse, it is important to take advantage of instruction by well trained, positive and supportive mentors 13
and coaches as well as additional resources such as clinics, webinars, and books. Proper ground work, in-hand work, and a solid relationship with the horse translates to better communication and teamwork between a young equestrian and their Arabian Horse while riding. Groundwork is an important part of being an equestrian - not only for training and physical conditioning - but for getting to know the horse one-on-one by learning the horse’s individual character and natural way of going. A young equestrian should understand and participate in the care and maintenance of their horse: grooming, bathing, applying basic first aid, feeding, stall cleaning, tack cleaning, etc. is part of understanding good horsemanship. Finally, cross training and learning different disciplines helps to create a foundation for a well-rounded equestrian. Sharing the Arabian Horse The Gilkers have received many awards and honors over the years, including Regional and National titles. Kathy Gilker’s JAG Royal Knight is the 2017 Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Open Competition Award winner for his lifetime of achievements on the open circuit against all breeds with all youth riders. JAG Lady Pegasus+/ was the 2018 AHA Ambassador Award winner for being a positive Arabian horse ambassador to the community through Girl Scouts, 4-H, and mentoring new riders.

Need a Performance Horse? Try a Race-bred Arabian by Kathy Smoke
“Performance is the name of the game for MoKee Arabians. Breed a performance horse with racing bloodlines, and I can guarantee there will be multiple after-racing disciplines for a second career.” Kathy Smoke Spin Doctor 2007 (Falina des Fabries x Smokey Rose). Spin was a multi-race winner and graded stakes-placed runner. Spin Doctor has proven very successful in the Sport Horse arena, and he is a National and Regional Dressage Champion (2017). He is now in a Para-dressage program for physically disabled riders.
As adult amateurs, Megan and Jessica share their passion by volunteering within their equestrian community. They participated in the 2019 BreyerFest and the 2021 Georgia Horse Fair where they were able to introduce the Arabian Horse to thousands of individuals. Jessica is currently working towards her United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Bronze Medal with the family’s Arabians and Half-Arabians. In 2020 Jessica was the Georgia Arabian Horse Association President and received the AHA Club Level Volunteer Award. Under Jessica’s leadership in 2020, the Georgia Arabian Horse Association (GAHA) received the AHA Club of the Year Award with a clean sweep in all club project categories. In 2017, Megan Gilker Thomas was AHA’s eighth nationally ranked Adult Amateur. In 2018, she received the GAHA President’s Award Recipient for her volunteer work and received her USDF Bronze Medal - all on Arabians owned by Kathy. Kathy is a current volunteer board member of the

Historical Note In a class of 50 horses, Spin Doctor won the title in the 2015 US Arabian National Sport Horse Champion Training Level Dressage. He also went Top Ten In-Hand Hunter Type Stallions in his first time out in the Sport Horse National Show in North Carolina. Owned by Paul and Kathy Smoke, Spin Doctor was trained and ridden by Ryan Yap. Yap explains the classes at the Sport Horse Show: “The Arabian Sport Horse division is where horses are shown in-hand individually on a triangular pattern and evaluated on conformation and movement at the walk and trot, under saddle, and in traditional rail classes. The more advanced Sport Horse Show Hack is a rail class similar to the English Division’s Show Hack.” The flashy chestnut is well suited to dressage according to Yap: “He is very athletic and trainable with correct gaits.” Yapp is based in Elgin, Illinois, from April through November, then moves his base to Wellington, Florida, from December through March. Bred as an athlete, Spin Doctor is from the last crop of French bred stallion, Falina des Fabries. He earned over $53,000 in 3 years of racing. According to Kathy Smoke, “His record is 3/13(6-1-1-1)0-1. He ran sec ond in the Grade 2 Bob Magness Memorial Derby at Delaware Park, and fourth in the Grade 1 UAE Presidents Cup at Churchill Downs, with maternal brother, Smoke House, in third place.
Mizz Skarlett (pictured above), 2007 (Makzan x Ima Poka Dot) Skarlett has training in jumping, reining, barrel racing and trail riding. She never got quite tall enough to race but is bringing smiles and help to many disabled children in a therapeutic riding program in Michigan. They love her. 16
Opus Two, 2014 (Thoroughbred x ES Ornetta, by Monarch AH). Opus Two thought racing was boring but fell in love with fox hunting, jumping and endurance. He also played around with cattle penning. “Many others have gone into the endurance world and one became a very competitive barrel racer,” said Smoke. Kathy Smoke was the Arabian Jockey Club President from 2007 to 2017 and was awarded the AJC Tent of Honor Award in 2017. Mokee Arabians webpage: mokeearabians.com
The Fun of Long Miles with Your Horse By Heather Reynolds
Have you ever had the desire to ride your horse through remote and scenic landscapes, or go on an organized marked trail with veterinary assistance, while also being able to be competitive without being judged, or just being a part of a like-minded group on trail with your horse? If you answered yes to any of these, then you might want to look into endurance riding. Endurance riding has many things to offer. There are intro level rides of 10-15 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 75 miles and even 100 mile rides. There is no age limit for the rider, and it’s one of the only sports where a 5-year-old and an 80-year-old can compete side-byside. It’s a true family sport and it’s not uncommon to see three generations of family riding side by side down the trail. The sport is a zero drug tolerance competition between horse and rider teams. You have six hours to complete a 25 mile ride, 12 hours to complete a 50 and 24 hours to complete a 100 mile ride. There are mandatory veterinary check points with timed stops to rest and eat. At these points, your horse must be “fit to continue” by veterinary standards, including no lameness for you to be allowed to continue. This also applies after you cross the finish line to receive your completion status. The trails are marked with colorful surveyor’s ribbons, and each trail loop is a new color. It’s common
to have additional signage for concerns along the way. The sport is open to all breeds of horses, mules and even zorse. At the event, camping is a fun part of the weekend. It is common to see living quarters trailers, cab-over campers on top of trucks or tents. The horses might be tied to the trailer, put in a portable pen, electric corral (not all rides allow this) or high-lined. It is a very fun thing to go be a part of. The day before the ride you have to have the ride veterinarian “vet your horse in.” This is where they will examine your horse and ask you to trot the horse in hand to make sure your horse is not lame before being allowed to start. Also, the night before the event there is a riders briefing and this will go over the trail markings and loop distances as well as how long your “hold times” will be at your vet stops. A typical training schedule for a new endurance horse, (but not new to riding) would be Tuesday/ Thursday, 6 to 8 miles, then Saturday OR Sunday 10-15 miles. This would be done at the walk and trot with a small amount of canter. As your horse gets more fit, they will eventually be able to do the longer mileage option of the two numbers I listed, and they would be able to trot the majority of the time. It takes many years (3-4) to train a horse to do a 100mile event safely. Most riding horses that are sound and not too young can easily go to an intro ride with very little extra preparation. If you are interested in finding out more on the sport and possibly going to an endurance ride to watch, volunteer or ride, you can contact the American Endurance Ride Conference, aka AERC at AERC.org or 530-823-2260.
Jeremy and Heather Reynolds had shipped the racebred Treasure Moments to Pisa, Italy in early May 2021, as he was chosen as part of the U.S. competition Team for the 2021 World Endurance Championship. Due to one of the U.S. team horses showing a fever in the offsite stabling before the race, the entire team decided to withdraw for safety sake; truly a disappointment for all. When the team was then invited to compete in the 29 May, Italian Endurance Championship, they went. Treasured Moments (DA Adios x Hidden Treasure) and Jeremy won the160 km CEI 3*, also the WEG Test Event for 2022. Jeremy and Treasured Moments, who was a winner on the racetrack before becoming an endrance horse, followed that with a win in the 100-mile Tevis Cup. By DA Adios+/ out of Hidden Treasure, by RD Five Star, she was bred by Cre Run Farms and has amassed 1,650 miles, 27 rides, 24 completions and 3 best condition in U.S. races. Jeremy and Heather Reynolds coach endurance riders and take horses for endurance training. The can be found June to October in Greenwood, CA, and November to May near Ocala, FL.

RAa CING TENT OF HONOR 2021 INDECTEE MICHELLE MORGAN Michelle Morgan is a modest individual who has worked tirelessly in the Arabian racing industry. Along with husband Mickey Morgan, they owned and operated Mandolynn Hill Farm for decades and have been a force in their home state of Texas and around the world. How do you feel about being inducted into the Hall of Fame? I feel like its an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since I started being involved with the Arabian horse in late 1980’s, I have met so many people that have a passion for this horse, have devoted their time and energy for this breed, so to be picked out of all these people is an honor. What are some of your fondest memories of your time in Arabian racing? I have so many good memories. There are the people that I have met around the world. I would not have known them if not for the Arabian horse. Breeding, raising and then watching a horse I bred win a race is always a thrill. What is it about Arabians that you like so much? The Arabian horse is a special breed - beautiful, smart and loyal to the person that cares for it. I love that there are so many different disciplines you can do with the Arabian horse. What are your future plans in the industry? My future plans are to race my Arabian horses, contribute what I can to the Arabian Racing Cup board and Texas Arabian Breeders Association board and continue to ride my horses until I can’t throw a leg over the saddle. Krista Henningsgard was emotional talking about the win for her and her husband’s beloved mare. “We are so pleased with Uptown Sandy Girl being named Darley Horse of the Year for 2020,” said Krista. “She has overcome so much adversity and comes back even stronger every year. It’s emotional for us because she wants to run so badly; however, if she is not 100%, she always lets me know. When the time comes to call it a day, we know she’ll tell us. In addition to this year, she was also nominated for Horse of the Year in 2019. The Henningsgards have been breeding and racing Arabian racehorses under their black-and-white Uptown Arabians colors since 2010, and are quickly becoming one of the top Arabian race breeders in the country, with an impressive foal-to-champion ratio depicted in its third Darley Award this year for Darley Breeder of the Year. In fact, the enthusiastic couple were the owners and breeders of two additional nominees this year as well – Uptown Cruisedirector, nominee in the Older Horse category, and Uptown Lady Arabella, nominee, and champion in the 3 Year Old Filly category. All three “Uptown” horses will run in 2021, as well as some up-and-coming young horses in training. But all eyes were on the star of 2020, Uptown Sandy Girl, a seven-year-old grey mare by Burning Sand and out of the Hall of Fame mare, Wibwilcca (by Wilkolak) who has earned a whopping $285,890 and won 15 of her 27 lifetime starts. Uptown Sandy Girl also fittingly won the $30,000 Darley Distaff Sponsored by Lufthansa Cargo, run at Sam Houston Race Park less than two horses before she was named 2020 Darley Horse of the Year. Uptown Sandy Girl won under trainer Rachelle Russell and was ridden to victory by jockey Anardis Rodriguez. The Darley Distaff was followed by the $30,000 Darley Sprint Sponsored by Lufthansa Cargo, which 27
became a duel of Darley 4 Year Old Colt Champion RB Rich Lyke Me, and the veteran 3-time Darley Horse of the Year ten-year-old, Paddys Day, who both battled in a 15-length lead over the field. But it was Paddys Day once again to win in the final strides under jockey Shane Laviolette for trainer Todd Fincher and owner Jane R. Teutsch. Even after the Darley Awards concluded, the excitement continued with the final hour of bidding in the ARC Stallion Auction, which featured ten breeding lots of world-class Arabian racing sires including: Al Mouwaffak, donated by Al Shaqab Easter Man, donated by Allegro Arabians Gazwan, donated by Al Shahania Stud Grilla, donated by Billie Glosser Hilal Al Zaman, donated by Al Nujaifi Racing Majd Al Arab, donated by Umm Qarn Nizam, donated by Umm Qarn Mared Al Sahra, donated by Al Shahania Stud Seraphin Du Paon, donated by Al Asayl Racing Sir Bani Yas, donated by Al Asayl Racing
The popular breeding auction consistently raises significant funding that goes to support the ongoing programs of the Arabian Racing Cup, including the ARC Breeders Incentive Program and the Darley Awards. It was the ideal conclusion to wrap up an exciting Darley Awards day, celebrated by Arabian racing enthusiasts throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. “There isn’t a grander celebration of the Arabian racehorse and its people than the Darley Awards, and this year was no exception,” said Michelle Morgan, Past Chief Steward of the USA Darley Awards’ Arabian Racing Cup (ARC) and owner of Mandolynn Hill Farm located just outside Dallas, Texas. “Even virtually, it was a weekend full of inspiration, fun, excitement, and renewed passion that came from reliving moments and being reminded why we do what we do, regardless of winning a Darley award, or not. It’s what we strive to do.” The 35th Annual Darley Awards will return to Houston in 2022.

Ex-Racehorses Dominate Major Endurance Events Ex-racehorses have been further proving themselves on the endurance scene. The overall winner of the 100-mile AERC National Championships was Gwen Hall and Sizedoesntmatter (Line Dancer x Contemporary You, by Wiking) who won twice on the racetrack. He was bred by Joe Powell. The Kaolean Machine (Kaolino x Wikings Delyte, by Wiking) was bred by Jim and Sue Meyer to be a racehorse, but he never started. With Marvin Brangman aboard, he earned Best Condition at the event. 36
Then at the 100-mile Tevis Cup, Jeremy Reynolds and Treasured Moments (DA Adios+/ x Hidden Treasure, by RD Five Star, pictured far left) won after also winning an event in Italy. She was bred by Cre Run Farm. Arabian Finish Line and Horsereporter would like to thank Shadwell Arabians and Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his enthusiastic and unwavering support of Arabian racing worldwide. Sheikh Hamdan was introduced to horse racing as a student in the United Kingdom, and he established his own racing stable in 1980. From there, the Shadwell blue and white colors have had a presence in many of the world’s top racing and breeding jurisdictions. He will be missed.

We are extremely happy to hear that his daughter, Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum will be carrying on the Shadwell tradition. We wish her continued success.
