From the Editors With more than 30 years each in the equestrian world of journalism, Stephanie and Pamela have a wealth of information about one of their favorite subjects, racing Arabians. Pamela has spent many of those years in one of her favorite places…at the side of the track, listening to the roar of the crowd, in the flinging dirt of passing hooves, taking photos. Stephanie has often been behind the scenes, or behind the computer keyboard, writing about the sport while occasionally covering the races in person. We are excited about the new look of our book, the 2021 Stallion Guide. You may have noticed some changes in the past two years as we have brought the annual Guide into an updated A-4 format which is easier for both national and international designers, and we are now reporting the race statistics on the stallions in an easy to read style. Our main goal is to showcase some of the world’s top racing stallions for your breeding choices. No matter what bloodline you are looking for, the 2021 Stallion Guide has a top roster of winning Arabians that will compliment your breeding goals. We highlight stallions standing in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, with many on both sides of the water available through frozen semen. The pedigrees show that the many of the original bloodlines, ex: Monarch AH, Burning Sand, Saint Laurant, and Wiking work so well together. The Breeder Focus, showcasing some of the important stud farms that bring you the winners, is a feature you should not miss. This year we spotlight Joe and Betty Gillis’s extremely successful private stud, Allegro Arabians in the U.S., and Al Shahania Stud, the owner of many top International racing Arabians located in Qatar. Don’t miss our statistics pages and Grade and Group 1 winners. The International Reference Guide will give you a quick view of who and where to contact. We want to introduce our much sought after new companion journal, the Mare, Foal and Farm Issue that is slated for late Spring release. What mares produce these fabulous runners, and what up and coming babies are available? We look forward to showcasing the distaff side of these athletic Arabians. Both magazines will be published in hard copy and available online in digital format for quick viewing no matter where you roam. Stay safe and see you on the rail.

Paddys Day

Living Legend - Paddy's Day Brings home the Preakness Win

Class Longevity Endurance What are the qualities you look for in a breeding sire? Excellent bloodlines? Good bone and a solid mind? A three time Darley Award winner? A multiple Grade One stakes winner? A horse that has made more money than any Arabian Race horse in USA history? I think we might have what you're looking for! 2021 Breedings $5000 Call Jane Teutsch at (719) 332-4343 Offspring also available.

Legendary!

Paddy's Day (Burning Sand x AK Loretta) takes home the 2020 $100,000 UAE President Cup (G1) – America’s richest Arabian race of the year – win on Pimlico’s Preakness Day card in Baltimore, Maryland. An unforgettable race, his win cemented his status of a modern day, and perhaps historical, legend in American Arabian Racing! The seasoned 9-year-old bay stallion, now boasting lifetime earnings of $660,005 (and well over $1 million if one includes his bonuses earned from the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Triple Jewel series’), hugged the rail through the stretch, never far back, and was up late dueling in the stretch with rising star, Uptown Cruisedirector. The two battled gamely in the last furlong, but it was the veteran Paddys Day that, in a display of heart and gutsiness that he’s well known for, determinedly pulled away to win by ½ length with a final time of 1:54.66 going 1 1/16 miles in a large and highly competitive field of twelve horses vying for victory in what is arguably the most significant race of the year for USA Arabian racing. The win marks Paddys Day’s second consecutive of 2020 in only three starts, his second time winning this race (he also won in 2016 at Churchill Downs), and his 27th lifetime win out of a total of 48 starts in an impressive six-year career that spans thirteen different tracks on multiple continents. “For the only horse in America that earned the honor of ‘legend in his own time,’ he proved once again that he is the legend,” said his owner/ breeder, Jane Teutsch, who owns the horse once again with her husband, Ray. This was the second time a race for purebred Arabian horses was staged at the world-famous Pimlico Racecourse on Preakness Day, though this year was markedly quieter than in 2012 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Only 300 owners were allowed on the esteemed racetrack for the day.

How to Read a Race Record

In the U.S., race records for Arabians are commonly written as follows: 1/6(1-2-3)1-2, $99,999. These numbers mean, left to right: 1 - the number of years the horse raced 6 - the total number of starts 1 - the total number of first place finishes 2 - the total number of second place finishes 3 - the total number of third place finishes 1 - the total number of stakes wins 2 - the total number of stakes places (second or third place finishes) $99,999 - total earnings

Stakes Races Definitions

A stakes race is short for “sweepstakes” and defined as a race in which owners pay a fee to nominate, enter and run their horses. To attract the best possible eligible runners by increasing the total purse, “added money” is put up by the track racing association or sponsor. Nominations are usually taken months in advance of the race and entries close at least 72 hours before the running of the race. In the U.S., stakes races are further defined by quality as determined by a graded-stakes committee as grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and listed stakes races. In other countries, the equivalent are called group 1, group 2, group 3, and listed stakes races. In all cases, grade/group 1 races are the most prestigious (and often have the highest prize money) followed by grade/group 2, grade/group 3 and listed stakes races. 22

Sand to make it big. He earned over $90,000 at the track, which included a win in the 2015 HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup S. (Gr 1) at Sam Houston. He is now siring some of their up and coming racehorses. That exciting grade 1 win was just the beginning of what was to be a huge year for the Gillis’s. It also saw the debuts of Jewell AA, a gray colt by the name of Easter Man and a chestnut filly named Dream Pearl+/ (more about them in a minute). Jewell AA (Burning Sand x Triumph Pearl, by Seyvilla Triumph) won 3 of 5 starts as a 3-year-old that year, never finished out of the top three, and won 2 stakes races on her way to earning Darley Champion 3-Year-Old Filly honors. Dream Pearl+/, foaled in 2011, was actually Jewell AA’s older full sister. She did not race at 3, but instead burst onto the scene as a 4-year-old when she won 4 of 6 starts and was in contention for a Darley award. She got better as she got older and became a force on the California Fair circuit. Through 2020, Dream Pearl has amassed a record of 16 wins from 38 starts, 9 stakes wins and earnings of over $154,000. She was named Darley Champion Older Mare in both 2016 and 2018. Through the magic of embryo transfer, Dream Pearl has had foals while she’s still racing. Her first two 24

(a colt and filly both by No Risk Al Maury) will be 3-year-olds in 2021. The other big name that started racing in 2015 was Burning Fleet’s younger full brother Easter Man (Burning Sand x Angel Proof, by NF Proof). He had 3 wins and 3 seconds from 6 starts, won the DIAR Texas Lone Star Futurity, placed in 2 graded stakes, and took home the Darley trophy for 3-Year-Old Colt/Gelding. Easter Man continued to race extremely well from 2016 through 2018. He was Darley Champion 4-Year-Old Colt/Gelding the following year, but he kept missing out on the coveted Horse of the Year first because of his rival Paddys Day and then due to his stablemate Quick Sand AA. Persistence paid off, and in 2019 Easter Man won 5 out of 9 races, won 3 stakes, including the grade 1 HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Amethyst Jewel S. and finally notched his Darley Horse of the Year award (along with Champion Older Horse.) “In this sport, you’ve got to have heroes for people to get behind,” said Gillis when he accepted the gold statue. “Easter Man was one of the heroes. He is a very popular horse in the Arabian racing community even though it took him several hard-earned years to reach this achievement. He has definitely earned it. Easter Man is a special horse.”

NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED Two other stallions that also helped keep the Gillis’s at the top of the earning charts were Sand Victor and Quick Sand AA. By Burning Sand out of Triumphs Silkie (by Seyvilla Triumph), Quick Sand AA was a very good 3- and 4-year old, but at age 5 he was unbeatable. He won all 6 of his starts including one of the most thrilling races ever held in Arabian racing. Dead heats are rare. Dead heats in a grade 1 race are impossible…until they aren’t. He and stablemate Easter Man dead heated for the win in the Hundred Years Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan S. (Gr 1) at Sam Houston Race Park. It was one of the most exciting moments in Joe and Betty Gillis’s long racing career. That year Quick Sand AA also won the prestigious President of the UAE Cup S. (Gr 1) under the lights at historic Churchill Downs and was clearly the Darley Horse of the Year. Through 2020, he has won 14 races, 7 stakes, and earned almost $325,000. One of the best horses to never win a Darley award was Sand Victor (Burning Sand x Vague De Gemme, by Baco Du Cassou). Racing from 2014 through 2019, much in California, he won 11 races and over $170,000. He was often racing against his stablemate Dream Pearl, but did go to Abu Dhabi in 2016 to compete in the Jewel Crown (Gr 1). A Racing and Breeding Dynasty Discussed in this brief article are but a few of the horses that have raced in Joe and Betty Gillis’s red and white Allegro Arabian silks. Mainly trained by Jerenesto Torrez, there are many more that helped them along the way to winning Darley Champion Owner and Breeder from 2015 through 2018. Many of these outstanding horses are now in the breeding shed looking to bring the next generation of champions to the track. Producing about 10 foals per year, Joe and Betty Gillis aren’t looking to go away any time soon.

California rivals Dream Pearl+/ (above) and Sand Victor (left) were both bred by Joe and Betty Gillis. 25

Al Shahania Stud

By Pamela Burton THE BEGINNING The Al Thani family’s Arabian horse vision now extends from the deserts of Qatar across the world to the top breeding, racing and show grounds in the USA. As a bit of history, H.H. the Amir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani was the ruler of Qatar from 1995 until 2013. His fourth son, Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani from his second wife Sheikha Moza, is now the eighth and current Amir of Qatar. Arabian horses were always a large part of the Qatari history and tradition, and in the 1980’s, another member of the ruling family, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani began the

transformation of the piece of land outside Doha that would become home to Al Shahania Stud. Hand-picked by Sheikh Mohammed, the foundation of the stud were French-bred Arabians — the mare, Akie Croix Noir, and the stallion Djendel. These lines continue a prominent position in the breeding of the farm, and Sheikh Mohammed is still totally involved with breeding and training. Al Shahania Stud today has one of the world’s leading Arabian horse racing programs, having bred and raced over 100 Arabian racing Group 1 winners globally, with a presence also in the Arabian show world, and about 20% of stock in racing Thoroughbreds.

Methgal winning the Qatar International Cup (Gr1) in February 2020 at Doha.

Headquarters for the International operation is located at the Al Shahania Stud, an oasis of over 100 hectares of green turnouts and grassland pastures, large and secure stabling for over 200 horses, an equine training swimming pool, and miles of trails including a private 2000 meter training track. Dean Lavy is the Manager of Global Operations. He brought to the farm his 26 years of breeding farm management experience working at the Al Maktoum’s Gainsborough Farm in Kentucky (1986-2012). Lavy said he started as a groom and moved through the farm system, advancing from Yearling Manager to General Manager in the last years there. Lavy works closely with Al Shahania Director, Abdul Rahman Al Mansour, to plan and maintain the Global unit. “Qatar is our hub, and most everything comes through Doha for approval,” said Lavy. “I arrive at the farm by 7:00 a.m. and leave around 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. I see and discuss the overall management of the horses, construction projects ranging from paddocks, new stables, racetrack, housing for staff, landscaping, and pretty much anything that has to be done concerning the property. Also, I oversee the breeding contracts, horse purchase contracts, review all procurement, travel of horses for sale or purchase, and help organize the breeding for both our Thoroughbreds and Arabians. The list goes on and on.”

Breeding is the foundation and the engine of Al Shahania, and the breeding decisions for Arabians are decided in house by Sheikh Mohammed, Al Mansour and Lavy. For Arabians, the matings are done with the aim of producing horses that can stay 2,000 meters and above, as these are the distances of the biggest races. The Thoroughbred program began in 2010, and in 2011 Al Shahania purchased the French stud farm of Haras des Cruchettes with over 160 hectares of lush grassland located in the heart of Normandy. Here they keep both Arabian and Thoroughbred stock and also have horses in Doha, France, England and America. “Most of our racing stallions stand in France, but we offer a few in Doha,” said Lavy. “We might move stallions from France to Doha and back, and Normandy has an on-site full collection center. Our new Stud Manager in France, as of December 1, 2020, is Arnault Leraitre.” Lavy talks about the Al Shahania Arabian breeding philosophy. “Al Shahania has successfully used the Amer line, and this will continue to be a major part of the pedigrees going forward, as this line produces most of the classic winners. Burning Sand again has done very well and has a large influence on the program, but offers a different type, typically more of a sprinter than a miler horse.” 27

“The mares we use are mainly retired racing and show mares, and 98% of our horses are homebreds. The mare’s role is huge as we only purchase outside if a horse is very special. Julian Smart’s name is synonymous with Al Shahania winners. There are a number of trainers that work for Al Shahania in Doha, but Smart trains the majority of the Doha Arabians, usually around 50 horses out of the 75 to 80 horses in training at once, according to Lavy. Smart moved to Canada from England as an 18-yearold and showed some talent for training Arabian race horses. He soon headed to where some of the top Arabians were running, first training in the UAE, then to the Royal Cavalry of Oman, before moving to Qatar in 2009. In his first year with Al Shahania, he struck gold when Jaafer won the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr 1), then followed with Jaafer’s win in the 2011 Group 1 HH Amir’s Sword. Smart has won the HH Amir’s Sword seven times since 2012 for Al Shahania, including three wins with Ebraz (2017, 2019, 2020), and two with Gazwan (2016 and 2018). He admits that having good breeding is paramount and credits the farm’s select breeding for the high quality of horses he continues to train.

2015 by winning his first Group 1, Shadwell Dubai International Stakes at Newbury in July, before placing second at the 2015 Qatar World Cup (Gr 1) in Paris. In February of 2016, he won the 2400m Group 1 HH Amir’s Sword in Doha, which he again won in 2018. The highlight of 2017 was Gazwan’s fighting win under Maxime Guyon at the Chantilly-based Qatar World Cup (Gr 1) over Yazeed, second, and stablemate Ebraz, third. In 2018, Gazwan won two out of four Group 1 races, but a fourth place at the Paris Longchamp Qatar World Cup (Gr 1) behind stablemate Ebraz in third, warranted a bit of time off. Gazwan’s race record is 15 wins out of 30 career starts. In fitting fashion, Gazwan won his last Group 1 race where it all began, in the 2019 Shadwell Dubai International Stakes at Newbury, UK. Check out the race video here: https://youtu.be/oXlxO1sL_mU. He was retired to stud at Haras des Crushettes before the 2019 Qatar Arabian World Cup. EBRAZ

GAZWAN Ebraz (2013 - Amer x Massamarie, by Tidjani) was already showing strength and talent in his second year running in 2017, producing a Group 1 win at the 2400m HH Amir’s Sword in Doha. He finished that year with a second at the Goodwood Qatar International Stakes (Gr 1), and a third under Christian Demuro at the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr. 1), staged that year at Chantilly due to construction at Longchamp. By 2018, he had taken a second to Gazwan in the HH Amir’s Sword (Gr 1), a second at the Goodwood Qatar International Stakes (Gr 1) to Muraaqib, and then placed third at the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr 1).

Smart has had a roster of continuing stars at Al Shahania. Gazwan (2011 - Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel out of Akie Croix Noire) was a standout, winning races as a 3-year-old in Doha. Gazwan continued in 28

DOHA TRIPLE CROWN Smart made his 2019 - 2020 season unforgettable when he became the first trainer to win the triumvirate of Qatar-sponsored races with Ebraz. 2019, August, Goodwood, 1600m

2019, October, Paris Longchamp, 2000m 2020, February, Doha, 2400m In February 2019, Ebraz won his second Group 1 HH Amir’s Sword, then fought for the win at the July Goodwood $488,000, Group 1 Qatar International Stakes, winning by 2 3/4 lengths. In October, at the Paris Longchamp Group 1 Arabian World Cup, again with some of the best racing Arabians of the year, jockey Maxime Guyon held Ebraz at the rear of his competitors until after the final turn when he directed the Ebraz attack, pulling ahead in the last 100 yards with a gutsy drive. In February 2020, Smart, Guyon and Ebraz made an invincible team to capture their third Group 1 HH Amir’s Sword in Doha. All three races must be won by the same horse in order, first at the Qatar International Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse, followed by the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Paris Longchamp, then the February, Doha HH Amir’s Sword. Winning this trifecta of Group 1 Champion races made Ebraz the first horse to achieve the Doha Triple Crown and win the $1 Million Bonus. Ebraz ended 2020 with a top rating of 128, with a total race record of winning 16 out of 33 starts. Lavy said that Ebraz will continue to race in 2021 as long as he is happy and healthy. “This is part of the formula for these horses, to train them slowly for the longer goal. This horse exemplifies the breeding of Amer in the pedigrees. This has been an excellent

cross with French mares as is now going forward with the Burning Sand cross as well. The Amer line is definitely the classic distance type of horse of 1850 meters and above, and the Burning Sand crosses are typically milers and below, but with an occasional one that goes further.” UP AND COMING Lavy noted a few Al Shahania horses to watch in 2021. Ebraz will be eight and is in his prime. Also showing talent are the coming 5-year-olds Methgal (TM Fred Texas x Theeba, by Amer), winner of 4 out of 9 starts, and Mon’nia (Amer x Margouia), winner of 6 out of her 8 starts; both started racing in 2019. Check out the video of Methgal winning his second out at DIAR International S. (Gr 3) 7/20/19: https://youtu.be/dAmV8KZtdfY. While so much of the world has changed due to the pandemic, things keep moving forward at Al Shanhania. “Really not a lot has changed, but it cut the 2020 season off short, with a longer break in racing,” said Lavy. “There are also some travel restrictions for horses and people coming for the international racing in December, but hopefully for the big weekend in February things will be better. Qatar has done very well controlling the virus, keeping large groups of people safe distancing, and the number of people coming and going from outside with mandatory quarantines put in place. Overall we have felt it has been under control in Doha.”

No matter the year, Dianne Waldron (second from left) of Rosebrook Farm brings home numerous championship trophies. For the racing year of 2019, she was once again named champion owner and breeder, the fourth time she has been victorious in each of those categories. She is flanked by ARC Stewards Michelle Morgan (left) and Garrett Ford (right). Daughter Leah Bates is to her right along with four of her grandchildren.

The Perennial Leading Sire

It’s hard to remember a time when Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz x Du Smaagda) wasn’t the leading sire. He topped the rankings once again by earnings and number of wins. His leading earners were multiple Darley Champions Paddys Day and Uptown Sandy Girl. Dahess, who stands in France, finished second by both earnings and number of wins. Returning to the top of the broodmare sire list by earnings is Virgule Al Maury, based on the success of Paddys Day (out of AK Loretta). He tied with Kador De Blaziet as leading broodmare sire by number of wins. 50

NEGATIW A Positive Source of Racing Prowess By Tobi Lopez Taylor Skowronek’s male line is known more for transmitting ethereal beauty and floating gaits than for racing speed and stamina. But one of Skowronek’s descendants, his grandson Negatiw, passed on some unexpected racing talent to his offspring that continues to this day.

ish-born Skowronek and out of Nasra, a great producer whose ancestors had been imported from the desert by Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt. The Russian studbook noted that horses of the Naseem line “are as a rule [Saklawi] type, medium height…with good movements and medium racing abilities.”

Negatiw, a grey colt born in 1945 at Tersk Stud, in what was then the Soviet Union, was the result of an outcross. His sire Naseem, bred by England’s Crabbet Stud and sold to Tersk in 1936, was by the Pol-

Negatiw’s dam, Taraszcza (Enwer Bey x Gazella II, by Kohejlan), born and bred at Janow Podlaski State Stud in Poland, was one of several prizes of war taken by the Russians from Poland during World War II. At

Negatiw (Naseem x Taraszcza, by Enwer Bey) was a significant sire of athletes in numerous disciplines, with National winners in English pleasure, Western pleasure, driving, and park. Photo by Dr. Krasnikov.

Tersk, she proved to be a successful broodmare, producing seven race winners and two stakes winners. Negatiw stood about 15 hands and was described by the director of Janow Podlaski as a “highly noble” horse with “comparatively correct limbs,” “big and beautiful” eyes, and “elegance and refinement.” He raced as a two-year-old at Rostov-on-Don, where he had two wins and two unplaced finishes from four starts. According to an article in the February 1976 issue of Arabian Horse World, a full brother to Negatiw named Namet II won a 50-kilometer endurance test in “one hour 38 minutes, 8 seconds ahead of Thoroughbreds and Partbreds.” As will be seen later in this article, a number of Negatiw’s descendants have ompeted successfully as endurance horses.

Enwer Bey produced one winner apiece. Four of Negatiw’s sons stood at Tersk: Patron, Suvenir, *Salon, and *Naborr. Patron (x Provincia, by Priboj), born in 1957, started five times, won three races, and finished second twice. (This stallion is not to be confused with another Russian-bred stallion named Patron [by Aswan], who sired the well-known *Padron.) He then had a career in the circus until 1971. Patron sired only three foals, all born in 1973. His daughter Nepokornaia was a race winner, and his son Neon won three races out of 19 starts. His third foal, Komplekt, did not race. However, Komplekt was said to be extremely athletic and was later named Reserve Champion Stallion at the Salon du Cheval.

Naborr (Negatiw x Lagodna) was a sire of race and stakes winners in Poland, including Polish Derby winner *Mirzaz. Photo taken by Victor Kerr, courtesy of Ann Hernandez.

Negatiw had 12 foal crops during his stud career in Russia. From 31 total runners, he sired 19 winners and one stakes winner. It is not surprising that eight of the 19 winners were out of mares by the great sire Priboj or his descendants. Negatiw’s single stakes winner in Russia, Pantokrin, was out of the Priboj daughter Provincia, whose dam was by Lowelas. Notably, Lowelas daughters produced three of Negatiw’s winners. Daughters of Korej produced two winners by Negatiw, a daughter of Skrzyp produced two winners, and dams by Ofir, Fetysz, Posejdon, and

Suvenir (x Sonata, by Skrzyp), born in 1957, had two wins and one second-place finish out of seven starts. Of his 37 foals, two raced but were non-winners. None of his sons were used for breeding at Tersk. The Russian Studbook put it bluntly: “Suvenir did not give good [progeny].” Suvenir’s full brother *Salon, born in 1959, became world famous as the sire of *Muscat, U.S. and Canadian National Champion Stallion. In Russia, *Salon ran 19 times, with one win, five seconds, and three thirds. He sired 35 runners at Tersk. Twenty-two of 53

them were winners, and one—Persida (x Perikola, by Knippel)—was a stakes winner who triumphed in the prestigious Grand Prix Stakes for fillies. Another *Salon daughter, *Pustinia (x Ptashka, a full sister to *Pietuszok), set a speed record for fillies at 1,000 meters in 1967. *Pustinia’s grandson RD Five Star carried on the tradition by setting two track records himself. Negatiw’s best-known son is *Naborr (x Lagodna, by Posejdon), born at Tersk in 1950. *Naborr ran eight times as a two-year-old, with a record of two wins and two fourth-place finishes. At the 1954 All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow, when Negatiw was 14 and *Naborr was four, Negatiw was named Champion and *Naborr was awarded the Reserve Championship (known as the Certificate of First Degree). *Naborr sired two crops at Tersk, in 1955 and 1956, for a total of nine foals. Of these, only two raced: the colts Santim and King. Santim (x Sakmarya, by

Partero (*Espartero x Djamiljah, by Prokaznik), whose sire *Espartero was a Swedish National Champion Stallion, was a European racing champion and leading money winner.

Sadyk Pasza) was his sire’s only winner. However, it was King (x Kompositsia, by Korej), with a record of a second and two thirds from seven starts, whose bloodlines took a very circuitous route to the winner’s circle. King was licensed for breeding in 1958 and appears to have stood at the Dashyuz Stud in Azerbaijan, which at that time was part of the Soviet Union. The Dashyuz Stud, located about 600 miles from Tersk, has long been engaged in raising the local Deliboz breed of horse, which reportedly tends to have an “unstable temperament.” Purebred Arabians have been introduced into the Deliboz breeding program at Dashyuz; one wonders if the Negatiw horses, with their generally quiet, even dispositions, were useful in correcting the temperament of the Deliboz. At any rate, King’s only purebred foal, a colt named Maktub, was born at Dashyuz in 1970. Maktub was purchased by well-known Dutch breeder Robbie DenHartog, who imported him to the Netherlands, where he sired a number of foals, including the mare Aphrodite. Her daughter Sonata R was sold to the U.S., where six of her seven foals were winners, including the stakes-placed Chow Mane (by *Wiking). Both Negatiw and *Naborr were eventually sold to Poland, with the son arriving several years before the sire. The managers of Tersk, who viewed racing success as a proxy for breeding success, had been underwhelmed by *Naborr’s performance on the track and in the breeding shed.

Faraonson (*Faraon++ x Skora, by Skorage), a son of race winner *Faraon++, was a versatile athlete who competed successfully in endurance racing as well as the show ring. 54

Meanwhile, the Poles were looking for a stallion to represent the Skowronek branch of the Ibrahim

sireline. *Naborr not only was a member of the Ibrahim sireline via Skowronek, he also had two additional crosses to Ibrahim through his dam Lagodna. In 1956, Poland imported a group of 10 Arabians from Tersk, including *Naborr and Noma, a race-winning daughter of Negatiw who went on to produce five race winners by four different sires, including the hard-hitting Nabras, who ran 68 times over seven seasons, finishing in the money 39 times. *Naborr sired eight crops of foals in Poland before being sold to Anne McCormick, of Scottsdale, Ariz., who imported him in 1963. A total of 30 *Naborr offspring raced in Poland, resulting in eight race winners and five stakes winners, including *Mirzaz (x Mira, by Wielki Szlem), who won the Polish Derby (and later was U.S. Top Ten Park). Speaking of the Polish Derby, a daughter of *Naborr, Kreolka, produced two Polish Derby winners: *Krezus (x Czort) and Kabaret (x *Bandos). The damsires of *Naborr’s stakes winners were Wielki

The only *Naborr son to race in the U.S. was *Mirzaz, who finished second twice behind another Polish import, the Hall of Fame horse *Mohacz, at Del Mar in 1962. *Naborr’s son *Espartero (x Ela, by Rozmaryn), a non-winner on the track who stood in Poland for two seasons, was sold to Sweden’s Blommerod Stud in 1971. In addition to being named Swedish National Champion Stallion, *Espartero was a successful sire. His son Partero was a European racing champion and a record money winner. In 1962, the Poles acquired Negatiw from Tersk. At that time he was then 17 years old, but he still went on to sire 12 crops before his death in 1973. In Poland, 30 of his offspring were tested on the track. Eighteen were winners and five were stakes winners. (This was an improvement on his Tersk record of 31 runners, 19 winners, and one stakes winner.)

Negatiw’s 18 Polish race winners were produced by dams sired by Anarchista, Comet, Czort, Gabor, Grand, Omar II, *Pietuszok, Priboj, Rozmaryn, Trypolis, Wielki Szlem, and Witraz. Negatiw’s Polish stakes winners were Forsa (x Fortunata, by Branibor), who won the Polish Oaks; her full brother *Figaro, who won the Criterium and other stakes and was later exported to the U.S.; Erazm (x Elekcja, by Comet); Santos (x Santa, by Czort), who also set a speed record in 1970 for 2,200 meters; and*Tinian (x *Tryncza, by Trypolis), who was imported to the U.S. by entertainer and breeder Wayne Newton and went on to be named U.S. and Canadian Top Ten English Pleasure. Negatiw’s son *Bandos (x Bandola, by Witraz) was considered the successor to his sire in Poland. His racing offspring included the Polish Triple Crown winner Arra, the Oaks winner Nawa, the previously discussed Derby winner Kabaret, and a host of other stakes winners, such as Wist, *Zloty Potok, Elbana, *Pekin, Pepton, and Bajazet. In addition, three different offspring of *Bandos won the Michalow Stakes three years in a row, from 1984 to 1986. Runners descended from Negatiw’s male line began winning in the U.S. starting in the 1960s and have continued to the present day. *Mirzaz, the *Naborr son mentioned above, sired a number of race winners in the 1960s, including Elsinore Camir, Elsinore Mirzan, and San Lou Romirz, who ran for 10 years, won 10 races, and finished in the money in 22 of his 36 starts. San Lou Romirz is best known for being the sire of the well-known stallion Burning Sand. In the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, sons and grandsons of Negatiw, like *Bihar, *Figaro, Roban, and SW Dawid, sired numerous high-profile stakes winners. These include Major Harbit+/, a veteran of 60 races; Cassels Roszlem+, the 1981 California Horse of the Year; Soaring Fastneasy, a Darley Champion Four-YearOld Filly; and Magna Terra Smoky, the one-eyed wonder who raced 120 times, winning 50 races and amassing $313,362 over his 10-year career, who was later inducted into the Arabian Racing Hall of Fame. In addition, the first Darley Horse of the Year, Vladin+/, who received this honor in 1987, was out of a daughter of *Etiw (Negatiw x Etna, by Faher)—also the grandsire of Magna Terra Smoky and Soaring Fastneasy, as well as other stakes winners. Another sport in which Negatiw’s name appears is endurance. In 1976, Faraonson—by the race-winning 56

Paddys Day (Burning Sand x AK Loretta, by Virgule Al Maury) is a three-time Darley Horse of the Year. Photo by Jim McCue.

*Naborr son *Faraon++—was the highest-placed stallion to finish the grueling 3,000-mile, coastto-coast Great American Horse Race. LZP Julios Last Chance, out of a daughter of SW Dawid, was a winner on the track who went on to rack up 3,000 endurance miles, including finishing the 100-mile Tevis Cup, for which his rider was awarded the 2013 Haggin Cup for best-conditioned horse. And the most recent Tevis Cup winner—RA Ares Bey—is a descendant of Negatiw, via *Naborr. Even now, in the twenty-first century, Negatiw continues to exert his positive genetic influence on Arabian racing. To cite one example, just as Negatiw faced off against his son *Naborr in the 1954 Moscow exhibition, 10-year-old Paddys Day—a Negatiw male-line descendant and a three-time Darley Horse of the Year—is still winning on the track and competing against his own offspring, the latest members of Negatiw’s storied lineage. Tobi Lopez Taylor is a former columnist for Arabian Finish Line, an award-winning writer and editor, and the author of two books on the horses and breeding program of Ed Tweed’s Brusally Ranch. She is currently completing a book about *Naborr and his legacy.
