I consider myself a very fortunate person because I was born in a wonderful country, Italy, in the beautiful city of Rome. I am from a family who taught me respect for others, love for others and the love for Arts in general, Painting and Photography in particular. I have many interests. Even though I am not so young... I continue studying and researching in the fields of interest I love more. These interests are vital to keep me busy now that I am retired from work within the UN. Then, my painting activity, my love for Photography, my love for horses and dogs, Arabian horses and sighthounds in particular, are very dear to me.
Who is Paola Marinangeli, exactly? When did you know you wanted to be a painter? How did your upbringing in Rome influence your art?
I started to draw in my childhood. My late father had a big passion for painting. So, I have learned from him the basic techniques. I never attended an Art school. I am a 100 per cent self-taught Artist. My passion, continuous exercise, love for Arts and frequent visits to Museums and Galleries have been my school. Having always loved dogs- and owned dogs in the family - it was natural for me to draw any breed and worked for many influential breeders
or breeds. Thirty years ago, after reading a book about horse breeds, I fell in love with Arabian horses... and this was the beginning of my exciting adventure with our extraordinary breed.
How was your first contact with the Arabian horse?
My first encounter with the Arabian Horse was a love at first sight. No other creature can provide more inspiration and emotion for my art. Thirty years ago I have decided to dedicate my painting activity to Arabian Horses in addition to dogs’ paintings and
portraits. The fascination, elegance and nobility in the Arabian horse breed are truly unique... and the important Cultural Heritage behind this breed is so remarkable... This is another factor that guided me toward a strong desire to explore this breed further and to be more and more involved in this painting activity.
What does it take to describe an Arabian horse in painting?
Describing Arabian horses is not an easy task. A lot of study, dedication, exercise and strong passion are required to achieve good results. I love to represent Arabian horses as they are, do not exaggerate the main
characters of the breed, show elegance, and respect the perfect combination of elements that create a magnificent horse with excellent stamina, a beautiful horse. But also a functional horse. My painting of a realistic style requires a lot of care to achieve this.
What are your favourite pictorial te-
chniques to capture the Arabian horse’s beauty and charisma at their best in your artworks?
My favourite painting techniques are the classic oil colours on board, canvas or paper - watercolour and a mixed technique of watercolour-gouache, then the basic technique of drawing with graphite pencil or water-soluble pencils, an ethereal technique, essential that it adapts perfectly to the Arabian “ethereal” beauty of the horse. The study of the head and overall body of a horse is one of my favourite
subjects to paint. Nevertheless, I believe that when commissioned portraits are created, the head displaying the correct expression of the eyes most accurately represents the portrayed “model”.
Tell the readers about your Fairy Tales Arabian Horses pictorial production... The Collection is a mix of watercolours, gouache, inks, gold leaf and acrylics, with a different style from the classic realistic paintings, with many influences drawn from the rich tradition of Persian and Mughal miniatures. My artworks are very decorative due to the many colours used, the charm conferred by inks and gold leaves, and a mix of fairy tale, fantasy and realistic styles. This type of painting can also be applied to portraits of specific horses. This Collection with this peculiar style was initially created at the request of a friend
who wanted to decorate his children’s room uniquely. These first paintings contained fewer decorations and with horses in a very stylized look. This type of painting gained a lot of success among my clients and friends who already owned my classic work style. So, I have a lot of fun creating the FAIRY TALES works because I have the complete freedom to invent, play with colours and pigments, and create specific ornaments and jewels for the horses. These paintings give me joy in making them... and I have realized the joy of my clients and friends who love to display and collect them over the years.
Have you ever cooperated with Arabian horse show organizers around the globe?
In more than thirty years of pictorial activity, I have also had the honour of collaborating with show organizers by providing original trophies for the championship classes, while my paintings and portraits are in the collections of the most prestigious Arabian horse breeders in the world and Arabian horse owners.
What is essential for an artist to keep going and stay inspired?
It is essential for artists to improve and perfect both their technical skills and their emotional abilities. Client/friend apprecia-
tions help me know that over the years, I have reached an excellent level of quality, a maturity regarding style, soul, and feelings. Nonetheless, there is always room for improvement and experimenting with new techniques, always respecting this wonderful breed and my “personal” style.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
To tell the truth, all the times I show my works - or when they are in the commissioner’s hands - there are nice compliments. I am happy when the compliment is: “There is so much life in this painting…. the eyes expression is the one of my horse…. how did you achieve this, Paola? Well, I hear this comment very often…
What is your definition of success?
Success is about reaching other people’s respect for the work you do. Success is when they appreciate your passion and dedication to this work and the freedom I have to maintain my style and never compromise with this.
What is your best advice to clients when they commission a work?
Firstly, provide me with good photos or videos when available because I need to catch the soul of a Horse as much as I can... and its personality. Generally, I suggest the best pose for the animal to the commissioner as I see it and experience it. The painting technique is mostly the commissioner’s choice... However, I am frequently asked to choose the technique that will work better for that specific horse.
Can our readers view and purchase your paintings online? How can they get in contact with you?
I am working on a website…but more as a gallery of works done over the years. I prefer direct contact with my clients through email at pmarabianhorseart@gmail. com, Instagram and Facebook. I have published several paintings on my social accounts, from the oldest to the most recent. All paintings can be seen and give a very detailed description of my style and inspirations.
Paola… At this stage of your extraordinary career, is there anything else you aim to achieve in the future? Is there any particular project you are working on?
My dream is to organize - I hope soonan exhibition to show my works and how my style and technique have improved in these 30 years of Arabian horse paintings. It would be great to produce a book to present the best of my production and my passion for the Arabian Horse breed... because Arabian horses are an infinite source of inspiration for me…A vision of beauty, perfection, a joy for the eyes and the soul!
What’s your message to the breeders and owners worldwide?
I had the honour of meeting important breeders from the beginning of my involvement with Arabian horses. From some of them, I have learnt so much... I want to mention my mentor, my endless source of inspiration, the late Dr Nasr Marei, a dear and unforgettable friend. I have no particular message for breeders or owners... Just one thought. They are primarily responsible for preserving a wonderful, precious creature, a Living Work of Art. They must always be aware of this responsibility and have the first goal of respecting
this breed and its history and important Cultural Heritage. The Arabian Horse is an ambassador of Beauty who unites people from different countries. From this standpoint, the Arabian Horse can also be a vehicle for peace, mutual toleration and joy…

Since Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan became aware of the world around her, the Arabian horse played a crucial role in her life, and her very first horse was a dream-like Arabian. Her primary goal has continued to divulge and increase the pure Arabian horse worldwide to carry on the compelling legacy of her venerable grandfathers. In 2024, the eclectic Sheikha launched and patronized the 3rd Al-Shiraa International Arabian Horse Show, celebrating its well-deserved advancement to an ECAHO A-Category show. The morphology event, organized by the EAHS under the lead of HE Mohamed Ahmed Alharbi as his quality of show manager, ran from 28-30 January at the brandnew venue Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, Abu Dhabi. Continuing the benevolent tradition of the 2023 edition, all European contenders’ transportation costs were generously covered in 2024, which resulted in an overwhelming turnout of famous breeding programs from the Old Continent. Furthermore, Al Shiraa Concierge provided the many attendants of the show with a comprehensive itinerary for their trip in such a
perfect way that they did not need to worry about where to stay, book accommodations or transport to the venue. A shuttle service was available at specific times to drive guests and participants to the elegant Al Ain Equestrian facilities and back to the Hotel. In 2024, two hundred seven (207) of the world’s best-purebred Arabians belonging to one hundred thirty (130) international participating owners competed for a jaw-dropping total prize money of AED 3,070,000 allocated as follows: AED 1700,000 for the Classes, AED 1320,000 for the Championship and AED 50,000 for the Special Awards. The international panel of judges featured Mr Abdelouahed Maagoul from Morocco, Mr Bruce McCrea from the United States, Mrs Helen Hennekens-van Nes from Belgium, Mr Jonas Salzmann from Kuwait, Mrs Marianne Tengstedt from Denmark, Mr Hegazy Nashaat from Egypt, Mr Robbie Den Hartog from The Netherlands, Mrs Sylvie Eberhardt from Germany, Mr William Oppen from Argentina and Mr Willie Brown from South Africa. With the grade of Disciplinary Commissioners: Ms Line Brunsgaard from Denmark, Mrs Laura Mascagna from Italy, Mrs Kerstin Wisniowski from Germany, Dr Moham-
med Hammad from Egypt and Mr Hamed Alharthi from the United Arab Emirates. As Ringmasters, Dr Amira Abdelwahab from the United Arab Emirates and Mr Eidha Almenhali from the United Arab Emirates. Official commentators: Mr Mohamed Abu Baker from the United Arab Emirates (Arabic) and Mr Eric Blaak from The Netherlands (English). Official Scorer: Peter Biju from the United Arab Emirates. Official Photographer: Mr Morhafr Alassaf from the United Arab Emirates. For Arabian Horse Magazine, the best moments and atmospheres were captured by the lenses of master photographer Mr Ahmed Taha from Egypt. CONCLUSION & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The 2024 Al Shiraa International Arabian Horse Show was an ecstatic competition and successful celebration of the beauty and heritage of exquisite Arabian horses in Abu Dhabi. The preservation and promotion of these ancient bloodlines are something that the Royal Family and H.H. Sheikha Fatima Hazza Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, going
back many generations, are fervently committed to and passionate about. They indefatigably continue spreading the word about these magnificent animals that have powerfully formed their heritage and growth as a Nation. From the ancient Bedouin people of the desert who lived alongside the Arabian horse to the show arenas of the fast-paced modern world, H.H. Sheikha Fatima Hazza Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan with all the Royal Family members have always appreciated and promoted equine beauty in its natural form. 2024 has brought even more excitement than ever, with a new venue at Al Ain Equestrian, Golf & Shooting Club, home to a shopping village with fun for families and children, food trucks, activities, shops and pony rides. The electrifying Liberty performance by Spanish Santi Serracamps, known as the horse whisperer, stole at some point the show. His horses responded to his commands in unison, showcasing their incredible agility and grace with each movement. Their subtle whispers and gestures revealed a strong connection with their trainer. Santi Serra’s ability to communicate with these majestic creatures is highly remarkable, showing an understanding of their nature and mastery of horsemanship out of the ordinary that left the audience in awe. Therefore, we are highly thankful to H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and all the Eminencies of the High
Organizing Committee and Show-Technical Staff who put together such an impressive and well-organized morphology event. Thank you to the extraordinary Mrs Antonia Bautista - Board member of the Directors and Organizing Committee - for the excellent show implementation and coordination with the proactive and indefatigable Al Shiraa Team. From the moment guests arrived, hospitality and attention to detail were impeccable, and the catering service at the dinner party was first-class, with a wide array of delicious and traditional Arabian dishes. The organizers left no stone unturned to ensure every attendee had a fantastic culinary experience. So, after the championship tensions subsided, people relaxed and enjoyed the festive mood. In conclusion, thank you to the generous sponsors, the breeders and the owners, the judges, the disciplinary commissioners, the handlers, the ring-masters, the official commentators, the members of the show-technical staff, and all the behindthe-scene hardworking people who are often forgotten but deserve similar praise. The AHM Team had a lot of fun and loved the beautiful horses and the authentic Arabian atmosphere. We wish to see more and more breeders and lovers of the Arabian horse joining the Al Shiraa International Arabian Horse Show in 2025 to experience its unique, magical thrill!

The bay stallion Thee Desperado (05.04.198926.07.2013), out of the broodmare AK Amiri Asmarr (14.03.1985) (The Egyptian Prince x Asmarr), was The Minstril’s (27.07.198427.08. 2010) (Ruminaja Ali x Bahila) paramount son. The Hadba Enzahiya mare, AK Amiri Asmarr (14.03.1985), bred by Mr Fred and Mrs Judy Gunzner of Green Mountain Arabians, Silverton, Oregon, was part of the revered collection of mares at the MarSal Arabians Stud, Crawford, Texas, owned by Mr Tom and Mrs Martha Salome. They were dazzled by the young stallion The Minstril when he won the U.S. National Top Ten Futurity Stallion Title in 1987.
Although this champion only had three breeding seasons to his credit, he was already proving a great sire since his first foals crop. The Salomes thought The Minstril would be a perfect match for their filly AK Amiri Asmarr (14.03.1985). Therefore, in 1988, they first covered the mare with this magnificent bay horse. On 5 April 1989, AK Amiri Asmarr gave birth to a handsome bay colt of extraordinary quality and perfectly balanced proportions. Unluckily, the new horse mommy rejected having the foal nearby, but the latter was stubborn and didn’t give up. The person who would become this little colt’s trainer, handler and lifelong friend, Mrs Shawn Crews, got involved to solve the problem. In the end, AK Amiri Asmarr accepted the newborn who took up the name of Thee Desperado for his great obstinacy and boldness. When Thee

Owned by Mr. James and Mrs. Judy Sirbasku, Rock Creek Arabians, Waco, Texas. U.S. National Reserve Champion and Scottsdale Supreme Champion Stallion.
Desperado was five weeks old, The Salomes sold 60% of his property to Mr David Gardner of Gardner Bloodstock Ltd. in China Spring, Waco, Texas. Just a week later, eight breeders purchased the semen of the future stallion. Several months after Thee Desperado was weaned, unfortunately, trouble came, as the colt developed colic that required emergency surgery. Eventually, our champion fully recovered. Thee Desperado was as strong as solid as if nothing had happened. His fate seemed unchangeable in the face of all hindrances. Thee Desperado’s show career began at the age of two. In his first stretch, he won Regional Championships and became Junior Champion Colt at the U.S. Egyptian Event in 1991. Over the years, Thee Desperado obtained increasingly better results. Under the direction and guidance of Mrs Shawn Crews, his trainer
and friend, this athletic stallion became a star player. In 1993, he was crowned Champion Stallion at the American Regional 9. As well as winning the U.S. titles and Canadian National Top Ten Stallion. 1993 was also the year that Mrs Judy and Mr James Sirbasku of Rock Cre -

Bred by Mr.Fred and Mrs. Judy Gunzner, Green Mountain Arabians, Silverton, Oregon.ek Arabians, Waco, Texas, purchased the majority ownership interest in Thee Desperado. Judy and Jim Sirbasku’s apple in the eye continued to give them great satisfaction. In 1994, he was again crowned Canadian National Top Ten Stallion, Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion, Scottsdale Unanimous Grand Champion Stallion and U.S. National Reserve Champion Stallion. Following his incredible triumphs, Thee Desperado was awarded the Legion of Honour. The Halter career of this extraordinary stallion continued to shine. From 1996 to 2007, he won the U.S. Leading Egyptian Event Halter Sire Title; in 2008, this Title was passed on to his son Botswana (1998) (Thee Desperado x The Minuet). After all those achievements and love for the horse of their dreams, Mrs Judy and Mr James Sirbasku wanted to keep him only for themselves. Therefore, in 1994, the couple acquired the whole property of Thee Desperado to give him a comfortable life and pampered the horse in their stable until the day of his death on July 26, 2013.
Thee Desperado is a Giant in the Arabian horse world. As well as having a perfect phenotype, we see that he boasts the most revered Straight Egyptian horses in history, analysing his pedigree, a bombshell of centuries-old bloodlines crossed with those that have made the modern Straight Egyptian Horse great. He was that unique genetic expression of bloodlines that led to a breeding miracle. His sire, The Minstril, displays several modern bloodlines that almost all convey the blood of Nazeer (09.08.1934-07.06.1960) (Mansour x Bint Samiha), rich in the blood of Morafic (19.03.1956-18.03.1974) (Nazeer x Mabrouka), concentrated in the maternal grandsire of Thee Desperado, The Egyptian Prince (02.07.1967-20.09.1995) (Morafic x Bint Mona) with several bloodlines of the supreme broodmare Moniet El Nefous (11.02.1946-Dec.1976) (Shahloul x Wanisa). The strong presence of Morafic in the pedigree of Thee Desperado is maintained for generations, perpetrating classic nobility, proud demeanour and style in movement, high refinement, thin skin and robust, flat bones: all qualities conveyed by Nazeer. From the stallion Ibn Rabdan (17.05.19171944) (Rabdan El Azrak x Bint Gamila), highly concentrated in the dam line, Thee Desperado took the gorgeously balanced body, athletic talent, beautiful mahogany bay colour and lovely dark eyes. sperado’s dam line derives from the Hadba Enzahiya mare, Bint Hadba El Saghira (22.02.1912), a daughter of the stallion El Halabi (Saklawi I x Halabia) and out of the mare Hadba (Saklawi I x Venus) I have already spoken in past.
His maternal great-great-grand dam is one of the most significant broodmares of the modern era: the grey Nabilahh (Nabilah) (01.09.1960) (Anter x Farasha). Among her offspring - in addition to the legendary Khofo (Khopho) (02.03.1965-13.12.1991) by Morafic, born in Egypt and imported into the U.S. as a foal together with his dam - we find his full brother, the grey Kamal Ibn Morafic (1969) and the Champion in Pleasure Abu Ali (05.06.1974) by Ibn Hafiza, the prestigious mares Bint Nabilahh (12.01.1970) and Lohelia (05.02.1971), both by Morafic. Moreover, the mare Neama (1976) by Sakr (01.01.1968-03.06.1997) (Sultann x Enayat), the mare AK Bint Nabilahh (1979) by Ibn Moniet El Nefous (26.03.1964-1985) (Morafic x Moniet el Nefous), the mare Frabilahh (1984) by The Egyptian Prince and lastly, without mentioning them all, Thee Desperado’s maternal great-grand dam, the bay matron Nagliah (20.02.1972) by Ibn Hafiza (24.08.1959) (Sameh x Hafiza). Nabilahh (01.09.1960)’s dam, Farasha (20.02.1951-1967) (Sid Abouhom x Yosreia), was a mare of exceptional calibre. She produced outstanding stallions such as the chestnut Faleh (12.03.1967-20.07.1987) by Alaa El Din (25.02.1956) (Nazeer x Kateefa) and his full grey brother Farazdac (23.02.1966-28.02.2001). Furthermore, Farasha was the dam of the chestnut Galal (21.08.1959), one of the leading stallions of the E.A.O. (Egyptian Agricultural Organization), and the last son of Nazeer. I will not go further into this because I have already discussed this broodmare in previous chapters. I said that Thee Desperado’s maternal great-grand dam is the bay broodmare Nagliah (20.02.1972) (Ibn Hafiza x Nabilahh), a marvellous, highly prolific mare, with beautiful big black eyes and an exquisite head of perfect proportions, which she passed on her great-grandson. To better understand the constitution of Thee Desperado’s pedigree, I would like to open a short parenthesis to make some references to Ibn Hafiza (24.08.1959) (Sameh x Hafiza), the sire of Nagliah (20.02.1972). Born in El Zahraa, Cairo, Egypt, in 1970, Ibn Hafiza was imported to the U.S. by Mr Douglas B. and Mrs Margaret Marshall, owners of Gleannloch Farms, in Spring (Houston),
A x Hafiza) in Egypt. Bred by El Zahraa Stud, EAO, Cairo, Egypt. Imported to USA in 1970 by Mr. Douglas B. and Mrs. Margaret Marshall, Gleannloch Farms, Spring (Houston), Texas. Sire of halter and performance Champions. Asmarr 1979-Sept.2.2005(Zaghloul x Nagliah). Bred by Gleannloch Farms, Spring (Houston), Texas. Owned by Mr. Fred and Mrs. Judy Gunzner, Green Mountain Arabians, Silverton, Oregon.Texas, to cross him with the daughters of Morafic, in the hope of producing subjects like the stallion El Araby. Eventually, Gleannloch Farms used exclusively Morafic’s sons. So, the much-loved Ibn Hafiza headed to new loving owners: Mr and Mrs Fred and Judy Gunzner of Green Mountain Arabians in Silverton, Oregon. At an old age, after much insisting, in 1982, Ibn Hafiza was purchased by Dr Burton and Mrs Sheryl Melton of Rinconada Arabians, near Bernalillo, New Mexico, where the stallion lived peacefully for the rest of his life. Ibn Hafiza was a clever Straight Egyptian stallion with a gentle disposition and great spirit, a Champion in Halter and Performance. He displays no bloodlines to Nazeer or subjects coming from the Straight Egyptian horses bred by the Blunts in England as Kazmeen (1916) (Sotamm x Kasima) and Sotamm (1910) (Astraled x Selma II) or the broodmares
approximately 25% in Ibn Hafiza’ s pedigree. Thus, in Ibn Hafiza, we see many qualities attributed to Ibn Rabdan: a very compact horse with harmonious and rounded body lines. He had the perfect structure of the ideal Arabian Horse, divided into three equal parts: from the tip of the chest to the withers, from the withers to the hip and from the hip to the tip of the buttock. I must then add the remarkable traits derived from Sameh (04.04.1945-1967), a son of El Moez (30.12.1934) (Ibn Fayda x Bint Zareefa), and also a grandson of Ibn Rabdan: a more inclined shoulder, an excellent ribcage, a straighter and stronger topline, and a powerful and muscular back. Ibn Hafiza became very popular and appreciated among the breeders of that time for his beauty, statuesque figure and, above all, the features he conveyed. He was a stallion with an excellent disposition and loved to be around humans. The then Straight Egyptian Arabian hor-
Bint Rissala (1920) (Ibn Yashmak x Risala) and Bint Riyala (1920) (Nadir x Riyala). Therefore, he represented the perfect outcross. The sire of Ibn Hafiza (24.08.1959) was Sameh (04.04.1945-1967) (El Moez x Sameera), about whom I have already spoken in the past. His dam was the Obeyyah Om Jurays mare, Hafiza (09.06.1949) (Hamdan x Mahfouza (30.03.1943) by Hamdan x El Mahrousa), who came from the family of El Shahbaa (19.01.1925) (El Hamdani el Nasiri x El Obeya Om Grees) from Inshass Stud. Ibn Hafiza is the maternal brother of one of the most handsome Arabian stallions ever bred in Egypt: El Araby (06.11.1962-1968) (Morafic x Hafiza). Sadly, this horse had a short life due to a tragic mistake and left very little progeny. Another thing to highlight is the three bloodlines that come from the stallion Ibn Rabdan (17.05.1917-1944) (Rabdan El Azrak x Bint Gamila), bringing his blood to
ses’ breeders were faced with an unprecedented opportunity for outcrossing with the many mares descending from Nazeer. It is interesting to note that although Thee Desperado carries predominantly Nazeer’s blood, the latter does not appear in his pedigree until his maternal grand dam Asmarr (1979-02.09.2005) (Zaghloul x Nagliah), a very robust bay broodmare, also bred at Gleannloch Farm, Texas and owned by Mr Fred and Mrs Judy Gunzner of Green Mountain Arabians, Silverton, Oregon. Asmarr’s sire, the grey stallion Zaghloul (29-10-1963-1990) was born in El Zahraa, and was imported in 1970 into the U.S. by Gleannloch Farms. He was a sports horse and Champion in flat racing in Egypt, a son of the powerful and masculine grey Inshass Stud stallion Gassir (23.03.1941-1970) (Kheir x Badia 02.04.1934-1942 by Ibn Rabdan x Zareefa). Zaghloul (29.10.1963-1990) was a Dahman Shahwan subject coming from the family of Bint
Zagloul Oct.29.1963-1990(Gassir x Gharbawia by Hamdan). Bred by El Zahraa Stud, EAO, Cairo, Egypt. Imported to the USA in 1970 by Mr. Douglas B. and Mrs. Margaret Marshall, Gleannloch Farms, Texas. - Sired 63 registered purebreds in USA. Thee Desperado Apr.5.1989-July.26. 2013(The Minstril x AK Amiri Asmarr) with Mr. Jim Kline of Kline Arabians and Mr. Willis Flick of Glenglade Arabians, having just signed up as lifetime breeding patrons.El Bahreyn (1898). His dam was also an Inshass Stud broodmare: Gharbawia (05.08.1951-1970), a daughter of the grey Hamdan (13.09.1936-1967) (Ibn Rabdan x Bint Radia), a Saklawi Jedran Ibn Sudan stallion and the pride of Inshass Stud, flashing out seven times in the sire line and five times in Thee Desperado’s dam line. Gharbawia’s dam was Ghorra (09.11.1942-1964) (Hamdan x Ghandoura), a grey Saqlawiyah mare from Inshass Stud, descending from the family of the mare El Samraa (05.01.1924) (Hab el Rih x Bint el Sheik), purchased by King Ahmed Fuad I in January 1931 from Sheikh Omar Abd el Hafiz to develop the Inshass Stud breeding program. In Zaghloul’s pedigree, it is interesting to note that due to the presence of Gassir and Hamdan, we find the highest percentage of Ibn Rabdan blood among the stallions bred by the Royal Agricultural Society of Egypt (R.A.S.), approximately 31.25%. This is manifest in the Zaghloul phenotype, with his balanced conformation and rounded body lines. Up to this point, the mares we have mentioned in the dam line of Thee Desperado carry many bloodlines of the grey Rabdan El Azrak (1897) (Dahman x Rabda), known for producing hi-

ghly pigmented bay or black, intelligent and athletic subjects, with long, well-set necks and exceptional, powerful shoulders.
From here onwards, the substantial introduction of Nazeer’s blood into the genealogy of Thee Desperado begins, with the extraordinary results we know: the mare Asmarr (1979-02.09.2005) was bred to the stallion The Egyptian Prince (02.07.1967-20.09.1995) (Morafic x Bint Mona) and the gorgeous AK Amiri Asmarr (14.03.1985) came to life. The beauty, remarkable qualities, great pride and nobility of Thee Desperado earned him so much popularity to attract several mares, many of whom were Straight Egyptians. Several others, however, came from different bloodlines, producing innumerable Straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related Champions. In his breeding career, Thee Desperado produced 865 Straight Egyptian subjects. Then, if we also add the Egyptian-related, we reach around a thousand subjects, of which less than 12% are geldings. This means that many of the male offspring have gone on to reproduce. His sons and daughters are scattered around the globe. Besides the United States and Canada, they can be found throughout Europe, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Ecuador and other countries. It would take a book to talk about all the Champions that Thee Desperado sired, but I will only mention a few in this chapter. At the 1985 Summer Classic Sale, Mrs Judy Sirbasku purchased the grey mare Glorieta Zaarina (1978) Ansata Abu Nazeer x Anchor Hill Hamla). She was a Hadba Enzahiya broodmare from one of the most genetically powerful and influential families in Egyptian breeding. At the end of the 1940s, U.S. breeder Mr Daniel C. Gainey of Gainey Fountainhead Arabians, Owatonna, Minnesota, wanted to introduce Egyptian blood into his breeding program, impressed by the horses of Henri B. Babson. Mr Daniel C. Gai-
ney was a fine jeweller and owner of the Jewellry Design and Manufacturing Business of Jostens, Inc. In 1939, he was gifted an Arabian colt, which ignited his passion for Arabian horses, which he bred with the same care and perfection he used in crafting his exquisite jewellery. So, Mr Gainey introduced Ferzon (26.02.1952-19.07.1982) (Ferneyn x Fersara) in his breeding program. This handsome grey stallion has made the history of the Arabian horse. He was purchased at birth by his breeder Mr Frank B. McCoy of Bell, California, and lived on the farm for thirty years until his death. Mr Gainey bred National Champion horses that have written the history of the Arabian Horse, like the stallions Galizon (1964) (Azraff x Gay-Rose) and the majestic grey Gai Parada (1969-20.12.1993) (Ferzon x Azleta). His exceptional breeding skills and discerning eye earned him the role of Director of the American Arabian Horse Registry from 1942 to 1973 and President from 1958 to 1973.
In 1946, Mr Daniel C. Gainey purchased in Egypt the grey mare Mamdouha (06.04.194024.04.1968) (Kheir x Samha), bred by the Royal Egyptian Agricultural Society (R.A.S.). From her dam line, Mamdouha (06.04.1940-24.04.1968) was a granddaughter of the bay brood mare Bint Samiha (13.07.1925) (Kazmeen x Samiha) (dam of Nazeer), who arrived in the U.S. in foal with the Dahman Shahwan grey stallion Enzahi (25.11.1935) (Nabras x Fardous). Thus, in 1947,
(The Elixir x Rhapsody In Black by Thee Desperado). Bred by Mr. James and Mrs. Judy Sirbasku, Rock Creek Arabians, Waco,Texas. Owned by Amethyst Acres Equine Center LLC, Buchanan, Virginia.the mare Gamila (1947-24.04.1968) came to life. At the age of 12, she was sold to the brothers, Dr Thomas and Mr Eric Atkinson of Anchor Hill Ranch, Rogersville, Missouri. At The Atkinsons, Gamila was bred to their grey Babson stallion, Hadbah (1957-26.04.1976) (Fabah x Fa Deene). So, in 1966, the beautiful filly who would become one of the finest mares of those years was born. She would also be a Champion in Halter and Performance and a first-rate dam. This broodmare was Anchor Hill Hamla. Sold to Mr Michael (Mike) and Mrs Carolyn (Kiki) Chase of Glorieta Ranch, Lufkin, Texas, she gave birth to seven stunning mares, five of which were sired by the stallion Ansata Abu Nazeer (01.22.1974June 1983) (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Bint Zaafarana). One of these mares was Glorieta Zaarina (1978). When Judy Sirbasku purchased Glorieta Zaarina, the mare had underneath her a gorgeous black filly by Ruminaja Ali (11.05.19761997) (Shaikh Al Badi x Bint Magidaa). This filly was Aliashahm RA (1985-19.09.2002), dam of the black wonder Rhapsody In Black (1994), daughter of Thee Desperado. Bred to Thee Desperado, Aliashahm RA (1985-19.09.2002) also generated the Champion Halter stallion, Thee Pharaoh (1997). Judy Sirbasku used to describe
Rhapsody In Black as an ethereal beauty. She had the perfect head, gorgeous big black eyes and a beautiful neck. She was exquisite and sweet. Judy once told about her time in the stables with Rhapsody In Black, her new born colt and her dam Aliashahm RA. Judy began to scratch Aliashahm RA, then the latter began to rub her daughter, and Rhapsody began to do the same to her foal. There was something magical about the scene. I don’t know how to describe it. There was a great chemistry between Rhapsody and Judy. Each time the woman called her name in the stables, the mare would neigh at her. Rhapsody In Black (1994), boasted 7 champions sons at the U.S. Egyptian Event. In 2005, the mare was crowned the U.S. Egyptian Event Leading Dam and became the foundation mare for Rock Creek Arabians, producing top-quality progeny. The first son out of Rhapsody In Black was the magnificent bay stallion Magic Elixir (1998) by The Elixir (19.05.1992-30.11.2017) (Hi-Fashion Mreekh x Jaliya). In 2000, the first filly came by. This was the chestnut Alia Amal LDA by the stallion Tcheser Billa Bay (1991) (Anaza Bay Shahh x Anaza Mar Aliya). She was sold to Mr Dan and Mrs Louise De Russeau of LD Arabians, Cedar Creek, Texas, where Alia Amal LDA was bred

intensively. Later and until 2014, Rhapsody In Black produced superior offspring with the stallion Alixir 1998 (The Elixir x The Prevue). I have already cited many of Alixir’s sons with Rhapsody In Black in the past. Therefore, I will only mention a few and start with two extraordinary stallions: the black Bellagio RCA (2003), who remained at Rock Creek Arabians, where he left beautiful offspring. The other black stallion, Miraih RCA (2004), was exported to Egypt to Al Kahira Arabians, where he sired several champions. Among the daughters that Rhapsody In Black had by the stallion Alixir (1998), I would like to mention: the bay RSL Faith (2001), the bay Bint Rhapsody In Black (2005) and Rhapsody’s Crescendaa (2006).

CONCLUSION & AKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Katara International Arabian Horse Festival has unquestionably become the most important and one of the most prestigious events of this type in the world. It has become a class all on its own, as this show cannot be compared to any other. Organizing Committee members set clear goals that have been masterfully accomplished since the organization began. First and number one, preserving the authentic Qatari heritage and promoting it worldwide. Passion, teamwork and huge funds were put into this 2024 edition with the participation of the world’s finest purebred Arabian horses judged according to the highest arbitration standards. The experience of the three previous editions made everything run smoothly, and the team responsible for the technical organization and
punctuality has been the same since the first edition, which ensured everyone the comfort of using their own experiences. Complementing the Festival equestrian focus were also many cultural and artistic events, including a horse seminar on horsemanship, horse training and ethology, photo exhibitions, saddle painting, visual art and educational workshops, live painting, and the opening of three art exhibitions: Symphony of Originality by Ali Almimar at Building 47, Horses and Colour by Ali Nadir and Mahacine Al Ahrach, and The Horse, a Grandiose Elegance by Andre Guimaraes, the latter two located at Building 1. What added a touch of glamour to the Festival was then the Skydiving team from Lekhwiya Force’s performance over Katara Beach, featuring the portrait of the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar flag and the AFC Asian Cup flag, among others. Thank the hosts for a great show, excellent atmosphere, hospitality and kindness felt at every step, and the Sponsors for their unparalleled support. After the Katara Festival 2024, we will likely meet again in Doha next year and write another remarkable page on the history of this sensational Arabian Horse event!

A DAY OF DISCOVERING BAGDAD
As the Arabian Horse Magazine Team prepared to cover the prestigious Sumer International Arabian Horse Show 2024 in Baghdad, they knew they wanted to experience more than just the showgrounds. Eager to immerse themselves in the rich culture and history of the ancient city, they decided to explore Baghdad on foot. With comfortable walking shoes and cameras in hand, the team set out early one mor-
ning, ready to discover the hidden treasures of Baghdad. The hurried streets were alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of the city, with the scent of spices and the sounds of Arabic music filling the air. Their first stop was the famous Al-Mutanabbi Street, known for its ancient booksellers and bustling markets. The team meandered through the narrow alleys, browsing stacks of old manuscripts and colourful souvenirs. They engaged with locals, exchanging stories and insights about the city’s history and traditions. Next, they wandered through the winding lanes of the Al-Mansur district, where ancient mosques and ornate palaces stood in silent
grandeur. The team marvelled at the intricate tile work and towering minarets, snapping photos to capture the beauty of the architecture. As the day progressed, the team went to the Tigris River, where they enjoyed a stroll along the promenade. The sun glowed over the waters, creating a serene backdrop for the bustling city. They watched traditional wooden boats slice through the water, transporting goods and passengers along the historic river. For lunch, the team stopped at a local café to savour authentic Iraqi cuisine. Plates of fragrant kebabs, savoury flatbreads, and sweet baklava were shared as they toasted to their unforgettable adventure in Baghdad. In the afternoon, they visited the magnificent Baghdad Tower,
where they marvelled at the panoramic views of the city skyline. From the observation deck, they could see the ancient city walls, bustling markets, and lush green parks that dotted the landscape.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the city, the team reflected on their day of discovery. They had walked in the footsteps of ancient civilizations, tasted the flavours of traditional cuisine, and immersed themselves in the vibrant culture of Baghdad. With their hearts full of memories and cameras full of snapshots, they knew their journey through the city had been an unforgettable experience that would live on in their hearts and on the pages of the Arabian Horse Magazine.
