Luxury, Redefined Ulysse Nardin honors the Zheng He Treasure Boat in its new Classic Collection limited-edition enamel cloisonné timepiece.

T

he Chinese Treasure Boat (or Bao-Chuan) was a type of large wooden ship in the fleet of admiral Zheng He, the renowned explorer and mariner, who led seven incredible voyages during the early 15th-century Ming Dynasty. These massive ships were 137m long and 55m wide, with nine masts and four decks for up to 500 crew as well as cargo. While they were few in number, Zheng He’s voyages covered extensive territory, traveling through Southeast Asia to faraway Africa and Arabia. With a fleet numbering hundreds of ships, and crews of around 30,000 men, his was easily the biggest maritime expedition of that time. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng made a total of seven voyages, visiting 37 countries, an incredible achievement. To accurately portray the appearance of the Zheng He Treasure Boat, Ulysse Nardin called upon its enamel specialists Donzé Cadrans for the intricate enamel cloisonné technique so valued by collectors. In this very ancient art form, which dates back to the early 4th century, craftsmen employ fine gold wire to create the compartments, within which the enamel is carefully deposited. Every cloisonné dial involves immense effort and patience, requiring 50 hours of artisanal expertise and 26 separate processes to bring a scene to vivid life. Handcrafted from 18-karat rose gold

Although we are halfway through 2017, vegetal kinds of colours like Celery and Foliage being combined with berry-infused purples and an eggshell blue will still reflect next year according to Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman. An abundance of warm and earthy colours will also replace the more minimal palette of previous seasons.

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

ayani Motors lent me the MG’s first ever SUV which is a midsize. Anybody from the UK will know that MG is a famous mark that produced two-seater sports cars up until the 1980s. Though loved by many in the UK and in the US (particularly in California) where they were popular, MGs were not the best quality and would often break down. Seven years ago, the company name was purchased by a Chinese company. The last MG I had driven was a convertible MGB – GT many (many) years ago and I loved it. This was my first experience of a Chinese MG, and a VERY different experience it was. An MG SUV? Made in China? Seriously? I found it amusing that the test car I was given displayed the British Union Jack on its sides and roof! Anyway, about this car. You get a lot for

44 Bahrain Confidential September 2017

Chinese cars are getting better and better. the money. The company makes 3 grades of the GS. In Bahrain they offer only the top and fully loaded version. That means you get 18-inch alloys, reverse camera, a sun roof, electric handbrake, and all sorts of other goodies. It also has a start/stop button and paddle shift. The cabin is nice and logical. Some people may say the interior is a bit cheap looking and 100% plastic but it is functional. The leather seats are particularly comfortable and in the back there’s plenty of room.

The engine is a 2-litre turbo producing 220hp and 350Nm which is as good as it gets for such a vehicle, but I didn’t really like that the acceleration was not smooth. Chinese cars are getting better and better. I was impressed with the MG GS overall other than my complaint of the lack of smoothness. The MG GS is priced at BD7,800 on the road. n

Verdict: The good: • Lots of features for the money. The bad: • Cheap looking plastics used. • Slightly jerky when accelerating. To arrange your own test drive contact Zayani Motors - Tel: +973 1770 3703

What motivates you to get up in the morning? My passion for photography and to see the world.

You have traveled a lot of places and took many photographs during your course of work. What makes Bahrain different from the places you have captured? Bahrain is a very diverse and culturally rich. Coming from a traditional background and living through the traditions of Muharraq made me appreciate cultural diversity. I love documenting traditions and would love to work on a project documenting Bahraini culture.

What does photography mean to you? What first drew you to take photos? Through Photography I express my emotions and it is where I forget all of my worries stress and focus on the small and beautiful things. It also keeps my creativity flame alive as I always try to challenge myself to do better and improve myself

While taking a photo, how important is It for you to connect with your subjects? A photograph with a story showing rapport in a clean composition is a good photograph. The stronger the emotions you show the stronger is the photograph. You cannot get real expressions till you connect with subjects.

Do you have a favourite photograph? If yes, can you tell

46 Bahrain Confidential September 2017

us what is it? I have few favourite ones. Portraits are my favorite photos and I also like street photos as they transform me to that exact time and place.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Muharraq. I grew up and live there and it is where I feel at home. n For more information: Rasha@RashaYousif.com

Charlotte Gail Anderson Head Health and Wellness Practitioner - HV Holistic Health and Corrective Training. What do you do? I’m the Head Trainer at HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training in Seef, a private, personal training studio/ wellness clinic.

What makes HV different from other gyms? Before we start our clients’ training, we carry out an assessment of their physical and mental wellbeing. We measure their posture, do a movement analysis and go through detailed questionaires that give our trainers the full picture. We believe that health is more than just hours of high intensity exercise in a gym, and what works for one client might not be suitable for another. We don’t believe in relying on guess work.

Who are your typical clientele? We train both men and women, but never at the same time. We see a lot of clients with high stress levels, from work or family pressure. Life can be pretty taxing for most of us at some point in our

56 Bahrain Confidential September 2017

lives, and one of my biggest pleasures is helping those people engage in a happier life through correct exercise and diet choices. We also work closely with the best physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors on the island, so we see a lot of people with existing injuries for continued, rehabilitiation exercise programs.

What’s the most common problem you encounter? There has been a lot of publicity recently about the importance of good posture, and this is not without good reason. Bad posture not only leads to physical pain in the neck, shoulders and back, it also has a negative effect on our emotional health, too. We often see those with poor posture, experiencing depression, poor digestive function and other symptoms, which add up to a poor sense of health. The good news is that no one is beyond help, and I urge anyone experiencing any of those problems to seek help.

How can people find out more about what you do? The best place to see what we’re up to is on our website, hvholistichealth.com, or through our Instagram @hvholistic. We’re planning a series of lectures for our clients, ranging from nutrition for children, to managing stress, and we’ll post the details on our instagram page closer to the time. n Charlotte began her personal training career in 2007 in the UK. Specialising in back care, weight loss and injury rehabilitation, she has a wide knowledge base in the most technical areas of training and health. He also elaborates on his decision to pick Yale over the plethora of schools he was admitted to. “Yale offers more than a world-class education; it offers an experience like no other. The exposure, the culture at Yale resonates throughout history. It has a tradition of excellence, leadership, innovation and inspiration and that made it impossible to consider any school in the world ahead of it.” Abdulla, in the past, has also represented Bahrain at the World Debating Championships.
