Don’t Panic The comprehensive Bahrain Confidential Guide to the Coronavirus (COVID-19)
I
n a span of a few weeks, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has threatened countries outside China, including Bahrain. While it’s completely understandable to be worried, your best bet to getting through the situation unscathed is to channel that anxious energy into doing what you can to stop the virus from spreading. But what does preparedness look like in practice?
Here’s what you need to know…
10 Bahrain Confidential April 2020
The Basics What is a coronavirus? Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.
What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19? Those with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms. The most common symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure; including fever, tiredness, difficulty breathing and dry cough.
Feature
FAQs If infected with coronavirus, can you survive it and recover? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment. The vast majority of people with coronavirus survive.
How does the virus spread? People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when the infected person coughs or exhales.
Can someone who has been quarantined spread the illness to others? Someone who has been released from COVID-19 quarantine is not considered a risk for spreading the virus to others because they have not developed illness during the incubation period.
Should I wear a mask to protect myself? The coronavirus is transmitted through droplets, not through the air. If you are a healthy individual, the use of a mask is not necessary. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected.
What should I do if I had a close contact with someone who has COVID-19? Call 444 if you experience any of the symptoms related to the virus.
Is there anything I should not do? The following measures ARE NOT effective against COVID-19 and can be harmful: • Smoking • Wearing multiple masks • Taking antibiotics
COVID-19 and Animals What is the risk of COVID-19 infection from animals or animal products imported from affected areas? There is no evidence suggesting that animals or animal products imported from infected areas pose a risk for spreading COVID-19.
Can I catch COVID-19 from my pet? No. There is no evidence that companion animals or pets such as cats and dogs have been infected or could spread the virus that causes COVID-19. However, since animals can spread other diseases to people, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands after being around animals.
Is the coronavirus spread by insects? No. The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.
Should I avoid contact with pets or other animals if I am infected with COVID-19? You should restrict contact with pets and other animals while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus.

Basic Protective Measures
Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following precautionary measures against coronavirus. Here’s what you can do right now to stay safe…
444
Wash your hands frequently Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. It is also advised that sanitizer should contain “at least 60% alcohol” and that people should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.
Clean surfaces Clean surfaces — such as kitchen seats and work desks — regularly with disinfectant.
12 Bahrain Confidential April 2020
Avoid crowded areas Avoid crowded areas when going out, for people over 60 years old and people with any underlying health problems.
Practice respiratory hygiene Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. It is also advised to avoid touching the mouth, nose, or eyes when out and about, before having a chance to wash the hands.
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider
Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Call 444 and follow the instructions of the medical team.
Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Get accurate information by checking Bahrain Confidential and Gulf Insider’s website.

R
amadan is a celebration of faith and introspection; it is also a great time to keep fit and healthy in spite of the lavish feasts during this month. Bahrain Confidential’s Ramadan Guide will provide information and advice on maximizing health gain during the fast. The month of Ramadan is a great opportunity to focus on bringing back a balanced and healthy lifestyle in your life. Always remember: health is the key to happiness! Health and Wellness How does fasting affect the body? Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. For many people the key question regarding fasting is whether it is good or bad for your health. What happens to you body during a fast? During fasting hours when no food or drink is consumed, the body uses its stores of carbohydrate (stored in the liver and muscles) and fat to provide energy once all the calories from the foods consumed during the night have been used up. As the Ramadan fast only extends from dawn till dusk, there is ample opportunity to replenish energy stores at pre-dawn and dusk meals.
Benefits of fasting Through fasting you begin to learn how to manage your eating habits, how to improve self-control and discipline. Aside from this, it can also: • Can help you beat addictions. • It gives the digestive system a rest. • It is a great way to start a healthy diet. • Normalizes insulin sensitivity. • Promotes the detoxification process. • Can reduce your hunger levels
• It can boost the immune system. • Can reduce high blood pressure.
Possible remedies for side effects Depending on the weather and the length of the fast, most people who fast during Ramadan will experience mild dehydration, which may cause headaches, tiredness and difficulty concentrating. Here’s what you can do if you’re experiencing the following:
Heartburn (Indigestion) The stomach is an acidic environment, designed to digest food and kill bacteria. Fasting usually reduces the amount of acid produced, but thoughts of food or the smell of it makes the brain order the stomach

Feature to produce more acid. Hence if there is a net increase in acid, heartburn could be a problem during the fast. Remedy: Eating in moderation, avoiding oily, deep fried or very spicy food. Reducing caffeine intake and/or stopping smoking can also be of benefit.
Headache Headaches during a fast could commonly be due to dehydration or hunger, inadequate rest, or due to the absence of habits like coffee and cigarettes. Remedy: A healthy and balanced diet, adequate quantity of fluid, not exposing oneself to direct sunlight.
Breaking the Fast
Dehydration The body continues to lose water and salts through physical activities, weather conditions, and drinking habits. Remedy: Prevention is always better than cure. Adequately re-hydrate before a fast.
Stress Lack of food and water, changes of routine and shorter periods of sleep can all collude to increase stress levels. Remedy: Address any potential sources of stress in order to minimize harmful effects. This can be helped by not taking on more than you can reasonably handle, not playing sports in the hot sun and controlling your anger in advance.
Foods that harm and foods that benefit
Foods to Avoid
The fasts of Ramadan can improve a person’s health but - if the correct diet is not followed - can possibly worsen it! A sufficiently balanced will keep a person healthy and active during this month‌
Deep fried foods like samosas and fried dumplings
Suhoor
High sugar foods and sweets
Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal should be a wholesome, moderate meal that is filling and provides enough energy for many hours. It is therefore particularly important to include slowly-digesting foods in the suhoor.
Iftar Iftar is the meal which breaks the day’s fast. This meal could include dates, following the traditions. Dates will provide a refreshing burst of much needed energy. Refreshing ruit juices will also have a similar, revitalizing effect. The meal should remain a meal and not become a feast! Try to minimize the rich, special dishes that traditionally celebrate the fast and keep to the advice included in the table above.
High fat cooked foods and greasy pastries
Alternative Foods Whole grains like chick peas, baked samosas instead of fried and boiled dumplings Milk-based sweets and puddings Baked meats or homemade pastries
Fasting of the body is food for the soul." - John Chrysostom

Feature THE BIRTH
Dr Maimoona Liaqat
Planning for labour and birth While you are pregnant you should have a discussion with your healthcare professional about where you will choose to give birth. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may be advised to give birth in a consultant-led unit with easy access to medical support. Labour You may be offered a cannula (a fine plastic tube that is inserted into a vein to allow drugs and/or fluid to be given directly into your bloodstream) early in labour. If you are overweight, it may be more difficult for your healthcare professional to do this, which may lead to a delay if it is not done until it is needed in an emergency situation. All types of pain relief are available to you. However, having an epidural can be more difficult if you are overweight. You may be offered a discussion with an anaesthetist to talk about your choices for pain relief during labour. To reduce your risk of postpartum haemorrhage (heavy bleeding
Every woman wants to have a healthy pregnancy, but being obese puts moms and their babies at an increased risk for a host of complications.

after childbirth), your healthcare professional will recommend having an injection to help with the delivery of the placenta (afterbirth). After Labour By working together with your healthcare professionals, you can minimise the risks in a number of ways, as discussed below. If you developed high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, you are at increased risk of high blood pressure for a few weeks after the birth of your baby and this will therefore be monitored. To reduce the risk of a blood clot developing after your baby is born: • Try to be active as soon as you feel comfortable – avoid sitting still for long periods. • Wear special compression stockings, if you have been advised you need them • If you have a BMI of 40 or above, you may be offered bloodthinning injections (low-molecular-weight heparin treatment) for at least 10 days after the birth of your baby. n

HV Holistic Health -
The Immune boosting way of food With the Coronavirus being at the forefront of our minds, you should be reminded that one way of preventing the virus is leading a balanced lifestyle.
Y
our immune system, when kept strong through proper nutrition, will help your body to provide resistance to toxins and infections. When we look at the value of nutrition in health, you will find that when your body is sufficiently nourished, you are able to perform optimally. In a physical sense food gives your body the proper vitamins and minerals, as well as fuel to allow you to carry out your everyday activities, and fight against illnesses. In a psychological sense, it allows us to have optimal focus and productivity. Foods that have certain colours including, red, orange and green contain a lot of vitamin C, which also has a great effect on increasing your body’s natural ability to fight infection. Another interesting drink you can add to your meal plan is kefir, because it is not only good for boosting immunity but, also aids in protecting your gut, due to its probiotic nature. You may consider adding ginger to meals/drinks, because it has both anti-oxidant properties, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.
Add colour to your meals, each colour of fruits and vegetables contain different pigments, for example, blueberries have anthocyanins that reduce to the risk of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and neurological decline. Undernutrition is due to insufficient intake of energy and macronutrients or, possibly because of deficiencies in specific micronutrients. A lack of these nutrients suppress the immune functions that are imperative to host protection. This is why, now more than ever, it is essential that you take care of your health by making sure that you eat nutrient rich foods. Over-nutrition, on the other hand can also cause detrimental health effects and can lead to obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure and also affect your immunity against viruses and infections. For most food, moderation in intake is ideal for optimal immunity. n

Through the Lens Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahraini photographer, Mustafa Abdulhadi.

f you’re on Instagram, chances are you’ve already seen one of Mustafa Abdulhadi’s stunning photographs. In the recent years, Mustafa has dedicated himself to capturing cultures, traditions and everyday life through the lens. Not only does he take photos to show how he views the world, he also does it in the hopes to evoke a sense of story-telling; something that only a few learn to master. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to the Bahraini photographer… Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your background? I am a Bahraini photographer born in 1991. I am very interested and passionate in exploring and photographing various cities with different cultures and traditions. Through photography, I have participated in several local and international exhibitions. I have also won numerous photography competitions both local and international.
I am very interested and passionate in exploring and photographing various cities with different cultures and traditions.
Which photograph do you most identify yourself with? I cannot pick just one as every photograph represents a part of me. What does photography mean to you? What first drew you to take photos? Photography is my relief and my way to express myself. In short, it is my passion. Capturing a moment in time and keeping it, are what drew me most to photography. Also, my love for travel and interest in different cultures and traditions were a great motivator.

Photography is my relief and my way to express myself. In short, it is my passion. How important is it for photographers/artists to “connect” with their subjects? Connecting with people is highly important. One reason is to take permission and the other is to know their story. Street photography depends on one’s prospective and his/her ability to capture a moment. In my opinion, as a photographer, you must be friendly and cheerful in order to connect with people. Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I have to pick Manama as my favourite as it consists of different nationalities and people. Also, it represents a mixture between past and present. n www.mustafaphoto.com mustafa7photo@gmail.com @mustafaa7

The Art of

She is modern, fearless, confident and most importantly comfortable.
W
hat do you think makes Georges Chakra a distinctive successful brand in today’s overly crowded fashion world? We create pieces that last for years and can be passed down, which has actually happened a couple of times. We welcome creativity, originality, and focus on experimental new fabrics. The fast trends that consumers pass through don’t instigate loyalty and a feeling of Haute Couture, so we tend not to focus on them. We design to create art. What were the inspirations for your latest collection? Couture is art, and art is a big component of its surroundings. Lebanon lives in the deepest part of my heart, and it has its ups and its downs. It is very unpredictable, and the current ongoing situation is just how I see my brand. We are always changing, and re-shifting our focus to new things. It all took off from there: the fight or flight; the Lebanese joy of life; the love to create beauty despite the chaos and the destruction surrounding us.

Describe the Georges Chakra woman. She is modern, fearless, confident and most importantly comfortable. When thinking of fashion that transcends, what immediately comes to mind? How do your own designs transcend fashion? Fashion transcends time. Creating pieces that last for generations, and are passed down. The beauty of revisiting a 20-yearold gown for a client, and have her wear it for an event. My clients often tell me that they appreciate the creativity, the elegant originality, the experimental fabrics, but most of all they cherish the familial relationship with myself, my team and the designs we create for them.n

Saving Bahrain’s
Stray Dogs Bahrain Confidential speaks to Fathiya Al Bastaki, founder of Bahrain Strays (Dog Rescue).
C
an you tell us more about Bahrain Strays – what do you aim to achieve through this group? I started this cause back in 2012, when I found some stray dogs roaming around Segaya. Even though there were people around, no one bothered to help the dogs (some of them were whining in pain). Before this, I didn’t have any idea about stray dogs in Bahrain, let alone the horrible things happening to them. From that moment, I decided to spread awareness and help the stray dogs in the country. In 2013, I created a Facebook Page then later on an Instagram account, and a website. Soon enough, it has been followed by the compassion, generosity, hard work and drive of many other wonderful supporters and volunteers.
50 Bahrain Confidential April 2020
Feature Our purpose is to spread awareness about stray dogs, change the misconception about them and inspire more volunteers to step forward in helping take care of them. We’ve been receiving news about the inhumane treatment stray dogs in Bahrain are facing. How is Bahrain Strays helping improve the situation or preventing it from happening again? Over the years, we’ve witnessed a lot of inhumane things happening to our strays. Based on our research, these strays have been the reason of complaints, causing them to be dumped to Askar. Just recently, some people went to kill around 30 innocent dogs in the same area which just proves the cruelty these strays face.
Fathiya Al Bastaki
Barain Strays (Dog Rescue) is an initiative started by Fathiya Al Bastaki, a passionate Bahraini animal lover. Their mission is to engage the hearts, hands and minds of the Bahraini community to help the stray dogs due to the immense discrimination they receive. @Bahrainstrays +973 3967 5919
We’ve continuously been trying to destroy the misconception about stray dogs through our page. We post photos and videos online to show how lovely and harmless these dogs can be so that we can inspire other people to share some acts of kindness towards them.
How can residents help the Askar dogs? In order to do this, we need a group of volunteers to take care of our Askar dogs through: • Collecting food and visiting the location to feed the dogs. • Communicating different hotels, restaurants and establishments to collect food from them. Because of the lack of donations, we cannot fulfill the needs of a thousands of stray dogs which have been dumped there since 2018. • Pick up the wounded and sick dogs to the clinic and put them under the Bahrain Strays account. • Do CNR (Catch, Neuter, Release). That’s the most important thing to do so we can control overpopulation. In addition, residents may help by calling the municipality where they see the stray dogs. By doing this, the cleaners would visit the area and try to catch the dogs for CNR and relocated to Askar where we can take care if them. In case the cleaners don't show up, they can call us and we will try to catch them. n
