At A Loss For Words

Have you ever been under pressure to find words for an event with very little time available to plan? That’s is what is reflected in the following poem as David Hollywood recently prepared for a class he was to give on poetry appreciation while also wishing to quickly scribble and dedicate plus acknowledge the sentiment and potential for such a quandary. At a loss for words, With just hours to go, And a poem to write, But I scarcely know how.

GRAVITY INDOOR SKYDIVING Bahrain’s First Indoor Skydiving Centre Those living on the island can now get their adrenalin rush right where they are. The newly opened skydiving centre in Zallaq, close to Bahrain International Circuit, allows visitors to experience flying at high speeds in a state-of-the-art 12m high glass chamber accompanied by a fully qualified team of flight instructors.

talent

MY BAHRAIN An 18-year old, Communications student from Bahrain, Kawthar Fathalla is a self-taught guitarist and co-author of ‘5thbreakBahrain’. She has been a part of two small music bands and performed for a live audience too.

Favourite Music Artist

On herself

Independent. Ambitious/ Talented. Active/ Adventurous.

It’s hard to pick one so, let’s say I don’t have a ‘favorite’. I like and listen to any kind of music despite who the artist is and feel every song or genre has its own touch.

Proudest Moment

Presenting an action plan in Massachusetts State House at Boston.

Favourite Author

Gayle Forman, Richard Templar, and love a book I read of Richard Branson.

On her book

‘#5thBreak Bahrain’ is a foreign inspired concept. The entertainment book has a lot of games and fun activities as well as some traditional Bahraini stuff. I built on the content with three of my friends and though it started as a school project we want it to be popular in Bahrain.

Favourite Gadget

On Music I love exploring with instruments and have tried my hands at the piano, drums, bass and guitar. I feel I can find myself in music and enjoy it.

I’m an Apple fan so let’s say most apple products and music gadgets.

Season’s Fashion Picks

I love fashion and following trends. I think street style took over this season and will still be in vogue for the next season. My picks are a pair of nice sneakers, ripped jeans and mini backpacks or bags. Bahrain Confidential January 2016 15

THE FIRST BAHRAINI TO

CLIMB KILIMANJARO D onia, a 30 year old Bahraini Adventurer set off with his friend on May 26th, 2015 to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. The climb was successful and Ammr reached the summit on June 01st, 2015 at 07:48 am. Overall, the trek took a total of 7 days / 6 nights, which included approximately 45 hours of trekking 70 kilometers from start to finish. The Mountain stands at 5,895 meters and is the world’s tallest freestanding mountain and is also one of the world’s Seven Summits. It is also the highest point on the African continent, dubbed as the Roof of Africa. Ammr carefully chose to climb the mountain through Rongai Route, a camping route, and one of the 5 available routes to Uhuru Peak – the summit. It is the only route to breach the mountain from the North near Kenya and less popular due to its remoteness. “I am very happy and proud having reached the top; it’s another achievement for myself and a milestone adventure to mark more to come, Insha’a Allah. The climb was tough but thankfully we made it without any incidents or sickness. I cannot describe the overwhelming

16 Bahrain Confidential January 2016

sensation once the summit is reached. I broke into tears upon summiting, just as I have done previously on other peaks. Those were tears of joy, sadness, confusion and relief but also of selfachievement mixed with an extreme sense of fulfillment. Both the emotional and physical agony is immense but well worth the effort once the summit is reached. It seems therapeutic in a way and keeps me going.” “As a proud Bahraini, I raised the flag on top of Kilimanjaro and I hope to raise a few more flags on a number of peaks worldwide,” he said. “I only hope to join other internationally achieving individuals such as His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa and his team who continue to provide a positive image of Bahrianis worldwide,” added Mr. Donia. Mr. Donia is not the first Bahraini to have climbed Mt Kilimanjaro. Some of

the most inspiring no doubt are Parkinson’s patient Ahmed Jaffar, Shaikha Noora Al-Khalifa and Amal Al-Saffar to name a few. Ammr Donia discovered his passion for travel and adventure a few years ago. This has led him to quit his career as a Property Surveyor to establish his own adventure company to encourage travel off the beaten track. Ammr ended up backpacking continuously for 2 years and visited over 45 countries to date. He will attempt to visit 50 countries this year working towards his main goal of reaching 100 countries. He is also adamant to climb another mountain in the near future to break his previous altitude record on Kilimanjaro and cross 6,000 meters. Ammr previously climbed other mountains in the Himalayan region of Nepal including Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Kalapatar Peak and Gokyo Ri.

For more information you may contact Ammr Donia directly via whatsapp +97334335528 or email him at ammrdonia@gmail.com. You can also follow his adventures on Instagram and Facebook at Travel Duck Adventures

The Ancient Art of Combat Meet Omran A Rahman, a Bahraini Thai martial artist, and the first in the Gulf region to win a Muay Kardchuek match on an international level. Melissa Nazareth finds out how the boy who shied away from sports in school went on to become a Muay Thai master!

D

o you know that feeling where you’ve always known what you wanted to do in life? Me neither! Though I’ve always loved writing, I took up journalism, professionally, 5 years too late. In this interview, I discover that Omran is part of the same club. “When I was in school, most boys my age played football and basketball, and I didn’t understand much about the games,” the 25-year old tells me. “One fine day I was out with my friends and few of them were play-fighting. I observed one of my friends making moves using his elbows and was intrigued by it. Later, I found out

20 Bahrain Confidential January 2016

it was Muay Thai.” A huge fan of Sagat, the Muay Thai expert from Street Fighters, Omran decided to learn the art and the rest as they say is history. Another reason he was keen on pursuing Thai martial arts was self defense – “As a young boy, I had a knack of getting into trouble," he says, "and thought it would be best if I had a way to defend myself.” Omran started off with modern Muay Thai and eventually moved on to Muay Boran. “Most people are familiar with Muay Thai than with Muay Boran,” he tells me, “which is ironical because the former originated, in the 1930s, from the latter.” Omran conducted a lot of demos across

Bahrain to create awareness about this art form and tells me that gradually, people did start noticing and appreciating it. Aspiring to step-up to the next level, Omran did some research on Thai martial arts. “Generally, people learn Muay Thai and then jump to another style but I wanted to specialise in the Thai arts. I discovered Muay Chaiya, a pure and ancient style, which still exists (unlike most ancient forms which are dead owing to the evolution of Thai martial arts) and even went to Thailand to learn it from various masters.

feature Omran’s Club: Thai Martial Arts

“In 2013, I felt it was time to start my own club-concept and established Thai Martial Arts,” says Omran who was determined not to let the ancient arts die. “They were not too popular in Bahrain but I wanted to change that.” By now, Omran knew three styles – Modern Muay Thai, Muay Boran and Muay Chaiya – and felt compelled to share his knowledge. “I started my career as an instructor by teaching Modern Muay Thai, which though not too well-known, had been on the island for around seven to eight years,” he says. Omran’s club is not the first on the island to teach Thai martial arts but the first to train students in ancient styles. They conduct Calisthenics workshops too. “We brought Calisthenics to Bahrain and conducted our first workshop around a year go. Our athletes, who are part of the World Calisthenics Organisation, have won regional events, and one of our students even bagged second place in a Dubai event.

Muay Kardchuek

I ask Omran to tell me more about his experience in Thailand and the style of combat he used there. “Somewhere along the way during the development and evolution of Muay Boran, an innovative fighter decided to wrap his hands and Muay Kardchuek was born,” he says. Literally translating to “wrapped in twine boxing”, the practice caught on and varying wrapping styles and applications evolved. Some fighter’s wrapped only their hands while others covered their entire forearms. Omran goes on to tell me, “This style was popular with the kings who loved to watch it but isn’t widely practiced these days because it’s very dangerous. But I wanted to raise the bar for myself and see if I can survive it, so, I started looking out for an opponent in Thailand. After quite a search, I finally found a veteran Thai martial artist who has fought over 100 fights. Winning that match didn’t put just my country and me but also Muay Kardchuek in the spotlight.” Omran stresses on how rewarding it has been to have contributed toward creating and spreading awareness on ancient Thai art forms. “I started out with doing this for myself, I just wanted to challenge myself as a martial artist but it has ended up becoming more than that, the bigger picture is far better.”

Omran has been into the Thai arts for the past 8 years but believes he has a long way to go. “I try to train for at least 3 hours a day and travel to Thailand at least once a year so I can learn from various masters,” he says. In addition to training physically, Omran meditates as well and believes this is his biggest strength. “I’m constantly thinking of moves,” he says “for instance, how would I defend myself if I were in a particular situation; what would I do if I got tired during a match. It’s not about training hard but training smart!” We further discuss the Thailand match and I ask Omran what was running through his head at the time. “I wasn’t thinking about losing but about showing my style and moves to my opponent and audience. Omran was determined to present what he had learned and practiced over the years. Even though he bruised his leg during the first five seconds of the match, and couldn’t jump, walk or kick, he used his pre meditated move to win. Talking about Omran’s certifications and accolades, he tells me that for Muay Boran, there are levels called Mongols – the artist wears colourful bands, representing different levels,

around the head and arms. “I am a Mongol 12 and there are round 17,” he says. “I’ve even successfully completed a grueling 3-hour test during which I was asked to conduct a Muay Boran class. It was very detailed – I had to instruct in Thai and lead my students.” One of Omran’s students from that class is now a certified Thai martial arts referee. Presently, Omran currently conducts workshops in Ramli Mall, A’ali and Salmaniya as part of a sports club. “Martial arts is way of life and one of the best things you will do,” he says, adding that it's not only entertaining but healthy too: better stamina, greater flexibility, higher strength, sharper focus, perfect detoxification, improved blood circulation, fit body and more! If you’re looking to get in shape this season and want to try a move or two from the ancient Thai art of combat, you know the master!

Quick Five with Omran

A martial arts book you recommend: Thai Arts by Marco De Cesaris, an Italian explorer Your favourite martial arts movie: Ong bak 1 because it showed the world what Thai ancient arts are Top 3 fitness tips: Avoid junk food, drink lots of water and exercise at least thrice a week Favourite Thai word: "Kob khun" which means ‘thank you’, because one should always be thankful! Your favourite weapon during a martial arts fight: I love the elbows. No one really uses them otherwise but in the Thai arts, elbows and knees are key. Thai martial arts are based on the idea that once your sword is down; you need to use your body as a weapon! Bahrain Confidential January 2016 21

The journey so far… I have had a passion for fashion ever since I was a little girl and it has only grown with time. I pursued an Accounting and Finance degree from Greenwich University in London, after which I worked with one of the Big 4’s for four years. However, my love for styling and designing got me to start my own line, Lalla Eman. As I am half Bahraini and half Moroccan, I wanted to create a line, blending the best of both cultures. I opened my first store in… 2013! I started working from my home back in 2010. I turned the outdoor majlis into a mini store. My work was noticed in Bahrain and the region, which encouraged me to expand – set up my first store in Zayed Town. Since then, I have taken various courses at London Fashion College. I love to work with… At Lalla Eman, we always work with premium quality fabrics including taffeta, French lace and 100 per cent silk. Each Kaftan is handcrafted with custom Moroccan threads and buttons, specially made by ladies living in Morocco. Most of my designs are inspired by… Nature and art galleries because I’m fascinated by colors. I also like things that are complex, romantic, luxurious, and contemporary.

Top 3 fashion essentials this season? • The LBD, which can be accessorised with a scarf or statement jewelry piece. • Long waistcoats. They look great over a basic midi bodycon dress. • A pair of skinny jeans. They are absolutely awesome and go with everything and for all seasons. A morning and evening look for our readers… In the morning: Assuming it’s a casual day, I would go for skinny jeans paired with a jumper, beautifully embellished with beads and nude ballet flats. All night long: I would go for a silvery pleated skirt, white shirt and black leather jacket with red lipstick and hair tied in a ponytail. This with black high heels!

BEST Jeans are one of the trickiest clothing items ever, so here’s a guide to getting your best fit.

EANS

FOR YOUR BODY TYPE If you have an athletic figure… Try flared jeans, to make your legs look longer and leaner, while accentuating your waist. Also look for a stretch fabric that hug your curves without sagging or gapping anywhere. Look for a slim to the knee fit and a deep indigo rinse that has a streamlining effect on the thighs, while the flare at the bottom and longer hemline create the illusion of narrow calves. A medium rise and a curved waistband will give your body type a sleek look from torso to toe.

If you have belly pooch… Select a moderate rise, which is about eight to nine inches from crotch to waist. “The waistband should hit just below your belly button, so that it will cover your stomach, and rein in the problem area”. Look for a wide waistband and a bit of stretch, to provide a subtle, girdle like effect. Look for bootcut jeans. This style, which is cut generously around the waist, also has slightly flared legs to help offset width around the middle. The bootcut shapes itself offsets the tummy and does the dieting for you. Look for one with high-contrast stitching to help fake a waist. Try slim-cut dressy jeans. The cottonlined waistband rests softly against the stomach without squeezing the skin. Try jeans with a double-button waistband to ensure a holdyou-in fit.

40 Bahrain Confidential January 2016

If you have a flat butt.. Look for trim and tush flaunting jeans in a dark wash like indigo, with strategic accents like pockets that sit a little higher on your bum, which will make your rear end look rounder. Also look for decorative stitching on the back pockets which will plump up this area.

If you have a big butt… Try jeans with pockets that are positioned lower on the butt which will visually decrease a fuller fanny. A midrise flare cut minimizes it even more.

fashion

If you have thick thighs…

If you are tall… You can definitely rock long and lean straight legged styles—or go retro and try flared, 70’s inspired denim.

Look for stretchy flawfixers that are constructed for curve management to accommodate extra inches around the thighs. And go for deep, dark, rinses to add to the slenderizing effect.

If you have an hourglass figure…

If you are plus-sized… A darker rinse denim is the way to go—just make sure it’s either straight-legged (slightly form-fitting), or a trouser style, both of these are formfitting.

If you are pear shaped… Pear shaped girls with curvier hips should steer clear of anything super-tapered and go for a low-rise flare, or trouser style. This creates overall balance, which helps keep your hips looking slim and streamlined.

If you are petite… Petite girls should stick with a slim-cut pair of jeans. Try a cute bootcut, or cropped skinnies.

“You can be the chicest thing in a t-shirt and jeans it's up to you.” – Karl Lagerfeld

The curvier you are, the more you need jeans that are cut higher in the back to fit over your seat and keep you covered. To hold in and slim the thighs, look for a rigid fabric that has no more than 2 percent stretch. Since an hourglass shape is known for a small waist, look for a contoured waistband (you’ll notice a seam that indicates the waistband was cut on a curve and sewn together instead of being one piece of fabric), this will help reduce gaping. Try bootcut jeans as these arrow-straight shapes will skim your curves and won’t bare your backside. Look for a classic, widelegged trouser with a midrise and flat front which will keep you looking slim in all the right places—but still show off your curves. Fashionable wide legs offer a roomy fit for thighs. Try slim-cut, dressy jeans to flatter your hips. Choose a tapered leg instead of a skinny one, so you have more room for your thighs and ankles. The almost-straight, not ankle-hugging legs, make for a more wearable version of the skinny trend.

Pop Culture ME

Nadine Compton lists 6 things you can't miss taking on your next camping escapade. 3. A pillow. I brought a blanket and mattress pad (and a tent! I'm not that forgetful!), but no pillow. Sleeping on folded, dirty clothes just wasn't the same.

Those who know me well, or if I'm being honest, those who have just introduced themselves to me, know that I have a bad memory. Bad memory + planning for a camping trip = forgetting stuff. Learn from my mistakes and remember to bring these 6 items!

desert or not. I still had fun and have great stories to tell, but it would have been better if I wasn't scratching my legs like a maniac for three days after I got back.

4. Lactaid pills. For those like me who need help digesting dairy products (think anything with milk or its by-products), as I'm 99.9 per cent sure I'm lactose intolerant. I couldn't fully enjoy the breakfast of labneh, olives, cucumbers, and pita bread.

1. Mosquito Repellent. I thought to myself, we're not camping in a forest or near a lake so I should be fine. (Also I can count on one hand the times I've gone camping, so... yeah!) Needless to say, I wasn't fine. My white skin was bitten. My friend's brown skin was bitten. MOSQUITOES DO NOT DISCRIMINATE NOR DO I KNOW WHERE THEY COME FROM.

5. Wipes. Yeah, I brought hand sanitizer but that doesn't get rid of food stains on your hands. Did I mention that I'm clumsy too?

2. An instrument. I did the whole piano lessons and school band thing as a kid, but you can't exactly haul a piano to the desert nor bring your flute (how desperately uncool would that be anyways?). My friends sang or played the tablah and all I did was clap along. Also, uncool.

6. A fully charged phone. I figured that since there wasn't any reception, I wouldn't need it. But hey, we all know it's way easier to share photos that you've taken with your phone. So maybe you're not like me and have a fully functioning brain, but if you don't, then please read this list before you plan your next camping trip, whether it's in the

Switch on Your Self-awareness Rita Moussallem advises consciously affirming your identity as a soul. An important function of the intellect is to regulate state of awareness. You hold yourself in varying degrees of either of two possible states: the experiential identification with the self as a soul, and the experiential identification with the self as a body. In the original state of peace, purity, self-awareness and power, you are naturally conscious of yourself as a soul. The general condition of most people today is a state of depletion and so, it is normal to be conscious of the self as a body. Part of meditation practice is to monitor your own state of awareness and consciously affirm your identity as a soul. Identification with the body may be conscious or unconscious, but identification with the soul is conscious. It leads you to the inner experience of being essentially

pure and positive, inspiring you to act in a state of awakened self-awareness. Soulconscious means there is both intellectual and experiential consciousness of the self as a soul: being switched on. Body-conscious means the sense of self as a soul hardly exists and there is preoccupation with sense perceptions: being switched off. Your consciousness is aware and awake if you are switched on, and your intellect is sharp and bright. As your awareness moves towards body-consciousness, the light of the intellect becomes dimmer and switches off. Your spiritual effort is to be switched on, but as soon as you switch on, the timer starts ticking away and soon, it automatically switches off. The effort is to remain aware of your inner being and keep the light of awareness on. You accomplish

this by constantly being aware of yourself as a soul and attentive to your inner light.

Elephants Spill the Beans on Cancer-fight Elephants are giant, cancer-battling super creatures that destroy damaged cells long before they become cancerous, scientists say. The cancer mortality rate for elephants is less than 5 per cent compared with 25 per cent in people. Elephants have at least 40 copies of genes that code for p53, a protein well known for its cancer-inhibiting properties. In comparison, humans have only two copies of such genes. The animals also detect damaged cells preemptively, which they then repair or kill – killing the damaged cell is more effective than trying to stop a mutated cell from dividing.

Make Friends with Bacteria Friendly bacteria can act as a stress buster and improve mental health, research shows. A study of 22 healthy men found that volunteers who took a probiotic for a month experienced less daily stress than those given a “dummy placebo supplement. Tests also showed they performed better in a visual memory task. Previously the same team found that the bacterial strain Bifidobacterium longum 1714 reduced stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms and improved memory in mice.

Plastic Surgery Gives Breast Cancer-surviors, Hope Thanks to constant developments in plastic surgery, it is now possible to make breast cancer survivors feel better particularly through reconstruction surgery. Breast implant procedures implant silicon gel shells under the skin where the breast used to be. They are generally considered to be softer and feel more like breast tissue. Saline implants are filled with a salt-water solution and both pose very low health risks. Tissue flap surgery is another option, taking tissue from the stomach, back, thighs, or buttocks, and substituting for breast tissue and rebuilding the breast shape.

SEYCHELLES

There is more to it than beachy blues, Melissa Nazareth finds.

Kempinski Seychelles Resort

54 Bahrain Confidential January 2016

travel

W

hen my editor asked me if I’d like to go on a travel assignment to the Seychelles, I was ecstatic. I’ve heard so much about the islands’ pristine white-sand beaches and fresh seafood creations, and was finally going to experience them first hand. But when I got there I reaslied that there is so much more to the Seychelles than beachy blues and food.

has beautiful wooden floors, open-air seating by the sea and a varied selection of cocktails and snacks, making it a great place for aperitifs or a simple nightcap. Café Lazare, where we had breakfast has a lovely atmosphere too, and is open for dinner as well - its buffets spoil you for choice! On our last day here, we dined at the resort’s fine dining restaurant, L’indochine, which serves fresh, flavourful seafood.

After a luxurious flight, courtesy Etihad Airways, we reached the international airport in Mahé. Even though we flew in the wee hours of the morning, we were relaxed and comfortable thanks to the airline’s impeccable service and first class facilities. On the way to our first resort, we witnessed lush greenery blanketing mountains and hills; the winding, narrow roads punctuated by small shops, schools and churches brought back memories from my homeland in Southern India.

There was a line-up of activities that kept us entertained throughout our stay at the resort: a fun coconut show by an enthusiastic local, yoga atop a hill, feeding turtles and Kempinski Seychelles Resort’s customary cocktail evening – an appreciation night for guests, allowing them the opportunity to interact with the management.

Kempinski Seychelles Resort

The first thing you notice about this place is how beautifully it blends with the surroundings. In the Seychelles, all natural resources including the beaches are public property and no developments are permitted at the cost of destroying nature. The lobby overlooks the pool adjoining the beach and I loved sitting here, sipping on my coffee (or even a glass of premium grape), watching the skyline. The Seychelles’ sunsets are immaculate! The resort’s rooms and suites are equally spectacular with each of them offering either a hill- or sea-view. You can also choose rooms offering the sea garden-view where you can enjoy sitting in your very own private garden, leading directly to the beach. I’d like to particularly mention the remarkable service here. The staff and management are friendly and approachable – on the first day, I lost the way to my room and asked a local employee for help. Even though he didn’t quite follow what I was saying, he promptly arranged for his colleague to attend to me. The restaurants here serve delicious food, international and Creole, and their ambiance adds to the experience. We dined at Windsong Beach Restaurant, which

Sightseeing & Shopping

We started from the Victoria Clock Tower – a miniature replica of the one in London and prominent feature of the Seychelles’ small capital. Before we went to the market, we stopped by Creole Travel Services to exchange our euros/dollars for Seychellois Rupees because you don’t get this currency in Bahrain. Creole Travel Services is a destination management company offering varied services including travel advisory, ground handling, sea and land transfers or excursions, and groups and incentives event management. Mahe’s busy and colourful market is a great way to get a feel for the Seychellois and their way of life. Built in 1840 and renovated in 1999, it remains the bustling heart of the capital and definitely the best place to buy fresh fruits, fish, vegetables and spices. You can even pick souvenirs here to take back home – scented soaps, key chains and show pieces to fabric bags, clothes with traditional prints and jewellery boxes made of shells. You also get replicas of the coco de mer (read sea coconut), a native species.

The H Resort Beau Vallon Beach, Seychelles

On the morning we moved to the magnificent H Resort, we also had a boat trip planned. A quick check-in later, we sailed into the azure blue sea and spent a few hours on Silhouette Island, 20km northwest of Mahé. The swimming and

snorkeling worked up quite an appetite and we enjoyed a delicious BBQ including the fish we caught during the boat ride. That evening, Ripples Bar, back at the resort, hosted us to signature cocktails, which was followed by dinner at Vasco’s, the resort's main restaurant. We had our breakfast here as well. Vasco’s contemporary décor coupled with Mediterranean flair offers a lovely ambiance and the buffets serve international cuisine, themed with Seychellois and local Creole offerings. A team of locals entertained us with music and dance, and I tried the traditional Sega too! We decided the night is still young and hopped to Tequila Boom Discotheque for a taste of the islands’ nightlife. It is right opposite the H Resort at Bel Ombre in the Beau Vallon area. The club is pretty basic but has a huge dance floor and the music is peppy too – I liked the experience despite not being a party animal. The last day at the H Resort was reserved for relaxation with yoga and a rejuvenating spa treatment as Sesel spa. Christened after the Creole name of the Seychelles, the spa has a total of 7 treatment rooms, 5 single, 2 couple rooms and 1 Vichy Hydrotherapy

room as well as a salon for nails, hair and other aesthetic treatments. We could choose our treatment and I went in for the Sans Souci (no worries) distress massage. It was revitalising and after all the running around and tanning, it was just what I needed. After a sumptuous lunch of burgers and grills at Eden, a beachside sanctuary with a beautiful view of Beau Vallon Beach, we were given a tour of the resort. Exquisitely designed, the 100 well appointed suites, villas and grand villas offer guests the best in luxury and hospitality. All villas are by the beach and include additional exclusive features like a private pool, deck, cabana with direct access to the beach, outdoor rain showers, espresso machine and butler service. I was lodged at one of junior suites, equally luxe and lovely. Our final pitstop before heading to the airport was the good old Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke market for one last round of shopping. After that we went to what we unanimously agreed is the most beautiful spot on Mahé island, View Point. Offering an uninterrupted, magnificent view of the man-made island, Eden, this is just the sweet note I wanted to end my trip on!

2016 NISSAN MAXIMA

The launch of the latest Maxima is a big deal for Nisssan. It is a car they expect to sell in large numbers, and so there is a highly competitive market. By Nick Cooksey

his is the eighth-generation Maxima and thanks to more aluminum and high-strength steel, the new Maxima is considerably lighter and more economical than the previous model it replaces. And there are many other differences. And they are all good! First the engine and transmission – this car is noticeably fast. The gearless CVT transmission provides an impressive

300 horse power from a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that can let a driver hit 100 kph in just 6.5 seconds. CVTs seem to just keep getting better (if you still don’t know what CVT is and want to know, just Google it). The fiendishly clever transmission is fully computerized. If you didn’t know this, you would be forgiven for thinking that it is YOU bringing out the best in the car, but in addition to

Normal and Sport modes, the CVT offers 6 variables-accelerator-pedal position, road grade, acceleration and cornering g’s, road speed, and braking g’s-which determine how the car reacts. When driven hard the engine growls like a big cat thanks to “Active Sound Enhancement”, a common feature on many of today’s luxury sports cars.

The Maxima is front-wheel drive, has fully independent suspension, disc brakes all around, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels as standard, with 19-inch variants on some models. The sporty SR model features paddle shifters, and sport-tuned suspension with a chassis damper like that used in the 370Z NISMO. The car has a classy interior and buyers can decide between several trim levels. There’s a cockpit-styled dashboard that cocoons the driver, a flat bottom steering wheel, an 8 inch center touch screen, a center storage bin that serves as a convenient elbow rest. The leather is beautifully stitched, and in the back the seats are split-folding. Full feature options offer a dual-panel panoramic moonroof, heated and cooled seats, an eleven-speaker Bose audio with active noise cancellation, leather upholstery, LED projector headlights, ambient LED lighting, intelligent cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forwardcollision warning, and automatic emergency braking when a crash is imminent. An array of cameras and sonar detectors provides 360-degree exterior monitoring with moving-object detection. The list of high tech gadgets just goes on and on. And if the driver steers in an erratic manner, a dash alert lights up to say “Take a Break?” All Maximas come with the usual safety features, including seat-mounted and roof-mounted side-impact airbags.

Starting Price: BD11,050

If enough drivers care about luxury/ value over ‘brand labels’ there’s much here to give many of the top brand car manufacturers some sleepless nights.

In addition to the excellent engine and transmission, I like the aggressive, sculptured, muscular design of this car, with its chunky, angular elements that seem more appropriate to an SUV, and with the downward sloping ‘Fastback” roof. In both front and back there’s a good amount of head and leg room, even for large sized adults. Space in the boot is also generous, and there’s lots of little storage pockets and bins throughout. The car is spacious, comfortable, filled with technology and high quality components, fast, offers a very good driving experience, and is reasonably priced. If enough drivers care about luxury/value over ‘brand labels’ there’s much here to give many of the top brand car manufacturers some sleepless nights.

opinion

GULF IN A TEA CUP The recent renaissance of this quintessentially English pastime has ferried it onto a completely different dimension, says Aiste A Daubaras.

O

h… Snow, frost and joys of winter wonderland ... well at least it is in a good old Europe judging by copious FB posts. And although we all live very happily here on this charming little island, enjoying the sun, the seabreeze, watching tiny fishing boats sail into the sunset, one can not help but get every now and then a little bit nostalgic for the wintry mist, cozy fire and , inevitably, a nice cup of tea. Though to be honest, I began to suspect that a proverbial 'nice cup of tea' is actually an urban myth. In a rush of ones day it is usually a hasty 'teabag-dunked-into-a-mug' affaire. And of cause one occasionally visits grand establishments renowned for their afternoon tea. But inevitably I always end up looking (and feeling) like some throwback from the golden era, chasing the goneby days that no longer exist. You see, the recent Renaissance of this quintessentially English pastime inevitably ferried it onto a completely different dimension, and not always for the best. Unfortunately, some old traditional hotels nearly turned into the Disneyland for tea-takers, others (quelle horror) came up with preposterous 'Preta-Porte tea' idea, with cakes shaped like handbags or hats. And even the grandest

old institutions inevitably got infested with nouveau rich insolence. So, when Four Seasons Bahrain asked me to review their Afternoon tea service, I eagerly accepted, already composing a mental list of possible wrongs. Except to my great disappointment and somewhat belated joy, the said list had to go straight to a mental rubbish bin. Surprisingly how, without strenuous effort to imitate or outdo the original concept, they managed to get it right. Elegant but not too stuffy décor (subtly embellished with classic music), wisely selected tea menu, excellent offering of delicious dainty cakes and sandwiches. And quite unexpectedly, adding certain oldfashion genteelness to the overall ambiance, were regal figures of couples in national dress soundlessly moving about, like ghosts of perished Edwardian nobility. Not a single bare midriff, nor a ripped pair of jeans or flashy shopping bag in sight! Evidently respect for tradition and modesty has its visible advantages. (Even my pearls looked very much in place! ) So, not a single flaw, you might ask? Well technically yes, a few remarks. One for

instance, was the size of an egg sandwich. According to (my imaginary) "Afternoon Tea Bible", tea sandwiches should be eaten in two bites. But I almost did not dare to mention this tiny discrepancy, as their version was filled with black Truffle shavings...so sinfully delicious... that I nearly asked for more. Imagine how one finds the best egg sandwich in the world...in Bahrain, out of all places! Could it be a case of pupil outgrowing his master, I wonder....

The Best & The Rest We ran a reader poll to recognise the best restaurants on the island. After going through all your emails, 1 reader was selected at random to enjoy a dinner for 2 at one of Bahrain’s popular restaurants. HOW TO MASTER THE 20 MOST IMPORTANT MINUTES OF THE DAY By John Meyer

1. Write the 8 goals I want to accomplish that day. I figure if I can’t get 8 things done in an 8 hour day, then I’m doing the wrong things. 2. 6 goals are professional and 2 are personal. Personal goals include things like going for a run or having a date night with my wife. 3. Next morning, check off the goals accomplished, see how I did, reassess and then create a new list for the day. 4. On Saturdays, flip the ratio and set 6 personal goals and 2 professional goals, which may be as simple as paying the bills. This is an effort to encourage weekend fun and discourage weekend work.

W

hat are the most important moments of the day? The 20 minutes you commit to planning. I’m not talking about writing a business plan or setting annual goals. I’m simply talking about dedicating 20 minutes to prioritizing and organizing your day. The 20 minutes you spend today can save hours tomorrow and turn a good day into a great day. The most valuable resource

we have is time. So stop giving it away to people and spending it on activities you don’t care about. People say if only there were more hours in the day, they could get everything done. But what about those two hours spent watching TV. Or that hour-long meeting that achieved nothing? Today I completed my morning planning for the 504th time. It’s a daily routine of mine that is now a programmed habit. I call it my “8 for the Day.” The process is simple:

On Sundays (or Friday in the Gulf), there is no list making. I need time to rest and a day free of lists. Committing 20 minutes a day (sometimes less) to setting daily goals and organizing priorities has been so beneficial to my work, personal life, and overall health and well-being. The “8 for the Day” exercise is something I created that works for me, but there are other great tactics for planning your day. Choose or create a system that works for you. The point is not when you plan your day, just that you do it.
