Wedding What can a couple expect when working with you? My client expectations and desire are what’s most important. I have an inclusive approach and involve the couple in the process; I always see to it that I meet them for a chat to better know them and share ideas. Time is essential, so they can always expect a timely hand-over of the images. Can you share a little about what you aim to capture on pre-nuptial photo shoots and weddings? When I do a pre-nuptial photo shoot, I usually recommend a theme that’s closest to the couple (ie. hobbies they do together, where & how they met etc.) as I want it to be as natural and realistic as possible. But then again it always depends on the chosen theme of my clients. What is important is that they are comfortable and that they enjoy the whole process and think less of it as a photoshoot. With weddings, as I mentioned earlier, my goal is to capture the highlights and emotions of the event. What technology/equipment do you use to shoot weddings? For equipment/technology, I make sure that I use the best equipment that the market has to offer. I use a Full Frame camera

hat was your career path? How did you get from being an aspiring photographer to actually doing it full time, for a living? Currently, I aim to enhance my knowledge in events and lifestyle photography. I started photography as a hobby in 2009. I was a member of a local photography group (Middle East Shutter Squad & Gulf Photographer Network) back then and it’s where I learned much of the basics from fellow members. Then I became more interested of it so I started doing my own research to gain further knowledge until I eventually become inclined to events particularly wedding. What do you say is your stylistic approach to weddings? My goal is to capture the highlights and emotions of the event. I want my bride and groom to have photos that would remind them of the story behind every image and bring back fond memories.

Wild Carrot During our visit, we dined at Wild Carrot for lunch. As soon as we walked in, the beautifully-designed interiors immediately caught our attention. The weather wasn’t great when we arrived (typical British summer!) – however, we were seated by the window where we admired the picturesque English countryside and could see for miles. Wild Carrot serves seasonal, natural, locally sourced ingredients from Hampshire markets and farther afield. A first look at the menu revealed that it was elegant without being fussy. Our culinary adventure commenced with a vibrant choice of starters that included what was our favourite on the day - country fried chicken! It was a perfect balance of crispiness on the outside and tenderness on the inside. This wasn’t a dish we were expecting to see on the menu of a Four Seasons restaurant but it worked wonderfully. We’d go back in a heartbeat just for this dish.

If it’s artisanal concoctions and craft cocktails that you’re after, The Bar at Wild Carrot will satisfy your thirst. Meanwhile, those who want to slow down and unwind can enjoy afternoon coffee or tea at The Library or Café Santé.
The main courses were fresh and tasty. We had the ‘Dingley Dell pork belly’; the meat was slow roasted and a beautiful golden brown crackling on top. We savoured it with spring cabbage and mustard. The ‘Seared salmon with asparagus, oranges and vanilla mayonnaise’ was nothing short of extraordinary. As for the sweet finish, we had the choice of tiramisu, rice pudding and blueberry cheesecake… which one did we go for? All three. The service was genuinely some of the best we’ve experienced. Our waiter, Gianmarco along with the sommelier, Sandro made sure that each of our needs was catered to. They knew the menu inside-out, made solid recommendations and tailored our dining experiences, they also catered very well for dietary requirements as one of our group was Vegan, and had prepared a special vegan menu for her – this was a nice touch. The restaurant boasts a large open kitchen where we were able to see the chefs’ magic in action. An outdoor seating area with lush foliage is also available for these warmer summer months – when the sun is out, that is. Overall, we had an exceptional experience at Wild Carrot – from attention to detail and fantastic service, to small touches and gorgeous ambiance. It was a lovely place to unwind with friends and loved ones. n

Through belly dancing, you can train your muscles, strengthen your core, develop flexibility and achieve graceful body coordination. Believe it or not, belly dancing is one of the best ways to burn calories while offering great body-mind-spirit integration. The classes at bfit Health Club were really fun and a lot more easier than we thought it would be. Andrea (@andrhaya), along with the other dancers who are a part of Brazil Oasis Bahrain (@ braziloasis), did a magnificent job at getting the group engaged, so there was no reason to be shy. We were enthusiastically taught some moves that were fun to practice at home too! The hotel has one of the island’s premier fitness center offering professional advice and supervision. The health club has a gym, spa and pool. Memberships are available monthly, quarterly and yearly for singles, couples and families. Overall, it was a really exciting experience. heraton Bahrain Hotel was officially opened to the public on December 16, 1981 which coincides with the 10th anniversary of Bahrain’s Independence Day. A firm called Rader Mileto took one year to produce the design for the hotel and Taylor Woodrow International was appointed as a contractor to build the hotel. The land where the hotel was built was reclaimed from the sea in 1976 and the building of the hotel began in 1977. Since then, the hotel has played a major role in uplifting the island’s luxury hospitality scene. Sheraton Bahrain Hotel is currently doing a renovation of the entire property. The renovation is a key milestone for this iconic hotel in Bahrain and reiterates its commitment towards creating an elevated brand experience for guests. n

D
id you study art formally? Tell us about your education and training. I spent three years in the College of Architecture at Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines. Soon after, I realized that I’m not enjoying it anymore so I continued at University of Santo Tomas’ College of Fine Arts where I got my degree in Fine Arts major in Advertising. After a while, I moved to Saipan, USA as a graphic artist in 1993 then travelled back and forth to Guam. These countries immersed me and brought me into art exposure.

ART How have your roots as a Filipino influence your artworks? Filipinos by nature have strong skills for art. As a Filipino, I was really influenced by the masters; one of them is Fernando Amorsolo who captivated me with his realistic paintings mixed with impressionism. Juan Luna and his famous “Spoliarium” also inspired me. Somehow, I want to keep their traits as an artist. However, I must nail my own identity of how passionate and how diligently I can work with my pieces. What’s inspires you as an artist? I would like to define myself as an artist and as a mentor. What really inspires me as an artist is being a Filipino. Since childhood, it has always been my dream to bring pride not only for my family but also for my country. I want to contribute somehow in uplifting the morals of my own countrymen specially when I am staying in a foreign land. Hearing “Pinoy ‘yan!” or “Proud to be Pinoy” gives me a good feeling, really. As a mentor, my What do you remember as your first work of art? When I was 12 years old, I did my first mural on a 4x8 wood panel. The painting was a depiction of Philippine history using enamel paint; acrylic was not a famous medium at that time. Can you describe your painting process, how do you know that your painting is finished, how long does it take? My process always depends on circumstances like competitions, exhibitions or commissions. Nevertheless, I always keep my style unique and enhance each piece with different collaborations of mediums. In competitions, the process is faster so acting fast is required. For exhibitions and commissions, proper planning and time management are needed to meet the deadline. I can tell when my artworks are finished based on my inner feelings and satisfaction. There were times I made my paintings sit for a while. I study my work based on what needs to be done, what needs to be included and what needs to be rectified.

ver the past two decades, Madan Perattur has been a popular name in the hospitality industry. Madan is frank about his humble beginnings from a professional boxer and martial arts instructor to what he is today. Currently, he owns a hospitality management firm, Remya Management with his partner Sha. He also co-owns Miami Events Bahrain which brings never-before-seen acts to the island. “Apart from being a professional boxer, I always have the thought and feeling of wanting to work in the hospitality field and entertainment business”, Madan said. In 1998, he started his first job in a hotel in Dubai. Soon after, he moved to Bahrain in 1999 and worked for Dadabhai Group of Hotels.

Madan is a very active individual; he works for 16 to 17 hours a day with no off days. When he’s not busy working, he goes to the gym build his stamina and improve his fitness. To make up for the long hours, he makes it a point to travel around the world with his family every three months.

Madan continues to educate himself with the latest trends in hospitality and business management. Having travelled numerous countries in Europe, Asia and America, he has acquired some invaluable insights that he reflects in managing hotels, clubs, restaurants and more. In the next few months, he is looking forward to bringing in some popular international artists to Coral Bay. In terms of the hospitality industry, Madan has a very positive outlook. When asked about his views on the constant increase of hotels and the low demand, he commented “You cannot say that there’s no business. If you focus on the guests’ wants and needs, there will always be something to offer”. He also believes that Bahrain’s tourism sector is doing their part in bringing in visitors from all over the world.

I’m proud to announce the launch of our upcoming restaurant, ‘Crossroads’ towards the end of November. The idea behind Crossroads derives from its literal meaning – “at a point of change”. The restaurant will be a bright, modern and cozy rendezvous where guests can experience a wonderful change in their day – a more refreshing start of day after breakfast, a more inspired working hours after a well-deserved lunch break or a relaxing and indulging dinner after a busy day in the office. “Urban Natural” is our main theme in terms of design. It is modern, fresh and yet it will still give you

the warmth that you look for in a restaurant. The food, on the other hand, will be international cuisine with an urban flare. I do not want to ruin the surprise but we will have special treats for coffee lovers and non-meat eaters! What is your action plan for the upcoming months? Our properties have always seen a busy fourth quarter with numerous upcoming events and conferences. This period is also eventful due to the projects we are working on like the launch of Crossroads. I’m also happy to announce that we are finalizing the design of our room renovations, which we’ll start in 2020. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Being in the hospitality industry and with Marriott particularly most of my life, I’m going to have to quote Mr. J. Willard “Bill” Marriott. “Motivate them, train them, care about them, and make winners out of them... they'll treat the customers right. And if customers are treated right, they'll come back.” Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I like the Fort and the Old Souq – these places remind me why I love Bahrain so much. They have a unique charm with their well-preserved culture and history. n

The Bahrain Pavilion at La Biennale, aims to strengthen creative links between France and Bahrain, promoting cross cultural dialogue. Two of the unique features of the Bahrain presence at the show, were an exhibition of The Pearl Room which used rare artefacts and pearl jewellery from the House of Mattar Jewellers, to illustrate Bahrain’s pearling heritage and history. There was also the screening of a specially produced film called “Coming of Age” written by Latifa Al Khalifa and directed by Giles Cayette. Conceptualised and curated by Kaneka Subberwal, the film is an eloquent tribute to the art heritage of Bahrain. This will be the second time that Art Select has taken Bahraini artists to Paris, having organized a hugely successful Bahrain Art Week in Paris at exactly the same time last year. n

How to get back into a routine This month HV are giving you tips on how to get back into a routine after summer.

et your sleeping pattern right, by making sure that you set a specific time each night that you go to bed, and wake up. We recommend that the ideal time to sleep is between 10:30 pm and 6:30am. Sleep is so important for mental alertness during the day.
Set small daily, weekly and monthly goals, and reward yourself for reaching them.
Make sure that you organise your things for work the day before, and map out the direction of your day. Take 10 minutes to visualise your life goals, plan and schedule your breaks, and review your tasks. This will allow you to have a more manageable day, and plan more effectively in the future. Eat balanced meals containing all the nutrients your body needs. Make sure that you have at least 2 servings of fruit, and 5 servings of vegetables. Food forms a big part of your routine, and can increase your mental and physical functioning.

Make exercise part of your routine, whether it’s done in the morning, or evening. This allows you to stay rejuvenated and energised. It doesn’t have to be something intense. You could go for a walk, jog, cycle or swim. ell us a bit about yourself and your background. Did you study music formally? Is music something you’re passionate about? How did you get into this field? I am an artist based in Bahrain. After being a banker for 6 years then owning an advertising agency, I never found any self-fulfillment in the corporate world. Music has always been a passion and was something I wanted to pursue further but was afraid of what the society might think. After being casted on one of the most famous Talent Music Shows in the Region, I realized that perhaps it wasn’t too late. In August 2018, I launched my first single, “Shou Helou Nihna”.

Tell us about your latest single and your collaboration with Universal Records MENA? I signed with Universal in June 2019 and was very blessed to collaborate with one of the biggest labels in the world. It’s an honor to be the first female GCC national to be able to do that.
What’s next for Banah? I will be heading out to various countries in the region for a mini media tour. Towards the end of October – I will be preparing for the next single which I plan to launch in December 2019. In terms of events and concerts – I am preparing for something in Bahrain before the end of the year, and I will also have my first concert in Jordan in October 2019. n

hen it comes to fine dining, Bahrain offers a plethora of culinary delights. This island is awash with remarkable chefs well-versed in serving up fancy cuisine. However, none of these restaurants captivated us like Mahonia did. Nestled in the heart of Bahrain’s fashionable dining district of Adliya, Mahonia ushers in a new era of fine dining with its gastronomic degustation menu concept unlike any other in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf. Just recently, we had the chance to try this Bahrain’s Best Restaurants Awards winner.
The restaurant only has seven tables and offers guests ever-changing menus. During our visit, the latest menu was inspired by the Kingdom of Bahrain – offering dishes that draw from the island’s rich heritage. We tried deliciously refined dishes, like the ‘Mother of Pearl’, a white gazpacho sphere with sea herbs, caviar and sand made from miso oil. The ‘Salted Hamour Baradade’ with hazelnut, lemon and dill was nothing short of fantastic. Each course went further to excite our taste buds and imagination. Apart from the magnificent culinary adventure, Mahonia’s lavish design and sophisticated interiors elevated our experience. The restaurant is ornamented with plush furniture, priceless works of art adorning the walls, handmade Murano glass sculptures and impeccable tableware. Endlessly elegant and mind-blowing, only a few things quite match the opulence of sitting down at Mahonia. övenpick Hotel Bahrain is inviting international guests and local residents to come savour the tastes and flavours of the Mediterranean this autumn with the launch of its latest global menu – ‘Pesto and Pistou’.
Pesto and pistou are two versions of a flavourful sauce based on basil, olive oil and cheese. Marking another gastronomic triumph for a brand synonymous with culinary excellence for more than 70 years, the expert chefs at Mövenpick have perfected a new innovative range of pestos (Italian) and pistous (French) to create seven experimental dishes, throughout October 2019. Chef Iain Joyce, who heads the culinary team at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, will lead the kitchen in

preparing the pesto and pistou based dishes. These two classic European sauces are both based on the aromatic herb, basil, which is harvested in late summer. Savoury favourites will include seared Ahi tuna with olive and eggplant pesto and seafood soup with tarragon pistou. For dessert, a sweet treat with a real difference – Bundt cake with chocolate-mint pesto, served alongside a frothy Mövenpick Espresso. Pesto and pistou are two versions of a flavourful sauce based on basil, olive oil and cheese. Italian pesto, which originates in Genoa, the capital city of Liguria, Italy, is blended from garlic, basil, pine nuts, grated pecorino cheese (or sometimes parmesan) and olive oil while its French cousin, pistou, is a Provençal cold sauce with similar ingredients, but without the pine nuts and with or without cheese. checked the place out after seeing videos of their ‘Slidezilla’ tower of sliders on Instagram! Southside prides itself for being the island’s first retro games restaurant. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with large cutouts of the restaurant’s characters: Low Rider, Hotzi, Buffalo Bill, The Mac and Bubba Q (each character has a corresponding signature burger!). Nostalgia slowly sneaked in as we inspected the small space – old school board and video games were on display along with a clash of Mexican decors.
In the end, we definitely agreed with their tagline… so delish!

I like implementing ideas out of the box and I don’t think there is anything I dislike about it. Biggest lesson in life: Not to underestimate your capabilities. Joining Ferrari with a completely different marketing strategy and target market was the biggest challenge that I overcame. I am currently qualifying for the world
