The Quick Dish Why turn to the land for food, when we can turn to the surrounding seas! The waters around Bahrain are rich with grouper, shellfish and more. So, I decided to venture into the kitchen to make a favourite dish of mine, Linguini Vongole. This Italian pasta dish puts clams as the star, which is a great choice when we have them available in Bahrain year round. I like a recipe that doesn’t call for too many ingredients or require hours trawling around supermarkets. The homegrown app @fishtransporter is ideal for when you’re shopping for fish, as it cuts out the middleman and delivers from the fisherman straight to your door. I’ve adapted the recipe from a Jamie Oliver version. Do prepare as much beforehand as this is a quick recipe, which will require you to do some juggling (though it will be worth it!).  1 kg small clams  ½ a bunch of fresh parsley  4cloves of garlic  10 cherry tomatoes  250 ml white wine (or a non alcoholic version if you prefer)  400 g dried spaghetti  Olive oil  Dried chili flakes

1. Boil water in a pan, suitable for the spaghetti. 2. While that is happening, finely chop up the parsley stalks and in a separate bowl roughly chop the parsley leaves. 3. Peel the garlic, chop the tomatoes into quarters and measure out your wine. 4. Add the spaghetti to the boiling water with a pinch of salt. 5. When the spaghetti is about 6 minutes from ready, heat up a large pan and add a few glugs of olive oil. Add in the garlic, parsley stalks and the chili flakes. Add in the tomatoes, salt and pepper. Give it a few good stirs and after about 4 minutes, add in the clams and wine. Put the lid on, but keep giving it a shake. After 3-4 minutes the clams will start to open. Remove the pan from the heat. 6. Drain the pasta and add it to the pan of clam. Top with some of the parsley leaves and a few drizzles of olive oil, tossing them together. 7. Serve immediately! Don’t forget a stick of baguette for mopping up the juices. n

any restaurants are special, but some are extra special. For the first time, we can properly honour these establishments, and the people behind them, as judged by those in the best position to know. To ensure that our selection is authentic, Bahrain Confidential asked the best people in Bahrain to act as our judges for this. Namely, the leaders of Bahrain’s 5 Star hotels. Because it is required of them to know inside out what makes any restaurant special. The leaders of Bahrain’s 5 Star Hotels voted just 12 winners.

Taiwan

Part 1

Yulia Trubnikova shares her travel experience to the mythical land of Taiwan. Suspension bridge in Taroko National Park

An Undiscovered Bounty

W

hen I was invited to a trip to Taiwan in October organized by Taiwan Tourism Bureau I got immediately excited! I truly love to discover uncommon places and this was the perfect chance to! Nevertheless, I don’t know much about Taiwan. This country doesn't often cross the minds of people choosing their next vacation spot and for that… they are missing a lot! This stunning island, like a little jewel located between Japan and Philippines has absolutely pristine nature, ancient culture, authentic activities and great cuisine. I’ve been saying “OMG” throughout the entire trip! Taiwan is a highly recommended place to visit and this series will tell you why!

Nature Taiwan has been formed 6 million years ago by the movement of two tectonic platforms where it got its breathtaking landforms. It’s covered by lavish green mountains with crystal clear turquoise rivers, mountain lakes and rocky cliffs surrounded with a beautiful ocean. Wherever you go, there is an abundance of breathtaking view – from sky scraping mountains, dramatic clouds and tea fields to powerful ocean waves, green valleys, and even a volcano! How about that? The Sun Moon Lake is one of the must-see places. Located in a very center of the island in Yuchin Township, is the largest water

Travel reservoir of Taiwan 748 m above the sea. It’s a beautiful lake surrounded by misty mountains. The water is really clean, and the air is so fresh I’ve got vertigo for a minute. The place offers an express boat trip to a station for a ropeway to Formosa Aborigine Cultural Village. It takes around 7 breathtaking minutes in a cable car to the village and gives you the most stunning views over the lake. Formosa Aborigine Cultural Village occupies a massive piece of land over the mountains and offers the hotels, restaurants, amusement park, amphitheater with performances and lots of other entertainment.

providing natural hot springs SPA and we’ve stayed in one of them. The brand new 5 star Valletta Hotel in Jiaoxi Township was our first accommodation upon arrival. Lucky us it has an extensive hot springs SPA complex with hydrotherapy and it was the best feeling to soak ourselves in a hot water after a long flight. Another thing is achieving a piece of mind. This country doesn't often cross the minds of people choosing their next vacation spot and for that… they are missing a lot! “What a beautiful view” and it’s a well deserved name! Mountain peaks over 3000 m, picturesque waterfalls, teardrop-clear Liwu River with the Bridge of 100 lions over it, spectacular Taroko Gorge, Qingshui Cliff, the highest Taiwan’s coastal cliff with the dramatic Pacific Ocean views, Taroko Aboriginal Village laying in a valley between the mountains, providing an authentic experience and absolute tranquility is just a few not to be missed places while in Taroko National Park.

Wellness Thanks to a volcanic origin Taiwan has many hot springs especially in the East in Yilan area. The locals say hot springs promote health, youth and wellness. There are numerous hotels

Sun Moon Lake own river. Total bliss!. There are so many soothing the eyes places across the country where you can meditate and get an inner piece. One of my favorite spots was to observe an endless ocean with people surfing on the coastline of Yilan Northeast of Taiwan and a view to a Turtle island which is in fact a volcano. Another memorable view was in Jiufen near Taipei. The view onto the mountains of different heights and shades of mute grey joining the ocean is just truly relaxing. At that moment, I found myself saying “there can be no stress in the country with such views”! n

Stay tuned for the 2nd part of my Taiwan series next month where I’ll share stories about their amazing culture and cuisine!

What is Beauty Part II Last month in What Is Beauty Part I, I opened a discussion on society’s understanding and values surrounding what denotes beauty. If the ancient Greek philosophers to the present day academics have struggled to define beauty as either subjective or objective with it being perhaps the single most-prosecuted disagreement in the literature I think I might have a little trouble too, but here goes. I previously discussed the aesthetics side of beauty and how across cultures, specific physical beauty traits can be templated down to the Golden Ratio equation, but value can also be considered, ultimately in the eye of the beholder. This month I want to delve a little deeper than skin to dissect a more over what makes someone or something deserving of the title of beauty. When it comes to beauty in a person, I think of their personality, integrity, nature, congruence, soul and actions. Beauty can found in the heart and the mind. Beauty is taken in by the senses, and determined by the pleasure one derives from its very existence, meaning beauty can really be found in everything. But if beauty was truly subjective and not objective then the word beauty itself would hold no meaning. Perhaps the concept of beauty is a combination of the two? With that I’ll leave you with this quote from George Santayana who wrote The Sense of Beauty written in 1896, and I hope it’s inspired you to question your own thinking on what denotes beauty. “Beauty is pleasure regarded as a quality of a thing. Beauty is a value, that is, it is not a perception of a matter of fact or of a relation; it is an emotion. An object cannot be beautiful if it can give pleasure to nobody.” n

ocated in the heart of City Walk, La Ville Hotel and Suites, is a beautiful 5-star boutique hotel. We stayed at this hotel two years ago and during that time, the City Walk area wasn’t as bustling as it is now. The charming low-rise hotel, part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection hotel, embodies a sociable setting and relaxed vibe. There are countless reasons why we are considering the hotel as one of the most unique places we’ve stayed at, some of them are:

Ambiance Although the hotel is located at a lively neighbourhood, one can’t help but admire how the establishment stands out from the rest of the scene. The 5-star sophistication of La Ville can be seen from the moment we walked into the stunning urban destination. We were captivated by the stylish architecture as well as the friendly staff.

Feature Service Majority of the hotels in Dubai are massive and although that is a good thing, we found out that we prefer boutique hotels like La Ville than most. This is because boutique hotels offer a level of customer service that even grand hotels can’t offer. From checking in to feeling the impeccable service, the experience at La Ville is second to none. The hotel also has one-of-a-kind meeting rooms that provide a sophisticated venue for any events, including the stylish X Lounge which is popular for its quirky style and state-of-the-art facilities.

Food La Ville Hotel and Suites also offers an array of distinct food and beverage concepts, including Chival Global Social, GRAZE Gastro Grill, Grapeskin and LookUp Rooftop Bar. We fueled up for a productive day by indulging in a mouthwatering breakfast at Chival. Chival is social eatery that is focused on healthy and thoughtfully sourced produce with light and airy interiors that include seating in the courtyard. During the evening, we dined in at GRAZE, a gastro-grill that serves a social culinary experience that is focused on prime cuts. The restaurant also offers seafood and vegetarian choices. We sat outside parallel the City Walk and savoured the perfectly prepared meat cuts while admiring the vibrant atmosphere. Grapeskin is a standalone grape bar and kitchen decked with chic industrial furnishings. LookUp Rooftop Bar, on the otherhand, is a rooftop pool featuring the awe-inspiring views of Burj Khalifa. n

Majority of the hotels in Dubai are massive and although that is a good thing, we found out that we prefer boutique hotels like La Ville than most. Accommodation Offering tailored cosmopolitan experiences, La Ville comprises of 77 rooms, 11 suites, and 68 apartments, guest rooms are spacious and celebrate relaxed urban luxury through décor led by sophisticated neutral furnishings, combined with contemporary artistic twists. The contemporary and artistically designed rooms provide an elegant oasis from the hustle bustle of the city. Our room was overlooking the vibrant City Walk which makes for a stunning view. On top of that, our room’s amenities are noteworthy; an Illy coffee machine (which we absolutely love!) was also available.

Ask HV Holistic Health… I am dreading spending the Christmas period with my family because there’s so much food and it’s hard to say no all the time. How do I keep them happy, without sacrificing all my hard work so far?

Charlie Answers… The Festive Season can be a disaster when you’re trying to stick to a health & fitness regime. An abundance of good food and company can finish the end of the year on a negative note. Add into the mix the tension that comes with family gatherings, and the whole event can be a stressful situation, rather than a celebration. Follow the HV Holistic Health, Christmas Survival Guide:

Food • Don’t snack on the chocolate boxes or canapés before your meal arrives. If you do succumb, keep track of how many you consume. • Exercise portion control, and eat more protein and vegetables than potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. • Fill up on water during the day. Being hydrated is especially important when you’re drinking alcohol, and can it will reduce your hangover in the event that you indulge too much! • Count alcohol calories in your daily allowance. • Chose your cooking oils wisely. Olive oil is fine for low temperature cooking, and avoid vegetable oil. • Eat healthy snacks if you think you will have to wait a long time.

• Reduce the financial strain and hassle, by organising a Secret Santa with your friends, family or colleagues. • Remember, board games are just GAMES.

Sleep • Your routine is likely to be disrupted with late nights and days off work but, try and stick to your normal sleeping pattern. • Wake up at a normal time. Spending too much time in bed can make you feel groggy and sleepy. • Drink a full glass of water when you initially wake up, because this will flush out yesterday's toxins, and make you feel more alert.

Movement • Keep active. Exercising before eating is better because your metabolic rate will be increased, and you will use the calories you consume, rather than storing them as fat. • Go for a slow, relaxed walk after eating, to aid digestion. • Encourage group activity with your family. Dig out your old Wii Fit, or take the dog for an energetic walk. n

• If you’re hosting, why not suggest a pot-luck so that people can bring things they’re willing to eat, and you can reduce your workload. • Avoid confrontation with family members. Just relax, and address issues at a later date. • Don’t drink to the point that tempers can get flared - keep control of yourself.

People & Culture A trading port since the Dilmun era, Bahrain is no stranger to diversity. The country’s warm, welcoming spirit can be witnessed across generations and even today, expats, regardless of where they come from, live freely. Despite being a primarily Muslim country, Bahrain offers religious freedom to all. In fact, the locals even join the expats in celebrating their religious festivals – the lively Christmas tree lighting events being hosted at the many hotels in Bahrain are proof. Also, if you visit retail stores such as MegaMart and Lulu Hypermarket around this time you’ll find windows and shopping aisles draped in reds, whites and greens. Now, I’m not just talking of commercial happenings but also of how supportive the government has been towards religious institutions and their activities. Sacred Heart Church (SHC), for instance, has been freely conducting its Christmas Eve mass (prayer service) on the Sacred Heart School grounds in Isa Town for years. Moreover, in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly, the Bahrain Defence Force deploys a pair of policemen at the grounds.

o you know what I most miss about Bahrain? Yes, it’s the food. But there’s something else – it’s cosmopolitan society. Growing up, I studied with people of different religions and nationalities. Even after I started working, I had the opportunity to interact with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

The midnight mass at SHC is an experience you must try at least once; a sprawling cemented ground lit by floodlights, rows and rows of chairs filled with people of all faiths, a stage made over in to a grand alter and a melodious choir serenading the heavens with spirited carols and soulful hymns. Some of my fondest Christmas memories are of going for midnight mass with mum and dad and coming back home to a mug of warm Nescafe and a slice (or more!) of plum cake from Al Dasmah Bakery followed by bowl of spicy Mangalorean pork curry. It’s a typical Yuletide tradition with most Bahrain-based Mangalorean (Mangalore is a city in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka) families. We buy the pork from Al Jazira supermarket a day before and cook before we head for mass. It’s these small things that uplift our spirits despite being away from our families back in India. That pork is freely available in selected stores on the island despite local religious beliefs is yet another fine example of the freedom we enjoy here. Perhaps, that’s why most expats call

Despite being a primarily Muslim country, Bahrain offers religious freedom to all. the island a home away from home. Bahrain topped in a global survey, the results for which were released earlier this year, as the best place for expats for the second year in a row. True that there have been some challenges especially in the last couple of years. But is there any doubt that Bahrain is the most ideal example of ‘home is not a place but a feeling’? A Retrospect on being a startup in 2018 Having opened a year ago; in retrospect “Conscious single parenting” is a cake walk by comparison. So, I gift you with the following MUST DO’s in 7 steps: for setting up a healthy start up in 2019. 1. REPEAT: I’m Enough (Daily 100 times) It is your birthright to THRIVE and BE HAPPY. The SURVIVAL treadmill is so last year. 2. WRITE A NEW STORY: There are a million excuses you can come up with as to why things won’t work. STOP! DELETEDESTORY and UNBLOCK. Progress is Growth. 3. NOT A DEAL BREAKER: Lack of start-up capital and diplomas. A major DEAL BREAKER: Self Belief. Some business’s need very little to start up. It depends on the nature of the business and strategy with cost estimate. 4. SHARING GOALS: Have conversations ONLY with key people who will “prepare” you before opening your CR. Even if they love you their own insecurities can get triggered and here come the negative energy rays towards you and your goals. DUCK! 5. ver the years, the advantage of complementary and alternative medicine has been subject to some debate in Bahrain. However, thanks to the National Health Regulatory Authority, this stream of healthcare has been recently endorsed and promoted.

Feature Scheduled rides Yes, it’s a good idea to set your alarm extra early so you have time to request Careem rise in the morning, in theory. But in practice, it’s also a good idea to get that extra ten minutes of sleep. Scheduling a ride means that you don’t have to stress out about organizing your ride first thing because you can book it up to 30 days ahead of time. Simply go to the app and look for the icon of a car and a clock. Click on it to set your preferred pick-up time and location, as well as your destination and the type of ride you want. You can still edit or cancel it any time before your ride. n www.careem.com

Peer-to-peer credit transfer The idea is to provide our customers with the ability to easily and instantaneously transfer Careem credit through their wallets to friends and family. For example, it will allow a parent to send credit to their child to take a Careem ride back home, or for companies to transfer credit to their out-of-office sales force to simplify their claims and reimbursement process. It can also come in handy when you’re out of cash and have no balance in your wallet but need to ride with us urgently. Or it could be as basic as saying “thank you” with a little token of appreciation. And as we add more features to our wallet, the potential uses will grow.

When you get your Careem app, you can make sure your friends and family always know where you are with the Share Your Trip function.

A Decade of Milestones Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Mr. Duaij Al Rumaihi, Mall Manager of City Centre Bahrain.

H

ow is City Centre Bahrain celebrating its 10th Anniversary?

For the celebration of our 10th anniversary, we’ve lined up a number of thrilling activities and promotions. This includes an exciting ‘Shop & Win’ campaign giving the shoppers an opportunity to win numerous instant prizes as well as a luxurious SUV for the grand draw. Several roaming shows and engaging activations will also be available for people to enjoy. This year, we’ve chosen the theme ‘Polar Express’ for our anniversary promotions which will run until January 2019.

How has City Centre Bahrain contributed to the shopping experience in the country? We’re very proud to be a part of something that changed the landscape of shopping in Bahrain. Ten years ago, City Centre Bahrain was inaugurated as the largest fullyengaged shopping, leisure and entertainment centre in the Kingdom. Aside from being adjoined by two premium hotels (Westin Hotel City Centre Bahrain and Le Meridien Hotel City Centre Bahrain), City Centre Bahrain has Middle East’s first and largest indoor-outdoor waterpark, Wahoo! It also offers an international mix of more than 340 exclusive

Feature brands including 60 dining outlets, with major stores such as the Kingdom’s largest Carrefour hypermarket as well as the largest Cineplex, VOX Cineco Cinema. In short, City Centre Bahrain is a one-stop-shop for everything; a revolution in terms of shopping centre retail development in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Since its opening, City Centre Bahrain has managed to attract over 14 million visitors per year on average, making it the highest visited place in the Kingdom after the airport and the King Fahad Causeway. It has become a landmark and THE place to shop, dine and be entertained not just for Bahrainis and residents but also tourists. City Centre Bahrain’s on-going enhancements underscore its commitment to continuously provide visitors with the best shopping experience in the Kingdom.

What are City Centre Bahrain’s proudest achievements? Some of our proudest achievements would have to be being awarded multiple prestigious awards such as: 2018 Health Promoter Mall Award – the healthy mall programme created by the ministry of health is a benchmark for industry excellence. Being awarded this prestigious award

Aside from receiving numerous international awards, we’ve managed to continually improve on our offerings to our customers. We also take pride for having introduced international entertainment shows for the first time to Bahrain. In spite of our achievements, we continue to challenge ourselves and listen to our clienteles’ needs. I believe this is what sets us apart from all the other malls in Bahrain. I personally get a great sense of satisfaction doing my job.

Any specific reason for choosing the “Polar Express” as City Centre Bahrain’s 10th Anniversary theme? The Polar Express train journey mirrors the voyage that City

Feature Centre Bahrain has experienced for the last ten years. At the same time, it ties perfectly with the winter festive décor for this time of the year. Over the past ten years, we have strived to always deliver great moments and create great memories for families to enjoy and that is precisely what the train concept will deliver; it will take our customers on a journey to celebrate great moments and take-home great memories. It is a good synergy to have a theme that celebrates the wonderful trip we’ve had with our consumers because without them, we couldn’t have been this successful.

What are the challenges the mall has faced in the past 10 years? We like to see challenges as opportunities for City Centre Bahrain to exceed customer expectations. We are here to face these challenges in the best possible way while continuously looking for unique ways to enact our founders’ visions – to create ‘great moments for everyone, every day’. Yes, the competition is tough; it is not a walk through the park but at the end of the day, maintaining our top position is our priority. With newer shopping malls popping up every now and then, a part of our commitment is to keep renewing not just the look and feel of the shopping centre but also the offers and promotions. We ensure that that we have the correct formula of retail mix, customer experience, design and sustainability, and entertainment to create great moments for these groups.

The said can be witnessed with our recent integration of technology into our business. Online shopping is another aspect that could be perceived as a challenge however we believe it enhances the shopping experience for retailers with an omnichannel strategy. For example, we launched the Hands-Free Shopping service, providing our shoppers with a truly unique shopping experience which provides the ultimate convenience for shoppers. This service transforms a typical shopping journey into a VIP experience.

We like to see challenges as opportunities for City Centre Bahrain to exceed customer expectations.

What plans do you have for the future? We are always improving our retail mix to ensure we house brands and outlets which follows our visitors changing needs and demands. We will continue transforming everyday experiences for our visitors by providing the best of shopping and entertainment options which offers a complete experience, from retail, dining, leisure to hospitality for many years to come. We will continue to be innovators by introducing new and digitally enhanced experiences for our visitors. n

Bahrain Confidential talks to the General Manager of K Hotel, Mr. Hussain Al Samahiji, on what changes to expect and how to stay at the top.

Quality over Standard

W

hat is your vision for K Hotel? How do you plan to achieve it?

K Hotel is not new to me, I’m familiar with it and how the industry goes. I started my career with the Gulf Hotel group and have, more or less, spent most of my career working within it. K Hotel is a great property with local management; it is a local chain but is is one of the strongest in the area. We have quite a large inventory, on our rooms and service, compared to the competitors around us. Some projects taking place in the hotel right now is the Arabic nightclub, the refurbishment of K lounge, and the bar extension. We are still looking for a name for the Arabic nightclub which will be on the second floor. It’s planned to be very luxurious and will be the best of its kind in Bahrain.

80 Bahrain Confidential December 2018

Feature Times have changed and people think differently on how they travel. What are you doing to meet the needs of today’s travelers in K Hotel? I must say K Hotel is providing most of the needs internally. We are trying our best to provide what our customers need. We have a coffee shop, a relaxing lounge, a live Filipino band for entertainment, and great facilities. We are the only hotel in the area with 5 ISO certificates, it’s proudly displayed in the lobby. Our aim is to provide all the guests’ needs within the hotel itself. A place to relax, drink, and enjoy live music at the lounge. You can have a good time in the hotel itself.

There’s a lot of new and upcoming hotels in the market, yet it seems there’s no increase in the demand in Bahrain. What’s your view on that? To be honest, we are being affected by the inventory increase

here to say we are going to have a room with a flat screen and Wi-Fi because everyone is having that. It is already the standard. We are providing service; we are providing quality. Guests are going to get what they expect and more.” The way they manage the hotel is different. Some of them just do it to make money, leaving the hospitality service at a minimum. We maintain our standard extremely high and from there, still look forward to improving.

Since the recent opening of Wyndham, has it affected K Hotel? How do you see the competition? We have not really been affected business-wise. We have a prime location compared to theirs. The style of management and income generation is also different. Yes, we are competing with each other but we still maintain our business occupancy and we still maintain our budget. We are also recognized as one of the top 4 in rooms in the whole country, we plan to keep that standing.

How does the Gulf Hotel group manage all the competition despite being local? We are local but are also very recognized in the world map as a hotel group. In the international stage, there is a circle that deals with world hotel groups and we are

We maintain our standard extremely high and from there, still look forward to improving. of the hospitality service in Bahrain. However, we stand in the quality of service we provide. All the new ones popping up don’t always meet the standard of the usual guests. K Hotel has been open years before these new ones did, and yet the quality of service we provide and the state we maintain our rooms in are incomparable.

part of that. Other world renowned hotels are also linked to us and us to them, helping us be more recognized internationally.

What do you like most in your job? What I like most in hospitality itself is that you get to meet everybody easily. I wouldn’t be able to meet the prime minister, or the queen perhaps, in a different line of work. In the field of hospitality, there is no limit to who I’ll meet and to who I’ll be able to give service to. The PR, the social circles, to become known by these people and offer a service to them is a luxury. Especially at this quality of hospitality, it is easy to meet people you look up to and it is easy to offer them quality service; because everyone needs hospitality at one point, be it for themselves or their family and friends. n

Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Gabrielle Angeli Sol-Đukic, Assistant Marketing Manager of Al Areen Palace & Spa.

Taking the Lead

T

ell us about your career. How did you break into the hospitality industry and how did you advance to where you are today?

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing Management, I worked as a Marketing intern for the head office of Starbucks Philippines. I’ve always thought that I was destined to work in multinational companies and the idea of working in hotels never entered my mind. A few months later I decided to find my luck in the Middle East - where I actually spent most of my childhood - and leave my home country. I was fortunate to have been given an opportunity to work in Oryx Rotana, an airport business hotel in Qatar as Marketing Coordinator then promoted to Executive after a year. Three years later, another opportunity came and I had to leave for another GCC state, Bahrain. From a business hotel to a resort, I had taken on a new challenge to work as Assistant Marketing Manager for a very unique property. And here I am now… J

What do you enjoy most about your current position at Al Areen Palace & Spa? Being able to capture different happenings and exciting events in the resort through social media, creating stories from different personalities that I meet and deal with, and building a good relationship with vendors, media and bloggers.

What are some of your personal and professional goals in the near future? The world is changing, and technology is taking the lead. Today, everything is going digital so it is important for me as a marketer to stay up-to-date. I will continue to get certifications on digital marketing and work on becoming a Certified Digital Marketing Professional soon. At Al Areen Palace & Spa, our aim is to increase and maintain our brand awareness and market share, to continue building up our online presence, and to launch more events and initiatives that will help drive growth for the property.

If there’s one advice that you would give to the youth, what would it be? Don't limit yourself or let things limit you. Have faith in yourself and believe that you can succeed in whatever you put your mind to. Don't let limitations be your defining points that put an end to what you want. Take advantage of all the resources and opportunities around you. Dream, plan, execute!

It’s been a pleasure having you with us, would you care to share your favourite quote that inspires you? “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist. n

On Mental Health Awareness… Mental health illness is something that affects everyone equally, it does not ask if you are rich or poor, male of female. The treatment of these illnesses however, may just ask these very questions. For women it may be easier to talk about and seek help for, our mental health. But just as any physical ailment, men too experience mental breakdowns. It is time to let men know that it is acceptable, even encouraged to seek out a friend or professional assistance in instances where they may feel overwhelmed. Support groups for women are more readily accessible whereas for men it may be less easy to find. (I have not come across any in Bahrain?) As a result, we may often see men turn towards dependencies such as drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism, and depression may even manifest itself as physical ailments. In Middle eastern regions, where men are still very much veered as the leaders, stigma and ignorance play a bigger role than the actual treatment not being available. Strong familial ties in the middle east may make it easier for men to confide in peers and a religious upbringing may enforce a sense of it being forbidden to inflict harm upon oneself. In stark contrast this can pose a problem as religious leaders are often firstly consulted to ward off any “evil” in the persons life, and scientific methods may be called upon too late. In the middle east we have large groups of people that have been subjected to wars and PTSD and their issues may be more than just a GP can handle, it can be overlooked and make the person feel that their feelings aren’t being validated, worsening the sense of lack of control over your own life and emotions. Populations of expat workers are affected and mental health care is certainly not on top of the list of priorities available to them. These men and women leave their lives behind in search of better opportunities for their families, which sometimes solely depend on their incomes, creating an immense amount of pressure upon them. In a recent increase of suicides here in Bahrain it is evident that our current medical system is unable to deal with these pressures. These individuals often see suicide as the only alternative and these feelings of helplessness are compounded by poor living conditions, salaries being withheld or intimidation from co workers where boarding is shared and money is owed. Just as mental health does not discriminate, we should aim to uplift and let everyone in our lives know that their health matters, regardless of social status or gender. n
