Valentine’s Day Guide

“Sometimes the greatest love is not found in the dramatic scenes that poets and writers immortalize. Often, the greatest manifestations of love are the simple acts of kindness and caring we extend to those we meet along the path of life.”

Valentine’s Day Guide

Be my (own) Valentine

Create a playlist called I’m a Rockstar Once you create this playlist you’re going to fill it up with songs that’s going to help you power through the day and make you feel like a total diva. Some songs you could add on are: 1. "Let Me Blow Your Mind" Eve ft. Gwen Stefani 2. "Flawless" - Beyoncé 3. "Lady Marmalade" - Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Maya, Pink 4. Valentine’s Day Guide

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” Oscar Wilde

Treat Yourself Put aside this day for pampering – you deserve it! Occasionally spending on a blow out for your hair or a new hairstyle, or just a mani-pedi at the spa can be life changing. If that’s out of the question, then why not pamper yourself right at home? DIY Facial Masks

Embrace Comfort Let go of your heels, skirts and jeans and wear sweatpants or a loose shirt and know what deep comfort and what “ I don’t care” feels like. Speaking of comfort, nothing will soothe you like comfort food that’s easy to make and feel really good inside your belly – a cheat day with your favourite food won’t do any harm! Also, you can get bath bombs and soak yourself in the tub playing soothing music. Start reading a new book on self-love and mindfulness. Some good reads are: • Beautiful You – A Daily guide to radical self-acceptance by Rosie Molinary • The gifts of imperfection by Brene Brown • Milk & Honey – Rupi Kaur • How to be a Bawse – Lilly Singh • Eat, Pray, Love – Elizabeth Gilbert.

Oats & Honey Mask (To soothe sensitive skin) • ½ Cup organic whole milk yogurt • 1/3 cup organic oat flour • 2 tsp. organic honey Avocado treatment (To moisturize dry skin) • ½ ripe avocado • 1 tsp. plain yogurt • 1 tsp. honey Tropical Banana Mask (To brighten dull skin) • ½ Banana, mashed • 1 Tbsp. orange juice • 1 Tbsp. Honey DIY Foot Soak • 2 cups of mouthwash • 2 cups of white vinegar • 2 cups of warm water DIY Hair mask • 1 Tbsp. olive oil • ¼ cup whole fat yogurt

Valentine’s Day Guide

Share the Love Dine under the stars Tired of the standard dinner and movie date night? Looking for something romantic that won’t cost an arm and a leg? Have a picnic with a twist – find a secluded spot in a park, beach or even on your rooftop. Spread a blanket and laze around together for the evening with yummy deli treats. Take a book, magazine and even some tunes. Gazing at the stars together is one of those truly romantic date ideas for Valentine’s day.

Cook something special If you’d like to forego the usual three-course meal this Valentine’s day, but feel afraid to stray too far off course, then why not prepare something heartwarming and tummyfilling foe your loved one? Light the scented candles, stick the Barry White album on the stereo and treat your sweetheart to a decadent meal for two. Kick it up a notch by setting the table with candles and flowers, too! • Slow-cooker red wine beef stew Because red wine makes everything better – including stew! This savoury, protein-packed dish is perfect for a romantic meal at home, especially on a chilly evening. Simple and quick to throw together, the stew can cook all day so it’s ready when you and your sweetheart are. • Butternut squash ravioli with seared chicken Take your pre-diced butternut squash with roasted chicken breast, asparagus and cheese for an easy yet elegant meal.

Swing it Dance classes are a great way for couples to bond together – there’s tons of fun when you two get your bodies moving. Revamp your romance and break out of your routine with this exciting idea. Learn traditional waltz or a little more sultry dance like tango and bond over the fact you’re learning something new together.

i Romee! Valentine’s is just around the corner; how do you plan to spend it?

I’ll have breakfast somewhere cozy with my boyfriend after we do our workout together. Later that day, we’ll have a nice little dinner and maybe see a movie afterwards.

What is your idea of a perfect date? What would make it extra special? I just love having good conversations with people I love. Combine that with good food and there’s nothing more I could wish for!

What are the qualities you look for in a person? How do you know if he/she is a BFF material? I look for someone who’s serious and knows what they want out of life. A good hearted, loving person who I can laugh with.

How do you spoil yourself? What lingerie do you plan to treat yourself to? I love to spoil myself with a good massage

Romee Strijd

Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Victoria’s Secret Angel, Romee Strijd.

The energy of a person that is content with his/ herself is beautiful and attractive.

at a spa. I’m also planning on treating myself to some Victoria’s Secret lingerie from the new Dream Angels collection— the lace is really pretty and delicate for Valentine’s Day.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given? Live a well-balanced lifestyle. Try to eat as healthy as possible (doesn’t mean you can never have a burger or chocolate now and then), try to fit in some time for working out, drink lots of water, enjoy a good night sleep (try to aim for 7-8 hours minimum)

and most importantly, do whatever makes you happy. The energy of a person that is content with his/herself is beautiful and attractive.

What beauty items can you not live without? I can’t live without my Victoria’s Secret Lip Matte in “Adored.” I’m obsessed with lip gloss & lipsticks.

What is your favorite piece from the new VS Dream Angels collection? I love the Chantilly Lace High-neck Teddy because you can wear it as both a top and as underwear and really make it a part of your outfit.

You’ve been to Dubai recently, how did you find the experience? Any plans on visiting Bahrain? I had an amazing time in Dubai. It’s a beautiful destination with so many fun things to do. The weather is great, the people are nice, the food is good. I loved it! I do not have any plans for visiting Bahrain soon, but I would definitely be open to going.n

#ForgetFilters Max Fashion’s campaign celebrates living for the moment

M

ax, the largest and most trusted value fashion brand in the region, starts 2018 with a new brand campaign that goes beyond fashion. #ForgetFilters is about living for the moment in a world where people are often missing out on life while being too busy taking the perfect selfies. Produced in collaboration with the Arab youth singing sensation, Mohamed Assaf, the campaign aims to inspire millions to be completely present in their own lives and realities and to not let important moments pass them by. In a world where fashion is carefully edited and filtered to give unrealistic representations of reality, Max takes a humorous approach in reminding its customers what is more important. “Live for the moment, not for the likes!” is the honest piece of advice the famous Arab icon gives to his fans. “Life is filled with unplanned, spontaneous moments

30 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

that can bring smiles to our faces – moments that are best enjoyed without being worried about how you look. Life might not always catch us in the perfect pose or in the right light, but every moment is worth living to the fullest. Real people don’t live for likes; they share moments that matter and real laughs. “Mohammed Assaf added: “The #ForgetFilters campaign from Max is a movement that will inspire many to transform the way they enjoy life. I am delighted and privileged to be part of this journey that focuses on celebrating the present moment.”

The campaign, which is centred around the hashtag #ForgetFilters and accompanied by humorous videos and images featuring Mohammed Assaf, came to life at the end of 2017 across broadcast, digital, and social media. #ForgetFilters follows another successful campaign by Max, ’Fashion for Real People’ which inspired millions to embrace their innate sense of style and to accept their distinctive personality over the last 2 years. n

Tenant Focus and Pro-Active Management: The Essence of The Flagship Meet Mr. Prakash Madhavan, the Property Manager of The Flagship…

H

ow long have you lived and worked in Bahrain?

I moved to Bahrain in November 1990, which means I have lived in Bahrain for over 27 years now. Reflecting on this and seeing my children grow-up here in Bahrain emphasises how quickly the years have flown by!

What brought you to Bahrain in the first place? Before moving to Bahrain, I was working as a hotel operations manager in India. In the late 80s and early 90s, Bahrain’s hotel industry presented some exciting work opportunities. This was why I decided to move here. Bahrain turned out to be a very nice place to live and here I am 27 years later!

How long have you worked in property management? Including my experience in India and

32 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

hotels, I have been working in property management of one type or another for over 30 years – actually this makes me feel very old!

Noting your extensive experience, what do you consider the key factors to successful property management in Bahrain? For residential buildings in Bahrain, tenants generally want a nice place to live and to feel like they are receiving value for money. With this in mind, I think the key things to offer are an appropriately priced product in order to attract tenants and next, to maintain occupancy levels, to ensure proactive management with a constant tenant focus. Here at The Flagship, we have worked very hard to ensure our pricing is appropriate and that we offer excellent management services for the benefit of our tenants. All the time, I want to do everything I can to ensure our tenants are

happy and enjoy living here. In my view, this starts with a polite greeting and a warm smile from all members of staff.

In your opinion, what makes The Flagship a stand-out property in Amwaj? First of all, The Flagship offers an outstanding luxury product that is fairly priced with an excellent and dedicated onsite management team of 8 (I would say that of course!). Also, the building really is perfectly situated right next to the fivestar ART Rotana Hotel and within walking distance of the various restaurants, cafes and supermarkets etc. at The Lagoon in Amwaj – the location really could not be better. Tenants also benefit from outstanding sea views and being close to the airport. Our beautiful reception area, facilities (gym, kids’ play and temperature controlled pool) and, in particular, internet speed are what our tenants compliment the most. n

Come home to an outstanding living experience at The Flagship.

• Experienced & committed on-site management • 24 hour front desk/ reception • 24 hour on-site maintenance • Family friendly • Outstanding gym • Multiple tenant benefits

Bahrain Confidential interviews Dragon City Bahrain’s General Manager, Mr. Patrick Shuo.

I

n a fiercely competitive market of malls and establishments in Bahrain, how do you plan on remaining at the top of the game?

Strong competition is one of the several variables that have been taken it into account regarding Dragon City’s future outlooks. We plan to maintain our impetus by further standardizing and enhancing the variety of products in the mall. We are also set to improve Dragon City’s infrastructures and facilities, The Dining Village will be in full capacity in the near future, which is expected to increase the customer flow.

What makes Dragon City stand out? Dragon City is a place where past meets present, which is reflected in its design, inspired by authentic Chinese heritage. The mall covers an area of 54,000 m2 and houses over 787 retail and wholesale commercial units, making it the largest in the Kingdom of Bahrain. We receive over 19,000 customers a day, which doubles during weekends and public holidays.

34 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

Mr. Patrick Shuo

Moreover, Dragon City greatly contributes to the advancement of Bahrain’s economy, attracting large Chinese investments and companies, both industrial and commercial, that wish to establish regional centres in Bahrain. Thus, Dragon City has become a direct trade gateway for the export of various Chinese goods from Bahrain to countries of the region. We also magnetize a large number of tourists and businessmen.

What is the present level of tenancy/occupancy at the mart? To date, Dragon City has achieved an occupancy rate of 98% for commercial units in the mall, which offer a wide array of goods to shoppers. Local companies constitute 10% of the occupancy, while the rest come from China.

What are Dragon City Bahrain’s achievements? Some of the most notable feats achieved by Dragon City include the milestone of 10 million visitors in less than 2 years. 7 million of these visitors were received in 2017 alone, turning Dragon City into a leading family destination for Bahrainis as

well as families from GCC countries. Not to mention a staggering 2.5 billion dollars import worth.

What types of experiences do you offer to shoppers in order to ensure a great time for them and also that they return to Dragon City? Dragon City invests a great deal in providing a comprehensive shopping and entertainment experience to its visitors. There is a variety of cafés as well as a food court serving delectable dishes. The mall also has a number of fun shops for children, where they can enjoy games while their parents shop. Further exemplifying commitment to visitors’ pleasure is Dragon City’s keenness to organise and host a mixture of unique family events on a periodical basis. In fact, Dragon City’s annual Chinese New Year celebration is upcoming on the 15th of February. Preparation are underway to create a spectacular event full of cheer and great surprises this year. Families and individuals of all ages are invited to join the festivities of this culturally significant event. n

‘Everyone is a Winner’ as shoppers spin the Wheel of Fortune and win exciting rewards. In keeping with the festive spirit of giving, Dragon City is gifting flight tickets to Beijing, fine dining vouchers and more, as friendly mascots hand out spot prizes to kids. Every BD 20 spent shopping gets you a chance to ‘spin and win’ a guaranteed prize. All participants then advance to the Raffle Draw with a luxury car as the Grand Prize.

Car Review

Bahrain Confidential went down to Dubai to test drive a few of the new Audis, and we particularly liked the new S5 and Audi TT RS.

Audi S5 and Audi TT

A

udi has revitalised its A5 and S5 Coupes, and the results are thus. They are faster, more efficient and lighter than before. We drove various models of Audi but the S5 and TT really impressed us. We took the Audi S5 and TT to a desert road – out and beyond, where there were

no speed cameras and few cars, so that we could really put the two cars through their paces. Taking off against each other along a straight road, the Audi TT noticeably had more acceleration than the S5, understandable bearing in mind the types of cars each one is.

turbocharged V-6 hurls you back into your seat, it’s good to feel the support and have something to hold onto. The engine brims with 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, up 21 hp and 44 lb-ft. Not only is the engine 31 pounds leaner than the old supercharged V-6.

S5

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive makes a major contribution to the sporty handling. In normal driving, it distributes slightly more power to the rear wheels but, if necessary, the majority of the power can be directed to the axle with better traction. Wheel-selective torque control optimizes handling and stability in fast cornering with minimal brake interventions. The optional sport differential actively distributes torque between the rear wheels.

Swift, nimble, and subtly handsome: that summarizes the S5. It combines emotive design with the performance of a sports car. The bumper, air inlets and side sills of the S5 feature distinctive contours. The side air inlets have bold edges and honeycomb grilles as well as vertical bars evoking the blades of a racing car. At the front end, the S5 expresses its independence with additional sporty details, such as the S-specific radiator grille with double slats. Sportier than the regular A5, but not outlandishly so, and the same goes for the engine. When the new 3.0-liter

There’s a fresh look, but its subtlety speaks to the prosperousness of S5’s predecessor. Audi offers the S5 in three body styles: Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet.

Car Review offers four driving modes: Comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual. The lightning-fast seven-speed S tronic - standard - and the permanent Quattro all-wheel drive delivers agile handling and superior stability. The TT RS Coupé design is further refined with distinctive features, such as Audi's single-frame grille with honeycomb and the quattro logo. The striking RS bumper with aggressive air intakes convey a

TT RS Audi includes all the modern performance upgrades in its arsenal to make the TT RS one wicked sports coupe. The new fivecylinder turbo engine in the TT RS is 57 pounds lighter than the old engine. It kicks out 400 horsepower from 5,850 to 7,000 rpm and 354 lb-ft of torque from 1,700 to 5,850 rpm. It feels quick – Audi quotes 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Audi drive select allows setting up Quattro drive, steering, S tronic, engine characteristics, and exhaust valves at will - from long-distance cruising to fastlap circuit driving. powerful and athletic impression. The rear is aesthetically dominated by the fixed wing, sitting on two slender double spokes. A highly profiled diffuser insert with four vertical fins complete the car's dynamic appearance. The TT RS models offer nine body colours, including the RS-specific tones Nardo grey uni and Catalunya red metallic. Audi TT RS Coupé price starting from BD30,030.

The Verdict The Audi TT is much sportier while the S5 is more of a fine-handling family car. This is no criticism of the S5; it has loads of power but the Audi TT has more. Both of the cars were beautiful to drive. Which one do we prefer? It depends on your needs. n

Car Review

The All-New BMW X3 A look that boosts the desire for new challenges, and maximum driving pleasure on any road.

T

he BMW X3 was the car that launched the mid-size SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) segment in 2003. Since then, BMW has recorded more than 1.5 million new registrations of the X3 across the two model generations so far. And now the new BMW X3 is set to write the next chapter in this success story with an even more striking, dynamic design language, powerful yet also efficient drive systems and luxurious appointments. Like all members of the successful X family, it blends standout driving qualities on any terrain with unrestricted everyday usability. Customers can choose from three model lines – xLine, Luxury Line and M Sport – and the BMW Individual range of products to align the inside and outside of the new BMW X3 even more precisely with their personal tastes.

Sharper design and three model variants. The third generation of the BMW X3

40 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

follows in its predecessors’ tyre tracks by combining rugged off-road looks with a sporting presence. Its familiar proportions, including very short front and rear overhangs, shine the spotlight on the perfect 50:50 distribution of weight between the front and rear axle. The potent dynamic intent of the new

BMW X3 is highlighted by a chunky kidney grille and foglamps featuring a hexagonal design for the first time on a BMW X model. At the rear, the light clusters, markedly downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes bring matters to asuitably muscular conclusion. In addition to the standard 18-inch light-alloy wheels, customers can dip into the options list

Car Review for wheel/tyre combinations in sizes up to 21-inch. The interior of the new BMW X3 also displays unbeatable fit and finish and material quality, and is even classier and more luxurious than its predecessor. Comfort levels are further elevated by a host of new equipment options like three-zone automatic climate control, the Ambient Air package, active seat ventilation, the cargo function of the standard split/folding rear seat backrests and the panoramic glass roof that brings extra airiness to the interior and further enhances perceived quality. Another new equipment item is the optional BMW Display Key, which not only locks and unlocks the BMW X3 by radio remote control, but also shows a variety of status information on the car. Owners can operate functions including the optional auxiliary heating using the optional BMW Display Key.

Optimized combination of dynamic sharpness and ride comfort. The BMW engineers have employed far-reaching chassis modifications to significantly improve the driving dynamics, directional stability and steering feel of the new BMW X3. The car that emerges is even sportier than its predecessor, yet

avoids compromising on ride comfort. Chassis options include M Sport suspension, Dynamic Damper Control, M Sport brakes and variable sport steering.

More efficient line-up of engines and intelligent lightweight design. From the launch of the new model (or shortly afterwards), the engine line-up will feature three petrol and two diesel engine variants with outputs from 135 kW/184 hp to 265 kW/360 hp (fuel consumption combined: 8.4 – 5.0 l/100 km [33.6 – 56.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 193 – 132 g/km)*. All models come with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.

BMW ConnectedDrive: semi-automated driving and cutting-edge connectivity. When it comes to the BMW Personal CoPilot features focusing on driver assistance and (semi) automated driving, the new BMW X3 can be specified as an option with the latest generation of Active Cruise Control and the Driving Assistant Plus safety package, including Steering and lane control assistant, Lane Change Assistant and Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection. This extensive line-up of assistance systems puts clear

water between the new BMW X3 and its direct rivals. The second pillar of BMW ConnectedDrive – alongside the BMW Personal CoPilot driver assistance systems – is formed by BMW ConnectedDrive Services and apps. As a result, the new BMW X3 now also features BMW Connected. Working on the basis of a flexible platform, the Open Mobility Cloud, this new integrated digital concept for enhanced personal mobility uses various touchpoints (such as smartphones and smartwatches) to integrate the car seamlessly into the user’s digital life. This means, for example, that it can transfer mobility-related information, such as addresses from calendar entries, from a smartphone into the car, enter them automatically as destinations into the navigation system and calculate the optimum departure time for the journey. Gesture control allows various navigation and infotainment system functions to be operated intuitively using finger and hand gestures. Meanwhile, the likewise optional Voice Assistant lets the driver use everyday language to have their requests turned into the appropriate actions instead of having to use set spoken commands. The full range of latest-generation BMW Connected functions are available, providing seamless connectivity between owners, their cars and the outside world. n

Luxury, in the Scandinavian Sense

Bahrain Confidential went to Milan, Italy to review Volvo’s new XC40 and have a look at the new Volvo Studio Concept.

T

he Volvo Studio in Milan is its second location, after opening the first in Stockholm, Sweden. Inside this luxurious space, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a bite to eat – it’s a really cool place to hang out. Volvo Studio Milan is not only showcasing the new XC40, but it is also highlighting their design products. Volvo continues to impress with gorgeous new SUVS. We had the pleasure of testing the Volvo XC60 in Turkey a few months ago. The Volvo XC60 sits right at the heart of the big-selling mid-size crossover crowd. It’s handsome and luxurious and it wraps you in a safety blanket as comprehensive as the Swedish welfare state. From the front, the XC40 looks slightly feistier than the XC60. From the side is where these two siblings differ the most. Being 7.8 inches shorter than the XC60, the XC40 does without a third row of windows. The rear doors also angle up and give the XC40 wider looking hips. The highly anticipated XC40 will complete the company’s SUV line-up that also

42 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

features the full-size, top-of-the-range XC90 and the mid-size XC60. A muscular stance and tasteful design set the XC40 apart from competitors in the compact SUV segment. A variety of exterior trim options, that include an R-design package, will also be available. Designed with urban living in mind, the XC40 combines a commanding road view with unparalleled ergonomics and a host of safety systems to safely intervene as soon as an imminent collision is detected, or even guide the driver safely back onto the road if the vehicle is drifting off-course. The XC40 also features a Volvo Cars 360°

surround-view camera, to help it fit into even the tightest parking spaces. Offered with a choice of diesel and petrol turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the XC40 can be optioned with a T5 petrol four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain, as well as with 3-cylinder, hybrid and fully electric powertrains later in the production run. Power is delivered to all four wheels via Volvo’s all-wheel drive system, keeping the XC40 sure-footed in all weather conditions. During the test drive, they kept apologising to us because of the weather; it was really rainy and cloudy but to be honest, coming from Bahrain, it was really nice to see some rain. The only complaint, if anything was the on the tolls – the Italian toll system on the ‘autostradas’ (motorways). It was a nightmare for many of us who weren’t familiar on how to use it, causing those behind us to honk their horns. Overall, the cars were perfect a perfect example of Scandinavian luxury and comfort on wheels. n

An Exquisite

Taste

Executive Chef, Valter Piergiovanni and I can see that people here are interested in eating delicious food with quality ingredients.

What do you most love?

W

hat is it that made you decide to become a chef?

I grew up in my parents’ restaurant and I became so passionate watching my mother cook. My grandmother was also a chef in a very well known restaurant in Rome. The Kitchen was a part of my life. At 15 years old, I decided to go to Culinary school to learn the foundation of this job that I grew up falling in love with. This is my calling.

What do you enjoy most about living in Bahrain? I have worked in so many countries around the world and I see Bahrain as a good place to share as well as develop my food knowledge. I love the Bahraini people. I have been on this island for four years

46 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

Cooking is my passion and I put so much effort and energy in this job which I actually do not consider a job. I am thankful to the support my family provides me since my schedule is not easy. Now at Oliveto, along with Chef Paolo I am able to combine our passions for the exquisite taste of simply delicious Italian food.

Any dislikes? Well, sometime I have to renounce social life and family time because of my work. Nothing comes without sacrifices.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in life? To always be humble and listen to advice from the right people.

What is your proudest moment in your career? Years ago I cooked together with chefs Joel Robuchon and Alain Ducasse in Paris for the World Table. It was a wonderful and unbelievable experience as well as the proudest moment of my life.

Any favorite saying/motto? Listen and learn. n

Health & Wellness

Ask HV Holistic Health…

I gained weight over the festive period, and I’m just wondering if I have left it too late to lose the weight I gained before Summer arrives?

Charlie Answers:

and you’ll burn through your calories quicker. Your BMR will increase, too, meaning you can eventually eat more without gaining weight – bonus!

The good news is that it’s definitely not too late to make significant changes to your body before you’re required to be bikini ready. Here’s how:

LIFESTYLE

• Stay sober: Not only is alcohol a drain on your calorie count, its consumption actually inhibits your body’s ability to burn fat. In real terms, this means you could be undoing all your hard work with even relatively small quantities of alcohol.

NUTRITION

• Count your calories: Calorie counting has received bad press in recent years but, calories are simply units of energy. Knowing how many units you need for weight loss, will help you hit your target quicker. Work out your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and do not eat less than that number of calories, or your body will store fat rather than losing it. • Go gluten free: Gluten, for most people, initiates an inflammatory response in the body, (whether you’re aware of the symptoms or not). You can’t avoid ‘most’ gluten – It’s all or nothing. Even small traces of gluten remain in your body long after consumption. • Increase your WATER intake: Everyone knows how important adequate hydration is! Drink 0.033 x your bodyweight in kilos, daily. • Eat fat: Clean, dietary fat is really good for you, and will prevent your body craving naughty fats found in cakes and sweets.

48 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

• Sleep: Insufficient sleep will increase your stress hormone (cortisol) levels, which in turn promotes fat storage.

Chose coconut oil, avocados and nuts but, remember to include them all in your calorie count.

EXERCISE

• Workout wisely: For optimum weight loss, concentrate on short sessions of high intensity exercise and long sessions at a low intensity. Avoid medium intensity (such as jogging), as this has been proven to be the least effective for speedy weight loss. • Lift weights: Build lean muscle mass

• Love yourself: Believe in yourself, be proud of small changes you make, and know that you’re good enough just the way you are. Having a positive self-belief can make the difference between success and failure. n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Charlie Anderson Head Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544

People & Life the news in office, one of my non-Indian colleagues asked me with tongue in cheek if my parents had selected the boy. Now, I don’t blame this said colleague because it’s a notoriously popular myth that ‘all Indians have arranged marriages’. Another myth surrounding this one is that Indians meet their spouses-to-be on the day of the wedding or, at best, few weeks before D-day. Wrong! While that may have been the case two generations ago, arranged marriages in India have evolved ever since. In fact, they’re quite similar to Western ‘free-choice’ marriages, more commonly known as ‘love marriages’, in that the boy and girl get sufficient time to know and understand their prospective partners; in some cases, like mine, even a whole year. The difference is that the boy and girl are introduced to each other by parents or extended family members instead of, say, friends or destiny.

It’s interesting how the internet’s role in Indian match making has tremendously risen over the last decade or so. A growing number of Indian singles are relying on matrimonial sites, the equivalent of Western dating apps, to find their partners. A survey conducted by one such site to understand the changing mindset amongst young (20 to 35 years) singles and their approach towards marriage highlighted that 59 percent respondents would like to initiate the process but also get family approval before the wedding, 23 percent said "with a partner who I found" and 19 percent were willing to go in for an arranged marriage. The figures clearly indicate that there is no apprehension towards modern arranged marriages given that the boy and girl are more involved in the decision making process. Another statistic was that 75 percent of people who signed up on the site were seeking marriage partners for themselves and not a family member, which goes to show that majority young Indian singles have a more hands-on approach to choosing their life partners.

When I broke the news in office, one of my nonIndian colleagues asked me with tongue in cheek if my parents had selected the boy. In answer to my colleague’s question, my husband and I knew of each other and had met at many a family function for 17 years before we decided to take it to the next level. That’s longer than most marriages last these days! And in the 7 years preceding our marriage, we were very good friends. Did we seek our parents’ approval? Yes, but the choice to get married was solely our own. Would we make different choices given a second chance? Ah well! My husband and I believe that’s a story for another day (wink wink). n

Romantic Dining

F

ebruary is the time when love blooms in time for Valentine’s Day. However, when you are in the company of you loved one, each day is a day to celebrate. Special moments add a charm to the bond that you cherish. Keizo Restaurant at Al Areen Palace & Spa offers one of the finest dining experiences for the couples who treasure precious romantic moments not only on Valentine's Day but also throughout the year. Keizo Restaurant enchants the visitors through a mythical allure with the artistry, luxury, and comfort. Located at the man-made island and surrounded by pristine water, the restaurant extends into gazebos outlining the lake. We had reserved our dinner at the gazebos, but an unexpected sandstorm forced us to stay inside the restaurant. The restaurant staff had called us in the evening to inform the situation and to assist if a reschedule is needed. However, we wanted to stay with our plans.

58 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

special, our table offered the romantic view of the lake and outside gazebos. The welcome drinks were a curtain raiser for the courses that would follow. Sweet, aptly fizzy and with a perfect blend of flavors, our eyebrows raised in 'Wow!' as soon as we had each sip. Our hosts were genuinely happy at our expressions, "This is Passion fruit exotic mojito. You will not find it in the menu and we made it especially for the occasion."

Who doesn’t like special treats, especially on such special nights! The food flowed in on perfect intervals and we savored the four-course menu including Shrimp Tempura served with spicy mayo, Rum Maki deep fried crab sticks, fried rice, Kung Pao Chicken, King

Prawns platter, salmon and the noodles. The star on the table was 'Yellow Cutter Peeler Mango Shrimp.' The sushi with the shrimp wrapped in mango peels tempted us on each bite. "We do not serve ordinary food here, which you can find in other restaurants. This is a destination restaurant, where people drive in from faraway places to experience the unique ambience and the tastefully crafted food." Mr. Janaradan Das, Executive Chef of Al Areen Palace & Spa beamed in happiness as we relished his signature dishes. We signed our bills and the price was precise for the food and the service at Keizo. "If there was something to revive in our love, I would have said that this dinner revived in romance. I am so happy now and this is one of the most beautiful nights for us and we will have many more." My husband said holding my hand across the table. No more explanation needed to agree that, 'the way to a man’s heart is through is stomach.' "Let’s come back here on Valentine's Night. The gazebos will be ready to take us into a dreamland of perfection." I gazed at the gazebos in preparation for the upcoming Valentine's Day. n

Flavour Fusion T ucked away in Swiss-BelHotel International’s 28th floor, B28 Bar Lounge is how you imagine a chic bar lounge would be. Upon arriving, an artful contemporary setting enriched with dark walls, lush chairs and private corners welcomed us. Lights were few and golden and people were having private conversations while enjoying the spectacular view of Bahrain. The Oishii Sushi Night takes place every Wednesday evening from 7pm onwards with a spread of vibrant Japanese specialties. It is priced at BD12 per person and includes a sushi platter and 2 selected drinks. We started with crunchy edamame beans and vegetable tempura; a mouthful of that crisp outer layer mixing with the soft filling was a sensory delight! We slurped on a few cocktails while taking turns on which roll to try - the California Maki was a hit; you can tell there’s a lot of care that goes into the construction of each pretty roll.

64 Bahrain Confidential February 2018

B28 Bar Lounge gives everyone a taste of Japan with their Oishii Sushi Night!

The salmon, tuna and prawn nigiri were also impeccably fresh and the rice was well textured. Each glimmering nigiri was sublime and we can’t remember having anything quite so fresh and tasteful. Just one is never enough and before you know it, we’ve demolished the spread! B28 Bar Lounge has been setting standards for a harmonious fusion of flavours... ‘oishii’ indeed! You can’t buy happiness but you can have sushi, which is kind of like the same thing. On top of the delightful offerings, the service was as impeccable as ever. The friendly staff, especially Bar Manager, Milos helped us settle in with fun conversations. What struck us most were the walls; the exquisite painting of a woman who was so relaxed and looked like she fit in the bar scene better than any of us. The colors used were the same palette seen across the bar, but move a little more further and you’ll be taken aback by this breathtaking view of Bahrain. The chill yet warm atmosphere the lounge provides is

elevated with a live singer whose voice lulls you into a dream-like state. B28 is an ideal place to hold a Margarita in hand and just look beyond and wonder. If the ambience wasn’t enough to help you wind down, or the array of drinks, there’s always the food; a wonderful platter of sushi, that mingles with your taste buds so gently and the sticky rice giving you a sense of comfort – all made with feelings, that’s how the chef so rightly put it. What more could you possibly ask for? n

A Taste of Italy as satisfying as a main. The vibrant and creamy basil pesto sauce was really delightful and was even more mouthwatering with parmesan cheese. The rotini pasta was a perfect al dente, as it was cooked to order like their pizzas. The food serving was great and was very reasonable with the price of BD7 net with carpaccio and tiramisu. Onto the margherita pizza - the tomato sauce was excellent! It was tangy and sweet and you can detect the fresh tomatoes; the pizza had an equal ratio to the cheese as well.

If you are a lover of Italian food, then you better clear your calendars because this February, Patio will be launching a menu featuring authentic Italian cuisine with a modern twist. Upon setting foot in the restaurant, we felt an inviting contemporary atmosphere, heightened by floor-to-ceiling windows that left us admiring the scene. We honestly don’t know how we still managed to have room for dessert but we didn’t miss the classic tiramisu and panna cotta with mixed berries. We got to sample the limited edition Valentine’s cake, 'Romeo an Juliet'. The red glazed, diamond-cut heart shaped pastry looked far too beautiful to eat and it definitely tasted as good as it looks – heavenly layers of chocolate cake, praline and pâte feuilletée with a hint of berries. The special cake is available on pre-order only from 1st to 7th February at the Ritz Gourmet Lounge for BD50. 14 lucky cakes will also be available on Valentine’s Day on a first come, first served basis. The evening kicked off with Cantina Kahlo mixologists shaking up their famous Mexican mocktails. Trying each of the refreshing mixes, a concoction of sweetness and tanginess stood out from the rest – it was the Kahlo mocktail inspired by its namesake, Frida Kahlo. For those who yearn a refreshingly crafted beverage with crisp, complex fruity notes, the mocktails were perfect. From the marina, we headed to Plums restaurant to try the new French Parisian Classic menu. The warm French Onion Soup felt like a warm hug and had an amazing depth of flavour; the Rib Eye with hand cut French fries and Café de Paris butter was a show-stealer. Several entrées stood out from the rest like the Tartar Rossini, a classic chopped to order sour dough bread topped with seared duck liver. Desserts included the classic favourite crème brûlée as well as the

Tarte “Tatin” Chantilly, a warm upside down apple tarte with whipped cream. We sipped on wonderful cherry mocktails because the party simply isn't complete without a delicious drink to toast the night away with! To top it all off, a very sweat reveal

after by the bar staff who introduced us to a new favourite – a Melon Daiquiri – together with a wide selection of other beverages and virgin cocktails. Perfect.

We were welcomed by the friendly staff and the bright and cheerful ambience of the venue, not to mention the most amazing display of food arranged delightfully throughout; wow! The focal point of the brunch certainly lived up to its name with a beautiful selection of fresh seafood centred around the Crab and Oyster Bar.

After a brief wander up to the pool, to refresh the appetite, access to the pool and children’s play room is included, we decided it was time to wrap up the afternoon with a selection from the desert bar and cheese table. The White Chocolate gateau was an immediate attraction, but the choices on offer soon outpaced our abilities! A final selection of cheeses and coffee brought a relaxing afternoon to a close; next time we are determined to go with a bigger appetite and do justice to the amazing work of the kitchen team who are to be highly commended for the diversity and quality of the fare.

e were surprised and delighted to receive an invitation to Downtown Rotana’s Crabs and Oysters Friday Brunch recently. Opening in May 2016 the hotel has gone from strength to strength with a growing following at its many outlets. We have been to Teatro many times, but their Brunch, held within the Flavours on 2 restaurant, had previously escaped us.

Now, eating crabs is generally best tackled in an old t shirt and jeans with a hammer and crackers. It’s a fun way to eat, though refined and relaxing it generally is not! However, at Flavours we selected our favourite, adding Oysters, Lobster and Prawns and passed the challenge to the Chefs who were only too willing to take on the messy part of the preparation,

delivering a wonderful platter to our table within a few minutes – easy! Continuing the theme there were several other Crab inspired dishes; the Crab Fritters were a particular favourite. The food selection obviously did not stop there, with a stunning Sushi Cabinet, Curries, Pork Table and roast meats. Throughout the meal we were serenaded by their wonderful Saxophonist & Vocalist, Kristina while being attentively looked

So, gather your friends and head to Downtown Rotana for a great afternoon; we guarantee that you will not be disappointed with the quality and value for money of this delightful brunch! n For more information and to book, please call +973 1311 9999 or email flavours2. downtown@rotana.com
