ow are you finding Bahrain?
I'm not new in the region so it was quite an easy transition to Bahrain, for me. I found Bahrain more family-oriented and easier to adapt to. I’ve also read an HSBC survey saying that Bahrain is in the top ten list of countries where you can settle in quite fast. With its simplicity, I believe it is one of the best countries to live in.
The number of luxury hotels in Bahrain has doubled in the past four years, where are the guests coming from? Yes, we have more hotels being built and I’ve read that they are building a new convention center next to the BIC. Bahrain has a vision of bringing in more international conferences which in turn, increase the demand for rooms. The number of attractions in the island raise the demand as well.
age, I already knew that I wanted to work in the hotel industry. On the other hand, I dislike the long working hours. I have never celebrated a New Year’s Eve outside of work in over two decades. Nobody wants to be stuck in a repetitive routine. Nevertheless, this is a routine I enjoy. I always find myself going back to the hotel I work in because this is where I feel most comfortable.
Is there a particular saying or motto, that guides you? “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible”, a quote from Walt Disney. This is what I always aim to do. It’s a short life so it’s always fun to create something new. Who knows? Maybe in the near future we’ll have hotels on the moon! n
What is your vision for this property? Our dream is to bring back the glorious Regency days. We have people who’ve been visiting the hotel for more than 30 years. They’ve met here, they’ve married here, and even their children are now getting married here. There’s a lot of history in this property and I’d like to incorporate its heritage, tradition, and luxury in all our future plans.

I’m not here to change people, I’m here to give direction to them. I often say this to my staff: we’re not only here just to serve food, drinks, or provide a room. We’re here to get an emotional connection with our guests, build this lifetime relationship slowly. This property is 38 years old and we want to move forward taking in mind its rich culture and history.
Internationally, the luxury hotel sector has become more crowded and more demanding. How are you catering to the modern traveler? In whatever we do, we perform with flare. Whether it be in serving a simple cup of coffee or creating something grand, we do it quick and fast catering to the modern business needs but with flare.
What would you say you most enjoy about your job? And on the flipside, what do you dislike the most about your job? I love the interaction I get from people; it is something I always look forward to. I grew up in a hotelier family and from a young

People Who Are Making a Difference This column would be dedicated to people in Bahrain who are contributing to this society and putting great efforts into helping others and making Bahrain a better place. Jawaher Fareed Almoayyed, a 24-year-old Bahraini architect who started her home-based business white spoon a year and a half ago straight after graduating from university. Jawaher sells cookies to support girls’ education by donating 50% of profits. Her initial interest was charity as she always wanted to help others but as she put more thought and research into it, she decided that the best way is sustainable charity. She explained that by investing in developing others to better themselves through education, they will be able to sustain this major improvement and be able to provide for themselves in the future. White Spoon helped 10 girls so far to continue their education since May 2017 and succeeded to raise about 5,329 BD in total from cookie sales alone, plus the generous anonymous donations she received to reach the fund target for several cases. Jawaher believes that when you educate a girl, you educate a family. By sending a girl to school, she also is far more likely to ensure that her children receive proper education. Alongside with other reasons highlighting the importance of girls’ education such as decrease in infant mortality, maternal mortality, population expansion, and domestic sexual violence, increase in political and governmental involvement, and improve socioeconomic growth. Jawaher grew her business and now has a shop in Riffa. She continues to support girls live up to their true potential. The financial support is not exclusive to Bahraini girls and not age specific, the choice is made based on the nature of the applicant herself as the priority goes for those who are advocates for change and will help others too. Set amid a lush jungle valley setting, just a stone’s throw from the centre of Ubud, Apéritif is Bali’s newest and most unique fine dining destination. Combining the highest quality ingredients from Viceroy Bali’s greenhouse, the island of Bali and the world; Apéritif presents the best of contemporary global cuisine touching on the archipelago’s diverse culinary heritage and ingredients. When we visited Viceroy Bali, we were just in time for Apéritif’s opening. With its captivating interiors, the restaurant and bar is designed to be an enchanting and unique experience. The grand atmosphere of the 1920’s was conveyed in the restaurant’s opulent decorations in marble, wood and bronze. To add character, the space is also dotted with authentic period photographs that show the last Dutch-Indonesian Viceroys The menu explores the global cuisine through the flavors of the Indonesian archipelago. During our visit, we indulged in the sophisticated eight-course degustation menu. Since one of us was vegan, the chef crafted a special vegan menu which was really impressive given the short notice. Though small in portions, each dish was exceptionally presented. We couldn’t get enough of the Venison Wellington with foie gras, truffle mashed potatoes finished with mushroom rendang sauce. Apéritif’s freshly baked breads were also amazing! Apéritif also has an extensive list of unique drinks as well as cocktails inspired by the Roaring Twenties. It is said that the cocktails were created with Bali’s tropical climate in mind while showcasing the best artisanal spirits and in-house infusions. Our culinary adventure at Apéritif was nothing short of spectacular. It is also worth noting that the staff were very knowledgeable in explaining each masterpiece on top of being attentive and friendly. We can say that the restaurant is one of the best in Bali and anyone staying at the Viceroy MUST visit it. It would be a crime not to! n

uventus Academy Bahrain, an elite level football academy providing training to children aged 3-18, have announced that they will be operating under new ownership in the form of International Sports Group Limited (ISG). The move adds Juventus Academy Bahrain to an already expansive portfolio for ISG, which also includes ownership of the Juventus Academies in Saudi Arabia. Both parties are very happy with the agreement, Academy Director, John Mackenzie, said “We’re very excited about the move and the prospect of working with them [International Sports Group]. They were excellent throughout all negotiations and shared our visions for where we would like to take the academy over the coming years. They have the added bonus of being able to combine ideas and resources with their other Juventus Academies.” Juventus Academy Bahrain is an official academy of Juventus Football Club and is currently in its second year of operating. The academy boasts 5 full time coaches with internationally recognised qualifications as well as training each year, attending the annual

Juventus coaches conference in Turin. The academy is also subject to 3 inspection visits per year from Juventus to ensure that the academy is running at the highest possible level and in line with the Juventus methodology. Each child at the academy attends a minimum of two sessions per week with the option of both play and advanced classes, each age group also has the opportunity to participate in a minimum of two international tournaments over the course of a season where they will play against other official Juventus academies, including a trip to Turin to play in the Juventus World Cup. Now with International Sports Group as their new owners the Academy is hoping to build upon the work it has already done, over the course of the last year Juventus Academy Bahrain have introduced a number of ideas to create a more immersive footballing experience, including partnerships with a physio and strength and conditioning coach, the use of GPS tracking and video for player analysis as well as a classroom for interactive educational work. n

hutan, an ancient land full of mystical creatures and legends. I am sitting on the terrace of my guesthouse looking out on to a captivating sunset beyond the fort valley of Thimpu. I can imagine the dragons breathing fire into the air, protecting the Druk (Dragon) People from its immortal enemies. Bhutan, this is my 66th Country! I lived in 5 different places and spent 2 years backpacking across Asia. I’ve done a few epic road trips, rode motorbikes cross-country, and trekked up some mountains. But it’s not enough. Being on the road, meeting locals, trying new foods, experiencing the diversity in cultures, and watching breath-taking scenery, it all becomes too addictive. It is time, so I packed my bags and here I am, on the road again! As I sat there watching the sun go down, I thought how different Bhutan is to Bahrain! A little island I am proud to call home. I can’t help but wonder how I made it from that Island here, and where it all began. I guess it begins years and years ago, as I sat in front of the TV in my teens watching travellers’ document the four corners of the world. Documentaries of survival and adventure, expeditions to the North Pole, and insane folk basejumping through canyons, and all the adventures we wish we could do. Like most, I sat there in awe wondering why endure so much pain for a little triumph. How do they get up there? Why do they risk their lives? Too many questions I didn’t have the answers to. I shrugged it all off and got on with my life. Years went by. I finished University, worked, went back to University, and worked some more! I still watch travel channels and adventure shows and can’t stop thinking about going away. The idea was getting bigger in my head, but my career was taking off. Sometime later, I decided to go on a 2-week holiday, little did I know I would be travelling for 2 years. That was 6 years ago, but it’s a story for another time… n

id you study art formally? Tell us about your education and training.
I finished a degree in commerce and I am now pursuing my master’s degree in textile design. Though I have no formal education in art, my training in an art and design school has indeed opened new perspectives for me, adding value to my practice.
Art I feel satisfied with my work when I see that I have achieved what I intended to express. It may not necessarily be complete, like I said, it is evolving. The time taken is variable. It usually ranges from an approximate of 6 hours to 55 hours of working with material.

What do you remember as your first work of art? I experienced a strong incline towards art after my bachelor’s. What remained a hobby until then developed into passion. The series of paintings I created as I entered this stage is what I remember as my first work of art. That particular body of work allowed the viewer to connect to its concept. And I feel that is an important part of my work; to be able to trigger thought, establish a relation and create dialogue.
Can you describe your painting process, how do you know when your artwork is finished? How long does it take to finish a piece? My process has been evolving over the years. I have certain inspirations and concepts that I work on and the artwork emerges from my understanding of them. Sometimes, it starts with making and engaging with material, and the artwork develops from that. It is an ongoing process. There are times when I have understood the meaning of my work only after it is made. And there are some pieces, the meanings of which I am still searching for. This is why I believe that the process is more important than the outcome. It fortifies the creative practice. I generally work with paints and canvas and have explored digital media as well. My current body of work will be exploring textile as a medium.
What is your favourite colour and why? My current favourites are burnt sienna and shades of purple. Both give a sense of disintegration and pain. My all-time favourite is black. It is powerful and has the ability to express two sides of the same coin.
What inspires you as an artist? Everyday life is a constant source of inspiration. Emotional struggles and the impact it has on one’s daily life and surroundings is the underlying theme of my paintings. Emotions are not just individual internal feelings; they are influenced by strong social and cultural contexts. Fear and conflict are themes I predominantly work with.
Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I enjoy the Manama Souq; the streets, space and architecture is full of character. I also love visiting Block 338. The relationship between art and the space offers the area a different dynamic. n

A Woman Empowered in Bahrain In my youth I don’t recall ever referring to the term empowerment in regards to my life at least. Now you won’t go a day without hearing it on media channels. I’m a woman empowered living in Bahrain. A place where I got married, started a family, divorced, single parenting my daughter for 5 years now and opened my business consultancy. The very catalysts that propelled me on my own journey to becoming whole and happy. I broke open saw what was inside, unlearned and had to let go of everything to rebuild my-self. Struggle after struggle with limited or no support are in retrospect the curriculum that triggered me to break through those infamous internal firewalls. You heard of these; lack of deservedness and not feeling you are enough. Statistically practically everyone feels this to some degree. Now becoming stronger and more confident my independence is ignited. I hold the responsibility and accountability for my own life. This is what empowers me. To some degree this has to begin with how we see and feel about ourselves first, and then others (female or male). It is a very much an inside job. Sometimes, we don’t want go for an opportunity because of our conditioning, history, social heredity or our own firewalls. For some, empowering beliefs have been planted since childhood, or not, while for others it remains dormant until a number of catalysts take their cue (life’s lessons or blessings) to trigger us to change. (mindset, actions and behaviors). I’ m a passionate practitioner of Integrated empowerment. Consciousness for ‘Owning and Enabling” Self-Reliance and Increase in others. This has been my “purpose work” and way of life for many years. It’s threaded through my daily actions and especially in my daughter. If I speak any less empowering, she reminds me, only validating it’s been planted. She certainly is empowered. My attitude and perspective continue to evolve. It inspires within me greater expansion while enabling others in the highest good. Share what makes you feel empowered and/or how you inspire others to be empowered. n

What’s the secret to writing a global hit? The secret is to listen to people and understand what will make them happy. I spend a lot of time with people and when I produce, I always focus on delivering a song that spreads good vibes and love.
What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in your personal/professional life? My biggest mistake was to unfortunately trust the wrong people a couple of times. What single action in your personal/ professional life that has brought you the most success? It was to never give up even when I was ready to give up. Also, to have faith and believe in my destiny!

Going Out We tried the ‘Play Cod’ which is black cod with a cream reduction. Refreshingly light, savory and perfected with a little tanginess, this miso glazed dish is one of our favourite dishes. Chef Meidy shares that the Play Cod is a hit among their guests and judging from the exceptionally cooked dish, it’s not hard to see why. This masterpiece goes perfectly with a rich Sauvignon Blanc that echoes the creaminess of the sauce yet acidic enough as a palate cleanser for the next dish. Served with a sour cream jalapeño sauce, the ‘Corn-fed Baby
Chicken’ with yogurt saffron tickles the taste buds of those trying it. We don’t remember the dish lasting for more than five minutes, yet we won’t forget how each bite was incredibly tender and tantalizing. The ‘Lobster Spaghetti’ isn’t anything less than incredible. Chef Meidy shares how this dish is an honor to his cultural roots. According to him, each part of the the lobster, from its meat to the juice, is utilised on making the dish delicious. To add a twist, fried basil and leek are added. Yum! The beautiful fillet of beef should always be the star of any Beef Wellington. Decadent enough and guaranteed to impress, Play’s take on this classic dish doesn’t disappoint. Pairing this with the merlot dominated wines will definitely hit the spot!

Last but certainly not the least, the sweet ending! Chef Meidy served us with the ‘La Roche’ Dessert which might be our new favourite finish in the city. Like some pièce de résistance, it was imaginative and beautifully presented; we almost didn’t want to dig in! However, we’re glad that we did because it was delightful in every way. Has the world gone crazy with Marie Kondo? Last month I wrote about New Year Resolutions and despite being well into the year with our second month, I wanted to keep on theme and discuss something that’s currently taking the globe by storm. And that is Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. Now if you don’t know who Marie Kondo is, it’s likely you don’t use social media or you don’t watch Netflix (or possibly don’t have any friends) because it seems her philosophy has infected many homes the world over. What’s interesting is, I was set to write for you about this last year, before the Netflix series became a hot topic, thinking I was late to the KonMari (the Marie Kondo trademarked process used to declutter your home) party; her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing became a #1 New York Times bestseller in 2014. Late last year, I became a decluttering psycho, my husband offering to help us declutter our well loved and lived in, but overflowing family home, to my annoyance that he wanted to do it out of Marie Kondo’s recommended order; “No we can’t do family photos now, we MUST do our wardrobe and books first.” I got waylaid with end of year busy-ness but if ever I wanted or needed the inspiration to get back on the tidying up bandwagon, the launching of this Netflix series was definitely enough to reignite it. And it seems I’m not the only one. Even in Australia, reports are well known charities are refusing any more donations due to overflowing warehouses blaming, this new minimising trend. If anything could be a study on western excess, this television show is it. Do we really need so much stuff? Apparently the process isn’t a quick one and it can take you a whole year to do a family sized home, but the promise is, once you do it once, you should never need to do it again.
