Leaders in Bahrain

Hospitality Bahrain Confidential

interviews the leaders in Bahrain's hospitality industry about what's new, what's next and what makes them the best.

Bahrain Hospitality

Lilian Roger General Manager ART Rotana

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? I would say “adaptable” is the word which describes me the best. Having worked in 8 different countries - Scotland, France, Tunisia, Algeria, Japan, China, Australia and now in Bahrain- certainly requires a high level of adaptability to accept and excel within different work environments, cultures, traditions, processes, guests’ expectations, day to day life... and so on. If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Recognition of the industry. Unfortunately, the hospitality industry is often seen as a career dead-end or in certain cultures, the industry is associated to inappropriate working environment. This is extremely sad, as the industry has a lot to offer. Everyone in the organization has a key role to play, while also working simultaneously to create a treasured times and unforgettable experiences for our guests - this is what we, at Rotana, strive to do every day. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? A lot of work and effort has been applied over the last few years by BTEA to promote Bahrain as a great destination and with this activation we have witnessed new markets’ opening that have had a positive effect on the tourism industry. Russia, Germany, India are a few examples of success stories generating additional revenue and awareness for the Kingdom of Bahrain. BTEA is not only targeting the international market but also gives a major role to regional tourism. The fact that Manama has been appointed the “Capital of Arab Tourism 2020” is another great example of Bahrain’s strong desire to promote the destination locally.

So, if I had to pick only one success, it surely would be the ART Rotana Team.

24 Bahrain Confidential February 2020

What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? Our biggest successes have been to overcome the continuous challenges faced during the year! I am extremely proud of the team achievements in ART Rotana, especially within such trading conditions. It might sound very cliché to say that the human factor is the most important component in our industry but why should I change the truth and reality. A hotel makes it happen thanks to its team members who, daily and consistently, are dedicated and committed to deliver exceptional service and product. So, if I had to pick only one success, it surely would be the ART Rotana Team. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? There are many great mottos out there, but I like to use two a bit more than others: “Never give up” and “challenge the status quo”. Both demonstrate a will to move forward and keep on finding new options, ideas and solutions with an acceptance for “failure” and “risk”. A sense of constant movement transpires through these two sayings and this is what drives me. n

Bahrain Hospitality

Gilles Nicolas General Manager Crowne Plaza Bahrain

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? Passionate.

If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Eco-consciousness is on the rise in the hospitality industry - thanks to changing customer preferences, demographics, and more. Guests are now looking for sustainable and authentic experiences and it is but imperative for hotels to go green. Sustainability efforts are to be implemented so that hotels stay competitive, save money and most importantly, reduce the negative impact on the environment. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? Crowne Plaza as a brand is revolutionizing business and leisure travel with incredible momentum. Our goal is to still be the first and definitive choice for business hotel stays around the world. With the emergence of technologies and changes, to consumer requirements, it is but important for our hotel to go beyond its comfort zone. 2020 will surely be a year of opportunity and we are ready to explore the opportunities that the New Year brings. One opportunity is the continuous development of our food and beverage offerings as I believe there is always room for improvement. Another opportunity is our MICE, being one of the largest convention spaces in the country, our focus is to bring in not only smaller meetings but larger conferences, exhibitions and weddings as well. Lastly, more sustainable efforts will be implemented to match the demand of guests which are sustainable travel options.

Crowne Plaza as a brand is revolutionizing business and leisure travel with incredible momentum.

What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? The biggest challenge remains the market conditions and the increase of competition in Bahrain which is affecting all areas of our business including restaurants, bars, conference and events. However, for Crowne Plaza Bahrain, 2019 has been a successful year in many aspects, I refer in particular to maintaining the same level of stay experience for our guests despite the on-going maintenance and refurbishment works around the hotel. We also made sure that our guests are comfortable during the process making their safety and convenience our priority at all times. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? As Phil Jackson puts it, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” The same is true for mine. My greatest strengths are my team. Over the last couple of years, The Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s performance has increased in all areas of our business. This is all due to the dedication of my team. n

Bahrain Hospitality

Adnan Gilitwala Director Epitome Restaurant & Coffee Shop Management

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? “Free-spirited” (even though it’s technically two words, but that fits in this case). I prefer to approach situations in my own way and tend to think of unconventional methods of doing things, instead of conforming to one particular school of thought. As a leader, what are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? My greatest strength is my team, as I have been lucky enough to work with people who share my ambitions and desire for high standards of quality and service. Personally however, I believe my patience, and ability to build strong relationships are also strengths that have benefited me greatly. I also refuse to micromanage as I have seen that making people accountable improves their overall performance as well as the company as a whole. My weaknesses on the other hand would be that I can be very stubborn and often need a lot of convincing before I change my mind. I can also sometimes suffer from a lack of motivation, thankfully though my team are always on hand to change that when needed. My last weakness is that I can be very blunt and direct which isn’t always appreciated by people. What’s your vision for Epitome? I would like to continue exploring the many different avenues of business in the industry with Epitome. There is honestly no limit to what can be done in this industry and I want to create as many verticals as possible and establish a strong self-sustaining company that is capable of delivering the highest levels of quality and diversity. Our main goal is growth and we hope to be able to have our presence in many more markets. What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? This year has seen us make our first international footprint by opening a branch of our first concept in Saudi Arabia. We are very proud of achieving this since the company is still very young. Additionally, we have launched our FMCGs Distribution division which has been extremely exciting and dynamic, and in a short time we have achieved a respectable market presence with no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

My greatest strength is my team, as I have been lucky enough to work with people who share my ambitions and desire for high standards of quality and service.

26 Bahrain Confidential February 2020

Our challenges in the past year and continuing into this year have to do with adapting to the ever changing market and consumer spending habits and trends. The overall situation of the markets globally has not been the best for business, however we are optimistic and believe the future will be much better for us as a company. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill n

Bahrain Hospitality

Richard Raab General Manager Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? Optimistic - "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Well I actually love the industry for what it is and that is why I am still in it. One thing that the industry needs to though, and we have started here already and worldwide with Four Seasons, is to think more about reducing plastic usage and wastage in general. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? The hotel has gone from strength to strength every year since its opening. This year, we are celebrating our fifth year in operation here in Bahrain and we are very proud of what has been achieved since then by the team. Just recently, we added a beautiful sandy beach and also a customized water play park in the shape of a Bahraini Dhow that will be lots of fun for the kids but also educate them at the same time. I am also a firm believer that everyone involved in Bahrain’s tourism industry needs to work together as a team to make the pie larger for all, rather than trying to compete for what is already here.

The hotel has gone from strength to strength every year since its opening. This year, we are celebrating our fifth year in operation here in Bahrain.

What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? There are always ups and downs during the year, the key is to stay positive and keep going and never give up. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle n

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? Passionate. My strength as a person is that I am very passionate with my profession. That makes me always look for new projects and new challenges that can make our business grow. In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? By being open minded and adaptable to the changes. We also try to be innovative and creative in our offers and promotions to satisfy the needs of our clientele. Opportunities, whether it be small or risky, should be taken advantage of to lead the market. What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? Being the preferred choice for all types of events will always remain as a challenge for everyone in the hospitality industry. This is the reason why we always strive to provide our best in all aspects. Through the efforts of our team, we had the success of being one of the most popular venue for fashion shows, night life experience, as well as weddings, VIP Corporate and more.

Through the efforts of our team, we had the success of being one of the most popular venue for fashion shows, night life experience, as well as weddings, VIP Corporate and more.

I’m also happy to announce that a new and unique concept will be coming soon to Gallery 21. This has long been awaited by our clientele. Which part of Bahrain is your favorite and why? I have been living in Bahrain for sometime and Adliya has always been my favorite. However, there are other interesting areas like Seef District. n Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? "The only way to do great work is to love what you do."

Fares Yactine Area General Manager The Gulf Hotel Bahrain

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one

word? Diplomatic. If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Hospitality is not only a job, it’s a lifestyle. Unfortunately, today, we see many new joiners to the industry considering it as “only a job”. If we can change that perception for the new upcoming generation joining hospitality, that will help in uplifting the hospitality services. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? My vision for 2020 is to be able to create alliances with one of the worldwide brands in order to gain more exposure for multi-national business, enhance our customer data base and increase market share.

My vision for 2020 is to be able to create alliances with one of the worldwide brands in order to gain more exposure for multi-national business.

30 Bahrain Confidential February 2020

What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? After substantial investment in the hotel facility done in 2018, business expectations for the year 2019 were high. Through the commitment of the team towards exceeding guest expectations and a sound business strategy we managed to close the year with satisfactory results despite the growing competition and numbers of flagship managed hotels in the town. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “Customers may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel”. n

Bahrain Hospitality

Philipp Economou General Manager InterContinental Regency Hotel

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? More like two words… people oriented and fast-paced.

If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? I would like to enhance the focus on sustainability. Together, both as the hospitality industry and consumers (being our guests), we have a responsibility to reduce the negative impact on the environment. We have already started developing a culture within our organisation in which we encourage our colleagues and guests to start playing an active role by reducing their ecological footprint and to be part of our environmental-friendly practices. In addition, we are also active about instructing our suppliers to reduce waste as well. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? In an increasingly competitive environment, InterContinental Hotels Group is well placed to accelerate the growth of our core business. With the Middle East leading the emerging market population boom over the past decade, demographic and social change is a key issue that we will need to tackle, and tackle fast. Whilst historically designed to cater to middle-aged business and leisure tourists from advanced economies, we must today transform to cater to a wider variety of visitors, age groups and backgrounds. From virtual reality to artificial intelligence, technology is innovating at a faster speed than ever before. And to stand out in the competitive hotel industry, we are shifting focus more and more on providing an outstanding guest experience by incorporating technology. Some of the key focuses still remains on our exclusive culinary offerings providing guests elevated experiences and a targeted focus on MICE segments to bring in corporate meetings and local weddings. Lastly but most importantly this year’s attention is on sustainability. It’s quickly becoming a priority — if not a moral imperative. We are implementing many sustainable efforts to match our guest’s needs.

The challenge remains the market conditions with an influx of new hotel rooms in spite of reduced demand and prolonged economic challenges which directly affects all aspects of our business that includes meetings & events, restaurant, bars and other facilities within the hotel. However, 2019 has been a successful year in many aspects; the re-launch of Ramadan tent, a new Brunch concept, Spanish week and the introduction of a themed New Year’s Eve party for the very first time. A major success story for our property, is the launch of our newly refurbished Club InterContinental rooms. This complete facelift of our top three floors will provide our valued guests with a modern twist on a classical look that they have known and loved for many years. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Albert Einstein n

T

ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? I would describe myself as passionate. Life offers abundance of opportunities, the difference in reaching the heights of success or not is passion. I am careful how I spend my time and ensure whatever interaction or thing I am working on, that I pour 100% of my soul into it and moreover the people I surround myself with also follow this mantra. If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Lots of people take hospitality for granted, missing the beauty and soul of this industry. Crafting special moments where you can bring people together is a rare commodity that should be nurtured. Hospitality means being hospitable, it’s exactly like opening your house to your guests; you want people to be comfortable, you want to make sure your guests get what they need, and feel at home. Mahonia is crafted to live this vision and I hope to see more gastronomy-focused concepts open in the GCC where hospitality is in our bones. Can you shed light on your vision for your businesses this 2020? For 2020, my team and myself are now starting to see the rewards of putting Bahrain on the map as a Gastronomic destination; but we cannot stop there. 2020 will see a host of innovation as well as unique collaborations. You will be able to watch our mission come to life over the coming months!

Mahonia is crafted to live this vision and I hope to see more gastronomy-focused concepts open in the GCC where hospitality is in our bones.

What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? Mahonia being the gastronomic destination created its own challenges and opportunities following on from an amazing launch year. My team really showed me what passion, expertise and commitment can produce. Their dedication to a delivering my vision and a unique experience overcame all hurdles and now we have found the global market taking note. This came to life especially in collaborations with some of the world’s best chefs including 4 hands dinners & Kitchen takeovers in my Fine Dining restaurant Mahonia, such as Mauro Collagreco from Mirazur in Menton, Bruno Oger from Villa Archange in La Cannet, Chef Augustin Balbi from Haku in Hong Kong, and Jorge Vallejo from Quintonil in Mexico. 2020 is already shaping up to be something amazing (watch this space for something special in February!). With the continued local and global patronage I couldn’t be more excited for the future of Mahonia. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Be honest to your truth.n

Every day, there is something new and therefore, you have to be able to change, adapt and move forward setting your business for success. If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Hospitality and technology are becoming closer more than ever; guests can book, chat for requests, check in and out using a mobile app which may limit the human touch. I do welcome these changes as that makes it easier for our guests but, I would remind all hoteliers that the core of our business is the guest so don’t lose this core; make that call and ask the guest about their stay and continue the personal touch which is so important. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? Well, 2020 is a year for exciting new things for us. We’re all ecstatic about the launch of our new restaurant, “Crossroads” by March. It will feature a bright, modern and cozy rendezvous for everyone who enjoys comfortable dining with an urban flare. ell us something personal – how would you describe yourself in one word? Passionate.

If you can change one thing about hospitality in general, what would it be? Focusing more on guests’ satisfaction and personal touch by emphasizing on the traditional face to face interaction while containing the digital correspondence. I believe personal experience, touch and word of mouth are still more effective than interacting with guests through social media and other online channels. I would say rather stay basic and provide unique and personal experiences when guests are staying with us at the hotel. Can you shed light on your vision for the hotel this 2020? To complete the entire hotel renovation soon and host a grand opening ceremony announcing our completion and promoting our new state-of-art facilities. We want to provide a unique experience by ensuring that we deliver consistent quality and high level of service to our hotel guests at every point. Last but not least, reposition the hotel as one of the brand new leading hotels in the Kingdom. What have been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? Our biggest challenge was definitely to run the hotel’s operations while going through a major renovation. This meant we had to find the best possible solutions to minimize guest’s disturbance, but also keeping the staff on board and motivated under challenging circumstances.

We want to provide a unique experience by ensuring that we deliver consistent quality and high level of service to our hotel guests at every point.

S

ince its birth in the 1960s, the Seiko 5 Sports collection of watches has delivered consistently high levels of reliability, durability, performance and value that have endeared it to lovers of mechanical watches worldwide. A broad new collection of this series of timepieces is reborn with a brand-new design, and retains all the same values it has upheld for over half a century.

The number ‘5’ represented the promise of five key attributes. The Inception In the early ‘60s, the first ever Seiko 5 watch, Seiko Sportmatic 5, was the horologist’s and Japan’s first ever automatic day-date watch. The number ‘5’ represented the promise of five key attributes; an automatic movement, a day-date display at the three o’clock position, water resistance, a recessed crown at the four o’clock position and a case and bracelet built for durability. A few years later, Seiko 5 Sports was created for the ever-growing number of men and women who wanted a watch they could trust as they played sports. It offered enhanced water resistance, a strengthened crystal and luminous hands and hour markers.

52 Bahrain Confidential February 2020

Throughout the next decades, Seiko 5 Sports found great international favour as a ‘go-anywhere’ watch that offered a unique look and extraordinary value, particularly popular among younger watch lovers, thanks to eye-catching designs with dials in vivid colors that shocked and delighted in equal measure.

A Makeover Shaped by Heritage Though the new Seiko 5 Sports draws its inspiration from the five decades of its predecessor’s success, every creation in the new collection shares an updated version of the celebrated case and all have the same arrow-shaped minute hands, distinctive hour markers and one-way rotating bezel. The movements are all Seiko’s tried and trusted automatic Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a four-hour power reserve and a hacking second hand. The five styles: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense, have new dials with three-dimensional hour markers and the collection embraces a wide range of straps and bracelets from steel mesh to silicone/ leather hybrids. This range of wristwatches is available at Ambassador Stores located at Bab-Al-Bahrain, Manama. n For more information: www.seiko5sports.com/en/

Can Strangers become Family? Being an introvert, the idea of meeting new people never sounds exciting to me. There are a hundred questions in my head- would we get along? Will we find some common topic to speak about? Would they be friendly? What if we do not share any common interest and end up just staring on our cell phones? That would be so awkward, right? Can’t I just go out with the same old people I know since forever? Their company is so comfortable after all! That being said, imagine the horror and shock I received when presented with the idea of travelling with total strangers- on room sharing basis! Wait, WHAT? I would be staying with women I’ve never even met? Would have to share a room with them? That too, for 20 long days? Honestly, I was not comfortable with the idea, at all. I thought it would be a total disaster, a sheer mess. But what options did I have? None! So, it began. I met my roommates and thought- not bad, hope it goes well. Days went by, we started with normal day to day conversations, and before we knew it, I was so comfortable around them I didn’t even care about my appearance. The total strangers were now friends like family, who cared for each other, selflessly shared their stuff, didn’t think twice before helping and tried their best to be as harmless as possible. It all came so naturally, as if we’ve known each other since forever. It was only then I realized that such connections are not made on their own; they are created, with efforts and time. We all were different in so many ways, yet blended in perfectly well, because each one tired their best to fit in- to be good first and expect good next. Like this group, every relation and every bond need time and efforts from all the people involved and only if everyone is willing to be their best self, strangers can become family; or at least friends forever. n

A short talk with interesting people living in Bahrain!

Nationality: Bahraini/ American

Personality Profile How are you finding Bahrain? I love it here, I love going out and meeting familiar faces all the time. The quality of the food is high in this country and there is a beautiful blend of tastes at every inch of this little island. The most thing I love about is the people. They are so genuine and friendly. What’s your favourite place in Bahrain and why? I love Adliya, Block 338. It has varieties of delicious restaurants and fun pubs to hangout any day of the week. I really appreciate quality food and good time with my friends so my source of relief is to chill at one of those places. What do you most like, and dislike, about your work? I love working with my colleagues, coming up with new ideas, methods and marketing plan to promote the hotel activities. I believe everything in this life is based on communication, that’s why I love my role and it’s so easy for me to socialize with anyone even those of whom I never knew before. What I don’t like about my job is working long hours and missing

seeing my kids before they go to bed. Biggest lesson in life: Don’t ever give up, there is nothing called impossible in my life dictionary. For every single thing you lose, you gain something else. Enjoy life and be nice to everyone cause for sure, life will reward you back the same. What makes you happy? In general, I am a very happy person but what really makes me happy is spending time with my 2 sons, Adam who is 3 years old and Daniel-Conor, my 2-year old boy. Who are you listening to at the moment? I love Martin Garrix’s music but I appreciate classic songs by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Johnny Cash. Favorite motto or saying: You don’t need anyone’s approval. Life is too short, do whatever makes you happy as long as you don't hurt yourself or anyone else. Motto by Sumaya Dashti! J n
