Health & Wellness Eat Better Food is a delightful sensory experience – why not use it to take advantage of the benefits? Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health. Weight loss isn’t the only reason to change up our eating habits – sometimes eating healthier simply makes us feel happier. However, eating healthy doesn’t mean that you have to give up your favourite comfort food! It is all about balance. You can still enjoy you favourite foods in moderation. The key is to eat them once in a while while balancing them out with physical activity. There are several ways on how to start eating better this year. Here are some: • Eat fresh produce! • Indulge smarter – less sugar doesn’t have to mean less deliciousness. • Snack smarter with healthy options that you can keep at your desk. • Pick one day a month and have a healthy dinner date. • Be mindful during meal times.
Stay Hydrated Water makes up about two-thirds of who we are – it accounts for 60 percent of our body and is essential to every cell. Fluids carry nutrients to your cells, flush bacteria from our bladder, and prevent constipation. Also, staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to stay healthy! Some of the benefits of proper hydration are the following: • It combats fatigue – water helps cells compete important enzymatic activities which contribute to a good sleep and restoration of bodily functions. Also, several studies have shown that water can relieve headaches in those who are dehydrated. • Aids in weight loss – staying hydrated can help people lose weight; it is due to the fact that water can increase satiety and boost metabolic rate. • Prevents formation of kidney stones - Water is an ideal solvent and it prevents salts and minerals from gathering, which could eventually form into kidney stones.

Health & Wellness Invest in rest In today’s fast paced world, we’re always on the go and sometimes, we forget how to stop. Giving up rest and relaxation wears you down and takes a toll on your overall wellbeing. Relaxing whenever possible and whatever way work for you (whether it’s sleeping, taking a walk, reading a book) is healthier than you think. Not only does it delay the progression of disease, but it may also speed recovery.
Travel
This does not mean you need to book a month long trip to the Maldives. You can just take a day trip out of town and go explore. Research shows that not only are vacations good for your health, they may also increase your productivity, make your happier and more content.
Pay it forward Doing good for others can have a powerful, positive effect on the immune system. At the same time, it helps you feel more connected to others, inspires confidence and promotes overall emotional happiness.
There’s no set rules to living healthy but it’s important to recognize the aspects of your life that you can control right now; your health and daily habits are definitely one of them.
Meditate Meditation is a skill you can learn to cope with stress, get a better night's rest, succeed academically, and achieve overall health and wellness. It also enables you to let go of past difficulties, irritations, anger, grievances and conflicts by just being present with what is.
Laugh! The good old medicine of the soul has been tested and proven by scientists over the decades. According to studies, laughter relieves stress, improves mood and is even related to boosting immunity and preventing heart disease. Laughing helps keep stress levels low and positive feelings high.

et me introduce you to Blacksmith Fitness Center; a gym that provides everything first class from equipment to customer service to facilities. I’ve been weight training for around 3 years and having a good gym to access, wherever I am in the world, is vital. The gym has literally become my second home. Owned by businessman Mr. Mohammed Moamen and his partner IFBB Pro Sami Al Haddad, Blacksmith is kitted out with state-of-the-art facilities and some of the best I’ve seen… far better than a lot of the gyms I’ve trained in back in London. The trainers are experienced, friendly and will always help guide to ensure you’re in the correct form while maximizing your workouts to achieve results. The fitness centre is well sectioned with a room dedicated for legs, with the

main gym area sectioned out with dumbbells, chest machines/ benches, back machines, shoulders and a lot more. Overall, there’s plenty of equipment - even at peak times I never find myself waiting on someone to finish using equipment; which is a situation I find really annoying. Aside from the amenities in the gym, there’s a bar serving freshly made protein shakes, BCAA drinks, pre-workout drinks, etc. - all at a reasonable price. If you choose not to buy one, they provide blenders/juicers with fresh ice cubes for you to make your own after your workout (this is something I love, because without ice, protein shakes can almost be warm and it’s not pleasant – ice cold all the way!). Upstairs, you’ve got a café selling
Going upstairs, there’s a cardio section with an array of treadmills, cross trainers and stair machines. Also, a section with various ab workout machines. In the changing rooms you’re provided with a clean Blacksmith branded towel and a larger clean bath towel in your locker should you wish to use their showers. There’s also a hot tub, sauna and steam room. To our fellow readers who are gym lovers like myself it would be my recommendation for you to check this gym out even for a one off trial – it pretty much has everything you need. Ask HV Holistic… Every year I struggle to stick to my New Year’s resolutions. How can I make new habits for 2018, and stick to them?
Jemma replies: Picking New Year’s resolutions that are achievable, can seem daunting, especially if you have failed to stick to them in the past. Use previous experience to reflect on what you could do differently for 2018. How to pick the right resolution: • Avoid making only fitness related resolutions, where failing on one may cause you to lose your motivation completely. Try making some lifestyle or career goals, too. • Pick a goal that is S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) • Choose something you’ve never tried to achieve before. • Work on one goal at a time, and break it down into smaller chunks throughout the year. How to stick to your resolution: • Regularly remember your reason ‘WHY’ you wanted to make a change, and you’re more likely to remain motivated to stick to the plan. • Reward yourself when you’ve done well, and celebrate mini successes daily. • Positive reinforcement helps create and solidify new habits.
• Stick a visual aid of your resolution to your phone, in your car, or on your fridge. • Share your resolutions with family and friends. Having people to be accountable to will help but, make sure they’re a positive influence!
January 1st is simply another day in the calendar. If you’re serious about making a change in your life, why wait until NYE to do it? If you fall off the wagon, simply dust yourself off and start again the next day. Good luck! n
Bad habits such as smoking or over-eating, are developed over time. Stopping these habits will also take time. Don’t try to change everything in your life, just focus on one thing. Setbacks are inevitable, how you deal with them will determine your success.

Lastly, some food for thought. Consider why you’re setting resolutions at all.

Fitness Goals? Make the change you have been wishing for this 2018 with Fitness by Kiro.
I
t's that time of year again, when everyone is making their New Year's resolutions or at least thinking of one. Many people begin an exercise program, but abandon it before Easter comes along. However, you can increase your chances for long-term success if you follow these simple tips to achieve your fitness goals.
Prepare your mind & body Make sure you're both physically and mentally ready to start an exercise program. It is very important that you have confidence in your exercise ability. Bring a friend or surround yourself with fitness-orientated people.
Select a type of exercise that you are more likely to enjoy doing.
You need a fitness plan This is a very important step for everyone. You need to create a plan that is most suitable for YOU.
Ensure that your plan is both challenging but achievable Think of your new resolution as a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You are much more likely to be successful if you take it easy at the beginning and build your fitness goals from then onwards.
Consider a personal trainer As an expert in the field of bodybuilding, fitness and personal training, I highly recommend getting a personal trainer to help you through your fitness journey. This applies to both beginner and advanced athletes as they all commonly want to see greater progress and move to the next level. C
an you tell us a bit of your background?
I grew up in India, obtained my MSc (Hons) degree from the UK and moved to Bahrain five years ago to enhance my professional career by gaining some international experience. I have been fortunate enough to spend large parts of my life in three continents. Primarily, my professional background is real estate and construction orientated, but I recently sought a new direction in life and decided to move into the food and beverage industry.
What motivated you to open Phoenix? Phoenix Eatery & Shisha Lounge was born out of the combination of two things; the discovery of an incredibly unique property and recognizing a gap in the market for a high-end shisha
My vision was to establish a unique brand that emphasizes the beauty of combining both contemporary and traditional taste and culture.
establishment. The restaurant is located directly on the seafront with uninterrupted views of Muharraq, Dilmunia and Amwaj Island and is perfect for plane spotting fanatics! Quality food and good service can be found in many restaurants, but what makes Phoenix so unique is the restaurants attention to detail and unrivalled setting. As a shisha lover myself I have always struggled to find a fivestar venue to enjoy shisha so when the opportunity came up to start something of my own, I had absolutely no hesitation.
What was the vision behind this? My vision was to establish a unique brand that emphasizes the beauty of combining both contemporary and traditional taste and culture. I wanted to create a brand which has depth and meaning so the team thought long and hard about the concept. A Phoenix in Greek mythology was a bird that could live for a long time and could also be regenerated or reborn from the ashes of its predecessor, so the Phoenix’s strong association with fire and
longevity are traits and facets which are also associated with the restaurant.
What is the concept behind the logo? The logo is essentially an icon that is based on the head of the Phoenix and the triangle shape which represents fire. Together the logo highlights the passion of the burning Phoenix in a modern, but minimalistic way.
Bahrain Confidential January 2018 29
Feature The number of restaurants and lounges in Bahrain has increased over the years, what do you think makes Phoenix special? We have 8 VIP rooms with private balconies overlooking the sea, a two story water feature, two large outside screens for live sports and a fusion of contemporary and traditional décor providing the perfect setting for our valued guests. Where in Bahrain can you watch the airplane’s land, the sun-set and the sea glisten whilst enjoying top quality food, fresh juices and shisha?
What’s next for Phoenix? Obviously it is still very early days so before thinking about future outlets we are determined to make this restaurant a successful one. A huge amount of effort has gone into creating this unique concept so we are very keen to ensure our standards are perfected and maintained first. We would love to explore opening another Phoenix in the future, but location is absolutely critical, and finding one which matches this is a huge challenge. A phoenix is a long-lived bird and this ethos is echoed in our restaurant, we are in it for the long-haul and determined to be a success.
30 Bahrain Confidential January 2018
Feature Phoenix is a modern restaurant and shisha lounge, located on the beautiful shores of the Investment Gateway Island in Hidd, that serves both international and local cuisine in a very stylish contemporary/traditional setting. The restaurant and lounge capture the mystique myth and charm of the phoenix with its contemporary arabesque aesthetic and feel. n
How do you cope with the demands of being a new mum and an entrepreneur in the same year? 2017 has been a great year so far. My daughter was born in April and the restaurant launch is in December so it’s been hectic to say the least. Thankfully I have a great team at Phoenix which means I am able to find the right balance between being a mother and running the restaurant. Its tiring and challenging at times, but very rewarding.
What is your key to success? We pride ourselves on providing a unique venue which offers quality food, excellent service and an exceptional experience. I’ve always believed that if you do things a bit different and slightly better you have the chance to succeed and that is what we strive to achieve. I
had the pleasure of staying at a Rotana hotel for a weekend last month. For those who don’t already know; the Rotana hotels are a relatively new/modern brand of hotels in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey and they’re stunning hotels, too. In the Rotana group of hotels in Dubai there’s a total of 11 hotels, each offering something very different. On this trip I was staying at the Media Rotana. As it was early December the weather was bliss. It hovered around 26-27 degrees during the day and dropped to a cool
temperature at night – it reminded me of the summers we have back home in the UK. Of course, because it was early December, the festive season was in full swing (in my opinion festive

Lifestyle season should start in early December but it seems every year it starts earlier and I even noticed Christmas gifts in shops in October – madness!). A big effort was put into this property for this special time of year with decorations and making it feel ‘Christmassy’. Big and well decorated Christmas trees are vital and the tree at the Media Rotana was seriously impressive. Since I arrived early to check-in, I was guided to the Club Rotana Lounge. The perfect quiet place to open up the laptop and crack on with some work whilst having fresh coffee, croissants and omelets served to you in a comfy chair! For business purposes, the location of the

as set menu; I had the grilled octopus with stewed red onion from this menu and it was simply incredible.
The hotel facilities cater for everyone including free speedy wifi, swimming pool, airport shuttle, gym and various restaurants. Channels, located on the ground floor, offer a cracking breakfast buffet… In particular I loved the fresh waffles (which I covered in maple syrup). I would also strongly recommend Prego’s, which is an Italian restaurant serving up some delicious dishes and homemade pizzas/breads on their wood fire oven – showcased in their open view kitchen. I attended their Friday brunch which had loads of Italian specialties on offer as well
Now onto the room – I had the club suite which offered loads of space with a divide between the bedroom and the lounge which gave it a real homely feel. The bed was generous size and extra comfy, exactly what I needed after a long day of meeting after meeting. The en-suite bathroom was large giving plenty of space for getting showered and ready in the mornings. For me, the Media Rotana is the go-to hotel for being located near Media City. Luxury
Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Ramada Bahrain's newly appointed General Manager, Andreas Runge.
C
ongratulations on your recent appointment as General Manager! What are your plans for Ramada in the year 2018? Basically, there are two core areas I will be focusing on with my team in 2018. In Bahrain’s tough market competition, we will work on increasing our market share through innovation and strengthening customer relationships. Secondly, we will reposition our two F&B outlets, The Exchange English Pub and the Le Jardin All-Day-Dining with adapted offers, menus and fresh ideas.
One of the main challenges of the future will be to make the right steps to meet the growing trend in digitisation.
What are the main attractions of Ramada Bahrain? Undoubtedly, it is our reputation and history of existing for 40 years in the market. Being perfectly located opposite the Al-Gudaibiya Palace and close to Al-Fateh Grand Mosque, guests will definitely enjoy a hassle-free experience of these attractions. We also offer a high quality experience with our facilities and unparalleled services. and the restaurants and bars that fit perfectly to today’s business as well as leisure travelers.
34 Bahrain Confidential January 2018
What’s the best thing about the hotel’s location? Ramada Bahrain is perfectly located at the lush landcaped gardens of Al-Gudaibiya Palace and close to Al-Fateh Grand Mosque. Additionally, it is very close to the fashionable and lively district of Block 338 that has a lot of entertainment options. The hotel is simply in the perfect location!
What are the challenges of the hotel industry at the moment and how does this affect Ramada Bahrain? One of the main challenges of the future will be to make the right steps to meet the growing trend in digitisation – especially in an area as the GCC, with this high ratio of a young population. Furthermore, we will be facing a huge increase in hotel room supply, as we are facing new hotels coming up now and in the near future. But Ramada Bahrain has seen growing competition for the last 40 years and always kept its position.
What types of unforgettable experiences do you offer guests in order to ensure a great time for them and also that they return to Ramada Bahrain? Ramada Bahrain is an extraordinary combination of the Ramada core brand essences, such as uncompromising cleanliness and a great value for money ratio, topped up with long-established staff which served for the hotel for years or even decades. That makes the hotel so welcoming for our guests. n

A Taste of Where Coffee Began Nespresso launches limited edition coffees, celebrating the birthplaces of coffee.
T
o celebrate the launch of the Limited Edition coffees Arabica Ethiopia Harrar and Robusta Uganda, Nespresso partnered with London based illustrator, Mariana Rodrigues who designed the coffee capsule sleeves. Nespresso spoke to her to hear more about her inspiration:
An Interview with Nespresso and illustrator Mariana Rodrigues
This is the first time you have worked with Nespresso; why did you want to collaborate with them? It is a brand I respect a lot and the briefing was really captivating and caught my attention right away. I felt that together we could create some interesting visuals to help share the stories behind these amazing coffees.
The Nespresso ‘Discover Coffee Birth Places’ range is about finding out the stories behind the coffee, is this something you’re interested in? Absolutely. I think this isn’t talked about enough. It’s amazing how this little bean means so much to so many people! And to be able to tell the story of how it came to be and where it all started is a privilege. This range makes us more conscious consumers, hopefully this trend will continue.

Are you a coffee lover yourself? Oh absolutely! I LOVE coffee. Nothing beats the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I can definitely say it’s one of my favourite things in the world. When I was a little girl, my grandfather always left a small
Feature amount of coffee at the end of his cup so I could drink it with a small spoon — I loved that daily ritual and the taste of coffee. It’s amazing how a simple bean can taste so differently because of its origin.
Were you aware of the history behind Arabica and Robusta before you started the project? No, I didn’t know. Besides the myth of Kaldi and his goats, every fact was new to me. But it’s was really interesting to read and learn about the history behind something that is part of our everyday life — how it was discovered, how it spread across the globe and what it means to so many people.
Oh absolutely! I LOVE coffee. Nothing beats the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee.
THE MYTH OF ARABICA The curious goats Transport yourself to the ancient highlands of Ethiopia, where the story of Kaldi, a young goat herder begins. He sat in the shade one afternoon and watched over his goats. In the heat of the day, Kaldi drifted off to sleep and left his goats to wander off into the wilderness. The goats discovered and started to eat some red cherries from bushes. When Kaldi awoke to find his goats gone, he hastily went in search of them. He found them leaping and dancing around the mysterious bushes. He picked a cherry and tried it for himself. He too felt elevated and began to dance alongside his goats. A passing monk was extremely suspicious of the situation and decided to burn these mysterious cherries. Soon after he threw them in the flames, delicious aromas started to rise. Enchanted, the monk brushed the beans out of the fire, crushed them up and combined them with water to make the captivating drink we now know as Arabica coffee. Discover the Limited Edition Coffees There are four delicious coffees to try, available in Original formats. For Lungo lovers, the Arabica Ethiopia Harrar can be enjoyed both as an Espresso and as a Lungo:
Nespresso is passionate about sustainable coffee, are you also interested in sustainability?
Grapefruit & Thymus Coffee Cocktail Arabica Ethiopia Harrar – A delicious espresso with notes of ripe fruits, fresh flowers that boasts a remarkably velvety body. 100% Arabica from Harrar, the region where coffee was first commercialised on a large scale and exported globally Intensity: 5 Serving size: Espresso (40ml) or Lungo (110ml) Robusta Uganda – Surprisingly sweet and undeniably intense, rich in cacao notes. 100% Robusta Intensity: 10 Serving size: Espresso (40ml) or Ristretto (25ml) Arabica Ethiopia Harrar and Robusta Uganda will be available for a limited period from Nespresso boutiques from 15/01/2018 at Nespresso boutiques at Bahrain City Centre, Nespresso Booth at Seef Mall, Customer Care 8000 1999 and online at www.buynespresso.com n
Yes, and it’s irresponsible not to be in these days where information is so widespread. It goes beyond coffee, to everything we buy and consume really. Consumers should lead the way and buy more sustainable products — buy less, but better. The coffee is a great example where, 10, 20 years ago, the production was through unsustainable methods and practices. Today, we can buy coffee knowing exactly which farm it comes from, who produced it and even what altitude the beans were grown.

When my city sleeps
Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahraini artist, Leena Al Ayoobi.
Big
Eyes The Mask
What motivates you to get up in the morning? A new idea of a painting or a new project, keeps me up all night thinking and makes me wake up early to start the day with it
Which artwork do you most identify yourself with?
Leena Al Ayoobi is a self-taught artist born in Manama. Her artworks are influenced by her Arabian culture and traditions. For more information: leenzart.com
48 Bahrain Confidential January 2018
My favourite art work is the Mask. When I first started drawing professionally, I was very cautious of how will people perceive my art style, so I was masking it with what I thought was more “marketable”. However, that didn’t last long until I became more confident and then I’ve
unmasked my true style. Now I’m proud to have created a new art style (Japanese Arabian Folkloric Style) that is recognised around the region. This painting is so dear to me and despite many offers I will never sell it. It is hanging now in Dar Alfann shop in A’ali mall, sometimes I would borrow it and hang it in my studio for inspiration.
What does art mean to you? Art is a lifestyle and a way to express your feelings. I’ve been painting and drawing since I was 7 or 8 years old, but never had it as a career as I was in the banking and
Art business consultancy for more than 10 years. Only last year I quite and became a full-time artist; it changed the way I see life, I approach life. I see colour and beauty everywhere even in grey skies, something that I really missed when I was in an office for more than 12 hours a day.
Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished?
Peaceful Trinity
I start my art work with a sketch and background colour, and of course my favorite music playing in the background. To get the exact colors, I have extra lights in the studio: a mix of white and yellow to give me the natural color atmosphere. I am only satisfied with an art piece when I studied every inch and corner of it and made sure it is in harmony in terms of color and shape. I never force and completion date on my paintings, they might be a couple of days to finish or a couple of weeks. The painting is ready when it is ready.
Which part of your paintings is your favorite and why? I enjoy eye part the most. I keep it for the last, it gives life and a Soul to the art piece and I’ve been always fascinated with drawing eyes since I was a child. It has so many meanings and through the eye drawing, you can give a story to the character you are presenting. When I started my art journey back in 2014, I got a lot of comments on my art work and most people call it “big eyes art style”. When I started giving courses and workshops, I used the same name “Big Eyes” n The Wedding

People & Life we feel we can realise, even if past experiences have taught us otherwise. That’s the magic of this season. Having stepped onto the wrong side of my 20s, I’ve resolved to become as active as I can in 2018. Now, I’m not the outdoorsy one and heading to the gym or a zumba class, or taking up a sport is not my cup of tea. In fact, I’ve tried these in the past only to give up midway or discontinue after achieving the desired goal. I’ve figured that I can’t depend on will power to go about this. There has to be something I can look forward to or don’t see as a laborious task in order for me to stay committed. And it struck me – walking!

Bombay has plenty of scope to walk; to the church, to the vegetable market, from the railway station or bus stop back home… in fact, it’s common for people to commute on foot here as it is in most of your, my dear readers’, hometowns. In Bahrain and the Gulf though, we’re resigned to air conditioned cars, even if it’s just to grab a coffee during lunch break or pop by the local grocery store. I remember this one year, during my days at Bahrain Confidential, when Nick suggested we walk up to the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre. It was the last day of Jewellery Arabia and the traffic in Seef, where our office is, was maddening to say the least. We were enjoying the on-set of winter, ambling along the footpath when we realised that people in the cars that were lined up were staring at us like we had gone bonkers. It’s worth mentioning that we were the only ones walking on that stretch of the pavement. This is just one example of how uncommon walking is in Bahrain. Moreover, with the advent of new age workouts in the Kingdom including antigravity yoga, kangoo, zumba, spinning, what have you, this simple yet effective way to good health has been highly underrated.
In Bahrain and the Gulf though, we’re resigned to air conditioned cars, even if it’s just to grab a coffee during lunch break or pop by the local grocery store. The island has plenty of spaces to walk in the open; the 3km walkway in Arad, The Walk in Riffa, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Park in Hidd to name a few. Aimlessly strolling in an air conditioned mall or even working out in an air conditioned gym for that matter robs us of the freedom and fresh air that spending time in the open offers. Why not make the most of these milder, relatively cooler months and walk the talk? n

with banana, cashews, chayote and fresh hearts of palm with an orange sesame vinaigrette snatched our hearts immediately. Some of our favourites include the Cumin Dusted Tuna and the Ginger & Papaya Marinated Palomilla steak with tatsoi, pickled vegetables and Thai chilli mojo. The creative blend of two distinctly different cultures was spectacular. What stood out from the rest was the restaurant’s live ceviches bar – you do not always get to experience a high-quality ceviche on the island. Aside from using fresh ingredients, it was also beautifully presented. Asia de Cuba is recognized for its selection of handcrafted cocktails and nonalcoholic cleansers – the Latino influence is truly awakened in their selection of signature sips. There is also a display of sweet indulgences for a sweet finish. Nevertheless, pretty much anything on the menu and the Chino Latino Brunch are worth trying.

The ambience was refreshing – we loved how much light there was in the restaurant. We savoured every moment in beautiful surroundings complimented by live Latin groove that made us want to move. The exceptional service also made such a huge difference. Open daily from 12 pm, Asia de Cuba Bahrain plays on the senses with its living tropical wall and Washingtonia palm trees, further complimented by decadent bronze life-size statues and Art Deco finishings. The Chino-Latino Brunch is available every Friday from 1 pm to 4 pm. It is priced at BD17.5++ with unlimited food and soft beverages as well as live ceviches, carving and dessert stations.

España
in Manama La Vinoteca Barcelona introduces a new taste of Spain in the heart of Adliya!
H
ome to authentic Spanish cuisine at Block 338, award-winning restaurant La Vinoteca Barcelona now boasts an entirely rejuvenated experience. This includes a reimagined venue and menus, solidifying its reputation as a little piece of ‘España’ in Manama. “We’ve been constantly incorporating feedback and improving on the experience we offer since we opened in 2014,” said James Johnston, the head of the restaurants division of BMMI Group, which owns the restaurant. “This new launch is the most comprehensive update we’ve had, with the aim of creating an even better all-round experience at the new La Vinoteca Barcelona. The new menus still feature some of our customer favourites but are now enhanced with some exciting new dishes from Chef Joan. The creation of this menu is about delivering authentic, excellent quality food but at prices that make us far more accessible.” The new revamp to Bahrain’s premier Spanish restaurant is about affordable luxury, with La Vinoteca Barcelona’s new menu being built on balance and choice. Foodies and beverage connoisseurs will find something to delight them, no matter what their budget or taste.
64 Bahrain Confidential January 2018
“Our new menu offers a diverse and flexible range of authentic Spanish tapas, mains, desserts and beverages to match your mood,” said the restaurant’s Spanish Executive Chef, Joan Gomez. Chef Joan has been passionate about good food from a young age. At 13, he was already assisting his father in the kitchen of a restaurant along Barcelona’s coast. Since then, he’s graduated from a prestigious catering school, trained in Michelin Star restaurants and worked all around the globe. “I’ve been inspired by my Spanish roots and the amazing quality of Bahraini ingredients and culture that we are able to infuse into our cuisine. Our kitchen is always buzzing, with our team experimenting until they perfect exciting flavours. I truly believe that when the festive energy of Spain meets the warm spirit of Bahrain, something incredible happens,” said Joan. The venue has also been refitted to reflect the warmth, elegance and intimate atmosphere that is perfect for a core element of both Spanish and Bahraini cultures – the joy of sharing good food. In a nod to the restaurant’s partnership with Bodegas Torres in Spain, the interior has
been tailored to resemble the staves of a wooden barrel. The colour palette of the restaurant is now deeper and the seating is designed to be more comfortable and intimate – perfect for a big group or for a memorable date night. While the restaurant has already built a solid reputation as Bahrain’s most authentic Spanish restaurant, even recently winning the 2017 Citi Fact award for Best Mediterranean restaurant in Bahrain, the new revamp and more accessible options ensure that is positioned as a spot to be regularly enjoyed. n
La Vinoteca Barcelona’s kitchen is open every day, from noon to midnight. The bar is open from noon to midnight, Saturday to Tuesday, and from noon to 2am from Wednesday to Friday. For reservations and inquires please call +973 1700 7808 or email hola@vinotecabcn.com.

The contestants will face a battle royale in which each will be given 45 minutes to produce an Italian Style dish, using a choice of ingredients provided by the restaurant. The table of ingredients will be only provided within a 5-minute timeframe where they must choose the produce they will work with, and prepare their workstations for the start of the challenge. Also, contestants will have the privilege of having two sous chefs; the executive chef will be on hand to provide any assistance during the competition. Based on the list of ingredients provided along with the joining instructions, each contestant will need to have an Italian dish completed within 45 minutes, ready for tasting and critiquing by the panel of judges. Dishes prepared cannot be any form of pizza and any dish that is on the restaurants' menu. No alcohol must be used in any dish and contestants have
to make two portions of the dish so that judges can sample them. The dishes will be scored on a scale of 1 (yuck) to 5 (we want more) based on taste and texture, presentation, authenticity and balance and portioning. The two winning contestants from each heat will then go on to the second stage on 4th February and 6th February where six contestants will face off again to eliminate four contestants from each heat. BOSSA NOVA A slice of Brazil in Bahrain
B
OSSA NOVA Restaurant & Lounge is a newly opened Brazilian Restaurant located at Block 338. It is the first authentic Brazilian restaurant in Bahrain. The restaurant features a good-sized seating area with high ceilings downstairs. Guests can also opt for the additional seating as well as a bar area and live DJ upstairs. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were welcomed by beautiful Portuguese hostesses who led us to our table. BOSSA NOVA is a rodizio style restaurant meaning you pay one price and eat as much as you want. The restaurant specialises in meats and throughout the whole course, the waitresses brought cuts of different types of meats on skewers which they sliced in front of us. We were also provided with tongs for us to hold the meat while they slice it which was a nice touch. There’s so much too choose from so we recommend you to only ask for a small portion and taste it before you commit yourself to
more. We found out that some cuts we enjoyed more than others. There’s also a buffet area and the food was very impressive and delicious. Various Brazilian dishes were also offered at BOSSA NOVA and one dish they served was black bean with longgrained rice with Brazilian vinaigrette and
breadcrumbs. We found out that when you add each ingredient, the taste got better and better. The buffet was very reasonably priced at just BD12. The place has a very pleasant ambience, with soft Brazilian music in the background. n Price: Brunch BD18++; Dinner BD12++ Time: 7:00pm-11:30pm, 7:00pm-2:00am
The waitresses brought cuts of different types of meats on skewers which they sliced in front of us.
Verdict: THE GOOD • Eat as much as you want • Great atmosphere • Drinks are reasonably priced THE BAD • At times, the music was too loud (upstairs) but when we mentioned this, they turned it down for us.
WOULD WE GO BACK? • Yes, we will!
