Roads, trees and buildings were beautifully decorated with hues of red and white. Landmark sites were also lit up to mark the occasion. Vaccines What is the Sinopharm vaccine? How does it compare to other alternatives?

V

accines to prevent the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are perhaps the best hope for ending the pandemic. Just recently, Bahrain has joined the front line of the global fight against the virus after announcing free vaccinations for citizens and residents. What do we know about the Sinopharm vaccine and how does it compare to other vaccines? What is the Sinopharm vaccine? Sinopharm Group (China National Pharmaceutical Group) is a state-owned

22 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

pharmaceutical company with two vaccine candidates. The vaccine they have created uses an inactive virus to trigger an immune response. It works by using deactivated viral particles to expose the body's immune system to the virus without risking a serious disease response. On 13th December, the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) has approved the registration of the Sinopharm vaccine. The NHRA approval for the vaccine is based on data from the trials carried out in several countries including Bahrain.

Feature

How is it given? The Sinopharm vaccine is administered through injection into a muscle. According to the Ministry of Health’s website, a second dose of vaccine is needed on the 21st day after the first vaccination. On Day 35, antibodies against the virus will start to develop in the vaccinated person. It is worth noting that citizens and residents in Bahrain above 18 years of age could register to receive the vaccine for free.

The vaccine they have created uses an inactive virus to trigger an immune response. What are the possible side effects of a COVID-19 vaccine? According to the Mayo Clinic, a COVID-19 vaccine can cause mild side effects, including: • Pain, redness or swelling where the shot was given • Fever • Fatigue • Headache • Muscle pain • Chills • Joint pain

Other vaccines According to WHO, there are currently more than 50 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in trials. Sinovac The Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company Sinovac is behind the CoronaVac, an inactivated vaccine. The approach deploys a dead version of the coronavirus to generate immunity. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Unlike most vaccines which are a modified virus or viral protein to elicit an immune response, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines use messenger RNA (mRNA) to instruct the body to begin defending itself against COVID-19. Once injected, the body's immune system makes antibodies. If a vaccinated person is later exposed to the coronavirus, those antibodies should attack the virus. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two doses. Vaccine storage Inactivated vaccines only need to be stored at standard refrigerator temperatures of 2˚C to 8˚C (36˚F to 46˚F). This means that this vaccine may also be useful to countries who are not able to store large amounts of vaccines at very low temperatures. Meanwhile, mRNA type vaccines have to be kept at very low temperatures until injected. The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at about minus-75 degrees Celsius while Moderna's vaccine can be kept at about minus-20 degrees Celsius. n

Wearing Masks Why you still need to wear a mask in Bahrain even when there’s a vaccine?

24 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

Feature

P

eople are sick of masks. We all get it. So when can we stop wearing them?

The answer is: not anytime soon. Bahrain recently launched a COVID-19 vaccination campaign free of charge for residents and citizens alike. While this development holds much promise, this does not mean that we can stop wearing masks anytime soon. There are still numerous reasons we still need to wear masks to maintain the remarkable strides that the government and frontline workers have made during the pandemic.

There are still numerous reasons we still need to wear masks to maintain the remarkable strides that the government and frontline workers have made during the pandemic. Reason 1: You won't know who has or hasn’t been vaccinated It would be impossible to ensure that each person you come across with is vaccinated. Some may have medical conditions that prevents them from being vaccinated, others may still be skeptical of getting the vaccine. Those who have been vaccinated may require a booster shot – therefore, you won’t know how well protected they are. Reason 2: We don’t know how long the vaccine can protect us Since the vaccines are rolling out quickly, there is no

data on long-term protection. It can take months to years to fully comprehend the effectiveness of the vaccine in the long run. Reason 3: We don’t know if the vaccine prevents a person from being a COVID-19 carrier Vaccine trials test whether or not a vaccine protects a participant from contracting a specific disease, in this case COVID-19. However, these trials do not look at whether a person could still be infectious after receiving a vaccine. Reason 4: People can be re-infected We know that It is possible for some people to be re-infected with the virus. So, if you have ever tested positive, there is a chance you could contract the virus again. And you could possibly infect other people. You should still take the necessary precautions while research is into how strong vaccines are and how long their protection lasts are still going on. Would you still need to wear a mask after getting the vaccine? Yes. Take for example, the Sinopharm vaccine will only cause the vaccinated person to create antibodies after 35 days. If a vaccinated person gets infected with COVID-19, his body’s immune system will start attacking the virus. Therefore, it is very important to prevent the virus from reaching your body in the first place. Wearing a mask and practicing social distancing does that. Only time will tell when can we eradicate the virus in Bahrain and the world. Until then, we need everyone to keep following the precautions we have been sharing since the pandemic started. Until then, we mask on. n

How important is it to get vaccinated against

COVID-19?

Why is getting vaccinated against COVID-19 important to the travel industry?

T

he latest developments about coronavirus vaccines have given everyone optimism in an otherwise dismal time. At the end of last year, hope returned to the world, including hope for restarting travel as countries began approving several vaccines. But what does this mean for the travel industry and how important is it to get vaccinated against the virus? Just recently, we spoke to Dadabhai Travel’s Director, Adnan Gilitwala to gain some insights on this matter. The damage caused by the spread of COVID-19 has been immense

26 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

Travel not just in the travel industry but also the global economy. Travel is crucial to everyone’s livelihoods around the world which is why it is imperative that people get vaccinated for the sake of both their personal and professional survival. “Scientifically, it has been proven countless times that vaccines are the most effective form of prevention against disease, therefore the urgency for more people to get vaccinated has never been higher. The only way we see the travel industry recovering and being able to help other industries do the same is when enough people around the world are declared safe to move around without restrictions”, Adnan said. However, the availability of vaccines is not enough to influence the demand for travel as people have to willingly get vaccinated

Scientifically, it has been proven countless times that vaccines are the most effective form of prevention against disease.

and show airlines, hotels, other companies, and governments around the world that they take their health seriously enough for conventional travel to resume to pre COVID-19 levels. “The goal is eradicating the virus and making it feasible for the world to open up again; as things stand, the only realistic way that will happen is if enough people become immune to COVID-19 through vaccination”, Adnan commented.

Don’t wait, vaccinate When asked about what travel agencies should aim for in the immediate present, Adnan answered that agencies need to focus on supporting the drive to vaccinate as many people as possible: “If agencies are able to collectively share the same mission of supporting the government’s efforts, they will make a huge difference in preventing further losses to the travel industry and all the other industries associated with it, and also play a significant role in making the world safer to explore”. With that said, Adnan shared that Dadabhai Travel is fully committed to doing their part in supporting Bahrain’s National

Vaccination Campaign, like any other campaigns of the government. The leading travel agency has heavily encouraged the members of their organization to register themselves and their families for the vaccination. “We believe that the success of any campaign is dependent on the alignment of both the public and private sectors, and continue to advocate the same whenever we can as no campaign would be initiated without considering the safety, efficacy, and benefit to the country and its people as a whole. We are confident that our government is acting in our best interests to prevent more harm to the people and the economy of Bahrain, and get us back on the path towards growth and sustainability. As such, we are all obligated to do our part for our country”, he commented. n Although the coronavirus vaccine is now available in Bahrain, a number of people are still concerned about getting jabbed. It is worth noting that all available COVID-19 vaccines in Bahrain are safe and have been authorized by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA).

28 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

Here are some important things you need to know: • All vaccines available in Bahrain (Pfizer and Sinopharm) have been shown to be highly effective at preventing COVID-19. • Two doses are needed for the Sinopharm and Pfizer vaccine. A second shot will be scheduled 21 days after your first shot. • Side effects may be experienced by some people after vaccination. This is a normal sign that your body is building protection. • Getting vaccinated will protect people around you, particularly people with higher risks of being infected. • COVID-19 vaccines are one of the many tools to help us stop this pandemic.

How can you get vaccinated in Bahrain? • You can register for vaccination through MOH’s website or your BeAware app. • The registration process allows you to select the health center at which you prefer to be vaccinated and the type of vaccine you wish to receive. • Once you have completed the registration process, you will be contacted to confirm the date and time of your vaccination appointment.

What do we know about the

New Covid Strain?

V

iruses constantly change through mutation and new variants of viruses are expected to occur over time. Just recently, a new variation of the coronavirus has arisen as the pandemic continued across the globe.

Over the past months, the UK has seen a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in Southeast England London. On December 14, authorities of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland reported to WHO that a new SARS-CoV-2 variant was identified through viral genomic sequencing. Initial analysis indicates that the variant may spread more readily between people. Investigations are ongoing to determine if this variant is associated with any changes in the severity of symptoms, antibody response or vaccine efficacy. Preliminary reports by the United Kingdom are that this variant is more transmissible than previous circulating viruses, with an estimated increase of between 40% and 70% in transmissibility

30 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

Feature Where did it come from? The most likely explanation is the variant has emerged in a patient with a weakened immune system that was unable to beat the virus. A similar variant that has emerged in South Africa shares some of the same mutations, but appears to be unrelated to this one. Several reports stated that the strain from South Africa appears to have mutated further than the new variant that has been discovered in the UK.

What is different about it? The variant found in the UK is defined by the presence of a range of 14 mutations resulting in amino acid changes and three deletions. According

Preliminary reports by the United Kingdom are that this variant is more transmissible than previous circulating viruses.

to WHO, some of these mutations may influence the transmissibility of the virus in humans.

Is the variant already circulating in Bahrain? No. To date, there has been no reports saying that it has.

What are the unknowns? • How widely the new variant has spread in the rest of the world • How the new variant differs from earlier variants • How the disease caused by this variant differs from the disease caused by other variants that are currently circulating

How do we reduce the risk of transmission? • Avoiding close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections • Frequent hand-washing, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment • People with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands) • Within healthcare facilities, enhance standard infection prevention and control practices in hospitals, especially in emergency departments • Wearing masks where appropriate and ensuring good ventilation. n

Translating Creativity Bahrain Confidential interviews Filipina artist, Kathrina Ragadi.

Art

C

an you tell us a bit about yourself? I am an enthusiastic self-taught artist with a degree in teaching from the Philippines. I joined many exhibits while in the Philippines until my arrival to Bahrain where I worked as an art teacher. In 2018, I have been given the opportunity to join an exhibit at the Bahrain Financial Harbour which kicked off my art career and led me to pursue my passion for art further. What does art mean to you? What drew you to pursue this craft? Art is a language of its own. It is a creation that speaks without words to many. Art is a way of how we bestow our deepest passions and expressed emotions, whether it is through music, dance or painting. It allows me the freedom to use my imagination while constructing and painting my pieces. From a young age, I have joined multiple art contests in my school. This is where I started to discover different art forms and methods which developed my love for art. Through this, I met several people including an art organizer who asked me to join exhibits in the Philippines. The rest, as they say, was history. How important is it for artists to “connect with their subjects? It is important for the artist to connect with their subject because the subject is the essence of the piece. The subject is the representation of an artist's imagination translated into the visual. If the artist is connected to their subject, it is easier to convey the message to the viewers and to connect with the audience.

Art is a never ending process which requires no rush to perfection.

Art

Can you tell us about your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? My artistic process is a combination different techniques and resources which I translate through creativity; I take inspiration by looking at the society and current events. I use different mediums such as acrylic, oil, clay, paper, yarn and other objects put together to produce an art piece. I take references and resources to make a study or plan on paper as a draft before using brush or putting materials on the canvas. Art is a never ending process which requires no rush to perfection. I know when my artwork is completed when I am satisfied with the end result. You have been based in Bahrain for a while. Is there a favourite artwork you’ve made during your stay here? What is it? It was a portrait of King Hamad exhibited at Bahrain Financial Harbour. The artwork was a trial and error process because it was my first time using yarn as a medium. With time and patience, I was happy with what I created. The artwork which consisted of around 30,000 pieces of hand made yarn balls assembled together, left me astonished with the results.

38 Bahrain Confidential January 2021

This art piece became one of my greatest artist achievements. The artwork was sold to Sheikh Rashid. What advice would you give to aspiring artists? Just continue pursuing your passion. Don't just think about making art without putting your soul into every piece you are doing. Furthermore, don't let others put you down for doing what you love. Keep learning new things and trying to accomplish all of your goals regardless of how difficult it will be. Use that knowledge to further your success in your passion. n
