Summer Tips
1
Take care with what you wear when outdoors When you are out and about exploring and not in the comfort of an air-conditioned environment, choose your clothes carefully. Our skin is the largest organ in the body and its job is to help the body regulate heat by controlling the amount of moisture lost from the top layer of skin. Contrary to what most people believe, wearing sleeveless tops and shorts which expose a greater amount of skin can lead to greater moisture loss in a very short period of time in extreme heat, leading to dehydration. Instead, choose loose comfortable clothing in lightweight and light colored fabrics to counter the effects of the heat. This will also show respect for local culture and customs, where wearing very skimpy clothes, particularly in public places can cause offence.
Tips
for surviving the summer heat in Bahrain
S
ummers in Bahrain are HOT! At the height of summer, temperatures are typically above 40° but there are many days when the temperature can hover around the 48° mark! Luckily, most places are air-conditioned, keeping us comfortably cool and hydrated. If you are in Bahrain during the summer heat, we have our top nine tips.
2
Drink plenty of water This may seem like rather obvious advice, but is often overlooked. Make sure to always carry water with you, even if for a short ride from your home or hotel to your destination. The best way to drink water is to sip a little water at regular intervals rather than gulping it all down. Bottled water is available everywhere. This is particularly important when you plan on going to the beach as many people cool off with a swim in the water and neglect to drink plenty of water at regular intervals. This can lead to mild illnesses such as a heat rash or sunburn or more serious problems such as heatstroke.
20 Bahrain Confidential July 2018
3
Head out early for outdoor activities If you plan on outdoor activity during the summer months, it is best to head out early in the morning before 7 a.m. so that you will get a good couple of hours of outdoor fun before the sun reaches its strongest. Make sure to wear sensible clothes and shoes and as mentioned before, carry plenty of water and hydrate at regular intervals.
Summer Tips
7
Use sunscreen Use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen with a mid-range SPF and follow reapplication instructions diligently to ensure that you remain protected from harmful UV rays which can cause skin irritation and rashes, wrinkles and fine lines and premature aging. Prolonged exposure to the harsh sun, especially from around 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on hot days may even lead to skin cancer so invest in a good sunscreen and carry it with you wherever you go.
4
Cool off in the water Have fun in swimming pools! What more is there to add on this?
5 6
Eat smaller meals more regularly There is a good reason why we feel less hungry during hot weather; this is our body’s natural way of regulating temperature. The heavier a meal, the more energy the body needs to expend to digest it, making us feel more lethargic. If you want to feel more energetic despite the scorching heat, eat fewer lighter meals at regular intervals. Cold soups, refreshing drinks, plenty of fresh veggies and fruits are all excellent summer foods and will give the body the nutrition it needs without draining its digestive resources.
Enjoy a tepid shower You might think this odd advice for a steamy day, but taking a lukewarm or tepid shower in hot weather is an effective way to regulate temperature. Cold showers will cause the body to produce more heat later on. If you’re feeling really flustered, run your hands under cold water for a few seconds with your palm turned up or a quick feel-cool fix. There is a major vein running through this part of the body and contact with cold water will immediately cause the blood to cool down.
8
Take advantage of airconditioned shopping malls A trip to the mall is a great way of keeping cool and comfortable in an air-conditioned environment.
9
Stay fit with indoor exercising There are plenty of excellent gyms in Bahrain, from small corner gyms to large world-wide establishments. During summer months, many gyms offer promotions and discounts to draw in more members so take advantage and workout in the comfort of an airconditioned gym.

Top Tips for Summer in Bahrain
Spending summer in Bahrain is like having free GYM membership. Who would not love to burn calories and sweat it out? Taking quick/long walk in the park will make you sweat more during summer. An instant sauna/ steam or threadmill. Make sure to do it early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Don't forget to hydrate yourself!
You can enjoy summer by doing retail therapy or shopping since indoor malls are just everywhere here in Bahrain!
Turn your morning coffee into iced latte to start a refreshing day!
Night swimming at the pool with a Barbecue grill party.
Taking a few days to declutter and space manage your home and office clears your energy allowing new positive things to show up. Not to mention it’s great as a prerequisite to feng shui.
Best way to spend summers in Bahrain is to have a house party with music, food and playing games which will keep you away from heat but the fun will not end.
Pamper yourself detoxing, bbq and swim days with loved ones, tying up loose ends, freestyle, take an Art course, learn a language with a private tutor, donate your time to charity doing hands on volunteering.
We asked our readers to suggest some ideas on getting the most out of spending summer in Bahrain. Here’s a few of their replies…
Choose a book you have been meaning to read, and READ IT!
Take the time to do something you always meant to do but never quite got around to it. Something which can make a difference in your personal environment
Each day decide to do just one thing that, if you do nothing else, will make the day satisfyingly worthwhile. If it’s a big project, break it down into smaller parts. Complete one part each day. Start as early in the day as possible, and don’t stop until you have achieved what you set out to do. At the end of the month you will realize you just lived the most awesome month in your life.
Practice your swimming technique, and get fit in the pool. Early in the morning is best.

As an architect I am fascinated by some old authentic and traditional courtyard houses in the old city of Muharraq. The old houses have a sense of simplicity, and awe-inspiring infinity. with their old-style building materials such as coral stones palm leaf trunks, carved wooden doors, and perforated gypsum panels. I see on these houses the authentic aspects of Bahrain’s Architectural heritage. n

Mrs. Sally Milnes, Head of Sixth Form, congratulated students on their achievements in the school and wished them well as they move on to the next stage of their educational journey. She said it was time for the students to take to the ‘open road’ and to look forward to new challenges. Head of School, Mrs. Julie Anne Gilbert, commended the students on their quiet confidence, strong work ethic and determination to make a difference. She commented, “At the British School of Bahrain, right from an early age, we encourage children to be themselves - to have confidence
in their own heritage, their own beliefs and their own opinions. I also hope that as alumni of the British School of Bahrain, these students remain grounded, remembering where they came from and proud of their own stories to date. This will instill in them a sense of confidence and courage. I am particularly proud of this cohort of students. They have been outstanding role models for the rest of the school.” His Excellency, Mr. Simon Martin, said it is a sign of the strong links between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom that so many students from Bahrain should choose a British style education. The United Kingdom looks forward to welcoming many of them to its shores for their further education. This year, the British School of Bahrain became part of the Inspired group of prestigious international schools. Dr. Stephen Spurr, Group Education Director, Mr. Rabih Saab, CEO for the Middle East and Africa and Ms. Leanne Emery, Group Marketing Director, were all present at the ceremony. Dr. Spurr commented that “at Inspired, we believe that the overall educational experience instills the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and values that students will carry with them for life. We are confident that this year’s BSB graduating class will start their next chapter with outstanding results, a love of learning, confidence and a firm value system that prepares them to become empowered global citizens.”. n

The idea is to open pathways in your brain with just a few sips. Having drunk this elixir as a college student in Mumbai, I missed it on returning to Bahrain. Thankfully, the Indian-inspired spiced tea, popularly referred to as karak chai in the Kingdom, helped satiate my cravings. Though karak chai has been around in Bahrain for decades, it became a mainstream beverage relatively recently. Following that, numerous karak chai shops opened up across the island and most recently, Mc Donalds has started serving it too! While this poor man’s Starbucks, which by the way is equally enjoyed by the well to do folk, may have offered salvation to many, one can’t deny that it has added to the existing menace of paper cup waste in the Kingdom. Sketch Credit: @noorsketches
BAH-BOMBAH Melissa Nazareth writes from her shores in Bombay to ours in Bahrain.
O
ne thing I’ve learned staying in Mumbai is that we Indian’s take our tea very seriously. So much so that there is a joke doing the rounds on Facebook about how we voted a chai wala (tea seller) as our Prime Minister! Mumbai is popular for its ‘cutting chai’; piping hot tea laced with spices and full cream milk, served in a shot glass.
Melissa Nazareth, Born in Bahrain, Melissa Nazareth lived on the island for three decades before moving to Bombay. Though miles away, she finds ways to connect to her first home. @melnazareth @melissanazareth

Aren’t paper cups recyclable, you ask? Well, a quick internet search reveals that the thin film of polyethylene plastic inside the cup, which makes it waterproof, isn’t recyclable, at least at conventional plants. It takes specialized centers, which are few and far between. Most single-use cups make their way to dumping grounds that are fast filling up. Moreover, one can’t deny the number of trees that are being cut down to manufacture them. So what’s the solution?
“Drink tea and be awake to what really matters.” Stop drinking tea! RELAX, I’m kidding. One way is to sell standardised travel mugs that customers can carry to the café for refills. While there are global giants offering this option, it’s not logistically ideal for small-time vendors for reasons that we will discuss some other time. Another genius solution that is yet to gain momentum in the Middle East is edible cups. Bahrain’s own Chai Café embraced this trend some years ago. Their karak chai served in a biscuit was priced at something up to 500 fils. While it is a bit much when compared to the regular karak chai served in paper cups, which is priced at a nominal 100 fils, we must understand that if edible cups become a norm and are consequently manufactured on a large scale then teashops will enjoy economies of scale and be able to price the product more competitively. An old Indian television commercial promoting tea, used the catchphrase ‘Jago re’, which contextually translated and interpreted means, ‘Drink tea and be awake to what really matters’. Our earth is dying and though we can’t avoid paper and plastic altogether, we can definitely minimize usage as much as possible. Let’s do our bit to save the only planet we can call home. But first, let’s have a chai! n

Packing the Perfect Suitcase Having spent most of my adult life living abroad, I've developed a number of very specialized skills...
Gulf Hotel hosts their staff Ghabga
Most of them are related to long distance travel, and one of them is packing a perfect suitcase. I have to admit I've learned the hard way - whether it be dragging a two-ton two-wheeled case through the cobbled streets of Venice in full summer, or carting around a case full of cool weather clothes when all I really needed was a bikini and a passport. So here are my top 5 tips for packing perfectly.
Start with the suitcase. There's nothing glamorous about toting around a tatty case, and buying budget is usually false economy so treat yourself to something decent. Delcey, Rimowa, Samsonite etc., preferably with a matchy-matchy cabin bag. 4 wheels trump 2, and hard cases trickier to break into than soft.
Plan your packing ahead of time. Download the weather app for your destination, analyze your itinerary and lay your chosen wardrobe (smalls, shoes and all) out to scrutinize carefully. Less is more here, so remove anything that you're considering "just in case".
Roll, don't fold. Your clothes that is. You'll fit more in, and they'll crease less.
Keep it simple. This means nothing in your case that you couldn't bare to lose, that'll break if thrown about (because your case WILL be thrown about), or is likely to leak and wreck havoc on your holiday wardrobe.
Don't check in any essentials. Keep your phone charger in your carry on, as well as lip balm, B.O. buster, a warm scarf that can double as a pillow and a good book. All of these make unexpected and lengthy delays in airport lounges just a teensy bit more tolerable. n

o they built Louvre museum in Abu Dhabi. The only thing we seem to be building in Bahrain, is shopping malls and more shopping malls. Although our new venture, The Avenues, is more for eating than shopping, the fact remains, that these two are evidently the most favourite pastimes here. Unless we count Friday brunch at Bushido, which involves another favourite activity. In vast quantities. For someone who comes from culture-filled Europe this is rather a grim prospect. So one weekend we jumped on the aeroplane and set off to see Louvre Abu Dhabi. Admittedly it is nothing like the original museum in Paris, but indeed this originality and makes it so attractive and unique. The brilliant architectural solution by Jean Nouvel, is very modern and absolutely perfect for the hot sunny climate. Lacy roof ornaments covering the vast dome cast a cool shadow offering plenty of breezy outside space to stroll, sit, or just simply wander around from one exhibition to another.
century Muslim Koran. How well we can coexist next to one another when we look at each other with open minds and open hearts. A very moving message indeed! Another thing I found absolutely fascinating, was how packed the whole place was. Locals and tourists, families and couples, solo wanderers and groups. Some strolling on their own, some with a museum guide. Parents explaining their fidgety offspring about this painting and that sculpture. Or taking their youngsters to the specially built Children’s museum, which offers more family focused exhibitions and numerous interactive workshops. And if they might seem not to be paying much attention, I know from my own childhood experience, it all sinks in eventually, laying a strong foundation for understanding and appreciation of art and for the general savoir-faire.
The only thing we seem to be building in Bahrain, is shopping malls and more shopping malls.
So it left me wondering, don’t we want that for the kids growing up in Bahrain. Why authorities, educational institutions and even private initiative are not striving to bring more culture and enlightenment, both for children and adults, into our sunny island. Or shall we remain forever meandering in the maze of chain restaurants. I, personally, would much rather choose a nice cappuccino in the museum cafe over a soulless Starbucks concoction without any hesitation! n
Permanent exhibition is full of treasures gathered from all over the world stretching through centursies of our civilisation. I was told that they could only acquire one example of each artist, period or genre. But it is enough to give viewers a full picture of how both decorative and applied-art developed through the centuries. How various cultures, countries and regions differed from each other in their perceptions of beauty and aesthetics. One display in particular touched me to the bottom of my heart. In the proud place stood a glass cabinet exhibiting, side by side, an early sixteenth century Christian Madonna and thirteenth

Places to go, people to see It’s that time of year again, for the fortunate ones amongst us anyway, when we get the opportunity for a vacation, holiday, summer break, or whatever you want to call it… Al Rashid Group hosts their Ramadan Ghabga at Crowne Plaza
As with all things in life, there are different strokes for different folks. Some see it as an opportunity to catch up on work around the house, for others lying on a beach for hours on end is a dream holiday and for the ones like me, it’s a chance to see something new. I can’t see the point in travelling to a foreign land, then never leaving the hotel. Swapping one set of walls for another, is not my idea of holiday heaven, but plenty do and are happy taking an occasional organised trip to some tourist hot-spots. I can’t help but feel they are missing a wonderful opportunity; the chance to meet people and experience their cultures. I can see the draw of a package deal; the one stop shop for your holiday destination. Come inside, sign on the dotted line and away you go; hassle free holiday in a box. For me, the draw of the DIY break is in the planning, the excitement of searching for the best places to see, then ignoring them because they are full of tourists. Of course, there will be some places that are a must to visit and will be crowded with people like you, that goes with the territory, but don’t let that be all you see. The secret of travelling to distant lands is to go where the locals go, eat where the locals eat; they know all the best places. Take the time to learn about the people and their country; you will be rewarded with a holiday to remember and isn’t that what it’s all about? n

hat motivates you to get up in the morning?
Getting up early is one of my favorite things – I am a morning person since my childhood. The quiet morning is the perfect time to start painting as it gives you a couple of hours of extra time for creativity and perfect light to see natural colours of the paints' pigments. Morning time is very good for reading and writing too... and it is healthy! Having a morning cup of tea with a friend is also a perfect start of the day!

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? It is difficult to choose one. I have paintings of different subjects, styles, media. As a perfectionist, I like more realistic detailed oil painting which show you real fine art. My seascapes and landscapes; they reflect beauty of nature and colour harmony.
What does art mean to you? I never thought about this question. Art is a spiritual harmony, beauty, admiration and the right proportions. It is a figurative reflection of reality, the main purpose of which is to familiarize the person with the beautiful. It is art that brings up in a person aesthetic qualities. That’s why it is very important to produce positive art. Art reflects the thoughts of a person, his feelings and his state of mind, his style and outlook in life. Art in its various manifestations is with me everywhere: at
Art But when it comes to my art, it is little bit different sometimes. I do not think about the art process, I just work and create; everything comes automatically easily and quickly or more difficult and time consuming from one painting to other. I can say that to get a good picture, we need experience, and this is a lot of hours of previous studies and work. How I know when my artwork is finished? I really do not know, but overdoing a painting always ruins any it, and at some point I just decide that this painting is good enough or even almost perfect and I stop to paint and put it onside for a few days, then I look on it with a fresh eye, add or change something minor if it is needed and then I sign it.
Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Bahrain is small, but different and beautiful. I like various parts of it: the amazing modern architecture in Manama and small old traditional houses in Muharraq. I like seashores with gorgeous seawater colour and boats as well as tiny beautiful gardens with palm trees, bougainvillea splashes and vegetables. There are a lot of places I want to paint there. n averinos.blogspot.com irina.averinos
home, in the kitchen, in the garden and even in my travels. Without art, my life would be boring and without a touch of beauty. The world is changing, new ideas are waiting, but art remains eternal and priceless.
Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? I can easily describe the artistic process to my students: organize ideas, plan how to carry them out, select materials, arrange the parts, use line-shape-form-colourvalue-texture-space and exhibit finished work after that.

Rolls-Royce Goodwood, England Charlie Cooksey visits the home of Rolls-Royce.
U
sually upon arrival to the UK, my pick up ride is a family member, a close friend, or a taxi. However, this time I was to be picked up from London Heathrow in a gleaming Rolls-Royce Phantom. After collecting my luggage and passing through arrivals, my smartly dressed chauffeur, Colin, was stood waiting for me. Colin has been with RollsRoyce since 2004 and is now their Head Chauffeur in Goodwood, and the main driver for their CEO. He has chauffeured world famous stars including Elton John, Usher, and members of the British Royal Family. Before climbing inside I took a few moments just to admire the exterior beauty and sheer size of this car. It’s a work of art more than just a car. This belief strengthened tenfold after a day which gave me an insight into the history of the brand and the level of work and detail that goes into every car.
56 Bahrain Confidential July 2018
I relaxed into the rich interior of the Rolls Royce and enjoyed the journey to Goodwood, the only place in the world where Rolls-Royce motor cars are created. Opened in 2003 and surrounded by green fields and trees, it originally employed 200 people and produced just one motor car a day. By 2014 the workforce had grown to 1,400 and the collection had expanded from the original Phantom to include the Ghost and Wraith, with more than 20 cars created a day. Today, Dawn has joined the Rolls-Royce collection and 1,700 designers, engineers and crafts people are employed here. Upon arrival we were offered fresh coffee, and then the tour began. Rolls-Royce encourages their customers to visit Goodwood to see for themselves how their car is designed and built – and to meet the people responsible.
Car Review We were shown to the room known as ‘The Study’ – the first place a customer is taken to. It looks and feels a bit like a traditional English study. Here a customer can relax with a specialist over coffee and discuss what they’re looking for. Alternatively they can seek advice and ideas from the specialist. I was told that it’s not rare for someone to come in wanting perhaps a Dawn, and to walk out instead ordering a Phantom (or vice versa)! Next we were taken to the ‘Atelier’, the design studio where there is an array of materials, leathers, woodwork, and add-ons that a customer can choose from. It demonstrated the beauty of building something that is so special from concept to completion. Everything here is unique or special. For example, the leather

is sourced from bulls reared on high-altitude plains in a region of Europe with a climate too cold for mosquitos to live in, thus minimizing the presence of insect bites and other blemishes within the leather. The bulls are all free-range, raised in comfortable and safe living conditions with no barbed wire used to confine the space, hence eliminating grazes and wounds on the Bull’s skin, resulting in flawless Grade-A leather. I witnessed cars being hand made at different stages in front of me. I wondered where in the world, and to who, each would be going to. After the tour I was given a Dawn to drive for the afternoon. The Dawn is the only convertible RR in their line up, and being a beautiful English summer day it was ideal.
So let me try to describe my driving experience… I guess I lost myself in pleasure driving this magnificent motor car. I was cocooned in luxury, relaxing in the world’s most comfortable sofa, with nothing but sky above me, and gliding through beautiful countryside. The engine provides 563bhp and 575lb ft at 1500rpm, making it Rolls Royce’s most powerful drophead ever. When I put pressure on the throttle the 2,560 kg Dawn would calmly and almost silently accelerate like a rocket. Add to this the perfect sound system engulfing me in my favorite music. It was sublime. Now try to imagine what I just described, and I bet you can’t. What you imagine will be nowhere near to appreciating what the experience felt like.

Car Review
Rolls says that the Dawn is the quietest drophead ever made. Its roof opens in 20 seconds and is a work of art in itself. I activated it both while driving at speeds below 50 kph, and standing outside while the Dawn was stationary, just so I could watch the process. Cruising through the English countryside and villages in the most exclusive convertible in the world on a perfect summer day was special and something to remember. I discovered driving a Rolls Royce convertible attracts a lot of attention - people were looking at me trying to work out if I were somebody famous. The day was wrapped up over a spot of lunch at ‘Farmer, Butcher, Chef’ restaurant on The Goodwood Estate. It’s a beautiful restaurant and I highly recommend it. Filled with excitement from the day I had numerous questions which were all answered over a delicious meal. Colin then chauffeured me in the Phantom to my home in Horsham where I was staying for a long weekend before returning to Bahrain, and back to reality. n @cooksey_uk After a great day driving the Rolls-Royce Dawn, I was chauffeured home in a Phantom where I was reunited with my dog, Ruffle (who I had not seen for six months!)

The Valleys of Kings and the Labourers‌ Dhanyasree M shares more about her history-filled travel to Egypt.
L
uxor valleys that preserve the luxurious history, was a 'Must Visit' destination for us in Egypt. These valleys are now under the governance of New Valley Governorate. We started our journey in the morning; very soon, the scenery started to change from the lush green foliage at the Nile banks to the glistening Theban hills.
The Valley of Kings The Valley of Kings that housed 63 tombs of Egyptian royalties of the New Kingdom blazed under the heat as we reached their gates. A tram took us to the tombs through the winding roads under the Theban hills. The tombs of the historical figures in Egyptian culture were laid to peace in those lands. We were to visit three tombs in the valley of Kings. Our first stop was the tomb of King Horemheb, who was the last King of the 18th dynasty. Paintings from the Egyptian mythology illustrated the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. We had to maintain silence inside the tombs in respect of the ones who slept there. The next tomb that we visited was that of Ramesses VI. The narrow entrance resembled the entrance inside the Pyramids. The decorative images were in a well-preserved state than King Horemheb’s tomb. History suggests that Ramesses VI enlarged the tomb of Ramesses V to make it his own.

Travel Finally, we reached the tomb of King Tutankhamen. The entry fee was more than the fee into other tombs. The tomb had an entrance corridor, staircase, antechamber and burial chamber. Even after being robbed twice and excavated, it retained the opulence and affluence of the boy King. We had a glimpse of the treasures that the tomb had once consisted at the Cairo museum. The mask of Tutankhamen, his gold bed, gold chambers etc. on display at the museum had boasted the majesty of its owner.
The Curse of Pharaohs When we came out of the tombs, our guide explained that many archaeologists and Egyptologists made this area as their haven. However, she warned that many didn’t because of the Pharaohs’ curse. Many of the tombs had been opened and robbed off treasures; the major being the tomb of King Tutankhamen! It seems many people who had aided in opening the tomb of King
miniature tombs resembling their masters. The tombs stood amidst the ruins of old houses and looked as anthills compared to the majestic Pyramids. The inside of the tombs were the replica of the tombs that at the Valley of Kings. The main difference was that workers' tombs were smaller in its area and had fewer paintings on its walls. Often, the leader of the workers used to get the master tombs. Untouched and unexplored in comparison to their masters' tombs, they were well-preserved for the coming generations. As I came out of one of the tombs, I had a strange sensation and felt a pungent aura of a workplace. "The dead won't actually leave us. They live amidst us in an unseen realm. When your mind is calm and receptable, you can actually feel them." Our guide mused.
"The dead won't actually leave us. They live amidst us in an unseen realm. When your mind is calm and receptable, you can actually feel them."
Tutankhamen, died of mysterious accidents. Likewise Carte, the principal leader for the excavation of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, faced many mysterious threats. A cobra that resembled the cobra on King Tutankhamen’s crown, hunted his pet parrot on the day that the tomb had opened. It is believed that King Tutankhamen’s tomb was guarded by the mythical Anubis. Jackals of the same breed as Anubis reappeared for the first time in thirty-five years during the explorations in the valley. They watched laundered in the valley at all time during the excavation. Yet the explorations continue...
The Valley of Workers The Valley of Workers was located nearby the Valley of Kings. We reached the area that had once housed the builders of the ancient history by afternoon. The place that would have echoed a generation was in peaceful slumber. The Pharaohs invited the artisans from faraway places for the construction of their tombs. They soon had own families and spent a lifetime during their work at Egypt. When the first arrivals passed away, their successors constructed
Colossi of Memnon Our last destination for the day was the Colossi of Memnon. The twin statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III made in quartzite sandstone stood majestically on a barren land. The name Memnon, means “Ruler of the Dawn". The hero of the Trojan War, and killed by Achilles, Memnon invoked his subjects even after his death. The statue used to howl in the early mornings and people considered it as the voice of Memnon's ghost. The sky was stretching into evening as we were leaving. The stars would soon glisten over the valley. But, there is no permanent sunset, right? n

Ask HV Holistic Health… How can I protect myself against the sun’s harmful UV rays, while still making sure I’m getting enough vitamin D?
It’s a good idea to use sun protection on your moles. Look out for changes in your skin, and have your moles “mapped”. Asymmetrical, dark coloured moles can be an indicator of skin cancer. Using a sunblock stick SPF50 will help protect them.
Sunscreen
Jemma Answers: It’s important to find a good balance when it comes to how much sun exposure you get. Conflicting information can leave you confused… should you cover your skin, or not?
Vitamin D & deficiency Vitamin D is produced by the skin in reaction to sunlight. It facilitates the absorption of Calcium, (without vitamin D, Calcium absorption is inefficient) which helps maintain healthy teeth and bones. It also helps with immunity from disease and can improve weight loss. Vitamin D also stimulates absorption of Phosphate and Magnesium Ions Despite the quantity of sunshine Bahrain gets, those living here are more at risk of vitamin D deficiency, due to typical clothing worn, and the reduced amount of time spent outdoors in comparison to cooler countries. Signs of deficiency include: tiredness, depression, aches, muscle pain, weak bones and stress fractures.
The negative effects of sun exposure Sun exposure is important to help the skin produce vitamin D. Exposing the arms and legs for short periods of time (with no sun screen) is ideal preferably around midday. Despite the sun being at its strongest point, you are most likely to top up your vitamin D stores at this time of day, in the least amount of time. However, excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer, premature skin aging/ wrinkles and sun damage. How easily the sun damages your skin depends on age, previous incidences of sunburn, skin pigmentation, light hair and eyes, freckles and moles.
64 Bahrain Confidential July 2018
Wearing sunscreen is important despite your skin type. Even if you don’t burn, your skin can still become sun damaged. The type and amount of sunscreen may vary depending on your exposure time, month and strength of the sun. If you’re in the sun for short periods of time an SPF15 may be sufficient. However, for longer periods of sun exposure I recommend using an SPF35 or above. If you sweat or plan to swim, a waterresistant sunscreen is imperative. Always protect your face by wearing sunscreen or make up with a minimum of SPF15, because this will help protect your face against premature ageing.
Choosing the right sunscreen Most sunscreens contain chemicals that either absorb and convert the suns rays to heat, or disperse the rays before they penetrate the skin. The skin is like a sponge and will absorb harmful ingredients, so be mindful to choose a sunscreen with natural ingredients, (no chemicals) that’s right for your skin type. We found many good brands in Live Well located in Bahrain Mall. Your choice of sunscreen and SPF should also depend on fair, medium or dark skin. Like everything, controlled sun exposure in moderation is good for you, just be careful not to burn! n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Jemma Lilburn Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544

Bar Bites B28 at Swiss Belhotel has an allnew Ladies Night with a revamped menu and Bahrain Confidential is all for it.
T
he B28 Bar is definitely one of the most in vogue places to down a drink. The dark and cozy plush interiors and that spectacular view of Bahrain’s beautifully lit skyline merely add to the ambiance. These are reasons enough to visit the bar with a couple of friends or even by yourself. But B28 raises the stakes with new and tempting offers. Ladies Nights on Wednesday features two complimentary drinks for the girls, Happy Hours are now Buy 1 get 1 from 4pm to 8pm every day and a Hoteliers Night where you get 50% off on all food and beverages upon showing your company ID. But the most exciting change we were looking forward to was the change in the menu. As much as we loved the previous menu, this new menu is crafted by the executive chef at the hotel, Holger Lang. He’s put together a series of perfectly sized bar bites that allow you to buzz your taste buds and not just your head. The spread consists of 12 items, all 12 of them perfect to keep the night going for a little longer. We know because we tried them all. We first started off with some incredible looking welcome drinks – Sangrias! The word just sings and so did we. As we were taking in the taste and the deep rich red of the Sangria, we got served our first platter. It was the Arabic Cold Mezza – the bread was hot and toasty and along with it we had a generous amount of Hummus, Moutabel, Tabouleh, and

Muhammara. To be honest, we didn’t require anything more; we were perfectly content with the quantity and definitely the flavors. But as the night progressed, we had a generous platter of Nachos, that was to die for. After which we had a small plate of Breaded Onion rings, Chicken Croquette, fish and chips and crispy Calamari rings and we can’t express to you how perfect they were. The batter was thin and crispy, and the insides were thoroughly cooked! Next, we moved on the Chef’s personal favorite, the Mediterranean Chicken Kebab and we could see why he recommended it, there was definitely a lot of love there. We also had steak fries and then to finish off we had a pulled CAB rib slider that had a slow-cooked Angus beef patty. This seems like a lot and we were properly stuffed but we couldn’t stop ourselves, it was hard just to imagine stopping. We are definitely going back. B28’s new menu gets a thumbs-up and a double tap from us. n
