M

r. Fares Yactine, is not new to the Gulf Hotel as he previously served the Hotel as Executive Assistant Manager, in charge of the Food & Beverage Department, as well as Health & Recreation. Just recently he has been appointed as General Manager for the legendary 5-star property.

How are you finding Bahrain? So far, so good (smiling).

What’s happening at the Gulf Hotel? Right now the Bahrain market for hotels is quite challenging. But I’m optimistic overall, and anyway the Gulf Hotel is in a very strong market position. We have new rooms and suites and an array of internationally acclaimed restaurants serving some of the best

Feature cuisine in the Kingdom, right in the center of Bahrain’s restaurant district of Adliya. Some of our outlets are undergoing major improvements or renovations. Our British styled pub Sherlock Homes is in the process of such a major renovation. There will be a new stage, private booths with individual screens for watching sports, and an air curtain for the benefit of all non smokers. When it re-opens it will be greatly improved while still maintaining its distinctive character.

Our popular and classic Italian restaurant La Pergola is also undoing renovation and on re-opening will be graced with the talents of multi-Michelin starred Italian chef, Giancarlo Perbellini. Fusions restaurant will take on a completely new look after a quarter million dinar refurbishment, will reopen with an outdoor terrace, and will be under the guidance of the Hotel's young, talented Bahraini chef, Tala Bashmi.

What is your opinion about the current state of the market? The market is changing aggressively. If we talk about four and five star hotels in Bahrain, we have seen the doubling of supply within just five years. We have also

seen a lot of new restaurants opening. Then of course there’s what is happening across the causeway. Visitors from Saudi Arabia come to Bahrain to enjoy, among other things, our openness, malls, cinemas etc. But thanks to the recent and ongoing historic cultural changes now underway many of these things are being catered for at home.

What about tourism and MICE (Meetings – Incentives –

It will be a unique selling point for both the hotel and for Bahrain as a leading and attractive MICE location. I believe the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority is working hard to bring new MICE business to Bahrain and there will likely be a couple of major

announcements on this in the near future that I can’t currently comment on. I believe that there will be big changes in tourism including long-requested public beaches. There are some opening in the Bahrain Bay area, some of which will be managed by hotels.

What is it you most love about Bahrain? It’s uniqueness. Bahrain is a country that almost seems like a village – it is a place where you can build strong, close friendships. I have lived and loved living in Bahrain, and being at the Gulf Hotel, so taking up my position here was like coming back home. n

hat brings you to Bahrain?

I’m here for the launch of ‘Mothercare Select’. By way of this platform, we open a world of amazing rewards exclusively for our top customers and acknowledge them for their continued patronage of the brand.

Mothercare was the first of its kind, but now the market is crowded with competing companies, some of which to a greater or lesser extent have attempted to mimic your concept. How can Mothercare best differentiate itself? Mothercare, Bahrain was established in 1973 and it is the first brand of the Landmark Group. We have a strong legacy of 45 years in the region as a home-grown brand catering to the second generation of mothers, who, in all probability, shopped with us as babies or toddlers with their moms. This, topped with our vast product range, wide variety, affordability and personalized service are the pivotal factors that differentiate us from competition.

What are the biggest challenges, and opportunities, facing Mothercare in 2018? The challenges would be a surge in online shopping, new malls & shopping complexes coming up leading to an increased GLA (Gross Leasable Area), heightened competition, the mounting pressure of regional macroeconomic factors, besides the introduction of VAT in Bahrain which would further affect the disposable income of the customers and control their purse strings. Nevertheless, we are very confident in our offering and its value proposition and are inclined to consider our challenges as opportunities to devise innovative strategies to connect with the customers.

Do your Middle East outlets in anyway differ compared to your stores in other countries? Before we enter any new market we conduct thorough research on the needs, tastes and preferences of the local consumers. Hence, our stores are tailored to meet the demands of the regional market whilst preserving the core brand identity. n

What do you consider to have been the biggest changes to the brand in recent years? Keeping pace and evolving with the ever-changing customer needs and expectations. Understanding the millennial mother better to enhance the overall shopping experience.

‘Mothercare Select’ is powered by Shukranthe loyalty initiative of Landmark Group. It is an offshoot of the customer-centric business philosophy of Mothercare that has been built over decades of service to develop meaningful & gratifying relationships with customers and further drive multifaceted engagement, more value and an enhanced shopping experience.

Car Review

BMW M5

Competition The new BMW M5 Competition brings together exceptional performance and a suitably rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use.

T

he market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The Engine The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business.

40 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

The 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton metres (553 lbft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm. The high-revving instincts of the eightcylinder engine are therefore harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time to 3.3 seconds. Furthermore, 0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) is

over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector.

Car Review

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced by a selection of other modelspecific design features.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory factor in the tremendous

agility of the high-performance sedan. Plus, a rear-wheel-drive-only setting (2WD) allows experienced and skilled drivers to revel in the experience offered by past generations of the BMW M5.

and “M5” boot lid badge – which gains “Competition” lettering – also come in high-gloss black.

Individually tuned chassis Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely dynamic driving situations. As well as lowering the vehicle by seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers.

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced by a selection of other model-specific design features. otun, the region’s leading paint manufacturer, invites everyone to immerse themselves into a wonderful world of colour, innocence and imagination with the launch of their latest colour collection for kids. Based on the theme ‘A World of Wonders,’ this collection explores boundless imagination and the unexplored fairy tales of children.

Backstory The new collection has been inspired

46 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

by the most inspiring artists, inventors, explorers and dreamers of our times: Children. Three magnificent themes derived from the vivid imagination, unique opinions, mature advice and favourite colours of kids. Sky Rainbow, The Three Little Colours, and Dinosaurs & Lollipops are the themes crafted by interpreting and translating children’s stories into a fresh and delightful collection to decorate their rooms in ways that are as limitless as their imagination. The colours of the latest Kids Collection are essentially created by kids and curated by Jotun.

Jotun launches a wonderful world of colour, innocence and imagination.

Feature the Rainbow World to meet the King and Queen. ‘You are the most special colours. You are clouds and when you live happily together, you create the rainbow in the sky’ said the Rainbow King.

The Three Little Colours This palette is made of wild reds, deep ocean blues and calming teals to fit little boys with a wild spirit and the softest heart. A story of three little colours; Red, Blue and Teal, who are the greatest of friends. Designed to keep it playful for boys, the Three Little Colours theme can be used to divide walls into light and dark tones, all of the same shade. A little boy with a fiery spirit, who is wild and chaotic but owns the softest of hearts, forms a palette of wild reds, calming teals and deep ocean blues.

Dinosaurs and Lollipops Frequently used for wooden surfaces Rana Khadra, Colour and Creative Manager, Jotun, Middle East, India and Africa, said: “At Jotun, we believe a colourful room can be so inspiring to a child. We discovered How children become the best storytellers once you fuel their imagination. For them yellow is not just a colour. It is daffodils dancing in an open field, a builder’s hat blown by the wind, a big flying school bus and the belly of a busy bee. Perhaps, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much you can learn from a child. We certainly were. We listened to children’s lovely stories which became the inspiration behind our 3 wonderful themes.” Behind all of the creative colours and stories, and making them come to life is Jotun’s Fenomastic Wonderwall. This innovative paint finish sustains its luxurious silky finish. While maintaining each of the imaginative colours vivid and accurate, this paint also offers superior washability and long-lasting appearance allowing kids to express their creativity and giving parents beautiful walls every day.

Each of the 3 themes of A World of Wonders is inspired by a true story of a child’s imagination:

Sky Rainbow The Sky Rainbow theme is comprised of

sky-powdered blues, serene lilac pinks and fluffy cotton greens, all of which synergise perfectly with dreams of little angles. The theme is a story of seven beautiful sky colours, who as brothers and sisters, all lived peacefully together. Although living in harmony, the sky colours always wanted to know their true identity and meaning behind their colour, so they travelled to

such as cupboards, chairs or shelves, the Dinosaurs and Lollipops collection pulls together a warm, wild and dreamy palette of purples, peaches and pinks. The theme takes inspiration from little girls who believe in magical lands, dream of dinosaurs and secretly wish they were the princess, to rule them all. n

Health & Wellness

Ask HV Holistic Health…

I’m confused about hydration. How much do I actually need to drink, and is it possible to have too much?

Andrea answers:

Dehydration is a common occurence, especially in the Middle East during the summer months! Not only is the heat a major problem for those spending time outdoors but, other factors, such as air conditioning and dust, contribute to dehydration, too. Avoiding dehydration is important for every single function of your body, and the consequences of long term dehydration, can be catastrophic.

What are the signs, and symptoms of dehydration? Water is an essential component for every organ, cell, and tissue within the body, it is also used within the blood to transport nutrients to the cells and remove waste from the body. Our bodies consist of more than 50% water, and a drop of only 2% can cause dehydration. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. The thirst reflex deteriorates as we age, so if you’re 50 or above, don’t rely on your thirst response as a gauge. Dehydration causes headaches, fatigue, brain fog, moodiness, disorientation and/or weakness. Don’t ever let yourself get to this point.

Andrea’s Top Tips • Keep a water bottle with you at all times. • Drink at regular intervals throughout the day, don’t guzzle it all at once. • Try infuse your water lemon, lime or other fruits to add flavour. • Use an app on your phone, to track the amount of water you drink. • Minimise caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks, especially on hot days. • Remember to drink water during or after a workout, to replenish water lost from sweat.

How much should I be drinking? Being dehydrated can slow your metabolism down by as much as 3% however, staying hydrated increases the body’s ability to burn fat. To be hydrated you should be drinking 0.033x body weight (kg) per day, for example if a person weighed 70kg they would need 2.3L (0.033x 70= 2.3L).

Over hydration can also become a problem, no more than 800-1000ml should be drunk per hour. Drinking too much water can lead to the level of salt in the blood dropping too low. A lack of salt can lead to nausea, muscle cramps or headaches, to help replenish the lost salt, try drinking a sports drink or a coconut water to help.

What type of water you should be drinking? Water is used as the primary cleansing agent to help flush out toxins from within the body. When drinking water, you should try and stick to quality, filtered, chlorinefree water to stay healthy. Water should be stored in either a glass or BPA free plastic bottle/container to avoid contamination from outside pollutants. n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Andrea Lister Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544

Bahrain Confidential tries out Al Areen Palace & Spa’s new cutting-edge treatments.

Pulsing Joy L ive Your life at Al Areen has always ensured a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere, with its general ambiance alongside the treatments it provides. From Hydrothermal gardens to packages like the Royal indulgence, the whole Spa and wellness center sings “unwind.” At first, the treatments had us a little anxious. More often than not, beauty is associated with pain – who doesn’t dread painful pricking for long periods of time during spa visits? Luckily, Live You Life wellness centre launched its new equipment that will redefine how you look at spa treatments. Just recently, we tried their painless and non-invasive treatments including HydraFacial and VelaShape.

HydraFacial HydraFacial is a non-invasive skin resurfacing and hydrating procedure

52 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

As someone who’s scared of facial scars brought by constant pricking, we would totally recommend this painless procedure. It’s relaxing and almost felt like having a face massage. It’s about not just improving the appearance of the skin, but truly restoring youthful, healthy skin. HydraFacial left our skin feeling dewy smooth and moisturized.

VelaShape VelaShape is a non-invasive body shaping treatment to reduce cellulite, as well as slim the area around the stomach, hips and thighs. The machine combines four different technologies to improve skin texture and reduce the overall volume of the treated area. Live your life has managed to elevate the VelaShape experience by combining its expertise with soothing facial treatments. The process goes on for 30 minutes on your stomach and slightly less on your face.

combining cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and moisturizing. The procedure uses suction like a vacuum to get rid of dead skin, clogged pores, and reveal more radiant new skin. It can treat a number of skin concerns, like brown spots, oily and congested skin and enlarged pores. At the same time, it also helps with fine lines and wrinkles.

Definitely recommended for people who underwent liposuction, although they may have to include lengthier sessions at a greater frequency. But the experience is rewarding and feels good, it’s like a massage and workout combined. The anxiety, in the beginning, was completely irrelevant at the end. One should definitely try this treatment. n

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Ashwin Shenoy and Omar Ahmed Al Khulaqi, the artists behind Bahrain’s up and coming EP album ‘O.A.K.’.

T

ell us more about the inception of O.A.K., how did it come about?

Ashwin: O.A.K is a collaborative project between me and my good friend and poet, Omar Ahmed Al Khulaqi. This project wouldn’t have happened without him. He contacted me towards the end of my studies and asked if I could “sing one of his poems”. “Just something acoustic, nothing too fancy” he said. Little did we both know this grew into quite a big project involving great musicians.

To listen to Ashwin’s music visit: www.ashwinxenai.com ashwinshenoy.bandcamp.com @ashwin_sm

54 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

Ashwin Shenoy

Ashwin Shenoy Ashwin is currently based in Boston, USA and has just graduated from Berklee College of Music with a dual degree in Music Production and Music Performance. However, he was born and raised in Bahrain where the place and the people there are still home to him.

“The strength of a tree is in how far its roots have ventured in the dark.” – O.A.K. Omar: Over the summer of 2016, Ashwin began showing me some basic renditions to some of my poems. I was blown away by the diversity in composition and emotion, and I saw a lot of potential for these songs to grow. At the time we weren’t talking about an EP, it was just something experimental for Ashwin, who usually writes his own lyrics for his own music.

Where did you draw the inspiration behind this album? Ashwin: Omar’s poems were truly the key to opening that creative door for me. His poems came in three series: Mystic, Romantic and Gothic, all with a strong spiritual undertone that really resonated with me. I read one of his poems called “The Inner Kiss” and it’s about self-realization, finding something so priceless within yourself

People & Culture that nothing in this world can compare. This started to reflect creatively in the music that was coming out of me. I really didn’t feel like I had a part in this process though, it felt more like I was a channel – I would read Omar’s words and then wait for that phrase or motif or rhythm that was hidden within the words to reveal itself in me and from there everything else fell into place.

“Omar’s poems were truly the key to opening that creative door for me.” were felt into this short 10-minute experience. Almost like a short film, the time just goes by fast when you’re listening to it.

What themes are you exploring? Omar: Indian culture, traditional Arabic music, the oud as well as the progressive rock and metal, all blend together to create this unique and interesting project, which represents special phases in both our lives and in the lives of everyone around us. Ashwin was intrigued by this new process of stepping outside his comfort zone and interpreting someone’s poetry into songs. For me personally I was impressed by how he gave my words a voice, one that is transcribed from his unique perspective. I saw my poems from a different angle, one that I’d never seen before. He never asked me about the meanings behind my poems though, instead he inscribed his own meanings to them, which is why this collaboration was such a rewarding experience; hearing how he relates to the words and in what direction he wanted to take them musically. I gave him full creative freedom to express himself and despite the EP having a general overarching concept or mood, each song stood out on its own, musically, thematically and emotionally. This is all thanks to Ashwin’s talent and creative expression.

Omar Ahmed

These songs represent a special phase in my life life that everyone if they are open to it, will go through. I tried to put that experience although, individually interpreted, I tried to put all the emotions that

Omar Ahmed Al Khulaqi Omar also known as the writer, OAK, is a young poet of terror and romance from Yemen, raised in Bahrain. He is highly influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and the poetry of the Romantic era. His recent works deal with subjects of spiritual enlightenment layered in surrealism. To read Omar’s writings visit: Beneath the Oak Tree @b.t.oaktree

The cover looks great – who designed this? Omar: When the songs were completed and shortlisted for the EP, I began working on the album’s artwork. Designing the EP booklet was a challenging yet beautiful process as well. I’ve been honoured to work with Ashwin on many levels, and I’m looking forward to part II of this project, which is currently in its preproduction stage for recording and release later this year. n

as an Escape Bahrain Confidential explored the mind of Zainab Ashoor, the young Bahraini artist behind Le Beau Arts.

Art

What motivates you to get up in the morning? When I wake up in the morning, the first thing that pops into my mind is my supporters on social media. I usually come up with most of my ideas when I’m trying to sleep, so I note down all the creative inspirations to have something to look forward to when I wake up. That leaves the rest of the day to capture it and share it with my audience, whose positive feedback always encourages me to keep on putting my soul into my work.

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I leave a piece of myself in everything I do, so each drawing has its own special place in my heart. Every single one has a specific mix of emotions behind it whether it be happiness, sadness, stress, frustration or any other. Although some of my works are influenced by my negative emotions, the outcome is usually something which leaves me satisfied and feeling better too. In other words, choosing between my pieces feels like a crime, like I’m choosing between my parents or friends.

What does art mean to you? To me, art is an escape. As I’ve also mentioned in my Instagram bio, I see art as this solace which I can run to whenever there's too many thoughts in my head, or too many feelings in my heart. Although not many can understand the thought process of executing each piece, I’m happy enough to touch the heart of just one person, amongst 7 billion. In the Middle East, I never found my style in art around me, so I figured it would be a good idea to introduce it to our region, and maybe inspire others. With that being said, to me art is comfort, adventure, and inspiration.

Art Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? What prompts me to start with my process is finding inspiration from any random thing around me while listening to music, and sometimes from other artists too. I then sort out all my thoughts and sketch a rough draft before diving right into it. Throughout the process, if I find anything is unsuitable, I alter it. Finally, I take a step back and decide whether I feel satisfied with what I’ve done. if I’m not, I go back and make a few changes until I feel like the work is complete.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I don't have a specific place but I always feel comfort and familiarity when I’m at my grandparents’ house and although I’ve lived my whole life here I feel like there's still a lot of places to visit and a lot yet to discover. n

To me art is comfort, adventure, and inspiration. Zainab Ashoor is a 16-year-old self-taught Bahraini artist who sees art as a form of escape. hen it comes to entertainment, kids these days are spoiled for choice. There are so many TV channels to watch as well as the internet to explore. Growing up, I, like most Bahrain-based kids at the time, had only Channel 55. How we waited for the cartoons that would air around 5pm each day. As an Indian kid, how I waited for that one Bollywood movie which was aired every Wednesday at 8pm; watching the movie while eating chicken tikka ordered from Charcoal Grill was a family tradition.

Melissa Nazareth, Born in Bahrain, Melissa Nazareth lived on the island for three decades before moving to Bombay. Though miles away, she finds ways to connect to her first home. @melnazareth @melissanazareth

60 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

I fondly remember the Ramadan programmes that were aired as well – Farjan Lawal (read the old neighbourhood) and Al Bait Al Oud (read the family house). Showcasing rich Bahraini culture woven intricately into a short play, these were entertaining and informative to say the least. Each day, a new local tradition would be highlighted. And the best part, there were subtitles so that non Arabic speakers could also enjoy them. Unfortunately, they stopped being aired eons ago. Today, Ramadan has, ironically, become all about food. Most TV channels air cookery shows and the buzz is usually about what to eat for Iftar. I love food and there’s nothing wrong in talking about it. But I also wish Ramadan in Bahrain would regain its lost charm. I wish there would be opportunities to learn about the local culture through a TV or web series.

While a few Ramadan traditions, like Gergaoun, have been highlighted by the mainstream media, there are many others that are less commonly known. For instance, the Mesaharaty who walks through the streets every morning, playing a drum and singing holy songs to wake people up for the final meal before the fast begins. If my memory serves me right, one of the yesteryear Ramadan TV series on Channel 55 had even aired an episode that beautifully captured the life of one such Mesaharaty. There are some traditions with origins in other (predominantly) Muslim countries like lighting the Fanous Ramadan (read ethnic lanterns) – according to legend, Caliph Al-Muizz Lideenillah was greeted by the Egyptian people, holding lanterns to celebrate his arrival at Cairo during the Holy Month; and the Indonesian ritual of Padusan where Muslims immerse themselves in water believed to be holy or bathe in holy wells or springs to cleanse themselves spiritually and physically prior to Ramadan. The Kingdom, being a melting pot of cultures, is home to Muslims from different parts of the world. It would be interesting to document the global cultural nuances of Ramadan. If you follow a unique family tradition that you’d like to share with Bahrain, I’d love to hear from you! After all, it’s these small details that encompass the true essence of the Holy Month.n

Flavours of the

Mediterranean Bahrain Confidential experiences a culinary adventure at Mawasim Restaurant and Lounge.

N

estled into the stylish hub of Galleria Mall, the newly-opened Mawasim Restaurant and Lounge is ready to welcome you with a mouthwatering dining experience. With a theme of ‘seasons’, the restaurant is a melting pot of contemporary interiors and tasteful elements.

72 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

Going Out beef marinated with aromatics, sliced onions, potato fries with mint yogurt sauce, topped with Oman chips left us wanting more! All of the dishes were fresh and remarkably delicious but Mawasim’s lamb chops are especially notable. ‘Porterhouse lamb chops’ covered with their homemade gremolata, au gratin potatoes, sautéed vegetables, served with Chef Ramzi’s signature sauce. Biting into the tender meat was a total treat; the crunchiness of the pistachios elevated the succulent lamb chops. Don’t forget to save room for dessert; one

Mawasim Restaurant and Lounge’s menu is designed by Chef Maher Ramzi whose vast culinary journey can be described as a mixture of the old and the new. From his humble beginnings in Europe to his travels across the Middle East, he has crafted a menu that highlights their seasoned cuisine – the best of both world’s as they say. As a result, it features fresh and palatable tastes of the Mediterranean that has been updated and modernized, resulting in fantastic flavours reminiscent of home. Chef Ramzi gladly informed us that a lot of thought has been put into crafting each plate, ensuring that each guest has the best culinary experience possible. True enough, all the dishes came in like elegant works of art, meticulously prepared and breathtakingly decadent.

Chef Ramzi says that a lot of care has been exerted into making each of his specialties. Even the herbs used in a variety of dips and garnish are organic and self grown. The attention to detail at Mawasim is very admirable. glance at the menu will have you drooling! We started our culinary journey with a new twist on our favourite classic hummus. Mawasim’s ‘Jalapeño Hummus’ is a take off on the traditional hummus; it’s wonderful combination of flavours left a little tingle on our tongues. Aside from the sumptuous salads and appetizers, guests can choose from poulet, pesca and carni. There are plenty of familiar dishes but each includes a novel surprise. We had the rich ‘Risotto de mare’, which is Arborio rice cooked with fresh mushrooms and chicken, topped with shavings of parmesan. The ‘Tikka Bahraini’ pizza featuring thinly sliced juicy

Guests have the choice to be seated in a non-smoking or smoking area where they can experience the best sheesha in town! estled in the stylish district of Adliya, Dar Zowayed is Bahrain’s newest addition to its vibrant culinary scene. With a plethora of Bahraini delicacies, the restaurant is offering a modern twist on the diverse cuisine in a contemporary setting.

Stylish, chic, aesthetically pleasing – three words that immediately came into mind as soon as we entered Dar Zowayed. The modern interiors featured inviting shades of royal blue and magenta, further enhanced with white brick panels and stunning cultural accents. Dar Zowayed features a lush outdoor seating as well as a cozy second floor. We were immediately drawn towards the picturesque scene of the restaurant along with the welcoming atmosphere fostered by our lovely host, Love. The gastronomic adventure commenced with the warm Harissa soup with traditional Arabic bread. This was followed by an array of scrumptious salads and appetizers including some of chef’s recommendations like ‘Chicken and Jarish’, ‘Hummus with Bahraini Tikka’ and our personal favourite, ‘Chicken Shawarma Nachos’. As soon as we thought we couldn’t sing more praises about Dar Zowayed, we were served with more mouthwatering dishes. The star of the night was the ‘Machboos Hamour’ which is Basmati rice cooked with local hamour fish and Bahraini spices. We instantly fell in love with the fusion of spices along with the perfectly cooked fish. The ‘Chicken Biryani’ as well as their signature ‘Lamb Ghouzi’ were also worth noting. Dar Zowayed also highlights their Bahraini-infused iced tea made purely from the finest organic products that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. One sip of the soothingly cold ‘Butterfly Pea & Spices’ concoction and we knew we’ve come to the right place. Aside from the remarkable dishes and drinks, a selection of freshly made desserts and cakes are also available. Dining at Dar Zowayed is certainly an experience to take advantage of so don’t miss it! n

A Joyous Celebration Gallery 21 boasts a wonderful Iftar celebration during this holy month of Ramadan, Bahrain Confidential tries it out.

B

reaking fast during Ramadan is not only a feast, but is also a special social occasion for all. Just recently, we witnessed Gallery 21 Restaurant transform into a joyous celebration of food and culture after sunset. Fancy a great meal with an irresistible price for Iftar? Look no further than Gallery 21.

76 Bahrain Confidential June 2018

Going Out dedicated for crepes and ice cream. What more could you possibly ask for? As always, we were impressed by the chic aesthetic of the place. It was a very lovely experience overall. If you are looking to go out with your family and friends for Iftar, Gallery 21 Restaurant truly makes your celebration one for the books. n

Arriving at Gallery 21 quite early for the Iftar, we decided to roam around the stylish hub. At the time of our visit, a pop-up boutique showcasing the stunning collection of local designers kept us in awe – we didn’t notice how fast time flew by. After a short while of admiring the wonderful pieces, we were informed that the Iftar was starting and were quickly escorted to our table. Moving on to the best part… the food! The Iftar buffet highlighted a Mediterranean feast with a mix of French, Italian, Spanish and Arabic dishes. Aside from the buffet of appetizers and desserts, included within the Iftar price is a separate menu for the main course. Guests will be able to choose from the Arabic Mixed Grill. Tagine Barkook, Hammour in Harra Sauce, Moroccan Couscous, Beef Haress and Lamb Okra with Fresh Coriander. During the night, we had the Arabic Mixed Grill; a scrumptious platter of traditional assortment of favourites like Kofta kebab, shish tawook, beef kebab complemented by a tahini sauce. The lamb chops were tender and beautifully grilled and who couldn’t resist the delicious shish tawook? This hearty dish is a must-try with its perfect blend of mouthwatering spices and seasonings. We also tried the Tagine Barkook, which is veal with a ginger onion sauce served with

caramelized dried prunes, fried almond and toasted sesame seeds. We loved the sweet and savoury combination between the prunes and the beef; the sauce had an incredible flavour as well! For those who are looking for something refreshing, the restaurant has a variety of thirst-quenching mocktails available. Our personal favourtie was the ‘Summer Bee’ mocktail, which is a mix of lychee, fresh rock melon, peach butterscotch, hibiscus and spice syrup. The ‘Ananas Cold Breeze’, a concoction of fresh pineapple chunks with fresh grapefruit juice, chamomile tea, fresh lemon juice and tamarind syrup was also a hit. The desserts weren’t less remarkable. Diners will be able to feast their eyes and tummies with various cakes, macarons and traditional sweets. On top of the delightful pastries, there is also a section
