Where to shoot your prenup photos?

Wedding Tips How to choose the right vendors? Your vendors are the experts who will bring your wedding vision to fruition - but with so many different options available, it can be difficult to know where to even start. • Set a ballpark budget in advance. This way, you won’t have to fall in love with a venue or vendors that are out of your price range or can’t accommodate your needs. • Determine if your personalities mesh well. Remember, you will be interacting with them on what will likely be one of the most important days of your life. Find someone who will be able to put you at ease, not stress you out even more. • Ask for referrals. Many vendors work closely together so you can also ask their recommendations. • Turn to other newlyweds you know. Their experiences are unique to their tastes but it can help get you on the right track. • View an entire wedding portfolio, not just their best selects. • Be attentive when signing a contract. Make sure you understand every point in the documents you sign. • Most importantly, hire people you genuinely like.

How to choose your photographer? •

• •

• •

Settle on a style. First, spend time pouring over any kind of imagery you love. Once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, try to narrow in one an aesthetic you like. Research on photographers who specialize in the style you want. Look beyond portfolio highlights – ask to see a complete wedding. You need to look for consistency rather than just four or five impressive photos. Consider the lighting at your venue. Use the engagement photo session as a trial run. Gauge your chemistry and make sure you mesh! Look for an honest, organized, friendly photographer, because that’s who will be spending the day by your side.

Where to buy a wedding dress in Bahrain?

How to choose the perfect wedding dress? • •

• • • •

As with most wedding decisions, it’s best to create a budget for your wedding outfit before anything else. The right dress takes time and research. Turn to the internet for inspiration to get a picture of how you want your dress to be. Once you’ve seen a few dresses online, make sure that you try them on in person. Find local boutiques with the same style and check if the silhouette suits you. Know the place and time of your wedding to help focus your search. You wouldn’t want to be uncomfortable during the day! Sit down in your dress. Think about the less glamorous aspects of your day to make sure your dress can cope. Take your time. Even if you think you’ve found “the one” within seconds of arriving at a boutique. If you have any reservations at all, keep looking. Be true to your style.

Capturing Moments Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Bahrain-based photographer, Nina Mommsen.

W

hat was your career path? How did you get from being an aspiring photographer to actually doing it full time, for

a living? I’ve always had a love for creativity since childhood; I tried and experienced a number of different creative art forms. For a time, I was an artist and enjoyed painting portraits on canvas. I wanted to be a fashion designer, however my first degree was in styling and make up art. During my first ever client photo shoot, I decided to take my model’s photo and show her how beautiful she was to boost her self-confidence. I discovered that I could bring out her best qualities through her portrait photo and she was so delighted with what she saw. She recommended me to her friends and that is how my career as a photographer began.

The couples that I work with are assured that they will have not only the best result but also a fantastic experience during the session.

I obtained my degree through New York Institute of Photography. Something which became apparent to me early on was that photography is not just theory and technical skill, it is also an art form. My first job as a stylist laid the foundation for my photography. I can create a new look for my clients from scratch and highlight their best features. What do you say is your stylistic approach to weddings? Before a wedding photo shoot, I always meet my clients to understand their requirements and how they would like to see themselves portrayed. When I see that they open to my suggestions and interest in trying out different directions, I offer a creative touch. The most important thing to me is to have the best outcome for my clients, so they have beautiful and

clients can receive their very beautiful and unique images that will last forever.

What can a couple expect when working with you? The couples that I work with are assured that they will have not only the best result but also a fantastic experience during the session. I work with all types of personalities and even the most introverted and apprehensive clients can expect to have a fun and productive shoot. They don’t need to worry about their posture or their best perspective, I guide them every step of the way.

What technology/equipment do you use to shoot weddings? My equipment consists of the highest end full frame Canon DSLR cameras and a wide selection of L-series lenses to capture the best shot no matter scene. Then for post-production workflow, I use a variety of software programs which includes Lightroom and Photoshop.

Can you share a little about what you aim to capture on pre-nuptial photo shoots and weddings? During their wedding photo shoot I always supervise the process to the last detail, ensuring that everything is going according to plan and the overall vision of my clients. I always plan ahead where and how I will capture their images, taking time to create very specific set-ups so my

What’s makes you unique? What makes me unique? Before the technical skill, before fancy technology and set ups – I am an artist. I enjoy the process thoroughly, from first meeting my client, taking their photos to perfecting them through post-production. Each client is unique and dear to me, and I make sure that the time they spend with me is memorable and enjoyable. Being a photographer isn’t really a profession, it’s a lifestyle. n

Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with established couture icon and designer, Rami Al Ali about all things bridal!

My designs bridge a gap between two contrasting worlds where East meets West.

H

aving launched his eponymous label in 2000, Rami Al Ali, is best known for dressing high-profile celebrities like Helen Mirren, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and more. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to the Dubai-based designer about all things fashion! An expert in craftsmanship, Rami Al Ali has made it his mission to deliver fashion-fuelled fantasies to women on their special day. The ethereal lineup details eight, standout gowns for Bridal 2020, accentuating his design signature of opulence, grandeur, and femininity. What do you think makes Rami Al Ali a distinctive successful brand in today’s overly crowded fashion world? My designs bridge a gap between two contrasting worlds where East meets West. I fuse the intricate craftsmanship synonymous with the East and merge them with contemporary designs favoured by the West. This beautiful hybrid is what sets the Rami Al Ali brand apart and what defines our DNA. We’re living in a world that’s embracing diversity more than ever before and it’s powerful. I think all women, no matter their background, are beautiful. Being able to bring these two worlds together with my designs is something really special. What were the inspirations for your latest bridal collection? The collection wasn’t inspired by one over arching theme but rather the ideology of what makes up the modern-day bride. For this collection, I wanted to speak to a new form of client. Before,

our bride was very classic – which is still true in some regard – however, we’ve recently noticed a shift when it comes to her wedding day. She now has a desire to look very modern. She doesn’t want something too edgy, which she’ll later regret; she wants something classic, but with a twist. So that’s what we created with this collection — modern but timeless. Describe the Rami Al Ali bride. The Rami Al Ali bride is someone that reflects modern-day elegance. She’s international and is both authentic and fearless. She is romantic, feminine, and boasts an unapologetic air of glamour about her.

Wedding When thinking of fashion that transcends, what immediately comes to mind. How do your own designs transcend fashion? Timeless style doesn’t have the constraints of trends. I don’t follow trends rather I design pieces that compliment female form. Women are my muses and accentuating their natural form is what elevates a design and frames beauty. I pay particular attention to the finer sartorial details and focus on quality craftsmanship to guide the direction of my designs. On a personal note, can you share something interesting about yourself with our readers that they probably wouldn't have guessed. Generally designers are perfectionist, and that’s true is some respect, however, I’m also impatient and have a tendency to rush things – a habit that I’m trying to overcome. Do you have any plans/news for your Bahrain clientele? We are actively working on lots of interesting collaborations targeting the Gulf market at the moment. Details of these collaborations will be out very soon. n www.ramialali.com @ramialaliofficial

Ferrari’s Electrifying New V8 Charlie Cooksey drives the first Ferrari F8 Tributo to arrive in Bahrain

T

he Ferrari F8 Tributo is the latest and greatest car to come from Ferrari – just recently, I had the chance to put it up to the test. As the name suggests, the new mid-rear-engined sports car is an homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. This F8 Tributo provides jaw dropping performance with the best 8-cylinder engine in the world, intense driving pleasure, unprecedented handling, and superior ride comfort. It replaces the 488 GTB and has been significantly improved to provide even better control and on-board comfort. Aggressive, stylish and sporty – three of the F8 Tributo’s characteristics which give it a strong personality of its own, something I really like. Personally, I far prefer the look of the F8 compared to the 812 Superfast and the Portofino. The F8 I was driving was red, which is the best colour for any Ferrari, it stands out in the crowd and attracts a lot of attention.

52 Bahrain Confidential March 2020

Feature The 3.9 litre twin turbo V8 engine, a visual work of art, is clearly on display. It produces a massive 710 horsepower, which is 49 hp more than the 488 GTB. Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 GTB thanks to the increase not just in power, but weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. When driving fast, the massive horsepower is skilfully controlled thanks to Ferrari technology so it doesn’t smash you in the back when you put your foot down. Rather, the car’s torque ramps up with every gear employed and thanks to masterful engineering and technology lets you throw it about like it’s a Golf GTI. It makes you think you’re a more skilled driver than you actually are.

Aggressive, stylish and sporty – three of the F8 Tributo’s characteristics which give it a strong personality of its own, something I really like.

And this Ferrari also behaves itself impeccably in the slow moving Manama rush hour traffic, pottering along at low speed in comfort and without fuss. The cockpit retains the classic, driver-oriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined cars. The luxuriously stitched leather seats hold you in secure comfort no matter how hard you drive this car. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel is beautifully designed, and the steering wheel, like all Ferrari’s steering wheels, have mounted controls, the prancing horse in the middle, and feels great to hold – and look at. The Ferrari F8 Tributo is expected to be on the roads later this year and is available only through Euro Motors, the sole authorized dealership of Ferrari in Bahrain. n For more information, call: Euro Motors, Tel. +973 17 750 750

Let Your Walls Speak Bahrain Confidential explores the mind behind Posters Bahrain, Abdulla Ahmed.

ell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to explore the industry of art, specifically posters? I’ve always been interested in interior designing. I enjoy creating a space of comfort. I believe that the environment with which we surround ourselves is very often a direct expression of our state of mind.

I came across this business idea when I was renovating my office. The office seemed so dull and I needed to bring it to life. I searched the country for the perfect canvas design but I came back empty handed. That’s when I thought “If you can’t find it, create it!” The process wasn’t as easy as I thought. I had to look for an artist to design a canvas of my all time favorite “The Godfather”. I was not just looking for a frame to fill the empty space on the wall, but rather I wanted something customized. I wanted a high quality canvas with specific measurements and a unique design. When I could not find a provider, I decided to do it myself. Ever since, this canvas has been quite the inspiration. That’s when I decided to turn my passion into business. I started small, designing canvas for offices and bedrooms. It was only a matter of few months when Posters Bahrain expanded beyond my expectations; it was not limited to Bahrain anymore. an you briefly introduce yourself to our readers and followers? I am Julien Royer, chef and owner of Odette restaurant in Singapore. Odette is a three-Michelin-starred restaurant serving French fine dining cuisine. Can you shed light on your collaboration with Mahonia? I have learned about the ‘Four Hands Dinners’ and ‘Kitchen Takeovers’ at Mahonia through my friends who are also acclaimed chefs; Mauro Collagreco of Mirazur and Bruno Oger of Villa Archange. Both of them have previously collaborated with the restaurant and have said some exceptional words during their experience. Coincidentally, the project manager has reached out to me regarding a collaboration and here I am. When doing a kitchen takeover, do you stay to your roots? How do you adapt? As a chef, sense of place of place is really important. You need to find the right balance between what you want to do as a chef

What is the dish that made you want to be a chef? It’s not a specific dish but like most chefs, I think what inspired me the most were my childhood memories. On the other note, is there a dish you personally don’t like cooking? There’s one ingredient that I still don’t like even after being in the Southeast Asia for 10 years – shrimp paste. How are you finding Bahrain? The people here are very welcoming and nice. I like the sense of vibrancy and soul that comes out from Bahrain. What advice would you give to all the aspiring chefs out there? Be curious. Question yourself. Taste, taste and taste again. What do you feel you could take away from working with Mahonia? Since I arrived here, I have tasted a lot of food and explored a lot of elements that I’ve never came across with before. Osteopathy

for Women’s Health Back on the Move shares everything you need to know about Osteopathy.

O

ftentimes, Osteopathy is overlooked as a treatment option for the many painful issues women endure. Adding to that, most people aren’t aware of the benefits of manual therapy for their overall wellbeing. Luckily, Back on the Move has always been dedicated to improving lives, especially women! Osteopathy can treat pain and dysfunction associated with conditions like endometriosis, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), polycystic ovarian syndrome (ovarian cysts), adhesions due to complications from ectopic pregnancies, and more! During pregnancy, your body undergoes tremendous change to accommodate a growing fetus. Osteopathy can also help women during their pregnancy by improving mobility, function, and decreasing pain and soreness during the 2nd and 3rd trimester. Did you know that an Osteopathic adjustment can also relieve the stress caused on the spine due to belly expansion? As your pregnancy progresses, the extra weight creates a shift in your body’s center of gravity. These factors can add stress to your body causing problems like back pain, sciatica, insomnia, shortness of breath, swelling, high blood pressure and fatigue.

Health

HV Holistic Health -

Sweat, Smile, SLEEP and repeat!!!

WHY do we sleep?

H

aving a regular 8 hours of sleep everyday has many benefits for us.

Most of us understand that sleep assists in recovery following exercise, which can be an added stress that we place on the body. During periods of both physical, and mental stress there will be an increase in cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone that fluctuates based on periods of stress, and relaxation throughout the day. When in a state of relaxation such as sleeping, the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated which reduces the amount of cortisol being produced. This in turn can leave you feeling more energised, and mentally refreshed for the day ahead. During this period the body is then able to carry out the essential daily repairs that are needed to help our tissue when replacing damaged cells, which is a daily occurrence. It also allows a reduction in inflammation that occurs as we stress the body. Whilst stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, the sympathetic system is given the opportunity to recover. Constant stimulation can result in a reduction of neurological messaging and, may leave you feeling sluggish and lacking in strength.

60 Bahrain Confidential March 2020

How can you enjoy the benefits of a better sleep: • Ensure your bedroom temperature is cool. • Stop using any form of technology at least 1 hour before going to bed. • As the days are getting lighter earlier, the use of black out blinds to maintain an environment where the eyes and brain associate to sleep time is essential. • Focus on relaxation before bed e.g. music, reading (TV is not ideal), meditate, focused breathing or, a long hot shower. Finding what works for you, will be trial and error. • Reduce caffeine or, stimulants intake from early evening. • Increase Melatonin if traveling and changing times zones to assist in effective sleep. • Increase daily activity, although ensure that you do not exercise to late into the evening. n For more ideas about how to sleep better, get in touch with Katie @hvholistic 1777 5544 or info@hvholistichealth.com

Royal Cuisine Bahrain Confidential takes a first look at Rivaaj’s new menu at Sofitel Bahrain!

S

ituated at the opulent Sofitel Bahrain, Rivaaj is not your ordinary kind of Indian restaurant. This bold addition to the hotel’s dining scene represents a new level of Indian cuisine with its style, service and new menu! Just recently, we had the chance to try it! Rivaaj is spearheaded by the epicurean Indian Chef, Javed Qureshi, from the well-known Qureshi lineage that have specialised and mastered the Hyderabadi and North Indian cuisines since generations. According to Chef Javed, the new menu is filled with unique specialty dishes. Being the food enthusiasts that we are, we were so thrilled to indulge into a scrumptious array amongst the sophisticated ambiance.

74 Bahrain Confidential March 2020

Going Out Guests can choose to be seated in the elegant indoor dining area or opt for an al fresco dining under the stars at the breathtaking terrace. We loved the seating arrangement – it is not monotonous but it ensures that people get their desired privacy. Moving on to our favourite part, the food! A look at the new menu gave us the impression that it is certainly fresh and innovative. We had Chef Javed’s recommendations including his secret recipe, Nahari al Subho which is made of lamb shanks and exotic spices. Since one of us have strict dietary requirements, we were impressed at how well the team catered to our needs.

The food is sumptuous; delicate flavours, succulent textures and aromatic spices combine together to make a rich variety of dishes.

The food is sumptuous; delicate flavours, succulent textures and aromatic spices combine together to make a rich variety of dishes. Old favourites like the Tikka Masala and Buttered Chicken were refashioned with new complementary twists. We also savoured the delicious vegan options from curry to biryani. The dishes were paired with specialty drinks that were no less than remarkable. The concoctions went together very well with each mouthful of the plates we had! Rivaaj elevates Bahrain’s appreciation of Indian fine dining to a new level. The service, food and ambiance were exquisite. A Feast for the Senses Bahrain Confidential embarks on a unique dining experience at CUT by Wolfgang Puck.

F

our Seasons' “Take Your Time” campaign was something we have heard so much about but had yet to experience. So when an opportunity arose to try a unique “Daily Discovery” at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, we were super excited. We came to CUT by Wolfgang Puck to indulge in the “Kitchen Dining Experience”, one of the hotel’s daily discoveries. The concept provides a rare glimpse of “the works”, bringing an added dimension and

immersive experience to both the visitors and the team. While the restaurant leans more towards a more formal fine dining, the kitchen’s atmosphere was very energetic, vibrant and unfussy. The same is true with its charismatic Executive Chef Brian Becher, who is passionate about his mission in redefining guest experiences into a new level. Our starter: fresh Italian burrata with apple, white grapes, cilantro gel and apple ponzu. The sauce had a subtle tang and sweetness that worked beautifully

Going Out

we had the Australian Wagyu tenderloin with fondant potato, caramelised shallots, truffle and aged beef jus. Our final dish was the "Chocolate & Yuzu" which was a creative plate of different textures and tastes. Throughout the meal, the dishes arrived in perfect succession. One thing they got absolutely right at CUT was the timing between courses. The setup added to the appeal and built excitement throughout the evening.

While the restaurant leans more towards a more formal fine dining, the kitchen’s atmosphere was very energetic, vibrant and unfussy. with the burrata, which was wonderfully light and beautifully presented. Then, we had the “De Cecco Riso Carnaroli” or saffron risotto with braised veal cheeks and micro green salad. The veal was deliciously tender and fell apart beautifully on our forks! Our next dish – ‘Pan Seared Loup de Mere’ with grilled leeks, sunchokes, cauliflower puree and kombu butter – was the star of an already brilliant show. The sea bass’ skin was crisp, the puree was suitably light and the leeks completed the mouthful perfectly. Next,

As we ate, we asked Chef Brian what makes the experience exciting for him as a chef. “It’s an opportunity to meet new people, connect with the guests and engage with my team. It is also a learning process as we come across new things with each experience”, he said. By now we hope that you’re getting the picture: interactive dining, fresh ingredients, vibrant flavours, and dishes cooked with élan by CUT by Wolfgang Puck's outstanding team. On the other hand, the service was faultless and the personalised experience was impeccable. The experience was definitely a feast for the senses – perhaps we’re biased because each visit at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has been remarkable, but this may possibly one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. With that, we’ve discovered that there’s no better way to “take your time” in Bahrain than to try a Kitchen Dining Experience at CUT! n Learn more about the Take Your Time initiative here: https://www.fourseasons.com/takeyourtime/ For reservations:

A Fusion of Flavours Bahrain Confidential reviews The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s Thai Lounge.

S

ituated at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Thai Lounge fuses a fantastic restaurant experience within a cosy lounge-like setting. Just recently, we had the chance to embark in a culinary adventure at the restaurant.

Spacious, aesthetic and charming, Thai Lounge was right in between the hotel’s pool and beach. To get to the lounge, we had a lovely walk through the hotel grounds – the journey itself adds to the ambience and makes for a great idea for a romantic date. Since the weather is perfect for al fresco dining, we opted for the cosy outdoor seating. Thai Lounge is known for its eclectic selection of Pan-Asian and Thai dishes along with refreshing concoctions and creative infusions that are designed and crafted by their ‘liquid chefs’. Of course, we had to try what makes the lounge special! During our visit, Chef de Cuisine Rerkden Paensurin briefed us about their specialty dishes (which was a nice touch) and soon after, we indulged in each one of them. At the lounge, traditional dishes like curries, satay along with Japanese sushi and tempura were presented in a modern way;

Our favourites included the Tom Yum, an intoxicating concoction of seafood and herbs; the Thai Green Curry in a rich coconut sauce; and the Hot Dragon Prawn tempura sushi roll. We’d love to comment on the desserts but we were too full at the end of the evening. So that’s for another review next time! The lounge featured live DJ entertainment throughout the night, giving everyone the opportunity to unwind while listening to chill-out tunes in a casual ambience. A Symphony of

Bahrain Confidential discovers the meaning of a true restaurant experience at Mahonia.

Going Out

The experience at Mahonia starts right at The Lounge. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by our lovely hostess, Ariada who talked us through the progression of the evening – the process was reminiscent of a prelude before the main act. Beautifully designed cocktails and gourmet bar bites soon delighted us while we admired priceless artworks adorning the walls. We must admit that the restaurant first won us over based on looks, and a wander over to their elegant dining area sealed the deal. We were then escorted from the restaurant to the lounge, where each table is named after a spice; ours being ‘wasabi’. Soon after, the symphony of flavours began. Devouring an overture of amuse bouches, we move through to the memorable ‘Ajo Blanco’ with capers, white grapes, marinated almonds, black garlic coulis as well as the slow-roasted beetroot with a smoked clam sauce and king crab cracker.

Our taste buds were constantly abuzz with excitement and anticipation for the next bite or surprise.

N

estled in the heart of Bahrain’s dining district Adliya, Mahonia ushers in a new era of fine dining with its gastronomic degustation menu concept – one that is unlike anything else in Bahrain and the region. Just recently, we had the chance to indulge in a gastronomic experience that stimulated our senses.

Then, exactly at the right time, the symphony’s fast movement shifted to a necessary down tempo with duglere style local seabass with a mushroom, daikon and lemon cream. The seabass’ lightness followed by the tang of lemon was a wonderful surprise before diving into the tender wagyu beef cheeks; which didn’t require a knife to cut and melted in our mouths. The dinner was artfully combined so that each course builds on the last, reaching a crescendo of flavours and textures that culminates into incredible desserts. The performance ended with artisanal chocolates, with flavours inspired from different spices. Of course, we had to try the wasabi-flavoured chocolate!

A short talk with interesting people living in Bahrain!

Nationality: Bahraini

Personality Profile How are you finding Bahrain? As a Bahraini born and raised here, my answer might be biased but l think a lot would agree. Bahrain is a country that’s rich in history, culture and religion diversity which definitely provides a great comfort to all those who are living in it whether Bahrainis or expats to be who they are and to live their best lives. What’s your favourite place in Bahrain and why? The Old Souq of Manama. It’s the perfect place to take a walk and simply enjoy all it has to offer from cultural and heritage sites to vibrant shops and traditional cafes. What do you most like, and dislike, about your work? I love coming up with new approaches and strategies to promote the different offerings each property has to offer while keeping a great focus on our guest’s needs and wants. Most employees of the hospitality industry would say they despise the long working hours.

90 Bahrain Confidential March 2020
