Fashion Forward Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Noof Al Shekar, the beauty and brains behind NS by Noof.

N

oof Al Shekar is a Bahraini handbag designer who has created her exquisite line NS by Noof in 2009. Combining her love for art, jewellery and fashion, Noof started designing little jewel bags for herself and loved ones whilst pursuing a career in architecture. This swiftly gained her a fan-base, eventually persuading her to devote full time to designing her own bespoke collection. When and how did you first realise that you wanted to pursue a career as a designer? I’ve always been fascinated with fine art and design but it wasn’t until 2009 that I’ve realised I wanted to become a designer. That year, my friend and I were brainstorming about opening a brand, with me as the designer and her as the marketing specialist.

32 Bahrain Confidential November 2019

Noof Al Shekar

Fashion

Tell us more about your collection, where did you draw the inspiration for your designs? The new season is mainly inspired by a different era, from the 20’s to the 50’s. Do you have a favourite from your designs? My personal favourite is Andalusia, the first one. I also love Laya which was designed based on the Golden Ratio. What do you think makes NS by Noof a distinctive successful brand in today’s overly crowded fashion world? NS by Noof is unique. At the end of the day, it’s for someone who’s comfortable to wear a piece with no tag name – to have something that they actually like or believe in.

What challenges have you faced while pursuing your career as a designer? The most difficult thing in this field is actually implementing your ideas into reality. When I’m designing, I have to be conscious and mindful in all aspects regarding the materials I use, how I produce the collection and what the end result would look like. Ideas don’t always translate into reality but it’s all a matter of trying again. Where are your handbags made? The bags are made in Lebanon while the leather is sourced from Spain, Italy, Paris, among others. I also try to support Bahraini craft as much as I can by utilizing locally made materials like gold, in my pieces. What inspires your designs? I get inspired by buildings – their architecture, style, iron work and more. The geometrical feature of my handbags draws largely from the Arabic culture.

Is there a particular designer you look up to? Zaha Hadid. What advice do you have for aspiring designers? Have patience and stick to what you believe in because it’s going to work out eventually. Also, you should embrace and appreciate competition. Is there a motto that you live by? The humbler you are, the more lifted you will be. If you could speak to yourself 10 years ago, what would you say? Don’t slow down and don’t stop believing in your brand. n @nsbynoof

Redefining Healthcare in Bahrain Bahrain Confidential interviews American Mission Hospital’s Corporate CEO, Dr. George Cheriyan. Dr. George Cheriyan

40 Bahrain Confidential November 2019

A

merican Mission Hospital has been providing healthcare for the people of Bahrain for over a hundred years in a non-profit setting. The ideals by which AMH was first established have remained unchanged in over a century of service. Just recently, we had the chance to speak to AMH’s Corporate CEO, Dr. George Cheriyan about the latest news and innovations concerning the hospital.

The new hospital will be unique in different ways. First, it is built to LEED Standards or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

How do you feel about the AMH Island Classic Charity Tournament being in its 22nd year? What makes this tournament unique? Everything that AMH accomplished has been about sustainability. When the Island Classic was first instituted 22 years ago, it revolved around raising funds to modernize the hospital. It is important to realize that the Island Classic is unique because it is an exclusive golf tournament held under the kind patronage of His Majesty the King, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, at his private golf course in Saffriya. It’s a win-win situation for both the players and the hospital – with the former, enjoying a memorable match at a unique golfing environment and the latter, gaining funds for charitable purposes as well as modernization.

What projects would benefit from this year’s Island Classic Tournament? Every year, a portion of the proceeds are set aside for our community outreach events; particularly for the elderly care homes, children with special needs and more. The funds that we’ve raised from the first five years of the tournament were utilized for the construction of the AMH 2000 building. Today, we continue to modernize the hospital through purchasing technologically advanced equipment and launching new specialist clinics. We’ve learned that you’ll be opening a new hospital in A’ali, can you tell us more about it? The groundwork for the first AMH hospital was laid in the year 1900. Exactly 120 years later, we are breaking ground to build a new hospital in A’ali. This is a multimillion project that keeps ‘health and wellness’ in its core. Therefore, there’s a lot of focus on preventative medicine and wellness. The new hospital will be unique in different ways. First, it is built to LEED Standards or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Everything about the hospital will be energy neutral, with solar power as its sole source of energy – a first in Bahrain. Secondly, it will be the most digitized hospital ever built in Bahrain. AMH is currently on its road to full digitization with our electronic healthcare records. We also have an app available on both iOS and Android. The multi-specialty hospital will be our fifth site, with over a hundred beds and more than 350 exclusive staff. Set in 20,000 sqm. of grounds, it will feature five floors, 460 car parks, helipad and 57,000 Sq mts of built up space. The hospital has two divisions: a

maternity and children’s wing and a multi-specialty wing. There will also be a special-needs children’s development assessment and treatment centre, as well as a training centre dedicated for medical and nursing students. When is the A’ali hospital opening? We’re hoping to open the new hospital by the middle of 2022. American Mission Hospital has always been considered as the leading healthcare provider in the island, how do plan to maintain its status in the coming years? AMH has been the pioneer of bringing modern healthcare to Bahrain. In spite of our legacy we still want to remain as the leader of redefining the Kingdom’s healthcare sector. This can only be achieved by continuing the strategic growth that we have achieved through opening a number of satellite clinics, where we can provide quality care to people closer to where they live. The future of healthcare all over the world is rapidly

42 Bahrain Confidential November 2019

What have been the challenges AMH has faced in terms of digitization? Preparing for the future of digitized healthcare has not been a major challenge for us. The real challenge is recruiting highly talented healthcare providers: physicians, nurses and paramedics. The bottom line is technology cannot replace humans. If we really want to transform healthcare in Bahrain, it will be done through talented professionals. Attracting these skilled professionals to work in Bahrain and retaining them, would certainly be the major challenge. How are you aiding this? AMH’s hiring practices, selection process and staff retention play a big role. We put a lot of effort into training our staff. At AMH, we train and enhance each one’s capabilities and competencies. I believe that if we look after our staff, they will look after our patients. Furthermore, AMH has always worked alongside the government to enhance its vision in healthcare, education and public service. We will continue to foster that well in the next hundred years. Apart from the new hospital in A’ali, what have been AMH’s major successes in the past year? We have opened a new and high quality accommodation complex – proving that we are continuing to invest not only in our customers but also in our people. The opening of our Riffa Clinic has also been a major success for us. n

Behind Rasoi by Vineet Bahrain Confidential interviews Michelinstarred Indian chef Vineet Bhatia.

K

nown as one of the most creative and accomplished chefs, Vineet Bhatia has built a strong reputation not only in Bahrain but also the world. In addition to running restaurant, Chef Vineet has written two cookbooks, “Rasoi: New Indian Kitchen” and “My Sweet Kitchen. Just recently, we had the chance to sit down with him for an interview at The Gulf Hotel’s Rasoi by Vineet. How many restaurants do you have? I have 12 restaurants located in London, Geneva, Mumbai, Mauritius, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi. How would you describe your ‘ethos’? Our ethos is quality produce cooked simply with a lot of passion and care. A lot of people “cook” but not with care, which is very mechanical. Our team is very ingrained to feel responsible for every dish that comes out; they ensure that the passion translates in each one. How would the diners notice that? By the taste and visuals.

Tell us more about the creative process that’s involved in coming up with new dishes. That must be a lot of pressure you’re under; to always surpass what you’ve already been doing. It’s not really a pressure, I think it becomes a part of your DNA. That is what your modus operandi becomes; that you are always trying to push the boundaries. Fortunately, I travel extensively and I learn a lot from it.

That is what your modus operandi becomes; that you are always trying to push the boundaries.

How would you describe the training process for your chefs? It is intense, very intense. A lot of hours are spent into training because this will be their foundation. If you don’t have a sound training given to your team, they will never grow. And because we revisit our restaurants frequently, it also motivates them to try something new. We empower our team to create something for themselves and the guests every once in a while. What challenges do you face in this particular Rasoi by Vineet? Fortunately, we haven’t had any issues in this outlet.

You get everything in Bahrain – from the produce to the spices. People were used to Indian food being inexpensive and you have brought Indian fine dining to a market that’s not used to it. What were the challenges you’ve faced? A lot of things have changed since the inception of my first restaurant. People are more receptive to trying out new things compared to 20 years ago. Acquiring the Michelin star in 2001 burst the bubble for us; we made history by being the first Indian restaurant to be awarded with a star. It was a slow grind but fortunately, people started to appreciate our progressive Indian cuisine. How do you benchmark your success? You don’t measure success. Do you enjoy your job? I love my job; I travel for almost 10 months of the year. I also love flying because I wanted to be a pilot when I was a kid. We’ve noticed that you have a tattoo. What does it mean? This is my family. I had both of my sons and wife’s name tattooed on my wrist. What’s the secret for a restaurant to be successful for more than seven years? Good quality, consistency and looking after the guests. n @chefvineet @rasoi_by_vineet_bahrain

People & Culture of pearl diving from the last generation of yesteryear divers. Traditional dhows set sail for an entire day, giving participants a first-hand experience of the hardships such as humidity and seasickness, and typical diving customs such as fidjeri – songs or chants sung to encourage divers who, back in the day, remained at sea for typically three to four months at a time. Khalid Ajln, one of the mentors, has been diving for over 40 years. Aboard his boat, anchored close to the shore near Muharraq bridge, he told me, “Bahrain harvests a rare variety of pearl, marshush, which has pink overtones and ranks higher than the premium jiwan (G1 – Grade 1) pearls.” Having learned the tricks of the trade from his grandfather, the captain of a ship, and father, a pearl diver, he believes it’s important to hand down this knowledge to the next generation. “If we don’t, it will be lost forever once we’re gone,” he said.

Harvesting a Legacy Marathon is a grass-roots initiative by Bahrain’s pearl diving fraternity to sustain this slowly disappearing heritage occupation by educating young divers, Melissa Nazareth finds out.

B

ahrain’s pearls have been the most sought after in the world since forever. Unfortunately, the local pearl industry suffered a setback with a shift to an oil-based economy in the early 1930s and the collapse of the global pearl market thanks to cheap Japanese knock offs. Hoping to revive the profession, Bahrain’s Directorate of Marine Resources issued a law in 2011, which permitted even amateurs to dive for pearls provided they use their own boats. It spurred on many locals such as Malallah, an office-goer by day and a pearl diver by dawn, to take up pearl harvesting. In 2018, the first edition of Marathon, a recurring event, offered aspirant divers and enthusiasts a platform to learn the nuances

Nasser Al Junaid also comes from a family of divers and has been in the trade for over 30 years. I met him at the fish market by the highway in Hidd, which also has a few concrete chalets, one of which belongs to Nasser. He dives a couple of times a week and, on a good day, catches up to three baskets full of oysters. “One basket may have pearls worth approximately a thousand dinars,” he said, carefully inspecting an oyster. It’s a tedious process, I discovered as I observed Nasser and his team systematically going through the catch, but worth it, considering the prize.

There have been several other initiatives; in 2012, the Bahrain Pearling Trail was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and has since been heavily promoted. In 2017, Bahrain started organised diving tours and expeditions. 2019 witnessed the second edition of Nasser bin Hamad Maritime Heritage Season, which featured Al Hair, a contest to extract oysters in the traditional way. We were blown away by the abundance of everything – we could have made an extravagant meal out of the starters alone.

Tapas Bar & Restaurant is the perfect place for the ultimate dining experience.

P

erched on the coast of Bahrain, Tapas is a stylish bar and restaurant that represents a unique gastronomic voyage to Brazil. Just recently, we had the chance to sample the restaurant’s new menu created by their new Brazilian Executive Sous Chef, Chef Eduardo Bronte. From the moment we arrived, we discovered that Tapas was not an ordinary restaurant. With floor-toceiling windows that boast an uninterrupted view of the magnificent sea, there’s a unique vibe you won’t find at many restaurants and lounges in Bahrain. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff who led us to our table.

We started with the ‘Ilha Grande’, a plate of mixed seafood as well as the delightful ‘Tacos Deluxe’! With our plates laden with food, we still managed to work our way through the mains. We were so impressed with the quality of meats that we went back for a second round. Our favourite was the perfectly cooked rump or ‘Beef Picanha’ as well as the BBQ plate, known as ‘Plato de Carne’. If you’ve paced yourself properly, you’ll want to taste some of Tapas’ heavenly desserts. Our visit to Tapas Bar & Restaurant has been so enjoyable, on so many levels, that we can honestly say it is one of the best ones we’ve ever visited. Above all, our favourite part were being able to engage with the skilled chef and staff in serving our food, enabling us to learn more about the vibrant cuisine. Tapas Bar & Restaurant is the perfect place for the ultimate dining experience, whether you’re looking for a fiesta with the family or enjoying a romantic night out. Do yourself a favour, and visit Sofitel Bahrain. Go hungry, eat slowly and enjoy – we guarantee you’ll be back! n For more information: +973 3888 5789

unch breaks have become an increasingly precious respite for us and more often than not, an incredible lunch can put a smile on our faces for the rest of the day. Whether in a meeting or on a relaxing lunch break, delight in a tasty Mediterranean Business lunch amidst the busy Seef district. Brasserie Royale at Jumeirah Royal Saray, offers a 3-course menu with delicious options to choose from. Highlighting two options, the Business Lunch menu

We tried both the North and South Italian menu during our visit and the dishes were nothing short of fantastic. Our favourites from the North menu include the ‘Deep Fried Buffalo Mozzarella Salad’, and both of the mains. The ‘Homemade Ricotta & Spinach Ravioli’ with butter emulsion, sage and parmesan cheese took us away with every delicious bite! From the South, we loved the ‘Sicilian Style Pappardelle Pasta’; but the star of the afternoon was the refreshingly light and perfectly seasoned ‘Grilled Prawns & Mediterranean Salad’! The dessert options for both menus include ‘Mango & Strawberry ‘Nice Cream’, Seasonal Fruit Platter or your choice of pastry from the counter. The homemade ‘nice cream’ was a pleasant surprise and a sweet ending for a satisfying culinary experience. We indulged in the dishes course after course without hesitation, while admiring the beguiling ambiance of Brasserie Royale. Overall, the food was delicious in flavour as it is delightful in presentation. The lunch is priced at BD15 net per person and is available every Sunday to Thursday, from 12 noon to 3:00 pm. The buffet was plentifully stocked and seemed to cover all the international favourites that we would expect. What we liked about the brunch was that you can move from one bountiful spread to another easily because of its space. The interactive chef-to-diner experience from the live cooking stations is definitely noteworthy as well!

F

ridays just got a whole lot sweeter with Baharat Restaurant’s brunch! Situated at Le Meridien City Centre Bahrain, Baharat offers one of the best brunches on the island. Just recently, we visited the restaurant to check if their brunch was as good as we’ve heard… ‘The Sweetest Brunch’ at Baharat Restaurant offers a unique voyage of culinary discovery with a range of international dishes, fine local fayre and a mouthwatering spread of desserts. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by warm faces who led us to our table. While admiring the lively ambiance of the place, our eyes feasted on the food stations as we passed by each one of them. We were sold the moment our eyes met the eclectic array of desserts, 130 kinds of sweets to be exact.

We worked our way around the exquisite starters, mains and desserts. The breadth of food choices was impressive and the quality of the dishes, especially the desserts, was extraordinary. The staff were very attentive and our glasses were consistently filled up during the afternoon. Meanwhile, the music from the live band kept us in an energetic mood for the rest of the course. Overall, Baharat Restaurant surpassed all of our expectations. It’s the place to visit to recharge from the hustle and bustle that usually surrounds the city.
