Unconventional Takes

J

ust recently, we had the chance to share a conversation with Kevin Brent Sanderson, an established fashion photographer in the Philippines who is now making a mark in Bahrain. Kevin is known for his unconventional yet classy fashion portraiture. In this interview, we talked about the roots of his bold, intriguing photographic vision as well as an exciting project he’s about to launch.

Can you tell us about yourself and how you got started in photography? Hi! I’m Kevin Brent, a Filipino photographer now based in Bahrain. I fell in love with photography during one of my classes back in college; I instantly had a gut feeling that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I then transferred courses and enrolled in an art school that taught photography. Among all the genres, fashion was what interested me the most so I dove into the school’s library and buried myself in all the boos about it I can find. How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it? Honest, gritty, and classy. These are the most used words when people describe my photos.

Getting know the market and how it worked was vital in knowing how to approach clients and people in general.

What are the biggest challenges of working in Bahrain? Understanding the culture is definitely the first hurdle I had to overcome. Getting know the market and how it worked was vital in knowing how to approach clients and people in general. What is your creative process like, do you have any notable routines? When I shoot for myself on my own time, I try to create a comfortable atmosphere for me and the model. Music is also an important tool as well; I have different playlists for different moods and scenarios I want to achieve. When it comes to clients, I put time in doing a great deal of research on them and the look they’re trying to achieve.

Find a community that can build you up and also learn from.

Of all the images you’ve made so far in your career, which one is your favorite and why? This is a hard question! I honestly can’t decide on a favorite photo of all time so I’ll choose a photo that meant a lot to me lately. This photo was from a shoot for one of my first clients here in Bahrain. What advice do you have for the next generation of photographers? Research and practice! Strong foundations come a long way. Hone your craft and look for as much constructive criticism as possible. Find a community that can build you up and also learn from. Any exciting projects that you would like to share? I and my partners, Joan and Yohan launched a studio called “1910 Studios” in Gardens Plaza, Jannusan. We’re having our official opening on the 19th of October. It’s been an exciting process and we’re happy to finally have the ribbon cut on our business. n Explore more of Kevin’s work here: instagram.com/kevinbrentt behance.net/kevinbrent

Upscale Living Bahrain Confidential interviews Tamer Farouk, General Manager of Hilton Bahrain an upscale hotel and residences that will be opening soon!

T

ell us a bit about yourself. What drew you to working for the hospitality industry? In a gist? My name is Tamer Farouk. I have the honor of being appointed as the General Manager of Hilton Bahrain and I am in love with hospitality. Even from my earlier years, apart from my passion for business, I have already been intrigued with culture and people. I knew the world is much bigger than what it appeared and I was determined to know and experience what the world has to offer. For me, hospitality is the ticket to achieving that. As a student,

14 Bahrain Confidential November 2021

I worked in several local restaurants—in service and kitchen. This was my first step to the hospitality industry. At the age of 20, I had the opportunity to join one of the leading hospitality companies in the world, Hilton, and the rest, as they say, is history. I started in Front Office and worked my way to where I am now, leading Bahrain’s newest Hilton property. I also love hospitality because of its challenging nature, its fast paced environment and the satisfaction you get after a job done right. That feeling of being responsible for someone’s successful celebration, vacation or even the daily needs of long-stay guests—

Feature

Tamer Farouk

the happy faces are what makes me go to work excited, inspired and grateful every day for being in hospitality. It’s truly rewarding. What are your thoughts on the current state of the region’s hospitality market? Any key predictions for changes you expect? I am very hopeful. The way Bahrain handled the pandemic is truly impressive, the government is instrumental to how fast the hospitality industry is getting back on its feet. Together with our neighbouring countries in the GCC, I’m very sure that we’d only see improvement and further flourishing in the industry. I also believe that the experience we had with the pandemic has just made us stronger in hospitality. We have adapted and found ways to protect our guest from the pandemic while delivering the same quality of service you would expect from a Hilton.

I also love hospitality because of its challenging nature, its fast paced environment and the satisfaction you get after a job done right. A great example is Hilton’s CleanStay program. It builds on our already rigorous cleaning standards to provide complete peace of mind when our guests stay with any of Hilton’s 18 brands. Together with the efficient management from the government, I’m sure Bahrain and the entire region are looking at a bright promising future.

Bahrain’s hospitality industry is very competitive – what do you think sets Hilton Bahrain apart? We commit to upscale living. Hilton Bahrain is a modern, full-service hotel and residences. We offer families, long stay guests and business travellers a contemporary home with all the perks of staying in a hotel. It’s also an escape for residents looking for a getaway within the country. Our facilities, Wellness Centre and nine meetings rooms are perfect to meet any business or personal need. We also pride ourselves with 6 distinct restaurant and lounges that will not just satisfy but “wow” our guests. The themes and cuisines we have prepared will definitely set us apart from the already fabulous array of dining hubs in the area. What are your main target markets? We are located along Al Fateh Highway, making our property a very convenient destination to weekend travellers from Saudi Arabia, long stay guests, business travellers and everyone looking for a great time. Whether they’re staying in, dining in one of 6 amazing restaurants and lounges or relaxing at our Wellness Centre, Hilton Bahrain guarantees a quality and unforgettable experience. What should guests look forward to at Hilton Bahrain? Any exciting news? We are opening on the first quarter of 2022. We have a lot exciting stuff prepared for all of you— from spacious and fully furnished studio, one and two bedroom apartments to unforgettable dining experiences, spa moments and perfectly executed events in one of our 9 meeting spaces. Watch out for the newest Hilton in town! Follow us in our socials to stay updated with our latest happenings. n

Vedge Café

Mana Café

Do you have a sense of humor? Do you like yummy food? Then don’t look any further than Vedge in District 1 mall. This spot has raised a lot of eyebrows in Bahrain for its hilarious marketing and seriously amazing food that works for the average person that follows any lifestyle. It’s a flexitarian spot that offers mostly vegan bowls and their one-of-a-kind in-house protein called seitan (not Satan) turned heads. It’s flavored in many ways such as shawarma style, yakitori style, or even Bahraini tikka style. Vegans and non-vegans alike can enjoy their dining area to host study groups, play board games, or join one of their events that they host every other month such as the stand-up comedy show accompanied by their iconic mural featuring Pikachu holding a Bahrain flag and Godzilla in a scene of all things random.

Mana Café, Bahrain’s first superfood café, is situated in Moda Mall at Gate 9. As soon as you enter, you will feel as if you were in a woodland fairy’s living room. The music is soft and subtle, the tables are tree trunks, and the seating is all small and compact, so that you can get up close and personal with all their mystical smoothie bowls, nourish bowls, salads, and tonic potions. They have keto options and suit almost all dietary restrictions with their high-end clean components.

They’ve also won a Bahrain Food Excellence Award 2021, and kudos to that, making them a must-visit spot for anybody that loves a good helping of tasty plants.

28 Bahrain Confidential November 2021

The menu features some funky ingredient names, that are meant for healing and traditionally used in ancient medicine, namely Ayurveda. Ever heard of ashwaganda, spirulina or shilajit? Neither did we until we tried out their food, which is decadent and nourishing, such as their truffle mushroom pasta or the famous Roberto rocket smoothie bowl.

Feature

Pamchal This District 1 spot redefines elegance with their sumptuous creations. They have edible chess boards, edible roses, and a variety of gourmet chocolates, cheeses and cakes that you can purchase in sets or catering for big events. Pamchal is also available at Bahrain Duty Free, and it is a stand-out spot for us for their creativity and presentation. When you stop by, grab yourself a flower corsage and revel in the fact that you’re literally eating chocolate masterpieces.

Anais Café Hala Plaza is home to Anais, a comfortable and welcoming spot with a huge menu of comforting dishes to choose from. Their most eye-catching item is their colorful raw vegan cakes. These creamy clean-cut slices have a rich taste and are bursting with flavor, resembling cheesecake but made exclusively with nuts and fruits. It’s a perfect place for relaxed gatherings, catching up over coffee or sitting on your own to read your favorite book. Try Anais for a distraction-free afternoon and get your fill of what it’s like to be a whole foods plant-based vegan.

Honorable Mentions Here are some places with some bangers for vegan options, even though they’re not completely vegan restaurants. Perfect for groups with different dietary choices! Shahnameh Restaurant If you live in Bahrain, and you love grills, Persian food, or are looking to try something outstanding in general, Shahnameh’s veggie kebab is a must-have. I would say if you’re looking to try anything from this list, this is what you should go for. Visit their Budaiya restaurant and dig into this huge portion of meaty goodness, along with mixed Persian rice, you won’t even believe it’s vegan.

Peroz Café If you’re stuck in the office and need a satisfying lunch, look no further than Peroz café, a calorie conscious ghost kitchen on Talabat. Their beyond meat vegan burgers are juicy and unctuous, especially “On ‘Yer Mind” with some added vegan cheese.

As the night went on, we had a chance to try WU’s restaurant menu, which featured international cuisine platters and sushi rolls. They had something for everyone, even the vegans! The fusion food was delicious, light and perfect to eat while partying the night away. Throughout the week, the events keep going at the restaurant and lounge; hosting a wide range of themed events including Sushi night, Steak Night, Fuego night, as well as exclusive beach parties at The Art Hotel’s pristine beachside. Wealso attended Fuego night, where a live Latin band performed and the dancers were ongoing until the night’s end, the atmosphere transported us to a Puerto Rican fiesta, no doubt. With such a diverse crowd, you really can’t miss out on making a visit to WU. Make sure to follow WU Restaurant & Lounge on Instagram @wulounge to stay tuned for all their updates and what’s in store. n
