Love in a desert Relationships are hard. Take two people, different opinions, different upbringing, different values -strung together by a shared interest in each other. Under day to day circumstances this is challenging enough, however we see within the other person something so special to us that we choose to push through these challenges because we cannot envision spending our lives without the other. Now take these challenges, add in different cultures, getting lost in translation, short term work contracts, the lure of a swipe to the left of right and you will get a glimpse of what its like to be “dating while expat”. If you aren’t completely reclusive its one of those things that is inevitable while living in another country as we try to throw done some form of roots. On your quest for someone to share your dinners with you will come across many interesting characters. There will be random marriage proposals because you made eye contact with someone for longer than 2 seconds (are you serious?) to dubious Facebook inboxes and awkward moments that could have been really awesome, if only you spoke the same language.

Media launch for the announcement of Bahrain's International Jazz Festival

Those that find, and keep, love in a new country should consider themselves very fortunate, as there are people that may spend their whole lives living next to “the one” but may never know it because we aren’t willing to step over and say hi. It all boils down to being willing to take that risk, meeting a few frogs and clashing with a few cultures. Sometimes love is not where we are, but where we have been, or where we are going. For many of us away from home, love has stayed behind. Oceans and time zones lie between us and love, broken connections and separate lives pull us away from love. However, if we truly love, and truly want to keep that love, nothing will keep it apart. No ocean or strange food preference will pose a barrier big enough, even if you keep a dictionary by your side in order to communicate. Love is a language all its own, let it lead the way.

How to Plan a 1 Wedding -

Get organized.

when you work a 9-to-5 job?

W

hen you already have a full-time job, planning a wedding can feel like you’re taking on a second

one. With the proper organization, time management, and delegation, it’s entirely possible to stay sane throughout the entire planning process and, perhaps more importantly, still keep your job. Here, two top wedding planners share their tips for finding time plan a wedding when you work a 9-to-5 (or later) job.

28 Bahrain Confidential October 2018

Before you do anything else, get yourself organized. “Once you set your wedding date, get out a calendar with your partner and start backwards from the big day and mark the dates of major deadlines you need to meet,” suggests Alicia Fritz of A Day In May Events. It’s a good idea to keep a binder with important notes and contracts, but you may also want to set up a Google Drive folder or Trello board that you can share with your vendors and any loved ones who will be helping you plan. Just like you would at work, add appointments and deadlines to your calendar and use your phone to set up reminders. Fritz recommends digital notifications for any important task, like the date you need to give your caterer the headcount and when your hotel room block expires.

Build your team.

Be wary of DIY projects.

Assemble a team to help you plan the big day, and whether that includes your family members and friends or professional planners is entirely up to you. With a full-time job, you’ll probably need to outsource at least a handful of the planning duties to professionals and your bridal party, so enlist the help of people you really trust.

If you already have your hands full at work, be careful of committing to too many DIY projects. If you realize that you can’t devote the necessary time to a task you planned to take on, don’t be afraid to let those projects go or to ask a friend or family member to work on it instead.

Give everyone a clear job description. Just as you would when working on a big project in the office, you should delegate tasks to your planning team and provide everyone with a clear description of what they’re responsible for. Create a wedding checklist, split tasks with your significant other, and create deadlines so that everything is accomplished on time.

Consult your schedule. You’ll find that most wedding vendors have limited availability for weekend meetings, so try to organize those dates early, or else plan to take a day or two off work to meet with your team. If you are going to use time off for your wedding, Shannon Leahy suggests scheduling as many meetings as possible on the same day to minimize the amount of time you’ll be out for. You’ll also want to be creative about how you pair your meetings. “Schedule your hair and makeup trial on the same day as your engagement shoot so you can look great for your photos and do those meetings in the same day,” she says.

Make the most of any downtime you have. The busiest times of the planning process will likely be the month of your engagement when you start meeting with venues and vendors and the month before your big day when you’re finalizing the details. Whenever possible, dedicate part of your lunch hour or any time spent commuting to fielding emails and setting appointments. n

Finding new homes for our furry friends... Almost 6 months have elapsed now since our eponymous founder sadly made his way over the rainbow bridge. Those few who managed to traverse some muddy Waters and stepped up to continue his good work wish to thank wholeheartedly everyone in Bahrain and beyond who has helped keep the dream alive. Our commitment to finding new homes for the animals in our care is off to a great start. The mighty ducks we once had have taken flight are now happily quacking in a bigger pond. Our menagerie of budgies and exotic birds are likewise now chirping and cheaping elsewhere in Bahrain. To date over 30 dogs and cats have either found their forever homes or a generous sponsor to contribute towards their care. In recent months, the surge in volunteer numbers has been overwhelming. Special thanks to those of the US Navy whose selfless dedication, warmth and generosity is emblematic of the very highest ideals of the Armed Forces. Our volunteer run boutique second hand store is now open 7 days and operating from new premises in Saar. The many donations received from both the public and local businesses has been astounding. We have installed 3 vital new kennels with a further 10 in the works. Essential repairs and maintenance to old and failing infrastructure has also been completed upgrading large sections of the centre to a more modern design. Over the years we have been extremely fortunate to receive regular donations of food from local pet stores and some very generous citizens. Their steadfast devotion to our cause continues to amaze. There is no word of thanks in all the tongues of men profound enough to express our reverence for and best wishes to the local veterinarian practices who collectively support our daily motions better than Atlas ever could. The Dogfather himself may now be gone but shall never be forgotten, his spirit endures permeating every nook and cranny of the animal shelter that was his life’s work. As always all are welcome to visit us at the weekend from 9-12 should you wish to volunteer, sponsor or adopt one of our animals as your own.

High-waisted jeans always seem to be on-trend: they're chic and can highlight your best assets and hide your flaws. These jeans sculpt and mold your body while keeping their shape. They are perfect for the hourglass or pearshaped bodies as they accentuate the waist and help trim more defined hips. Petite women can go for skinny high waist jeans too, the higher waist elongates your frame while the slim fit gives the illusion of longer legs.

The Roadster Reloaded

B

MW has redefined the roadster which will be revealed under the Californian sun. On 23 August 2018, the Pebble Beach Golf Links near Monterey, the wellknown venue of the Concours d’Elegance being held there a little later, will become the setting for the world premiere of the new BMW Z4.

World Premiere The new edition of the roadster will celebrate its world premiere at precisely the same location that served as the stage for the first public presentation of the BMW Concept Z4 last year. With its puristic, dynamic and progressive design language, the concept vehicle presented a vision of a charismatic sports car which, thanks to the production model, now becomes reality. Just a glance at the new BMW Z4’s proportions leaves no doubt about its dynamic potential. The central sitting position for the driver, the low centre of gravity, perfectly balanced 50 : 50 axle load distribution, wide tracks and a compact wheelbase form the ideal

Highlights The BMW Z4 M40i First Edition fulfils these expectations in every aspect thanks to an extremely powerful 250 kW/340 hp, straight six-cylinder engine and a sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission. The BMW M Performance automobile takes a mere 4.6 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h. Vertically aligned headlights, the BMW kidney grille sporting a mesh design, the bonnet stretching sports car-like over the wheels, large air breathers on the front wheel arches and the distinctive spoiler integrated into the rear lid all contribute towards the characteristic look of the new BMW Z4. The design of the interior also places the focus on the puristic sportiness

Design Moreover, for a perfect start into a new roadster era, the new BMW Z4 M40i First Edition offers specific design and equipment features that add exclusive accents to the car’s sporty flair. The expressive body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic is combined with an electrically operated textile soft top in anthracite with silver effect, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch light alloy wheels boasting a bicolour, double spoke design. The interior of the edition model comprises the Vernasca black leather trim with decorative stitching, electrically adjustable seats with memory function, the option ambient light and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System.

The new edition of the roadster will celebrate its world premiere at precisely the same location that served as the stage for the first public presentation of the BMW Concept Z4 last year.

Adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for the high beam, BMW Head-Up Display featured for the first time in a roadster and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional offering the latest networking technology underpin the advanced status the tradition-steeped concept of a two-seater, open-top sports car has reached with the new BMW Z4.

World Debut The world premiere of the BMW Z4 M40i First Edition in Pebble Beach offers a both exclusive and fascinating foretaste of the forthcoming on-road debut of the new roadster generation. BMW will announce all details of further engine variants, technical innovations and the diverse equipment features of the two-seater on 19 September 2018. This will be followed a short time later by the trade fair premiere of the new BMW Z4 at the Mondial de l’Automobile (4 – 14 October 2018) in Paris. Bringing the Diversity topic up to speed in the 21st Century Wherever you may be in the world reading this “Ask yourself” What reaction instinctively surfaces when you hear the word Diversity? Does it have a “possibilities and hopeful” ring to it? Or is it a “hush hush” thing which has a negative or ambiguous tone by default. Like many generations and professionals alike most people aren’t conscious of it meaning. More importantly its current growing and future impacts on the health of social and business dynamics and world leadership. At a glance by basic definition diversity is the acceptance and respect of others irrespective of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, personality or socioeconomic status. Numerous studies, blogs and extensive research benchmark and share the stories of how much diversity has a tremendous positive affect on conceptualizing creative ideas, innovation and team dynamics. Think of diversity as the old “superfood” which advocates are (at all costs) bringing to spotlight more and more in efforts to make industries across the world more conscious. Its past due! Women are not statistically a minority in most societies. However currently they do not share the same power, access or equality of opportunities in the workplace and have fewer privileges than men. What are its possible contributors to this? On the macro surface in a general sense we could say; misogyny throughout history and its dynamics, social heredity, cultural practice and other influences, … On the micro we could challenge our own perceptions as both women and men. As a career woman single parenting I often check in with my own unconscious bias-level of self-belief, confidence- “Am I enough”? What do I want for myself? DO I have a choice? Can I be a good mother and career woman? Can I have it all? IS it ok? What would they think? As a man with women in their lives (Mothers, sisters, daughters, employees etc.) they could challenge their own perceptions and mine for any unconscious bias regarding the above. What could shift as a result? The urgency to acknowledge the presence, value added and implications sooner than later will forever impact everyone. To be discussed ……

Back on the Move Osteopathy: An integrated revolution Services We Offer

F

or the longest time, healthcare was limited to a visit to the GP and complains were often solved with prescriptions or ‘over the counter’ drugs. The medical world has been changing – increased awareness about the over use of medication has created an environment where health issues are being scrutinised and other avenues are being explored. And that means an opening up of consciousness to a wider range of health care practices including an adoption of different modalities that were once thought of as ‘alternative’ but believed as complimentary or allied. Beyond Bahrain, the advantages of socalled ‘alternative’ health care practices have long been discussed and absorbed into the mainstream, but this has only been a recent move within the Kingdom. Thanks in no small part to Bahrain’s National Health Regulatory Authority, complementary health care has been endorsed and promoted over recent years, to the significant benefit of our country’s people, who now enjoy choice. Lana Peters, the founder of ‘Back on the Move Osteopathy’ is proud of just how far Bahrain has come in embracing different

modalities of healthcare in just a few short years. “I have always been a firm believer in the benefits of complementary therapy”, she explains. “As an Osteopath practicing for more years than I care to admit, I have seen the positive benefits that not just my profession brings, but also that of many other therapies. It is enlightening that we are witnessing a revolution in Bahrain – one that embraces healthcare diversity and allows an ever greater range of practice.” “We established our clinic with solid support from the NHRA some years ago and I’m proud that we now treat mostly Bahraini nationals who have embraced the concept of a drug-free preventative care, manual medicine which focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the muscular-skeletal framework”. With a professional staff of more than ten, Back on the Move’s holistic approach to healthcare offers osteopathy treatment together with chiropractic, therapeutic massage, pregnancy, fertility and menstrual massage, lymphatic drainage, cranial sacral therapy, fitness and postural correction coaching to provide an integrated solution for people with sports injuries, arthritis and mobility issues and more.

Sports massage “We work in a totally integrated way”, Lana explains. “Rather than being isolated in our own modalities, we refer and consult with hospitals and GPs to provide an integrated healthcare solution for our clients, in order to create the best possible outcomes for all”. It doesn’t stop there. Not content with the massive strides achieved over the past few years, Lana Peters has created a new outlet for healthcare: Working in partnership with Eyad Fareed principal of ‘Physio Relief’, a new practice has gained NHRA approval. Revolution starts with just one or two like-minded people, but to become accepted it has to attract the mind-set of the masses. Integrated healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved just that and more. As testimony to the foresight of Bahrain’s health authorities and the community, the revolution is over and integrated healthcare is now considered mainstream.

Health & Wellness

Ask HV Holistic Health… Now summer is over, my sleeping pattern isn’t consistent. I sometimes sleep for 5 hours, and other days it’s 10 hours. I never feel rested, even on the days I get 10 hours sleep, why is this?

Andrea Answers: Your body is designed to follow natural rhythms, even a 90 minute change in your sleeping pattern, can cause your body’s rhythm to become disrupted. Sometimes, an increase in tiredness can highlight a vitamin or mineral deficiency within the body. It’s worth getting blood tests run, to see if there is an underlying issue if you’re having chronic issues.

Your doze-dosage The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, activity levels and lifestyle. On average, adults need 7-9 hours, teenagers need 8-10 hours and younger children need 9-11 hours. Every 24-hour day is driven by our biological clocks, they link with the movements of the sun, the moon and the earth. A change to your sleep can cause physical, mental and behavioral changes, including feeling tired even though you have just woken up. A lack of rest can also increase your risk of gaining weight, an increase in blood pressure, and trouble thinking or concentrating.

Top Tips  Avoid caffeinated drinks after 4pm  Get into a bedtime routine - but don’t stress about it  Reduce bright lighting 2 hours before you go to bed

Try to go to bed, and wake up at the same time everyday, including weekends. Ideally you should be in bed by 10pm so your body can repair and restore effectively. Sleeping after 10pm means you could miss the physical repair phase. This is when your organs, bones, joints and muscles repair. If your regularly sleep after 2am, you will miss the psychological repair phase, this phase takes care of your nervous and hormonal systems. Having a deficiency in Vitamin D, Melatonin or Magnesium can affect your sleep. You can increase Magnesium levels by consuming foods such as, vegetables, dark leafy greens, figs, bananas and avocado, and melatonin supplementation can be advantageous in some circumstances.

Different types of rest Sleep is not the only form of rest our bodies need. We also need total, active and passive rest. Total rest can be taking a day off work, and other forms of stressors in your life. It’s the foundation of your repair and recovery cycle. Active rest is a reduction in workload, you can still be working towards your goals just not as intensely. Simply set fewer goals for the day, or catch up on some much needed paperwork or reorganization. Finally, passive rest is a short-term break from a project or task. This can be a walk, meditation or listening to music for no longer than 10 minutes. Passive rest helps to completely distract your mind from your work load, so you can re-energise and refocus. n

 Try meditation  Avoid using your phone when you’re in bed  Find time to do things that you enjoy  If a routine isn’t working, try something new. Some

people fall asleep to Netflix, while others prefer to read, there isn’t one idea that suits everyone. What’s important is that you make adjustments until there is improvement.

Raw Candy: For now a secret of those in AlMoayyed tower, Raw Candy quietly opened up before the summer and serves healthy salads, sandwiches and juices. Baker & Spice: This A’Ali mall restaurant has one of the best salad bars we’ve seen on the island. For 5.5BD you can top up your plate with 5 generous portions of daily changing salads and vegetables.

Adliya/Mahooz Banu: Located in Hala Plaza. Enjoy juicy skewers, steaming rice and aromatic stews for your meal. We hear they are going to launch a range of sandwiches this month and await trying them. Banana Leaf: This Thai stalwart in Adliya is a great stop for a quick green curry or Pad Thai. Don’t expect much here just quick service, good food and plenty of change from a 10BD note. Hash House: If you’re in Block 338 at lunch, then Hash House ticks many boxes. Great prices, a range of healthy and fresh dishes and good options for vegetarians and pescatarians.

The Secret to Real & Lasting Transformation When it comes to living your best life; whether that means developing your career, or making lifestyle improvements for your health and wellbeing, making smaller more achievable changes is your best approach. It will minimise the chance of regression and will have a greater overall impact on sustainability than making bigger more dramatic changes with the risk of resistance and overwhelm. Often we want immediate results and to make a big impact, but doing small things you can sustain over the long term will yield more permanent results, especially because it reduces the overwhelm and requires less willpower, which is in effect a limited mental resource. Behaviour change is not easy, but with the right mindset and strategy, you can improve your life, one small step at a time. Here’s how:  Habit Stack: seek to change one small habit at a time, only

moving onto your next habit change, once you’ve mastered the one before.  Try adding in new habits before removing less desirable

ones (make it easier for those to drop away.)  Don’t rely on willpower to keep you from, or to your

targets, it’s not always available.  Modify your environment to reflect your desired result.  Set a time frame (but be flexible as timelines aren’t always

accurate)  Set a concrete behaviour, not an abstract goal (eg,

Concrete: ask for a pay rise. Abstract: make more money.)  Appreciate you will regress because that is all part of

behaviour change, don’t let it derail you.  Don’t aim for perfection, just aim to improve.  Be consistent as Bruce Lee said, “Long-term consistency

trumps short-term intensity”.  Get comfortable with delayed gratification.

The Great Americana Food Fest Bahrain Confidential tries Downtown Rotana’s newest themed Friday Brunch!

T

he American food craze has reached epic proportions on Bahrain’s shores. Just recently, we embarked on a culinary journey through the United States of America at Flavours on 2, Downtown Rotana.

The brunch appeared to be a foodies' dream-road-trip across the 50 States of America. Traditional favourites from both coasts and a selection of legendary southern dishes were just waiting to be indulged in! An all-American brunch with down-home favourites can be found at The Great Americana Food Fest. From the salad station, we truly enjoyed the New York Potato Salad as well as the equally fresh California Avocado and Chicken Salad. However, the Montana Apple & Bean Salad stood out from the rest! With a wide variety of dishes, it’s hard to know where to start. We were

Comfort foods are staples for anyone craving for a hearty meal and a little taste of home…

Going Out impressed with the starter samplers served, giving us a preview on what to expect during the brunch. The plate included tasty dishes including an unexpected favorite: chicken and waffles. The mac and cheese, on the other hand, was noteworthy! The wonderful cheesy goodness makes it a staple side dish. Comfort foods are staples for anyone craving for a hearty meal and a little taste of home… and Southern food brings comfort like nothing else. Fried chicken, corndogs and macaroni and cheese? They’re all right here. There’s also an abundance of goodness at the live cooking stations. The steak section was just as good as ever. Finally, the sweet ending. Chocolate cake. Donuts. Live candy floss. These are just some of the desserts you’ll find at the Friday Brunch that definitely had us screaming for more. We can say that Downtown Rotana have put a lot of effort into making the experience look authentic. During the

brunch, the staff wore USA Flag-inspired aprons which was a nice touch. The service was exceptional; our glasses were never empty and were constantly being refilled. Aside from having our tummies full, the live entertainment also kept us cool! The fun doesn’t stop there! Diners can also enjoy free pool access. The Great Americana Food Fest is priced at BD22 and BD32 net and can be enjoyed every Friday from 12:30pm to 4pm. Book your seats now! n Price: BD 22 NET and BD 32 NET Opening Hours: Every Friday from 12.30 pm until 4 pm. Tips That Will Lead you to New Fitness Breakthroughs Whether you're training for a sport, a slimmer waist, or just for your general well-being, there's probably something you can do to make your hard work and time even more efficient. Maybe the key to improved performance is a new technique you haven't yet had a chance to try, or a slight tweak to your training approach. In some cases, a workout hack could even be training less — the old saying claims that you should train smarter, not harder. These tips may help you unlock new training heights. All you have to do is be willing to try something new and put in the extra effort.

Think Big What’s going through your mind when you’re exercising makes a difference. In a study in the European Journal of Sport Science, one group of trainees was told to “squeeze the muscle” while doing biceps curls and leg extensions. A second group was told to “get the weight up.” After eight weeks, those in the “squeeze the muscle” group (that’s called “internal focus”) grew their muscles 12.4 percent, compared with 6.9 percent for the latter (“external focus”) group. The findings provide more evidence of the nervous system’s ability to target a muscle, or “neural drive.” Put that into practice during your next workout. Instead of just straining to finish your set, concentrate on the movements of your muscles.

The Rule of 3 Does Not Apply If your main goal is slimming your waistline and you’re doing highintensity interval training (HIIT), rethink doing three workouts a week.

An International Journal of Sports Medicine study had 35 healthy but inactive people do 25-minute HIIT cycling zero, two, or three times a week. After eight weeks, those who trained twice a week and those who trained three times a week saw similar waistline improvements. To really get trim, don't overwork. Remember: a little intelligence goes a long way. n

The Fizz Pub

The Arch Hotel Bahrain introduces everyone to the most exciting hangout spot!

T

he reclamation of the New Juffair area is popping up some delightful treats in terms of entertainment outlets. Fizz Pub Bahrain is here to claim the number one spot for lounging and features the biggest HD Led screen in Bahrain. Situated on the fifth floor of The Arch Hotel, Fizz is designed on a minimal approach. Rather than being a typical “Sports Bar”, it’s being brought to the market as “A Bar with sports” enabling the public to have a more relaxed atmosphere rather than a multitude of sports paraphernalia pushed in your face. Its natural wood effect and huge windows make you feel elevated within the surrounding buildings of Juffair. The establishment also has the largest LED HD screen you will find indoors in the whole of Bahrain. The screen itself can be seen from literally every area of the pub, so we’re talking a cinema for sports. Fan of the premier league football? It’s as if you sat in The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford, watching the Red Devils in action (Yes, we are United Red at The Arch) or enjoying a cold one at The Oval with your feet up watching the test match. Surround JBL sound gives it that extra OOMPH when the ball hits the back of the net.

watering options in between. 12pm-9pm everyday is a whopping 25 percent off on all food and beverages. If you’re military or cabin crew, the discount runs for the whole 14 hours the outlet is open. Fancy a beer? Draught is for BD2.7++ from 12pm-9pm. Wine drinkers will be treated to ongoing specials, assuring proper price structure on bottles rather than extortionate ones. n

A generous amount of promotions is also going on at the Fizz Pub Bahrain. It opens from 12pm to 2am with all sorts of mouth-
