The path to recovery: Interview with Jan Gutzmann of Gulf Suites Bahrain Confidential talks to the Gulf Suites Hotel Amwaj’s General Manager, Jan Gutzmann, to know more about leading through crisis as well as the hotel’s journey in its path to recovery.

W

hat has the pandemic taught you about leadership?

The golden saying that “employees are your most important assets” has been even more evident during the pandemic. It is crucial during these challenging times to be close to your team members. Letting your employees feel that their leader is right next to them would make them more willing to support and follow you. I also witnessed how important it is to have an open communication with guests and suppliers. Moreover, I learned to adapt to changes quickly and continuously during the pandemic. When it started, we have immediately implemented additional health measure like sanitizing all public areas twice a day at GSH. It is

10 Bahrain Confidential October 2021

Feature We had a very good experience recently when we introduced our “workation” campaign.

What are the best amenities and/or attributes of GSH that make it stand out? As mentioned, we are not offering usual hotel rooms, we are providing apartments. In addition, we have five different types of restaurants and lounges, a great outside area with a large pool as well as a kid’s pool. Furthermore, guests can use our gym or make an appointment in our spa and saloon. Last but not least, our complex has a 24-hour super market within the premises which makes it very convenient for our guests.

Do you have any developments in the pipeline?

Jan Gutzmann

essential to ensure that guest and employees feel that they are in a safe environment. Without enforcing a mandatory protocol, all our employees chose to get fully vaccinated. They understood that this was the only way to reduce the risk of spreading the virus and the return to a regular business.

What challenges and opportunities do you see for Gulf Suites Hotel as we enter the Covid ‘recovery’ period? The main challenge at the moment are the remaining travel restrictions; however, we can witness that governments are easing it wherever it’s possible. The return of business travel to the same level before the pandemic will take some time. It is worth noting that, since we offering entire fully equipped apartments, we have a unique selling point. All our apartments from one bedroom to four bedrooms are furnished with a kitchen as their own balcony. Therefore, our property is the perfect place for the entire family. Guests can stay on their own and prepare their meals by themselves while enjoying the comfort of a fourstar hotel with all amenities.

Yes, we are currently in the final stage to roll out a fully automated program for our guests. Guests who booked with us will receive messages via WhatsApp before their arrival, during their stay and after their stay. This will allow us the opportunity to be in contact with our guests. Moreover, it will also allow them to be updated with our offerings and announcements. Due to the automated process, we will be able to avoid human errors and guests can access the information whenever it is convenient for them.

What’s your vision for GSH? To provide outstanding lodging facilities and services to our guests. Our hotel caters to individuals for business and leisure, as well as corporate traveler. We emphasize high quality standards in our rooms and our food and beverage divisions. We provide a fair and best return on investment for our owners and recognize that this cannot be done without well trained, motivated and enthusiastic employees.

What advice can you give to hoteliers/businesses who are struggling to recover at the moment? Don’t hide yourself; stay in front whenever possible. Take a positive approach, face the situation and find solutions together with your team. n

In this article, Bahrain Confidential interviews Dr. Sinai Mansoori, Obstetrics & Gynecology Consultant at Alsalam Specialist Hospital.

Is it safe to get vaccinated during pregnancy?

12 Bahrain Confidential October 2021

Dr. Sinai Mansoori

T

he interview talks about minimally invasive procedures, women’s health and more.

Tell us something personal, why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine, specifically, obstetrics and gynecology? Obstetrics and gynecology are the only specialties that focus on medical and surgical treatments at the same time. Personally, I have always been fascinated with handcrafted art and surgeries. I found my passion in minimally invasive gynecology. What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a physician, and even specifically, as an OB/GYN? The challenges that I always face is the shortage of public awareness on the minimally invasive approach in gynecological surgeries. Another challenge is the lack of proper education on the advantages and superiority of laparoscopy in modern surgery.

I advise pregnant and breast feeding women to get vaccinated. However, this has been improved to a great extent in the recent years. Education and awareness have been given great attention through social media and electronic communication which has significantly enhanced the health services in Bahrain. What is the most common issue that patients consult you for? Many patients visit my clinic to undergo laparoscopy surgeries. These patients wish to have faster recovery and better cosmetic outcomes.

How important are regular check-ups to the OB/GYN? What would you say to people who are hesitant on getting checked? Routine check-ups and screening are extremely important to detect potentially life-threatening health conditions or diseases early. These visits also increase the chances for cure and limit the risk of complications by closely monitoring existing conditions. Overall, regular screening and check-ups increase lifespan and improve health. There are a lot of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers who are hesitant on getting the COVID-19 vaccine. What would you advise them? The United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration has recommended the use of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine for pregnant and breast feeding women. This recommendation was based on the scientifically proven safety of the vaccine among pregnant and breast feeding women. On the other hand, there is a higher risk of complications and morbidity with COVID-19 infections during pregnancy, therefore I advise pregnant and breast feeding women to get vaccinated. For current and prospective students who are interested in working in gynecology and obstetrics, what message can you give them about preparing for this field? The field of obstetrics and gynecology is full of challenges and growing demands which needs to be implemented on a solid ground of training and education. For the young obstetrician and gynecologists, we are always happy to accept clinical attachments to promote and improve their surgical skills and medical knowledge. n

Focaccia By Hungry Fifi (@hungryfifi) Ingredients: For the dough: • 2 1/2 cups lukewarm water • 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast • 2 1/2 teaspoons honey • 5 1/3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon fine sea salt • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the pan and finishing • Flaky salt, for finishing For the brine: • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1/3 cup lukewarm water Instructions: 1. In a medium bowl, stir together water, yeast, and honey to dissolve. In a very large bowl, whisk flour and salt together to combine and then add yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a rubber spatula until just incorporated, then scrape the sides of the bowl clean and cover with plastic wrap. Leave out at room temperature to ferment for 12 to 14 hours until at least doubled in volume. 2. Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons oil evenly onto a 18-by-13 inch rimmed baking sheet. When dough is ready, use a spatula or your hand to release it from the sides of the bowl and fold it onto itself gently, then pour out onto pan. Pour an additional 2 tablespoons of olive oil over dough and gently spread across. Gently stretch the dough to the edge of the sheet by placing your hands underneath and pulling

outward. The dough will shrink a bit, so repeat stretching once or twice over the course of 30 minutes to ensure dough remains stretched. Dimple the dough by pressing the pads of your first three fingers in at an angle. Make the brine by stirring together salt and water until salt is dissolved. Pour the brine over the dough to fill dimples. Set the focaccia aside to rise for 45 minutes until the dough is light and bubbly. Thirty minutes into this final proof, adjust rack to center position and a second rack to the upper position. Preheat oven to 450°F. If you have a baking stone, place it on the center rack. Otherwise, invert another sturdy baking sheet and place on that rack. Allow to preheat with the oven until very hot, before proceeding with baking. Sprinkle focaccia with flaky salt. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes directly on top of stone or inverted baking sheet until bottom crust is crisp and golden brown when checked with a metal spatula. To finish browning top crust, move focaccia to upper rack and bake for 5 to 7 minutes more. Remove from oven and brush or douse with 2 to 3 tablespoons oil over the whole surface (don’t worry if the olive pools in pockets, it will absorb as it sits). Let cool for 5 minutes, then release focaccia from pan with metal spatula and transfer to a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. n
