Early Spring Where: Dubai Opera

‘An Inspector Calls’ Where: The Junction J. B. Priestley’s 1945 play ‘An Inspector Calls’ opens with Inspector Goole approaching the well-to-do Birling family about the death of a working-class woman. Bringing an abrupt halt to their celebrations at home, Goole shares startling revelations that challenge not only the family’s foundations but the audience's principals. The adaptation is directed by multi-award winner Patrick Sandford and stars the cast of London’s West End, RSC and National Theatre professionals. Showing from 10-13 September.

Dubai Opera and Shanghai Opera House are partnering up this 10th to 11th September to host a contemporary dance drama. Early Spring is adapted from Rou Shi’s novel February, a story that grapples with the contradictions of idealism and reality. Protagonist Xiao Jianqiu is serving as the main line, where his indifference to the vulnerable in rural China reflects a general attitude during the 1920s.

Passion’s Gone? There’s nothing scarier than losing your enthusiasm of performing a certain hobby for once in your life. As a student who has joined several art competitions in Bahrain before, I have also experienced the loss of passion and drive, specifically in the field of arts. I was able to reach the borderline of losing the real purpose turning my thoughts into something tangible and visible; I felt like everything is done not for the passion itself, but because of the deadline or external stress. Hence, I would like to share some of the symptoms of loss of passion and enthusiasm and how I was able to overcome the psychological beating by asking you some questions: 1. Does everything feel like work and repetitive? a. Passion became a daily routine and creativity became an option. When you’ve lost all the enthusiasm, creating something new becomes a difficult task due to monotony caused by repetitive work. Find a new source of artistic inspiration to reignite the creativity within you! 2. Are you trying to produce too much even if it means overloading your mental plate? a. Here’s the thing, we are still humans and we are not programmed to perform and squeeze out our abilities around-the-clock. Noticing that you’ve reached the maximum time that you dedicate for your passion is enough to tell you that you need to slow down and enjoy your talents instead of overextending your capabilities. 3. Do you feel like you become dragged by external pressure? a. We always seem to fall on expectations or what is ideal which cause us to feel exhausted and reflect on our selfworth hence, affecting our enthusiasm. Try to reconnect with people who see the true value of what you do instead of what they want to see. Besides, at the end of the day, passion is what you do for yourself not for anyone else. After years of taking a break from the arts and upon reflection with these questions, I was able to reignite the fire and get back on track. Currently, I have been joining art exhibits with hopes of learning from fellow artists as well as to share my God-given talent. n

No need to rush! I’ve developed a bit of a habit recently listening to podcasts when I’m in the car (I spend a lot of time in the car) or in the mornings at home when cooking up breakfast… usually whilst rushing around. One Tim Ferriss podcast really hit me recently (Tim Ferriss is a well-known American entrepreneur, author and podcaster). Derek Sivers was the guest of this particular podcast and he explained how some years back when he was living in LA he would cycle this same long beachside route every single day; red faced, huffing and puffing, trying to complete the route as fast he could – rushing the journey. One day, for some reason, he decided to take his time and enjoy the ride. He breathed the air, enjoyed the view and even spotted dolphins in the sea and beautiful birds in the sky. He was in the present moment, and realized what life he had been wasting. This same journey usually took him precisely 43 minutes when rushing, took him 48 minutes (or less) when he decided to just take his time. The rushing was not worth the 5 minutes. It made me question – is the rushing we seem to do every day worth it? I’ve learnt to occasionally “stop and smell the roses”. Conveniently located on the third floor of The Westin City Centre Bahrain, the Heavenly Spa by Westin provides the perfect escape from the arduous of city life. Just recently, we had the chance to experience the spa’s newest promotion, ‘Lavender Desert Dream’. Starting the 1st of September, Heavenly Spa by Westin will be highlighting ‘Lavender Desert Dream’, which includes different packages that are tailor-made to suit a variety of needs. Spa & Recreation Manager Ferdinand Taaca, shared that all treatments are infused with lavender which is a perfect calming remedy for summer’s end. During our visit, we tried the ‘Butterfly Effect’ - this treatment involves having the antioxidant rich oil massaged into the body for an hour. Lavender oil can benefit the skin

Once settled, we were guided to our treatment room. Our relaxing journey commenced with kneading strokes on our tired limbs. The soothing scent of lavender oil filled our room as we embarked on an hour of rest and self-indulgence. Our therapist was well trained and the massage at Heavenly Spa by Westin was beyond a simple treatment. It was like a symphony of all things good and calming. After the massage, we were served a warm cup of ginger tea at the relaxation lounge. True enough, Heavenly Spa by Westin’s new promotion is a great end of summer treatment. If your skin is beginning to look a bit tired and dried, it might be time to engage in a moisturizing treat. The Butterfly Effect massage will make your skin look fabulous whenever you bare it! Car Review

A Day Out with

Ferrari in Manama An opportunity to review Italian finery within a more common daily routine. 40 Bahrain Confidential September 2019

Car Review Lunch was a seemingly never ending delivery of exotic flavours at Jumeirah Roya Saray’s Play restaurant. The highlight, an exquisitely present duck salad, provided the fuel for the return journey to the Euromotor’s showroom in the new Ferrari Portofino.

The recent facelift of the car has improved its looks greatly and with the increased power.

I

t is always a pleasant surprise to receive a call from Ferrari. On this occasion it was an invitation to join the team for lunch, with a nice twist of course, the drive to lunch would be in the GTC4Lusso and the return in the new Ferrari Portofino.

Having recently driven the 812 Superfast, a firm favourite, it had been some time since we last drove the Lusso. The recent facelift of the car has improved its looks greatly and with the increased power, now 681 bhp and four wheel steering it has become even more purposeful. Spending an hour on the urban roads of Bahrain certainly did not give us a chance to test the 208 mph top speed, but the huge acceleration certainly made our progress through traffic much more fun and ultimately faster than a lesser car; at just under three and a half seconds to 100 kph, this car is quick! Even after this short time with the car, it has most definitely warmed our hearts and is possibly one of the most exhilarating ways for four adults to travel comfortably across any continent.

We recently reviewed the car in the mountains of UAE, but driving the car through the afternoon traffic of Bahrain provided a different experience which did alter our view of the new entry level Ferrari. This much needed replacement for the California has a more aggressive styling and has certainly gone a long way in placating the critics of its predecessor. In the mountains, at speed, we commented that the electronics within the car seemed to disconnect us somewhat from what was going on underneath. However, our more mundane drive and possibly more common daily experience, of, arguably, a daily-drivable Ferrari, has altered this view somewhat. In traffic the car is most manageable and arguably a more relaxing drive than it’s more highly tuned and more powerful siblings. We took the opportunity, despite the August weather, to drop the roof down; it is too hard not to enjoy the wonderful sound of the twin turbo V8’s exhaust symphony, regardless of being fried! Certainly a day of pleasant surprises. Both cars provided an exhilarating drive in the most mundane of environments,

that in itself would be perhaps enough reason to purchase either of them. Of course, on open roads and in more normal temperatures, either will provide an exceptional drive. n For more information please contact Euromotors on +973 17 734 734.

is an arm sport – it really isn’t because you make use of everything – back, shoulders, legs and core. The boat weighs the equivalent of a polar bear and with 20 paddlers inside the boat, close to 2 tonnes. Today, dragon boating has become one of the world’s fastest growing sports. During races, teams of paddlers paddle furiously to the beat of a drum, providing spectators with an exciting and colorful sight. It’s unlike any sport you will have ever done, but you shouldn’t be put off after your first go – it will feel strange and your muscles that you didn’t even know you had will ache! Activity #1 Mabuhay Paddlers Training Schedule:

Dragon Boating

POOL TRAINING (PT) 7.30PM - 9.00PM / Monday Nasmah Star, Juffair

Originating from China, Dragon boating has a long history attached to it. In ancient China, the dragon boat was used for religious purposes as a way of appeasing the rain gods. The first participants were superstitious Chinese villagers who celebrated the 5th day of the 5th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Racing was held to avert misfortune and encourage the rains needed for prosperity – and the object of their worship was the dragon. The dragon of Asia has traditionally been a symbol of water. It is said to rule the rivers and seas and dominate the clouds and rains.

LAND TRAINING (LT) 7.30PM - 9.00PM / Wednesday Marina Corniche, Coral Bay BOAT TRAINING (BT) 4:00PM - 6.00PM / Friday 5:00AM - 7:00AM / Saturday Bahrain Rowing & Canoe Centre, Bahrain Bay

However, all you need to know is that there’s a boat, a lot of paddling and a massive amount of team building to be done! An average one hour training session can burn anywhere between 500800 calories. Many people automatically think this

Whether you’d like to engage in dragon boating competitively or just for fun, Bahrain has a place for you. The Bahrain Rowing & Canoe Centre is home for amateur and elite athletes to learn, compete, build an inclusive community and reconnect with the island’s maritime history. There are also several paddling teams you can join like the Hurricane Alpha Racing Dragons, Mabuhay Paddlers and RP Eagle Warriors, Bahrain Fit to Row, X3M Dragon Warriors, among others. Paddling, like most things in life, doesn’t improve without practice. The Mabuhay Paddlers Team (@mabuhaypaddlers) offers training sessions for beginners. This includes preparation training in land, pool and boat. n

Growing healthcare disciplines for growing awareness of choice…

W

hat started out as an Osteopathy clinic has evolved dynamically into a multi-disciplinary healthcare centre, offering a range of treatments and becoming a holistic complementary healthcare centre with a growing reputation amongst its diverse client base. Back on the Move has earned a solid reputation in Bahrain – and also in the Eastern Province, particularly KSA (Saudi Arabia) – for its professional and deeply caring approach. Led by its founder, Osteopath Lana Peters, Back on the Move now enjoys an extended team of highly qualified healthcare professionals.

We can now assess patient need and integrate more than one type of treatment to create a cohesive plan for recovery. Fully approved and supported by the NHRA, the team offers a variety of treatment modalities, interconnected to provide the highest level of care and patient outcomes. “Our clients now have a greater choice than ever in treatment types,” explains Lana Peters, “We can now assess patient need and integrate more than one type of treatment to create a cohesive plan for recovery. Often, patients will respond to one type of treatment or a mix of several to gain best possible results”.

Dr. Lana Peters

“Right at the beginning, we placed a sign on our entrance which said ‘Integrated Healthcare Centre’ and it’s still there! It reminds us each day of our unique approach,” says Lana. “Over my career in healing, I have always believed that effective healthcare should be a multi-faceted offering, and I’m proud of our current diversity”. Clients may visit for an initial consultation and be offered services considered of best effect for a particular problem and often, patients will experience more that one type of treatment during their course of recovery sessions. Beyond its initial service of Osteopathy treatment, Back on the Move currently also offers Chiropractic, Acupuncture, a range of Therapeutic Massage techniques, Aromatherapy and Myotherapy, together with advice on stretching and mobility, diet and nutrition. This is a mix of disciplines – all dedicated to pain relief, improved posture, with faster recovery from injury or better lifestyle for our clients. Why all this? The answer is simple: To get you back on the move again!

Back on the Move isn’t just about Osteopathy alone. In fact, the driving vision has always been to be a centre for multiple healthcare practices – and to educate the people of Bahrain to understand what that is, and how they can benefit.

A Touch of Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahrain-based artist, Yasmin Al Mostehy.

id you study art formally? Tell us about your education and training. I never studied art formally. I started painting as a hobby a few years ago, when I had a wooden cabinet that seemed dull and drab. I started experimenting with different designs and colours, and then added mixed media elements to the cabinet, such as brass knobs, wooden artifacts, and fabric, and the result was a piece that received a lot of praise. I continued this stream of art on different pieces until I developed the kind of art that I do now. Can you describe your painting process; how do you know when your artwork is finished? How long does it take to finish a piece? The first step is to pick a theme, such as African designs, or Tibetan motifs. Then, I take a furniture piece or canvas, divide it into segments; squares or rectangles that are arranged haphazardly. That acts as my overall grid. Once the piece is segmented, I begin sketching the first design in the first section with a pencil, and then painting that same

Art look with some dark colours to contrast. I can’t say I have one favorite colour. It’s the combination of bright and vivid colours that gives me the effect I want. What inspires you as an artist? I am most inspired by places I have been to around the world. I spent a big part of my life visiting and living in different countries, and over the years, have accumulated my inspiration based on those places. Some of my pieces are inspired by the

section in acrylic paint. Only when one section is finished completely, do I design and sketch the adjacent one. I just repeat this process until all of the piece is painted. After the paint dries, I outline every design in black. I find that it gives boldness to the piece and the contrast of the colours and the black lines make the designs pop out more. It is a process that builds on itself. When I first start a piece, I don’t know what the end result will look like. That unravels itself to me while I am working on it. A piece is finished when it is completely covered in paint and outlined. What is your favourite colour and why? The most characteristic thing about my pieces are the colours. I use very vibrant and bright colours in each piece, and balance the overall

time I spent in Africa, which was my strongest inspiration. Places like Nepal and Sri Lanka also inspire me. It wasn’t only things like scenery, food, or culture. It’s a feeling that I use to have when I was there. I was inspired by the happiness and peace I felt when I was in those countries. I like to think that my choice of vibrant designs reflects the colours of my soul when I am those places. Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Bahrain is one of the places that inspires me, because it is a country where I am at my best. I love the fact that you have a view of the sea almost anywhere you go. The kindness of the locals fills me with a general feeling of love. And the culture of generosity and acceptance makes this the only place I would want to be now. Emotional Intelligence Koussay Hammoudeh, certified Team and Executive Coach by Marshall Goldmsith, certified Life Coach by Erickson and EQ-i Emotional Intelligence Assessor by MHS, shares the value of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in different aspects.

A CEO and co-founder of Square One Business Initiatives, a leading business solutions provider.

52 Bahrain Confidential September 2019

Feature

E

motional Intelligence is the ability to recognize, control and express your feelings, identify and appraise the emotions of the people around you. It measures one’s social and emotional competence and the interaction with others, the response to stress and pressure in our personal and work life. Understanding the difference between EI and IQ The IQ represents one person’s reasoning or logical competence and it is inborn ability. While the EI refers to one’s ability to identify and understand his feelings and of those that surround him. The IQ is an indicator of the academic competency, how well we might do in school or university, while the EI indicates the success in our lives and careers. The emotional intelligence can be improved, refined and acquired whenever we desire, while the IQ is determined by genetics and cannot be changed by any method at any stage of our lives. The importance of EI in everyday life Higher level of EI helps to deal with uncertainty and troublesome situations as we manage our emotions more successfully. With more developed EI we are more self-aware, able to empathize with others and communicate effectively, overcome challenges and act more rational. The effect of the Emotional Intelligence in the workplace Studies have proven that the EI plays a significant role in how the employees interact with each other, the way they manage stress and conflicts, the overall job performance and job satisfaction. Emotional Intelligence has been ranked sixth out of 10 skills in the World Economic Forum’s list that employees should possess in order to succeed in their workplace. Therefore, large number of organizations across the world replace IQ tests with EI’s assessment in their hiring process as more and more employers value the importance of the EI level as indicator for leadership potential. The importance of Emotional Intelligence for Leaders Years of research has shown that leaders tend to score higher in Emotional Intelligence than the general population. Also, many professionals find it easier to focus on improving a few specific skills that underlie broader leadership competencies, making the EQ-I 2.0 subscales the perfect building blocks to reaching your leadership potential. Emotional intelligence is an important characteristic for anyone at any level in the organization, but it is especially important to for those who have a leadership position. The EI has influence in how the leader communicates and manages the team. A more successful leader is the one that understands how his emotion and actions affect the people around him, one

that controls his emotions in any situation and reacts in a calm way. The level of EI is connected to the leadership capabilities, to one’s competence to manage and lead, but also probably most relevant – to inspire the team. The best leaders are not individuals with high IQ but excellent motivators, self-aware of their strength and weaknesses, that emphasize humility and empathy rather than arrogance and egotism. The EI is not a skill that can be learned or perfected with taking one course or session, but a process that requires time and patience to learn about yourself, understand your feelings and help others do the same. How do we measure and improve our EI? The EQ-i 2.0 is the world’s leading psychometric assessment tool which measures Emotional Intelligence and how it can impact individuals, leaders, teams and the workplace. It is the first scientifically validated measure for emotional intelligence combined with research from premier organizations. Created by Multi-Health Systems Inc (MHS), a leading publisher of scientifically validated assessments for more than 30 years which products are sold in more than 75 countries around the world. Based on more than 20 years of research worldwide, the EQ-I 2.0 examines an individual’s social and emotional strength and weaknesses. Respondents selfreport on their life and workplace performance in 15 key areas of emotional skill that have been proven to contribute to proficiency in complex business activities such as conflict resolution and planning.

Implementing the assessment as part of the leadership coaching will bring the organization higher performance. The coaching can be focused to the individuals within the team which will impact the organization performance or for leadership development.

The EI assessments are inexpensive, simple and very effective way to impact leadership development by coaching, job rotations and assignments; and can help during hiring and developing staff. n www.koussayhammoudeh.com

HV Holistic Health -

Combining Fitness with Friendship

Including your friends in your workout, could lead to better fitness results. HV Holistic explains.

W

orking out with a friend can be a lot more fun, and make an hour pass quicker than when you’re alone. But, there are also hidden benefits to sharing your training schedule. 1. You’re more likely to remain dedicated. This applies both during the workout, and after. 2. You can motivate each other, during the rest of the week. If you’re trying to stick to a diet plan, having someone that’s on the same page as you will really help - especially in social situations or the evenings when will power is at its lowest. 3. You’ll become more competitive with yourself, and each other, when you can see progress.

Chose a friend who’s of a similar level of fitness to you, so that you’re going to be reasonably competitive with each other.

4. You’ll often learn more. After all, two minds are better than one. 5. Evidence shows you’ll skip fewer workouts. It’s hard not to show up when you know you’re letting someone else down, as well as yourself. 6. Studies have shown that you’ll stick to a program for a longer period of time than if you train alone. 7. You’ll be more consistent with the type and intensity of exercise that you participate in.

54 Bahrain Confidential September 2019

8. After gruelling workouts, having someone that’s also suffering with a few aches and pains, can be a real support. Knowing that any DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), is normal, because your friend is feeling it too, can be beneficial to know you’re on the right track. Of course, there are some things you should consider before committing to a workout partner. 1. If one of you quits, you are both more likely to quit. Chose a partner that has a similar work ethic to you, and isn’t likely to come up with excuses about why they can’t attend sessions or stick to their diet plan. 2. No two people are exactly alike, and as such, your workouts will always contain a certain amount of compromise. If you’re hiring a trainer, make sure it’s someone that understands how to efficiently train two people at once, so that one of you doesn’t get overlooked, or over/under worked. n Contact Andrea on 17775544 or email info@hvholistichealth.com for more information. Finding your Inner yogi Yoga isn’t meant for me’ ‘Yoga is very slow’ The most common misconception that people have about yoga is that it is done in an exotic place with slow music and this comes from people who have never tried yoga. Spirituality in yoga is what makes it unique from any other form of fitness activity and that’s what led me to take this path. I feel that when someone says ‘yoga isn’t for me’ he wasn’t able to get in touch with his spiritual side while practicing what I call ‘Inner Yogi’. Your inner yogi is your best guide, coach or mentor who gets intuitions. It can never want anything bad for you. Once you find this yogi you will no longer need external help you will be at peace at all times. Yoga should be treated like any other subject like Science or History. Hence, we teachers have a huge responsibility of not only introducing it to it but also guiding you to feel the experience. In the context of yoga what I am trying to explain is that:1. There are various forms of yoga with so many teachers teaching various styles. 2. Just by attending one yoga session with a single teacher you might be able to get the spiritual experience Hence you should continuously explore until you find the teacher that resonates with you .There will be instances where even teachers trained under the same Institute will have different styles of teaching and only you can figure out what style appeals to the Yogi in you. Earlier I used to get really worked up about these misconceptions. I made my peace when I came across this quote, “You cannot want something for someone more than they want it for themselves and beat yourself up about it.” Now I have started to believe that only when the time is right people will be able to start their journey in this search. And while you read this, think about this ‘is this the right time for me to start my journey towards finding my inner yogi?’ n

Building Relationships It's impossible to achieve success without building relationships. Building relationships is important both professional and personal. In the workplace building relationships with others leads to positiveness where one can enjoy working around others comfortably whom he/she can trust therefore achieving more. Good relationships can turn into business partnership if both parties develop strong trust with each other. Gaining and strengthening relationships with others not only develops your business but also develops your trust with the other party and vice versa. Professional relationships as well as personal relationships always involves trust as it’s the backbone to keeping the relationship strong and healthy. Without trust, a relationship can fail. Trust is a set of behaviours including believing, feeling secured around, feeling comfortable around, depending on the other person and showing care to the other person. Trust towards another person is not achieved in a single day but over time and showing through your actions that you can be trusted. Trust should be valued deeply because it can all go away in a spilt second if you have done something against the other person’s wishes. Once the damage is done, it will take time to repair the trust you have previously built with that person. So you always need to be honest and not do anything he or she dislikes to maintain the relationship. Building relationships is also important as you can learn new things from the person who you built the relationship with and they can also learn new things from you that will help each other in the future. Having good relationships with your teammates will create synergy easily therefore the team can do tasks more efficiently and effectively and promotes new knowledge from each other. Building relationships, both professionally and personally have many advantages. It promotes, social and business communications. It creates motivation within a team. It increases your reputation therefore, the person who trusts you can introduce you to other people and establish relationships with them. Also help can be given or offered when both persons have a strong relationship with each other. We are pleased to recognize, for the first time, the best restaurants in Bahrain. Bahrain Confidential the asked experts from Bahrain’s leading luxury hotels to reveal what were in their opinion the island’s best restaurants. Each hotel provided up to 3 F&B professionals, whose job it is to know what makes a restaurant special, to judge. No suggestions were offered. Our only stipulation was that restaurants recommended must not be connected to their own hotel band. Based on combined votes there were 12 winners + 28 restaurants that were “Highly Recommended.” Sponsored By:
