First of all... A recent incident of animal cruelty shook many of us in Bahrain to the point of initiating an online petition to be signed against animal abuse on the island. Three puppies were allegedly tortured to death by beating and burning them – gruesome! What did they do to deserve such a painful end?

Acting Assistant Editor: Melissa Nazareth Editorial & Contributors David Hollywood John Ridley Rita Moussallem Nadine Compton

This is not the first case of animal abuse in the Kingdom. There have been quite a few in the past; for instance, the dog that was hanged in front of her newborn pups, organised dog fight camps, abandoned strays… It’s heartening to know that this time the accused are being tried in juvenile courts. What’s disheartening is that juveniles (children/youth) committed the crime. It makes us ask ourselves if there is a gap in our parenting. Are we teaching our young the right first lessons?

Layout and Design: Mohamed Nada Photographer Shareef Panhatt Admin & Finance Nikesh Pola

The world is competitive and one needs to be the best to get ahead and stay ahead. As parents who want the best for our children, we encourage them to take up as many extra curricular activities as possible apart from school, which is great! But may be, we need to start teaching them virtues too. Kindness toward animals, responsibility toward the environment, generosity toward the needy…and remember, children learn more from observing us than from what we ask them to do. Social work needs to become part of family activity. Only then can we hope for a better present and future.

art space

As part of the Bahrain Britain bicentennial celebrations, British artist Jack Melville’s portraits will be exhibited at the Harbour Towers from 4th May onwards – West, Bahrain Financial Harbour.

Melville achieved fame through his massive-scale portraits and is known for using creative and intricate patterns to portray a concise human

portrait. Most of his early works are very large portraits drawn from photographs of family and friends. This technique is called photorealism or hyperrealism.

“I chose to make art hard for myself, thereby forcing a personal artistic breakthrough, by abandoning the paintbrush.” – Jack Melville. PROUD TO SUPPORT

MY BAHRAIN

Didem Bynum is a Turkish Fashion Designer living in Bahrain. We’re a fan of her accessories, which she designs as a hobby, and want to share her work with you guys. That’s an interesting name, what does it mean?

3 accessories I can't live without…

Didem Bynum

Pupil of my eye...

…would be my earrings, necklaces and watches.

So, you’ve always loved fashion designing?

My next holiday destination…

Fashion and design have always been my passion, and I even graduated in the same field. When I was young, I made dresses for my Barbie dolls and then as I grew older I made my own clothes and accessories. I loved creating new things, following new trends, watching fashion shows, and then designing something truly original for the world to appreciate.

I love travelling, seeing new places and cultures, and trying local foods. I have been to Africa, Egypt, Jordan and am very curious about Cuba. I think that’s where my next vacation will be and I can't wait!

My best place to brunch and dine…

I'm from Turkey, so, I love Turkish food especially the street food in Istanbul. I also love wining and dining in Bahrain because there are so many options, but my favourites are Sofitel for brunch, Trader Vic's for dining, and for a quick lunch it would be Frangipani.

What do you love about Bahrain?

After I got married, I lived in Dubai for a while but we eventually came back to Bahrain. The island’s rich history inspires my designs and gives me the time to pursue my passion.

My shopping hotspot…

I don't really have a favourite spot. In Bahrain, you never know what you might find in the least expected of places like little street boutiques...

David Hollywood reflects upon the turmoil in our lives and how this is paralleled and represented so effectively through the imagery of storms. What squalls shall ache your turmoiled mind, As deluge feels to stroke your heart, Erodes and splits and drowns, and parts, Those thoughts we feel to find?

Suzi Khan, a Bahraini child artist, bagged a role in an upcoming Bollywood blockbuster featuring actor and legend Salman Khan! Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Suzanne Ahmed Khan and I’m 6 years old. I study in kindergarten and am an only child to my parents. I love acting, dancing and modeling, and have been doing photoshoots in Bahrain and Dubai for a while now.

When did you do your first shoot? When I was 1½ years old.

What do you want to become when you grow up? I want to be a model and actor.

When gales of wrath, Roar winds to mourn, A dread of views that form, Our thoughts retreat, From fears replete, Mid tempests moods that warn, Destruction is the gales receipt, For thinking in the storm. We would complete our journeys feat, If minds weren’t terror bourn, By images that hearts have notched, Inside the helpless scenes we watch, As frightened moods corroding awe, And noises that we saw, shall gnaw, The pillars of our minds which sway, Gainst shudders that shall shake to slay. And as our temples quake from shock, Of knowing our beliefs not rock, The torments in our mind, bereft Of tranquil poise, which storm had theft From quietude, in gusts that soared, And winds that madness cleft, Against our certainty’s conceit, And postures now left obsolete. Left humble in the silent dawn, We learn to realise, This day by chance we thoughts the one, Is varied by the earth we’re on.

What do you love about posing for the camera? I love putting on make-up, wearing new clothes and then posing. I love seeing my photographs afterwards.

3 things you can’t live without? My parents, make-up and my iPad.

Your message to children like yourself? Always enjoy life, respect your parents and study.

INTERVIEW WITH

PUNEET SAIGAL

General Manager at Elite Resort & Spa Earlier this year, Puneet Saigal joined the team, bringing along almost two decades of experience with leading names in hospitality. We catch up with him and talk about his love for hotels and the outdoors.

Puneet Saigal

visited Bahrain last October,” says Puneet, “but moved here from my hometown, Delhi, in January. It’s a nice place and the people are really friendly, which helps you settle in faster. Puneet is pretty excited about his new role and working in Bahrain’s hospitality sector. He believes that though hospitality is the same everywhere, the types of guests change. “In the past, I’ve interacted more with business guests but at Elite Resort & Spa, we have more leisure guests,” he explains. A believer of management by walking around, Puneet stands in the lobby during peak hours to ensure he talks to as many guests as possible. “It’s important to listen to your customer,” he says. “I train my team to do the same. We work with people of varied nationalities and our guests have different backgrounds too but if one listens carefully, one can deliver,

28 Bahrain Confidential May 2016

probably even beyond what’s expected.” Puneet stepped in right before the busy F1 season. A racing enthusiast vouching for Lewis Hamilton, he tells us he how much he enjoyed the whole experience. “Motor racing used to happen in India too but Bahrain was different. The property did well and we hosted many guests." We ask him about the next busy season that’s round the corner, Ramadan. “We are in the process of planning the details and like every year hope to put up a good show. The whole team is quite excited. We will definitely have the Al Noor tent. It is the venue to be at during Ramadan, with its great décor and delicious food!" We’re surprised to find out that Puneet was a shy child who avoided dining at hotels. “I was too conscious and used to feel everyone’s looking at me,” he confesses. But fate had other plans. Despite a brief stint at a call centre (yeah!), Puneet realised

that his true love is hospitality. “I started my career at Taj in Delhi where I took care of flight catering for about 3 years. After that, I moved to InterContinental, which is now The Lalit. I also worked for The Imperial for almost 6 years, and the Grand Hyatt and Hyatt Regency. Shangri-La – Eros Hotel is another hotel I worked with. Further I’ve even had the opportunity to start hotel properties from scratch. I led the team for the opening of Crowne Plaza in Delhi and Sarovar Hotels, a leading Indian hospitality chain.” Puneet has even done cross training programmes across India, and abroad including Hong Kong and London. Though Puneet enjoys the grueling hours that the hospitality industry demands, he believes in work life balance. “A good break for me would be time with my kids and no phone calls. I’m an outdoorsy guy and so most of my weekends are outside. We occasionally go to the beach and do BBQs.” Another motto Puneet lives by is take a decision and don’t regret it. “It’s the best advice I received in life and have lived by it ever since!”

A revered decade is back to wow the fashion world! The 90s was all about minimalism, and sporting a slovenly, thoughtless, uncoordinated look, but with an edge. Pair these designs with frayed denims, slip dresses and flannel shirts to ‘rock’ the floor as you walk the town!

WHAT’S YOUR POINT?

Pointed-toed heels certainly complete your ultra formal business look, but also help make a fashion ‘point’ when paired with casual and chic boyfriend jeans, and a statement shirt. Want to ‘flat’ter your outfit? Try these pointed-toed snake skin sling backs by Michael Kors.

soul talk

Rita Moussallem talks about renouncing negativity through a telepathic contact with the Divine. Many people who practise meditation experience that whenever they do any action against truth and values, they feel separated from God and have to work to re-establish that relationship. Many think that God is omnipresent. To think of God as being present in all things is to think negatively about God. There are many things, which have nothing to do with God but are the play of human actions, example, God is not present where any violence is taking place. God helps you to realise your mistakes and strengthens your voice of conscience. One of the purposes of meditation is to become pure and free from all forms of negativity through a telepathic contact with the Divine. Whatever happens to your soul makes an impact on your body and on the surroundings. Purification of the material world occurs as a consequence of the purification of all

human souls. Where the activities of people are pure and full of values, there is a very pleasant atmosphere. God is not responsible for everything that takes place in this world such as natural disasters, or the death of our loved ones. God gives everyone total freedom to act as they see fit. Yet God is often blamed for negative occurrences. When you think of God in this way, you get cut off from that source of sweetness, wisdom and light. God is the giver of happiness, not the giver of sorrow. Sorrow is the automatic consequence of negative action performed by human beings. When you realise what is evil and negative and renounce it, you can reasonably assume that this will improve your world. The unique gift of the Divine is the power to recognize and to resist negativity. It is up to you to absorb the understanding, and use the power to act.

SMILE TALK

Dr Ali Al Juffairy of Al Juffairy Clinic talks about the future of dentistry. What are the new trends in dental care?

Dentistry has come a long way particularly with advances in clinical dentistry, materials and technology. These changes have impacted both, patients and dental practitioners. We are constantly looking for ways to improve clinical courses and dental technology.

Any new treatments at Al Juffairy Clinic?

We offer world-class dental treatments including Digital X-Rays, which is new, and less harmful compared to traditional X-ray machines with higher radiation levels. The image can be instantly viewed on a computer, allowing faster and better assessment. Invisible Alignments are also offered to align teeth using clear,

practically invisible braces, which make cleaning easy. Our patients can get Dental Implants as well where we use screws as replacements for the root portion of the missing teeth. The Intraoral Camera is yet another advanced technology allowing dentists to clearly examine the insides of patients’ mouths. Try our Zoom! Whitening treatment, a great way to give your smile a makeover! We whiten and brighten your teeth in minutes and the procedure is painless. Many patients come to us for their ‘Hollywood smile’, and ask for whiter veneers. Al Juffairy Clinic now offers a lot of veneers in BL1 and BL2 shades. Home Bleaching, Gummy Smile and Gingivoplasty are also available.

What are the common dental issues in Bahrain? Gum problems and tooth decay.

Dr Ali Juffairy (Centre) with his team at the Al Juffairy clinic in Seef 48 Bahrain Confidential May 2016

Your goal for the future?

Al Juffairy Clinic started back in 2004. We moved from Salmaniya to Seef in 2011. Over the years, we have improved the clinic’s facilities for patients and those who wish to learn the art of dentistry. We also conduct on-the-job training for aspiring dentists, and partner with dental education initiatives – for instance, the recent workshop held at Juffair Charity Society. Dentistry is not just a profession for me. I hope to spread awareness on dental health, and never stop improving and advancing.

MANNERS’ GULF

Aiste A Daubaras shares her views on theatre etiquette.

A

s my very good friend and international etiquette guru Liz Brewer once very accurately summarised, “Etiquette and modern day good manners are to do with using your common sense, not causing offence and making others feel at ease”. Sadly, another clever quote by Mr Voltaire springs into ones head, that 'common sense is not so common'... Neither are good manners, apparently, as my recent theatre visit proved amply. We all are quite used to 'Inshallah' timing on our laid-back and easygoing island. But can it apply to occasions when we have an international star performing on our stage? If she or he even managed to learn a few words in Arabic in order to show us their respect, would it be too much to ask of us to adopt an internationally practiced rule of Turning-up-to-the-Theatre-On-Time? And then having crawled in 25 minutes late, start flashing our phones into the artist's face...

To be fair, unfortunately, neither rudeness nor lateness is exclusive to this part of the world. However, old world theatres are smarter in that sense and take precautions of running announcements before every performance, reminding the audience to switch off their phones and not to use photography (i.e. flashes) during the show. They also cleverly train their staff to not allow latecomers in the middle of any performed piece (no matter how long). So you have to wait until the applause stars to get into your seat. Very good disciplinary measure, as after I had once watched an entire first act of Noel Coward's 'Hey Fever' on a tiny monitor in the theatre's bar myself, I vowed never ever to be late again. Regrettably, it is impossible to prerecord enough announcements in order to cover every possible breech of good manners ... or even common sense. How many a time, in various theatres all over the world, I wished that someone had reminded the audience these basics principals: "Do not talk during the show", "Eat your

dinner before the show, not during it", "If you have to cough, cover your mouth", "Unwrap your cough-drops (or sweets, if you must) before the show", "Try not to fall asleep", "Applaud discreetly", "If asked to sing along, don't try to outdo the artist". However if one has not familiarised oneself or hasn’t learned these simple truths from one’s family, it is neither the place nor the right time to teach fellow audience members how to behave... So lastly, 'Don't be a disruptive Miss Manners'. In other words, to quote another source of eternal wisdom 'Do unto others as you should have them do unto you"... or rather... don't...

Feed The Need The Untold Story

M

any have been talking about Feed the Need (FTN), which celebrates its second anniversary this month. While we know this is an excellent initiative, how much of a difference has it made? Melissa Nazareth visited few of the locations where the fridges are installed and spoke to people in the area. The FTN team has been smart enough to set up most of the fridges in areas with a cold store or restaurant close by. That makes it so much more easier because you can simply throw a few extras into your cart while grocery shopping or grabbing a grub. Those few items will go a long way toward helping someone in need. We found out that few fridges are doing exceptionally well, for instance, the one in Hidd. It’s right outside a Turkish grill shop and people keep stocking food when they drop by for a take out. What’s better? The shop owner is kind enough to contribute whenever the fridge is empty. We also discovered that few areas aren’t doing too well. For instance, the fridge 70 Bahrain Confidential May 2016

in Mina Salman hasn’t been stocked for almost three months! The people there told us that water, at best, is donated during summer but winters run dry. On probing further, Michelle Bailey, one of the founders, told us that the lady who installed this fridge and monitors it was away for three months. This is an industrial area with many workers who can use supplies through out the year if only we as a community are willing to be generous. There is a cold store in the neighbourhood too! We spoke to a few workers in Sa’ar as well who told us that FTN has helped them sort out at least one meal a day. “While we’re happy with curd, milk and fruit, we wouldn’t mind more meat,” they said with an innocent smile. Those of you who have donated in the past must have observed that the food disappears in minutes. Though the FTN team has put up instructions saying ‘one item per person’, who takes what and how much is difficult to control. Moreover a full time security volunteer to monitor the fridge is realistically impossible. As such, sometimes, people who really ‘need’ and not ‘want’ might get nothing. We

spoke to someone in Juffair, where one of the fridges used to be, not anymore, who

(Top) The owner of Showpiece Grills in Hidd with an employee & (Bottom) Bahrain Confidential's Melissa Nazareth with the workers in Sa'ar.

social told us that often, one person used the supplies while the more needy ones shied away. She even tried calling them to come and take the food but they were too timid. One way to work around this is watch out for people who can use the supplies when you’re making your donation, and hand them an item or two before stocking the rest.

Spreading the Love

Conceiving the idea and installing the fridges was the first step, and kudos to the founders for successfully doing this!

Now, it’s our turn to take things to the next level, and put something in those fridges, put the YOU in comm-YOU-nity. Apart from contributing food, you can also volunteer to donate fridges or host them. The Holy month of Ramadan is round the corner. It’s a great time to start if you haven’t yet. It takes just BD20 to fill an entire fridge. That’s about how much you pay for a family meal at any good restaurant. As far as making that trip to the fridge is concerned, let FTN become your family activity, something you do

over the weekend or midweek. Your kids will not only enjoy the whole process of grocery shopping and stocking but also learn the important lesson of giving.

World Earth Day 2016

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today! While most of us limit ourselves to social media activism, few of us on the island decided to make things happen for real. As part of their CSR efforts, Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands and Gulf International Bank (GIB) supported by the Capital Governorate organised a planting activity with employees, guests and the general public to express their commitment toward our environment.

How can you help?

Make small but effective changes in your lifestyle; plant flowers in your garden/balcony because the bees that play an important part in balancing our eco system need them; use a bucket instead of the shower; switch off the mains when you’re done using an appliance… the list is endless. Remember, the earth is the only place we can call home – we must take care of it!

Send us your ideas on green living or a story about how you made a difference to the earth. We will publish it in our magazine and on our website. info@arabianmagazines.com

FESTA ITALIANA

Elite Seef Residence & Hotel invites you to experience Italy on a plate. Chef Massimo Lamberti, who recently joined the team, shares his pasta secrets, and talks about the essential difference between Italians and the rest of the world.

Chef Massimo Lamberti

I

l Giardino, the Italian restaurant at Elite Seef Residence & Hotel, has made a couple of improvements that you’re going to love. They’ve got a new chef who is originally from the beautiful countryside of Tuscany; set up a state-of-the-art pizzeria, which vows to dish out the authentic deal from its wood ovens; and spruced up the overall menu to include new and improved dishes for you to enjoy. Chef Massimo cooks over 25 varieties of homemade pasta! “Most places in Bahrain where I’ve dined serve similar types,” he says, “there isn’t much variety. I hope to offer guests a welcome change. For instance, ricotta spinach ravioli is common but I invite you to try my crab, lobster and fruit raviolis.” What is the secret behind good pasta? “Three things top the list for me,” he says, “the dough needs to be smooth, the sauce needs to be light so you don’t over power the taste of the filling in the pasta and the dish needs to fill you up while leaving enough room for main

78 Bahrain Confidential May 2016

course.” That is why Il Giardino serves 120gms instead of 200gms of pasta per dish. The charming maître d' politely interrupts our interview to tell us the menu for the evening. We find out that we will be starting off with a salad made of calamari, and walnut and olive oil dressing, garnished using deep fried celery. Then there will be two soups followed by a penne pasta dish slow cooked in a butter and leeks cream reduction with a pinch of

sweet paprika. Afterwards, we will be digging into a redeeming plate of homemade gnocchi with saffron and blue cheese sauce, and the dinner will end on a sweet note of classic Italian tiramisu. Chef Lamberti tells us that the first soup follows a recipe from the south of Italy, and is made using fregula (read couscous), royal clams, fresh tomato and parsley. “When the Arabs occupied Sardinia where fregula is originally grown, there was a fusion of the Arabian couscous and local fregula which led to the ingredient being used in

Italian dishes,” he adds. The other soup, we learn, is a typical Tuscan dish made with Italian beans and farro (read cereal). Now we’re not so much into the sweet tooth thing but still liked the tiramisu (who doesn’t?). No, but seriously, this one was so good – moist and flavourful. “For me, there is just one way to make tiramisu,” says Chef Massimo, “and that’s the Italian way!” Apparently most restaurants use cream when ideally one must use mascarpone. Also, savoiardi (read Italian sponge finger biscuits) are replaced with the cheaper, sponge cake.

Does Chef Massimo have a favourite Arabic dish? “I enjoyed eating goozi,’ he says. “I love lamb and prefer mine medium rare. The meat in goozi is more like a confit of lamb but I enjoyed it nonetheless. He goes on to tell us about a pizza he created where he substituted oregano for zattar (Arabic herb) and his guests loved it. Chef Massimo loves food! Yes, even the occasional burger and fast food. We’re not surprised, after all, like Chef Massimo says, the rest of the world eats to survive unlike the Italians who survive to eat!

last word

7 THINGS THE MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE ALL HAVE IN COMMON 1. First, Don’t Be Boring – Many people are terrible at realising when they bore others because, well, we all think we’re just fascinating. If you’re always to the point and stay upbeat, it’s extremely hard for anyone to accuse you of being poor company. Tip: Is anyone asking you questions about what you’re saying? If not, maybe it’s time to end the story.

2. The Most Captivating People Are Good Listeners - Impressing people can be great but also devolve into status jockeying, one-upmanship and envy. Talking about ourselves triggers the same sensation of pleasure in the brain as food or money. You can make an excellent impression by saying amazingly little. Ironically, the people we like the most often say the least.

3. Talk About The Other Person’s Interests - Why struggle to guess what most people might find interesting? Ask people what they’ve been up to. Then talk about that. You’re now 80 per cent of the

way there. If you know about the subject the similarity will bond you. If you don’t, ask them to explain and be a great listener.

4. Have Three Good Stories Comedians don’t just talk about anything when they’re onstage. They have their act rehearsed. Always have three good stories on hand that reliably entertain, inform or engage. Tip: People are generally more interested in stories about people rather than things. We all find human behavior fascinating.

5. Don’t Forget Charisma - It’s not all about the words. Some people are engaging but if what they said was transcribed, it would be unimpressive. One often quoted study (Mehrabian & Ferris, 1967) found that of all the information conveyed to another person when we say something that is emotional (not informational), only 7 per cent is contained in the actual meaning of the words we use. Laugh. Smile. Be passionate. Gesture. Modulate your voice.

6. Be Somewhere Interesting Got a say in where you’ll be at, as with a date or meeting? Pick someplace stimulating. Context matters. In general, we’re lousy about realising where our feelings are coming from. Research shows excitement from any source is often associated with the person you’re with even if they’re not the cause of it.

7. And Most Importantly: Live An Interesting Life - Remember the theme of Don Quixote: If you want to be a knight, act like a knight - If you don’t read, watch and think about generic things, generic things are less likely to come out of your mouth. This doesn’t need to be expensive or difficult. Hang out more often with the most interesting people you know. The Longevity Project, which studied over 1000 people from youth to death had this to say: The groups you associate with determine the type of person you become. And to pursue that ends up being far more rewarding than merely making a good impression on others.
