Last month, we were at one of Bahrain’s five-star hotels for a dining event. Needless to say, it was an exquisite experience; food in this part of the world can almost never go wrong! The fine dining restaurant had an open kitchen and we could see the chefs going about their business. We couldn’t help but think of the contrast inside and outside the kitchen; a lot like the proverbial duck swimming glacially across the lake; calm on the surface but paddling frantically underneath. Outside the kitchen, guests enjoyed their meal and talented musicians serenaded happy diners with their melodious symphonies. The kitchen on the other side must have been a pressure cooker; expert chefs were whipping up their gastronomical creations and working relentlessly to offer guests a great experience. The maitre d’ and his team were wearing their best smiles, delivering impeccable service. The lesson here is respecting the efforts of others who make life better for us. We may be independent, but are certainly not self-sufficient. Everyday, we take so many people for granted – our mothers who cook us breakfast, the guys who wash our cars, those men who clean up our dumpsters, employees who work for us or even our pets who wait patiently for us to get home. Let’s make it a point not just to acknowledge but appreciate and thank them – that way we make their lives better in return!

David Hollywood’s latest offering is a poem which looks to expose the confusions we can experience with people we know and/or trust and have expectations of, and whether we are important enough to them, or is it that they make us schizophrenic? And where am I between your times? Brought closer by our separate lines! Where gulfs close gaps, And spaces share, A hollow thought filled inner stare, At what the senses fuming glare, Required! – As wanted, without care, Say no to feelings, dared to task, In search for promised feelings asked. Ambitions grasp the future shift, Of movements glimpsed, as nether gifts, Endorsed, entreated traitors scene, Is private trust, fore shared, fore seen, Our partners wanting, waiting, lean, For what shall now just make you scream.

I get to see various events and activities that promote local talent in the country and I’m really glad that young artists are being given good opportunities nowadays. I have started working on my second collection “Wings and Tales”, which calls inspiration from a quote by the famous poet Rumi – “You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them and fly.” I usually work with acrylics and watercolors. I also enjoy sketching and illustrating with graphite pencils and markers.

THE SHINE COLLECTION For Her
Raymond Weil’s Brand Ambassador Katheryn Winnick introduces the new dazzling shine watches.
An exquisite symbol of sensuality and elegance, the Shine collection was first launched in 2005. For its 40th anniversary, the Swiss watchmaker presents a new shine, equipped with a quartz movement, combining delicate curves, feminine refinement, diamond purity and enchanting mother-of-pearl for some models. The 32mm round case has been harmoniously set with diamonds and plays with the nuances of light. Whether in steel or with yellowgold PVD coated steel, shine’s many facets make this watch jewel a must - fully in tune with the rhythm of every woman. Presented with two different straps, shine also plays with women’s various moods. A unique simple and discreet system accessible on the back of the watch has been entirely developed by the Brand’s internal Research and Development department. It allows women to choose between two looks and feelings by changing the bracelet in a wink. Thanks to this new Raymond Weil’s patented, quickand-easy interchangeable bracelet system, this watch jewel can go from a contemporary urban and casual look with its steel bracelet to a more glamourous and sophisticated evening style with the satin strap. Raymond Weil’s multi-talented ambassador Katheryn Winnick perfectly embodies this new dazzling collection. TV series Vikings’ leading star is the face and wrist of the Brand’s feminine collection since 2015. Her natural beauty and undisputable charisma make her the perfect match for the independent watchmaker. Shine’s double facets echo the actresses’ ability to portray her different characters.

Interview with Lilian Roger, General Manager at
DOWNTOWN ROTANA L
ast month, we headed downtown (pun intended) to the third luxurious property of Rotana Hotels and Resorts in Bahrain. Nestled in one of Bahrain’s busiest districts, Manama, the 26-story five-star hotel offers guests the perfect contrast, lively on the outside and relaxing on the inside. Not that the interior of Downtown Rotana is any less dynamic. The first thing we notice when we enter is how well-lit the lobby is. The colours used add to the luxe factor while giving the hotel a home-away-from-home feel. We later find out that all areas of the hotel from the restaurants to the ‘secret hidden on the 9th floor’ (please turnover for the image!) are equally bright and warm. While we’re making ourselves comfortable on one of the many love seats in the lobby, we see the charming Lilian Roger, General Manager at Downtown Rotana, walk toward us. A fan of horse riding, he believes that both, the best and worst thing about the hospitality industry, is that everyday is different! We head to the cosy coffee bar on the same level and after a quick photo-shoot, begin our informal chat.
30 Bahrain Confidential April 2016
interview
What attracted you to the hospitality industry?
I was 11 when I told my parents I wanted to be a waiter. Lucky for me, they let me follow my dream. I worked at a few restaurants, one thing led to another, and I ended up as Manager with an international hospitality brand. Even though no one from my family is part of this industry, I was always attracted to it, particularly its service aspect. I studied hospitality for 7 years at the Hotel school in Bordeaux and then at the University of Savoie where I received my Postgraduate Degree in Marketing and Hospitality Management.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in all these years? It was back in 2004 when I was working at the Hilton Nagoya in Japan. I had to deal with a major wedding banquet complaint and thought I could solve the issue just by meeting the guest and apologising. I visited the guest’s house with our wedding manager who could barely speak English, and I couldn’t speak Japanese. I was clearly told that I was in Japan and that if I wanted to interact with the Japanese I needed to know the language or bring someone to translate. I spent four hours sitting on my knees on a tatami! It was a tough learning curve and I realised that being sensitive to culture is an important aspect of guest relations.
How did your time in Asia put you on the fast track?
Lilian Roger stands in front of the stunning glass wall at Downtown Rotana. The wall offers a great view of the hustle bustle in Manama district
I worked in Asia for more than 9 years – 3 years in Japan and 6 in China. I was Director of Food & Beverage at the Nile Hilton in Egypt when an opportunity to move to Japan came along. I saw it as a chance to flourish; then, most people were not keen on relocating to Asia. I knew that in such a situation, accepting the offer would guarantee a career jump.

interview How are you finding Bahrain?
business. Guest satisfaction is another parameter – we need to secure business for the future and expand the hotel’s loyal customer base. We focus a lot on training as well. For instance, I’ve learned that the Saudi market forms a major chunk of business for Bahrain’s
Most 5-star hotels offer the best facilities. Then it all boils down to the human factor. The nature of the service industry is ‘with people for people’. We focus on taking care of our staff who in turn will take care of our guests. We have a good mix of former Rotana employees and those

who’ve worked with other brands in the industry. That way each employee brings something different to the table from his/ her experience. We also try and engage with guests as much as possible.
What I like about Bahrain is there is always a solution to everything. My team members are flexible and our guests are flexible. For instance, we can make last minute changes
It’s rare for a 5-star to open on time! Any interesting stories to share?
Any opening is challenging. I came to Bahrain in January 2015 and it took me around a year to set up Downtown Rotana, which is standard in this industry. Apart from technical aspects including testing equipment etc, we need to ensure safety and security standards are met. I’m responsible for the 300 plus staff at the hotel as well as every single guest who stays with us, and there is no way we can open until we get all the green lights in term of safety and security.
What do you hope to achieve for Downtown Rotana, any benchmarks you’ve set?
Benchmarks in success have different components – financial of course. This is a BD40 million project and like any contract there is a financial obligation to improve 32 Bahrain Confidential April 2016
There are so many premium hotel properties and chains being built in Bahrain and internationally. Do you think demand can keep up with supply?
When an international chain signs an agreement in a particular country, it is convinced of growth and potential there, especially companies like Rotana which have positive track records with opening new properties. Whether the opportunity is big or small is debatable but there is definitely an opportunity.
How do you differentiate Downtown Rotana from other brands in the industry?
What in your opinion are the property’s USPs?
I haven’t met a single guest who hasn’t spoken positively about our bright interior – lobby, restaurants and rooms – and colour choices. Further, our signature restaurant, Teatro Downtown, an awardwinning concept in our properties out of Bahrain, is the highlight of our F&B offering. It has an open kitchen where a selection 160 different dishes from the menu will be prepared. Also, a hidden secret on the 9th floor is our rooftop pool, overlooking the Manama skyline. Guests can keep fit and relax with our stateof-the-art facilities at Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club, which also includes a dance studio, Jacuzzi and spa.

Is For Everyone
KOTON
Right from something as iconic as the gingham print and Chloe-inspired crossbody saddlebag to something as casual yet chic as glittery slip-ons, tunic dresses and ruffles, Koton has it all. The range includes crochet full-length dresses and tops, geometrical and floral prints, metallic accessories and retroinspired shades, and more. What stands out for me in this collection is how you can revolutionise your day look with heady hues, statement tops and flared bottoms – say goodbye to your conventional and serious (read boring!) office wardrobe.

My story is titled, ‘Fashion Is For Everyone’ and I mean what I say! Yours London vows to spoil the ‘curvy woman’ for choice. The range is designed very intelligently to hide problem areas – for instance, the bestseller is a full-length maxi dress, layering feminine lace over bodycon, giving you a straight fit. The collection also features florescent colours, ‘jeggings’ and quirky tee shirts to please a younger audience. What stands out for me in this collection were the tees – team them up with printed bottoms or even regular ones and you’ve got something!

NEW LOOK
The range for men and women includes lots of denims, and nautical, floral and Aztec prints. Peppy colours usher in the spring fever perfectly. What stood out for me in this collection is the minimalism – very 90s – and also how something as workaday as denims can transform your look in seconds if you wear them with a twist – as sandals or a blouse instead of the conventional shorts and shirts. A fun line of accessories includes jewellery, bags and footwear, and a section for beachwear is part of the collection too – time to tone up the bikini bod?

Amouage’s tenth volume in the Library Collection, Opus X, is inspired by the internationally acclaimed film The Red Violin, which tells the story of a perfect red-coloured violin that travels from owner to owner over four centuries and five countries, inspiring passion and depicting the fate of each of its many possessors. Amouage’s Creative Director, Christopher Chong, masterfully composed the fragrance using different facets of the Rose to represent the enduring and bewitching soul of the mysterious violin. A poetic homage to olfactory experiences, the Library Collection is a celebration of integrity, creativity and virtuosity. Each of the ten fragrances defies categorisation, transcend gender and inspires the wearer to compose their own unique narrative.

Vylette Hall My best memory about my mother is of her being a disciplinarian. When I was a kid I didn't understand why she was so strict but as I grew older, I understood she was just being protective and disciplining us. I am so grateful for what she did and it taught me how be independent; everything she taught me helped me survive. And one other thing I am thankful to her for is that she loves me despite not being my real mother. She never made me feel that I didn’t come from her, that I wasn’t her own. She accepted

My mother got married at the tender age of 18. She is the iron lady and a great inspiration for all of us. She has made a lot of sacrifices, sometimes even her own desires, to raise us and take care of our family in the best way possible. Her unconditional love has kept our family glued together. I’ve never seen her take time off from her full-time duties as a daughter, daughter-in-law, wife,

Sonia Jalil Winner Honestly, I don’t really know what to write about my o a br Jal mum because d il's mum an words won’t suffice. She is truly a precious gift from God. There are many people in this world who have lost their mothers and I believe I’m really lucky to have mine. When I was about seven or eight years old, my brother born and I was very upset because I wanted sister. One day when my dad was in office and my mum was busy I picked up my baby brother, who was asleep, and put him in the fridge. When my mum finished her work and got to the room, she saw my brother was not on the bed. Worried, she asked me where he was and I simply said I didn’t know. After an hour my brother started crying and my mum opened the fridge…no points for guessing, she gave me a good pasting! But a few years down the line, I got what I wanted – a sister – and I love both my siblings!

morning, they with their daddy, cooked me lovely breakfast. I was so happy to have breakfast in bed for the first time ever: there was my favourite chutney and capsicum sandwich with tea and biscuits, Indian sweets, napkins plates…we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Later that day, when I entered the kitchen, I got my real surprise! It was spick and span when in fact I was expecting something else – all the mums will know (smiles). My husband and I then took the girls for a treat and spent the day in a park.

My one and only daughter, is who I would like to spend this mother’s day with. Now that she is married, I hardly get to be with her, or even share a few words with her, face to face. Mother and daughter time is something I have always cherished with her. Being together on this day would help us relax and revive our old memories.

My mum deserves a day of pampering because she works incessantly, taking care of everyone, but herself; Mother's day is the perfect opportunity for her to enjoy a rejuvenating spa. My best memory with my mum was her birthday celebration few months back (20th November). I took her out for boating followed by dinner at her favourite Indian restaurant.

My mother has always tried to keep us under her gentle wings, away from all danger and the people who can play with our minds. She has lived in Bahrain for 29 years and still hasn’t seen the whole of the island. Mum has spent most of her life worrying for us and so, this mother’s day, I want to give her a day of joy and luxury. For once in her life I want her to feel special and tell her how much I love her!

Mrs Suya Sivanath, my mum, has never complained about anything – unlike most modern homemakers today who vent out on social media if not directly (wink!). My brothers and I are so lucky to have her and unanimously believe we will never find a better person than her!

everyone around her is happy and I believe she truly deserves some pampering for herself this mothers day. I have many fond memories with her (and hopefully many more to come) but if I had to pick one, it’s when she was upset about something and I let her rest her head on my lap and stroked her hair; she fell asleep too! It felt so nice because usually it’s the other way round – my head is on my mum’s lap. I’m glad I could help her relax (smiles)!

My mother is always busy with family and work. She is very hardworking and manages her time well so she can care for us. She rarely takes time out to rejuvenate. This mother’s day, I’d like to win her the luxurious spa treatment at ART Rotana so she can enjoy a day of pampering, which she totally deserves. I’d also like to share a story from my childhood. When I was younger, my mother didn’t do a day job. One day I prayed for her to find a good job and decided I’d start taking care of myself. I wrote this petition and placed it in our prayer room. What a surprise that the very next day, she got a call! Yes, she took up the new offer and God gave me strength to take care of myself. My mother and I fondly remember this memory to this day!
Ameer Basem wins the spa at ART Rotana Amwaj and Sonia Jalil wins a dinner for two at Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa. Thank you to all our readers who participated! Winners are selected at random. Those who didn’t win, we have loads more fun stuff lined up in the near future, keep writing to us! We want more of you to share your stories with us. great laugh, listened to our friend Funky G (George) rap, and ended up taking silly selfies with oversized glasses and other fun props. Oh, and we hijacked one of the hotel’s golf carts to catch a ride back to the shore. So yeah, life is pretty interesting when you know the right people plus you get to hang out with an interesting crowd, taste wonderful food, promote your business and get more invites! And we don’t just party – Saturdays are all about sports and detox. We do an 8km-stroll around Amwaj with the girly squad – no excuses! A posy of 5 woman, 4 to 5 kids and 4 dogs makes for a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter, silly talks about anything from plastic surgery to how to spice up the bedroom (when kids are not listening!), and how to eat healthy. We also get to burn a lot of calories too, get the kids tired (mine, never!), and exercise becomes soo much more fun! My girlfriends motivate me for so many things from achieving my fitness goals to looking pretty and composed like them. Also

here is nothing more important when living on the island than to have your bestie, your perfect girlfriend and partner in crime. And finding one is almost as tough as finding a husband and equally important. There are many events in Bahrain and going together with your girls can make it a fun-filled adventure full of laughter, silliness and girl talk! When I want to unwind I have my crew of girls that I hang out with, exercise with, gossip with or all of it together. Georgina and I are two BBs, as I like to calls us, ‘Blondes With Brains’. We click on so many levels and share so many common interests like fashion, beauty, fitness and views on life. Plus she has amazing sense of humour, and is not stuck up or self conscious, and of course we are suckers for E! channel. Furthermore, she is a food blogger and fashionista, and gets invited to these fabulous events and I get to tag along. And me being a pianist and musician, between the two of us, know most of Bahrain’s social scene; I get invited to cover music gigs, jams and parties, and also go to support my colleagues when they play at events. Also being married to a Chef, I attend many food tastings, food festivals etc. So, we are perfect partners in crime!
48 Bahrain Confidential April 2016
We went to a fabulous party organised by the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain hosted on their private island. The theme was the 80’s and we enjoyed amazing food while rocking our colorful wigs. I had a pink one on and Georgina a blonde one. Our friend Fifi, also a food blogger, had worn a green one. The funniest part was the costume competition we participated in. Georgina looked like Crystal from Dynasty and I like a youngster from Serbia in the 80s. Being a musician and pianist, I was very comfortable on stage and loved grooving to the music, occasionally doing my little twirl. I really thought Georgina deserved to win, while my costume was just fine, hers was great! She came in second, which was a shame as they were giving away lunches and dinners at the hotel’s fabulous restaurants, as prizes. Anyway, we had a
in times of trouble, they listen to me, offer advice without judging, and give me a new, refreshing angle on things… And Georgina effortlessly pulls off looking gorgeous while walking 8kms with 2 small pups without grunting or stopping! So yeah, blondes do have more fun and life is so much easier when I have my partner in crime on my adventures!

contributor in Portuguese... and we well and truly bonded at the end, seeing her off with a very passionate standing ovation. Such was the warm and heartfelt Bahraini welcome that Mariza even made a promise to return to us soon. So with that promise in mind, I decided to capture on paper (a very difficult task indeed) at least some of the magic of that night. Actually, an impossible task, as how do you put the music, which is so richly laced with deepest feelings, into plain, ordinary black-and-white words... But I shall try my best. Fado (translates as destiny or fate) is a music genre, which originated back in the 1820s in Portugal (originally mainly in Lisbon). Performed in smoky cafes and taverns in a melancholic, almost mournful
B
ahrain National Theatre – our pride and joy! Regally nestled by the water, this magnificent modern and elegant edifice, once lit and blazing in its full glory, beacons us like moths to a flame, small creatures rushing in, for some culture, aesthetical pleasure and enlightenment. But why oh why, does it not enlighten us beforehand about the artistic treats lined up in store for us, the public; and unless one has a very well developed bush-telegraph of culturally aware friends, sadly, rather too often, the said treats pass us by quite unawares. When I was doing my research on the lovely Portuguese singer Mariza, 'Queen of Fado', who recently entertained Bahrain with her soulful music, I was overtaken by an uneasy premonition, of what this, international award winning singer, who is used to performing to full-houses in large stadiums and concert halls, will make of our half empty auditorium. And interestingly enough, she did not shy from commenting, that it made her nervous, as she is not used to singing to empty seats. Be as it may, a true artist to the core, she soldered on, with every new song capturing the hearts of each and everyone who was lucky enough to be there that night. Further more, she even made us sing along...
To be quite honest, I also wondered, would not our stage be too big for this slender blonde lady. I needn't worry, as Mariza's personality, her ability to communicate and engage the public, her graceful, swan-like movements and, most importantly, her multi dimensional, soulful voice, piercing straight into her listeners' hearts, amply filled not only the stage, but the entire theatre. Another concern tingling my mind, weather I would be able to understand her music without knowing a single word of Portuguese. But does one need words to express deepest feelings of love, sadness, pain and sorrow? Aren't they just a secondary tool, employed only to give the music some structure. The music (if performed by a true artist) usually
But why oh why, does it not enlighten us beforehand about the artistic treats lined up in store for us, the public; and unless one has a very well developed bush-telegraph of culturally aware friends, sadly, rather too often, the said treats pass us by quite unawares. voice, it sang about love and death, love lost to death, longing, passion and, of course, destiny that is often opposite to the wishes of its owner... It is often compared to or even called 'Portuguese Flamenco', but I would rather stay away from stereotyping this unique musical genre... Fado is Fado. It not only survived the test of time, but, in recent decades, regained its fame and popularity way outside the reaches of its native Portugal. Ironically this renaissance of Fado almost coincided with the death of Fado's most famous and beloved interpreter, AmĂĄlia Rodrigues. In the public remembrance and mourning that followed, Fado regained much of its previous popularity, and when Mariza was asked to perform a broadcast tribute to Rodrigues' memory, it proved so popular, that her friends began urging her to record an album of Fado music. She did so, and in 2001 'Fado em Mim' was released (selling an astounding 100,000 copies). And the rest, as they say, is history. Mariza was elevated onto a global stage and reigned there ever since as the 'Queen of Fado'.
speaks for itself. It was impossible not to submerge completely and share Mariza's emotions as they were your very own. And after this rather lyrical narrative of the most exceptional performance, I would rather restrain from a mundane listing of all Mariza's awards and achievements (one can easily Google and read them on Wikipedia). Personally I am convinced, that everyone who was fortunate enough to see this woman perform live, gave Mariza his or her own personal prize and nomination - a fraction of one’s heart. It is impossible to be a part of her audience and to stay untouched, unmoved and not to became her life-long fan. So let's hope that Queen of Fado will hold her promise and return to Bahrain... this time to a sold out, full-house performance!

lifestyle
Aries (21 March – 19 April)
This is a month to work on your self-assertiveness. Your emotions are on your sleeve right now. It is a good time to put your needs first, but doing so with respect for others will take you further. Whether you can succeed as a leader is tested right now.
We love these pristine La Blanca diamond earrings by Mouawad. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend but also the birthstone of those born this month!
Sagittarius
(22 November 21 December) There can be competitiveness in your life now. A sudden job opportunity, or some form of assistance with regards to career, home, or property matters, could be part of the picture. This can also produce an event that requires you to take charge and show your responsible side.
Taurus (20 April – 20 May)
Capricorn (22 December –
Gemini (21 May – 20 June)
(20 January – 18 February) You express your feelings and ideas with ease now. This month will motivate you to take charge of and perhaps speed up, your work projects, daily routines and pursuit of health goals. This can be a wonderful time for taking the lead and taking action.
19 January) It’s a good time for boosting your relations with business partners and co-workers. Your ability to form connections with people who support your ambitions increases. Any troublesome issues that have been dormant in a relationship in the past are likely to surface and can now be handled straightforwardly.
The state of your inner world is especially active and at times chaotic. Try to treat this period as a time for gathering your energies and closing important projects, relationships, or situations. Your mental energies are quickened favoring any task that involves getting your point across effectively.
Aquarius
This is not an ideal time for pushing forward with new projects and plans. It is better to tie up loose ends now. Your physical energy levels may not be up to par for the time being, and this is your body signalling you to take a break.
Cancer (21 June – 22 July)
Creative endeavours could prosper now, particularly those that draw upon the emotions or that require creative visualization skills. This is a good time for research, quiet contemplation, and meditation; but do avoid getting dragged down by issues that have outgrown their worth and purpose.
Leo (23 July – 22 August)
This is a period of review, letting go and recharging your spiritual and physical batteries. Focus on fulfillment through service, empathy and awareness of other’s needs. It can also be a time of withdrawal and some sort of retreat in a social sense, depending on your personal and natural predisposition
Virgo (23 August – 22 September)
You are likely to draw sensitive individuals into your social circle. Partnership tests are possible
Details: 10.35-carat diamond and white gold earrings complemented with two diamond and white gold rings at 15.91 carats, and valued at US $770,000.
Pisces
now, but so is a chance to truly connect to a special someone in your life. Your comfort zones matter, and now is the time to take care of your own needs without eclipsing the needs of others.
Libra
(23 September – 22 October) You’ll have bosses and co-workers looking upon you quite favorably this month and easier relations with friends and associates as well. In fact, work is potentially quite excellent and far more stabilizing. Situations that have naturally outgrown their usefulness in your life can now be put behind you.
Scorpio (23 October – 21 November)
You are coming across well at work now, and romantic opportunities, or simply more chances to socialize and network are likely. You are socially ambitious right now and success may come through your good managerial qualities or some form of artistic talent, or, indirectly through your marriage partner.
(19 February – 20 March) This is a good time for getting a handle on work and health, exploring your options and doing hard-hitting research and analysis. Increased motivation is with you to seek out support (financial or emotional), make intimate connections and move difficult or taboo issues out into the open.
