Ella

Impressions

Indian artist Ella Prakash has called Bahrain home for the past 48 years. She has exhibited her work at numerous local and international exhibitions and successfully collaborated with global interior designing companies. The Ambassador of Arts For India, she realised her long-time dream of launching her online art gallery in 2004. Melissa Nazareth talks to Ella about her new brand due to release worldwide by the end of 2016.

Ella Prakash

What is ‘Ella Impressions’?

Ella Impressions is my clothing and accessories line. I came upon the idea while learning about and understanding the various art media available to portray my designs through the fashion world. Art and fashion collaboration gave me a new

26 Bahrain Confidential August 2016

perspective in terms of business and an opportunity to reach a more mainstream audience.

How is painting for oneself different from painting for a corporate interior design house? Tell us your experience.

My signature works are collaboration of figurative contemporary art. Creating a painting for any corporate interior design house is one of the verticals that would enhance an art business like mine. Creativity is the underlying statement of every artist. While I create a painting for myself, I have the ability and sole authority to decide the theme, color scheme and the message I intend to deliver. My experience in painting for corporate interior design houses hasn’t been any different. I am thankful to have dealt with clients who have given me the flexibility to use my ideas. BoConcept (London) is one of the clients I work with. It approached my gallerist Debut Contemporary in London and now displays my art pieces in its outlet.

How has Bahrain inspired and encouraged you as an artist?

I have always been well received and valued by art collectors in Bahrain, and have the deepest gratitude for this country where I

was born and raised. The Kingdom has embraced progression throughout the years, which has enabled artists like me to pursue our passion. I’m a member of the Bahrain Arts Society and it was during one of their exhibitions that my painting ‘caught the eye’ of the Saudi Ambassador to Bahrain. That was when I realised my potential as a professional artist.

Tell us about Ella Art Gallery.

I grew up in an environment where I had to fight to pursue my passion, art, because I am a woman. I longed to create an identity for myself as an artist. In 2004, launching Ella Art Gallery helped me realise my dream. I understood the nittygritty of operating an art business. It was challenging, nonetheless, crucial for me to grow as both, a person and an artist.

Noor Al Naimi at the book signing at Words Bookstore Cafe & Inset: Noor with Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed AlKhalifa

I’M A NERD

AND I HAVE A MESSAGE.. 28 Bahrain Confidential August 2016

N

oor Al Naimi is a Bahraini writer who published her first title, The Pearl Thief, last year. In this feature, she talks to us about the turning point that got her to put pen to paper. While most girls her age were worrying about hair, make-up and boys, a teenaged Noor was maintaining her personal diary. “I wrote everything in it: from the time I was 13 years old right up to when I turned 17,” says the self proclaimed nerd. On the cusp of adulthood, Noor noticed how her written rant had transformed over the years and that’s when she realised she wanted to pursue her true love: literature. To her disappointment, her decision was met by a "no" from her family. “My dad and mum have professional careers and expected me to take up something that raked in the moolah. Sadly,

people English literature didn’t fit the bill and I went on to graduate in marketing [which she believes she is terrible at] with a minor in interior design. I took up my first job at a hospital. Around the same time, I got married and had my baby girl.” It was a rollercoaster ride after that. Noor found her new responsibilities quite challenging. It was tough juggling professional and personal lives, and when she realised that her family was being neglected, Noor decided to quit. “I told my boss I wanted to write a book!” she says. "This was a turning point in my life and I decided to step up to the plate. By then I had written quite a bit and finished a manuscript too. It’s my dream book, which I intend to publish someday."

The Pearl Thief

The Pearl Thief happened when Bahrain Writers’ Circle, of which Noor is a member, decided to come out with More of My Beautiful Bahrain. “I wanted to contribute and my not being an expat would help me explore a different angle.” Noor wanted to talk about the cultural and social challenges the country faces. “Bahrain is not just about beaches and palm trees!” she says. “I wasn’t sure my views would be taken in a positive spirit, which is why I decided to address these issues in a story and The Pearl Thief was born.”

The plot revolves around Hassan, a pearl diver, who Noor says is greatly influenced by her grandfather whom she adores. “My grandfather didn’t know how to swim but took up pearl diving to support his family,” she adds. Noor decided to name her protagonist Hassan because it’s a neutral name and readers wouldn’t categorise him into a particular caste. “In the past, Bahrain was a trading port and many foreign cultures have influenced ours. That cultural melting pot is what the real Bahrain is, and that’s a message I hope to share in this book; despite our differences, we are the same.” Noor further discusses how most people see the Middle East as a repressed culture but she believes otherwise. “We’re not repressed. We’re definitely different from the Western world but it doesn’t make us any less better.”

The Next Chapter

Noor is happy with how things have turned out for The Pearl Thief but believes she can do more. That’s what most of her friends and followers of her work have told her too. “My husband is into Arabic literature more than English, but he liked my book too,” says Noor, adding that her family is proud of her as well. Noor looks forward to getting her children’s book published but is currently looking for an illustrator. She also hopes to write another book that's loosely based on a few women she has met and known.

Just before we come to the end of our interview, Noor tells me that encouraging reading, especially in Bahrain, is the need of the hour. She believes schools have an important part to play. “Read in any language, but read," she says. If you haven’t picked up a book yet, fret not! Noor’s The Pearl Thief is just the right first book you can pick! The Pearl Thief is available at Words Bookstore Cafe in Budaiya, Jashanmal Bookstores in Bahrain and as an e-book on Amazon.com

Rohini Sunderam

R

ohini Sunderam’s second e-title 'Desert Flower', which she wrote under the pseudonym Zohra Saeed, has been receiving rave reviews since its launch in 2015. This is Rohini’s second book since 'Corpoetry', which was also released in the same year. The plot is set in the 1930s in Bahrain. Noor, who knows English, wears the full hijab when she helps her father sell carpets to Western visitors. One afternoon she rushes down to his majlis, and although she wears her abaya, doesn’t cover her face. She sees Andrew, a visiting Canadian, and they fall in love. This love deepens as she teaches Andrew about the carpets. Under her father’s watchful eye they plot to elope. The book explores age-old Bahraini customs, which are fascinating to read. Do the lovers escape? Culture, suspense, romance... 'Desert Flower' is packed with them all.

hen my friend excitedly announced to me a few moths ago that she had entered Bahrain Confidential’s “Beautiful Women of Bahrain” contest, aside from wishing her the best of luck, I was left musing what a difficult task the editorial team subjected to “the judges” (the general public and their readers, who voted on a social media for their favourite candidate). As the famous British painter Francis Bacon once put very aptly, “the best part of beauty is that which no picture can express.” Haw can you see through the still, static image captured in a photograph into the person’s soul, where actually the very essence of the outwardly pulchritude usually lurks. Funnily enough, even before I knew I would be writing about this competition, one rainy afternoon at the races, I had quite an interesting discussion with the lovely Natasha Humming, Miss England 2016, on the very same topic. “Being beautiful has many facets; sincerity, a smile, generosity, confidence and an inner beauty. Inner beauty is the most important…’, Natasha said. And I could not agree more.

52 Bahrain Confidential August 2016

Needless to say, I did vote for my friend, because I know not only her appearance, but also her charming and intelligent personality inside out. However, my inquisitiveness got the better of me, and I devoured the entire list of potential candidates in a go. And what a list! Almost entire United Nations represented, Russia, Egypt, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Serbia, and Romania, just to mention a few. Amazing how our tiny, sunny island, can become home to so many diverse cultures and nationalities, how comfortably welcoming the community is, so that anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, gender or skin colour, can find a way to self-expression and an opportunity to be fully present in the island’s life. Surprisingly, only one Bahraini lady was among the selected final ten contenders, the beautiful Huda Mirza. And I must admit, I am very glad that she won. Because firstly, any of the other ladies could perhaps enter similar contest in their home countries but this is the only home the Bahraini people have. And no matter how welcoming and accommodating they are to the rest of us, we should respect and be courteous to our hosts (at least that’s how my parents

But more importantly still, what mesmerised me most, is how her inner beauty, kindness and intelligence shown through from her photographs. And even though I did not have a chance to meet Huda Mirza in person, my gut feeling is that the esteemed Mr. Bacon was not hundred percent correct…the true inner beauty can indeed steal out form the camera’s lens…. Celebrating dynamic Bahrainis and creative homegrown ideas. Melissa Nazareth sits down with Co-Founder Daneh Alrayes to talk about her two-month old project, which is putting Bahraini entrepreneurs in the limelight. You launched FeLocal this June, how has it been so far?

It’s been only two months and we already have over 40 entrepreneurs listed with us. We love scouring the island for new talents to share with the community. We have currently identified over 200 entrepreneurs to be listed and hope to grow as a family day by day. Ultimately, we hope to play a leading role in encouraging people to use more local goods and services, and to make buying locally produced goods their first choice every day.

What inspired this lovely idea?

I came upon the idea in 2011. I would constantly hear about new businesses, unique freelancers or great home businesses but never be able to find any information on them online. Back in 2011, all of the accounts were on Facebook as pages and you had to know friends who followed those pages in order for them to show up on your timeline. The whole process was complicated and one that limited entrepreneurs’ market reach. I realised I wanted to change this and started my blog ‘bahrainipreneur.com’ which focused on new projects and talents in Bahrain. The feedback was incredible, and after 5 years of blogging, I teamed up

with my good friend Salah Rushdy to plan the launch of felocal.com

BD35 get their own page with their own URL, optimised with search engines.

For the benefit of those who don’t speak Arabic, what does FeLocal mean?

What challenges do local entrepreneurs generally face?

How has it helped the local community so far?

Do you, at some point, hope to support grass root Bahraini entrepreneurs including farmers, potters and fishermen?

The word ‘Fe’ means ‘Avaliable’ in Arabic. Together with ‘Local’, it means local businesses are available, why buy from elsewhere. FeLocal is in Arabic and English, so we can reach both, the Bahraini and expat communities. It is essentially a user-friendly online directory dedicated to listing local startups, freelancers and home businesses.

People started referring to 'bahrainipreneur.com' whenever they wanted to find out about local projects. Personally, it was a huge accomplishment! I often run into people who tell me that they found out about their “now” favorite local store via my blog. With felocal.com we are aiming to give Bahraini startups, freelancers and home based businesses a presence on the web. Not everyone can afford a website, especially during the early stages. Businesses who register with FeLocal for a nominal, one-time fee of

Based on our experience for the past 5 years, reaching the right target audience is a major challenge. There are a lot of new ideas coming out every day, so businesses need to stand out and not get lost in the crowd. Registering on FeLocal will allow entrepreneurs to benefit from the yearlong advertisement campaigns we run for FeLocal and get exposed to new potential clients every day.

Actually, we already have a category in FeLocal for farmers and are in talks to get listings for it. We love supporting anyone following their passion, from any field. We also have a special section on the site for community projects including Ayadi Shop, Feed the Need and Arab Youth Climate Movement.

on’t be put off by the recent, er… shall we say ‘turbulence’, in Turkey’s politics. This beautiful country remains open to tourists and is safe to visit. Stepping off the Turkish Airlines flight knowing next to nothing of my destination I was eager to discover what awaited me in Antalya. Gateway to Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast-known as the Turquoise Coast due to its stunning blue waters-Antalya is a mere hour and a half flight from Istanbul. Reminiscent of the French Riviera in the 1950s, Antalya evokes a nostalgic

Full of charm and swaying palm trees, Antalya is the perfect place for a glitterati gathering for martinis before dinner in a white tie and cocktail dress. The Turkish Riviera has much more to offer than beautiful beaches and seafront hotels, as you’ll see from the architecture that has Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine influences. With its narrow winding streets and historic wooden houses, bars, cafes, restaurants and Ottoman-style boutique hotels, it’s a lovely place to wander around, shop in and sample the Turkish coffee and cuisine. The Roman harbour-once Antalya’s lifeline from the 2nd century BC until late in the 20th century and now a marina for yachts and excursion boats-is delightful, having been sympathetically restored during the 1980s. avid Bowie’s life as an art collector was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view. But in November this year, Sotheby’s will stage Bowie/Collector–a 3-part sale comprising around 400 items from the private collection of David Bowie including his record player of choice: a wonderfully unconventional piece of 1960s Italian design. At its heart will be Bowie’s collection of modern and contemporary British art by many of the most important British artists of the 20th century, including Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Frank Auerbach and Damien Hirst. Bowie’s famously inquisitive mind also led him to outsider art, surrealism, contemporary African art and the work of the eccentric Italian designer Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group.

ahraini musician and producer Esam Hammad aka Cosmo represented the Kingdom at the Red Bull Music Academy in Paris last year. The chosen one, alongside 61 other artists who were invited, talks to Bahrain Confidential about his latest EP (extended play), ‘Spark Matter’, which was released this July; one of the tracks on the EP was recorded during his time at the academy.

“Guitarists should step out and explore what they could achieve on modern tools with their music knowledge”. What have you been up to this past year?

Tell us more about ‘Spark Matter’, especially the track you recorded while at the academy. 'Spark Matter' contains 5 songs that I completed in quite a short time. Most of the live tracks were recorded in one take, which helps retain some freshness to the sound. The opening song on the EP, Astral Landing, was recorded in one of the academy studios in Paris. It was inspired by a lecture by Nicolas Godin, one half of the french band Air, who also happens to be a huge music inspiration. Nicolas talked about how limitations in the recording process push artists to get more creative with the tools available. Moon Safari, one of the band’s most popular releases was recorded on an 8-track. I was immediately inspired to create a song with only that many tracks. I resisted the ninth drums track, initially, but eventually gave in and ended up completing the song with double the number of tracks. But that's how it came to be.

room and hotel with 30 talented artists from all over the globe, who I am still in touch with today. The academy experience gave me a glimpse of a universe I imagined but perceived as distant. It brought me close enough to a reality I realised I can actually create for myself.

You started off as a guitarist when you were a teenager and eventually discovered there was more to music. What do you enjoy the most, though?

The guitar remains to be my instrument.. Guitarists should step out and explore what they could achieve on modern tools with their music knowledge. Though I can translate melodies and ideas from the guitar to other instruments, the guitar remains my main writing tool. Production is fun too. The endless possibilities while producing tracks on modern digital audio workstations make it very enjoyable. Once you master the process it almost becomes like playing a video game.

Which musicians do you admire?

I was recently involved in a project celebrating the musical achievements of Bahraini composer Majeed Marhoon.

Morning Mantra

The First 60 Minutes of My Day:

Stretching - A little light

stretching in the morning is all it takes to shake off grogginess and limber up for the day ahead. The best part is it only takes a few minutes!

Discover your morning routine this holiday season. Getting a head start will keep the upcoming back-to-work hangover at bay.

F

or the majority of my childhood and adult life I never considered myself a 'morning person'. I was a night owl. I conformed to getting up at 7am on workdays but didn’t enjoy it. I would get up as late as possible, skip breakfast, rush to work, and then feel like I was trying to catch up the rest of the day. This type of routine will take its toll on your physical and mental well-being and majorly impact your productivity. Now, I happily wake up around 5 am each day. Even on weekends, I’m usually up by 7 am. I’ve learned so much about how creating good habits and a morning routine sets the tone for the whole day, and if you do each day right, you’ll do life right. It started when I read The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. I knew that not having a good morning routine and feeling overwhelmed and disorganised were connected. I needed to work smarter, not harder, and the first step was to create good habits. I began

Meditate - Perhaps the most

important part of my routine is clearing my mind so that I can gain focus for the day. Since beginning the daily habit of meditation I have seen a big improvement in my focus, productivity, and stress levels.

Reading (20 mins) - These 20 minutes of reading have been huge for me. Not only are they enjoyable, but reading books on personal growth is inspiring and gets me geared up for the day.

working on 'habit stacking' to craft myself a good morning routine. 'Habit Stacking' is a way to build a new habit into your life by stacking it on top of something you’re currently doing. For example, before I brush my teeth in the morning (current habit) I will meditate (new habit) for 3 minutes. I’ve discovered the personal ritual I have set up for myself has helped put me in the right mindset. We only have a certain amount of energy and willpower when we wake up each morning, and it slowly gets drained away with decisions. This is especially true if you’re making hundreds of small decisions in the morning. Try to have the first hour of your day vary as little as possible with a routine. Knowing exactly how the first 90 minutes of my day look like is powerful, as it helps me feel in control, which in turn reduces anxiety and ensures I’m more productive throughout the day.

Goals (5 mins) - Each morning I write down my goals. First, I write down a long-term goal that I’m working towards. I write this down each day to keep me mindful of my direction so that I don’t go off track. Then, I write down the day’s targets, which are 3 things I need to accomplish to move me further toward my long-term goal. I then schedule out my tasks for the day. I always put the most important (coincidentally usually the least enjoyable) first so that I ensure it gets done. Then I begin working. I don’t look at my phone, email, Facebook, or Twitter until after I’ve completed that first big task of my day. I can’t stress enough on the importance of a great morning routine, as it will set you up for a successful day  —  and life. What I do isn’t for everyone. I experimented with a few different things and figured out what worked for me. You should do the same. Soon you’ll know what things work for you, and you’ll enjoy starting your day.
