What’s new? Flying Cars in Dubai Dubai skies are set to be abuzz with driverless flying cars this month following the announcement of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Chinese EHANG Company. Last February, the RTA announced that it had successfully carried out the first test run of an Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) capable of carrying a human up in the air. The AAV is designed to fly for maximum of 30 minutes at a maximum cruising speed of 160kph, and the standard speed in Dubai is likely to be set at 100kph. For residents, the chance to beat the traffic jams in a flying car is probably something many have dreamed about. And now it looks set to become a reality.

Feature Dubai’s expats are just as unique (and funny) as the place itself. I’ve documented 20 cliques in my book, Only in Dubai: An Essential Guide to the Emirate’s Expats.

By Sophie Robehmed

The 20 Tribes of Ex-pats

You Can’t Avoid in Dubai The Palm Posers Introducing the Palm Posers, ladies and gentlemen: a supremely satisfied species, to put it politely. Guess it’s only natural that the luxury lifestyle afforded by artificial tree-shaped islanders will bring about this unbecoming behaviour in some of them.

The Lost Souls Believe me, no other city re-homes the recently divorced, the newly single, the disillusioned, the quarter/mid/ late-life crisis-stricken, like this city. Regardless of their inner turmoil, you can guarantee that the Lost Souls will be bigging up ‘the Dubai dream’ on all their social media accounts, even LinkedIn.

The Brunch Brits The Brunch Brits are split into two polar opposite sub-categories: the Overindulgers and the Traditionalists. All the Over-indulgers care about is just how much food and bubbles they can get for as few dirhams as possible, every Friday without fail. The Traditionalists, on the other hand, most certainly do not brunch every week. Many, if not most, avoid it like the plague.

Feature The Jumeirah Janes

The Dubaiophiles

Daily trips to Fashion Avenue at The Dubai Mall are essential for the Jumeirah Jane, especially when the latest Peter Pilotto dress has just arrived at Bloomies. The perfect opportunity to give her hubby’s credit card a workout, and leave the mall looking like a million dirhams to impress her fellow JJs at lunch somewhere equally sophisticated and stylish back in Jumeirah 1, like Comptoir 102, or the ever-faithful Limetree Café for a skin-firming smoothie. After a few hours of nibbling at a salad, sipping on a juice and sharing a chocolate brownie between eight, the Jumeirah Janes bid each other adieu, driving off in the same direction, a battalion of sleek 4x4s.

For the Dubaiophile, this city can do no wrong. … Nothing gets them down, not even a lack of taxis after work. They feel far too lucky to be living and working in the emirate to get wound up by having to walk home in the searing heat, even when humidity has peaked at 90 per cent. As far as they are concerned, any minor annoyance doesn’t matter in the grand scale of things, be it a shortage of taxis, dealing with Du, or having to hoover sand off the bed sheets.

The Yogis Maybe it’s the long working hours. Or the endless potential for yoga on the beach, under the soothing glow of a full moon. Perhaps it’s even the generously warmto-far-too-hot climate that makes Bikram Yoga possible outdoors, something that is impossible in most countries. Whatever it is, the yoga scene is booming in the emirate, and subsequently, so are the Yogis.

The Media City Moguls Media City is where most of the media companies are based. For the Media City Mogul, these eponymous streets are, quite simply, the raison d’être. The very reason why many career-hungry professionals up sticks to accelerate their careers and to work in a media bubble. For the Mogul drowning in deadlines, the endless possibilities for a breakfast, lunch and dinner delivery is the silver lining amid the constant eyestrain, tear-inducing neck spasms and shakes from a caffeine overdose.

The Taxi Drivers No three questions are more pertinent to a Taxi Driver in Dubai than: 1. ‘Where are you from?’ (OK, we can give them that one considering everyone asks you that in this city.) 2. ‘How old are you?’ (Why is this relevant to our light chit-chat?) 3. And – the pièce de résistance – ‘Are you married?’

The Ultimate Summer Makeup Guide Your wardrobe isn't the only thing that needs an update when the temperatures rise.

Start with a proper base

Keep things light

After cleansing your skin, use an oil-free moisturiser. It is also important to invest in a good primer, which goes on after moisturiser. Primers hold your makeup into place while preventing it from becoming oily. You can match this up by trading your regular foundation with a silicon-based formula. These absorb oil which mean your makeup won’t melt odd even when the weather gets too hot or sweaty.

If you want to keep your makeup from creasing and caking, say it with us: Less is more. Skip the eyeliner and keep things minimal! Opt for mascara-heavy eyes that give a fresh yet dramatic look without being too obvious.

Use cream foundation as an eyelid primer To make use of your ordinary cream-based foundation, use it on your eyelid as a base to make your eyeshadow last longer. You can also opt for cream eyeshadow for their long-wearing and crease-resistant properties.

24 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

Play with colours If there’s one place you need to add a pop of colour this season, it’s your lips. Since clothing can start to get lighter in texture and colour, bright hues like fresh pinks on the lip stand out the most.

Don’t powder right after foundation Wait till you’re done with the whole regimen of blush, bronzer and highlighter before you put on a compact or loose powder. This helps cover the mistakes and harsh line and gives a more natural look.

How Meditation Might Ward off the Effects of Aging Major US study suggests meditation can protect our minds from degeneration.

A

fter several years of numbercrunching, data from the Shamatha project is finally starting to be published and one of the discoveries has stunning implications: that meditation might help delay the process of ageing. It’s the kind of claim more often associated with pseudoscience. But a new generation of brain-imaging studies and robust clinical trials by scientists from a range of fields are starting to compile evidence

28 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

that meditation may have long-term implications for physical health. There are many kinds of meditation. One of the most studied practices is based on the concept of mindfulness, or being aware of your own thoughts and surroundings. Practioners believe it alleviates suffering by making you less caught up in everyday stresses – helping you to appreciate the present instead of continually worrying about the past or planning for the future.

“You pay attention to your own breath,” explains Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist who studies the effects of meditation at Massachusetts general hospital in Boston. “If your mind wanders, you don’t get discouraged, you notice the thought and think, ‘OK’.” Small trials have suggested that such meditation creates more than spiritual calm. Reported physical effects include lowering blood pressure, helping psoriasis to heal, and boosting the immune

Wellness response in vaccine recipients and cancer patients. In a pilot study in 2008, Willem Kuyken, head of the Mood Disorders Centre at Exeter University in the UK, showed that mindfulness meditation was more effective than drug treatment in preventing relapse in patients with recurrent depression. And in 2009, David Creswell of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh found that it slowed disease progression in patients with HIV. The Shamatha project attempted to see what a long, intensive course of meditation might do for healthy people. The project was co-ordinated by

them to subject participants to tests at the beginning, middle and end of each retreat, and worked with consulting scientists who each wanted to study different aspects of the meditators’ performance. Electrodes measured the meditators’ brain waves as they completed computerised tasks to test their powers of attention. Psychologist Elissa Epel, from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), also collaborated in the project with UCSF’s Elizabeth Blackburn, who shared the 2009 Nobel physiology or medicine prize for her work on telomeres, in the investigation. So how could focusing on your thoughts have such impressive physical effects? The assumption that meditation simply induces a state of relaxation is “dead wrong”, says Raison. Brain-imaging studies suggest that it triggers active processes within the brain, and can cause physical changes to the structure of regions involved in learning, memory, emotion regulation and cognitive processing. The question of how the immaterial mind affects the material body remains a thorny philosophical problem, but on a practical level, “our understanding of the brainbody dialogue has made jaw-dropping advances in the last decade or two,” says Charles Raison, who studies mind-body interactions at Emory University in Atlanta. One of the most dramatic links between the mind and health is the physiological pathways that have evolved to respond to stress, and these can explain much about how meditation works.

neuroscientist Clifford Saron of the Centre for Mind and Brain at the University of California, Davis. His team advertised for people willing to spend three months in an intensive meditation retreat, and chose 60 participants.

When the brain detects a threat in our environment, it sends signals to spur the body into action. One example is the “fight or flight” response of the nervous system. When you sense danger, your heart beats faster, you breathe more rapidly, and your pupils dilate. Digestion slows, and fat and glucose are released into the bloodstream to fuel your next move. Another stress response pathway triggers a branch of the immune system known as the inflammatory response.

The project has taken eight years to organise and is likely to end up costing around $4m (partly funded by private organisations with an interest in meditation, including the Fetzer Institute and the Hershey Family Foundation). Saron’s team built a hi-tech lab enabling

But these responses also damage body tissues. In the past, the trade-off for short bursts of stress would have been worthwhile. But in the modern world, these ancient pathways are continually triggered by long-term threats for which they aren’t any use, such as debt or work

Bahrain Confidential July 2017 29

Wellness

pressures. “Psychological stress activates these pathways in exactly the same way that infection does,” says Raison. Such chronic stress has devastating effects, putting us at greater risk of a host of diseases including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression – and death. Epel, Blackburn and their colleagues found in 2004 that stressed mothers caring for a chronically ill child aged faster than mothers with healthy children. Their stress accelerated the ageing process. Meditation seems to be effective in changing the way we respond to external events. After short courses of mindfulness meditation, people produce less of the stress hormone cortisol, and mount a smaller inflammatory response to stress. One study linked meditators’ lower stress to changes in the amygdala – a brain area involved in fear and the response to threat. Epel believes that meditation might also trigger “pathways of restoration and enhancement”, perhaps boosting the parasympathetic nervous system, which works in opposition to the fight or flight response, or triggering the production of growth hormone.

30 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

Meditation seems to be effective in changing the way we respond to external events. After short courses of mindfulness meditation, people produce less of the stress hormone cortisol.

The researchers concluded that meditation increased sense of control (over circumstances or daily life); increased sense of purpose in life; and lower neuroticism (being tense, moody and anxious). Epel suggests “mini-meditations” – focusing on breathing or being aware of our surroundings – at regular points throughout the day. And though

meditation seems to be a particularly effective route to reducing stress and protecting telomeres, it’s not the only one. “Lots of people have no interest in meditation, and that’s fine,” says Creswell. Exercise has been shown to buffer the effects of stress. Indeed, Clifford Saron argues that the psychological changes caused by the Shamatha retreat – increased sense of control and purpose in life – are more important than the meditation itself. Simply doing something we love, whether meditating or gardening, may protect us from stress and maybe even help us to live longer. “The news from this paper is the profound impact of having the opportunity to live your life in a way that you find meaningful.” For a scientific conclusion it sounds scarily spiritual. But researchers warn that in our modern, work-obsessed society we are increasingly living on autopilot, reacting blindly to tweets and emails instead of taking the time to think about what really matters. If we don’t give our minds a break from that treadmill, the physical effects can be scarily real. n

T

he word ‘Staycation’, is an often over used, much hyped media buzzword; however, in regards to Al Areen Palace & Spa this terminology is most definitely justified. The 78-villa property was introduced as the first luxury in-villa styled hotel in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

My partner and I were hosted at one of the ‘Royal Pool Villa’s’ and the regal aura in every inch of the décor makes your entire senses scream “Wow!”

From the moment we drove up to the main reception and the smiling concierge took our bags, the stress on my shoulders started to alleviate somewhat. We were welcomed by warm staff who swiftly checked us in as a cute little golf buggy came to whisk us off to commence our #RoyalStaycation.

We were shown around and I couldn’t believe my eyes as we were shown around two king size bedded rooms, steam room, outdoor showers, private majlis (accommodating up to 10 guests) and dining room. I could have easily been mistaken for a flycatcher as I caught my reflection with my jaw wide open in awe as I let it sink in that this 740sqm of paradise was completely ours for the weekend. I think the Mr was enjoying the rare moment of silence…

After an intense period at work full to the brim of Ramadan events I was well and truly in need of recharging my batteries.

As my belly rumbled I made a swift decision to go for lunch before ‘properly’ unwinding and signature-dining venue

40 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

Al Areen Palace & Spa opened up its doors to Bahrain Confidential.

Saffron restaurant did not disappoint. A lovely lady named Apple welcomed us and escorted us to the perfect seating area that boasted a spectacular view of the resort’s grand outdoor pool. Saffron is host to an indoor water feature and a beautiful high ceiling amidst majestic shades of maroon and gold that delicately adorns the décor. We decided on some hummus for starters and I of course, decided on their signature dish ‘Surf and Turf’ and the Mr similarly decided on a steak sandwich for our mains. The grilled beef tenderloin with poached tiger shrimps proved to be meltin-your-mouth goodness and I would highly recommend. After finishing, we were harbouring substantial food babies, however, with Crème Brule on the menu I decided to push on through and boy, am I glad I did! My sweet tooth was

Feature completely smug at this point. Modern Bahraini dishes, combining elements of enticing European and Khaleeji fusion, inspire the menu. As we returned to our very own palace, the Mr was ogling the flat screen TV’s and keeping himself busy by connecting to the WiFi as I started to unpack. As I opened the wardrobes, I smiled at the white fluffy gowns and complimentary slippers. This moment was swiftly dashed as next thing I know, the Mr had figured out how to use the home theatre surround sound system, which, actually proved a nice backdrop for when we went for a dip in our very own private temperature controlled swimming pool and unwound in the open-air jet pools.

added to the Arabic ambience. The staff were extremely helpful and invited me to partake in their complimentary henna, something that I’ve never had done and I’m glad I did, as I’ve had nothing but compliments come my way since. However, Al Areen has a range of restaurant’s such as ‘Rimal’ that is house to an extensive international a la carte menu or ‘Keizo’ that specialises in Asian Cuisine.

tissue back massage. Strangely enough, I was so relaxed that I actually fell asleep halfway into my treatment – bonus! Had I not have been so relaxed after said massage and the overall 5* experience of the weekend I may have actually utilised the executive desk in our villa to actually write this editorial, but, hey! I was on holiday. n

All that swimming had forced us to become rather sleepy and with a mattress THIS comfortable and sheets unbelievably soft, who were we to decline it’s calling to nap?

Relaxing around doing nothing also has a knack of working up your appetite; so, I started to run the bath to wake me up. The bath is an art in itself in the way the water trickles out of such a grandeur feature and I was pleased to say that I could stretch out fully, which can be a rarity in other properties. The thick towels snuggle you as you dry off. The finishing touches only add to the continuous feeling of luxury and the supplied hairdryer was gratefully received for my frizz inducing ginger locks. We enjoyed Ghabga in the Al Qasr tent, which included a variety of Arabic and International dishes plus live cooking stations. There was live entertainment that

After a long lie in, we made our way to Saffron and decided on the all American breakfast on account of the hash browns, however, you can decide on an Arabic breakfast if you so wish. This definitely set us up for another ‘strenuous’ day of unwinding. We (or rather I) decided to book in for a ‘couples massage’ before we checked out. Prior to this we were taken on a tour of the spa and we were taken aback at the sheer size of it (10,000 square metres!). Buongiorno! Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s new General Manager, Pasquale Baiguera

Can you describe what a typical day in your job looks like? The thing is, with our job, we don’t have a typical day because you never know exactly what it’s going to be. The hospitality business has no routine – it is not a typical office job where you have a function and a task. Here, it’s a dynamic environment where you deal with different people throughout the day. In general, during the start of the day, you meet with the management team and discuss who are the VIPs, what is going to happen whilst discussing the events and plans. We also meet with the hotel guests and team members.

What motivated you to get in the hospitality industry? The hospitality industry, as I’ve told you is about the holidays and travel. When I was going to school, I wanted to go on holiday to different locations than where my parents used to take me. That is when my father advised me to get a job to earn the money to allow more freedom in

44 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

Feature spending and travelling to more countries. That’s what brought me here. When I finished school, I tried to look for a job in a hotel where I met a good general manager. I gave my contact details to him for a possible job vacancy and I was actually lucky because by the time I got home the same day, I got a call from him.

What was your first job? My first job was being a telephone operator at the hotel. From that, I’ve moved on to other positions and started traveling because of the nature of my work. Every position is critical and is important in the hotel. It’s like a watch:

in the watch you have different wheels, but if one of those wheels is missing the watch will not work – the same with our organisation. If one of the areas of the tech does not work properly the remaining will suffer, regardless of the position of the person. Everybody contributes to the success of the event.

In fact, you have a feeling of being on a holiday at Mövenpick unlike the typical airport hotels where you just check in and out. Lastly, the hotel is focused on quality.

At work, what puts a smile on your face? I am happy that I am doing a job that I like. I’m privileged to have been working in the hospitality industry and being able to grow within it. I’m in a nice environment where we are able to to positively influence each other and that's important. It also brings me joy that the people who stay in our hotel finds it to be a place of comfort.

What’s your favourite place to visit in Bahrain? I haven’t been out exploring yet but I definitely want to go to the Qur'an Museum because I've been told it's very interesting to visit.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

There is no elevator to success, you have to work hard.

How is the Mövenpick different to the other hotels in Bahrain? What makes it stand out? From what I’ve been able to see everybody in our team is really passionate and loves this hotel. This is very unique to us. What makes Mövenpick very special is the friendly and familiar atmosphere. Then, the position of the hotel has been done cleverly, meaning that it is perceived as a boutique, resort and an airport hotel.

not be willing to put the dedication and hard work required to succeed. There is no elevator to success, you have to work hard. And you need a bit of luck because in the end, as good as you are and as hard as you work, you need to be at the right time, in the right place, with the right people. But definitely, you have to work hard. There really is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.

Do you have any advice for people who want to be in the hospitality industry?

Like any other job, you need to love what you do. If you don’t like what you do, you should change otherwise, you may

I am Italian and I started at the hospitality industry by mistake. I am a person who likes to keep things simple in a sense that I don’t want unhealthy competition or any big dramas. I appreciate it when people are honest, fair and correct. For me what’s interesting is,having lived abroad for 17 years I’ve experienced a lot of different cultures and I have learnt to be flexible enough to adjust. One way or another, I’ve found a way to cooperate, succeed and make and maintain friendships with people that I've worked with and met 17 years back. I find a great sense of achievement in that. When I look back, I can say that I’ve contributed not only to the hotel but also to the people’s lives. n

The World’s Most Dangerous Road is in Turkey

T

he most dangerous road in the world - that has taken a toll of numerous lives in recent years - is in Turkey. A website - which searches for the world’s most dangerous routes - chose the D915 Bayburt Road as their number one. The Bayburt D915 Road is 100 km long with 29 hairpin bends. Located in the foothills of the 6,000-foot-high Soganli

Mountain, it is described as a difficult route where ‘you cannot turn at some of the bends in a single manoeuvre; this road was built by Russian soldiers in 1916’. There are no railings at the road’s edge to prevent vehicles from plunging to their doom in an accident. Parts of the road are routinely closed in wintertime due to snow blizzards and ice. The Bayburt highway is a working road

used by locals driving every form of transport. Website dangerousroads.org, who conduced the research, said: ‘Words and pictures are not enough to tell how dangerous this road is.’ After the Turkish route, India’s KeylongKishtwar Road was found to be the next most dangerous. n Images : CEN

People & Life The summer vacations are here and as usual parents, especially working parents, are frantically searching for summer camps and activities that will keep their cubs busy for the next two months. While you’re at it, try thinking of alternative options this year. Bahrain has plenty for every child depending what he or she may be interested in. The animal shelter over in Sa’ar is a summer haven for kids who love animals. Tony the Dogfather and his lovely team are often on the lookout for volunteers who can help groom the many animals living there. You can spend a quality weekend there with your little ones. Feed the Need by Michelle Bailey is great local initiative for tots who love baking and cooking. Spice things up together in the kitchen; and drive over to one of the many fridges scattered across the island where your children can stock up their creations for the less fortunate.

BAH-BOMBAH Melissa Nazareth explores the alternative summer holiday.

R

emember the scene in the novel ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ where Jem Finch destroys Mrs. Dubose’s camellias after the old woman insults his father, Atticus? Atticus makes Jem apologise, and his punishment is to read to Mrs. Dubose every day after school. When I got to that part in the book, I thought, what an enriching experience for children to enjoy and not necessarily struggle through as punishment.

Melissa Nazareth, lived in Bahrain for almost 3 decades before moving to Bombay. In her columns titled ‘BAH-BOMBAH’ (Bahrain-Bombay-Bahrain), she shares her most interesting experiences, hoping to make the world a better place one word at a time. @melnazareth

@melissanazareth

The BSPCA has a thrift shop in Budaiya and often invites volunteers to sort out donations – books, clothes and other knick-knacks. Your children will enjoy the entire process of hunting for unused or slightly used items from their own belongings, and driving over to the thrift shop with you to donate them. While there, they will love getting together with you to curate the heaps of jewellery, music CDs, shoes and other things.

Bahrain has plenty for every child depending what he or she may be interested in. The animal shelter over in Sa’ar is a summer haven for kids who love animals. ‘Any entrepreneurial venture must always have a social element to it,’ Chef Wolfgang Puck had said to me in an interview I did with him for Bahrain Confidential. What a beautiful thought! We can use this advice for anything we do in life. Our world has become increasingly competitive and obsessed with succeeding at any cost. We need to take a step back and realise that our planet doesn’t need more achievers rather more peace makers, healers, restorers, story tellers and lovers of all kinds; for this we must start working at grass root level; instead of encouraging (read pressurising) our children to pursue grades and marks, we me must equip them to develop a taste for insights, learning and experiences. This will fuel our children’s imaginations better and ultimately do us all much good. n Image Credit - Oscar Pletsch

Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.

E

h, gone are the golden days of glamorous travel, when Joan Collins was champagning whilst concording across the pond, arriving earlier than setting off without a single crease on her pristine white powersuit. In these times of "cheap" airplane tickets, we, mere mortals, have to suffer a bit of discomfort and even some mild indignity if we wish to travel by air. "Remove your scarf, Madam, and your jacket...your shoes, belt, watch, hairclip"... One is lucky to be allowed to pass a metal-detector in one's underwear. This procedure isn't too dissimilar to that of being arrested (not that I ever was, of course). Anyway, once you have successfully passed the metal gate...from the third attempt, and got dressed...again, regrettably your discomfiture will not end there. Even if you are not flying 'United" (I wonder if anyone still does), seems to me that each airline has invented their own form of torture. For instance, British Airways are always trying to match the temperature of that at the port of embarkation... in negative numbers. So, if you left Manama at a scorching +40C, you will have a chilly welcome of a subarctic -40C on board. And no amount of sweaters or pashminas will save you from a guaranteed cold or even light form of bronchitis after seven hours in this freezer. Most probably you would not even have the solace to snuggle to your loved one, as flights being so full these days, and unless you check in the very second the on-line check-in opens, your entire family will end up being scattered all over the aircraft

52 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

(with the mother of the family stoically taking the seat next to the lavatory). The same law of nature governs that your sulkiest teenager gets the seat with a broken entertainment system... inevitably.

Remove your scarf, Madam, and your jacket...your shoes, belt, watch, hairclip"... One is lucky to be allowed to pass a metal-detector in one's underwear.

And then there is a question of nourishment - although the least said about airline food the better. I always wonder who comes up with such 'clever' recipes resulting into these tasteless, gooey concoctions resembling pink toothpaste or prison food (again just a common knowledge). But these are the woes of the lucky ones who still have their airplane tickets. One hears horror stories of smart, forward-

thinking families who booked their entire summer travel itinerary with Qatar Airways way in advance, and now have found themselves stranded with only a meagre compensation (if they are lucky) which hardly would take them further than Dubai at such a short notice. So one draws a conclusion, that all things considered, a staycation this year is not such a bad idea after all. n

The Beauty of

Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Bahraini artist, Amani Al Hajeri…

54 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

A

mani Al Hajeri is a self-taught Bahraini Artist. Art has interested her since an early age and soon her talent was recognized by her family and school teachers. Being a high achiever in school particularly in science and art Amani chose to peruse a career in medicine and continued her passion in painting throughout the years. Amani believes that it is crucial for an artist to be acquainted with the basics of art and know how to exploit them in generating unique pieces that stands out from the crowd. Therefore, she’s continuously learning new techniques and styles. Amani is a member in Bahrain Art Society and is actively involved in art activities. She’s in the process of launching a series of specially designed art workshops while also working as a Consultant Clinical Geneticist. Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of this fascinating artist…

What motivates you to get up in the morning? What motivates me every morning is the joy I get from appreciating the blessings God provided us. Beauty is all around us, in our children, the beautiful dewed greenery shining under the rising sun, the thought I would help someone, the desire to take up new challenges, and the desire to pursue my dreams.

Art you know when an artwork is finished? Planning to paint is like composing a melody or a poem. It is all about observing the world within or around us. An artwork can be about anything that moves me or elicits certain mood. Then comes the stage of composing the elements of the artwork and organizing them in a way that serves the meaning and comply with the rules and basics of art. This is the most difficult part of the process. The fun part is when the colors find their way to the canvas! Once the painting reaches the stage of satisfying my own judgment I know it is the time to clean my brushes!

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why?

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I have experimented many art styles and produced different artworks and each expresses different mood, a different story and a different message. Style wise I do find myself in impressionism, because it gives me the ability to capture fleeting moments of a scene and use liberal brush strokes without jeopardizing the realism of the artwork.

What does art mean to you? For me, art is a blessing to cherish. It's a way of contemplating, a relaxing exercise, a window to breathe from, a tool to convey messages and food for our souls.

In every artwork I execute I make sure that it fulfills three essential components. Beauty to enjoy by the viewer, specific mood to share and a message or a lesson to convey. In most of my artwork however I aim at delivering a unique deep state of mind that touches the inner soul directly.

I don’t want to sound prejudiced but I love all parts of Bahrain! Even the empty desert I find it beautiful and mystic. I love the narrow paths of the old city of Muharraq, the souqs, the busy Capital Manama were the simple humble Bahrainis live along with the hardworking expatriates in sweet harmony despite their different ethnicities, the ancient villages and what had remained of the natural springs and streams, the palm gardens and farms, the surviving shores of the island and the busy roads!!!I love every single inch of this deep-rooted country because I don’t stop getting inspired by its richness in heritage and uniqueness. n

Can you describe your artistic process? How do

The Art of Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Dubai-based artist, Zahra Gulraiz.

For me art is a release. I love being surrounded by paint and colours. It's a time where I can concentrate on myself internally as well as externally through my artwork.

56 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

What motivates you to get up in the morning? Motivation is key. The feeling of staring at a fresh canvas in the morning motivates me. There is so much in the world we cannot control, the feeling of having something you can create and call your own is amazing. I think motivation and inspiration go hand in hand in my case. For example, I could go outside and get inspired by an outfit I see; the colour combination, the flow, the whole look. Ideas motivate me. My surroundings motivate me. Inspiration motivates me.

Art

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? Oh, all my paintings are my babies! I relate to all of them, but more so with the colourful ones as it shows a sense of fun and a bit of quirk. If I had to choose one that shows my character the most it would probably be the one that says "you make me go wow". That piece was super fun to create! I love being able to create pieces that could generate smiles.

of the artwork through the colours and shapes and see what they interpret from it.

How do you know when an artwork is finished? Since I specialize in Arabic Typography, I have a good sense of when my paintings

are coming to an end. My work consists of bold lines and shapes, so near the finish line, it's a matter of perfecting the angles of each line using a thick black outline. n For more information: zahragulraiz@gmail.com @zahragulraiz

What does art mean to you? For me art is a release. I love being surrounded by paint and colours. It's a time where I can concentrate on myself internally as well as externally through my artwork.

Some of your artworks were seen as thought-provoking, what do you aim to communicate through your art? I usually have a meaningful verse or a quote which I like to portray in my artwork. For example, one of my artworks features the verse from the Quran: "Verily after every hardship comes relief". I made the canvas with bright and bold colours which lifts the viewers’ spirits even before deciphering the translation of the words. I love when people try to find the meaning behind my paintings, even if they can't read or understand the Arabic language. I want people to try to pick up the vibes

A Guide to Staycations Ooooh I do love a good staycation. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy an overseas jaunt as much as the next person… And am a firm believer that travelling can make you smarter, stronger and more socially adept. However, I always find myself more than ready to head back home towards the end of each and every holiday, regardless of how amazing its been. And if you’ve got a holiday at home planned, here are a few ideas to help you make the most of this valuable time.

Plan ahead: Minutes can drift into hours, hours into days, and you’re still on the sofa, phone in hand, scrolling aimlessly. You know it. To ensure that you spend your break time in the best way possible, pop together a little staycation schedule. Nothing too rigorous, all of it enjoyable. How about coffee with the girls on Monday, dinner and drinks on Tuesday, mani/pedi and brand spanking new do on Wednesday.

that your home holiday is as tasty as can be.

Get (or keep) moving – this one’s a no-brainer. Exercise is always the first thing to fall to the wayside when we’re busy so staycation = no excuses.

Do it first thing in the morning so you don’t have time to talk yourself out of it, and try to make it a habit you stick to once the holiday has come to an end. Happy holidays beautiful people! xxx n

Zain Ramadan Ghabga, The Gulf Hotel

Beautify your surroundings: Clear off the counters, plump up the pillows, light the smelly candles, and buy yourself the most beautiful bunch of flowers: because you are worth it.

Eat as well as you can: Being on staycation is the perfect time to try out that new restaurant you’ve been wanting to visit, or to give those delicious-sounding recipes a whirl. Whether in your own kitchen or in somebody else’s, make sure

Summer. A magical time of year. Summertime is when all health crazes get together, conspire and make us all question our entire life’s choices with the bite of a single block of chocolate... In the United States, the “bikini body” is the culmination of brain activity of people my age. However, in Bahrain, the exhausting heat remains a constant source of annoyance. I make it seem like summer is terrible. Like all the season has to offer are people who judge others based upon the current beauty norms or the heat and humidity melting the very beings we are. No. Summer is not just about being uncomfortable. Summer is the moment when ice-cold water splashes against the back of your throat after the dull headache caused by the incessant heat has set in, and you miraculously feel energised and calm. Summer is the coming together of families, whether it be for elaborate trips or simply a meal shared with loved ones. In the United States, I live next to a lake that has been drained halfway due to construction on the lake’s dam. Most lake residents despise the fact that their once expensive waterfront properties have greatly dwindled in value and the resale value has been put on a 20 percent drop for the next few years. Most people, if they have any water at all in front of their homes, don’t have lake access anymore.

now visit other lakes because the ride is quite short-lived on this lake. Myself, I don’t mind at all. Since the lake has dropped, we have been able to rent our waterfront house for a fraction of the cost of an apartment in the city center. We are fortunate enough to still have lake access and since nobody wants to ride their boats around on our lake, we have it mostly to ourselves.

Maybe summertime requires reflection, maybe we should think about all of our privileges before we complain. n

Rolling Stone I have always been something of a nomad, never settling in one place; wanting to know what’s around the corner or the other side of the hill... Most of my travel was confined to Europe with trips to the United States, Canada and South Africa thrown in. So, when the opportunity to move to Bahrain arose, it didn’t need much of a thought and three months later my wife and I arrived. The move opened up a whole new world of culture to us, one we had never experienced before and the unexpected bonus of the chance to travel to places we once thought out of reach.

Then the surprise, the food. Vietnamese street food is a fiesta of flavours; never competing, never overwhelming, only harmonising to treat the palate to a display as colourful as the city itself; fireworks for the mouth. Each dish served from a small room to tourists and locals alike, seated on tiny plastic stools at the roadside; the perfect setting for the perfect meal. n

Layali Al Zallaq Ramadan Tent, Sofitel

Ever since I was a child watching TV footage of the war, I knew Vietnam was a place I must visit. Beyond the death and destruction, I saw a world of beauty and culture; buried by man’s inhumanity to man. Flying over the countryside on the approach to Hanoi, I wasn’t disappointed; the country every bit as beautiful as I’d hoped. In the distance, the foothills of the Hoàng Liên So mountains, closer to hand, water glinting in the setting sun; a kaleidoscopic byproduct of the myriad of rice fields. Vietnam was living up to my expectations and we had only just arrived.

Summer: Big Steps in a Small World Before now, the words “twentieth” and “July” had never given me so much hope…

Reason being, on July 20th if all goes well, , I will have finally completed my GCSE exams and said goodbye to the blue collars of Year 11. A big step. It always is – changing, moving forward. You can go through so much without even realising until you stop, step back, and admire just how far you’ve come. Year 11 was the year I made some major decisions as well as realisations; I got internationally published, and I began to see people – including myself – more than what was visible to the naked eye. It sounds deep and ambiguous, but this is the truth; this is life. Ask a teenager what they want to do for the rest of their life, and ninety percent of the time, you will receive answers that change on a daily basis and have no correlation whatsoever. You can’t plan life. Sure, it’s great to have some sort of idea of what you want to be – makes things easier – but unpredictability and spontaneity, sometimes, that’s what we live for. The 2017 summer is going to be the longest it’s been for a while. I’m hyped! I mean, I have no intention of opening another Physics or Maths textbook, so I’ll need something to do for three months, won’t I? This might be writing more poetry, publishing a second book, learning the art of psychoanalysis, progressing in another language (Norwegian, for instance, so I no longer require subtitles for SKAM), dyeing my hair plum, hanging out on the beaches of Datça. Like I said: I’m hyped! September brings with it many things (aside

from my seventeenth birthday), such as new friendships, relationships, memories. It’s all part of growing up, as everyone keeps reiterating. And personally, I’d like to think summer’s just the beginning.

You can’t plan life. Sure, it’s great to have some sort of idea of what you want to be – makes things easier – but unpredictability and spontaneity, sometimes, that’s what we live for. n

1. Dry roast onions in a hot pot, sprinkling water occasionally until onions turn brown. Add 10 ml of oil and remove the onion. Season and keep aside. 2. Marinate all seafood with salt, half of the turmeric, cumin, and coriander and chilli powder. Rest for half an hour. Slightly shallow fry half of the seafood and set the rest aside. 3. Heat the corn oil in a pot and add the chopped tomato, sauté until it is almost dry. 4. Add the fried seafood to the tomato together with the crushed ginger & garlic, turmeric, cumin, coriander, green chilli, tomato paste, salt, whole black lemon and chopped coriander. Cover the pot with a lid and simmer for 5-10 minutes. 5. Add the soaked rice to your pot, cover with hot water and bring to the boil. Once it reaches boiling point turn down the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Once the rice is cooked, carefully remove all seafood and discard. 6. Say ‘Aloha!’ to your new slice of paradise Waikiki Kitchen, Elite Crystal Hotel welcomes Bahrain Confidential into it’s secret.

A

rriving in Bahrain over the Ramadan period proved to be harder than I originally thought, coming from the South of England I’d become accustomed to a certain way of winding down at the end of a busy day. On the first day of Eid, after hearing raving reviews I decided that I would ‘pop-down’ to my new local, ‘Waikiki Kitchen’ in Juffair and thankfully it didn’t disappoint. As I’d never been to a Polynesian restaurant this only provoked my curiosity further. At sundown, we entered the Elite Crystal hotel and made our way to the poolside. Instantly, I was plunged into an excellent atmosphere with their live music performance welcoming me to finally relax. I’ll be honest with you, usually this type of thing would ‘put-me-off’ especially when you’re out to enjoy good food with company as it can sometimes interfere, however, the music was at an accurate tempo with well-known songs being played! Their outdoor tv screen is

86 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

absolutely perfect for catching-up on all your major sporting events and the clarity is impeccable. What struck me most was the presentation of the food and the generous yet delicious cocktails; everything was done to a fine art embracing its ‘Polynesian’ theme in its entirety. This was paramount throughout even the small things like the coasters in which they served their drinks on – it’s the small things that add up to create a ‘sound’ environment. The staff/ waiters/waitresses were all very friendly and I’ll definitely be recommending it as the perfect place to unwind. The added bonus was that the prices were reasonable and pocket friendly allowing you to choose from a wide selection of

light snacks or hearty meals, dependent upon your appetite. There really is something to suit everyone. We tried an array of different dishes, the Fish Teriyaki stood out most for me. The chicken satay was nothing short of exceptional – each stick was served in a shot glass full of a creamy satay sauce… Delicious! n For reservations, call 1736 0390 www.waikikikitchen.com

“Bon Voyage” to the healthy you

Clinical Dietician Diana Nakhle shares her tips for after Ramadan

H

ello vacation! Be it taking some time off from your busy schedule, spending time with the family back home, or exploring a new city, it’s a wonderful time to step outside your normal routine, let go of everything, sit back, and unwind even for just few days. It’s so easy to lose control of healthy eating while on vacation and it’s tough to stay fit either with an array of new exciting food, drinks and delicious temptations to try. Does the escape have to leave us with the inevitable extra weight? Studies confirm that adults going on a 1 to 3 weeks vacation put on nearly one pound the least. But it doesn’t have to be the case, as by following some few tricks, it is possible to go away, have fun and come back without the extras.

Eat before heading to the airport to avoid the fast food courts and plane meals as the trip to the airport reaching your destination can easily add up to a 1000 calorie.

Control one of your meals, usually it’s easier to practice some mindful eating for your first meal as lunch and dinner tend to be indulgent. Control your breakfast; keep it small and protein rich to keep you full and to save some calories for the other meals. This way you can treat yourself

with something sweet or have some extra carbs without feeling guilty later.

Choose a healthy option after an unhealthy meal. After you splurged in for lunch, go carb-less for dinner or order a light salad. Always ask for healthy options on the menu. If you set this tone, it will be easier post vacation to get back to your healthy routine.

Pack your snacks. If you’re out all day and have no access to food of your choice you will reach your midday hunger and you will eat more on your next meal. To resist the over eating, carry a protein fiber rich snack such as fresh or dried fruits with raw nuts or a protein bar. Stop eating when comfortable not full. The ‘on vacation mode’ is translated as everything is allowed making you forget the habit of paying attention to what and when you eat. Listen to your body, eat when you are hungry, and don’t overstuff your belly. Keep your portion sizes controlled and remember to always share your meals.

Keep yourself hydrated. It will help keep your metabolism running normally and prevent you from overeating. Dehydration is always mistaken for hunger as you end up eating when you really don’t need to.

Go easy on your drinks. A single cocktail contains loads of sugar and diet destroying calories. Count your drinks and opt for lower calorie drinks like light beer, wine, vodka soda water and have some sparkling water between each drink.

Track your activity. You don’t need a gym to stay active; usually you will move more on a vacation, just take the opportunity to walk whenever possible. Aim for 12000 steps a day. Wearing a fitness band, downloading a fitness app or wearing a pedometer helps you quantify your efforts.

Take the opportunity to relax and recharge. Good gateways reduce your stress levels and help you think about new goals to achieve in your lives. No matter what you do or where you, go just enjoy yourself. n

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Bahrain Confidential July 2017 105

Last Word Okay, now that I’ve got that tribulation off my chest is it really July already? Wow, that has certainly flown over. It seems only a moment ago since Ramadan last reared its holy head in 2016. This year I found myself becoming completely immersed in Arabic culture and I loved it! It goes without saying that I obviously blended into social situations, like a true wallflower, what with my erratic red hair caressing the shoulders of my jalabiya and everything. Due to all the events happening after sundown the moonlight acted as a comfort blanket to my usual lobster-esque skin (see June issue’s LAST WORD via our website Bahrain-confidential.com… shameless plug). One thing I do not understand is the sheer amount of waste that occurs after an Iftar and Ghabga takes place – it seems defeatist of the core principle of Ramadan, especially from all these live cooking stations.

Humm-US I

’m just going to get straight to it… hummus is THE most delicious thing EVER. I’ve always liked it, but, now I love it… hell, I’m obsessed with it. Theres no hummus without ‘us’ in it, right? Yeah, well I’m less inclined to share it and no, I’m not an expat brat I’m merely a woman who has fell head-over-heels with this chick(pea).

Jayne Green is a 20-something coffee connoisseur who can inject a pun into any social situation. We are very lucky to have her as our Editor and therefore she can be contacted via editorial1@arabianmagazines.com. @vintagejayne

106 Bahrain Confidential July 2017

Due to my position within Bahrain Confidential I’ve been extremely fortunate to indulge in a whole host of delicacies across the kingdom and the one thing I can’t abide, although I’ve tried is Arabic tea… the taste of cardimen suffocates my sinuses and makes me feel as though I’m cheating on my beloved Starbucks. Alas, with all these events I strangely enough lost weight – never a one to follow the norm y’see. I have a couple of holidays lined up over the summer period, although the thought of being away from my ‘JessiCat’ fills me with absolute dread. I don’t know what’s worse that or the fact that I’m travelling with the other half who is currently off gallivanting around Europe… JessiCat is my (now) expat-cat from England who is toilet trained – think ‘Meet the Parents’, but more on that in a later issue. Be it you’re having a staycation in Bahrain or indeed travelling elsewhere remember… suncream, suncream and, er, insect repellent. LOTS of insect repellent. n
