First of all... I recently came across a thought provoking post on Facebook. It encouraged people to focus on spirituality instead of ‘what to eat this evening’ during Ramadan. And rightly so! Ramadan feasts are simply out of this world and no one’s denying that. Our island has culinary treasures unlimited, and Iftar and Ghabga gatherings are a great way to socialise and bond with friends and family. But Ramadan is also about getting in touch with your inner self.

Shaikha Buthaina Al Khalifa showcases her latest collection of abayas and jellabiyas at Saks Fifth Avenue.

lover of all things fashion, Shaikha Buthaina launched La Morena at Saks Fifth Avenue in 2014. Since then, the brand has had a loyal fan following of not just Arab women but also European fashionistas. “The abaya has broken religious boundaries and is emerging as a global style statement,” she says. La Morena’s range of designer abayas sells at anything between BD90 to BD300 for a piece. “I come up with 20 to 25 creations every two to three months and each piece is unique,” says Shaikha Buthaina. She goes on to talk about her latest collection and tells us the highlight is the colours used. “I’ve used gold, navy blue and black. Black abayas are trending this season.” We ask Shaikha Buthaina why she chose this name for her brand. “I speak Spanish and am a fan of all things Spanish, especially their bold and funky fashion,” she says. “La Morena translates to ‘the brunette’, symbolic of most Arab women who have dark hair.” Shaikha Buthaina has a dynamic team of six women across nationalities working on making her designs a reality. She looks up to her mother for inspiration and guidance every now and then. “My mother is as focused on quality and detail as I am which is great!” When we ask her about her future plans, Shaikha Buthaina tells us she looks forward to adding tops, shoes and accessories to the line very soon. “The team at Saks Fifth Avenue has been very supportive of all my ideas and I can’t wait to take this partnership to the next level!”

h those blissful short spring months, when this sunny little island is the envy of all our friends in the far-flung countries, still awakening from the icy grips of winter. Smugly we trot, clutching bright stripy beach-towels, to our poolsides, lazily stretching ourselves, like lizards, and indulgently soaking up the abundant golden rays of the sun. Except... if a pool, in this idyllic image, happens to be a common one, the imaginary idyll can come to a halt right there; if you manage, in the first place, to get a sun-lounger that has not been conquered already (probably the night before) and draped with someone else's poolside-colours (with not a single conqueror in sight). Well, if luck is on your side, and you manage to grab the last one (without slipping on a discarded can or plastic bottle), you sink on it with a sigh of relief... and... inhale smog from someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cigarette smoke, being blown with an incredible precision, straight into your nostrils. Never mind, best to shift to the other side ... only to discover, that your

neighbour on the right is rather partial to heavy rock and chooses to play it on his ancient portable (crackly) stereo (from the era when headphones were not yet invented); and the noisy group of young people on the left of the pool, are blaring thumping techno tunes from their equally cranky 'music-transmitting-device', which inevitably leaves an unfortunate soul, caught in the midst of this cacophony, with a complimentary fast-track ticket to a long-lasting headache. Not to mention the cluster of gossipy ladies, clucking away loudly about what their husbands did or did not do (the latter, I suppose, being the least palatable of all three, as the noise level is the highest and the 'lyrics' leave a lot to be desired). Obviously, all that fades into insignificance, once the locust of noisy children 'join' us after their nap. Caramba!

In my days, when kids had very clear boundaries, no one even had to spell you out how to behave by the pool. The general set of rules applied... to respect others, to be mindful, polite, considerate, to stop doing something if your parents asked you to, to collect your litter, to respect other people's space and not to be too noisy. And if kids who will be kids, bursting at the seams with energy, choking on their adorable carefree laughter and radiating their special joie de vivre, are taught the very basics of good manners and polite behaviour earlier on, they won't need to read such articles as grownups... because their parents would have instilled the knowledge in them that they will use and admire throughout their lives...

Oh, I know that criticising modern parenting is an ultimate no-no, which inevitably leads to modern child-behaviour that no one, especially the parents in question, can neither stand nor control.

ntelligent restaurateurs always use local resources. Homegrown, seasonal ingredients not only ensure freshness but are also a great way to support the country you’re running your business in. Chef Wolfgang Puck is one such intelligent, successful restaurateur. “Entrepreneurship must have a social element,” he says.

The Michelin-starred chef visited Bahrain for the second time since the opening of his restaurants at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. After an exciting cooking class led by Chef Wolfgang Puck and his brigade, I sit down with him for an interview. Few minutes into our conversation I can safely say he is thrilled to be back. “I enjoyed

touring the farms, and fish and spice markets. Those farmers are doing such a good job with the broccoli, cauliflower and eggplant! Bahrain has some of the best ingredients like shrimps, and few varieties of fish and spices which I enjoyed cooking with." Encouraged by his love for all things local, and consistent social work, I tell Chef Wolfgang Puck about a food charity in the Kingdom (Feed The Need – read the story by yours truly in the MAY’16 edition) and how one of its founders intends to start the island’s first food bank. Will he be interested to support it? “Absolutely!” he says. I find out that Chef Wolfgang Puck looks up to his mother when it comes to the

interview days at the Michelin 3-starred L'Oustau de Baumanière in Provence. “Leftover food is more often than not shared with the staff.” I ask him for his views on leftovers and wastage. “The trick is to plan right,” he says. “Moreover you always have the staff or homeless people to feed. For instance, when my brigade cooks for the Oscars, we share leftover, clean food with needy locals.” Talking about the Oscars, he narrates an interesting (read crazy) experience he once had. “We were prepping up for dinner at the Oscars one year when the lights went out! I had to think of an idea to cook the

meat because it takes longer than other ingredients and we didn’t know when the power would return. I set up this little cooker, which saved the day!” Luckily, the power was back in 15 minutes but he confesses it felt like an eternity. “It’s important for a chef to be a good manager,” says Chef Wolfgang Puck. “You must also inspire people. It’s easier to be kind to people and teach those working with you instead of yelling at them.” That said, he is a disciplinarian, which is evident by how he leads his brigade in the kitchen. I’ve been in quite a few five star kitchens but only for photoshoots. This was my first time on the line and I was stoked! The re Asian Cuisine kitchen is immaculately designed with stateof-the-art equipment. We cooked few of Chef Wolfgang Puck’s signature dishes with guidance from him and assistance from his team. It was a humbling experience! I finish my interview with a cliché question the answer to which is far from mundane. What will your last meal be? “I would like to have white truffle pasta with a bottle of petirrojo. But I think the most important thing would be to eat a meal, even if it’s a simple one, with my family.”

Stews are a part of Arabic cuisine too and I’m curious to know how he would cook it the local way. “I can make it totally Arabic,” he says, “by substituting the paprika with homegrown curry spices.” Another dish Chef Wolfgang Puck loves is the gratin of potato, cream and cheese, which ate daily during his early
