People & Life Though I’d visit them every year, the empty nest was too much to deal with and so, they made it a point to call me every single day. No matter how much they probed, I’d give them no details about my well-being or the lack of it. If they got upset, I’d just say, “I don’t have anything to share. Every day is the same.” And really, it was. I was living life on autopilot, homesick and anxious for the most part, but that’s a story for another day. What I realised many years down the line is that my parents didn’t want to know details about my day. They just wanted to feel connected to me and talking over phone was the best way to do that. Today, I’m married and once again, my parents are having to deal with the empty nest. They call me every day and despite having matured over time – or at least I’d like to believe I have – I can’t get myself to talk to them for too long. The thing is I can’t small talk and once I give them the basic details, I prefer to hang up. My parents on the other hand hope to keep the conversation going for at least 10 minutes which usually stretches to 30 minutes or more, easily, which is exhausting. In my defence, I don’t talk to anyone for that long including my friends or even my newly wedded husband!

BAH-BOMBAH

I

woke up with a start this morning. I dreamed that I’d lost my mother. Thankfully it was just a bad dream. Long after I woke up and went about my day, the dream lingered on my mind. Maybe I needed to learn from it? I pondered harder upon my nightmare and it was only when I sat down to write this column that I interpreted its message. I’ve always been reserved, not sharing my inner most thoughts with anyone. My parents still, not so fondly, remember how, as a school girl, I never told them about the day’s happenings. This habit continued right through college. I was pursuing my higher education in Bombay while my parents were still in Bahrain.

Melissa Nazareth, lived in Bahrain for almost 3 decades before moving to Bombay. In her columns titled ‘BAH-BOMBAH’ (Bahrain-Bombay-Bahrain), she shares her most interesting experiences, hoping to make the world a better place one word at a time. @melnazareth

18 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

@melissanazareth

I’ve always been reserved, not sharing my inner most thoughts with anyone.

This morning’s epiphany was: I take for granted that I’ll have my parents with me forever. What if it hadn’t been a nightmare? Wouldn’t I regret not speaking to my mother (parents) enough? I’ve always wanted to do something for my parents. Many kids go to top notch colleges, make big bucks and support their parents. Maybe right now I can’t buy mine their dream house – I’m yet to write that bestseller which will make me a millionaire, Insha’Allah – but I can do something for them in small ways, one of the easiest being, talking to them every day for as long as they want, even if it’s not something that comes to me naturally. It’s the best gift because it’s something they really need at this point. Many of us live in Bahrain while our families are back home. Type chats and calls are about the only way to keep in touch. Even if it’s for a few minutes a day, listening to our voices can mean the world to them. Is it your parents, spouse, children or a friend who you haven’t spoken to in a long time? Get connected today, you never know how long you or they have left! n

Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.

E

ach year, before the Holy Month begins with a rise of the hilal (crescent) moon, the township of Manama is heaving with a multitude of activities: shopping malls and movie theatres are full to the brim alongside bars and restaurants. The storm before the calm, so to speak! As indeed, a serene peacefulness descends upon Bahrain when Ramadan is announced (at least during the daylight hours). This religious tradition of fasting and prayer has always been a bit of an enigma to me, and I suppose to most Westerners. Thus, with a blessing from my editor, I decided to embark on some “serious” scientific research (aka to pester my kind Muslim friends with various questions). Interestingly enough, quite a few of my interviewees compared Ramadan with Christmas, as it’s a time to be spent with one’s family. Some pointed out its similarities to Lent, because pivotal points of both are self-restraint and forsaking bad habits. But everyone unanimously agreed, that Ramadan these days is not what it used to be in their childhood. It suffered the fate similar to which Christmas has befallen, having been hijacked by consumerism and commerce. One succumbs to the pressure of buying more food than needed, purchasing loads of decorations and gifts, and then… some more food (as we do like to eat here, don’t we, even if the hours allocated for this pleasure are temporarily reduced). It’s customary to give, as charitable giving is strongly encouraged during the Holy Month. Some indeed take it all seriously, but sadly ranks of those who comprehend the true meaning and purpose of this practice are dwindling. Ramadan is becoming more of a social

30 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

and cultural obligation than the act of faith. Nevertheless, I think, we, of a different faith and cultural backgrounds, should be respectful of our Muslim neighbours. The magic dust of childhood Ramadan memories might have faded for some, but the restrictions they’re facing during the fasting hours are still there; they must refrain from eating,

However, if in doubt regarding certain restrictions, always revert to a very handy rule of thumb - common courtesy and respect to the others, and you will not go far wrong.

drinking, smoking, even gossiping and cursing, and also from “you-know-what”. Surprisingly, everyone I asked, showed an amazing tolerance, as they understand that we, foreigners, do not understand certain aspects of Ramadan. However, if respect is shown to their tradition, it’s highly appreciated. And inevitably, certain misdemeanours were mentioned. Interestingly, inappropriate clothing was at the top of the list, because if a gentleman

finds himself…enlivened by a scarcely clad lady in public, it breaks his fast against his will. Some find smoking more offensive, than say, drinking a glass of water. However, as my dear friend quite accurately pointed out, would you stuff your face in the presence of a bedridden invalid who can not eat? No. So why do some deem acceptable to partake in various sustenance in front of a fasting Muslim? Ramadan Kareem! n

The Panerai Laboratorio di Idee presents an invisible but revolutionary innovation, resulting from its continuous research into design and new materials: BMG-TECHTM. The secret of this material, which has been used to make the case of the new Luminor Submersible 1950 BMG-TECHTM 3 Days Automatic, lies not so much in its appearance – which is similar to that of titanium but darker grey in colour – as

in its atomic structure, which provides a range of very useful qualities for an underwater watch: extreme resistance to wear, high strength and great lightness. The innovative properties of BMGTECHTM provide additional features for some model rich in technical content and of unmistakable Panerai identity. An underwater instrument with waterresistance guaranteed to 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres), the new watch has the bezel with a graduated scale for calculating the time of immersion, which rotates only anti- clockwise, the date window at 3 o’clock and the seconds counter at 9 o’clock. The clear markers on

the blue dial – which has a new polished finish creating fascinating reflections – provide absolute ease of reading and excellent visibility under all lighting conditions and even in the dark, thanks to the use of two different types of SuperLumiNova® on the markers, making it easy to identify the reference points for reading the time and the length of immersion. Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Amouage’s Creative Director, Christopher Chong.

The Man Behind the

Scent A

mouage fragrances have reflected the wonderful traditions of luxury perfume creation internationally for 35 years. The brand has a global reputation for bringing true artistry to all its creations. Bahrain Confidential was invited to Oman to witness the launch of “Figment”, Amouage’s latest fragrances for man and woman, and the 10th anniversary of Christopher Chong as Creative Director. Unknown to the perfumery world, Christopher first marked his triumphant debut in 2007 with “Jubilation 25” for women and “Jubilation XXV” for men. With no formal training or experience, he is now a respected craftsman who defies

34 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

convention and pushes artistic boundaries.

Tell us a little story about yourself. Born in Hong Kong, at an early age I moved to New York with my parents where I also attained my first degree in Comparative Literature. After graduating, I moved to London to pursue a Master of Arts in Literature, Languages, and European Thought. During my academic career, I was offered a place at Oxford University to study my PhD. I did multi-disciplinary studies and was on my way to becoming an academic when I decided that the life of an academic wasn’t for me. I found London to be a real source of creativity that I was

Sheer Luxury able to tap into. In comparison, I found New York to be claustrophobic. When I moved to London, my parents were unhappy about it because they thought of me becoming an academic. That is probably one of the reasons why I moved to London, so that I could be free - free to make my own mistakes, to learn and live.

What nationality do you most identify with? I find it very hard to answer that question. I see myself very much as the person of the world.

On opera… I fell in love with opera upon going to London. One of the things I loved about

Opera gave me discipline. I had to work on my voice like an athlete.

living in London was that I met so many different people from different cultures and nationalities. London was full of eccentrics, and I discovered that I was an eccentric and I loved to be amongst fellow eccentrics. It was at this stage, that for the first time I met different opera singers and discovered I had a talent for opera. I wanted to be a Baritone but was too young to develop my voice and after 10 years of training as a Lyric Baritone through private tuition and maintaining menial jobs to pay for my passion, I realised that it was not for me.

How did you begin your journey with Amouage? It was by chance. 10 years ago, I learned through a friend that Amouage was looking to speak to an artist. They wanted someone that didn’t come from the industry. I met up with them not knowing anything about the perfume business, whatsoever so I believed I couldn’t fail. I told them my story and they became

interested. After that, they asked me to go to Paris to make arrangements for the 25th anniversary of Amouage and the opening of the Paris store. To cut the long story short, it was successful. As Creative Director, I handle all aspects of the creation and marketing of Amouage. Early in my career, I had two massive successes and many people suggested that I set up my own brand. It was tempting but I had great mentors; master perfumers who gave me good advice. There were people I trusted in the industry including the perfumers and they pointed out to me that with Amouage, I was the one creative director. Going by on my own would mean I’m one of many. I also loved the company. I decided at that time that I will always be with Amouage as long as they want me to be with them. I love what I’m doing now. It’s a cliché that disappointments lead to opportunities but that is what has happened in my life.

What is luxury? (On people referring to Amouage as a luxury brand) It’s time. It’s a peaceful state of mind.

Do you have peaceful state of mind? No, but I’m working on it… the last holiday I took was before I joined Amouage 10 years ago. I actually booked holidays but cancelled them.

What is your current pleasure? What’s the latest thing you learned to do? Four months ago, I finally learned how to cook. It was funny because my parents run a Chinese restaurant but they never wanted me to learn to cook. They said “One day, with your education, people will be cooking for you”, and so they actively discouraged me from learning how to cook. But I’ve been learning from YouTube and I'm really enjoying the creative process. n An extraordinary and beguiling perfume, Figment is the highly anticipated third chapter of “Portraits of Life”. It is an expression of elusive beauty inspired by Christopher’s enduring fascination with Bhutan, the land of Happiness, this scented work of art sublimely sings the ethereal wonder that cloaks the kingdom in his dreams.

The I Do’s Bahrain Confidential interviews the remarkable wedding photographer, Bader Alwazeer, who documents the spirited, fresh, timeless story of weddings in Bahrain and the region. What motivates you to get up in the morning? Love. Love of my family and love of photography.

What does photography mean to you? Photography is everything to me, anyone who knows me knows that I’m living photography. Imagine that you are doing the most thing you are passionate about everyday to make a living with the one you love. Isn’t that just lovely?

What do you say is your stylistic approach to weddings? I love to shoot weddings in a very natural un-posed un-controlled way, we sell ourselves as documentary wedding photographers, which means we capture the moments as it is. We avoid to interfere or change the reality. By doing this we capture real moments and real emotions that aren’t just a smile and awkward stand for the camera.

What can a couple expect when working with you? My wife and I is a team, we have a great passion and love in what we do. The couples who pick us expect from us the best quality in technical side and the best artistic vision and approach in their photos. All of the couples whom we already worked with usually feel very happy and excited about us, even before they see the photos. For some reason they love us as persons before they love us as photographers.

Can you share a little about what you aim to capture on pre-nuptial photo shoots and weddings? We want to capture love, romance, feelings, happiness, and a touch of sexiness will not hurt anyone. As I mentioned before, we hate to control the scene in front of us so we try our best to keep the bride and groom relaxed and forget about us and let them feel the moment.

What technology/equipment do you use to shoot weddings? We use topnotch cameras, lenses and lighting systems. We have a mighty camera that can shoot even in the darkest halls. We also use amazing prime lenses that give this dreamy fully blurred

Feature backgrounds and also help us when it gets really dark in some receptions. For wedding films, we use the latest 4K capable cameras and amazing stabilization equipment. We shot a wedding that was lit only by kindle lights, and even it was challenging for us the equipment didn’t have any issue capturing the real soft lighting atmosphere. When we are back to the studio we have very powerful Mac pros, calibrated screens and 4 layers of backup plan - one of them is online, away from Bahrain on a secure server. All of this is to make sure you get the best results available world wide and your photos are on safe hands.

Why should people choose Bader Alwazeer? What’s makes you unique? My wife and I studied Multimedia art & Technology in the UK and we have had 7 years of commercial and advertising photography experience. Also, if your wedding is ladies only, we assure you that the entire process will be handled by females only. The head photographer is Khatoon Nasralla, my wife, who has been trained on my hand. We also have a second professional female photographer Yulia for those who need their wedding to be covered from every angle. As Bahrainis we really understand privacy, religion and confidentiality especially in Arab countries, and we take it really seriously. n

“Diamonds are forever,

what ever in life is forever?”

- Laurence Graff

Bahrain Confidential unearthing the sparkle surrounding Graff.

Graff is uniquely positioned in the diamond industry, how is it able to position itself that way? Our clients come to us for something that is absolutely unique, something that’s never been worn before. This is why we don’t loan our jewellery or sponsor film festivals. We are at the very pinnacle of the jewellery industry and we are able to work in a different way, Graff doesn’t follow the trends. It’s surprising and magical at the same time.

What is the most expensive piece that Graff has currently offered the world? It would probably be the recently cut Graff Venus, the largest D Flawless Heart shape diamond in the world that weighs 118.78 carats. It is D Colour, Flawless and Type IIA with Excellent Polish, Excellent Symmetry and No Fluorescence - the very highest accolade a diamond can achieve. It was cut from a 357 carat rough diamond

What’s the least expensive item that someone can buy at Graff? There is a misconception that you need millions of dollars to go to a Graff store. We have a selection of jewellery that is in the 10 thousand dollars range. As well as an array of pieces in the 10 to 100 thousands range.

to open at the end of the year in Qatar. Graff has never firmly been implanted in Bahrain; we participated once or twice in Jewellery Arabia and we are now curious to see the potential. We have a good relation with the Shirazi Family (Bahrain Jewellery Centre) and thought we’d do more private shows here in Bahrain, let’s see how it goes.

and very often we have two or three overlapping. We do launches and present our extraordinary pieces to our clientele as we have done here in Bahrain. It’s all about presenting somewhere and then travelling to the next place. We have over 50 stores worldwide and each of them wants to see something new and exciting. n

On cutting and damaging It comes down to expertise and experience. I was once told that in New York there are seismic proof rooms. When you have a diamond on the wheel, and

if there are any wrong movements the stone can actually explode into a thousand pieces. It’s a risky procedure and you need nerves of steel. Mr. Graff is very famous for his risk taking and nerves of steel. Mr Graff always says that if a diamond could talk, it would reveal many stories. The historical Wittelsbach diamond which Mr. Graff bought at an auction was not perfect at first – the blue saturation was not strong enough. Graff repolished the diamond losing 4.5 carats to 31.06 carats to achieve more light and colour, whilst at the same time making it internally flawless.

When you have the diamond on the wheel, and if there are any wrong movements, the stone can actually explode in a thousand pieces.

What are your plans for the Middle East and Bahrain? The Middle East has always been important for Graff. Mr Graff has been visiting the Middle East since the 70s. We’ve recently opened new stores in Riyadh and Oman. We now have a total of 5 stores in the Middle East (2 in Saudi, 2 in Dubai and 1 in Abu Dhabi) and due

W

Some of your artworks were seen as thoughtprovoking, what do you aim to communicate through your art?

hat

motivates you to get up in the morning?

Sometimes, I have trouble waking up in the morning with motivation because I am painting till midnight. But most of the time, what motivates me is when I want to create a vision of my art. However, I love mornings and and coffee.

Describe your art style. My art style is usually inspired by cinematic scenes! I use my paintings as a platform to tell stories. I use house paint for the colors as well as simple touches of collage. I love to see multiple characters in my artworks.

What does art mean to you? Big question! I believe that art entails creativity, imagination, and freedom‌ It is being wild and strong. Art is anything you want it to be. It can be a leader. We find it hard to express many of our messages but we can communicate these messages through art.

52 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

My works mostly involve the art of portrait and it tends to be more on the expressionist style. In my art projects, I always focus on the idea of local identity and how it copes with the other near or far regions. I also reflect on the rapid changes in the East and how those changes leave an impact on our lives. The formation of our concepts is also depicted on what I create.

Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? In all honesty, this is my biggest problem. I think this part needs to be arranged because I am a very random person! This means that I don’t know when my art work will be over! Most of the time, it is just my intuition that can lead me.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Bahrain is very cozy and close to my home. I feel safe and free in areas that are full of life and art like Bab al Bahrain and Adliya. n

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahrain-based abstract artist, Yusra Ahmed.

Weaves of Memory

What motivates you to get up in the morning? Well if it weren’t for my kids I’d rather not get up in the morning at all! But jokes aside, sometimes I wake up with moods or dreams that spill over from the night before and my hands itch to paint. It’s almost therapeutic for me and a single focused session usually grounds me for the day ahead. I could say the canvas behaves like a blank Facebook post that asks: “What’s on your mind?” or “How are you feeling?” More often than not my canvas is my emotion-thermometer.

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I identify with all of my works, so I could not pick one. I think

54 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

it’s because my works reflect a fluctuating set of moods and emotions, each piece represents a different fragment of who I am. However, when it comes to international artists, I can say that I identify with the works of Claire Harrigan and Kathe Kollwitz.

What does art mean to you? Art to me is an exercise of interpretation and dialogue. I am not as interested in interpreting the natural world of forms and objects, but I am keen on exploring my inner conditions. I think this is what separates modern art from classical art. I think the artist communicates his subjectivity or subconscious onto the canvas and then puts it on display, which when displayed

Art begins a process of quiet dialogue between the painting and the observer.

Forgotten Countryside

Some of your artworks were seen as thoughtprovoking, what do you aim to communicate through your art? I am glad that my art is open-ended and that people react to a particular painting differently. I feel successful when I hear their contrasting interpretations, because that means I have engaged them, and usually I try not to reveal my own. My intention is to give hints and keep the lines of my works blurred and obscure. I want the observer to engage with the painting from their unique position of imagination and emotion. Sometimes the colours evoke a mood in them, sometimes it brings up a memory and sometimes they identify shapes or faces. It is only when I am finished with a painting that I take a step back and try to give it a name, but that name is only what I see, I hope that you may see something different.

Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? I paint whenever I feel the urge to do so. There is no reference or

Falling Inward

preconceived idea, it is an intuitive process usually accompanied by music. The music helps my hands move easily and brings out my emotions quickly, it keeps my mind in the back seat. I’m in a deep love affair with the medium of acrylic inks and I use hard tools like woods and plastics to spread the colours onto the paper. The colours have a beautiful transparency and the hard tools suit my aggressive and fast-paced style. There usually comes a point during the painting where I feel if I continue I am going to ruin it, so I try to disengage and take a step back to view it. Sometimes I leave works unfinished and start over and over again on new papers. When I look back and feel satisfied with a painting, I proceed to naming it quickly in the moment, because the next time I look at it I might be seeing something else.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I don’t have a particular place in Bahrain that is my favourite, I love it all. Although, I must say I love the sea, so the closer I am to the coastlines the better I feel. The sea has a calming and soothing effect on me and I am pretty sure for all of us too. n

The excitement to create or discover something new motivates me for a new morning, every day. It necessarily not only adheres to my artworks but may be a new recipe I try or a new movie I watch. Even trying out a new medium or technique in my art motivates me too.

There are a lot of mediums to paint on, why nail art? I am a painter and mediums keep

changing depending on my mood and liking, like from the proper big canvas to my very own nails! I love to create art on the nails which is both challenging and fun.

What does art mean to you? Art is the stillness amidst chaos for me. It is the constant factor that makes everything in this world both interesting and attractive. The idea of presenting a concept uniquely by expressing oneself is art to me. Art is therapeutic too, I feel.

Art

What is the difference between painting on canvas/paper and painting on nails? Nail art is challenging yet fun as the tiny canvases like nails need precision details to bring out the best of nail arts which involves fair amount of time and focus.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? It is in 2012 after moving to Bahrain I began my journey into arts. I have found inspiration from life around me here including the many must visit places like the beaches and tree of life. Old parts of Bahrain intrigue me too for the local people and their culture. I like to capture the many moods of this island in my paintings and it is here I found solace in my art. n

Consider others before yourself In grade four, a new girl in the class was seated next to me by our teacher. We could not have been more different… She was brown-skinned and the first person I had ever met of the Islamic faith. I was a white girl who got dragged to church every Sunday without comprehension of religion yet. We became fast friends. I remember how people would look at her with disgust when she turned down birthday cake from that one kid whose mom always goes overboard with classroom parties. I remember how people would eat food in front of her with exaggerated sound effects to try to tempt her to eat. I remember the cruel, Islamaphobic names they called her just because she was different. Ameera knew the importance and significance of Ramadan, even at such a young age. A few years ago, when I moved to the United States, I celebrated a birthday in June. I invited my good friend and neighbor, Mohsen, to my party. He politely declined without reason. With my feelings a little hurt, I walked over to his apartment to demand a “real” reason for his absence. He did not want to join in the festivities, because he knew that I always prepared an exorbitant amount of food for my guests. It finally dawned on me that it was right in the middle of Ramadan and that I was being extremely insensitive.

day and people take things a bit slow, I smile at myself and others for being so ignorant of things that are important to some. I join the party after sundown and enjoy the magical wonders of Ramadan. I will never forget that little girl who was so strong and true to her faith, that she would not even let rude peers pressure her into breaking her fasting.

Sun, Sand and Ramadan Bahrain, the land known as 'Two Seas', is itself a fusion of sweet and salty authenticity. It is a land where minds are taught to survive the odd conditions... Simultaneously, it is also a place where one's dreams get to savour reality. Although it is a land with harsh climatic conditions, it is filled with warm greetings. In a land that against all odds, successfully flourishes, Bahrain is able to mesmerise anyone the moment he or she is exposed to its essence. Having experienced the reality of this fusion, the escape from it becomes secondary. Known for its high temperature, Bahrain is a place where necessary precautions are needed. The need to follow these measures in order for people to escape the heat is increased with the month of Ramadan approaching. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, including increased offerings of prayer and recitation of Quran for spiritual rewards to be multiplied. It is a month of self-discipline where people refrain from consuming food and drinks from dawn until sunset as well as disengaging in any wrong behavior trains us to focus our vision and to be steadfast. I made an interesting discovery, that the word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root Ramiḍa or Ar-ramaḍ, which means scorching heat or dryness. This sparked my curiosity to check on the benefits of heat. The first thing that comes to any mind when hearing the word heat is how to beat it,

66 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

thus neglecting the fact that all experiences in life have a purpose behind it. As humans are responsible for their physical and mental well being, the responsibility also branches out to our surrounding environment that we all come in contact with. The purpose of life that gets pushed to the subconscious side due to our daily rush, gets revived with the coming of Ramadan. The toughest fight no doubt is with our own selves, which one can accomplish with a saying,

"if you can't do great things, do small things in a great way." n

A visit to Bahrain Military Museum Pieces of mechanised artillery greeted us, as soon as we entered the Military Museum in Riffa. A quick demo by a friendly BDF soldier… And I was atop the Armoured Fighting Vehicle, with a 78mm gun, in no time, surveying the passing vehicles like a victorious warrior. “Warfare seems to fascinate you,” remarked Mita, perhaps a wee bit disappointed over my avid interest in armaments and men in uniform.

“It is not warfare, but the courage of those who fight to defend their country that overwhelms me,” I corrected my softhearted wife. The charming receptionist at the entrance to the museum explained to us, briefly, the layout of the two-storied museum that housed weapons as varied as rhinoceros-hide shields brought to Bahrain by Africans, swords made out of finest Damascus steel, Portuguese muskets and modern automatic rifles. The giant wall paintings in the main hall, as soon as we entered the museum, transported us back to an era more than two hundred years ago as they re-enacted battle scenes with other regional powers. Even Mita was captivated by the colourful paintings of flaming battleships and warriors clashing in the shallow waters of Juffair. Sound effects that accompanied scenes of war exercises, depicted by life size models of presentday soldiers in battle gear, sent my adrenalin racing. I could almost feel the heat of battle, as I crouched next to the men

deciphering radio messages inside a tent lit by a kerosene lantern. Models of helicopter gunships and fighter jets, as also those of war-ships guarding Bahrain’s waters and missiles, made up an awesome sight. The Documents Room was a treasure trove of information on Bahrain’s history over the last three centuries. Intricate models of the island’s forts did well to bring to light what these structures, which we know as the Police Fort, the Arad Fort, the Bahrain Fort and the Bu Maher Fort today, once looked like.

Pre-Ramadan Gathering Guests had a lovely night during the Pre-Ramadan Gathering at Le Sauvage, The Domain.

Standing right next to Sheikh Salman bin Ahmad Al Fatah Fort, commonly known as Riffa Fort, the Military Museum had beckoned me since long. I was glad to have visited it finally, for the place displays Bahrain’s heritage and present day defence capabilities with a precision and splendour that is awe inspiring. n

Ramadan Reflections Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, is a time to introspect, ponder and look deep within oneself… It is a time to put aside our normal indulgences- be they food, drink or smoking- and overcome our vices, like gossiping, backbiting or impatience. It is, of sorts, an annual spiritual training camp, when our focus shifts from mere worldly pursuits and fulfillment of our bane desires to a higher, metaphysical level. Abstinence and reflectionaccompanied by more prayers, repentance and gratitudeall serve towards fortifying our souls and enhancing an awareness of our spiritual realm.

Contrary to popular belief, fasting is not just staying away from food or drink for several hours a day. In actual fact, it is an intensive exercise in ‘self control’ in all aspects of our existence; from watching our manners, speech, conduct, to managing our time and prioritizing worship as most important. Additional prayers -both individually and in congregation (known as ‘Tarawih’)- make Ramadan a month of intensive meditation. Pride of place, throughout this blessed month, is the recitation, reading and contemplation of the Holy Quran, the sacred text Muslims unanimously believe is the direct Word of God. In actual fact, Ramadan is a celebration of the Holy Quran, which is a Guidebook and manual on how to live a pious and

70 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

successful life. As stated in the Quran: “The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, and as clear signs that show the right way and distinguish between right and wrong. So those of you who witness the month must fast in it” (2: 185). Eid ul Fitr is the culmination of the month-long spiritual training we know as Ramadan. Quite like a graduation ceremony, the Eid festival is a happy celebration of our hard work and efforts. Celebrated with social gatherings, festive food, new clothes and exchange of gifts, it marks the first day of the new (10th) month in the Islamic calendar.

Portuguese National Day Dinner The Portuguese National Day was celebrated with a dinner at The Royal Golf Club.

Health

After a month of fasting,

What’s next?

Clinical Dietician Diana Nakhle shares her tips for after Ramadan

H

ere it goes again! The challenge to continue with the new healthier you. Every year, Ramadan marks the chance to eliminate unhealthy eating patterns and gain control over our food habits and cravings. Many people gain self control and discipline during this month, but others slip through the cracks and tend to indulge in many goodies that Ramadan offers. If that’s the case, do not let your “fasting” turn into “feasting”. Think about it that way; how come you are able to control long hours of fasting but as soon as you break your fast you choose to overeat?! Remember that you have 30 days of fasting, so choose to be determined and give your overloaded digestive system a break on most days of the Holy month, to make room for some indulgences for the rest. When it comes to holidays and Eid gatherings, no matter what your background is, food is always the center of interest. However, you are happy with what you’ve achieved this month as weight loss, control, and spirituality. Do not let the holiday feast deviate you from your plan. It’s important to remember why you made the pledge in the first place so that when, for example, your subconscious tells you to dig in the sweets as soon as they are

served, you can pause, and rethink your choices instead. It’ll take an average body a couple of days post Ramdan and Eid to reset its parameters of sleeping and eating habits. A good way to start is to eat small portions until the body readjusts to the new routine. The slower you eat the better, so you are aware of your satiation level while you eat.

An important habit to reestablish is proper water intake. Make water your new best friend! Focus on getting the bad out and the good back in. Load up more on veggies and fruits. You will ensure that you are getting all the vitamins and fibers, feel more energetic, and loose the bloating feeling post Eid.

An important habit to reestablish is proper water intake. Make water your new best friend! Drinking more water flushes out excess sodium and toxins to help you quickly de-bloat. Get enough rest and treat yourself to a good night’s sleep to allow the body to ease into the old rhythm again. To bring back the energy and balance into your life, get back to your exercise routine gradually. In case you’ve missed your workouts during Eid, start off easy and walk your way through your regular fitness regime. As Ramadan is the month of ritual fasting and strength of mind, avoid returning to mindless health and old eating patterns. Carry on your health and wellbeing journey. Stay motivated with positive selftalk; pat yourself on the back for making wiser better choices, as every time you do, you are one step closer to the best version of you! n

Ramadan Kareem at Al Manzil! From fasting to food coma? Here are some tips to avoid overindulging during Ramadan.

F

asting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam that is meant to discipline the ego and purify the mind, body, and spirit along other innumerable reasons. Fasting is not an easy task, nor it is meant to be. Here are some tips to ensure you enjoy a moderate Iftar and Ghabga.

Remind yourself to not go out of bounds Ramadan is also the season of lavish table spreads and copious amounts of food. It is fulfilling to quench your thirst and eat to your heart’s desire after a long day’s fast but a little more self-restraint may come in handy.

“Eat and drink, but be not excessive” With so much mouthwatering delicacies on offer, people can find themselves eating beyond their needs. Start small and take a break before having the rest of your meal. The consequences of overeating include indigestion, heartburn, bloating, belching, nausea and a lot more.

Slow down Break your fast slowly and don’t overindulge. The pressure to shove down as much food as you can may be the sudden frenzy around the table. Savour every bite and chew slowly: remember to eat gradually and give time for your body to digest the food.

Moderation is the key Make this month an opportunity to moderate your eating habits. Healthy eating is a challenge that should be dealt with responsibly during the Holy Month. n

It has an end-to-end screen that spills over the phone’s sides, forming a completely smooth, continuous surface with no bumps or angles.

Boundaries Removed Samsung revealed its long-awaited iPhone killer.

Prying eyes are not a problem because of the S8’s iris scanning feature which mean your phone and its contents open to your eyes only. It also comes in handy when you need to unlock really fast. Additionally, the device is driven by the world’s first 10nm processor and is rain and dust resistant with IP68 performance. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a new beginning for flagship phones. It crams a huge screen into a compact body without sacrificing features such as water resistance and expandable storage, all while taking the design to the next level. n

• Avoid cigarettes and smokeless

tobacco, which are known to contribute to gum disease and oral cancer.

• Visit your dentist regularly for

cleanings and exams. This is one of the most effective ways to detect the early signs of gum disease.

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Bahrain Confidential June 2017 105

Last Word Factor 50 sunscreen adorns every part of me – Mammy Green would be so proud! The coconut smell evokes nostalgic memories of visiting the English seaside where I would be lathered in the stuff. However, Bahrain doesn’t have the donkey rides that I had become accustomed to as a child or even the fish and chips for that matter. I’m inundated with remarks concerns on a daily basis that I’m burnt and further put through the Spanish inquisition as to why I go so red? Rather racist if you ask me… I find myself in constant conflict with my wardrobe also. Do I wear tights and fear overheating? Or worse, do I go without tights? Albeit, with the caveat of having to shave my legs so as not to be shunned from society. Now, how do I battle against my love/ hate relationship with air conditioning? This can be in the house, supermarket or indeed the car but it does ‘anarf get on my chest no matter which way I try to tweak it. To put it simply, I am always cold and I’m a self-proclaimed ‘nanna at heart’ who needs to be forever snug. When I’m complaining about the temperature it’s probably enough to bring on earache to innocent bystanders in a 10 mile radius.

A Walking

Lobster

I

knew that the Middle East is hot, but jeez, can someone upstairs not alter the thermostat? Don’t they know the constant daily struggle that I’m facing as my upper lip reenacts a salty waterslide, eradicating all signs of my artistically placed foundation? I don’t know about you, but I am finding that I am eternally cradling talc and dry shampoo as a necessity to stop flat-fringe syndrome.

106 Bahrain Confidential June 2017

A few years ago I holidayed in Kos only to be molested by a multitude of mosquito bites. This may have been a comical story to tell the future grandchildren had it not have been for the fact that my face ballooned up to something reminiscent of an elephant. This required an emergency cortisone injection directly in my bumcheek, c’est la vie! Why am I holding on to this particular memory and how is this relevant to my life in Bahrain? Well, I thought you’d never ask! I have slowly but surely been eaten alive by such pests. However, strangely enough they have predominately chosen my left leg to have a feast on. Left for love and all that jazz… The antihistamines seem to be keeping any further reaction at bay. Phewf! So, if you see some ginger-haired English rose hiding in the shadows embracing her inner vampire, please spare a thought, or, at the very least one of those lovely shaded umbrellas. n
