First of all...

Acting Assistant Editor: Melissa Nazareth

Let’s start this month’s comment with what can very well be a rhetorical question: Do you need to set aside a day to celebrate women? It’s a thought most of us have pondered on at least once in our lives, but few of us have managed to get an answer to.

Editorial & Contributors David Hollywood John Ridley Maria Sorger Angela McDonough Rita Moussallem Nadine Compton Craig Heslop Abdul Wahab

We celebrate not only International Women’s Day but also Middle East’s Mother’s Day this month. While it’s great to express our appreciation and love to the special women in our life, have we, thanks to marketing gimmicks, pressured ourselves into believing that if we don’t celebrate it in the conventional way – expensive dinners and gifts – we are ingrates?

Layout and Design: Mohamed Nada Photographer Shareef Panhatt

Not all of us can afford five-star meals and diamonds. But all of us can manage to share words (and actions!) of gratitude and encouragement. Go ahead and make her a cup of tea this women’s/mother’s day, tell her how beautiful she is, do the laundry instead of waiting for her to do it, spur her on to achieve her deepest desired ambitions… you’ll have celebrated the very essence of a woman in much more fruitful way than you know!

David Hollywood asks us to consider how our ambitions change as we mature and grow older, and how important it is during life to hold onto the hopes of youth because they are unaffected by anything other than enthusiasm. Does age show wisdoms yearned for? Earned! Is life just guidance in disguise? And work is nothing more than years, Of ideals lost, to all our fears, Does time exhibit what we learned? -As wasted hopes, ambitions spurned? -In favour of deluded dreams! Envisage what tomorrow means? If sights will weep before they send, An image of the life we end. But what is left, If youth has sung, Of stories which forever long, To live in hope, because their young, And see adventures overcome the darkness, as the years appear, To sweep our lives past something flung, Into the light that glows so bright, Intensified desires, we might Just overcome! Before we’re none!

MY BAHRAIN

Michelle Bailey, living in Bahrain, is the founder of Feed the Need, an initiative to help feed the hungry on the island. I love Bahrain because…

Firstly, because I met my husband here and secondly, because of the welcoming hospitality of the Bahraini people. We’ve made it our home for 11 years, started our consultancy business 10 years ago and are raising our children here. Bahrain is home and so much of our family memories are woven within its rich tapestry.

My motto in life…

It is what it is. All things are difficult before they become easy.

3 things I can’t live without…

Good health, my family, my mobile phone

I’m currently reading…

The Tao Te Ching. More accurately re-reading it. Along with The Road Less Traveled. Both books have travelled with me around the world for the last 25 years.

My typical weekend is…

Michelle Bailey

Favourite restaurant on the island…

Emma Wash on Budaiya highway. Simple, wholesome Bahraini food at its best.

20 Bahrain Confidential March 2016

Feed The Need has inspired me in this way…

Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come. Over 10,000 people have been inspired to join our group to help alleviate hunger, educate about global food wastage and above all else, help others by giving themselves the gift of giving. Spreading love is inspirational.

The weekend is the only time my husband is with us so we stay close to home. Friday is family day full of lazy mornings, family cuddles and slow breakfasts. We head out to a restaurant for a meal and return home to games or a movie with the kids. Saturdays we catch up with work for just an hour and then get back to family fun.

You can get in touch with Michelle on mbailey@ feedtheneedbahrain.com

60 SECONDS WITH RUSSIAN FASHION DESIGNER

OLGA VILSHENKO

Olga Vilshenko grew up watching her mother, who created beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces for her family. She later pursued a degree in Fashion at the Institute of Fashion and Art in Russia, eventually supplementing her study at London’s Istituto Marangoni. Bahrain Confidential caught up with the creative entrepreneur when she visited Bahrain to launch her latest Vilshenko Resort ’16 collection at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Tell us about your new collection

to bring them the Vilshenko Resort ‘16 collection.

For the Vilshenko Resort ‘16 collection, I really wanted to capture the mood of free-spirited elegance in relaxed, romantic and feminine silhouettes. Fine French cotton and lace are adorned with watercolour roses and floral embroideries in a sumptuous spring colour palette, weaving the brands signature Russian aesthetic though contemporary silhouettes and versatile separates.

What do you love about Saks Fifth Avenue?

What inspirations do you draw from Russian culture while creating your designs?

This season, my must have piece is a floral printed prairie dress, feminine, light and elegant for the summer months. My favorite is the Francois watercolour roses print dress from my Resort ’16 collection. I will also be wearing the Heather French embroidered blouse with jeans for a more casual look, or with the Marianne embroidered skirt.

I take much of my inspiration from my native Russia, including culture and art to traditional embroideries and costumes. I have always been inspired by traditional Russian folklore. We combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques to create looks that really resonate with today’s woman.

Why Bahrain?

Bahrain is a new market for us, that we are very excited to be a part of. Bahrain has such a wonderful rich heritage and culture, and Bahraini women are known for their love of style, so we are thrilled to be able

An Icon of the Music Industry and a fan of Bahrain!

32 Bahrain Confidential March 2016

cover story

We managed to catch up with Sonique recently, whilst in UK preparing for her return to Bahrain during the Formula 1 weekend. Always bubbly and full of fun, we decided to take the plunge and probe a little further into her life, career and to find out what makes her tick.

mixer. With Sonique going from strength to strength as a DJ, her voice broke free from behind the decks and she released a series of hit singles. The best known of these, ‘I Put A Spell On You’ and ‘It Feels So Good’ were rapidly followed by her first solo album ‘Hear My Cry’; the rest is history!

Born as Sonia Clarke and raised in North London, Sonique's formative years were infused with the sounds of her mums's record collection. Every Sunday the house would be filled with the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Otis Redding and Denice Williams. "That was the day for loud music, cleaning and nice-smelling food being cooked", she recalls fondly. "Music is something you're born with," says Sonique. "I've always had this thing in me for music. The first record I bought was Donna Summer's - I Feel Love, and that was the beginning of my life and my musical experience. It reached a part of me that other things didn't. I immediately knew that this was the music I liked, and have never deserted it“, she says.

Bahrain Confidential (BC): Who has inspired your work most, male and female, and who were the most influential in helping you during your career? Sonique: From a musical point of view, it would have to be Donna Summer and Mark Moore, whilst in my DJ career, Carlos Diaz and Carl

BC: You always look like you're having such fun when you are performing. Are you? Sonique: I am lucky enough to do a job that I really enjoy and celebrate that every time I play for an audience. It becomes a happy marriage between me and the party-goers, fueling my enthusiasm which I hope transfers to those that are listening. BC: What would be your advice for our up and coming artists, DJs, singers and musicians, here in Bahrain, wanting to make a career in the industry? Sonique: My main advice would be to make sure you really love it, because it, like most artistic careers, it has its ups and downs. As long as you love music more than anything, that will keep you going when the times get hard, if not, it will just emotionally wipe you out. It’s also a highly competitive industry, so you need something to keep you motivated – just love it!

Music is something you're born with. I've always had this thing in me for music. The first record I bought was Donna Summer's - I Feel Love, and that was the beginning of my life and my musical experience.

Spending her early years training to be a pentathlete, a casual remark from a youth-worker about her beautiful voice, began to change her life. Five years later, as a struggling artist, Sonique had her first real break with Mark Moore, writing and singing in his band S‘Express. Mark, a profound influence, made the life changing gift of a set of turntables and a

Cox; both foundation stones of the Ibiza scene where I truly learnt my trade; I have a lot to thank them all for. As an influencer, I think it would have to be my great friend John Kelly, one of the top 30 DJ’s in the world every year since 1995, who taught me how to concentrate behind the decks when the world is going mad around you! BC: As one of the first well-known female DJs, did you get any hassle from your male counterparts? Sonique: I didn’t get much hassle, as you put it, but certainly got “that look”, to say what does she think she’s doing up there! But once I’d started, and they were all dancing, the look turned to a smiling acceptance!

BC: This will be your second visit to Bahrain, what did you enjoy most during your first trip here? Sonique: I just met such lovely people. The people are just amazing, the party was equally so and everyone has a place in their heart for music. I also had a lovely time being shown around the country, even visiting the Mosque. It was great to see some the local culture and understand the religion a little and I am really looking

cover story forward to coming back during this special weekend in April. BC: You always seem to be flying all over the world and performing. What drives you to keep going at this pace? Sonique: Passion. It is hard to say no when you are doing something that you love and that people want me to do. Again, it’s more like a marriage, I need to do it. Now, let’s head for the next party! BC: What are the plans for the coming year? Sonique: Certainly to take it a little easier than last year, which was manic, and I have decided that I would like to see more of the Middle East and Asia as last year I spent so much time in Russia and it would be nice to see some sun once in a while! Throughout her life, Sonique’s philosophy has been ‘Be the best or don't bother’. With her music career, she's certainly put that into practice and, thankfully for all of us, continues to do so! Sonique will be performing at the “Speed of Sound” event at the Art Rotana in Amwaj on Friday 1st April.

interview

THE NINETY-NINES INC. When we first heard of it, we thought, intriguing name! Well, it symbolises the 99 charter members who were part of the organisation in 1931. Founded in 1929, the Ninety-Nines Inc. worked hard to grow and sustain itself, and today, is an international organisation of licensed women pilots across 35 countries. The group’s Arabian Section was founded in 1989 by twelve members based in Saudi Arabia. Currently, Alia Twal, the discovery of Yvonne Trueman, one of the founding ladies, is the Governor of the section whose sole motive is to promote the advancement of aviation through educational scholarships and mutual support while honouring the groups unique history and sharing a passion for flying. Bahrain Confidential speaks to Alia Twal about her experience.

What do you most love about flying?

Science, freedom, beauty, adventure: what more could you ask from life? Aviation combines all these elements I love. There is science in each curve of an airfoil…in the color of the exhaust flame; there is freedom in the unlimited horizon; beauty in the brush treetops with the birds, leapt valleys and rivers, and adventure in each puff of the wind.

How does being a woman and trained pilot influence your role as Governor?

Alia Twal 40 Bahrain Confidential March 2016

It wasn’t easy reaching where I am today and the goal is to never stop. I promised myself to help other women fulfill their dream or at least teach them persistence. I want to unite women pilots; we were just 21 members when I took over and today are approaching 99 – we are the largest overseas section. Being a trained pilot has helped me to separate my emotions when I’m understanding something or acting upon something.

What challenges has the Ninety-Nines Inc. helped female aspirant pilots, overcome?

In addition to offering networking opportunities and professional guidance, the ninety nines has been a launchpad (pun intended) for many aspirant women pilots’ careers to take off. Right from helping them to obtain their licenses to educational scholarships, the organisation does it all.

How has the attitude toward women pilots evolved over the years in the Middle East and the world?

In the past, many women have had to prove themselves and the battle was twice as hard. But thanks to those, strong, determined people, young women today have the opportunity to consider aviation as a profession. The Middle East has vast talent and there are many who are headed toward change in mindset I am happy to be part of this change.

Do women build barriers for themselves, career and otherwise?

I believe, yes. Women are dreamers but often drift away from their dreams, not fighting enough or giving up too soon or sometimes, being carried away with other responsibilities. Many a time, there are culture barriers too – that said, we have fine examples of female pilots working in countries like Sudan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. The world is opening up to the idea of women pilots and so should women. When you’re up there, all you have to be able to do is perform, fly – as long as you can do that, you’re good!

A successful scholarship story you’d like to share.

In 2014, Joline Rukkab became the first Arab female to win the Amelia Earhart Scholarship from the Ninety-Nines Inc., and went on to successfully complete her flying education too.

interview A few members of the Arabian Section of the Ninety-Nines Inc. share their thoughts.

many religious and social norms that were against me pursuing my dreams.”

Waad Aldoseri, Bahrain

Samar Osman, First Female Sudanese Pilot “I come from a traditional background where women can sometimes feel like a bird in a cage. Flying gave me my freedom and strength. I was denied line training despite passing my check ride, because I’m a woman. But thanks to my instructor’s sacrifices to the point of his resignation, I was granted my license.”

Wedad Shujaa, Syrian “My dad, a pilot too, inspired me and my older brother to pursue careers in aviation. It was not easy convincing my dad to let me do this because he knew how unforgiving this industry is. I’ve had to prove myself not only to men but even a few women that women can be successful pilots.”

“I was always unsure of whether or not I’d be able to juggle my roles as a wife and mother, and a pilot. But something kept drawing me to my dreams and here I am, Senior First Officer at Gulf Air and Vice Governor of the Ninety-Nines Inc.. It’s a challenge every day but I’m willing to take it on!

Lale Caner, German based in Qatar Tanya Bizri, Lebanese Samar Oran, Second Female Jordanian Pilot “Flying challenges me enough to keep me motivated to overcome all obstacles. Juggling family as a wife and mother, and then as a single parent, with my career has been tough. I’ve also had to fight

“My most prized moment as a pilot was the first time I was at the controls. I was zooming down the runway and all I could think was, WOW! While there have been obstacles, I’ve also met many men and women who have been supportive, so, I’d say, block out the negatives and embrace the positives.”

About Yvonne Trueman Yvonne Trueman is 80 but that doesn’t stop her from taking to the skies! She joined the NinetyNines Inc. in the early 1970's and assumed the role as Governor of the Arabian Section when it was established in 1989. Though she has currently given up her duties, Yvonne has flown to most continents in the world and has British, New Zealand and American Private Pilot license not to forget the seaplane license as well. Her late son Captain Julian Pooley - a helicopter pilot - was killed in 1984 and Yvonne started the donation of Yvonne Trueman Scholarship Foundation with $10,000 in his memory. This year, the King of Bahrain, HRH Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa awarded Yvonne Trueman at the Bahrain Air Show for her devotion to the world of aviation.

“Being in the cockpit is a daily challenge, even today, and as a woman I need to perform twice as much to prove myself. But having the freedom to escape to different places makes me feel special. I’m a big fan of the F-16 Fighter Jet and would love to fly it someday (wink!)!”

Tatiana Burge, Born & Raised in Saudi Arabia “What I love most about flying is the freedom. That said, there have been challenges like, the more successful I became, the more I was told that the reason behind my achievement is that ‘I’m a girl’ and I don’t deserve it. It took a lot of courage to drown those voices and not believe them to be true.” For more info, visit www.arabian99s.com Bahrain Confidential March 2016 41

interview

SKINNY TIP

The weather is changing and it’s time to step up your skin care regime. To help you with that, we bring you professional advice from Dr Noor Jameel Almozan, Dermatologist at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital. Tell us a little about yourself.

I graduated from Al-Mustansyria School of Medicine in Iraq in 2007 and did my Masters in Clinical Dermatology in the UK in 2011. I got a Fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology from Mount Sinai Hospital in the USA in 2012. Before practicing in Bahrain’s private hospitals, I’ve worked in hospitals in the UK as well as the USA. My experience ranges treating different skin conditions including psoriasis, eczema, acne vulgaris, melasma, and bacterial and viral skin infections. I’ve also handled cases related to hair loss and facial rejuvenation with fillers, Botox, PRP, Mesotherapy and peeling.

What are the common skincare faux pas in this part of the world?

The most common skin care mistake is not using sunblock with proper SPF protection. The Middle East, specifically, has very strong summers and Bahrain too is a sunny country, which is why sun protection is a must. Not removing makeup properly or sleeping with makeup on, and not drinking enough of water are other issues.

Your tips for day-to-day skincare?

My advice to every woman is to invest in her skin and beauty by moisturising properly. Choose the right moisturiser for your skin type, use sunblock, eat healthy, and practice sports or any form of physical activity at least twice a week to have healthy, glowing skin.

What dermatological treatments does Ibn Al Nafees offer?

Ibn Al Nafees offers many skincare procedures including Hydrafacial where skin is cleansed using special multivitamins solutions along with an anti aging serum. We also have the latest laser hair removal machine where patients can get rid of unwanted hair with minimal pain and best results. In addition, we have a new peeling procedure with Nano technology for patients having melasma & uneven skin tones.

Any new and interesting developments in dermatology?

Every year there is something new with aesthetic dermatology. Recently Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy has made a new revolution in treating hair loss, hair thinning, dark eye circles, wrinkles as well as brightening and rejuvenation of the face.

opinion

THE E G A U L ANG GULF

Aiste A Daubaras talks about bridging the gap.

I

t might be one of the most over-used clichés known to the humankind, but indeed 'time flies'. To my somewhat bewildered realisation, it has been already more than a year, since we found ourselves in this sunny, sandy and exotic part of the world. And as any beginning, it was a rather challenging, slightly shocking... and a bit lonely to start with... So what does a girl do on her birthday when all her best friends are miles away and new ones are just in the making? Undoubtedly, she seeks her other 'best friends' aka 'diamonds'. However, making the right choice on such an important matter, in an unfamiliar place, requires an extensive and timeconsuming reconnaissance. Luckily, if the girl's friends back home are as supportive and as well connected as mine, the task is much easier. Just with one phone call you are immediately supplied with reliable recommendations. And thus, Hubby was duly summoned to an expedition to a certain highly recommended Aladdin's cave (which looked like a rather ordinary jewellery boutique from outside... chmm...). As all the goodies on display were duly admired and coveted, and favourite ones chosen after much agonising decision making... one encountered a huge problem – the Language Gulf! Because as it turned out, the said Mr Aladdin spoke not a word

of English... nor French... nor any other language that we have a command of. Fair enough... it is his country, it is his cave. How very presumptions of us to expect that he should speak our language when we can hardly muster a word in his, between the both of us ... Anyway, it would have been too defeatist to give up at this stage, so off we trotted back home to regroup and rethink the strategy. Needless to say, the services of the same kind friend were called for again, to give me a crash course in Basic-DiamondPurchasing Arabic. Et voilà! A few days later, equipped with all the necessary glossary, neatly saved in my phone, along with some very professionally recorded mini-audio-clips sent via WhatsApp to help me pronounce difficult sounds... we reappeared at Mr Aladdin's cave, 'Salam Alaikum-ed' him and started our negotiations in almost fluent and flawless Arabic. Well, honestly, perhaps it sounded more like a broken and badly pronounced mumble, but nevertheless, we were aptly rewarded for our efforts with a nice tanziilaat ('discount' in English but has a much deeper meaning here), extra gifts and most unusually, even a hint of a smile on that stern gentleman's face. So, dear Reader, I trust you may have realised by now, that my story is not about material goods, but about universally accepted and appreciated currency of 'A

Knowledge of The Local Language", as it is first and foremost considered to be a sign of respect for the locals, but also equally important, a rather handy tool to get by and to be understood. We all know that out of the 1.3 million people living on this charming island, more than half of the population are expats. Although how many of them speak at least some passable Arabic... I wonder... Disclaimer: The author of this article admits that, to her shame, she falls to the category of non-Arabic speaking expats, but is putting an assiduous effort to amend this error.

tech review

HUAWEI MATE 8 LAUNCH Cooler, Faster, Longer – but is it better? Huawei revealed their latest Flagship device, the Mate 8, to the Middle East region, at the Madinat Jumeirah Dubai.

T

he Huawei Mate 8 is a dual-SIM handset which features a 6-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) LCD display. The 3 models offer either 3/4GB of RAM and 32/64/128GB of internal storage. The device is powered by the Kirin 950 64-bit octa-core processor and a 4,000mAh battery. The latter provides over 2 days of standard usage, which is exceptional when compared to its competitors. The Mate 8 “phablet” provides a 16-megapixel main camera with an 8-megapixel ‘selfie-snapper’ up front. Android 6.0 Marshmallow runs Huawei’s Emotion UI 4.0 on top of it. This is a little dated now, but Huawei assure us that the next release will introduce a greatly revised feature set and will run on the Mate 8. This handset is available in Champagne Gold, Moonlight Silver, Space Gray, and Mocha Brown colour. Bahrain Confidential had the opportunity to interview Ashraf Fawakherji, Vice President for the Middle East Region, to understand a little more about the device. Ashraf pointed out that the lower screen resolution was

60 Bahrain Confidential March 2016

chosen to increase the battery life and performance. He went on to say that they had gone to great lengths to ensure that the phone ran ‘cool’, by using some advanced thermodynamics, where handset temperature is often a criticism of many of its competitors. I particularly liked the exceptionally fast fingerprint reader on the rear of the phone, which is much more accessible in general use, though it might be a drawback when the device is lying on a table top. Added to this, the Mate 8 also has a great feature called “Knuckle Gestures”, where the phone can differentiate between finger and knuckle touches on the display. You can do some cool things by simply tapping the screen with your knuckles, providing shortcuts to many features to speed up the overall usability of the device. Overall, the new Mate 8 is a big step forward from its predecessor, though it

would have been great to have the top model with a higher resolution and perhaps without the Emotion UI, sticking to Marshmallow’s stock interface, which is better, in our opinion. Looking at what Huawei achieved with the Nexus 6P, which combined great design and awesome specs, I can't help but feel the Mate 8 could have been so much better. However, the ability to spend a day with the device without having to drag around a charger is certainly a great step forward in this marketplace; something had to suffer to achieve this. In summary, it's one of the best larger phones you can buy right now and if you're looking at a phablet, but don't want anything all that expensive then this is a great choice.

Available at stores in Bahrain

The Huawei Mate S & Watch

The Huawei Mate S’ touch screen control technology strikes a balance between the phone’s brilliant capabilities and its stunning visual appearance. Touch is a core of the Mate S, creating a new experience for users and enhancing their interaction with the device. For instance, when viewing photos, they can be quickly previewed and enlarged by pressing the screen with one finger. The phone is equipped with Fingerprint 2.0, which improves recognition speeds by 100 percent, as well as its onehand operations. In addition to this, the Knuckle Control 2.0 feature simplifies how users switch between app operations and take screenshots. For instance, drawing a “C” with ones knuckle activates a camera, while doubleclicking the screen with a knuckle records the screen in the form of a video. The phone is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 800-megapixel front camera with soft, front lights to improve selfies!

THE 2016 LINCOLN MKX

A

lmoayyed Motors, the Lincoln importer-dealer in Bahrain, announced the arrival of the new Lincoln MKX to its showroom. The luxury cross over is designed to give you a warm, tailored driving experience.

New engine option

Active noise control enhances overall sound quality by cancelling unwanted noises, resulting in a comfortable cabin and a better environment for music listening and in-car telephone conversation. Additionally, the available hands-free power liftgate ensures height can be adjusted easily.

Leading the engine choices is the new 2.7-litre twin-turbocharged Ti-VCT EcoBoost V6, which is GSO-rated at 346hp and 542 Nm of torque. The standard 3.7-litre V6 is also GSO-rated and offers 308hp and 379 Nm of torque.

Other features: • Adaptive cruise control • Lane-Keeping System • Blind Spot Information System • Cross-traffic alert

Safer & More Effortless Ride

The MKX is the first in its class to have a 360-degree camera with an enhanced (12-sensor ultrasonic system) park assist. The camera system also offers a 180-degree split view, great for crosstraffic situations. The 360-degree view shows up to seven feet all around the vehicle, helping to make parking easier.

Available semi-autonomous features include the first Lincoln implementation of technology that may help avoid or lessen the severity of some frontal crashes: PreCollision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. If no corrective action is taken and the system detects a collision is imminent, the brakes are automatically applied. Available adaptive steering ensures optimal steering response in all situations. The new Auto Hold feature automatically releases the brakes when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Available Lincoln Drive Control, a suite of ride-enhancing technologies, customises the driving experience and optimises performance. Drivers can select among normal, sport and comfort modes.

70 Bahrain Confidential March 2016

Enhanced Park Assist

Elegant Design

Proud, wide shoulders, dynamic side undercuts and belt lines, and clever touches such as the integrated antenna underscore a sophisticated and powerful appearance. The interior blends function with flowing forms and is both open and cocoon-like, stunning yet quiet. Rich materials and exquisite detailing add to the experience.

Warm & Tailored Experience

The patented Active Motion function is a slight continuous movement in the seat cushion – perfect for long trips or while waiting in traffic. Lincoln Experiences greets the driver within approximately nine feet. The lower LED daytime running lights gently brighten, door handles are illuminated and there is interior sequential lighting. The available panoramic VistaRoof enhances open air driving experience.

Revel Audio

Revel’s Audio makes an automotive debut with the MKX. A 13-speaker Revel system features: • Revel signature waveguides on every door • QuantumLogic Surround Sound • A 12-channel Class-D amplifier • Field-balancing shorting rings • Proprietary spectral and power management technologies • The Revel Ultima system is an optional extra available on Reserve models and features 19 speakers and a 20-channel high-voltage hybrid amplifier

THE 2016 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT

Nick Cooksey reviews Volkswagen's latest Passat incantation.

T

he 2016 Passat is available in Bahrain in four configurations - S, SE, SEL and Sport. It seems everything on this car has been changed from the previous model. The exterior design is attractive in a conservative sort of way. In fact, the styling and changes to this car can best be described as ‘evolutionary’. Volkswagen and German car brands in general rarely go for the type of major facelifts that their Japanese and Korean competitors make when introducing new models. Inside, the cockpit is, unlike the subtle changes to the exterior, completely different. There is plenty of space and the center console and dashboard have two-tone decor panels and there are a lot of soft surfaces. There’s dual-zone climate

control, a multifunction steering wheel, and the leather seats look like they belong in a luxury car costing several times the price. The infotainment system is bang up to date and allows iPhone and Android pairing and uses a capacitive touchscreen that allows swiping and pinching motions as used on the phones themselves. This car has a 6.0-inch screen. The 2016 Passat is powered by a 2.5-liter MPI engine which accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 9 seconds and offers 170hp. Driving around Manama the Passat performed as capably as you’d expect. Steering is tight, there was little engine noise, but overall it was a comfortable drive with forgiving suspension when driving along the bumpy dirt roads near
