First of all... Read stories of highly successful individuals and it’s easy to think they have some special… intangible… something - ideas, talent, drive, skills, creativity, whatever - that you don’t have.

Wrong. Success is inevitable only in hindsight. It’s easy to look back on a person’s path to greatness and assume that every vision was clear, every plan was perfect, every step was executed flawlessly, and tremendous success was a foregone conclusion. It wasn’t. Success is never assured. Only in hindsight does it appear that way. If you’re willing to decide who you are and what you want to be, to work hard and persevere, who you are is more than enough. Don’t measure yourself against other people. Pick a goal and measure yourself against that goal - that is the only comparison that matters.

Tower Power - What the well-designed smart city will look like
Face Lift
Love the new look of Bahrain Confidential. Great articles and layouts! I particularly liked ‘Bahrain Beats’, the feature about the live music scene on the island. My husband and I love partying and lounging, and so it was really useful having an inclusive list of events. Keep up the good work! Tana Dear Tana, Thanks for the compliment! We loved working on the October issue (we love working on all our issues!) and it was a lot of fun with ideas and creativity flying around. We hope you enjoy the November edition as much.
Better Late Than Never
You guys published two movie reviews last month. Errr they’re already out and
most people have watched them. So, what’s your point? May be you can do some research the next time you publish something? Movie Buff Dear Movie Buff – please don’t huff and puff! We are well-aware that the movies we featured, released a while ago. We simply gave our take on these films and recommended our readers to watch them if they haven’t already. We’re sure you have – do you agree with our reviews?
Tower Power
Dear Bahrain, today and always! We couldn’t agree more. Development is good but not at the cost of losing the essence of who we truly are. That said, we have full faith that the Bahrain will make a balanced decision.
Great article on ‘The Changing Face of Muharraq’. True that the Bahrain we know today is nothing like that of the yesteryears. Thanks to reclamation and real estate projects, the landscape has radically changed over the decade

or so. With the number of towers and buildings shooting up, it won’t be too long before we see glimpses of Dubai in Bahrain (or are we already!). But I sincerely hope, the Kingdom doesn’t lose its untouched-by-commercialisation side, there is something warm and cozy about the island that is missing from most GCC countries. Bahrain, today and always!

MEET THE BIG BOYS
More often than not, Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have it tougher than corporates in the business world. SME’s may find it hard to survive and are often not given enough opportunities to succeed. Keeping this in mind, the SME Committee have charted an event, under the patronage of Khalid Almoayed, Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), with the support of the Committee, chaired by Mohammed Farouk Almoayyed to stimulate growth in the private sector, showcase potential and create business opportunities for small entrepreneurs.

Chubalob’s
David Hollywood shares a nursery rhyme he wrote for his daughter Rebekah, relating to the baby fat we witness as protecting our children at an early age as they become toddlers. In the case of Chubalob’s, these are the soft arms and knee areas which simply squish along as they toddle’. Oh tell me what’s a chubalob, And if it round and fat, And if I take it for a walk, Will it remain unflat?
I’d love to play some games today, Like trains, and bears and summer, And patting pad’s along the way, While making tons of blubber.
And when I try to talk to one, Shall it stay as a tub, Ignoring everything I ask, Because it’s ears are blub?
And cause its arms has pudge on em, I’ll flap the flab alongem!

Bahrain's First Ironman
The island will host Ironman 70.3, the first ever in the Middle East.
O
rganising an Ironman event is something like a Promethean feat, but Dr Saqer Bin Salman Al Khalifa takes it all in stride. “We fell in love with the sport and have always wanted to organise one,” he says. Dr Saqer, who is the president of Bahrain Triathlon Association and former organiser of Challenge Bahrain, steps up to the ultimate challenge: hosting the first ever Ironman in the Middle East, with 40 qualifying slots up for grabs in the 2016 world championships for Ironman 70.3 in Australia. After raising the bar with a successful Challenge Bahrain, Dr Saqer and his team hope to repeat history with Ironman this year. "Bahrain is new to the international triathlon scene and events like this can step up the game for us," says Dr Saqer who believes that Bahrain is fast becoming the sporting destination of the Middle East and sports tourism can really boost the economy. He hopes to make Ironman Bahrain collectively profitable for the community. Set to take place on 5th December, the event already has over 600 athletes who have registered. 24 Bahrain Confidential November 2015
Bahrain is fast becoming the sporting destination of the Middle East and sports tourism can really boost the economy. The Triathlon's Course
This unique point-to-point triathlon will pass by Bahrain’s most astounding historical and contemporary attractions: starting at Prince Khalifa garden, participants will begin with swimming in the sea, north of the bridge that connects the mainland to the island of Muharraq. Afterwards, participants will cycle through the city, passing by vital landmarks like the AlFateh Grand Mosque, Gudaibiya Historic Palace,
Bahrain Museum, Bahrain Bay, Four Seasons Landmark Hotel, Bahrain World Trade Center, Bahrain Financial Harbor, Dilmun Burial Mounds, National Charter Monument, The Oil Museum (first oil well in the region), to end in the Bahrain International Circuit, for the last five kilometres of the 90km bike ride. There will be a shared route for the bike split ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. Moving out of the bike split, the loop run course will go through Al Areen Wildlife Park, going full circle and ending back in the Bahrain International Circuit. More than just a sports event, Ironman 70.3 Bahrain promises to be a fun-filled weekend with interesting activities for families too. Sports enthusiasts will also stand the chance to meet their favourite athelets during the opening and closing ceremonies.

H.O.G. Bahrain Rally 2015
Shaikh Abdulla shares a prized moment & Below: A still from the H.O.G. Bahrain Rally 2014.
Bahrain Confidential
speaks to Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Director of H.O.G. Bahrain Chapter Committee.
What do you love about your role as the Director?
Being a H.O.G. Director, I see the world in a different way because I get the chance to meet people across the globe. These experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Any challenges you face?
The challenge is to maintain H.O.G. Bahrain’s standards despite being a nonprofit organisation. We organise events throughout the year and have to maintain our budgets. We strive to make the Bahrain Chapter the best in the region; last year, it was awarded the best chapter in the MENA region by Harley-Davidson. That’s an achievement and I thank God I was part of it.
Your best bike riding experience?
I’ve had a lot of riding experiences but, in the end, it’s all about the people who are with you during the ride. It’s great to stop for a break in the middle of nowhere and have a coffee brewed by a fellow rider – this guy actually carries the coffee pot with him on his bike! 26 Bahrain Confidential November 2015
A H.O.G. memory you cherish?
In June this year, we had a stand to promote the event at H.O.G. European Rally in Porto Sherry, Spain. I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Davidson, Vice President of Core Customer Marketing and great-grandson of the company’s
co-founder, William A Davidson, and now Vice President of the HarleyDavidson Museum and Factory Tours.
Your message to riding enthusiasts in the Kingdom?
I would like to thank them for their help and effort toward making this event a success.
Your expectations from H.O.G. Rally 2015?
This event has great potential in Bahrain and I believe, can be one of the biggest motorcycle events in the region. With the support I’m getting from the tourism sector and other parties involved, we can be the home of this event. We already have the dates for the next three years booked in advance.

28 Bahrain Confidential November 2015
My experience at IM Kona this year:
My biggest take away from the race was ‘you have to finish your own race’. The island can throw surprises right from extreme heat to winds and currents but you need to be prepared and adapt.
What I love about racing in Bahrain:
I had a great time in Bahrain in 2014. It's a welcoming place and everything was simply clean and beautiful.
My favourite Arab food:
…is anything with Grouper, the best fish of the Arabian Gulf.
An advice I follow even today:
Control the controllables right from nutrition to your pace and mindset. And have the ability to adapt. Enjoy the process and always have the 'why' you're racing in your mind. Keep it simple. This is one awesome sport to do, so, have fun doing it!

Mosaic Art One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, they say, and right so! Coloured glass shards, stones and pebbles, shells and beads are considered throwaway by many but are the building blocks of mosaic art. Bahrain Confidential showcases Faiza Saeed, Bahrain’s first mosaic artist, and her creations.
W
hen Faiza was younger, she was constantly experimenting with various art forms until she discovered mosaic art during a museums-visit in Britain, Italy and Spain. Her love for it deepened when she met and learned from legendary British artist, Emma Biggs in London. Finding her passion helped her realise that one doesn’t have to be an excellent painter or illustrator to be an artist. Faiza’s mission is to spread the art of mosaics in Bahrain. She hopes to beautify the island by adding pops of colour everywhere. Moreover, mosaics are a very durable art form and can withstand extreme climates. Faiza has sold her creations in markets and exhibitions, and she even conducts classes for beginners and intermediates.

MIXTAPE THE SCHOOL OF ROCK
Music education on the island is very limited, says Mohammed Al Ghayeb, a Bahraini passionate about art. The 21-year old tells Melissa Nazareth about how he successfully realised his university project of teaching music to high school students for free. I’ve spoken to a few accomplished music artists in the Kingdom who believe that Bahrain (and to an extent, the region) hardly has a music scene, let alone an industry. They also think that a lack of education facilities in the field hinders students from considering music as a full-time career. When Mohammed Al Ghayeb approached me with his story, I knew it was one to tell; not only because it is inspiring but also because there is a need to spread the word about creating music education opportunities in the Kingdom. And that is not the responsibility a few, but the community – you and me – as a whole. I come from a family of artists, my uncles are carpenters and own a carpentry shop; my dad grew up in the shop and eventually got a scholarship to study sculpting in Egypt. A Bahraini with a bachelor’s degree in sculpting

feature is not very common and so, he had to start off with freelancing. He moved on to become a teacher and took projects abroad including China, the UK and Greece. The reason I mention this is to highlight that I grew up in a home where art is considered sacred and respected not just as a hobby but also a profession.
The Project
At first, I tried my hand at painting and even participated in many competitions during high school but felt something was missing. So, then I started listening to music and realised how expressive it is; I’d listen to an instrumental piece which doesn’t even have vocals but be awed by it. At one point, I thought, why not study music in school only to realise
I work on Mixtape with two other partners, one of who is my friend and talented guitarist, and the other, his friend who knows music too. We conduct classes twice a week for 45 to 50 minutes. Currently, we have eight students who are of the same age as us, making the atmosphere in class informal and friendly; sometimes they even ask me drop them home and I do. We keep in touch even though the session is completed for this year – we run Mixtape just once a year to suit my scheduled.
that it was more of a break class in between science or math. I wanted to do something about this - while I was pursuing a course in Entrepreneurship from Georgetown University, we were asked to come up with an idea for a live project. I decided to go with music education as my theme and that’s how Mixtape was born. Though, the project wasn’t too well received at the university, I believed in it. I met up with many schools and discussed the idea. Most of them liked it but weren’t sure how executable it was. I finally got in touch with a popular consultancy catering to international schools in Bahrain and the region. They loved Mixtape and asked me to present a curriculum – what I intended to teach students. That was very challenging
There is a waiting list of students who want to learn from us – unfortunately our classes are tailored to accommodate just eight per session. But we’re always open to having an audience; few students come by once in a while and tell us they want to practice - we just ask them to pick up a guitar and strum on. We teach our students how to play piano, keyboard, electric drums, classical guitars and electric guitars. Although Al Hekma International School has an electric drum set and piano, we need more. My partners and I use our own instruments or those of our friends. In addition, the music biggies in the Kingdom are very supportive of the project and never turn us down when we approach them to lend us

On Bahrain’s Music Scene
There is a need to create music education awareness in the Kingdom. We have really talented local artists playing all sorts of music. We also have a great audience who enjoy music – fine examples are the F1 concerts, and other large-scale music events like the one where Afrojack played; I’ve been to these, and the turn-out and support from the people is great! What we do need though is open-mindedness, especially from record label owners who generally promote only certain genres. Investing in new talents is definitely risky but then you have bands like "Mashrou Leila" which proved that Arabic can gel very well with modern instruments. People actually love their music, so what are we waiting for!
equipment – I suppose they’ve been where we are today and understand us. I want to mention here that my batchmates and I were invited to a conference at Georgetown University. I was pleased to discover that my idea – Mixtape – was the only one (out of 120 others) to be successfully realised just seven months after I conceived it.
Quick Five with Al Ghayeb • Favourite Genre: Rock & Heavy Metal • Favourite Instruments: Electric Guitar because I find it more entertaining and edgy. But I started with the classical guitar and then moved on to the bass guitar.
Looking Ahead
So far it’s just Al Hekma International School but my music teacher has offered to recommend me to few other private schools. Eventually, I hope to get public schools onboard because these kids are the ones who will most benefit from the project – other kids can afford classes offering much better lessons (says a very modest Mohammed!). Having successfully implemented Mixtape, today I’m in a much better position to approach the Ministry of Education when we decide to expand. The feedback from our students will add credibility too. Our feedback forms primarily revolve around whether students will come back to us a second time. Most of them have 36 Bahrain Confidential November 2015

SO WHAT DO YOU THIN There’s THE BEST, and there’s THE REST!
Some restaurants are better than others, and some are REALLY SPECIAL maybe for their presentation of cuisine… or atmosphere… or value… or service… or entertainment… or combinations of all of these… or for other reasons! Unlike competitive sports which have clear winners (and losers), restaurants cater to all sorts of niches and tastes. What appeals to some will not appeal to others. So we believe it’s misleading to proclaim any restaurant to be “the First”, or an ultimate “Winner” over all others. The reality is there’s THE BEST, and there’s THE REST!

Luxury & Leadership
Bahrain Confidential talks to Kevin Ryan, Retail Director of Damas Jewellery. How would you describe your leadership style?
My leadership style is focused on two key characteristics: commitment and adaptability. These two traits are instrumental in achieving a well-aligned organizational culture that can easily adapt to market trends. Because Damas is a multi-enterprise business with such a strong and recognizable name, adaptability is a key factor in maintaining the brand and due to this we have to ensure that we have exemplary product quality, unparalleled designs and unmatched craftsmanship, and investing significantly in our employees in terms of training and development and being heavily involved in daily business operations.
A lesson you’ve learned in the course of your career and still follow?
Always listen to your customers. Businesses change constantly, especially in our industry. The fashion market is never consistent; what was fashionable last year isn’t this year. Since we offer jewellery, which is a fashion statement we have to ensure we are aligned with our client’s tastes and understand what they need from us. Damas believes that quality comes from innovation, therefore creativity is at the heart of the brand. At Damas innovation is a watchword, allowing the brand to continuously enhance its range and services to realize its true potential and provide beautiful jewellery that makes us stand out from our competitors.

How is Bahrain’s market different from others Damas operates in? Our Bahraini clientele have an eye for detail and know exactly what they want. As an artist, you’re always improving what you last did. So, though each collection has been successful, for me it would be the latest, Fall-Winter ’15.
It was an experiment to be honest. My background in architecture gives me an eye for detail and proportion. I had worked for a shoe factory and owned a store in Manhattan. At one point I thought, I have sufficient expertise in shoes, and took the plunge. Things picked up from there and I stuck to it.
Your hopes for the future? I want to keep doing what I’m doing. I’m currently training people to takeover managerial responsibilities of the brand so I can focus on other things like adding a t-shirt line to my portfolio, perhaps or my girl friend’s been talking about a lingerie line. I have so much energy to do a lot more!
What got you to blend Arabic calligraphy with your designs? I’m passionate about calligraphy; I almost did my thesis on Arabic calligraphy in Brooklyn and have applied the art to architecture as well. For me it is about the geometry of intersecting letters and the negative spaces between them, which make the shoe sensual and feminine – how much of the shoe is open and closed, and what you see behind the letters once the shoe is worn.
List three traits of the woman who truly represents your brand? The way I look at it, there are followers and leaders – the followers are not what Aennis Eunis stands for. My brand is about the

A celebrity who represents your designs? Someone like Shakira, perhaps, because I’m always looking for someone who brings two worlds together.
Aennis Eunis’ was launched back in 2010. The brand has come out with 10 collections over the past five years. Shoes from these collections are available at Saks Fifth Avenue, City Centre Bahrain.

beauty As part of City Centre Bahrain’s successful Fall for Fashion campaign, Joelle Mardinian, Founder of luxury make-up brand, Maison de Joelle recently visited Bahrain. Bahrain Confidential spoke to her about the brand's exotic makeovers in an EXCLUSIVE. After pursuing her degree in the UK, ace make-up artist and creative entrepreneur, Joelle Mardinian realised her brainchild, an exclusive beauty house offering unique beauty experiences. Today, Maison de Joelle is arguably the leading luxury salon in the Middle East and features on a weekly reality TV show with Joelle, featuring radical makeovers. Maison de Joelle opened its first store on Jumeirah Beach road, UAE. The brand then moved on to expand in the region, opening stores in Riyadh, Jeddah, Qatar, and Morocco. When we ask Joelle if she has any surprises for the future, she says there are plans to set up new stores in Iraq and Jordan.

The Makeovers
Maison de Joelle
Talking of her business background, Joelle says it has helped her expand. “We’re not only focusing on the Middle East – Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco – but also on Europe, America, and Australia as there are lots of Arabs living in these countries.” She confirms that Maison de Joelle going international is not far from reality and is definitely something she is looking at in the near future. So, what sets Joelle’s brand apart from others in the industry? “We never hide our beauty secrets right from hair coloring and facial to nails and makeup – it’s all shown on TV. We are also one of the brands offering everything under one roof.” Joelle
goes on to talk about the beauty house’s line-up of experts. “We have a team of talented, motivated, and ambitious make-up artists who are in love with beauty and strive to bring out the best in every woman.” Though Maison de Joelle is dedicated to giving women the best makeovers, Joelle believes that the glamorous woman looks after herself from within. “A sophisticated, beautiful woman looks after her nutrition, exercises, and has healthy hair and skin; she likes to look picture perfect but without overdoing it and is a woman with
We ask Joelle what she considers during a client transformation and she says, “I rely on personality rather than age.” For instance, Joelle believes that an older woman could be young at heart and adventurous; so, giving her a funky look would be the best fit! When in Rome, dress like the Romans do, says Aiste A Daubaras.
When six months ago my Hubby lured me to join him on his Arabic adventure, I honestly didn't know what to expect. And more alarmingly what to pack and What To Wear?! So as any self respecting and very decisive woman of fashion, I selectively packed one thousand and one dresses (paid an exuberant access luggage fee) and hoped for the best. However as it is always the case, nothing proved entirely suitable both, style and weather wise. Especially as the first leg of our trip was in Saudi Arabia during cold spells and sand storms. Oh how grateful I was for abaya, such clever and practical invention, albeit with its own limitations. But as winds of change blew us to the liberal Bahrain, those trustful friends were pushed to the back of my wardrobe. 'So you can walk alone one a street... without wearing an abaya?' - my father asked. Breaking yet another mythical stereotype about this lovely small island, I patiently explained that you can very well wear a bikini and no one would blink an eye (not strictly true but let’s not dwell on these boring technicalities). And so inevitably, my wardrobe as well as my looks, gradually underwent a gentle makeover. A bit like a postsand storm dust that coats everything, those months spent in Bahrain left a gentle imprint on my 'toilette', as surrounded by sand, sea and hazy sunshine both, colours and fragrances and even emotions are slightly bolder and

and chunkier jewellery were called for, replacing a black and white look of those glum northern cities. But of cause, it slipped ones mind, that travelling back to the good old Europe is advisable to switch back... not only your watch, but your look as well. Imagine my embarrassment when at one of Paris Fashion week events, my friend and owner of International Etiquette School (who usually is a grate fan of my style) cleared her throat somewhat reluctantly, and pointed out that perhaps the whole ensemble of fancy coat, gold-chain handbag, dangling earrings and golden watch... is somewhat 'en peu trop'. And in that harsh white lighting of the trendy Parisian boutique, she was absolutely right. So the moral of this story is, that when in Rome do (or dress) like Romans do, or in my case, when in Bahrain, do the same, inshalla. But remember to adjust accordingly when travelling back.

Kelly Armatage advises 3 steps to improve work-place experiences. Do you find yourself stressed over a Boss or Co-Worker's actions? Has your workplace become a place of internal and external conflict for you? Do you over-give, with little appreciation in return? Our self-beliefs create our experiences, and our behaviours attract others to treat us in either respectful or disrespectful ways. What is great news is that your experience CAN be changed. Here are my 3 Steps To Change - Ego, Bullying & Conflict at work: STEP ONE - Recognise AND forgive the fact that you are running on one or more of the following behaviours: Over giving (to feel indispensable or gain approval), allowing mistreatment or criticism (due to fear of job loss), believing others are more important / respected / intelligent than you (due to a lack of self worth), engaging in conflict in passive or aggressive ways (due to fear of confrontation).
STEP TWO - Decide to wire-in the opposite - healthy and functional behaviours: Saying NO to overdemanding Bosses/Co-Workers assertively. Being in harmony with your job description and self worth. Allowing encouragement and support from others and lastly, being comfortable with confrontation. STEP THREE - Practicing the above behaviours until they become the NORM. As you do this, work becomes a place whereby you feel POWERFUL, no matter who is in command. No matter how many dickheads you are working with. No matter how toxic, competitive and egotistical the environment. Your experience at work is reflected back to you, based on your work habits. Be willing to do-away with negative, dysfunctional and toxic habits that do not serve you any longer so that
you can then COMMAND the respect, appreciation and good treatment that you deserve.

Expat on the Move Maria Sorger advises connecting, not just networking. I must admit it is quite daunting being the newcomer in town, mustering the courage to go all alone to those networking events to connect with other women. You enter the venue and feel like you’re the only one in the room (and in the entire country) who is alone – a fact that’s absolutely not true but nothing can convince you otherwise. Everyone seems to be talking with at least one other person, except you. You slowly edge your way towards the back of the room and stand there helpless thinking this was such a bad idea… familiar scenario? Every expat woman has gone through this and will go through it again and again. It is intimidating, especially when you are young, but it does get better with age. Despite the initial ‘fear’, you know deep inside that you need to connect with other women who are in the same situation as you are. These women will be your support; they will inspire you and encourage you. Most of us may not have extended family members or old friends who can assist us to settle in and adapt to our new home, and it is only through connecting with these other women that we will start to fully enjoy our lives as expats. It does not matter where you are on the ‘expat grid’ - a business professional, a homemaker, a writer or freelancer – we all face the same challenges. So, a word of advice from someone who has lived in 10

Indonesia: A Golfer’s Paradise! Bahrain Confidential travels to this beautiful country to explore it as a golfing destination.
I
t might come as a surprise to many that the Republic of Indonesia is not just a great holiday destination renowned for its beautiful landscape, beaches, heritage and culture but also for its picturesque golf courses. The Indonesian embassy in Bahrain organised a trip to the country that opened our eyes and made us look at Indonesia in a completely different light. With almost 150 golfing sites on a string of 17,000 islands, this archipelago
80 Bahrain Confidential November 2015
offers an experience as tropically diverse as the country itself. We started the tour in the capital city of Jakarta that boasts more than 35 golf courses, located less than an hour from the city centre.
Royale Jakarta Golf Club A golf oasis in the East of Jakarta, the Royale Jakarta Golf Club is one of the five great new golf courses in Asia, with an International Championship style concept,
designed by Bob Moore Jr. & JMP Group. This expansive course, with lush greens, fairways and panoramic views of Mount Salak and Mount Gede, has 27 holes - three sets of beautiful nine holes, with various levels of difficulty. Royale Jakarta Golf Club is the first club in Asia to use the latest grass type of Sea Isle Supreme Paspalum to help generate a consistent speed. This award-winning golf course, with its calming lake waters and exotic plants, is not only visually beautiful but also challenging for all
travel stunning Balangan beach and only a short 20-minute drive from the International Ngurah Rai Airport. Designed by Golfplan’s Ronald Fream, David Dale and Kevin Ramsey, this par 72, 18hole championship golf course stretches to 85
types of golfers and easily accessible due to its strategic location.
Damai Indah Golf – Pantai Indah Kapuk Capturing the ‘Spirit of The Sea’, Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) is one of the two international championship courses of Damai Indah Golf. Located along the Java Sea coastline in North Jakarta, PIK is designed by one of the best golf course designers, Robert Trent Jones Jr., who has skillfully incorporated the natural beauty of the Java Sea in the shape of lakes and waterways that virtually surround every hole. This unique 72-par, 6,048 metre golf course features relaxing pools and gently winding streams as strategically positioned water hazards and bunkers, and rustic fieldstone walls made of indigenous stone. PIK offers both, a challenge as well as an enjoyable play for recreational golfers of all skill levels. With so many world-class golf courses dotted around the archipelago, you are spoilt for choice. Next up on our agenda was to tee it up in one of the most exquisite destinations in the world, let alone the country – the tropical island of Bali, home to some excellent 9and 18-hole layouts and a popular destination for foreign golfers.
New Kuta Golf Located on the southwestern rim of the island’s Bukit Peninsula, New Kuta Golf is perched above a limestone cliff, overlooking the
hectares and boasts the first links style design in Indonesia. Carved out of harsh limestone and a
landscape of natural desert-like vegetation, it ranks among Asia’s best and most challenging. More than just a golf course, it has a marvelous clubhouse with one of the best venues, offering a panoramic view of the lush fairways and the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean.
Handara Golf & Resort Bali Indonesia’s geology subjects its islands to the greatest volcanic activity on earth. Using this to its advantage, Handara Golf
& Resort Bali is nestled inside the crater of a dormant volcano! Located in the central highlands of Bali, at almost 4,000 feet above sea level, this 18-hole championship golf course, designed by five times British Open Champion Peter Thomson, is the highest golf club in Bali. The picturesque landscape of surrounding green mountains, crater lakes, an equatorial rainforest and cool temperatures (14-24C) all year round attracts golfers from all corners of the world. It comes as no surprise that GOLF Magazine ranked it among the “Top 50 Greatest Golf Courses in the World”.
Nirwana Bali Golf Club We finished off the tour with a jewel of the Indian Ocean, Nirwana Bali Golf Club at Pan Pacific. This awardwinning championship golf course is beautifully set along the dramatic coastline, amidst perfectly pruned gardens and traditional Balinese rice paddies. Designed by legendary golfer, Greg Norman, this diverse course offers golfers an unparalleled golfing experience. Its signature seventh hole, overlooking the famous Tanah Lot temple is the most photographed hole on the course. This is truly one of the best venues to enjoy the stunning Bali sunset, which is made even more magical with its astounding backdrop. Our trip was a rich tapestry of events, filled with everything from funny anecdotes (golf buggies landing up in bunkers), to bits of culture (visit to the Uluwatu temple to witness the Kecak Fire and Trance Dance, Sukawati Art Market), shopping, dining (from dinners on the beach to tasting Kopi Luwak, the most expensive coffee in the world) and leisure (Kuta beach). All in all, we were thoroughly impressed and have a new-found respect for Indonesia – an absolute haven for the avid golfer!
Peak Season End of Ramadan, mid-June to mid-July, Christmas and New Years.

The concept of the Targa, which made its debut in 1965, delivers a safe driving enjoyment with an all-wheel drive and a wide rollover protection bar instead of B-pillars. WHAT IS ‘FINE DINING’?
A fine dining restaurant has a more formal atmosphere than a casual dining restaurant, and they tend to be more expensive. The staff may wear formal attire. They also have stricter dress codes. Fine dining restaurants are not usually places for kids, unless very well behaved.

THE ONLY PRODUCTIVITY TIP
YOU’LL EVER NEED By James Clear
E
rnest Hemingway woke each morning and began writing straight away. He described his daily routine by saying, “When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write.” Hemingway’s routine hints at the most productive strategy known for getting things done: Do the most important thing first each day. Sounds simple. No one does it. Just like Hemingway, who produced a remarkable volume of high-caliber work during his career, you can make surprising progress each day if you simply do the most important thing first.
WHY IT WORKS? We often assume that
productivity means getting more things done each day. Wrong. Productivity is getting important things done consistently. And no matter what you are working on, there are only a few things that are truly important. That’s why this strategy is effective. If you do the most important thing first each day, then you’ll always get something important done. First, willpower tends to be higher earlier in the day. That means you’ll be 114 Bahrain Confidential November 2015
Hemingway’s routine hints at the most productive strategy known for getting things done: Do the most important thing first each day. Sounds simple. No one does it. able to provide your best energy and effort to your most important task. Second, the deeper you get into the day, the more likely it is that unexpected tasks will creep into your schedule and the less likely it is that you’ll spend your time as planned. Doing the most important thing first each day helps avoid that. Finally, the human mind seems to dislike unfinished projects. You are more likely to finish a task after starting it, so start the important tasks as soon as possible.
WHY WE DON’T DO IT?
Most people spend most of their time responding to someone else’s agenda than their own. The tasks assigned to us by others might seem urgent, but what is urgent is seldom important. The important tasks in our lives are the ones that move our hopes, our dreams, our creations, and our businesses forward. Does that mean that we should ignore our responsibilities as parents or employees or citizens? Of course not. But we all need a time and space in our days to respond to our own agenda, not someone else’s.
NOT A MORNING PERSON?
The phrase “Do the most important thing first each day” is just a simple way of saying, “Give yourself a time and space to work on what is important to you each day”. There are just as many night owls producing fabulous work as there are early birds. But no matter what their particular routine looked like, every productive artist embraced the idea of protecting a sacred time each day when they could work on their own agenda.
